- 0:05Speaker 1: Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to The Right Time, a Wave original.
- 0:09Speaker 1: My name is Beaumont E.
- 0:10Speaker 2: Jones.
- 0:10Speaker 1: Thanks for listening wherever you get your podcasts. Thanks for
- 0:13Speaker 1: watching us on YouTube. Subscribe, like, rate us, review us,
- 0:17Speaker 1: give us five stars. You only give us four stars.
- 0:19Speaker 1: I'm inclined to believe you are a hater. Got a
- 0:22Speaker 1: lot to get to. We are going to talk about
- 0:24Speaker 1: what might be the greatest World Series of all time.
- 0:27Speaker 1: But first, we are coming off another Mahomes-Allen matchup. Chiefs
- 0:31Speaker 1: and Bills. The Bills won. During that game, they threw
- 0:35Speaker 1: a number at me that really was kind of staggering
- 0:38Speaker 1: when it came down to it. They said this is 2020.
- 0:42Speaker 1: That was the 10th matchup between the Bills and the Chiefs,
- 0:46Speaker 1: specifically with Mahomes and Allen at quarterback. The Bills won
- 0:53Speaker 1: this game on Sunday. That is the fifth straight time
- 0:57Speaker 1: that the Bills have beaten the Chiefs in the regular season.
- 0:59Speaker 1: That's what they were saying. Of course, the Chiefs have
- 1:02Speaker 1: won four straight times in the postseason. And Ryan, tell
- 1:07Speaker 1: me if I'm being a little bit too cynical about this,
- 1:10Speaker 1: but once they rattled that statistic off, I all of
- 1:12Speaker 1: a sudden felt like, why am I watching this?
- 1:15Speaker 2: Right.
- 1:15Speaker 1: This doesn't feel like it matters at all.
- 1:17Speaker 2: Right.
- 1:17Speaker 3: I mean, you want, at some point, Josh Allen can't
- 1:22Speaker 3: lose to the Chiefs every single year.
- 1:24Speaker 2: Right.
- 1:25Speaker 3: But when you've seen this play out for the last
- 1:28Speaker 3: five years, it does sort of feel like we're doing
- 1:31Speaker 3: the same thing all over again.
- 1:32Speaker 1: Yeah, I was like, damn, why are we here? You
- 1:34Speaker 1: know what I mean? Like, I really got, you know,
- 1:35Speaker 1: they put it at the four o'clock or whatever. Like,
- 1:38Speaker 1: I don't know why it felt to a degree like
- 1:39Speaker 1: those Manning-Brady games mattered in a way that it did
- 1:43Speaker 1: not feel like this game mattered.
- 1:45Speaker 3: Well, we got a lot more of them. We got
- 1:46Speaker 3: a lot less of them.
- 1:48Speaker 2: Right?
- 1:48Speaker 3: I mean, this is, I think they played 10 times
- 1:51Speaker 3: over the course of their 18 or 20 years they
- 1:54Speaker 3: were in the league together. We've gotten 10 times now since, again, 2020.
- 1:59Speaker 1: Yeah, I think the other difference, the Brady-Manning thing was
- 2:03Speaker 1: also so compelling early because it was a while before
- 2:08Speaker 1: we actually thought that Tom Brady was better than Peyton Manning,
- 2:12Speaker 1: except for the fact that Brady's teams kept winning. Then
- 2:15Speaker 1: we got to a point where Brady seemed to be
- 2:19Speaker 1: Manning's equal, if not superior. And then Manning's performance or
- 2:23Speaker 1: his team's performances relative to the Patriots also started to
- 2:26Speaker 1: pick up. I would say the Brady career is interesting
- 2:29Speaker 1: because when Tom Brady was his best, was probably between
- 2:33Speaker 1: the years 2005 and 2013 when they won zero Super Bowls.
- 2:39Speaker 1: But the Brady-Manning matchup kind of had its ebbs and
- 2:42Speaker 1: flows that are kind of in line with the point
- 2:45Speaker 1: that gets made there is that it's not always about
- 2:47Speaker 1: this one person. But even still, I get hype for
- 2:52Speaker 1: Mahomes Allen because it feels none of these Mahomes has
- 2:56Speaker 1: made none of these games feel important when it comes
- 2:59Speaker 1: against these guys because of what it's been in the
- 3:01Speaker 1: postseason with those dudes. It's the same thing. I feel
- 3:04Speaker 1: like we get a decent number of Mahomes Lamar Jackson matchups. Now, granted, Mahomes,
- 3:11Speaker 1: as I recall, has been pretty thoroughly dominant if quarterback
- 3:14Speaker 1: wins were a statistic, of course. It would be pretty
- 3:17Speaker 1: dominant in that one. But all of it for Mahomes,
- 3:20Speaker 1: it seems like I didn't let on. Like I watched
- 3:22Speaker 1: the way he dapped Josh Allen up after the game.
- 3:25Speaker 1: They seemed to be pretty warm and friendly. And if
- 3:27Speaker 1: I was Mahomes, I'd be warm and friendly with all
- 3:29Speaker 1: these guys too. If I was Josh Allen, man, fuck
- 3:31Speaker 1: that guy. Like, we could never have a dap hug
- 3:35Speaker 1: after a game. How could we ever, at some point,
- 3:38Speaker 1: I got to stop catching these L's that matter. Caught
- 3:41Speaker 1: that L at your own crib. Like, you know, remember
- 3:44Speaker 1: that time that Buffalo lost a game, but everybody treated
- 3:47Speaker 1: Josh Allen like he won it just because they was
- 3:49Speaker 1: ahead with 13 seconds left? Like, somehow, it's all about
- 3:52Speaker 1: the 13 seconds part, and nobody gives Mahomes credit for
- 3:55Speaker 1: walking them down the field with those 13 seconds. Anyway...
- 4:03Speaker 1: We give Josh Allen a heaping helping of credit for
- 4:05Speaker 1: that right there. And I think we still watch these
- 4:08Speaker 1: games in the regular season also. Man, maybe this will
- 4:11Speaker 1: be the time that he overcomes, except it seems that
- 4:13Speaker 1: he always overcomes these. That being said, the Chiefs are
- 4:17Speaker 1: five and four, right? We have developed such a startling
- 4:21Speaker 1: level of respect for them because, of course, part of
- 4:23Speaker 1: this is they got better players or more guys have
- 4:26Speaker 1: come back. You know, since early in the year, this
- 4:29Speaker 1: is not the team that lost those games early. At
- 4:32Speaker 1: that same time, this is still a team that's 5-4.
- 4:38Speaker 1: They're not going to have home field for the playoffs.
- 4:42Speaker 1: As it stands right now, it is going to be
- 4:44Speaker 1: a little bit tough for them to win their division.
- 4:47Speaker 1: We're at the midpoint of the season. They're two games
- 4:51Speaker 1: behind the Broncos. They're a game behind the Chargers. They
- 4:54Speaker 1: have ways to go to get to that point.
- 4:57Speaker 2: Anyway.
- 4:58Speaker 1: The Chiefs go win the AFC as far as I'm concerned, Ryan.
- 5:02Speaker 1: I don't feel like I'm the only person that's there.
- 5:04Speaker 1: Once I realized that them playing a regular season game
- 5:06Speaker 1: against Buffalo doesn't matter, it really was like, why am
- 5:08Speaker 1: I even here? What am I doing?
- 5:10Speaker 3: It's starting to feel a little Patriots-esque and a little Jordan-esque. Yes.
- 5:16Speaker 2: Right.
- 5:17Speaker 3: There's so much goodwill towards Mahomes. And the expectations of Mahomes,
- 5:23Speaker 3: and to be fair, I mean, he's been to, what,
- 5:24Speaker 3: five of the last six Super Bowls?
- 5:25Speaker 2: Yes.
- 5:26Speaker 3: So I think that has a lot to do with it. But,
- 5:28Speaker 3: you know, it is, they feel inevitable in January in
- 5:32Speaker 3: a way that is quite rare.
- 5:35Speaker 1: Except Mike was never the equivalent of five and four,
- 5:38Speaker 1: and I don't have great recollection. Except for that year
- 5:40Speaker 1: that the Chiefs lost on Monday Night Football, or the
- 5:43Speaker 1: Chiefs beat the Patriots on Monday Night Football so bad
- 5:46Speaker 1: that we all thought it was over. And then they
- 5:48Speaker 1: came back and won the Super Bowl that year. That
- 5:51Speaker 1: is maybe the closest thing.
- 5:52Speaker 3: They won three more Super Bowls.
- 5:54Speaker 1: They did after it was over. But think about this.
- 5:59Speaker 1: I don't know if you watched any of the Colts
- 6:02Speaker 1: and the Steelers.
- 6:02Speaker 3: A little bit, yeah.
- 6:03Speaker 1: The Colts are starting to look like bullies. They smack
- 6:07Speaker 1: the piss out of bums. Like, they run straight through bums.
- 6:12Speaker 1: And then when they play good teams, not so much.
- 6:14Speaker 1: I know they got that win over the Broncos, but
- 6:16Speaker 1: isn't that the game with the leverage penalty?
- 6:17Speaker 2: Right.
- 6:18Speaker 3: Yeah, the weight penalty. And that was, you know, I
- 6:20Speaker 3: think that was week two.
- 6:22Speaker 1: Yeah, but a game that looked like they were going
- 6:23Speaker 1: to lose against a team that I think that. I
- 6:25Speaker 1: don't know how good the Broncos are, but I know
- 6:27Speaker 1: they're not bad.
- 6:29Speaker 2: Right. Right.
- 6:29Speaker 1: And that was another game. When Indianapolis plays against good teams,
- 6:32Speaker 1: it doesn't seem to go. The Steelers beat them and
- 6:35Speaker 1: the Steelers are leading that division, but the Steelers don't
- 6:38Speaker 1: feel like they're a good team. The Patriots also have
- 6:41Speaker 1: this tendency of beating up on bums. None of this
- 6:45Speaker 1: indicates that anybody going to get something on the Chiefs. Right.
