- 2:49joined by a cast of by looking at the green room. Against of thousands
- 2:52here we got David Payne, Lieutenant David Paine from the Charleston Police Department.
- 2:54John Brown some others are going to be able to talk about the fourth Annuel
- 2:58Charleston Police Departments went ure Wonderland toy drive. That's going to be actually kick
- 3:04it off, I guess during Holly Jolly Brawley, and we're going to talk
- 3:07to them about that. Plus is always your calls and text are welcome.
- 3:10Let's talk some business now. I want to welcome and Ashley offered Glance,
- 3:13who is executive director of the Putnam County Chamber of Commerce. Good morning,
- 3:16miss offered Glance. Good morning Dave. How you doing and find happy belated
- 3:22birthday by the way, Oh, thank you, thank you. Hearing much.
- 3:24Seems like just last year you had one. It was not that long
- 3:28ago. Y. Yeah. Well, a happy early Thanksgiving to you and
- 3:30the family and everybody there at the Chamber as well. Thank you, thank
- 3:35you you as well. Now, before we get to Thanksgiving to Black Friday,
- 3:38I want to talk about several things with you. Overall, what's been
- 3:42going on at Putnam County from a business perspective, overall, everything's going really
- 3:46great here in Putnam County. We've got new businesses opening every week. It
- 3:50is our favorite time of year where we like to encourage people to shop small
- 3:53during the holiday season. We have so many great locally owned restaurants, boutiques
- 4:00all that. So we you know, we've got a lot going on.
- 4:03We've got some holiday campaigns going on, and you know, a lot,
- 4:09just a lot. The area's growing, it is. Indeed, I saw
- 4:12where some some groups have gotten together over there, I guess last week or
- 4:16in the recent pass there and did a sort of a of a welcome to
- 4:20town event for the families that are moving in for new course Steel. Oh
- 4:25sure, absolutely so we we we are always excited to have new residents join
- 4:30us here in Punnham County, and so we just like to make sure that
- 4:33they feel welcome and that their transition here to being a new West Virginia residents
- 4:39is as seamless as possible. So anything that we can do to assist them
- 4:42in their transition, that's what we're here to do. Love seeing people moving
- 4:46into the area, you know, whether it's Putnham County where both you and
- 4:48I live, or Canais or just get here. Did we need yeah,
- 4:53just come. Obviously we love them to pick Putnham County, but you know,
- 4:58there are other great place of the state to live as well, but
- 5:00none as good as Putnam County though. That's what I mean, I am
- 5:04biased as I want to talk a little bit about Black Friday and in small
- 5:10business Saturday. What's on the agenda this year? Sure? Sure, sure,
- 5:14So you know, Black Friday is obviously one of the largest shopping days
- 5:16of the year, and a lot of our lovely owned businesses will be open
- 5:23on Black Frinday as well, offering deals and specials. But but the but
- 5:27the super Bowl of small businesses on Saturday, Shop Small Saturday, and all
- 5:32of our locally owned businesses will be open and you'll be able to go there
- 5:36and get gifts for anyone on your list. We have everything you know you
- 5:44can. You can absolutely shop small for your holidays this this season here in
- 5:49Kunham County. And you can start. I mean, I'll just kind of
- 5:53focus on Tays Valley for a moment. Of course, you know there's a
- 5:55whole lot more than just Tay's Valley, but but I'll start with there.
- 5:58I mean, you could start at one end of Tays Valley, maybe just
- 6:00off the Tay's Valley exit and uh uh and just and go straight all the
- 6:04way down into Hurricane and stop it. I don't know. I mean,
- 6:06I don't even know how many businesses are there. I mean and again locally
- 6:10owned and operated businesses absolutely, you know. And you can even start as
- 6:15far as Poka. There's a peak over in PoCA in the Poker shopping plaza,
- 6:19so you can even you can even start as far as if you're if
- 6:23you're not from Putnam County, or even if you are, you can start
- 6:26on one end of sixty four there and make your way all the way through.
- 6:30You know, I've actually never counted how many businesses we have along Tays
- 6:34Valley Road. Uh that that that you could shop at on Saturday. I
- 6:40was actually telling somebody earlier. You know, it used to be here in
- 6:44Pundham County that on shops on on Saturday, I could go out and you
- 6:47know, make an actual stop at every one of our businesses that was open.
- 6:51But now there's there's too many. There would be no way I couldn't
- 6:56do it. So there's gonna be some really great things going on. But
- 7:00like Dave, like you said, yes, you can start on one side
- 7:01of the valley and go all the way through down to main Street and then
- 7:05hit some of our other areas as well. We've got some great, great
- 7:10things over in Winfield. We've got some great places in PoCA. So if
- 7:15you're just looking for unique things that you might not find, you know,
- 7:18elsewhere, feel free to give us a call at the Chamber. We can
- 7:23obviously make recommendations, but you can also visit Puttenham County dot org slash holidays
- 7:29and that will send you to a list of all the places you should be
- 7:32shopping this weekend at that website again for us Putnam County dot org splash Holidays.
