- 0:08Speaker 1: Well, on a day that it's raining in Sydney, I'm
- 0:10Speaker 1: watching netball as Instagrams while they're in Spain and Italy
- 0:13Speaker 1: and Greece. Meanwhile, No Dribble is being held together with
- 0:16Speaker 1: Quadrill Coffee and Cheese Tasty sid this time off the out,
- 0:20Speaker 1: but you're a No Dribble. Hello and welcome to No Dribble,
- 0:35Speaker 1: the podcast where we talk.
- 0:36Speaker 2: About nebl we talk about so much.
- 0:38Speaker 3: What.
- 0:38Speaker 1: My name's Carolyn Swindell.
- 0:40Speaker 4: I'm lose Ellis and joining us today and I've got
- 0:44Speaker 4: a could real.
- 0:44Speaker 2: Sponsorship, so good. Thank you for joining us.
- 0:50Speaker 1: Catherine is on a plane with her mother toim New
- 0:52Speaker 1: Zealand this morning. Gordy, you are fresh off a plane.
- 0:56Speaker 1: Is above and beyond the call of dribbler duty.
- 0:59Speaker 2: Oh no, you know, dribbler duty is very very important.
- 1:02Speaker 2: And I am just off a plane. You had to
- 1:05Speaker 2: ring me to wake me up, which was good. So
- 1:07Speaker 2: I did sleep well last night, but I didn't get
- 1:08Speaker 2: into late last night. So and the jet lag will
- 1:11Speaker 2: hit in the next few days. I've got a feeling
- 1:13Speaker 2: but all good. Good to be back on oh good
- 1:16Speaker 2: to be back on home. So you know, when you
- 1:18Speaker 2: come back from a trip and you're well, you're kind
- 1:20Speaker 2: of like, oh god, you put your feet on Terra
- 1:22Speaker 2: Firma in Australia and just like, oh feels good. I
- 1:25Speaker 2: don't know why I did, but I just was so
- 1:27Speaker 2: grateful to be home. I think because I've been so
- 1:28Speaker 2: fo weeks. You were away, yeah, three weeks and sick
- 1:31Speaker 2: for half of it.
- 1:32Speaker 4: And still oh, Susan, I'm just glad you sobered up
- 1:35Speaker 4: from last week when we spent no.
- 1:37Speaker 2: Well, I don't think that happened. It didn't help, Liz.
- 1:40Speaker 2: It honestly didn't help. And it's funny because that you're
- 1:44Speaker 2: talking about the very last night that we went out
- 1:46Speaker 2: in It was the only night we had out, to
- 1:48Speaker 2: be honest with you, because Glasgow was hectic. But we
- 1:52Speaker 2: went out and Kat too Idy, who I was commentating,
- 1:55Speaker 2: We've had a four thirty am cab pickle Uber pick
- 1:59Speaker 2: up to go to Edinburgh Airport and there was a
- 2:03Speaker 2: point in time, you know, and that night where you go,
- 2:05Speaker 2: I've got to go home and she literally was half
- 2:08Speaker 2: a drink away from staying and going. And Nia Jones,
- 2:12Speaker 2: who was a commentator that was commentating over there with
- 2:14Speaker 2: TNT format Welsh player like you get next to Nia
- 2:17Speaker 2: and you're in all sorts, and she went to the
- 2:20Speaker 2: barna to get the drinks and Cat just did a
- 2:22Speaker 2: bolt out the door. Good on her, however, unfortunately I didn't.
- 2:26Speaker 2: And so that was you know, that just wasn't good night.
- 2:29Speaker 2: That was bad. And I've got a NUMBERT three am
- 2:31Speaker 2: and I was the first defense for Cat. Yeah, job correct.
- 2:34Speaker 2: So but then it was like a hangover of that
- 2:37Speaker 2: to the nextl today as well.
- 2:40Speaker 4: Here's here's a question for you then, just you know,
- 2:43Speaker 4: asking for a friend. Are you better off to get
- 2:46Speaker 4: onto a plane with the start of a hangover and
- 2:49Speaker 4: use the next twenty four hours just to get over
- 2:50Speaker 4: that hangover? Is that a good use of playing time?
- 2:52Speaker 4: Or should you keep yourself fresh so that you feel
- 2:55Speaker 4: all the pain of the twenty four hour plane journey
- 2:58Speaker 4: but you don't feel too bad at the end. Which
- 2:59Speaker 4: one's bad? Yeah?
- 3:01Speaker 2: I you know, for me, I got to hop on
- 3:04Speaker 2: a plane, not going out the night before. I cannot
- 3:07Speaker 2: do it, are able to? I can't anymore?
- 3:11Speaker 1: Getting on a plane with a hangover, Oh the worst thing,
- 3:16Speaker 1: the worst, the worst.
- 3:18Speaker 2: And then you know, the temperature controls in the plane,
- 3:21Speaker 2: you're never quite sure where they're going to Land and
- 3:22Speaker 2: then oh goes on or not? So no, not for me.
- 3:25Speaker 2: I need to be fresh and sober. So I was
- 3:28Speaker 2: lucky because I was staying on in England to do
- 3:30Speaker 2: some coaching, so I only had to hop on a
- 3:33Speaker 2: train I don't know, one o'clock the next uez. I've
- 3:35Speaker 2: done some train kilometers in the last seven days. Been crazy,
- 3:39Speaker 2: but yeah, anyhow, it was a good trip. I'm glad
- 3:42Speaker 2: to be home though, very happy.
- 3:44Speaker 4: Did you Did you get to catch any more other
- 3:45Speaker 4: sports where you were over there or was it just?
- 3:48Speaker 1: What?
- 3:48Speaker 2: No? And it's like it sounds so I can't believe
- 3:52Speaker 2: I did not see another sport the whole time, and
- 3:55Speaker 2: yet I was in I was in the precinct, you
- 3:58Speaker 2: know where every like a lot of the big sports,
- 4:00Speaker 2: and they only had to walk like across I don't know,
- 4:04Speaker 2: from one venue to the other venues to see it.
- 4:07Speaker 2: But oh god, we were so big. It was hectic.
- 4:10Speaker 2: It was a lot. It was a lot, and we
- 4:13Speaker 2: were a really small team covering a lot of nitball
- 4:15Speaker 2: and you would have like an hour and a half
- 4:17Speaker 2: break and all I wanted to do. I found like
- 4:20Speaker 2: a little quiet room inside the hydro and I would
- 4:23Speaker 2: just sneak in there and shut the door and kind
- 4:25Speaker 2: of try and close my eyes or prep for the
- 4:27Speaker 2: next game. And everyone sort of did that, so none
- 4:30Speaker 2: of us saw another sports. So sad, isn't it.
- 4:33Speaker 4: But sometimes that happens when you're in the middle of
- 4:35Speaker 4: it and you're working, and like.
- 4:37Speaker 2: I should go and see it. But your job.
- 4:38Speaker 4: You're actually there for the job. You're not there to
- 4:40Speaker 4: sight see, So you've got to actually do your job,
- 4:42Speaker 4: don't you.
- 4:42Speaker 2: Oh yeah, And in the first I think we were
- 4:44Speaker 2: talking about this before I went away, you know, like
- 4:45Speaker 2: in the first few days, I was looking at the
- 4:47Speaker 2: netball court and I'm like, who the hell's that? You know,
- 4:49Speaker 2: like some of these players that are coming through they're
- 4:52Speaker 2: new to the scene or you know, I'm trying to
- 4:54Speaker 2: understand which one is that. And then you can't be
- 4:57Speaker 2: our commentary box. I'm not sure we from the patres,
- 5:00Speaker 2: you wouldn't know, but we were quite far back from
- 5:03Speaker 2: the court, so again I could have used binoculars to actually, like,
- 5:07Speaker 2: you know, see the game. And so in the first
- 5:10Speaker 2: few days we were going mental in commentary, just trying
- 5:14Speaker 2: to know the player changes and so like if you
- 5:18Speaker 2: listened to the earlier days of commentary, anyone could listen
- 5:21Speaker 2: to us, Like I was very descriptive about a goal
- 5:23Speaker 2: attack until I realized what our actual name was, you know,
- 5:26Speaker 2: like oh that. You know, you just came up with
- 5:28Speaker 2: different ways to describe until you could go, this is
- 5:30Speaker 2: the player on the court.
