- 0:01Speaker 1: Hey, discos, need a little more Disgraceland in your life,
- 0:05Speaker 1: just to touch to get you through. Yeah, me too.
- 0:08Speaker 1: This is the podcast that comes after the podcast.
- 0:11Speaker 2: Welcome to Disgraceland, the after Party.
- 0:28Speaker 1: Welcome to the Disgraceland bonus episode, a little thing we
- 0:31Speaker 1: like to call the after Party. This is the show
- 0:34Speaker 1: after the show, the party after the party, the bridge
- 0:36Speaker 1: to get you from one full episode of Disgraceland to
- 0:38Speaker 1: the other, the backyard, to dig into the dirt, our
- 0:42Speaker 1: mission to uncover the truth, to confront the myth, and
- 0:44Speaker 1: to reclaim the story. On this bonus episode, we are
- 0:47Speaker 1: discussing Lady Gaga and Elvis Presley related crimes and conspiracies,
- 0:52Speaker 1: highlighting some special Disgraceland community members, giving away some merch
- 0:55Speaker 1: because it's always a season of giving here in Disgraceland,
- 0:58Speaker 1: and we get into your emails, comments, dms, and as
- 1:01Speaker 1: always a whole lot of rosie. This is the podcast
- 1:04Speaker 1: for the musically obsessed, the outsiders, that independent thinkers who
- 1:07Speaker 1: know that the best history is the history that gets buried.
- 1:10Speaker 1: Disgrace Lands, where I tell the stories they didn't want told,
- 1:13Speaker 1: the kind you'll end up telling someone else. All right,
- 1:15Speaker 1: disc goes let's get into it. Happy New Year. We
- 1:32Speaker 1: are back. We are shooting out of this canon called
- 1:34Speaker 1: twenty twenty six, and I am so excited to be
- 1:37Speaker 1: with you guys, happy that you're here with me as well.
- 1:39Speaker 1: Now listen, I don't know about y'all, but my algorithm
- 1:42Speaker 1: served up a small handful of twenty twenty six music
- 1:46Speaker 1: prediction articles over the past few weeks, over the holidays
- 1:50Speaker 1: at the end of the year. Now, I never read
- 1:52Speaker 1: these articles because no one really knows what's going to happen,
- 1:56Speaker 1: and just because you know the future of music, it's
- 1:59Speaker 1: way less interesting to me than the history of music.
- 2:03Speaker 3: Now.
- 2:03Speaker 1: One thing I think I know, however, is that at
- 2:07Speaker 1: the end of nineteen seventy six, nobody that I'm aware
- 2:11Speaker 1: of anyways, was predicting the death of Elvis Presley in
- 2:15Speaker 1: nineteen seventy seven, which, let's be honest, given the king's
- 2:19Speaker 1: physical shape, that wouldn't have been an unserious prognostication. But
- 2:25Speaker 1: with Elvis's passing came the conspiracies about his death and
- 2:30Speaker 1: the conspiracy claims that he was still alive. And after
- 2:35Speaker 1: all these years, this morning I wake up, I open
- 2:38Speaker 1: my laptop. I'm trying to research music predictions from the
- 2:43Speaker 1: past that went wrong, and somehow I end up on
- 2:46Speaker 1: this total other path of research where I come across
- 2:51Speaker 1: this event from music history, this spark, this single event
- 2:59Speaker 1: that ignited all of these wild theories about Elvis Presley
- 3:04Speaker 1: still being alive. You remember these theories, these sensational claims
- 3:08Speaker 1: that screamed from tabloid newspaper covers in supermarket checkout lines
- 3:12Speaker 1: for decades. Elvis spotted working at Burger King, Elvis seen
- 3:16Speaker 1: in New Mexico. Elvis is alive and pretending to be
- 3:19Speaker 1: an Elvis impersonator. That last one from the Weekly World
- 3:22Speaker 1: News is my favorite. These headlines, though, these conspiracies all right,
- 3:27Speaker 1: as I'm going through them this morning, and I'm thinking
- 3:30Speaker 1: about my childhood and trying to make sense of all this.
- 3:33Speaker 1: As I'm standing in the in the in the checkout
- 3:36Speaker 1: line with my mom, you know, and we're getting our
- 3:39Speaker 1: box of fruity pebbles and and our and our sunny Delight,
- 3:44Speaker 1: and you know, she's she's probably got a cart in Winston's.
