- 0:05Speaker 1: I'm back in our studios, back together, the automotive Industry's
- 0:10Speaker 1: Kamala Harris. Thanks, thanks for coming in cackles.
- 0:15Speaker 2: Yeah, but I'm not pretending to be a murdering journalist.
- 0:18Speaker 1: Either, am I. I've said that from the start. I
- 0:20Speaker 1: don't know what the fuck I'm doing.
- 0:23Speaker 3: I'm glad this has not been six months now, no
- 0:25Speaker 3: between dranks.
- 0:26Speaker 1: Good to see you. You've cleaned up. You've really cleaned
- 0:29Speaker 1: your habit up. You're not living in the box anymore. Actually,
- 0:33Speaker 1: that's a lie. Geelong is a how is that joint going?
- 0:37Speaker 2: It's a moment, Yeah, mainly leaving it.
- 0:40Speaker 1: Are you in Caria? Are you in?
- 0:43Speaker 2: You know they call me the King of Kiah.
- 0:46Speaker 1: Yeah, they got you the big dog. Actually, I remember
- 0:49Speaker 1: when I was living in Geelong. I was driving a
- 0:52Speaker 1: dats in two sixties that at the time, and because
- 0:56Speaker 1: literally it would take me half a tank to get
- 0:58Speaker 1: to Geelong and half a ten to get to Melbourne.
- 1:01Speaker 1: So I would stop in at the servo just sort
- 1:04Speaker 1: of you know the pullover where just outside cryo there,
- 1:08Speaker 1: and as you're coming in it's like a slip lane.
- 1:11Speaker 1: This fucking idiot was driving up like the split lane
- 1:14Speaker 1: at like one hundred k's an hour, and I was like,
- 1:16Speaker 1: what is it? Nearly took me right, and so I
- 1:19Speaker 1: remember I tootored my horn at him and he stopped
- 1:23Speaker 1: at the lights. He could have made it, but he
- 1:25Speaker 1: decided to stop. I'm behind him, and as I'm about
- 1:29Speaker 1: twenty meters behind him, he comes out of his car
- 1:32Speaker 1: with a crowbar. It was like dog man off I
- 1:38Speaker 1: current affair back. I'm like, okay, please, please, please, don't
- 1:43Speaker 1: hurt my precious car. And I didn't hurt you can't
- 1:45Speaker 1: do that.
- 1:46Speaker 2: No, you were pretty good about it.
- 1:48Speaker 3: I did have to smack you with a rolled up
- 1:50Speaker 3: newspaper that does sound like Geelong.
- 1:52Speaker 1: Yeah, interesting spot. I did miss it. Actually, I remember starting.
- 1:55Speaker 1: I used to start. I worked at the radio station
- 1:57Speaker 1: there and I look, okay, right, it doesn't rock, it rocks.
- 2:02Speaker 1: I remember I'd start on a Saturday morning. I'd do
- 2:05Speaker 1: the weekend shift as well, and be walking in to
- 2:09Speaker 1: the radio station at five in the morning. And I
- 2:13Speaker 1: was living just up near Geelong Geelong Hospital and it's
- 2:18Speaker 1: like a five minute walk if that so, it's a
- 2:21Speaker 1: five minute walk. So I'm walking down five in the
- 2:24Speaker 1: morning and literally got like attempted to be jumped by
- 2:30Speaker 1: about six blokes just chasing me to fucking work and
- 2:34Speaker 1: as and back then the bottom of the radio station
- 2:38Speaker 1: was a bank, and so you take the elevator up
- 2:40Speaker 1: to the radio station. So quickly jumped in the quickly
- 2:43Speaker 1: got into the sort of bottom complex elevator. Sorry, the
- 2:47Speaker 1: sliding glass doors open. Quickly press the close button and
- 2:52Speaker 1: just like it was like a movie, just as they
- 2:54Speaker 1: were coming up banging on the doors. Oh Jesus, you know, yeah,
- 3:00Speaker 1: I thought it was a strange thing for my mum
- 3:02Speaker 1: to do, but yeah it was. Look geelong times, man, gee,
- 3:06Speaker 1: long times. Yeah, what's been happening with you?
- 3:10Speaker 2: What has been going on? Oh? We both recently drove
- 3:14Speaker 2: the Iron five in. Oh my god, such a good car,
- 3:18Speaker 2: isn't it.
- 3:19Speaker 1: That is the greatest electric car, at least the greatest
- 3:22Speaker 1: performance electric car there is. It's yes, Oh my god,
- 3:25Speaker 1: it's immensely perfect. It's just so great in every way.
- 3:30Speaker 1: I love it.
- 3:31Speaker 2: They've done such a good job with it.
- 3:32Speaker 3: I actually I had the chance to drive the RN
- 3:36Speaker 3: twenty two E, which was the prototype for the On
- 3:39Speaker 3: five in, at an event in Germany a year or
- 3:42Speaker 3: two ago, and I was blown away with that that's
- 3:44Speaker 3: when they were still playing around with gearshifts and stuff.
- 3:47Speaker 3: Then I got to drive it in Sweden when they
- 3:50Speaker 3: were doing the final stages of the ice testing for
- 3:53Speaker 3: the stability controls, and I was really impressed with it.
- 3:56Speaker 3: Then when we drove the final vehicle, actually because I
- 4:01Speaker 3: did think at the time the gear shifts and some
- 4:03Speaker 3: of the stuff that they had was a bit gimmicky.
- 4:05Speaker 3: ORE didn't know how it would work. When we drove
- 4:07Speaker 3: the final vehicle, I was blown away with how well
- 4:09Speaker 3: everything was integrated.
- 4:10Speaker 1: Well you know what that was I saw on Kodogan's podcast.
- 4:13Speaker 1: That was that particular segment of the car I think
- 4:16Speaker 1: was developed at least helped developed by an Australian guy.
- 4:20Speaker 3: Yeah, Tim, Yeah, he was basically with that team that
- 4:23Speaker 3: developed that car under the leadership of Albert Bierman, who
- 4:27Speaker 3: was the former boss of him. And to me, when
- 4:30Speaker 3: he puts his name to something, if it's shit, he
- 4:32Speaker 3: doesn't want to know about it. And in this instance,
- 4:34Speaker 3: I think that he showed that they can really do
- 4:36Speaker 3: a performance ev And what's become evident since then when
- 4:39Speaker 3: we drove it at the proving ground, we're able to
- 4:42Speaker 3: do like seven farst slaps when it was quite hot
- 4:45Speaker 3: and it had no power degradation. The brakes were fantastic.