- 5:31Speaker 1: So, ye, did you did every game, didn't you? Yeah?
- 5:35Speaker 2: We covered every game we got.
- 5:37Speaker 1: We got the feed from Kat and Kim Green, but
- 5:40Speaker 1: you still did that game.
- 5:41Speaker 2: For yeah, and then every other game. So on the
- 5:44Speaker 2: on the first day, this was brutal, right, Like for
- 5:46Speaker 2: day one, we were there at seven am in the
- 5:48Speaker 2: morning because we had to go thirty minutes earlier just
- 5:51Speaker 2: to I guess get our heads around a few bits
- 5:55Speaker 2: and pieces. We'd had a rehearsal day the day before,
- 5:57Speaker 2: but that was a bit like not a waste of time,
- 6:00Speaker 2: but they were still prepping the venue and like a
- 6:03Speaker 2: typical rares all day madness, And so we all got
- 6:06Speaker 2: there a little bit early on day one and we're
- 6:08Speaker 2: in a commentary box right next door to T and T,
- 6:11Speaker 2: who were another production happening that were covering the netball
- 6:15Speaker 2: and so we were in each other's spaces. So we're
- 6:18Speaker 2: trying to get a bit of a rhythm sitting next
- 6:20Speaker 2: to and all sharing the same space. A lot of
- 6:22Speaker 2: egos in one room, let me tell you. And then
- 6:26Speaker 2: like from seven am in the morning and then I
- 6:28Speaker 2: hopped in, I got in, got home and got into
- 6:30Speaker 2: bed at quarter past twelve that night. That was day one.
- 6:34Speaker 4: Oh god, you got no time, and.
- 6:37Speaker 2: I had prepped for the next day, so I still
- 6:39Speaker 2: had to get up and prep the next day. So
- 6:41Speaker 2: you know, you just you just savored every minute of
- 6:45Speaker 2: sleep that could.
- 6:46Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 6:47Speaker 4: Yeah, And when you're thinking about like having to learn
- 6:50Speaker 4: all those names, I don't having done a couple of
- 6:53Speaker 4: World Cups and Commonwealth Games. The hard thing is you
- 6:57Speaker 4: can do all the research you like, right and have
- 6:59Speaker 4: all the photos and the name and the description, but
- 7:02Speaker 4: the photos sort of they don't give you what you need, right.
- 7:06Speaker 4: You actually need to see these players. Thank going for
- 7:09Speaker 4: super Netbull to be able to introduce us to a
- 7:11Speaker 4: lot of these international players. But until you actually see
- 7:15Speaker 4: them and you know how tall they are, what they
- 7:17Speaker 4: start like that that helps you recognize the player on court,
- 7:19Speaker 4: because it's hard enough picking players sometimes who you do
- 7:22Speaker 4: know because from behind, everyone's got the high performance ponytail
- 7:25Speaker 4: here right, So like that's hard enough as it is,
- 7:28Speaker 4: but then when the first time you see them, there
- 7:30Speaker 4: is just nothing like actually seeing them on court. Like
- 7:34Speaker 4: I don't care how good the book that's I don't have.
- 7:36Speaker 4: Channel seven gave you the research. I mean, they employ
- 7:38Speaker 4: people ahead of these things that come up with all
- 7:41Speaker 4: these stats and they'll give you research. But also the
- 7:43Speaker 4: problem is sometimes players there's nothing about them online, so
- 7:48Speaker 4: you don't get a photo or you get real minimal
- 7:51Speaker 4: sort of information because there's not much about them from
- 7:54Speaker 4: their home league or whatever. So it's so difficult and
- 7:58Speaker 4: so like I know, people say, you know, when you're
- 8:02Speaker 4: a commentator, that's your job, and you do go and
- 8:04Speaker 4: try and learn all the pronunciation, but it's still like
- 8:07Speaker 4: when you think about it, a tennis commentator, they got
- 8:09Speaker 4: two players, one at each end. The ball is going
- 8:11Speaker 4: to go this person, then is going to go to
- 8:12Speaker 4: that person. In a race, you know, you can learn,
- 8:15Speaker 4: you know, you ten but in netball, like it's so
- 8:18Speaker 4: difficult because it's fourteen to start with, and then it
- 8:21Speaker 4: can become like twenty over the course of an hour.
- 8:24Speaker 4: I tell you who I loved seeing was Cat Tetley,
- 8:26Speaker 4: the coach of Scotland. So for anyone who doesn't know Cats,
- 8:29Speaker 4: she used to be the GM of the Swifts and
- 8:32Speaker 4: she was like the hype girl. You'd go to the
- 8:33Speaker 4: pre match sort of functions and she and she'd worked
- 8:36Speaker 4: for netballne New South Wales. She was there when I
- 8:38Speaker 4: was playing, so she's was there for a long time
- 8:41Speaker 4: and she left a couple of years ago to go
- 8:44Speaker 4: and coach Scotland. Catherine's not here, so I fear some
- 8:50Speaker 4: really bad accent. Yeah, And so I must admit I
- 8:55Speaker 4: knew her as a great sports administrator, but I did
- 8:58Speaker 4: not know that she could coach. And so she's gone
- 9:00Speaker 4: to Scotland and done a remarkable job.
- 9:03Speaker 2: Often, Cat Tetley was honestly the heart and soul of
- 9:10Speaker 2: the netball program there because of the way that she
- 9:14Speaker 2: allowed the team to embrace the opportunity, share it with
- 9:19Speaker 2: the crowd and try and hand a legacy over to
- 9:24Speaker 2: young fans, Scottish fans in the crowd. And it was
- 9:28Speaker 2: at the heartened soul of every interview she gave or
- 9:31Speaker 2: any of the Scottish players gave, so you knew that
- 9:33Speaker 2: it was something they had fundamentally spoken about. And to
- 9:37Speaker 2: watch her stand there and sing the national anthem. She
- 9:40Speaker 2: has Scottish heritage through her grandfather, I think it is.
- 9:43Speaker 2: And to watch her sing the national anthem with the
- 9:45Speaker 2: team and then oh, when they got close to Jamaica,
- 9:50Speaker 2: I think it was Jamaica. It was at Jamaica in
- 9:51Speaker 2: one of the games. Yeah, and I think they lost
- 9:53Speaker 2: by two forty five forty three. And then just singing
- 9:57Speaker 2: right at the very end of their tournament, even though
- 10:00Speaker 2: I did have the best game on their playoff results,
- 10:02Speaker 2: they got their best ever result and everything everyone was
- 10:05Speaker 2: sort of moving, and Scottish players walked out onto the
- 10:08Speaker 2: middle of the cord and wrapped the flags around them
- 10:12Speaker 2: and they spang the Scottish and oh, oh my god,
- 10:16Speaker 2: I love thee Yeah, and the whole stadium just stopped,
- 10:23Speaker 2: like you stopped, no matter where you were in the
- 10:24Speaker 2: stadium to watch and listen. And they're all crying, and oh,
- 10:29Speaker 2: they're the stories that you know, we can all be
- 10:31Speaker 2: upset about Australia not beating Jamaica and then getting a bronze,
- 10:35Speaker 2: but I kind of go, well, you know, that's it
- 10:36Speaker 2: is what is. But I come back to all of
- 10:38Speaker 2: the beautiful stories that don't necessarily get seen you know,
- 10:44Speaker 2: I guess or translated as well as they should, because
- 10:46Speaker 2: for me they're the games, that was the games.
