Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: So I want to start with, firstly, huge congrats on
- 0:02Speaker 1: your debut EPSCHC. You guys have been playing music since 2024,
- 0:09Speaker 1: and I was wondering how does it feel to finally
- 0:11Speaker 1: have these tracks out after playing them for so long? Obviously,
- 0:15Speaker 1: recording this interview before they're out, but how do you
- 0:17Speaker 1: think it will feel, or how are you feeling having
- 0:19Speaker 1: them at least recorded and soon.
- 0:21Speaker 2: To be out?
- 0:22Speaker 3: Well, I guess I'll start. Personally, I'm really excited.
- 0:26Speaker 4: I know I'm newish to the band we're talking about
- 0:29Speaker 4: on the way, over um it's definitely like joining the
- 0:33Speaker 4: band later seeing that the the hype is real i
- 0:36Speaker 4: guess um and people are keen so it's like really
- 0:39Speaker 4: excited it's exciting to uh get it out for them
- 0:43Speaker 4: and get things ready get things going.
- 0:44Speaker 1: Does it feel scary at all or are you kind
- 0:47Speaker 1: of just like keen to get it out.
- 0:49Speaker 4: It's a little like it's a little nerve-wracking um but
- 0:52Speaker 4: i think for me personally the excitement just like outweighs
- 0:56Speaker 4: the nerves.
- 0:56Speaker 3: Yeah i think I think I'm the same.
- 0:59Speaker 5: Like I sort of go through stages of, um, it's
- 1:04Speaker 5: hard as a vocalist, like hearing your own voice over
- 1:07Speaker 5: and over again.
- 1:08Speaker 3: Um, and it gets to a point where.
- 1:10Speaker 5: Now I struggle to listen to like the final, the
- 1:16Speaker 5: final recording and mix and stuff.
- 1:17Speaker 3: Cause I'm like, Oh, I'm sick. It's so sick of
- 1:19Speaker 3: hearing my own voice.
- 1:19Speaker 5: So I'm excited to see how other people hear it
- 1:23Speaker 5: and what they take from it. And I'm just so
- 1:26Speaker 5: excited to get it out, you know, after like, so
- 1:28Speaker 5: long and, you know, having just little setbacks and to
- 1:35Speaker 5: get in and finally get it out is so cool.
- 1:37Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 1:40Speaker 1: I feel like I've been wanting to interview guys for
- 1:42Speaker 1: ages and I was like, wait, they don't music out.
- 1:45Speaker 1: I can't believe this, but this is, we're finally here, but, um,
- 1:49Speaker 1: and you're releasing it through fortify records. And I was
- 1:52Speaker 1: wondering if you could tell me a little bit about
- 1:54Speaker 1: like the writing and recording process, um, for the EP.
- 1:58Speaker 6: Let's talk about this for a bit um but yeah
- 2:01Speaker 6: shout out harry um he drums in scram and omong
- 2:05Speaker 6: and he's um been a big well he basically like
- 2:09Speaker 6: produced our ep for us and recorded everything and mixed
- 2:13Speaker 6: it all himself and um it's been really fun and
- 2:17Speaker 6: a big learning curve because it's like three out of
- 2:20Speaker 6: five of our first band um so there's a lot
- 2:24Speaker 6: of stuff we didn't know um And yeah, it's just
- 2:27Speaker 6: been really fun. This sort of style that we are
- 2:30Speaker 6: was a bit different to what Harry's used to recording.
- 2:33Speaker 6: And I think there was, um, we had a lot
- 2:34Speaker 6: of fun, me and Harry, like sort of talking about what,
- 2:39Speaker 6: what parts to keep raw and what parts to keep
- 2:41Speaker 6: kind of clean on. Yeah.
- 2:43Speaker 3: It's pretty, pretty fun.
- 2:45Speaker 1: Um, yeah.
