- 0:04Mary Condon, welcome back Iowa Sports Radio Network boy shares
- 0:08had a long career, hasn't she? This isn't I.
- 0:11Didn't say what, just making a point.
- 0:14Dua Lipa is the share of this generation.
- 0:17I OK, I don't know. Dua Loopa do a leap, Dua Lipa.
- 0:21But somebody saw her up close and personal.
- 0:25I'm guessing it must be David Eichel.
- 0:26That's the reason you're playing this music.
- 0:28Hello, David Eichel. Trenton.
- 0:30Ken, How are you, Sir? I'm doing well, guys.
- 0:34And actually, this is perfect time because there are some
- 0:37breaking news for Iowa football that just came out about 45
- 0:40seconds ago. Lay it on us.
- 0:42The hell with Sharon. Do a leap.
- 0:43So, according to CBS Sports's Matt Zennett, Chris Pelosi is
- 0:49going to be the new special teams coordinator.
- 0:52Trent like that, do you right? Yes, that is a name.
- 0:55He was what with the staff a while ago, came back as a
- 0:58analyst this past season. Do I got the timeline right
- 1:00here, David? Yes, yeah, I'm, I'm pulling up
- 1:04his profile right now. Actually, Elliot and I just
- 1:06talked about our podcast. I posted about 30 minutes ago
- 1:09and he called it, he said that was the name to watch.
- 1:11So he got to give my colleague here some crap for that.
- 1:15But yeah, Chris, he was the analyst this past season for
- 1:19Iowa, but he has numerous experience across college
- 1:23football. I believe he has some NFL
- 1:24experience as well. He's coached special teams
- 1:27before. So this just seems like kind of
- 1:29a slam dunk. How many other guys were in the
- 1:32running? Any idea?
- 1:35You know, I think Brock Sherman probably got an interview, and
- 1:38it's funny because I remember mentioning you guys last week
- 1:40that Miles Taylor might be a name to watch.
- 1:42And now ironically, he's actually the new safeties coach
- 1:45at the University of Nebraska as of yesterday, according to Matt
- 1:49Rule. That's kind of been swept under
- 1:51the radar since Dylan Rayola is now backing up another Big 10
- 1:55quarterback, which did not have that on my.
- 1:58No, but you know what, he's got that injury, right and that
- 2:01might that's got to be play a big role in the fact that he's
- 2:05but he break his leg. Was that what it was?
- 2:07Broken leg or? I think it was a fractured
- 2:10fibula, you. Think so, yeah.
- 2:13It's a painful injury for sure, but I think he's supposed to be
- 2:16clear in the spring. I really don't think that that
- 2:18was going to scare too many people away.
- 2:21I just think that, you know, his recruitment for being a five
- 2:24star was so under the radar. It feels like in this transfer
- 2:27portal cycle, it's just their rumblings and all of a sudden
- 2:29it's like, oh, he's going to Oregon.
- 2:32Yeah, Fairpoints and here we are.
- 2:34Yeah, that's incredibly. That will be something down the
- 2:37road. Obviously we'll get to and kind
- 2:39of those offseason topics to the portal for Iowa.
- 2:41They have got 11 guys that have been committed.
- 2:45It's been a little bit drier here leading up to tomorrow's
- 2:48deadline for people to enter into the portal.
- 2:52They're still doing work. What's the latest on the portal
- 2:54front for Iowa? Any news, any information, Any
- 2:57guys that are still visiting at this point in time?
- 3:01Yeah. So I mean, I think Iowa's done
- 3:02terrific job in this portal cycle, guys.
- 3:04And it's been very interesting to kind of watch the way they've
- 3:07approached everything because you look at the list, they only
- 3:10have one, I believe only one of their current commit only has
- 3:13one year of eligibility remaining, and that's Bryce
- 3:15Stevenson, the Holy Cross defensive tackle.
- 3:18But everybody else has at least two or three years of
- 3:20eligibility. So it does seem like Iowa's
- 3:23going after high level playmakers from the FCS or low
- 3:26FBS level saying, hey, look, we're going to give you every
- 3:29chance to be able to go out there and compete your first
- 3:31season and then maybe they'll break out in that second year
- 3:34outside. I think I think Tony Diaz was an
- 3:36absolute steal by the way. He I think he's going to be Iowa
- 3:40second league receiver next season.
- 3:42It will not surprise me. I think he's that good.
- 3:45But Iowa right now, I believe they have an SMU wide receiver
- 3:49transfer on campus. Day did not see any game action
- 3:53last season. I believe he's got three years
- 3:54of eligibility remaining, but he's going to be more than
- 3:58likely prefer to walk on. I still expect to hear some news
- 4:02regarding a punter here sometime in the next couple of days.
- 4:06And I do think that I was still scouring maybe another defensive
- 4:09line commit at this point. I think the secondary is pretty
- 4:13well set, but they might take another cornerback.
- 4:16But as I said, I think Iowa's done a terrific job in this
- 4:19portal cycle and they have some impact guys that now be all that
- 4:22we have a chance to to compete next season.
- 4:25I don't know how accurate this is.
- 4:26Would have gone to a 24/7 Sports.
- 4:28You guys do a phenomenal job with the portal.
- 4:30Apparently there were 10,576 that entered the portal as of
- 4:34Wednesday morning. There are still, and it closes
- 4:37tomorrow, 6846 players that enter the portal looking for
- 4:41their new team. They're not going to fill all of
- 4:44those spots, which is just unbelievable to me.
- 4:48Some of the bad advice and some of the poor decisions that
- 4:51ultimately will come back I think to haunt some of these
- 4:54guys. I mean, it's just not
- 4:56sustainable, right? I think everybody under the sun
- 4:59knows that. But we continue to kind of push
- 5:01it down the line. I do think once you get the five
- 5:04year, eventually it's going to be you get 5 years to play
- 5:07college sports. That's what it's going to be.
- 5:10A big reason why that the coaches now have stayed at a red
- 5:13shirt year should be 9 games is because the NCAA is going to
- 5:17eventually say, well sorry, 75% of the season.
