Latest / Patriots Unfiltered / Training Camp-Cast 8/6: Maye / Offense Find a Rhythm, Defense Shows Strong vs. Daniels, Full Joint Practice Breakdown
Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: We were fresh off the fields from behind Jellette Stadium
- 0:02Speaker 1: where the Patriots and Commanders got into it for almost
- 0:04Speaker 1: two hours in a joint practice.
- 0:06Speaker 2: Let's break it all.
- 0:06Speaker 1: Down, Patriots training camp, cast and guys. I might say
- 0:17Speaker 1: this is the ultimate show of the summer, the joint
- 0:20Speaker 1: practice wrap up. There was a ton going on in
- 0:22Speaker 1: the field. Hard to take it all in. Paul, I
- 0:24Speaker 1: talked to you right after practice. We both felt a
- 0:26Speaker 1: little over overwhelmed.
- 0:27Speaker 3: But I do think right next to overwhelmed is very encouraged,
- 0:32Speaker 3: very optimistic. I thought there was a lot of good competition.
- 0:35Speaker 3: I know, that's the cliche, that's what all the players thought.
- 0:37Speaker 3: It was good to be good to be in a
- 0:38Speaker 3: competitive environment. We got a couple of scraps. Mike Rabel
- 0:41Speaker 3: was part of those scraps, but back and forth. I
- 0:44Speaker 3: thought there was some periods where the Patriots looked really good,
- 0:46Speaker 3: some periods not so good. I think that's what you're
- 0:48Speaker 3: looking to see. Much much different case from last year,
- 0:52Speaker 3: So I think a lot to be optimistic about.
- 0:54Speaker 4: I agree, Yeah, that was my number one takeaway.
- 0:56Speaker 5: It was it was a lot different than the Eagles
- 0:58Speaker 5: joint practice that we had that we keep bringing up
- 1:00Speaker 5: that's the bar of let's not go with that in
- 1:03Speaker 5: that direction. And the Patriots offensively, DUSA had his eyes
- 1:07Speaker 5: mostly on the defense, so times the offense a little bit.
- 1:11Speaker 5: I thought Drake may for ninety nine point nine percent
- 1:14Speaker 5: of this practice was really good. The end we'll get
- 1:16Speaker 5: to it wasn't a great ending for the offense, but
- 1:20Speaker 5: the optimistic view is that Drake looked like he was
- 1:23Speaker 5: in rhythm. Him and Pob Douglas early was a connection
- 1:26Speaker 5: that the commander simply just could not stop. And then
- 1:29Speaker 5: the offensive line I thought held its own. I thought
- 1:31Speaker 5: it was okay, was a dominant no, but it was
- 1:33Speaker 5: more than okay. Nothing like that Eagles practice last year.
- 1:37Speaker 5: Will Campbell seemed to fare pretty well. Jared Wilson fared
- 1:40Speaker 5: pretty well. So I come out of this practice feeling
- 1:43Speaker 5: like the Patriots showed well overall. I know, we get
- 1:46Speaker 5: into who won the practice and all that good stuff.
- 1:49Speaker 5: I just think it was a good positive day and
- 1:51Speaker 5: a good step forward.
- 1:52Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean I felt similar about the defense. I
- 1:54Speaker 1: thought Washington had a pretty good start right out of
- 1:56Speaker 1: the gate, where you saw Jayden Daniels hitting some quick
- 1:58Speaker 1: passes to Zacher.
- 2:00Speaker 2: But I felt like it got progressively.
- 2:02Speaker 1: Better as I watched, and I mean this the second
- 2:04Speaker 1: and last possession where they ran a couple of read
- 2:06Speaker 1: options which they just felt like they covered well.
- 2:08Speaker 2: They ran well. There was one run by the number eight.
- 2:12Speaker 1: They're they're running back Robinson, Robinson who they got the
- 2:15Speaker 1: edge on one of them and it looked like he
- 2:17Speaker 1: was gone.
- 2:17Speaker 2: So there were some moments, but felt like they were
- 2:20Speaker 2: ninety two.