- 3:46Speaker 1: She's she's getting for a little bit cheaper at the
- 3:48Speaker 1: grocery store than she would at the I don't know,
- 3:50Speaker 1: the corner store. And you know, I'm just staring at
- 3:53Speaker 1: the magazines on the rack there, and you know, the
- 3:55Speaker 1: whole Elvis thing is just fascinating to me. I mean,
- 3:58Speaker 1: if you were if you were alive in the eighties
- 4:00Speaker 1: kid and in line at a grocery store, it seemed
- 4:04Speaker 1: that every damn magazine cover was just plastered with these headlines.
- 4:09Speaker 1: And I don't know what the hell to make of it.
- 4:12Speaker 1: I didn't believe it, that's for sure, but you know,
- 4:14Speaker 1: reconsidering them now as an adult. These headlines, these conspiracies,
- 4:20Speaker 1: I should say, they remind me of the conspiracies that
- 4:23Speaker 1: I'm currently researching this week, These conspiracies surrounding Lady Gaga.
- 4:29Speaker 1: Lady Gaga is just too damn famous and too compelling,
- 4:34Speaker 1: too interesting for the public to not fabricate wild stories
- 4:39Speaker 1: that supposedly explain her success. Lady Gaga is part of
- 4:44Speaker 1: the Illuminati, Lady Gaga stole her musical identity from Lena Morgana,
- 4:48Speaker 1: and now Lena Morgana's dead. Lady Gaga has a penis.
- 4:51Speaker 1: All of these are real conspiracy theories, even that last one.
- 4:54Speaker 1: I swear to God and wait to hear what she
- 4:56Speaker 1: had to do to disprove it. So there's a correlation,
- 4:59Speaker 1: I think, between the conspiracy theories around Lady Gaga and Elvis. Okay,
- 5:03Speaker 1: but back to Elvis. Now, I believe for years, as
- 5:07Speaker 1: I'm sure that a lot of you have, that the
- 5:09Speaker 1: reason that these conspiracies about Elvis still being alive, the
- 5:13Speaker 1: reason that they sprung up, is because, like Lady Gaga,
- 5:15Speaker 1: Elvis was just too damn famous, too big, and when
- 5:19Speaker 1: he died, he was too beloved for the public to
- 5:21Speaker 1: fully let go of him. And I think I think
- 5:24Speaker 1: there's some truth to that assumption of mind, to that
- 5:27Speaker 1: hypothesis that that's why these Elvis is Alive theories continued
- 5:31Speaker 1: to thrive. But I didn't know until today that there
- 5:35Speaker 1: was another reason, an event, an actual event that took
- 5:39Speaker 1: place the year after Elvis passed that kicked off this
- 5:43Speaker 1: crazy thinking that allowed the conspiracies to first take root
- 5:47Speaker 1: and spread like these wicked weeds throughout our culture. And
- 5:51Speaker 1: that event is the bizarre story of Orion, who was
- 5:58Speaker 1: Orion Well in nineteen seventy eight, the year after Elvis
- 6:03Speaker 1: Presley died. Orion was a Sun Records musical artist who
- 6:08Speaker 1: looked and sounded a lot like Elvis. Presley, and I
- 6:12Speaker 1: mean a lot. Sun Records was, of course, the label
- 6:16Speaker 1: that first recorded Elvis Presley, the record company that made
- 6:19Speaker 1: Elvis Presley famous, the record company that put Elvis's hometown
- 6:24Speaker 1: of Memphis, Tennessee, on the map. And here it was
- 6:28Speaker 1: Sun Records in nineteen seventy eight, again just a year
- 6:30Speaker 1: after Elvis died, and Son was promoting one of its
- 6:35Speaker 1: new artists, an artist who looked and sounded an awful
- 6:39Speaker 1: lot like the King, the only difference being that this artist, Orion,
- 6:44Speaker 1: wore a mask, and that this masked man who looked
- 6:48Speaker 1: and sounded like Elvis, refused to answer the question of
- 6:51Speaker 1: whether or not he was Elvis, answering only the quote
- 6:55Speaker 1: he was Orion. Now, despite how much Orion looked, even
- 7:01Speaker 1: with the mask, and sounded like Elvis Presley, it was
- 7:04Speaker 1: obvious to anyone of sound mind that this was not
- 7:08Speaker 1: Elvis Presley, and that Elvis, by nineteen seventy eight, was
- 7:11Speaker 1: dead and in the ground. But the name Orion, the
- 7:16Speaker 1: name Orionrion had a special significance in nineteen seventy eight.
