Latest / HEAVY Music Interviews / The Subtle Art Of Simplicity With DANKO JONES
Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: My name's Daniel Jones. I'm the singer and guitarist in
- 0:03Speaker 1: DANKL Jones.
- 0:05Speaker 2: Fantastic mate, thanks for joining us this evening.
- 0:09Speaker 1: Sure, no problem.
- 0:11Speaker 2: So Danko Jones are releasing your twelve studio album, Leo Rising,
- 0:15Speaker 2: on November twenty First, mate, what's this period like for you? Like,
- 0:19Speaker 2: do you sort of sit back and second guess what
- 0:21Speaker 2: you could have done or you might have done differently,
- 0:22Speaker 2: or do you put it to bed and move.
- 0:24Speaker 1: On in terms of like previous albums.
- 0:28Speaker 2: Yeah, well just generally, Yeah, like you've got a bit
- 0:31Speaker 2: of a wait from now until it comes out.
- 0:34Speaker 1: I mean, I mean, you know, we've been doing this
- 0:36Speaker 1: for twenty nine years. There's always gonna be some regrets.
- 0:40Speaker 1: I mean, I don't think it would be uh a
- 0:43Speaker 1: proper band if there weren't, But those regrets are outweighed by,
- 0:49Speaker 1: you know, all the records we've put out that you know,
- 0:51Speaker 1: I'm pretty proud of, including this new one. So yeah,
- 0:56Speaker 1: you know, I sure there's going to be regrets, but
- 1:00Speaker 1: I'd much rather focus on there's still a lot of
- 1:03Speaker 1: stuff we've done that I'm pretty proud of. So in fact,
- 1:07Speaker 1: most of it is so.
- 1:08Speaker 2: Yeah, well, I'm lucky enough to you've had to listen
- 1:11Speaker 2: to the album before this interview, and she's an absolutely
- 1:13Speaker 2: crack up mite. But what I like about you guys
- 1:16Speaker 2: is you don't try and reinvent the wheel when you
- 1:18Speaker 2: do an album, but you add enough lub to make
- 1:20Speaker 2: it turn faster. You know, you just sort of you
- 1:22Speaker 2: got your made potatoes and you just expand upon it
- 1:25Speaker 2: every time.
- 1:27Speaker 1: Oh well, thanks man, thank you.
- 1:31Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:31Speaker 1: I don't really think there's a need to, you know,
- 1:35Speaker 1: reinvent the wheel of rock in twenty twenty five. But
- 1:42Speaker 1: at the same time, you know, there's still room for
- 1:47Speaker 1: making it sound fresh. Uh So that's kind of our goal.
- 1:51Speaker 1: We're not trying to create a new genre of rock music,
- 1:55Speaker 1: but we're just trying to make it sound fresh. If
- 1:57Speaker 1: there's any sort of goal that you have.
- 2:01Speaker 2: Yeah, so dive into the album a bit more musically,
- 2:04Speaker 2: like He is essentially a rock album, that dive into
- 2:06Speaker 2: the musical dynamics of it a bit date before us
- 2:08Speaker 2: and tell us what you're going for.
