- 0:11[upbeat rock music] Welcome to the super spooky, black magic, voodoo, Dracula versus the Power Rangers, yes, meets the Teenage Mutant Ninja Gauchos version of the Weekly Dose of Fats with the dead, rotting, zombified corpses of Sven and Gomez.
- 0:44Ah. [laughs] Welcome to the Fat Bike Laboratory. Fat Bike Laboratory, late at night. And I introduce JK, well within my sight. Yeah.
- 0:59[laughs] You're a marvelous hot dog, I love you all. [laughs] Fat Bike Radio and the Weekly Dose of Fat is sponsored by Surly Bikes. Check out all of Surly's bicycle doodads at surlybikes.com.
- 1:15All right, JK, please tell our listener what we've got in store this week. We introduce a new weekly feature, the Fat Bike Event of the Week. [sings] Da, da, da, da. We welcome Natalie Merchant back to the show.
- 1:32Uh, that's like Kathy Merchant and stuff? Yeah, dude, stop screwing around. This is a serious comedy show. We welcome Kathy Merchant back to the show to talk about the big Fat Bike Ride and Expo.
- 1:43We take calls from our listener- About- [laughs] About this week's question, which may or may not involve Sam Squanch. Sam Squanch. And as is our habit, we share fat and plus bike news in the Fatty Farm Field Report.
- 1:59And now, for something we hope you'll really like, the Fat Bike Event of the Week. [sings] Da, da, da, da.
- 2:09The event of the week is the Fat Bike at the Barn, being held Saturday, November 14th, in Cable, Wisconsin, from 1:00 PM to later. It may be double digits. 10:00 o'clock, I think, is listed.
- 2:25Yeah, I'm on, up there, Cable, Wisconsin way. Yeah, Fat Bike at the Barn. It's gonna be a fun fat bike-themed party. They're gonna have vendors. There's gonna be bike demos, groom- a grooming seminar.
- 2:38It says a little- Like, for man hair or for snow? [laughs] Yes. [laughs] There's gonna be food, and I think they'll probably have, uh, beer. Probably. And sodas. And sodas.
- 2:51And Wildcat Groomers is going to unveil their new single track groomer, so- It's yellow... something to, uh- [laughs]... to groom. This is, this is for the snow again. Yeah.
- 3:01Plus, uh, all of the money that the event raises will go to the CAMBA trail groups up there.
- 3:05I don't know how they're splitting it out exactly, but it's to groom 40 to 50 miles of fat bike trails up there in the Northwoods of our very own Wisconsin highlands. Eh?
- 3:15[laughs] We're gonna have the, uh, link to the Facebook event, so all you have to do is click on that, and, uh, check it out, and contact them, get signed up, and, uh, let us know how that goes. Right on.
- 3:28How come the, the Yoopers over there, not too far away to the east there, talk a little different than the guys up in the Northwoods there? I don't know. I don't know. I think it- [laughs] I blame, I blame Chicago.
- 3:38Oh, yeah. No, that's probably a pretty good, uh, or pretty bad influencing- [laughs]... us. Yeah. So, uh, we, we worked... We have another new segment that, uh, is kinda like Command Man from the NFL coverage. For real?
- 3:52[laughs] And that's what we call it. [laughs] For real? For real. Until we come up with a better name, it's for real. For real. For real you guys are doing this section right now? For, for real, we're gonna do this.
- 4:03So, okay. So yeah, well, I just kind of, I figured that it would be something like a, uh, you know, all the news, the stuff that we take in every week, there's always something that makes you go, "What?
- 4:13Are you kidding me?" You know? Right. And, and that's a for real moment right there, man. There you go. I had one of those. It was actually, well, last week probably now. Uh-huh.
- 4:22The, uh, the 45NRTH, their new, uh, kind of mid-season shoe- Mm-hmm... is called the Japanther. And I went, "For real?" [laughs] For real? Japanther?
- 4:34'Cause I don't know what a Japanther is, and I had to look it up, and I didn't find many satisfactory answers except it's like a punk rock band.
- 4:41So is it an obscure reference to this punk rock band or a Japanese panther, or what, what is it? [laughs] I, I had a similar experience with Dunder Beast. Oh, okay. Yeah, Flow Beast and Dunder Beast. I got Flow Beast.
- 4:57Yeah, well, sure. [laughs] What's Dunder, though? Dunder, maybe Dunder, Dunder- I done- Thundercats- [laughs]... the... Oh! Oh! [laughs] I don't know. But, uh, yeah, that's it for real. That, that was that section. Yeah.
- 5:11So let's, uh, take a quick break before- I probably have more of those every week that I just have to put my mind to thinking about again. All right.
- 5:18Well, if you like that- Because- If you like that segment of the show, kids- [laughs]... write a postcard to gomez@fatbike.com And if you have a for real moment, let us know what it is. Yeah.
- 5:29We'll send you out a decoder ring and a temporary tattoo of a scary clown. And a voucher for the new Boba Fett figurine when it does become available through Kenner. All right, well- [laughs]
- 5:41All right, uh, Japanther take a quick break here before we talk to special guest, Kathy Merchant. [upbeat rock music] When it comes to fat bikes, Zion Cyclery in Zion, Illinois, has you covered.
- 5:59They stock fatties from Surly, Salsa, 907, Borealis, and Trek, as well as everything from 45NRTH.
- 6:08The staff is friendly, the mechanics are top-notch, and they stock the largest selection of fat bikes in the Chicago-Milwaukee area. There's a mountain bike park and some great beach riding in Zion.
- 6:19So come, make a day of it. Call 847-746-2200 or visit zioncyclery.com. [upbeat rock music] You're tuned- You're tuned- To Fat Bike- Fat Bike- Radio... Radio.
- 6:38Welcome to Fat Bike Radio. Who do we have on the line? Travis calling in. How you guys doing? Hey, Travis. Doing well. Travis, how are you?
- 6:47We just bumbled through the opening, uh, little bit there, and, uh, we're waiting for Kathy Merchant to chime in here, so that should be happening- Oh, cool... in a couple of minutes. What do you got going up there?
