- 0:00What was your physio for?
- 0:02On my Achilles.
- 0:03Oh, I'm still going through that shit.
- 0:07I was waiting for something healthy there, Ross.
- 0:11It must have been by the look of his face.
- 0:12Yeah, it's desired to be.
- 0:16Oh, it burns though.
- 0:18What is it?
- 0:21Ginger.
- 0:24That's the burning sensation.
- 0:25Turmeric.
- 0:26Hey, that is healthy.
- 0:27That's super healthy.
- 0:29A bit of black pepper, a little bit of cayenne pepper as well, which is the one that burns you.
- 0:32Fantastic.
- 0:33Yeah.
- 0:33You're planning on like a leasing your arsehole or something.
- 0:39Honey.
- 0:39Just keep everything moving, so.
- 0:41The turmeric's for me knee.
- 0:44Well, for me joints in general these days.
- 0:46Jesus.
- 0:46Whatever floats your boat, champ.
- 0:48Healthy little mix, though.
- 0:49It's me being healthy.
- 0:51Yeah.
- 0:51No, it's banging, though.
- 0:52Yeah, kind of jealous.
- 0:54Don't worry, I've got me coffee here as well, though.
- 0:58She's looking after you today, isn't she?
- 1:00Because there's no way you fucking made that.
- 1:03You're joking, aren't you?
- 1:04I have to do everything myself in this house.
- 1:06Don't tell her I said that, though.
- 1:07Don't tell her I said that.
- 1:08Yeah.
- 1:08Of course, of course, of course.
- 1:12Right.
- 1:13How are we this morning?
- 1:14I was going to say, yeah, have you had a good week?
- 1:19Yeah.
- 1:20Any golf?
- 1:20It's been a decent week.
- 1:22No, no golf.
- 1:23Oh, I played paddle.
- 1:24Paddle.
- 1:26And football in the same day and pulled me on me.
- 1:29I was going to say, you didn't survive that, did you?
- 1:32Went over on my ankle and my knee can't take doing more than one exercise in a day.
- 1:36Can't even take one.
- 1:36So I'm struggling to walk at the minute.
- 1:39But yeah, it's been a really good week.
- 1:41Nice.
- 1:42Nice.
- 1:42Tony, you?
- 1:42Same, mate.
- 1:44I've got too many kids, haven't I?
- 1:46So yeah, I'm just working and cracking on, mate.
- 1:50Just, yeah, busy.
- 1:52Fair play, fair play.
- 1:53Well, let's dig into it then.
- 1:55Another win for the Toffees.
- 1:56We go into the international break in seventh place, nine points out of 15.
- 2:03Ozzy, is it a good start to the season?
- 2:06Well, at the minute, we're invincible.
- 2:09Do you know what I mean?
- 2:10We're the Invincibles.
- 2:11Arsenal have been being already the title holders.
- 2:14We've gone longer without getting beat than they have.
- 2:18We can currently call ourselves the Invincibles.
- 2:21There's a couple of teams though, isn't there still?
- 2:23Hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, less of that, less of that.
- 2:26We're the Invisibles at the minute.
- 2:28Now, do you know what?
- 2:30It's been a really good start.
- 2:31If we'd have said at the start of the season, you're going to go up to that first international break, because I think I mentioned before, you always sort of identify, you know, a run of four or five games.
- 2:40Let's perform up to that, maybe the transfer window or up to the international break up.
- 2:46When they come back, they'll probably identify the spell between when they're back and the next international breakers, see how many points we can get in there.
- 2:53So for this first one, taken on its own...
- 2:57brilliant I mean we'd have all said that we'd go in there with hardly conceded any goals we've kept a good few clean sheets we've what is it three clean sheets four clean sheets including the cups we've scored four goals your striker Tiano Barry's got a few now
- 3:18we'd be unbeaten, we'd be in the top six or seven in the league.
- 3:24I think we'd have all been made up.
- 3:27I mean, there are still things to improve on.
- 3:30There are still things that probably went our way because as much as...
- 3:34We probably could have, should have beat Tottenham, because especially when you look at the other games and you look at maybe that was, at the time I felt it was a really good point.
- 3:42Maybe you're looking back at the end, oh, considering how they're playing, it might be points dropped.
- 3:47We have to remember that we nicked late goals against Bournemouth and Man Utd, despite us deserving a point, we got those goals late.
- 3:54So I think all around it's been pretty good and I've been pleased with the character shown.
- 3:58Tony, have you enjoyed the start?
- 4:00Yeah, I think we've done well.
- 4:02I think we've done really well, to be fair.
- 4:04So happy.
- 4:05Just that the lads are playing good football.
- 4:09You know what?
- 4:10It most impressed me with creating loads of chances.
- 4:13Lads are getting on the ball and the creativity is better than it was last season.
- 4:19I think I said just by purely creating more chances and I do think eventually Tiano Barry will start slotting more and more
- 4:28I think he will get on a run at some point in the season.
- 4:30So we've just got to keep getting behind him.
- 4:33Super impressed with Keane and Juice Burel.
- 4:37And Tariq George.
- 4:38I just think really good footballers.
- 4:42Once Jimmy Garner gets up to speed,
- 4:45I think we'll be perfect.
- 4:47I think everything's spot on.
- 4:48The defence looks solid.
- 4:50Jared Brantway coming back into the team is a real...
- 4:55It's a blessing.
- 4:57You need someone like him, mate.
- 4:59You really do.
- 5:00Tarky's been his normal self.
- 5:03You can rely on him.
- 5:05He's a threat up top.
- 5:06I'm from set pieces.
- 5:08Er...
- 5:09it's come to what we've expected from James Tarkowski.
- 5:12You know, he's reliable, he's consistent, he's a steady seven every week.
- 5:17You know, and then when he pops up with a goal, he's a nine.
- 5:20So, you know, it is what it is.
- 5:22It's a...
- 5:25Niles, it has been nice to see him in the system and in the team.
- 5:32So I think it's an acquisition that was massively, massively needed.
- 5:37And I'm not going to lie, I think it was a gamble because you just don't know if he's going to fit in and go in so well.
- 5:44But it's paid off.
- 5:45I think he's been brilliant.
- 5:47Tony, is it a gamble in the Premier League now for £4 million?
- 5:50Massive.
- 5:50£4 million for a player?
- 5:52No, I don't think...
- 5:54I don't think it's a gamble.
- 5:54It's a massive gamble.
- 5:55I don't mean it's a gamble just playing him.
- 5:57It's not a gamble to take him on board because the money's so minor.
- 6:00No, it's not a gamble for the board and people like that.
- 6:03It's not a gamble, no.
- 6:05But for the manager to go, for him then you could just throw him in.
- 6:08I think it's a gamble.
- 6:09It's paid off.
- 6:10The gaffer's obviously done his research, done his due diligence on him.
- 6:15He definitely does that.
- 6:16Yeah.
- 6:17To put him in and to be trusting him and for it to pay him off, it shows you David Moyes knows what he's doing.
- 6:24because no one else was coming for him.
- 6:25And let me tell you, a lot of people were after right-backs in the Premier League.
- 6:28I don't know what it is or why it is, but a lot of different teams needed that right-back position filling.
- 6:34And we weren't the only ones.
- 6:35So I can imagine Maitland-Niles would have had options.
- 6:39He's chose Everton, and Everton chose him for a reason, and he's shown why.
- 6:43So, yeah, that's made up.
- 6:45You know what I've picked up on this week?
- 6:47I've heard loads from various other sources about these running stats.
- 6:51Yeah.
- 6:52And it is one, the goal goal and man your eyes is 20th on the running stats and stuff like that.
- 6:57But do you know who's 18th?
- 7:00Top of the league.
- 7:02City.
- 7:03So it just makes you laugh, doesn't it?
- 7:05This isn't about running stats.
- 7:07If it was about running stats, go join the areas, get in the Olympics.
- 7:12It's about playing football.
- 7:14It's about playing football.
- 7:15So, you know, I'm sick of this nonsense and everything's so statistically driven now, stat-driven.
- 7:22How much clearer can you say?
- 7:24So, you know, OK, we're in your eyes to the 20th.
- 7:26Well, who's top?
- 7:27Who's top of the league?
- 7:2818th for running stats.
- 7:30So just do one.
- 7:31Do one with your stats and your iPads and your coming out and giving us this, you know,
- 7:37tactical jargon that's just nonsense is there not something to be said though about United not running I watched the last game on the weekend City obviously don't run then as well what's the difference Lee
- 7:49They've got the Viking, haven't they?
- 7:52I agree with that every time.
- 7:54But, you know, okay, Man United aren't growing, but City aren't running, and then obviously is their 18th.