- 2:46Speaker 2: But yeah, I think that's like the beauty of recording
- 2:49Speaker 2: is that like you do get to learn and that
- 2:51Speaker 2: like you all put in different inputs and different influences.
- 2:56Speaker 2: Like a lot of us have come from different backgrounds
- 2:58Speaker 2: of like even just personal taste. And as well as
- 3:02Speaker 2: Harry is just such a lovely guy. So he made
- 3:06Speaker 2: like the recording process like really comfortable and really easy.
- 3:10Speaker 2: And I think that's like something that I think it's
- 3:13Speaker 2: important to mention is like, yes, it's scary that we're
- 3:16Speaker 2: releasing music, but it's also not because like the community
- 3:19Speaker 2: and hardcore is just unreal. Like everyone just backs each other.
- 3:23Speaker 2: Everyone wants to support each other. Everyone wants to uplift
- 3:25Speaker 2: each other. So it's, like, yes, it's nerve-wracking, but it's, like,
- 3:29Speaker 2: almost more, like, excitement because you know that, like, everyone will, like,
- 3:33Speaker 2: rally together and support each other.
- 3:35Speaker 3: Yeah, 100%.
- 3:36Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 3:37Speaker 6: And also shout out Nick from Fortify Records, obviously, because
- 3:41Speaker 6: she's kind of been the one who's pushed us. Like,
- 3:47Speaker 6: she wasn't, like, you know, hounding us all the time.
- 3:50Speaker 4: Not all the time.
- 3:51Speaker 3: But, you know.
- 3:52Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 3:53Speaker 6: Encouraging us and getting us to honestly like exactly what
- 3:57Speaker 6: we've needed and she's like we played with um her
- 4:01Speaker 6: band one of her bands like in may last year
- 4:04Speaker 6: and she's just sort of backed us ever since and
- 4:08Speaker 6: kind of had dibs on putting us out it's.
- 4:12Speaker 5: Crazy because i think talking to nick she said that
- 4:16Speaker 5: we were actually the first band that she asked about
- 4:20Speaker 5: putting out on fortify records and.
- 4:23Speaker 7: I'm so grateful for Nick to not give up hope
- 4:34Speaker 7: on us and the right level of encouragement and also
- 4:37Speaker 7: just accountability of getting us in and encouraging us to
- 4:43Speaker 7: get it done and just organising everything with this release.
- 4:47Speaker 5: And merch and Um, some shows and just so cool.
- 4:53Speaker 3: So awesome. Oh yeah.
- 4:55Speaker 4: Support person as well. I think, um, as for a band,
- 5:00Speaker 4: but also on like personal levels, I think we've all
- 5:02Speaker 4: made like a bit of a connection with Nick.
- 5:05Speaker 3: Um, and a really good support person in the scene
- 5:07Speaker 3: for us all.
- 5:08Speaker 5: I think.
- 5:08Speaker 3: Yeah, for sure.
- 5:09Speaker 1: It's really interesting when you get into that, like recording process,
- 5:12Speaker 1: it brings like all these third party members in. It's
- 5:15Speaker 1: really nice to like have that reassurance and have that
- 5:18Speaker 1: validation and support. And then also like obviously create a
- 5:21Speaker 1: space where you're able to be vulnerable and you're able
- 5:24Speaker 1: to create because it is so personal and it is
- 5:26Speaker 1: so difficult. So that's awesome to hear that you guys
- 5:28Speaker 1: had a great experience. And I saw you play last year.
- 5:33Speaker 1: I think it was last year with Scorn. It was
- 5:35Speaker 1: like ages ago. But I wanted to talk a little
- 5:39Speaker 1: bit about your live show. And obviously there's like a
- 5:41Speaker 1: physicality to hardcore that you don't get in every genre.
- 5:44Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 5:45Speaker 1: And I was wondering if it takes a lot for
- 5:46Speaker 1: you to get into that kind of like performance mindset
- 5:49Speaker 1: when you're performing?
- 5:52Speaker 3: Oh, yeah.
