Transcript
- 0:00Break Fix podcast is all about capturing the living history of people from all
- 0:05over the autos sphere, from wrench, turners, and racers to artists, authors,
- 0:09designers, and everything in between.
- 0:11Our goal is to inspire a new generation of Petrolhead that wonder.
- 0:16How did they get that job or become that person?
- 0:19The road to success is paved by all of us because everyone has a story.
- 0:27Michelle Mutan, Janet Guthrie, Lynn St. James Danica, Patrick Simona de
- 0:32Silvestro, and the late Sabine Schmid.
- 0:35These are names many of us recognize in the racing Hall of Fame and without
- 0:38women like our guest tonight, a woman who avidly promotes the empowerment
- 0:42of women in motor sport with boundless enthusiasm, encouraging women's
- 0:46participation in all roles of auto racing.
- 0:48Countless new names would be left off this list.
- 0:51Motorsports opportunities or MORacing for short was created to inspire, mentor
- 0:56and amplify opportunities to drive crew or avidly spectate at the racetrack.
- 1:01Joining us on Break Fix to tell us all about her Motorsports journey and how
- 1:05she built MORacing is Founder and Chief Innovation Officer Maureen McVail.
- 1:10Tanya, and as Maureen has mentioned to us behind the scenes, this story is 22 years
- 1:16in the making and we welcome her to break fix, to share that story with everyone.
- 1:20So welcome, Maureen.
- 1:21Thank you so much, both of you, for a wonderful invitation.
- 1:25Normally we would just jump right into the who, what, where, or when of.
- 1:29Whatever, or whoever we're we're talking to or about.
- 1:32But we realize there's a lot more to the MORacing story than meets the eye.
- 1:36So we think it's fair that we start with Maureen the Petrolhead, and
- 1:40see how she got into motor sports.
- 1:42In 1999.
- 1:43I had a newborn, my second son, and instead of getting a minivan, I got a 1984
- 1:50Porsche Carrera and knew that it belonged on a racetrack and not on the streets.
- 1:56But what drove you to that?
- 1:57Pun intended.
- 1:58I love it.
- 1:59The honest story is I was married at the time and now have a wonderful co-parent.
- 2:06We divorced and I will not say it was over the driving stuff, but might
- 2:10have had something to do with it.
- 2:11Instead of getting an engagement ring, I wanted a black Wrangler geek to show
- 2:16that my true love wanted to marry me.
- 2:18He promised the black Wrangler g. Then after our second child was born, I
- 2:23didn't see the Black Wrangler Jeep yet.
- 2:25So I changed it and I said, now I want a black Porsche.
- 2:29And so we went out searching and looked around and found a beautiful
- 2:351984 Carrera, which I brought my then seven month old home in one of
- 2:41those baby carriers in the backseat.
- 2:43And I did not think that was terribly unsafe because.
- 2:47Porsches are made of steel up.
- 2:48I'm gonna say, I'll look that a car is way more practical than the ring.
- 2:53I like where your head was at.
- 2:55Yeah.
- 2:56So again, having a toddler and mommies and mes expecting me to show them my new van.
- 3:01I took my 1984 Carrera and got addicted driving in high performance
- 3:07driver's ed at Pocono Raceway.
- 3:09After that first time around driving, I knew I was hooked.
- 3:13Then in 2000 through 2005, I drove that same Porsche, and of course it got more
- 3:20and more modified, and I did some of the work myself, including changing the brakes
- 3:25at the track, changing out brake pads.
- 3:28So Maureen, were you always a petrolhead?
- 3:30Because this is already into your adult life where you go, I want a Porsche.
- 3:33What drove you to a sports car?
- 3:35I come from a family of educators.
- 3:38My dad was a classical music professor, my mom a teacher, and I
- 3:41always mention, 'cause I'm so proud, she had her master's from Harvard.
- 3:45So she was no shrinking violet because I did not have any automotive background.
- 3:51I swear that this is just natural.
- 3:53I used to joke that Mario Andretti was my real father and that did
- 3:57bother my real biological father who sent me a Christmas card once.
- 4:01Loved Mario.
- 4:02But anyway, that aside.
- 4:04In 1972, my father was on sabbatical with the entire family and we
- 4:10bought, we noticed I was probably 11.
- 4:12I still think I had something to do with it.
- 4:15Bought a Mercedes-Benz two 20 diesel oil, and that is what, five years
- 4:19later, I learned how to drive in stick shift, which I believe and.
- 4:23Tanya maybe can help me with this is I'm trying to find out what percentage of
- 4:28women drive manual transmission so we can figure that out together in the future.
- 4:33It's a very small percentage.
- 4:34Yes, very small.
- 4:36A single digit.
- 4:37I think the number is increasing though, because I know a lot of women that have
- 4:40said as they've gotten older, they're like, I wish I learned, or I. Bond
- 4:44Day bought a manual and I learned and I'm like, wait, you drive a manual?
- 4:47Really?
- 4:48I'm always pleasantly surprised, but I'm always like, yes,
- 4:51another person driving a manual.
- 4:53I get excited about that.
- 4:54I think it's a good thing.
- 4:55Your enthusiasm for them Driving stick is the same as my enthusiasm.
- 4:59I know that I've personally had an impact on at least 15 people joining
- 5:05High Performance Driving and some of them buying a Miata, which is fine with me.
- 5:10I don't care what it is.
- 5:11Just so you enjoy driving it.
- 5:13People who borrowed my car are now HPDE addicts.
- 5:17Then a big time move.
- 5:19I sold that highly modified 84 Carrera, and I bought a friend's modified cup car.
- 5:26Yes, that is a cup car with a very tall first gear, which
- 5:29I stalled out several times.
- 5:31Oops.
- 5:32My first time driving it after I went sideways in turn nine at Watkins
- 5:37Glen, after a year of driving the cup car, I said, okay, it's for
- 5:40sale so that I don't sell it all.
- 5:43Crumpled up.
- 5:43Sold that and went to a RS America, which I drove and also we
- 5:49campaigned and Porsche Club racing.
- 5:52So my co-owner of that car is a guy, but he's one of the girls.
- 5:57Anyway, we'll get to that later.
- 5:59Then in 2011 I bought a 9, 9, 6 for myself for street driving and then started
- 6:06loaning that car out for de events.
- 6:09Two women drove it at Sebring in uh, driver's ed.
- 6:12I had it shipped down and shipped back.
- 6:14I'm in the Philadelphia area, so that was quite a feat.
- 6:182011, I mentioned the 9, 9 6, but it also, a key time in that date is
- 6:23I had a co-ed event for the women's round table, which had only had women
- 6:29gatherings and I had that at the Symon Museum, which you should look up if
- 6:33you have not been in the Philadelphia area, is a premier car collection.