- 8:00I tell you what, first thing I've said is Tony's done his research again.
- 8:04You know, he doesn't like people who do their research, Liam.
- 8:06You know, he's got names for people who do their research.
- 8:10Come on, I'm aware of that, Tony.
- 8:12Do you want me to just be totally honest about what I know?
- 8:14I've done absolutely no research.
- 8:16I've been with the physio on the bed this morning, he's been going right through my hamstring and my calf and everything.
- 8:20And he's coming up with this, he's getting it off his chest and he's obviously not happy about all this nonsense that they come up with the iPads.
- 8:27He's one of them physios who believes a physio can do everything, knows everything.
- 8:31He knows all the scents.
- 8:33He's like that fella in The Naked Gun, you know, where he goes round and talks to the fella on the street and he knows absolutely everything about everyone.
- 8:38That's him for me.
- 8:39He knows everything about everyone.
- 8:44So yeah, he just gave me that fact this morning so I just thought I'd share it with all you.
- 8:47It's probably wrong now, my luck.
- 8:48But he told me...
- 8:50I haven't seen it yet, but it wouldn't surprise me.
- 8:53But the thing about running stats, it's relative to your style of play.
- 8:58So if you're a Man City and you're keeping the ball and you dominate possession, then generally when you've got the ball, you know, four times out of five, you don't have to run as much or at least you run when you want to.
- 9:09You keep the ball until you go and have a burst.
- 9:10Obviously, you can run with the ball to make spaces and all that, but you tend to, on average, run more without the ball.
- 9:19But...
- 9:20because of what City are because of what United are at the moment City top of the league keeping the ball everything's going great getting in good positions manipulating the ball moving the ball well they don't have to run as much Manchester United they're
- 9:34are doing really, really badly.
- 9:37They're underperforming.
- 9:38They're struggling.
- 9:40So the least that you kind of asked for, the least we would ask for if we're Everton fans and we're saying, you're not playing very well, but please tell me you're at least running around and charging around and showing how much you care, showing you're trying to fly into tackles, show that we're not getting beat because you're not working hard enough.
- 9:57That's an easy thing to fix.
- 9:59If you...
- 10:00outworking your opponent, then you're giving yourself a chance.
- 10:03Growing up, one of the things, and I'm not just talking about David Moyes' teams, I'm talking about going back to, as far as I can remember, 10, 11, 12-year-old teams back there.
- 10:13The first thing was, pretty much every team talk, in some way or another, consisted of
- 10:19if you're outworked them, if you do better than, if you win your battles and you're outworked them, then your quality will show through, then your talent will show through.
- 10:26So City's talent is so exceptional that they're able to keep the ball and make the opposition work, but Manchester United aren't doing that at the minute.
- 10:33So you'd say, go and outwork the opponents, go and win your battles and then your quality will take over.
- 10:39That's what I think Everton are doing at the minute.
- 10:41I think the majority, I think we've been up for the battle.
- 10:44I don't think we've dominated every game by any stretch of the imagination.
- 10:47Yeah.
- 10:48But I think that we, I think we're competing.
- 10:51I think we're getting close to people.
- 10:52I think we're putting tackles in.
- 10:54I think about a couple of players you just mentioned, Jared's in the England squad and rightly so.
- 10:59But I thought Tarkey was the best centre-half against Dipswich.
- 11:02I thought he was the one who stepped up.
- 11:04I think it's great about Tarki at the minute, the fact that that ball comes out the sky for the goal and everyone's thinking, go on, volley it.
- 11:12I mean, we're talking about a centre-half, 35-plus yards from goal, but he strikes them so sweetly, doesn't he, at the minute that we're all thinking, go on, volley it.
- 11:21So that was great.
- 11:22I think Keane always been giving them lessons.
- 11:24Maybe.
- 11:27Maybe they go off on their own and instead of doing defending and heading and kicking each other, maybe they're doing volleys.
- 11:32They're hard volleys.
- 11:33They're hard volleys.
- 11:35What do you make a Beto's goal of?
- 11:39I've had talks, I've had arguments about this.
- 11:42I still think he meant to.
- 11:44Or at least... Or at least in the sense of...
- 11:53I think he is trying to get out the way of it, but I do still think he's... That means he didn't mean it, though, if he's trying to get out the way of it.
- 11:59No, well, you are trying to...
- 12:00If someone's having a shot, you're trying to get out the way of it, but at the same time, you can still turn your chest, or you can still direct it towards goal, or you can still...
- 12:08Instincts...
- 12:09I'm just picturing me in that situation.
- 12:10Your instincts take over.
- 12:12You're jumped on the floor, you shitter.
- 12:14I was going to say, have they gone over you there?
- 12:16Hey, I...
- 12:17I just... You're out on their leg.
- 12:20I kick him out and he's down, Lee.
- 12:21That's it.
- 12:22Go on.
- 12:23That was harsh, that one.
- 12:24That was harsh, that one.
- 12:26I scored a couple of goals just by, you know, getting little Nicky deflections on them and allowing them to go in.
- 12:30So I'm giving them the benefit of the doubt, but I know a number of people who are adamant that he had no clue what happened there.
- 12:37You're obviously in that camp, Tone.
- 12:40I just think...
- 12:42I'm on your camp I think he tried to move out the way of it and it's as simple as that he thought I don't want to get whacked by this and then you know what I did get whacked and I've scored again but I thought the second goal I got disallowed now that's a good goal
- 12:55that's probably his best goal this season before we get on to that in a set I still think he's moved out of the way moved his chest but sort of just just chucked his belly chest arm at it all at the same time it doesn't make sense if he's moved out of the way of it that he meant for it to him you understand what moving out of the way means moving out of the way I don't want to get hit
- 13:16No, that's in boxing terms.
- 13:18But because in boxing terms, you move out the way of it because you don't even want to take a glance and hit because that'll hurt.
- 13:24In football, if the ball's coming at me, I can move out the way, but only just enough where it flicks off the side of my head or flicks off my arms.
- 13:32Because if I stand still, it's going to hit me flush in the face, maybe, or flush in the chest.
- 13:36But if I move just slightly, then it's going to hit me and, you know, take a ricochet and go in a different direction.
- 13:41I don't mind getting a glance and blow in football.
- 13:43I'm not, it's not like boxing.
- 13:46So a glance and blows are good in football.
- 13:49And I think that's...
- 13:50I'm giving him the benefit of the doubt.
- 13:51It was a good goal.
- 13:52He scored again.
- 13:53And as you said, he was absolutely robbed for his second goal, which could arguably have been his best goal of the season because it was a brilliant header.
- 14:03Great neck muscles, great direction.
- 14:05Exactly what he was doing to the far post after a great delivery in.
- 14:09And somehow...
- 14:11that goal didn't stand.
- 14:12What was your thought to her when you saw it?
- 14:15Come on, Tony, go first.
- 14:17Good goal.
- 14:18I'm having that good goal.
- 14:20The fact that the keeper can see everything and Brennan Johnson, I get where the position he's in, but I just thought, come on, mate, you're not manipulating the goalkeeper there.
- 14:30And the fact that he's moving either side, you've just been beat and VAR will do anything.
- 14:36It's evident.
- 14:36I'm surprised he didn't deduct us 10 points after the game again.
- 14:39you know what I mean nothing would surprise me with the Premier League to be honest so it just annoys the life out of me but it is what it is you know it's Everton it's what we do we've just got to keep striving keep battling keep fighting and keep the hunger levels up we're slowly but surely turning Hill Dickinson into a place that teams don't want to come
- 15:01I think the atmosphere picks up, I think we're all behind the team and that's me thought about the Hilda, we're slowly turning it round now.
- 15:09It's not one of them places where they're like, oh it's a lovely place, I can't wait to go there and play.
- 15:14It's a place that's starting to turn into, you're going to have to fight here lads, you want to get points here mate, you're going to have to fight for it.
- 15:21And that's it.
- 15:22We've shown against the back end of last season against City, what we're capable of, when the crowd's up, when they're on us.
- 15:28Everyone forgets this.
- 15:30The league was in City's hands until they turned up at the Hill Dickinson.
- 15:34It was in their hands.
- 15:35We're the ones who changed the league last season.
- 15:37We're the ones who decided the fate of the Premier League last season.
- 15:41No one else was.
- 15:42So people need to remember that and coming to the Hill Dickinson, it's not an easy feat anymore.
- 15:46The sooner teams realise that, the better, mate.
- 15:50What do you think of the goal, though, Liam?
- 15:53The offside one.
- 15:54Yeah.
- 15:56I'm still not finished raving about that one.
