- 0:09Speaker 1: What's up, everybody?
- 0:10Speaker 2: Welcome back to another episode of Buco Territory, presented to
- 0:13Speaker 2: you by the Foul Territory Network.
- 0:14Speaker 1: I'm Noah Hiles.
- 0:15Speaker 2: Joining me as always are my co hosts Josh Harrison
- 0:18Speaker 2: and Mark aka Platinum Key.
- 0:21Speaker 1: We got a one topic show for you all today.
- 0:24Speaker 2: Team USA just grind it out a two to one
- 0:28Speaker 2: gritty victory over the Dominican Republic in the World Classic
- 0:32Speaker 2: semi final. We're gonna break it all down now here.
- 0:36Speaker 2: We want to remind everyone that all of our World
- 0:38Speaker 2: Baseball Classic coverage is brought to you by our friends
- 0:41Speaker 2: at Fox one, which is live stream all of your
- 0:44Speaker 2: Fox favorites together in one place, including all WBC games
- 0:48Speaker 2: over the next few weeks in that or and after
- 0:51Speaker 2: that the best baseball action all season long. So guys,
- 0:57Speaker 2: a lot of Pittsburgh connections in this game. Oh yeah,
- 1:00Speaker 2: and the headliner is obvious. Paul Skeins gets the win.
- 1:04Speaker 2: He goes four and a third on the mound allows
- 1:07Speaker 2: I believe, six hits, strikes out, two no walks allowed.
- 1:11Speaker 2: The game's only run for the Dominican Republic a solo
- 1:14Speaker 2: shot by junior Cameron Aro. But overall, I want to
- 1:18Speaker 2: just get both of your impressions. I'll give mine real quick.
- 1:21Speaker 2: I mean the stat line doesn't obviously jump off the page,
- 1:24Speaker 2: but when you consider the lineup that he was facing,
- 1:28Speaker 2: it's pretty darn impressive.
- 1:29Speaker 3: Oh yeah. I mean this is a team that scored
- 1:32Speaker 3: fifty one runs I think coming in in just four games,
- 1:36Speaker 3: and so their five games, so I mean just a
- 1:39Speaker 3: loaded offense. I think like eight of the nine starters
- 1:42Speaker 3: had like last year, got MVP votes, So just an
- 1:47Speaker 3: absolutely stacked, stacked lineup, and Paul Skeins made them look
- 1:52Speaker 3: like nothing. I mean giving up a solo shot that
- 1:54Speaker 3: Junior came a narrow You'll take that. If you only
- 1:57Speaker 3: threw one bad pitch in seventy some pit, that's phenomenal. Uh.
- 2:02Speaker 3: So it was excellent to see Paul Skins do that
- 2:05Speaker 3: in front of the world, have all of America get
- 2:09Speaker 3: to understand what it means for his skiings say to happen,
- 2:11Speaker 3: and just have that trust. Like when he loaded the
- 2:13Speaker 3: bases and got himself out of it, wasn't worried for
- 2:17Speaker 3: a second. And that's what an age feels like. And
- 2:20Speaker 3: that's so cool to have that on the Pittsford Pirates.
- 2:24Speaker 4: Oh no, I thought he pitched well. Definitely a different
- 2:27Speaker 4: outing from.
- 2:28Speaker 5: The Mexico game where you know he was I would
- 2:31Speaker 5: say striking everybody out. Today, you could tell a different lineup,
- 2:34Speaker 5: different game plan. He pitched to the zone, pitched the contact,
- 2:37Speaker 5: and as you said, the solo home run, that's what
- 2:40Speaker 5: you want to limit it to if if you're going
- 2:42Speaker 5: to give up, you know, a big fly like that,
- 2:44Speaker 5: and you know it kept him in a game, kept
- 2:45Speaker 5: him in long enough to you know, get two runs,
- 2:48Speaker 5: which is you know, realistically, to beat Paul you probably
- 2:51Speaker 5: need more than one run. And he made pitches when
- 2:53Speaker 5: he needed to, and it was it was a good
- 2:55Speaker 5: win for the US to you know, have a chance
- 2:56Speaker 5: to win a title.
