- 0:22Speaker 1: Music Lands Stories, we have a brand new episode, episode six,

- 0:28Speaker 1: let's get into it, hey, discos. Need a little more
- 0:35Speaker 1: Disgraceland in your life, just to touch to get you through. Yeah,
- 0:39Speaker 1: me too. This is the podcast that comes after the podcast.
- 0:43Speaker 1: Welcome to Disgraceland. The after Partie. Welcome to the Disgraceland
- 1:01Speaker 1: bonus episode. A little thing we like to call the
- 1:03Speaker 1: after party. This is the show after the show, the
- 1:06Speaker 1: party after the party, the bridge to get you from
- 1:09Speaker 1: one full episode of Disgraceland to the other, the backyard
- 1:12Speaker 1: to dig into the dirt. On this episode, we are
- 1:15Speaker 1: talking about, among other things, Surge Gainsburg, Madonna, and of
- 1:20Speaker 1: course your voicemails. Texts, dms and more and as always,
- 1:24Speaker 1: a whole lot of rosa. All right, just goes. Let's
- 1:28Speaker 1: get into it this week in Disgraceland. Come with me, Come, come, come, come,
- 1:46Speaker 1: as we travel over to Paris, France in the late
- 1:48Speaker 1: nineteen sixties, when Serge Gainsburg, the enfant today be sawday
- 1:53Speaker 1: say that tea b How do you say terrible in French?
- 1:57Speaker 1: The bad guy, the bad the bad boy a friend. Okay,
- 2:00Speaker 1: that's not what they called him. That's what I'm calling
- 2:02Speaker 1: them here because I'm kind of brain dead right now.
- 2:04Speaker 1: I've been writing all day and I can't think of
- 2:06Speaker 1: anything clever to say about Serge Gainsburg. But Serge Gainsburg
- 2:09Speaker 1: a very clever dude on his own. Okay, Serge Gainsburg,
- 2:13Speaker 1: great songwriter, but you know, a lot of controversy carried
- 2:16Speaker 1: out a very illicit and very passionate love affair with
- 2:19Speaker 1: Bridget Bardeux, who at the time was the pre eminent
- 2:23Speaker 1: sex symbol in the world on the planet. Together, Surge
- 2:27Speaker 1: and Bridget made great fucking music, as we like to say,
- 2:30Speaker 1: some of the strangest music too. It sounds like still
- 2:34Speaker 1: to this day, it sounds like it came from Another Galaxy,
- 2:36Speaker 1: one of their duets, their classic duet Bonnie and Clyde
- 2:40Speaker 1: Amazing Song. It's a song, of course, inspired by the
- 2:43Speaker 1: infamous American Outlaws back during the Great Depression, just like
- 2:47Speaker 1: Surge and Bridget or Bridgitte were outlaws decades later. What's
- 2:52Speaker 1: really fun about this episode from our perspective is that
- 2:55Speaker 1: we use this song, and we use this duet from
- 2:58Speaker 1: Serge Gainsberg and Bridget Bardeaux and their whole Forbidden Love
- 3:01Speaker 1: affair to tell the story of the real life Bonnie
- 3:05Speaker 1: and Clyde. So it's kind of like you're getting two
- 3:07Speaker 1: stories in one. It's kind of the same setup as
- 3:10Speaker 1: we did the Derek and the Dominoes Eric Clapton episode.
- 3:13Speaker 1: This one, though, it's got a lot more in it.
- 3:16Speaker 1: If I'm being honest, Romance Lust, true Crime, Notorious Outlaws,
- 3:20Speaker 1: Doomed Lovers. You don't have to be a fan of
- 3:22Speaker 1: Serge Gainsburg to get into this episode, but you will
- 3:25Speaker 1: be a fan of Serge Gainsburg afterward if you give
- 3:28Speaker 1: his music a shot, if you've never heard of him,
- 3:30Speaker 1: if you're like, who the hell is this guy? I
- 3:32Speaker 1: don't give a shit about French pop stars. French crooners,
- 3:36Speaker 1: doesn't matter, you're gonna get into this guy. Hugely influential
- 3:38Speaker 1: on American music as well, especially American indie music, alternative music.