- 6:57Got a Sierra Nevada Hop Hunter IPA, 6.2%, 60 IBUs. Right on. All right. I like it when somebody calls in and knows their beer. [laughs] It's a tasty one. Infused with, uh, farm-distilled hop oils. Yeah.
- 7:14You see a six-pack of that, grab it. It's pretty tasty. Mm, cool. And, uh, yeah, my wife wanted me to, uh, mention there's a women's ride coming up in Anchorage here on November 19th at 2:00 PM.
- 7:25They're, uh, ending the- uh, it's on Bike Anchorage Facebook page. So if any ladies out there are interested in a ride, they're doing, I think, 10 or 12-mile ride, and they end up at a, at a, uh, wine store. Nice.
- 7:39Oh, nice. A tasting room. So is this something- Yeah... that somebody would want a fat bike for?
- 7:44You know, I think everybody's kind of wondering, and, uh, even some of my wife's friends are asking me, you know, "Hey, if it snows, can I still ride my mountain bike?"
- 7:53[laughs] And it's like, "Well, yeah, that, that's, we're coming to that time where we could get snow any day now, so."
- 7:59But, you know, that might be a, a better for a fat bike thing, but it's not a fat bike exclusive, so I imagine there'll be probably some people that maybe studded up mountain bikes as well if it does snow. Cool.
- 8:10Yeah- Yeah... they were around a long time before- Create a-... fat bikes, those fancy mountain bike things. Yeah, yeah. Yep. Well, soon- Change the screws and the tires.
- 8:19Soon enough there'll be snow and everything will go. Yes. So we're waiting on Kathy. Oh, did I, did, did I hear right when I was talking to Dee?
- 8:30I was listening to the, one of the shows I missed a couple weeks ago, and, uh, I kinda got the impression that, Gomez, you're not gonna make ITI, or? Our plans are in flux right now. Yeah, I, I'm- Got you.
- 8:44D- d- I'm offering it up to Sven. [laughs] And if Sven says, "No, I can't make it," I don't think that we don't go. Right. So then, then it would be me. Okay. But, you know, I'm, I'm- Okay...
- 8:54I'm more the, I'm more the runner-up to Miss America this year. [laughs] Just in case Miss America- [laughs]...
- 8:59cannot, uh, fulfill her obligations or she's double, double parked, and, uh, then, then I stand in, and, uh, you get, uh, Miss Congeniality. Right? Or something. Gomez. Speaking of, uh, Miss- It's a win-win...
- 9:13speaking of Miss Congeniality. [laughs] Hello, caller. Who do we have on the line? Hi. Uh, this is Katie Merchant. Hi, Katie. We just were talking about Miss Congeniality. [laughs] And, and your name came up. Great.
- 9:28[laughs] I'm lost. I'm lost, Katie. Oh, I'm found again. How are you? I'm back on the script. Good, good. [laughs] I'm, I'm pretty good. A little bit tired. I've been working really hard, and [clears throat]
- 9:41I've been guiding f- 47 days of, uh, mountain biking since September 1st and, uh, working in my office until 10:00 every night, but, uh, I'm doing pretty good. Very, very productive of you. Yeah.
- 9:53That, and that is hard work, man. Yep, for sure. Being a mountain bike guide, ay caramba, it sounds romantic, but ay, what a bunch of work.
- 10:01Ride all day and then cook and clean and put it away and all with a smile on your face, and- That's- Then now you, and then, then you come and, uh, try and run your other part of your whole, uh, existence, which is running events, right, Katie?
- 10:19Running events, yeah. Running the ITI, and, uh, getting ready for the expo and, uh, and the Big Fat Ride, and, uh, guiding all day long.
- 10:27[laughs] And also doing all the office work and running six websites and three Facebook pages, but, uh, hey, I have a lot of energy. Yeah, sounds like it.
- 10:37So, uh, what do you wanna tell us about the fabulous Big Fat Bike Ride and Expo event that's going on up there? That's why we've lured you here tonight. Yeah.
- 10:47Well, I, I kind of, y- I hear some more things coming together, s- people doing tours, guided tours, this and that. Just do you have any specifics on things that are already in place and are going to happen at the event?
- 10:59Uh, yeah, it looks really good for the vendors. Uh, we have, uh, 24 vendors so far, and, uh, we got 50 spaces available. All the, the big ones are gonna be there. Fatback, 9zero7, Salsa, Borealis, uh, Surly.
- 11:13All, all the big guys are gonna be there. I think there's frame bikes. And I, I went to Interbike in September and talked to a bunch of people there. Um, the Big Fat Ride is, is going really well.
- 11:25Uh, people are, have started to register for that, and, um, I really think we can set a record in Anchorage. Uh- Mm-hmm... there's an estimated 10,000 fat bikes in Anchorage. It's, I believe it's Fat Bike City- Wow...
- 11:37USA. It's- Yeah, it sounds like it... we have a really r- yeah, we have a good potential to set a record there. Uh- Nice... we have mailed out 100 posters. Right. I got, I got my posters. Great. I'm glad you got them.
- 11:51Uh, that was a lot of hard work making sure I got all the right sponsor logos on, on those, and, um, uh, we finalized our jerseys. We ordered 150 jerseys, and the orders are coming in for those. Nice.
- 12:03You can shop for them online on the, uh, fatbikeexpo.com website. All right. We'll put that in our show notes. Yeah, for sure...
- 12:11we have a bunch of, yeah, we have a bunch of awesome guest speakers, Jay and Tracy, uh, Petervary, they're salsa riders. We have Will Muhney from, uh, Costa Rica. In fact, I'm headed to Costa Rica on Sunday.
- 12:24I'm doing Fat La Ruta on my fat bike again- Oh, wow... starting November 5th. Yeah, he, we've, we've had, I think we did stories with him before.
- 12:31I know that I've, I've dealt, talked to him s- many times about the La Ruta. It sounds like a [laughs] sounds like a grueling event. Sounds like I've been, been murdering his last name, though. What? You have? Yeah. Ah.
- 12:44So are you gonna actually be, you're gonna be in Costa Rica, are you going to have an opportunity to talk to Will while you're there? Yeah, I've been talking to Will a lot.