- 2:58Speaker 1: Yeah for context on just yeah.
- 3:03Speaker 2: For context on how good this roster that skans, this
- 3:07Speaker 2: lineup that Skians face today is. I wrote about this
- 3:11Speaker 2: in my column that ran Sunday morning. They have a
- 3:15Speaker 2: combined twenty seven All Star appearances and the average age
- 3:19Speaker 2: of this lineup is just over twenty seven years old.
- 3:23Speaker 2: Last year, the lineup slashed a combined two seventy one,
- 3:27Speaker 2: three fifty three, four eighty one. So that's an eight
- 3:30Speaker 2: thirty four ops. I made the comparison, Bobaschett had an
- 3:35Speaker 2: eight forty ops last year, so that's essentially facing nine Bobaschettes,
- 3:42Speaker 2: which you know, his WRC plus was one thirty four,
- 3:45Speaker 2: which means, you know, thirty four percent above league average
- 3:49Speaker 2: productivity at the plate, and you're getting that one through
- 3:51Speaker 2: nine and oh, by the way, this lineup also averaged
- 3:54Speaker 2: one through nine twenty nine point three home runs last
- 3:58Speaker 2: year per batter.
- 3:59Speaker 4: So didn't they didn't they set the record for like yeah.
- 4:04Speaker 2: So yeah fifteen two of the five games they played
- 4:09Speaker 2: ended in a mercy rule. I mean, O'Neil Cruz was
- 4:12Speaker 2: coming off the bench for this team like that. This
- 4:15Speaker 2: is this is one of the best lineups ever formed,
- 4:18Speaker 2: Like I mean.
- 4:20Speaker 1: Off the bench must say that's yeah.
- 4:25Speaker 2: So just to wrap up like it, it is really impressive,
- 4:29Speaker 2: like what Josh mentioned to see Paul kind of recognize, like, look,
- 4:33Speaker 2: if I try to strike these guys out, they're good
- 4:36Speaker 2: enough hitters where they're gonna make every at bat a
- 4:38Speaker 2: ten to eleven pitch at bat and I'm gonna be
- 4:41Speaker 2: done after two innings. So for him to kind of
- 4:45Speaker 2: pitch to contact and you have to be a special
- 4:48Speaker 2: kind of crazy to pitch to contact to this lineup
- 4:53Speaker 2: and feel confident with your stuff.
- 4:56Speaker 1: In two Team.
- 4:57Speaker 2: USA's credit, they got incredible defense behind Paul Skens. I
- 5:02Speaker 2: mean the plays made by terrang the plays made by
- 5:05Speaker 2: Aaron Judge, both with his glove and his arm. I
- 5:08Speaker 2: mean Bobby Witt Junior just keeps doing Bobby wit Junior things.
- 5:13Speaker 2: I mean Gunner Henderson, a guy who plays shortstop. Pretty
- 5:17Speaker 2: good call by Mark de Rosa, who's taken a lot
- 5:20Speaker 2: of heat this this tournament. He made the right decision
- 5:24Speaker 2: to start Gunner Henderson at third base, who had a
- 5:28Speaker 2: great defensive play today and hit the game or hit
- 5:31Speaker 2: the game tying home run. And Dominican Republic also had
- 5:35Speaker 2: a lot of great plays too. This was just a
- 5:37Speaker 2: great baseball game. I want to talk about some other
- 5:42Speaker 2: elements of this that aren't necessarily schemes attached because we can,
- 5:46Speaker 2: we can circle back to Skeens, But I think we
- 5:49Speaker 2: as a Pittsburgh podcast, we should absolutely shout out Mason
- 5:53Speaker 2: Miller and David Bednar, two kids who grew up in
- 5:56Speaker 2: western Pennsylvania.
- 5:58Speaker 1: David Bednar being.
- 6:00Speaker 2: From Mars Mars High School product and then Mason Miller,
- 6:04Speaker 2: who went to Bethel Park High School and then played
- 6:07Speaker 2: collegiately at Waynesburg, a D three school not far outside
- 6:10Speaker 2: of Pittsburgh, before transferring to Gardner Webb and then obviously
- 6:14Speaker 2: becoming you know, an elite closer.