- 6:38And Dr. Fred Simeon is wonderful, so I'm very proud of that.
- 6:42I had a gathering there.
- 6:43We had an opera singer and people bring in Porsches and of course
- 6:47the 50 some cars there on display.
- 6:49So that brings us to 2012 through 2019.
- 6:53Of course, I selling the other ones out from under me.
- 6:56My Cayman S was co-owned and we ran that in GTB one Porsche Club racing.
- 7:02When I say we ran it, I did not drive.
- 7:04I was semi-retired by now.
- 7:06My reaction time is not as great as it used to be.
- 7:10I still enjoy driving, but I find it, it's much more competitive now.
- 7:14So I've never raced myself.
- 7:16I have co-owned a race car and ran a racing team, so that brings us to 2020.
- 7:23After selling the G GTB one, I got a Ford Mustang for a
- 7:27women's She leads road rally.
- 7:30Say that 10 times fast.
- 7:31She leads Road Rally, which I was the Pace car.
- 7:36We had a police escort in and out of Philadelphia and in and out of
- 7:40Scranton where we had a pit stop going to Seneca Falls, please look
- 7:44up Seneca Falls and see what it means as far as women's development.
- 7:48And it was the first Women's Rights Convention back in 1870 something.
- 7:53The road rally was a huge success, even considering it was done during COVID.
- 7:57We had 25 cars and about 55 people.
- 8:01Probably without COVID it would've had busloads of people.
- 8:04There was a lot of interest in it.
- 8:06I also wanna add to my resume.
- 8:08I bought in 1998, M three, which was one of my favorite cars, which
- 8:13I lent out to have women drive in.
- 8:16DE had 200,000 miles on it and it was a wonderful car and
- 8:20I really regret selling it.
- 8:22And finally it brings us to 2022.
- 8:26I just purchased a 2008 9, 9 7, and I am learning about it.
- 8:32And my goal with this car is that I will do personally all of the work on it.
- 8:37Of course.
- 8:38Using a friend's lift.
- 8:39So that brings us to the present.
- 8:41Looking at your driving history over the last 20 plus years, somewhere in
- 8:46there, the idea for MORacing was born.
- 8:49So what was the driving factor?
- 8:51What was the catalyst that suddenly you woke up one day and
- 8:54say, I need to do this, and why?
- 8:56I'm into Palindromes because I'm a linguist and I have a bachelor's in
- 9:00Russian, and no, that doesn't help anything and it's coming in helpful.
- 9:04Now I can read what's going on in the news.
- 9:06The palindrome that I use kind of as my motto is so many dynamos.
- 9:11You can read it both directions.
- 9:13So many dynamos is the same both ways.
- 9:15And back to the percentages again.
- 9:18I know that more than 50% of the world is occupied by women and they
- 9:23are driving force, quote unquote.
- 9:26I wanted to see more women around at the track, and so basically
- 9:31I'm admitting to you I'm a sexist.
- 9:33I believe that there should be more women.
- 9:36Men who treat them just as drivers, which is what led me to want to do
- 9:41more racing because I had male allies and the male allies, to me is the best
- 9:48part of what I'm doing because I get men who say I have daughters or I have
- 9:52sisters, or I, my mother were petrolhead as you call them, or car enthusiasts.
- 9:58So that's what got me going.
- 9:59I wanna ask you one that normally I think we would make almost consider
- 10:03it a pit stop question, but this is important to the story that we're
- 10:06telling here today, and that's the development of these alternate motors
- 10:12sports events like the WF one W series.
- 10:16There's all these Yeah, the W series.
- 10:18I wanted to get your take on that construct, that idea, and how
- 10:23you feel about the future of that or, or where it should be going.
- 10:26And now I'm going to tread very gently because there are different opinions
- 10:32on the W series and my personal opinion is I don't wanna piss anybody off.
- 10:38My thrust of what I'm saying is that men and women can compete on the same level.
- 10:44Therefore, the Women's Series is not a great thing because
- 10:48it's kind of a showcase.
- 10:50Now, I will say that my male allies who bring articles to me and
- 10:55constantly are saying, you should meet so and so and such and such.
- 10:58Bringing it back to Don Cox, he believes that the Women's series
- 11:02is a great thing because it's spotlighting the women drivers.
- 11:07Not that they're women, but that they're drivers who are women.
- 11:11So that's my take on the Women's W Series and Pippa Mann got really involved in
- 11:17arguing the other side of that, meaning I think she's with me, that men and
- 11:21women should be able to compete using the great neutralizer called a car.
- 11:26The machine that propels us all to fast in the same way, regardless
- 11:29of who's behind the steering wheel.
- 11:31So what exactly did MORacing start?
- 11:33What are you guys into?
- 11:34Are you strictly HPDE?
- 11:36Are you doing all branches of Motorsport MORacing started 2016.
- 11:42We chi the 9, 9 6 down to Seabring.
- 11:45Where I had a coach ready for two friends that flew down, so
- 11:50that's when MORacing started, but it was under a different name.
- 11:54If you're familiar with Shift Up now, shift Up was originated
- 11:58between Lynn Keho and myself.
- 12:01In fact, I'm very proud to have designed the logo.
- 12:04But anyway.
- 12:05Shift up was then renamed to shift up.
- 12:07Now when Lynn and I separated my interest being HPDE and Lynn's interest being the
- 12:15athletes that she has, and I believe Lynn has now given shift up over to Pippa Man.
- 12:21Who I wanted to mention should be in your lineup of women that you
- 12:25mentioned early on, plus again, so many other dynamos, Catherine Legg,
- 12:30et cetera, et cetera, et cetera.
- 12:31There's so many, it's hard to keep track of, but Pippa Man is
- 12:35now heading up, shift up now.
- 12:37So MORacing started then.
- 12:40I just didn't name it yet.
- 12:41Still don't love the name because I'm not a racer.
- 12:44I am a race car and race team manager and crew chief, and.
- 12:50Many bottle, washer, whatever you wanna call it, it's still going on.
- 12:53And you asked what we are involved in and we is, there are two women that help
- 12:59with the website and communications, and this really is just growing now,
- 13:05I swear it's manifesting itself as we speak because I just met and spent some
- 13:10time with Beth Coretta last Tuesday, a week ago today in Indianapolis,
- 13:14where she was a keynote speaker.
- 13:16Speaking of which, I do some speaking engagements, which is not my forte, but
- 13:21I am really good at giving clinics and workshops to the likes of Girl Scouts.
- 13:27All girls schools, girls can do anything.
- 13:30Group religious groups, I don't care who it is, young.
- 13:33Kids who drag their feet and they're like, okay, what are we doing now?
