- 0:08The Book of Ruth begins in dark days, but even
- 0:12in the darkness, God was at work. Through loss,
- 0:15uncertainty, and unexpected turns, we discover a
- 0:19beautiful story of grace, redemption, and hope.
- 0:23Join Scott Pauley for this new study, The Gospel According to
- 0:27Ruth. Light for dark days.
- 0:36We've entitled this study The Gospel According to Ruth
- 0:40because the good news of salvation is not
- 0:45limited to what Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John wrote. In fact,
- 0:49those 4 gospel writers were just showing the culmination of
- 0:53everything that all of the prophets through the centuries in the Old Testament had
- 0:58led up to. And throughout the Old Testament, God gives us pictures
- 1:02of salvation. And for the record, let me just say this before we go any
- 1:06further today: people don't get saved different ways in different
- 1:10time periods. Salvation is always by grace through faith.
- 1:15It is always of the Lord, and it
- 1:18always comes when men simply put their trust in him.
- 1:22And I think the book of Ruth is one of the greatest pictures of that.
- 1:27One of the things you must do as you study these things is compare
- 1:30scripture with scripture. So you take an Old Testament passage like
- 1:34the book of Ruth and you compare it with the New Testament. I, I quoted
- 1:38just a bit of this verse the other day, but let's begin our study
- 1:42of Ruth chapter 2 today in Matthew and in Luke. What do you say?
- 1:46Let's compare scripture with scripture. In Matthew chapter 23 and
- 1:50verse number 37, Jesus is speaking And he says, O Jerusalem,
- 1:54Jerusalem, thou that killest the prophets and stonest
- 1:59them which are sent unto thee, how often would I have gathered
- 2:02thy children together, even as a hen gathereth
- 2:07her chickens under her wings,
- 2:11and ye would not. Did you hear our
- 2:15operative phrase? Under her wings.
- 2:18Again, Luke chapter 13, verse number 34. O Jerusalem,
- 2:21Jerusalem, which killest the prophets and stonest them that are sent unto thee,
- 2:25how often would I have gathered thy children together as a hen doth gather her
- 2:29brood under her wings, and ye
- 2:32would not. You see, this expression, under her
- 2:36wings, is really a revelation of the heart of God.
- 2:40It is the, the loving heart of God not to push
- 2:44men away but to draw men to
- 2:48himself. Man is forever running away
- 2:51from God. The Lord is always seeking to draw us to himself.
- 2:55May I just ask, which direction are you moving today?
- 2:59Are you running to the Lord or running from the Lord?
- 3:02Because true faith is simply coming under his
- 3:07wings. We return now to Ruth chapter number 2, and this is very
- 3:11important because we've learned already that coming under his wings,
- 3:15trusting him, brings protection and gives provision.
- 3:19We come, I think, to the most important thing, and it is this: to come
- 3:23under his wings, to trust the Lord, uh, to, to put
- 3:27your faith in the Lord God is simply to live
- 3:31depending on his presence. It is to come to
- 3:36the person of the Lord himself. Let me say it this way: it is not
- 3:39to get something from God. It is rather to
- 3:43get to God. It's not something, it is someone.
- 3:47Now look at our verse, Ruth chapter 2, verse number 12.
- 3:50The Lord recompense thy work, and a full
- 3:54reward be given thee of the Lord God of Israel, under whose wings thou art
- 3:59come to trust. Would you mark in your Bible twice in verse number
- 4:0312 the name Lord? Now we know he's the God of Israel, and that
- 4:07expression is there as well, but the name Lord, if you're putting your eyes on
- 4:12it right now, you'll see it's in all capital letters, capital L-O-R-D. O-R-D.
- 4:16This was the covenant name. We may use
- 4:20the name today and say it this way, Yahweh or Jehovah,
- 4:24and we do not frankly know exactly how they would have said it. It was
- 4:28a holy name. Did you know it was so holy that they would not
- 4:31have it on their lips, that even when they read the Old Testament scriptures
- 4:36and they came to this name, the scribes would substitute
- 4:39another name, Adonai? For this name because they believed
- 4:44that the name was too holy to be on their lips. We've come
- 4:48a long ways in our world, people taking God's name in vain. So little reverence
- 4:52for the name, the holy name of our God. Did you know that when the
- 4:55scribes were writing out this name, that they would pause when
- 4:59they came to this name and they would take a bath? Think about that.