- 12:52Will actually did our, uh, winter training camp up in Alaska, five days of training for the ITI in 2013, and, uh, he started fat biking in, uh, Costa Rica. He founded, uh, Team Corcov.
- 13:05I'm riding for his team, and he invited me over to, uh, to do La Ruta last year, and, uh, I, I had a lot of fun, and, uh, I'm going back there again this year.
- 13:15So I'll be, uh, staying at his house there, and, uh, we'll be talking about the, um, the ITI some more, and, um, him and his son are doing the 130-mile distance, uh, next year in February. Cool.
- 13:30Yeah, we'd actually, we'd love to talk to Will on the show sometime about Costa Rica there. Yeah, he'd be great, yeah. And, and cycling, 'cause I know he does a lot with people.
- 13:37He's got a l- he's got, you know, tons of stuff going on down there. He may have been the first fat biker, although Tom Laies goes down there, too. And he, he makes a sweet belt buckle that you can win for that race.
- 13:48Yeah, yeah, for sure. Gotta love that. All right, well- Yep, I'm going for the bel- I'm, I've been training hard. I'm going for the belt buckle this year. [laughs] Sounds great. All right, all right.
- 13:56Yeah, well that, that 47 days of guide action is gonna help that a little bit. Exactly. Plus you'll be able to, like- Well, yeah... whip up a- Yep, as soon as-... a delicious brownie...
- 14:05as I get back, I have, uh, 12 more of, uh- Yeah... 12 more days of guiding here in southern Utah, and then I'm gonna be definitely full swing ahead for, for, for the expo and Big Fat Ride. Um,
- 14:17uh, we have some awesome fat bike pioneers that are gonna be at the, um, expo. I, uh, I have invited Ray Molina- Mm-hmm... uh, from New Mexico.
- 14:27I really think that's where the birthplace of fat bikes was, and he's gonna have his bikes there, and Mark Grunwald, uh, Roger Cowles with the Six Pack, uh, Steve Baker, bunch of those guys that were toying with the idea of, you know, fat bikes in the late '80s and early '90s.
- 14:43That's very cool. Um, it's pretty cool stuff. Yeah, yeah. And that's, that's, like, the legit group, man. That's too cool. It's like having Tom Ritchie and Gary Fisher at your, uh, event. Right, right. Quite right.
- 14:56Yep, yep. I'm, I'm really thinking Fat Bike Hall of Fame in, in Anchorage, and I'm really having, uh, that on the radar as well. Uh, before I forget it, the raffle, uh, we'll have a raffle at the expo on Saturday night.
- 15:08We have two fat bikes, a Fatback and then Ninezero7. We have rims and tires from Vee Tires, and Surly rims and tires. We have frame bags, pogies, two airline tickets, and, uh, hopefully more stuff.
- 15:22Awesome things to win in the raffle there. Yeah, that's already a great list. Woo-hoo. I, I, this, here's the news, breaking news, doo-doo, doo-doo, doo, yeah, Spence is not going to Anchorage.
- 15:33[laughs] Well, here's what I was wondering.
- 15:35For those people who can't for whatever reason, is there a way to support the event without actually attending, like buy a T-shirt or enter the raffle or do something to participate in the event and help, you know, show that there's support for this kind of thing, but can't actually make the trip?
- 15:52Absolutely. They can buy raffle tickets. They can buy the fat bike jerseys- Mm-hmm... uh, under shop on, uh, fatbikeexpo.com. Uh, yeah, that, so they can, they can do those kinds of things.
- 16:05They can, um, buy jerseys, and they can buy raffle tickets. They don't have to be present at the raffle. Uh, we'll definitely mail raffle items to people that are from out of state or out, uh, overseas. Cool.
- 16:18Well, one of the nicest things that, that we talked to Kevin Breitenbach, I think it was last week, and he said that he's going to guide a casual ride out to Knik Glacier, and they're gonna be able to watch all the racers come by.
- 16:36So that sounded like, that sound- sounded right up my alley, that. Yeah, yeah. That sounded just- He said, I think maybe it was, like, an hour, hour and a half each way or something. Yeah. Yeah.
- 16:44So, uh, tell us a little bit about that. Yep, yep, that's on my list. Uh, Kevin, Kevin is doing a ride to Flattop Lake, not the Knik Glacier.
- 16:53That's another project I've got in the making for a, a photo shoot at, with a pro rider at the Knik Glacier. Mm-hmm. But the Knik Glacier is not on the Iditarod Trail.
- 17:02That's just a really awesome scenic place to ride, and I think we're gonna helicopter in the rider for, for the, for the photo shoot for promotional, uh, purposes.
- 17:12But Kevin is leading a ride at the start of the ITI on Sunday, February 28th, and, uh, he's leading a ride to a very scenic location. It's called Flattop Lake. Mm-hmm. And from Knik, that's about 30 miles.
- 17:25That's for advanced riders. We'll have shorter, uh, rides the same day as well, a 20-mile and a 10-mile ride.
- 17:32But for the more advanced riders with more endurance and experience, Kevin is leading a ride out to, uh, Flattop Lake, and that's actually the place we've done our training camps, uh, for the last 10 years.
- 17:45It's a very beautiful place, and I think they're gonna take off ahead of the racers so they can actually be already set up with a bonfire and then cheer on the racers as they come by. Right. Sounds like fun.
- 17:55Yeah, that does sound good. So do the, do the, um- Well, are you guys coming out for the expo? [laughs] Which, who's coming up to Alaska? We're, we're- We don't know yet...
- 18:03we're, we're mucking about with, uh- Spence and the, Spence got the pole position- Right... because I've been the last two years. Yeah.
- 18:09So, but, but- It's more, it's more a matter of logistics and making it actually work this year. Katie, you gotta talk him into it- [laughs]... because it's so beautiful up there.
- 18:15Not that I don't wanna go, that's for sure. Uh, he's afraid that he's gonna freeze to death. I'm afraid I'm not gonna come back here. [laughs] That's why I'm staying there.
- 18:21So you gotta, you gotta promise that, you know- He's gonna be all right Well, you should come to our training camp. You learn all about how to stay fed, and warm, and happy when it's cold out.
- 18:33That sound, yeah, it sounds like y- that's something that people, do they have to do that now in preparation for the race? Is, or is it- They either- If you do that, like is it a prerequisite of being a racer?
