- 0:08Speaker 1: This is the me Eater podcast coming at you shirtless, severely,
- 0:13Speaker 1: bug bitten, and in my case, underwear listening podcast. You
- 0:18Speaker 1: can't predict anything, all right, everyone, We have a like
- 0:27Speaker 1: a boatload boatload of guests. I don't know if you could.
- 0:32Speaker 1: You don't count as a guest, Johnnie. So there's Yanni
- 0:36Speaker 1: and then three, uh, Matt Moyson, who I've known for
- 0:41Speaker 1: twenty years. I think it's more than that. I think
- 0:45Speaker 1: it's more than that. No, yeah, yeah, it's more two years. Fitzgerald,
- 0:51Speaker 1: Jamie Fitzgerald, who I've known for Like, if I've known
- 0:54Speaker 1: Matt for twenty I hadn't known you for twenty five
- 0:57Speaker 1: early college. Jimmy Dorn and I don't know really at all.
- 1:01Speaker 1: Bare what's the pizza with the what's the pizza with
- 1:05Speaker 1: the hot red peppers on it? I don't know the
- 1:08Speaker 1: pizza with the hot red peppers on it? You don't
- 1:10Speaker 1: have a name for that. We have one called the
- 1:12Speaker 1: Carols and that that's pepperoni and hot peppers on it. Yeah,
- 1:15Speaker 1: Jimmy and dor and I just brokered a boat deal.
- 1:21Speaker 1: Broke a boat deal. Excited about our boat deal. I'm
- 1:24Speaker 1: pretty excited about it. I think the terms are completely reasonable.
- 1:27Speaker 1: I think we need to put some terms around it.
- 1:29Speaker 1: All right, Well, if you break it, you bought it. Now.
- 1:33Speaker 1: First thing I want to get into is we have
- 1:35Speaker 1: a guy like he's like the resident philosopher that never
- 1:38Speaker 1: met him, a dude named Luke Ryan who always writes
- 1:40Speaker 1: in with vexing questions. I want to pull you guys
- 1:45Speaker 1: on a question Luke Ryan had. Luke Ryan says, um,
- 1:53Speaker 1: what one I want to do first? Here's the first one.
- 1:56Speaker 1: If you had to guess, imagine that you're standing on
- 2:01Speaker 1: a patch of public ground, okay, and you're looking at
- 2:08Speaker 1: a deer who's awesome on public ground, but between you
- 2:13Speaker 1: and the deer is private ground. This happened to me
- 2:17Speaker 1: on Saturday. I had this whole scenario go through my
- 2:24Speaker 1: head because we're working a fence and we're looking at
- 2:28Speaker 1: elk and I'm like, they're on private. And then we realized,
- 2:30Speaker 1: we're like, let's get a little closer to make sure.
- 2:31Speaker 1: And then we realized, no, they're not on private, they're
- 2:34Speaker 1: on public. But there's a corner, you know, like there
- 2:37Speaker 1: was coming basically out between the two of us, and
- 2:40Speaker 1: we had to go around that corner. But I kept thinking, well,
- 2:42Speaker 1: what if we get close enough and all of a
- 2:45Speaker 1: sudden I'm pinned. But I'm I still haven't made it
- 2:47Speaker 1: around the corner bullet trespass, I'm gonna have to shoot across. Yeah, so,
- 2:51Speaker 1: but that didn't happen. But I had these exact thoughts. Yeah,
- 2:54Speaker 1: I don't understand who who? I don't even know how
- 2:56Speaker 1: did I also find out you gotta elk without you
- 2:59Speaker 1: having known you gotta? It's been a busy weekend, So
- 3:03Speaker 1: who are you out with? My buddy Brady and I
- 3:06Speaker 1: had a cow tag that was good through the end
- 3:08Speaker 1: of the year, so we're not shout a co out.
- 3:11Speaker 1: Didn't even like tell me about it? I figured I
- 3:13Speaker 1: would today. Well, you know, I found out about but
- 3:16Speaker 1: not in the way I normally like to find out
- 3:17Speaker 1: about stuff. All Right, So here you are, you're yanness. Okay,
- 3:22Speaker 1: just look at your honest you're jest and you're on
- 3:28Speaker 1: public looking at a dear elk. What have you? On public?
- 3:33Speaker 1: But your bullet needs to cross private. Your bullet will
- 3:36Speaker 1: have to trespass to get there. Is that legal or
- 3:40Speaker 1: not legal? Matt? It's perfectly legal. And here's why I
- 3:45Speaker 1: don't I'm saying in a declarative way because it sounds
- 3:50Speaker 1: more convincing. No, did I thought you'd somehow, because you
- 3:58Speaker 1: don't own airspace when you own the land, and that
- 4:03Speaker 1: is what your bullet is traveling through. No, no bootprint,
- 4:07Speaker 1: is no bootprint to be found on that land. Well,
- 4:09Speaker 1: let me, let me, let me address that. Why is it?
- 4:14Speaker 1: Why is it illegal to corner hop because you have
- 4:19Speaker 1: to theoretically place a foot on the really corner hopping.
- 4:24Speaker 1: I know what you I mean, what you understand? Corner
- 4:28Speaker 1: This is another landscape or land issue, ownership issue. Imagine
- 4:32Speaker 1: you got okay, imagine you got two pieces of well,
- 4:36Speaker 1: two squares out. You got two squares and the corners
- 4:39Speaker 1: butt up so the corners are touching. Now, imagine that
- 4:43Speaker 1: those two squares where the corners are touching our public property,
- 4:47Speaker 1: and then the other two squares that would make up
- 4:49Speaker 1: the big square. Am I saying this right? Yeah? Keep going, okay, okay.
- 4:55Speaker 1: Checkerboard situation. Literally, imagine a checkerboard and you're only allowed
- 5:00Speaker 1: to walk on the black spots. The white spots are private,
- 5:05Speaker 1: The black spots on the checkerboard are public. You would
- 5:09Speaker 1: think that you would be able to walk up to
- 5:11Speaker 1: the very tippy corner of a black piece, reach your
- 5:15Speaker 1: foot out and over and land your foot on the
- 5:19Speaker 1: corner of the next black piece and step over to
- 5:22Speaker 1: it and have not trespassed if you're going by what
- 5:27Speaker 1: Matt Moyson is telling you, and that's illegal. That kind
- 5:31Speaker 1: of corner illegal. It's illegal because you're passing through. I
- 5:38Speaker 1: don't know how you're passing, right, your body is passing through.
- 5:45Speaker 1: So I don't know that the answer is an airspace
- 5:47Speaker 1: issue if you were hunting, but it probably helps because
- 5:50Speaker 1: let's say you were hunting deer with a bowling ball.
- 5:55Speaker 1: You could see a guy saying, hey man, you just
- 5:57Speaker 1: rolled your ball across my property. You can't do that.
- 6:03Speaker 1: And what's senior azing, too, is if you flew an airplane, Well,
- 6:09Speaker 1: at what point is it? Because what at what altitude
- 6:12Speaker 1: does it become private? I don't know. I can't go
- 6:14Speaker 1: hover a drone eighteen inches off your picnic table while
- 6:18Speaker 1: you're eating dinner, are you sure? No? But yeah, alright,
- 6:24Speaker 1: So we need to get this one because I haven't
- 6:31Speaker 1: called that f F a f A, but I do
- 6:33Speaker 1: have some insight. It seems to me that those boundaries
- 6:37Speaker 1: go they go up, all right, I'm gonna this is
- 6:40Speaker 1: a poor analogy, probably, but I'm gonna use it. In
- 6:42Speaker 1: the NFL, in order to determine a touchdown, the football
- 6:47Speaker 1: has to break the plane and that plane goes up.
- 6:53Speaker 1: That's how they use to demarcate an end zone for football.
- 6:56Speaker 1: So to me, it seems I am a sports fan.
- 7:00Speaker 1: Are you a Seahawks fan? Jimmy dorn Is, Holy ship?
- 7:04Speaker 1: Is that kind of Seahawks fan? I got with? I
- 7:09Speaker 1: just don't even I can't agett to understand it. But anyways,
- 7:14Speaker 1: sports fan? So yeah, yeah, So I think that boundary
- 7:17Speaker 1: go your arm can just pass over the end zone.
- 7:19Speaker 1: When your body never touches the end zone, you win.
- 7:22Speaker 1: All you gotta do is have that ball over that
- 7:24Speaker 1: plane which goes up to you know, the heavens. What
- 7:27Speaker 1: if it just passes through and passes back out, it
- 7:29Speaker 1: doesn't matter. You cross that plane. That's a turn they crossed,
- 7:32Speaker 1: the plane made and your checkerboard is in three D.
- 7:35Speaker 1: So it's like all those I didn't know the football county.
- 7:39Speaker 1: So you're saying, I get what you're saying, But what
- 7:42Speaker 1: about the bullet? Yeah, I think if that bullet passes
- 7:46Speaker 1: the plane using that same analogy, then it's that bullet
- 7:50Speaker 1: is on private land for however long it takes to
- 7:52Speaker 1: travel across. But do private laws apply to bullets? I
- 7:57Speaker 1: would think so, because the bullet can from some from
- 8:00Speaker 1: an operator, right from somebody making the decision to shoot
- 8:04Speaker 1: across that private land. Jimmy dor um, Well, it depends,
- 8:11Speaker 1: like everything else in life. I don't know. I've spend
- 8:13Speaker 1: I suppose looking at from both sides of the question.
- 8:16Speaker 1: If you know, if I'm the private landowner, am I
- 8:18Speaker 1: gonna be want somebody throwing at six round across my property?
- 8:22Speaker 1: Probably not, But we're not asking you what you want,
- 8:24Speaker 1: we're asking well, I kind of try to answer it.
- 8:28Speaker 1: Or if if I was the guy and I was
- 8:30Speaker 1: in that situation, I would put myself on the other
- 8:32Speaker 1: guy's shoes and go, that might piss me off? Or
- 8:35Speaker 1: you know, how big is it? You know what's the
- 8:37Speaker 1: ramifications of my decision making? I don't know. I would
- 8:39Speaker 1: say it's probably not kosher, and I try to figure
- 8:42Speaker 1: out a way to just get around the private Is
- 8:46Speaker 1: that the answer? Jimmy's answer is predicated on how big
- 8:53Speaker 1: For permission or forgiveness, it's a lot easier to ask
- 8:57Speaker 1: for permission in my experiences. Oh, speaking of that real quick,
- 9:03Speaker 1: can we can you talk about the the guy you
- 9:06Speaker 1: harvest wheat for and what happened with that buck on
- 9:08Speaker 1: the bloody of mine? There was not not the guys
- 9:11Speaker 1: that I work with. That story all wrong. That's great. Yeah,
- 9:14Speaker 1: he caught somebody. Uh yeah, sure we can tell a story.
- 9:18Speaker 1: I tell I won't name names. So it wasn't the
- 9:20Speaker 1: guy you h assist with his agricultural operation. Just another
- 9:24Speaker 1: a buddy, another guy that lives in town. And uh yeah,
- 9:29Speaker 1: they're you know, there was a few deer on his
- 9:31Speaker 1: place that he had seen and then lo and behold
- 9:35Speaker 1: there was a pickup truck that didn't belong there, which
- 9:37Speaker 1: is how anybody thinks you can get away anything past
- 9:40Speaker 1: the farmer in their area. It's just stupid. And I
- 9:44Speaker 1: mean the fact that someone would think that he would
- 9:47Speaker 1: not yeah, that it would go unnoticed. And then you
- 9:51Speaker 1: know they had seen this buck and it was an
- 9:53Speaker 1: absolute monster of a deer. I'll show you a photo
- 9:55Speaker 1: on a bit and uh, you know, all of a
- 9:58Speaker 1: sudden he hears bang and he's like wait a minute,
- 10:01Speaker 1: and he's like, oh, because he thought possibly they were
- 10:03Speaker 1: gonna be hunting coyotes, bouch and he thought and then
- 10:08Speaker 1: where he heard it coming from. He's like, no, I'm
- 10:10Speaker 1: gonna run over there and see if they just shot
- 10:11Speaker 1: that deer that I was saving, because he was actually
- 10:13Speaker 1: saving it first kid. And of course he went over
- 10:16Speaker 1: there and they were down the bottom. The coolie quickly
- 10:18Speaker 1: feel dressing it, and he went down and you know,
- 10:22Speaker 1: read him the riot Act and uh, you know, and
- 10:25Speaker 1: then they threw themselves on the sword. You mean He's like, oh,
- 10:28Speaker 1: I didn't you know, he started this story which he
- 10:30Speaker 1: didn't think he was trespassing, but you know, he knew
- 10:34Speaker 1: full well he was trespassed. And then it devolved into
- 10:36Speaker 1: the that's the biggest year I ever saw in my life.
- 10:38Speaker 1: I also hate telling stories like this too, because you know,
- 10:40Speaker 1: it's like that told three stories down the line, how
- 10:43Speaker 1: all the facts gonna change. But anyways, uh so he
- 10:47Speaker 1: tried out the idea that he wasn't trespassing, and but
- 10:51Speaker 1: he had to jump a fence, so it's kind of
- 10:53Speaker 1: hard to say. I didn't know that that fence wasn't
- 10:56Speaker 1: there for a reason. So then it became it was
- 10:58Speaker 1: just so big. He's like kitting yeah, and then yeah,
- 11:02Speaker 1: and the deer was so big. I don't know what happened,
- 11:05Speaker 1: you know, And he's like, all right, we'll get the
- 11:07Speaker 1: heck out of here. But then he had called the
- 11:09Speaker 1: sheriff and Fishing Game and they came and they took
- 11:12Speaker 1: everything and wrote to a bunch of tickets, and fishing
- 11:14Speaker 1: Game ended up with a big, really big deer. I
- 11:18Speaker 1: guess on what I've seen in the area in a while.
- 11:21Speaker 1: I don't want to tell too many details of this
- 11:22Speaker 1: because I don't it's best not no, no, not your thing.
