2:51
always my pleasure to welcome in. Mister Chris Witthrow from the Benny Keatam Shrine.
2:54
Good morning, sir, welcome to the show. Good morning, Dave,
2:57
thank you so much. Good to be here today. It has been
3:00
a while. It's been a while and you're looking fitting and find as always
3:05
man great to have you here. Well, thank you. It's always a
3:07
pleasure to be here with you and giving us the opportunity to spread the word
3:12
of the Benny Keatam Shrine. So really happy about that. And you've got
3:15
something in specific that you want to talk about. It's happening a week from
3:19
this Saturday on the Elk River. But before we do get to that,
3:23
what is new with the shrine, let's just start lots of great things going
3:25
on with the shrine. I knew the potent take. This year has had
3:30
a lot of activities, bringing a lot of people together, doing a lot
3:32
of fun things. We had some great concerts, We've had some good food,
3:36
a lot of exciting things going on down at the Shrine center. All
3:39
right, and of course with all these activities going on, I'd like to
3:42
give people an opportunity to say, if you need a place for a baby
3:47
shower, a wedding shower, class reunion, a place to gather after a
3:52
funeral, or whatever the case may be, you got a fine, fine
3:54
facility that it's available for rent. Yes, and we can accommodate up to
3:59
four hundred people, so we can do just about anything. And if you
4:02
do want to take a look at the facility, maybe rented out, you
4:06
can go down to one hundred Charrier Street and again that's where that really nice
4:12
parking lot is right beside the coliseum. And uh or you can call three
4:15
zero four three four three non four zero five and they'll be happy to set
4:20
up in the time for you to come in and check everything out. So
4:24
if you're coming downtown for anything, I mean especially the big concerts, and
4:27
there's a bunch of them been coming through the Capital City here as of late,
4:30
you guys are always out there. Great parking at the Convention Center,
4:33
Easy on, easy off. Yep, small donation get you right in the
4:38
front door of the Convention and Visitors Center there the old Civic Center. I
4:43
guess you'll call it the guys, I guess we'll still call it the Civic
4:47
But it is a great, great opportunity for anyone coming into town looking for
4:53
a place to park for an event there uh and we're always there. And
4:57
again, if you ever need a place to hold a venue a little event.
5:00
We're always happy to talk and meet with you. It's got a full
5:03
kitchen and everything, and kitchen everything. I mean, it's it's ready to
5:06
it's ready to go. Yeah, it's good. So it's a great facility.
5:10
Attended several events there. It is a great facility. So again,
5:12
if you're looking for a place available for rent for you know, any kind
5:15
of a gathering, they can help you out. A right, let's talk
5:16
specifically, Chris about this this big event, the Benny Keatam Shrine presenting the
5:21
Float the Elk River event. It's Saturday, October twenty ninth. All right,
5:27
Now, you guys have done this in the past. This is our
5:29
second annual. Second Okay, I'm gonna say because I thought I had John
5:30
talking about last year. So what exactly is going to go on other than
5:33
just floating down the river. Well there's first of all, it is it
5:38
is a fundraiser. And now all the proceeds will go back to the temple
5:41
so that we can keep the lights on, keep the parking lot going.
5:44
And and again that is our home base where we reach out and do our
5:48
philanthropy for the Shriners children and talk about that philanthropy. What are some of
5:51
the things you do? So, as Shriners, we raise money to help
5:56
children in need of different varieties of elements. You know, orthopedics we deal
6:02
with in Lexington and then we directly donate to the Dayton Hospital as well where
6:12
they deal with burn, scarring, cleft, flip, cleft, pilot,
6:15
all that kind of stuff. So we do some pretty pretty wonderful work helping
6:19
the children out here in our area. And so that's that's what we do.
6:24
But you know, one of the things that we have to do is
6:26
we've got to keep the lights on. We've got to keep that building going
6:28
so that we have a base or a fort if you will, where we
6:31
launch all of our fun events. Absolutely, and that being said, on
6:39
the twenty ninth, we are having our second annual Elk River Paddlefest as we
6:44
coined it. It starts at the Blue Creek Boat Ramp, which has just
6:49
been put in here recently by the dn R, which is a wonderful boat
6:54
ramp, and we will float down to Coonskin and once you get there and
6:58
we get you pulled out to have food vendors, We're going to have a
7:00
band the weekend Warriors are playing and they are always so gracious to donate their
7:05
time. A wonderful band, good people, So we're excited about that.
7:09
But as far as the logistics are concerned, on the twenty eighth Friday,
7:14
from seven am to seven pm, you can come by the boat ramp there
7:17
Blue Creek, drop yourself off. We're gonna have an armed guard there all
7:21
night so it'll be good and safe. And then nine am the next morning
7:26
you come down to Coonskin. We'll have a big registration table set up.