- 3:43Speaker 1: If you like Beck, Beck was massively influenced by Serge Gainsburg,
- 3:47Speaker 1: particularly the Great Bech record See Change. That record is
- 3:54Speaker 1: just very very directly influenced by Serge Gainsburg's album History
- 3:59Speaker 1: Dat Melody Nelson. You listen to both these records back
- 4:02Speaker 1: to back and you can really hear what I'm talking about. So,
- 4:05Speaker 1: if you've never heard Serge Gainsburg, like I said, check
- 4:08Speaker 1: them out and let me know what you think. Six
- 4:09Speaker 1: one seven nine oh six six six three eight. If
- 4:11Speaker 1: you have heard Surge Gainsburg, hit me up six one
- 4:14Speaker 1: seven nine oh six six six three eight and let
- 4:16Speaker 1: me know what your favorite Surge music is. There's a
- 4:19Speaker 1: lot of different phases. The early stuff is much different
- 4:22Speaker 1: than the mid period stuff, which is much different from
- 4:24Speaker 1: the later stuff. He had a long, long, long career,
- 4:27Speaker 1: And you know, if you just want to let me
- 4:28Speaker 1: know what you thought of this episode creatively, the swing,
- 4:30Speaker 1: we took at it, how we went at it, Get
- 4:33Speaker 1: at me okay six one seven nine oh six six
- 4:35Speaker 1: six three eight, let's talk about it. This Surge Gainsburg episode.
- 4:39Speaker 1: It marks the start of our new episodes for twenty
- 4:42Speaker 1: twenty four. We've got a bunch of new stuff coming
- 4:45Speaker 1: your way over the coming month, lots from the from
- 4:48Speaker 1: the world of music. And then after that in February,
- 4:51Speaker 1: we're going to start to broaden our scope here in
- 4:53Speaker 1: the Disgrace LAMD feed like we've been discussing. I'll have
- 4:56Speaker 1: more on that soon, but before that, before all that, tomorrow,
- 4:59Speaker 1: we've got Rewind, what we're calling our Rewind release from
- 5:03Speaker 1: our archive on Madonna. Just to put it in your
- 5:06Speaker 1: head what we're doing here. If you're looking at the feed,
- 5:08Speaker 1: and I know there's been a lot of turmoil over
- 5:10Speaker 1: the feed in the last year, I think what's gonna
- 5:12Speaker 1: happen this year? The way we're gonna roll it out
- 5:14Speaker 1: every week, Tuesday's full episode, Thursdays bonus episode like we're doing,
- 5:18Speaker 1: We're gonna keep doing on Fridays these rewind episodes. We're
- 5:22Speaker 1: gonna keep bringing back episodes from the archive. Because here's
- 5:26Speaker 1: what's happening. Not only are there a lot of new
- 5:28Speaker 1: listeners who have no idea what's in the archive, I'm
- 5:31Speaker 1: talking to some of you guys on Instagram, some of
- 5:34Speaker 1: you guys on X and it's dawning on me that
- 5:38Speaker 1: even newer new Ish listeners, like from the last year,
- 5:42Speaker 1: who didn't start with us way way way back in
- 5:44Speaker 1: the beginning, like a lot of you guys did, you're
- 5:47Speaker 1: asking me for episodes that we've already produced. People are
- 5:50Speaker 1: asking me for Guns N' Roses episodes, Johnny Cash episode.