- 6:49Speaker 1: They still seem like those guys. They still seem like
- 6:53Speaker 1: that team. But you would think that if they were,
- 6:58Speaker 1: this would be a game that they would win. And
- 7:01Speaker 1: this is when you know you definitely start getting yourself
- 7:03Speaker 1: into a space of your own personal level of confirmation bias.
- 7:06Speaker 1: And that's when something like that happens and you just
- 7:08Speaker 1: say to yourself, well, hey, they'll be there when it counts.
- 7:15Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 7:16Speaker 1: It's actually a rather Stugatzian sort of thing. I feel
- 7:19Speaker 1: like that was said in that moment, but like, hey,
- 7:20Speaker 1: don't you worry, guys. They'll be there when it counts.
- 7:24Speaker 1: That's the stage where we are. But tell me one
- 7:26Speaker 1: person that hears that and does not say sincerely to themselves, yeah,
- 7:30Speaker 1: you know, they probably will. That seems like it. Because
- 7:35Speaker 1: I did not, I guess I don't feel like I
- 7:38Speaker 1: came away from that game feeling great about Buffalo, which
- 7:42Speaker 1: I don't think going into it, many of us did.
- 7:45Speaker 1: I think the one place where you could say that
- 7:47Speaker 1: you did come out of that feeling pretty good about
- 7:49Speaker 1: Buffalo is their defense. A touch shaky. Right? A touch shaky.
- 7:57Speaker 1: They didn't look shaky in that game. They didn't get
- 8:00Speaker 1: run upon like they've been getting run upon. Mahomes, I think,
- 8:04Speaker 1: had the lowest completion percentage he's had in God knows when.
- 8:07Speaker 1: All of that. These are the kind of things that
- 8:10Speaker 1: can make you feel good. But to counterpoint, and I
- 8:12Speaker 1: can bet you since you're probably going to hear this,
- 8:15Speaker 1: before my buddy Nick does his TV show, they may
- 8:17Speaker 1: roll down a banner, something about them winning their annual
- 8:20Speaker 1: Super Bowl. which I'll be honest with you, if I
- 8:23Speaker 1: was a Buffalo fan, I think I would find myself
- 8:26Speaker 1: wanting to fight that dude over that one. However, that
- 8:31Speaker 1: seems to be what we got. But nobody else over
- 8:33Speaker 1: there looks good. Denver won a game against the Texans
- 8:39Speaker 1: with a concussed and out of the game C.J. Stroud. Oh, wow. Ryan,
- 8:45Speaker 1: I'm seeing something now that I did not know.
- 8:47Speaker 3: Davis Mills still in the league?
- 8:49Speaker 1: Well, that did happen to me. I saw a drop
- 8:52Speaker 1: back and I heard Davis Mills, except I was mixing
- 8:55Speaker 1: him up with the other one, the one that's a
- 8:57Speaker 1: coach now.
- 8:58Speaker 3: TJ Yates.
- 8:59Speaker 1: No, no, no. Davis Webb.
- 9:00Speaker 3: Davis Webb.
- 9:02Speaker 2: Yes.
- 9:03Speaker 1: The guy that Cliff Kingsbury kept at Texas Tech instead
- 9:07Speaker 1: of Baker Mayfield.
- 9:07Speaker 2: Right.
- 9:10Speaker 1: That did happen.
- 9:10Speaker 3: That did happen.
- 9:11Speaker 1: For those who don't remember. But no, I didn't realize
- 9:14Speaker 1: that the Panthers beat the Packers.
- 9:16Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 9:17Speaker 1: The Packers are the real team. I feel like all
- 9:19Speaker 1: of us want to say is really good that we
- 9:21Speaker 1: all want to love. And they just won't do their part.
- 9:25Speaker 3: And to be fair, I think all of us feel
- 9:27Speaker 3: that way about Jordan Love specifically.
- 9:29Speaker 4: Yes.
- 9:30Speaker 3: It's the team and him. Because when he's dealing, he
- 9:35Speaker 3: looks like one of the best quarterbacks in the NFL.
- 9:37Speaker 3: And then he makes... Some of the worst throws I've
- 9:40Speaker 3: ever seen. Just like, like, like through to the other
- 9:44Speaker 3: side of the end zone where today, where it was
- 9:46Speaker 3: just a Panthers player sitting there. It was just boneheaded plays.
- 9:51Speaker 1: He looks like Favre before Favre got it together.
- 9:55Speaker 2: Right.
- 9:57Speaker 1: And that's going to be, it's going to be interesting
- 9:59Speaker 1: because the Packers, look back fondly on the roller coaster
- 10:02Speaker 1: ride of Brett Favre. But it wasn't always fond. Like
- 10:05Speaker 1: there's that stretch of those three MVPs that I guess
- 10:07Speaker 1: you become kind of like the man incontrovertibly after that.
- 10:12Speaker 1: But otherwise, that was that was a ride. That was
- 10:14Speaker 1: a ride. And then you got Aaron Rodgers, who, if
- 10:18Speaker 1: he actually had a fault in his prime, is that
- 10:21Speaker 1: he was a little too risk averse. Yeah, that was
- 10:26Speaker 1: the thing. And now they've got who we're going to see.
- 10:29Speaker 1: I think that he is going to be gigantic star quarterback.
- 10:34Speaker 1: The thing is, I think the expectations of the Packers
- 10:37Speaker 1: kind of require him to be that superstar quarterback like
- 10:42Speaker 1: right now. And that does not seem to be the case.
- 10:47Speaker 1: Speaking of. Actually, I don't have a segue. I just
- 10:51Speaker 1: want to bring up that America's team, the Detroit Lions,
- 10:54Speaker 1: lost a game to the Minnesota Vikings. And that boy, Flores,
- 11:01Speaker 1: he dialed up a heater for the Lions. They just
- 11:06Speaker 1: simply were not there. They weren't ready. They also really
- 11:09Speaker 1: couldn't do a great job stopping the run. But, man,
- 11:16Speaker 1: I got to tell you. Being invested in a football
- 11:19Speaker 1: team and then you look up and the other team
- 11:22Speaker 1: quarterback don't even look good, but they winning. I don't,
- 11:25Speaker 1: I don't like how that feels. Now, Ryan, you're a
- 11:27Speaker 1: Saints fan. You don't know anything about what that feels
- 11:28Speaker 1: like anymore.
- 11:30Speaker 3: I remember what that used to feel like.
- 11:32Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 11:34Speaker 3: It was a fun, a very, very fun 11, 12 years.
- 11:39Speaker 3: And now it's never happening again.
- 11:41Speaker 2: You did.
- 11:42Speaker 1: Like the thing that people don't understand about the Saints
- 11:44Speaker 1: is without question, the second best quarterback in the history
- 11:46Speaker 1: of the franchise is Aaron Brooks.
- 11:48Speaker 3: Not even close.
- 11:50Speaker 1: It's you guys who don't fully understand that, by the way.
- 11:52Speaker 3: It's not even close. It's not even close. There's no rational... Yeah,
- 11:58Speaker 3: it's not even close.
- 12:01Speaker 1: And they've never taken a quarterback in the first round
- 12:03Speaker 1: since Archie Madden, right?
- 12:04Speaker 2: Right.
- 12:07Speaker 1: How is this possible?
- 12:08Speaker 3: And they're steamrolling to the number one overall pick in
- 12:14Speaker 3: a year that doesn't have a quarterback.
- 12:15Speaker 2: Correct. Correct.
- 12:17Speaker 1: Like what do you– under those circumstances, what do you do?
- 12:20Speaker 3: They'll prop knowing if Loomis is still there, I'm sure
- 12:23Speaker 3: he'll draft an interior offensive lineman.
- 12:26Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 12:26Speaker 1: I feel like Loomis is going to be there forever
- 12:29Speaker 1: by the way.
- 12:30Speaker 3: He's been there I think since 2001.
- 12:31Speaker 2: Yes.
- 12:31Speaker 3: As long as I can remember. He was Chris Greer before–
- 12:38Speaker 3: Chris Greer, who just lost his job.
- 12:40Speaker 2: Yes.
- 12:41Speaker 1: By the way, guys, shout out to the Chicago Bears.
- 12:44Speaker 1: You guys amazingly won a game. I don't. I wasn't
- 12:47Speaker 1: watching the game. I just remember at some point while
- 12:52Speaker 1: Ryan and I are kind of texting, trying to go
- 12:54Speaker 1: figure out what we're going to do for the show.
- 12:56Speaker 1: And he says, we got to get Bears-Bengals in there.
- 12:58Speaker 1: And at that point, I had looked up and the
- 13:01Speaker 1: Bengals were ahead in a crazy finish. And there were
- 13:05Speaker 1: 20-something seconds left. except the Bears actually won this game.
- 13:09Speaker 1: But what is crazy? This is the craziest thing to
- 13:12Speaker 1: happen in the NFL this year. And if I'm wrong,
- 13:15Speaker 1: I'm wrong. You let me know. But it is week
- 13:18Speaker 1: 10 of the NFL season, or maybe it's week nine.
- 13:21Speaker 1: It is week nine. My apologies. It is week nine.
- 13:24Speaker 1: And Joe Flacco threw for 470 yards in an NFL game.
- 13:31Speaker 3: On 10 yards and attempt.
- 13:33Speaker 1: An NFL team this year looked around and said to themselves,
- 13:38Speaker 1: we got to go get Joe Flacco so we could
- 13:40Speaker 1: get better. And they went and got Joe Flacco. And
- 13:45Speaker 1: they got better. This actually happened. Like to the point
- 13:50Speaker 1: where Mike Tomlin was mad that somebody got Joe Flacco.
