- 0:00Speaker 1: This is the Benn and Ashley I Almost Famous podcast
- 0:03Speaker 1: with her radio Hey, Almost Famous friends, family, Bachelor Nation lovers,
- 0:13Speaker 1: We're so pumped. Today we are continuing the party leading
- 0:16Speaker 1: up to this season of the Bachelorette with Gabby and Rachel.
- 0:19Speaker 1: And today we have a very special guest who might
- 0:22Speaker 1: know a thing or two about this season. The host
- 0:25Speaker 1: of the show, Jesse Palmer, is joining us right now.
- 0:30Speaker 1: Hello Jesse, Hello sir. How are you. I'm doing well? Man,
- 0:34Speaker 1: I'm doing really good. You're busy right now. How you're
- 0:38Speaker 1: holding up? I'm holding up good. Stomach feels great. I've
- 0:41Speaker 1: been in Mexico for a while now shooting Bachelor in Paradise,
- 0:44Speaker 1: so digestion is at an all time high. Doing well.
- 0:46Speaker 1: I cannot complain. It's been It's been a lot of
- 0:49Speaker 1: fun down here in Mexico and obviously really excited about
- 0:52Speaker 1: July eleven for the premier of Bachelorette. Man, you you
- 0:56Speaker 1: hit the ground running. I want to start by We've
- 0:59Speaker 1: talked about to before on here, but I want to
- 1:01Speaker 1: kind of mention it again. Uh, you did just get married.
- 1:06Speaker 1: Uh filming for the Bachelor happened fairly soon after that.
- 1:14Speaker 1: Is your wife able to travel with you, She's able
- 1:18Speaker 1: to come out for for short fursts of time, and
- 1:21Speaker 1: that is critical to our marriage and a success of
- 1:24Speaker 1: that so far in these early stages. Um, it's been
- 1:27Speaker 1: really nice through Clayton Season, throughout the Bachelorette, even down
- 1:30Speaker 1: here in Paradise, Emily has been able to come down
- 1:33Speaker 1: for uh, for for sometimes weeks at a time, which
- 1:37Speaker 1: has been really really great to have her company and um,
- 1:39Speaker 1: just so she doesn't forget what I look like and
- 1:41Speaker 1: vice versa. Yeah, I mean, how are you navigating? I mean,
- 1:44Speaker 1: I'm I'm a newly wed myself. It comes with its amazing, amazing,
- 1:50Speaker 1: beautiful moments and times together, but it's also challenging because
- 1:54Speaker 1: you're kind of figuring out what life looks like. How
- 1:56Speaker 1: are you navigating newly wed life while also being on
- 1:58Speaker 1: the road. Great question, It's it's really for me, it's
- 2:02Speaker 1: always been about one day at a time, I guess,
- 2:04Speaker 1: and just trying to focus on, you know, that day
- 2:07Speaker 1: and whether it's at home with Emily or whether it's
- 2:10Speaker 1: on the road filming. You know, we just sort of
- 2:11Speaker 1: try to take it and stride. Um. We're really enjoying
- 2:15Speaker 1: this process. To kind of add to the complexity of
- 2:18Speaker 1: everything that's happening in our lives professionally. We also just
- 2:21Speaker 1: moved to Miami, so we're in this new home and
- 2:24Speaker 1: we're trying to get it decorated and we're buying this
- 2:26Speaker 1: furniture and I've I've been home like six nights and
- 2:29Speaker 1: three months, and so, like, you know, it's also that
- 2:33Speaker 1: So it's just about trying to find time to to
- 2:36Speaker 1: you know, FaceTime each other as much as possible and
- 2:38Speaker 1: and interact and get her down here as much as
- 2:41Speaker 1: we can. Um. But I gotta say, you know, maybe
- 2:44Speaker 1: it's because we're still very new at this whole marriage thing,
- 2:47Speaker 1: and we've still got a lot of energy and we're
- 2:48Speaker 1: still like, you know, very excited. But it's actually gone,
- 2:52Speaker 1: it's gone quite well. It's gone pretty well, and we're
- 2:54Speaker 1: just handling it in stride. What are some of the things,
- 2:57Speaker 1: like the characteristics that she shares that helps you do
- 3:01Speaker 1: this kind of with a free mind, focus on your
- 3:04Speaker 1: job and not you know, because none of us are
- 3:07Speaker 1: our best and we're feeling guilty or burdened by something.