- 11:27Speaker 1: A whole different story. My brother, I don't know if
- 11:31Speaker 1: he knows of him, or knows knows him, or knows
- 11:34Speaker 1: of him. But there's a feller who poached the buck.
- 11:40Speaker 1: And the buck got confiscated by the State Fishing Game Agency,
- 11:46Speaker 1: and the State Fishing Game Agency, as they often do,
- 11:49Speaker 1: have it mounted and they hang it in a game office,
- 11:57Speaker 1: right and you know, like a lot of times you
- 11:58Speaker 1: go into game office that I've seen a lower place,
- 12:01Speaker 1: and they'll have all these animals up like like exemplary specimens,
- 12:05Speaker 1: and with them is like the story of how they
- 12:08Speaker 1: were confiscated or whatever. Hit by a car, hm, you know, poacher,
- 12:14Speaker 1: as they caught, and this buck carries the name of
- 12:20Speaker 1: the tells the story of the poaching case. My brother
- 12:25Speaker 1: says that this guy is still so proud of that
- 12:27Speaker 1: buck that he takes friends down to fishing game. Takes
- 12:33Speaker 1: friends down the fishing game to show them the buck.
- 12:36Speaker 1: He was okay with the fine. Wow, it's like a
- 12:41Speaker 1: matter of fact, I got a nice buck. If you'd
- 12:43Speaker 1: like to take a ride down to the fishing game.
- 12:46Speaker 1: He's not. You can't touch it. Yeah, they confiscated it,
- 12:51Speaker 1: confiscated everything, and then wrote him a whole bunch of tickets.
- 12:54Speaker 1: And then one of the fellas that was involved wasn't
- 12:56Speaker 1: supposed to be uh access in firearms, and that apparently
- 13:00Speaker 1: he got in a bunch of trouble. So I love
- 13:02Speaker 1: that story. Yanni, were you did you meet this guy?
- 13:08Speaker 1: You know what I'm talking about. I'll tell you then
- 13:10Speaker 1: you're telling you met him. I was talking to a
- 13:12Speaker 1: warden who is watching one of those phony um one
- 13:17Speaker 1: of those phony Alaska shows, Alaska hunting shows, and he's
- 13:22Speaker 1: watching an episode and there's a scene in there where
- 13:27Speaker 1: they're gonna go out and shoot some caribou, and the
- 13:30Speaker 1: dad is making a big deal about how he's gonna
- 13:33Speaker 1: let his daughter do the shooting, and it's just the
- 13:40Speaker 1: warden watching. It just didn't like he says. He just
- 13:45Speaker 1: didn't strike me like the kind of guy who, in
- 13:48Speaker 1: this moment of cameras rolling and everything, is not gonna
- 13:52Speaker 1: just want the glory. And it seems strange to him.
- 13:56Speaker 1: He said, I'm sitting there watching and I'm thinking that
- 13:58Speaker 1: guy's gotta be a felon and can't be on camera
- 14:02Speaker 1: with that damn gun. Oh, and Colson turns up exactly right. Right,
- 14:10Speaker 1: Uh So, how did you vote? No? Or you don't
- 14:13Speaker 1: know or it depends or something like that. Shooting bullets
- 14:16Speaker 1: private property? No, I wouldn't do it. You're like, you're
- 14:21Speaker 1: not answering the question though you realize what exactly do
- 14:24Speaker 1: I think it not legal? You're yeah, I'm gonna say
- 14:27Speaker 1: that it's illegal. Okay, fair enough already know the answer.
- 14:32Speaker 1: So I don't know because I was on the email
- 14:34Speaker 1: chain too. Legal. It's legal, legal, no, kid, Yeah, don't
- 14:39Speaker 1: get excited. I don't know. I don't think. I don't
- 14:43Speaker 1: think it's your airspace thing. What is it? It just
- 14:47Speaker 1: says it's not illegal, it's not unlawful. No, I put
- 14:50Speaker 1: this to an investigator and Idaho. Every state is different,
- 14:55Speaker 1: so he says, I can only speak to here. He says,
- 14:57Speaker 1: it's not unlawful to shoot from public to public over private. Well,
- 15:04Speaker 1: here's the doozy same thought. The resident philosopher Luke Grin
- 15:07Speaker 1: writes in to say this. You're in a state where
- 15:12Speaker 1: you're not allowed to bait deer or put out mineral attractans.
- 15:20Speaker 1: What's wrong? Fits? I think I know where you're going
- 15:22Speaker 1: with this. But oh please, no, I just shooting across
- 15:26Speaker 1: state line where you can do that. No, no, no, no, no,
- 15:29Speaker 1: we're done. We're shooting bait. So yeah, this is a
- 15:34Speaker 1: good one though. I like that. So you're in a
- 15:37Speaker 1: state where it is unlawful debate or use any kind
- 15:42Speaker 1: of mineral attracting to hunt big game. But has anyone
- 15:47Speaker 1: who's wandered around out in the woods nose. Ranchers who
- 15:52Speaker 1: are running cattle have to put out supplements for livestock.
- 16:00Speaker 1: So here you have where a rancher has out a
- 16:04Speaker 1: salt lick or a supplement lick for his cattle, but
- 16:09Speaker 1: it's illegal to put it out for critters. And you
- 16:16Speaker 1: realize that elk are in fact using this legally placed supplement.
- 16:25Speaker 1: Are you allowed to shoot deer? Oh, it doesn't matter.
- 16:32Speaker 1: Are you allowed to hunt over that legally placed supplement
- 16:37Speaker 1: which was not intended as an attractive To add a
- 16:41Speaker 1: little flavor to this, I'll point this out. In states
- 16:46Speaker 1: where you're not allowed to bait for bears, there's often
- 16:50Speaker 1: a lot of questions around what if I shoot an
- 16:54Speaker 1: elk and I got the elk? Or keep talking about
- 16:58Speaker 1: let's say shoot a deer and up the deer, and
- 17:02Speaker 1: then the next day I wake up when there's a
- 17:04Speaker 1: bear eating the deer and I shoot it. Have I
- 17:09Speaker 1: baited bears or not? We can get to that. But
- 17:16Speaker 1: that's his color to this broader thing, the mineral lick thing.
- 17:20Speaker 1: Matt me first, you know, if you if you feel
- 17:27Speaker 1: like you're being unfairly picked out. No, No, it's a challenge. Um,
- 17:34Speaker 1: I don't know, so I number one, I'm not sure
- 17:37Speaker 1: actually the answer, But I would say that that is illegal,
- 17:42Speaker 1: And I would say I feel like when I've read
- 17:46Speaker 1: regulations that talk about the legality of using bait, using
- 17:53Speaker 1: an attractant, they talk about having it be illegal to
- 17:58Speaker 1: hunt over bait like they I don't think they talk
- 18:03Speaker 1: about placing the attractive. I think they talk about it
- 18:07Speaker 1: in terms of it being illegal to hunt over a
- 18:13Speaker 1: placed bait or mineral attracting whatever, But I don't know.
- 18:17Speaker 1: I don't know. That's great, that's great, But I want
- 18:19Speaker 1: to add this coloru into the color Okay, and the
- 18:23Speaker 1: bear thing. If you're in a non bait state, but
- 18:27Speaker 1: there's a dead animal land there, you could shoot the bear. Now,
- 18:34Speaker 1: if you shot a deer and dragged that gut pile
- 18:38Speaker 1: ten ft over to get out in the little opening
- 18:41Speaker 1: where you could spy on it from afar, that's baiting.
- 18:46Speaker 1: So do you think if you as long as you
- 18:49Speaker 1: don't touch that mineral lick, as long as you did
- 18:52Speaker 1: not manipulate it, an I know the answer. I know
- 18:56Speaker 1: the answer for the person I put it to an idol. Okay,
- 19:00Speaker 1: I would, I would, just but bear in mind the
- 19:02Speaker 1: stuff we're talking about about, Like that you um, yeah,
- 19:07Speaker 1: that you shot the deer and the next day come
- 19:09Speaker 1: by there's a burying the deer. You didn't do anything
- 19:11Speaker 1: to manipulate, Like you shot the deer legally, gout of
- 19:13Speaker 1: the deer, left the guts where they were. Bear happens
- 19:17Speaker 1: to turn up on it, right, I'm real hesitant about
- 19:19Speaker 1: this one. I would I would be inclined to say
- 19:21Speaker 1: that's probably not legal. It's an artificial attractment. It doesn't
- 19:24Speaker 1: matter who put it there, That's my guess. Fitzgerald, Yeah,
- 19:28Speaker 1: I think I guess the same. I don't know, but
- 19:31Speaker 1: it seems that if there's going to be enforceable regulations,
- 19:36Speaker 1: then AND AND agencies are not gonna want to get
- 19:39Speaker 1: into the matter of intention. Yeah, so I think that
- 19:45Speaker 1: they would try to make it as cut and dry
- 19:46Speaker 1: as possible. And if plus, I think they would probably
- 19:50Speaker 1: be relying on hunters, you know, understanding that that salt
- 19:57Speaker 1: lick that was there for a cattle is going to
- 20:00Speaker 1: attract game. So it's the hunter's responsibility to, you know,
- 20:07Speaker 1: resist that urge. But again, do I guess you know
- 20:11Speaker 1: what happen to me one time? I do, well, a
- 20:14Speaker 1: different time, not that you know what happened me one
- 20:19Speaker 1: time that you don't know what happened. I don't. I know,
- 20:22Speaker 1: you don't. I was, oh, funnally, Yeah, I was in
- 20:27Speaker 1: Idaho and I was talking with two other guys and
- 20:32Speaker 1: I didn't have a tag, but they did. And one
- 20:35Speaker 1: day it was raining real bad and they didn't want
- 20:39Speaker 1: to go out in the rain. So I went out
- 20:42Speaker 1: on a little walk about to see what I could see.
- 20:48Speaker 1: And I get about two miles from our camp and
- 20:51Speaker 1: lo and behold, I coming down this trail like a
- 20:55Speaker 1: seldom used trail. But I look and standing in a
- 20:58Speaker 1: place and just just not expecting to see it where
- 21:02Speaker 1: it felt extremely out of place. It's just a bull
- 21:06Speaker 1: standing there looking at me, and like the first thing
- 21:10Speaker 1: to start in my mind is like kind of you
- 21:13Speaker 1: in your head, like how something's gonna happen. I just
- 21:15Speaker 1: didn't like, it's just just rare to be walking out
- 21:17Speaker 1: trail also as a bull, just like watching you right
- 21:20Speaker 1: in a very heavily hunted area. So I hauled ask back.
- 21:28Speaker 1: I got one of the guys inspired him to and
- 21:31Speaker 1: then we go back and it's gone. But then I
- 21:34Speaker 1: started thinking so much about what was that thing doing there?
- 21:36Speaker 1: And I walked over and it was lick salt like
- 21:39Speaker 1: SALTI for yeah, I actually had it in my head.
- 21:44Speaker 1: It was like like it's a not a heavily used trail.
- 21:46Speaker 1: I kind of had in my head that it might
- 21:48Speaker 1: have been placed possibly it just it wasn't like kind
- 21:53Speaker 1: of like where you'd you know, usually you're gonna put
- 21:57Speaker 1: salt licks for animals, kind of like an area where
- 21:59Speaker 1: live stocks actually gonna hang around, you know, shade trees
- 22:02Speaker 1: out in like grazing areas. It just makes some sense.
- 22:05Speaker 1: Just was not like and I think it usually placed
- 22:07Speaker 1: two in places where they're trying to congregate the animals,
- 22:10Speaker 1: like by a gate, you'll put a block so that
- 22:14Speaker 1: you know, when you come around a week later, you
- 22:15Speaker 1: can then push the cattle through the gate by a
- 22:17Speaker 1: gate or by water or something that just yeah, this
- 22:20Speaker 1: just didn't look like if I was ranching cattle, which
- 22:23Speaker 1: I don't do, but if I was, and I was like,
- 22:25Speaker 1: I'm gonna go, you know, helped the herd out with
- 22:29Speaker 1: a lick, as I wouldn't go, like dump it where
- 22:31Speaker 1: this thing was dumped. It could have been a bad rancher. Yeah,
- 22:34Speaker 1: he could have been not good at running cattle. So anyway,
- 22:37Speaker 1: I could have very easily had I been holding the tag,
- 22:40Speaker 1: I would have shot the bull and I would have
- 22:42Speaker 1: walked over and he'd been laying out salt, dead on salt. Look,
- 22:44Speaker 1: you didn't see this. You can't see it when you
- 22:46Speaker 1: first encountered the bull. No, I I didn't see it
- 22:49Speaker 1: till I walked. It was burning at me so much
- 22:51Speaker 1: that just something was so unusual about his position that
- 22:58Speaker 1: I went over there and sure enough that's what was going.
- 23:00Speaker 1: Uh So I could have like I would have. Who knows.
- 23:05Speaker 1: We haven't got to the end. Yes, we don't know
- 23:07Speaker 1: if I'd have been an accidental poach or not. Jimmy Doran,
- 23:10Speaker 1: I'm gonna go with what fits said to you. I'd
- 23:12Speaker 1: say it's hunter's responsibility to know. And yeah, no, no, yes.
- 23:19Speaker 1: In Idaho, it says, and yeah, you already knows. You
- 23:21Speaker 1: read the unit. Our friend, Eir Crawford says, as for
- 23:27Speaker 1: the salt baiting question, our rule states the following. This
- 23:30Speaker 1: is an idahole. No person shall take big game animals
- 23:34Speaker 1: as outlined in this section with any bait, including grain, salt,
- 23:40Speaker 1: and any form liquid or solid, or any other substance,
- 23:44Speaker 1: not to include liquid scent, to constitute an attraction or enticement.
- 23:51Speaker 1: He says, in Idaho and Idaho it would be illegal.