- 7:38That's good stuff. Again, we're talking without Ashley Offered Glances, Executive
- 7:41director of the Putnam County Chamber of Commerce, and also understand there's some big
- 7:45things going on at Valley Park as well. Yeah, absolutely so. Well,
- 7:48there's a couple of different outside of our traditional brick and mortars that are
- 7:53going to be open, you know, our boutiques and all of that.
- 7:57There are going to be some shop small Saturday pop up so people that are
- 8:01home based businesses that don't have a traditional storefront, they're going to be out
- 8:05on Saturday as well. So we actually have one pop up here at Area
- 8:07thirty four. It's going to have seventeen vendors in it. Down at Valley
- 8:13Park there's going to be a ven there's a shop Small Saturday event that has
- 8:18sixty vendors. And then also down at social Events based on Main Street actually
- 8:22Deal there's the new one of our newest event venues here in Hutton County.
- 8:26She is hosting a shop Small Saturday event with some vendors as well. So
- 8:31and I might have missed one another, I might have missed one. I'm
- 8:35not sure if there's anything going on as a garage or not. Sometimes they'll
- 8:37do things. But but yeah, so not only will we have our traditional
- 8:41businesses that are open, but we'll have some of our artisans and home based
- 8:45businesses out and about as well. And what I like about these things,
- 8:50Ashley, is these are buy and large things that you can't get on Amazon.
- 8:54You know, you're not going to go to a to a big box
- 8:56store and be able to find these things. That's what I'll love about them
- 9:00is these are truly truly to use the tired advertising cliche that we've used forever
- 9:05in radio and television and print is it's it's truly one of the kind stuff,
- 9:11unique gifts that you can't get anywhere else. Absolutely, And if you
- 9:13have people that are you know, you don't know, you know, you
- 9:16want to get them something nice. There's nothing better than you can do than
- 9:20to give them something, something that's locally made, that reminds you know,
- 9:24that reminds you of them. And so when you're out, you know,
- 9:28you can do jewelry, you can do soaps, you can do. It
- 9:31doesn't have to be, you know, something something big and glamorous. It
- 9:35can it can honestly be something you know that they can enjoy every single day
- 9:41and that was made here locally in Putnam County or in West Virginia. Is
- 9:46my girl Connie there at Putnam Provisions at Area thirty four. She's gonna be
- 9:50serving up coffee on Saturday, she is. Yeah, So we're having a
- 9:52shop small Saturday vendor event here and so Connie will be here and Putnam Provisions
- 9:56will be open. We have uh we have a packed house for that event.
- 10:03It'll go on from nine until two, I believe. But yeah,
- 10:09Connie will be open so you can come and get caffeinated at Putnam Provisions.
- 10:13Uh. Any she has every everything you could possibly want as far as the
- 10:18local local coffee shop. UH serve they've got it all and and so she'll
- 10:26be open and then we'll have the we'll have Area thirty four Patchful Avengers as
- 10:28well some of our other chamber members that are local local artisans like the Doodle
- 10:33and Rue and regarding a Jewelry and a few others. So so yeah,
- 10:39you're not gonna want to miss it. There there will be if you don't
- 10:43get your shopping done on Saturday. Get your I mean, I wasn't gonna
- 10:48be that harsh, but but that's but that's the gist of it. You
- 10:52know, I actually already started, so uh here in Putnam Provisions in Area
- 10:56thirty four, a lot of our we have a lot of our art that
- 11:01you can get their stuff every day here, and so I have actually already
- 11:05started because I didn't want to miss you know, yeah, I didn't want
- 11:09to miss the good. I get it, I get it, I get
- 11:11And I'll close with this. You mentioned about new businesses opening up every week
- 11:16in Putnam County. It seems like every time I turn around, I'm getting
- 11:20an invite from you folks to come to a ribbon cutting or whatever. I
- 11:24hear that we got a new steakhouse, an Italian restaurant that's going to be
- 11:28opening. I think original plan was Monday. Don't have an update on that.
- 11:31Sergio's which is on Main Street in Hurricane, that's the former Connelly's Irish
- 11:35publication. I think they're going to be opening up hopefully Monday. If not
- 11:39then then soon. Always great to have another locally owned, locally owned eatery
- 11:45in Putnam County. Absolutely, you know, Sergio's is opening, you know,
- 11:50hopefully next week. We'll do the grand opening a little bit later.
- 11:54But he did take over the old Connolly's and he if you guys have been
- 11:58to Guadalajara, Modern Mexican, Sergio is also the owner of that and he
- 12:03is a phenomenal business owner here in Pennam County. He's got some great ideas
- 12:11and I can't wait to see Sergio's open. Everyone always asks for a steakhouse.
- 12:15Well here it is, guys. It's going to be open soon.