- 15:58Yeah, yeah.
- 15:59I'm trying to work out who's fault.
- 16:01Are we just going to go as simple as, again, the example of the Man City United one, where it's just people in the room just making the wrong decision and another mistake?
- 16:11Is it as simple as saying it's human error again?
- 16:14I mean, it shouldn't be human error.
- 16:16They should be getting these decisions right, but...
- 16:18Where do you stand on him?
- 16:19Well, officially, I mean, we all know that the incident the week before is the one that's influenced it.
- 16:26The Manchester City goal at United, which was a moment where
- 16:35Enzo Fernandes being offside influenced Martinez's ability to get the ball in and the decision he was making on even the goalkeeper as the ball was flashed across.
- 16:47So that one, yeah, quite publicly should have been ruled out.
- 16:51Howard Webb came out, didn't he, and said that it was a mistake.
- 16:55And I think that's influenced this moving forward.
- 16:57Now, officially...
- 16:58I think the refs can say that he was in an offside position and there is potential for him to have interfered with the goalkeeper.
- 17:08Now, if that had been given by the assistant straight away and they'd have given that decision offside, I don't think VAR would have got involved to overrule it because there is enough sort of evidence that he has stood right in front of the goalkeeper.
- 17:21But when we're talking about high bars and we're talking about them not getting involved, that was the frustrating thing for me.
- 17:27Nine out of ten people, nine out of ten pundits I've spoke to, I've said that there's absolutely no way that the goalkeeper could have made that save.
- 17:37Nothing else happened except the shot.
- 17:39going in the far post.
- 17:40The only person Brandon Johnson was influencing and he wasn't actually touching him at the time of contact.
- 17:45The goalkeeper was touching him but he still was in front of him in an offside position.
- 17:48But the only person he could have influenced was the goalkeeper and even if you had to give the goalkeeper a head start, a running start, told him where it was going and told him to go and take three paces before Tieno had even had the ball, he still wouldn't have saved it.
- 18:02Put two goalkeepers in there, they wouldn't have saved it.
- 18:04So in that sense, was he influencing?
- 18:07Did he interfere with play?
- 18:08No.
- 18:09In my opinion, no.
- 18:10In most people's opinions, no.
- 18:12I was surprised that one or two pundits on the Saturday night didn't give it a little bit more highlight.
- 18:22They just sort of said that this is what happened.
- 18:25I thought that they'd highlight that a bit more, that he wasn't really interfering because...
- 18:32That was a frustrating moment for us because that actually should have been a good goal from Sierra Barry, who was trying to get him more goals, trying to get him more confidence, and that would have settled the game down.
- 18:41The game would have been comfortable after that.
- 18:43It would have been an easy breezy run-in.
- 18:45Instead, we got...
- 18:47We were quite good for the next 10 or 15 minutes to have scored.
- 18:51We only had two shots on target all day, I think out of 21, which was the disappointing part of the day.
- 18:55Tony, you were right about us creating more and us being more positive and we are creating big chances like we did at Spurs last weekend.
- 19:03And here we didn't take the chances.
- 19:04And then suddenly it's a real nervous stadium.
- 19:07It's a real nervy finish up against 10 men.
- 19:09So that goal could have changed the atmosphere in the stadium and it wasn't allowed to.
- 19:17One question I want to ask Maybe slightly devil's advocate Is there an argument that we're slightly At times riding our luck In games with narrow wins And late equalisers Or are we saying that we actually are happy With the performances so far What do you think Tom?
- 19:35Yeah we are riding our luck
- 19:37Absolutely.
- 19:38And it'll bite us.
- 19:40So, gotta learn to kill games.
- 19:44I just think, yeah, that will, you win a 1-0 against an Arsenal or the City or something like that in that kind of manner.
- 19:54you're going to get punished.
- 19:56The better quality players will punish you.
- 19:59You've got to remember who we're playing against, first and foremost.
- 20:02You know, see who's brand new to the league.
- 20:06So yeah, know who you're up against, know your opponents, but I don't know, it's just...
- 20:13There's a flip side to that coin as well.
- 20:14Also, when you're on top and teams are coming in, I think Everton is such a better counter-attacking team.
- 20:21I think we struggle with, even though we're creating more chances, which I've said earlier on, I think our best style is counter-attacking.
- 20:29You know, players who find holes, find spots.
- 20:31People like Brennan Johnson.
- 20:32Do you know what?
- 20:35Brian Johnson's had a good few chances now like he said he's been in some really good positions he should be on a few more goals I don't want to sound harsh but he should be on a couple more goals now because he's a good player and like the first five minutes he come on I forget which game it was a couple of games back anyway first five minutes he comes on for TNO Barry he's a one-on-one situation
- 20:56and he doesn't hit the target.
- 20:57Two really good thingos now I've seen, when he hasn't hit the targets on either one.
- 21:01That was in the cup, that game.
- 21:02That was against Wolves.
- 21:04If you're going off that kind of thing, I've just got to be thinking purely now, and well, the next two probably go for him.
- 21:10Because on the law of averages, a player of his quality and his standard, he'll miss two, the next two's going to go.
- 21:15And that could be the case.
- 21:16And if that's the case, then so be it.
- 21:18That he's slotting 50-50 ratio.
- 21:21but I just want to see that bit more killer instinct from the players.
- 21:25I think at the back we're brilliant.
- 21:27No, I think you're right.
- 21:28And Brennan Johnson had a huge chance.
- 21:30He should have scored a couple of goals.
- 21:31He had a huge chance at the start of the Ipswich game, which was really good play from us, moving the ball quickly, good passage, good fired ball into him, and he did the hard part and controlled it on the move, coming across and dragging it back.
- 21:45That was the difficult part of what he had to do.
- 21:48and then he had a free shot at the goalkeeper from inside the penalty area, which I was convinced the goalkeeper had saved to start with from my angle because I thought there's no way he can miss the target from there.
- 21:58The keeper must have saved it.
- 22:00But that was a bad miss.
- 22:01But he also missed that chance against Spurs.
- 22:04He had the best chance in the game against Spurs.
- 22:07And if we score that, we win that game.
- 22:09So rounding you back to the question you asked Tony, Liam, are we riding our luck a little bit?
- 22:17I don't know.
- 22:17Maybe.
- 22:19Maybe because, you know, last minute goals against Man United and Brentford, sorry, Bournemouth, maybe make you think that we're riding our luck a little bit.
- 22:30Rolled out the last 10 minutes of the Ipswich game, although...
- 22:34we should have been a better position uh but we've had chances we could have won against spares we were we were unlucky in that game we should have scored more against tips which we should have so i'm not fully convinced that we're riding our luck but even if we are i would say why not enjoy it because let me tell you over the course of the season there'll be moments when we're not riding our luck when things are going against us and we're coming away going bloody hell typical ever we were
- 22:59robbed there or we were unlucky there or things didn't go well for us there and even that goal Ciano Barry's goal getting disallowed we just spoke about that's gone against us so
- 23:09Look, roller coasters, people say you're in your own luck.
- 23:11Yeah, you probably do, but things will go for you and against you over the season.
- 23:16Never look for the negatives.
- 23:18You should never look for the negatives when you are getting a little bit of luck or when the rub of the greens go in your way.
- 23:23Don't look for the negatives.
- 23:24Actually, embrace it, be positive.
- 23:26What's all this modern generation thing?
- 23:27Manifest.
- 23:28Manifest more luck.
- 23:30Let's try and think about more rather than do what we do as Evertonians.
- 23:35And I am a culprit as much as anyone else where we think, oh, negative's coming.
- 23:41Oh, Ipswich are going to equalize zero.
- 23:43And we start to imagine that the worst is going to happen.
- 23:47So let's enjoy the luck when it's here.
- 23:49Oz, do you know when it comes to Brennan Johnson?
- 23:51Is a part of that as a player that he hasn't been playing much football the last season or so and it'll come the more he's playing?
- 23:59Does that play a factor?
- 24:01Yeah, at times.
- 24:03I think you only have to look at Jimmy Garner for that at the minute who I'm pleased he's been called up to the England squad and that'll help him
- 24:10with his sharpness for us, because he's going to go into some intense training over the next three weeks.
- 24:14I was going to ask you on that, just before you carry on with Brennan Johnson, do you think that's a positive that Jimmy Garner's in the England squad?
- 24:20Did he need more rest, or do you think it's sharpness?
- 24:24No, for Garner, because he... For Jarrod Brantwaite, I want to wrap him in cotton wool.
- 24:28But he's probably going to go there and play and be involved.
- 24:32For Jimmy Garner, it's the opposite.