- 5:54Speaker 1: I can't remember the last one I did, and I'm like, hey,
- 5:57Speaker 1: we did that. It's there, it's available, it's ready for
- 6:00Speaker 1: So I think we're going to start, you know, we're
- 6:02Speaker 1: going to continue, I should say, releasing these archive rewind
- 6:04Speaker 1: episodes on Fridays, bubbling them back up in your feed
- 6:07Speaker 1: so you got them there. If you heard them before,
- 6:09Speaker 1: you can re listen to them. Okay, this isn't a
- 6:11Speaker 1: chat podcast, obviously, this is a scripted, heavily sound designed,
- 6:15Speaker 1: and dramatic type of show. So you can re listen
- 6:18Speaker 1: to these, but that's not the point. We're just trying
- 6:20Speaker 1: to get the folks who are new or new Ish
- 6:24Speaker 1: to hear all the one hundred and thirty plus full
- 6:28Speaker 1: episodes that we've created. So many and I realized over
- 6:31Speaker 1: the last couple of weeks, I got to do a
- 6:33Speaker 1: better job of resurfacing those so that I can bring
- 6:36Speaker 1: everybody back into the archive. So that's what we'll be doing.
- 6:38Speaker 1: Tuesdays full episodes, Thursdays bonus episodes. Fridays, we're going to
- 6:42Speaker 1: stay on this rewind episode train. All right, there you
- 6:45Speaker 1: go this Friday. Madonna one of my favorite artists of
- 6:48Speaker 1: all time. That's right, I said it. Madonna. Okay, love her,
- 6:52Speaker 1: love her. And when I say her, I'm talking about eighties,
- 6:56Speaker 1: nineties Madonna. Okay, I didn't go, you know, two thousands.
- 6:58Speaker 1: I was. I was out out and I'm kind of
- 7:00Speaker 1: out now, I guess. But for a period of time, Madonna,
- 7:05Speaker 1: like most young men my age at the time, captivated
- 7:09Speaker 1: my imagination. I should say. We'll leave it at that
- 7:11Speaker 1: borderline too. Who one of my favorite songs, You guys
- 7:14Speaker 1: know the six one seven nine oh six, six six
- 7:16Speaker 1: three eight, Your favorite era Madonna. Let me know your
- 7:19Speaker 1: favorite Madonna tune, your favorite Madonna video, let me know. Okay,
- 7:22Speaker 1: I want to hear. I want to hear from you guys.
- 7:25Speaker 1: Quick story on Madonna. I don't know if this is true.
- 7:27Speaker 1: I like to believe it's true. It was told to
- 7:29Speaker 1: me by multiple people. I'm sure there are are some
- 7:32Speaker 1: of you out there from the from the hardcore scene.
- 7:34Speaker 1: You are going to hear this story and you're gonna
- 7:36Speaker 1: be able to verify it for me or tell me
- 7:40Speaker 1: that I'm that I'm totally wrong and that I got
- 7:41Speaker 1: it wrong. Here's a deal. There was a hardcore band
- 7:43Speaker 1: called The Night still is I believe I think they
- 7:45Speaker 1: still might even play southern California and my band Castarnhike
- 7:50Speaker 1: toured with these guys. They were a notorious, notorious band.
- 7:53Speaker 1: We were warned up and down before we went on
- 7:55Speaker 1: tour with them of how to deal with these guys.
- 7:58Speaker 1: They were older than us, they were nastier and us.
- 8:00Speaker 1: They're crazier than us. And those warnings they were, they were,
- 8:05Speaker 1: they came with good reason. They were well intended, ignite
- 8:09Speaker 1: where everything you know off stage that we were told.
