- Luna: Welcome back to Learn Swahili with Fexingo! I'm Luna, and here with me is the amazing Lucas. Lucas: Hey everyone! Ready for some more Swahili? I've been thinking about something fun today. Luna: Ooh, what's that? Lucas: Well, we've learned greetings and numbers and how to introduce ourselves. So today, let's talk about family. Luna: Family! That's sweet. Like how to say 'mom' and 'dad'? Lucas: Exactly. We'll start with the basics. The word for mother in Swahili is 'mama'. Luna: Mama. That sounds just like English! Lucas: It does, right? It's almost the same. Say it with me: mama. Luna: Mama. Lucas: Perfect. And father is 'baba'. Luna: Baba. Like Baba Yaga? That's cool. Lucas: Exactly! In Swahili, 'baba' just means dad. So you can say 'baba yangu' — my father. Luna: Baba yangu. That's easy. Lucas: Now, what about child? That's 'mtoto'. Luna: Mtoto. M-to-to. That's a bit trickier. Lucas: Try it slowly: m-to-to. Luna: Mtoto. Lucas: Beautiful. So we have mama, baba, mtoto. Let's put them in a sentence. If you want to say 'This is my mother', you say 'Huyu ni mama yangu'. Luna: Huyu ni mama yangu. Hmm, 'huyu' means 'this'? Lucas: Yeah, for a person. 'Huyu' is 'this one' when referring to a person. So 'Huyu ni mama yangu' — this is my mother. Luna: Huyu ni mama yangu. Lucas: And 'Huyu ni baba yangu' — this is my father. Luna: Huyu ni baba yangu. Lucas: You're a natural. Let's do a quick practice. I'll say a sentence, and you repeat. 'Huyu ni mama yangu.' Luna: Huyu ni mama yangu. Lucas: 'Huyu ni baba yangu.' Luna: Huyu ni baba yangu. Lucas: Great. Now let's imagine we're looking at a photo. Luna, point to someone and say 'Huyu ni mama yangu'. Luna: Okay. Huyu ni mama yangu. And that's my dad? Huyu ni baba yangu. Lucas: Exactly! And if you see a kid, you can say 'Huyu ni mtoto wangu' — this is my child. Luna: Huyu ni mtoto wangu. But careful, 'wangu' for child? Lucas: Ah, good catch. For 'mama' and 'baba', we say 'yangu'. For 'mtoto', it's 'wangu'. So: 'mtoto wangu'. Luna: Mtoto wangu. Got it. Lucas: Let's practice all three. Repeat after me: Huyu ni mama yangu. Luna: Huyu ni mama yangu. Lucas: Huyu ni baba yangu. Luna: Huyu ni baba yangu. Lucas: Huyu ni mtoto wangu. Luna: Huyu ni mtoto wangu. Lucas: Perfect. Now, let's do a tiny dialogue. I'll be a friend showing you a photo. I say: 'Huyu ni mama yangu.' You respond: 'Nafurahi kukuona.' Remember that from episode 9? Luna: Oh yes! 'Nice to meet you.' So: Nafurahi kukuona. Lucas: Exactly. Let's try it. 'Huyu ni mama yangu.' Luna: Nafurahi kukuona, mama. Lucas: Aww, that's so polite! You can say 'Nafurahi kukuona' to the person you're meeting. Luna: So if I meet your dad, I say 'Nafurahi kukuona, baba'. Lucas: Exactly. Let's run through one more time. I'll say the Swahili, you repeat. Mama. Luna: Mama. Lucas: Baba. Luna: Baba. Lucas: Mtoto. Luna: Mtoto. Lucas: Huyu ni mama yangu. Luna: Huyu ni mama yangu. Lucas: Huyu ni baba yangu. Luna: Huyu ni baba yangu. Lucas: Huyu ni mtoto wangu. Luna: Huyu ni mtoto wangu. Lucas: You did amazing today. Remember, you can practice this with your own family photos. Luna: Yeah! And if you have a pet, you could even say 'Huyu ni mtoto wangu' for your fur baby. Lucas: True! But technically 'mtoto' means child, not animal. But for fun, why not? Luna: Works for me. Thanks, Lucas! And thank you, listeners, for joining us on Learn Swahili with Fexingo. Lucas: Keep practicing, and we'll see you next time. Kwaheri! Luna: Kwaheri! Tutaonana baadaye!