- 6:18Speaker 1: Guys.
- 6:18Speaker 2: I mean, neither you guys are both Ohio guys, so
- 6:21Speaker 2: it's a little different.
- 6:22Speaker 1: But I mean, Josh, you've lived here for quite.
- 6:25Speaker 2: Some time obviously, and in in Mark you lived and
- 6:29Speaker 2: died for a year. Yeah. Yeah, I just got to say,
- 6:34Speaker 2: as someone who grew up playing baseball around the same
- 6:38Speaker 2: time as both of those guys, it's really cool to
- 6:40Speaker 2: see how the game has grown. And really since since
- 6:46Speaker 2: Josh's teams started winning baseball games in the city of.
- 6:50Speaker 1: Pittsburgh, you saw that resurgence.
- 6:52Speaker 2: In the baseball community, and now you see guys like
- 6:56Speaker 2: Mason Miller and David Bednar impacting the game on a
- 6:59Speaker 2: world stage. And I think that that's a credit to,
- 7:02Speaker 2: you know, what the pirates did when we were growing up.
- 7:05Speaker 1: So Hot tipped you, Josh, I guess.
- 7:08Speaker 4: Thank you, you know, trying to represent for the answers.
- 7:12Speaker 3: I mean, if you look at the box score tonight,
- 7:15Speaker 3: six point one innings of this game were pitched by
- 7:18Speaker 3: Pittsburgh adjacent pitchers with six strikeouts. I mean, David Bednar
- 7:23Speaker 3: had two strikeouts, got himself out of a jam. Mason
- 7:26Speaker 3: Miller got the save with two strikeouts, albeit the one
- 7:29Speaker 3: at the end may have been a little questionable, but
- 7:32Speaker 3: we can get into that later. But I mean, it's
- 7:34Speaker 3: so cool for the city to just see so much
- 7:38Speaker 3: representation on a world stage, not just a national stage,
- 7:42Speaker 3: a world stage, and it just goes to show Pittsburgh's
- 7:45Speaker 3: a baseball town.
- 7:47Speaker 1: It is.
- 7:47Speaker 2: So let's talk about the abs here, Mark, I think
- 7:51Speaker 2: he raised a great point. There were some very generous
- 7:55Speaker 2: called third strike question yeah, questionable.
- 7:59Speaker 1: Yes, I mean the final out was one.
- 8:02Speaker 2: I feel like there was one in the eighth inning
- 8:04Speaker 2: as well against Was that was so to strike out
- 8:07Speaker 2: in the eighth yes, yes, yeah, because that that was,
- 8:11Speaker 2: as Joshua say, questionable as well.
- 8:13Speaker 4: Questionable Yeah, and not just the zone.
- 8:16Speaker 1: Yeah yeah, probably better than one.
- 8:19Speaker 2: Yeah, I.
- 8:21Speaker 3: Mean sorry, I don't know. Yeah, That's what I was
- 8:25Speaker 3: going to say, is that it was the players recognize
- 8:28Speaker 3: that they were blown calls as well. So this is
- 8:30Speaker 3: something where the challenge system could have corrected all of
- 8:34Speaker 3: these and it will be interesting to see avoiding these
- 8:38Speaker 3: situations this year in MLB, right, I.
- 8:43Speaker 5: Mean, that's ultimately what it's been place for is to
- 8:46Speaker 5: I mean, I guess to make up for I don't
- 8:48Speaker 5: want to say make up, but you know, in those
- 8:49Speaker 5: moments where you feel a this might have been a miscall,
- 8:52Speaker 5: I can take the heat off of, you know, an
- 8:54Speaker 5: umpire per se.
- 8:55Speaker 4: Saying oh he missed that coup. I guess what I
- 8:57Speaker 4: got overturned.
- 8:58Speaker 5: But that's also the the risk that teams take when
- 9:00Speaker 5: they're using a challenge.
- 9:01Speaker 4: If you miss it, you know, you lose it.