- 7:24Speaker 1: The name Orion in nineteen seventy eight wasn't just the
- 7:28Speaker 1: name of what looked to be like the first Elvis
- 7:31Speaker 1: impersonator of note. Orion was also the name of a
- 7:35Speaker 1: character in a recently published work of fiction about a
- 7:39Speaker 1: rock star trapped by his own fame who kills himself
- 7:44Speaker 1: to escape. Now, all of this may seem strange, but
- 7:48Speaker 1: in the case of Orion, the truth, as I say,
- 7:51Speaker 1: is stranger than fiction. Because the man who was Orion,
- 7:55Speaker 1: who many claimed to be Elvis, that dude, was murdered,
- 8:00Speaker 1: and by the time that happened in nineteen ninety eight,
- 8:04Speaker 1: it was too late. Part of the public had already
- 8:06Speaker 1: taken the bait and firmly believed that Elvis Presley was
- 8:10Speaker 1: as O'Rion established back in nineteen seventy eight, alive Elvis
- 8:15Speaker 1: spotted at Butte, Montana gas station. Elvis's tomb is empty,
- 8:18Speaker 1: Elvis dead at sixty three. That last headline Elvis dead
- 8:24Speaker 1: at sixty three that came in nineteen ninety eight. Elvis
- 8:27Speaker 1: Presley would have been sixty three years old in nineteen
- 8:30Speaker 1: ninety eight, nineteen ninety eight, the same year Orian died, and,
- 8:36Speaker 1: to put a finer point on it, the same year
- 8:39Speaker 1: that Orion was murdered. More on this incredible story. The
- 8:44Speaker 1: story of Orion, the artists who launched the many Elvis's
- 8:46Speaker 1: Alive conspiracy theories, including the music that Orion made, the
- 8:50Speaker 1: life that Orion lived, why folks firmly believed Orion was Elvis,
- 8:55Speaker 1: how he ended up on Sun Records, and the true
- 8:58Speaker 1: crime that resulted in this musician in o'rion's death. All
- 9:02Speaker 1: that coming up in the exclusive section of this bonus episode.
- 9:05Speaker 1: So go to disgrace landpod dot com to sign up
- 9:07Speaker 1: to become a member. You can hear this exclusive content
- 9:10Speaker 1: and more and unlock ad for you listening as well.
- 9:13Speaker 1: All Right, this week in Disgraceland, we did something different.
- 9:17Speaker 1: We previewed the coming season of new episodes that are
- 9:21Speaker 1: on their way to you in the next few months.
- 9:23Speaker 1: Stories on Johnny Thunders or the New York Dolls, the
- 9:25Speaker 1: Runaways me as a pot of the gets and a
- 9:28Speaker 1: bunch more. If you want to hear all about the
- 9:30Speaker 1: approach that we're taking to these subjects and the crimes
- 9:33Speaker 1: and the transgressions that we're going to detail, make sure
- 9:36Speaker 1: you listen to the latest episode of Disgraceland now coming
- 9:40Speaker 1: up in the rewind slot right after this bonus episode,
- 9:42Speaker 1: We're diving back into the story of Chet Baker in
- 9:45Speaker 1: Chet's Mysterious Death and Life of True Crime, a story
- 9:48Speaker 1: that happens in and around Chet Baker's incredible output as
- 9:52Speaker 1: one of the greatest, I'll say it, one of the
- 9:55Speaker 1: greatest voices in jazz music history. I know people don't
- 9:58Speaker 1: agree with me on that, but you know whatever, we're
- 10:00Speaker 1: just going to have to disagree now. I chose this
- 10:03Speaker 1: story to rewind this week because of its similarities with
- 10:08Speaker 1: our new Disgrace Land episode next week on Johnny Thunders.
- 10:12Speaker 1: Johnny Thunders and Chet Baker both were intense junkies, Both
- 10:16Speaker 1: were avatars of musician excess, Both were, as Johnny Thunders
- 10:22Speaker 1: famously said, born to lose, and both of their deaths
- 10:25Speaker 1: are shrouded in mystery. In the case of Chet Baker,
- 10:28Speaker 1: I'm not sure anyone really knows how he died, which
- 10:31Speaker 1: after all these years is pretty incredible. And when you're
- 10:36Speaker 1: listening to the Johnny Thunders episode the new one, be
- 10:38Speaker 1: thinking about those first generation punk bands, many of whom
- 10:44Speaker 1: loved Chet Baker. By the way, now, of course Johnny's
- 10:47Speaker 1: band New York Dolls, there's the sex Pistols, the Ramones,
- 10:51Speaker 1: the Stooges, even Velvet Underground, and let me know which
- 10:55Speaker 1: of these bands, which of these first generation punk bands
- 10:58Speaker 1: you think had the biggest influence on the future of
- 11:02Speaker 1: rock and roll, on what rock and roll became afterward
- 11:04Speaker 1: in the a's and the nineties and the two thousands,
- 11:07Speaker 1: and what rock and roll is now? Whose legacy of
- 11:09Speaker 1: those first generation punk bands, whose legacy is most important?