- 12:18So on Main Street and Hurricane in the old Connolly's location. So Italian and
- 12:24Italian and steaks. That's, I mean, two of my favorite things in
- 12:28the world right here, Steaks in Italian. You just put them together,
- 12:30right, Ashley. I was always doing a great job. I appreciate you
- 12:33joining this this morning, and I'll be seeing you out at about Friday and
- 12:37Saturday. Thanks a lot, all right, Thanks Dave Ashley offered glance again,
- 12:39the executive director of the Putnam County Chamber of Commerce. And again there's
- 12:43been a theme this week and in the three days of Done shows this week,
- 12:46I've said, shop local, Shop local. You know, you know,
- 12:52when was the last time Amazon donated to your local Little League team?
- 12:56When was the last time that Amazon donated anything to your church or to your
- 13:00school group, or your band or whatever. You know, God bless those
- 13:03people. But let's try to keep it local as best we can. And
- 13:07I mentioned Putnam County, but we've got other other places in the Canau Valley.
- 13:13I mean, I've hit ad nauseum what's going on here in Charleston and
- 13:16all the other places in our listening area doing pretty much the same thing.
- 13:20So shop local, not just on Friday and Saturday, but year round when
- 13:24possible. It's nine to twenty. You know, the impact of special Olympics

- 16:07Ford Sales fourth annual Charleston Police Department Winter Wonderland Toy Drive is about to
- 16:11get underway for this year with us this morning, we got a cast of
- 16:12thousands here. I'm gonna start with my good friend David Payne from the Charleston
- 16:15Police Department. We got John Brown here, we got Laurence Swanson, we
- 16:18got Robert King, we got Marsha Peter, Jan Sandy, we got everybody
- 16:22here. I think David, let's start to Let's start with you. Good
- 16:25morning, sir, How are you? Good morning? I'm great, How
- 16:26are you? I'm fine, Thanks for being here. And hello to everyone
- 16:29else. Everybody just say hello one time. It's like I feel like we
- 16:33sh have to sing along or something in everybody, but Dave don't sing,
- 16:37so that's not gonna happen. All right, I'm about pain. Do you
- 16:40sing? Are you a singer? No? I'm not. Okay, I
- 16:42mean all right, So, Holly Jolly Brawley. Is this Friday and Saturday,
- 16:47you guys are gonna be setting up collecting toys. Let's talk about exactly
- 16:51what it is that you're looking for. What we're looking for is we're looking
- 16:55for toys, Brandy toys for children age zero to eighteen, rap toys.
- 17:00We'll be located there on Summer Street. Uh, starting on Friday and Saturday.
- 17:06UH. All you have to do is come down. We'll have our
- 17:07truck there in the tent. John will be there with the Astrogatto and some
- 17:11some vehicles. So, uh, yeah, I want to and let's welcome
- 17:15in John Brown. How are you, sir? I'm doing fine. How
- 17:18much yourself I'm doing I'm doing fine. Welcome to the show. Thank you
- 17:21for having us. And so short notice, let's talk about Astrogado's involvement in
- 17:26this. Well, I'm gonna have to turn to Michael and Rob King because
- 17:30he's been involved with the Charleston Police Department from the from the from the beginning,
- 17:36so he knows more, uh the history of how astork Otto of Charleston
- 17:41got involved with Lieutenant David Payne and uh in the in the gang and so
- 17:45I'll pass the mic to him so he can give you guys some insight.
- 17:48All right, all right, John. Basically, our involvement kind of came
- 17:52about because of a unfortunate tragedy in the Charleston area with patrol Officer Cassie Johnson.
- 18:00My owner Jamie Spears, kind of came downstairs and it was like,
- 18:03I want to get involved, what's the best way to do so? And
- 18:06I got a hold of David Payne and it's kind of run from there.
- 18:11Yeah, and it's in pain. You've been on the show in the past
- 18:15and you've talked about these different events that go on because you kind of get
- 18:18your pulse on what's going on in the community out there. Is Charleston an
- 18:22amazing place for what when it comes to giving back like this, Oh,
- 18:25it's huge. I believe that we really I've done some research and I think
- 18:30we really had the biggest toy drive anywhere in the US last year. We
- 18:34were able to give or provide toys for children and approximately about seven hundred and
- 18:40fifty children last year. So Charleston, we really have a big heart,
- 18:42really give, really come out and support really everything that we do. And
- 18:47so what's going to happen here is Holly Jolly Browley. We've been talking about
- 18:49that. It's in the weather. By the way, it's been kind of
- 18:52crappy yesterday, but everything looks great, I think all the ways through the
- 18:55Thanksgiving weekend. So we're gonna have a tent set up down there at Holly
- 18:59Jolly. That would be a great place for you to drop off your toy
- 19:02items when you bring the family down. But there's also going to be other
- 19:04places that you can drop it if you can't make it down to Holly Jolly
- 19:07Browley. Correct, we're actually going to be out at Low's actually starting Black
- 19:11Friday, six o'clock am. Sanda is going to be there with muffins.