- 13:37And then when they get to sit in the race car and change the lug nuts
- 13:41on a race car, they definitely have a smile and a grin on their face.
- 13:45And I know that somebody out of that group is going to pursue a STEM career.
- 13:50Whether they know it or not.
- 13:52And that's my goal.
- 13:53So our audience might be surprised to know that you're actually friends with
- 13:57one of our previous guests on Break Fix, a lady by the name of Miss Mary
- 14:01Hague, who was on here talking about her STEM program known as Moon Mark,
- 14:05where they're doing a lunar race.
- 14:07And Tanya was on that episode as well.
- 14:09Mary and I go back, she's friends we met at the track and uh, always a
- 14:13delight to have on the show, but you're personal friends with her, obviously
- 14:15coming up through the Philadelphia area.
- 14:17So in the vein of that episode that we did, we talked a lot about.
- 14:20Dem and a lot about inclusion and diversity and things like that.
- 14:24Well, you mentioned your prior podcast with Mary Hague and I happened to just
- 14:29go to the auto show with her last Friday, so we were hanging out and I brought my
- 14:3526-year-old son along and the two of them met that evening and chatted for hours.
- 14:41It seemed like Mary is the best.
- 14:43She's another dynamo of so many dynamos.
- 14:46A lot of folks often confuse.
- 14:48Getting into racing with having to have some sort of engineering
- 14:52or technical background.
- 14:53I wanted to get your opinion as you're working on these clinics as to what are
- 14:57some of the barriers to entry into racing?
- 14:59Is it really as difficult as people make it seem?
- 15:02Is it really that geeky?
- 15:03Do you need a background in hard sciences to get involved in racing?
- 15:07It's not difficult to get involved 'cause I use myself as an example.
- 15:10I was a mother of two toddlers and have a bachelor's in Russian and
- 15:16do not speak English terribly well.
- 15:18And I registered, showed up and my first event happened to be with the
- 15:22BMW Club even though I had a Porsche.
- 15:25People are welcoming into this.
- 15:27And it is not at all necessary to be mechanically knowledgeable
- 15:31or anything geek like you can just show up and have some fun.
- 15:35And the impetus for me to do it was to go fast.
- 15:38I'll circle back to the clinics thing 'cause I find that very interesting.
- 15:40You mentioned that you're just from the Philadelphia area, so are you
- 15:44across the United States having impact, or right now you're localized
- 15:47in the northeast, Mid-Atlantic region, or what's the goal there?
- 15:51The goal is to have worldwide, let alone nationwide.
- 15:55I'm dating myself here by having home economics.
- 15:59We learned how to sew, hems and cook.
- 16:02So instead, I think there should be car maintenance class, maybe a three
- 16:06to four series workshop or class.
- 16:09And along with check balancing, um, that's called race car budgeting.
- 16:16Call that Porsche dollars.
- 16:17Get it.
- 16:18Porsche.
- 16:19There's a Porsche tax.
- 16:20Don't forget.
- 16:21Oh yes.
- 16:22Trust me.
- 16:23I just went through that.
- 16:24I think your clinic aspect is really great.
- 16:26So what are you doing there specifically?
- 16:29Like what are some of the activities?
- 16:31Is it you got your race car there and you're doing demonstrations, or
- 16:34are you doing even mini STEM type?
- 16:37Activities, they're building something or I have a handout that, number one, I
- 16:43let them try on fire suits and helmets.
- 16:46And again, this was all pre COVID because with COVID I haven't done any workshops or
- 16:51clinics, which makes perfect sense to me.
- 16:54Prior to that, just engaging the kids in safety and asking me questions and you
- 16:59know, saying, oh, the guy's being macho.
- 17:02I'm sorry, I'm being sexist again.
- 17:04But the young men are always showing off and saying, oh, I would be
- 17:08able to really race really fast.
- 17:10I always say to them, you can race really fast in a straight line,
- 17:13but what if you have to turn right?
- 17:15You know, like at Watkins Glen in the bus stop.
- 17:18So I don't use that terminology with them.
- 17:21It comes more naturally and flows when there's a bunch of kids around.
- 17:24Revving the engine.
- 17:26Talking about safety first.
- 17:27Put your seat belts on no matter what.
- 17:29At any point in the car, I get them to sign my helmet and pledge that they will
- 17:35in fact tell all of their friends and family members to put their seat belts on
- 17:39the second there, butt hits the seat, and sometimes I bring in Lori Johnson again.
- 17:44Somebody else I'm giving a shout out to.
- 17:47Laurie Johnson's of Lady Start Your Engines, does workshops and clinics
- 17:52and sometimes I let her take over and do the clinic, and she is wonderful.
- 17:57She's a mechanic.
- 17:58Right now I'm located in the Philadelphia area, and of course
- 18:02we went to Seabring in 2016.
- 18:05This is obviously something that should be offered.
- 18:08I don't care whether it's under the auspices of MORacing or just becomes
- 18:13part of the curriculum for middle school and lower education so that we
- 18:18can get some petrol heads developed.
- 18:20By age 10 if we need more of that.
- 18:22And not even just for, you know, no offense to the men out there, but there's
- 18:26a lot of guys that dunno how to change their own, uh, wheel or tire either.
- 18:30So, exactly.
- 18:31And that brings us to the male allies.
- 18:34Again, I have a personal story about that for the people who are
- 18:38behind the scenes of MORacing.
- 18:40My co-owner of the car is a coach and racer and.
- 18:44Without him, I would not be doing this.
- 18:46He and my pals that we do two-wheeled Tuesdays, which is we hang out in the
- 18:51garage and have beers and work on cars.
- 18:54And the personal side of the story is one of the guys that I hang out
- 18:59with actually had breast cancer.
- 19:01So how's that for non-traditional and stereotypes and breaking the biases?
- 19:06There you go.
- 19:06I have somebody on my team who does a lot of work on radio with me in such
- 19:11day of event who had breast cancer and survived, and it happened to be a male.
- 19:15It's rare, but it, it can happen, unfortunately.
- 19:18Yes.
- 19:19I mean, it sounds like you've been very fortunate with all the male allies
- 19:21as you've gone through this journey.
- 19:23Have you had the opposite?
- 19:25Because I've been doing HPD events for years now, and even
- 19:30before that in non-competitive go-karting events where you're just
- 19:33going to the, you know, indoor.
- 19:35Tracks for fun and, and unfortunately I've been the recipient of the not ally
- 19:40side of things where I had a guy on the go-kart track try to take me out.
- 19:44He t-boned me and his cart was about two inches from hitting my helmet.
- 19:48'cause that's how far he rode up.
- 19:49Out of anger that I was.