- 13:54Speaker 3: Then why didn't we think of that?
- 13:55Speaker 2: Yeah, right, right.
- 13:57Speaker 1: All we've got is Aaron Rodgers.
- 13:59Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 13:59Speaker 1: Like, do you think there's a world in which Aaron
- 14:01Speaker 1: Rodgers goes to 470 yards in a game this year?
- 14:03Speaker 1: Because I don't. Like, that game they played against the Colts,
- 14:07Speaker 1: I was watching that. Dude, he just looks like a guy. Like,
- 14:10Speaker 1: every now and then there are Aaron Rodgers moments, and
- 14:12Speaker 1: he has, like, we've been watching Aaron Rodgers now for
- 14:15Speaker 1: nearly 20 years, so we know what it looks like.
- 14:17Speaker 1: to be Aaron Rodgers. He has a very distinct style
- 14:19Speaker 1: of quarterback. But no, there's a real live argument that
- 14:22Speaker 1: Joe Flacco is a better quarterback right now than Aaron Rodgers.
- 14:26Speaker 1: And you know what happens after you say that, Ryan?
- 14:28Speaker 1: You remember what Joe Flacco did come in the league
- 14:30Speaker 1: three years after Aaron Rodgers. That's how old these people are.
- 14:33Speaker 3: It's insane.
- 14:36Speaker 1: What are we still doing here? Don't any of you
- 14:39Speaker 1: guys want to go home and be family men? Some
- 14:42Speaker 1: form of capacity, whatever works. Don't you have something else
- 14:45Speaker 1: that you should be doing? The last thing I want
- 14:47Speaker 1: to point out, the Chargers beat the Titans, and that
- 14:49Speaker 1: is not a good look for the Chargers because it's
- 14:51Speaker 1: one touchdown win over the terrible Titans. But it feels
- 14:55Speaker 1: as though, and maybe I'm the only person who has
- 14:57Speaker 1: done this, I have completely forgotten about slash just stop
- 15:02Speaker 1: thinking about the Chargers for whatever reason. Once we realized
- 15:05Speaker 1: that the Chiefs were going to be okay, I stopped
- 15:08Speaker 1: giving those guys any thought or consideration whatsoever. There's a
- 15:13Speaker 1: good chance they might win their division. I haven't thought
- 15:15Speaker 1: about them in a long time. All right, guys. This
- 15:25Speaker 1: is a rather difficult situation for me with this World Series.
- 15:30Speaker 1: And I hadn't quite... I feel like I had to
- 15:34Speaker 1: sift through some fill-ins. And I didn't imagine that I
- 15:36Speaker 1: was going to have to sift through some fill-ins to
- 15:38Speaker 1: watch the World Series, but I did have to sift
- 15:39Speaker 1: through some fill-ins. And I realized that... So I grew
- 15:43Speaker 1: up as a baseball fan in the era when we
- 15:47Speaker 1: were a proper country and there were two baseball leagues, right?
- 15:50Speaker 1: Because right now we have two baseball conferences. They don't
- 15:53Speaker 1: feel like leagues anymore. They play so many... I mean,
- 15:56Speaker 1: they play so many interleague games that there's basically one
- 16:00Speaker 1: going on at all times um everybody uses the designated
- 16:07Speaker 1: hitter there are two conferences there are not two there
- 16:09Speaker 1: are not two leagues um and so it's interesting like
- 16:12Speaker 1: i played the immaculate grid and for those of you
- 16:14Speaker 1: who don't know what the immaculate grid is it's a
- 16:16Speaker 1: game that you can play every morning and it'll be
- 16:19Speaker 1: different things three by three square with different things on
- 16:21Speaker 1: each axis um and so it'll sometimes be team sometimes
- 16:25Speaker 1: it'll be stats or whatever but what it normally involves
- 16:27Speaker 1: you doing is playing a game where you try to
- 16:29Speaker 1: remember a player that has played for two different teams
- 16:33Speaker 1: so did you somebody who played for the Red Sox
- 16:37Speaker 1: and the Philadelphia Phillies you could go Curt Schilling you
- 16:40Speaker 1: could go Pedro Martinez you know that's how the game
- 16:42Speaker 1: goes or whatever and I find that it can be
- 16:44Speaker 1: really really tricky for me if you ask me to
- 16:46Speaker 1: do this with American League teams because I was a
- 16:48Speaker 1: National League fan and so I never actually paid any
- 16:52Speaker 1: attention to the American League so anyway I had to
- 16:55Speaker 1: try to figure out why exactly it was that I
- 16:57Speaker 1: had this great level of reservation and rooting for the
- 17:01Speaker 1: Blue Jays in the course of this World Series, right?
- 17:06Speaker 1: And I thought about maybe, maybe, maybe there's a little
- 17:09Speaker 1: Joel Anderson in us all. And what I mean by
- 17:11Speaker 1: that is I noticed that when the Blue Jays are
- 17:14Speaker 1: playing against the Mariners, for those of you who don't know,
- 17:16Speaker 1: the Mariners are the only team in baseball that has
- 17:19Speaker 1: never been to the World Series. Even the Rays, even
- 17:23Speaker 1: the Rockies, even the Diamondbacks, all of them, they've all
- 17:26Speaker 1: been to a World Series. Every team has been there
- 17:29Speaker 1: except for the Mariners. And honestly, I found myself hoping
- 17:32Speaker 1: that the Blue Jays would beat the Mariners in the
- 17:34Speaker 1: league championship series just to keep that factoid on the board.
- 17:39Speaker 1: That was it. Like you realize there's a handful of
- 17:42Speaker 1: teams that have never been to a Super Bowl. OK, handful.
- 17:47Speaker 1: I root for one of them. Right. It's a lot
- 17:49Speaker 1: more of them. Only one team that never been to
- 17:52Speaker 1: the World Series. And I kind of wanted to still
- 17:54Speaker 1: have a team that had never been there. I don't know.
- 17:56Speaker 1: It just kind of helped or whatever.
- 17:57Speaker 5: So.
- 17:58Speaker 1: The Blue Jays had not won a World Series since 1993.
- 18:01Speaker 1: And I was like, well, maybe the difficulty I'm having
- 18:03Speaker 1: rooting for them in this World Series is because they
- 18:05Speaker 1: haven't won a World Series since 1993. And I want
- 18:08Speaker 1: to preserve that factoid because I've hated the Dodgers my
- 18:11Speaker 1: whole life. And then I realized, no, that wasn't the
- 18:14Speaker 1: problem at all. The problem wasn't about 1993. The whole
- 18:17Speaker 1: problem was about 1992. And for those of you who
- 18:21Speaker 1: don't know, about 1992 that is when the Atlanta Braves
- 18:26Speaker 1: um two seasons off fresh off of two seasons prior
- 18:30Speaker 1: where they had finished in last place and they had
- 18:32Speaker 1: finished in last place for four times in five years
- 18:34Speaker 1: because for starting one of the most underappreciated runs in
- 18:37Speaker 1: team sports history anyway they played a world series against
- 18:41Speaker 1: the Toronto Blue Jays and they lost that world series
- 18:44Speaker 1: in six games on their home field Canada was out
- 18:47Speaker 1: here acting bad in front of us And then I
- 18:50Speaker 1: remembered why I couldn't get down with that. A friend
- 18:53Speaker 1: of mine sent me some video from the little watch
- 18:56Speaker 1: party they had for game six at the Scotiabank Arena.
- 19:01Speaker 1: That's where the Raptors play their games. And I saw
- 19:05Speaker 1: them sitting in there. And then she told me how
- 19:07Speaker 1: sad they was when they lost. And I was kind
- 19:09Speaker 1: of like, that's what you get. And you know what?
- 19:10Speaker 1: That wasn't even fair. You know what I mean? They
- 19:12Speaker 1: didn't deserve. They didn't deserve. That's what you get from me.
- 19:16Speaker 1: I would say, though, that a watch party for game six,
- 19:22Speaker 1: kind of sort of feels like Chance and the Fates. Anyway,
- 19:25Speaker 1: it got us to a game seven. And by the
- 19:30Speaker 1: time the game seven had come around, I was squarely
- 19:33Speaker 1: rooting for the Blue Jays. And I mean, it really
- 19:35Speaker 1: came down to it. I've hated the Dodgers since I
- 19:38Speaker 1: was seven. I only had some beef with the Blue
- 19:42Speaker 1: Jays for a week or two, 30 years ago, right?
- 19:46Speaker 1: Squarely in the Blue Jays zone. Um, but I have
- 19:49Speaker 1: to say, time, I'm also squarely in the Ohtani zone, right?
- 19:53Speaker 1: I just wanted to see Ohtani do amazing things. It
- 19:57Speaker 1: was very clear. I think Otani got on in the first.
- 20:00Speaker 1: He was the leadoff batter, right? And he was also
- 20:02Speaker 1: the starting pitcher in Game 7. Let's stop and take
- 20:04Speaker 1: a moment to appreciate the fact that Mr. 50-50 started
- 20:07Speaker 1: Game 7 of the World Series. Now, it was not
- 20:10Speaker 1: long after he started Game 7 of the World Series
- 20:13Speaker 1: that it was clear that somebody else needed to be
- 20:15Speaker 1: pitching in the World Series because they was out here.
- 20:18Speaker 1: They was making contact off your mans. And in the
- 20:21Speaker 1: second inning, I forget who I was texting with, but
- 20:23Speaker 1: I was like, oh, I was texting with Homie Tinsley.