- 5:20Why don't we just make it 5 years?
- 5:22That's what the coaches want. That's what Kirk Ferris has
- 5:24wanted for a long time. No red shirts.
- 5:27You get 1 transfer. That's what needs to happen.
- 5:30That's what's going to level everything out.
- 5:32And I do think eventually we're going to get there.
- 5:35But I also think can that it's like 38.9% of FBS college
- 5:40players there in the portal. I give some of absolutely absurd
- 5:44number and there's going to be a lot of guys in that portal.
- 5:47As you mentioned, their career is over and they don't even know
- 5:50it. No.
- 5:52It's sad, it's a sad reality of this and people chasing money,
- 5:55chasing bags, having agents that are rogue agents many times
- 5:59telling them things that aren't exactly true.
- 6:01Definitely a lot of negativity out there.
- 6:04David, when you go through, you mentioned Tony Diaz, how about
- 6:06on the defensive side? I'm really intrigued with a lot
- 6:09of those three different safeties that come in.
- 6:11Brown looks to be maybe the most ready made after what he did at
- 6:14James Madison this past season. And maybe the biggest question
- 6:17is what are they going to do with Zach Luttmer?
- 6:19He played corner a bunch this season.
- 6:21He can play cash, he can play both safety positions.
- 6:23Is that kind of the key to this all?
- 6:25Maybe finding the best position for him and then filling in the
- 6:28gaps for there? Or let's fill in the gaps first
- 6:31and we can put Luttmer wherever we want because he's that good.
- 6:34I think it's still in the gas and Pope Luttner wherever, I
- 6:37mean he's Cooper de Jean Light or as Mark Granowski called him,
- 6:40what the Walmart Cooper did or the Kmart or something like
- 6:43that. I'll tell you what, that's not
- 6:46that any version of being Cooper de Jean.
- 6:47I think you're doing pretty well for yourself, right?
- 6:50So look, I think you get Tyler Brown.
- 6:53I think he's a perfect fit for strong safety.
- 6:55He tests out incredibly well. Pro Football Focus, he's great
- 6:58and run support was a difference maker. 80 tackles last season
- 7:02for James Madison. I told you guys last week, I
- 7:05love Anthony Hawkins. I mean, AT-632-O5, you can't
- 7:08teach that size. I think he has a high level
- 7:11capability. What more I think makes a lot of
- 7:14sense at the cash spot. But I also know if they can't
- 7:17get a lockdown guy on the opposite corner of Deshaun Lean,
- 7:20if Deshaun Lean, he doesn't take that next step.
- 7:22We know the value of what a lockdown corner brings to Iowa's
- 7:26defense. So do you throw a lot more out
- 7:27there? Do you throw maybe Rashad
- 7:29Godfrey at the cash position with what he did, especially in
- 7:32that showing against Nebraska and how hard he can hit his
- 7:36playmaking ability? Do you throw Jalen Watson in
- 7:39that cash position? I think it's going to be this.
- 7:42They filled in the gaps they're trying to install.
- 7:45I don't want to say a new defense, but you think about how
- 7:47many guys they're replacing, right?
- 7:49I mean, lose Cohen, lose Xavier, lose TJ, lose all three-year
- 7:52linebackers. You lose multiple guys on the
- 7:55defensive line. Like I think there's going to be
- 7:568 new starters next season for Iowa's defense.
- 8:00I don't have to listen from me, but I think it's either 8 or 9
- 8:03and Lutmer's going to be one of the guys that's going to be have
- 8:05to be the leader of that defense.
- 8:06So whatever the coaches say, you already know what he's going to
- 8:09say. Yes coach, I got it.
- 8:12That's exactly why I think it's going to happen.
- 8:14Absolutely. Let's switch to basketball.
- 8:16If it would have should have last night that marquee win that
- 8:19it has eluded them so far. Look, for a while like maybe it
- 8:22was going to happen last night. They kept exchanging baskets.
- 8:25You knew that somebody was going to blink at some point.
- 8:27I was had a couple of misses Purdue continue to make and they
- 8:31would eventually wrestle the lead away from them and go on to
- 8:33win by by 7. But look, I was in the game.
- 8:38There's Ben McCollum will say the same thing, No moral
- 8:40victories, but they're they're close.
- 8:43I think they're close to picking off one of those teams, getting
- 8:46one of those victories that so far they've been unable to find.
- 8:51At the risk of sounding pretentious, guys, I was nervous
- 8:54for Iowa when Braden Smith had zero points at half.
- 8:57Yeah, because you knew exactly what he's capable of.
- 9:00He's the best point guard in America.
- 9:02Remember last year, I know it's two different systems, two
- 9:04different teams, but last year Iowa was looking like they were
- 9:07going to knock off Purdue in in Carver and Braden Smith went
- 9:11bonkers in that second-half. So it just kind of felt like
- 9:14it's almost a little bit of the tale of of yesterday and Ben
- 9:17McCollum, be the first to tell you, you can't give up 73% from
- 9:21the field in the second-half on the road against the top five
- 9:24team. You're you're just not going to
- 9:25win, right? They made nine in the last 10
- 9:28shots. I know some people are talking
- 9:30about fishing. Yeah, there's a handful of bad
- 9:32calls. They lost because they can't
- 9:33stop Purdue. That's exactly why they lost.
- 9:35I thought they did a good job on the glass.
- 9:37I thought that starts two things. 1, he has to avoid foul
- 9:41trouble. He he just can't.
- 9:43He's too good. He's played too much basketball
- 9:45to get in this much foul trouble, especially early.
- 9:47And two, I thought there were two horrible shots from in it
- 9:50last night down the stretch. That's something to where, you
- 9:54know, we talked about the best player getting the ball and
- 9:56taking over. And there's a level to that
- 9:58where I agree. But it's almost like in those
- 10:01moments where Bennett just doesn't have his eyes on
- 10:04anything other than the basket and he misses a better maybe
- 10:07shot opportunity when guys around him were hitting threes.