- 9:03Speaker 5: And you know, the Classic I think for some of
- 9:06Speaker 5: the guys might be a little different. They're gonna have
- 9:08Speaker 5: to get back and spring training mode because I did
- 9:10Speaker 5: see early in the Classic where a couple of guys
- 9:13Speaker 5: got calls and they you know, at they head it
- 9:14Speaker 5: was like, no, it's it, you know what I mean.
- 9:16Speaker 5: So to their to their credit, they did a good
- 9:20Speaker 5: job of being able to you know, kind of not
- 9:23Speaker 5: go too crazy because they know the abs. But at
- 9:25Speaker 5: the same time, sold school baseball is hey, not everything
- 9:29Speaker 5: is going to go your way, And I mean, I
- 9:31Speaker 5: think it'll be a question do they bring it in
- 9:33Speaker 5: for the next Classic.
- 9:35Speaker 1: Yeah, I think so.
- 9:36Speaker 2: I mean, if you're gonna make it a part of
- 9:38Speaker 2: the game, like in the highest stage of the game, right,
- 9:42Speaker 2: which is Major League Baseball. I mean, I guess you
- 9:46Speaker 2: can excuse it not being a part of this Classic
- 9:48Speaker 2: because it hasn't really been a part of Major League
- 9:51Speaker 2: Baseball yet major League Baseball spring training.
- 9:53Speaker 1: But yeah, I think and I mean even in the Olympics.
- 9:56Speaker 2: If major leaguers are a part of the Olympics in
- 9:59Speaker 2: twenty twenty eight, I think they should consider it because
- 10:02Speaker 2: I mean, if you're going to play a big football game,
- 10:04Speaker 2: now for a big basketball game, and it's gonna be televised,
- 10:07Speaker 2: you're gonna want to have instant replay.
- 10:09Speaker 1: And this is a form of replay that baseball's.
- 10:12Speaker 2: Highest caliber of league has decided, we'll make the game better.
- 10:17Speaker 2: And maybe this it would have made the game better.
- 10:20Speaker 2: I mean selfishly, as an American, I like the results. Yeah,
- 10:26Speaker 2: you give Soto an extra chance there Perdomo at the end,
- 10:31Speaker 2: it would have been maybe a game.
- 10:33Speaker 3: Yeah, I would have been on first if that bitch
- 10:38Speaker 3: so yeah, who knows, But I mean.
- 10:42Speaker 2: Patis coming up, Yeah, that would have been That would
- 10:45Speaker 2: have been interesting. Guess what we'll we'll never know because
- 10:50Speaker 2: that that was the game. And as Josh noted, if
- 10:54Speaker 2: it's close, you can't take it especially.
- 10:58Speaker 1: And to be fair, there had been miscalled.
- 11:02Speaker 2: I mean, it had been a loose zone all games,
- 11:05Speaker 2: so you've got to have that in your mind while
- 11:07Speaker 2: you're batting in that situation.
- 11:10Speaker 4: Easier said than done, though, yeah yep.
- 11:14Speaker 5: But I mean, like you said, the result benefited you know,
- 11:17Speaker 5: us and they got a chance to, you know, go
- 11:20Speaker 5: for go, which I don't think is gonna be easy
- 11:22Speaker 5: to ask.
- 11:23Speaker 4: Venezuela.
- 11:23Speaker 5: It's kind of, you know, caught a little bit of
- 11:25Speaker 5: fire coming back from the other day to advance, and.
- 11:29Speaker 4: I think you'll see another entertaining game. That's what you
- 11:31Speaker 4: hope to see.
- 11:32Speaker 5: I think these games have been really good and I'm
- 11:33Speaker 5: excited to see what's coming up because as I said,
- 11:36Speaker 5: somebody come joined us as you know, a U S
- 11:39Speaker 5: a t USA gold team.
- 11:41Speaker 4: You know it's only one, let's make.
- 11:42Speaker 3: It too And I'll just think that was that by
- 11:46Speaker 3: saying that, what a result for Major League Baseball. Their
- 11:50Speaker 3: product was on full display tonight, and I really hope
- 11:55Speaker 3: a lot of new baseball fans tuned in those first
- 11:58Speaker 3: Indians like several, you know, getting those strikeouts, just going crazy.