7:29
You come in, you get your T shirt, your whistle, your sticker,
7:32
We'll put you on a bus will shuttle you. How do you need
7:35
a whistle? Well, it's it's a low so any watercraft now has to
7:39
have a whistling. So this's been in effect for a while, but a
7:43
lot of people don't realize, Hey, just because it doesn't have a motor
7:46
doesn't mean you don't need a whistle. So somebody just pointed out I said
7:48
Saturday, October twenty ninth, I did not mean October twenty ninth, ninth
7:53
June. Thanks for texting me that texture, but yeah, it's not October.
7:57
You know. They keep you on your test it's June not October,
8:01
but go ahead. But yeah, so we'll get up in the morning,
8:03
come down on the twenty ninth and there at Coonskin. We'll put you on
8:07
a bus, will shuttle you up, We'll help you in the water.
8:09
You're gonna have a wonderful trip. The Elk River is beautiful and it's a
8:13
really nice float and there's always places that you can pull up and kind of
8:18
jump into water and refresh and then you come down. We're going to help
8:24
you get your boat out and you can come over and have some food and
8:28
listen to some bands where this year is something new. We are giving away
8:33
a kayak, so everyone in the register is going to have a chance to
8:35
win a new kayak. So that's awesome. Talking about Sushwithro again for the
8:41
Benny keatam trying to Dave Allan showing five Aniline presentative part by General Hardware,
8:45
Windfield and Milton General number of Windfield. For all projects big and small,
8:48
please remember to shop locally and visit General Hardware WV dot com and for those
8:54
and we kind of got into this a little bit last week when we were
8:56
talking about the tour to Coal and everything that went on there, there are
9:00
those that will listen. And again, you and I were talking about ages
9:03
before we've went on, because we're roughly the same age. I've found out
9:05
I'm a year older. Uh but uh but we're both good looking dudes.
9:09
Uh but but but there may be some concern about the safety of the rivers.
9:16
Address that well, you know, first of all, we make sure
9:20
no one's launched without the proper safety gear. Yeah, you know, I'm
9:24
talking about the river itself though, Oh no, the Elk River is very
9:26
safe. It's relatively shallow in most areas. So we have children, you
9:33
know, certainly if you have a young child, we we want to make
9:35
sure that they're accompanied with an adult with them. But you know, with
9:41
the safety gear and the river it moves very slowly and and so it's really
9:45
good. But it's still it is. It's a lot better than it than
9:48
what a lot of rivers used to be. It's very clean now and there's
9:52
been a lot of work watershed programs that are starting up on the Elk River,
9:58
but has really gone very far on the Coal River with the Coal River
10:03
Group doing all the things that they've done to clean that river up, make
10:05
it safe for accessibility in and now the river. All of these things are
10:09
happening across West Virginia and especially our local rivers here in the Kanaal Valley.
10:13
It's the dn r's really gotten behind the whole thing, putting in multiple boat
10:18
ramps, making it safer, nicer, cleaner to get in. And now
10:22
the river it's it's a wonderful thing. Flatwater is really growing. It is
10:26
not just here in the Kanal Valley, I mean it's and all over the
10:31
state of West Virginia. I mean it's it's very big. And again I
10:33
know that you know, for the we haven't always done as good a job
10:37
as we could do with keeping our rivers clean as you well, you know
10:39
as I mean this time fifty years ago, you probably wouldn't have thought about
10:43
that an event like this. But it's I mean, you know, it's
10:48
it's it's d n R approved, it's it's it's all clean, it's all
10:50
fresh, it's ready to go, and you've got the rails to trails that
10:54
Clint Denon area getting involved. We've got a lot of kayak groups going out
10:58
and doing trash your Kayak Days, which basically means you get together and you
11:03
float down on your kayaks or your canoes, and and and they have competitions
11:07
to see how much trash they can get on their kayak before they get out.
11:09
So there's a whole group, a whole concerted effort of making our waterways
11:15
cleaner, safer, and funner. And it's it's it's really proven to be
11:20
beneficial to the state. And there's just gonna be a big old party there
11:22
once you get to the end of this thing, right, with music and
11:26
all kinds of great food and travel and so on and so forth. So
11:28
and this is a kid friendly event, so bring out, you know,
11:31
grandkids, bring your kids out, your niece's nephews, and come out and
11:35
enjoy. It's a wonderful, fun filled family day where you can relax and
11:39
enjoy the water and scenery. We were out a couple of weeks ago and
11:43
we filmed a bald eagle there right on the Elk River. Amazing. We've
11:48
seen river otters. We had a woodpecker above us, just throwing wood everywhere,
11:52
and deer everywhere. It's just a beautiful scene. And it's a nice
11:56
relaxing day where everybody can have a good time and fellowship and come together to
12:01
support a good cause like the Benny Keatam Shrine Center here in Charleston. Now
12:05
what time does everything? Could give us the timeline again, because you're going
12:09
to start on Friday, Friday, drop off Blue Creek from seven am seven
12:13
pm. You can drop off your kayaks again, we'll have security there all
12:16
night long with them. And then the next morning nine am at Coonskin.