- 5:03They would put on fresh clothes and they would get a pen
- 5:07that had never before been used to write this name
- 5:11for the Lord. See, this is the great principle.
- 5:15The great principle is that we are coming to the God of covenant.
- 5:19We're coming to the God who makes promises and
- 5:23always keeps his promises. In fact, if you back up
- 5:27in your Bible to Exodus chapter 3, verse 14, this is the name that God
- 5:31spoke to Moses when he said, I am that I Am, the Lord
- 5:35God of your fathers, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God
- 5:39of Jacob. Who is I Am? The ever-present,
- 5:43all-sufficient, eternal God,
- 5:47the God who had no beginning and has no ending, the God who
- 5:50cannot be explained, who cannot, who cannot be imagined.
- 5:55That's our God, and this is the person that we're coming
- 5:58to. Then you come to the end of your New Testament, to Malachi chapter 3
- 6:01and verse number 6, on the last page of your Bible. He says,
- 6:05I am the Lord, I change not.
- 6:10Can I just say to you that the object of our faith is
- 6:14the person of our Lord? This is important.
- 6:18It's not faith in faith. It's not faith in a church, not faith in your
- 6:22family, not faith in yourself. I hear people say, believe in yourself, brother.
- 6:26You'll be disillusioned if you do that. Believe in the Lord.
- 6:29And when you come to the New Testament, Christ alone uses
- 6:33this expression in the New Testament. I am.
- 6:36I am the way, the truth, and the life. I am the bread. I am
- 6:40the water. I am the resurrection and the life. I am. Why?
- 6:45Because he is the one we are coming to. See, the heart
- 6:49of our Savior is simply to bring us to the true and living God.
- 6:53Can I just say But on the cross,
- 6:56the Lord spread out those wings. Would you look at the cross
- 7:00through the eye of faith right now? Look at him there with his arms outstretched
- 7:04on Calvary. Can I tell you, that's the wings of the love of God reaching
- 7:08for all of humanity. They're bloodstained wings.
- 7:13They are— they're reaching out to cover all who
- 7:16will come to them. Have you come to the Lord? Let me give
- 7:21you an amazing verse at the end of our Old Testament.
- 7:24Go in your Bible just for a moment to the book of Malachi. I quoted
- 7:27Malachi chapter 3 and verse number 6 a moment ago, but let me show you
- 7:30a fascinating expression found at the end of our Old
- 7:34Testament scripture. Malachi chapter 4 and verse number 2
- 7:38says this: But unto you that fear my name
- 7:43shall the Son of Righteousness arise with healing in his
- 7:46wings, and ye shall go forth and grow up as calves
- 7:51of the stall. Do you hear that expression, healing in
- 7:54his wings. Literally, the idea here is the
- 7:59corner of the garment. Do you remember that the high priest
- 8:03would have tassels, uh, on, on the edge, on the hem
- 8:07of the garment, bells and pomegranates in the Old Testament? Well,
- 8:10when you come to the New Testament, there was a woman who had an issue
- 8:14of blood. Do you remember that? And she fights her way through the crowd and
- 8:18she reaches out to simply touch the hem of
- 8:22Christ's garment. What was the significance
- 8:26of that? And the Bible says when she touched the hem of his garment,
- 8:28virtue went out of him into her, and immediately she was healed.
- 8:31Do you remember that story? Well, she was exercising faith.
- 8:35She was trusting for the wings
- 8:39of the garment, the healing in his wings. Can I
- 8:42just say to you that even the edge of the grace of God is
- 8:46enough to meet the deepest need in a person's life? I don't know how desperate
- 8:50you may be, but I'm going to tell you, if you'll reach out by faith
- 8:52to the Lord today and just trust him, you'll find those
- 8:56healing wings of our Messiah. You'll find the forgiveness of Jesus
- 9:00Christ, because he's the person we are coming to trust.
- 9:04He is the Lord under whose wings
- 9:08we find all that we need.