- 4:49Speaker 3: Some cars you get one lap in of the right
- 4:51Speaker 3: and handling track and they will begin falling apart and
- 4:53Speaker 3: break fades like it was just garbage. So that end
- 4:57Speaker 3: is a bona fide electric car. And even to the
- 5:00Speaker 3: point now where Tesla they held the release of the
- 5:02Speaker 3: Model three Performance. All three Performance was then released and
- 5:06Speaker 3: it has just been a steaming pile of the pool
- 5:08Speaker 3: in terms of the reviews from people who actually drive
- 5:11Speaker 3: like it's meant to be driven. So it is interesting
- 5:13Speaker 3: that Tesla will now need to go back to the
- 5:15Speaker 3: drawing board and probably pull apart in Iro five and
- 5:17Speaker 3: to figure out how to make an electric car that
- 5:19Speaker 3: doesn't suck when it comes to performance driving.
- 5:21Speaker 1: Yeah, I went in the Tesla Performance and I was like,
- 5:24Speaker 1: it just it didn't feel like even that much of
- 5:26Speaker 1: a jump from the old one. Yeah, it didn't even
- 5:28Speaker 1: feel like a like a two point Ohero, do you
- 5:30Speaker 1: know what I mean?
- 5:31Speaker 2: Yeah? But that I actually can I say as well, Tesla.
- 5:36Speaker 2: I don't know.
- 5:37Speaker 3: My video might be out by the time this podcast
- 5:40Speaker 3: is out, but Tesla, they are just such conniving connivers.
- 5:46Speaker 2: Because they excuse.
- 5:47Speaker 1: Me for a second, sorry, yes, what really, Okay, I'll
- 5:54Speaker 1: take him out. I'll take him out for you. For you,
- 5:57Speaker 1: Jordan Peterson, is that you do no worries. Sorry, go on.
- 6:01Speaker 3: So typically when we take a car to the proving
- 6:03Speaker 3: ground to film our video content, we let them know
- 6:05Speaker 3: that it's a private road and some insurers don't cover it,
- 6:09Speaker 3: and in the past with Tesla, they've put speed.
- 6:12Speaker 2: Limitters on their cars for some bizarre reason.
- 6:14Speaker 3: So this time around, we had the Model three Performance
- 6:17Speaker 3: lined up for a review and we said to them, look,
- 6:19Speaker 3: you just need to make sure you remove the speed limitter,
- 6:21Speaker 3: and they go, you know, we'll need to get approval.
- 6:24Speaker 3: And just so you know, we're not allowing you to
- 6:26Speaker 3: test track mode. I'm like, what the fuck why we're
- 6:29Speaker 3: on a track and yeah, we test cars. One of
- 6:32Speaker 3: my other colleagues literally took it to a racetrack and
- 6:34Speaker 3: they would have let him test track mode and he
- 6:37Speaker 3: cooked the brakes on the car and said it in
- 6:39Speaker 3: his video, and they wouldn't allow us to test track mode.
- 6:41Speaker 3: It's like he's had a fucking track, Like, how much
- 6:44Speaker 3: more track mode track do you need? So anyway, I
- 6:47Speaker 3: said to her look, we're not going to take the car,
- 6:49Speaker 3: then I'll just go rent one or get one off
- 6:51Speaker 3: someone who owns one. Because if you can't stand behind
- 6:53Speaker 3: your product and you're too scared for us to actually
- 6:55Speaker 3: test it, then I can tell you right now your
- 6:57Speaker 3: product is going to absolutely suck it. I don't even
- 7:00Speaker 3: need to drive it. So I just think Tesla has
- 7:02Speaker 3: just become so wrapped up in its own bs that,
- 7:06Speaker 3: you know, it's just really quite frustrating when you can't
- 7:09Speaker 3: actually test the car.
- 7:10Speaker 2: It's like why bother putting a car out to test?
- 7:12Speaker 2: All they do is give them out to influences.
- 7:14Speaker 3: We go, oh, it's so great, it's so quick, Like,
- 7:17Speaker 3: put did your test, You drive it around for a
- 7:18Speaker 3: little bit, and that was it. We're going to actually
- 7:20Speaker 3: test it so that if you do want to buy
- 7:22Speaker 3: it and take it to a track for the advertised
- 7:24Speaker 3: track mode, you'll know that it is going to last
- 7:26Speaker 3: a lap, which it just hasn't been able to do
- 7:28Speaker 3: it so far.
- 7:29Speaker 1: Yeah, and I think, yeah, when we go if we
- 7:31Speaker 1: go back to the Ionic Fi, then there is such
- 7:34Speaker 1: sophistication in that car, both in an engineering aspect and
- 7:38Speaker 1: a design aspect. And I think just the imagination too
- 7:41Speaker 1: behind it. I know that sounds weird, but the fact
- 7:44Speaker 1: that someone thought, why don't we make this car really
- 7:47Speaker 1: feel like a performance ice car? And it really does,
- 7:52Speaker 1: and it freaks you out how accurate they've got this too,
- 7:55Speaker 1: Like everything from the pool when you're changing gears, to
- 7:58Speaker 1: the revs to just there. It's so hard to get
- 8:04Speaker 1: a normal performance ice car, I guess, to feel a
- 8:08Speaker 1: road so well. Yet they've done it kind of in
- 8:12Speaker 1: a digital way, if that makes sense. Ye, do you
- 8:14Speaker 1: know what I mean?
- 8:15Speaker 2: No, they've done an unreal job.
- 8:16Speaker 3: So the only downside to that is the price, especially
- 8:20Speaker 3: with Tesla's repricing of the Model three Performance. So when
- 8:23Speaker 3: I first bought a Model three Performance, it was one
- 8:25Speaker 3: hundred and about one hundred and five on the road.
- 8:29Speaker 3: So now the Model three Performance, because they've gutted the price,
- 8:32Speaker 3: is like eighty two grand or something plus on roads.