- 19:51Faster than him in a non-competitive event.
- 19:55Oh, and I've gotten, and that's something unfortunate.
- 19:57Fortunately, the male friends of mine and family members may or
- 20:02may not have spun him out later.
- 20:05All right.
- 20:06Payback is, you know what, in retaliation of having witnessed it, you know her hand.
- 20:11I'm sorry that happened to you.
- 20:13It's unfortunate, you know, and I, and I go to the track and I get the
- 20:16guys that are really excited when they see you and they're like, wow,
- 20:19you're changing your tires yourself.
- 20:21That's so cool.
- 20:22And they stare at you like they've seen, I don't know, some foreign
- 20:25animal they've never seen before.
- 20:27Or I've gotten to people that kind of laugh at me.
- 20:29You're going on the track in that.
- 20:31Really.
- 20:32And then after I've done a session, they, they come back up and they're
- 20:34like, wow, you're really fast out there.
- 20:37I'm like, thank you.
- 20:38Okay, good to me.
- 20:40That's great.
- 20:40Thank you for your bias.
- 20:42I mean, have you been lucky and been on the fortunate side of the
- 20:45allies or have you experienced some of the, the negative stereotyping?
- 20:49Well, you just reminded me of one of my favorite stories.
- 20:52I was at Summit Point.
- 20:53Changing out my own brake pads at the track and everybody wanted to help.
- 20:59And I said, absolutely not.
- 21:00I wanted to do this myself so that I know that I can do it.
- 21:04And I actually had one of my male allies stood there as I was working, turned
- 21:10people away who were offering their help.
- 21:12Hmm.
- 21:12Because I had it covered.
- 21:14If we're gonna name drop now, I'm gonna name drop.
- 21:18Don Cox was my instructor.
- 21:20At Pocono and Don Cox should mean something if you
- 21:23follow Penske Racing at all.
- 21:26He was the chief engineer for seven Indie wins and many, many, many other
- 21:31inventions and things like that.
- 21:33He was my instructor and has been my bow and pal and buddy, whatever you wanna
- 21:39call it, for the last almost 20 years.
- 21:42Do I ever get the sexist garbage of, where's your husband?
- 21:47Are your sons here?
- 21:49What are you doing here?
- 21:50Kind of thing.
- 21:51You ask if I had luck.
- 21:53I think I created my luck in that.
- 21:55I don't have any tolerance for being treated any differently, and
- 21:59my passion and dream is to someday have an all women's racing team.
- 22:03Have nobody know that it's an all women's racing team until everybody takes
- 22:08their helmets and gear off at the end.
- 22:10You know, flowing hair of whatever color.
- 22:13Preferably not blonde, but yes, us brunettes need our time in the light.
- 22:17Damn straight.
- 22:19So I have to ask this question.
- 22:21Because both of you have probably similar experiences, but on
- 22:25different ends of the pendulum swing.
- 22:27And what I mean by that is a couple of years ago, Tanya stepped out
- 22:31of doing DE and became a coach.
- 22:33And Maureen, you've been a coach for many, many years.
- 22:36What I mean by sharing in the experiences, probably being the only
- 22:39female coach in the room and then dealing with that come game day,
- 22:43you know, being in the right seat.
- 22:44So maybe you guys wanna discuss what that was like from both
- 22:47sides and compare swap stories.
- 22:50Well, let me clarify.
- 22:51This is particularly important that I am not an instructor.
- 22:55I loan out my car and I'm an advocate for women, and I'm well known as a pest,
- 23:01but I have never sat right seat because I thought that people were crazy to do that.
- 23:07Tanya, nothing against you, but I had two sons that I was bringing up.
- 23:12I always said, we are wearing helmets, we have the harnesses, and we're all
- 23:17going one direction, so we're safer.
- 23:19But I just never felt comfortable.
- 23:21I think I could have been an instructor, but I never went that route.
- 23:24I went more the route of running a car.
- 23:27We campaigned, like I mentioned, a couple cars and Porsche Club.
- 23:31So Tanya, tell me about your instructing.
- 23:34That's fantastic to me.
- 23:35Again, small percentage.
- 23:37It is small percentage.
- 23:38I'm honestly getting more accolades than I deserve 'cause I really
- 23:42haven't had a chance to do much.
- 23:44In terms of instructing, thanks to COVID, I was able to get out at a
- 23:47few events and then, you know, we all locked down and haven't done anything
- 23:51for a couple years, so maybe this year.
- 23:53Come out of hibernation even so, I mean, not even being a coach, just
- 23:58attending HPDE events, it's usually me, and maybe you see two other
- 24:03women in the paddock that aren't there supporting somebody else.
- 24:06They're actually getting in the car and and running.
- 24:09They say that you are the culmination of all of your previous instructors,
- 24:13especially in HPD, right?
- 24:14You everybody has a natural driving style for the street,
- 24:18but when you come to the track.
- 24:19You are this homologation to use a racing term of all of your
- 24:22instructors, good, bad, or indifferent.
- 24:24You've learned something from everybody to the point that you guys are making.
- 24:28It's very rare to see a woman in the classroom.
- 24:31They're teaching amongst the men, and I've had the privilege of having
- 24:34several female coaches over the years, and I've taken a lot more
- 24:37away from those coaches than I did.
- 24:39Even some of the men, one, especially Ms. Ellen Gutar.
- 24:43Thank her because her teaching style, especially when I was running with PCA
- 24:48many years ago, was so different that it opened my eyes up and I borrowed
- 24:52some of her techniques that I still use today when I'm teaching my students.
- 24:56It's different, but again, I have to give her a big shout.
- 24:59And I think Tanya too, there was a Canadian coach that she had running
- 25:03a Mustang convertible many years ago at an event we went to that
- 25:05you had an awesome experience with.
- 25:07Yeah.
- 25:07When you said that, I had to think, I was like, I haven't had very
- 25:09many women coaches, and now as I'm.
- 25:12Think back, I've had three in the early days when I was still
- 25:16being instructed and whatnot.
- 25:18Sounds like a lot, but it really isn't because they were basically each,
- 25:22the only woman there at that event and they partnered you up because
- 25:26you know, it's like, oh, you drive a front wheel drive, we're gonna
- 25:28put you in a front wheel drive car.
- 25:29There you go.
- 25:29Yeah.
- 25:30They were three different events, but basically, yeah, they were
- 25:33each the only woman instructor at.
- 25:35Any of those events in a sea of, I don't know, whatever, there'll
- 25:38be 20, 30 male instructors.
- 25:40So yeah, I mean, it's definitely a different perspective when
- 25:43you're in the seat with a female.
- 25:45I, I don't know, their style is just slightly different.