- 5:54Speaker 5: Yeah, for me, there is definitely a set routine that
- 6:01Speaker 5: I have.
- 6:03Speaker 3: On a day of the show.
- 6:07Speaker 5: But I think that's just the way my mind operates
- 6:09Speaker 5: and being a front person and sort of how you present,
- 6:13Speaker 5: like you're that first person person that people are looking
- 6:17Speaker 5: at so i have to really try and be in
- 6:20Speaker 5: a mindset of yeah energy and performance and.
- 6:29Speaker 3: Saying the right things.
- 6:31Speaker 5: In between songs like i know some people don't plan
- 6:33Speaker 5: it and they just sort of let whatever's going on
- 6:36Speaker 5: their mind just sort of come out and i think
- 6:38Speaker 5: that's good go with the flow but i like to
- 6:40Speaker 5: have a little bit of.
- 6:41Speaker 3: A set thing and um Yeah, the physicality is a
- 6:45Speaker 3: big thing. And I think it's.
- 6:48Speaker 5: A front person, especially I know for me, it has
- 6:52Speaker 5: a lot of effect on how people react to the music.
- 6:55Speaker 5: Like I know sometimes you go and see a band
- 6:59Speaker 5: and their front person is just, if it doesn't look
- 7:01Speaker 5: like they want to be there, then, you know, it
- 7:04Speaker 5: doesn't really matter how talented they are. It's just not
- 7:07Speaker 5: going to hit as well. And I know a lot
- 7:09Speaker 5: of the front people that I look up to, they
- 7:11Speaker 5: have that energy, they have that mindset, they have that,
- 7:15Speaker 5: that look of like having fun, they're wanting to be
- 7:19Speaker 5: there while also still conveying important messages. But yeah, in
- 7:25Speaker 5: terms of the day of the show, I'm, I get
- 7:28Speaker 5: really nervous. So like I have to try and eat
- 7:31Speaker 5: as much food as I can before midday of a show.
- 7:33Speaker 3: Otherwise I like coming up a few hours before I
- 7:36Speaker 3: can't eat.
- 7:37Speaker 5: Like I'm, I get nervous and then I get really
- 7:40Speaker 5: like antsy and hyped up and just kind of like
- 7:45Speaker 5: a lot of people have commented on it. I kind
- 7:46Speaker 5: of just pace around and move around a lot before
- 7:50Speaker 5: a show. And then on the stage as well, it's,
- 7:54Speaker 5: it's yeah, it's definitely physically demanding as well. If you
- 7:58Speaker 5: want to move around a lot and sing and maintain
- 8:00Speaker 5: a voice.
- 8:02Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 8:03Speaker 1: Yeah. All of the spectrum of emotion sounds like every
- 8:07Speaker 1: single one.
- 8:09Speaker 3: What about you guys?
- 8:11Speaker 1: Do you have kind of like a, a routine that
- 8:13Speaker 1: you go through?
- 8:14Speaker 4: I think, um, Ben actually inspired me a little bit
- 8:17Speaker 4: with a routine. I, I used to go to gigs, just, um, like,
- 8:22Speaker 4: you know, just, I just show up and do it.
- 8:25Speaker 4: And then, uh, I saw Ben a couple of times,
- 8:27Speaker 4: just like take a breather before the set.
- 8:29Speaker 3: And I was like, well, that's a really good idea. And, um,
- 8:32Speaker 3: it just, I don't know.
- 8:33Speaker 4: There's something about just having 10 minutes, fresh air, walking
- 8:36Speaker 4: around outside before set just gets me in that physicality, um,
- 8:41Speaker 4: gets me in the mindset. like, gets me a bit
- 8:43Speaker 4: more revved up, ready for the show.
- 8:46Speaker 3: So thanks, Ben.
- 8:47Speaker 1: Shout out.
- 8:47Speaker 3: That's okay.