- 10:10Cale Combs had four threes last night.
- 10:12He didn't get a look. Tavion Banks had that great shot
- 10:15from darn near 30 feet do at least give Iowa a chance.
- 10:19But I think that search has to be better and ultimately guys,
- 10:23Alvaro full Garris has to be better.
- 10:25That's the key to unlocking and getting over that hump.
- 10:28Alvaro Full Garris has to be Iowa's second best player if
- 10:31they want to knock off some of these teams.
- 10:33A lot of talk after the game, McCullum mentioned defensively
- 10:36the bags just not playing good and and pick a roll coverage
- 10:39that defensive end of the floor. You mentioned what Purdue did
- 10:42offensively late to run away and get the victory in this one.
- 10:45David, I want to go this direction with you though.
- 10:47When you look look at this squad and what's still in front of
- 10:49them, Indiana on the road, but that's a winnable game.
- 10:52There's a lot of winnable ones in front of them.
- 10:54But the quality victories, you get Nebraska twice.
- 10:57He thought, well, I'd probably get a split out of that coming
- 10:59into the year, lose over there. Well, not so fast after what we
- 11:02seen Nebraska do you get Purdue? They already lost to him there
- 11:05and they come to Carver. Certainly not going to be an
- 11:07easy game in terms of quality victories.
- 11:10Is there a little bit of concern here?
- 11:12They don't have a quad one victory yet and you look through
- 11:14they'll be wins, they'll be plenty of wins where they'll be
- 11:16quality wins out of this group. I think that's the big question
- 11:21mark. But the other side of it too is
- 11:22Iowa's been extremely competitive in every single game
- 11:26except the Michigan State win. Like even the Illinois won.
- 11:28The Illinois loss was deflating, but they came back, they fought,
- 11:32they got the crowd involved. Like you felt like they
- 11:34potentially could have picked them off, right?
- 11:37I think there's a level to that where this team's going to start
- 11:40to figure it out. And I'll be honest, you look at
- 11:41the losses the at Minnesota 1, still the worst one, but by far
- 11:45to me, right? But these next seven games,
- 11:49there's a very realistic chance to me that Iowa can go five and
- 11:53two over the next 7. And I think there'll be a couple
- 11:55quality wins in there. And if you go out there and you
- 11:58beat, you know, Indiana by I'm just throwing a number out there
- 12:01like 15 winning on the road in the big 10 matters.
- 12:03If Iowa picks off a couple of those, I think we'll have a
- 12:06chance if they get the five and two over the next seven, I think
- 12:10for the most part, people level it out and I think there'll be
- 12:12some rationale. But the other counter argument
- 12:15is, guys, the bubble sucks. The bubble sucks this season.
- 12:19So I was going to have that every single chance, avoid the
- 12:22bad losses, and it's going to ultimately be enough to put them
- 12:25in the tournament. It turned out I just spent a
- 12:27couple of minutes on officiating and no, we certainly weren't
- 12:30blaming that on the outcome of the game as well.
- 12:33I I couldn't I can't get past the Kupper Kotch, you know, put
- 12:36his arms out to not let that guy try.
- 12:38And that was the big fella, right?
- 12:39It was Clough. Yeah, Clough was trying to run
- 12:41through. But the one I don't I that we
- 12:43didn't bring up and I I would love to get some clarity.
- 12:46So Trey Kaufman, Rens laying on the floor with the basketball,
- 12:49remember this in the first half and it was under Iowa's basket
- 12:53and he didn't want to give it up.
- 12:56And then a little skirmish, very little skirmish, and double
- 12:59technicals were called What? What was up with that?
- 13:02I didn't see any pushing whatsoever.
- 13:06It it was soft. That happens in every single
- 13:09YMCA League game. That happens at every level all
- 13:12the time. I look, ultimately I get it.
- 13:15It's a psychological battle, right?
- 13:17Kaufman Ren didn't want to give up the ball.
- 13:18It was Iowa ball. Alvaro was trying to get the
- 13:21ball. Kaufman Ren, I think, overly
- 13:23sold the movement on his body. You see him kind of push himself
- 13:26up with his legs. Those are two very competitive,
- 13:30very good players going at it. I thought it was ridiculous.
- 13:33They spent that long observing that.
- 13:35And I thought double technical fouls are the dumbest.
- 13:38Ridiculous. Yeah.
- 13:39In college basketball, in basketball in general.
- 13:41It's stupid. It accomplished this absolutely
- 13:44nothing. And I don't think it was
- 13:45Kaufman, Red or Fulgaris that were that were teed up.
- 13:48I think it was two other players, wasn't it?
- 13:50It was another player for Purdue and I think Fulgaris.
- 13:52It was Fulgaris was it? Kaufman ran on the Unless they
- 13:55changed the official score book from last night, but I thought
- 14:00that was I'll I'll double check it, but it was initially called
- 14:03on full Garris and Kaufman and I thought it was stupid.
- 14:06It let the boys play it. Might have been Harris Harris
- 14:10for for. Anyways, not that big a deal,
- 14:12just drove me nuts anyways. Opportunity against Indiana, an
- 14:16Indiana team that is really in the same boat as Iowa, right?
- 14:19They're all right, they're pretty good.
- 14:20They're tournament team, but not sure if there's more to the
- 14:23Hoosiers than what it is. But you couple it with Darren
- 14:26Devries, a lot of people wanted him to be the Hawkeye coach.
- 14:30On the other side, there are plenty of Hoosier fans.
- 14:32They wanted Ben McCollum. It's going to be an interesting
- 14:341-2 coaches that were kind of in the same boat a year ago back in
- 14:37March, and now suddenly they're going to be facing off over at
- 14:40Assembly Hall. Do you know how upset I am that
- 14:44Darren Devries is not coming to Carver season?
- 14:47I thought that was such a missed opportunity by the league.
- 14:50Like, I get it, but the storylines behind that, that
- 14:53would have sold out. The booze would have been so
- 14:56loud for debris. It made so much sense.