- 2:21Speaker 1: Those two guys Harold Landry, Christian Barmore in the backfield
- 2:24Speaker 1: a lot tonga, real tough up front, Robert Splaine getting
- 2:27Speaker 1: a hand on a ball, punching that up in the air,
- 2:29Speaker 1: making some plays on the ball. So just competitive and
- 2:32Speaker 1: again i'll highlight I don't want to jump right to
- 2:34Speaker 1: Alex Austin at the end, but the competitive team portion
- 2:37Speaker 1: right at the end, forty five seconds from the twenty
- 2:39Speaker 1: five yard line, got to punch it in. Came down
- 2:41Speaker 1: to the end, fourth down play, another Alex Austin.
- 2:44Speaker 2: Come up with.
- 2:44Speaker 3: That series was excellent. I thought both defenses did well
- 2:48Speaker 3: in that final series. To Evans's point, that was the
- 2:51Speaker 3: one point one percent that he wasn't thrilled with. Drake
- 2:54Speaker 3: may I would agree, and I thought the pass rush.
- 2:56Speaker 3: I thought the coverage was a little leaky. I thought,
- 2:58Speaker 3: you know, at times, Mike watched definitely more of the defense,
- 3:02Speaker 3: so I would go with his assessment over mine because
- 3:05Speaker 3: I was just sort of head on a swivel watching,
- 3:07Speaker 3: trying to take it all in. But I definitely noticed
- 3:10Speaker 3: barmore in the backfield. I noticed, even with some of
- 3:13Speaker 3: the secondary groups, some different numbers Joshua Farmer, Elijah Ponder,
- 3:18Speaker 3: guys you know, showing up in the backfield that we
- 3:20Speaker 3: hadn't really seen a lot of. So the word today
- 3:23Speaker 3: that I keep coming back to was competitive. They were
- 3:25Speaker 3: far more competitive than we've seen in the recent past.
- 3:28Speaker 1: Just a highlight, real quick Ivan Joshua Farmer, he stood
- 3:30Speaker 1: out to me. He was a guy that is really surging,
- 3:33Speaker 1: a little bit banged up earlier in camp, coming on
- 3:35Speaker 1: getting some quality reps the last couple of days, and
- 3:37Speaker 1: then today it seemed like a translated so that rookie
- 3:40Speaker 1: providing some good depth on the defensive line.
- 3:41Speaker 2: I'm glad you shout at him out.
- 3:43Speaker 4: Yeah me too.
- 3:43Speaker 5: We both talked about Farmer getting in the backfield a
- 3:46Speaker 5: few times today and I agree with do so maybe
- 3:49Speaker 5: a little bit of a slow star for him health
- 3:51Speaker 5: wise in training camp wasn't always out there to start camp.
- 3:54Speaker 4: But hopefully he's coming on.
- 3:56Speaker 5: And that's another rookie that you can add into Campbell
- 3:59Speaker 5: and Henderson and Wilson and Williams and now Farmer. Like,
- 4:03Speaker 5: if you get some of these rookies and you get
- 4:05Speaker 5: four or five guys that can all at least be
- 4:07Speaker 5: a rotational player for you, that's a good draft class
- 4:10Speaker 5: out of the shoot so far. But I'll go back
- 4:12Speaker 5: to Drake because I just want to reiterate. I just
- 4:15Speaker 5: thought he was great for the majority of this practice.
- 4:17Speaker 5: He had one stretch where he hit Pop Douglas on
- 4:21Speaker 5: a little shallow cross or the beginning of practice. Pop
- 4:23Speaker 5: Douglas was like unguardable. They couldn't get their hands on him.
- 4:26Speaker 5: And he hit a little shallow crosser where Pop got
- 4:29Speaker 5: some open field, you know, he had some open grass
- 4:31Speaker 5: in front of him. A nice explosive play. Then Drake
- 4:34Speaker 5: had a little side up, stepping up off platform throw
- 4:38Speaker 5: with some pressure to Pop Douglas on a crossing route
- 4:41Speaker 5: and then he hit Austin Hooper up the scene for
- 4:44Speaker 5: a completion in sequential order, like three plays right in
- 4:47Speaker 5: a row. Boom, boom, boom, and I thought he was
- 4:49Speaker 5: really sharp. And with Drake, when you start to get
- 4:52Speaker 5: into you know, he's pumping guys off and he's looking
- 4:54Speaker 5: guys off and he's moving around like that's.