- 19:15Also, you're going to get the hot dog if you drop off a toy
- 19:18prepared by City Dogs, and then we'll be on off or we'll be off
- 19:22to Holly Jolly Brawley. And you can also drop off your items at Astorgato
- 19:27Charleston, also the Hall House and again the main event, I guess is
- 19:33going to be at the Benny Keaton parking Lot on December the thirteenth and fourteenth,
- 19:37from eleven to seventh. That's kind of like the distribution you know.
- 19:40That's actually our big toy collection. Oh, that's a big one. That's
- 19:44where we actually have the Wonderland, the toy Wonderland, Okay, the Christmas
- 19:47trees, blow ups, bouncy houses, coco. It's a funny event.
- 19:51Bring the kids out. We'll usually give them treats, usually some reindeer gear.
- 19:56And that's on December the thirteenth and fourteenth, right, correct, eleven
- 19:59to seven. Alright, let's bring it Lauren here, Lauren what is your
- 20:02what's your role in all this? Laurence Swanson, Good morning. I'm helping
- 20:04with some of the graphic design and the promotion of this event online. Well,
- 20:08I've seen what you've put together already online. Looks so pretty good.
- 20:11Though that your background is graphic design, that sort of thing, it is,
- 20:15Yes, thank you, well, I appreciate you guys taking time with
- 20:19your schedule to beer. We're not done yet, though, I want to
- 20:21get into some specifics. What kind of toys are you looking for? I
- 20:25mean, as long as they're just new and unwrapped, that's pretty much it,
- 20:26right, correct, correct, We're any unwrapped toys usually have a problem
- 20:32getting toys for children, usually age twelve to eighteen is usually so just keep
- 20:36that in mind when you're shopping. Usually, if we can't find a toy
- 20:40for child, we actually give them a gift card. Last year, we
- 20:42were also able to do a Secret Santa where we actually gave out two thousand
- 20:45dollars in food coupons for grocery Shopings. Acts provide dinner to individuals about Charleston,
- 20:52and actually we don't just focus on Charleston. We actually serve kids all
- 20:56over West Virginia. You'd be surprised how many people come from other plays to
- 21:00actually receive a toy for their children. That's amazing. Again, we are
- 21:06talking with with John Brown, Robert King, Lawrence Wantson, and Lieutenant David
- 21:08Paine from the Charleston Police Department. To John, you've been kind of silent
- 21:11and this you're kind of playing the photography guy over there. So so what
- 21:15what what's what's your rolling all this? Well, you know, you know,
- 21:18I'm kind of not really shy, but just when it's time to get
- 21:22onto mic and talk and like when I was at Marshall University, I never
- 21:26did any interviews after the basketball game. I would kind of just run in
- 21:30the locker room go hurt by the way, Yeah, thank you very much.
- 21:33Okay, we could probably use you with Mall. We could probably d'An
- 21:37tony could probably use you right now because the first couple of games have been
- 21:38pretty rough. He's always asked me if I got any eligibility, we need
- 21:42you out there. What's your rolling all this? Well, Rob and David
- 21:47Payne came up to me and said, hey, we need another person to
- 21:51kind of get out in the community and do some advertising for us and try
- 21:55to just raise raise awareness about the Charleston Police Apartment toy drive. And so,
- 22:00you know, just by the position me and Rob King is in,
- 22:04we deal with a lot of people in the public and we know a lot
- 22:07of you know, just say people in hot places that they can say,
- 22:11okay, John, Yeah, I wouldn't mind helping you guys. And you
- 22:15know, just when I go out, I normally go out door to door
- 22:18and just introduce myself and hey, I'm big John, and I would like
- 22:22to see if you would like to, you know, be a sponsor and
- 22:25a good cause for just helping kids. Not only in Charleston, but you
- 22:30can be in Logan, you can be in Bluefield, you can be in
- 22:33you know, a Huntington. So if any sponsors out there listening, this
- 22:37is not just for the kids in county. This is for all kids in
- 22:42West Virginia. When Lieutenant David Payne and the Charleston Police Department put on their
- 22:47website that if any families need help, guys, you can be in you
- 22:52know, like I said, Princeton, West Virginia, come on down and
- 22:55you know, we'll try to do our best. And you know, Rob
- 22:57Is has been great and uh, bringing me aboard and it's just just something
- 23:03I like to do and it's you know, at no cost of you know
- 23:10me or anybody else. So just just come out and help the kids.
- 23:12And these type things, guys, are not possible without the help of a
- 23:15lot of business sponsors and I know Astrogato, you guys are in studio today,
- 23:21Elko Mechanical, Kevin P. Davis, Attorney at Law Hallhouse, Vino's
- 23:25Bar and Grill Select Cards are collectible site sounds and speed so l Ango Law
- 23:29Lows Home Improvement on the East and so so again you've got a little bit
- 23:33of everybody involved in this and that's what and pain that kind of goes back
- 23:37to what I was saying before, is what a giving area that that this
- 23:41is and West Virginia is in general. Oh correct, Yeah, without them,
- 23:45none, none of this really would be possible. We also have Quantum
- 23:48Sports that actually donates a lot. Chick fil A actually gave us some gift
- 23:52cards to give out for anyone that donates a toy. So just come by
- 23:56the toy drive and we'll give you a treat to Chick fil A. Now
- 24:00talk about the distribution. I know you get this event going on and then
- 24:03your big toy drives. You said it's a do BENNI ketom shrined out there
- 24:07on the parking lot on the thirteenth and fourteenth. But talk about how the
- 24:10distribution works. So what happens is that we actually put out a list where
- 24:12you can actually sign your child up for toy. We usually do that during
- 24:17the toy drive. That way we can gauge how many applicants we can actually
- 24:22receive. Then we take the toys over to the Charleston Colisseum the convention Center
- 24:26to actually distribute. So the distribution will take place on the eighteenth and nineteenth.