- 20:26Speaker 1: I was like, yeah, man. They can't throw him back
- 20:28Speaker 1: out there in the third. That's the one thing I
- 20:30Speaker 1: know they cannot do is throw him back out there
- 20:32Speaker 1: in the third. And what is the one thing that
- 20:34Speaker 1: they did? They threw him back out there in the third,
- 20:38Speaker 1: and it went bad. Three-run homer. Had to get him
- 20:42Speaker 1: out of there, right? So as this game is going,
- 20:45Speaker 1: and it is cracking in there. I could not... You don't,
- 20:51Speaker 1: at least I don't, think of baseball as a sport
- 20:53Speaker 1: where you think about how loud the crowd is. That
- 20:57Speaker 1: felt like as loud a crowd as I could remember. Like,
- 21:01Speaker 1: it felt like a college basketball loud crowd. You know
- 21:06Speaker 1: what I mean? Like, it was just, I couldn't believe
- 21:07Speaker 1: how cracking it was in there.
- 21:09Speaker 3: It was loud, and it was like a Duke loud.
- 21:12Speaker 3: It was like on top of you.
- 21:14Speaker 2: Yes.
- 21:15Speaker 5: Yes.
- 21:15Speaker 3: Not like a, like a, there was like a difference
- 21:18Speaker 3: in like the college football crowd. sort of, you know, like,
- 21:21Speaker 3: it's almost cavernous in a way, because you've got the
- 21:24Speaker 3: open-air stadium, but in college baseball, they play basketball, excuse me,
- 21:28Speaker 3: and it's just loud, and they're intense, and it's just
- 21:33Speaker 3: every single out and at bat was so intense, and
- 21:39Speaker 3: I think the college basketball comp's a good one.
- 21:41Speaker 1: Yeah, like, I mean, it was nuts, but then it
- 21:43Speaker 1: was a baseball game, and baseball, a friend of mine
- 21:46Speaker 1: brings this up every time, like, he doesn't watch baseball
- 21:49Speaker 1: like that, I'm sure he's listening to this, And we
- 21:51Speaker 1: talk about this all the time that baseball is such
- 21:54Speaker 1: a perfectly designed and imagined game. But when you think
- 21:59Speaker 1: about it, baseball, it has like built in a rock
- 22:05Speaker 1: and jock in it.
- 22:06Speaker 2: Right.
- 22:07Speaker 1: Like when you don't think about it that much. But
- 22:09Speaker 1: the truth is, like basketball doesn't have a six or
- 22:13Speaker 1: an eight point shot. Baseball has one of those, right? Like,
- 22:19Speaker 1: that's what the multi-run home run is that. It's got
- 22:23Speaker 1: that built in. Like, force plays, the idea behind a
- 22:27Speaker 1: force play and everything that evolves around that. It is
- 22:30Speaker 1: amazing that the structure of this game has held up
- 22:32Speaker 1: the way it has for so long because it's just
- 22:34Speaker 1: so goddamn perfect. And it leads to such moments of
- 22:38Speaker 1: not just great suspense, but the ability for everything to
- 22:42Speaker 1: change all at one time and the ability for a
- 22:46Speaker 1: person who should not be doing something to flip things
- 22:49Speaker 1: up to actually do it. You don't really get that
- 22:52Speaker 1: many examples in the other sports of somebody who's not
- 22:57Speaker 1: supposed to be the guy to get it done actually
- 23:00Speaker 1: being the guy to get it done, right? There are
- 23:03Speaker 1: not a whole lot of Bucky Dent's in.
- 23:08Speaker 1: In the other sports, for example, part of that, of course,
- 23:11Speaker 1: is nine guys in a lineup. They're not all there
- 23:13Speaker 1: to do the exact same thing. So, you know, all
- 23:16Speaker 1: of that.
- 23:16Speaker 2: Right.
- 23:17Speaker 1: But there aren't that many guys who aren't supposed to
- 23:22Speaker 1: be that dude who wind up being that dude. Also,
- 23:25Speaker 1: baseball has something that the other sports don't really have,
- 23:28Speaker 1: which is the slump. There aren't that many guys that
- 23:32Speaker 1: wind up in situations where they're like, hey, what's going on? Hey, man,
- 23:34Speaker 1: I've been dog shit for like a month now. Yeah,
- 23:37Speaker 1: I know. It's crazy, right? Yeah, just been dog shit
- 23:40Speaker 1: for a month. That doesn't happen. So how many other
- 23:42Speaker 1: sports are there where you have a situation where somebody
- 23:44Speaker 1: has been terrible for a month? Terrible for a month
- 23:48Speaker 1: has the ability to change everything, right? So who's been
- 23:50Speaker 1: terrible for a month? This cat named Miguel Rojas was
- 23:53Speaker 1: at the plate. I'm going to be honest with you, man.
- 23:55Speaker 1: I ain't never really heard of that dude until this
- 23:57Speaker 1: series got started. Sorry, I'll be there every day. But
- 24:00Speaker 1: as he's coming up, and no, he's barely played recently
- 24:04Speaker 1: because his bat has been so non-existent. And what I
- 24:08Speaker 1: was thinking about is the whole way the broadcast kept
- 24:11Speaker 1: trying to talk about whether or not Otani was going
- 24:14Speaker 1: to get another at-bat. right? Is Otani going to get
- 24:19Speaker 1: back to the plate? Is Otani going to get back
- 24:21Speaker 1: to the plate? And then finally he had enough of
- 24:23Speaker 1: a chance. Somebody had gotten a hit that was like, okay,
- 24:26Speaker 1: we're going to get Otani to the plate. That is
- 24:30Speaker 1: going to happen. And then I thought about it and
- 24:34Speaker 1: I felt like it was a terrible.
- 24:36Speaker 6: Setup for our mans because the way it was shaping up,
- 24:42Speaker 6: Otani could get to the plate and at once not
- 24:47Speaker 6: only make the last out in the World Series, but
- 24:51Speaker 6: the way it was shaping.
- 24:52Speaker 1: Up, Ryan, he would have also been the losing pitcher.
- 24:56Speaker 1: And I know how we are. We would have given
- 24:58Speaker 1: him no grace for this. Because quietly, did he have
- 25:04Speaker 1: a great postseason or an okay postseason with some great games?
- 25:07Speaker 2: Right.
- 25:09Speaker 3: That's the kind of questions you start asking.
- 25:11Speaker 1: Yeah, but that's, I mean, it was a fair question
- 25:13Speaker 1: to ask. No matter what, this dude Rojas had, I
- 25:17Speaker 1: mentioned Bucky Dent. There's Ozzie Smith with the home run
- 25:20Speaker 1: in 1985. You can go through and get a few
- 25:23Speaker 1: other people. This guy who's hitting in the nine hole
- 25:27Speaker 1: hits the home run that ties the game. And I
- 25:31Speaker 1: am personally so glad that I don't root for the
- 25:33Speaker 1: Toronto Blue Jays because I saw everything or heard everything change.
- 25:38Speaker 1: right in that moment the next batter was Otani and
- 25:42Speaker 1: he hit what would have been the third out that
- 25:44Speaker 1: would have ended the game if Rojas had or it
- 25:46Speaker 1: may not end the game but no actually not it
- 25:48Speaker 1: would end the game it would have been it he
- 25:51Speaker 1: just hit a fly ball to left field my buddy
- 25:55Speaker 1: Nick made the point that he can't think of any
- 25:58Speaker 1: team that's ever come closer to winning a world series
- 26:01Speaker 1: that did not win the world series. And I got
- 26:03Speaker 1: to thinking about that. It made me think about 2002
- 26:07Speaker 1: when Dusty Baker makes the pitching change and lets the
- 26:10Speaker 1: pitcher keep the ball that my buddy Kirk will never
- 26:16Speaker 1: forget as we watched that game together. And he is
- 26:17Speaker 1: a giants fan. And up to that point, the giants
- 26:19Speaker 1: had never won a world series in San Francisco and
- 26:21Speaker 1: they chanced the fates and the angels wound up winning
- 26:24Speaker 1: that game. Um, The 1991 Atlanta Braves, though I guess
- 26:30Speaker 1: they were only but so close. It was 3-2 after
- 26:34Speaker 1: game five. They went back to Minnesota. And Jack Morris
- 26:37Speaker 1: threw 10 shutout innings. I mean, what can you do, right?
- 26:44Speaker 1: What can you do? 2001, the Yankees. It felt like,
- 26:48Speaker 1: I mean, game seven, you're up. And Mariano Rivera comes
- 26:52Speaker 1: in the game. I think that's as close as any
- 26:54Speaker 1: team was ever going to be thinking they won the game.
- 26:56Speaker 1: But the game was on the road. This was at
- 26:59Speaker 1: the crib. And it felt like they'd owned that game.
- 27:03Speaker 1: And credit to the Dodgers for just keeping on chopping wood, right?
- 27:07Speaker 1: Because it's not like they swung this on a grand slam.
- 27:10Speaker 1: Little by little, just kept coming back a little more,
- 27:14Speaker 1: a little more. And this is why you can't stop
- 27:17Speaker 1: scoring runs. There was that three-run homer in the third.
- 27:19Speaker 1: They scored one more in the sixth, and then they
- 27:21Speaker 1: did not score again. That game, by the way, had
- 27:24Speaker 1: 25 combined hits in 11 innings. 25 hits. That's the
- 27:29Speaker 1: other part that can make baseball so interesting is that
- 27:32Speaker 1: it feels like everybody should have had a lot more
- 27:34Speaker 1: runs after all those hits that we saw, but you
- 27:37Speaker 1: couldn't necessarily string it together. Then we get to the
- 27:41Speaker 1: postseason baseball thing. So what we got now is coming
- 27:44Speaker 1: out of the pen is not these guys that ain't
- 27:46Speaker 1: good enough to be starters. It's these starters that are
- 27:48Speaker 1: too tired to pitch a whole game, but they just
- 27:51Speaker 1: coming out there. Like it's like every time somebody goes
- 27:53Speaker 1: to the bullpen, it's like, damn, you just you've drawn
- 27:55Speaker 1: another face card, huh? Like, damn, we just drawn another
- 27:58Speaker 1: ace until you get down to Yamamoto, who threw 100
- 28:01Speaker 1: pitches the game before. And he's the one that's got
- 28:04Speaker 1: to shut this down.
