- 0:00SPEAKER_00: So here's the drink.
- 0:04SPEAKER_00: By the way, that's the name of my new series of opinion pieces.
- 0:07SPEAKER_00: If you hate the name and feel I should be frankly ashamed of myself,
- 0:10SPEAKER_00: head to thegamebusiness.com,
- 0:12SPEAKER_00: click on the story,
- 0:13SPEAKER_00: is Nintendo switched to a legitimate rival to Xbox and PlayStation?
- 0:16And there's a poll at the bottom where you can insist that I
- 0:18change it immediately.
- 0:19SPEAKER_00: On the other side,
- 0:20if you think it's a work of journalistic genius that should be
- 0:22commended and never altered,
- 0:24SPEAKER_00: also head to the same place and vote for me to keep it.
- 0:27SPEAKER_00: The choice is yours.
- 0:29SPEAKER_00: Now, where was I?
- 0:30SPEAKER_00: Oh yes, here's the dream.
- 0:32It feels almost inappropriate to be talking about Nintendo's
- 0:35business strategy at a
- 0:36SPEAKER_00: time like this.
- 0:37SPEAKER_00: The tariffs imposed on Asian countries by the US,
- 0:39the very countries that produce the chips and machines that
- 0:41play our games,
- 0:43SPEAKER_00: feels frankly existential.
- 0:45SPEAKER_00: We just have to hope the various governments reach an agreement or the
- 0:47Entertainment Software Association can make an effective case
- 0:50for our industry.
- 0:52SPEAKER_00: In a time when video game growth is slow to non-existent,
- 0:54SPEAKER_00: this really couldn't come at a worse time.
- 0:57SPEAKER_00: But anyway, Nintendo.
- 1:00I've been caught somewhat off guard by the hysteria around the
- 1:03price of Nintendo Switch 2.
- 1:04SPEAKER_00: The retailers I spoke to,
- 1:06SPEAKER_00: they all thought it was reasonable,
- 1:07SPEAKER_00: the analysts didn't shift their sales estimates,
- 1:09and it was roughly in line with what people were suggesting
- 1:11before the Direct was aired.
- 1:14I've personally spent £430 on the Mario Kart World bundle,
- 1:18although I'd hardly call that cheap.
- 1:19SPEAKER_00: I didn't think it unreasonable.
- 1:21SPEAKER_00: But I guess that's just it with value.
- 1:23SPEAKER_00: It's subjective.
- 1:25£430 for a games console and a game that will likely be a
- 1:28fixture in my household
- 1:29for me and the kids for the next seven years doesn't feel
- 1:32astronomical to me.
- 1:34SPEAKER_00: But someone else may have a very different perspective.
- 1:37SPEAKER_00: I'll give you an example.
- 1:38SPEAKER_00: When Nintendo charged full price for Super Mario 3D All-Stars,
- 1:41SPEAKER_00: do you remember that back in 2020?
- 1:43SPEAKER_00: It was a pretty basic port job done by Nintendo of three old Mario games.
- 1:48personally i saw a product that was at least 80 hours of
- 1:51guaranteed joy i was going
- 1:52to get a lot of fun out of this it's going to last me all
- 1:54christmas i felt like it
- 1:56was a bargain but some fans were outraged how could nintendo
- 2:00justify that price tag
- 2:01SPEAKER_00: when it's clearly spent so little in putting it together
- 2:05SPEAKER_00: It's an argument I've always found hard to follow that.
- 2:08It's not like we expect romantic comedies to be cheaper at the
- 2:11cinema than
- 2:12SPEAKER_00: superhero movies because the budgets are less.
- 2:14SPEAKER_00: But at the same time,
- 2:15SPEAKER_00: when other game collections come in at a far more wallet-friendly price,
- 2:18SPEAKER_00: Rare Replay,
- 2:19SPEAKER_00: for instance,
- 2:19SPEAKER_00: featured 30 iconic games,
- 2:21SPEAKER_00: including the Banjo-Kazooie platformers,
- 2:23SPEAKER_00: for £30.
- 2:24SPEAKER_00: I can see why some fans felt short-changed.
- 2:27In the end,
- 2:28though,
- 2:28that Mario collection shifted 9 million copies in just a few months.
- 2:31SPEAKER_00: People did see the value.
- 2:34SPEAKER_00: But will the same thing happen this time?
- 2:35SPEAKER_00: For all the hand-wringing,
- 2:37will Nintendo Switch 2 just carry on where its predecessor left
- 2:41off and sell huge
- 2:42SPEAKER_00: amounts of units?
- 2:44SPEAKER_00: I know a lot of the issues actually aren't about the console price,
- 2:46but they're around the $80 price associated with the game Mario
- 2:49Kart World,
- 2:49SPEAKER_00: although it is cheaper in the bundle.