- 8:49Speaker 2: No, yeah, Ben definitely has saved me at times that I'm, like,
- 8:53Speaker 2: feeling nervous, and then he'll just, like, get out there and, like,
- 8:56Speaker 2: just give it his all, and I'm like, okay, cool, like,
- 8:58Speaker 2: we're all in this together, like, we got this.
- 9:00Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 9:01Speaker 2: And I think for me, like, I don't know if
- 9:04Speaker 2: Rosie has the same thing, but I do try to bring, like,
- 9:08Speaker 2: energy um when I'm playing just because obviously like hardcore
- 9:12Speaker 2: is a male dominated scene and I think it is
- 9:15Speaker 2: like really important to see like all different types of
- 9:19Speaker 2: people on stage and bring that energy just to make
- 9:21Speaker 2: people feel more comfortable because I know for sure like
- 9:24Speaker 2: I've been like in crowds and like the times that
- 9:28Speaker 2: I've felt comfortable like trying them off like two-step is
- 9:30Speaker 2: because like there's been a woman on stage it's like
- 9:33Speaker 2: you know really empowering and like you know like all
- 9:35Speaker 2: the women kind of like come together and like um
- 9:39Speaker 2: yeah like support each other um so I think that's
- 9:41Speaker 2: like a part of the reason why I like try
- 9:43Speaker 2: to bring an energy and then I guess it's also
- 9:45Speaker 2: like vice versa like I'll go out there and like
- 9:48Speaker 2: when you see your friends like you know showing support
- 9:51Speaker 2: and like giving it their order like be like you
- 9:54Speaker 2: know like I'm proud of you guys then you're like
- 9:56Speaker 2: oh thanks and then you get hyped and it's just
- 9:58Speaker 2: nice and yeah.
- 10:00Speaker 1: Yeah, I love that. I feel like I definitely appreciate that. Obviously,
- 10:05Speaker 1: I find a hardcore mosh. Well, not obviously, but I
- 10:07Speaker 1: find a hardcore mosh quite scary. And yeah, it is
- 10:11Speaker 1: awesome to have a woman on stage doing that. And
- 10:13Speaker 1: it is awesome that you guys have each other as
- 10:15Speaker 1: well to kind of bring that energy and hype each
- 10:17Speaker 1: other up. And I wanted to talk about the sunny
- 10:21Speaker 1: coast cause that's where you guys are from. And you've
- 10:24Speaker 1: played all over the country. And I was wondering how
- 10:27Speaker 1: the sunny coast hardcore scene like differs from the other
- 10:31Speaker 1: hardcore scenes around Australia and like what, I guess what,
- 10:34Speaker 1: what is unique about it and what you appreciate about it.
- 10:37Speaker 5: Wow. I think everyone across all scenes will always say
- 10:42Speaker 5: that there is something different and that's true, right?
- 10:46Speaker 3: Like of course, city to city, Place to place, scenes are.
- 10:51Speaker 5: Going to vary in terms of, you know, sound and
- 10:56Speaker 5: I guess, you know, attitudes.
- 10:59Speaker 3: But I think the thing that really makes Sunshine Coast.
- 11:02Speaker 5: And like Nambour more specifically unique is the fact that Nambour,
- 11:11Speaker 5: I love Nambour so much and I love it because
- 11:13Speaker 5: it still is a bit of a shithole. And I
- 11:17Speaker 5: don't mean that in a disrespectful way. I mean that
- 11:19Speaker 5: in the best way possible. And because.
- 11:22Speaker 3: It allows people in an area like the Sunshine Coast, which.