- 8:34Speaker 3: The Onic five Event is one hundred and ten or
- 8:36Speaker 3: one hundred and eleven plus on roads. So it is
- 8:39Speaker 3: definitely a much better cast, significantly better in every way
- 8:42Speaker 3: than a Model three Performance. But is it that much better?
- 8:47Speaker 3: I don't like. Yeah, likely it is, but can you
- 8:51Speaker 3: justify spending an extra thirty grand and look, to me,
- 8:56Speaker 3: I think you can. But I just don't think they'll
- 8:57Speaker 3: be able to sell it to the masses because I
- 9:00Speaker 3: think a lot of people will look at that and go, well,
- 9:02Speaker 3: I'm not going to spend an extra thirty grand. I'll
- 9:04Speaker 3: just get the Tesla instead, because a lot of people
- 9:06Speaker 3: won't access the stuff that the end does.
- 9:09Speaker 1: I think this car, I think this is the sort
- 9:11Speaker 1: of car, even being an ev it sits with a
- 9:14Speaker 1: certain bracket, and I don't actually think it sits next
- 9:17Speaker 1: to a.
- 9:20Speaker 2: Tesla, No, exactly, this is the thing.
- 9:22Speaker 3: It actually sits next to faster internal combustion cars, which
- 9:25Speaker 3: are all significantly more expensive.
- 9:27Speaker 2: Yeah, that is clear as day.
- 9:29Speaker 1: And so that's what I'm saying though, So I thinks
- 9:31Speaker 1: that problem right, I think, in no respect, one hundred
- 9:33Speaker 1: and ten, one hundred and twenty thousand isn't too bad
- 9:36Speaker 1: for what you're getting with them.
- 9:37Speaker 3: But the problem is that everyone will compare it to
- 9:39Speaker 3: a Model three. And I think that's the biggest issue.
- 9:41Speaker 3: If you drive them both sides to side and back
- 9:42Speaker 3: to back, you would never get the Model three. But
- 9:46Speaker 3: I just think that when people look at this and
- 9:48Speaker 3: they see the cost of EV's going down. I think
- 9:51Speaker 3: they get a bit stick of shock when they see
- 9:53Speaker 3: the price of it.
- 9:55Speaker 1: I don't know, Yeah, I think this is just so
- 9:58Speaker 1: out of a Tesler Brackett. I can't see how people
- 10:02Speaker 1: would I mean, technically, I guess you could compare it,
- 10:04Speaker 1: but I just think they're two completely different cars, and
- 10:06Speaker 1: I don't think I don't think that really journalists should
- 10:09Speaker 1: be comparing this to a Tesla Model three Performance, but.
- 10:13Speaker 2: They will marry.
- 10:17Speaker 1: Those fake sounds are pretty good too.
- 10:19Speaker 3: I think they're great, and a lot of people that
- 10:21Speaker 3: own this car now are using those sounds because it
- 10:25Speaker 3: just gives you that sort of realistic driving experience. It's
- 10:28Speaker 3: just as I find it really fascinating.
- 10:31Speaker 1: It's such a fun car. It's really great. Actually, there's
- 10:33Speaker 1: a dude I'd love to get him on. We should
- 10:35Speaker 1: call him on the podcast next time. But he's a
- 10:37Speaker 1: bit of an influencer with this car, and he literally
- 10:41Speaker 1: has a GT three RS next to it, so there
- 10:45Speaker 1: is two sort of you know, cars in his garage,
- 10:48Speaker 1: and it's interesting to hear his thoughts on how different
- 10:53Speaker 1: and what he enjoys about each one. I think the
- 10:56Speaker 1: thing that I really loved about the end was you
- 11:00Speaker 1: can take this from a performance what feels like a
- 11:03Speaker 1: let's call it a performance ice car to a quite
- 11:07Speaker 1: smooth commuter, like a daily commuter. And yeah, at the
- 11:11Speaker 1: flick of a switch, it's just if you you can
- 11:13Speaker 1: and you can flick between the two so much. I'm
- 11:16Speaker 1: just sort of I was thinking about.
- 11:17Speaker 3: It, you know what, just to put some of the
- 11:19Speaker 3: speed into into reference for people and perspective.
- 11:24Speaker 2: Were actually shot a drag.
- 11:25Speaker 3: Racing series where we drag race the Ionic five N
- 11:27Speaker 3: up against literally everything from a Rolls Royce to a five.
- 11:33Speaker 2: Million dollar Lamborghini that is limited in numbers is that
- 11:36Speaker 2: the new diablou Kutas.
- 11:39Speaker 3: But one of the cars that it genuinely surprised me
- 11:42Speaker 3: by was McLaren p one, which is which was one
- 11:45Speaker 3: of the Holy Trinity.
- 11:45Speaker 2: It's literally a hypercar.
- 11:47Speaker 3: The Ironic five N crossed the finish line in a
- 11:50Speaker 3: rolling race at almost the exact same time like it
- 11:54Speaker 3: was a bees dick in it. So to think that
- 11:57Speaker 3: that a hyena can match like what is now a
- 12:00Speaker 3: three million dollar McLaren p one, I think it's pretty unreal.
- 12:04Speaker 2: Done such a good job with it.
- 12:05Speaker 1: I saw someone take theirs to like a drag track
- 12:09Speaker 1: and it was just hilarious, like everything that was coming
- 12:11Speaker 1: up against it, I just smoke. It was what's this
- 12:15Speaker 1: guy even doing? He just like cruises on out of there. Yeah. Interesting, interesting,
- 12:20Speaker 1: such a brilliant car. God, I'd love to drive like.
- 12:23Speaker 1: I'd literally love that as a as a daily car
- 12:26Speaker 1: like I think that was my one. Yeah, maybe I will,
- 12:29Speaker 1: maybe with my with my Marrick dollars, maybe I will.
- 12:32Speaker 2: And the what else are you driving at the moment?
- 12:35Speaker 1: Oh, you want to know what it needs to be?
- 12:39Speaker 1: Would you like to know what else I'm driving at
- 12:40Speaker 1: the moment.
- 12:41Speaker 4: My genis GD sixty on the way to the salon.