- 2:51SPEAKER_00: And I have to ask, who's buying Switch 2 without Mario Kart?
- 2:54SPEAKER_00: Anyway.
- 2:56SPEAKER_00: Anyway,
- 2:56SPEAKER_00: the point is,
- 2:56it's the highest price we've seen yet for a AAA video game and
- 3:00a big leap over the
- 3:01SPEAKER_00: Switch 1 pricing.
- 3:02SPEAKER_00: Is it too high for a video game?
- 3:04SPEAKER_00: Will people find it hard to justify that in a cost of living crisis?
- 3:07Or does its inevitable longevity and quality make it a more
- 3:10palatable purchase?
- 3:11SPEAKER_00: Ultimately, the market will decide this thing.
- 3:14SPEAKER_00: Nintendo, PlayStation, Xbox have all got the pricing wrong in the past.
- 3:17SPEAKER_00: Nintendo with the 3DS,
- 3:18SPEAKER_00: PlayStation with the PS3,
- 3:19SPEAKER_00: Xbox with the Xbox One,
- 3:20SPEAKER_00: and they all reacted accordingly.
- 3:22Nintendo Switch 2 looks like a pretty good console with a bunch
- 3:25of great looking games.
- 3:26SPEAKER_00: That's the main thing.
- 3:27SPEAKER_00: You can't fix a bad product,
- 3:29SPEAKER_00: but the price can always be amended,
- 3:31SPEAKER_00: assuming the tariffs don't make that financially untenable.
- 3:37SPEAKER_00: The other thing about the Direct that sort of spoke to me a little bit,
- 3:40SPEAKER_00: surprised me in a way,
- 3:41is that it felt like very much like a PlayStation and Xbox
- 3:47press conference or video.
- 3:49It's been a long time since I've considered Nintendo a direct
- 3:51rival to either of those people.
- 3:53They're competitors,
- 3:53of course,
- 3:54in the modern entertainment age where nobody has any time.
- 3:57SPEAKER_00: Everyone is competing with everyone.
- 3:58SPEAKER_00: Movies, books, TikToks, walks in the park, you name it.
- 4:02SPEAKER_00: But ever since Wii,
- 4:03SPEAKER_00: Nintendo has largely avoided targeting traditional gamers,
- 4:06SPEAKER_00: bar a very brief spell at the launch of Wii U.
- 4:09It's focused its efforts on families with novelty control
- 4:12schemes and brightly
- 4:13SPEAKER_00: colored games.
- 4:14SPEAKER_00: Of course, the Switch did successfully appeal to older gamers.
- 4:17The machine's portability has attracted time-poor adults who
- 4:20don't get much TV time.
- 4:21SPEAKER_00: I'm one of those adults.
- 4:22SPEAKER_00: But it's still not quite a direct competitor to Xbox or PlayStation.
- 4:26The most popular franchises on Sony and Microsoft's machines
- 4:29remain largely absent
- 4:31SPEAKER_00: from Nintendo,
- 4:31SPEAKER_00: Call of Duty,
- 4:32SPEAKER_00: Madden,
- 4:33SPEAKER_00: Assassin's Creed.
- 4:34SPEAKER_00: Even the Switch versions of FIFA,
- 4:36SPEAKER_00: at least up until the EA Sports FC rebrand,
- 4:38SPEAKER_00: were the significantly inferior legacy editions.
- 4:42SPEAKER_00: However,
- 4:42the Switch 2 release date is filled with games that have sold
- 4:45very strongly on
- 4:46SPEAKER_00: PlayStation and Xbox formats.
- 4:48SPEAKER_00: There will be Call of Duty,
- 4:50SPEAKER_00: there will be Madden,
- 4:51SPEAKER_00: EA Sports FC,
- 4:52SPEAKER_00: the full version,
- 4:53SPEAKER_00: Final Fantasy,
- 4:53SPEAKER_00: plus modern hits like Elden Ring and Cyberpunk 2077.
- 4:57At this point,
- 4:57I'm half expecting a Switch 2 version of Grand Theft Auto 6.
- 5:02Switch 2 is clearly powerful enough to run capable versions of
- 5:05modern games.
- 5:06SPEAKER_00: With publishers,
- 5:07SPEAKER_00: developers and even platform holders targeting PCs with various specs,
- 5:10SPEAKER_00: including the Steam tech,
- 5:12SPEAKER_00: plus of course the existence of the Xbox Series S,
- 5:14SPEAKER_00: it's not unreasonable to suggest Switch 2 might be able to run most,
- 5:17SPEAKER_00: or at least a lot,
- 5:19SPEAKER_00: of things that this generation throws at it.