12:20
As soon as you come in, we're going to be overlocated next to where
12:22
the pool is a parking lot and that's where you'll park. We'll have a
12:26
big registration table and then we'll have buses leaving from there taking you back up
12:31
to the Blue Creek ramp. Excuse me, so nine am Saturday morning,
12:37
and we'll get everybody up there, get them in, and then when you
12:39
get done, we're going to we'll have people down there to help you get
12:43
your kayaks out. We're going to have a little shuttle from the boat ramp
12:46
over to your vehicle. You get in your vehicle, come over load your
12:50
kayak and go park and come back and enjoy the festivities afterwards with the weekend
12:54
warriors and all the food. It's going to be a great time. Indeed,
12:56
it is and I've got some information posts on my social media, but
13:01
where's the best place for people to go to learn more about it. The
13:03

You never know. There are some bad people in this world, and
16:49
they like to take things. You know, even though we live in the
16:52
state that has a relatively low crime rate, bad people like to take things
16:56
that don't belong to them sometimes, So just give you a little If you're

Plus Clintenon, Mayor Kay Summers and counsel of Dave Night are going to

17:26
That's all coming up on tomorrow's show. Welcome to the show now,
17:30
Kanawa County Commission President Lance Wheeler, Commission mister President, Good morning, Welcome
17:33
back to the show. Good morning, Dave, thanks for having me,
17:36
Thank you for being here. Since you and I last talked, we have
17:37
a new commissioner now to replace Kent Carper, that being Mark slot Nick.
17:41
Your thoughts on the new commissioner, Well, Mark is somebody that I've been
17:45
working with obviously for the last three years. You know, he's been with
17:47
the county for thirty two years. He's worked elections. He's been the person
17:53
that Commissioner Slango and I go to when we need a question about the canvassing.
17:59
He knows the county in and outs. He you know, put his
18:03
application in and when I saw his name, first thing I thought was it's
18:07
got to be Mark. So he just basically just moved a couple of feet
18:10
up right. He already had the keys to the building, he already knew
18:14
the staff, he knows the elected officials. I mean, he's already hit
18:17
the ground running. And I know he's actually going to be on the news
18:19
later at noon today. I mean, it's just somebody who's for the next
18:23
six months, we're going to be able to get these things done, these
18:26
big projects coming up, and Mark's want to be able to be right there
18:30
giving his advice but also giving his opinion as a county commissioner. I think
18:33
that Mark's a great fit. And I haven't heard one person say one bad
18:37
thing about that selection. So I think that, you know, in politics,
18:41
shows that we probably made the right pick on that. Speaking of selections,
18:45
we also have a new prosecutor, Chuck Miller of course opted to retire
18:48
now since entire retirement in May. As retirement was effective last week. You
18:52
guys got together made the decision on deb Ruslink and she will take over the
18:56
return of the term. Of course, he's not full office. She's basically
19:00
just taken over his term and then she will run in the h in the
19:04
general election, she'll be running for the position. But talk about the appointment
19:08
of debra'snik, Well, let me first say that, uh, you know,
19:11
Chuck, we want to wish him well in his retirement. He has
19:15
served this county, well, he has served that prosecutor's office. Well,
19:18
uh, he's definitely going to be sorely missed. And I think Debra said
19:22
the said it best on our meeting with Thursday night. It's gonna be big
19:25
shoes to feel, I know, something like that. You know, I
19:27
came in for hoppy source did see, and those were big shoes to feel
19:32
and a lot of expect high expectations come in. So she's gonna she's going
19:34
to feel those expectations. But I think she's going to do a wonderful job.
19:37
I think she was the right fit. You know, we had three
19:41
applicants, including Deborah, and they were all wonderful applicants, and so they're
19:45
all well qualified, can get the job done for the next six months.
19:49
But you know what we're looking at is again, how can you come into
19:55
this position and be ready from day one? Deborah works there at the prosecutor's
20:00
office. She knows the case load, she knows where the employee's offices are,
20:04
she knows the employees at the prosecutor's office. She's very well liked.
20:08
We didn't hear one bad thing about her in her position at the prosecutor's office
20:12
the entire time we were discussing this, So you know, really, in
20:17
all honesty, at the very end of the day, Debrah's going to do
20:19
an excellent job. She's going to be able to fill this role for six
20:22
months, and then at the end of the day, the people will get
20:26
the vote. And you know, I said at the commission meeting, we
20:29
for these two selections, had the unfortunate duty of filling these positions because I
20:34
don't want to have to fill an elected position that the voters didn't have a
20:40
choice one. That's not what I want, but that's what the code tells
20:42
the commission that we have to do. I had to make a vote,
20:45
and I'm proud to say that I think that we found these individuals. It's
20:48
going to be able to fill these roles. They're not going to take advantage
20:52
of the office. They're going to do what they think is right. And
20:55
then we'll get the voters the opportunity in November to pick who they want,
21:00
which, at the end of the day, is what we want. Talking
21:02
to Gnaw County Commissioned preident of Lance Wheeler, the Dave Island showing five eighty
21:04
lives brought to you part by Morgan to Morgan, America is the largest injury
21:08
law firm. If you're injured, hired Morgan to Morgan and again America's largest
21:12
injury law firm. Lance being someone from the coal fields, I have seen
21:17
firsthand the success in the economic impact of the hatfil McCoy trails. This came
21:22
around, I guess sometime the nineteen nineties and a lot of us who were
21:26
down in that part of the world thought I don't want to say this is
21:29
the dumbest thing I've ever heard of, but we thought, why would anybody
21:30
want to come here and run around these mountains like we've done for years.