- 10:48Speaker 1: I'm so relieved that Glasgow were able to step in
- 10:52Speaker 1: and run a version of these games. I know it's
- 10:54Speaker 1: not the whole bells and whistles that it was going
- 10:56Speaker 1: to be in Victoria, but it would have just been
- 10:59Speaker 1: tragic for this not to have a cur And I
- 11:02Speaker 1: did get to see a number of other sports and
- 11:03Speaker 1: one of my favorite images is watching rose Babies win.
- 11:07Speaker 1: And now I think it was the five thousand meters.
- 11:11Speaker 1: That's not a drive. You have to run that far
- 11:13Speaker 1: apparently very fast, and Jess Hull, the other Australian, came
- 11:17Speaker 1: in just behind her and the two biggest smiles. And
- 11:22Speaker 1: Jess Hull is not like, she's not your stereotypical disappointed
- 11:25Speaker 1: I've come second. She is so happy that they are
- 11:28Speaker 1: there together and it's just such a joyful moment. And
- 11:32Speaker 1: these events were just extraordinary across so many different sports.
- 11:37Speaker 1: Absolutely loved it.
- 11:38Speaker 2: A lot of people. Funnily enough, you say that, Carolyne,
- 11:41Speaker 2: A lot of people that you spoke to throughout the
- 11:45Speaker 2: games in the streets or whatever, and they didn't have
- 11:48Speaker 2: to necessarily be netball people because we had to walk
- 11:51Speaker 2: around with our pass on every we were told to
- 11:54Speaker 2: kind of do that. Just make sure that we would
- 11:56Speaker 2: do that anyway, just so.
- 11:58Speaker 4: You would, Carolyn, you'd be back in Sydney still wearing
- 12:04Speaker 4: it for a.
- 12:05Speaker 2: Couple of months, that's right, you'd have it on today.
- 12:08Speaker 2: But a lot of people would just chat to you
- 12:10Speaker 2: in the street or whatever on the train, and they're
- 12:12Speaker 2: all so grateful that the games were on, like and
- 12:16Speaker 2: how sad it would be if if nothing were picked
- 12:19Speaker 2: up afterwards. And then there was also was it the
- 12:23Speaker 2: athletes Petriered Thomas, the former swimmer, was she yeah, choose
- 12:27Speaker 2: as Yeah. Her last interview at the games was really
- 12:33Speaker 2: emotional when she got she was just talking about what
- 12:35Speaker 2: had fantastic games it had been blah blah blah, this
- 12:38Speaker 2: that and the rest of it. And then right at
- 12:39Speaker 2: the end when she said and to think that this
- 12:43Speaker 2: might not have happened, and she just bursts into tears.
- 12:45Speaker 2: So you can see just across so many people, Like
- 12:49Speaker 2: a lot of people were talking about, oh, it's just
- 12:51Speaker 2: a nightmare. It doesn't mean anything anymore. I'm telling you.
- 12:54Speaker 2: If you're on the ground, it means a shitload. I'm
- 12:56Speaker 2: telling you that, Like, it means a lot to a
- 12:59Speaker 2: lot of people, and it might be only the Commonwealth countries,
- 13:02Speaker 2: but that's important. And you could tell by the people
- 13:05Speaker 2: that were there the way they loved it, the way
- 13:07Speaker 2: they still cherished winning medals or coming seventh because they
- 13:11Speaker 2: beat a country they'd never beaten before, Like all those
- 13:14Speaker 2: things are still so valuable. And to watch the smiles
- 13:17Speaker 2: on the faces of people in Glasgow when the weather
- 13:20Speaker 2: was shit the whole time, it didn't make any difference,
- 13:23Speaker 2: Like people just loved it. So you know, like I
- 13:28Speaker 2: went away going is this the last one? I desperately
- 13:30Speaker 2: don't think it will be, or hope it won't be,
- 13:32Speaker 2: because it's just important in a world that has a
- 13:36Speaker 2: lot of crap going on, it's important.
- 13:38Speaker 1: That whole argument about it just being Commonwealth nation, it's
- 13:41Speaker 1: such an absurd argument, because the whole point of the
- 13:44Speaker 1: Olympics is it's the only one that everyone goes to.
- 13:48Speaker 1: The world is littered with these regional competitions, so like
- 13:51Speaker 1: there's the Asian Football Cup that the Matilda's played in,
- 13:55Speaker 1: like no one goes. Oh, it doesn't count because it's
- 13:57Speaker 1: not the Women's World Cup.
- 13:59Speaker 2: Or whatever.
- 14:00Speaker 1: This is how sport works. So it is, it's very important,
- 14:03Speaker 1: and it's and the whole all sports are based around
- 14:07Speaker 1: these these things that lead up to the pinnacle of
- 14:10Speaker 1: whatever their sport is. So that sort of I just
- 14:13Speaker 1: I don't understand that logic of dismissing the Commonwealth Games
- 14:16Speaker 1: by saying, oh, well America is not there, so well,
- 14:19Speaker 1: you know, good.
- 14:20Speaker 2: Yeah, and I think I mean for Aussie's because we
- 14:22Speaker 2: do so well there, but potentially we struggle to get
- 14:24Speaker 2: medals at Olympics. We almost become like I've heard a
- 14:27Speaker 2: lot of Aussies make comments of ours, you know, like
- 14:29Speaker 2: we're going to win everything. Well good, so we should
- 14:32Speaker 2: like you know, a friend of money for bloody Commonwealth
- 14:35Speaker 2: and we end up on the top of the table.
- 14:36Speaker 2: We should be celebrating it, not yea like tap poms syndrome, right,
- 14:40Speaker 2: So yeah, make the most of it. And again, you know,
- 14:43Speaker 2: an athlete that trained for the Commonwealth Games trained as
- 14:45Speaker 2: hard as they would for the Olympic Games. It's no different.
- 14:47Speaker 2: It means that you know, it's important, So.
- 14:51Speaker 1: Mind you, I would be I'm reasonably at peace if
- 14:55Speaker 1: Netball USA wants to keep this build that they are
- 14:57Speaker 1: obviously building momentum on if they to get so big
- 15:01Speaker 1: that they take the Olympic gold in twenty thirty two,
- 15:03Speaker 1: I'm actually okay with that. Let's just get the damn
- 15:06Speaker 1: game across the whole world and get some different get
- 15:09Speaker 1: as many different countries participating as we possibly can. I
- 15:13Speaker 1: say that'd be really nice to hold the Olympics and
- 15:15Speaker 1: get the gold medal as well. But I love this
- 15:18Speaker 1: idea that you know we've got. Now, if the US
- 15:21Speaker 1: can come in and bring some of the US scale
- 15:23Speaker 1: and money to.
- 15:23Speaker 2: Our game, great right here the grimoor Now.
- 15:29Speaker 1: We can't keep talking about your little working holiday in Glasgow.
- 15:34Speaker 1: There isn't happening here.
- 15:38Speaker 2: Quite healthy.
- 15:40Speaker 1: You know we very much. I can't believe you've backed
- 15:43Speaker 1: up for us today, Gorda, You're a bloody legend. But
- 15:45Speaker 1: we're going to take a little.
- 15:46Speaker 3: Break and come back and we'll have our actual netball segments. Okay.
- 16:01Speaker 1: So, as you know, we record on a Monday. By
- 16:03Speaker 1: the time this goes to air on Wednesday, who knows
- 16:06Speaker 1: what official announcements will have been made. But there are
- 16:09Speaker 1: rumors flying everywhere about what is happening in super netbul
- 16:13Speaker 1: In twenty twenty seven, and I am loving this. This
- 16:17Speaker 1: is the greatest anticipation. It's like waiting for season three
- 16:21Speaker 1: of the Summer I Turned Pretty, which I also hated
- 16:24Speaker 1: but loved in the same way. But it's like, I
- 16:26Speaker 1: need to know what's happening here, Who's going to team Conrad,
- 16:30Speaker 1: who's going to team Jeremiah? And we have Susan Gordian
- 16:33Speaker 1: here to discuss today, So that's exciting. Can we start
- 16:37Speaker 1: with the biggie? The biggest one I have heard in
- 16:40Speaker 1: the past week is obviously from your neck of the woods.