- 18:45Well, it's become so competitive and we can be so selective and we have so many applications that we have... Well, first off, the first week belongs to the race veterans and we fill 39 spots with returning racers.
- 19:00And then we have 10 people that did our last year's training camp, they get a guaranteed spot.
- 19:06So now they either have to have three qualifier events in the bag, finishes in three qualifiers, or they can do our five-day winter training camp in order to get into, um, the 350 mile race. All right.
- 19:25Good to know. So Sven will be all right if he goes, right? [laughs] I'm just kidding. [laughs] Yeah, I'm just kidding. So what else have you got for us, Katie?
- 19:35Any, anything else going on with your, with your ride and expo? Uh, I think the weather needs to turn a little colder. It's still in the 40s and then it's not quite freezing up at night.
- 19:46Uh, I talked about, um, bringing pro rider Pat Smage up for- Yes, Smage. Yeah... he's a fat bike rider for, um- We rode with the-... Photo Shoot and- We saw, we saw Pat on Sunday. He, he lives real close to us here.
- 20:01Good. He's a cool cat. I talked to him at Interbike and he's all psyched about coming up, and I think we'll have a way to get him out to the Knik Glacier too, to do, uh, take some awesome pictures. Yeah.
- 20:11We were, I, when you said- The Knik Glacier is like four miles wide...
- 20:14when you said that you were taking a pro rider out there, I was like, "Uh, I wonder if that's Pat," because we talked about he wanted to get some crust riding in, so. Mm-hmm. Very cool.
- 20:25Well, I think we're gonna have a, an exposition outside of the Egan Center in, in Anchorage where, you know, he's, he's such an amazing trials rider, and what he does on a, on a fat bike is just really, really awesome to watch.
- 20:37And I think between the expo and the Big Fat Ride and watching Pat on a, on a fat back there, uh, in the city park in Anchorage, of what he can do on a fat bike, I think there's gonna be a lot of fun events for everyone, whether they're a racer or just love to ride a fat bike.
- 20:54Um, I think there's gonna be a lot of fun to be had. Yeah. Anchorage is a great town. I think we've got fat bikers.
- 21:00Why don't, why don't you just, uh, give us the details, the date, the time, all that stuff again so everybody has it fresh on their mind? Okay.
- 21:09So the expo starts Friday, um, February 26th, and goes through, uh, Saturday the 27th. Um, the Big Fat Ride will take place, um, 11:00 to 2:00 PM on Saturday, February 27th.
- 21:25And the ITI start out of Knik, uh, just outside of Wasilla, will start on Sunday, February 28th at 2:00 PM. And then, you know, um, there's Fur Rondy is going on. That's a big and Alaskan event.
- 21:40A week later, the Iditarod starts. Um, I heard the Tour of Anchorage is starting a week later. It's historically a Nordic ski event, but they're adding a fat bike event as well.
- 21:50And then, um, so I think there's a lot of other fun stuff for people that are out of state, um, a lot, a lot more fun things to do while they're coming up to Alaska. So that's like a 10-day stretch you're talking about?
- 22:03Somebody would come on a Thursday and stay through to the following Sunday or Monday or something to catch a c- Absolutely... couple, two weekends worth of events. It's expensive to go to Alaska. Yeah, I bet.
- 22:12Better make it worthwhile. I would spe- I would spend about 10 days up there- Okay... if I was from out of state to make it worthwhile. Gotcha. I agree. Yeah.
- 22:20That's, that's the, that's the killer for me really- And, um, yeah, the Fur Rondy-... right now... um, there's, uh, we added a whole list of people that are offering rental bikes and demo bikes. Mm-hmm.
- 22:29And, uh, you know, Anchorage has a trail system of about 150 miles or more. Oh, yeah. And they, they don't even need grooming. There's so much fat bike traffic on those, they're always packed.
- 22:39[laughs] They're always packed down by just, by the, the tires rolling down the trails. And just fat bikes everywhere, and trail everywhere and- Just fat bikes everywhere...
- 22:48moose right in town and, uh, it's, it's, it's amazing. Yeah. Just like that show Northern Exposure, only with fat bikes. [laughs] Yeah. Yeah, yeah. Yeah.
- 22:59Well, Kathy, or Katie- Moose University, Anchorage is a great place... we really appreciate you coming on the show. You're always welcome to call in. You're a delightful guest. Okay.
- 23:09I can't, I can't wait till Sven chickens out and I get to come and meet you. [laughs] Right. Just kidding. [laughs] You'll probably get to meet Sven. Mm. I'll talk him into it. We'll see.
- 23:20You know, it's that family thing I gotta work with. Great. I look forward to meeting you, Sven. [laughs] Okay. Thanks, Katie.
- 23:26We'll, you know, we'll talk to you again probably a little bit closer to the event just to get some, some more specifics and if you have any new, new plans that show up between now and, and the 26th of February.
- 23:37Sounds great. I'm working on the schedule as far as guest speakers and when and what and where, and so, um, I'll, I'll certainly, um, call in again and when I have more details about that. Right on. Okay.
- 23:49Well, thanks for calling. Thanks for, thanks for having me on the show. Bye. You're tuned to Fat Bike Radio. Uh, what do you think, Travis? Katie Merchant on the line. That's awesome. Yes.
- 24:04I didn't realize the, the, uh, vendors had expanded that much already. Yeah. Yeah, you're gonna give a, you're gonna lend a hand doing something, right? Yeah, last I looked it was... What's that?
- 24:13I said, you're, you're lending a hand in some way to this thing, right? Yeah. In fact, k- uh, I'm supposed to talk with Katie this weekend or, uh, or later this week.
- 24:22She emailed me asking when a good time is to call, so, um, yeah, supposed to be getting together with her to try to go after some more local sponsorships for, you know-...
- 24:32snacks, some coffee, and some other things Beer... and some carbs. Beer. We've already got the beer covered. [laughs] Right. Yeah, she's got it covered. Excellent. All right, man. We've got another caller on the line.
- 24:47Let's just, uh, let's check in with, uh, who's lurking in the background. Welcome to Fat Bike Radio. It's the other... Yeah, it's, it's the other guy from Alaska that's not Travis. Tough Tupper. [laughs] Tupper.