21:36
Well, I was sadly mistaken because I've seen the economic impact that it's had
21:40
on places like Gilbert and Mingo County and mate Wan and places like that.
21:45
This area I'm talking about, Canaw County area getting really more involved than you've
21:48
already been involved in, but even a little bit more with these new dirt
21:52
bike trails that are going to be coming out near a Meadowbrook and Tornado talk
21:56
about those, Well, so I'm all about outdoor record. I think that
22:00
outdoor recreation is a from a County Commission perspective, it's the low hanging fruit
22:06
to bringing economic opportunity and tourism here, and we've done that with Shawnee.
22:10
Shawne has been absolutely wonderful and excellent and we're going to see that with the
22:12
presence Cup coming here just you know this weekend ending today. But you know,
22:17
I wanted to get hat film McCoy here in Kennall County. It was
22:19
something that we've always talked about for decades of how can we take what's happening
22:25
over in those southern coal fields where Dave Allen grew up, and how can
22:27
we bring those here to Kennall County. And it made difficult because we are
22:32
a little bit more of a you know, urban area compared you know,
22:37
we have a lot of cities, a lot of infrastructure. But what I've
22:41
found r though we do, but it's kind of hard because then you have
22:44
to have the property owners to all agree. These These are small parcels.
22:48
Some of them are owned by estates, by a son and daughter who live
22:52
out of state. You can't even get a hold of them. I mean,
22:53
there's a lot of issues that you run into. But what I found
22:56
was that the Kannall County Commission, through our Parks and Wreck owned six hundred
23:00
and fifty acres undeveloped. And we had forgotten about it because at the time
23:06
when we bought this, what you're saying, Dave, this was an opportunity.
23:08
No one was thinking about people coming in here to ride dirt bikes and
23:11
ATVs. And so I found this land and I said, guys, we
23:15
got to do something with this. I got with Jeff Lusk with Hatfilm,
23:18
McCoy great guy. Awesome guy brought him in my office and we talked about
23:22
it, and he looked at me. He said, Commissioner, we're going
23:23
to do something with this. What we came down to is what they want
23:27
to do was dirt bikes trails. What we noticed is with the Hatfil McCoy,
23:30
is that a lot of these trails are ATV, so they're very wide
23:33
right to fit an ATV, and the dirt bikers don't really like that.
23:37
They like to be more natural, almost like they're on a deer trail,
23:40
is how he explained to me. And so when we looked at this,
23:44
we realized, okay, so the dirt bikers are looking for something just for
23:47
them. We have six hundred and fifty acres, which isn't large enough to
23:51
do ATV trail. I mean, you're gonna get maybe ten fifteen miles out
23:52
of that, and that's no one's coming in for that. But for dirt
23:56
bike trails, we can get over thirty miles track dedicated just to dirt bikers,
24:03
and we can be out in Tornado, minutes away from Corridor G,
24:07
minutes away from Saint Albans, with all the hotels, all the restaurants,
24:11
and we can have this opportunity, and we're just about finished. I've been
24:15
in touch with them. We're looking at a late summer, so late July,
24:19
maybe early August opening. They want to make sure they do it right,
24:23
and I told them that, I said, well, for when this
24:26
is finished, it's going to be finished. We're not We're not rushing this.
24:29
So they're doing what they think they can do to get as many people
24:33
here. I'm already getting calls from people from Pennsylvania, from Ohio, even
24:37
Putnam, I mean Puttnam County. I've got a lot of people from fut
24:40
mccony very excited to vote for me again, vote for me because of this,
24:44
but they can't vote for me because they live in Putnam County, not
24:47
legally anymore. No, but but it's great to see that this is going
24:49
to be wider than just Cannel County. I'm getting calls from parents who have
24:53
six eight year olds who ride dirt bikes telling me that they're excited that their
24:57
kids going to be able to go somewhere and they don't feel like they're trespassing
25:02
on private property. They don't feel like they're intruding on someone or another trail
25:06
and this is going to be safe, it's going to be looked after,
25:08
it's going to be taken care of all by Hatfield and McCoy. Man.