- 24:34You need him to go and play, be involved in everything sharp, be involved in sharp training, be involved in games, be involved in everything.
- 24:40Because he is still lacking a yard.
- 24:42I've never seen him give the ball away as much as he did in the first 45 minutes of that game against Dipswich the other day.
- 24:48So...
- 24:50we need him to get, we need him to get back to his best.
- 24:52So it's a good thing that he's going to go and play.
- 24:54And you can tell the levels when people aren't doing things automatically without thinking because they trust their body, they trust their technique, they know things are going well, confidence levels are through the roof.
- 25:04You've seen the type of players that people can get and you've seen the difference it can make when you're not full of confidence.
- 25:09And Brennan Johnson, he did play quite a bit last year.
- 25:12Yes, he was in and out for Crystal Palace once he went there.
- 25:16But,
- 25:18He's obviously lacking in confidence.
- 25:20Those things that have come natural to him, those moments where you just turn and hit it and you can probably do it with your eyes closed because you know where the goal is because everything's going sweet.
- 25:28It's like Erling Haaland's playing at the minute.
- 25:30Wow.
- 25:31You know, with knowing where the goal is.
- 25:33Um,
- 25:34So I do think he probably needs something.
- 25:36I think he needs something to fall his way more than Tieno Barry does at the minute.
- 25:41I think Brennan Johnson needs a tap-in at the far post or one of those shots to go in, run away, celebrate into the crowd.
- 25:49Let him realise that it's a great place to be a player at.
- 25:54more than Tierno Barry does, because I think Tierno's going to play.
- 25:57And I think Tierno is getting goals here or there, and we know who he is and his technique's going to get better.
- 26:02I think as we go along, maybe there's a limit on that, I don't know.
- 26:05But Brenna Johnson needs a big boost at the minute because he won't stay in the team as long as he probably wants to when he comes, or we thought he would when he comes, because he's got a couple of young players nipping at his heels at the minute who actually...
- 26:19are probably deserving of more game time in Tyler Diblin and Tariq George.
- 26:26Maybe even Alcaraz, who's done okay when he's come in.
- 26:28Did you enjoy Diblin's performance when he came on against Ipswich?
- 26:32Yeah, loved it.
- 26:34I thought he went without the ball for about 10 minutes and I was thinking, come on, Tyler, demand it.
- 26:39Just scream, put your hands in the air, get the ball.
- 26:40Yeah.
- 26:41But I think he received the ball five or six times in the next 10 minutes or so.
- 26:48And on five of them, he actually went, right, I'm going to go do something.
- 26:51And he put a brilliant ball into Tadjews Briole, who I think was probably done by the spin at the back post.
- 26:57I think he didn't account for the spin when he tried to head it back goalwards.
- 27:01He just...
- 27:02Because when the spin is coming like that, sometimes you have to head it wide of the far post because the spin will bring it back.
- 27:08And I think he just aimed for the goal and the spin took it off the side of his head.
- 27:13And the moment Diblin probably, I'm not going to say needs to sharpen up on because it was an incredible bit of play.
- 27:21but needs to figure out a way to get a shot, was when he chopped all three players at once.
- 27:25He went onto his left foot, did this, looked like he was going to hit it, chopped through all three of them, went for the dummy.
- 27:31And he just needed an extra touch that he didn't get out of his feet well enough to hit it with his right foot, because the space was there.
- 27:37By the time he sorted himself out, the chance had gone.
- 27:40And maybe that's...
- 27:42the difference in time and between the championship and under-21s, a reserve football where he can chop and he can still take an extra touch before he gets that shot away.
- 27:52We're at this level.
- 27:54Once you're chopped, you need to get shot away or you touch to get that shot away.
- 27:57It has to be quick.
- 27:58But you're seeing, I'm seeing a lot more from him in,
- 28:02A game and a half, probably not a game and a half, he came on after, what, an hour?
- 28:07So a game and a half.
- 28:08From what I've seen him in the last two games, I've seen more than I saw in the whole of last season.
- 28:12So I'm excited for him.
- 28:13Do you know what?
- 28:14I think it's... No one really brings this point to it no more because everybody's just doing the same thing, sticking a left footer on the right side and a right footer on the left side.
- 28:25If he's on the left side there and he chops him and does him, it's a shot on a stronger foot at goal.
- 28:32and he keeps asking to cut back the other way, and he's on his weak foot, his right foot, and it's quite clearly, and obviously, not as strong as his left side.
- 28:40If he's on the other side of the pitch, he gets a nice, clean shot at goal, and it probably goes in, because he's got a really good left peg.
- 28:48Yeah, I get what you're saying.
- 28:51But you can only... Illumina and I could do that because Illumina and I was a two-footed dribbler.
- 28:56Illumina could dribble with his left foot as much as his right.
- 28:58And I believed when Illumina and I cut in on his left foot.
- 29:01I really believed he was going to try and hit it with his left foot in the far corner.
- 29:05If you put Tyler Diblin on the right, first of all, all of his skill is still with his left foot.
- 29:10So when he cuts in onto his right, he's not doing any of that skill with his right foot.
- 29:15He's also not...
- 29:17I'm not believing he's going to try and bend one in the far corner with his right foot from there because you're talking about his technique.
- 29:22So if he did do that and did a certain amount of chop, he wouldn't create the space.
- 29:26The space is there because he's on that side and he's used his left foot and he could come inside and be dangerous with that left foot whip.
- 29:33All he needs to learn is, I mean, I'd be trying to, not teach him, but I'd be going over that with him again and again and again in training.
- 29:40Look, if you come in on your left...
- 29:43And there's a chance there to hit it, hit it.
- 29:44If not, you're chopping your back onto your right and hit it quick.
- 29:47He showed me all in that little movement, how he can get goals and how we can get goals out of him.
- 29:51He just needs to sharpen up that last little bit to get his shot away quicker.
- 29:55But yeah, his skill level is very good.
- 29:59How he manipulates the ball, the closeness he has to his feet when he's moving are all things we knew about.
- 30:06but I'm liking to see the confidence levels he's showing now.
- 30:09But he's in the team because he's shown he can defend and work hard as well.
- 30:13Do you think he deserves a start in the next game in the Premier League?
- 30:18Yeah, probably.
- 30:20The only thing about that is, you know, when you're trying to find places for him to play, he's got to the point where he's pretty much earning a,
- 30:31the conversation about starting now.
- 30:32I know a lot of people that would start him, a lot of people that wouldn't.
- 30:35The good thing next time is he's up against Hull.
- 30:38That's our next game, which is a game you'd think, oh, that's an opportunity to bring him in.
- 30:43Because after that, we've got Chelsea and then Arsenal.
- 30:46So you're actually probably thinking Hull might be a good one.
- 30:48But I'm also now thinking as a manager, away from home against a team like Hull who have worked really hard and they've got well more points than normal.
- 30:58Um,
- 30:59Am I starting him away from home in that one?
- 31:01If that was Hull at home in the next game, no brainer, I'm starting him.
- 31:04All the way, I'm thinking.
- 31:06I don't know.
- 31:08It's a good talk.
- 31:09It's a good decision.
- 31:11I think, I don't know if you can start Diblin and Grealish at the same time either.
- 31:15By the way, I'm not saying they can't play at the same time, but they're both very similar.
- 31:19They're similar, yeah.
- 31:20So if you start Grealish on one side and Johnson on the other, you've got one who comes in and one runs long, whereas maybe it's Diblin on one side and George on the other.
- 31:29Maybe you start both of them and that gives you...
- 31:32the same balance but the opposite way around so yeah big decision but he's definitely got to the point where it's a serious conversation about it we need holders to behave themselves that's all we need we need holders to behave themselves and know the place
- 31:47We don't want to be getting mauled by the Tigers, do we, Tony?
- 31:49We don't want any of them celebrations.
- 31:51Oh, mate, I just don't need it.
- 31:52I just need to grow up and behave.
- 31:54Know your place.
- 31:55You don't belong here.
- 31:56To be fair, did you see the clip of the Everton fans saying the tube by the Toffees?
- 32:01I'm not sure if you saw it.
- 32:02I'm pretty sure Ozzy must have that song copyrighted.
- 32:04He said it first.
- 32:05He was one doing the Razz history.
- 32:07Oh, Tued.
- 32:07I thought he said Tued.
- 32:08Tued by the Toffees.
- 32:09I thought he said Tued.
- 32:10I was thinking Tued by the Toffees.
- 32:12What's that?
- 32:13Nah, that's the wrong voice.
- 32:14That's a totally different kind of party.
- 32:15Was it me who said that?
- 32:17Did I copyright that?
- 32:19It does sound a bit risky actually when you put it like that.