- 24:59[laughs] It's like a big old happy reunion. Tra- Travis, why haven't I met you before? [laughs] Hey- I need to take a trip up, man. I need to come see you. See you. Or you need to come down and see me. I agree.
- 25:10I've met Travis, though. Right. [laughs] So you got- I haven't. I'm feeling left out... so you got that going for you. Yeah. Yeah. [laughs] So Tupper, nice, nice logos you got on that, uh, on...
- 25:22You, you- You got, you got the guy-... texted me some, you texted me some Snapchats of some hot logos. Are those, like, uh- Yeah... are those vinyl or something? Is that- They're, uh, Artic canvas- Oh...
- 25:36that I have laminated, uh, yeah... like, uh, like what you, like what you normally use for your logo on the bag? Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah, right on.
- 25:42But, uh, we picked those up today, and they, the, the Plus Bike logo ones look... Oh, man, they look great.
- 25:47And I think I'm gonna throw those on some down tube and top tube bags for you guys and send you off some bags here- Oh, killer... next week or so. Right on. Well, we got- Yeah...
- 25:55we got a, a lot of- We're gonna run a contest in, uh, in December. After, after our Toys for Tots contest ends, we're going to have
- 26:05a Becker Sewing and Design bag every week given away for, um- Yeah, you send your, your best picture in, your d- your best dick pic to Gomez's- Oh, no. [laughs]... cellphone. I'll give you guys his number. Oh.
- 26:17[laughs] Oh. No dick pics. You gotta give 'em Gomez, give 'em Gomez's number. No dick pics. Yeah, right, right. Just bike pics. Gomez or Swen, whoever. [laughs] That's not even funny, Tupper.
- 26:30[laughs] So, uh- Just edit, edit that out if you wouldn't mind. [laughs] Yeah, not. Right? Said, said nobody ever. Said nobody ever. Yeah. So, uh, do you have a, do you have a answer for this week's question, Samsquatch?
- 26:44What would you do if you met Samsquatch, like, uh, face to face? Oh, oh, oh, the Sasquatch? Is that, like, a, like, a real, an actual Sasquatch? I, I missed last week, last week's episode, so I didn't get the question.
- 26:55Yeah, that's the question. If you ran into him somewhere- Right... or, or her, uh, you know, what would you do? Yeah. Probably nothing.
- 27:02Like, I'm, I'm much more concerned about running into a moose on the trail than a Sasquatch. I mean, Sasquatch probably doesn't really wanna hang out and be seen with a human. Like, you know, they're so...
- 27:15You know, they're ninja-like. Well- Yeah, I don't know. I, I think I probably wouldn't do anything. That's a boring answer, though. I get that. But, uh- [laughs]... I don't think I'd do anything.
- 27:25[laughs] Tupper Becker, ladies- I'm not impressed, you know?... and gentlemen. Yeah. [laughs] From the Ice Box of America, this is Tupper Becker. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. But that's what I'd do. And, uh, yeah.
- 27:40So I've, I've got that, uh- Sorry.
- 27:42[laughs] Gomez laid that, uh, camouflage gas tank style bag on me, and I've just been monkeying with it a little bit and getting my camera to fit in there with my camera and a couple lenses, and it's, like- Yeah...
- 27:55almost perfect. It's really close to being perfect. And, uh, uh, I think it's, it's... I'm gonna talk to you about one minor modification, but boy, it's, it's really cool for carrying my DSLR around.
- 28:06Did we send you the tapered one or the, the straight, straight one? Yeah, tapered. With the taper down from the front to the back? Exactly. Okay. Yep. Yeah, we, we switched that one up.
- 28:16Um, we kinda did a prototype run of those and just played with them, and then, uh, I think we're gonna offer a different bag and maybe a couple different option levels on our top tube bag so you can, you know, they'll start at 30 bucks and go up.
- 28:29So just to give- I think a DSLR bag would be a good idea... people some options. Yeah, I, I, I'm, I'm gonna use it that way. It, uh- Yeah...
- 28:35what I would, the only thing I would change, if you can, I'm not sure if it's possible, is make the zipper more like a clamshell so that you can- Yeah... you can pull the...
- 28:43But right now to get the camera out it's not that easy. You kinda have to wiggle it out, and riding, that's tough, 'cause sometimes I just like to pull it out. Right. When people are riding alongside, I grab my camera.
- 28:52But yeah, I don't know if that's possible to make that kind of a, a zipper. It looks like a shark mouth- Yeah, something like that... or like a frown. Right. But turn it upside down and it's a smile. Turn it upside down.
- 29:03[laughs] Yeah. I would think I would want it to open, personally, I'd want it to open from the front of the bike. Peel it back like a- Yeah... like a, like a potato chip can, like a Pringles can, you know? Right.
- 29:14And then have that be zippable- Yeah... 'cause then I could whip it out of there real quick. I don't know, just an idea. I think- Yeah, no, we could, we can totally do that. Right on. We can totally do that. Yeah.
- 29:23Anyway, well, I'm, I'm glad I got the chance to call in and finally meet Travis, 'cause it's been months I've been trying to get ahold of the guy, and it's...
- 29:31I just thank you, Travis, for this opportunity to meet you guys and answer that question really lamely. So, uh- He, uh- Yeah. [laughs] Travis is our s- Let's ride, Tupper. Let's ride, man.
- 29:44[laughs] Travis is our shadow warrior up in Anchorage. You'll never see him- Yeah... until it's too late. [laughs] Oh, my God. Woo-tay, tay. Batman and Ronan should be able to fix that, right?
- 30:00[laughs] All right. Hey, not o- uh, not only are we back in action here at Fat Bike Radio, but we've, uh, we've got another caller on the line. Welcome, welcome- Hello... to the, our special radio program.
- 30:12Who are we talking to? This is, this is Samsquatch. Samsquatch. I did not... Samsquatch is calling into our show? Yeah. Hey, welcome to the program. I, I am, I am Samsquatch.
- 30:23I, I wear a Wookiee bandolier and no underpants. [laughs] Like a Samsquatch. So Samsquatch, I was, I was kinda wondering whether there was... Are there female Samsquatches out there? What is a female Samsquatch like?
