- 0:00Welcome to doctor-turned-health-coach. My name is Dr. Ashori.
- 0:03I'm a board-certified family medicine physician-turned-health-coach.
- 0:08And in today's podcast episode,
- 0:10I want to talk a little bit about some of the common reasons why my health coaching
- 0:17clients sometimes burn out,
- 0:20which means that they give up on their healthy lifestyle habits.
- 0:25This is very common, and you might be able to relate.
- 0:29Probably the most common reason is that a person tries to take on too much too quickly.
- 0:36And that's often because they want to either keep the momentum going,
- 0:40or because they want to get the most out of their time and money that they're
- 0:44investing in the health coaching, or because they want to see quick results
- 0:48so that they can stick with their entire plan.
- 0:52Unfortunately, this often leads to burnout because our minds, our brain,
- 0:57our mental health, it's all designed to keep us and resist any major change
- 1:03very quickly i know that's frustrating but in many ways this is also a good
- 1:07thing it keeps us on track and creates a sense of.
- 1:12Calm and tranquility because we know that we can maintain our normal way of
- 1:17life if we were to vacillate constantly and change change things up it make
- 1:22for a very chaotic life so your body your brain,
- 1:25everything is designed to resist a lot of rapid changes.
- 1:30How do we solve for this? The best thing is to introduce changes very slowly.
- 1:36One of the things we talk about in my health coaching right off the bat is that
- 1:40we're not here to make a lot of big changes very quickly. We're here to trick
- 1:45your body and your mind into thinking that it's pretty much doing the same thing.
- 1:50If you have oatmeal, we might make a few changes to the oatmeal.
- 1:54We might have you chew a little bit more, make a few small changes.
- 1:58And that often is more than enough to get you incredible long-term results.
- 2:03Another common reason is that people get frustrated when they don't see the
- 2:08results that they're after.
- 2:09Now, results take time. Sometimes they come quickly. For most of us,
- 2:14they're going to come gradually.
- 2:15And if you recall what I just said about point one, well, we always want to
- 2:21bring change about kind of slowly.
- 2:24So how do we keep the momentum going if we're not seeing the change?
- 2:28What I've seen many of my clients do successfully is that they write down how
- 2:34many days they've stuck to a particular habit. That is a success.
- 2:39So if you can track that for yourself, if you can monitor and say,
- 2:42okay, look, this is day 35 and I've done this habit that I believe is healthy.
- 2:48That reinforcement is really important.
- 2:51Believing that what you're doing is going to lead to good results is really
- 2:54important because it's going to keep you on the same track, it's going to keep
- 2:58you motivated, and it's going to help prevent that common burnout that I see a lot.
- 3:04Finally, an important point is that we often burn out because we don't believe
- 3:10that what we're doing is going to make a difference or we believe that we're
- 3:14just going to fail anyways, we're going to give up.
- 3:17So how do you solve for this problem? The best way to solve for this problem
- 3:21is to constantly reinforce the ideas that you genuinely believe in,
- 3:26meaning, if I choose myself.
- 3:29The best food options for myself, the best nutrition plan for myself, if I engage in,
- 3:36meditation or something that's mindful for me, if I am active most days of the
- 3:42week, if I maintain a good sleep routine, chances are that I'm going to achieve
- 3:48the ideal health goal that I'm after.
- 3:50So reinforcing this with your health coach, with your physician,
- 3:54with your loved ones, in your journal,
- 3:56whatever it takes, is going to be an incredibly effective way of preventing
- 4:03yourself from burning out because you'll believe in what you're doing.
- 4:06You'll believe in the process. You believe in the strategy.
- 4:09And that is what's going to keep you going.