- 8:12Speaker 1: They were a bunch of good guys as well. But
- 8:14Speaker 1: one of the guys, the guitar player, his name escapes
- 8:16Speaker 1: me at the moment, and this is a long long
- 8:18Speaker 1: time ago, really good looking dude, and he did some
- 8:21Speaker 1: modeling and the rumor on him was that he was
- 8:26Speaker 1: in a Madonna video, And this is the story I
- 8:29Speaker 1: got from if I believe from him firsthand. And again
- 8:32Speaker 1: a lot of you from the hardcore scenem going to
- 8:33Speaker 1: know the story, so let me know. Apparently, he goes
- 8:35Speaker 1: into audition for this Madonna video as a as a backup,
- 8:39Speaker 1: like a dancer, like and I can't remember. I think
- 8:41Speaker 1: it was the Express Yourself video. I could be wrong,
- 8:43Speaker 1: but something in that era. So he goes in with
- 8:45Speaker 1: his buddy and of course everyone's going in and they're
- 8:47Speaker 1: all like, you know, they're all doing dance moves and
- 8:50Speaker 1: these choreographed things that they've worked up to kind of
- 8:52Speaker 1: impress Madonna. And this guy goes in there with his
- 8:55Speaker 1: buddy and they're these two hardcore kids, but they're good looking,
- 8:57Speaker 1: you know, and they just like take their shirts off
- 9:00Speaker 1: and start fucking slam dancing in front of Madonna in
- 9:03Speaker 1: the audition, and of course got the audition and they're
- 9:06Speaker 1: in the video. I thought that was very cool. If
- 9:09Speaker 1: anyone knows that they can fill in the gaps there
- 9:11Speaker 1: for the story, hit me up. Anyone knows who I'm
- 9:13Speaker 1: talking about, hit him up. It's been a long time,
- 9:16Speaker 1: and uh, you know, I just thought i'd share that
- 9:18Speaker 1: that's my Madonna's story. It's not even mine, it's somebody else's,
- 9:20Speaker 1: but I thought you might like that. All right, we'll
- 9:22Speaker 1: be back in a minute and answer some emails. Can
- 9:24Speaker 1: answer some voicemails, going to answer some texts. Can't wait
- 9:26Speaker 1: to talk to y'all. All Right, we are back. Let's
- 9:50Speaker 1: talk at this email here, you guys, you can email
- 9:52Speaker 1: me Disgrace lampod at gmail dot com. This one comes
- 9:55Speaker 1: from Mark Whu len Kamaki. If I'm saying that wrong, Marku.
- 9:58Speaker 1: If I'm pronouncing your name wrong, I apologize. Mark Who
- 10:02Speaker 1: goes on to write, Hey, Jake, I've been a big
- 10:04Speaker 1: fan of your podcast for a few years now and
- 10:06Speaker 1: I've listened to every episode. I like to hear an
- 10:08Speaker 1: episode on country outlaw Steve Earle. He's lived a hard life,
- 10:13Speaker 1: been to prison and even being compared to Hanoi, Jane.
- 10:16Speaker 1: I also have a TV show in movie suggestion for
- 10:18Speaker 1: you that you should check out. The series is called
- 10:20Speaker 1: From and it's on Paramount and the movie is the
- 10:23Speaker 1: older one called Frailty with Bill Paxton and Matthew McConaughey.
- 10:27Speaker 1: Keep up the great work, Mark Who, Mark Who, So
- 10:30Speaker 1: check it out. I'm definitely doing a Steve Earrel episode
- 10:32Speaker 1: at some point. I love Steve Earl. I was listening
- 10:35Speaker 1: to him the other day, as a matter of fact,
- 10:36Speaker 1: Harlem River Blues. I was also listening to I Feel Alright,
- 10:40Speaker 1: which is from the mid nineties early nineties. Guitar Town.
- 10:45Speaker 1: Steve Earl's first record is a perfect record in my estimation,
- 10:49Speaker 1: even with the production that I don't love. That's how
- 10:52Speaker 1: good the songs are that I think. I still think
- 10:54Speaker 1: the album's perfect. How can it be perfect if from
- 10:56Speaker 1: criticizing the production, I don't know. I just feel like
- 10:58Speaker 1: saying that sounds like I know what I'm talking about.