- 16:43Speaker 1: Is jess anstys M.
- 16:45Speaker 2: Yeah, jess Yeah, So you read social media, we're the
- 16:49Speaker 2: worst club in the world, which is there? So like
- 16:52Speaker 2: you know what, bloody sad and I can tell you
- 16:55Speaker 2: bloody tough, and the decisions that you have to make
- 17:00Speaker 2: as a club are difficult, and you know, like again
- 17:03Speaker 2: you try not to I try not to read a
- 17:05Speaker 2: lot of the posts, but you want to get a
- 17:07Speaker 2: sense from your fans and the fans like, I mean,
- 17:09Speaker 2: they're split, but the fans are disappointed, and so they
- 17:12Speaker 2: should be because you know, you can easily gravitate and
- 17:15Speaker 2: love people and she's been a great captain, a wa
- 17:18Speaker 2: kid coming through et cetera, et cetera. But you know,
- 17:22Speaker 2: we were always going to be in a really difficult
- 17:24Speaker 2: predicament because you know, we're going to have the return
- 17:27Speaker 2: of Sunday Ariyang from ACL and had someday have not
- 17:32Speaker 2: done her injury, we would have been we would have
- 17:35Speaker 2: been in this season what is it, twenty twenty six
- 17:38Speaker 2: season just gone probably a little bit defensively lopsided, and
- 17:42Speaker 2: so something was going to have to give, and so
- 17:44Speaker 2: we had to look at future plans, and we had
- 17:47Speaker 2: to look at I guess the balance of the list,
- 17:50Speaker 2: and also I guess SPAWM and data, so you don't
- 17:55Speaker 2: just make a decision on one thing. But that was
- 17:57Speaker 2: sort of it. So a bit disappointing to read the
- 18:00Speaker 2: in the paper that well across different comments that maybe
- 18:03Speaker 2: Jess felt she wasn't informed or didn't realize. I think
- 18:07Speaker 2: there'd been enough conversations warranted that her and her management
- 18:11Speaker 2: would have been aware. So don't believe everything you read everyone,
- 18:14Speaker 2: but it is it's really difficult, and you know, in
- 18:17Speaker 2: any given circumstances and this this, and I used Jess
- 18:20Speaker 2: as an example, but in the coming days and weeks,
- 18:25Speaker 2: you're going to be reading a lot of Jess ancest stories,
- 18:27Speaker 2: let me tell you. And it's not to say that
- 18:30Speaker 2: Jess may not turn up at another club or be
- 18:32Speaker 2: capable of still playing at that level. So who knows
- 18:35Speaker 2: what will happen.
- 18:36Speaker 1: Well, look at Maddy Hay last year. She didn't have
- 18:38Speaker 1: a contract, did she? And then was it Molly Jovid
- 18:40Speaker 1: got pregnant and then Maddi Hay was given a contract
- 18:44Speaker 1: with the MAVs, had a blinder of a season. She's
- 18:46Speaker 1: retired again now, so we'll see whether that that sticks.
- 18:50Speaker 1: You know, we know from Ramelda, Ake and George that
- 18:52Speaker 1: not every retirement is an actual retirement.
- 18:56Speaker 2: I mean, it's so you know, the Jess, the Gess one,
- 19:00Speaker 2: the just one's tough, but you know, don't forget that
- 19:04Speaker 2: the people that are employed and sitting chairs, we have
- 19:07Speaker 2: to make tough decisions. And as much as she I mean,
- 19:12Speaker 2: you take the name captain away and maybe everyone doesn't
- 19:15Speaker 2: get as upset about it, but you add the word
- 19:17Speaker 2: captain to it, and it seems like you know, you're
- 19:20Speaker 2: not allowed to let go of your captain. Tough decision,
- 19:22Speaker 2: great person and hopefully will still remain a good part
- 19:26Speaker 2: of the club in different ways. Et cetera, et cetera.
- 19:28Speaker 2: But what I can say though, is there are a
- 19:30Speaker 2: lot of there's a lot of movement to come, like
- 19:34Speaker 2: a lot and I'm probably saying more than I've ever
- 19:37Speaker 2: known in the last six or seven years.
- 19:39Speaker 4: Yep, You've got to Curtis, ask you about someone like
- 19:42Speaker 4: Jess Right, some of the stuff that I read and like,
- 19:46Speaker 4: it's hard when you're an administrator to read stuff. But
- 19:48Speaker 4: also you look at that and you go, I love
- 19:50Speaker 4: that she so loved. I love that she's so respected
- 19:52Speaker 4: and so revered and people are upset for her. I
- 19:55Speaker 4: think that, and it's fabulous. I think it's great for
- 19:57Speaker 4: her to see the outpouring of support her and love
- 20:01Speaker 4: for her. So, but is there a way like, as
- 20:05Speaker 4: you obviously as a club you're thinking about the future,
- 20:09Speaker 4: when do you start thinking about the future. Because one
- 20:11Speaker 4: of the things that I saw people were like, how
- 20:13Speaker 4: do we celebrate her? And I think Catherine and Carolyn
- 20:16Speaker 4: ask the same thing, and you Gordy about Briani, like
- 20:19Speaker 4: how do you balance that up as a club, the
- 20:21Speaker 4: need for champions to be celebrated versus the need to
- 20:25Speaker 4: actually go through your processes and do all the analysis
- 20:28Speaker 4: you need to do and make the decision.
- 20:30Speaker 1: So can I just add one thing to this, Gordy
- 20:32Speaker 1: when you're responding to this, I know there were people
- 20:34Speaker 1: criticizing West Coast Fever saying, well, why are writing this
- 20:38Speaker 1: beautiful post about her and now you've sacked her? And
- 20:41Speaker 1: I think that is you know, that's that's really tough. Personally.
- 20:44Speaker 1: I don't find it difficult to understand that the club
- 20:47Speaker 1: can acknowledge her and say we appreciate her and honestly
- 20:51Speaker 1: we wish life was different. We could have twenty players
- 20:53Speaker 1: and we would keep her. But I know there was
- 20:56Speaker 1: that question of well is it appropriate for West Coast
- 20:58Speaker 1: Fever to be making these celeibras posts.
- 21:01Speaker 2: So I will be as honest and truthful as I
- 21:05Speaker 2: can in the way I respond to this. So no
- 21:08Speaker 2: one circumstances is the same as the next list in
- 21:12Speaker 2: It would be nice to think that there's a like
- 21:15Speaker 2: a process that you could follow knowing, you know, with
- 21:18Speaker 2: a coach or play when they depart. But if you
- 21:20Speaker 2: look at the circumstances of West Coast Beagle, which is
- 21:23Speaker 2: a team that has played in the finals more like
- 21:27Speaker 2: we're in consecutive finals more than any other list. So
- 21:31Speaker 2: the kind of decisions. We're making a really tough Two
- 21:33Speaker 2: years ago, Jess played in a team where we lost
- 21:35Speaker 2: the Grand final buy a goal. This year we played
- 21:38Speaker 2: in a preliminary final. So you're kind of going like,
- 21:42Speaker 2: we've got a good list, you know, like everything sort
- 21:44Speaker 2: of on track. Are we just a couple of bad
- 21:48Speaker 2: passes or or one percent in shooting accuracy away from
- 21:51Speaker 2: winning a premiership? Is this the team that can do that?