- 14:59I'm right there with you. I think they're very similar
- 15:01teams. I think Tucker Debris has been
- 15:03OK this season. They have a couple, you know,
- 15:05big shooters. I just think the big thing is
- 15:07can Iowa go on the road and close out a game?
- 15:09Like that's the biggest issue with this team.
- 15:12Go back to last night, Trent, like they only Iowa was only out
- 15:14rebounded by three and Purdue is a massive basketball team.
- 15:19Iowa's going to have to go in there.
- 15:20They've got to learn how to take over in a hostile environment.
- 15:23They got to start fast and that's the one thing I took
- 15:25away. Also, last night Iowa started
- 15:27the ball fast offensively and that's been a real big struggle.
- 15:30But I'm right there with you. And again, if you could ever go
- 15:33in the at Indiana and escape with a win, it's never a bad
- 15:37win. I don't care how bad Indiana is.
- 15:39That, to me is a quality win. Do either of you 2 basketball
- 15:43aficionados know why the seemingly college basketball the
- 15:48Power 4-5 have given up Thursdays?
- 15:51They just don't play on Thursday anymore.
- 15:53Well, that used to be the PAC Twelves Night.
- 15:55Yeah, that's true. It always was what but the but I
- 15:57would play some Thursday games didn't and maybe they do have
- 16:00some on the sky. I was looking ahead to tonight.
- 16:02There's no games. I mean, there's a bunch of
- 16:04games, but not involved in anybody I want to watch, right?
- 16:08But it's just like Thursday would be AI would think at night
- 16:12that they would want to get involved in.
- 16:15Well, and the Big 10 pretty much plays games all the time, but
- 16:18the ACC doesn't, the SEC doesn't.
- 16:20The Big 12 doesn't normally play Thursday, so I think that's the
- 16:23reason the Big 10 had kind of grabbed a little bit of that.
- 16:25Now they got just the sheer volume of teams right, but for
- 16:28the most right it was. A PAC 12 thing, right?
- 16:30Yeah, right. It was PAC 12.
- 16:31Yeah, that's probably the reason because that conference is no
- 16:35longer. No, it is not.
- 16:36Not as it is. Yeah, but but not and Morgan.
- 16:40Street, get the Alliance. Guys, Oh my God.
- 16:43Long live the Alliance. For.
- 16:45Sure. The alliance.
- 16:45Hey, David, over on the women's basketball side, a match up
- 16:48tonight against Oregon, it's going to get a whole lot more
- 16:51difficult. Two home games, 2 very winnable
- 16:53games, Iowa, a project about four point favorite against
- 16:56Oregon and save against Michigan State.
- 16:57And then it gets even deeper from there.
- 16:59This feels like when you're kind of looking at those stretches of
- 17:01the season, this might be the most important one.
- 17:04If at minimum, the Iowa women get to get homecourt for the
- 17:07first two rounds, get a top four seed at Carver and have that
- 17:10opportunity, it feels like this stretch here the next couple of
- 17:13weeks is going to matter most. Yeah, you talk about getting the
- 17:16chance to get quality wins. Look at the women's schedule.
- 17:18Like Oregon's know as a mid Big 10 team and they're 14 and 4.
- 17:22Then they get they get Maryland, they get Michigan State.
- 17:25I mean, they they have to find a way to split these next like
- 17:28four or five games. They're playing a lot of ranked
- 17:30teams. The only other unranked team
- 17:32they play in this stretch tramp is USC and there's so much
- 17:37talent on USC minus Juju Watkins, of course, with
- 17:40sideline with her injury. This is an important stretch,
- 17:43especially from the standpoint Iowa should have lost against
- 17:46Indiana. They had a terrific second-half.
- 17:48They held Indiana like 4 points in the third quarter.
- 17:51But it was they were so bad offensively, especially
- 17:54starting. Iowa's got to get it done
- 17:56tonight. It's going to be a late game.
- 17:58I think it's eight O 5 tip on then as you mentioned, that next
- 18:01stretch, boy, they better pull it together.
- 18:04They can't turn the ball over as much as they have and they have
- 18:07to get the crowd involved right away.
- 18:09These are this is a game tonight where I don't want to say you
- 18:11can't lose, but there's a lot more pressure on the next two
- 18:15weeks if they lose tonight. Does the Big 10 win the national
- 18:19championship Monday, or is there an upset brewing?
- 18:23I would take Indiana -18 1/2. I think Indiana's by far the
- 18:29best team. I think they're going to
- 18:30absolutely crush Miami, and Miami has injuries on the
- 18:33defensive side and it's already tough enough to even try to stop
- 18:37stop Indiana on offense. Somehow Iowa did for the most
- 18:40part. I would.
- 18:42I would hammer Indiana spread. Good stuff, David Eichold,
- 18:46Hawkeye Insider, part of 24/7 Sports.
- 18:48Thanks for what you do for us, David.
- 18:49Appreciate you coming on. Have a great rest of your week.
- 18:52You too guys always appreciate you.
- 18:54Take care. Good to talk to you David.
- 18:55I cold so we check in on the Hawks with David I cold.
- 18:59I just had to pop up in front of me.
- 19:01Wish I could find it again. I know this is not not anywhere
- 19:05on your radar yet, but this World Baseball Classic, have you
- 19:08seen the line up for the States? No, I mean just the dudes that
- 19:12are playing in this thing. How are they going to lose the
- 19:14game? They will.
- 19:16They will. Yeah, but I mean, my good God
- 19:18talk about it and All Star, who's going to start game one
- 19:22skiing school ball? Well, what are the other teams
- 19:25too? I mean, I'm going to guess the
- 19:27Dominican teams can be pretty good.
- 19:29Yeah, right. They'll be pretty good.
- 19:30But these guys, my good God, where's their weakness anyways?
- 19:35When is that March? I think it's March.
- 19:37I'm I'm out on baseball. 12. No.
- 19:41Like MLB baseball? Yeah, what?
- 19:44What's there to be excited about?
- 19:47Well, you're a Twins fan, right? Yeah, your Twins fan.
