- Lucas: Hei Luna, ready to learn some Norwegian? Luna: Hei Lucas, definitely! What are we learning today? Lucas: Today we're going to talk about distance. Two simple but useful words: nær and langt. Luna: Ooh, that sounds handy. Like for asking if something is close by or far away? Lucas: Exactly. Let's start with nær. It means 'near' or 'close'. Listen: nær. Luna: Nær. Lucas: Good. And langt means 'far'. Langt. Luna: Langt. That one feels a bit more stretched out. Lucas: Now let's put them into sentences. Det er nær. 'It is near.' Det er nær. Luna: Det er nær. Lucas: Perfect. And Det er langt. 'It is far.' Det er langt. Luna: Det er langt. Lucas: You can also ask questions: Er det nær? 'Is it near?' Er det nær? Luna: Er det nær? Lucas: And Er det langt? 'Is it far?' Er det langt? Luna: Er det langt? I can imagine using that when I'm lost. Lucas: Totally. Let's practice a little scene. Imagine you're looking for a bus stop. Luna: Okay. So I ask someone: Unnskyld, er det nær? Lucas: They say: Ja, det er nær. 'Yes, it is near.' Luna: Ah, so I know it's close. And if it's far? Lucas: They might say: Nei, det er langt. 'No, it is far.' Luna: Nei, det er langt. Got it. So I'd need to take a bus. Lucas: Exactly. Now, let's do a quick back and forth. I'll say a sentence, you repeat. Luna: Okay. Lucas: Det er nær. Luna: Det er nær. Lucas: Det er langt. Luna: Det er langt. Lucas: Er det nær? Luna: Er det nær? Lucas: Er det langt? Luna: Er det langt? Lucas: You're doing great. Luna: Okay, there's one near me. So I'd say: Parker er nær. Lucas: Almost! In Norwegian, 'the park' is parken. So: Parken er nær. Luna: Ah, parken er nær. Right, because it's definite. Lucas: Exactly. And if the park is far, you say: Parken er langt. Luna: Parken er langt. That's easy. Lucas: Let's try a question: Er parken nær? Luna: Er parken nær? Lucas: And: Er parken langt? Luna: Er parken langt? Lucas: Great. Now, think of a friend's house. Is it near or far? Luna: My friend Kari's house is pretty close. So: Huset til Kari er nær. Lucas: Perfect. And if I don't know, I could ask: Er huset til Kari langt? Luna: Er huset til Kari langt? That flows nicely. Lucas: Let's do one more round. Det er nær. Luna: Det er nær. Lucas: Det er langt. Luna: Det er langt. Lucas: Er det nær? Luna: Er det nær? Lucas: Er det langt? Luna: Er det langt? Lucas: Fantastic. You've got it. Now whenever you're out and about in Norway, you can ask if places are near or far. Luna: That's so useful. Thanks for this lesson, Lucas. Lucas: You're welcome, Luna. And thank you for learning with us. Practice these phrases and we'll see you next time.