- 11:00Speaker 1: I really don't know. I'm full of shit just like
- 11:02Speaker 1: everyone else. But I love Steve Earrel and I've met
- 11:04Speaker 1: Steve Earl a couple different times. And I'm in a
- 11:07Speaker 1: storytelling mood, as you can tell from the Ignit story
- 11:09Speaker 1: early on, so I'll tell you this story. Steve Earl
- 11:13Speaker 1: was one of my favorite singer songwriters when I was
- 11:18Speaker 1: making music. He was the model for the record that
- 11:22Speaker 1: I was trying to make with my band, The Confidence
- 11:25Speaker 1: Man at one point in time. Guitar Town, like I said,
- 11:28Speaker 1: was the model I should say not Steve Earl and
- 11:31Speaker 1: Steve and I. Steve had a fellow that he worked
- 11:34Speaker 1: with when he got out of prison named Jack Emerson,
- 11:37Speaker 1: who started a record label called E Squared, who I
- 11:39Speaker 1: started working with as well, not on East Squared, on
- 11:43Speaker 1: an imprint of Warner Brothers at the time that Jack
- 11:46Speaker 1: had started called Jack of Hearts. So very unfortunately, mister
- 11:53Speaker 1: Jack Emerson died. He died young while we were in
- 11:55Speaker 1: the process of working with each other. And of course
- 11:58Speaker 1: I went down to Nashville and I played at his
- 12:02Speaker 1: going away party, for lack of a better word. His
- 12:05Speaker 1: memorial was at this club, the Exit, in Steve Earl,
- 12:09Speaker 1: Jason and the Scorchers, John Hyatt, Billy Joe Shaver, all
- 12:12Speaker 1: these artists who Jack had worked with were playing and me,
- 12:16Speaker 1: and it felt a lot like being at a somebody
- 12:21Speaker 1: else's high school reunion. But I got up there and
- 12:23Speaker 1: I played, and I had a lot of fun. I
- 12:26Speaker 1: think I did a great job, if I do say
- 12:27Speaker 1: so myself. But I met Steve Earl that night for
- 12:30Speaker 1: the first time, and I do remember Warren from Jason
- 12:35Speaker 1: and the Scorchers being very very kind to me and
- 12:38Speaker 1: making sure that I felt alright. Punintended backstage without knowing
- 12:42Speaker 1: many people there, and yeah, I don't know that memory
- 12:45Speaker 1: just came to me. Second time I met Steve Earl, however,
- 12:47Speaker 1: was backstage at Carnegie Hall and I was there for
- 12:50Speaker 1: David Byrne's birthday and he lost Steve Earl had lost
- 12:55Speaker 1: his mandolin and I found it for him and I
- 12:59Speaker 1: gave it to him and I made him smile, and
- 13:01Speaker 1: I didn't say anything. I wasn't like, hey man, big fan, nothing,
- 13:04Speaker 1: just you know, did the guy solid went on my way?
- 13:06Speaker 1: Those are my Steve Earl stories. But I love Steve Earl,
- 13:09Speaker 1: and you know, frankly, I don't know much about those
- 13:12Speaker 1: sort of lost prison guns n' roses years, but I'm
- 13:15Speaker 1: gonna get into it. All right, great email, appreciate it.
- 13:18Speaker 1: I'll shut up for a minute. Let's hear what you
- 13:19Speaker 1: guys have to say. Okay, this one comes from Sharon
- 13:23Speaker 1: rahoach raoachee.
- 13:25Speaker 2: Uh.
- 13:25Speaker 1: I'm not sure how to pronounce your last name, Sharon,
- 13:27Speaker 1: but I appreciate your email. Email says Hey Jake Terry Keith,
- 13:31Speaker 1: founding member of the Chicago Transit Authority aka Chicago groundbreaking
- 13:36Speaker 1: rock jazz fusion band from the early seventies still present.
- 13:40Speaker 1: Terry was suicidal on drugs and said if he didn't
- 13:42Speaker 1: get off the stuff it would kill him. And he
- 13:43Speaker 1: had a gun collection. In one day, while playing with
- 13:46Speaker 1: his pistol, supposedly unloaded, spun the barrel, put it. I'm
- 13:51Speaker 1: not gonna go on, but needless to say, looks like
- 13:53Speaker 1: there might be a Chicago episode coming your way soon.