- 19:52It's going to take a lot of coercing to get me excited about
- 19:55baseball this year and probably next year, likely the year
- 19:59after. And then at that point, maybe
- 20:01the rebuild will be happening and they'll start to see some
- 20:03fruits of the labor. But this is the reality.
- 20:06And you live in the haves category.
- 20:08I know you, Blue Jays. Oh, they get left at the altar
- 20:10all the time. Come on.
- 20:11What? They have the third fourth
- 20:13biggest payroll in baseball last year.
- 20:16Was it that big? Yeah.
- 20:17It was huge. And there and maybe Kyle Tucker
- 20:19signs today. They very well could get that.
- 20:22Yeah, You live in a different category than I do than White
- 20:25Sox fans do, than Brewers fans do.
- 20:28No, they've been successful. Yeah, no, they have.
- 20:30They've got there, but I'm able to finish the deal.
- 20:33And the new reality that is going to be hitting Cardinal
- 20:35fans now? Oh my God.
- 20:36See, they're. Well, here's something that'll
- 20:38interest you When it comes to baseball, win totals are out.
- 20:41Oh yeah, and the Cardinals have the lowest win total in the
- 20:45mayor in the in the National League Central.
- 20:46Not, not surprised. Not the Reds or the Pirates.
- 20:49The red birds. Reds made a run last year at the
- 20:52end of the year we saw the Pirates at times show a little
- 20:54bit of hope and of course Skins at the headliner out of that
- 20:57group. Not surprised by it one little
- 20:59bit. All right, take your time out.
- 21:01We'll come back. We'll talk to Dave syndicate,
- 21:03Green Bay Packers, zonecoverage.com.
- 21:05But he's in Indiana grad pick his brain on that as well.
- 21:09Miller and Condon talking sports with you on the Iowa Sports
- 21:12Radio Network. By 1:30, Miller in Condon, Iowa
- 21:26Sports Radio Network, We're with you until the top of the hour.
- 21:30Coming up next off the bench, Sean Roberts, Lucas Strain until
- 21:355:00 Will Dave Sinican covers the Green Bay Packers has for
- 21:37decades. zonecoverage.com KFAN Packer preview on Sunday
- 21:43mornings also does this Saturday show and he's in Indiana grad.
- 21:46So we're going to double dip him on that.
- 21:48But Dave Trenton can thank you for coming on.
- 21:50I want to just put a bow on the Packer season.
- 21:53I I just you mean I go to the the first half of that football
- 21:56game. Green Bay just dominated with
- 21:58the exception of McManus missing at the end of the half after
- 22:01he'd made one and Johnson did get a a time out.
- 22:04So Mike made him kick again and it wasn't good.
- 22:07But I just, I, I can't get over the the tale of two halves and
- 22:11how bad it was offensively for Green Bay when they came out in
- 22:14the second-half. Three and out, three and out,
- 22:16one first down, punt, 3 and out. I can't get over how the switch
- 22:21flipped as quick as it did. Yeah, you're not alone, Ken.
- 22:27These are games I typically like to rewatch, and I chose not to
- 22:30even put my eyes on that second-half again because, yeah,
- 22:33it was absolutely stunning. And you know, on one hand, kudos
- 22:36to Dennis Salad and that defense making adjustments and bottling
- 22:40up the one game and then mucking things up.
- 22:42But man, the Packers did themselves no favors once again.
- 22:46And yeah, these, these playoff implosions are happening at a
- 22:50rate that is not healthy for Packer fans.
- 22:54It was ugly. Yeah, it was ugly on on all
- 22:57counts, surrendering 25 points in the fourth quarter of a
- 23:00playoff game. Yeah, you lost Edger and Cooper,
- 23:03who was having a career day. And you know, the Bears lose TJ
- 23:07Edwards and they get better. Green Bay loses Edger and Cooper
- 23:10and completely collapsed. So there's a lot of questions to
- 23:13be answered, and the organization is obviously
- 23:15working their way through the biggest one.
- 23:18But yeah, I didn't see that second-half coming.
- 23:21For Bears fans, 30 years they've been waiting to get Green Bay
- 23:25good. And I know it had to.
- 23:26I feel awfully good. But yeah, we're shaking our
- 23:28heads over here. When you look at what happened,
- 23:32the three and outs, what three of the first four drives, they
- 23:34went three and out I think 5 plays on the other one of those,
- 23:37it just, it was not good obviously.
- 23:40Does that just go to Lafleur? Is it the staff?
- 23:42How much goes to love? I mean, when you look back at
- 23:44that and just the way that the Bears changed, started applying
- 23:47more pressure, how much blame needs to go to the head coach,
- 23:49slash play caller and Lafleur? Yeah.
- 23:52I mean, ultimately, I think it is his job to figure it out.
- 23:55You know, if it the Bears made adjustments to correct what they
- 23:59were doing wrong in the run game in particular because Jordan
- 24:02Jacobs looked like, you know, early season Jacobs in the first
- 24:05half, he looked like he had all of his legs back.
- 24:08And that's the key to the Stackers offense.
- 24:10And when they they figured things out defensively and
- 24:13Lafleur didn't have a counter, Yeah, it's absolutely starts
- 24:17with him. You know, Green Bay lost their
- 24:19center Shawn Ryan at some point early in that game and not make
- 24:24a monk is coming in who's never played a game and he's got to
- 24:27make the calls. It certainly affected the
- 24:29offensive line. They weren't up for it.
- 24:31Not having Zach. Tom was a big loss heading into
- 24:34that game. When I heard he was inactive, I
- 24:36knew that was going to make things difficult.
- 24:38Green Bay's down, you know, 22 offensive lineman, that other
- 24:41two best guys in Jenkins and Tom and the just isn't there up
- 24:45front. And that was a big problem all
- 24:47season. But this game particularly to
- 24:49me, it does start and end with with Matt Lafleur not finding an
- 24:53answer and not using the clock correctly and really playing
- 24:57into the Bears hands with some of that play calling.
- 24:59Yeah, I like taking shots downfield.