- 23:54Speaker 1: Never mind that it is probably an ethical fairchase issue
- 23:58Speaker 1: as well, So they gold duke grind. They would have
- 24:04Speaker 1: to prove the intent, though, like you were saying, because
- 24:08Speaker 1: if you've never been to an area, right, and you
- 24:09Speaker 1: pop up there at first light and there's a herd
- 24:13Speaker 1: and you knock one down, and you walk over there
- 24:15Speaker 1: in the meadow and you realize that there's five salt lakes.
- 24:18Speaker 1: How could it really be your fault? Right? Yeah, I'm
- 24:21Speaker 1: taking out with a quarter if I get a ticket. Yeah,
- 24:25Speaker 1: they'll call me for a witness and I'll be like, oh,
- 24:27Speaker 1: Jimmy Dors talking all about the salt like alright, boat privileges.
- 24:34Speaker 1: How he was gonna act like he didn't know what
- 24:36Speaker 1: was there. He had someone else order the mental rock
- 24:41Speaker 1: for him. Um, you honest to get back real quick?
- 24:44Speaker 1: Can you finish talking about so? So you went out
- 24:46Speaker 1: and got this, You got a cow. We guys hunt.
- 24:49Speaker 1: You guys are hunting on public property. Of it's kind
- 24:53Speaker 1: of a hodgepodge spot. But I found the spox. I
- 24:56Speaker 1: was deer hunting there a couple of years ago. A
- 25:00Speaker 1: cross the drainage and I know what you're talking about. Yeah,
- 25:04Speaker 1: and one like morning, like across the drainage, it just
- 25:07Speaker 1: sounds like a war zone, you know. I'm like, oh
- 25:10Speaker 1: my god, I glass over there and there's orange everywhere
- 25:13Speaker 1: and elk flopping everywhere, and I'm like, man should have
- 25:16Speaker 1: been there, I guess this morning, you know, and all
- 25:19Speaker 1: day long from where I'm sitting, I can hear him,
- 25:21Speaker 1: and I can see dudes with sleds and horses and
- 25:24Speaker 1: in and out and work in this trail. It's probably
- 25:26Speaker 1: only like a mile and a half, you know from
- 25:27Speaker 1: the truck, and uh, by like midday, they all either
- 25:31Speaker 1: got their elk out, and I continue to glass for deer,
- 25:34Speaker 1: and like at three pm, a glass back down that
- 25:37Speaker 1: meadow and there's cow elk filtering back out in the meadow. Like,
- 25:41Speaker 1: I don't know what's going on down there, but I'm
- 25:43Speaker 1: gonna go get mine down there. And so I came
- 25:49Speaker 1: out the next weekend and uh they were right in there,
- 25:51Speaker 1: killed the cow. And so yeah, buddy of mine hiked
- 25:55Speaker 1: in Saturday morning and uh, perfect morning, man, like just
- 25:59Speaker 1: started snow in the night before and we had we've
- 26:01Speaker 1: had zero snow in Montana and anything we had is melted,
- 26:04Speaker 1: so we had probably two or three inches of fresh
- 26:07Speaker 1: and uh we get up to where we should be
- 26:09Speaker 1: able to see the elk and don't see him for
- 26:11Speaker 1: about ten or fifteen minutes, just long enough from like
- 26:14Speaker 1: what's playing be gonna be like, do we just go
- 26:16Speaker 1: for the big power loop or we're gonna turn around
- 26:19Speaker 1: and go home? And um, right there and there, we're
- 26:22Speaker 1: just kind of being dumb hunters. Were out on a
- 26:24Speaker 1: pretty exposed ridge at this point, and you know, hands up,
- 26:27Speaker 1: our butts and our fingers and boots and uh, what's
- 26:33Speaker 1: that's an expression? Yeah, we're not not not paying attention.
- 26:36Speaker 1: And I glass over kind of just just out of
- 26:39Speaker 1: my prifery where I wasn't really wasn't expecting to be,
- 26:41Speaker 1: just kind of into the trees a little bit. And
- 26:42Speaker 1: there's accountable, which was the oddest thing, right because it's
- 26:45Speaker 1: middle of December and you're expecting to see like a
- 26:48Speaker 1: minimum of a dozen cows together, right and if you
- 26:51Speaker 1: see maybe just an animal or twould be like two bowls.
- 26:54Speaker 1: But to just see a cow and a bowl together
- 26:57Speaker 1: struck us as odd. But like they're actually in love.
- 27:03Speaker 1: It's not just like most elk is just sex. Just September.
- 27:07Speaker 1: So that's a life partner issue there. Ye, well I
- 27:11Speaker 1: didn't help that out put him back on the market. Um,
- 27:21Speaker 1: but yeah, we just snuck right in there. And even
- 27:24Speaker 1: I think season has been closed for three weeks now
- 27:26Speaker 1: in Montana. So I was expecting to have some chill
- 27:29Speaker 1: elk and you know, they'd be out feeding late snowy morning,
- 27:32Speaker 1: and then this cow was definitely like moving towards the timber,
- 27:36Speaker 1: moving towards the timber, and we had to hustle a
- 27:38Speaker 1: little bit to get within rifle range before she got
- 27:40Speaker 1: back on to private. So not what was the dude
- 27:43Speaker 1: your hunting was doing? Just came along? Oh he wasting? No, no, no, sorry,
- 27:48Speaker 1: just not not shooting, just hunting. We're just enjoying the hunt. Yeah,
- 27:54Speaker 1: it's perfect, man, We got her out in two trips. Um.
- 27:59Speaker 1: I don't know what else say about it. It was,
- 28:01Speaker 1: you know, easy, It's just I've just had my feelings
- 28:06Speaker 1: hurt that I had to find out about it by
- 28:07Speaker 1: reading a text chain between you and and Kevin Murphy
- 28:10Speaker 1: the world's Greatest small game hunt. Yeah, well he was
- 28:13Speaker 1: piling it on. Man. That dude has been all across
- 28:16Speaker 1: North America shooting. Dude, if you get into a text
- 28:19Speaker 1: message war with Kevin Murphy about who's been doing what, yeah,
- 28:23Speaker 1: it's hard to come out on top. Um Fitzgerald. So
- 28:29Speaker 1: you only get to be here because you only because
- 28:31Speaker 1: you went on you finally after all the years I've known.
- 28:34Speaker 1: You know, you could have been on because you're an
- 28:35Speaker 1: avid angler. For an angler, I think that would get
- 28:40Speaker 1: me get me passage onto the show. You could have
- 28:43Speaker 1: been on because you're an angler, but you only recently,
- 28:47Speaker 1: Like why you only are you went on your first
- 28:48Speaker 1: hunting trip. Can you explain to me what? Why? Like
- 28:56Speaker 1: why not before? But why all of a sudden? Now? Well,
- 29:00Speaker 1: I actually did used to hunt when I was in
- 29:04Speaker 1: probably like nineteen twenty, but it was like deer camp
- 29:09Speaker 1: hunting off North Michigan. My cousin owned a place like
- 29:12Speaker 1: forty acres up in Fife Lake. Oh dude, I know
- 29:16Speaker 1: five Lake Will. I know that's where Matt drosslives and
- 29:19Speaker 1: uh so I would go up there during the fall,
- 29:22Speaker 1: you know, once one weekend of every fall and try
- 29:25Speaker 1: to go get a deer. In fact, the first time
- 29:27Speaker 1: I ever went hunting, I was walking out to my
- 29:29Speaker 1: tree stand, had my rightfle on my shoulder, and I
- 29:31Speaker 1: was probably it was like you know, four three in
- 29:33Speaker 1: the morning, come walking around a bend and there is
- 29:37Speaker 1: an eight point buck just standing right there and my
- 29:40Speaker 1: guns on my shoulder. So I'm thinking like, man, this
- 29:43Speaker 1: is this is it? Uh, it's easy. So I take
- 29:45Speaker 1: the gun on my shoulder and as soon as we do,
- 29:46Speaker 1: things gone. So I was like, well, I'm bound to
- 29:48Speaker 1: see another one here soon. I see twenty years a
- 29:55Speaker 1: lifetime pass. Uh. There's there's a writer. There's a gun writer,
- 30:00Speaker 1: David petzel Um, who has a line where he says, uh, Now,
- 30:10Speaker 1: he's an interesting figure because he's like a gun writing columnist.
- 30:14Speaker 1: But he's also but he's kind of weirdly infatuated with
- 30:17Speaker 1: like celebrity, who's famous? Do they deserve being famous? Stuff
- 30:23Speaker 1: like that? And doesn't Isn't he the one that kind
- 30:25Speaker 1: of plays like the grumpy gunwriter? Yeah? Like he um,
- 30:29Speaker 1: he has a he has a what one would call
- 30:32Speaker 1: it stick, which is probably Yiddish, right, think he has
- 30:38Speaker 1: a stick of it being a he's a grumpy guy,
- 30:41Speaker 1: like a grumpy old man, but he's aware of things
- 30:44Speaker 1: that grumpy old man aren't aware of, Like he has
- 30:47Speaker 1: big opinions about like Miley Cyrus. So like the normal
- 30:50Speaker 1: like grumpy old man that I know. If I went
- 30:52Speaker 1: and said, hey, man, what's your take on what Miley
- 30:55Speaker 1: Cyrus has been up too lately? They would look at
- 30:57Speaker 1: you like right, yeah, crazy right? So it's like this weird,
- 31:03Speaker 1: grumpy old man thing where you're sort of like real
- 31:05Speaker 1: hip to pop culture but hate it, but you got
- 31:09Speaker 1: a lot to say about it anyhow. He says slings
- 31:13Speaker 1: have saved more animals than Peter Slings like rifle sling rifles.
- 31:23Speaker 1: Oh okay, you know, because you don't know if you
- 31:25Speaker 1: remember your story you just told us a minute ago.
- 31:27Speaker 1: I did. I forgot that he's an outdoor life for field. Yeah,
- 31:36Speaker 1: very good writer, who is very funny. But it's just
- 31:38Speaker 1: like he's a it's a complex sort of things he's
- 31:41Speaker 1: got going on, like the intolerant grumpy old man slash
- 31:46Speaker 1: pop culture critic, which is actually like something you can
- 31:49Speaker 1: really develop. I was just gonna say, it sounds interesting.
- 31:52Speaker 1: We might want to see what we can get him
- 31:54Speaker 1: on to talk about it. Yeah, I would like that.
- 31:56Speaker 1: Can you ask him if he just always carries his
- 31:59Speaker 1: rifle like this out in both hands. Yeah, slings save
- 32:03Speaker 1: animals if they save shoulder arms? Man, Like, what do
- 32:06Speaker 1: you when you're climbing around? I think that what I
- 32:08Speaker 1: think that the real lesson there? Well, you know you
- 32:11Speaker 1: look at pictures of you know, this will help you
- 32:14Speaker 1: look at like the Africa guys, the professional hunters, the
- 32:17Speaker 1: phs in Africa, they don't use slings. There is carried
- 32:20Speaker 1: over there. They don't carry their guns either. Well, no,
- 32:23Speaker 1: the pH does. He'll have his gun over his shoulder,
- 32:26Speaker 1: but he's also fifty yards from the truck hunting flat
- 32:29Speaker 1: ground and there's a lot of danger stuff. They can
- 32:31Speaker 1: stomp you. I mean, you know it's he spin back
- 32:35Speaker 1: around and set it on the truck. But yeah, they
- 32:38Speaker 1: don't use them for that reason. I think that you
- 32:40Speaker 1: could be Yanni is not tell him to give everyone
- 32:43Speaker 1: your thoughts about slings, Johnnie, if we're gonna get back
- 32:47Speaker 1: to you for years. But I went through a phase
- 32:50Speaker 1: of not carrying one for that reason. Readiness. Yeah did
- 32:54Speaker 1: you really? Yeah? Yeah? And as I got it enough guys,
- 32:58Speaker 1: I mean it only happened a handful of time. Is
- 33:00Speaker 1: but that would even be prepping them, like, hey, we're
- 33:03Speaker 1: about to come over our eyes. Good chance it's gonna
- 33:06Speaker 1: be you know, something ahead of us here. Maybe you
- 33:09Speaker 1: should be ready, and maybe I should just said take
- 33:13Speaker 1: the gun off your shoulder and you know, carry it
- 33:16Speaker 1: in a field ready position. I didn't, but yeah, we'd
- 33:19Speaker 1: peek over and there's that bowl looking at you like
- 33:22Speaker 1: there is and you know, as they get their sling
- 33:24Speaker 1: off pieces out. So but you know, one of the
- 33:27Speaker 1: things we've gotten so kind of like paranoid about safety
- 33:33Speaker 1: and stuff that I usually don't even have a round chamber.
- 33:36Speaker 1: So the least my problems is having the thing on
- 33:40Speaker 1: my shoulder. You know, it's funny. I mean I never
- 33:42Speaker 1: even considered it, Like, I never considered the sling as
- 33:46Speaker 1: being a uh, having an impact on readiness. It would
- 33:50Speaker 1: just never occurred to me. It's pretty fast. It's a
- 33:52Speaker 1: good point. But yeah, if you walked around with it
- 33:55Speaker 1: up against shoulder all time, crack off, there's a time
- 33:58Speaker 1: and place, you know, Like I'll put on my backpack
- 34:00Speaker 1: if it's dark. I don't really put on my backpack.
- 34:04Speaker 1: Any chance of seeing it if my gun's on my
- 34:07Speaker 1: backpack is because my tag is punched or it's pitch black. Right.
- 34:10Speaker 1: I hate that feeling. But you've gotta be able to
- 34:12Speaker 1: recognize like when you're sort of again to use my
- 34:16Speaker 1: expression from earlier, but like kind of like Didley dialing
- 34:19Speaker 1: and not paying attention not haut and then you're going
- 34:21Speaker 1: down a trail and you just go, man, it's a
- 34:24Speaker 1: good chance that something could be just standing here in
- 34:26Speaker 1: any moment and get the rifle off your shoulder and
- 34:28Speaker 1: just remember everybody taught they taught that. What do they
- 34:32Speaker 1: call that? It is called like the cross field field carry, right, Yeah, uh,
- 34:38Speaker 1: stone stone glacier. They got the pack thing. You ever
- 34:43Speaker 1: see this? Yeah? I have it? Ever really stuck that.