- 12:02Speaker 3: Like I was, like, I hate that this is happening,
- 12:04Speaker 3: but it's hard not to get excited just watching this
- 12:07Speaker 3: guy go crazy. I mean Benard getting out of that jam,
- 12:11Speaker 3: all of the defensive plays, Skiings getting out of the
- 12:13Speaker 3: bases loaded jam, the stadium just going electric hearing USA chance.
- 12:17Speaker 3: I mean, if you're a new baseball fan, I'm gonna
- 12:21Speaker 3: make sure I tune in Tomorrow night and Tuesday night
- 12:25Speaker 3: on Fox one to make sure I catch all these games.
- 12:29Speaker 3: So I really hope this spreads the game more in
- 12:32Speaker 3: what a great spot for baseball right now.
- 12:35Speaker 5: And I think this long day made me speak. I
- 12:38Speaker 5: turned Italy and Venezuela to plays tomorrow, right, yes, sir,
- 12:41Speaker 5: my apologies to both teams. Not I mean actually Italy,
- 12:44Speaker 5: I said, Venezuela my bad service, my bad, my bad.
- 12:48Speaker 4: So I'll be tuned in tomorrow to see either way.
- 12:50Speaker 5: I think it's still going to be a good game
- 12:51Speaker 5: because one Venezuela is not anything take to be taken lightly.
- 12:55Speaker 5: In Italy has also made themselves, you know, a team
- 12:58Speaker 5: to be to know to be on watch, and.
- 13:03Speaker 4: He's gonna be.
- 13:03Speaker 1: Excited it's the Francisco Survelli Bowl.
- 13:07Speaker 2: I mean, he's a Venezuelan born man with Italian and
- 13:13Speaker 2: now he's managing Team Italy against Venezuela. Mark, real quick
- 13:20Speaker 2: here before we wrap this up, I just wanted to
- 13:22Speaker 2: point out, like, because I mentioned your name, just because
- 13:24Speaker 2: you said, like, what a win for baseball, What a
- 13:28Speaker 2: win for Pittsburgh too.
- 13:29Speaker 1: I mean, for Paul.
- 13:30Speaker 2: Skiens to to have that moment with him where entering
- 13:36Speaker 2: this I I spent all day reading about this game
- 13:40Speaker 2: on the athletic.
- 13:41Speaker 1: I got a copy of the New York Post at.
- 13:43Speaker 2: The publics around the corner from where I'm staying, and
- 13:46Speaker 2: I was reading just even you know, I wrote about it,
- 13:49Speaker 2: reading just anyone that was was previewing this game, and.
- 13:53Speaker 1: It was all the talk of how good this.
- 13:56Speaker 2: Dominican lineup was, but it was, well, do you US
- 14:00Speaker 2: has the equalizer?
- 14:01Speaker 1: And it's they have the picture.
- 14:04Speaker 2: And that's such a rarity in sports where I mean,
- 14:07Speaker 2: there have been eras in baseball where there hasn't been
- 14:11Speaker 2: a pitcher that could do what Paul did against the
- 14:15Speaker 2: best lineup that you could form with, you know, on
- 14:18Speaker 2: the planet at that time. Really, and Paul did it
- 14:21Speaker 2: and the fact that he's a Pittsburgh Pirate is such
- 14:25Speaker 2: a boost to this franchise for its branding. And obviously,
- 14:28Speaker 2: I mean, I think it goes without saying that he's
- 14:30Speaker 2: not going to be here forever, and who knows what
- 14:32Speaker 2: he will actually even achieve team wise while he's here,
- 14:36Speaker 2: But these moments are things that Pirates fans should cherish forever.
- 14:40Speaker 1: And it's it's again, it's super valuable to.