- 4:56Speaker 4: When you can tell that he's feeling it a little bit.
- 4:58Speaker 3: And he said it after the you start to get
- 5:01Speaker 3: a little bit of a rhythm, you could see.
- 5:02Speaker 4: It absolutely, and I felt like that was a really
- 5:04Speaker 4: good stretch for him.
- 5:05Speaker 1: Kishan Boodie as well, I think I'm watching a really
- 5:08Speaker 1: nice shoulder on the sideline.
- 5:10Speaker 3: I think he's really good at that play. I think
- 5:12Speaker 3: he just has good, good body control, good footwork, which
- 5:15Speaker 3: is so funny because the first thing everybody remembers about
- 5:17Speaker 3: him is not getting that second foot in bounds in
- 5:19Speaker 3: his first ever game in the NFL. And I think
- 5:21Speaker 3: he's done a really good job of that.
- 5:23Speaker 1: One other play, just to highlight with the twos, when
- 5:25Speaker 1: they got up in that twenty five yard line in
- 5:28Speaker 1: first play from scrimmage, Josh Jobs Josh Dobbs drops back
- 5:31Speaker 1: throws one right in the bucket to mac Hollins. Great catch,
- 5:34Speaker 1: one play, one touchdown and they're right off the field.
- 5:36Speaker 2: That was nice, nice showing from the two.
- 5:38Speaker 3: Which made my pre practice prediction or actually assertion that
- 5:42Speaker 3: Joshua Dobbs I think has come on a little bit.
- 5:44Speaker 3: That was the throw of the day.
- 5:45Speaker 5: Yeah, beautiful, and Mac Collins coming on a little bit too,
- 5:49Speaker 5: Dus pumping him up in the free game and I
- 5:51Speaker 5: felt like he had I want to say, three or
- 5:53Speaker 5: four catches in team from both quarterbacks and with Drake
- 5:57Speaker 5: a nice hole shot in the cover two hole along
- 5:59Speaker 5: this sideline out with anticipation that he hit him on
- 6:03Speaker 5: and then he had the big one from Dobbs. So
- 6:05Speaker 5: playing a lot today, Diggs was limited in and out
- 6:08Speaker 5: a little bit during team drills, so Matt Collins got
- 6:11Speaker 5: quite a bit of run and this was the most
- 6:13Speaker 5: noticeable practice for him as well.
- 6:16Speaker 4: So he was definitely on the on the standouts or
- 6:18Speaker 4: the positive side.
- 6:19Speaker 1: Okay, so let's talk about that last play from Drake,
- 6:21Speaker 1: because last couple practices I've mentioned in stadium, we saw
- 6:24Speaker 1: Drake throw an interception to Alex Austin to end that practice.
- 6:28Speaker 1: Competitive periods on Monday, similar kind of results, not quite
- 6:31Speaker 1: finishing strong.
- 6:33Speaker 2: That was one of my keys today coming in.
- 6:35Speaker 1: They come in for their forty five seconds from the
- 6:37Speaker 1: twenty five He's completion to Hunter Henry.
- 6:39Speaker 2: A completion de Booty just misses diggs On trying to
- 6:43Speaker 2: throw the fade, and then a tipball.
- 6:44Speaker 1: Interception, which you know, Drake said, these are the things
- 6:46Speaker 1: that will happen Bobby Wagner. But you know, still, for me,
- 6:49Speaker 1: it's just that's a third day in a row where
- 6:51Speaker 1: we've seen them kind of sputter a little bit at
- 6:53Speaker 1: the end, and I don't want to take away from
- 6:54Speaker 1: the great practice that they had, and they punched back
- 6:56Speaker 1: a lot, but that's the one that leaves the taste
- 6:58Speaker 1: in your mouth at the end of this practice.