25:12
You know this is It's given me chills even talking about it. Still,
25:15
this is going to be very exciting, and I think we're going to see
25:18
one of the largest influxes of people twenty four to seven, three sixty five
25:23
throughout the entire year coming to Conall County just to ride on this dirt bike
25:27
trail. The area of Tornado is gonna benit from this, The city of
25:32
Saint Albans is gonna benefit from it, and high tides rises all ships right,
25:36
Dave City, Charleston is gonna benefit. I think everyone's going to benefit
25:38
from it. So we're going to be getting this announcement out soon. I
25:41
can't wait to have the ribbon cutting. My idea is we're going to have
25:45
some young kids who ride dirt bikes drive through the tape so we can cut
25:51
the ribbon. But I think you're teaching destruction of property automatically. Well,
25:55
no, it's gonna be. It's gonna be. It's allowed. It's allowed
25:57
this one time allowed, and we're gonna have d and R on the property
26:02
too with Hatim McCoy. They take care of this. They make sure it's
26:03
looked after. They make sure there's no incidents, and if there are,
26:07
they take care of it. So this is going to be a great partnership.
26:10
And I think it's gonna be greatful. And I always think about the
26:11
economic impact of this, as you said, putting people in hotels, putting
26:17
people in restaurants. I mean, and I know what it has been for
26:19
southern West Virginia. I mean you go down to some of the Wyoming County
26:23
and some of these areas right now, and you see the trucks that are
26:27
rolling in and normally, I mean, this is people that do this to
26:32
do these trails, whether it's ATV's, u TV's, bikes or whatever.
26:36
This is not an inexpensive hobby. I mean, normally you see a ninety
26:41
thousand dollars truck pulling a trailer, you know, loaded down with the with
26:45
with with ATVs and whatnot. This is not inexpensive and they don't care to
26:48
spend money when they come in. These individuals that come in, these are
26:52
doctors, these are these are business owners. Uh, these are individuals that
26:56
have a lot of money. They're well respected in their community as well.
27:00
They don't come down here, they don't destroy property. These are people who
27:03
come they love the hobby, they respect the nature of it, and they
27:07
just want to come out and ride the trails because they know if they take
27:10
care of it, They're hoping everyone else takes care of it because they're not
27:12
coming Once Davey repeatedly, Yeah, I'm told that. You know, I'm
27:15
not a dirt bike ride. I used to ride a little bit as a
27:18
kid, but I've never done trails like this, And I'm told that.
27:21
Listen, you can only get about fifteen miles in a day, you know,
27:23
really good day fifteen miles. So this is going to be a two
27:26
day event for people. They're going to come down here, they're going to
27:29
stay the night, and they have to be off the trails of dark.
27:32
Yeah. So they got to do something. Yeah, they got to go
27:33
to dinner, they got to go, you know, to a show or
27:37
whatever. They got to do something. Look what Shawnee's doing right now with
27:38
the President's cup. I mean, it's absolutely incredible. I want to talk
27:41
about that president. Approximately how many people, I think we've had over one
27:45
hundred teams approximately how many people that I don't have that number. I'm going
27:49
to be honest with you, but we're looking at a millions of dollars in
27:52
economic impact just from this President's Cup. And this is a region I was
27:56
told this morning. I want to say this because it is a little bit
28:00
you know, proud to West Virginia. We had four West Virginia teams,
28:02
uh, make it to the championship, so they're going to get to go
28:06
to Kansas, which in West Virginia is a little bit in the world of
28:08
soccer. West Virginia is a little bit late to the game. I mean,
28:11
it didn't really become as big a thing to the last you know,
28:14
a couple of decades here as it is now. It's growing. It's it's
28:18
growing. I'm seeing it here just in our valley of Kanwall County. Uh.
28:22
And I think a lot of in part to do that is Shawnee.
28:23
It's given a a place for kids to go and learn to play, to
28:30
experience, and I think Shawnee has has grown the sport of soccer here in
28:34
West Virginia. Uh. And again, you know those four teams, congratulations
28:37
do you all you worked hard to do that. That's a. This is
28:40
a regional I mean we were talking about states of Pennsylvania, Connecticut, uh,
28:44
Kentucky, Virginia. I mean these are massive amount. This is a
28:48
big region. So for them to get to go to qualify and go to
28:51
go to the nationally the championship, that's that's wonderful. And we have sent
28:56
players in these sports over the years. We've sent them to Kansas, We've
29:00
sent them. Now a lot of those those places are coming here. They're
29:03
coming here, They're coming here. I mean people from Canada are coming here
29:07
to the Kanaal Value to play as opposed to us every weekend, you know,
29:11
having to take off to Charlotte or Pittsburgh or Richmond or whatever. We
29:14
spent talk about international talk about tort coal. I mean we just had tort
29:17
cole over the weekend and the Core River Group did a wonderful job. Someone
29:21
from Australia came for torticole, came to Kannall County here in West Virginia to
29:26
tour the coal. You know, the twelve mile longest paddle events in the
29:32
nation. Came flew in from Australia so they could participate in toward the call.