- 21:54Speaker 2: So you're begging the question of that from round one
- 21:57Speaker 2: when you know that your list is likely to put
- 22:00Speaker 2: you in finals right through. But then as you're tracking,
- 22:04Speaker 2: you're always watching form lines of players. We've got data
- 22:07Speaker 2: that allows us to compare every player in the league
- 22:10Speaker 2: against each other and against themselves, so you can watch
- 22:14Speaker 2: trends of a player going up going down. You can
- 22:17Speaker 2: also trend a player against the teams that you know
- 22:20Speaker 2: you will have to beat in a finals campaign to
- 22:23Speaker 2: see whether or not they impact or they don't, And
- 22:25Speaker 2: different players do them, different players don't. So when you're
- 22:28Speaker 2: taking in all that information and you're tracking it on
- 22:30Speaker 2: a week by week basis, and you get to the
- 22:33Speaker 2: point you're about the halfway mark of the season and
- 22:35Speaker 2: you have a review as we do as a club,
- 22:38Speaker 2: and you're starting to shape some decisions there, but you
- 22:41Speaker 2: do everything you can to give every single athlete the
- 22:44Speaker 2: best opportunity because the difference between playing in round one
- 22:48Speaker 2: to round fourteen versus being a finals player are two
- 22:53Speaker 2: completely different things. So what you want to do is
- 22:55Speaker 2: give every player the chance to be the best version
- 22:59Speaker 2: of themselves, to perform under pressure and finals. And then
- 23:02Speaker 2: you're still weighing up all that other information. So and
- 23:06Speaker 2: this isn't just a jeft situation, is this is every athlete.
- 23:09Speaker 2: But the most difficult part is if you're starting to
- 23:11Speaker 2: shape a decision, at what point can you sit down
- 23:14Speaker 2: with the player and say, oh, look, you know it's
- 23:18Speaker 2: unlikely that you're going to be contracted next year. The
- 23:21Speaker 2: player then potentially drops off and you're going into finans.
- 23:25Speaker 2: It's a tough conversation to have, and it would have
- 23:27Speaker 2: been the same with Briany. Oh Briani, you know we're
- 23:30Speaker 2: going to tell you this year if by chance and
- 23:32Speaker 2: but Swifts are going in the finals. I know that
- 23:34Speaker 2: wasn't the case. But this is the thing that you've
- 23:37Speaker 2: got a wayh up, and so all you can do
- 23:39Speaker 2: is be honest with your athletes and your staff as
- 23:43Speaker 2: you go along, and I would imagine no club would
- 23:47Speaker 2: be any different in the fact that they all have
- 23:49Speaker 2: their individual athlete program plans where athletes know what it
- 23:52Speaker 2: is they're trying to achieve, and that's coaching staff and
- 23:56Speaker 2: meeting with those athletes on an individual basis X number
- 23:59Speaker 2: of times year, reflecting back on that information and that data,
- 24:03Speaker 2: and making sure they're very, very aware of where they're tracking.
- 24:06Speaker 2: And then ideally, you know, you try and have the
- 24:09Speaker 2: conversation at the most appropriate time, and for us, that
- 24:13Speaker 2: was as soon as the preliminary final was over. But
- 24:17Speaker 2: prior to that with Jess, there was enough information there
- 24:21Speaker 2: that would have allowed her to know that there were
- 24:24Speaker 2: no guarantees of her remaining with West Coast Fever moving forward,
- 24:29Speaker 2: but we had not finalized that decision. And as soon
- 24:32Speaker 2: as the preliminary final was over and we were in
- 24:35Speaker 2: a position to make the necessary decisions, then we made
- 24:39Speaker 2: them and then we informed it. Yeah, that's great, I mean,
- 24:43Speaker 2: and that's what can you do? Like that's it's tough
- 24:46Speaker 2: everyone going on about her playing one hundred and forty
- 24:48Speaker 2: nine games. We're not in the business of allowing a
- 24:51Speaker 2: player to stay on for a year so they can
- 24:53Speaker 2: hit their one fifty. As nice as that would have been,
- 24:55Speaker 2: it's not in the job specs. And if you sit
- 24:58Speaker 2: in the seat of a list management team and those
- 25:01Speaker 2: having to make tough decisions, that's not the information you
- 25:05Speaker 2: share on the table. That's so I'd be.
- 25:07Speaker 1: Right in assuming that the club will would prefer to
- 25:12Speaker 1: keep the players or if that's the best I can't
- 25:15Speaker 1: see Tanya Obs is going to be going shit. I
- 25:17Speaker 1: need to make wholesale changes here. Like if I'm Tanya Obs,
- 25:20Speaker 1: I'm going I want to try to lock everyone down.
- 25:22Speaker 1: So you're always going to start with the presumption we
- 25:24Speaker 1: would much rather keep our existing players for if that's
- 25:29Speaker 1: the best option on court, I would assume no. And
- 25:32Speaker 1: so you know, I've seen this a number of times
- 25:34Speaker 1: on the dribble. Stability is really important. Stability gives you
- 25:38Speaker 1: success and that's something that you know, I can personally
- 25:40Speaker 1: tell you at Fever. If you look at our list historically,
- 25:43Speaker 1: we've had very very good stability.
- 25:44Speaker 2: So stability is important, and you don't you try to
- 25:48Speaker 2: spend time building you know, I guess like longevity into
- 25:52Speaker 2: your list, and so every time you're making a decision
- 25:56Speaker 2: either to release or a player chooses to leave. And
- 25:58Speaker 2: let's be honest, it's the same which player chooses to leave.
- 26:01Speaker 2: It's as tough on them to have to turn around
- 26:03Speaker 2: to a club and go I'm leaving as it is
- 26:05Speaker 2: for the club to say to a player no longer.
- 26:09Speaker 2: So it's a really difficult it's a really difficult scenario.
- 26:12Speaker 2: So you know, again, if we had a list of twelve,
- 26:15Speaker 2: I think you know, we'd be holding jets because she
- 26:17Speaker 2: brings there are a lot of parts of jests that
- 26:21Speaker 2: we would love to hold on to. There's no two
- 26:23Speaker 2: ways about it. It's just not the case that we've
- 26:25Speaker 2: been able to do that. We only have a list
- 26:26Speaker 2: of ten, and the eleventh player still has rules that
- 26:30Speaker 2: sit around it that limit us. And again I'll say
- 26:33Speaker 2: this year, those rules that sit on the eleventh player
- 26:36Speaker 2: make it very difficult for clubs because those rules limit
- 26:41Speaker 2: you to what you can and can't do. So, you know,
- 26:43Speaker 2: jess Answers would likely be playing for Fever if the
- 26:46Speaker 2: eleventh player position had different rules around it, but it doesn't,
- 26:48Speaker 2: so you know, the circumstances are just that, but you
- 26:51Speaker 2: know those.
- 26:52Speaker 1: Rules are so the eleventh player has to be somewhat
- 26:54Speaker 1: early career.
- 26:55Speaker 2: I think right, twenty six under I can't remember, hasn't
- 26:59Speaker 2: played more and hasn't had like a five game contract
- 27:02Speaker 2: or something like that. Twenty six under hasn't played more
- 27:05Speaker 2: than five games, returning from injury or pregnancy, and able
- 27:09Speaker 2: to play for Australia. Yeah, so that's quite a lot
- 27:12Speaker 2: of Yeah. Well, I just I don't have a problem
- 27:15Speaker 2: with able to play for Australia. That I like that.
- 27:18Speaker 2: But the rest of it is basically saying to the
- 27:20Speaker 2: clubs that you know, let's say, for example, your list
- 27:24Speaker 2: is already fundamentally twenty six and under, then you're telling
- 27:27Speaker 2: me and go and take another twenty six and under athlete. Like,
- 27:30Speaker 2: it's assuming that those rules other than play for Australia,
- 27:35Speaker 2: which you know, I think, given the current state of
- 27:38Speaker 2: imports in the game, is a really good thing for
- 27:41Speaker 2: us to hold on to until we can either increase
- 27:43Speaker 2: number of teams or increase less sizes. But you're assuming
- 27:46Speaker 2: that by stating at twenty six under that it equates
- 27:49Speaker 2: to something. What does it equate to? I don't understand
- 27:51Speaker 2: what it equates to. You know, this should be built accordingly.