- 32:21Oh Tony, that's you again now.
- 32:25That's usually an Aussie joke.
- 32:27Can we talk about Chelsea getting pumped and Cundey talking nonsense?
- 32:33Because he knows me, that little weasel.
- 32:35He's got a hairline like a dandelion and he just annoys me.
- 32:37He's going, can Everton come back?
- 32:39Well if your hairline came back after you visit and take me, then Everton can come back.
- 32:46I've had enough of him.
- 32:47Him and his nonsense.
- 32:48And the little chunk as well.
- 32:49Oh, the two of them just leveled Everton and just gave it to us.
- 32:53When the two of them are support, absolutely.
- 32:56I have a great weekend.
- 32:57That's a pair of them.
- 32:58The two of them are laughing stock.
- 33:00Brentford went to, you know, Brentford just went right through Chelsea like a hot knife through butter.
- 33:06Absolute gold.
- 33:08I don't really have anything bad to say about Chelsea.
- 33:12I don't really dislike them in any way.
- 33:13I think they're actually a decent club.
- 33:15And Darren Barkley may support them.
- 33:17But the fact of that Cundey's wound me right up.
- 33:20And I'm sure the little dweeb used to play for Tottenham as well.
- 33:24Like the ones that played for Tottenham and Chelsea at hand.
- 33:26Yeah, I think he did, yeah.
- 33:27Yeah, he's just an annoying little man.
- 33:30Annoying pair of them.
- 33:32That'd get into your skin, did it?
- 33:34Wild me up, yeah.
- 33:35Just Everton are relevant, he said.
- 33:37That's funny enough, we've got more league titles than the pair of you are relevant, Muppets put together.
- 33:44It's a strange time of the season to say.
- 33:46Yeah, just call in, Tony.
- 33:48Yeah, just call in to the TalkSport studios.
- 33:50Yeah, about half nine on Friday night.
- 33:52Just turn off.
- 33:54choked a pair of them in that studio but yeah that would have been the time as you said Chelsea got battered I know battered I say battered they got yeah I thought it was a physical mismatch and did you hear what he said it was never a 3-0 game
- 34:11we've said that a few times I've been called out for it Tottenham getting pumped by Villarreal Chelsea can't defend yeah Tottenham getting pumped by Villarreal I don't do you want to do another funny stuff boys Unai Emery has won more
- 34:28league games at Tottenham's new ground and the last three managers put together.
- 34:35No way.
- 34:36Is that true, is it?
- 34:38Did the physio tell you that?
- 34:41No he didn't I just read it somewhere But yeah Unai Emery has won more Research again Has won more games at Tottenham Hotspur's new stadium the last three managers put together So I don't know how many times he's won there I don't know what he's done there but he's won every time he's been What a guy That is so bad Villa needed the win as well to be fair He's a brilliant manager De Zerbi's only won one and that was against us Who was before De Zerbi?
- 35:12They must have only won one game.
- 35:14Yeah, we're talking.
- 35:16The fellow Nuno?
- 35:17Was Nuno there?
- 35:18Nuno and Thomas Frank before, though.
- 35:20Thomas Frank, yeah.
- 35:21There you go.
- 35:22Oh, yeah.
- 35:23Thomas Frank and Nuno.
- 35:24It all makes sense.
- 35:25That's a great record.
- 35:27Oh, neat.
- 35:28They scored their first goals, though, to Spurs.
- 35:30But, yeah.
- 35:32Are they panicking just yet?
- 35:34I was going to say, how much more time has Dezevi got to turn that round until they have to make a decision?
- 35:39Yeah.
- 35:42I don't even think he sees Christmas.
- 35:43If Defer continues, he doesn't see Christmas.
- 35:45Yeah, end of October, I'd say, if it stays like this.
- 35:49If they show a bit of improvement, longer, but if it stays like this, if they've not won by October, then, yeah, probably that.
- 35:57What happened with Arsenal?
- 35:57Probably that.
- 35:59What happened?
- 36:00How weird did that come from?
- 36:01Now, Arsenal did get done by Brighton.
- 36:03Brighton, a great team at the minute, you know.
- 36:06Yeah.
- 36:07Some of their play and their rotations and their movements.
- 36:10And they were even, I mean, they scored goals from corners.
- 36:13They basically went up to Arsenal and said, what are you best at?
- 36:16Set pieces.
- 36:17Right.
- 36:17We're going to beat you at that as well.
- 36:19That was the bad thing about Brighton.
- 36:20You're not associated Brighton with set pieces, but bang, we'll outplay you.
- 36:23We'll outscore you.
- 36:25And we'll score.
- 36:26No corners.
- 36:26It's an older place.
- 36:27They annoy me as well.
- 36:29Shouldn't be doing that to team share.
- 36:31They're Brighton, you know what I mean?
- 36:33Shouldn't be doing that to big clubs.
- 36:35It's not on.
- 36:36It's just not on.
- 36:37That's not how football works, Tony.
- 36:38You've got to let the little guys have a chance.
- 36:40I know, but I don't like it.
- 36:41It makes me feel uncomfortable.
- 36:42It makes me feel uncomfortable.
- 36:44Because it makes me worry if they...
- 36:46It makes me worry because if they're stealing points, then we should be stealing points at places like that.
- 36:51I was going to say, does that not go the other way round for you?
- 36:54And you say, well, first of all, it shows that the Premier League is...
- 36:59basically the commodity that it is and the fact that it's dead competitive top to bottom everyone could beat everyone but then does it not make you think that if they can compete up there and Aston Villa got in the Champions League and the progression that despite us being languishing I'll say as we have done the last few years that once we start getting it right if we start getting it right
- 37:20then it's not a closed shop at the top and that we've missed out on because we've been not up there for the last so many years.
- 37:29It's not a closed shop.
- 37:30We can get back.
- 37:31We can do it right.
- 37:32You can get a manager or the manager can get you back to where you need to be.
- 37:38The investment's coming in.
- 37:41Do you not think of it like that?
- 37:42If Brighton could do it, look, we could do that too.
- 37:45No, I just think they don't belong there.
- 37:48I just think it's wrong.
- 37:49Sorry, I mean, that's just me tying it up to the pain.
- 37:52So what you're saying is every club that's in the Premier League already, I think there's six or seven clubs that haven't ever been out of the Premier League, in terms of right from the very start, not the clubs like Brentford who have not been relegated, who have all been in the Premier League.
- 38:09That's a good quiz question, that one, which I'll just give the answer away.
- 38:12Say that again, what's the stat on Brentford there?
- 38:15No, I was talking about the teams that have never been relegated from the Premier League.
- 38:19Yeah.
- 38:20And we always think of Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool, Man United, us, Spurs, Brentford.
- 38:31Because we've been there from the start, and I'm sure there's like Brentford and maybe even Brighton have actually never been relegated from the Premier League.
- 38:38They've not been in there from the start.
- 38:40They've never been relegated.
- 38:42Do you know what Brentford...
- 38:43It's like a quiz question that would throw a lot of people.
- 38:46Brentford is an extractive opposition for managers and players because it's just the location.
- 38:52Top and bottom of it.
- 38:54It's also very well run in terms of...
- 38:56They're not a big club by any stretch of the imagination.
- 38:59The stadium isn't great and they've got virtually no trophies to the name.
- 39:02The stadium's all right, actually.
- 39:04But are you not...
- 39:05Sorry, go back to the thing.
- 39:07Are you telling me that these...
- 39:08clubs that are traditional that you think should be up there because you're thinking other teams should know their place.
- 39:14Are you trying to say that we should all be given like a 20 points head start at the start of the season because then everyone else will know their place?
- 39:20That sounds nice.
- 39:21That sounds absolutely fantastic.
- 39:23Give us all a better chance.
- 39:25And the others should all know their place.
- 39:26If Everton was given 20 points at the start, my optimism levels would be at peak level.
- 39:33I mean, I would be turning up to the studio and be like, wow.
- 39:35You think we'd stay up then?
- 39:37I think we've got a chance.
- 39:38We've really got a chance.
- 39:43I don't mean, I don't want to sound bad in the club, but you know what I mean?
- 39:47I just want us to do more.
- 39:48And that's all.
- 39:49I mean, that's the deep rooted issue.
- 39:51It is.
- 39:52It's what Everton have done to me, Lee.
- 39:54It's what Everton have done to me.
- 39:56It's not the other clubs, and I'm sorry to all you fans who are listening out there, but it's what Everton have done to me.
- 40:01You know what I mean?
- 40:03I just believe Everton deserves so much better.
- 40:06And so much more.
- 40:08And that's where this life's got me to, supporting Everton all these years.