- 28:05Speaker 2: Right.
- 28:05Speaker 1: I don't know, Ryan, if you saw that clip, but
- 28:07Speaker 1: right before he faces Vlad Guerrero, where he gives him
- 28:10Speaker 1: a tip of the hat and then it's like, yeah,
- 28:13Speaker 1: he's like, shit.
- 28:14Speaker 2: Yeah. Yeah. Yeah.
- 28:17Speaker 1: I saw a few moments with pitchers where you could
- 28:18Speaker 1: see it on their face. Like after it was done,
- 28:20Speaker 1: like the Bassett dude, I think, for Toronto got to
- 28:22Speaker 1: the end of one of those innings. And I've never
- 28:24Speaker 1: seen this more clearly. Or maybe I'm older and I
- 28:26Speaker 1: watch games differently. Like I'm reading emotions a little differently.
- 28:29Speaker 3: No, you could see the weight on every single pitcher's face.
- 28:33Speaker 1: Yeah, as soon as they walked off the mound, just like, oh. Man,
- 28:36Speaker 1: because I remember, like when I played baseball in Little League,
- 28:38Speaker 1: and I was never going to be like no big
- 28:39Speaker 1: league player, but I was like, you know, baseball was
- 28:42Speaker 1: my thing, right? And I remembered like I was a
- 28:45Speaker 1: decent pitcher for the levels that I played at. And
- 28:48Speaker 1: I remembered how much I loved if you were rolling
- 28:52Speaker 1: and you were standing out there and it was all
- 28:54Speaker 1: you and you were in total control of everything. Because
- 28:57Speaker 1: I always talk about this, that baseball is like such a.
- 29:00Speaker 1: great smart kid game right you you know if you
- 29:02Speaker 1: had just taken the time to figure out everything else
- 29:04Speaker 1: your peers probably had.
- 29:06Speaker 3: Not you got you have all these little situations that
- 29:08Speaker 3: can only come up at certain times.
- 29:10Speaker 1: Yes and if you watch baseball every day like i
- 29:13Speaker 1: did you knew them all right and the other kids
- 29:16Speaker 1: not so much right like you know how to play
- 29:18Speaker 1: the other thing about baseball especially as a pitcher was
- 29:20Speaker 1: everybody got short arms so they all had to stand
- 29:23Speaker 1: real close to the plate And all you had to
- 29:25Speaker 1: do with a little bit of control is keep hitting
- 29:28Speaker 1: them with inside heat.
- 29:30Speaker 2: Right.
- 29:30Speaker 1: Inside heat was unstoppable. But I remember how it felt.
- 29:33Speaker 1: But I also remember every now and then you get
- 29:36Speaker 1: your shit rocked and nothing ever felt more solitary.
- 29:40Speaker 2: And more lonely.
- 29:42Speaker 1: And you the one that's got to pull it together.
- 29:45Speaker 1: It's the closest thing to being an individual performer in
- 29:48Speaker 1: team sports. It's both sides of that. Being the batter
- 29:51Speaker 1: and being the pitcher. It's me and you. And we're
- 29:54Speaker 1: doing this for everybody. And I remember how it would feel, man,
- 29:59Speaker 1: when somebody tagged you and you just out there by yourself. Like,
- 30:02Speaker 1: as much as I like to joke and we all
- 30:04Speaker 1: do about the unwritten rules and it's like, well, if
- 30:06Speaker 1: you don't like it, you need to just stop them
- 30:08Speaker 1: from hitting the hook. Well, look, sometimes it don't work
- 30:10Speaker 1: that way. All right? Like, gang recognize gang. Just hurry
- 30:13Speaker 1: up so we can get this thing to going, man. Like,
- 30:15Speaker 1: I get it because of the solitary nature of it.
- 30:18Speaker 1: And never before had I recalled just watching the weight
- 30:22Speaker 1: on everybody's faces. in every single moment. It was so
- 30:27Speaker 1: intense and it was so incredible. It felt as close
- 30:33Speaker 1: to like, the older I get, playoff baseball starts feeling
- 30:36Speaker 1: like playoff hockey, where anything could be like, oh man,
- 30:39Speaker 1: everything swung. Or like soccer is like, oh my God,
- 30:41Speaker 1: it was just going this one direction. And then everything
- 30:43Speaker 1: swung the other way right then. It was so incredible
- 30:46Speaker 1: and so amazing to watch that on Saturday. In a way,
- 30:49Speaker 1: it like hit me in such a cool way, like damn.
- 30:52Speaker 1: This is what it used to feel like all the time. Like,
- 30:55Speaker 1: I don't know what happened. I just fell off from baseball.
- 30:58Speaker 1: But every time, it's not like I go, like, people
- 31:00Speaker 1: are like, man, baseball is boring. Hell no. Baseball is
- 31:01Speaker 1: not boring. They just play a bunch of games. But
- 31:04Speaker 1: that right there, what you saw on Saturday, I can't
- 31:08Speaker 1: think of anything that was messing with that. Man, that
- 31:11Speaker 1: was fun.
- 31:17Speaker 3: All right, Bo, let's get to some stories from the weekend.
- 31:19Speaker 3: It's another Monday, so another coach has been bought out
- 31:22Speaker 3: for eight-plus figures. Auburn fired Hugh Freeze after going 6-16
- 31:27Speaker 3: in SEC play. He will be receiving a $ 15. 4 million buyout. Bo,
- 31:34Speaker 3: your thoughts?
- 31:35Speaker 1: Yo, so the real problem with this stuff with college
- 31:37Speaker 1: sports is the people got too much of a voice.
- 31:41Speaker 1: And this is what I mean by that. Rob, I
- 31:42Speaker 1: want you to stay with me here. You tell me
- 31:43Speaker 1: if you understand the point that I'm making here. Once
- 31:47Speaker 1: the word gets out that we're going to fire your
- 31:50Speaker 1: coach or the coach should be fired or it feels
- 31:53Speaker 1: like he's going to get fired, it basically becomes a
- 31:55Speaker 1: self-fulfilling prophecy in large part because of the effect it
- 31:58Speaker 1: then has on what's more important than anything else, the
- 32:01Speaker 1: getting players thing.
- 32:03Speaker 2: Right.
- 32:04Speaker 1: Now, maybe that's a little different now because it's a
- 32:06Speaker 1: little bit more about money and the player mobility is
- 32:09Speaker 1: a bit greater. But if everybody says you're going to
- 32:12Speaker 1: fire your coach, you wind up having to fire your coach.
- 32:16Speaker 2: Now.
- 32:17Speaker 1: Yes.
- 32:17Speaker 2: Right.
- 32:18Speaker 1: Especially with early signing day. We got to hurry up
- 32:20Speaker 1: and we got to make decisions and we got to
- 32:21Speaker 1: do this or whatever. And so you wind up in
- 32:23Speaker 1: this place like Auburn, where it feels like if you're
- 32:25Speaker 1: not going to fire him now, you're going to fire
- 32:27Speaker 1: him later. So basically, you go ahead and you have
- 32:29Speaker 1: to make the move. But who is Auburn going to
- 32:31Speaker 1: hire in a year where LSU is open? Penn State
- 32:35Speaker 1: is open. Who else? Florida is open.
- 32:40Speaker 3: That's the ones we definitely know.
- 32:42Speaker 1: Those are the ones we definitely know. Like, and truthfully,
- 32:45Speaker 1: Auburn is not that much a better job than Virginia Tech.
- 32:49Speaker 1: It's better in the sense that you probably get more money, right?
- 32:52Speaker 1: The ceiling of what you can do at Auburn, at
- 32:54Speaker 1: least it used to be a bit higher, but put
- 32:57Speaker 1: the expectations of it on the other side. And I mean,
- 33:00Speaker 1: that's a tricky, tricky job. You'll never be, your top
- 33:04Speaker 1: rivals are Georgia and Alabama. And you have to play
- 33:07Speaker 1: them every year. Yeah, you play them every year and
- 33:09Speaker 1: you'll never be consistently as good as them. Unless they're
- 33:12Speaker 1: fucking up somehow. That's the only way you're there. So, okay.
- 33:16Speaker 1: So Auburn's going to fire Hugh Freeze. The likelihood that
- 33:19Speaker 1: they get a better coach than Hugh Freeze... Not that high. So, like,
- 33:23Speaker 1: I understand why it is that you decide you've got
- 33:26Speaker 1: to fire James Franklin. It's been however many years, right?
- 33:29Speaker 1: You know, I get why these decisions get made. But
- 33:32Speaker 1: at some point, there aren't enough good coaches to go
- 33:34Speaker 1: around and somebody has to look and say to themselves, hey, guys,
- 33:37Speaker 1: maybe we should wait till next year. But no, no, no, no, no.
- 33:41Speaker 1: That's not what's going on here. So, no, everybody's going
- 33:43Speaker 1: to be out here and they're spending these buyouts. And
- 33:46Speaker 1: I've been thinking about this with your guys, with LSU
- 33:48Speaker 1: and what's going on with Woodward And the hell that
- 33:50Speaker 1: he gets because Brian Kelly has this giant buyout. And
- 33:55Speaker 1: it was bad business of Woodward to give him the buyout.
- 33:57Speaker 1: They're also blaming him for the Jimbo buyout, which isn't
- 33:59Speaker 1: entirely his fault.
- 34:00Speaker 3: Yeah, it was like a little bit of Ross Bjork.
- 34:02Speaker 1: Yeah, Bjork extended him. That's how you wound up there.