- 12:46Speaker 4: It's beautiful, it's spawty, it's a little bit ritzy, and
- 12:51Speaker 4: my dog Pavley loves just sit in the back and
- 12:55Speaker 4: as he has a doggy baby Gina, he get a
- 12:58Speaker 4: little bit of froth on his nose. What's that little puplay?
- 13:05Speaker 1: I'll stop clicking up bum Only Steven could.
- 13:09Speaker 2: Do that.
- 13:16Speaker 1: Anyway. I don't think I've got that car for much longer.
- 13:19Speaker 1: I'm still gonna say, but look we do the little
- 13:21Speaker 1: voice as I'm just gonna tell you, I quite like
- 13:23Speaker 1: the car.
- 13:23Speaker 2: I really enjoy it.
- 13:24Speaker 1: I'll tell you what was. Okay, this is gonna this
- 13:27Speaker 1: is gonna divide me and you in a big way.
- 13:30Speaker 1: There's a car that I drove and our bloody was.
- 13:33Speaker 1: I'm so confused as to why I like it. I'm confused.
- 13:37Speaker 1: I'm confused as why I like this car. Guess what
- 13:40Speaker 1: it is? What do you think it could be?
- 13:44Speaker 2: Oh, it's Trevor's car.
- 13:45Speaker 1: The Jesus No, No, a about five hundred eight No, that's.
- 13:53Speaker 2: Just an absolute no.
- 13:55Speaker 1: I know. Here's the thing. Mine was tennis ball green
- 13:59Speaker 1: in fact a look like a sleepy tennis ball with
- 14:01Speaker 1: its new lights and all that sort of stuff. It
- 14:04Speaker 1: does less than two hundred k's in range, Like you're
- 14:07Speaker 1: charging this every couple of days. It's sixty thousand dollars
- 14:13Speaker 1: and it makes fake noises. It's just so fun.
- 14:18Speaker 2: I don't know why I like it. I don't know why.
- 14:21Speaker 1: It's just like it's such a dicky little car. I
- 14:24Speaker 1: love it. Just stop stop saying that.
- 14:27Speaker 4: Stop it Jenesis sixty.
- 14:36Speaker 1: I quite like what what did?
- 14:37Speaker 4: What?
- 14:37Speaker 1: Did you not? Like?
- 14:39Speaker 2: Everything? Like? What outrageously overpriced? I just think it is
- 14:42Speaker 2: a stupid car.
- 14:44Speaker 1: What about the like the competition on like the we had.
- 14:49Speaker 3: We used to own one at Car Advice and I
- 14:52Speaker 3: hated that thing. It had no cruise control, it was
- 14:55Speaker 3: ship to drive.
- 14:56Speaker 1: It's just no, the buttons are weird on it, really stupid.
- 15:01Speaker 1: I've got made who is young bloke here? I work
- 15:04Speaker 1: right and poor dude like he bought one brand new
- 15:10Speaker 1: from the dealer an E No, not an E, just
- 15:14Speaker 1: a yeah, ah put it from the dealer. And this
- 15:18Speaker 1: is a guy who's like it's his first big car,
- 15:21Speaker 1: like his first brand new car, you know, and he's
- 15:25Speaker 1: already like it's fully conked out. It's a break new car.
- 15:29Speaker 1: Oh dude, you can't.
- 15:32Speaker 3: Like I just would not trust an Italian electric car.
- 15:35Speaker 1: Yeah, I don't know. I find it fun. It's a
- 15:38Speaker 1: good little commuter.
- 15:39Speaker 2: Now it's speaking of conking out.
- 15:41Speaker 3: Oh yeah, let's talk about what is going to be
- 15:45Speaker 3: quite a costly little recall. Yeah, not in Australia at
- 15:49Speaker 3: this stage, but in the States, more than one hundred
- 15:53Speaker 3: thousand Toyter, Tundra and Lexus Lex V six petrol engines
- 15:58Speaker 3: need to be replaced.
- 15:59Speaker 1: More so the Tundra. They ryan the Alex that's a
- 16:03Speaker 1: beautiful looking car.
- 16:04Speaker 3: So there is a lot of engines. So basically what
- 16:08Speaker 3: they found was some examples of the engine had debris circulating. Well,
- 16:14Speaker 3: they found debris, and the concern is that it could
- 16:18Speaker 3: circulate through the engine lead to knocking, rough running, and
- 16:21Speaker 3: even a loss of powrot speed which could lead to
- 16:23Speaker 3: an accident or death. So to me, this is going
- 16:28Speaker 3: to be very expensive, and I think as well, hats
- 16:30Speaker 3: off to Toyota because a lot of car companies would
- 16:32Speaker 3: just go, oh, see how it goes, and then if
- 16:36Speaker 3: your engine shits itself, will then fix it. This is
- 16:38Speaker 3: what Ford did with power shift, right. They knew that
- 16:41Speaker 3: those gearboxes were shit and they would only replace them
- 16:44Speaker 3: if you had a problem, went through like three other
- 16:48Speaker 3: attempts to fix it, which was that they never really worked,
- 16:51Speaker 3: and then eventually you'd have to get the gearbox replaced.
- 16:53Speaker 3: By that point, people are like pulling their hair at
- 16:55Speaker 3: toy It is just going no, look, there's the risk
- 16:57Speaker 3: of it happening. It may only it may happen, But
- 17:01Speaker 3: we want to get them, get them out and replace them.
- 17:03Speaker 1: It's a big call. It's a big thing to do.
- 17:05Speaker 1: So even though there's hundred thousand.
- 17:06Speaker 3: Engines, right, yeah, even though this the alex is sold
- 17:09Speaker 3: in Australia with this engine. We still don't know whether
- 17:12Speaker 3: it is an issue for Australian vehicles. We're still yet
- 17:16Speaker 3: to find out.
- 17:16Speaker 1: But I thought it was not affecting the hybrids, right.
- 17:20Speaker 2: Yeah, it's got nothing to do with the hybrid stuff.
- 17:22Speaker 1: It's all.
- 17:24Speaker 2: Three point four later. So yeah, that's that's big news.
- 17:27Speaker 3: So for Toyota that really has rarely has a big step,
- 17:31Speaker 3: that is that is a massive, massive thing.