- 3:09Speaker 1: So what does she do for you to concourage you
- 3:11Speaker 1: during this time? Yeah, that's a great question. I think
- 3:15Speaker 1: Emily is really good, um at just sort of giving
- 3:18Speaker 1: me the mental space to sort of put my best
- 3:22Speaker 1: effort into doing this or ESPN or whatever the job is.
- 3:26Speaker 1: She sorts. She sort of knows that my work is
- 3:29Speaker 1: a big part of my life, and I think she
- 3:30Speaker 1: gives me space that to sort of do that. Um.
- 3:33Speaker 1: I think we know that balance is obviously a really
- 3:35Speaker 1: really important thing for us, and it's really critical that
- 3:38Speaker 1: we find the alone time for just her or not,
- 3:40Speaker 1: whether that's home in Miami or if that's going to
- 3:43Speaker 1: Brazil to go see your family or traveling somewhere just
- 3:45Speaker 1: getting away and turning our phones off. You know, having
- 3:48Speaker 1: that happy balance I think is really special. Um. She's
- 3:52Speaker 1: she's that the person that knows like, okay, like if
- 3:54Speaker 1: you're off the clock and you're not working, we need
- 3:57Speaker 1: to be right here. Like I can't see I don't
- 3:59Speaker 1: want to see on the phone, I don't want to
- 4:01Speaker 1: see you face on and people are doing whatever that
- 4:03Speaker 1: that has something to do with work. But one thing
- 4:05Speaker 1: I really appreciate about Emily is that she does give
- 4:08Speaker 1: me the space to do all this because in my
- 4:10Speaker 1: Maslow's hierarchy of needs in the pyramid, work is pretty
- 4:14Speaker 1: high up. It's important to me, and it's you know,
- 4:17Speaker 1: this is something I love doing, and I take a
- 4:19Speaker 1: lot of pride in what I do and I want
- 4:21Speaker 1: to be the best that I can be at it,
- 4:23Speaker 1: and she gives me the space and allows me to
- 4:24Speaker 1: do that. If that makes any sense, it makes a
- 4:26Speaker 1: lot of sense. I mean it's important. And you know,
- 4:29Speaker 1: nobody that's a fan of The Bachelor is unfamiliar with
- 4:32Speaker 1: the time commitment that it takes. Uh, you know, especially
- 4:36Speaker 1: for the contestants. They get to hear about it. Uh
- 4:39Speaker 1: after their season's film. Contestants come on, leads come on
- 4:42Speaker 1: and they say, hey, that was wild, Like we were
- 4:43Speaker 1: up till ridiculous hours in the morning, up really early
- 4:47Speaker 1: the next morning filming again. It's it's you know, months
- 4:50Speaker 1: of shooting. You know, for the host, I don't think
- 4:53Speaker 1: we get a great picture of your time commitment. So
- 4:56Speaker 1: if you don't mind, kind of walk, let's do paradise.