- 24:30You'll go to you'll follow our Facebook page with Charleston, WV Police,
- 24:36and that way you can sign your child up and actually find out when the
- 24:38distribution of the times are. And you know, I guess throughout the years,
- 24:44and I'm old, but no matter what your socioeconomic background is, there's
- 24:48always that one toy that a kid wants for Christmas and sometimes you know,
- 24:53I guess parents tell kids, you know, throughout the year, be a
- 24:56good boy, be a good girl, and you're gonna get the skiff.
- 24:59And more heartbreaking than for the parent not to be able to do that.
- 25:03You know, the funds just aren't there. This has happened, that's happened.
- 25:07But I think it's great that you guys and gals, you work together
- 25:10and you try to be able to make this happen for these kids. Sure.
- 25:12Yeah, we don't want any kid to go with that a toy for
- 25:15Christmas. Yeah. And of course we've had the gas crisis on the West
- 25:19Side and I've got actually, I've got city councilor Larry Moore, it's gonna
- 25:22be coming in to talk about that right after you. So it's been a
- 25:26rough couple of weeks for a lot of people in Charles, but I have
- 25:27a feeling that you're still going to see that West Virginia comes through. It
- 25:32comes through, we always do. I mean, last week we had our
- 25:36first ever turkey drop here where we encouraged and never done it before, and
- 25:41we asked people to come in and donate frozen turkeys and I don't even know
- 25:44how many we ended up with total and how much cash. People just came
- 25:47in and said, hey, I want to help about here, here's here,
- 25:49here's a box of five frozen turkeys, here's cash. You know that's
- 25:52real that's what we do in West Virginia, sir. We have a great
- 25:55community and we're really lucky to to actually be in living here in Charlo exactly
- 26:00right, all right, So let's go over all the particulars again because we've
- 26:03thrown out a lot of facts and figures. So it's a fourth annual Charleston
- 26:06Police Department Wonderland Toy Drive. This is for kids through eighteenth throughout our state,
- 26:11not just in Charleston. As you said, your web goes all over
- 26:15and the sponsors of it, I mentioned them early, have made it all
- 26:18possible. So now a Holly Jolly Braley, you guys are going to be
- 26:21set up under a tent down there, so bring a toy or two as
- 26:25you come out with the family. And Holly Jolly Braley's fantastic. By the
- 26:27way it's going to be. It's I mean, it's they're already working on
- 26:30it and had those folks on there, so you got that going on,
- 26:33and then you're going to be collecting those there also at Astrogato of Charleston and
- 26:37the Hall House, and hats off to you guys for doing this, and
- 26:41then you're going to have on December the thirteenth and fourteenth. That's when you're
- 26:45gonna have your big event there at the Benny Keata s Trin real good friends
- 26:48with Chris and those guys done at the Shrine Club. They do a fantastic
- 26:51job as well. Yeah. So, and where can people learn more?
- 26:55Let's give out the website, social media. Whatever you got on Facebook page
- 26:59is Elston Common, WV Police. They can follow all the updates on our
- 27:03on our Facebook page, or you can actually contact me if you'd like,
- 27:07my telephone numbers three or four, five, five, zero seven, zero
- 27:11six nine. And and this is something I didn't want to mention as we
- 27:14close that that it's possible there are people that are listening to this show that
- 27:18are maybe business owners today that are saying, Hey, look I'm stuck at
- 27:22the office, I'm stuck here at the shop. I'd like to I'd like
- 27:23to help out mention a few of those sponsors. You're taking more, You
- 27:27definitely take more. We are. We actually just posted this morning on our
- 27:30Facebook page a sponsorship page where you actually can go there and click on your
- 27:34donation and it actually is it goes to our CPAAA, which collects the money
- 27:41and actually goes out and does our shopping for us. How cool is that?
- 27:45Who gets to do that? Who gets to do the shop? I
- 27:47mean, I me know, you guys do. But do you do you
- 27:49do you get to be a part of that at all the shopping? Oh?
- 27:52We do. We do. We actually find we know the needs of
- 27:53some of the kids and we actually go out and shop for them also.
