- 0:00Speaker 1: President Trump will sit down and talk one on one
- 0:02Speaker 1: with Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelenski today at the White House,
- 0:07Speaker 1: just one day after an hour's long phone call with
- 0:10Speaker 1: Russian President Vladimir Putin. Mister Trump says he and Putin
- 0:13Speaker 1: agreed to meet in Budapest in the coming weeks to
- 0:16Speaker 1: discuss a way to bring an end to the war
- 0:18Speaker 1: in Ukraine. The President was asked about that phone call
- 0:21Speaker 1: yesterday in the Oval Office, and I thought it was
- 0:24Speaker 1: a very good phone call. I thought very productive. But
- 0:27Speaker 1: I'll be meeting with President Putin and we'll make a
- 0:31Speaker 1: determination to say it within two weeks or so, pretty quick.
- 0:35Speaker 1: And we've got team coverage on this for you this morning.
- 0:37Speaker 1: Raimi and Osensio is in our London bureau. But let's
- 0:40Speaker 1: begin with Natalie Brand live at the White House. Good morning, Natalie,
- 0:43Speaker 1: So help us understand mister Trump's strategy in setting up
- 0:46Speaker 1: a direct meeting with Putin and Hungary before his one
- 0:50Speaker 1: on one time with Zelenski.
- 0:53Speaker 2: Good morning, Errol.
- 0:54Speaker 3: Well, this seemed to be a calculation by Russian President
- 0:57Speaker 3: Putin to speak to President Trump have his ear before
- 1:01Speaker 3: this key meeting with Ukraine's president Zelenski when you know
- 1:06Speaker 3: Tomahawk long range missiles are expected to be on the agenda.
- 1:10Speaker 3: That's something Russia does not want Ukraine to get. And remember, Eryl,
- 1:15Speaker 3: In recent weeks, we've heard President Trump sharpen his language
- 1:19Speaker 3: against Putin as he's been frustrated with stalled negotiations and
- 1:25Speaker 3: increased attacks on Ukraine. Now, after this phone call yesterday,
- 1:29Speaker 3: we're hearing the President signal that he's hopeful for, you know,
- 1:33Speaker 3: a new round of talk, saying that he hopes to
- 1:36Speaker 3: meet with Putin or is expecting to meet with Putin
- 1:39Speaker 3: maybe as soon as two weeks from now in Hungary,
- 1:43Speaker 3: that his Secretary of State Marco Rubio, will be meeting
- 1:46Speaker 3: with his Russian counterpart sometime very soon, as soon as
- 1:50Speaker 3: next week.
- 1:51Speaker 2: And recall, we had.
- 1:53Speaker 3: Not too long ago, back in August, that big summit
- 1:56Speaker 3: in Alaska between President Trump and Putin, and you know.
- 2:01Speaker 2: Really not much came out of that.
- 2:03Speaker 3: The President, when asked why he thinks why will this
- 2:06Speaker 3: time be different, he believes that meeting set the stage.
- 2:10Speaker 3: We also know that talk at the White House and
- 2:13Speaker 3: the hope of Zelensky is for a direct meeting between
- 2:16Speaker 3: Putin and Zolensky President Trump, saying that because the two
- 2:20Speaker 3: have such a terrible relationship, that may not be possible,
- 2:24Speaker 3: that might be tough, but there would be these separate
- 2:27Speaker 3: but equal talks. One other thing to note, Eryl, is
- 2:31Speaker 3: yesterday over on Capitol Hill, the Senate Majority Leader John
- 2:35Speaker 3: Thune brought up the sanctions bill regarding Russia and said
- 2:39Speaker 3: now might be the time to.
- 2:41Speaker 2: Move it, that he would like to see it move.
- 2:43Speaker 3: And get a vote on the Senate floor. The President,
- 2:47Speaker 3: when asked about that, said he was going to be
- 2:49Speaker 3: speaking to the Republican leaders over on Capitol Hill, that
- 2:52Speaker 3: it would be.
- 2:52Speaker 2: His option and the timing may not be perfect just yet.