- 40:13I believe Everton should want more.
- 40:14Do you believe right now that we're moving in the right direction, though?
- 40:17Yes.
- 40:18Absolutely.
- 40:21Do you believe that this success that we all want back is achievable this season?
- 40:28Or do you think it's a process?
- 40:30I think it's a process, but I believe the owners have got the right man in charge.
- 40:35And let's be brutally honest with you, the owners picked this man, the owners picked David Moyes to come back.
- 40:40And he made a brilliant decision by doing that.
- 40:43Because the people who were in charge previously didn't go to David Moyes or didn't look to make that decision at the correct time.
- 40:51They left them on the side for unbeknown reasons to us, but they all know themselves.
- 40:56This...
- 40:57The Freakton group have gone out there and got David Moyes.
- 41:00And now all we need for them to do is back him.
- 41:04And back him and that's it.
- 41:05And then you can't really ask any more from your ownership and you can't ask any more from your management.
- 41:10If it fails, it fails.
- 41:12I get it.
- 41:12But we can't ask any more if I decide as long as they back him and as long as he's allowed to make the decisions he wants to make.
- 41:24How many points do you think we need for the European slot?
- 41:27Have you got nine already?
- 41:29What would usually get us in?
- 41:31Have a look at the table last year.
- 41:3260... Do you know what?
- 41:35It obviously depends because obviously a few years back... Last year, six.
- 41:38Bournemouth, 57 points.
- 41:40Sunderland, 54 points.
- 41:41Brighton, 53 points.
- 41:43Got nine on the board in five games.
- 41:46I was going to say late 50s, to be honest.
- 41:48I think that's what we're capable of.
- 41:49If that gets us there, I'm not sure though.
- 41:52See, just thinking there off the top of my head, I was thinking when we was doing it, you were kind of having to get to the 60s, but there's nine teams got in Europe last season.
- 42:02I was thinking when six teams were getting Europe, five, six, you know, that kind of thing.
- 42:05So if it is the same again this year, if the European qualification spaces are stretched in the way that they are league-wise, then yeah, we are very capable of getting, I think we'd be disappointed if we didn't get mid-50s points-wise.
- 42:20We were in a struggle getting 60s.
- 42:22But you have to aim for it.
- 42:24But again, it's all relative to the whole league.
- 42:26So, for instance, last few seasons, the league has been getting one with 80 points.
- 42:33Three or four seasons before that, it was getting one with 99 and 100.
- 42:36And, you know, the teams at the top were taking all the points.
- 42:42So it was less filtered up.
- 42:44Yeah, so it's all relative to how the league pans out this year.
- 42:50So already the teams that have come up are winning games, winning more games than they did not last season because last season was a good year for the newly promoted teams.
- 43:01But go back two or three years, there was a spell of three seasons where the newly promoted teams hardly won a game.
- 43:06They hardly took any of the points here.
- 43:08So that meant that European qualification and seventh, sixth and fifth was probably more points than higher.
- 43:15Whereas now, with it getting spread out a bit more, it may be a bit lower.
- 43:18So we just need to look after ourselves, be competitive.
- 43:21I'd be happy if we keep this defensive record.
- 43:23I know it's hard,
- 43:25I don't know where we all want to see attacking football.
- 43:28And Tony, you're right, we are actually creating a lot of chances that we could finish them.
- 43:32But I would love to go through this next spell with another three clean sheets out of five games.
- 43:36Oh, brilliant.
- 43:37Do you know what I mean?
- 43:37I'd bite your hand off for that.
- 43:39Who are we looking at?
- 43:41Who are we looking at now, right?
- 43:43Who's going down?
- 43:44I know there's only five games in, but these people are picking up points and they're making me anxious.
- 43:49I'm not going to lie.
- 43:51So my opinion on who's going down has changed.
- 43:54There ain't three that come up.
- 43:56Well, I'll tell you what, I was going to ask some quickfire questions as we go into the international break, a nice way to sort of recap the start of the season.
- 44:03So let's start with that.
- 44:04Who is in trouble to go down?
- 44:06Is there any changes there from what you guys initially picked?
- 44:09Spurs are in trouble.
- 44:12They've been too spursy.
- 44:14Spares are spares, mate, spares are interesting.
- 44:17I thought that this year was going to sort out.
- 44:18He spent a fortune, boys.
- 44:20He spent an arm and a leg.
- 44:23He's not messing up, but Tonali for about 500 million.
- 44:26It's just...
- 44:28He spent a fortune.
- 44:30They spent 330 million, I think it was.
- 44:33Oh, my Lord.
- 44:33They're about... And you've got waste.
- 44:37I thought only Everton could do that.
- 44:39I mean, we spent half a billion and got waste.
- 44:41Yes.
- 44:44Yeah.
- 44:45Do you think they're going down us?
- 44:47No.
- 44:48I think they'll find a way.
- 44:52In the same way when we were going through this spell and we were struggling, we were all panicking.
- 44:58But, and Spurs have actually got more sort of... Has it never looked this bad?
- 45:03Not for us, us.
- 45:04We weren't getting beat like they're getting beat, us.
- 45:06Not this bad.
- 45:06Yeah, yeah.
- 45:09We were having bad runs.
- 45:11We were more competitive with them, but they have got a stronger squad than we ever had, I think.
- 45:15Yeah, they do, but they're not fighting them much.
- 45:17Across the board when you look at their players.
- 45:18So I look and think they'll find a way of getting out.
- 45:22They need to give Richarlison a game who's been pinned, don't they?
- 45:25I'll tell all what's been done to Rich, he laughed.
- 45:27Do you know about...
- 45:29That's for the manager to decide.
- 45:31I didn't imagine he'll get on.
- 45:31But I was reading, we were doing the show I was doing last week and goals within Spurs team over the last year and a bit.
- 45:41Richarlison's got 11 Premier League goals over the last year and a half, I think it was.
- 45:46The next Spurs player was on four.
- 45:49I think Tell had four and someone else had four.
- 45:52And you're looking at, Solanke had had a bit of a spell injured, but you're looking around and thinking, that's one of the reasons they're struggling.
- 45:59They can't seem to score goals.
- 46:01Kudus has been injured.
- 46:02Kulusevsky was injured.
- 46:03Madison was injured.
- 46:04They're real creative people.
- 46:06But they've still got enough talent.
- 46:07They had Savvy Simmons.
- 46:09They've got Tell.
- 46:09They've got other players in those positions.
- 46:12That's where they're struggling.
- 46:13But I do think they'll stay up.
- 46:14I do think when they come back, they'll be back.
- 46:17Did you see Richie's Instagram story?
- 46:19Yeah, it was like Zerby saying he won't be playing anymore and Richie just put like why with a crying face on his Instagram story.
- 46:28Didn't he really?
- 46:29Yeah.
- 46:30Ah, Richie's brilliant.
- 46:31Bless him.
- 46:32I think they're in real danger.
- 46:34Not real danger.
- 46:40Because they're a club that, mate, if they're still in that position come Christmas, I'm sorry, there's no way out.
- 46:48Like, you're just not doing it because it's so hard to turn around the trajectory of things and the way you're going and the way you're playing.
- 46:54Like, winning breeds winning.
- 46:56And if you just keep losing, losing, I'm sorry, just sticks to you, mate.
- 47:00You just keep losing.
- 47:00Do you think there's a point where they give Daishi a call?
- 47:03Oh, wow.
- 47:04That kind of thing.
- 47:05Oh, wow.
- 47:06But I'm saying, they are all about football and this, so let's find the most brilliant, up-and-coming, young foreign manager that's got a great name that we all love.
- 47:15Or do you think they turn around and go, right, who's about that just wins football matches?
- 47:20Say what you want about him, mate.
- 47:23Say what you want about him, he knows football.
- 47:26I don't care what they say, mate, he knows how to grind out his own.
- 47:28Are they bringing Sam Allardyce back?
- 47:30Are they bringing Sam?
- 47:31No, we'll go to Big Sam.
- 47:32Are they going that way?
- 47:32No.
- 47:34Daesh is a good shout but I think they'll have to but they'll have to wait till Christmas I mean do you know what the biggest thing is well Tottenham the mistake they could have made given the Zerby so long because you can't sack him it's so expensive to sack him didn't they give him a five year deal was it five years yeah I'm sure it was a two out five year deal
- 47:57I'm not sure the details on those these days and the compensation and the pay.
- 48:01I'm never sure about them.
- 48:03No, I know that, but you really backed him and you went all in on him, so I'm just thinking.
- 48:07And I wouldn't mind, even when he got control last season, I didn't really see much when he got older.
- 48:14It went down to... Did they go down to the last game with them?