- 11:14Speaker 1: Was it the New York Dolls, Was it the Stooges,
- 11:15Speaker 1: the Ramones? Was it somebody else that I'm not mentioning here.
- 11:19Speaker 1: I want to know let me know six one seven
- 11:21Speaker 1: nine oh six six sixty three eight, voicemail and text.
- 11:24Speaker 1: I'm also taking questions on how you think Johnny Thunders died,
- 11:27Speaker 1: how you think Chet Baker died, And as always, we're
- 11:30Speaker 1: going to feature your answers in next week's after Party
- 11:33Speaker 1: Bonus episode. Okay, coming up right after this short break,
- 11:36Speaker 1: we hear from you with your text, your voicemails, all
- 11:38Speaker 1: that stuff coming up in just a bit. Apple podcast
- 12:05Speaker 1: listener lazy r Squared, if you're listening, get in touch
- 12:10Speaker 1: with me all right, text me six one seven nine
- 12:13Speaker 1: oh six six six three eight. I saw your review
- 12:15Speaker 1: on Apple Podcasts. I thought it was very well said,
- 12:18Speaker 1: it spoke to me and I want to get you
- 12:19Speaker 1: some free merch. Same goes for Matt Bell on Spotify,
- 12:23Speaker 1: who's been digging into the archive and wrote the following
- 12:25Speaker 1: about our Ariana Grande episode. Matt Bell wrote, this one
- 12:30Speaker 1: was really powerful, my god, well written and well executed. Guys.
- 12:34Speaker 1: I'll be thinking about this story today. Matt Bell on Spotify.
- 12:37Speaker 1: Same goes for you. Hit me up via text okay
- 12:40Speaker 1: six one seven nine oh six six six three eight
- 12:44Speaker 1: and I'll get you some merch. Lazy Er Squared going
- 12:47Speaker 1: to get you some merch as well. We hear at
- 12:49Speaker 1: Double Elvis appreciate the reviews on Apple Podcasts and Spotify,
- 12:54Speaker 1: and not just because I'm an egomaniac narcissist who loves
- 12:57Speaker 1: hearing about how frickin' awesome I think I am. I'm
- 13:00Speaker 1: kidding though I am. Certainly no, I'm not, but mainly
- 13:03Speaker 1: because the real reason is the activity that writing and
- 13:06Speaker 1: posting a review creates. It helps the podcast app algorithms
- 13:11Speaker 1: better ranked Disgraceland, and that turns more people onto the show.
- 13:15Speaker 1: It helps with discovery. It's super important. So yeah, the
- 13:18Speaker 1: reviews are helpful. In addition to stroking our egos. Also,
- 13:23Speaker 1: I've got a storage space that I need to downsize,
- 13:25Speaker 1: and that means I got to get rid of some
- 13:27Speaker 1: of this Disgraceland merch that I have in boxes. I
- 13:30Speaker 1: don't know a lot of it. I got some T shirts,
- 13:32Speaker 1: I got some pins, I got some books, and I'm
- 13:35Speaker 1: not sure what merch you'll get if you leave a
- 13:38Speaker 1: review for us. That's right, I'm talking to all of
- 13:41Speaker 1: you now, not just talking to Matt Bell. I'm not
- 13:43Speaker 1: just talking to lazy er Square and talking to all
- 13:45Speaker 1: of you guys. Leave a review, even if you've left
- 13:46Speaker 1: one in the past, leave a new one, and it'll
- 13:49Speaker 1: pop up at the top of the review feed. That's
- 13:51Speaker 1: going to rank Disgrace Land higher. It's going to turn
- 13:53Speaker 1: more people onto the show. I'm going to see it,
- 13:57Speaker 1: And if I read it here next week or in
- 13:59Speaker 1: the coming weeks, that means you're going to get some
- 14:01Speaker 1: free merch. Now, I can't promise you what that merch
- 14:03Speaker 1: will be, but I can promise you that it will
- 14:05Speaker 1: be cool. So leave a review for Disgrace on Apple
- 14:08Speaker 1: Podcasts or Spotify. Listen to the after party next week.