- 17:33Speaker 1: Being the Kamala Harris of the automotive scene, you should
- 17:36Speaker 1: probably shed some light on this one. This is okay,
- 17:40Speaker 1: I'm kind of taking this one with a grain of
- 17:42Speaker 1: salt because Trump has pledged to kill I guess, or
- 17:46Speaker 1: just block Chinese TV subsidiaries.
- 17:49Speaker 2: What's that just the long pause? Trump has pledged.
- 17:51Speaker 3: To kill dot dot dot. Yeah, we'll get back to
- 17:54Speaker 3: you after this short break. So he's basically and I
- 17:57Speaker 3: was watching the Republican convention when he got up to speak,
- 18:01Speaker 3: I sat it running in the background.
- 18:02Speaker 1: And then is your mentor and he's your religious icon.
- 18:06Speaker 2: He's a zero.
- 18:07Speaker 3: Yeah, so absolutely, But anyway, we won't get into that.
- 18:12Speaker 3: So he got to the end of it and he
- 18:14Speaker 3: basically said that if he's elected he will end the
- 18:17Speaker 3: electric vehicle mandate on day one, thereby saving the US
- 18:21Speaker 3: auto industry from complete obliteration, which is happening right now,
- 18:25Speaker 3: and saving US customers thousands and thousands of dollars per cup. Now,
- 18:29Speaker 3: there is a lot of merit to this because at
- 18:31Speaker 3: the moment in the States they have federal tax credits
- 18:34Speaker 3: for electric vehicles. Tesla has basically funded their business globally
- 18:39Speaker 3: from credits like this and fines from other manufacturers overseas.
- 18:44Speaker 2: And guess who's paying all of that, Well, the American taxpayer,
- 18:47Speaker 2: right correct.
- 18:48Speaker 3: So the American taxpayer, I think doesn't really know that
- 18:50Speaker 3: the scale of this. And Biden has already committed billions
- 18:54Speaker 3: and billions and billions of dollars to this, to this
- 18:58Speaker 3: green subsidy. And he then went on to say that
- 19:02Speaker 3: he will hit Chinese vehicles with one hundred percent tariff
- 19:05Speaker 3: in the US. Now, one hundred percent, I don't really
- 19:09Speaker 3: sell that many Chinese vehicles in the US anyway, but
- 19:12Speaker 3: one hundred percent is significantly more than what they've just
- 19:14Speaker 3: put in it in Europe, which varies between twenty and
- 19:17Speaker 3: forty percent. But the funny thing is some Chinese companies
- 19:19Speaker 3: are saying that's fine, we can still make money off
- 19:22Speaker 3: that would.
- 19:23Speaker 1: This affect Tesla because obviously Tesla like make a lot
- 19:26Speaker 1: of their cars in the States, they also make them
- 19:29Speaker 1: in China.
- 19:29Speaker 2: Yep.
- 19:30Speaker 1: And I know it's weird because like and Elin and
- 19:33Speaker 1: Trump are.
- 19:34Speaker 2: Like, well, that's the thing.
- 19:35Speaker 3: I think Elon saw what was happening, and he's committed
- 19:38Speaker 3: to something like sixty million dollars a month to fund
- 19:41Speaker 3: Trump's campaign, So I think he's hoping for a favorable
- 19:44Speaker 3: outcome here. But I think realistically what will happen is
- 19:47Speaker 3: they'll probably dial back those subsidies and I think that
- 19:49Speaker 3: he will say you will only be allowed to sell
- 19:52Speaker 3: vehicles if they're made in this country.
- 19:55Speaker 2: So it'll be interesting.
- 19:58Speaker 3: I think it's do you think it'll worked, Well, look
- 20:01Speaker 3: at it this way. If you don't do it, you'll
- 20:03Speaker 3: end up with what we have in Australia where you
- 20:05Speaker 3: just cannot manufacture anything because it's insanely expensive and everything
- 20:09Speaker 3: from China is cheaper.
- 20:10Speaker 2: So you know, it's fine.
- 20:12Speaker 3: For the Australian consumer, but ultimately you're going to get
- 20:14Speaker 3: to a point where you just don't have a manufacturing industry.
- 20:17Speaker 3: And the issue they have in the States is the
- 20:19Speaker 3: automotive unions over there are so so powerful that you
- 20:24Speaker 3: just cannot do anything without their endorsement. And Tesla is
- 20:27Speaker 3: one of the few manufacturers that doesn't have unionism, so
- 20:31Speaker 3: it means that they can get around some of these issues.
- 20:33Speaker 3: But when these unions come in and just demand more
- 20:36Speaker 3: and more money, it just becomes impossible to manufacture cars.
- 20:39Speaker 3: So the only way around that is by saying to
- 20:41Speaker 3: all these brands, you know, you will get hit with
- 20:43Speaker 3: tariffs unless you manufacture here, and that, in theory, should
- 20:47Speaker 3: spread out those jobs and make it more cost effective
- 20:49Speaker 3: to manufacture cars in.
- 20:52Speaker 2: The States.
- 20:53Speaker 1: So yeah, there a isn't there A. Isn't there an
- 20:57Speaker 1: American brand apart from Tesla that manufacturers in China?
- 21:04Speaker 2: Oh there's there's heaps, There's heaps.
- 21:05Speaker 3: So the difference though is Tesla was the first car
- 21:09Speaker 3: brand that didn't have to have a JV with a
- 21:10Speaker 3: Chinese company. So what I've heard from some sources is
- 21:14Speaker 3: that when you're a manufacturer, like let's say Volkswagen, and
- 21:18Speaker 3: you go to manufacturer in China and you have.
- 21:20Speaker 2: Your JV, typically the JV is fifty or fifty.
- 21:23Speaker 3: One percent owned by the Chinese company, and even though
- 21:26Speaker 3: you have joint decision making, they pretty much call all
- 21:29Speaker 3: the shots.
- 21:30Speaker 2: So when you go, oh, look.
- 21:31Speaker 3: We'd like to release this thing, and they go, I'm
- 21:33Speaker 3: you sure about that, and you go no, no, that.
- 21:35Speaker 2: Was a terrible idea. Kevin's fired.
- 21:38Speaker 3: So yeah, I think that this is you know, Tesla
- 21:42Speaker 3: is one of the only ones that doesn't have that.