- 27:56But yeah, but our volunteers at c PAAA, they they really look forward
- 28:00to that. Yeah, I bet they do. Hey, guys, I
- 28:03appreciate everybody for being here today. Thank you so much. This is a
- 28:06great work that you're doing in our community, not only as we sit here
- 28:08in Charleston, but throughout the state of Western Any Thanks like as I appreciate
- 28:11you being here on the show with us today. Appreciate you. Thank you

- 33:58the community. But I'm all about the locally owned and operated businesses. I
- 34:02mean it is They're the backbone of a maera. I hate to sound,
- 34:06you know, like a commercial for them, but they are. It's what

- 34:53of More. Good morning, how are you good? Good morning? Scood
- 34:57thatb microphone over and make yourself a little bit. I just had like ten
- 34:59thousand p people in the studio here, so so you make it it's just
- 35:02me and you now, so make it a little bit more comfortable on yourselves
- 35:05there. You know, counselmen, I almost feel guilty for telling anyone on
- 35:08the West Side right now to have a happy Thanksgiving after all that you all
- 35:13have been through for the last week going on two weeks. Now, Well,
- 35:16you know we're people over there, resilient man. We bounced together,
- 35:20we come together and everybody supports each other. So it's you know, even
- 35:24though it's a rough time we're going through over there, but we still you
- 35:27know, we're just celebrating each other and it's happy that you know, we
- 35:30still many still have roofs over their heads and whatnot, and a lot of
- 35:32people have have gads restored to their house. But still we're having the problems
- 35:37with appliance. So that's the next phase we're going through right now. Yeah,
- 35:40and I know you well, you've been on the show in the past,
- 35:43and I know Larry that you're not not a guy that likes to talk
- 35:45about himself a lot, but you yourself have been personally impacted on this.
- 35:49What's your situation right now? Well, I'm still waiting. Yesterday they came
- 35:52on my street, they came to our houses, but Devin came back yet.
- 35:57So hopefully this morning excuse me my voice, I'm sorry, the ALLI
- 35:59used a two. I get it. So hopefully they come by today and
- 36:02they'll they'll get we'll get our block back on. Uh. They talk about
- 36:08the people who had stepped up to the plate and helped out doing this difficult
- 36:13time, so many uh United Way, man, I can't say enough,
- 36:16Miss O'Neil, their whole crew over there, Health right. They've been phenomenal.
- 36:22Like I said, health right, open the doors up. They've been
- 36:23feeding people every night from five to seven. They've been distributing goods that we
- 36:30got because of Governor Justice when he declared our area disaster area. So they've
- 36:36been a wonderful. The Red Cross. I can't say enough about them because
- 36:38when it started that that first Saturday night they opened up a warming zone.
- 36:44Bring Church. Derek and them guys over there are man awesome. Man Or
- 36:49Meal has been giving out food, Keep your Faith Corporation and uh, the
- 36:53City of Charleston. But I can say, Mayor Goodwin, it's been a
- 36:55one and I got to give enough. Like Mountaineer Gas, Moses Scaff and
- 37:01Dave Lockett Man, them guys have been I mean on top of it.
- 37:06They've been very transparent with us. Man and uh, I mean mister Scaff,
- 37:09he's been walking around. I see him every day. He's coming to
- 37:12the neighborhood. He's walking around to his cruise like he's he showed me what
- 37:15was going on. So I can appreciate him because now I had to make
- 37:19a post. People were asking what's going on, and I was like,
- 37:21I have to I don't know, so I don't know all acted information.
- 37:23So he showed me exactly what was going on. So I was able to
- 37:27make a post on Facebook to show people what was going on in the process,
- 37:30which eased a lot of people's minds because they didn't know what was going
- 37:32on. And I'm and it's a lot of people in the community. I
- 37:35mean, like, like it's just been so many people and organizations. Man
- 37:38even again on the West side, I give his name is Martech. He's
- 37:42been he's been a real vocal people on the West Side too. Councilman Mike
- 37:45Ferrell, his wife Megan Ferrol. I mean Meghan, I call her like
- 37:49I made a post like I called her the willing and dealing man because she's
- 37:52been getting everything you need. And Meghan, you know, and I'm prayers
- 37:54with Meghan and Mike. They they had a great loss yesterday to their family
- 38:00and uh but like I went to Megan, she had made a deal to
- 38:02go to aid and Z and Saint olbans Man, and I mean, it's
- 38:05it's been such loved about this. This is the county state wise, what's
- 38:07been going on. But a to Z donated so much stuff to us and
- 38:12helped out a lot of people, So davey know if I if I miss
- 38:15anybody, I'm telling you, I don't know. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 38:20The story posted Larry, I don't know whether you've had a chance to
- 38:22see it or not wv Metronews dot com. And it all came with some
- 38:25information that came out from out in there Gas yesterday that the situation there actually
- 38:29may be worse than originally thought as far as the numbers go, because there
- 38:35have been more people impacted than what they originally thought. They've made great,
- 38:38great strides in getting people back online and mean compared to where we were this
- 38:42time. But if you're like Larry Moore and you're sitting in your house,
- 38:45you're thinking, well, you got a hoodie on going, Well, well
- 38:47that's nice. But we appreciate the help, but we do really let to
- 38:51try to get this thing going even more. And and and I know Larry
- 38:57that there are thousands of others, you know, citizens are looking at this
- 39:01right now that are just saying what happened and how do we keep this from
- 39:07happening again. I know this is not your field of expertise, it certainly
- 39:09ain't mine, uh, but but we're learning more about this and we got
- 39:13to make sure this does not happen again. Yeah, like from what we
- 39:16were hearing, it's like a water line burst and it got into the gas
- 39:20line. That's what we know. What we found out because I'm telling you,
- 39:23like Friday night, all of a sudden or my gas I work in,
- 39:28and I was like, man, this is nuts. So you know,
- 39:30my bill was paid the first thing you do so and then Saturday morning,
- 39:36you know, like none of us had any idea what was going on.