- 27:55Speaker 2: Just tell me if they've got to play for Australia,
- 27:57Speaker 2: so be it. I'll make sure that within the list
- 27:59Speaker 2: there is someone that can play for Australia. Like it
- 28:03Speaker 2: just for me, it's never made sense from the day
- 28:05Speaker 2: Dot We've fought it as a club, but it's still
- 28:07Speaker 2: Lands so but anyhow, that's it. What I was going
- 28:11Speaker 2: to say though, is just to to to say before
- 28:14Speaker 2: about Liz. When you ask the question, just keep in
- 28:17Speaker 2: mind over the coming period, Druble is when you start
- 28:19Speaker 2: hearing the news of people moving and whatnot, Like there
- 28:23Speaker 2: is so much that the fans don't see that happens
- 28:27Speaker 2: behind the scenes, and like the training environment is really
- 28:32Speaker 2: significant information that clubs have to take into consideration around
- 28:38Speaker 2: list management as well. It's not just game day, so
- 28:41Speaker 2: you're looking at the ability of player to maintain standards
- 28:43Speaker 2: over a period of time, et cetera, et cetera, et cetera.
- 28:46Speaker 2: So there's a lot of that and I know I'm
- 28:48Speaker 2: very aware of a lot of movement, not I'm not
- 28:51Speaker 2: saying from happening from other clubs. It's going to make
- 28:54Speaker 2: it's going to make fans get really upset and angry,
- 28:56Speaker 2: and that's great too, But just just be mindful that
- 29:00Speaker 2: it's impossible to share every bit of information with everyone
- 29:04Speaker 2: because you just if I've shared some of the stuff
- 29:06Speaker 2: with people out there, they wouldn't understand it because it
- 29:08Speaker 2: doesn't it's not their world, or it's not it's your expertise. Yeah,
- 29:12Speaker 2: you know, it's not their expertise. So it's really difficult
- 29:14Speaker 2: to paint as good a picture as you can. But
- 29:16Speaker 2: I guess what we tried to do at FEVER was
- 29:18Speaker 2: paint the picture for jes to say, yeah, you're a
- 29:21Speaker 2: legend mate, You're you know, you've been terrific. Tough day
- 29:24Speaker 2: at the office for all of us, but we're not
- 29:26Speaker 2: forgetting everything that she's given as a West Australian athlete,
- 29:29Speaker 2: and we hope she goes on in places we desperately do.
- 29:32Speaker 4: Hey, I thought, you know how we had the first
- 29:35Speaker 4: week where clubs could sign their own players and then
- 29:39Speaker 4: we're now into the week where clubs can sign plays
- 29:42Speaker 4: from other clubs or internationals. I thought we'd see some
- 29:45Speaker 4: announcements last week as clubs signed their own players.
- 29:50Speaker 1: In a very difficult week to be on Instagram so difficult.
- 29:54Speaker 4: I've drifted into places I shouldn't drift into frankly, they
- 29:57Speaker 4: have nothing to do with that ball.
- 30:00Speaker 1: You get the articles.
- 30:01Speaker 2: Just look at the articles, Just look at it the lists.
- 30:03Speaker 2: Just look at at the video.
- 30:04Speaker 1: It's the fourteenth of.
- 30:06Speaker 2: All two weeks for the your own and then yeah,
- 30:10Speaker 2: not for the others. But even so, even so with that,
- 30:14Speaker 2: I just think that there's a lot going on. That's
- 30:18Speaker 2: like I think historically clubs have probably signed their own
- 30:22Speaker 2: list quicker than they are this time around.
- 30:24Speaker 4: Oh and do you and do you think then, Gordy,
- 30:27Speaker 4: that signing or not signing your own club players would
- 30:30Speaker 4: influence the conversations of having having in the next round with.
- 30:34Speaker 2: Oh Man and also too and and I'll tell you
- 30:38Speaker 2: what like it would be. It would be the best documentary,
- 30:43Speaker 2: it would, wouldn't it.
- 30:44Speaker 4: Yes, I actually suggested this to somebody who was a
- 30:49Speaker 4: general manager and they just about had a conniption.
- 30:51Speaker 2: And I thought, okay, maybe it would be. It would
- 30:55Speaker 2: be great for the sport if we could all agree
- 30:57Speaker 2: to do it. But it is pretty brutal, right, And
- 30:59Speaker 2: so what often happens and is definitely happenings as we
- 31:04Speaker 2: speak at the moment, is the domino effect. And so
- 31:07Speaker 2: there is a huge amount of conversations in place, but
- 31:12Speaker 2: they're all reliant on this one thing happening and when
- 31:15Speaker 2: that's right, and if that doesn't happen, everything else this
- 31:19Speaker 2: knock knock on effect. Yeah, and so there's a couple
- 31:22Speaker 2: of those scenarios in play at the moment, which will
- 31:26Speaker 2: potentially this week. So we'll be Wednesday when people hear this,
- 31:30Speaker 2: So probably this week will start a knock on effect.
- 31:33Speaker 2: And so you're kind of hamstrung. A lot of clubs
- 31:36Speaker 2: will be hamstrung in this. These one or two domino
- 31:39Speaker 2: effects fascinating and they've got probably four or five circumstances
- 31:43Speaker 2: off the back of them. So then you go boom,
- 31:46Speaker 2: boom boom, you know, like it happens really quickly. And
- 31:49Speaker 2: so yeah, I think that's probably connected to the reason
- 31:51Speaker 2: why clubs are a little way late. And then you know,
- 31:53Speaker 2: everyone likes that. Some different clubs like to announce different
- 31:57Speaker 2: ways or want to be confident that they can get
- 31:59Speaker 2: there full list together before they.
- 32:01Speaker 4: They are announcer defense end in the mid court and
- 32:03Speaker 4: the shooters or the whole list at once. Yeah, Oh
- 32:06Speaker 4: my god, I'm so stressful. Who'd be a head coach
- 32:08Speaker 4: and a list manager?
- 32:09Speaker 2: Yeah, I've been checking in on our new general manager
- 32:12Speaker 2: just to see how she's going show. It's it's tough.
- 32:15Speaker 2: It's really tough, even if you're maintaining lists or you know,
- 32:18Speaker 2: it's still there's players still going. You know, they tell
- 32:21Speaker 2: you there's dame, but their managers are off conversing. And
- 32:23Speaker 2: then there's I say this time and time again. And
- 32:26Speaker 2: then there are some managers that are just over the top,
- 32:30Speaker 2: like I don't think at all healthy or good for
- 32:33Speaker 2: the game. So and then there are some managers that
- 32:35Speaker 2: are brilliant, brilliant.
- 32:38Speaker 1: Well, what I'm hoping is that a lot of dickheads
- 32:40Speaker 1: on the internet who like to take a particular personal
- 32:44Speaker 1: dislike to one player and recognizing they've never met that
- 32:48Speaker 1: person or whatever, and then that player might end up
- 32:51Speaker 1: at their club. And I would hope that there are
- 32:54Speaker 1: big enough to go on the internet and then express
- 32:58Speaker 1: how bad they feel about having made that comment. I'm
- 33:01Speaker 1: certain that they won't, but there are a few people
- 33:05Speaker 1: who've been making comments over the past year who might
- 33:07Speaker 1: get it sucked in from me or what do you think?
- 33:10Speaker 2: Now, Well, let me confirm with you, Carolyn. I don't
- 33:15Speaker 2: know if you and I have been reading the same
- 33:16Speaker 2: dickhead comments. But there are a few dickheads.
- 33:19Speaker 1: Well, there's plenty of them out there. You can find it.
- 33:21Speaker 2: Let me tell you, there are a few dickheads that
- 33:23Speaker 2: are about to get those exact players at their club.
- 33:28Speaker 2: As I'm reading some of the commentary, I'm sitting there going, oh,
- 33:32Speaker 2: you idiot, Yeah, no, watch out, because it's about to happen.
- 33:36Speaker 2: Oh funny, isn't it.
- 33:38Speaker 1: It's a weekly reminded to be nice on the internet
- 33:40Speaker 1: as you are in real life. We will take a
- 33:43Speaker 1: little break and come back and hear about this.