- 11:28Speaker 5: Is quite, you know, in part still quite conservative, it
- 11:35Speaker 5: allows people to come to something that's more left of
- 11:38Speaker 5: field and still express themselves. And I think as well,
- 11:42Speaker 5: there's the Sunshine Coast hardcore scene, but then right next
- 11:45Speaker 5: to it, is a scene that Borgie from Bad Habits
- 11:50Speaker 5: has really helped cultivate over the last few years of
- 11:52Speaker 5: just like, there are people that no matter the type
- 11:55Speaker 5: of music, whether it's hardcore show, punk show, there's a
- 11:58Speaker 5: core group of people that will come to every single
- 12:01Speaker 5: show that is on in Nambour. And that's a credit
- 12:04Speaker 5: to Borg. You know, it's not just a lot of times,
- 12:10Speaker 5: you know, it's not just hardcore people. It'll be hardcore
- 12:13Speaker 5: and punk people will, and metal dudes kind of like
- 12:17Speaker 5: mixing together.
- 12:17Speaker 3: And I think that's really beautiful. And it creates this.
- 12:20Speaker 5: Really nice array of bands. It's not just everyone trying
- 12:27Speaker 5: to make the same sound and make the same scene.
- 12:31Speaker 5: And I think that's so great. And I think that
- 12:33Speaker 5: really does set Nambour apart as well. Like, but to
- 12:40Speaker 5: get to this position now where it's kind of on
- 12:41Speaker 5: the map, like, That was kind of all Cherry a
- 12:45Speaker 5: couple of years ago, putting in so much work with Anti-Vision.
- 12:49Speaker 5: And I sort of seeing that firsthand, you know, from
- 12:53Speaker 5: going to shows in Nambour where there was literally like
- 12:56Speaker 5: six people. Like I remember Electric Chair in Nambour when
- 12:59Speaker 5: I first met Cherry properly. And there was literally like
- 13:02Speaker 5: six people at that show, not including band members.
- 13:05Speaker 3: But, you know, there was like no one there. And
- 13:07Speaker 3: I remember talking to Cherry and being like, oh, we've
- 13:10Speaker 3: got to get like... it'd be so cool to get
- 13:14Speaker 3: like hardcore bands here.
- 13:15Speaker 5: And then, yeah, you know, I, um, I think it
- 13:19Speaker 5: was after seeing terror at soul bar, um, and soul
- 13:22Speaker 5: bars now shot. I remember he, Terry saying to me like, Oh,
- 13:26Speaker 5: how cool would it be to get like, you know,
- 13:28Speaker 5: look back on posters and stuff and see Nambour on
- 13:31Speaker 5: the posters of like an international band.
- 13:33Speaker 3: And now it's happened. And it's like, it just keeps
- 13:36Speaker 3: growing and growing and it's really cool, you know?
- 13:38Speaker 5: And it's testament everyone that sort of, willingness to work
- 13:42Speaker 5: hard and it still happens now you know like you
- 13:45Speaker 5: with guerrilla bookings and like Kalani and Bowie and stuff
- 13:50Speaker 5: um I see it you know the hard extra bit
- 13:53Speaker 5: of hard work you have to do to encourage bands
- 13:55Speaker 5: to come up here rather than not just play Brisbane
- 13:58Speaker 5: but all that started with anti-vision and bad habit records
- 14:03Speaker 5: so props to them always oh yeah yeah.
- 14:06Speaker 1: I feel like yeah the hardest working kind of like
- 14:09Speaker 1: independent promoters are always in those kinds of areas. Like
- 14:13Speaker 1: there's loads in the Northern rivers as well that I
- 14:15Speaker 1: would say kind of the same. And I, I love
- 14:18Speaker 1: to hear that you're bringing all of kind of the
- 14:20Speaker 1: heavier music together, even though it's all different genres and
- 14:23Speaker 1: that's lovely to hear. It's turning into a space for that.
- 14:28Speaker 1: And kind of on the same sort of vein, you've
- 14:30Speaker 1: had the opportunity to play alongside alongside like a bunch
- 14:34Speaker 1: of huge names that in hardcore is there a particular
- 14:37Speaker 1: band that you guys have toured with or played with
- 14:39Speaker 1: that has changed the way that you think about human
- 14:42Speaker 1: condition or that you've possibly learned from or chatted about
- 14:45Speaker 1: something and really took it with you.