- 25:01That's what the Packers offense is.
- 25:03But man, he he did Ben Johnson a lot of favours by lengthening
- 25:09that fourth quarter enough for the Bears to have enough
- 25:11possessions to steal it. I'm guessing Brandon McManus
- 25:14will never kick as a Packer again, and he shouldn't.
- 25:17He's probably come to the end. He's had a nice career, don't
- 25:19get me wrong, but boy, that was not the the way he wanted to go
- 25:23out and the way Packer fans wanted to see him go out.
- 25:25Speaking of going out, Matt Lafleur, is he going out there?
- 25:28Sounds like they're trying to extend him.
- 25:31Your thoughts on on the Floor with the contract talks
- 25:34apparently going on? Yeah, it's very interesting to
- 25:39see how this plays out because I think, you know, Green Bay would
- 25:42like to extend it maybe on a short 2 year extent.
- 25:45My guess, 2 year extension with the one year left that would
- 25:48give him three seasons, another two before he's a late duck
- 25:51again. It's a tough situation.
- 25:53We know we'd be a top candidate anywhere.
- 25:55His his record is, you know, unassailable, but he's two and
- 25:59three in the playoffs is a favorite.
- 26:01And ultimately as a Packer organization, you have to
- 26:04decide, you know, how how much do we value how great he is at
- 26:09developing his quarterback and his offense?
- 26:11But can he get you over the top in January?
- 26:14Does he have what it takes to, you know, rally his team and get
- 26:17them over the top? And then I think is what they're
- 26:19wrestling with And you pay him top dollar because he was not a
- 26:23highly compensated head coach. So I think the dollars are
- 26:26important. The years are important.
- 26:28I went on record the morning after the game that, you know, I
- 26:32have no problem with that moving on.
- 26:34At this point, you do stay up with a grain of salt because you
- 26:39know, this offense where Jordan Love is becoming, you know, is
- 26:42it the same if Lafleur is not there?
- 26:44I'm I'm not sure, but ultimately I would peruse what might be out
- 26:50there and see if it's time for a new voice.
- 26:53If we don't hear anything in the next 4872 hours, I'll be really
- 26:57surprised if he does come back. Ultimately you're going to lose
- 27:00out on guys if you're not in the cycle, so I think we'll go
- 27:04pretty quickly if they get a deal done.
- 27:06You know, one thing I mentioned on Monday is we know
- 27:09organizations obviously that have some woes come playoff
- 27:11time. Our rivals, the Vikings for both
- 27:14of us certainly know it even worse than we do.
- 27:16But yeah, the Packers have two Super Bowls during the last 30
- 27:19years. However, only one with Farf,
- 27:22only one with Rodgers. And you look through some of
- 27:24these playoff losses Saturday night, the latest example among
- 27:28them. But there's so many of them.
- 27:292015 NFC title game on the 4th and 26th, giving up against the
- 27:33Eagles. The Denver Super Bowl going back
- 27:36to the 90s. Yeah, let's go back.
- 27:37There, you like that one a lot there There's you guys got a lot
- 27:41of scar tissue. Yeah, you got 2 Super Bowls, but
- 27:43boy, there is a lot of tough losses for this organization in
- 27:46playoffs. Yeah, I mean, the Seattle one in
- 27:492014 is probably the ugliest and one that, you know, doesn't get
- 27:53thought of a lot. But for me, I was in the press
- 27:55box was the last game with fire of his quarterback against the
- 27:58Giants, where they were the one seed on a freezing night of
- 28:01Lambeau and lost the game in overtime.
- 28:04And at that point, you're thinking, well, that's the end
- 28:06of the fire of era. Are the Packers in purgatory now
- 28:09for the next two decades? You know, obviously not knowing
- 28:11what was to come. But, yeah, there's been a ton of
- 28:14it. I get that a lot from Viking
- 28:16fans. Congratulations, 30 years of
- 28:19Hall of Fame quarterbacks. You have two Super Bowls.
- 28:22I would sign up for that. Tell me up front I would take
- 28:26it. Drew Brees won one with the
- 28:28Saints. Peyton Manning won one with the
- 28:30Colts. It's not automatic when you have
- 28:33a Hall of Fame quarterback that you're guaranteed multiple Super
- 28:36Bowls. But yeah, the way some of those
- 28:38have gone down the the Tampa Bay game with Brady, where we're
- 28:42Green Bay just went into a fetal position and didn't deliver the
- 28:45knockout punch, Another knock against Lafleur in a key spot.
- 28:49Yeah, it is difficult because you like to dream about, man
- 28:53Aaron Rodgers probably should have won two or three of these
- 28:55things. And if not?
- 28:56For. Defense, special teams or weird?
- 29:00He probably would have, but I don't know, guys, I, I've been
- 29:04fortunate enough to be at both of those Packers Super Bowl
- 29:06wins. That's going to sustain me for a
- 29:08long time. I, I'm greedy like everybody.
- 29:11But that those were two nights I'll never forget.
- 29:13And, you know, I still like the fact that this is an
- 29:16organization that year in year out believes it can compete for
- 29:19Super Bowls and generally is playing in January.
- 29:22And that's, that's pretty fun as a Packer fan, you know, watching
- 29:25football. Yeah, no, no doubt about that.
- 29:27We'll get to your Indiana, your alma mater coming up here.
- 29:30I just, I just have one since I open the door with Aaron
- 29:33Rodgers. He said his name.
- 29:34Does it look to you like he's done, Dave?
- 29:37I mean, you went through it, that Willie or won't he?
- 29:39It's, I mean, it's Father Time catches up with everybody,
- 29:42seemingly. It seems like it's caught up
- 29:43with him. Is he done?
- 29:46I think he's done. I say that because it's really
- 29:48strange that Minnesota still might be a team that one more
- 29:52year for McCarthy to learn. And here comes Aaron Rodgers,
- 29:56who reportedly made it very clear he would have loved to
- 29:58have played here in 2025. If they can convince him to give
- 30:03it one more go, I wouldn't be shocked.