- 21:43Speaker 3: But ultimately, you know, as we've seen, Chinese government has
- 21:47Speaker 3: If you run a company in China, they have access
- 21:49Speaker 3: to your information. Yeah, so I don't know how they
- 21:52Speaker 3: get around that.
- 21:52Speaker 1: But and the cameras in your phone and a lot
- 21:54Speaker 1: of other things.
- 21:55Speaker 2: No comment, they what they do.
- 21:56Speaker 1: They have accessed to a lot of things.
- 21:58Speaker 2: Yeah, but I'm sure many companies do.
- 22:01Speaker 1: To have access to your TikTok account, I know what's
- 22:03Speaker 1: going on and you snapchot.
- 22:05Speaker 2: All the letters on the US.
- 22:07Speaker 3: But yeah, I think it is interesting times. If Trump
- 22:10Speaker 3: gets in, I think we're going to see I can
- 22:13Speaker 3: see that Silicon Valley is excited because he's he's his
- 22:17Speaker 3: vice president is a tech businessman, so it's great news
- 22:21Speaker 3: for the tech industry. He's talking up crypto, which is
- 22:24Speaker 3: fantastic news for anyone in that industry.
- 22:26Speaker 1: For you and me. But yeah, he took me n
- 22:29Speaker 1: fts buy any chance.
- 22:31Speaker 2: I look there naturally on the way out. It's like
- 22:34Speaker 2: a penfolds gronge a.
- 22:36Speaker 1: You can't even pronounce it. How do you pronounce it?
- 22:40Speaker 2: You leave it in the cupboard.
- 22:41Speaker 1: It will go up in value, even your young d NFTs.
- 22:45Speaker 3: Unlikely but anyway, but yeah, look, I think that it is.
- 22:50Speaker 3: It is interesting times and I can't wait to see
- 22:52Speaker 3: what happens. If he gets in, you'll get in, you
- 22:54Speaker 3: know you reckon?
- 22:55Speaker 1: Yes, of course, of course I think Camala, Mala, Camilla.
- 23:02Speaker 1: I'm sorry, I can't say her name. Kamala. No wait, sorry, no,
- 23:07Speaker 1: I can't do it.
- 23:08Speaker 3: Kamala, Come on, Kamala? Is it Kamela or Kamala camel tuck? Anyway,
- 23:15Speaker 3: So another story that I thought was interesting. Actually two more,
- 23:19Speaker 3: this one plus another one. Volkswagen owners are claiming that
- 23:23Speaker 3: steeringwel buttons are causing crashes.
- 23:25Speaker 1: Oh yeah, so.
- 23:26Speaker 3: Technology Publication ARS Technica reports that at least thirteen crashers
- 23:31Speaker 3: crash reports have been filed in the US National Highway
- 23:35Speaker 3: Traffic Safety Administration, many of which involve certain Volkswagen vehicles
- 23:40Speaker 3: hitting objects while parking.
- 23:42Speaker 1: You tried to tell them with the haptic touch, you
- 23:44Speaker 1: tried to.
- 23:45Speaker 2: I did, And this is the annoying thing.
- 23:46Speaker 3: Every time we took one of their cars for a
- 23:48Speaker 3: drive around the proving ground sports cars, my hands would
- 23:52Speaker 3: be on fire. I'm like, what the fuck is going
- 23:54Speaker 3: on here? And it was the heated steering wheel. It's
- 23:56Speaker 3: the capacitive touch button was right on the edge, so
- 23:58Speaker 3: you keep rolling onto it. And I think a lot
- 24:01Speaker 3: of owners just struggle with using these correctly and they're
- 24:04Speaker 3: basically phasing them out. They've gone back, right, yeah, but
- 24:07Speaker 3: some cars still have still have the.
- 24:10Speaker 1: Tig Is it the tig One's gone back? Yeah, tig
- 24:13Speaker 1: one amrok yep. I think the new Golf eight point
- 24:17Speaker 1: five Yeah, oh god, do you know what? They need
- 24:21Speaker 1: to also stop the haptic touch of volume control, which
- 24:24Speaker 1: wasn't that bad, but it was just like, guys, what
- 24:27Speaker 1: are you doing? You don't need to do that? And
- 24:29Speaker 1: they've got that have they got that in? They've got
- 24:32Speaker 1: that in more than Volkswagen Skoda yep.
- 24:36Speaker 3: So they are fixing that and it is actually exciting
- 24:39Speaker 3: because Rivian and Volkswagen have signed like a five billion
- 24:43Speaker 3: dollar deal for Rivian to supply the software stack for
- 24:46Speaker 3: Volkswagen's future evs from twenty twenty.
- 24:50Speaker 2: Use yeah, something something.
- 24:55Speaker 3: So that is exciting because it means that Volkswagen had
- 24:58Speaker 3: a service called I think it was carryad.
- 25:01Speaker 2: Basically it was an.
- 25:03Speaker 3: Absolute disaster and it delayed a lot of Volkswagen's roll
- 25:06Speaker 3: out of electric vehicles. And it just has to do
- 25:09Speaker 3: with I listened to a podcast with r. J. Scrima,
- 25:13Speaker 3: who is the CEO of Rivia and the founder, and
- 25:17Speaker 3: you listened to some rivetings, but he was basically saying
- 25:20Speaker 3: that their cars are different because you're plumbing everything through
- 25:25Speaker 3: basically a central computing network, whereas currently with cars you
- 25:29Speaker 3: have situations where you've got countless tens of CPUs that
- 25:34Speaker 3: manage certain things. So he said, basically, if you wanted
- 25:37Speaker 3: to make a change to the way that a driver's
- 25:40Speaker 3: door opens when a driver grabs the handle or beeps
- 25:44Speaker 3: or something like that in a traditional car, you'd basically
- 25:47Speaker 3: have to have the computer that manages the door handle,
- 25:50Speaker 3: the computer that manages the passive unlocked, the computer that
- 25:53Speaker 3: manages the infotament system, the computer that manages the lights
- 25:56Speaker 3: in the audio. You would have to make all of
- 25:58Speaker 3: these changes. And because it's all sourced by third party suppliers.
- 26:03Speaker 3: You basically have a headache to make all this stuff happen,
- 26:07Speaker 3: whereas with Rivian, because it's all controlled by the one
- 26:09Speaker 3: set of code, you're basically just making one change.