- 30:37The, the female Sasquatch carry a jar of mayonnaise with them all the time. [laughs] It's lubricant. [laughs] So, uh, Samsquanch, do you, do you fat bike? Do you, do you ride a fat bike? I, I, I, I ride a Pugsley.
- 30:52Pugsley, remember that, that show from Addams Family? Yeah. And there was a guy named Pugsley- Uh-huh... that, that, that was little and his sister was, his sister was named Lurch.
- 31:02[laughs] And his uncle was, and his uncle was Gomez, and his other aunt was, uh, Morticia, and his other sister was Wednesday? I'm Sasquatch. [laughs] I, I think we've got the next name in the Surly bike line.
- 31:19[laughs] So, uh- But, uh, but a Sasquatch. Yeah, yeah, go ahead. Go ahead. I'm listening. I'm listening to you. What, what kind of drivetrain do you run on that Surly, Squatch? Oh, my, my size, my size are so big.
- 31:32If I were to shave my very hairy Wookiee legs, my, my drivetrain is 33/15 because I live in flat land, but I hide in the bushes. [laughs] I hide in the bushes because it's flat where I live, in Chicago.
- 31:43So, so you run, you run a single-speed? Yes, very much. Single-speed with a handlebar. If this is really Samsquanch, how many gnomes do you own? Oh, my goodness. Why do you have to ask me that?
- 31:59Because you know the answer will be 17. [laughs] It's really s- [laughs] It's really freaking Samsquanch. Samsquanch is on our show. That is, that is- I can't believe it...
- 32:09that is, that is me, Samsquatch, the Russian Sasquatch. [laughs] And you know what? I do know what. You know what? Oh, know what. I love you. I love you so much. [laughs] Whoa, we have Samsquanch on Gomez Love.
- 32:23[laughs] And you know what I wear every time I call you, you know what I wear on my face? War paint. I like to wear war paint when I call you because it makes me feel accomplished. Hmm. That's a good feeling, isn't it?
- 32:37[laughs] That's, I feel kind of accomplished now. It is, it makes me feel- Sam- Samsquanch just- Uh... told you, didn't he? [laughs] Uh, by the way, by the way, you know, Halloween is coming around the corner, right?
- 32:48Right. Uh, it is my birthday on Halloween, so if you want to wish me happy birthday, I will wish you happy candy, because that's what I do on Halloween. I give children candy, and I make them sing me happy birthday.
- 33:00Well, Feliz Mi Erquioles or Feliz Navidad or Feliz Cumpleaños, Samsquanch. No, no, no, no, no. No, no. N- Samsquatch like Feliz 4th of July. [laughs] Because you know why? Because of fireworks.
- 33:17And fireworks scares everybody. From, from my country, everybody gets scared because we're so hairy that if we get a firework in our tent, we burn with all the hair.
- 33:29[laughs] And nothing smells worse than a burning Squatch. Oy. Yes. Have you ever had ice cream delight? You know what that is? Vodka and [coughs] olive oil. [laughs] Oh, boy. [laughs] Oh, that doesn't sound good, though.
- 33:45Is that what... Is that- No... is that like a Squatch cocktail? [laughs] It's a pint- Vodka? No, it's a pint of vodka and a shot, and a shot of olive oil. Oh. Oh. Do you like it? If you don't like it- That's crazy...
- 33:57yes, the food is so good. Yeah. It is so good. And then you know what? Bacon. Bacon. Oh, yeah. Bacon and vodka is a good thing. Oh, oh, yeah. That I can, that I can attest to. Yeah, if you eat it.
- 34:07Especially if you go down- Yeah, I think we just- Especially with olive oil... I think we just had, like, a, a common, like, theme with, with Squatch. We had a moment- [laughs]... with Squatch.
- 34:16That, that, that- I, I can taste that drink right now... that was beautiful. Well, Squatch, we gotta go, man. We got people, we got other people that wanna talk- You know, I thought-...
- 34:23talk to us about- Yeah, but I think we've got a unique opportunity here. Go ahead. Go ahead. Go ahead. Really? We- Yeah... I love you. I love you all. Don't- I love you all...
- 34:29Sam, just hold on one more second, Sasquatch. Here. Hold on, Squatch. Don't- I think we got a, we got a u- Hey. Put the brakes on that train. [laughs] I think we have a unique opportunity here- Oh, anyways...
- 34:37because Travis is also on the line, and he can actually directly ask Samsquanch a question. Oh. So this is- I, I want, I want the question from Travis. Who, who is this Travis? Who is this Travis? Hey, Samsquatch.
- 34:48Uh, I'm Travis up in Alaska, and, uh- Hi. Hi. You know, uh, hello, sir. I, I think you have a couple of distant relatives up here, uh, the Abominable Snow Yeti and the Aquatic Moth Yeti. Oh. Yes, yes, yes.
- 35:04We all get together every May, and you know what we do? We play Goldfish, because it's the only card game we know how to play. That's- I thought you guys knew how to play Uno... [laughs] Samsquatch doesn't do Uno.
- 35:16Uh, no, no. My sister, my sister took Uno back to New York, so we all have to play Goldfish. I love Goldfish. But you know what? Remember this: a pint of vodka and a shot of olive oil, it will grow hair on your chest.
- 35:30Well, you would know, man. You would know. This is true. Because I have, I have a lot, because I drink a lot. One last question for you, Squatch. Uh, what kind of conditioner do you use?
- 35:41Oh, [laughs] you know what sperm whales are from? [laughs] From the ocean. [laughs] Oh, this is terrible. [laughs] Save the whale- Okay. You guys have a- Save the whales. Save the whales. [laughs] Save the whales.
- 35:57[laughs] Yes. You guys have a good night. All right. All right. Later. Thanks, man. Bye-bye. Okay. Bye, Squatch. Bye. Sasquatch, ladies and gentlemen. It is.
- 36:05I think we officially verified that that really was Samsquanch too, right? Who else would know how many gnomes he, that Samsquanch owns? He owns. Right on. Well, you know what?