- 30:04But I can't think of another place, another situation that
- 30:08would fit everything that Aaron Rodgers would want.
- 30:11To me, he took his team to a division title, to a playoff
- 30:14game and played above average football.
- 30:17Feels like the right time to bow out.
- 30:19My guess is he does, but if he goes anywhere I'd just be the
- 30:23twin. Cities.
- 30:23No, I'm glad you brought that up.
- 30:24We can milk that for a few weeks.
- 30:27Absolutely good. Stuff.
- 30:28Now, what would sting more? What happened Saturday night
- 30:31against the Bears or Indiana on the precipice of a national
- 30:35championship? Falling.
- 30:36Going to Miami. Well, it's funny, last week at
- 30:40this time I said to myself that only one in my teams could win
- 30:44which which would I prefer? And in a heartbeat to my head,
- 30:47it was Indiana. Because this story is just so
- 30:50remarkable. And you know, Green Bay had
- 30:52hopes, but the dreams of a Super Bowl seemed a bit far fetched
- 30:55with all the injuries. What Indiana's doing is just
- 30:57been obviously remarkable and for someone that, you know, was
- 31:01in school there 40 years ago and has put two kids through there
- 31:04and have seen a lot of bad football over the years.
- 31:06When or so and Sam Whites were coaching when I was there to
- 31:11early, you know, ball games the last four or five years before
- 31:15Signetti showed up where nobody was in the stands against teams
- 31:18like Charlotte, it's remarkable where they are.
- 31:22So, yeah, you know, it was certainly hurt Monday night.
- 31:25I wouldn't be completely devastated that what this team
- 31:28has accomplished the last two weeks in just routing Bama,
- 31:32beating Ohio State, Bama and then of course, last week.
- 31:36It's just crazy. Yeah, it would be terrible.
- 31:39You'd lose to Miami in their home stadium.
- 31:41And but no, I would not be broken hearted.
- 31:43This this story has been just so fun to watch from a guy that
- 31:47went there that I'll take whatever happens Monday.
- 31:50But that said, there's no way Miami's beating Indiana Monday
- 31:53night. Guys, who we kidding?
- 31:54Yeah, no, I saw some of the prices, $847 to park your car,
- 32:00not to get in the game, to park your car.
- 32:02It's unbelievable. Dave, as always, brother, thanks
- 32:04for what you do for us all year long.
- 32:06Obviously, with the draft coming up and as we always do the
- 32:09Friday before the Super Bowl, we gather our football voices to
- 32:12get their opinion on this year's Super Bowl 60.
- 32:15Dave, we'll talk to you at that point.
- 32:17Thanks for coming on as always. Dave said it could.
- 32:19Good luck to your alma mater on Monday night.
- 32:22Appreciate you guys, talk to you soon.
- 32:24Yep, good to talk to you, Dave. sinicanzonecoverage.com and does
- 32:27weekends on KFAN up in the Twin Cities, doing that for 30 years.
- 32:32All right, Trent's plays of the day are coming up next.
- 32:37Not a lot of great basketball. There's basketball and you can
- 32:39bet on it, So I'm guessing you will.
- 32:41Women's basketball tonight's got my eye.
- 32:43Have you which which game you're looking at?
- 32:46Got pull up Big 10 games, including Iowa.
- 32:49Oregon is on the list and Michigan State hosting Nebraska.
- 32:53OK, take a peek at both of those games.
- 32:54So some good Big 10 women's basketball at that.
- 32:57And Tracy Bay at the men's side. Not a whole lot there, a lot of
- 33:00colonial action. Yeah, in both.
- 33:03You posted circus sports. You retweeted circus sports.
- 33:06Put up the Penn State Iowa numbers.
- 33:09But for the wrestling duel, yeah.
- 33:11For the duel, Yeah, yeah. It is 25.
- 33:15I was a 25 point under. Do you remember what it was last
- 33:17year? I don't offhand.
- 33:19I remember the first time that they did this, four years ago
- 33:22now, Five years ago, maybe you were gone.
- 33:25You were behind it. You were the one that asked Palm
- 33:28to get it going at Benson. And Cody Goodwin was sitting in
- 33:31for you that day. And so Cody and I, we're talking
- 33:33a little bit about the duel, what I was going to take.
- 33:35And it was at that time kind of a toss up.
- 33:38And so I just came up with the idea, well, why they can't?
- 33:40They put a line on it. So made the call out to Vegas,
- 33:43talked to the guys out there and they said, yeah, we'll try it.
- 33:46And they put a many line there. My favorite part of that story
- 33:48though, was then that Friday night.
- 33:50It was obviously not a huge decision for them, but it was
- 33:54thousands of dollars on one side.
- 33:56And at Circa they put college wrestling for the first time up
- 33:59on the big board. That was one of the smaller
- 34:01corners, but sure, it was up there.
- 34:03And apparently Derek was cheering on Penn State because
- 34:06it was like a $10,000 decision for them.
- 34:08They needed the Nittany Lions to get it done.
- 34:10Because it was on the Iowa app. They here's what did you hear
- 34:12what they did on the over the weekend.
- 34:14They had a 2, they had a 1,000,000 1/2 dollars bet on
- 34:18Green Bay and they had a one of the Saturday games went their
- 34:23way. Who played Saturday?
- 34:25That God? Panthers.
- 34:28No. That was Saturday and the Bears
- 34:31were Saturday. So what about a Sunday game?
- 34:34Sunday. Game. 49ers Eagles.
- 34:36What was the other one? Jaguars.
- 34:38Bills. That's what it was they did.
- 34:40Somebody bet a 1.4 million on the Jags and 1.5 million on the
- 34:45Packers. But they said they broke even
- 34:50because they got crushed on Indiana on Friday night.
- 34:53Oh, really? Yes, They could not get a bet on
- 34:55Ole Miss, Miller and Condon back to wrap things up.
- 34:58Mike Palm, by the way, will join us this time tomorrow.
- 35:00We'll be wrapping up our conversation with our friend
- 35:02Mike Palm, VP of operations at Circa Sports.