- 26:11Speaker 1: Oh far out, that makes more sense, are you right?
- 26:15Speaker 1: It's just in your pants. You're having a bit of
- 26:20Speaker 1: a Biden moment. What's going mom? Mom?
- 26:26Speaker 3: There was one where he was in there speaking and
- 26:28Speaker 3: he goes, mom, so you stand up and she'd been
- 26:32Speaker 3: dead for like ten or fifteen years.
- 26:34Speaker 5: Really, my favorite was he was like, I'm just very
- 26:38Speaker 5: proud to be like the first black vice president, Jesus Christ.
- 26:44Speaker 5: Time to sit in that chair, Time to sit in
- 26:46Speaker 5: the chair man, You've got cognitive decline.
- 26:49Speaker 1: This is you really are worry now.
- 26:51Speaker 3: This is not a political show. But he right at
- 26:54Speaker 3: the end there it was just like what will he
- 26:55Speaker 3: do next?
- 26:56Speaker 2: Like us just a train wreck. But anyway, I loved her.
- 27:00Speaker 1: I was having poo in a box. I don't know why,
- 27:02Speaker 1: but just like poo in a box and.
- 27:03Speaker 2: Just in the last one I wanted to quickly mention
- 27:08Speaker 2: goes just this crazy.
- 27:10Speaker 3: Story we ran on the site the other day. It
- 27:13Speaker 3: was about this Ford Fairlane. It was zed El Fairlane.
- 27:19Speaker 3: It's been left at a shopping center and let me
- 27:21Speaker 3: just triple check with John's so Northcote Plaza down you alway,
- 27:24Speaker 3: for over ten years it's been parked in the car
- 27:27Speaker 3: park in the exact same spot.
- 27:29Speaker 1: Now, is this a proper old like fairlane or is
- 27:31Speaker 1: this a zed.
- 27:32Speaker 3: L was in the eighties, late eighties, and it's been
- 27:37Speaker 3: sitting there for that long, no regio plates, sort of
- 27:39Speaker 3: dusty and all that sort of stuff. Basically, the reason
- 27:43Speaker 3: it's been there was the former owner's son asked for
- 27:48Speaker 3: the car park for the car to be left in
- 27:50Speaker 3: the car park because it belonged to his father. And
- 27:53Speaker 3: the father passed away and he had some sort of
- 27:56Speaker 3: connection to that shopping center.
- 27:58Speaker 1: What and what was he like a janator there or something?
- 28:00Speaker 2: Sure, we worked there.
- 28:02Speaker 3: So basically he passed away more than fifteen years ago
- 28:05Speaker 3: and the car has been there the whole time, and
- 28:07Speaker 3: management have basically come out and said, well, they're going
- 28:09Speaker 3: to let the car stay there. Someone regularly cleans it
- 28:13Speaker 3: and make sure it isn't sort of too damaged.
- 28:15Speaker 1: I did someone in there is like a little tribute.
- 28:17Speaker 2: Something like that.
- 28:18Speaker 1: Yeah, father, Yeah, At the shopping like he loved this
- 28:21Speaker 1: shopping center. Yeah, and I really can't be fucked moving
- 28:24Speaker 1: this car.
- 28:25Speaker 2: I think it's a nice feel good story, is it? Yeah?
- 28:29Speaker 1: So like it's like a little it's like a like
- 28:31Speaker 1: a mureral.
- 28:32Speaker 2: Yeah, something like that.
- 28:33Speaker 1: They put like a little fountain or something around it.
- 28:36Speaker 1: Maybe you can truck something. Coiner there, what happened? Let
- 28:38Speaker 1: me get this right. So they leave the car there
- 28:40Speaker 1: and people come to wash it.
- 28:42Speaker 3: Yeah, someone cleans it, and so they open it up
- 28:45Speaker 3: and it's just the outside, just the inside.
- 28:52Speaker 2: I'm glad you're finally coming around to the concept.
- 28:54Speaker 1: Waste a fucking time. That was my inside voice. I'll
- 28:59Speaker 1: change that. I feel like we're going to go in
- 29:02Speaker 1: another six months, break.
- 29:03Speaker 2: Everybody, if I don't die from whatever I got.
- 29:08Speaker 1: What have you got there? Have you got a bit
- 29:09Speaker 1: of COVID? No, I'm not worried about that.
- 29:11Speaker 2: By the way, not real. So that was a joke, clearly,
- 29:15Speaker 2: So please don't ride in.
- 29:17Speaker 1: I say you're having sex with the COVID bat outside.
- 29:21Speaker 2: A fish or monkey?
- 29:23Speaker 3: No?
- 29:23Speaker 1: No, no, it's definitely a bat. Was this a little
- 29:26Speaker 1: present that your kid brought back from daycare?
- 29:28Speaker 2: Yeah?
- 29:28Speaker 3: Probably got that she goes around just licking things. I'm like, no,
- 29:32Speaker 3: don't do that.
- 29:35Speaker 1: She gets up from her dad, I'll stop.
- 29:39Speaker 4: Does she.
- 29:43Speaker 1: Um? Oh my goodness, speaking of oh my goodness, super
- 29:49Speaker 1: usol terror you pass.
- 29:53Speaker 2: Got to drive that? Yeah, lucky you. A few will
- 29:57Speaker 2: ever drive one.
- 29:58Speaker 1: The cousin of the TOYOTAZ four x b Z four x,
- 30:03Speaker 1: which sounds like a fucking it sounds like a coffee order. Well,
- 30:06Speaker 1: elon Musk's other kid. It's probably the older one, the
- 30:09Speaker 1: older one blowing the long hair. keV stop at.
- 30:13Speaker 2: Gen So Salteria reason. I think it's stupid, okay, And
- 30:18Speaker 2: the Toyota isn't the toy.
- 30:21Speaker 1: Wait can I pause? You really you think you're not
- 30:24Speaker 1: a fan of that, but you're okay with the Toyota.
- 30:27Speaker 2: And I'll tell you why.
- 30:28Speaker 3: With the Toyota, you can go from driving a Cambri
- 30:31Speaker 3: to driving that and everything feels the same. It's got
- 30:33Speaker 3: lots of buttons. It is just Toyota. It is then
- 30:36Speaker 3: backed up by having an Australia wide dealer networks. You
- 30:39Speaker 3: can charge it at any of the dealers and it's
- 30:42Speaker 3: it's easy. It just is easy, right, it makes sense.