- 25:49You know nothing against the men and it's.
- 25:51I don't even know if it's necessarily, you just have a different understanding
- 25:55'cause you both are female.
- 25:56You, you know, in the back of your minds this is like a big deal that
- 25:59you're here both doing it together and you're in the sea of other men and
- 26:03it feels really good and empowering when you're passing, you know?
- 26:07Yes.
- 26:08The guys and their, you know, no offense, their Porsches and I'm
- 26:11in this low horsepower car, bye.
- 26:15And it's like you got that girl power moment going on that you don't quite
- 26:18get the same thrill or empowerment if there's a male instructor in the car.
- 26:22Not that it's not exciting to still pass people, but I'll flip that coin around
- 26:25and I'll openly admit, we men can be hyper aggressive sometimes, and I actually
- 26:30found that the female coaches that I had.
- 26:32You kind of check that at the door, and I will admit that they
- 26:35were actually more technical.
- 26:36As much as we pride ourselves as men is being super technical and knowing all
- 26:40about, you know, it's a 13 millimeter and you turn it to this torque spect,
- 26:43that's all just nerd Wikipedia stuff.
- 26:46But when it came down to the finesse part, the really technical aspects of driving
- 26:51it was more like learning how to dance.
- 26:53There was a rhythm to it, loved it.
- 26:54And there was just a different way of teaching that.
- 26:57Again, I've embraced that and I loved it, and it was one of
- 27:00those things that it was just.
- 27:01So refreshing and, and yet so rare at the same time, I hate to say with, I
- 27:05can get in cars with other guys, and I, I kind of know what I'm gonna get.
- 27:08It's written right on the packaging.
- 27:10I'm making a gross generality here, but every once in a while there's
- 27:13that bluebird that just appears and you're like, wow, that was amazing.
- 27:16I. Totally blew my mind.
- 27:18And those are the types of experiences that I've had over
- 27:20the years with female coaches.
- 27:22So again, I wanna encourage more women to step up and get out of intermediate group.
- 27:26You know, we do see women out there on the track and, and take the chance, get
- 27:30in the right seat and become a coach.
- 27:31I was gonna say, you've just.
- 27:33Talked about my mission at MORacing.
- 27:35In order to be an instructor, you have to be an advanced student
- 27:39and in order to be an instructor you could potentially be a racer.
- 27:43Hint, Tanya, you would be welcome anytime.
- 27:46Thank you.
- 27:46Come construct or guest drive my new used 9, 9 7.
- 27:51Seriously, that's an open invitation.
- 27:53You just gave me a flashback.
- 27:55I am in the reason Toter region, which is Philadelphia, greater
- 27:59area, and I think it means.
- 28:01Monster Slayer in German, recent to has a lot of female instructors, of which I
- 28:08really learned a lot, and you just gave me a flashback at Summit Point, her saying,
- 28:13come on, why are you lifting a little, you, you know, you've got this, you've
- 28:17got this, and you can pass these guys.
- 28:19They're not as good as you.
- 28:20And to have that voice in my head was incredible and so empowering.
- 28:26And then there were several.
- 28:28Women coaches, and I mentioned that Pippa mam, I had her come
- 28:31and instruct two female drivers.
- 28:34She jumped in with our chief instructor and he absolutely was in heaven
- 28:39because she can really instruct and I think she has the record for the
- 28:43fastest time in the 500 for a woman.
- 28:46Wow.
- 28:46So she was quite a instructor and coach.
- 28:49There's a lot of things you'll hear.
- 28:51They actually say that not to toot our horn, that women tend to actually be,
- 28:55you mentioned they're more technical giving the instructions, but they
- 28:59also, there's a lot of evidence that women can tend to be a little more
- 29:02technical in their driving style too.
- 29:05They're a little more consistent.
- 29:06They're a little more precise.
- 29:07They don't quite get that red mist as easily as the men folk do sometimes.
- 29:12And I remember.
- 29:12Many years ago, our father was very big into autocross, chair
- 29:17of autocross, and he set up the courses and, and did all that stuff.
- 29:21And he even did pro solos.
- 29:23He was competitive, you know, top of game and things like that.
- 29:26And he would host the driver's clinics.
- 29:28They were always at the beginning of the autocross season where
- 29:31you'd, you'd have, like for people who are unfamiliar, they'd set up.
- 29:34Little skid pads and slalom and late breaking and threshold, breaking miniature
- 29:39exercises, and you kind of go around to each of these stations all day long.
- 29:43You would practice the techniques and then it would culminate in an actual
- 29:46alto cross where they'd set up the big course and then you'd go do laps.
- 29:49And I participated in one of these, and this was.
- 29:51Very early in my general driving career, I don't even remember if I
- 29:56was licensed yet, or I, I might've had to have been to participate.
- 30:00I forget the name of the guy.
- 30:01He had the Green nine 14.
- 30:03One of my instructors for one of the, uh, Ken.
- 30:04Ken, not, yes, Ken.
- 30:07He, Ken.
- 30:07Ken is my instructor for some of the, the late breaking exercises, and I
- 30:10remember him telling me that I actually had an advantage over the men because.
- 30:15The way we depress the pedals on the balls of our feet versus not is
- 30:19something of an advantage to us as women.
- 30:21'cause of the, basically the shoes we wear and the way we're used to walking.
- 30:25And so we actually have a little more finessing control
- 30:28than than guys generally do.
- 30:30So that's kind of always stuck with me too and found it funny, the
- 30:33differences between men and women.
- 30:35But at the end of the day, the machines that perel us
- 30:38can make us all equally fast.
- 30:40Right.
- 30:40Love it.
- 30:42You're stealing all my lines.
- 30:45Sorry, Maureen.
- 30:45What can I do?
- 30:46Right.
- 30:47If you could change something about racing even on the local level to
- 30:52make it more inviting, especially to women, what is that thing that needs
- 30:56to change to just drop the wall down?
- 30:58Make it even easier.
- 30:59I know you're doing a lot of work, but as you assess all these organizations, if
- 31:03you could give them one recommendation, one piece of consulting to make it
- 31:06more inviting, what would that be?
- 31:08Make it into kind of like golf outings.
- 31:11Instead of having golf outings, we should have country clubs.
- 31:15At racetracks, you become a member for a nominal fee.
- 31:19Not some crazy country club fee come out on a Wednesday night or Tuesday night.
- 31:24Saturday or Sunday and you bring your family and they spectate
- 31:29or come along with you sons or daughters or whatever and drive.
- 31:33I would like to normalize it.
- 31:35That's what I would like to see happen.
- 31:37The more women there would be would be nice just to show that, you
- 31:41know, we belong there too, right?