- 35:05Download the Circa app anywhere in the state of Iowa.
- 35:08Fund it. You'll be glad you did. 8 out of
- 35:10nine, I got 10 * 4 out of five, you will get the best price at
- 35:14Circa, Miller and Condon. Back with our final segment,
- 35:17it's the Iowa Sports Radio Network.
- 35:19I'm Miller Condon. Welcome back, Iowa Sports Radio
- 35:22Network. Our final segment.
- 35:24Shame on us, should at least mention this.
- 35:26In the first segment of our shows, we bounce around sports.
- 35:29Nice win for Drake. Yesterday you come back down
- 35:311617, whatever it was. Nice win for Drake.
- 35:34Needed that. They did needed that.
- 35:36They're going to be, you know, probably when the season's all
- 35:40said and done, they'll be probably pretty close to each
- 35:42other in the standings and and our guy Shetler did it again,
- 35:46right. Foul trouble didn't matter.
- 35:47Double double for Shetler 19 and 11.
- 35:50I asked Sean. He was in the studio before he
- 35:53got in this morning. I asked what's going on here?
- 35:55What's the difference in playing time?
- 35:57Oh yeah, give him a chance. Suppose that right?
- 35:59And he is earning those minutes and putting up those numbers.
- 36:03All right, what are you going to bet on tonight, Trent?
- 36:06It's a great question because you're right, it is not a good
- 36:09sleep I. Looked at the next Thursday.
- 36:11There's one Big 10 game Penn State, Wisconsin.
- 36:14So they'll get back on the train that direction and get back in
- 36:17there tonight. I have one college basketball
- 36:20game on the men's side. It is out in the WCC.
- 36:23No, it's not even the WCC. It's out in the not the WAC.
- 36:27It is the big W. There we go.
- 36:30You remember that Cal San Diego team from a year ago?
- 36:32Really fun. Played Michigan in the first
- 36:34round. They're kind of buzz team.
- 36:35They were what, 28 and 2, something like that.
- 36:37They're pretty good this year. Not as good as last year's team,
- 36:39but pretty good. We're going to lay it tonight
- 36:41against Northridge. They're laying 7 1/2, my only
- 36:44play in that one, 9:00 on ESPN. Plus two women's games, giving
- 36:48Nebraska the points tonight on the women's side against
- 36:51Michigan State. I see this is an incredibly even
- 36:53game, really tight. Michigan State is 16 and 1.
- 36:56Nebraska hit the skids a bit. They've lost three out of four.
- 36:58However, they played really good teams in that stretch, too.
- 37:01I think it's going to be down to the wire.
- 37:02Really good game there. I'll grab the 5 1/2 with the
- 37:05Huskers and I'll lay it tonight with the Hawkeye women against
- 37:07Oregon, laying 5 1/2 against the Ducks.
- 37:10Oregon kind of silver. This is a group of teams that
- 37:13are all very similar, all four of these teams.
- 37:15And I'm going to grab the home team here.
- 37:17The Hawkeyes back at Carver after not playing well last
- 37:19week. Northwestern's awful.
- 37:21They struggled with the wild. Sure did.
- 37:23Indiana saw. Enough a bunch of that game.
- 37:26Not nearly as good as they've been in the past.
- 37:28They out a way to get it done with that big Big 10 network.
- 37:32Have the game, FS1 and a late tip off at Carver tonight. 8:00
- 37:38Juiced up crowd ready to go there.
- 37:40You go. Full throat.
- 37:41Yeah, absolutely. Got a little time for a couple
- 37:43extra pints before you make your way over at the Wig and Pen.
- 37:46Yeah, yeah, we'll see what the environment's like tonight, but
- 37:498:00 on FS1. All right, I'm watching puck
- 37:53tonight. I'm watching the.
- 37:54Wild. They're still playing that
- 37:55sport. Are are they going to play in
- 37:56the Olympics this year? Yes, I believe they've solved
- 37:59the issues. The dressing rooms will not be
- 38:01ready. The concessions will not be
- 38:02ready. But the ice is past the mustard
- 38:05and so they are going to play. Yeah, I'm going to watch the
- 38:08I've seen, sat down and watched my squad with nothing to no
- 38:11football to watch, no Iowa, no Iowa State to watch.
- 38:15I'm going to watch it tonight and the Wild are good.
- 38:18I saw did your Jets win the last time out?
- 38:20They've won three in a row. Lookout.
- 38:22Yes. Here they come.
- 38:23I hope not because they need to rebuild and mock draft season.
- 38:27No, don't do that the way you. Same thing with the Broncos.
- 38:30It drives me crazy. Well, it's going to drive you
- 38:32crazy for five more months and then I'm out of here.
- 38:35But you're a fan. How?
- 38:36How you can hope? For they have no shot.
- 38:39You would have said the ultimate prize.
- 38:40The last time the Saint Louis Blues won a title, you would
- 38:42have said the exact same thing at this exact same.
- 38:45Not because I'm not a Blues fan. I don't care.
- 38:47Right, But their fans were saying the same thing.
- 38:50What did they do? They got in an incredible.
- 38:52And hockey? Just probable.
- 38:55Just get in and I don't think they will get in.
- 38:57But anyways, if they do, I'll be cheering like a madman.
- 39:00But I don't see that happening. I hear that there's another show
- 39:04coming up after us and it's off the bench.
- 39:06Oh yeah, with Darryl and Gary. Darryl and Gary and Darryl and
- 39:09Gary are trying to run us down. I think we're up 4.
- 39:12Is that what it is, 3 or 4? Well, how about you pick up the
- 39:14pace a little? Bit God have I sucked.
- 39:17You are 6 and 14 the last. Four weeks, though.
- 39:20Is it that bad? That's.
- 39:21That's Trancona 20. To say the same thing, get a
- 39:23little shot at you, all right, that's going to do it for us.
- 39:26We appreciate you being here. We're going to be back again
- 39:29tomorrow from noon until 2. That's where we talk sports with
- 39:32you on the I.