- 4:59Speaker 1: Since you're there right now, you're familiar with what does
- 5:01Speaker 1: your daily routine look like? So this is I would say,
- 5:05Speaker 1: And because of course I'm so new to this and
- 5:07Speaker 1: I don't know if it's like this every year. I
- 5:09Speaker 1: can only talk on my personal experience, but what I
- 5:11Speaker 1: would say, Paradise at least is a much more intensive
- 5:15Speaker 1: shooting schedule than say The Bachelor Bachelorette. I feel like
- 5:19Speaker 1: here in Paradise, we're filming every day, and I have
- 5:23Speaker 1: a role somehow somewhere in most days of filming. Sometimes
- 5:28Speaker 1: on the Bachelor Bachelorette you might get a day or
- 5:31Speaker 1: two days off in between a rose ceremony and maybe
- 5:34Speaker 1: a group date or something where you're not needed. You're
- 5:36Speaker 1: always on standby and literally you're on call if they
- 5:40Speaker 1: need you to kind of run in, um, to help
- 5:42Speaker 1: put out a fire or do whatever you got to
- 5:44Speaker 1: go do that. But I'd say here, uh, it's basically
- 5:48Speaker 1: every day, and um, a day could be four hours,
- 5:53Speaker 1: a day could be fifteen hours down here. Um, the
- 5:57Speaker 1: rose ceremonies here in Paradise just as long as the
- 6:01Speaker 1: rose ceremonies on The Bachelor for the Bachelorette. So, UM,
- 6:05Speaker 1: I hope I won't get in trouble by saying this,
- 6:07Speaker 1: but uh, I wrapped one ROAs ceremony down here at
- 6:10Speaker 1: like six am, six thirty am. I don't think people
- 6:15Speaker 1: can watch this and see the sun coming up. Nobody
- 6:17Speaker 1: shocked those like last out, Like dude, it's like the
- 6:20Speaker 1: cocktail party. Like you're you're in the palapa and you're
- 6:23Speaker 1: like kicking off the cocktail party at like like right
- 6:26Speaker 1: as it gets dark at like and then all of
- 6:29Speaker 1: a sudden, you know, you look down and it's it's
- 6:32Speaker 1: five am, and you know you're you're your tink tinking
- 6:34Speaker 1: and trying to get everybody into the set up for
- 6:37Speaker 1: the rose ceremony. So these are definitely very long days.
- 6:40Speaker 1: They're just one after another after another. Um, So I
- 6:44Speaker 1: have I have a tremendous respect not just for the cast,
- 6:48Speaker 1: but the crew and these cameramen and these ops and
- 6:52Speaker 1: lighting and producers and everybody that have the real hard
- 6:56Speaker 1: jobs out in the sun and like a hundred degree
- 6:58Speaker 1: weather all day, wrong days, every day for a month.
- 7:03Speaker 1: I mean, it is brutal. And what they do, the
- 7:05Speaker 1: job they do, the people, the hundreds of people, and
- 7:07Speaker 1: you've seen this. They're literally hundreds and hundreds of people
- 7:11Speaker 1: to get on planes and fly places to make this
- 7:13Speaker 1: show happen. What they do to me is amazing, and
- 7:16Speaker 1: I think I have a much I have much more
- 7:18Speaker 1: of an appreciation for them after watching them do this show.
- 7:21Speaker 1: Because this this this is a unique beast in itself.
- 7:24Speaker 1: It really is. Yeah, I I remember Jesse. I think
- 7:27Speaker 1: we were in the Bahamas during my season, and there's
- 7:29Speaker 1: men and women behind the scenes that are working, like
- 7:32Speaker 1: you said, tirelessly on making sure that the content is
- 7:36Speaker 1: being filmed. There was a moment it was really hot
- 7:40Speaker 1: and two of their um I won't say their names,
- 7:44Speaker 1: but it was a man and a woman. They're they're
- 7:46Speaker 1: kind of working together doing the camera and then the
- 7:49Speaker 1: cameras assistant. And it was so hot that they took
- 7:52Speaker 1: off their shirts and they were ringing out the sweat.
- 7:55Speaker 1: I still just from dripping because you're carrying I don't
- 7:58Speaker 1: know how heavy these cameras are, fifty pounds, forty pounds
- 8:01Speaker 1: on your shoulder for hours. Now. They love doing it.
- 8:04Speaker 1: This is what they've wanted to do there, you know,
- 8:06Speaker 1: but like and they do it with joy most of
- 8:08Speaker 1: the time. But it's a hard job. It's so true,
- 8:12Speaker 1: you know, it's so funny you say that. I was.
