- 0:00You're listening to Beyond the Sermon Podcast, a First
- 0:03Methodist Church in Collingswood, NJ.
- 0:05On our podcast, the goal is not just to share the sermons we've
- 0:08preached, but to go beyond the sermon and talk about what we're
- 0:11learning and what God is doing in US and in our community.
- 0:15Week 2 of the game and let the church say Christians should
- 0:23only get married in a church building.
- 0:28And I rebuke that. However, I do think it should be
- 0:32a pastor who marries them. I'm also going to rebuke that
- 0:38I'm I'm biblically. I don't have a case for having
- 0:42to be in a church building. No, because there's no church
- 0:46and. And where is a wedding ever like
- 0:49really described in the Bible? It's it's never.
- 0:52So cultural. Yeah, yeah.
- 0:55I think there's there's a holiness to doing a covenant
- 0:59before God and his house, but it's not a requirement.
- 1:03But it's not the whole earth, The Lord and the fullness
- 1:06thereof. Yeah.
- 1:07Yeah, yeah. But then can you get married
- 1:09virtually? Because it's the commitment and.
- 1:12Why I never said? That why not in the whole world,
- 1:17all the realms? He knows your hearts and the
- 1:21commitment you're making. No, no, no.
- 1:24It's got to be in person. Oh, now it's got to be in
- 1:27person. That's a strong stance to take.
- 1:29You want that to be public now? Yeah, You have to get married in
- 1:33person. Sacraments happen, and I mean,
- 1:38as Protestants we don't actually believe that.
- 1:40To say whoa. I'd go that.
- 1:46Far marriage is a sacrament you heard it here first people
- 1:54we're. Not there yet.
- 1:58I didn't say that we're a part of it, but.
- 2:01I don't. I didn't say that either.
- 2:04That's the implication you took away from it.
- 2:06Scott. That sounds like a you problem
- 2:08and a me leaving it in. Problem.
- 2:11Yeah, you. Isn't it in that's a problem,
- 2:13that's what I'm saying. Oh man, well let me see what I
- 2:18got on my handy dandy notes from yesterday's sermon.
- 2:22It's not much, but one of the first things that you made the
- 2:25clarification of when God spoke to you after your night of binge
- 2:30watching and drinking after your tough day, right?
- 2:34I think the drinking was also implied.
- 2:37It certainly wasn't said. But it should have been is the
- 2:43the difference between you were seeking relief when you needed
- 2:48restoration. Where have you sought the
- 2:55restoration instead of the relief?
- 2:59Can you give us a practical, intentional time where you
- 3:03desired relief but you sought after restoration?
- 3:08What did that look like? Like a concrete example?
- 3:15Just yeah. Because if we're supposed to
- 3:18turn from right the one and seek the other, what does that look
- 3:21like? It's not that every time we seek
- 3:24restoration it's going to be a formulaic thing, but do you have
- 3:28an example of a time where instead of going the easy route
- 3:32that would temporarily subside, that you saw what you needed?
- 3:39I mean, it's not like a big exciting answer, but I think I'd
- 3:44point just to Sunday afternoon. Got home, was doing some things,
- 3:49working on some other stuff, blah, blah, blah.
- 3:53Hit a point where I found myself just, I don't know, distracting
- 3:58myself because I knew I was tired and I didn't really have a
- 4:06lot of capacity. And so I, I chose intentionally
- 4:11to go do a little bit of reading so I could fall asleep, like
- 4:16with the goal of falling asleep. And was that like a big moment
- 4:22with God? No.
- 4:25But was it getting at what I really needed?
- 4:28Yes. And that's something that I
- 4:32think God's been working on me about is actually choosing rest
- 4:39even when there's, you know, any number of other things that I
- 4:45could be doing, but allowing myself to rest, trusting that
- 4:51he's still working even when I'm not, you know, some of those
- 4:55Sabbath themes. And so I think that's that's
- 5:01probably the most recent. Example for sure Yeah, well,
- 5:06that's good. Jeremy, what about you?
- 5:09Are there any times that usually crust or a shirt instead of
- 5:12relief That's a. Terrible.