- 6:59Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean, it's unfortunate. And I think back to
- 7:02Speaker 3: something Evan said when we had the you know, the
- 7:05Speaker 3: show before the practice about how hard it is to
- 7:08Speaker 3: sort of look at it at practice because you just
- 7:10Speaker 3: go in live. That's a play that the interception is
- 7:13Speaker 3: a player. I want to see sort of from the backside,
- 7:15Speaker 3: kind of see what Drake was looking at. He talked
- 7:18Speaker 3: about he gave a lot of credit to Bobby Wagner,
- 7:20Speaker 3: you know, for having good eyes on the play. I
- 7:22Speaker 3: think he said he tried to put a little extra
- 7:24Speaker 3: zip on it to get it through and wasn't able
- 7:26Speaker 3: to do. But I'd like to see it and say like, well,
- 7:28Speaker 3: should you have been trying to do that or should
- 7:30Speaker 3: you have gone somewhere else, Because there's no question that
- 7:33Speaker 3: I felt that Pop had a step on Mike Sandras
- 7:36Speaker 3: still and would have been a touchdown had had the
- 7:39Speaker 3: ball not been deflected. So it might be a mental error,
- 7:42Speaker 3: it might be a physical mistake. You know, we don't
- 7:44Speaker 3: know if you don't get a chance to see it
- 7:46Speaker 3: in a couple of different ways.
- 7:47Speaker 5: Yeah, May said after practice that he probably should have
- 7:49Speaker 5: moved Bobby Wagner with his eyes a little bit more,
- 7:52Speaker 5: held him in the middle of the field. Looked like
- 7:54Speaker 5: Wagner dropped out and was like a free player, just
- 7:56Speaker 5: like a spy or a robber, just sitting in the
- 7:59Speaker 5: middle of the field where Drake's eyes and Pop separated
- 8:02Speaker 5: so quickly on the slant that I think Drake just
- 8:04Speaker 5: immediately went to the slant and it brought Bobby Wagner
- 8:08Speaker 5: to the party and he just tipped it up in
- 8:10Speaker 5: the air in the passing lane and Sandra is still
- 8:12Speaker 5: caught the tip pass So right, look like a right idea,
- 8:17Speaker 5: but with a veteran heady player like Bobby Wagner. You
- 8:20Speaker 5: have to maybe give him a little quick look off first,
- 8:23Speaker 5: or you start left and then go right. Just try
- 8:25Speaker 5: to move him with your eyes in some way, shape
- 8:28Speaker 5: or form to open up that passing window. It's also
- 8:31Speaker 5: possible he just didn't see him, which sometimes happens to
- 8:34Speaker 5: dropping out of the rush and you just don't see him.
- 8:36Speaker 5: So that was, like I said, you could put up
- 8:40Speaker 5: nine ten great throws from Drake today and then that's
- 8:43Speaker 5: the one blemish towards the end of practice.
- 8:46Speaker 2: Anybody else did you guys saw standard.
- 8:48Speaker 1: I just wanted to mention Travon Henderson, who every now
- 8:50Speaker 1: and then I was looking over at the offensive sideline
- 8:52Speaker 1: out side of the ball, and I would you see
- 8:54Speaker 1: some nice runs by him. I also saw a drop
- 8:56Speaker 1: which was a great throw by Drake in the end zone.
- 8:58Speaker 2: I mean dropping the bucket.
- 9:00Speaker 1: You could tell hendersons are trying to find it, couldn't
- 9:03Speaker 1: quite hang onto it.
- 9:03Speaker 2: But you know, Henderson continues just to show up with his.
- 9:06Speaker 3: Tough day for him catching the ball. He had a
- 9:08Speaker 3: couple of drops, but I would look at it on
- 9:11Speaker 3: the positive side of saying these are the these are
- 9:13Speaker 3: kinds of plays that I think he's going to be
- 9:15Speaker 3: able to make catching the ball. It happens now you
- 9:20Speaker 3: end up dropping passes all the time. That becomes a problem.
- 9:23Speaker 3: But to me, the bigger thing is the execution in
- 9:25Speaker 3: the red zone and getting open the way he did
- 9:28Speaker 3: on that little fade, little little wheel in the end zone,
- 9:30Speaker 3: he was wide open. Again. I don't think the linebacker
- 9:33Speaker 3: is going to be able to handle him.