- 14:47Speaker 6: That is like um there wouldn't definitely be like just
- 14:51Speaker 6: one band i feel like we because we all like
- 14:54Speaker 6: different music and our bands inspired by so many different
- 14:57Speaker 6: like sounds that we have so much to learn from
- 15:01Speaker 6: like so many bands we play with but like Obviously
- 15:03Speaker 6: the first band that comes to my mind would be Lowe,
- 15:05Speaker 6: from Yangon. They also represent SCHC, South Periscope. They, Luca
- 15:13Speaker 6: from the bass player from that band, booked our first
- 15:16Speaker 6: little tour. We did at the start of the year.
- 15:20Speaker 3: Yeah, we had no music at all, so.
- 15:22Speaker 2: Yeah, no music at all.
- 15:24Speaker 3: Yeah, to take the chance like that, yeah. Yeah, yeah.
- 15:29Speaker 6: And, yeah, they really just, like, again, like, they kind
- 15:31Speaker 6: of believed in us, and they had seen us play, actually,
- 15:34Speaker 6: at the same show that Nick saw us play, and
- 15:37Speaker 6: they were like, you guys are awesome, like, and they
- 15:39Speaker 6: loved us, and it was just really cool to have them, like,
- 15:42Speaker 6: back us like that, and they made us play second
- 15:45Speaker 6: last every night, even though we were, like, like, I
- 15:49Speaker 6: tried to talk to Dave multiple times, dude, like, I don't, like,
- 15:53Speaker 6: play second last, we have no music yet, and he's like,
- 15:56Speaker 6: I don't care, like, we brought you here and we
- 15:59Speaker 6: had a great like reception from every crowd that that
- 16:03Speaker 6: tour like yeah it was awesome it was uh yeah
- 16:06Speaker 6: really cool and there's like other bands that local bands
- 16:09Speaker 6: that have really helped inspire us to um like wet
- 16:12Speaker 6: work and sick people and um name drop guys.
- 16:17Speaker 3: Yeah i think as well It's so hard. Yeah, it's
- 16:25Speaker 3: so hard to just put it on one band.
- 16:27Speaker 5: But for me personally, that band that has always backed
- 16:31Speaker 5: us and it's wet work, you know, from Brisbane. Just
- 16:35Speaker 5: from the start, everyone in that band has just like
- 16:39Speaker 5: backed us hugely, big time.
- 16:45Speaker 3: Yeah, always been. I find myself constantly when I have
- 16:50Speaker 3: sort of questions.
- 16:50Speaker 5: About, music scenes or just music in general or how
- 16:55Speaker 5: to do something, I find myself going to Lucas, the singer,
- 16:59Speaker 5: or Dylan, the guitarist, just because they have so much
- 17:03Speaker 5: knowledge on everything and are always, you know, so welcoming
- 17:10Speaker 5: and encouraging.
- 17:11Speaker 3: And yeah, and of course, as well.
- 17:14Speaker 5: It's pretty crazy playing with a band like Scram as well, like,
- 17:21Speaker 5: and to have them you know, to be like friends
- 17:25Speaker 5: of ours is pretty crazy considering the, just the traction
- 17:30Speaker 5: they're getting at the moment.
- 17:31Speaker 3: It's, it's one of those things.
- 17:32Speaker 5: It's, I guess it's a beauty of being in a
- 17:35Speaker 5: sort of a more DIY scene. It's like, you can
- 17:38Speaker 5: be listening to these great awesome songs on the daily
- 17:40Speaker 5: and then you kind of remember, Oh, I'm actually like
- 17:42Speaker 5: friends with these people.
- 17:43Speaker 3: That's really crazy. Yeah. Oh, well that's awesome.
- 17:48Speaker 1: I feel like you guys saying that there's not one
- 17:50Speaker 1: band is, is kind of an answer in itself of,
- 17:53Speaker 1: what Emma was coming back to saying earlier was like