29:37
That's incredible. I mean, that's that's big time, Dave for a
29:41
big time. That's that's what we need. But Dave Allen showing five any
29:44
live bride to a part by Husbands Pizza this month as your favorite husband's get
29:47
a large at nich Pepperoni Pizza and any hole tenant sub only twenty three ninety
29:51
nine before we let you go. It is summertime. I want to talk
29:52
about playgrounds. I understand you're looking at replacing some playground structures coon Skin,
29:57
meadowood Pineer parks get into that little Yeah. I mentioned the idea on your
30:02
show with your listeners last time I was here. But you know again,
30:04
our playgrounds are thirty years old and they are dilapidated. They are falling apart.
30:11
They are hazards to the kids because of all the broken material on it.
30:15
And we've been getting together with parks and rec getting with a it's called
30:21
Source Well, it's a contract that we can go through so we don't have
30:23
to bit it out through the state and it's a playground company that will offer
30:27
us a pretty good discount when a lot of this in bulk, and it's
30:32
going to be it's going to be a little bit more costly. But you
30:36
know, Dave, every time I come on here, you always have the
30:38
comments after I leave. You never mentioned what the comments are, so that
30:41
scares me. That might be bad, But I have no comments for you.
30:45
Well sorry, Well that's great. So last time somebody said, well,
30:48
this is just a place for individuals to go there for criminal activity.
30:52
These playgrounds I'm talking about, whether it's pound or park metal, wood or
30:56
coonskin. They're inside the park system. We have if we close the gates
31:00
at night. We also have park police that are constantly looking this area.
31:04
And every time that I go, there's ten to twelve families at a given
31:08
time, you know, playing on this playground. But I see these kids,
31:12
I mean they actually they literally point to show the broken pieces and the
31:15
fact they can't go down to slide because the slide's broken, And you know,
31:19
that embarrasses me, I'll be honest with you, you know, And
31:22
so I think it's take us as duty to do what we can to get
31:26
these things fixed as soon as possible. We've been looking at some options,
31:30
but I think we're gonna make them look nice, you know. I don't
31:33
think it makes sense to put in new playgrounds that we're gonna have to replace
31:36
in five years. I mean, I think that's a waste of money.
31:37
So let's spend a little extra money now so we can have something nice for
31:41
the kids next, you know, twenty five, thirty years. But you
31:44
know, I think we're gonna have something that's really, really wonderful. I
31:47
think the community is gonna like it. I think the parents are gonna love
31:48
it. And it's just nice to do something for the kids. I mean,
31:52
we talk about all these events, making sure that kids are going out.
31:55
Look, I was a PlayStation kid myself, you know, but I
31:57
also went out. I went out on my bike, you know, went
32:00
to events, and my mom made sure that she was pulling them by the
32:02
ear taking me to go, you know, be exposed to the sun.
32:06
You know, technology is great, but we need to make sure that our
32:08
kids have opportunities to have all the experiences and having these parks that's going to
32:13
give it to them. And we just got so much going on. I
32:15
had Tim Brady on from the CVB yesterday and we were talking about all these
32:20
you know, you mentioned. We had the tour to cole in the Act
32:22
Fest this past weekend. We got Regatta coming up here in a couple of
32:23
weeks. Wine and jazz is going on this weekend. I'm going to talk
32:27
to Aaron. What about this Paco festival that they're doing in South Charleston.
32:30
I got the mayor of Clinton and an area I know that you like really
32:32
well, coming on the show tomorrow to talk about their summer festival. So
32:37
many things, yeah, going on, not only you know, close to
32:40
Charleston, but in the entire canal of Valley Dave, Let's talk about that
32:44
real quick. Okay, So when we talk about all these events going on,
32:46
something that I will say is that we, as the county, do
32:51
you need to do better? At the County Commission is our CVB? So
32:53
our CVB has been relatively inactive, and the City of Charleston's CVB has done
32:59
wonderful job. I mean it's making me jealous. I mean good for them.
33:01
I mean they've been wonderful getting all these big events in And so I
33:05
looked at it and said, well, what are we doing with our CVB.
33:07
Well, we're a little inactive on that, and so I said,
33:09
well, let's let's revamp this, let's remodel this, let's get this active
33:14
because we want to help the City of Charleston, but we also have responsibility
33:17
for the entire county, the town of Clinton, in the area of Tornado,
33:22
Saint Albans, eastern Connall County. You know, we have a responsibility.
33:25
City of Charleston's doing wonderful things. I've always said, great. You
33:30
know what great minds do day, they steal. I've never seen a great
33:32
idea I wouldn't steal and use for my own repurpose. It steal sounds better.
33:37
So we want to make sure that we're doing everything we can for the
33:39
CVB. We're going to get an executive director. We want to hire one.
33:43
Start looking out for somebody with those qualifications. Get that executive director doing
33:47
the things that we're doing here in Charleston, you know, county wide.