- 39:39And then hopped those social media and people were like it was a gas
- 39:43it was a water line and it was a leak. And I was like,
- 39:45well, somebody got to tell us something. So, I mean,
- 39:49we had to do a water boil of Ivory. I mean it was.
- 39:51It was for the first like forty eight hours. It was kind of it
- 39:52was tough. We got the water back on, yeah, but then we
- 39:54had to boil the water. But then the thing about it, you couldn't
- 39:57boil the water because you had any gas. Yeah, so we were sitting
- 40:00there like I mean it was I mean that's how it got real for a
- 40:02minute, because you sitting and thinking like man like almost like a little bit
- 40:05like the water vinsery a little bit but not as bad. But you know,
- 40:07you were like because people have gas, like I have gas, so
- 40:10people were like you got to boil your water, but you couldn't boil your
- 40:14water because you had gas. So you were just sitting around like, man,
- 40:16what I'm gonna do. So that's when, like, I mean,
- 40:20we just wanted like more of a heads up and I think there'll be more
- 40:23a better I guess information dispersual next time this goes on, because yeah,
- 40:30I hope so too, because I mean it was because I know I Saturday
- 40:31that Saturday morning, I was like I woke up and I was like,
- 40:35I know people who couldn't get out the needed heater. So I went and
- 40:38personally and bought some myself and was going to people I know who had kids,
- 40:43or elderly people or disabled people I know who couldn't get out. So
- 40:45because I saw I could do because I didn't know what else to do.
- 40:47But I did give a call to the city that Saturday morning, and they
- 40:52they jumped into action quick. That's why I said, red Cross came and
- 40:55I said, man and Meal showed up on the save a lot of park
- 40:58with old table, lot of parking lot giving out food. So people sprung
- 41:01the action quick for us. And I can say thank you on that,
- 41:05counsel Larry Morris here, considering the circumstances, councilman, how would you rate
- 41:08the response of the companies here Mountaineer Gas and West Virginian American Water. Mountaineer
- 41:15Gas has been like I can't. Once again, I give them a kudos.
- 41:20I mean, man Dave and mister Moses and them they guys, yeah,
- 41:27yep, this is a scaff yeah, man, them guys have been
- 41:30boots boots on them because like I said, last Saturday, Jared Terrace is
- 41:34building on the west side with it hosts like ulderly folks and disabled and they
- 41:38were out without gas and they got them on Saturday and they were over there
- 41:44just walking around talking to people. And mister Scaff's, like I said,
- 41:46he's been in the neighborhood all the time. His neighbor room was every night.
- 41:49I can see mister Scaff going to his cruise and his checking on stuff.
- 41:52And Dave to uh, the water company, they've been, they've been.
- 41:54They've been highly active too, they really have. They've been. They've
- 41:58been helping out because a lot of criticism, and I didn't ask you on
- 42:01the show to criticize them accounts of more because but but but there has been
- 42:05a lot of criticism of West Virginia American water in this situation. Now,
- 42:07I mean, I know you've heard it, you know, but I can
- 42:13say they have been like because there's been a few, like a few instances
- 42:15where the water lines have been pierced to whateveryone's being working and they have been
- 42:20on top of that and they have to make sure they got the water or
- 42:22water going back. But like I've I've had more contact with the gas people
- 42:28just because I guess they've been more because it's been more of them having to
- 42:30get their lines fixed and get the water out the line, so they've been
- 42:32more boots on the ground. Mister scaff I know, has been on this
- 42:36show to been on Hoppy a couple of times as well, and he's he's
- 42:37been right out there in front of it, and he you know, and
- 42:42Larry he said on the show when I had him on last week, he
- 42:44said, thirty two years of this, we've never seen anything like this,
- 42:46and it seems like that the more we peel it back, we find even
- 42:51more. It's like it's like piling on at this point. Yeah, And
- 42:53I just think, you know, over the years of infrastructure, you know,
- 42:55the West Side, and I know people get always the West Side,
- 42:59but ruthfully like infrastructure and stuff, and so the years of neglect sometimes and
- 43:04it builds upon things when you I mean, when you don't maybe it might
- 43:07have been sixty seventy years maybe since they've maybe updated lines in that side of
- 43:12town. And then after well, things are going to happen and it's going
- 43:15to erode. It's just it's part of this party. Infrastructure and our crumbling
- 43:19infrastructures are problem nation wise, and nothing else matters if we don't get the
- 43:22infrastructure. Face You're right about that, Uh, Larry, What does today
- 43:25and tomorrow in the next couple of days look like for for you and the
- 43:29people of the West Side. Well, you know, you know, we're
- 43:31gonna try to make the best at the best situation. I don't know.