- 34:45Speaker 1: I just go like, no, no, no, no, that's not
- 34:47Speaker 1: where there's but you know what you're talking about. What
- 34:48Speaker 1: your quick draw if they have one where you look
- 34:51Speaker 1: it to your pack. But there's this little tab so
- 34:55Speaker 1: it rides behind your shoulder. It's it's vertical, You're right,
- 35:00Speaker 1: is vertical behind your shoulders strapped to your pack like
- 35:04Speaker 1: total hands free. There's this little tab. You can kind
- 35:07Speaker 1: of like talk into your shoulder strap or whatever. And
- 35:10Speaker 1: when you pop that tab, it's like you're pulling a parachute.
- 35:13Speaker 1: You pop that tab and your rifles free. Really does
- 35:17Speaker 1: it come down into like a like a field ready, No,
- 35:19Speaker 1: it's like you pop it. Then you kind of reach
- 35:21Speaker 1: over your shoulder and grab the barrel or whatever, grab
- 35:28Speaker 1: the stock or barrel. Everyone just lifted out of the
- 35:30Speaker 1: I mean, I would like to see that work, because yeah,
- 35:33Speaker 1: I have a hard time imagining that's what is? Why
- 35:36Speaker 1: is How's that better than a sling. It's not better sling.
- 35:38Speaker 1: It's worse than a sling. Oh, I thought you would
- 35:41Speaker 1: arguing this for having no total hands free. Well, it's
- 35:46Speaker 1: better in the sense that, like even a sling requires
- 35:48Speaker 1: some care, you know, every couple of minutes. And so
- 35:52Speaker 1: this is like intermediate. It's either in your pack and
- 35:55Speaker 1: for all intents and purposes, you have no gun. Right,
- 35:58Speaker 1: this is like halfway between. Yes, okay, okay, I got it.
- 36:02Speaker 1: It's like, man, this is a long ship hike. Yeah,
- 36:07Speaker 1: and I'm always whatever need in my hands two take
- 36:12Speaker 1: leaks and open gates and whatnot. And you just put
- 36:14Speaker 1: the thing on there and then but if I have to,
- 36:18Speaker 1: I'll pull that ripcord. Yeah, I've done it, and I
- 36:23Speaker 1: keep my ripcord handy. I haven't. I've never had to
- 36:25Speaker 1: do a quick release. But everybody's fits there. You never
- 36:30Speaker 1: got a dear as a kid, never got DearS kid,
- 36:32Speaker 1: No hunting up fife light you guys hunting bait. Uh
- 36:36Speaker 1: some years and then some years now because your cousin
- 36:42Speaker 1: you know a little piece of land like forty acres
- 36:44Speaker 1: up there, you head hunter safety Yep. The other time
- 36:49Speaker 1: that I went hunting, not that long ago, up on
- 36:52Speaker 1: San Juan Island with Chef Andy. We were hunting those
- 36:57Speaker 1: chef chefoot. We were hunting those uh those are Columbia
- 37:01Speaker 1: black tail up there right. So you know you can
- 37:04Speaker 1: only use a shotgun on San Juan. So I had
- 37:08Speaker 1: a shotgun and I had I was probably fifty yards
- 37:12Speaker 1: from a little buck and I had it lined up,
- 37:16Speaker 1: pulled the sugar gun. Misfiredn't it's not used here, I
- 37:21Speaker 1: swear to God, and nothing took off. So I need help, man,
- 37:28Speaker 1: I'm here for help. We'll know if we're gonna get
- 37:31Speaker 1: to your successful hunt. I know I want to get
- 37:34Speaker 1: a deer. I want to get in fact, yeah, hearing
- 37:36Speaker 1: about Matt's you know Elk hunt a couple of weeks ago.
- 37:39Speaker 1: I want to get over in Montana maybe with your brother.
- 37:43Speaker 1: You get inspired by that. I did get inspired by that.
- 37:46Speaker 1: So did the firing pin. It's not hit. It must
- 37:49Speaker 1: it must have, because yeah, because then we went somewhere
- 37:53Speaker 1: else and you know, I react and shot it. We're fine.
- 37:57Speaker 1: I don't know. You guys tried to hunt your on
- 37:58Speaker 1: sand One I own. Yeah, this is about five years ago. Oh,
- 38:02Speaker 1: I do remember this, so so you have Dilly daily. Yep,
- 38:11Speaker 1: I have. Now, I don't want to say where it was.
- 38:15Speaker 1: We're gonna say that you were just beyond the fact
- 38:17Speaker 1: that it was in North Dakota. Beyond the fact that
- 38:21Speaker 1: it was North Dakota. Um, don't get in any great
- 38:24Speaker 1: special specifics, but talk about your impressions of turkey hunting.
- 38:31Speaker 1: It was. It was so fun. I mean, it was
- 38:34Speaker 1: the most interactive kind of you know, game experience I've
- 38:39Speaker 1: ever had. I mean with fishing. I don't fly fish,
- 38:43Speaker 1: so I know that's a lot more physical and interactive,
- 38:46Speaker 1: and you're reading things differently. Oh, they'd sure like to
- 38:48Speaker 1: think it is that unless you want to go down
- 38:55Speaker 1: a real different path. Yeah, I've done it, but yeah, sure, yeah.
- 39:01Speaker 1: I mean, so, you know, with the walking out in
- 39:04Speaker 1: the woods, looking around, making those calls and then all
- 39:08Speaker 1: of a sudden hearing that response is just one of
- 39:12Speaker 1: the most exhilarating outdoor experiences I've ever had. And then
- 39:17Speaker 1: you know, posting up, putting decoys there, and then calling
- 39:21Speaker 1: him in and just what you know, the first day
- 39:24Speaker 1: we were there only about four hours and Matt called
- 39:27Speaker 1: in a big tom and just to kind of see
- 39:30Speaker 1: that thing, you know, a hundred yards out coming in
- 39:33Speaker 1: through the willow, and then all of a sudden he
- 39:35Speaker 1: got closer, you know, big plume goes up. I mean
- 39:38Speaker 1: it's just one of the most exciting things I've ever
- 39:40Speaker 1: seen outside and that that was and Pooter got him.
- 39:45Speaker 1: So then the next day we went out early in
- 39:47Speaker 1: the morning and the same kind of setup, just walking
- 39:50Speaker 1: around the woods. Got a call posted up. Yep, and
- 39:58Speaker 1: it didn't take long either. You know what they call that,
- 40:00Speaker 1: they call that spring thunder? Spring thunder? Yeah, what are
- 40:04Speaker 1: they calling the fall? They don't go. I mean some
- 40:09Speaker 1: dorks gonna write in about how they do go hobble
- 40:11Speaker 1: in the fall, and they do, but not like they're
- 40:13Speaker 1: do in the spring. Spring. They're fired up. Yeah, as
- 40:16Speaker 1: they gobble in the spring, as will Primo says, they're
- 40:19Speaker 1: out there saying this is my time of year in
- 40:23Speaker 1: the spring. Yeah, yeah, it was. It was incredible. It
- 40:26Speaker 1: was incredible. Yeah, I got a jake the next day.
- 40:29Speaker 1: It was also the first time I've ever seen a
- 40:30Speaker 1: turkey fly. That was interesting, really impressive. Were you where
- 40:35Speaker 1: they could fly? I knew they could fly? What are
- 40:37Speaker 1: they like? A gallanaceous bird? Right, And I knew they
- 40:41Speaker 1: could fly, but they can't fly along, right, They don't
- 40:44Speaker 1: fly a long distances. But just to see him fly
- 40:47Speaker 1: like they were, they were much more agile than I
- 40:50Speaker 1: than I would have expected. Yeah, I would never accuse
- 40:52Speaker 1: him of loving to fly. Yeah, powerful flyers. I mean
- 40:59Speaker 1: as far as just like the amount of energy and
- 41:01Speaker 1: noise and just like uh yeah, when they take flight.
- 41:05Speaker 1: It's not a subtle thing. Now, you know, you know
- 41:07Speaker 1: what you like fl you know what you're like walking
- 41:10Speaker 1: through the woods and and like a grouse will scare
- 41:12Speaker 1: you to death, like a turkey is would would put
- 41:17Speaker 1: you in your grave. I mean they it sounds like
- 41:20Speaker 1: somebody shooting at you. You know when the one of
- 41:21Speaker 1: those things takes off. You know, me and my boy
- 41:23Speaker 1: were out Jimmy were out there on Sunday when I
- 41:27Speaker 1: took a little look for some small game and he
- 41:30Speaker 1: had his first getting the ship scared out and by
- 41:32Speaker 1: a rough grouse. But it blew out of a tree
- 41:35Speaker 1: about head high. But still the same fact. It's super surprising.
- 41:45Speaker 1: So that so here it comes and you level off
- 41:47Speaker 1: on him. Well, that jay got in close. He was
- 41:50Speaker 1: in god probably, I mean it seemed like ten yards.
- 41:56Speaker 1: He was right, he was right there, maybe even closer.
- 41:58Speaker 1: I mean he was. He was super close and U
- 42:00Speaker 1: coming right up to that decoy. And so this is
- 42:03Speaker 1: the first time you've ever fired a shot because you've
- 42:06Speaker 1: tried one, you screwed up because you're sling. Then you
- 42:09Speaker 1: had your I would argue that you did something wrong
- 42:12Speaker 1: with your shotgun. I would I would respectfully disagree, but
- 42:19Speaker 1: I no way to tell. Can we fack out to
- 42:21Speaker 1: the shotgun question real quick? I don't want it? Well,
- 42:24Speaker 1: did you look at the primer? Was the primer dimpled?
- 42:27Speaker 1: I was gonna ask that. Was there a strike mark
- 42:29Speaker 1: on the primer? There was? All right, right, but not
- 42:34Speaker 1: even You know, it's funny we're muzzlower hunting is here
- 42:39Speaker 1: in in Maryland and I heard a guy off the
- 42:43Speaker 1: swamp half a have we're just a cap? Have just
- 42:48Speaker 1: either the pan or the cap? What time? It's like
- 42:50Speaker 1: you know you're hearing right now, and then like boom,
- 42:52Speaker 1: you know this thing's allowed right, it's like real like
- 42:55Speaker 1: And also went off the swab here where the guy's
- 42:58Speaker 1: cat went off in a dignite. It was like prime time.
- 43:01Speaker 1: It was like this dude was shooting at a dude
- 43:04Speaker 1: was definitely shooting. It was like he was just getting
- 43:06Speaker 1: rid of the so um any feelings of remorse or anything, like,
- 43:13Speaker 1: what was your emotion? Pure, pure exhilaration, just you know, Well,
- 43:17Speaker 1: I was nervous because I was like, all right, I
- 43:19Speaker 1: felt like the twenty year weight of history on my shoulders,
- 43:22Speaker 1: right because I've had to, like, you know, two experiences.
- 43:25Speaker 1: Do you just refer to it as your slump buster? Yeah, yeah, yeah,
- 43:30Speaker 1: for sure, Yeah I will now for sure. But yeah,
- 43:32Speaker 1: it was, I know, it felt, it felt incredible. It
- 43:34Speaker 1: was wild, like how active that bird was after it
- 43:38Speaker 1: gets shot. Oh, just I mean they don't flailing. And
- 43:43Speaker 1: then you know, it was with Matt and we ran
- 43:45Speaker 1: over there and he basically jumps on the bird and
- 43:49Speaker 1: pushing all the air out of it. I guess is
- 43:52Speaker 1: that what he's saying. Yeah, and uh yeah, no, no
- 43:55Speaker 1: feelings are remorse at all. It was it was. It was, yeah,
- 43:57Speaker 1: one of the most exciting outdoor experience I ever had.
- 44:00Speaker 1: You probably realize this. It might be counterintuitive to some folks,
- 44:04Speaker 1: but that flailing is a is a way for you
- 44:10Speaker 1: to see just how dead it is. Mhm. Because like,
- 44:17Speaker 1: the more you know, for people who haven't a turkey
- 44:20Speaker 1: when you shoot a turkey shooting and it generally like
- 44:22Speaker 1: if you had with the shotgun and shooting in the
- 44:23Speaker 1: head with a shotgun, and well when you chop the
- 44:28Speaker 1: head off a chicken, off the chop about chicken. Yeah,
- 44:32Speaker 1: So when you see that like really just explode, like
- 44:37Speaker 1: fluttering and jumping around. I don't look at that and
- 44:40Speaker 1: be like, oh, he's gonna get away. It's more like,
- 44:45Speaker 1: oh man, he's dead or and dead. I would prefer
- 44:49Speaker 1: it though, because they do sometimes just fold their wings
- 44:52Speaker 1: up and just lay over. You don't always get a
- 44:56Speaker 1: flop kind as they do just kind of just literally
- 44:58Speaker 1: fold their wings and tip over. But because a couple
- 45:03Speaker 1: of times I have seen it where it's like the
- 45:06Speaker 1: flop and they keep getting a little farther away and
- 45:08Speaker 1: they flop and all of a sudden they're flopping, but
- 45:11Speaker 1: they're on their legs and you're like shooting in any
- 45:15Speaker 1: flopping that is them going whatever they're doing, but they're
- 45:19Speaker 1: going the other way. I take that as a very
- 45:21Speaker 1: bad sign. Oh yeah, that's different than what I'm talking about.