33:52
Because again with the hat Fa McCoy system, the trail system that's going to
33:55
be over in the town in Clindenon, I mean, let's talk about that.
33:58
You've got the gravity trails that the governor Jim Justice put two point three
34:01
million dollars that we're you know, working with them. One that's going to
34:05
be a I mean it's basically a ski slope for mountain bikes, which is
34:08
wonderful and scary for me at the age of thirty four at the same time.
34:13
But you know, I think that that's going to bring a lot of
34:15
people in here. We've got to market this. You know, we can
34:17
have the we can have all these fancy little trails and have all these wonderful
34:22
events, but unless we're marking this to people got to know about it.
34:24
People got to know about it. And that's the fastest way for all this
34:29
excitement we're doing in the county to die is the fact that we didn't market
34:31
it and it didn't have all that attention come to support these businesses. So
34:36
this CVB is going to get together. We're gonna I'm gonna be working with
34:39
them personally. We're going to get an executive director, we're going to get
34:42
an office, and we're going to start moving forward and start using some of
34:45
the CVB money to actually market to these events that are happening, these trails
34:51
that are happening, and get people here. You know, Potnam County,
34:53
let's bring them here to Connell County. Easy now, But well I can't.
34:59
We're a busy It helps us all, I mean, that's these things
35:01
we talk about this often time, and Tim brought that that point yesterday is
35:06
that when tourists come in, they don't care about city lines and county lines
35:09
and things like that. These people that came in, we got to go.
35:12
But these people that came in for the President's Cup, they didn't all
35:15
stay in an area around Dunbar and South Charlestow because there aren't enough rooms.
35:21
They were staying in Logan County. They were staying. And I talked to
35:23
I've told this story before a couple of years ago, having dinner in Galipoli,
35:27
Ohio, with some people that were in the area for an event at
35:30
Shawnee. That was the nearest hotel was in Gallipoli, Ohio. Let me
35:35
tell you a real story. Though grandparents came to see their kids at Shawnee
35:37
out of state came in. I think it's from Chicago, if I remember
35:39
the story correctly, came in from Chicago to Shawnee's either they said, you
35:44
know what, we love it here. They moved here. You live here
35:45
in Kennall County. Don't tell me that we're not moving people out of state
35:50
into in state in Kanaal County because of these events. And don't tell me
35:52
that these events aren't helping small businesses because we're seeing it. We got to
35:55
leave with there s nine forty three. Hey, commission Psident Lances Wheel,
35:59
There's always pleasure to have you on the show Man. Thanks for having me,
36:00

I'm loving this. Yes, yes, yes, fourteen away from ten special
38:55
Olympics and bodies. The true spirit of sportsmanship not merely about winning medals.
38:59
It's about being part of a team, practicing and competing together. The joy
39:02
and fulfillment derived from all of these experiences are measurable as athletes find their confidence
39:07
and self forth through the shared pursuit of victory. West Virginia Enriched in collaboration

Hopy comeing up TATO six with talk Line today. He's live on the
39:31
campus of West Virginia Wesley and A Mecanan as a West Virginia scholars will be
39:36
named. So that's comeing up at ten o six. I want to talk
39:39
with tacos and everything that goes along with Aaron Wood. It's here from Quantum
39:44
Rentals and Quantum Sports Fest and Talk Taco Fest this Thursday through Saturday at Oaksfield
39:47
in South Charleston. Aaron, good morning, Welcome back to the show.
39:51
Great, thanks for having me. Taco Fest, it just sounds good man.
39:54
Oh, it's gonna be awesome. It's going to be three days of
39:57
tacos, three days of fun. You know. We're gonna be a Oaks
40:00
Field in South Charleston on Thursday and Friday from five pm to ten pm,
40:04
and on Saturday from ten am to ten pm. We're gonna be serving a
40:08
delicious menu of tacos, margaritas, Sangria, Mexican beer. It's just gonna
40:15
be more of a international field event. I don't think we've ever had an
40:22
event like this in Charleston before. It's gonna be a true Latin American event.