- 33:45Speaker 2: Is social life.
- 33:58Speaker 1: Oh well, Gordy, love having you here, Thank you very much.
- 34:02Speaker 1: There as many rumors I would like to ask you
- 34:04Speaker 1: to confirm or deny, but I know you won't, so
- 34:07Speaker 1: we'll move on and we'll talk about something else we've
- 34:10Speaker 1: talked about. Lady Elizabeth's been very cultured this week, very
- 34:14Speaker 1: very culture.
- 34:15Speaker 2: Well let me start though with the clip that you.
- 34:17Speaker 4: Put up Carolyn on the interwebs, on the socials last
- 34:21Speaker 4: week about our conversation about Sophie Dwyer. It might very
- 34:24Speaker 4: well be our most few clip, and I kept popping
- 34:27Speaker 4: up on my feed because people had liked it or
- 34:31Speaker 4: commented on it, and I kept looking at going, I
- 34:33Speaker 4: can't believe. Our most popular clip was when I had
- 34:36Speaker 4: been fencing with my husband. I've got scratches all over
- 34:39Speaker 4: my arms, I've got a shitty farm shirt on a
- 34:42Speaker 4: shitty hat. So I thought at least that I'd look
- 34:44Speaker 4: at least like I started to care about myself. But
- 34:46Speaker 4: really that all felt by the wayside, I've been you
- 34:49Speaker 4: love lovely.
- 34:50Speaker 1: It's actually our most popular clip was the one we're
- 34:52Speaker 1: talking about me using a water pistol, and my.
- 34:55Speaker 4: That is true.
- 34:56Speaker 1: Yeah, I think that pflects well, but yeah, this way.
- 34:58Speaker 1: But also again, you know, just with what we were
- 35:00Speaker 1: talking about. Then a number of people go, we shouldn't
- 35:02Speaker 1: even be talking about this, and I know their intention
- 35:04Speaker 1: is good. What they're saying is Sophie is not responsible
- 35:08Speaker 1: for what happened with the diamonds. But that was the
- 35:12Speaker 1: whole point of the clip.
- 35:14Speaker 4: Anyway, Yes, anyway, So this week, this week, I've gone
- 35:20Speaker 4: from fencing. Last week I went from fencing on Monday
- 35:23Speaker 4: to Friday night, I went to the premiere at the
- 35:28Speaker 4: opera house of The Drover's Wife. Now, The Driver's Wife
- 35:31Speaker 4: is an opera that is based on the movie which
- 35:35Speaker 4: was written by Leah Purcell and Leah Purscell has directed
- 35:40Speaker 4: The Drover's Wife opera. What is Leah Purcell's linked to netball?
- 35:44Speaker 2: You ask?
- 35:44Speaker 4: She's a defender, Like really, if you're going to be
- 35:47Speaker 4: smart and pat talonan, you're probably going to be a defender.
- 35:50Speaker 4: She loves Neddie and comes to a lot of games,
- 35:53Speaker 4: so lots of Sydney fans in particular might have seen
- 35:56Speaker 4: her out at gains over the years. And so I
- 36:01Speaker 4: got invited along and I took my daughter and the
- 36:04Speaker 4: Governor General was there, so you know, I was laughing
- 36:07Speaker 4: with Evelyn that she was at school that Liz More
- 36:09Speaker 4: on Thursday, and then on Friday night she was standing
- 36:12Speaker 4: in a function room drinking sparkling water while her mother
- 36:16Speaker 4: had to go at the free champagne. And it was
- 36:19Speaker 4: the you know, it was Sydney's cultural elite was there.
- 36:22Speaker 4: It was great fun. But the opera itself, so I'm
- 36:26Speaker 4: not an opera officiato by any means. I'm only mean
- 36:28Speaker 4: to one other opera before that a cousin of mine
- 36:30Speaker 4: dragged me along to I didn't understand. The Driver's Wife
- 36:34Speaker 4: is fantastic, very confronting, some very adult themes, but it's
- 36:38Speaker 4: the old Henry Lawson story that's been reimagined from the
- 36:42Speaker 4: drover's wife, like the woman's point of view, and the
- 36:45Speaker 4: opera has some really fascinating and awesome sort of cultural
- 36:50Speaker 4: references in First Nations sort of themes running through it.
- 36:53Speaker 4: So it's a real First Nation story based on a
- 36:57Speaker 4: story that was written by a white bloke, you know,
- 36:59Speaker 4: a couple of hundred years ago. So it was just fabulous.
- 37:02Speaker 4: And when I went to the opera previously, I really
- 37:05Speaker 4: struggled because I couldn't understand anything, and now I'm old,
- 37:08Speaker 4: I even struggle to understand more. But they had a
- 37:10Speaker 4: screen where all the all the lyrics appeared, so I
- 37:14Speaker 4: could read and you know, and watch it as well.
- 37:16Speaker 4: But it was amazing. It was such a beautifully told story,
- 37:19Speaker 4: and it was set in the high country of New
- 37:24Speaker 4: South Wales of Victoria, up around Snow River, so it
- 37:26Speaker 4: was an area that we'd been to as a family,
- 37:28Speaker 4: and we loved it. And I kept checking the Devil
- 37:30Speaker 4: and saying, Okay, she's like, yeah.
- 37:32Speaker 2: Loved it.
- 37:32Speaker 4: So it was such a It was such a great story.
- 37:35Speaker 4: So no dribbl recommends if you get the opportunity to
- 37:38Speaker 4: go along to the opera house. It's played in Brisbane.
- 37:41Speaker 4: I don't know if we go anywhere else around the country.
- 37:43Speaker 4: I suspected I'll end up in Melbourne. It is a
- 37:46Speaker 4: great story and it's so thought provoking. I've just been
- 37:50Speaker 4: turning it over in my mind the whole weekend. So yeah,
- 37:53Speaker 4: go and see Drever's.
- 37:54Speaker 2: Wife leave herself. That was in the series High Country.
- 37:58Speaker 2: It was a High Country. Yeah, yeah, and yeah, so
- 38:00Speaker 2: I interviewed her in the Grand Final two years ago.
- 38:03Speaker 2: That's right, you would have.
- 38:04Speaker 4: Yeah, Yeah, she loves her netball, loves it, break it.
- 38:08Speaker 4: She wrote the film, she wrote them. There's a novel,
- 38:11Speaker 4: so she wrote the novel and the film, and then
- 38:13Speaker 4: she directed the opera. But I think some my just
- 38:18Speaker 4: hit my level of knowledge. I don't think she might
- 38:21Speaker 4: have written. She was involved in the writer, but I
- 38:23Speaker 4: think some opera person, music person wrote all the score
- 38:26Speaker 4: and all that sort of stuff. So yeah, she's deeply
- 38:29Speaker 4: involved and it's just fantastic. And like I think twelve
- 38:33Speaker 4: of the fifteen cast were First Nations people, so you
- 38:37Speaker 4: don't like that's something I'd get to see in opera. Like,
- 38:40Speaker 4: it was great, It was really good.
- 38:42Speaker 1: If you don't know Leah Purcell. There is the ABC
- 38:45Speaker 1: has their Conversation Now and there was a great interview
- 38:48Speaker 1: with Leah Purcell and I think it was Sarah Kanowski,
- 38:50Speaker 1: but it could have been Richard Fidler, but anyway, she
- 38:53Speaker 1: talked in that about how she came back to netball
- 38:57Speaker 1: after she came out of an abusive relationship and her
- 39:00Speaker 1: mother died in sort of fairly quick succession. She had
- 39:03Speaker 1: a couple of these very traumatic life things happened, and
- 39:06Speaker 1: she went back to netball and really found her joy
- 39:09Speaker 1: in that and it's really and it really helped her
- 39:12Speaker 1: to kind of re establish her creative momentum and the like.
- 39:15Speaker 1: So it's very very worth listening to if you can
- 39:19Speaker 1: dig that one out there. So that's another notable recommends.