- 2:12Speaker 1: Uh. I mean, it doesn't change album. Every album is
- 2:16Speaker 1: the same as is the next, and the next one
- 2:18Speaker 1: will be the same, which is just try to write
- 2:21Speaker 1: a whole bunch of tunes that that I like or
- 2:24Speaker 1: that we we like. I mean, I I write to
- 2:28Speaker 1: please myself first and foremost. If I don't like it,
- 2:31Speaker 1: I can't back it. That's not to say that there
- 2:35Speaker 1: were songs that are there are songs on our previous
- 2:38Speaker 1: albums that I don't really like. Sure, it's always going
- 2:42Speaker 1: to be like that. You're you're striving for perfection. But
- 2:47Speaker 1: at the moment of inception, when when when we were
- 2:52Speaker 1: you know, coming up with it and it was starting
- 2:56Speaker 1: to become a song, all the way into the studio
- 3:00Speaker 1: awarding it, we all backed it, you know, we all
- 3:05Speaker 1: thought they were great. We all thought that they would
- 3:08Speaker 1: be potential singles. And then once the record's done and
- 3:13Speaker 1: the dust settles, you kind of and you have some
- 3:16Speaker 1: space from it, you kind of reassess it or look
- 3:20Speaker 1: at it differently, and you know, things come more into focus,
- 3:25Speaker 1: or songs come more into focus. On this new album,
- 3:28Speaker 1: I thought track five I'm Going Blind, was going to
- 3:32Speaker 1: be the single. I never choose the singles, but I
- 3:35Speaker 1: thought that was a potential, very high potential to be
- 3:38Speaker 1: a single in it. It is not going to be,
- 3:42Speaker 1: so you just don't know, you know, what ends up
- 3:46Speaker 1: anchoring the record or pushing the four album forward. We've
- 3:50Speaker 1: all heard those records by bands where you know, maybe
- 3:53Speaker 1: the song the single drew you to the album or
- 3:56Speaker 1: the band, but then when you got the album you
- 3:58Speaker 1: listen to it, there's like two or three other tracks
- 4:01Speaker 1: that are way better than the song that drew you
- 4:04Speaker 1: to the band. So I mean that's you know, it's
- 4:08Speaker 1: it's all it's all subjective, but you just never know.
- 4:13Speaker 1: So the goal is always just to please yourself. So
- 4:18Speaker 1: I'm happy with the songs we wrote, whether there's singles
- 4:20Speaker 1: or not, or whether people get to hear it or not.
- 4:23Speaker 1: So that's that's first and foremost.
- 4:26Speaker 2: Now, speaking of singles, might like today you've released what
- 4:29Speaker 2: you need and every day it is a Saturday night,
- 4:30Speaker 2: So are they a good sonic representation of what you
- 4:33Speaker 2: expect that role?
- 4:34Speaker 1: Yeah? Yeah, I mean I stand behind those songs as
- 4:39Speaker 1: like good representatives for the rest of the record and
- 4:43Speaker 1: for us as a band. I mean, you know, we're
- 4:47Speaker 1: we've written songs that are in the similar sounding vein
- 4:49Speaker 1: in the past. You know, every day a Saturday night
- 4:52Speaker 1: is kind of like a stab at a rock anthem,
- 4:56Speaker 1: which is something I always try to do on every
- 4:59Speaker 1: albu and I only believe we got it on the
- 5:03Speaker 1: last record, previous Electric Sounds with the song good Time,
- 5:07Speaker 1: and so every Day is Saturday Night is kind of
- 5:10Speaker 1: like it's follow up. So for example, Kiss wrote I
- 5:19Speaker 1: want to rock and roll all night party every day,
- 5:21Speaker 1: and then they followed it up with Shouted Out Loud.
- 5:24Speaker 1: So every day is Saturday Night. It is kind of
- 5:26Speaker 1: like our shout it out Loud?
- 5:28Speaker 2: Nice now and what you need also open to the
- 5:31Speaker 2: album in the modern music cage where people rarely listen
- 5:35Speaker 2: to a full album start to finish, Like you still
- 5:37Speaker 2: put as much thought into the lead single or does
- 5:40Speaker 2: it sort of become irrelevant?
- 5:42Speaker 1: I don't. I just wrote, we just write songs just
- 5:46Speaker 1: the way, like I said, just to please us. If
- 5:49Speaker 1: the song is fast and energetic, that's a great song.