- 2:57Speaker 1: Eryl, very interesting, Natalie, thank you more on this. Let's
- 3:00Speaker 1: jump to CBS News Foreign Cars. Mont Ramy and Osensio
- 3:03Speaker 1: in London Bureau. Good morning, Ramy. We heard Natalie then
- 3:06Speaker 1: mentioned long range missiles. What specifically is Ukraine's president asking
- 3:12Speaker 1: for and trying to get out of this visit to Washington.
- 3:15Speaker 4: Right, Eryl, Good morning, and yes, this is US aerial hardware,
- 3:19Speaker 4: not just for defense but also for offense. And this
- 3:22Speaker 4: is expected to include things like short and long range missiles,
- 3:26Speaker 4: potentially fighter jets as well. American detection system so they
- 3:31Speaker 4: can wean themselves off Soviet systems, and then there's discussion
- 3:35Speaker 4: about the production of drones. Now. Vladimerzlenski already met representatives
- 3:41Speaker 4: from Lockheed Martin and Raytheon in the United States to
- 3:45Speaker 4: see him. They're shaking hands, beaming a smile, and his
- 3:48Speaker 4: ex account was pretty busy last night, showing that Lockheed Martin,
- 3:52Speaker 4: for example, makes F sixteen fighter jets, Lockheed and Raytheon
- 3:57Speaker 4: together make the systems, make the parts for Patriot missile
- 4:00Speaker 4: systems to shoot down Russian missiles, and then raithel On specifically,
- 4:04Speaker 4: as Natalie was talking about, makes Tomahawks for those long
- 4:08Speaker 4: range offensive capabilities that really could hit Moscow. At this point,
- 4:11Speaker 4: though it appears Trump is walking back that possibility after
- 4:15Speaker 4: his call with Putin, but Zelensky put out a post
- 4:17Speaker 4: on x specifically about the call, saying that Putin is
- 4:20Speaker 4: no braver than Hamas or any other terrorist. The language
- 4:24Speaker 4: of strength will work against Russia best, and that he
- 4:27Speaker 4: can see that Moscow is rushing to talk about dialogue
- 4:31Speaker 4: when he hears about Tomawks there. At the same time,
- 4:35Speaker 4: Zlensky was in Washington, though Russia kept up its attacks
- 4:39Speaker 4: on Ukraine overnight as Lensky himself said that his hometown.
- 4:42Speaker 2: Of krivy Re was hit.
- 4:43Speaker 4: People we saw shopping in the dark for supplies. Russia's
- 4:48Speaker 4: ramping up of its attacks on Ukraine's energy grid continuing
- 4:51Speaker 4: on here on x Lensky also brought that up, saying,
- 4:54Speaker 4: in fact, not a single night really in recent weeks
- 4:57Speaker 4: has passed without strikes. Most of them are infra structure
- 5:00Speaker 4: against the energy sector. And you know, just yesterday we
- 5:03Speaker 4: were talking about how eight regions across Ukraine were hit
- 5:07Speaker 4: and earlier this week thirty thousand people lost energy. Last
- 5:10Speaker 4: week about a million people lost power. So again, this
- 5:14Speaker 4: is what the fourth winter that we're going into since
- 5:18Speaker 4: Russia invaded Ukraine, that Ukraine is trying to figure out
- 5:21Speaker 4: its energy systems.
- 5:23Speaker 1: It's important reminder that that wool rages on every day.
- 5:26Speaker 1: And just in a last few moments, Raimi, why meet
- 5:30Speaker 1: Putin in Budapest for President Trump?
- 5:33Speaker 4: Sure, first it was Alaska right two weeks two months ago.
- 5:37Speaker 4: Rather now Hungary Victor Orban the Prime minister, basically has
- 5:41Speaker 4: pretty good ties to both Trump and Putin, So that's
- 5:44Speaker 4: probably one thing, a personal thing there. Hungary is seen
- 5:47Speaker 4: as one of the most Russia friendly NATO nations really,
- 5:51Speaker 4: if not the most.
- 5:52Speaker 2: For Trump, Orbon backed him for.
- 5:55Speaker 4: President twenty sixteen and twenty twenty four and also for
- 5:58Speaker 4: putin Hungary, a signal he would be a restaurant on
- 6:00Speaker 4: soil because remember he still faces that a restaurant from
- 6:03Speaker 4: the ICC.
- 6:04Speaker 1: All right, Raimi with important updates from London, Ramie. Thanks