- 14:12Speaker 1: If I read your review, get in touch with me
- 14:13Speaker 1: by sending me a text to six one seven nine
- 14:16Speaker 1: oh six six sixty three eight, and I will send
- 14:19Speaker 1: you some merch. It's that simple, all right. Speaking of
- 14:22Speaker 1: your texts, the three to oho three writes in Jake
- 14:26Speaker 1: literal loll when you said you mix up Bette Midler
- 14:29Speaker 1: and Barber streisand I can see it. Yeah, I can't
- 14:31Speaker 1: remember what I was saying this in relation to three
- 14:34Speaker 1: oh three? Was it in relation to Lady Gaga? I
- 14:36Speaker 1: can't remember, because she kind of reminds me of a
- 14:38Speaker 1: modern day version of both of both those incredible artists
- 14:43Speaker 1: in her own way. I mean, Lady Gaga is so versatile.
- 14:45Speaker 1: I know some of you hear that, They're like, what
- 14:47Speaker 1: what the hell are you talking about? But I don't know.
- 14:48Speaker 1: I see it. I'm reading an incredible book, right, I
- 14:50Speaker 1: mentioned earlier that I'm researching Lady Gaga. I'm reading It's
- 14:53Speaker 1: the book is so good, so good, a great book
- 14:57Speaker 1: called poker Face, The Rise and Rise of Lady Gaga
- 15:01Speaker 1: by Marie Callahan, who I think is just fantastic. And
- 15:06Speaker 1: you know, a lot of you may already know this
- 15:08Speaker 1: about Lady Gaga, but she's got this fascinating backstory. Much
- 15:11Speaker 1: of which she's mythologized herself. And there's a lot of
- 15:14Speaker 1: sketchy details in there, what's true, what's not, what does
- 15:17Speaker 1: she make up, etc. But one thing that is for
- 15:20Speaker 1: certain is that Lady Gaga was down in the Lower
- 15:23Speaker 1: East Side of New York in the mid aughts two
- 15:26Speaker 1: thousand and six ish seven ish two thousand and five
- 15:29Speaker 1: sixty seven, in that era, the same era that I
- 15:33Speaker 1: was down there playing a bunch of shows, had a
- 15:35Speaker 1: bunch of friends who were living down there, and a
- 15:38Speaker 1: bunch of friends from Boston who were also traveling down
- 15:40Speaker 1: there and playing shows. And I know that era and
- 15:43Speaker 1: location of New York very well because, like I said,
- 15:46Speaker 1: it was there in the way that Marie Callahan, the
- 15:49Speaker 1: author here of Poker Face, the way she depicts that
- 15:54Speaker 1: time and place is as good, if not better than
- 15:59Speaker 1: Meet Me in the Bathroom, which which is a fantastic
- 16:02Speaker 1: book about that era by Lizzie Goodman, another fantastic author.
- 16:07Speaker 1: Like I said, this book it's I don't want to
- 16:11Speaker 1: say it's better, but it depicts the era in a
- 16:15Speaker 1: different way, a completely compelling way, and specifically, I don't
- 16:19Speaker 1: know what it was like for you guys, but I
- 16:21Speaker 1: remember waking up in like two thousand and six, two
- 16:23Speaker 1: thousand and seven, and and just looking around and going,
- 16:27Speaker 1: wait a minute, dance music is cool with indye kids.
- 16:32Speaker 1: How did this happen? Because I've always thought the dance
- 16:35Speaker 1: music was cool, but it was something that was completely
- 16:37Speaker 1: derided by the underground scene, the underground hardcore punk indie scene,
- 16:41Speaker 1: et cetera. And then all of a sudden, you know,
- 16:43Speaker 1: we had in the early two thousands, you have in
- 16:45Speaker 1: New York, you have the whole electroclash thing. But then
- 16:48Speaker 1: you know, by the mid two thousands, the mid adds
- 16:52Speaker 1: i should say, it kind of transitions into this this
- 16:56Speaker 1: dance thing that is no longer ironic, and it was
- 17:00Speaker 1: a weird thing that I've never really been able to
- 17:02Speaker 1: fully articulate in my head. And Marie Callahan articulates that
- 17:06Speaker 1: transition within the context of Lady Gaga's come up story
- 17:10Speaker 1: down there in the Lower East Side at that exact moment.
- 17:13Speaker 1: It's fascinating. I'm about, I don't know, cord maybe a
- 17:16Speaker 1: third of the way through the book, and I can't
- 17:18Speaker 1: can't wait to get back to it later this afternoon. Again.
- 17:20Speaker 1: That's poker Faced, The Rise and Rise of Lady Gaga.
- 17:24Speaker 1: I'll have our Lady Gaga episode for you guys in
- 17:26Speaker 1: a couple of weeks. Can't wait for you to hear
- 17:29Speaker 1: that six one seven nine oh six six six three eight.