- 5:52Speaker 1: If the song is mid tempo and kind of like pulsating,
- 5:56Speaker 1: oh that's a great song too. For what you need
- 5:59Speaker 1: to be the first single or the lead off track
- 6:01Speaker 1: or whatever it is. At this point, I had no idea,
- 6:04Speaker 1: honest to be honest with you, as if I haven't been,
- 6:10Speaker 1: But what you need? I originally in my head was thinking, oh,
- 6:15Speaker 1: this is going to be like a probably like a
- 6:18Speaker 1: mid tempo, mid album, high energy track to kind of
- 6:23Speaker 1: like bring the listener back if you're listening to the
- 6:26Speaker 1: whole album, the journey would be like, oh, okay, there's
- 6:29Speaker 1: a couple of mid tempo songs, but what you need
- 6:31Speaker 1: would bring up the listener and bring up the energy
- 6:34Speaker 1: of the album. Again, we've done that in the past
- 6:37Speaker 1: with previous albums, So I thought it was going to
- 6:39Speaker 1: get slotted in that spot. But then jc ur bass
- 6:43Speaker 1: player he sequences the albums, he put it at the
- 6:46Speaker 1: first the top like he put it as a leadoff track,
- 6:49Speaker 1: and I was like really, And then I thought about it.
- 6:52Speaker 1: I'm like, well, there isn't any other song that could
- 6:54Speaker 1: really like calm out, you know, all Guns Blazing like
- 6:58Speaker 1: that song for the record, because a lot of it,
- 7:01Speaker 1: a lot of the songs were mid tempo, especially the
- 7:03Speaker 1: second half. So yeah, it made sense once I kind
- 7:06Speaker 1: of I thought about it. So yeah.
- 7:10Speaker 2: Then the press release CAOL was Leah Rising maybe the
- 7:12Speaker 2: most uplifting and inspirational Danko Giants album to date. Would
- 7:16Speaker 2: you agree with that?
- 7:21Speaker 1: I don't know. It's not as if I don't agree
- 7:23Speaker 1: with it, but I don't know. I, like I said,
- 7:27Speaker 1: I just write. You know, we get a deadline and
- 7:30Speaker 1: then I start writing, and then whatever comes out in
- 7:33Speaker 1: that window of time is what what we were left
- 7:39Speaker 1: with and what we can put out. So I don't
- 7:42Speaker 1: really know, but I mean the writing process for this
- 7:46Speaker 1: album was long, but when we did come up with
- 7:51Speaker 1: an idea, it was we kind of all knew, like,
- 7:54Speaker 1: oh yeah, yeah, that's going to be on the record.
- 7:56Speaker 1: So it wasn't as if we were like trying to
- 7:59Speaker 1: trying to like look under the look under the carpet
- 8:02Speaker 1: to find any ideas.
- 8:04Speaker 2: So you've got a Marty Friedman has pissed on the
- 8:06Speaker 2: track Domit in the rough lot. We don't know what
- 8:08Speaker 2: alleged he is, but what was the thought crisis behind
- 8:10Speaker 2: bringing him in for that particular song?
- 8:14Speaker 1: Yeah, So, I mean I was on Marty's album Inferno,
- 8:17Speaker 1: what was it twenty fourteen, So it's been over ten
- 8:20Speaker 1: years since I was on Marty's album, And since twenty fourteen,
- 8:24Speaker 1: we've put out what is it, four or five albums
- 8:28Speaker 1: and there's just not been an opportunity or a moment
- 8:33Speaker 1: or a song where we could hear him on it.