- 39:22Speaker 2: Oh look at Us go.
- 39:24Speaker 1: And there's also a great book that came out a
- 39:26Speaker 1: couple of years ago called The Story Thief by Kira
- 39:29Speaker 1: Gedty's Gewdes, which is based on the drover's wife, and
- 39:35Speaker 1: it's the imagining of someone saying that the young woman
- 39:40Speaker 1: who is a protagonist of the story saying, I think
- 39:42Speaker 1: that Henry Lawson stole this story from my family's real
- 39:45Speaker 1: life experience.
- 39:46Speaker 2: So that's a.
- 39:47Speaker 1: Really good read. Yeah, it's entirely fiction, but it's a
- 39:52Speaker 1: great story if you want to read anything around that time,
- 39:55Speaker 1: and she does. There's an amazing part in there about
- 39:58Speaker 1: how Henry Lawson's funeral in Sydney, which was and I
- 40:02Speaker 1: think I think he's buried in cemetery sort of around
- 40:07Speaker 1: somewhere around Bondai there, you know that one high up on.
- 40:12Speaker 2: Clevely.
- 40:12Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, and you know that's thousands of people descending
- 40:16Speaker 1: upon it to see his body taken past. So that
- 40:20Speaker 1: one's called the story. These so very cultured from no
- 40:25Speaker 1: Driple today.
- 40:26Speaker 2: Very culture. Have you been to an opera, Carol.
- 40:29Speaker 1: I've been to a couple. And I used to work
- 40:32Speaker 1: at q PAK, the Queensland Performing Arts Center while I
- 40:34Speaker 1: was at university, which was great because you would do
- 40:37Speaker 1: your job and then we had to kind of stand
- 40:39Speaker 1: in the theater and so I watched a number of
- 40:41Speaker 1: operas that way. All I can say, very dramatic. You know,
- 40:45Speaker 1: one failed love affair, take your own life. I think
- 40:48Speaker 1: one failed love affair. Go out with your friends to
- 40:51Speaker 1: the Paddo tavern and order them to kill a slammets.
- 40:54Speaker 4: Yeah, and then go and play Netball the next day
- 40:56Speaker 4: with your mates, with your tried.
- 40:57Speaker 1: Getting on a long wolf like yeah, for it will
- 41:01Speaker 1: be an opera.
- 41:02Speaker 2: No, No, I've never been and given the whole Calisthenics
- 41:06Speaker 2: background and every like that, I thought maybe I might
- 41:09Speaker 2: have floated past one in my time, But no, I
- 41:11Speaker 2: actually haven't.
- 41:12Speaker 1: No, and not only would be Calisthenics the opera.
- 41:15Speaker 2: Klisthenics the opera, actually Kelocetics. Victoria have reached out to
- 41:19Speaker 2: me to ask if i'd be an ambassador for them
- 41:21Speaker 2: off Wich.
- 41:26Speaker 1: I love that, just to acknowledge it manifesting.
- 41:30Speaker 4: I think there's there's a business idea right of you
- 41:33Speaker 4: marrying up Netball and calisthenicsking it somewhere.
- 41:37Speaker 1: An ambassador for Klisthenics Victoria is a very lucrative You'll
- 41:41Speaker 1: be living in Peppermint Grove.
- 41:42Speaker 2: Soon, I know. I know i'd be nice for my mother.
- 41:45Speaker 2: I've just acknowledged whoever it is centered to me. I
- 41:47Speaker 2: quickly looked at it when I was on the plane
- 41:48Speaker 2: last night, but I haven't got back to it, which
- 41:50Speaker 2: I will. But yeah, no, I haven't been to an
- 41:52Speaker 2: opera and I've only seen like little bits on TV.
- 41:55Speaker 2: And you know when it's part of a show, movie whatever,
- 41:59Speaker 2: and same. I'm just a bit like I think I
- 42:01Speaker 2: could go to the ballet. I haven't even been to
- 42:04Speaker 2: the ballet. I just don't know.
- 42:06Speaker 1: I think there is They have opera on the harbor
- 42:09Speaker 1: here and you can and you sit there down near
- 42:12Speaker 1: Missus mcquarie's chair and the botanical gardens. The opera house
- 42:15Speaker 1: is in the backdrop there and they have a stage.
- 42:17Speaker 1: And we went and said, I've seen a couple of those.
- 42:19Speaker 1: When I saw one that was tur and Dot and
- 42:21Speaker 1: you know that Ness and Dormer song you would have
- 42:23Speaker 1: found about in advertise. Remember it's three tens you doing,
- 42:29Speaker 1: so it's that one. So there's a lot of the
- 42:30Speaker 1: music that you would actually recognize, but it's not. Yeah,
- 42:36Speaker 1: I'm I'm also not an officionado, but I have been
- 42:39Speaker 1: able to enjoy it from time to time.
- 42:43Speaker 4: Well, I will say that The Drever's Wife is a
- 42:45Speaker 4: very accessible opera. Like you don't go there going I
- 42:49Speaker 4: don't know what just happened. Everyone just sang anything in
- 42:51Speaker 4: you go there to go? Oh, there was a story.
- 42:53Speaker 4: I understood it. I could see it, I could see
- 42:55Speaker 4: the lyrics. I know exactly what happened.
- 42:57Speaker 1: That's me, I reckon, Sue Gordion, you would have done
- 42:59Speaker 1: it of Boom Crash Opera in your time.
- 43:03Speaker 2: I wish I who's the lead singer of Boom Crash Opera? Yes,
- 43:08Speaker 2: that was so long ago. Got used for a second,
- 43:11Speaker 2: and I was thinking of John Stevens, because I say,
- 43:13Speaker 2: I would have been happy to do a to John
- 43:15Speaker 2: Stevens as well. But anyhow, no, he was noiseworks wasn't
- 43:18Speaker 2: he noise?
- 43:19Speaker 1: I would have liked he. He did an acoustic set
- 43:24Speaker 1: at the launch of the Lane Beachley Foundation, the lunch
- 43:27Speaker 1: here in Sydney. Were you at that one, Liz down
- 43:29Speaker 1: that was?
- 43:31Speaker 2: It was years ago?
- 43:32Speaker 1: Yeah, it was, it was And there were a lot
- 43:34Speaker 1: of the women in the room just just gripping the table,
- 43:38Speaker 1: thinking I've got to keep my shit together here when
- 43:40Speaker 1: John Stevens was up there singing and doing this acoustic set.
- 43:44Speaker 2: It was Let me tell you a quick little ironic
- 43:47Speaker 2: story about John Stephenson's I was Johnson. I was in
- 43:51Speaker 2: Quantis Club with Mel McLaughlin, now, who just did come
- 43:55Speaker 2: down and said and she used to work on the
- 43:56Speaker 2: NETFA with its. Two of us were sitting there after
- 43:59Speaker 2: doing a network game, having a chat and we were
- 44:01Speaker 2: talking about it and we were like, isn't it like
- 44:04Speaker 2: the best looking frontman? And he literally walked into the
- 44:07Speaker 2: club and sat next to us. You are mate, Yeah,
- 44:14Speaker 2: I couldn't believe it, and we were just like, that
- 44:16Speaker 2: is awkward but not important if you know what of
- 44:19Speaker 2: him as that.
- 44:22Speaker 1: Well, on that eerie note, we're going to have to
- 44:24Speaker 1: wrap before the day. We will be back again on Friday,
- 44:27Speaker 1: and Sue Gardian will be joining us again for Friday's episode.
- 44:30Speaker 1: I have no doubt there will be other things that
- 44:32Speaker 1: she can tell us about where she has controlled the
- 44:35Speaker 1: universe with her mind, because that is how spectacular Subordian thista.
- 44:40Speaker 1: That's all we've got time for.
- 44:41Speaker 2: I'm Caroline Swandel, I'm listeners, I'm Sue Guardian.
- 44:44Speaker 4: Bye bye,