- 34:05Speaker 1: But the truth is, that was what the market became
- 34:08Speaker 1: on these guys, is these giant buyouts. Woodward at least
- 34:12Speaker 1: learned his lesson because it wasn't a lump sum buyout. Right.
- 34:16Speaker 1: Like it wound up being with Fisher. But the point
- 34:19Speaker 1: of these buyouts is to stop you from firing coaches.
- 34:23Speaker 1: Like the point of the buyout is everybody basically saying,
- 34:27Speaker 1: so we're in this for a while, right?
- 34:29Speaker 2: Right.
- 34:30Speaker 1: Okay, cool. Let's go. We're in this for a while.
- 34:33Speaker 1: But nobody can be in it for a while anymore. Like,
- 34:38Speaker 1: the buyout is supposed to make you get some sense
- 34:39Speaker 1: about yourself. Instead, y'all just pass the hat. Pass the hat.
- 34:44Speaker 1: See what'll happen. And Auburn, which really didn't want to
- 34:47Speaker 1: make this move because they've been looking for coaches. Okay,
- 34:49Speaker 1: after they got rid of Malzahn. By the way, have
- 34:51Speaker 1: not been able to get a coach as good as
- 34:53Speaker 1: Malzahn since they got rid of Malzahn.
- 34:56Speaker 2: But.
- 34:58Speaker 1: You can't do this every year, but you know what
- 34:59Speaker 1: else you can't do every year? Lose four games in
- 35:02Speaker 1: a row. So what all is everybody supposed to do?
- 35:07Speaker 1: I don't know. But if I'm any other school, we're
- 35:10Speaker 1: not firing. If we're anywhere near this class of people,
- 35:14Speaker 1: we're not firing our guy. There's nobody left for us
- 35:19Speaker 1: to go get. Jimmy Sexton only has so many names
- 35:22Speaker 1: to refer us to. Trace Armstrong only knows so many people.
- 35:27Speaker 3: Right. I mean, yeah, at some point, like, we've talked
- 35:29Speaker 3: about this a little bit with the LSU thing. Like,
- 35:31Speaker 3: at some point, you're going to be hiring the seventh
- 35:35Speaker 3: or eighth best candidate.
- 35:36Speaker 1: Well, I mean, I know who LSU needs to hire.
- 35:40Speaker 1: It's a no-brainer decision for me right now. You don't
- 35:44Speaker 1: need a forever hire. You just need your team to
- 35:48Speaker 1: play a little tougher, right? Be a little stronger at
- 35:51Speaker 1: the line of scrimmage. You need somebody with a proven
- 35:55Speaker 1: track record, perhaps. And you need somebody that'll make the
- 35:59Speaker 1: locals feel good.
- 36:00Speaker 3: Don't do it. Don't do it. I know it's rude.
- 36:04Speaker 1: Who am I thinking about?
- 36:06Speaker 3: Do it. Use the voice.
- 36:08Speaker 2: Do it.
- 36:10Speaker 1: I want to come back to help LSU get back
- 36:14Speaker 1: on track. Go Tigers. He ain't got to stay long.
- 36:18Speaker 1: If you tell him, Ed, we just need you to
- 36:19Speaker 1: get this back off the ground, baby. Two, three years. I.
- 36:23Speaker 3: I, if whoever they do bring back, I promise you
- 36:27Speaker 3: they will find a job for it. Or if they
- 36:30Speaker 3: have any sense about it, Ed Orgeron will be involved.
- 36:34Speaker 2: Amen.
- 36:35Speaker 1: Ed Ogeron had practice like the boys club. Ed Ogeron
- 36:39Speaker 1: had the.
- 36:40Speaker 6: Wayward sons of them single mothers out there participating in drills.
- 36:44Speaker 1: Ed Ogeron was trying to get back to the community
- 36:46Speaker 1: and y'all fined him for that. I'm telling you right now,
- 36:49Speaker 1: three years of Ed Ogeron, you might win another national championship.
- 36:52Speaker 1: He couldn't stay, but it didn't mean he can't do it.
- 36:58Speaker 3: It's very amazing that That has become more widely known
- 37:03Speaker 3: and more publicized than when he was at the head
- 37:06Speaker 3: coach bowl miss and took off his shirt and tried
- 37:09Speaker 3: to fight everyone in the locker room.
- 37:10Speaker 1: In the first meeting with the team. Look, I saw
- 37:14Speaker 1: something on the internet where Ed Ogeron said that when
- 37:17Speaker 1: he was at USC, he was recruiting Adrian Peterson. And
- 37:21Speaker 1: a big part of why Adrian Peterson wanted to go.
- 37:23Speaker 3: That was his white whale.
- 37:24Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 37:25Speaker 1: Wanted to go to OU. was because his dad was
- 37:27Speaker 1: still in the Bing and he could watch the OU
- 37:30Speaker 1: games from jail, but he couldn't watch USC games. And
- 37:33Speaker 1: Ed Ogeron, hand to God, said that he tried to
- 37:37Speaker 1: find a way to get Adrian Peterson's dad transferred to
- 37:42Speaker 1: a jail in California. I don't think jail works like that.
- 37:48Speaker 1: But the fact that tells me a lot about the
- 37:50Speaker 1: things that Ed Ogeron has made happen in his day.
- 37:54Speaker 1: that he thought that.
- 37:55Speaker 3: You can say Ed Orgeron doesn't sound intelligent. You cannot
- 37:58Speaker 3: say that he's not resourceful.
- 37:59Speaker 1: No, no, no, no. Here's what he... I think that's
- 38:02Speaker 1: the best way to put it about Orgeron. I don't
- 38:04Speaker 1: think Orgeron is unintelligent at all. I have no reason
- 38:06Speaker 1: to believe that, but you're right. He is crafty.
- 38:09Speaker 2: Yeah, he is.
- 38:09Speaker 1: I definitely know.
- 38:10Speaker 3: He is, if there's a will, there's a way, personified.
- 38:13Speaker 1: Yes, yes. Hold on, don't give up so fast.
- 38:16Speaker 3: Try harder.
- 38:17Speaker 1: Go Tigers.
- 38:20Speaker 3: All right, let's shift to music. For the first time
- 38:23Speaker 3: in nearly... 40 years, there were no rap songs in
- 38:26Speaker 3: the Billboard Hot 100. Obviously, this is the pop charts
- 38:30Speaker 3: that are, you know, to kind of define music over
- 38:33Speaker 3: the last 60 or so years. Bo, what was your
- 38:36Speaker 3: reaction to this?
- 38:37Speaker 1: Look, man, there was a time, this is almost about
- 38:40Speaker 1: 20 years ago, there was a week where every song
- 38:43Speaker 1: in the top 10 had a rap verse.
- 38:46Speaker 7: Right?
- 38:47Speaker 1: I don't know exactly what it means, though, because I
- 38:48Speaker 1: don't fully understand how the charts work.
- 38:51Speaker 3: Yeah, right. With streaming versus radio, I don't really understand it.
- 38:56Speaker 1: And TikTok can come in there and interfere. But my
- 39:00Speaker 1: question about that is, so what are white folks doing?
- 39:02Speaker 1: Because that's what this chart is about, by and large,
- 39:04Speaker 1: has historically been. The Hot 100 is what white folks
- 39:06Speaker 1: are listening to. That's what you cross over into. It's
- 39:09Speaker 1: like Hot 100, Top 40, all of this stuff. So
- 39:11Speaker 1: what are people listening to if it's not rap? Because
- 39:14Speaker 1: it's not as though we got like some new form
- 39:17Speaker 1: of music that's come around. What is the thing or
- 39:21Speaker 1: does any of it actually matter anymore? That's the part
- 39:25Speaker 1: that struck me when I heard this was just kind
- 39:27Speaker 1: of like, yeah, does any of it matter anymore? Do
- 39:30Speaker 1: any of these devices that we use to measure this stuff,
- 39:33Speaker 1: how much of it actually matters in the year 2025?
- 39:37Speaker 1: Because I look up and a Taylor Swift song is
- 39:40Speaker 1: number one. Oh, all these Taylor Swift songs, because now
- 39:44Speaker 1: what can happen with streaming is somebody puts out an
- 39:46Speaker 1: album and you just listen to all the songs on
- 39:47Speaker 1: the album and now you got the whole top 10.
- 39:50Speaker 1: I will say this, though. Man, this Leon Thomas guy,
- 39:53Speaker 1: I have heard of him, right? He black. Otherwise, boy,
- 39:58Speaker 1: it's super white in here. Good gracious. I'm looking at
- 40:01Speaker 1: the top 10. My goodness. That Morgan Wallen guy, he's persistent.
- 40:07Speaker 3: Yeah. Talk about someone who I just do not understand,
- 40:11Speaker 3: but seems to, you know, score a lot of points,
- 40:15Speaker 3: if you will.
- 40:16Speaker 1: Yeah, but brother, the top 30 is just a bunch
- 40:18Speaker 1: of Taylor Swift songs, basically.
- 40:20Speaker 3: It's just people listening to Taylor Swift over and over
- 40:24Speaker 3: and over again.
- 40:24Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 40:25Speaker 1: That is what it is. That being said, we didn't
- 40:27Speaker 1: just say top 10. We said the top 40.
- 40:33Speaker 3: Damn.
- 40:34Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 40:35Speaker 3: All right, let's shift to something a little bit more serious. Trump,
- 40:39Speaker 3: the government is still shut down and the Trump administration
- 40:41Speaker 3: must make a Food stamp decision. Federal court gave the
- 40:45Speaker 3: government a choice. It can make full payments by Monday
- 40:48Speaker 3: or partial payments by Wednesday to spare low income Americans
- 40:51Speaker 3: from hardship. This is dealing with the SNAP benefits that
- 40:54Speaker 3: affects roughly 42 million Americans. Bo, what was your reaction
- 40:58Speaker 3: to this news?