- 8:14Speaker 1: I was taking a golf cart this morning with one
- 8:15Speaker 1: of our camera ops and she was telling me about
- 8:18Speaker 1: filming recently on one of the seasons she's been on.
- 8:21Speaker 1: She's been on working on the show for a couple
- 8:23Speaker 1: of years now. Um, she loves doing it so much
- 8:26Speaker 1: so that she was pregnant and still did it. She
- 8:30Speaker 1: was carrying these cameras around and luging all this equipment.
- 8:33Speaker 1: She's like five six months pregnant, and she just loved
- 8:35Speaker 1: She just loved being out here doing it. And I
- 8:38Speaker 1: mean she just didn't want to be away from and
- 8:40Speaker 1: obviously she was able. She told me later that she
- 8:41Speaker 1: took some maternity leave and she was able to get
- 8:43Speaker 1: away and sort of settled down and make sure everything
- 8:45Speaker 1: was in order. But it's their credit too. I think
- 8:48Speaker 1: that's what makes this so much fun, is that it
- 8:49Speaker 1: really does feel like a family. I don't know how
- 8:51Speaker 1: you felt about what you did, but what I've sort
- 8:53Speaker 1: of learned in these last couple of seasons is that
- 8:56Speaker 1: it's the same. Like I love seeing the same faces
- 8:58Speaker 1: behind the cameras and the same person setting up your micre.
- 9:01Speaker 1: There all are a big family. They travel the world,
- 9:04Speaker 1: and they work these insane schedules all throughout all throughout
- 9:07Speaker 1: the year. They have to give up things and sacrifice
- 9:10Speaker 1: things with their own families and being back home to
- 9:13Speaker 1: make this whole thing even possible, and so it really
- 9:17Speaker 1: really is amazing. It is uh. And we won't say
- 9:20Speaker 1: any names, but they do share with me it is
- 9:23Speaker 1: a family. They give me hugs when I come back,
- 9:25Speaker 1: which makes me feel very loved and accepted and special.
- 9:28Speaker 1: But I do know that filming Paradise is easier than
- 9:32Speaker 1: filming a show that takes place on an island on
- 9:35Speaker 1: a different network, in the middle of the jungle with
- 9:37Speaker 1: snakes and gaiters and everything else. We won't mention the names,
- 9:41Speaker 1: but they do tell me that this is a lot
- 9:43Speaker 1: better and a lot easier. Jesse, I do want to
- 9:57Speaker 1: walk into then this season of your life you have now,
- 10:00Speaker 1: you're not completely done with paradise, but you you get
- 10:03Speaker 1: a good grasp of what paradise is. You've done a
- 10:06Speaker 1: bachelor season, a bachelorette season that we're gonna talk a
- 10:09Speaker 1: lot about here coming up. Uh, and you are familiar
- 10:13Speaker 1: now with paradise and how that works in films. Uh.
- 10:17Speaker 1: Is it more than you thought it would be? Is
- 10:19Speaker 1: it less? Are you stressed? Are you having good time
- 10:22Speaker 1: with it? Just? Where are you at now that you
- 10:24Speaker 1: kind of get an understanding of this whole bachelor universe again? Yeah,
- 10:28Speaker 1: I'm really having a good time with it. I think
- 10:29Speaker 1: it sort of goes back again to just trying to
- 10:32Speaker 1: itemize each thing and doing one thing at a time.