- 9:35Speaker 1: No. One other thing I should point out it seemed
- 9:37Speaker 1: like he instigated a little bit of a fight with
- 9:39Speaker 1: some of his pass blocking, which of course we've talked
- 9:40Speaker 1: about all spring. Tre Van Henderson coming in with pass
- 9:43Speaker 1: blocking sounded like the Commanders took maybe a little exception
- 9:45Speaker 1: to some of his pass blocking.
- 9:47Speaker 2: Yeah, little scrum broke out.
- 9:48Speaker 4: Yeah, not to be the football guy here.
- 9:50Speaker 5: Everybody's talking about Mike Rabel getting in the scrum trying
- 9:54Speaker 5: to break it up. But the thing that stood out
- 9:56Speaker 5: to me is that Henderson put the blitzer on his
- 9:58Speaker 5: butt and that's what started the d tire thing. And
- 10:00Speaker 5: that's what we wanted to see out of him at
- 10:03Speaker 5: such a standout trait of his game from college and
- 10:05Speaker 5: to see it translating into the pros is a really
- 10:08Speaker 5: good sign just for his ability to play on third down,
- 10:11Speaker 5: because when you get into the NFL, you see the
- 10:13Speaker 5: blitz looks that these NFL defenses are going to send
- 10:15Speaker 5: your way compared to the college game. That's why a
- 10:18Speaker 5: lot of rookie running backs don't play in the passing
- 10:21Speaker 5: game early on in their careers. So if Henderson can
- 10:23Speaker 5: hold up in pass pro, then you can put them
- 10:25Speaker 5: on the field in those types of situations. So that
- 10:28Speaker 5: stood out to me. His speed always stands out. But
- 10:31Speaker 5: a couple of other things, just on the offensive line.
- 10:33Speaker 5: You know, Marcus Bryant continues to get some work at
- 10:36Speaker 5: ride tackle. No Morgan Moses today, so it was split
- 10:39Speaker 5: between Trey Jacobs and Marcus Bryant, And at this point
- 10:42Speaker 5: I would give maybe a little bit of an edge
- 10:43Speaker 5: to Marcus Bryant. I think he took yeah, yeah, I
- 10:46Speaker 5: think he might have fared better. And then there was
- 10:49Speaker 5: one period where Ben Brown took center reps over Garrett Bradbury.
- 10:55Speaker 5: I don't know if that was performance related, injury related,
- 10:58Speaker 5: who the hell knows, but he did do it, so
- 11:00Speaker 5: that's worth noting as well. So there's some different shuffling
- 11:04Speaker 5: there on the offensive line.
- 11:06Speaker 4: But for the most part.
- 11:07Speaker 5: You saw that same group of Campbell, Wilson, Bradbury on
- 11:11Speaker 5: WNU and then the rotating right.
- 11:13Speaker 1: Yeah, all right, well, great stuff, a lot of fun
- 11:15Speaker 1: out there on the fields today.
- 11:17Speaker 2: Be sure to check out.
- 11:17Speaker 1: We'll all be writing a little bit more, dive into
- 11:19Speaker 1: some more of the details of this practice. As we said,
- 11:22Speaker 1: plenty to see and of course, the first preseason game
- 11:24Speaker 1: of the summer is going to kick off Friday night
- 11:26Speaker 1: here at Gillette Stadium against the Commanders, so be sure
- 11:29Speaker 1: to tune in early six pm. Will be the Tom
- 11:30Speaker 1: Brady statue unveiling, then Paul and I for the pregame show.
- 11:34Speaker 1: We'll be right on the tail of that as well,
- 11:36Speaker 1: take you right into the game and get you ready
- 11:37Speaker 1: for that. As for practice and the camp cast will
- 11:39Speaker 1: be back on Sunday for the last Patriots training camp
- 11:43Speaker 1: practice of the.
- 11:43Speaker 2: Summer, so we'll see you then. But first we'll see
- 11:46Speaker 2: on Friday night for the first preseason game against the Commanders.