- 40:59Speaker 1: I mean, the whole thing for me, this has been
- 41:02Speaker 1: the great discussion that people have had is I had
- 41:05Speaker 1: no idea that many people were on SNAP.
- 41:08Speaker 3: It's a shocking amount of children, too.
- 41:10Speaker 1: It is a shocking. Well, that would be my expectation
- 41:12Speaker 1: is majority children, right? But I am floored by how
- 41:15Speaker 1: many people's response to that was, it must be fraud
- 41:18Speaker 1: as opposed to, damn, that's a lot of poor people. Like,
- 41:23Speaker 1: this country got about 300 million people. Right. The fact
- 41:26Speaker 1: that this is what we're talking about is nuts. Right.
- 41:28Speaker 1: That the sheer number of people is what it is. Now, again,
- 41:33Speaker 1: the problem that always comes up in this, and I
- 41:35Speaker 1: think this has been a thing that's been interesting to
- 41:37Speaker 1: me with a lot of the moves that the right
- 41:38Speaker 1: has made at this point, is because the face of
- 41:40Speaker 1: poverty in America is black people or people of color,
- 41:43Speaker 1: generally speaking, that... The actual fact that it's a lot
- 41:47Speaker 1: of white people, I don't want to get into proportion
- 41:49Speaker 1: of percentages because I don't know that off the top
- 41:51Speaker 1: of my head. But when they do this, they're messing
- 41:53Speaker 1: with the people that's they people. But they don't think
- 41:56Speaker 1: about it because it used to be that you could
- 41:57Speaker 1: just always wield this against poor people thing against black people.
- 42:01Speaker 1: But that doesn't really work anymore. White people seem to
- 42:04Speaker 1: be a little bit more. It's expensive for everyone. They are.
- 42:07Speaker 3: It's expensive. It's expensive for everyone to eat. Yes.
- 42:09Speaker 1: Don't give me. The price game all over the place
- 42:14Speaker 1: is so messed up here. But they're not. You got
- 42:17Speaker 1: to be careful messing with people, but for so long,
- 42:19Speaker 1: because that Bob Barney didn't belly full, but we hungry.
- 42:22Speaker 1: That's real. And those are songs about actual fascist revolution. Now,
- 42:26Speaker 1: this country is not capable of revolution. That part is
- 42:28Speaker 1: not going to happen. I'm just telling you, hungry people
- 42:31Speaker 1: is a really bad place.
- 42:33Speaker 3: Right.
- 42:34Speaker 1: It doesn't work out well for anyone. Trust me on that.
- 42:38Speaker 3: Right. And finally, the downtown Oklahoma City civil rights sit-in
- 42:42Speaker 3: that propelled the movement forward is now memorials where it
- 42:45Speaker 3: happened nearly six decades ago. Thousands gathered over the weekend
- 42:49Speaker 3: to dedicate the national sit-in plaza tribute to the Oklahoma
- 42:53Speaker 3: City youth and the teacher who helped spark the nation's
- 42:56Speaker 3: sit-in movement. Beau, your reaction to this news?
- 43:00Speaker 1: All right. Now, those of you who know me know
- 43:02Speaker 1: why I put this in here is that one of those–
- 43:07Speaker 1: people involved in that sit-in movement the leader on the
- 43:09Speaker 1: student side was my mother barbara and posy jones who
- 43:13Speaker 1: was there for the event unfortunately i was not able
- 43:17Speaker 1: to make it because of some travel hiccups um i
- 43:21Speaker 1: bring this up for a couple of reasons um number
- 43:26Speaker 1: one obviously congratulations to my mom on this one we
- 43:29Speaker 1: went last year to ou where they gave her it's
- 43:32Speaker 1: her alma mater but they gave her an honorary degree
- 43:35Speaker 1: because of her work in this movement um And then
- 43:38Speaker 1: it is great that the city of Oklahoma City, Mayor
- 43:42Speaker 1: David Holt, and with a big helping hand from Sam
- 43:45Speaker 1: Presti of Oklahoma City Thunder, for making this happen. My
- 43:50Speaker 1: mother is incredibly modest about these things. In fact, didn't
- 43:54Speaker 1: really say much about going to this, which is crazy
- 43:58Speaker 1: because they built a statue of my mom in the
- 44:00Speaker 1: city that she's from, right? And she's kind of like,
- 44:02Speaker 1: I got another thing to do over the weekend. Yeah,
- 44:04Speaker 1: I got to hurry up and get back home type
- 44:06Speaker 1: of thing or whatever. But it's so amazing and so
- 44:09Speaker 1: cool to me to see this and to grow up
- 44:12Speaker 1: as an adult and realize that much of my childhood,
- 44:16Speaker 1: I did not properly appreciate the magnitude of the work
- 44:20Speaker 1: that my mother had done. And as I actually thought
- 44:24Speaker 1: more of it, that feeling like the world didn't know
- 44:28Speaker 1: necessarily or appreciate the magnitude of the work that she
- 44:31Speaker 1: has done. Now, these sit-ins in Oklahoma City, what's important
- 44:33Speaker 1: to note is that if you are a student of
- 44:35Speaker 1: American history or Black history, specifically, you think of the
- 44:39Speaker 1: first sit-ins in this country being in Greensboro in 1960.
- 44:43Speaker 1: But no, this is 1958. There was a sit-in in Wichita,
- 44:47Speaker 1: Kansas before the ones in Oklahoma City. But these are
- 44:50Speaker 1: the second, and these were led by children who went
- 44:53Speaker 1: into this department store and sat at the lunch counter.
- 44:56Speaker 1: For two days, it endured the hell that the locals
- 44:59Speaker 1: inflicted upon them for two days until the third day
- 45:01Speaker 1: they were served. And just like that, they integrated that
- 45:04Speaker 1: whole chain, the schools. And then I found out, which
- 45:06Speaker 1: I didn't realize, that after my mother went to college,
- 45:09Speaker 1: that they took the party to Norman. And they were
- 45:11Speaker 1: shutting shit down up there, too. And this is going
- 45:14Speaker 1: on in Oklahoma City when she's 15 years old. Like,
- 45:18Speaker 1: this is amazing stuff. And it's so dope for me
- 45:21Speaker 1: to get older and to appreciate how dope it was
- 45:24Speaker 1: and to see other people appreciate it. But another reason
- 45:27Speaker 1: I brought this up that I think is important. Look,
- 45:29Speaker 1: Oklahoma is not a progressive place. I say that as
- 45:32Speaker 1: a statement of fact, not as an insult. That's something
- 45:34Speaker 1: I think that we would all agree upon. But in
- 45:39Speaker 1: this time, especially where we're seeing people roll back so
- 45:44Speaker 1: many things and look, maybe this monument would not have
- 45:48Speaker 1: come about if the idea to get it going did
- 45:51Speaker 1: not get started, you know, until later, until like in
- 45:54Speaker 1: the midst of this whole Trump situation. But the truth
- 45:56Speaker 1: is we watching them dial back this stuff all over
- 45:58Speaker 1: the place. And I have to send a shout out
- 46:00Speaker 1: to the city of Oklahoma City and the mayor Holt
- 46:02Speaker 1: for the fact that they did this. That is a
- 46:06Speaker 1: Republican mayor. Now, he's a different kind of Republican than
- 46:09Speaker 1: a lot of them that you would know. But the
- 46:11Speaker 1: decision to do this and to commemorate this in this town,
- 46:14Speaker 1: in a place where you would not think that that
- 46:15Speaker 1: would necessarily happen, I think is a really, really, really
- 46:18Speaker 1: big deal. Like I actually had talked to them about
- 46:21Speaker 1: giving them some money. to help with this that I
- 46:23Speaker 1: never got around to doing. My bad, guys. Let me
- 46:25Speaker 1: know if I could, you know, put something on it
- 46:27Speaker 1: after the fact. But anyway, it was interesting. I talked
- 46:29Speaker 1: to the mayor on DM on Twitter and I said, hey, man,
- 46:32Speaker 1: I would like to talk to somebody about helping with
- 46:34Speaker 1: the project. And he says, well, you know, the guy
- 46:37Speaker 1: you should talk to, you probably know who he is,
- 46:39Speaker 1: Sam Presti. And so I get in touch with Presti
- 46:41Speaker 1: and we're on the phone and he's like, hey, you know,
- 46:43Speaker 1: so we take the rookies to Memphis to go check
- 46:47Speaker 1: out the Civil Rights Museum every year. And he saw
- 46:49Speaker 1: something about the Oklahoma City movement and he says, Why
- 46:52Speaker 1: did I have to go to Memphis to find something
- 46:54Speaker 1: out about this? And so they come back to Oklahoma
- 46:56Speaker 1: City and that's the genesis of this. And then they
- 46:59Speaker 1: actually made it happen. And he was there on Saturday
- 47:01Speaker 1: and was kind enough to speak to my mother and
- 47:03Speaker 1: to like send me videos and stuff of her there
- 47:04Speaker 1: or whatever. But I got to get those people to
- 47:07Speaker 1: credit for helping to make this happen in a time
- 47:10Speaker 1: where people want to do anything but acknowledge these sorts
- 47:13Speaker 1: of things. They did that and they did it up.
- 47:16Speaker 1: So thank you to them. But again, congratulations to the
- 47:21Speaker 1: dopest lady I know.
- 47:27Speaker 3: All right, Bo, another great day of voicemails. We'll start
- 47:30Speaker 3: with the first one.
- 47:32Speaker 2: Greetings, Mr.
- 47:33Speaker 7: Jones and Mr.
- 47:33Speaker 2: Brumley.