- 10:34Speaker 1: It started with Clayton season, and my focus was just
- 10:38Speaker 1: on Matt and that was a real big learning curve
- 10:41Speaker 1: every single day, you know, hosting that show for the
- 10:44Speaker 1: first time and sort of reacclimating to the Bachelor verse
- 10:48Speaker 1: and sort of being in it and kind of understanding
- 10:51Speaker 1: that role and trying to feel comfortable doing it, trying
- 10:54Speaker 1: to be authentic doing it UM. And then into Rachel
- 10:58Speaker 1: and Gabby season, there were there were a few subtle
- 11:01Speaker 1: differences and I think you know that that you know
- 11:04Speaker 1: that came about with that and that was its own
- 11:07Speaker 1: learning curve as well. And obviously Paradise Paradise to me
- 11:10Speaker 1: feels like an entirely different show Bachelor Bachelor that, at
- 11:12Speaker 1: least to me sort of felt like they sort of
- 11:15Speaker 1: mirror each other. This one, in particular, I think is
- 11:17Speaker 1: is kind of a different animal um which was which
- 11:20Speaker 1: is good in a lot of ways. I think it
- 11:21Speaker 1: feels fresh, it feels new, Uh, it sort of allows
- 11:25Speaker 1: you to be a little bit more re energized going
- 11:26Speaker 1: into it. UM. You know, I feel like it's nice
- 11:29Speaker 1: having little breaks of time in between each show, um,
- 11:33Speaker 1: which has definitely helped. But I've really just tried to
- 11:35Speaker 1: sort of be present in the moment, uh, throughout each one,
- 11:39Speaker 1: and for me at least, I really feel like that's
- 11:41Speaker 1: helped me a lot because this whole year, this whole
- 11:45Speaker 1: year of these seasons of shows has been uh eye opening,
- 11:49Speaker 1: and it's been uh, I've learned a lot. I've just
- 11:52Speaker 1: tried to not talk a lot and just sort of
- 11:53Speaker 1: watch and and try to learn and figure it out
- 11:55Speaker 1: and ask a lot of questions. And I'm just having
- 11:58Speaker 1: a blast, Like I love it, like to the point
- 12:00Speaker 1: where I can't wait now for the next like Bachelor,
- 12:03Speaker 1: like I can't wait for the next show whatever it is,
- 12:06Speaker 1: just because it's like I'm having so much fun doing it. Well,
- 12:09Speaker 1: that's great to hear because it is a lot, and
- 12:11Speaker 1: you could easily have walked into this the whole world
- 12:15Speaker 1: and then a year later been like, this is not
- 12:17Speaker 1: what I thought it was, this is what am I doing.
- 12:25Speaker 1: It's been it's been good. It's been good. Like what's
- 12:27Speaker 1: helped me too, is there are a lot of familiar
- 12:29Speaker 1: faces here from when I was the Bachelor fifteen years ago,
- 12:33Speaker 1: and so I think that the family atmosphere here has
- 12:36Speaker 1: really helped helped me feel and everybody has been so great.
- 12:40Speaker 1: They've been so nice and welcoming and helpful. So I'm
- 12:43Speaker 1: sort of internally grateful for that, and just you know,
- 12:46Speaker 1: for people support at home and online and Battel Nation.
- 12:50Speaker 1: Everything has really helped me along tremendously throughout all this. Yeah,
- 12:55Speaker 1: you know, it's uh, and we won't go into any diesel,
- 12:57Speaker 1: but it was just a it's a it was a
- 12:59Speaker 1: big transition for a lot of people, right. Uh, it
- 13:02Speaker 1: was a legacy and then Bill and then a whole
- 13:05Speaker 1: new thing. What are you doing to kind of add
- 13:07Speaker 1: your own flavor to the show? A show that is
- 13:11Speaker 1: for years and if you talk to the executive producers,
- 13:14Speaker 1: like it has a bread and butter, it knows what works,
- 13:16Speaker 1: it knows what doesn't. How are you adding your own
- 13:20Speaker 1: you know, mixed to this show? Yeah, people people ask
- 13:23Speaker 1: me that sometimes, and I don't know what it is
- 13:25Speaker 1: specifically I'm doing. All I'm trying to do is just
- 13:28Speaker 1: be authentic and real and me. But you're absolutely right, then,
- 13:31Speaker 1: like this thing is formulaic, Like there is a formula,
- 13:34Speaker 1: and it's a set formula and it's sort of it
- 13:36Speaker 1: works every year, and so it's you're trying to sort
- 13:39Speaker 1: of put yourself in that and fit into that formula,
- 13:42Speaker 1: and you know the role you have, But you know,
- 13:47Speaker 1: I just want to be me, and I don't really
- 13:49Speaker 1: know what that is. Like. I'm trying to be compassionate,
- 13:51Speaker 1: I'm trying to show empathy. I'm trying to give advice
- 13:55Speaker 1: when when called upon an asport. The biggest thing I
- 13:59Speaker 1: don't want to do is make it about me. That
- 14:01Speaker 1: That's one thing that's always in the back of my
- 14:03Speaker 1: mind as I do this. This is not about me
- 14:05Speaker 1: at all, and I don't I never want to sound
- 14:08Speaker 1: as if I'm trying to make it that it's about
- 14:12Speaker 1: Clayton and his cast. It's about Rachel and Gabby and
- 14:15Speaker 1: their casts and their journeys to find love. And and
- 14:18Speaker 1: it's to use like an awful sports analogy, it's like
- 14:21Speaker 1: being a quarterback or a point guard and you're just facilitating.