40:25
We're gonna have a fire show, We're gonna have circus, we'll have
40:28
a carnival, We'll have inflatables, We'll have activities for the kids to make
40:32
flags from different countries and hanging them up, smacking down pinatas, playing soccer
40:38
out on the field. You know, it's just gonna be a fun day
40:42
for the whole family. Where did this whole idea come from? Well with
40:46
Quantum Sports. I run Quantum Sports and we have a large Latin American following
40:51
that come and play soccer at our facilities, and now I've got a large
40:54
amount of Latin American fellows that coach for me and then help me run the
40:58
facilities. So I started talking about the idea with them, and their eyes
41:02
just lit up. They were like excited about having a true Latin American festival
41:08
here in Charleston and something they can come and enjoy. And they all jumped
41:14
in said, we want to do this, we want to do that,
41:15
we want to plan this. They're all super excited. And I know you're
41:20
going to be relying on these people to help you pull this thing off,
41:22
because I know you've got a lot of volunteers and your folks will be there,
41:24
but you're going to have to have these folks who have experience and these
41:28
sort of things to kind of help out a little bit too. I would
41:30
imagine, oh, absolutely absolutely, they're going to be there helping run the
41:32
pinata contests, the flag making contests. You know, we're going to do
41:37
a scavenger hunt for the kids. It's really going to be a true Latin
41:40
American type festival. And I want to talk about the food, because it
41:45
always goes back to the food for me. Man, if you haven't If
41:46
anybody listened to the show the last four years, they know that always goes
41:50
back to the food. Tacos. And even I was talking to Commission President
41:52
Wheeler there, you know, I mean, is there anybody that doesn't like
41:55
tacos? I mean, you know, and there's so many different varieties other
41:59
than just Taco Bell, with all due respect to Taco Bell, which I
42:00
love, There's so many different varieties out there available. Oh yeah, and
42:05
I think my friend Abetto Torres, who owns the Mexican restaurants Arocas and Margarita's
42:09
and Huntington, his staff has done a fabulous job on putting together a menu
42:15
that, you know, I think will satisfy everyone. They've got all kinds
42:20
of different beef tacos, pork tacos, chicken tacos, shrimp tacos, they've
42:24
got vegetarian tacos. They've got some of the cool trendy tacos that are going
42:30
on right now around the country. So it's really a menu that is going
42:32
to satisfy everyone. And talk about the drinks, he said, you got
42:36
Margarita's, you got Sangreas, you got all that stuff. Oh yeah,
42:38
So Rocas will be serving the margaritas on the rocks. We will have eleven
42:45
different flavors of frozen margaritas, from cranberry to pineapple, to BlackBerry, to
42:51
blueberry to lime. You can actually take those eleven flavors and make over a
42:57
thousand different combinations for combinations of margarita's at our event. I saw that in
43:02
one of your social media posts, over eleven thousand different varieties of margarita's,
43:07
over over a thousand, five thousand. There's eleven flavors. Eleven flavors.
43:12
Okay, you could make a cranberry mango, BlackBerry margarita. You could make
43:16
a lime, mango, pineapple margarita. You know, there's all kinds of
43:22
different flavors and combinations when you're talking about that many different flavors of a frozen
43:25
margarita. Now, do you still have room if somebody wants to be a
43:28
food vendor or if they want to bring a truck out? I mean,
43:30
if you do, you do you have room for that? Or are you
43:32
or any community group or are we pretty much full at this point? Well,
43:36
if you're a community group and like to come out and sit up,
43:38
we have room for you. Rocas is taking care of all the food,
43:42
so we don't we don't have any more room for any more food vendors,
43:45
and we're taking care of the drinks. If you have a business you'd like
43:47
to promote, give us a message on our Facebook page Taco Fest if you
43:52
search it for it on Facebook at South Charleston Taco Fest. Send us a
43:57
private message and we'll be happy to get you into the festival. It's going
44:00
to be, i think, a great and a unique thing. And you're
44:01
starting on Thursday, and again the hours are Thursday, which is West Virginia
44:07
Day, so a lot of people are going to have the day off on
44:07
Thursday five to ten, Friday five to ten, then Saturday all day ten
44:13
to ten. And of course the heat is going to be a thing over
44:15
the next couple of days, but you have plenty of non alcoholic beverages to
44:20
keep people hydrated as well. I'm sure, Oh absolutely, coke. We'll
44:22
be bringing in a trailer of coke and coke products for us to serve.
44:28
We're gonna have two eight foot porticoles to help cool everybody down. We'll have
44:34
several missing fans throughout the event. We're actually probably gonna add a water ride
44:39
or two on the inflatables so the kids can go down the water slide.
44:43
So we'll have plenty of things there to keep everybody cool for the festival.
44:46
All right, now, give us that Facebook page again where people can follow
44:50
along and learn more. If you want to search it on Facebook. You
44:52
go to South Charleston Taco Fests. Okay, Aaron from Quantum Reynolds and Quantum
44:58
Sports Center. Always a pleasure to have you on. It's the Taco Festival.
45:00
It's Thursday through Saturday, Oaksfield in South Charleston. Best of luck with

bit, you know, yesterday afternoon, just you know, doing like people
50:08
do, you know, when you're supposed to be working, scrolling through social
50:12
media, and I saw people were sharing that this guy was making some very
50:17
vague Facebook post about his time on Earth coming to an end. I don't
50:22
know the gentleman. I just saw what was being posted and then said,
50:27
gentleman is alleged to have gone on a shooting spree. Now the shot,
50:30
well, the shots definitely happened, we know that, and they were allegedly
50:36
fired around the Cross Lanes area and also in the Jefferson Road area. Police
50:40
were able to apprehend the guy using spike strips out on one nineteen Corridor Janior