- 8:35Speaker 1: And that was definitely like we had tracked it, and
- 8:44Speaker 1: I mean, I could have done the solo on that
- 8:45Speaker 1: album like any other song of ours, but but really
- 8:50Speaker 1: that space in the song because it's it's very reminiscent
- 8:54Speaker 1: of Kiss, and I know Marty gets it, and it
- 8:57Speaker 1: would just be awesome if we could have like a
- 8:59Speaker 1: really really wicked guitar solo ala Marty Friedman. So let's
- 9:04Speaker 1: just ask the man himself. And plus, it was like, hey, pal,
- 9:11Speaker 1: I was on your album, but we want We didn't
- 9:17Speaker 1: want to just cash in just whenever we could, so
- 9:20Speaker 1: it had to be the right song. So it took
- 9:22Speaker 1: a couple of albums to do that. So I'm like,
- 9:25Speaker 1: we're all really happy. The funny thing is, though, we
- 9:28Speaker 1: played it for one of our guys in the crew
- 9:31Speaker 1: and he heard the album and he was like, I
- 9:34Speaker 1: don't know, track two, man, that's the best guitar solo
- 9:37Speaker 1: you've ever done, ever done. That is the best guitar
- 9:40Speaker 1: playing I've ever heard. I'm like, thanks, but it's not me,
- 9:44Speaker 1: It's it's like probably one of the greatest guitar players
- 9:47Speaker 1: ever played metal. Thanks for the Yeah, thanks thanks for
- 9:51Speaker 1: at least believing that I'm capable of doing that.
- 9:59Speaker 2: Song. The album called LEI rising to you, which to
- 10:01Speaker 2: me suggested it mud be something a bit dapa the
- 10:04Speaker 2: most significant to the title.
- 10:07Speaker 1: Not really, I mean, I mean, you know, when you
- 10:12Speaker 1: get to album number twelve, you know, when you're first
- 10:15Speaker 1: starting out, Yeah, when you're first starting out with your band,
- 10:19Speaker 1: you know, you're like everybody's fighting to get their title
- 10:23Speaker 1: as the title of the record, and you're like, you know,
- 10:27Speaker 1: you've got a million ideas. By the album number twelve
- 10:32Speaker 1: and you've got almost two hundred song titles, you just
- 10:36Speaker 1: wanted to be okay, like good, you know, So at
- 10:41Speaker 1: this point it's actually a big headache of ours. The
- 10:45Speaker 1: three of us like send emails and lists at the
- 10:49Speaker 1: end of the recording and sometimes it's been to the
- 10:53Speaker 1: twelve hour, we don't have a title. That happened with
- 10:57Speaker 1: a Rock Supreme and Power Trio was also the same thing.
- 11:03Speaker 1: Electric Sounds was different because that was a song title,
- 11:07Speaker 1: and then when I guess they heard the song title,
- 11:10Speaker 1: everyone was kind of like, that's a good album title.
- 11:13Speaker 1: So that was kind of in that was that was
- 11:15Speaker 1: an easier album to title. But this one also is
- 11:18Speaker 1: like what are we gonna call it? Like what you
- 11:20Speaker 1: need is not a good title every day a Saturday
- 11:23Speaker 1: Night is a good title, it's just not an album title.
- 11:25Speaker 1: It's too long. Yeah, So Lea Rising was who came
- 11:30Speaker 1: up with I think Rich came up with that title,
- 11:33Speaker 1: and it was basically made sense because our first studio
- 11:36Speaker 1: album is called Born a Lion, and then Leo Rising
- 11:40Speaker 1: is the twelfth album, and twelve is significant in terms
- 11:44Speaker 1: of I don't know, twelve months in the year, twelve,
- 11:48Speaker 1: Disciples at the Last Supper, twelve, twelve twelve. It's a
- 11:52Speaker 1: nice bookend to Born a Lion right before we get
- 11:56Speaker 1: to album number thirteen, which is up next, So in
- 12:00Speaker 1: that sense, it's good Born a Lion. Also, like you know, Leo,
- 12:03Speaker 1: it's a reference to it's an astrological reference. So but
- 12:08Speaker 1: nothing too deep. I mean, we know this is a
- 12:10Speaker 1: band that we don't really think about it too deep.
- 12:14Speaker 1: There's there's other there's other things going on about this
- 12:18Speaker 1: band that are significant enough. But in terms of like
- 12:22Speaker 1: song lyrics and album titles and song titles, like, I
- 12:27Speaker 1: find there's people think about it too deeper than we
- 12:31Speaker 1: actually do.