- 17:32Speaker 1: You want to get at me with anything voicemail or
- 17:34Speaker 1: text of five to one four text and hey, Jake,
- 17:36Speaker 1: it's Davis from the five to one four. Hope all
- 17:38Speaker 1: is well and all the best to you and the
- 17:40Speaker 1: team at Disgrace, and I'm looking forward to what's coming
- 17:42Speaker 1: our way in twenty twenty six. I've been thinking it
- 17:45Speaker 1: would be cool to hear an episode about Black Flag,
- 17:48Speaker 1: the really important piece of American punk and hardcore history
- 17:50Speaker 1: and played a huge role in establishing the DIY touring
- 17:54Speaker 1: circuit in the country. Yes, they have, and I really
- 17:57Speaker 1: want to do an episode on Black Flag. I also
- 18:00Speaker 1: want to do an episode on Henry Rowins himself, and
- 18:05Speaker 1: you know he's not They're not. Neither are on the
- 18:08Speaker 1: schedule right now. However, I was looking at the schedule
- 18:12Speaker 1: for the middle and later part of the year this
- 18:15Speaker 1: morning actually, and I saw a couple of artists on there.
- 18:17Speaker 1: I was like, I don't know if I want to
- 18:19Speaker 1: I don't want to do that, so maybe Davis, maybe
- 18:24Speaker 1: Black Flag will be slotted in instead Davis. If you
- 18:28Speaker 1: or anyone else wants a more formal role in the
- 18:32Speaker 1: deciding of what episodes we cover, become a Patreon member,
- 18:36Speaker 1: and we were developing away for us to all beyond
- 18:41Speaker 1: the after party, get together a couple of times a
- 18:43Speaker 1: year to meet up and to roll up our sleeves
- 18:47Speaker 1: and talk about which episodes we want to talk about.
- 18:50Speaker 1: And this is going to give a handful of you,
- 18:52Speaker 1: or however many of us who sign up a direct
- 18:55Speaker 1: access in the choosing of our programming and which episodes
- 18:59Speaker 1: we cover. All right. Eighth five Sherry F text in Hey,
- 19:04Speaker 1: what actor's death hit me the hardest? Is Matthew Perry.
- 19:09Speaker 1: As a baby of gen X friends raised me. I
- 19:12Speaker 1: literally have the same tattoo as Rachel, and out of
- 19:15Speaker 1: everyone's character, Chandler was the most relatable. It was more
- 19:19Speaker 1: than just a show. And reading Matthew's book, you could
- 19:20Speaker 1: feel his pain. It took a piece of my adolescence
- 19:23Speaker 1: and young adulthood when he passed, and I still get
- 19:25Speaker 1: emotional watching him and you can see his pain and
- 19:29Speaker 1: growth season to season. That's for Sherry F. In the
- 19:32Speaker 1: Central Coast of California. Sherry, I'm not sure if you're
- 19:36Speaker 1: responding to an older after party episode or if you're
- 19:39Speaker 1: responding to something that Zeth might have asked in this
- 19:43Speaker 1: week's Hollywood Land, which I haven't listened to the whole
- 19:46Speaker 1: thing yet. I'll listen to the beginning. I know it's
- 19:48Speaker 1: on River Phoenix. The wrap party episode is on the
- 19:52Speaker 1: River Phoenix episode of Hollywood Land. Both are in that
- 19:54Speaker 1: feed this week. I suspect maybe Zeth pose that question,
- 19:58Speaker 1: but I wanted to. I wanted to read your text, Sherry,
- 20:01Speaker 1: because I'm not sure if you're aware or not that
- 20:05Speaker 1: we have an episode on Matthew Perry. I'm quite proud
- 20:08Speaker 1: of it. It's one of those you know, I heard
- 20:11Speaker 1: this thing the other day. I was I was at
- 20:14Speaker 1: Mass actually on Sunday, and I heard part of the
- 20:17Speaker 1: homily was that, you know, a lot of people think
- 20:20Speaker 1: that they need to use their work to do well,
- 20:24Speaker 1: and of course that's that's true, but there's also another
- 20:27Speaker 1: piece of our work, and and that sometimes we can
- 20:31Speaker 1: we can hear, we can hear bigger truths, we can
- 20:35Speaker 1: hear directly from from the Big Man through our work,
- 20:39Speaker 1: and this Matthew Perry episode that we did was an
- 20:43Speaker 1: example of that was an example of of me learning
- 20:46Speaker 1: a lot, not only learning a lot but about Matthew
- 20:49Speaker 1: Perry and about addiction, but also learning a lot about
- 20:53Speaker 1: myself and some past grief. And I don't get heavy with,
- 20:58Speaker 1: you know, any of the me stuff, not in that
- 21:00Speaker 1: episode talking about me very much at all, but it
- 21:03Speaker 1: really kind of unlocked unlock some things about myself that
- 21:07Speaker 1: I wasn't aware of and about this horrible, horrible disease.