- 5:13Question. I wasn't expecting that.
- 5:21All that time to think while I was thinking.
- 5:25No, I'll say there's there's been times, I think pivotal
- 5:31moments in my life and specifically and the life of
- 5:38Rebecca and I together where whether it be a job change, a
- 5:43job opportunity, miscarriage, whatever it may be, where it
- 5:49brings us to our knees and prayer together before the Lord,
- 5:53where it could be a let's distract, let's relieve, let's
- 6:00you know, whatever it may be with, I don't know, drink,
- 6:04friendships, entertainment, spa days, like whatever it could be
- 6:11to try and soothe whatever else is going on in our minds, which
- 6:16is going before the Lord together has been some of the
- 6:20most beautiful moments in our marriage.
- 6:24But to have that be at some of the hardest times within the
- 6:30marriage also be the most beautiful times because it
- 6:36provided what only God could provide and that our marriage
- 6:39couldn't do on its own. Sure.
- 6:41Yeah. And there are any number of
- 6:42other times where I've been stressed about life
- 6:46circumstances or whatever and the choice to pick up my guitar
- 6:52and sing some worship, play some worship.
- 6:56Or other times where what the invitation has a war.
- 7:02What I know that I is just to get outside alone with God, some
- 7:06solitude, but doing something, not just the solitude of sitting
- 7:12alone on a park bench or something, but, you know, doing
- 7:16some hike, kayak, something like that.
- 7:19Definitely times that God is used to restore my soul.
- 7:23For sure. And IA book I'm reading for one
- 7:27of my classes is called Sacred Rhythms by Ruth Haley Barton.
- 7:33Yeah, I think. Familiar with that one?
- 7:36And love it. First off, she's great.
- 7:39Books great. And my my professor is great
- 7:43because I've now had this professor twice and she always
- 7:47sneaks an assignment in that may not connect with the class, but
- 7:53it's almost to force you to get time with God during the
- 7:57semester. So really caring for the
- 8:00students. And this is that book for sure.
- 8:03And so it kind of talks about sacred rhythms, solitary being
- 8:11one of them, listening to your body, encompassing body, mind
- 8:14and soul and relationship with God and connecting on the past
- 8:18couple of examples you've you've given.
- 8:21And so, yeah, even the other night I just went for a walk.
- 8:24It was beautiful night. It was me.
- 8:27If you know me, it's not hard to imagine shorts while there was
- 8:31still like 7 inches of snow on the ground.
- 8:34I went, I sat on a bench at Newton Lake Park and I was just
- 8:38like, I'm just going to shut up and focus on God and sound like
- 8:43a good like 2025 minutes out there.
- 8:45And yeah, God definitely met me in that moment.
- 8:49Yeah, it was just nice to be restored.
- 8:53It was, I forget what it was. It was like what something in
- 8:57the solitary practice of let God bring up the topic kind of in a
- 9:03sense. Oh, yeah.
- 9:04Like the to figure out what's really on your heart, even if
- 9:06you aren't like hyper aware of it on your heart.
- 9:10And so I'm just sitting there and looking at these geese
- 9:14sitting on the ice while the fountains going on and the
- 9:16lights and everything at night. And it's just like, OK, God,
- 9:21what's on my heart. And I was just getting very
- 9:25humbled. But moving on, one of the things
- 9:30that your sermon made me think of as you're talking about how
- 9:34we navigate to other people's convictions and how they live
- 9:40out their faith and in relation to God and how you may have
- 9:44certain freedoms, but that doesn't mean you should like
- 9:46kind of flaunt it or poo poo others that aren't living in
- 9:49that freedom. It's like the first time that
- 9:52you're at a friend's house and their house has different rules
- 9:56than your own. Yeah.
- 9:57And so I'm wondering, what's your first memory of recognizing
- 10:02that other houses have different rules than your own?
- 10:07First memory. It was.
- 10:09Probably, gosh, I probably wasn't a very old kid at this
- 10:14point, but growing up we never had cable.
- 10:20We never had a video game console of any kind.