- 31:43I mean it think it's stereotypes that get built from when we're young that
- 31:46the girl gets handed, the Barbie doll.
- 31:48The boy gets handed Matchbox car and the two shall not cross when who cares?
- 31:53Everybody can do or play with, you know what they want and there's nothing.
- 31:57They should hold women back from something like a car.
- 32:00We can all learn this stuff.
- 32:02So I think it's great.
- 32:03When you talked about the clinics of introducing that early on to
- 32:08young girls, or even if eventually young boys are in the program too.
- 32:12Yes.
- 32:12Um, but specifically, you know, young girls.
- 32:15So that they know that they don't need to be afraid of this stuff because
- 32:18it, in the long run, it's detrimental to women because as they get older
- 32:23and they haven't been exposed to this, they're taken advantage of.
- 32:25We know this.
- 32:27You bought your first car and you needed to go to the dealer, the auto body
- 32:29shop, or the auto repair shop and get your car worked on, and the guy sees
- 32:34the woman walking in and he ain't just.
- 32:36Sit back and he is ready for the ride.
- 32:39'cause he knows he is gonna sell blinker fluid, uh, Uhhuh,
- 32:42unfortunately to her or something.
- 32:46I love it.
- 32:46Right.
- 32:47And I love it.
- 32:47You know, I'm, I'm not trying to put our gender down.
- 32:51I mean, it happens to the men folk too.
- 32:52Let's be real.
- 32:53There's plenty that don't know a lug nut from the windshield
- 32:57wiper blade either, but.
- 32:58Seems to be forced or perpetuated on women a lot more.
- 33:03Maureen, in 2019, you left your job at Drexel Institute's, uh, women's health
- 33:08to become a mechanics apprentice.
- 33:10What led you to do that?
- 33:11What, what made you make that decision?
- 33:13I actually left the Institute for Women's Health and Leadership where I was the
- 33:17event specialist for 16 and a half years, loving my job every single day because
- 33:22of what I got to do, making a difference.
- 33:24In women's lives.
- 33:26I had this dream that I had reached my pinnacle there and wanted to
- 33:31start MORacing as a true initiative, and then had life events with my
- 33:36father being ill and then passing away, et cetera, real life things.
- 33:41Then COVID.
- 33:42It really started taking off and manifesting itself, so to speak.
- 33:47I knew that this was my passion and that I would certainly not have a
- 33:51lot more time in my life that I could resign from a job and pursue it.
- 33:55So again, my timing was a little off.
- 33:58With a pandemic starting now, I feel it's picking up again and
- 34:02it's going to come to fruition.
- 34:04What's the hardest thing about being a mechanic that is?
- 34:07The true physicality of it.
- 34:09I am no spring chicken.
- 34:11I just rotated tires this morning and I balanced tires and I did
- 34:15my own rear brakes on my BMW.
- 34:18I can do almost anything that I've been taught in the last year plus,
- 34:22but lifting is something that I find to be a challenge, but if I
- 34:27really want to, I use my tools.
- 34:29In other words, I can change out tires not high up on the
- 34:32lift, lower down, I can do it.
- 34:35It's just, I wish I had the rock.
- 34:38I wish I had his muscles and my brain power.
- 34:41I, I understand that part.
- 34:43I often am, uh, get foiled in my endeavors when I don't have enough strength to un
- 34:48loosen some bolt that I can't get off, and then it's like deflated and defeated.
- 34:53Can you come help me?
- 34:56They need your help too.
- 34:58Yeah.
- 34:59I'll bet you you've helped somebody else out.
- 35:01It's not that I didn't know what I was doing, it is just
- 35:03I need to go to the gym more.
- 35:05My answer to her usually is, do you have a longer cheater bar?
- 35:10And normally I don't.
- 35:11Trust me, I've thought of it.
- 35:14You had mentioned women walking into the dealer, et cetera.
- 35:17Also women being told that they need a new air filter.
- 35:20And a new battery being taken advantage of that they had a
- 35:23new air filter six weeks ago.
- 35:26Mm-hmm.
- 35:26So that price gouging, I love to teach to be aware of that and simple things
- 35:32like if you're going out in high heel shoes in your car, that you should have
- 35:36an old pair of sneakers in the trunk.
- 35:38To, to be realistic, I don't wear high heel shoes anymore.
- 35:41I'm old.
- 35:42So for those of you out there, male and female who wear high heel
- 35:45shoes, make sure you have some sneakers in the back of your car.
- 35:49There's nothing more exciting when you go to put the clutch in and your foot
- 35:52slides straight off because you've got no traction underneath that high heel shoe.
- 35:57Exactly.
- 35:59Exactly.
- 36:00You only gotta do that once.
- 36:01And you realize, yeah, look, flip flops in the car is a good idea barefoot.
- 36:06Sorry.
- 36:07But racing shoes are my preferred way to go all the time.
- 36:10I wear Pilates as my daily shoes, so it's all good.
- 36:13Well, I, I, I can't wear Pilates to work, you know, but that's, it's all good.
- 36:18Mine are pink, by the way.
- 36:19My daughter's bought them for me for Christmas, so I'm very proud of that fact.
- 36:22I love it.
- 36:23Love it.
- 36:23Maureen, let's dive a little deeper into some of the drivers you've worked with.
- 36:27You've name dropped Pippa man a few times.
- 36:30Is there anybody else of note that's working with you on the program or
- 36:33have you worked with on other programs as well that Menfolk might recognize?
- 36:38Menfolk would recognize?
- 36:40Don Cox because for the last 20 years we've been hanging out, so to speak.
- 36:45The amount of knowledge that he has imparted on me and the fact
- 36:49that these other drivers are like, do you realize how smart he is?
- 36:54Et cetera, et cetera.
- 36:55So.
- 36:55I actually have crewed for him where he actually has depended on me,
- 37:00and this is a former Penske chief engineer, so that's a lot of pressure.
- 37:05I could take any named race car driver and they're probably not as picky as he is.
- 37:10So names of race, car drivers know Pippa's, probably the most
- 37:14recognizable and Christina Lamb.
- 37:17Is a hell of a driver and she was down at Sebring and we entered
- 37:22A BMW into the Enduro race and they actually won in their class.
- 37:27Amy Dikes, Christina Lamb, you know Sue Bame, who is a banker and
- 37:32another person who is an attorney.
- 37:34And then I had somebody come out with their son, a mom and son.
- 37:38Team names are not big because I'm trying to really do this on the grassroots level.
- 37:44Those are the type of people I'm after.
- 37:46And then I'll pass whomever along to shift up now, or now you guys.
- 37:52So for the named drivers, there's not a lot other than Pippa.
- 37:56But a lot of potential good drivers.
- 37:58You have to start somewhere.