- 12:32Speaker 2: So I'm glad you actually mentioned album number third a
- 12:36Speaker 2: because you know there's people out there they're going to
- 12:38Speaker 2: say he started with a line in the title. Now
- 12:40Speaker 2: he's going to troth one story. Does that mean he's
- 12:42Speaker 2: finishing up? People always miss three things I saw. I'm
- 12:45Speaker 2: glad he mentioned album third and shut them up. Story
- 12:47Speaker 2: of why okay?
- 12:50Speaker 1: Well, yeah, I mean every band that puts out a
- 12:54Speaker 1: lot of records, they you know, if you're at album
- 12:57Speaker 1: number twenty. Not many bands get to even album number twelve,
- 13:01Speaker 1: So everyone has to cross that line at one point
- 13:05Speaker 1: if they last long enough.
- 13:07Speaker 2: Yeah, and as you say, this is the twelfth album RTE,
- 13:10Speaker 2: So do you think it gets easier or how did
- 13:12Speaker 2: it come up with fresh standing material? The more you're on.
- 13:17Speaker 1: Yeah, right, so you do this twelve times and surprise.
- 13:23Speaker 1: You would think logic dictates that you run out of
- 13:26Speaker 1: ideas and it gets harder. But actually it's actually it's
- 13:29Speaker 1: easier than it was for the first two, three, four albums.
- 13:33Speaker 1: So it's actually easier to write songs. I don't I
- 13:36Speaker 1: used to worry about that, especially. I remember our third album.
- 13:39Speaker 1: I just remember I was up at like five in
- 13:43Speaker 1: the morning, going, we don't have any ideas. I don't
- 13:45Speaker 1: have anything. I can't come up with anything because we
- 13:48Speaker 1: only had seven ideas or eight ideas and we needed like,
- 13:52Speaker 1: you know, ten, eleven, twelve ideas. Now I don't, And
- 13:56Speaker 1: maybe that's just the reason why is I don't worry
- 13:59Speaker 1: about it anymore. I don't even think about it anymore.
- 14:02Speaker 1: I just write, and I know, I know what sounds good,
- 14:07Speaker 1: and I know a little bit better than maybe the
- 14:10Speaker 1: third album, even though by then I knew even I
- 14:13Speaker 1: know more now what this band is and what this
- 14:16Speaker 1: band sounds like, and what riff is going to work
- 14:19Speaker 1: for this band. So what I do is I come
- 14:21Speaker 1: up with all these riffs, I send it to JC,
- 14:24Speaker 1: our bass player, and if he likes it, then he'll
- 14:29Speaker 1: arrange the ideas. So first of all, I gotta it
- 14:34Speaker 1: goes through my vetting process. So there's like, for every
- 14:37Speaker 1: riff I send him, there's ten riffs that were on
- 14:40Speaker 1: the cutting room floor, and then for every ten riffs
- 14:43Speaker 1: I send him, he likes three or four. So there
- 14:47Speaker 1: is a real, real editing process of riffs and songs.
- 14:54Speaker 1: But there isn't any lack of ideas.
- 14:58Speaker 2: L You guys have been going since ninety ninety six
- 15:02Speaker 2: and you've always stayed in the own lay musically without compromise,
- 15:06Speaker 2: And I really admire that about you guys. It's awesome,
- 15:08Speaker 2: but it's getting harder and harder to do in the
- 15:11Speaker 2: modern age of music. Like, do you find that it's
- 15:13Speaker 2: becoming increasingly difficult to stick to your guns and not
- 15:17Speaker 2: follow trends or fashions.
- 15:20Speaker 1: Uh? No, it's quite easy because all the trends and
- 15:22Speaker 1: fashions I'm not really interested in. There's nothing that really
- 15:26Speaker 1: pricks my ears, and I go, WHOA, we should try that.