- 10:25We did have ATV with rabbit ear kind of yeah antenna.
- 10:29I'm familiar. I studied the Great Depression.
- 10:31Yeah. And we did.
- 10:33We did have computers and eventually, you know, got the
- 10:37Internet. When that was rolling out, he
- 10:39had computer. Sands Internet, Yeah.
- 10:43Yeah, yeah, yeah. Just what played checkers no use
- 10:48the calculator app. Oregon Trail.
- 10:53Yeah, OK, the original entertainment.
- 10:57I mean, eventually, but anyway, I remember going to my cousin's
- 11:05house and they had all the things, you know, they had the
- 11:09Nintendo and cable. And what sticks in my mind is
- 11:15when they got Sega Genesis. For those that don't know, a
- 11:20Sega Genesis was a video game console back in the 70s.
- 11:25Yes, if you've ever seen Sonic the Hedgehog.
- 11:28Originally. Was, you know, debuted on the
- 11:32Sega. Yeah.
- 11:33So I was hanging out with my cousin who's just a few months
- 11:36older than me, and he's just like, hey, you want to go?
- 11:40Let's go do this. I was like, don't we need to ask
- 11:43somebody? Like, it's like, no, I was just
- 11:48like, I can do whatever you want in this house.
- 11:52So yeah, that would be one of those small things that sticks
- 11:56in my head of like, oh, not everyone has the same level of
- 12:03strictness about some of these things.
- 12:05Oh yeah, my household does. I went to a neighbor's house at
- 12:09six, and it was like, no afternoon after school.
- 12:12And it's like, oh, yeah, I got this cool movie.
- 12:15And it was Blade, for those that don't know, the vampire hunter.
- 12:20Yeah. And it was the opening scene
- 12:22where there's like this dance club and you don't know that
- 12:25they're all vampires. Wesley Snipes.
- 12:28Yeah, Wesley Snipes. And then the sprinkler system
- 12:33comes on and it's blood and they're drinking blood, and then
- 12:37the Vampire Slayer comes in with the sword and starts killing all
- 12:40these vampires. I was like I was just graduated
- 12:44to PG movies. I don't know that I should watch
- 12:48in this one now. I'm now watching.
- 12:50Oh gosh, I remember watching The Shining at somebody's house.
- 12:53Too. Oh yeah, when you were young.
- 12:54Yeah, yeah, yeah. From church.
- 12:58Of course. Who had us over and as the TV
- 13:02version, you know. OK, that does help.
- 13:04It does, especially with The Shining.
- 13:05Yeah, yeah. But still.
- 13:07Yeah, I had nightmares for a while.
- 13:10Yeah, from that one. Yeah.
- 13:12And then even some things that like, I think it's once you're
- 13:15branching out of your own, the world your parents have created
- 13:20of like, I assumed all pancakes were good and we.
- 13:24I know. And traumatizing, yes.
- 13:26How to sleep over in middle school.
- 13:28She's like, ohh, how many pancakes do you want?
- 13:31I was like, I'm a grown boy, 3-4.
- 13:34That'll start me off. Yeah.
- 13:36And then a guy took my first one.
- 13:37I was like this is. Horrible.
- 13:39No more. How do I How do I She already
- 13:42had three on the plate like I was already set for the three.
- 13:45I was like mitted. I have to eat these now.
- 13:48Who knew you could mess up pancakes?
- 13:50And then I would just started feeling bad for my friend.
- 13:52I was like, is this all he thinks pancakes are?
- 13:57It was, it was so horrible. I felt so bad.
- 14:00It was all those things that like even within the churches
- 14:03that you grew up and you assume, well, yeah, maybe people in the
- 14:06world. But then like if you're in the
- 14:08church, then you obviously have these same limitations or
- 14:12guidelines within the household. And that's not.
- 14:15So. Always, Yeah, that's not always
- 14:18the case. Like I neighbors who Christian
- 14:20family, different house in different church and it's like
- 14:25they lived on the corner of the street and we'd play kickball
- 14:27all the time. They weren't allowed to go on
- 14:29the street to get the ball. I'm assuming now as an adult,
- 14:32parents probably knew someone that got hit by a car or
- 14:34whatever it might be and more sensitive to that.