- 45:27Speaker 1: What I'm talking about is that because they have him,
- 45:29Speaker 1: it's not a clean well he's got what okay, like
- 45:32Speaker 1: but degree circle, what are the there's right a three
- 45:37Speaker 1: sixty degree circle, and if he's picking that like fifteen
- 45:42Speaker 1: degree band that's directly away from me, I'm like, that
- 45:46Speaker 1: feels to me like, um, sure he could be doing
- 45:48Speaker 1: a general flop or there could be more to this,
- 45:52Speaker 1: and the fact that he's coincidentally chosen the opposite direction
- 45:56Speaker 1: to do that in I get like real nervous, But
- 45:59Speaker 1: I don't think they look that different for a second,
- 46:01Speaker 1: you know what I mean. That's what I'm saying, Like
- 46:03Speaker 1: general protocol is like pull the segger. As soon as
- 46:07Speaker 1: he's like flopping or whatever's going on, I'm up on
- 46:09Speaker 1: my feet and gaining some grounds. You'll never be glad
- 46:13Speaker 1: that you didn't run over there. There's no like pro
- 46:17Speaker 1: to not running over there. All I'm really trying to
- 46:20Speaker 1: say is birds flop around a whole bunch as evans by.
- 46:26Speaker 1: If you've ever dispatched chickens, It doesn't mean that he's
- 46:31Speaker 1: like kind of still alive, that's all. Yeah, But no
- 46:35Speaker 1: bad feelings, No, No, it did surprise me the day
- 46:39Speaker 1: before when Peoter got that Tom how fast Matt was
- 46:43Speaker 1: running towards that bird. Once Pewter shot like exactly like
- 46:46Speaker 1: you said, you honest, like he was sprint into that bird.
- 46:49Speaker 1: That surprised me. I wasn't expecting that, but I lost
- 46:51Speaker 1: the turkey. Ones hit him, assumed that he was down
- 46:57Speaker 1: and didn't get older fast enough. We were on a
- 47:00Speaker 1: very steep slope and he pitched off that slope and
- 47:03Speaker 1: just vanished. Really, you couldn't even begin to go look
- 47:07Speaker 1: for him. What was down the slope like a thick
- 47:11Speaker 1: some big mountainside. Oh oh jeez, and he like went down.
- 47:16Speaker 1: I was like, oh, I got a turkey. The thing
- 47:18Speaker 1: took two steps and it was a steep pitch, like
- 47:20Speaker 1: I said, took two steps, pitched off that hill and
- 47:23Speaker 1: it was just just gone. Now only one time I've
- 47:30Speaker 1: seen one shot that covered ground faster than anything I've
- 47:33Speaker 1: ever seen, Like my buddy Eddie shot too, and the
- 47:36Speaker 1: second one was only winged or whatever. And that thing vanished.
- 47:41Speaker 1: I mean it, I saw it running when we couldn't
- 47:43Speaker 1: throw down on it, and I was just like, I
- 47:45Speaker 1: was pretty impressed with its track abilities. I mean that
- 47:48Speaker 1: thing was yeah, tootles, you never found him, never found it.
- 47:54Speaker 1: Did not look and actually just you know, miss Aim
- 47:57Speaker 1: because if you don't hit him in the head of
- 47:58Speaker 1: the neck and he just body shoot to mean you
- 48:00Speaker 1: just get that big puff of feathers. I mean, you
- 48:03Speaker 1: might have a few pellets that we've their way in there,
- 48:05Speaker 1: but a lot of times not lethal fits. Were you
- 48:09Speaker 1: field questions about your wife? Uh? Yeah, Can I hear
- 48:12Speaker 1: some first before I decided your wife? Your wife eats seafood.
- 48:18Speaker 1: She does doesn't like red meat. Would she have eaten
- 48:21Speaker 1: the turkey you shot? Probably not. The only time she's
- 48:26Speaker 1: eaten meat in the last fift twenty years was in
- 48:31Speaker 1: Montana when we were helping out at your brother's wedding
- 48:34Speaker 1: making all that elk Ravioli and she accidentally ate one.
- 48:38Speaker 1: Now she she's like, I guess maybe just we just
- 48:40Speaker 1: worked too hard in that kitchen, and she's like, screw it,
- 48:42Speaker 1: I'm gonna eat one. Yeah, she didn't. She liked it,
- 48:45Speaker 1: but I don't think she would eat the turkey, but
- 48:46Speaker 1: she likes to eat fish. M hmm. What what do
- 48:51Speaker 1: you think is going on there? I understand it, yeah,
- 48:55Speaker 1: I mean not not. Yeah, It's like, you know, I've
- 48:57Speaker 1: known people like that in my whole life. She's known
- 49:00Speaker 1: at a very young age that meat was not for her,
- 49:02Speaker 1: Like she was a kid, you know who was complaining
- 49:05Speaker 1: to her parents about anything that was meat at the table,
- 49:08Speaker 1: and it was just a you know, it's just it's
- 49:10Speaker 1: just a essential part of who she is. Meanwhile, you
- 49:13Speaker 1: have a shirt on that's a meat chart over cow.
- 49:19Speaker 1: I like meat. So you feel that the turkey wasn't
- 49:24Speaker 1: gonna it probably wouldn't. No, I probably wouldn't do it.
- 49:28Speaker 1: Maybe if I got a bigger animal, maybe maybe maybe.
- 49:32Speaker 1: I mean she's eating milk. So so do you picture
- 49:35Speaker 1: now that you will go on more outings, more hunting trips.
- 49:39Speaker 1: I would like to. Yeah, I would definitely like to. Um,
- 49:43Speaker 1: you know, part of the reason that I haven't done
- 49:44Speaker 1: it regularly is that I feel like I've always kind
- 49:47Speaker 1: of been a little out of my element doing it.
- 49:51Speaker 1: You know, I didn't grow up hunting. I didn't have
- 49:55Speaker 1: like a you know, a brother who took me hunting
- 49:56Speaker 1: or anything like that, or even friends until I met
- 49:58Speaker 1: you guys were and uh so you know, it wasn't
- 50:02Speaker 1: something that I felt I had a lot of agency
- 50:04Speaker 1: to do on my own. And uh, you know, it's
- 50:08Speaker 1: like do you ever play poker or a black jack
- 50:11Speaker 1: at a at a casino. Yes, no, because I feel
- 50:14Speaker 1: too out of my owner exactly like you don't want
- 50:17Speaker 1: to screw up everybody's else's you know, game, right, And
- 50:20Speaker 1: I kind of feel I felt like that way for
- 50:23Speaker 1: a long time about hunting. I don't want to go
- 50:24Speaker 1: out there and mess up somebody else's situation. Yeah, that's
- 50:30Speaker 1: a good analogy, man, because I'd like to play black jack,
- 50:34Speaker 1: or used to not like, but we would play black
- 50:36Speaker 1: jack at two dollar tables because you go there and
- 50:39Speaker 1: everybody at the table sucks. But then when you go
- 50:42Speaker 1: on your with serious players, right, you become like very
- 50:46Speaker 1: self aware at black jack, Like how do you say,
- 50:51Speaker 1: like all these guys suck, suck at what okay? Deciding
- 50:55Speaker 1: if you hit or st and that they have like
- 50:58Speaker 1: real set opinions about stuff out what you stay on.
- 51:01Speaker 1: So like you could be playing black jack and I'm
- 51:03Speaker 1: not like dr black Jack. But there are people who
- 51:06Speaker 1: are suspicious enough for irrational enough to be that if
- 51:10Speaker 1: you took a hit, that's illogical, that you have disturbed
- 51:16Speaker 1: the cosmos and have robbed them of the card that
- 51:20Speaker 1: would have been theirs, and it will be mad at
- 51:23Speaker 1: you because if you knew what you were doing, you'd
- 51:27Speaker 1: have known to never take that hit. Therefore you have
- 51:30Speaker 1: offset this thing that was in motion between the stars
- 51:35Speaker 1: and the universe. And so what you're saying is those
- 51:39Speaker 1: are tables. Like it's not that the people suck, it's
- 51:41Speaker 1: that the odds that somebody's gonna come play at that
- 51:44Speaker 1: table who sucks and messes it up for everybody else
- 51:47Speaker 1: is higher. Like you could you could have people. I mean,
- 51:51Speaker 1: when I sit down, if I was gonna sit at
- 51:53Speaker 1: one of those tables, and I have to go to
- 51:54Speaker 1: Las Vegas every year for work one and I always
- 51:57Speaker 1: really bad want to do it. You want to go
- 51:59Speaker 1: play black time? Yeah, but like fits where I feel
- 52:02Speaker 1: like I will take too long. I don't really understand
- 52:07Speaker 1: when to do what that they'll have some irrational blow
- 52:10Speaker 1: hard get like pissed about something I did, and and
- 52:15Speaker 1: and because it doesn't really really mean that much to me,
- 52:18Speaker 1: I just sometimes don't unless I see a table where
- 52:21Speaker 1: no one's there, or I'm with a couple of buddies
- 52:23Speaker 1: of mine, Like last year, me and Yanni threw down
- 52:25Speaker 1: for a long time because we just had our own
- 52:28Speaker 1: little scene. Yeah, we had the whole table, well, maybe
- 52:31Speaker 1: five out of six spots We had like five or
- 52:33Speaker 1: six guys that we all knew each other, and so
- 52:35Speaker 1: we could go play and I didn't need to feel
- 52:38Speaker 1: like I was like inserting myself into this this thing
- 52:40Speaker 1: that was going on my unprofessional to get good. Eventually,
- 52:46Speaker 1: Like you're watching the cards so much that you sort
- 52:48Speaker 1: of in a way start to count cards, right, so
- 52:52Speaker 1: you kind of know what's been coming out, and so
- 52:54Speaker 1: you're sort of like, but no, it's like six decks.
- 52:58Speaker 1: I mean, you can't. You can get in trouble for
- 53:00Speaker 1: own cards. If you can go play at Binions or
- 53:02Speaker 1: go playing some of the old school casinos and they'll
- 53:04Speaker 1: play single deck blackjack, that would be different, and I
- 53:07Speaker 1: would allow that that would be very higher minimum bet.
- 53:10Speaker 1: Are you play poker house? Odds are bad if you're
- 53:15Speaker 1: playing against another player. I just don't. Yeah, I like
- 53:19Speaker 1: poker a lot. Do you win a lot of money
- 53:20Speaker 1: at board? No? No, I don't. Haven't played in quite
- 53:23Speaker 1: a while, but I played a little bit. It's fun.
- 53:25Speaker 1: Why why do you like a professional football? But? Wow,
- 53:29Speaker 1: that's a jump. I don't know. I've always they don't
- 53:33Speaker 1: know you, they don't like you, they don't live they're
- 53:36Speaker 1: not from here. I was born. I've been playing football
- 53:39Speaker 1: since I was you know, a kid up. They're not
- 53:43Speaker 1: from here, He's trying to explain. So he called me
- 53:45Speaker 1: and asked me to go fishing on a night there
- 53:47Speaker 1: was a Seahawks getting like, oh, I'm going to the
- 53:49Speaker 1: football game, and he could not wrap his head around
- 53:55Speaker 1: the morning. Yeah, senilities, I don't know. I just I've
- 54:00Speaker 1: always love football. I get I'm emotionally invested. I mean
- 54:03Speaker 1: in people that you don't know, you know, who are
- 54:08Speaker 1: just I played team sports all the way through college.
- 54:10Speaker 1: I mean, I just always been attracted to it, and
- 54:14Speaker 1: I never to play at that level. But yeah, I
- 54:16Speaker 1: know you're right and I'm wrong because everybody likes sports, Jimmy,
- 54:20Speaker 1: I would feel remiss if I didn't stick up for
- 54:22Speaker 1: you a little bit here because I don't even have
- 54:25Speaker 1: Like I didn't grow up watching football and I never
- 54:29Speaker 1: played it, but I like it now as an adult.
- 54:32Speaker 1: I like watching football. I have a team that I
- 54:36Speaker 1: hope wins. I hope wins a game. I can't explain it.
- 54:39Speaker 1: What team is it? It's the Green Bay Packers. Really, yeah,
- 54:42Speaker 1: that's cool. They're pretty good. Why but you're from I
- 54:49Speaker 1: can't I can't leave Jimmy didn't have hung out to
- 54:52Speaker 1: dry because I'm even everybody on the planet, I know,
- 54:57Speaker 1: I know. So I've had another friend of our got
- 55:00Speaker 1: into watching football and he's like, because I hate TV
- 55:03Speaker 1: so bad, I find myself that I'm in front of
- 55:05Speaker 1: a TV. It's the It's the most genuine seeming thing
- 55:08Speaker 1: to me, the football, Like watching the game. It just
- 55:12Speaker 1: feels like you're actually watching something genuine. Yeah, it was
- 55:17Speaker 1: an early childhood like it's like honest and genuine. It's
- 55:20Speaker 1: a contest. I mean it's but you're right. I mean,
- 55:23Speaker 1: they don't know you, they don't you know. I can't
- 55:26Speaker 1: even explain it, but I do recognize now as an
- 55:29Speaker 1: adult that I enjoy it. Yeah, but for me, it's
- 55:33Speaker 1: just always been there. Like corn Husker football on Saturday
- 55:36Speaker 1: mornings is one of my earliest memories. I was probably
- 55:39Speaker 1: for you know, so Cornhuskers like the hand lotion. No,
- 55:45Speaker 1: you're funny, now, you just pissed off everybody in the brasket.
