- 0:21her chicken coop along with all her chickens.
- 0:28Hey, everybody. Good morning from the chicken
- 0:30coop. So we're talking about church
- 0:33signs today because we all know we all probably drive in our
- 0:37neighborhoods or wherever we are, and we see signs that
- 0:40pastors put out on churches and they're meant to make us think
- 0:45well. There was a sign on a church
- 0:48right near my house. As I come around, I have the
- 0:50privilege of living in a place where there are churches all
- 0:54over the place and an abundance of them.
- 0:57So I see a lot of these messages, and this one got me
- 1:00thinking because it said love thy neighbor as thyself.
- 1:03We've all heard that before. I've heard it from my mother 100
- 1:06times growing up. It was something that she always
- 1:11talked about. So I was very clear on it.
- 1:14And. I didn't really think much about
- 1:17it. I might be clear on it, but I
- 1:18didn't really think much about it.
- 1:20But when you start to take this and you really start to
- 1:22contemplate it. So I'm in the car, I'm driving,
- 1:24I see the sign. And now it's like a mindworm.
- 1:27It's in there. I'm thinking.
- 1:28I'm thinking, I'm thinking love thy neighbor as I love myself,
- 1:32thyself. And I'm like, well, what if I
- 1:35don't like myself? What if I just am not a fan of
- 1:39myself? What if I feel like, you know,
- 1:41I'm having a horrible time in life?
- 1:44I'm depressed. How can I possibly turn around
- 1:47and treat somebody else with love and kindness and respect
- 1:51when I am absolutely miserable myself?
- 1:54And of course that sent me down a whole Rd. about how other
- 1:56people must really all these people that are out there, that
- 1:59are miserable, that walk around with, you know, this scowl on
- 2:04their face in a state of disdain for what's going on.
- 2:07They complain about politics. They complain about the world.
- 2:10They have all these issues, but they miss all the good stuff.
- 2:14They miss all the small stuff that we're supposed to see.
- 2:16In my opinion, you know, I think that the universe and God really
- 2:20uphold the gift of having these everyday miracles.
- 2:26Small, tiny little miracles. As I sit out here and watch the
- 2:29chicken scratching in the yard, it's like kind of cool out here
- 2:33this morning. And they're just, I think
- 2:34they're grateful and they're a little quiet and they're having
- 2:36their scratch and they're just moving around and like shit is
- 2:39that they're just such little to me.
- 2:41They're just such little miracles because they're so cool
- 2:44and yet they're so deadly, like nothing can survive around them.
- 2:47And they've got all these cool little gifts.
- 2:49And I look at them and I'm like. And every day they go and they
- 2:52make eggs and they're just so fabulously happy and I love that
- 2:57And so I can sit there and I can say, hey, they they have a state
- 3:01of joy. They bring, they bring a state
- 3:04of joy and to me they they put that out there and I focus on
- 3:09that. So, but other people just see
- 3:12them as, you know, food or? Like a commodity, which is even
- 3:17worse to me than just seeing them as food.
- 3:19They see them as commodities. And we all have our own way of
- 3:24viewing things. And that brings us back to the
- 3:27initial phrase of will, Love thy neighbor as thyself.
- 3:30But what you're bringing to the table is in question.
- 3:33So you have to pause and say, well, you know, could I actually
- 3:39say that I actually could love my neighbor like I love myself?
- 3:43And what does that mean? You know the whole thing of
- 3:46challenging everything. One of the reasons that I study
- 3:51Buddhism the way that I do is because of the way the Buddha
- 3:54presented a lot of things and because of his his strategy for
- 3:58how he presented it. And one of my favorite things
- 4:01that he ever said was the fact believe nothing that I say.
- 4:06Find out for yourself. You decide.
- 4:08Now that's paraphrasing, obviously, but that's what it
- 4:11meant. You decide what it means to you.
- 4:13I will put the information out and you decide.
- 4:15And I follow that principle here.
- 4:17I will tell you what works for me, and you get to decide.
- 4:19And in this case, I think we have to really decide.
- 4:23Well, the directive is very specific.
- 4:25Love thy neighbor. But that second part of it is,
- 4:29as I love myself, well, how can I possibly give something to
- 4:32someone that I'm not giving to myself?
- 4:34So all things have to start at home.
- 4:36We go back to the analogy of like when you're in a plane and
- 4:39something goes wrong and the masks fall from the ceiling.
- 4:42The first directive that the pilot gives is put the mask on
- 4:45yourself 1st and then help your neighbor.
- 4:48And this one should be the same way in my opinion, we have to
- 4:53assume. That we have to check in with
- 4:56ourselves first before we can love another human being.
- 4:59We can't possibly give what we don't have or cultivate in
- 5:03ourselves because we all have love.
- 5:05We all have things, but we must cultivate in ourselves first.
- 5:10That part or we can't give it away.
- 5:13If you come and knock on my door and say, hey, can I borrow a cup
- 5:16of sugar? And I don't have a cup of sugar,
- 5:18I can't give it to you. So that's the key.
- 5:21You've got to start that process, You've got to make sure
- 5:25that you are checking in with yourself 1st and then you can go
- 5:28out and share that love. Alright my friends, I hope you
- 5:32have a blessed day and I will see you tomorrow.
- 5:34Bye.