- 13:56Speaker 1: Great suggestion. Appreciate that. Todd Heath writes, saying, Hey, if
- 13:59Speaker 1: you're going to consider making episodes on wrestlers, you should
- 14:03Speaker 1: do it on Chrispiny. He was a great wrestler who
- 14:05Speaker 1: also murdered his wife and son. Brutal, brutal. Yeah, perhaps
- 14:10Speaker 1: we will get into that dark dark. I know we
- 14:14Speaker 1: deal in the darkness, but today, you know what, It's
- 14:18Speaker 1: just I don't feel I don't feel the darkness. The
- 14:20Speaker 1: sun is shining, it's beautiful out. The darkness is hitting
- 14:23Speaker 1: me a little a little harder today for some reason.
- 14:26Speaker 1: Let's do some voicemails and text from you guys. How
- 14:28Speaker 1: about that? All right, Let's tell this voicemail from the five.
- 14:32Speaker 3: Four to H mister Brennan, how are you doing this morning?
- 14:35Speaker 2: It's five morning, born morning, editing work. Chefs wanted to
- 14:40Speaker 2: throw if I got their home again. Jack Dempsey, Jack Depsty,
- 14:44Speaker 2: Jack Dempsey and Jack Depsy. That's a good, good episode
- 14:49Speaker 2: episode all right?
- 14:53Speaker 1: Five four? Oh Jack Dempsey, I hear you. I hear
- 14:55Speaker 1: you loud and clear. We'll look into it. All right.
- 14:59Speaker 1: Let's check out this voy smell from the nine to
- 15:01Speaker 1: oh four?
- 15:02Speaker 2: Hey, Jake, what's um?
- 15:03Speaker 3: This is vary from the nine to four? He's kind
- 15:07Speaker 3: of a piece of shit, not kind of, But David
- 15:10Speaker 3: allen Coe, I'm sure not the first person who's brought
- 15:13Speaker 3: him up, but even up until here recently got into
- 15:16Speaker 3: a car crash down in Florida, like kills himselves. But yeah,
- 15:21Speaker 3: and would be interesting to hear your take on David
- 15:26Speaker 3: allen Coe and the many personalities and lives of the
- 15:30Speaker 3: looking forward to Scott Weiland and.
- 15:33Speaker 2: Yeah, the upcoming season.
- 15:35Speaker 3: Just listen to the after party, William F.
- 15:37Speaker 2: Burrows. That sh sounds gets to me.
- 15:39Speaker 3: Man's keep it up, no matter what you call it.
- 15:41Speaker 3: A disgrace is a disgrace. Rocket Roller.
- 15:45Speaker 1: Thanks dude, David allen Coe. You know this has been
- 15:48Speaker 1: requested since way way way, way way back, and uh,
- 15:52Speaker 1: I don't know. I have mixed feelings about it because
- 15:56Speaker 1: I don't even know how to talk about it. I
- 15:57Speaker 1: don't know much about David allen Coe, but I know
- 16:00Speaker 1: some of the stuff that he got up to, and
- 16:01Speaker 1: I know some of the things that he said and did,
- 16:04Speaker 1: and I don't really have a take yet, not to
- 16:07Speaker 1: say that I won't at some point. I appreciate you
- 16:10Speaker 1: bringing it up, and you're kind of motivating me to
- 16:13Speaker 1: look into this a little bit more and see if
- 16:14Speaker 1: I can figure something out. All right. Check out this
- 16:17Speaker 1: one from the two or three, And this herein lies
- 16:19Speaker 1: the point I was trying to make earlier about the
- 16:22Speaker 1: rewind episodes in the archive. We have checked this out.
- 16:25Speaker 1: This is from the two of three.