- 55:49Speaker 1: There's a team Cornhuskers go big red really professional football
- 55:55Speaker 1: tea no, no, no, college college football. Alright, it feels
- 55:59Speaker 1: so bad, but not on about him. Um okay, now,
- 56:03Speaker 1: Jimmy Dorran can you lay out you're Can you explain
- 56:07Speaker 1: a little bit about your Oregon hunting? Sure, it was easy,
- 56:10Speaker 1: it was great. What the trip the hunt itself? Yeah,
- 56:13Speaker 1: just kind of how it goes down. Um, buddy's got
- 56:17Speaker 1: a great big place. And how I met him, Russ,
- 56:21Speaker 1: I met him at your restaurant. Yeah, I was tending
- 56:23Speaker 1: bar and this is probably like the mid nineties. I
- 56:26Speaker 1: was still tending bar before I owned the place. And
- 56:30Speaker 1: he came in with another buddy of mine and we
- 56:32Speaker 1: started talking about fly fishing, and then it was, hey,
- 56:34Speaker 1: you want to go fishing. And we've been good friends
- 56:38Speaker 1: ever since. And uh, bunch trips and I guess I
- 56:43Speaker 1: want to say around two thousand or something, his dad
- 56:46Speaker 1: bought a great, big, huge place kind of by fossil
- 56:50Speaker 1: oregan cattle range. Uh, it big. The previous owner did
- 56:55Speaker 1: grace cattle on there. Um, there's some light egg, there's
- 56:58Speaker 1: some wheat, and there's some hay and stuff there. But
- 57:00Speaker 1: it was just mostly recreational n they do. He has
- 57:04Speaker 1: a he has an agreement with his neighbor that we
- 57:07Speaker 1: can hunt on his property if we allow them to
- 57:09Speaker 1: graze cattle on his So it's kind of a good
- 57:12Speaker 1: you know, it's a good handshake deal. That's that's lasted
- 57:15Speaker 1: quite a long time. And uh so we get to
- 57:18Speaker 1: you know, just so that that that's the deal. That
- 57:21Speaker 1: is the deal. Grazes. He grazes your buddy's land and
- 57:23Speaker 1: your buddy gets hunt his land. That's correct. Yes, it's
- 57:26Speaker 1: a great spot. I mean the John Dave River runs
- 57:28Speaker 1: right through the middle, smacked out through the middle of it.
- 57:30Speaker 1: So there's fantastic small mouth fishing and steelhead right now,
- 57:34Speaker 1: and um every kind of bird you wanted to shoot
- 57:37Speaker 1: more or less. Uh, and fantastic elk cunting. There's chucker.
- 57:42Speaker 1: There's a couple of pothole ponds, so they're stucks. You
- 57:45Speaker 1: can shoot for sure, not as many. I mean you
- 57:47Speaker 1: walk down and pop couple in the morning. That's about
- 57:49Speaker 1: the extent of or day. I he jumps, shoot him,
- 57:52Speaker 1: Um a lot of times you can actually you can
- 57:54Speaker 1: push him back and forth if there's actually between the
- 57:56Speaker 1: whole Have you guys done that where you're going? We
- 57:57Speaker 1: used to do that in stock ponds. Now and then
- 57:59Speaker 1: instead of going in are trying to kick him off
- 58:02Speaker 1: and take a shot, Just kick him off, throw two
- 58:05Speaker 1: decoys out and hide and wait yeah, they come, I
- 58:08Speaker 1: don't even leave. You'll see him circling way out and
- 58:12Speaker 1: then like all those dudes are gone now, So I was,
- 58:17Speaker 1: what's that? But they're not gone, they're hunger. Um just uh,
- 58:24Speaker 1: pretty easy two yards uphill shot. One just came around
- 58:27Speaker 1: the bend. It was skylit, perfect beautiful, perfect symmetrical four
- 58:32Speaker 1: point buck and it took one look at me and
- 58:35Speaker 1: that was the end of that. It was just it
- 58:37Speaker 1: was really easy and dragged it downhill. It was like
- 58:41Speaker 1: one of the most There wasn't a pack out. It
- 58:43Speaker 1: was a hundred and fifty yard downhill, dragged to my
- 58:47Speaker 1: truck and then strung it up. So do you feel
- 58:50Speaker 1: that kind of the hunting donners making you pretty soft?
- 58:53Speaker 1: I agree. I had occasion to go out on a
- 58:58Speaker 1: high buck hunt in the Passade and at the beginning
- 59:00Speaker 1: of the season, and I was a little unprepared and
- 59:04Speaker 1: I was a little disappointed at my level of being
- 59:07Speaker 1: a bit to be honest on some of it. We
- 59:09Speaker 1: got there and I had kind of ms rett a
- 59:11Speaker 1: forecast and you know, probably good idea to look not
- 59:15Speaker 1: the valley floor, but actually where you're gonna start going in,
- 59:19Speaker 1: and we rode horses in like sixteen miles way back
- 59:22Speaker 1: in there, and I'd kind of not I'd read the
- 59:26Speaker 1: brochure and whatnot, and the outfitter was just great people,
- 59:31Speaker 1: but you know it was they kicked the wallton off
- 59:33Speaker 1: the off the side of the mules and then we
- 59:35Speaker 1: got in late and drop off drop hunt. Yeah. So
- 59:39Speaker 1: you you hired an outfitter to pack you in, but
- 59:41Speaker 1: then he just drops you off pretty much you're looking
- 59:44Speaker 1: country and then you're like two seeing a week and uh,
- 59:48Speaker 1: sixteen miles in Yeah, And I hadn't ridden a horse,
- 59:52Speaker 1: and I mean I had ridden a horse fairly recently,
- 59:55Speaker 1: but not that far. I just I was surprised where
- 59:57Speaker 1: I hurt the next day? Yeah, your buttocks region, my knees.
- 1:00:00Speaker 1: Where was the weird thing even? Yeah? And uh but
- 1:00:04Speaker 1: we woke up and I was with my really good
- 1:00:06Speaker 1: friend of mine, Henry, who just was amped about the
- 1:00:08Speaker 1: whole deal, and it just man, I woke up cold
- 1:00:11Speaker 1: and I thought I read cot not bring a cot.
- 1:00:14Speaker 1: I read there was. Yeah. So the setting up the
- 1:00:21Speaker 1: tent and they had had this big burn band and
- 1:00:23Speaker 1: the whole hunt cana came off late because the area
- 1:00:26Speaker 1: was closed and the outfit really had to put the
- 1:00:28Speaker 1: screws to the Forest Service to get him to let
- 1:00:30Speaker 1: him go back in there. They close fire season, they
- 1:00:34Speaker 1: were the whole, the whole they had closed the whole
- 1:00:36Speaker 1: wilderness area anyway, so you know, nothing was set up.
- 1:00:40Speaker 1: We kind of got in. There was a burn band,
- 1:00:42Speaker 1: so we weren't allowed to make a fire. And then
- 1:00:45Speaker 1: you know it was it was really it was pretty cold.
- 1:00:47Speaker 1: First day, a sleeping on the ground and dude, you
- 1:00:50Speaker 1: sounded awful right now, Yeah, it wasn't. I wasn't super jack.
- 1:00:53Speaker 1: I mean whatever just saw from this or no, no, no,
- 1:00:58Speaker 1: I think it's accumulation of a lot of So so
- 1:01:00Speaker 1: what wound up going on there? What happened were seeing
- 1:01:03Speaker 1: big giant bucks run round. Didn't see you buck? Saw
- 1:01:05Speaker 1: about fifteen dose total, saw one spike, but it's a
- 1:01:10Speaker 1: three point minimum. How like if you had on a
- 1:01:12Speaker 1: sliding scale of one to temp, how hard were you hunting? Uh?
- 1:01:18Speaker 1: I would say about a nine. I mean he had
- 1:01:19Speaker 1: to do, you know, you two thousand vertical to get
- 1:01:24Speaker 1: to where he wanted to glass. You had to get
- 1:01:26Speaker 1: up in the morning and do that in the dark.
- 1:01:27Speaker 1: And then the second day it snowed nine inches, so
- 1:01:31Speaker 1: throw that into the mix days jab six. You stuck
- 1:01:36Speaker 1: it out for six hunt days. It was either that
- 1:01:37Speaker 1: or walk sixteen miles out there, made you know. And
- 1:01:41Speaker 1: I actually had all of that from funny thing too,
- 1:01:43Speaker 1: I'll admit it. But like I had all my ship
- 1:01:45Speaker 1: packed and I looked at it on the map in
- 1:01:47Speaker 1: the whole area, part of a specificresh trail, and I
- 1:01:50Speaker 1: knew where my truck was. And I got to thinking
- 1:01:53Speaker 1: because my feet, my feet got wet on the second
- 1:01:56Speaker 1: morning and they didn't dry out, and we kicked the
- 1:02:00Speaker 1: whole no fire thing to that. We're like underground. I'm
- 1:02:04Speaker 1: pretty sure. I'm like, they want to write me to
- 1:02:05Speaker 1: take it, I'll go to court on this one. And uh,
- 1:02:08Speaker 1: you know, we made a fire, got kind of comfortable,
- 1:02:10Speaker 1: but you know, I didn't really get warm for about
- 1:02:12Speaker 1: a week. Did you get some of wood stove? No,
- 1:02:16Speaker 1: but went old stove. Yeah. Weren't allowed to bring in
- 1:02:19Speaker 1: a stove. Oh, I see, because of the band. So
- 1:02:23Speaker 1: I was just kind of all thrown together at the
- 1:02:24Speaker 1: last second. And my buddy Henry's really super just nice guy, resilient.
- 1:02:28Speaker 1: He really tolerated me being a ship head for a
- 1:02:30Speaker 1: couple of days because I'm sure it wasn't too fun
- 1:02:32Speaker 1: to be around, but it was up and down. I
- 1:02:35Speaker 1: mean it was according to my iPhone, it was, you know,
- 1:02:39Speaker 1: eighty stories a day and it's straight up looking around
- 1:02:43Speaker 1: for you your ass off for six hours. And I
- 1:02:46Speaker 1: got good at taking a nap when I was cold.
- 1:02:49Speaker 1: But it was great. It was you know, it was
- 1:02:50Speaker 1: a hard hunt. Um, ridiculously beautiful place. I'm going back,
- 1:02:55Speaker 1: but spit. I'm sure it's that gonna be well, you
- 1:02:59Speaker 1: know I'm eating hot. Yeah, well, I'll bring a cot.
- 1:03:02Speaker 1: And I had also misread. I thought it was fifty
- 1:03:04Speaker 1: pounds of gear per person. So I got like mountain
- 1:03:07Speaker 1: house and my jet boil. And this other group of
- 1:03:09Speaker 1: hunters came and they literally brought like RVs worth of ship.
- 1:03:13Speaker 1: Like they had boxes and you know, eight days worth
- 1:03:16Speaker 1: of prep food and coolers and pack alongs, and you know,
- 1:03:21Speaker 1: I had my one little and he dropped those guys
- 1:03:24Speaker 1: off on top of your camp. No, he dropped us first.
- 1:03:28Speaker 1: And that's another reason why he just the wall tent
- 1:03:30Speaker 1: went off here you go, because it was getting dark
- 1:03:33Speaker 1: and they had another three and a half miles to go.
- 1:03:37Speaker 1: So we were hunting in this one big basin and
- 1:03:39Speaker 1: they were in the next so there's just only two
- 1:03:43Speaker 1: groups and normally he has like six or seven groups.
- 1:03:45Speaker 1: So it was beautiful and it was it was worth
- 1:03:49Speaker 1: every penny and I'm gonna do it again. And uh,
- 1:03:52Speaker 1: you know, I've apologized to my buddy a bunch of
- 1:03:54Speaker 1: times for yeah kill No, we didn't kill you never
- 1:04:00Speaker 1: saw anything but a spike. There are those guys, dude,
- 1:04:03Speaker 1: the Washington high buck Hunt. Man, the more I talked
- 1:04:06Speaker 1: to people about it and even you're stirring inspiring story there.
- 1:04:10Speaker 1: Um No, it was just it's the same one that
- 1:04:15Speaker 1: Carmen was talking about. Well, yeah, in that it's an
- 1:04:19Speaker 1: early season high buck hunt. Dude, I'm gonna get weight.
- 1:04:22Speaker 1: I'm gonna become like Joe high Buck. I think I'm
- 1:04:27Speaker 1: gonna change my name to Joe high Buck. You're funny.
- 1:04:31Speaker 1: I am so fired up about the high Buck Hunt.
- 1:04:33Speaker 1: I'll show you where I went and Ei, there's no
- 1:04:35Speaker 1: way that you don't love it. It is just absolutely beautiful,
- 1:04:40Speaker 1: like ridiculously gorgeous, and there's tracks and I'll go with you. Dude.
- 1:04:47Speaker 1: I'm glad you're still doing that because I'm starting to
- 1:04:49Speaker 1: feel that, um like the Oregon private land hunt you
- 1:04:53Speaker 1: go on. As fun as it sounds, it just seems
- 1:04:54Speaker 1: like it's gonna make a spoiled brand out. I went
- 1:04:57Speaker 1: to Montana as well, and that was legit. I mean
- 1:04:59Speaker 1: there's some walking around at least, you know, it wasn't
- 1:05:03Speaker 1: nearly as easy. So I mean, I'm fortunate enough to
- 1:05:06Speaker 1: go to this place in Oregon. It's just lousy with deer.
- 1:05:09Speaker 1: I mean there's yeah, it's hard to not go. It's yeah,
- 1:05:12Speaker 1: I'm gonna go as long as they keep letting me go. Yeah,
- 1:05:15Speaker 1: there's a lot of public land hunters out there who
- 1:05:17Speaker 1: hunt public lands. They don't have any better option. There's
- 1:05:20Speaker 1: a ton of public rare dude who goes to the heart,
- 1:05:23Speaker 1: Like who could go to like a gravy spot but
- 1:05:26Speaker 1: chooses to go to a ship spot. I agree, that's
- 1:05:29Speaker 1: a rare MANH Yeah, I'm lucky to get to go there.
- 1:05:32Speaker 1: They're the nicest people and uh, you know, fortunately get
- 1:05:35Speaker 1: to shoot stuff most of the time, or at least
- 1:05:37Speaker 1: see stuff, you know. So, um, Montana was really good
- 1:05:41Speaker 1: to me again this year. So I had tags in
- 1:05:43Speaker 1: Oregon and I bought tags in Montana, Washington. Tag in Washington.
- 1:05:48Speaker 1: That's soup and uh, just because, to be honest, the
- 1:05:53Speaker 1: freezer is full, and I didn't really feel that that
- 1:05:55Speaker 1: was okay tag to burns. It's forty bucks, but you
- 1:05:58Speaker 1: don't burn Montana or again, when you're talking six bills
- 1:06:01Speaker 1: or whatever, you're gonna have something to show for it. Yeah,
- 1:06:04Speaker 1: I'm gonna put a little bit more effort into that
- 1:06:06Speaker 1: for sure. So Montana was fantastic this year. That was
- 1:06:09Speaker 1: a good hunt with a good shot, and yeah, I'm
- 1:06:14Speaker 1: gonna tear it at high Back hunt a new one. Man.