- 36:15Let's take a break here, uh, and then we'll come back and, uh, I don't know. We gotta do next week's question still, so. I, yeah, it's the Fatty Farm Field Report when we return right after this.
- 36:26But before that, we'll find out [laughs] what next week's question is. [laughs] No way. [laughs] That was so good, though. [laughs] You're tuned to Fat Bike Radio.
- 36:42Hey, this is Rebecca Rush, and, uh, you are listening to Fat Bike Radio with Spud and Gomez. So, uh, if you're too lazy to get out and go for a ride, I guess you could always listen about it on the radio.
- 36:54And we are back, oddly enough. Uh, what's next week's call-in question, JK? We ask the question, embrocation? Cyclocross racers light their ride fuse with fiery elixirs and ointments. Do you embrocate?
- 37:11Commando last week- Bro- Embrocate this week [laughs] It's like... Although, this is one of those things you don't wanna get near your man parts, isn't it? It's true. Yep. So- You can tell where Gomez's mind is at.
- 37:24It's like right there. Well, yeah. So if you use this embrocation business or you do embrocation, I don't even know the correct term for it- Or the empastases...
- 37:32what benefits do you receive from said treatment of your- Yeah... your legs? Whatever. I'm, I'm embrocation curious 'cause I ride a lot and, you know, I like the word ointment, so. Moist ointment. Moist.
- 37:46[laughs] Call in next week Wednesday from 8:00 to 9:00 Central Standard to 818-918-2453, and let's discuss this live. And now, you've been waiting for it. [laughs] This week's Fatty Farm Field Report.
- 38:04[laughs] [singing] Chicka bow, chicka bow wow. Which, which this week is sponsored by Uncle Dick's Bead Slip. Check out, uh, the still remodeling-his-house Uncle Dick at uncledicksbikeshop.com. I think it's the garage.
- 38:18It's the roof of the garage, the carriage house, whatever. Yes. But anyway, thanks, Uncle Dick, for your support. If Uncle Dick was here, I would, uh, I would be like, "Hey, dude, let's- Party...
- 38:30put together a Toys for Tots ride here in Milwaukee at Santa Rampage," but instead I'll just, we'll just talk about our Toys for Tots contest. Yeah. We're gonna...
- 38:44Something'll happen in Milwaukee for sure, whether we're here to do it or not. There'll definitely be a Milwaukee chapter of the Toys for Tots gathering t- fat bike ride. They may all go- But we can't win the prizes.
- 38:55Well, no. No, but- That doesn't mean we can't- You guys out there- That doesn't mean we can't play with them before we give them away, though. Oh, it's true.
- 39:01It has to be unwrapped, new, and in the box, so yeah, we could play with them. Right. Speaking of which, today the grand prize, the person that organizes the Toys for Tots drive that gathers the most toys is- How...
- 39:17Uh, so does Toys for Tots count the toys and then they're the independent arbitrator of said, uh, count or are we- I do not believe we are gonna go on the honor system, and they have to, they have to post a picture of a big-ass pile- All right...
- 39:29of toys. Right. If they say they have 1,400 toys, there's gotta be a big-ass pile, right? Right. For sure.
- 39:34Um, so it's gonna be a photo and the number, and we're gonna go on the honor system, but the winner is going to get a medium Surly Moonlander limited edition Farmer- John Deere green... and Farmer Ops,
- 39:51and that's what was sitting in front of my garage today when I left the home. So I'm not guaranteeing that that bike will not actually come out of the box. [laughs] Maybe get ridden around a little, you know? Yep.
- 40:05You've got a, you've got a Murly, Murly Man Chubby for one. Yeah, I, I, you know, I love me some Moonlander, for sure. Moonlander, Moonlander [laughs] Man Chubby. [laughs] Moonlander Man Chubby.
- 40:19[laughs] Actually, that's your next- Next week's secret word. Yeah. [laughs] Actually, wait a second. That's a good, that's a good plus bike name. Somebody should do the Man Chub. The Man Chub. Man Chubby.
- 40:28Yep, that's a good name for... Or a fat bike. Man- Man Belly... Yay. So I also [laughs] Oh, yay.
- 40:37So, uh, yeah, organize your Toys for Tots deal and, uh, you could win the Moonlander, a OneUp USA rack, or a fabulous Bontrager product. And there's already a story on the site about it- Right...
- 40:48so people could actually go there and, like, "Look at it." "Check it out." And I, I read a pretty cool quote from, uh, a contributor down there in Australia, name of Ross Cairns.
- 41:00He said, "A fatty in the shed is worth two on the internet." [laughs] I, I'm trying to wrap my head around that one.
- 41:10It's like you're looking at two bikes on the internet and you can't decide which one to buy, but the one in your shed is way better than the ones that you're looking at that are just pixels. Oh, right, right.
- 41:20Okay, yeah, sure. Absolutely. Like a real bike. A real bike you can ride. I think there's gonna be a ton of, uh, either earlier or, you know, a r- couple-year-old fat bikes 'cause people are upgrading pretty quickly.
- 41:32You get the bug and you wanna upgrade. Yeah. Yeah, yeah. So if, if somebody's looking to get into it, I bet they could get into a used fat bike for a pretty fair price. They're out there, that's for sure.
- 41:41And that just enables the guy that wants the better bike- Right... to spend more money on it.
- 41:47So I also learned Dave Wiens, you know, of the mountain bike fame pro racer, he's from Crested Butte, and, uh, he just got his first fat bike to, uh, so he can race the Fat Bike Worlds in his native Crested Butte, Colorado.
- 42:05That's a sweet idea. Yeah. So you, uh, you know- Did I ever tell you the story about when Ralph took Dave Wiens out in the, uh- [laughs] Yeah, it was a, a long time ago during the- Yeah... Iron Horse in- Oh, yeah...
- 42:15out of, uh, uh, Durango to Purgatory, and something happened and they crashed. I don't think he was totally out of the race, but it was in, like, the first mile and a half.
- 42:23And that's the race that he's famous for- Yeah... is, is that Silverton race that, uh- Yep... the one where they race the train Race the train, Iron Horse.
- 42:31Yeah, so yeah, somehow Ralph had something to do [laughs] with that. Ralph's no longer with us, but [clears throat] he was a great, great rider, racer guy. So you wanna know what kind of bike Wiens got? Yeah. No.