- 5:21SPEAKER_00: That certainly wasn't the case last time.
- 5:24SPEAKER_00: In addition,
- 5:24SPEAKER_00: one of the biggest surprises of the Switch 2 reveal was the Dustbloods,
- 5:28SPEAKER_00: a new hardcore action game by Elden Ring developer From Software.
- 5:31SPEAKER_00: Nintendo signs games like this from time to time,
- 5:33and they're largely designed to bring a new audience to the
- 5:35Nintendo ecosystem.
- 5:36SPEAKER_00: So someone comes in for Dustbloods,
- 5:38SPEAKER_00: they might go and play Metroid,
- 5:39SPEAKER_00: they might buy an extra controller,
- 5:40SPEAKER_00: they might sign up to the online service.
- 5:42SPEAKER_00: But here's the thing,
- 5:43SPEAKER_00: the audience for Dustbloods is,
- 5:44SPEAKER_00: frankly,
- 5:45a PlayStation audience from software's games that are closely
- 5:47associated with PlayStation.
- 5:49SPEAKER_00: Now,
- 5:49I'm not suggesting from software fans are going to start
- 5:52trading in their PS5s for
- 5:53SPEAKER_00: a Switch 2,
- 5:54nor am I suggesting PlayStation or Xbox fans would ever choose
- 5:57Mario Kart over Gran
- 5:58SPEAKER_00: Turismo or Metroid over Halo.
- 6:01SPEAKER_00: But what about as an additional purchase,
- 6:03SPEAKER_00: a means to take something like Elden Ring,
- 6:05SPEAKER_00: which they've already played,
- 6:06SPEAKER_00: on the go?
- 6:07We know there is a decent crossover between PlayStation slash
- 6:10Xbox owners and the
- 6:11SPEAKER_00: Switch audience.
- 6:12The difference this time is that there appears to be more of
- 6:15the same games coming
- 6:16SPEAKER_00: to Nintendo's systems.
- 6:18SPEAKER_00: In this engagement era,
- 6:20any platform that's hoovering up some of those valuable Madden
- 6:23or Call of Duty
- 6:24SPEAKER_00: hours is a competitor to PS5 and Xbox consoles.
- 6:28SPEAKER_00: And although PS5 and Xbox Series X are technically superior machines,
- 6:31SPEAKER_00: Nintendo is the more flexible option,
- 6:34SPEAKER_00: at least for now.
- 6:35SPEAKER_00: I've often felt PlayStation,
- 6:36SPEAKER_00: Xbox,
- 6:37SPEAKER_00: and Nintendo play slightly different versions of the same sport,
- 6:40SPEAKER_00: and I still feel that way,
- 6:42SPEAKER_00: it's just now they appear to be playing more on the same park.
- 6:45SPEAKER_00: I know certain third-party developers that will be hoping I'm right.
- 6:48SPEAKER_00: At a bar at GDC,
- 6:49I spoke to one leader of a major independent studio who was
- 6:52openly concerned by
- 6:54SPEAKER_00: Xbox's strategy of moving away from the console.
- 6:56He was concerned it would negatively impact future negotiations
- 7:00with Sony.
- 7:01It's tough negotiating with somebody when they know that you
- 7:04are their only real choice,
- 7:05SPEAKER_00: he said.
- 7:06SPEAKER_00: Perhaps Nintendo Switch 2 could be that alternative choice,
- 7:09a viable option for third-party developers that's an
- 7:12alternative to PlayStations.
- 7:15Outside of the third party games,
- 7:16let's talk a little bit about the first party games.
- 7:18SPEAKER_00: In our reaction podcast last week,
- 7:20GameSpot's Lucy James talked of her surprise that there weren't
- 7:23more first party
- 7:24SPEAKER_00: games on display during the Switch 2 reveal.
- 7:26SPEAKER_00: In truth,
- 7:27SPEAKER_00: there was plenty,
- 7:28including some pretty big franchise games in the form of Mario
- 7:30Kart and Pokemon.
- 7:32Yet I understood where Lucy was coming from because it did feel
- 7:35like something was missing,
- 7:37SPEAKER_00: namely a big new Mario or Zelda game that can,
- 7:40SPEAKER_00: alongside Mario Kart,
- 7:42SPEAKER_00: appeal to both mainstream and hardcore audiences alike.
- 7:46SPEAKER_00: Yet what if, and bear with me here, Donkey Kong Bonanza is that game?
- 7:50SPEAKER_00: Let me jump back a bit.
- 7:52A lot has been made about the success of Nintendo Switch
- 7:54because of its 150 million sales.
- 7:57SPEAKER_00: And it's certainly impressive.
- 7:58SPEAKER_00: There's no bones about it.
- 8:01SPEAKER_00: But it's not astronomically bigger than any other era.