- 1:06:16Speaker 1: We're gonna sit down. I've been living here a couple
- 1:06:19Speaker 1: of years now and haven't gone. You're more than welcome
- 1:06:21Speaker 1: to come along. I'm always run around doing on the junk.
- 1:06:24Speaker 1: It's the fifteenths right in the kills one for you there,
- 1:06:26Speaker 1: it's the fifteenth September to It's like the time when
- 1:06:30Speaker 1: there's the most stuff to do, right as well, what's
- 1:06:33Speaker 1: the elevation for that out here? Went in at seventy
- 1:06:36Speaker 1: seven and I got as high as I want to say,
- 1:06:40Speaker 1: tickling nine thousand. But don't quote me, quote me. I
- 1:06:43Speaker 1: know I'll be wrong there because you said he rolled
- 1:06:45Speaker 1: in for sixteen miles and you climbed to vert two
- 1:06:48Speaker 1: thousand vertical from your ten you've been up on the
- 1:06:50Speaker 1: top of Everest by that. We did passes. We went
- 1:06:53Speaker 1: over three different passes to get to where we were hunting,
- 1:06:56Speaker 1: which no, no, not fiving got your journalism live? How
- 1:07:02Speaker 1: many people listening to this? How many emails you get
- 1:07:04Speaker 1: if I lie? Yeah? What what the charge you eight
- 1:07:11Speaker 1: hundred bucks? Eight hundred bucks you gotta for the two
- 1:07:15Speaker 1: of you? You gotta tent out of the deal? Yeah,
- 1:07:19Speaker 1: pretty much. I think it would have been a little
- 1:07:20Speaker 1: bit more custy. Like I said, it was closed and
- 1:07:23Speaker 1: he wasn't allowed in there, and we got like the
- 1:07:26Speaker 1: eleventh hour call to go. I should also segue with
- 1:07:29Speaker 1: the whole story started with I thought it was done.
- 1:07:32Speaker 1: I thought we weren't going. I thought it had been canceled.
- 1:07:34Speaker 1: I just assumed my deposit or whatever we go for
- 1:07:36Speaker 1: the next year. But I get like, and it was
- 1:07:39Speaker 1: on the heels of a Seahawks game where I might
- 1:07:41Speaker 1: have had a couple of beers. They not to read
- 1:07:45Speaker 1: the brochure. I get the phone call, Hey, we're going,
- 1:07:50Speaker 1: like we're going like in a couple of hours, and
- 1:07:52Speaker 1: I'm like, he ain't go nowhere. What are you even
- 1:07:54Speaker 1: talking about it's canceled. Nope, it's open. It's good. And
- 1:07:58Speaker 1: they had to you know, throw everything together when normally
- 1:08:00Speaker 1: they would have had several weeks to prepare and uh
- 1:08:04Speaker 1: so we showed up and he was still putting bridles
- 1:08:07Speaker 1: on meals and stuff. So it wasn't it wasn't all
- 1:08:11Speaker 1: the way dialed and we left it. We started in
- 1:08:13Speaker 1: at one o'clock when we definitely should have been starting
- 1:08:16Speaker 1: in it about eight thirty in the morning at the latest. So,
- 1:08:18Speaker 1: I mean, it's just the whole thing was like, you know,
- 1:08:20Speaker 1: we got there and of course the last two miles
- 1:08:25Speaker 1: you know, started raining like God was angry. I mean,
- 1:08:27Speaker 1: it was just like it was a cold, wet from
- 1:08:30Speaker 1: jump and you just you know, I love it. You
- 1:08:35Speaker 1: love it. Yeah, that makes one of us like I'm not,
- 1:08:39Speaker 1: you know, love it all. In hindsight. Yeah, generally, I
- 1:08:45Speaker 1: think we've had this conversation. Were the ones that you
- 1:08:47Speaker 1: remember are the ones that you know potentially sucked the worst,
- 1:08:50Speaker 1: but you wax, you know, nostalgic or reminisced about how
- 1:08:53Speaker 1: awesome it was. H the harder I worked for definitely,
- 1:08:57Speaker 1: the better I feel. If I'm successful. Yeah, when you're
- 1:09:00Speaker 1: an old man getting there. So in a couple of
- 1:09:03Speaker 1: years on your deathbed, dying, right, you're not gonna be like,
- 1:09:09Speaker 1: oh man, that one time man, that was a short
- 1:09:12Speaker 1: pack out on Buddy's place, cold beer and the cup holder. No,
- 1:09:20Speaker 1: you're gonna be like thinking back to that, that mountain,
- 1:09:24Speaker 1: that rainy, snowy, no camp fire mountain. I'll do it
- 1:09:29Speaker 1: better next year. I'll definitely be better prepared. And you know,
- 1:09:31Speaker 1: I owe my buddy one because he definitely was very tolerant.
- 1:09:35Speaker 1: So I want to go on the trip with you.
- 1:09:38Speaker 1: You are invited. I'll show you on a map you
- 1:09:41Speaker 1: look over, yeah, al right, and then finally, uh, Matt Moyson,
- 1:09:47Speaker 1: you had a harrowing trip. No you don't think it's
- 1:09:50Speaker 1: harrowing though, No, not really, not really. It would be
- 1:09:53Speaker 1: the shortest story, for sure. I hunted. It was hard.
- 1:10:00Speaker 1: I did that for a while and nothing happened. But
- 1:10:06Speaker 1: I'll recap it. I mean I couldn't go where you
- 1:10:10Speaker 1: wanted to go because so much snow. Yeah, we couldn't
- 1:10:14Speaker 1: even approach it. Yeah, we weren't within Now, don't say,
- 1:10:18Speaker 1: don't say the spots don't even give like mountain ranges. Okay,
- 1:10:25Speaker 1: it was the mountains. It was the mountains of North Dakota, Dakota, Okay,
- 1:10:31Speaker 1: you're right. So we had planned to hunt. Can I
- 1:10:36Speaker 1: say the state North Dakota, okay Um where we had
- 1:10:42Speaker 1: planned to hunt, was inaccessible because of snow the high
- 1:10:45Speaker 1: mountains of That's what I'm saying, mountains of North Dakota.
- 1:10:49Speaker 1: And so we ended up having to pick another mountain range.
- 1:10:52Speaker 1: But that wasn't that didn't seem real detrimental at the time,
- 1:10:57Speaker 1: because of hunted that mountain range before, and and and
- 1:11:01Speaker 1: plenty of animals, plenty of you know, uh that that
- 1:11:05Speaker 1: doesn't seem like a limiting factor, you know, but uh,
- 1:11:09Speaker 1: we just I just couldn't quite make it work. Animals.
- 1:11:13Speaker 1: We saw animals the first two days of the trip,
- 1:11:16Speaker 1: and in fact milk yep, yep, hunt milk um, but
- 1:11:22Speaker 1: just never never put it together. How far off the
- 1:11:25Speaker 1: ones you were seeing, um like three yards. A guy,
- 1:11:35Speaker 1: one of one of the one of the guys in
- 1:11:36Speaker 1: our party missed a shot at like two seventy five.
- 1:11:39Speaker 1: I actually missed a shot on that trip. I missed
- 1:11:42Speaker 1: a head shot on a on a which is a
- 1:11:46Speaker 1: terrible shot to have to take and it was it
- 1:11:48Speaker 1: was you know, it's one of those where I thought,
- 1:11:52Speaker 1: this is either gonna go totally not my way or
- 1:11:55Speaker 1: it's going to go my way, and but it but
- 1:11:57Speaker 1: it's a crap me too. Uh if you hunted? Um, yeah,
- 1:12:05Speaker 1: I mean so it was. It was a you know,
- 1:12:10Speaker 1: low percentage shot at something that and and it's one
- 1:12:12Speaker 1: of those things like I don't know how often you
- 1:12:16Speaker 1: guys do this, but I'm always like replaying stuff in
- 1:12:20Speaker 1: my head. You ever, just like replay what happened and
- 1:12:23Speaker 1: think about what you should have done. I have any energy,
- 1:12:27Speaker 1: your time and to go forward, for all I know,
- 1:12:30Speaker 1: I m spend analyze in the past. I spent a
- 1:12:32Speaker 1: full day thinking about how I should have done that different,
- 1:12:36Speaker 1: Like what I could have done different that would have
- 1:12:39Speaker 1: let me had a shot at the body of that
- 1:12:41Speaker 1: elk and not ahead was elk in behind a blowdown
- 1:12:44Speaker 1: timber and had me dead to rights. It's like, well,
- 1:12:47Speaker 1: it's either it's either. I mean, I was standing because
- 1:12:51Speaker 1: if I bent down, she her head wasn't even visible,
- 1:12:56Speaker 1: you know, so it was I mean, anyway, it's the
- 1:12:58Speaker 1: bummer of a shot and I didn't make it. So
- 1:13:01Speaker 1: that's even bigger bummer. But that was it, you know,
- 1:13:04Speaker 1: that was the first I guess that was the first day.
- 1:13:07Speaker 1: And then after that we just weren't We just weren't
- 1:13:09Speaker 1: into animals. You could see where animals had passed through
- 1:13:13Speaker 1: in a you know, migrating from from high to low,
- 1:13:17Speaker 1: but but we didn't see any of the move like
- 1:13:20Speaker 1: being pushed down by the snow. I think so. So
- 1:13:23Speaker 1: the first there was a lot of snow and and
- 1:13:26Speaker 1: the first um, the two days before we got there,
- 1:13:31Speaker 1: and the first day we were there there was quite
- 1:13:33Speaker 1: a bit of snowfall and and and you could you
- 1:13:36Speaker 1: could see animals moving. We would be uh like before light.
- 1:13:40Speaker 1: The first day we drove past a string of cow
- 1:13:44Speaker 1: el because it was probably you know, they were they
- 1:13:47Speaker 1: were nose to butt for probably most of a mile, yeah,
- 1:13:53Speaker 1: traveling you know, like they like to travel kind of
- 1:13:55Speaker 1: at the darkhay yep. So driving in, we saw uh
- 1:14:00Speaker 1: you know on private yeah, yeah, all low down in
- 1:14:04Speaker 1: the on the farm on the yeah, um, a ton
- 1:14:09Speaker 1: of elk. And actually even from up in the mountains
- 1:14:11Speaker 1: you could you could glass way down and just pick
- 1:14:13Speaker 1: out hundreds of them in the flats. But they're so
- 1:14:17Speaker 1: far I mean there's thousands of feet below you or
- 1:14:19Speaker 1: I'm guessing you know whatever they are. Yeah, um so anyway,
- 1:14:24Speaker 1: we just you know, no one in the party ended
- 1:14:27Speaker 1: up getting an ELK. So, and how many miles are
- 1:14:29Speaker 1: you guys walking every day? I'm not very good at counting. Um,
- 1:14:35Speaker 1: I don't know, you'd probably have five or six mile days.
- 1:14:41Speaker 1: I guess, I'm I'm I don't know, I don't know.
- 1:14:44Speaker 1: It's hard for me to guess. I mean with a
- 1:14:45Speaker 1: guy who had grown up in a city, and he
- 1:14:48Speaker 1: would always talk about blocks, really just put it into
- 1:14:53Speaker 1: He would be like, even with Cariboo, would you like
- 1:14:57Speaker 1: anyone looking at a Cariboo would have no idea what
- 1:15:00Speaker 1: the city block. But he would talk about it's probably
- 1:15:01Speaker 1: like you'd be like, there's a sault bowl probably three
- 1:15:04Speaker 1: blocks away. Wow. In the distances he walked, he would
- 1:15:10Speaker 1: give you in blocks, it's bad about seven two blocks? Yeah. No,
- 1:15:18Speaker 1: I'm bad at judging that, but you know, it was
- 1:15:21Speaker 1: it's challenging country. I mean, it's it's a it's either
- 1:15:24Speaker 1: up or down. You know, if if it feels like
- 1:15:26Speaker 1: so a year walking in snow, Yeah, there was six
- 1:15:30Speaker 1: or eight inches of snow that adds to it, for sure,
- 1:15:33Speaker 1: it does. You know, I've gotten better at that later
- 1:15:36Speaker 1: in life, though better it was, I've gotten better at
- 1:15:39Speaker 1: being uncomfortable. I was not good at that as a
- 1:15:42Speaker 1: young person. I had a real problem with it. And
- 1:15:46Speaker 1: now I feel like I can just kind of chill out.
- 1:15:48Speaker 1: It's like, yeah, I know this, this sucks, but yeah,
- 1:15:53Speaker 1: being okay with trudging. Yeah, I was not good at it.