- 37:59The work you're trying to do is incredibly important because without
- 38:03the representation, it's critical for every gender or, you know, race or
- 38:08et cetera, is if you don't see others like you in that profession or in that
- 38:13area, in that whatever, then you have a hard time seeing yourself there.
- 38:18And so having that representation and getting people to realize it has
- 38:22nothing to do with gender or anything.
- 38:25It's just if you try and you apply yourself, you have the capability
- 38:29and capacity to do these things.
- 38:31Now, you might find that you don't like them, and that's perfectly
- 38:34fine, but don't limit yourself.
- 38:36To, oh, boys play with matchbox cars.
- 38:39So I couldn't possibly, so I think it's wonderful what you're doing.
- 38:42Keep, keep going.
- 38:43Well, we call that you have to see it to be it that if you just take it for granted
- 38:48that Lynn St. James was driving her pinto.
- 38:51Yes.
- 38:52She drove a Pinto and her famous story is she drove it into a
- 38:56lake or a pond or something.
- 38:57For real.
- 38:58If you can see these other women doing it, then you can be it.
- 39:02And I'm also not just women, I believe that any minority or unrepresented
- 39:08group should also be involved.
- 39:10So I am very excited when I see somebody of color, you know, either over the
- 39:15wall tire changer, I can't think of her name right now, but NASCAR Tire
- 39:20Changer and numerous other people.
- 39:22A good friend of mine is the safety steward for Reason Toter.
- 39:26She's out there in the pits telling everybody what the hell to do on grid.
- 39:30She is a powerhouse and her name is Svia Fernandez.
- 39:35Yeah.
- 39:35So in this vein of, you know, getting the representation out there and, and you
- 39:39know, having other young women or other women see women behind the pit wall or in
- 39:45the car, or either side of the pit wall, what obstacles are you facing and, and
- 39:50how are you overcoming them in regards to getting men on board and really, truly.
- 39:55Seeing these women that are changing the tires or helping read the
- 40:00data, having those guys see them as true peers and really taking them
- 40:05seriously, seeing somebody in action is the best way to get things done.
- 40:10So I am trained in motech data acquisition and I also, I dabble
- 40:15with AIM data acquisitions, getting guys to believe in me when I can
- 40:20say, here's where you are not.
- 40:22Full on the throttle.
- 40:23Here's where you are breaking early.
- 40:25Here's where you're breaking late.
- 40:26Here's your fuel consumption.
- 40:28Your whole suit is broken.
- 40:30It's 110 degrees.
- 40:31Now what are we gonna do about it?
- 40:34Et cetera, et cetera.
- 40:35All kinds of things that, again, action is the best example I think.
- 40:39Proof is in the pudding.
- 40:40Thank you.
- 40:41So that actually leads into another great conversation we've had many times before.
- 40:45There's this fallacy that you need a race car to go racing.
- 40:49So when you're talking to young ladies that might be interested in
- 40:52motor sport, how do you get them to overcome that and realize they can
- 40:56just show up with their daily driver?
- 40:57Well, that's exactly what I say is you can show up with your daily driver and in
- 41:01fact, that is a much better experience.
- 41:04What I find in the high performance driver's ed, is people showing up
- 41:07in twin turbos and crazy, crazy fast cars that they should not be driving.
- 41:12Yes, that's the mother in me.
- 41:14As novices that we learned with Momentum cars.
- 41:18Porsche Cup car is a beautiful race car and I was really lucky to be able to
- 41:23purchase that and drive it for a year.
- 41:25And my mentioned before my race car engineer had
- 41:29something to do with that car.
- 41:30He had modified it completely, so it was like a go-kart wrapped around me.
- 41:34Now I went to that extreme of the cup car.
- 41:37The other thing for daily drivers is I've taken and lent my BMW 3
- 41:4328 xxi to some women drivers and my son to do hooked on driving.
- 41:48I actually more enjoy a streetcar and learning how.
- 41:53It can perform to driving an all out race car because you have
- 41:57to start as a novice anyway.
- 41:59And so again, I would love to have a driving school.
- 42:02I was lucky enough to do Skip Barber, which they gave me buy one get one free
- 42:07because of their belief in my MORacing.
- 42:11There should be a MORacing school that brings your streetcar, have
- 42:15it teched, and go out and drive with instructors like Tanya.
- 42:19I mean, it's a very intimidating sport.
- 42:23A lot of people, you know, they find out, you know, I kind of do this, and
- 42:26they're not necessarily car enthusiasts at all, so they're unaware that these
- 42:29type of activities can even happen.
- 42:31And you know, they have that wow moment.
- 42:33It's like, really?
- 42:34Well, what do you drive?
- 42:35I'm like, well, I drive X, Y, Z, or I've driven X, Y, Z. And they're like, wow.
- 42:39And I'm like, you could take your Toyota Corolla if that's what you drive, or
- 42:43your Honda Civic, your Honda Accord.
- 42:45I've seen it.
- 42:46I was like, I told 'em, I've seen a Honda Accord out there playing Jane.
- 42:49And you know, that person wasn't passing the Porsches down the straits,
- 42:54but they were having a good time and they were learning something,
- 42:57and that's all that matters.
- 42:58So there's also that intimidation that people have that they
- 43:02think they can't get into it.
- 43:03When you're exactly right, just take your streetcar.
- 43:06All you gotta do is make sure you have some decent tires with some tread on them.
- 43:10You know, your brake pads and your fluids all fresh and go out there
- 43:13and you're not trying to be type of man and all, and all the, the great
- 43:18women that are out there right now.
- 43:19You can be that person.
- 43:21Also just in your regular car, just get out there and learn the basics
- 43:25and then, you know, if you find it's for you, you can step up to
- 43:29the cup car or you know, whatever.
- 43:31See where life takes you.
- 43:32Well, Tanya, you're gonna have to come and visit because I've been trying
- 43:36to get New Jersey Motorsport Park to have a Wednesday night open trap and
- 43:41have that exact same thing happen.
- 43:44Of course.
- 43:45I think the biggest obstacle there is good old insurance concerns about somebody
- 43:50getting hurt, et cetera, et cetera.
- 43:51To me, my dream would be instead of going golfing, you go on a weekend and you have
- 43:56open track for a half a day or a full day.
- 43:59It doesn't have to be for the whole weekend.
- 44:01I mean, sometimes it's exhausting in the summer.
- 44:03Yeah.
- 44:04It's it just go and have.
- 44:06Talk to me in a year or a year and a half and we'll be talking about that happening.
- 44:10Awesome.
- 44:11Some group out there was doing a women's track day.
- 44:13PCA down here has been advertising like so far all year that in October
- 44:17there's a women's only like HPD event.