- 30:45Speaker 1: I didn't know you could do that.
- 30:46Speaker 3: That's the Subaru. It is like the Toyota, except without
- 30:49Speaker 3: the dealer network and without it being like any other
- 30:52Speaker 3: subar aside from the fact it's all will drive well.
- 30:54Speaker 1: I mean it's their very first EV. I get what
- 30:57Speaker 1: you're saying, like, does it still fit in the realm's?
- 31:00Speaker 2: I just don't get why you would release it in Australia.
- 31:03Speaker 3: So I think in sort of places like California where
- 31:07Speaker 3: it feels good to be driving an EV, fine, whatever
- 31:10Speaker 3: you can get away with it. There's lots of EV's,
- 31:11Speaker 3: lots of charging in Australia where none of that's really developed.
- 31:14Speaker 2: Why would you buy a super U of all EV's.
- 31:18Speaker 2: I just it has.
- 31:19Speaker 1: One feature that the Toyota doesn't have, and it's such
- 31:22Speaker 1: an amazing feature. Do you know what this car can do?
- 31:25Speaker 1: It can if you're like on grass or some sort
- 31:28Speaker 1: of like loose gravel. Maybe you've got like a maybe
- 31:31Speaker 1: you live on acreage with a big driveway. You can
- 31:34Speaker 1: do sort of like a semi off roady cruise control
- 31:38Speaker 1: with it.
- 31:38Speaker 2: And you've got like a bushy landing streep.
- 31:40Speaker 1: Little bushy bush you can just really cruise on the
- 31:43Speaker 1: bush yep and you can't do that in the bee
- 31:46Speaker 1: Z four.
- 31:47Speaker 3: X, yes, because an EV doesn't belong like an EV
- 31:50Speaker 3: like that does not belong anywhere near an.
- 31:52Speaker 2: Off road like a bit of an off road vibe.
- 31:55Speaker 2: It's just putting from the rough really, so to speak.
- 31:58Speaker 1: You're not a fan. I didn't like. I don't. My
- 32:00Speaker 1: feelings aren't as strong as yours. It was okay, it
- 32:02Speaker 1: was like my thing was. It was fine because it
- 32:08Speaker 1: technically did everything it sort of claimed to do. It
- 32:10Speaker 1: was just fine. And I feel like the EV market
- 32:13Speaker 1: is so saturated at the moment with good stuff, Like
- 32:17Speaker 1: whether you like it or not, there's some heavy competition.
- 32:19Speaker 2: It's expensive, why would you buy it?
- 32:21Speaker 1: And well I sort of got confused as to this
- 32:25Speaker 1: is going to be your debut EV and it's fine.
- 32:29Speaker 1: Like I sort of think, if you're going to do this,
- 32:31Speaker 1: you've got to bring your A game on. And I
- 32:33Speaker 1: think Superu have missed the mark on that lately a lot.
- 32:36Speaker 3: But you have a look at Suberu, right, You've got
- 32:38Speaker 3: some of their products are just super ute. Forester is big,
- 32:41Speaker 3: it's got lots of room, the outback is big. It's
- 32:43Speaker 3: sort of you can do light of fighting and all
- 32:45Speaker 3: that sort of stuff. WX is stupid, it's dead. No
- 32:48Speaker 3: one really cares about that anymore. But with the EV,
- 32:51Speaker 3: it just has nothing that is super u about it. Like, yes,
- 32:53Speaker 3: it has all will drive, but big big deal. That's
- 32:55Speaker 3: so easy to do in an EV. It just has
- 32:57Speaker 3: no trademark Subaru stuff.
- 33:00Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 33:00Speaker 1: I think they've tried to carry on the the looks
- 33:03Speaker 1: a little bit, maybe that sort of.
- 33:05Speaker 3: I think what they've done is they've gone, we have
- 33:07Speaker 3: a free platform to work with with Toyota. What is
- 33:10Speaker 3: the least amount of effort we can put into this
- 33:11Speaker 3: to make it a super Oh I know, let's give
- 33:13Speaker 3: it a cruise control for off road that no one
- 33:16Speaker 3: will ever use.
- 33:17Speaker 1: I don't think they're put in the least about of
- 33:19Speaker 1: effort in this car.
- 33:20Speaker 3: I would love to see an EV on the market,
- 33:24Speaker 3: even your Genesis.
- 33:25Speaker 2: Yeah, they made the thing six Oh yeah, they've even
- 33:30Speaker 2: got like the spinny thing in the middle. It looks
- 33:32Speaker 2: different and it's the same platform, but they've gone to effort.
- 33:36Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 33:36Speaker 3: I can't think of any other platform E Tron and
- 33:39Speaker 3: Tykwon they're just different cars. I can't think of any
- 33:41Speaker 3: other platform that less effort has been put into making
- 33:45Speaker 3: it unique.
- 33:46Speaker 1: Mustang marquees. Pretty boring.
- 33:47Speaker 2: No, but that's it's not shared with other Ford stuff.
- 33:50Speaker 2: That's true. It is its own car.
- 33:52Speaker 3: Like I can't think of any other shared platform where
- 33:55Speaker 3: they have just put less effort in.
- 33:57Speaker 1: Hmmm, yeah, actually that's a good point.
- 34:00Speaker 2: There's there's heaps of vs Ye platforms.
- 34:03Speaker 1: Okay, yeah, well look you might have a point, very harsh.
- 34:07Speaker 1: What's wrong? Are you grumpy? You know what I think
- 34:09Speaker 1: it is? You haven't eaten chumps, I haven't haven't eaten
- 34:13Speaker 1: soon in your belly and you need a tummy rub
- 34:17Speaker 1: and you need a bit of a ride in the
- 34:18Speaker 1: genusis hey? Before we wrap this sacker up, tell me
- 34:21Speaker 1: one quick thing. You are looking forward to driving.
- 34:25Speaker 2: I am going on a top secret mission.
- 34:29Speaker 1: Is that why you're wearing a fake mustache?
- 34:31Speaker 2: Correct?
- 34:32Speaker 1: Shades?