- 1:15:57Speaker 1: I really wasn't. I mean, you know me for twenty
- 1:16:00Speaker 1: two years, but I never knew years. I never thought
- 1:16:02Speaker 1: if he has a cupcake, yeh, I did no. But
- 1:16:07Speaker 1: I mean I think it's like I was fine with
- 1:16:10Speaker 1: this hunt and actually I wasn't even super bummed out
- 1:16:13Speaker 1: to not get one. I mean I just felt like, uh,
- 1:16:18Speaker 1: that's what an ELK tag is, man. You you you know, dude,
- 1:16:21Speaker 1: if you went up and just plug every time, I yeah,
- 1:16:24Speaker 1: you go look at success rates. If you go look
- 1:16:26Speaker 1: at non guided, nonresident ELK success rates, they hover like
- 1:16:31Speaker 1: around ten percent. Well, I'm in the nineties, I can
- 1:16:35Speaker 1: tell you that this year. Yeah, no, it's and I
- 1:16:39Speaker 1: know I'm I was okay with it. I mean it
- 1:16:43Speaker 1: was you know, any time you're successful when you're hunting
- 1:16:46Speaker 1: it's it's it's it's real. It's still a thrill for
- 1:16:49Speaker 1: me anyway to to be a successful hunter. But I
- 1:16:53Speaker 1: think that not having success is it's like weirdly also
- 1:17:00Speaker 1: poignant and and it didn't it didn't, it didn't bumm
- 1:17:05Speaker 1: me out. I don't know. It's a weird. It's a
- 1:17:06Speaker 1: weird thing. Man, you really arrived at Like it's like, yeah,
- 1:17:13Speaker 1: that is one thing. That's next. Time'm getting nextime, I'm
- 1:17:15Speaker 1: getting two mule deer tags. I'm killing something. Next, I'm
- 1:17:19Speaker 1: putting in for muled your doorteg. Yeah yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 1:17:21Speaker 1: You used to bumm me out. I mean myself personally
- 1:17:24Speaker 1: when I was a kid. If I didn't get something,
- 1:17:26Speaker 1: that was a failure. Now just being there, So it
- 1:17:31Speaker 1: depends a lot on what's going on in the old freezer. Yes,
- 1:17:34Speaker 1: that's a good point, right. If I'm sitting on if
- 1:17:37Speaker 1: I'm sitting on a cult freezer is packed full, I
- 1:17:39Speaker 1: get real no not non salant, but I get real
- 1:17:42Speaker 1: interest and seeing my buddies. Fine, success, then it's fun.
- 1:17:46Speaker 1: That's fun for me then. But if I'm kind of
- 1:17:49Speaker 1: like really weighing out, just like uh, you wanted to
- 1:17:54Speaker 1: have the I want to have the jam pack freezer
- 1:17:56Speaker 1: full of me that I get a little bit fussy,
- 1:17:59Speaker 1: become less interested in my bodies good times, you know,
- 1:18:04Speaker 1: in a weird way, I think, being like, so you
- 1:18:06Speaker 1: know I don't hunt that much. I mean, I you know,
- 1:18:10Speaker 1: I really don't with with career and and family and kids.
- 1:18:14Speaker 1: Like I'll do sort of probably one good hunt like
- 1:18:18Speaker 1: that every year, and maybe I get to do some
- 1:18:21Speaker 1: in state stuff and you know, goof off. But um,
- 1:18:25Speaker 1: I feel like in a certain way hunting less. It's
- 1:18:31Speaker 1: not made me care less, but enjoy it for its
- 1:18:36Speaker 1: like experience more, you know what I mean. Like, and
- 1:18:40Speaker 1: I'm not so outcome driven as when I hunted more
- 1:18:43Speaker 1: like when when I was younger, I would actually I
- 1:18:46Speaker 1: would hunt more. I'd be more miserable or at least
- 1:18:50Speaker 1: wallow in it, and I would care more whether I
- 1:18:54Speaker 1: was successful or not. And that's interesting me. Yeah, I
- 1:18:58Speaker 1: know I don't understand it either, but it's true. So
- 1:19:02Speaker 1: now older, more seasoned, more responsibilities, you're willing to go
- 1:19:07Speaker 1: out there and enjoy the sucky aspects and not fixate
- 1:19:12Speaker 1: on the success thing that you used to be pushed by.
- 1:19:14Speaker 1: I guess so, so it used to be like, I
- 1:19:16Speaker 1: hate being uncomfortable. I really wanted to get something. Maybe
- 1:19:19Speaker 1: I really wanted to get something so you could get home.
- 1:19:21Speaker 1: I don't know the only way to get out of here,
- 1:19:26Speaker 1: to get out of here and safe face to be
- 1:19:29Speaker 1: able to get it. If I don't feel this, Dang man,
- 1:19:31Speaker 1: I'm gonna have to be out here forever. Yeah, no,
- 1:19:33Speaker 1: I don't know. It's it's funny. Yeah, that's good. I
- 1:19:37Speaker 1: like that. Jimmy Dork. Ask about one last last thing
- 1:19:40Speaker 1: that you were upset when the when Chris Cornell from
- 1:19:43Speaker 1: Sound Garden died. Can you talk about that? Sure? Oh man,
- 1:19:47Speaker 1: why that upset you? I just I don't know. I
- 1:19:50Speaker 1: met him when I was, you know, young, We're about
- 1:19:52Speaker 1: the same age, and I think we discussed it pretty well. Like,
- 1:19:56Speaker 1: I just can never wrap my brain around what, in
- 1:19:59Speaker 1: my opinion, is it temporary problem with obviously permanent solution
- 1:20:03Speaker 1: When somebody does that not to me, Yeah, you're like, man,
- 1:20:08Speaker 1: just call somebody something like Jesus, that's what spoke to
- 1:20:13Speaker 1: you about that. Well that you know, there's two different ways,
- 1:20:17Speaker 1: you know, I get pissed. I'm like, oh, what you know?
- 1:20:19Speaker 1: Too many persons? You know, too many private jets and
- 1:20:21Speaker 1: you're tired of those five star hotels, Like, what's going
- 1:20:24Speaker 1: on here? Most people, you know, large percentage of humanity,
- 1:20:28Speaker 1: would you feel pretty good about the situation he was in?
- 1:20:32Speaker 1: And but you know, I've never understood like, I mean,
- 1:20:34Speaker 1: I really liked him and I obviously loved music a lot,
- 1:20:38Speaker 1: and you're just like, dude, why would you just not
- 1:20:40Speaker 1: just call somebody? I don't know, it couldn't have been
- 1:20:42Speaker 1: that big of a deal. It couldn't have been that
- 1:20:44Speaker 1: big of a deal that you're done, and you just
- 1:20:46Speaker 1: can't wait till tomorrow and about tomorrow is gonna maybe
- 1:20:49Speaker 1: be better or something. I don't know, man, try to
- 1:20:51Speaker 1: stay optimistic. But yeah, that was definitely a Yeah. That
- 1:20:54Speaker 1: one sucked. Really bumm me out. There's so many good musicians,
- 1:20:58Speaker 1: there are lots of just kill themselves. Man, I don't
- 1:21:01Speaker 1: get it. The guy I used, you know, the mark
- 1:21:03Speaker 1: links from Solin Garden or not something to know, Sparkle
- 1:21:07Speaker 1: horse m. We talked about myself with a shotgun in
- 1:21:12Speaker 1: the chest. Oh jeez, that can't be good. Elliott Smith
- 1:21:16Speaker 1: stabbed itself to death with it. Yep, this conversation is
- 1:21:20Speaker 1: taking a dark turn. I did we talked about David Wallace,
- 1:21:24Speaker 1: right and and uh, you know, trying to read his
- 1:21:28Speaker 1: books again, kan your prompt. I even bought the books.
- 1:21:31Speaker 1: A supposedly fun thing I'll never do again. I did.
- 1:21:34Speaker 1: I've got I know him there. But it's just like
- 1:21:37Speaker 1: trying to get a drink out of a fire hose. Man.
- 1:21:39Speaker 1: It's like you do you have you read brief interviews
- 1:21:42Speaker 1: the hideous man? No, I'm still working on the thought.
- 1:21:46Speaker 1: That was the last one he said, and supposedly fun
- 1:21:48Speaker 1: thing I'll never do again. Yeah, I kept infinite jest
- 1:21:50Speaker 1: next in my room so that way I looked smart. Yeah,
- 1:21:54Speaker 1: he used as a prop. I saw Tom Petty the
- 1:21:57Speaker 1: week before he died here. Yeah, yeah, total weird circumstance.
- 1:22:02Speaker 1: I mean, I would I like Tom Petty, but I
- 1:22:05Speaker 1: would not about a ticket to that, you know what
- 1:22:07Speaker 1: I mean. It's just not really what I'm saying because
- 1:22:10Speaker 1: me and me and the mid not there but three
- 1:22:13Speaker 1: years ago. No, I'm not saying anything by it. It's
- 1:22:14Speaker 1: just like anyway, tickets fell into our lap and and
- 1:22:23Speaker 1: and we went, and we were invited by like a
- 1:22:24Speaker 1: work colleague, like, oh man, I love to go. I'd
- 1:22:26Speaker 1: love to see Petty you know, it's it's an icon.
- 1:22:29Speaker 1: It was a great American, one of the one of
- 1:22:31Speaker 1: the greats. And that's the story of Tom Petty is
- 1:22:34Speaker 1: a story about everything that's great but here so so
- 1:22:37Speaker 1: I just I just bring it up because of Jimmy's
- 1:22:39Speaker 1: story about Chris Cornell, which which is like horrible. I
- 1:22:41Speaker 1: view Tom Petty as the opposite. There's a glorious story
- 1:22:45Speaker 1: that dude wraps up a tour and and you know,
- 1:22:49Speaker 1: figurative Mike drop and just goes out and like, how
- 1:22:53Speaker 1: do how do you do better than that? What's the
- 1:22:55Speaker 1: quote you used to say, like some guy said, if
- 1:22:57Speaker 1: I had to do it all over again, I do
- 1:22:59Speaker 1: it like Petty did it. Oh, yeah, it was an interview.
- 1:23:03Speaker 1: It was an interview with uh it was an interview
- 1:23:07Speaker 1: with another musician. You said, if I could do it
- 1:23:09Speaker 1: all over you gonna do it like Tom Petty. Yeah,
- 1:23:11Speaker 1: that's what I thought about when Tom Great America. I mean,
- 1:23:13Speaker 1: the story of Petty's career and success is so like
- 1:23:17Speaker 1: to be like kids from Gainesville, Florida, like a garage band,
- 1:23:22Speaker 1: become like a bar band, cover band, go out to
- 1:23:25Speaker 1: l A to make it big. None of you's ever
- 1:23:27Speaker 1: been Western Mississippi. You find some scrap of paper in
- 1:23:32Speaker 1: a phone booth with like some record producers names on it.
- 1:23:34Speaker 1: Start it's just a bizarre story. No, it's iconic, that's
- 1:23:39Speaker 1: the thing. It's like. And even when he died, I
- 1:23:41Speaker 1: was like, this, in a way is the coolest thing
- 1:23:44Speaker 1: in the world. I mean, it's it's terribly he died,
- 1:23:46Speaker 1: but it's like, you're gonna die anyway. Why not rap,
- 1:23:50Speaker 1: you know, I mean, just why not put a bow
- 1:23:52Speaker 1: on it? Speaking of suicide, American Girl, she could hear
- 1:23:56Speaker 1: the cars roll by on all four or forty one,
- 1:23:59Speaker 1: like the waves crashing on the beach, and for one
- 1:24:02Speaker 1: desperate moment, it's about a girl that kills herself jumping
- 1:24:05Speaker 1: out of a window. American Girl is wow, yeah, it's
- 1:24:10Speaker 1: about a suicide. Oh god, yeah in the court. Oh god,
- 1:24:14Speaker 1: it's so painful, something that's so close but still so
- 1:24:17Speaker 1: far out of reach. American Girl. Um, honestly, it's a
- 1:24:23Speaker 1: doll line now, so I think that's it. Oh No,
- 1:24:26Speaker 1: I wanted to want to say. A guy wrote in.
- 1:24:27Speaker 1: I had said something like having a hammer hanging over
- 1:24:29Speaker 1: your head, and a guy rode in to say, oh,
- 1:24:32Speaker 1: it's not that you meant this sort of democles. Did
- 1:24:38Speaker 1: you write in that? Nope? How do you know what
- 1:24:40Speaker 1: I'm talking about? How do you know what I'm talking about?
- 1:24:43Speaker 1: Because it's not a hammer over your head, that's that's
- 1:24:44Speaker 1: not a thing. Imagine. No, I was being like, I
- 1:24:48Speaker 1: wasn't referring to that, the sort of democles, because you
- 1:24:52Speaker 1: guys are alluding to it when you talk about famous
- 1:24:54Speaker 1: people rich, famous people killing themselves. So a king has
- 1:25:00Speaker 1: like a guy in his court who's just a professional flatterer. Okay,
- 1:25:06Speaker 1: And he says to the king, my god, for just
- 1:25:10Speaker 1: I would what I would love just to be you?
- 1:25:12Speaker 1: For to be you? You have it made right, you're rich,
- 1:25:18Speaker 1: you're the king, Like, why can't I be you? And
- 1:25:21Speaker 1: he goes, oh please, I'll show you exactly what it's
- 1:25:25Speaker 1: like to be me and seats him at the banquet
- 1:25:28Speaker 1: table with the beautiful women around him, the food, the wine,
- 1:25:33Speaker 1: the drink, and then he takes a sword and hangs
- 1:25:35Speaker 1: it from a single horsehair high above his head. Is
- 1:25:39Speaker 1: that right? I guess I don't know this, he says, Okay,
- 1:25:43Speaker 1: do you want to stay in my seat now? Yeah?
- 1:25:47Speaker 1: A sort of democles and the hammer of Steve Vernella.
- 1:25:56Speaker 1: Have you, by the way, you do have a kayak
- 1:25:58Speaker 1: paddle over your head, so I think it's symbolic carbon
- 1:26:02Speaker 1: fiber werner. Carbon friber werner paddle could fall and bust
- 1:26:06Speaker 1: me in that, that's right. I think won't even give
- 1:26:09Speaker 1: you a headache like a feather. I don't know if
- 1:26:12Speaker 1: you know, if Fitzgerald butt up at the fish shack,
- 1:26:15Speaker 1: the next time you go to take the boat out
- 1:26:17Speaker 1: to get to take the canoe to get the skiff,
- 1:26:19Speaker 1: you'll notice that I now have a carbon fiber canoe
- 1:26:22Speaker 1: paddle up there. Holy ship, Yeah, I think I saw
- 1:26:25Speaker 1: something here about this. Yeah, good stuff. You keep thinking
- 1:26:28Speaker 1: you forgot the paddle, then you realize that you're paddling.
- 1:26:31Speaker 1: It's great, it's amazing, all right. Thanks for joining us, guys,
- 1:26:35Speaker 1: Thanks man, Thank you,