- 44:20I think it's like.
- 44:21Mid late October, which I don't wanna discourage them from doing those
- 44:25things, but that to me kind of goes in the category of W race series.
- 44:30Right, exactly.
- 44:31Um, I want there to be blended so that women don't get treated any differently.
- 44:35Like in their regard.
- 44:37I could see it maybe as being attractive to at least pull them in at first.
- 44:41Maybe some women that are intimidated.
- 44:44So.
- 44:44Agreed.
- 44:45Agreed.
- 44:45Hopefully it could it be positive in that respect and then they start realizing and
- 44:49then coming out to the blended events.
- 44:51I completely agree.
- 44:52And so if a young lady walks up to you today, let's say, you know, round
- 44:57about 10 years old and asks you the question, Maureen, why do you race?
- 45:02What would you tell her?
- 45:03Because it's the slowest that I go in my life.
- 45:07I'm multitasking at all times doing various projects, being a
- 45:11mom, being a employee, being a mechanic, being all kinds of things.
- 45:16When I'm racing, I'm going so fast.
- 45:19That I cannot be managing thinking of I have to pick up the dry cleaning or
- 45:24I have to cook something, which by the way, I don't cook the going fast in a
- 45:29safe environment and the fact that you, whoever that person is, you can do it too.
- 45:34Maureen, as we wrap up here, are there any shoutouts promotions, upcoming events,
- 45:39or anything else you'd like to share?
- 45:40My goal is to make sure everybody know, even if I'm repeating myself.
- 45:45Everybody knows these fabulous things are going on.
- 45:47First off, I think you might have noticed that NASCAR was going to give $10 million
- 45:53through Bud Light as a sponsor for Women in Motorsport and Chip Nessi and PNC Bank
- 45:59just announced on International Women's Day, a Women in Motorsport campaign.
- 46:04They didn't give a dollar amount with it, but I'm sure it's significant.
- 46:07And I've had the pleasure of meeting Chip GSI and Roger Penske and Roger
- 46:11helped Beth Perreta out and Simone Destro as her driver at Indy 500.
- 46:17She, again, is stealing some of what I would like to do
- 46:20with the women race car team.
- 46:22But remember, I want them to be.
- 46:24Known as women after they win?
- 46:26Yes.
- 46:27No need to beforehand.
- 46:28Maureen, you actually bring up a really good point and because I want to talk
- 46:31about something that happened a while ago, you know, international Women's Day.
- 46:34We do a lot of social media posting and things like that, and I sat on it all
- 46:38day and sometimes there's events like that where I'm like, you know what?
- 46:40We're not gonna say anything.
- 46:41We're just gonna let it go.
- 46:42Moment of silence.
- 46:43But it took me all day because I just had these thoughts ruminating
- 46:46in my mind and I didn't know.
- 46:49Exactly what I wanted to say, and then it sort of hit me later in the day.
- 46:52I remember as a kid, and I've said this many times on this show, I
- 46:55always wanted to be a rally driver.
- 46:58I grew up in the group B era.
- 46:59It was one of those things that has stuck with me.
- 47:02It's what got me hooked on motorsports.
- 47:05Even though I know rally's not a big deal in the United States.
- 47:07It's, you know, very huge everywhere else.
- 47:09But here.
- 47:10And at that time as a kid, you know you're looking up to your idols, you know?
- 47:14Yeah.
- 47:15You had names like Volta Royal and Ola Ari Vain and people like that.
- 47:20But then there was Michelle Ton.
- 47:21When I posted on International Women's Day, I made it a point to be very
- 47:26direct about what I wanted to say and to highlight her because you see
- 47:30all this other stuff and I'm like looking back at the eighties and
- 47:33the late seventies, 'cause she ran for Renault and other teams as well.
- 47:36She was a pioneer.
- 47:38In motor sports as a female being out there.
- 47:40I mean, the other names that we listed, you know, there were a few
- 47:42that came before many that came after, but I looked at her going of all the
- 47:47motor sport that there is rally's one of the most difficult, requires
- 47:51some of the most just risk taking, but also finesse at the same time.
- 47:55And it is a ballet.
- 47:57And so I've always looked up to her as one of my motor sports heroes.
- 48:00And if you ask me to line up.
- 48:02Three, five people that I wanna shake their hand and meet them.
- 48:05Sabine Schmidt would've been one of them, and Michelle Zu right next to her.
- 48:08Right?
- 48:08So I wish there were more people like that, that want to be like her and
- 48:13do that and be rally drivers too.
- 48:15Uh, so I just wanted to bring that up because that hits close to home for me.
- 48:20I know it hits close to home for my family.
- 48:22And those are the kinds of stories I'm trying to pass down like yours
- 48:26to my daughters as they look to the future and, and go into driving
- 48:29and hopefully into motor sport.
- 48:31Or if not, if they want to take a ballet, that's fine too.
- 48:34But what we're doing is combining the two.
- 48:37Absolutely.
- 48:38Uh, the whole idea of dancing with a car is at a technical track like
- 48:43Shenandoah, which is a small track near summit on the same grounds.
- 48:47That's where one of my favorite instructors taught
- 48:50me how to dance with the car.
- 48:52That's exactly what he said.
- 48:53And how to apply the brakes to get more steering input, all kinds
- 48:58of technical stuff that I won't.
- 49:00Bore you with, I would invite everybody to visit MORacing.net.
- 49:06Leave your comments there.
- 49:07Email me, contact me, love to hear your feedback.
- 49:11Other than MORacing.net, I want to shout out to Vet Motorsports.
- 49:16I think you've had Pete on the show, Mary Hague of Moon Mark we
- 49:21had mentioned earlier, and again, that's Lori Johnson of Lady.
- 49:24Start Your Engines.
- 49:25Little plug there, commercial for her.
- 49:27Shout out to all the male allies out there.
- 49:30Again, without them I wouldn't be able to do it.
- 49:33And the Red Cross for any of those drivers out there, I am
- 49:37a transportation specialist.
- 49:40We pick up the blood and plasma and take it from the central lab out to
- 49:44hospitals, and some of it is stats.
- 49:47In other words, you can't be caught speeding, but you can certainly utilize
- 49:51the fact that you have a Red Cross van.
- 49:53So I pull it right into the front of the hospital, put my flashers on, and I'm able
- 49:59to take in the cases of blood platelets.
- 50:02So shout out to Red Cross and any other car enthusiasts that's out there.
- 50:08So stay tuned and if you have any suggestions, I'm open to them.
- 50:12Watch out for what we're doing because hopefully in a
- 50:15year or so it'll be standard.
- 50:17Get it standard manual.
- 50:20Save the manual.
- 50:22Yeah.