- 14:37But then they'd always have to go knock on the door and get
- 14:40someone to go get the ball. And I was like, I'm the cool
- 14:43kid. I can just go get it myself.
- 14:44So then I was the one who always getting the ball.
- 14:46But then it's like super strict there.
- 14:49But then your parents let you listen to Green Day, what kind
- 14:53of messed up household it is. You can't get the ball, but you
- 14:56can be, you know, impressioned by the American idiot.
- 15:00Yeah. And so it's it's one of those
- 15:02things of as you're talking about in your in your sermon,
- 15:04you're preaching about meeting everyone out of love where they
- 15:09are now. And it's hard to do as an adult,
- 15:12let alone to teach in and still to kids as they prepare to go
- 15:16out into the world. Lastly, I wanted to touch on
- 15:21we're talking about if everything we say do think to be
- 15:25glorifying to God and time out even within our entertainment.
- 15:29If someone's seeking to glorify God even through the median
- 15:35entertainment that they consume, how do you know if a book, show,
- 15:39or movie is glorifying to God? I think that's like where Paul
- 15:46in those Corinthians passages is talking about conscience.
- 15:51You know, not quite Jiminy Cricket, always let your
- 15:54conscience be your guide. But almost, you know, I think
- 15:59God speaks to us in our consciences and has has shaped
- 16:05our consciences. And hopefully as we grow in
- 16:09holiness and in the process of sanctification, you know, he's
- 16:14refining that conscience more and more.
- 16:17So I think that's probably the primary way that I would judge
- 16:22it. You know, I'd read the the books
- 16:26behind the series that was Game of Thrones and felt fine reading
- 16:33the books first started watching the series and the very first
- 16:40scene is very naked people right from the get go and is yeah, I
- 16:48got like 10 seconds into that. I was like, no, this isn't for
- 16:51me. And and there are other things I
- 16:54have no problem watching. You know that.
- 16:56Also have a bunch of naked women at brothels.
- 16:58No, but but other things that people might say, like is that
- 17:03really, you know, should a Christian really watch that?
- 17:06You know, like I don't have a blanket rule for myself about R
- 17:11rated movies. It goes back to just do you feel
- 17:17peace watching it or is there something in you that says if if
- 17:26Pastor Scott, Pastor Jeremy walked in, would I invite them
- 17:30to sit down and watch with me? You know as.
- 17:32Long as you got good food. I mean, but and I mean, that's
- 17:38kind of like a silly thing, but but I think that, you know, if
- 17:43Jesus walked in, yeah, that that doesn't seem quite as realistic.
- 17:46But you know, if somebody, grandma, yeah, somebody from
- 17:49church walked in and saw you watching it, would you feel like
- 17:53you needed to shut it off real quick or come up with a story to
- 17:57cover up why you were watching it or something Like I don't.
- 18:00Know how I ended up six seasons deep?
- 18:02Exactly, exactly. It's going to be different for
- 18:06each person. Like it's different for me than
- 18:09it is for Meg. There are some things I have no
- 18:12problem watching, she said. I don't really want to watch it.
- 18:15For a while we were watching. It was Criminal Minds.
- 18:19Oh yeah. TV show back probably 1520 years
- 18:23ago. Yeah.
- 18:24And it's the team of criminal profilers for the FBI and.
- 18:30And we had a point where it's like this is just, it's a little
- 18:33too dark. It's a little too real.
- 18:37I don't know what exactly it was, but we just, we decided and
- 18:40we were like four or five. It dropped after season 4, so
- 18:45you're fine. Seasons in and and we just, we
- 18:49just decided to stop watching because it didn't sit right
- 18:51anymore. Yeah.
- 18:53Yeah, anything you'd add? Yeah, I, I would say I I've
- 18:56found in my I like it would be drastically different from me
- 19:01for better, for worse. So like growing up, it was PG,
- 19:06if the parent guided, then you could.