- 14:25Speaker 1: You know, you're you're you take the ball, you told
- 14:27Speaker 1: them what's going on, you give them the ball back,
- 14:29Speaker 1: and you get out of the way. That's really what
- 14:30Speaker 1: I'm trying to do and fit in the formula as
- 14:33Speaker 1: best I can. I guess that's it, And I mean
- 14:35Speaker 1: I think that's important too, because if you tried to
- 14:38Speaker 1: make it about you or control it, it would be
- 14:41Speaker 1: found out very quickly, right, I mean when the show
- 14:44Speaker 1: brought out a new host, Uh, it was important that
- 14:48Speaker 1: somebody had I guess the humbleness and the lack of
- 14:51Speaker 1: ego to not say no, this is my big moment.
- 14:54Speaker 1: ABC's calling, this is my time to shine. Well, it
- 14:59Speaker 1: brings me into then, uh, my final question kind of
- 15:03Speaker 1: my my overall arcing questions, and we'll get into the
- 15:05Speaker 1: gabbing Rachel's season here. Uh, you're the host of this
- 15:08Speaker 1: show now, you have been for a year. You agreed
- 15:12Speaker 1: to do it for multiple reasons. But do you believe
- 15:16Speaker 1: in it? Like, do you think this can work or
- 15:18Speaker 1: is it just a really cool time or do you
- 15:20Speaker 1: see this actually bringing about anything good to the world.
- 15:24Speaker 1: I believe in it, you know, And I believed in
- 15:26Speaker 1: it when I did it fifteen years ago, and in
- 15:29Speaker 1: the time I've been watching since then, I still believe
- 15:31Speaker 1: in it. I think there's a lot of examples of
- 15:33Speaker 1: of couples and beautiful love stories and diverse love stories
- 15:37Speaker 1: that have come from this show. Um, does it work
- 15:40Speaker 1: every single time? No, it doesn't, Um, and we obviously
- 15:43Speaker 1: know that. But this show is about giving people an
- 15:46Speaker 1: opportunity to find love in a very unconventional way. And
- 15:49Speaker 1: I think, UM, what people are going to see what
- 15:51Speaker 1: they saw sort of on Clayton season that was that
- 15:54Speaker 1: was a love story that we had never seen before.
- 15:56Speaker 1: It sort of went off the rails, Um. But at
- 15:59Speaker 1: the end of the day, you know, Clayton and Susie,
- 16:02Speaker 1: you know, they're they're together today and they're happy, and UM,
- 16:06Speaker 1: you know, and it's it's that's really to me, what
- 16:09Speaker 1: what it's it's about. And I think they're going to
- 16:11Speaker 1: see that on Gabby and Rachel's season as well. They're
- 16:13Speaker 1: going to see these beautiful love stories sort of developed
- 16:16Speaker 1: with all different types of people from different backgrounds, um

- 16:35Speaker 1: do at the end of the day. Wow, we have
- 16:37Speaker 1: so much to talk about with Jesse. We have to
- 16:40Speaker 1: get into this season of The Bachelorette, so stay tuned
- 16:44Speaker 1: for Part two of this episode. Again, it's going to