- 43:36Last night, but keep your faith. Corporation, we had our things giving
- 43:37dinner and uh we fed lots of people. We gave out a lot of
- 43:42stuff like I shout out tomorrow fraternity gonna make a sci fi. We ought
- 43:45we made food boxes for many people. And I want to say thank you
- 43:50to also David Payne for the Chelsea Police Department. He was there helping us
- 43:52pass our boxes. We fed over one hundred families with this boxes to keep
- 43:57them going throughout the rest of the week in uh but we fed a lot
- 44:00of people with dinners and then I got say, a lot of people were
- 44:02very optimistic. I'm telling you, just like just talking to the people out
- 44:06there, they all everybody's spirit was up even though it's a bad time.
- 44:09I mean, like it's gonna be different because like right now, it's funny
- 44:13because like Thanksgiving, you know these my mom does his cooking and all this
- 44:15and whatnot. So we're talking about, well we're gonna order for somebody and
- 44:20make it up for Christmas, you know. So look at the best side
- 44:22of it and make the best out of a bad situation. So, I
- 44:24mean, I just if anybody needs anything, I know, if I can
- 44:28do anything, just give me a call and I'll do my best. Of
- 44:30people out who are not able, because I'm in a situation where I'm able
- 44:34to do more for myself than some people I know who can't. So I
- 44:38mean, I just feel good, you know, and I said, hopefully
- 44:42the gas company is on my street now, hopefully when I leave here,
- 44:45I could take a hot shower tonight. Your water bill is gonna be five
- 44:49hundred dollars because you're going to spend about that about three hours in the shower.
- 44:52I understand how that goes. Anything As we close, counsel and anything
- 44:55you'd like to say to the people of the West Side and they closing thoughts.
- 45:00Yeah, man, I just want to say the West Side people,
- 45:01thank you so much and for just coming together because we have been you know,
- 45:07this has been, like you said, nothing that has never seen like
- 45:08this ever in thirty some years with mister scaff told me and just how everybody's
- 45:15been nervely helping out, taking care of everybody, and just keep reaching out
- 45:20to me. If you need anything, call me. I'm gonna be out
- 45:22a little bit. I got some crockpots for a few people I know need
- 45:23some crock pots. I still got some blankets left and just I'm just I
- 45:29just think as a neighborhood hole all and I got also forgot to say something
- 45:31too, thank you Jeanine Fergie, counselorman. Jeanie Fergie too. I can't
- 45:36leave her out. Thank you, Ginny for all you've done, and also
- 45:38too, mother people. I can't gonna think thank you or Delegate Mike Pushkin,
- 45:42but I gotta definitely give a big shout out to Delicate Hollis Lewis,
- 45:45which he's a former he's a Wes Westside kid, and him and Sharon Hornbocal
- 45:49made a big poll with the with the governor to help us get the disaster
- 45:53zon put on the West Side. And I got to thank Governor Jim Justice.
- 45:57He was at the dinner yesterday too. Thank you for all you've done.
- 46:00The West Side people. We're definitely own appreciative man. Just we just
- 46:02stick together west as strong as they've been saying, you know all right,
- 46:06Counsel Millarium More, It's always a pleasure to have you in the show.

- 50:37I do want to get back to the gas crisis though for a moment,
- 50:39as a reference earlier, and it is the lead story this oneningwv metronews dot
- 50:44com. The gas crisis appears to be worse than what was originally thought.
- 50:50Now you could probably bottle that and play it back every day at this time,
- 50:53because we keep saying that. But did they just keep uncovering other the
- 51:00councilman more and I talked about this the governor yesterday taking aim at West Virginia
- 51:05American Water Company, saying he can't imagine that the Public Service Commission would grant
- 51:10the water company's request for a rate hike. Now, the Governor went on
- 51:15to criticize the water company for what he believes is a lack of participation in
- 51:21the efforts to get everyone back online. Quoting the governor, now, the
- 51:24water company ought to be the first and foremost in doing anything that they could
- 51:29possibly do to help. And quote Megan Hannah, who is a West Virginian
- 51:34American Waters senior manager of Governmental and external affairs, told our news department yesterday
- 51:37that the water company has been engaging with the city in residence throughout this crisis,
- 51:44and Councilman More even alluded to that bit. I will say this as
- 51:47a personal note. I've known Megan Hannah for a number of years, and
- 51:51I've always found her to be a stand up, just all around good person.
- 51:54That having been said, I can't imagine what it's like to be the
- 52:00pr person for West Virginian American Water Company over the last like ten years or
- 52:06so. They're they're doing the lord's work out there right now. I mean,
- 52:09I be honest with you. It's it can't be easy to be the