- 47:34Speaker 7: My name is Earl, and I'm calling from just outside
- 47:36Speaker 7: of Philly. I was hoping to get your opinion on
- 47:39Speaker 7: a concert I recently attended. Raphael Sabit came to town,
- 47:42Speaker 7: and my wife and I decided to drop the 400-plus
- 47:45Speaker 7: fees to check him out. We figured he's a great musician,
- 47:48Speaker 7: a solid songwriter, and between Tony, Tony, Tony, Lucy Pearl,
- 47:52Speaker 7: and his solo projects, we figured we were in for
- 47:55Speaker 7: some jams. Turns out it was basically just a TED
- 47:58Speaker 7: Talk slash documentary with a live score. My question is,
- 48:02Speaker 7: do you think artists are obligated to go like the
- 48:04Speaker 7: OJs and give the people what they want? Or do
- 48:08Speaker 7: you think artists have every right to express themselves any
- 48:11Speaker 7: way they want and we just hope we get lucky?
- 48:13Speaker 7: As an aside, we saw Stevie last year and he
- 48:17Speaker 7: didn't play as. Been with you since an interview you
- 48:20Speaker 7: did with He Who Shall Not Be Named. Thank you
- 48:23Speaker 7: for all that you do. I'm up on you.
- 48:29Speaker 1: Shout out. I'm not, I ain't even sure who we
- 48:31Speaker 1: not naming. I got another one guy we don't name
- 48:34Speaker 1: on this show, but I never interviewed him.
- 48:36Speaker 3: I was curious too. I have to be honest. That
- 48:39Speaker 3: was kind of the reason, part of the reason with voicemails.
- 48:42Speaker 1: I'm not, I'm not, I'm not, I'm not sure. Maybe
- 48:45Speaker 1: he'll leave another voicemail and tell us who he was
- 48:47Speaker 1: talking about. I'd heard about Raphael Sadiq doing this, by
- 48:50Speaker 1: the way, on this show. I had heard that. I don't,
- 48:55Speaker 1: I don't know. I mean, this is what I think generally. I,
- 48:58Speaker 1: I went to a Sturgill Simpson concert. It was either
- 49:00Speaker 1: last year or the year before. I can't remember which,
- 49:02Speaker 1: but I made a very similar point about that show,
- 49:04Speaker 1: which is, hey, man, I want a show. Give me
- 49:06Speaker 1: the show. So do the artists have the right to
- 49:08Speaker 1: express themselves, however? Certainly. But I also think they have
- 49:11Speaker 1: an obligation. They know what people pay for. You know
- 49:14Speaker 1: what I mean? Like, if you're going to get a
- 49:17Speaker 1: little far afield, you need to make that very clear.
- 49:20Speaker 1: clear when people pay for their tickets. But you know
- 49:24Speaker 1: what it is that people paid for. So, yes, the
- 49:26Speaker 1: artist has the right to do whatever they want, except
- 49:30Speaker 1: once you start selling this to people. Once you start
- 49:32Speaker 1: selling it to people, it is a product. And you
- 49:36Speaker 1: owe it to them to give them their money's worth.
- 49:39Speaker 3: It's what the last 45 minutes are for. Just run
- 49:40Speaker 3: through all your hits.
- 49:41Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, yeah. This is what it is. I watch
- 49:45Speaker 1: a lot of Prince concerts on YouTube, and you can
- 49:47Speaker 1: tell the different points at which he's trying to make
- 49:49Speaker 1: a different point, and then it's like, hey, hey, hey, hey, buddy.
- 49:51Speaker 1: Let's go crazy. Let's get nuts. Okay? Okay? Thanks.
- 49:58Speaker 4: All right.
- 49:58Speaker 3: Here's our next one.
- 50:00Speaker 5: What's going on, Bomani Jones Podcast?
- 50:03Speaker 2: Mr.
- 50:04Speaker 4: Jones, I just want to ask, if any games really
- 50:09Speaker 4: stand out to you in any sport or any field even,
- 50:13Speaker 4: which is just a historic ass-whooping. As a University of
- 50:17Speaker 4: Iowa alumni, my freshman year was the 2015 season in
- 50:21Speaker 4: which the University of Iowa Hawkeyes met a man named McCaffrey,
- 50:27Speaker 4: Christian McCaffrey, in the Rose Bowl against Stanford.
- 50:31Speaker 7: I watched that.
- 50:32Speaker 4: He whooped our ass so bad, I learned about.
- 50:35Speaker 3: Football that day.
- 50:36Speaker 5: Like, oh, we thought they were going to give it
- 50:39Speaker 5: to him, so they threw it over the top. Again
- 50:43Speaker 5: and again and again. And then they let him run it.
- 50:50Speaker 5: And he scored again and again and again. So any
- 50:53Speaker 5: historic ass whoopings which taught you about a sporting event?
- 50:57Speaker 2: All right.
- 50:58Speaker 4: Peace and love.
- 51:00Speaker 2: Thank you.
- 51:02Speaker 1: I don't know how much I got educated per se,
- 51:05Speaker 1: but January 1st, 1991, Texas played against Miami in the
- 51:11Speaker 1: Cotton Bowl. It is the day that I learned that
- 51:15Speaker 1: my daddy's favorite phrase in the midst of a sporting
- 51:18Speaker 1: event is, beat them down! 46-3 is the final score.
- 51:22Speaker 1: Miami won that game, scored 46 points with over 200
- 51:26Speaker 1: yards of penalty on the opening kickoff. Robert Bailey knocked
- 51:29Speaker 1: the kick returner unconscious. It is the most thorough beatdown
- 51:34Speaker 1: of any sort that I have ever seen. And I've
- 51:37Speaker 1: watched the Rodney King video. Never seen anything like this
- 51:41Speaker 1: before in my life. Never again. Never will.
- 51:44Speaker 2: It is.
- 51:44Speaker 1: And for those of us who are old enough to
- 51:47Speaker 1: remember it, we will never forget it. I know Joel
- 51:50Speaker 1: Anderson's probably favorite football game of all time. Can't even
- 51:52Speaker 1: blame him. Just yikes. Just yikes. That's the one. You
- 51:58Speaker 1: can show games with bigger scores like that time Joel
- 52:01Speaker 1: Anderson's alma mater got beat. What was it, like 100-7
- 52:05Speaker 1: against Georgia?
- 52:05Speaker 3: I think it was 62-7.
- 52:07Speaker 1: 62-7. There we go. Nah, nah, nah. It could have
- 52:10Speaker 1: been 100-3 the way that Texas got their ass whooped
- 52:15Speaker 1: by Miami in that game. Oh, my goodness. Yeah, gold standard.
- 52:20Speaker 3: All right, here's our last one.
- 52:22Speaker 2: Hey, Bo, this is Grant from Orlando. Y'all talking about
- 52:25Speaker 2: Wimby reminding me of my college experience. So I'm a
- 52:29Speaker 2: big guy. I'm in college. I'm 6'2, around 245, 250.
- 52:33Speaker 2: So big guy. People always ask me if I played football.
- 52:37Speaker 2: I did not.
- 52:38Speaker 1: But.
- 52:40Speaker 2: Because I was a pretty lackadaisical student. I was always
- 52:44Speaker 2: in summer school, so I was there with the football
- 52:46Speaker 2: players and basketball players every summer. So I was always
- 52:49Speaker 2: playing pickup with them because there weren't a lot of
- 52:50Speaker 2: folks around. So if they were playing pickup, it was
- 52:53Speaker 2: pretty fun. And obviously the basketball players did not play
- 52:56Speaker 2: as much as the football players. But one time towards
- 52:58Speaker 2: the end of summer school, I am on the court,
- 53:01Speaker 2: and I'm on a team with a bunch of football
- 53:03Speaker 2: players against the basketball players. And, you know, tensions are high.
- 53:08Speaker 2: They hate losing to each other. You know, all football
- 53:10Speaker 2: players can make a hoop. All basketball players are really
- 53:13Speaker 2: disrespected by that. I'm guarding someone, like, deep on the bench,
- 53:19Speaker 2: doesn't play very much. But, like I said, I'm a
- 53:22Speaker 2: big guy, so I'm in the post. And my man
- 53:24Speaker 2: gets beat on a pick and roll, so I have
- 53:26Speaker 2: to switch on to the big man. And I switch
- 53:30Speaker 2: on to Festus Azili, who is every bit of 7'1, 260, 270,
- 53:33Speaker 2: as we've seen recently. in the league, you know, when
- 53:38Speaker 2: he won with the Warriors. So I get switched on
- 53:40Speaker 2: to Festus. It's game point. I'm 6'2.
- 53:43Speaker 3: He's 7'1.
- 53:45Speaker 2: The Vandy Rett Center is looking like a place I
- 53:48Speaker 2: don't want to be anymore. So I get switched on
- 53:50Speaker 2: to Block, and I literally walk off the court and
- 53:52Speaker 2: let him dunk that because I'm not getting dunked on.
- 53:55Speaker 2: That's my basketball story about, you know, kind of you
- 53:58Speaker 2: describing how playing folks were playing with Wimby. So thanks, Bo.
- 54:01Speaker 2: Love the show.
- 54:03Speaker 1: I love that. He's like, I'm not even going to try.
- 54:07Speaker 1: I don't see the point. I don't see the point.
- 54:09Speaker 1: Ain't no switches. That's the moral of that story. Ain't
- 54:12Speaker 1: no switches.
- 54:13Speaker 3: That is discretion is the better part of valor. Whatever
- 54:16Speaker 3: that expression is.
- 54:18Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 54:18Speaker 1: There's nothing good that could come from this whatsoever. Hell no. Oh,
- 54:23Speaker 1: my God. I've never heard of somebody catching the switch
- 54:27Speaker 1: and just being like, all right, I'm going to go
- 54:28Speaker 1: down to the other end. You're ready for offense, right?
- 54:33Speaker 1: Save this energy for something a bit more worthwhile. But
- 54:37Speaker 1: ladies and gentlemen, thanks so much for joining us here