- 8:04SPEAKER_00: In the previous generation,
- 8:05SPEAKER_00: the Wii U and the 3DS generation,
- 8:06SPEAKER_00: Nintendo shifted a disappointing 90 million pieces of hardware.
- 8:10For the generation before,
- 8:11the Wii and DS generation,
- 8:12it was over 250 million.
- 8:15SPEAKER_00: The one before that, GameCube and Game Boy Advance, was 100 million.
- 8:18In the 1990s,
- 8:19across the N64,
- 8:20SNES and Game Boy,
- 8:21Nintendo shifted some 200 million devices.
- 8:25As a single product,
- 8:26Switch is one of the most successful games and machines of all time.
- 8:28SPEAKER_00: But if you take a more holistic view of Nintendo's hardware business,
- 8:32SPEAKER_00: selling 150 million machines over eight years is great,
- 8:35SPEAKER_00: but it's not unheard of.
- 8:37Where I believe Switch has really delivered for Nintendo has
- 8:40been in terms of its IP.
- 8:41SPEAKER_00: Before the launch of The Legend of Zelda Breath of the Wild,
- 8:44SPEAKER_00: the best-selling Zelda game had only sold 9 million units,
- 8:47SPEAKER_00: and that was 2006's Twilight Princess.
- 8:50SPEAKER_00: Breath of the Wild had sold nearly four times that.
- 8:54Super Mario Odyssey is over twice as big as the previous
- 8:57best-selling 3D Mario game.
- 8:58Animal Crossing is three times bigger than the previous
- 9:00best-selling title in that series.
- 9:02SPEAKER_00: Mario Kart,
- 9:03SPEAKER_00: Pokemon,
- 9:03SPEAKER_00: Luigi's Mansion,
- 9:04SPEAKER_00: even smaller brands like Pikmin,
- 9:05Fire Emblem and Kirby are all exponentially bigger today than
- 9:09they were eight years ago.
- 9:11It's this franchise growth that has enabled Nintendo to
- 9:14transform itself into a
- 9:15SPEAKER_00: Disney-like entertainment behemoth.
- 9:17SPEAKER_00: Lego sets, theme parks, movies, live events, museums, alarm clocks.
- 9:20SPEAKER_00: Yes,
- 9:21SPEAKER_00: Nintendo has always had a strong licensing business,
- 9:23SPEAKER_00: but it's now doing a lot of that work itself.
- 9:26SPEAKER_00: It co-developed those Lego sets.
- 9:27SPEAKER_00: It's co-producing the movies.
- 9:28SPEAKER_00: It made the alarm clock.
- 9:29SPEAKER_00: It designed the theme parks.
- 9:32are still a few brands that didn't grow much during the switch
- 9:35generation or at all
- 9:36which those and those are opportunities for nintendo one of
- 9:39those games is metroid
- 9:40which received one admittedly excellent 2d game and a remaster
- 9:45which was also
- 9:45admittedly excellent during the switch era both of which
- 9:49performed very very well
- 9:50SPEAKER_00: by metroid standards
- 9:52SPEAKER_00: But Metroid Prime 4 Beyond,
- 9:53SPEAKER_00: which is one of the games due this year,
- 9:55is a fully-fledged new 3D Metroid that crosses the Switch 1 and
- 9:592 generations.
- 10:00SPEAKER_00: It's the franchise's biggest launch in more than 15 years.
- 10:03SPEAKER_00: It's an opportunity.
- 10:05But,
- 10:05as I said in last week's newsletter,
- 10:07I think the biggest opportunity could be Donkey Kong.
- 10:10SPEAKER_00: The character had a starring role in 2023's $1 billion Mario movie,
- 10:14SPEAKER_00: and a new Donkey Kong theme area had opened up at Super Nintendo World.
- 10:18SPEAKER_00: Yet game-wise,
- 10:19SPEAKER_00: outside of a few guest appearances and a couple of remasters,
- 10:22SPEAKER_00: he was largely missing from the entire Switch era.
- 10:25So I'm really keen to see how big Nintendo goes with his new
- 10:27Donkey Kong game.
- 10:28SPEAKER_00: Is he going to treat it like a hero product?
- 10:30Because it's the success of the IP like that which will define
- 10:33how successful the
- 10:33SPEAKER_00: Switch 2 generation will be,
- 10:35SPEAKER_00: more than how many units of hardware are sold.
- 10:38SPEAKER_00: That's it for today's episode of Here's the Drink.
- 10:41Join us later in the week for our interview with video game
- 10:44analyst Matthew Ball,
- 10:44SPEAKER_00: plus our news and analysis show.
- 10:46SPEAKER_00: Thank you for tuning in.
- 10:49SPEAKER_00: Music.