- 15:30Speaker 1: I think where we're on is a pretty good you know,
- 15:35Speaker 1: I get it. It's kind of like as the every
- 15:38Speaker 1: year goes by, it becomes like an older and older
- 15:42Speaker 1: form of music. But it's timeless, I think, at least
- 15:45Speaker 1: to a certain window of people. But also I think
- 15:49Speaker 1: with the younger generations, there's a lot of them that
- 15:52Speaker 1: go through at least a phase or a trend or
- 15:55Speaker 1: a period where they like this kind of music. And
- 16:00Speaker 1: the best part is when no matter how heavy or
- 16:02Speaker 1: heard a band is or a band they like. Is
- 16:09Speaker 1: a lot of the bands that you know, all these
- 16:12Speaker 1: younger generations like behind the scenes and backstage, they're just
- 16:16Speaker 1: cranking a c DC. I don't care how heavy you
- 16:19Speaker 1: are of a band. I don't care how black your
- 16:22Speaker 1: metal is it's I've trust me. I've seen it way
- 16:27Speaker 1: more than once or twice, where the heaviest band on
- 16:30Speaker 1: the planet you would think is just cranking a CDC
- 16:34Speaker 1: before they go on stage.
- 16:36Speaker 2: The hype get there's hype for the future.
- 16:38Speaker 1: Brother, yeah, backstage like no one sees that, you know.
- 16:43Speaker 2: Oh, now, before I let you go, bro, I've introduced
- 16:45Speaker 2: a new segment called Fighter Bombs. So basically before we've
- 16:47Speaker 2: spike and I've got three social media and I've found
- 16:50Speaker 2: a couple of fight eyes and I want to talk
- 16:51Speaker 2: to you a bit more about Okay, last one, this
- 16:57Speaker 2: one I got.
- 16:59Speaker 1: Okay.
- 17:00Speaker 2: I was feature here on Statute Bowl Beat in two
- 17:02Speaker 2: thousand and seven.
- 17:03Speaker 1: Eight. Yeah, that was in Denmark. That was in Copenhagen, Denmark.
- 17:10Speaker 2: Is that a boxing ring you're in?
- 17:13Speaker 1: It was, Yeah, it was their hometown gig in the
- 17:17Speaker 1: biggest venue in the country. They flew me in to
- 17:20Speaker 1: sing that song, and I think Ross Halfen might have
- 17:23Speaker 1: taken that shot. But the boxing ring was because I
- 17:27Speaker 1: think they had they have or had a song, well,
- 17:31Speaker 1: they have a song about fighting that's been used I
- 17:35Speaker 1: think in UFC as well. I could be wrong about that,
- 17:38Speaker 1: but there is a fighting element to Volbeat, and then
- 17:42Speaker 1: for that show in particular, they got this I don't
- 17:44Speaker 1: know his name, but they got this really really popular
- 17:48Speaker 1: Danish boxer to come out and make an appearance, not
- 17:52Speaker 1: during my song but during the show. So the boxing
- 17:56Speaker 1: motif was it makes sense, you know, cool.
- 18:01Speaker 2: Really cool.
- 18:01Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 18:02Speaker 2: Now the second one, when I found his photo, I
- 18:04Speaker 2: read the post and you said that it was very
- 18:06Speaker 2: special to you, and you can see why. I bet
- 18:10Speaker 2: you remember this conversation like it was yesterday.
- 18:14Speaker 1: Oh yeah, that was on the two thousand and eight
- 18:17Speaker 1: tour we did with Motorhead and Saxon, and that was
- 18:20Speaker 1: in Germany, and I was actually interviewing Lemmy for rock
- 18:26Speaker 1: Hard magazine in Germany, and we had had this thing
- 18:31Speaker 1: planned for this interview scheduled for a while, even though
- 18:35Speaker 1: we were on tour. So yeah, a few times on
- 18:39Speaker 1: that tour he would, you know, I got brought into
- 18:41Speaker 1: the lot to his dressing room and we hung out.
- 18:45Speaker 1: But this one was was a deliberate kind of stage. Well,
- 18:49Speaker 1: it was staged in the sense that it was an
- 18:51Speaker 1: interview that was going on, but that moment, Lemmy's actually
