Latest / Early Edition with Ryan Bridge / Ryan Bridge: What's the problem with the label 'pregnant women'?
Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: So we have senior doctors going on strike. We're in
- 0:03Speaker 1: the midst of a global trade war, not that Winston
- 0:06Speaker 1: will let us call it that anymore. We have inflation
- 0:09Speaker 1: potentially picking up again. We have a lot going on
- 0:11Speaker 1: in this country, not to mention around the world. Right.
- 0:15Speaker 1: But there. I was sitting down to watch the news
- 0:18Speaker 1: last night and the second lead story was about whether
- 0:21Speaker 1: women or people could get pregnant. Fact is, nobody in
- 0:26Speaker 1: the story said it was solely women who get pregnant.
- 0:30Speaker 1: Casey Costello herself says non binary and trans people can
- 0:33Speaker 1: get pregnant too, which is true. They may have been
- 0:36Speaker 1: born female, but they identify as something else. Now, the
- 0:39Speaker 1: question is whether mass communications issued by Health New Zealand
- 0:44Speaker 1: should speak of pregnant women. To make things clear, here's
- 0:49Speaker 1: the thing about it. The story I watched included exactly
- 0:53Speaker 1: zero of these people who are apparently so offended by
- 0:56Speaker 1: the term pregnant women. The Midwives Union, women, the government
- 1:01Speaker 1: preferred women. Even Chris Hopkins, when asked yesterday, said basically
- 1:05Speaker 1: women was fine for mass communications. So where's the problem here.
- 1:09Speaker 1: If somebody identifies as a different gender, then you personalize
- 1:13Speaker 1: the message, You tailor the message to their needs. The
- 1:17Speaker 1: reason these things rile people up so much is because
- 1:20Speaker 1: it reinforces this idea that we've got a bunch of
- 1:23Speaker 1: social scientists and bureaucrats with the genders running around Wellington
- 1:28Speaker 1: wasting time and tax payer money coming up with this stuff. People,
- 1:32Speaker 1: including I'm sure non binary people, would prefer a hospital
- 1:36Speaker 1: system that has enough beds and surgery slots to cater
- 1:41Speaker 1: for them. Surely that has to be the priority number
- 1:44Speaker 1: one when it comes to health. For more from Early