- 19:09And then when you turn 13, PG 13 and then, yeah.
- 19:14And so once, once I was able to pirate films and TV shows on my
- 19:22own devices, floodgates open. I was watching everything I I
- 19:26possibly could. That's how I got into horror
- 19:28movies and zombie movies and everything else.
- 19:31And so my high school years, I was everything I could, I could
- 19:38watch to the point I was watching, I think like on
- 19:41average two or three movies a day.
- 19:44Yeah, which like I could have been an A student now that I
- 19:48think about, but I, I was just so and, and primarily in the
- 19:54world of horror and zombie movies specifically.
- 19:57And then I got into college and it was like.
- 20:00The horror stuff, like I don't get a thrill out of it anymore.
- 20:03So like, let me try and find the worst films available so I can
- 20:09feel that edge and that intensity that I once had with
- 20:12horror movies that leads you down some super messed up rabbit
- 20:16holes. So I've I've seen the worst
- 20:21commercial films, right? There's, there's people that
- 20:24watch like actual murders and that kind of stuff and whatever,
- 20:27really dark stuff. But luckily Rebecca is way more
- 20:31of an innocent person than myself.
- 20:34And I also just wasn't in the same circles.
- 20:37And I was also growing in my walk with God.
- 20:39And so over the years, I've been able to use those experiences
- 20:45and times to connect with certain people and be able to
- 20:48open up conversations about faith.
- 20:50And so God's used that time, but I like, he's also taken away the
- 20:56taste and desire for those things.
- 21:00So like, I can now connect with teenagers that are really into
- 21:03horror movies and whatever. And I I still enjoy.
- 21:07The only, almost only time you're ever going to hear Psalm
- 21:1023 read in a secular context is in a horror movie.
- 21:15Yeah. It's just one of those things
- 21:17where it just it's not appetizing anymore.
- 21:21And I think that's due to just deeper relationship with God and
- 21:26having more of a taste and desire for what he desires and
- 21:30loves. And so yeah, that's why for me,
- 21:32it's it's I will never judge anyone for whatever they watch
- 21:36because I guarantee you I've seen worse.
- 21:39But it also is the, yes, it may be good film technically, it may
- 21:46be good storytelling and the way it functions, it may be really
- 21:51great graphics and designs and characters in character
- 21:54building, But that doesn't mean it's necessarily good for you.
- 22:01And I think the more you desire good for you will lead you into
- 22:07better entertainment choices. And that's where for me, like
- 22:12things that maybe I'm not the biggest fan of, I'll watch in
- 22:16community the people similar to like what Paul's talking about.
- 22:21We're like my friends from college when we get together and
- 22:23they have a movie that maybe I wouldn't watch normally now, but
- 22:27it gives us a connection point and a starting point for
- 22:29conversations and relationship building.
- 22:32Like, I'm not, I'm not opposed to that at all, but it's not the
- 22:36I wouldn't go for for relief and definitely not for restoration.
- 22:40Yeah. Yeah.
- 22:41Yeah, it's like Paul's talking about when he says, yeah, all
- 22:44things are. I have a right to do anything.
- 22:47Not everything's beneficial. Right.
- 22:49Just. You get to a point with some
- 22:51things where it's just like, I don't know, this is really
- 22:56adding anything to my. Life.
- 22:59Yeah. And that's, I think the more you
- 23:03face mortality and get comfortable with that, you
- 23:09realize that there's only so much time.
- 23:12You don't know how much time there is.
- 23:15Are you going to, you know, well, all my free time in the
- 23:19last three weeks was stuff that didn't benefit me or anyone
- 23:22else. And then it's done and now, you
- 23:26know, I don't know. I feel like there's so many
- 23:29things that are available to us at all times that can benefit
- 23:34ourselves, our relationship with God and with others that are
- 23:38worth investing in. Well, that's our conversation
- 23:42for today, but that doesn't mean the conversation is over.
- 23:46We'd love to hear your thoughts on these topics as well.
- 23:49To ask a question about anything we've discussed in this episode
- 23:51or to join the conversation, you can head over to

- 24:00conversation.