- 21:11Speaker 1: I think Matthew Perry was a pretty incredible guy. Beyond
- 21:15Speaker 1: his talent, I think what he did for people who
- 21:18Speaker 1: suffer from this disease is pretty impressive. And I think
- 21:21Speaker 1: the way that he died was pretty disgraceful. And I
- 21:24Speaker 1: invite you, Sherry, to check out that episode if you
- 21:27Speaker 1: haven't already, and to anyone who hasn't listened to that episode,
- 21:30Speaker 1: go ahead and listen. I believe it's still in the
- 21:31Speaker 1: Disgrace Land Feed, not in the Hollywood Land feeds. In
- 21:35Speaker 1: the Disgrace Sland feed, just search up Matthew Perry and
- 21:37Speaker 1: matt will have the episode notes for you in the
- 21:41Speaker 1: show notes section of this here bonus episode. Speaking of
- 21:45Speaker 1: Hollywood Land one thing I have to mention is Zeth,
- 21:48Speaker 1: who's doing the real bang up job over there. This happens.
- 21:52Speaker 1: You know, he got on the mic to record the
- 21:55Speaker 1: rap party, and you know, we know we sit at
- 21:58Speaker 1: these desks and we have multiple microphones set up for
- 22:00Speaker 1: multiple things that we're doing, and Zeth recorded that entire
- 22:03Speaker 1: episode with the wrong mic. So it might sound a
- 22:05Speaker 1: little a little diy, it might sound a little a
- 22:08Speaker 1: little mid Aughts Lower East Side for you guys, But
- 22:12Speaker 1: it's not about the sound. It's about what the man
- 22:15Speaker 1: is saying. So if you're hearing that and you're wondering
- 22:17Speaker 1: what the hell's going on, it's just you know, Zeth
- 22:19Speaker 1: was using one of his distortion pedals for this episode,
- 22:21Speaker 1: and you know it sounds sounds pretty badass. So so
- 22:24Speaker 1: that's what's happening there. But again, it's about what the
- 22:27Speaker 1: man was saying. Here's a little taste, Matt, why don't
- 22:30Speaker 1: you give the disco as a little taste of what's
- 22:31Speaker 1: going on in Hollywood Land in the in the Wrap
- 22:33Speaker 1: party this week?
- 22:35Speaker 3: In the introduction to this week's full episode on River Phoenix.
- 22:38Speaker 3: Hopefully you've heard that already. I'm talking, of course about
- 22:41Speaker 3: the short intros I record for each of our fully
- 22:43Speaker 3: scripted sound design episodes that come out on Mondays that
- 22:46Speaker 3: are narrated not by me but by Jake Brennan. I basically,
- 22:50Speaker 3: in this intro quickly made the case for River Phoenix
- 22:53Speaker 3: being a one of one, not only an incredible actor,
- 22:55Speaker 3: but also that rare representation of popular culture in the
- 22:59Speaker 3: very moment that culture is shifting into something different. For River,
- 23:03Speaker 3: it was the transition from the nineteen eighties into the
- 23:07Speaker 3: nineties and his screen presence, his taste in the movies
- 23:11Speaker 3: and roles he took on. It was that era. He
- 23:14Speaker 3: wasn't Corey Feldman or Fred Savage or Alyssa Milano or
- 23:18Speaker 3: Drew Barrymore. Absolutely no shade thrown at any of those actors,
- 23:22Speaker 3: by the way, but River found a different gear, and
- 23:25Speaker 3: I think they would all probably agree with that if
- 23:29Speaker 3: they were being honest. Probably the actor who comes closest,
- 23:33Speaker 3: probably Ethan Hawke. I guess now that I'm thinking more
- 23:36Speaker 3: about that, But I stand by what I said about River,
- 23:40Speaker 3: and I also stand by what I said about how
- 23:43Speaker 3: when he died on Halloween Night in nineteen ninety three,
- 23:46Speaker 3: and then his death was followed very quickly by the
- 23:49Speaker 3: death of Kurt Cobaine that something in the culture was
- 23:52Speaker 3: forever changed. It was the end of an era, so
- 23:55Speaker 3: to speak, a very short era that had barely lasted
- 23:58Speaker 3: a decade.