- 14:42Speaker 2: The franchise because I think back to when I was
- 14:45Speaker 2: in high school and the Pirates had a superstar and
- 14:50Speaker 2: just the awareness of like, holy cal like the Pirates
- 14:53Speaker 2: have a guy on Sports Center commercials, the Pirates have
- 14:55Speaker 2: a guy on video game covers, and it makes the
- 14:59Speaker 2: baseball world to take your franchise seriously, and that's something
- 15:03Speaker 2: the Pirates have struggled with. And Josh, I mean, I'll
- 15:05Speaker 2: let you speak on this because you were around to
- 15:07Speaker 2: see at firsthand what a superstar can do to a
- 15:11Speaker 2: franchise that's really looking to kind of insert itself in
- 15:13Speaker 2: the baseball world.
- 15:15Speaker 5: Oh yeah, for sure, especially when that's what the fans
- 15:19Speaker 5: have been longing for.
- 15:20Speaker 4: Even baseball wants it, because after a while.
- 15:23Speaker 5: You know, you want to see a fresh face, and
- 15:26Speaker 5: you know that was able to be done while I
- 15:27Speaker 5: was there with the Pirates.
- 15:28Speaker 4: You know, cut you're gonna cover the show.
- 15:31Speaker 5: Uh, you know our locker rooms getting beats by head
- 15:33Speaker 5: you know it's getting beats headphones.
- 15:35Speaker 4: Hey man, last year we couldn't get protein shakes. You know.
- 15:39Speaker 5: But you know, it's definitely one of those things where
- 15:42Speaker 5: you know, you understand the history of not only baseball
- 15:44Speaker 5: but also the organization and what the Pirates have been
- 15:47Speaker 5: able to do, and you know their history, and I
- 15:50Speaker 5: know that's something that the fans want to get back
- 15:52Speaker 5: to the winning ways. And when you can have a
- 15:53Speaker 5: player that can bring, you know, some type of shed
- 15:56Speaker 5: some light on your organization in a positive way, you know,
- 16:00Speaker 5: it makes you excited for what the future can hold
- 16:02Speaker 5: because you don't have this opportunity. It's like a once
- 16:05Speaker 5: in a lifetime opportunity to have a picture like this.
- 16:07Speaker 5: And as you said, no, he's not going to be
- 16:09Speaker 5: here forever. You need to cherish moments like this and
- 16:12Speaker 5: wrap the wave and you know, see what can be accomplished,
- 16:15Speaker 5: you know what his time here, but this is definitely
- 16:17Speaker 5: something that you know, fans should be proud of and
- 16:19Speaker 5: you know USA fans as well.
- 16:22Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean it's hard within the moment to just
- 16:25Speaker 3: appreciate the greatness of Paul Skins. And he's only twenty three,
- 16:29Speaker 3: but I mean, Derek Jeter was saying he was arguably
- 16:32Speaker 3: the best picture in the world tonight. Big Poppy said, Oh,
- 16:36Speaker 3: there's no argument he is the best picture in the world.
- 16:38Speaker 4: Tonight.
- 16:39Speaker 3: They're talking about a Pittsburgh Pirates player being the best
- 16:42Speaker 3: position or best player at his position, at one of
- 16:45Speaker 3: the most valuable positions in sports. That's crazy. So it's
- 16:49Speaker 3: just yeah, the branding for this team, I mean, getting
- 16:53Speaker 3: the shout out on the broadcast being like, come on, Pirates,
- 16:55Speaker 3: like they added some to this roster, but like everyone
- 16:59Speaker 3: in the baseball world wants to see the Pirates succeed
- 17:01Speaker 3: and so thrusting them into that spotlight saying, hey, we
- 17:05Speaker 3: got someone that we're ready to build around, let's do it.
- 17:08Speaker 3: I think we saw that this offseason already, that impact
- 17:11Speaker 3: that Paul Skins has brought to this franchise, and looking
- 17:13Speaker 3: forward to seeing what it brings the next couple of
- 17:15Speaker 3: years as well, We've.
- 17:18Speaker 1: Got some more World Baseball Classic to look forward to.
- 17:20Speaker 2: As Josh and Mark mentioned team are Team Italy and
- 17:24Speaker 2: Team Venezuela Square Off. You can watch all of that