- 48:18Or was it the game before they were safe?
- 48:20No, they had to not get beat by us, didn't they?
- 48:23Yeah, it was us, yeah.
- 48:24So, you know, it's not like he went in... We could have sent them down on that day.
- 48:28It's not like he went in and completely turned them around, is he?
- 48:31Like, he was still struggling with them last season, and for them to just go, right, you're the man, and just say, ooh, okay.
- 48:38He seems to have a very combative...
- 48:40sort of personality, doesn't he?
- 48:41It's not like when it goes in and makes everyone happy and gets around everyone and says, come on, we're all in this together.
- 48:47You know, you're Harry Redknapp types.
- 48:50He is literally going and it's my way or the highway.
- 48:54Harry's...
- 48:56Harry's probably busy in the jungle or something, and he's probably... For the eighth time.
- 49:00Whatever he's doing now.
- 49:01I think Mike Struggle, or is struggling at the minute, Fulham.
- 49:05Fulham have had a slow start to the season.
- 49:09Left big boots to Phil Silver.
- 49:12Yeah, they've got a few... You know, Arbelow is not...
- 49:15Yes, they did okay getting a draw against Liverpool, and obviously a draw against Man United, which would be positive results for them.
- 49:22They'll take the points and move on, but...
- 49:26Yeah, there's just something about the three defeats at the start of the season that they were a bit of a pushover.
- 49:33So I'd be concerned for them, but I do still think Coventry are going to go down.
- 49:39They've got to win.
- 49:39They've got their first win.
- 49:42Lampard's got their points on the board.
- 49:44Yeah, it was Nottingham away as well, yeah.
- 49:46Forest away, yeah.
- 49:47But I do think they're up against it.
- 49:50Would they class that as a Midlands kind of derby?
- 49:53Coventry where Coventry's more Midlands and it's East I mean the East Midlands is more Forest Leicester Derby okay that's their kind of derby but it is overall Midlands good clubs big clubs
- 50:14Covency always stick with me.
- 50:16They've been missing for so long, haven't they?
- 50:18They've been out the Premier League for so long.
- 50:2125 years, I think, or 26, 25, 26 years.
- 50:24I feel old now.
- 50:25I feel so old.
- 50:27You should.
- 50:28I know, but I remember Dion Dublin.
- 50:32I remember Gareth Farrelly's strike.
- 50:34Do you know what I heard today?
- 50:36Go on.
- 50:37I was like looking at my phone.
- 50:38What was it?
- 50:39Let me see if I can get it right.
- 50:40So I was born in 1981.
- 50:411981 to 2026.
- 50:45is the same difference as 1981 to 1936.
- 50:52So people who were my age when I was born had been born in 1936.
- 50:56That makes you feel old.
- 51:00What do you sound like that for?
- 51:01Oh, yeah.
- 51:01What's the point in that?
- 51:03Because I don't know before the 70s or 60s maybe, everyone was old, weren't they?
- 51:08I'm just making you realise how old we are now.
- 51:11Didn't need to do that.
- 51:11I felt bad enough as it was.
- 51:13Sorry to anyone out there.
- 51:14That just made me feel even older.
- 51:16Yeah, sorry to anyone out there.
- 51:17It's roughly my age who's just realised those kind of numbers.
- 51:22Well, let's change the tune and make it a bit happier.
- 51:26We spoke about disappointing teams, so we're saying like Spurs, Fulham, probably throw United in the mix as well.
- 51:31Who has been the teams that have impressed you most?
- 51:34Who's been the biggest surprises to you this season so far?
- 51:36Bramford.
- 51:39Hull, surprising-wise.
- 51:42Although, Ipswich have done okay and they performed well against us.
- 51:47I didn't think they'd have as many points as they got.
- 51:49Hull didn't think they'd have as many points as they got.
- 51:51Was it eight points?
- 51:54Leeds?
- 51:55Leeds have surprised me a little bit.
- 51:56Leeds have started brilliantly.
- 51:58Very competitive.
- 51:59Scoring goals, winning matches.
- 52:02So, yeah, I think those are the teams that have surprised.
- 52:03Arsenal...
- 52:05And City, everyone expected to be at the top.
- 52:08Brighton are a steady team.
- 52:09They can have runs and they are near the top doing great at the moment.
- 52:13But yeah, I'd say Leeds, Hull.
- 52:16I can't take their manager seriously when he talks.
- 52:19Who?
- 52:20Which one?
- 52:20Leeds.
- 52:20Daniel Farker.
- 52:22Daniel Farker.
- 52:25Big summer blowout.
- 52:30I can't take him seriously.
- 52:31I'm sorry.
- 52:33I do respect you mate, but I can't take him seriously.
- 52:35He starts talking and I just start laughing.
- 52:38He's winning games though.
- 52:39I'm laughing and he's talking and I can't, I've never heard of it.
- 52:43He starts talking and I can't stop laughing.
- 52:47Imagine him shouting at you in the dressing room.
- 52:50Don't I?
- 52:53Yeah, it'd take a while before you could see through the laugh, wouldn't it?
- 52:58See them shouting at you in the dressing room, though.
- 53:01You'd be like, come on, mate, behave yourself.
- 53:03Get a grip of yourself.
- 53:05Who are you shouting at?
- 53:06Is that a shout or are you singing at me?
- 53:09He has done well, you know.
- 53:11He has done well, though.
- 53:15He's doing great.
- 53:16He must be singing in the dressing room.
- 53:18And they think he's talking, but he's singing.
- 53:20He's knocking a tune out at half time.
- 53:23Go down a karaoke night.
- 53:26Imagine him.
- 53:28Oh, my God.
- 53:29I just can't.
- 53:31Where's that voice come from?
- 53:34He's brilliant.
- 53:35But I just, I'm trying to replicate it and I can't even get it out because I'm thinking about it.
- 53:39He's German, isn't he?
- 53:41Yeah, he's German.
- 53:42Yeah, well, Leiden Klopp didn't talk like that, I'll tell you that for something.
- 53:47You would have liked it if he did that, wouldn't you?
- 53:49I would have been absolutely over the moon if Jürgen Klopp spoke like that.
- 53:52But he just sounded like an angry German who just got the best out of everyone around him.
- 53:57I mean, he even got the best out of me because I wanted to kill him that much.
- 54:01He got my anger levels to the highest I've ever been, that man.
- 54:05But yeah, this far, I just can't take him seriously.
- 54:10Fair, fair.
- 54:11Best performing player so far.
- 54:20I think Pascal Gross has got to be up there Yeah He's been Three goals, three assists He's big quality for Brighton And a good performance, good team Even in the Cup game when they went away He played well against United when they won Come back I'm sure he played in that game Yeah, he's been heavily involved In a player that
- 54:44left, came back, you feel, is a bit aging.
- 54:46He's come back and actually taking control of that team and he's done really well.
- 54:51The other one I'd say,
- 54:53who's not surprised me as such, but has played very, very well.
- 54:58It's Kevin Sharder for Brentford.
- 55:01The big fella up front, Thiago, probably hasn't scored the goals at the rate he was doing last season.
- 55:08Brentford have still been scoring and it's mostly down to Sharder.
- 55:11And his goal against Leeds was brilliant.
- 55:12That little flick over into the far corner.
- 55:15But if he's not scoring goals, he's involved in everything at the minute, Sharder.
- 55:18So I'd say those two...
- 55:21have been brilliant unexpectedly Cherky's been great to watch for City Vardial yeah Vardial's been the one he's been very good he's been absolutely you're all about big defenders and you know people get kicked and all that Vardial and Jordan Pickford yeah Pickford does go under the radar Jordan Pickford's been immense Jordan Pickford's been brilliant I've seen so far any clean sheets in the Prem and then five and seven games
- 55:49Bard the Olympic for the final And making saves Making some big saves Big saves Big saves One goal of the month First week Sorry Save of the month First weekend as well Made a big save Against Wolves In the cup That actually helped us Win the game So yeah Can't argue with that Can't argue with that Fair Is your title Winner changed From Arsenal Yeah City I'm going for I'm going for City
- 56:20Next week he'll be saying Brighton though.
- 56:22He jumps all over the place, doesn't he?
- 56:24I told you before, they need to grow up.
- 56:26They need to be able to tell us to know the place.
- 56:29I'm not going to...
- 56:29I was watching Gaelinic's pod, the rest of the day.
- 56:34Gaelinic did say a line like, could they do a Leicester?
- 56:36And I was like, oof.
- 56:37Be yourself.
- 56:38Be yourself.
- 56:39Stop it.
- 56:39Stop it now.
- 56:40Don't annoy me.