- 24:00Speaker 1: All right, that is hollywood Land. Make sure you are
- 24:02Speaker 1: subscribed to the hollywood Land feed on Apple Podcasts, Spotify,
- 24:06Speaker 1: the iHeartRadio app, wherever you get your podcasts. You're not
- 24:10Speaker 1: only going to get archive episodes of hollywood Land with
- 24:13Speaker 1: me behind the mic, You're also going to get our

- 24:19Speaker 1: Zeth's Rap Party, and our new addition to hollywood Land,
- 24:23Speaker 1: this screening Room, which is going to tie everything together
- 24:26Speaker 1: for you. Okay, you're going to get a full week
- 24:29Speaker 1: of fantastic movie history and movie analysis from none other
- 24:35Speaker 1: than doctor Zeth Lundy. Subscribe to hollywood Land. I'll be
- 24:38Speaker 1: back in a flash with exciting news for one particular
- 24:41Speaker 1: member of the disco community. You're not going to want
- 24:43Speaker 1: to miss this, all right. We are halfway through this
- 24:59Speaker 1: bonus episode. I gotta say it's it's flying by. I'm
- 25:03Speaker 1: drinking some incredible coffee. Great. I love that. I love
- 25:10Speaker 1: when the espresso machine is just working perfectly. It's got
- 25:12Speaker 1: the right amount of pressure. The Americano comes out like hmm,
- 25:16Speaker 1: it's just like it's it's it's a little extra and
- 25:18Speaker 1: I can't I don't know what I did different, same
- 25:21Speaker 1: beans I've been using for the last week. But this
- 25:22Speaker 1: cup of coffee just magnificent. Anyhow, not what I'm here
- 25:26Speaker 1: to talk about. What I'm here to talk about is
- 25:28Speaker 1: that last week, if you listened to the after Party,
- 25:31Speaker 1: you heard me discussing this Disgraceland listener named Mark. Now,
- 25:36Speaker 1: Mark wrote in texted actually six one seven nine, I
- 25:39Speaker 1: was six six sixty three eight. Mark knows the number.
- 25:42Speaker 1: Mark texted and shared a playlist that he's been curating
- 25:47Speaker 1: that is a collection of all the songs mentioned in
- 25:52Speaker 1: our episodes of Disgraceland, going all the way back to
- 25:55Speaker 1: episode one. This is incredible. This is so much work.
- 26:01Speaker 1: This playlist is amazing. I shouldn't say it's all the songs.
- 26:03Speaker 1: Excuse me. He hasn't finished this yet, Okay, but again,
- 26:08Speaker 1: Mark is pulling every tune that we mentioned that he
- 26:11Speaker 1: can find on Apple Music, every tune that we mentioned
- 26:14Speaker 1: in our episodes, and putting them into what is so
- 26:17Speaker 1: far our a ten hour playlist Now. I just checked
- 26:19Speaker 1: the playlist again a moment ago on Apple Music and
- 26:22Speaker 1: it's already been updated today. All right, here's just a handful.
- 26:29Speaker 1: Let's talk a handful of songs that are on this playlist.
- 26:33Speaker 1: And again, it's not just songs by the artists. It's
- 26:35Speaker 1: not just the number one songs that I mentioned, although
- 26:38Speaker 1: they're all in there. Okay, let's just see it. Gloria
- 26:41Speaker 1: by Them, Waterfalls by TLC, Let's talk about sex by
- 26:46Speaker 1: Salt and Peppa Cocksucker Blues by The Rolling Stones, Shape

- 27:33Speaker 1: later this week. Now, Mark, he writes, is a courier
- 27:38Speaker 1: who drives twenty five hundred miles a week and boasts
- 27:42Speaker 1: an oil change every two weeks. So dude has some
- 27:45Speaker 1: time to listen to some disgraceland and he's putting it
- 27:48Speaker 1: to good use. Mark. I'm super grateful Man. Mark writes that, Hey,
- 27:53Speaker 1: I'm absolutely gonna keep going with the playlist. It's such
- 27:56Speaker 1: a cool cross section of popular music. Like it's a
- 27:58Speaker 1: guy from High Fidel that he was alive today. This
- 28:01Speaker 1: would be the record collection he's snorting sorting. Excuse me, Wait,
- 28:05Speaker 1: the guy from High Fidelity died. He didn't die, But
- 28:07Speaker 1: I know what you mean. Anyhow, Yeah, I love that.
- 28:11Speaker 1: I could hear. I could see those dudes in High
- 28:14Speaker 1: Fidelity listening to this playlist in a Champion Records. They're
- 28:19Speaker 1: a record store or is it Top five Records? I
- 28:22Speaker 1: can't remember. I think it's a Champion, isn't it. I