- 42:41[laughs] Yeah, no. What bike did he get? He got a Canyon Dude. Dude. Dude. Dude. Hmm. That sounds like something that I would be interested in his opinion of. Yeah. Carbon, a very, uh, Euro brand. You know, feel to it.
- 42:56We could probably get him on the show. He'd probably talk to us about coming to Crested Butte, 'cause he, I know he likes that place. Yeah. Well, Dave, I know you're listening out there. Just give us a call.
- 43:07You can listen to the show like, uh, like Travis. Yeah. [laughs] T-Bone. [laughs] So, uh, what else we got?
- 43:16Some, uh, some Surlys are showing up on the showroom floors of some of your better bicycle retailer establishment-y places out there. Yeah, yeah.
- 43:25The Wednesdays, you can get Wednesdays-ed at your, uh, local bike shop now. Like, only if it's legal in your neighborhood, kids. [laughs] 'Merica. 'Merica. 'Merica.
- 43:36So, uh, you know, we have just a bunch of bikes on the slate. We have some in-house right now, like the Frame Wolf Tracks and the Richie Commando I'm giving some test love to.
- 43:47We got a Trek Farley 9.8 carbon bike that Aaron Houtala up there in, uh, Cuyuna land is testing. Yep. We've got- Sven is gonna get a RSD Mayor. Plus, on the Plus bike side, we already have the Sergeant- Right...
- 44:01that's, like, halfway through its, its cycle. And our, uh- I got the first ride on that last weekend. Boy, that thing is fun. Yeah. Yeah. I'm not used to that long a fork yet. I gotta kinda dial in my
- 44:12140 millimeter travel. I'm just, I've, I've, I've come from the old school, so I know 100's, like, a lot to me. [laughs] Yeah, we just gotta work with, uh, our friends at the- Look at that...
- 44:23at the Hays Bicycle Group there and get that thing race tuned for you, man. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Give, give OG a call and see who to hook up with there to do some race tuning. Right on. What else we got?
- 44:35We got, uh- You guys get that S-Works headed my way? Uh, I'm sorry, you broke up there. I- [laughs] Listen, I, I think we have a bad connection, Travis. Uh, did you say, did you say, uh- Did you get- Did you say-...
- 44:46that S-Works headed my way? [laughs] A Mongoose? You want, you want a Mongoose with a Bluto? No problem. We, we'll, we'll hook you up. [laughs] Just kidding. Hey. God, that was loud.
- 44:59I thought you were gonna send that up. I was gonna give it to you right after the Birki. [laughs] Oh, so we, there's this, like, little trade going on here. Yeah, yeah, it's a good idea. That is a good idea. I know.
- 45:09He's been thinking about this. [laughs] Yeah, he's working... Well, see, work, it's as simple as working, working out the logistics. He's a specialized man.
- 45:18He's like, he's, he's like a secret agent for Specialized, perhaps. Speaking of secret agents, that you brought that Commando in today. Yeah, yeah, yeah. And we took some pictures of it. Right.
- 45:27And I'm like, "Man, you could look like a secret agent on that thing out in the woods," because it looked like you're just kinda floating by. I'm telling you. The bike would kind of disappear into the background.
- 45:35And you put, I have a brown Brooks Swi- Ty Swift saddle. Oh, la, la. You're gonna have, like, possums hanging from underneath it and stuff? Oh, yeah. I, I'm loving that bike. [laughs] Damn, swang.
- 45:48I got a, like, man, I got a, I got a Commando. [laughs] Size man chubby. [laughs] Oh, JK and I are losing it. Oh, shoot. Oh, my God. That's funny. This happens every...
- 46:06This should be, like, this should be a new bit, actually. It's like, "We're gonna get into the part where JK and Gomez [laughs] lose it" section of the show. [laughs] Oh, my. It always happens about this time.
- 46:15Oh, does it? 10 minutes before we're done. Yeah. I think I just had a small stroke. [laughs] Um, would, and then we have, would James Bond rock a fat bike in the links? Yeah. Which is pretty funny. What about that?
- 46:27From Gear Junkie, and that's one of JK's links there. I know. I was just thinking how link-baity that, that headline sounds. It's like- Yeah... you know, James Bond's kind of happening now, and- Spectre coming out soon.
- 46:38Yes. Yes. Shat- Shat- [laughs] Okay, um, we should do a, a, a Shatner on a fat bike post just to get the, we could just gather all the clicks from Google doing that. Yeah, yeah.
- 46:48Actually, we should get old Bill on a fat bike. That'd be cool. Yes. So okay, so amongst these links, there's this one here about, uh, an actual guided tour to the South Pole- [laughs]...
- 47:01where this company thinks they can make this happen. Apparently they got some experience doing other similar things, and for 70,000 bucks or so- I-... this is something you could do... god.
- 47:13I could get a, I could get a bachelor's degree for that. [laughs] What, I could get it for, like, 10 people. [laughs] My 10 cousins are all going on that 70 grand. [laughs] Oh, well. That's what you get, son.
- 47:30So, uh, what else do we got? We got Tony Lund showing up on a 29 plus bike. Yeah, I think he has a Borealis with a 29 plus wheel set on for the races he's doing. Mm-hmm, mm-hmm.
- 47:42And, uh, yeah, he just, he's- He has been around... he won, he wo- he just won something. I forget what it was called. The Levi 24, I think. A 24-hour race. Yeah. He has been around for as long as we've been in biz.
- 47:55Yeah. You know, Tony. Yeah, true that. He's, he's an early adapter. Early. He's probably old like us now. Not. [laughs] He's probably still young.
- 48:05All right, Travis, you got anything, uh, anything else for us before we wrap this puppy up?
- 48:11Nah, man, just, you know, you guys show me the, let me know when that S-Works is showing up, and, uh, I'll be sure to start working hard on a review for you. [laughs] All right.
- 48:20We'll put, uh, we'll, we'll pull, we'll put our best person on that. [laughs] We'll put, we'll go ahead and- [laughs] We're gonna go ahead at warp factor 10 towards that goal. [laughs] [laughs] I appreciate your efforts.