- 56:42Yeah, I don't think they will, but they're doing brilliant at the moment.
- 56:47And they've got goals from places I wasn't expected, and they've got players like they always do, Brighton.
- 56:54Stepping up that you've never heard of.
- 56:57What's the new one?
- 56:57Yal Kuei.
- 57:00who's stepped up.
- 57:01I don't know how old he is.
- 57:03He looks older than I think he actually is.
- 57:07But he's come in and done brilliant.
- 57:08The creepers playing left wing or something.
- 57:11I thought he was a full-back.
- 57:13Kostoulas, new centre-forward, done amazing as well.
- 57:16So they keep finding players.
- 57:18Did Gros play much last season or just came back like him?
- 57:22Because I remember him not last season, the season before that, he had a brilliant season, but last season I didn't really see him feature much.
- 57:27He moved, he signed for someone else and then in Germany, I think.
- 57:30There you go, that's why he didn't feature much and he wasn't even in the league.
- 57:33And then he came back probably in January.
- 57:36I mean, I'm just thinking off the top of my head now when he came back, played a little bit and now this season he started on fire.
- 57:43He started as a great player.
- 57:46I still think Arsenal win the league.
- 57:47Hmm.
- 57:48At this moment I'm not going to change I realise that the league has done over 38 games I'm not jumping ship after 5 games like Tony Do you know what it is 5 games later it'll change again Do you know what will be the difference to Viking They haven't got a killer up front and it's going to cost them I'm telling you it's going to cost them They just
- 58:09Erling Haaland's a monster, mate.
- 58:10He's a killer.
- 58:12And he's going to be the difference.
- 58:13City are going to win the league.
- 58:15I think that the difference between the teams we could talk about, actually, is City...
- 58:20In fact, it's what do you want to win?
- 58:22City are banging the goals in at the minute, but their control...
- 58:27defensively of games has not been what it has under Pet so they conceded a three to Sunderland they concede they tend they look like they're going to concede more goals this season but they look like they're going all out of tack that season in Moresca's way we'll score more than you we'll be great City's games are going to be great to watch
- 58:43Arsenal are going to defend the life out of it like they always do and get set pieces and get goals and they have got quality in the team also.
- 58:51So I think the majority of times the best defensive teams tend to win the Premier League.
- 59:00Majority of times you have to have a really good defence, good goalkeeper to win the league.
- 59:06So you'd say they're on top in that, but.
- 59:09I think the Premier League would love to see a City win the league with just blowing teams away, going and winning, scoring fours and fives every single game, scoring, you know, being brilliant on the ball.
- 59:20Not really, I'm not saying not caring about defender, but trying to make it look like it's not as important.
- 59:25If you could just outscore your...
- 59:27In boxing terms, it's basically going with no defence and just thinking, I'm going to knock it all out in the first couple of rounds.
- 59:33That's the way City are going about it at the minute.
- 59:35Arsenal are trying to win on points every game.
- 59:39I just think that they're so clinical in front of goal and the goals are coming from everywhere with City.
- 59:45And okay, yeah, they might be a bit leaky with defence, but it doesn't really bother, matter to anyone.
- 59:52You're winning games.
- 59:54And you're winning games.
- 59:56Listen to me, just win five-three every week.
- 59:57You'd be happy.
- 59:58No one's asked if you can see three goals because you'd score five.
- 1:00:02And that's the name of the game.
- 1:00:03Score more than the team you're playing against, and that's it.
- 1:00:05And I just think they're so...
- 1:00:07brutal on the attack going forward.
- 1:00:10I think Arsenal played really good football.
- 1:00:11It's really nice to see, but I'm telling you, they're going to pay the price for not having a killer up top.
- 1:00:16And we all see where I am.
- 1:00:18I don't know.
- 1:00:18I don't know.
- 1:00:19Kai Havertz is a really good footballer.
- 1:00:22You know, Jocker's numbers last season were decent 20 goals in his first season in English football.
- 1:00:28That's quite good, but that's for the whole season.
- 1:00:31And Kai Havertz... Have you noticed he's not getting a game now, though?
- 1:00:33Yeah.
- 1:00:34Marteta's sort of saying, although you scored the goals and you ran over the top, your football play, your build-up play is not as good as Havertz has given us.
- 1:00:41So he's going with the footballer rather than...
- 1:00:44The Bruce, who's running over the top and physically trying to score goals.
- 1:00:49I think that's interesting.
- 1:00:50But Arsenal will try and keep clean sheets.
- 1:00:53And that is the hope that it will get them over the line.
- 1:00:58And I think they've got a bit more know-how.
- 1:01:01from winning the league is what I mean.
- 1:01:03I think they've learnt a lot from winning the league.
- 1:01:05They won't panic having lost that game.
- 1:01:07It might reset them.
- 1:01:09It might remind a few of them that they're in a, you know, the difficulties that you have to overcome during the season.
- 1:01:17So I'm not quite worried for Arsenal.
- 1:01:19In the same sense of, I think, talked about us before in terms of keeping clean sheets, it's a good building block.
- 1:01:28It's a good way to have a foundation.
- 1:01:30And although it might not be as pleasing on the eye for fans at times, it is more effective.
- 1:01:36I mean, yes, Ipswich had 10 men for the majority of the game.
- 1:01:39But how many teams have you seen lose with 10 men?
- 1:01:42Manchester United played three times against 10 men in the last year, I think, lost all three.
- 1:01:47You know, we beat them at their place where we had 10 men for the majority of the game.
- 1:01:50It's not easy to sort of play against 10 men.
- 1:01:53Yeah, apart from one little block, I know there was a lot of nervousness in the stadium.
- 1:01:58Our defence was solid.
- 1:01:59Our defence was good.
- 1:02:01We look pretty good defensively overall.
- 1:02:03So, yeah, it's a good building block, I think, to start your team defensively.
- 1:02:12One team that we do need to worry about to round up this week is Tony's fantasy football team, sitting there right at the bottom of the barrel.
- 1:02:22It's only three teams, Liam, and you're getting very hopeful very early on, so not that's how you get your heart broken.
- 1:02:29He's all goody because he's top.
- 1:02:32I've been top for five weeks, boys.
- 1:02:34It's early days, son, it's early days.
- 1:02:37I'm not on the bench, shall I?
- 1:02:41Even though I've used me triple captain and used me wildcard and I've used me bench boost and I'm still not top.
- 1:02:48But I've not been paying attention to it.
- 1:02:50I've not been paying attention, promise.
- 1:02:52Wow.
- 1:02:53Wildcard, triple captain and bench boost.
- 1:02:56Wow, you've been at it in the first five weeks.
- 1:02:59I used me wildcard this week and absolutely blew up.
- 1:03:03Scored less points than I would have.
- 1:03:05I went and had a look.
- 1:03:06If I'd have left my team as it was, I'd have scored more points than when I used my wildcard.
- 1:03:10That's a kill, man.
- 1:03:11I'm going to be all right.
- 1:03:12I will start picking up points.
- 1:03:14I'm a slow starter.
- 1:03:17For anyone who's listening, is there a way of posting our sort of teams and our scores?
- 1:03:21We don't need to do that, Leon.
- 1:03:22Let's just figure out that.
- 1:03:24Maybe they can compare how their teams are doing.
- 1:03:27Is there a way of doing that?
- 1:03:28Yeah, we can pop it up on the episode or we'll do a social post.
- 1:03:31I was thinking, should we have some sort of punishment for the loser at the end of the season?
- 1:03:33I'll piss off.
- 1:03:35You can't just say that now when we're sitting.
- 1:03:39Okay, I'll abide by it.
- 1:03:41I'll take to it.
- 1:03:42Something like what?
- 1:03:43Are we talking?
- 1:03:45Swimming across the Albert Dock?
- 1:03:48No, I'm not a good swimmer.
- 1:03:50We lose Aussie.
- 1:03:51Yeah, no thanks.
- 1:03:52That's to be something we can do.
- 1:03:58What have you did?
- 1:03:59I don't know.
- 1:04:01Let's see if there's any suggestions come in.
- 1:04:03People suggest the punishment.
- 1:04:04Yeah, true.
- 1:04:05Put it in the comments.
- 1:04:06Let's just get this out here now.
- 1:04:08No one's putting a Liverpool top on.
- 1:04:10So, for any Copites, we'll listen to this because of the strange lot.
- 1:04:15I'm not putting a Liverpool top on now.
- 1:04:17So, just don't even think about it.
- 1:04:19Me either.
- 1:04:19That's fair.
- 1:04:20That's right there.
- 1:04:21Yeah.
- 1:04:21Yeah, that's a non-negotiable, that.