- 16:26Speaker 2: It is John from the two o three. How about
- 16:29Speaker 2: an episode Spade Coolie. He was a country music sensation
- 16:34Speaker 2: fiddle player, had his own big band and his own
- 16:37Speaker 2: television show. He beat his wife to death with his
- 16:41Speaker 2: own bare hands in front of his three children. He
- 16:45Speaker 2: even has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
- 16:48Speaker 1: Thanks man, So two o three. What I say about darkness, huh?
- 16:53Speaker 1: I can't escape it today. But listen, this is the
- 16:55Speaker 1: point I was making earlier. In that earlier block. We
- 16:58Speaker 1: have an episode on Spade Coolie from the first first
- 17:01Speaker 1: second season of Disgraceland. I believe us in the archive.
- 17:04Speaker 1: You can hear it now, and I will let you
- 17:06Speaker 1: know that after I wrote that episode, the darkness was
- 17:09Speaker 1: so so intense, I had to take like a two
- 17:11Speaker 1: to three week break from researching and writing. So check
- 17:14Speaker 1: that out. Six one seven nine oh six six six
- 17:17Speaker 1: three eight. Get at me, guys, let me know who
- 17:19Speaker 1: you want to hear me write about, talk about in
- 17:21Speaker 1: the new year. Get a lot planned for you. Got
- 17:24Speaker 1: a lot of texts here, haven't responded to text in
- 17:26Speaker 1: a while. Let's check these out. This one from the
- 17:27Speaker 1: six one two, Hey Jake, Hey, Steve Rayvaughan would be
- 17:31Speaker 1: a great listen. It was Steve Ravon's always a great
- 17:33Speaker 1: listen six one two. Come on, man, we'll get into
- 17:37Speaker 1: Stevie at some point. Six one seven rights in, Hey Jake,
- 17:40Speaker 1: it's Johnny Vinyl John McNeely. Been a little bit behind
- 17:42Speaker 1: on my Disgraceland episodes. Which one did you shout me
- 17:45Speaker 1: out on? I don't remember, Johnny, if you haven't check
- 17:50Speaker 1: it out. I'm reading Geddy Lee's in his chapter Getting
- 17:53Speaker 1: Lee's Book in his chapter on his parents surviving the
- 17:56Speaker 1: Holocaust was jaw dripping, so gritty, in detailed. Put it
- 17:59Speaker 1: in there because he said it's important to know the
- 18:02Speaker 1: stories behind what shapes a person, and in this case, uh,
- 18:05Speaker 1: the musician Johnny, You're so right, Gedty Lee is so right.
- 18:08Speaker 1: And I think that's the whole reason we're here, isn't it.
- 18:11Speaker 1: See what shape the musicians?
- 18:12Speaker 3: All right?
- 18:13Speaker 1: Nine one nine right saying, hey, Jake, some musicians stories
- 18:16Speaker 1: to tell, uh, maybe if you haven't told them already.
- 18:21Speaker 1: Dave from depeche Mode, Randy from Lamb of God, Shannon
- 18:24Speaker 1: from Blind Melon, Trent reznor Rick Rubin. Those are all
- 18:28Speaker 1: great and you're definitely getting into them at some point.
- 18:32Speaker 1: I would say, of the ones you mentioned there nine
- 18:35Speaker 1: to one nine, the depeche Mode and the Blind Melon
- 18:38Speaker 1: ones get suggested the most, so those will probably be
- 18:42Speaker 1: coming first. Six oh three, just writes in Sam Kinnison
- 18:45Speaker 1: and six oh three, I think you're right. I think
- 18:48Speaker 1: that's a great fucking idea. Paging Zeth Lundy, Hey, Jake
- 18:51Speaker 1: Kristen from the sixt' one to eight but formerly the
- 18:53Speaker 1: five seven three, listening to your latest bonus episode, wasn't
- 18:56Speaker 1: sure if you'd ever considered creating an episode on Dave Letterman,
- 19:00Speaker 1: who I haven't considered that, and I was big into
- 19:05Speaker 1: Letterman at the time of that scandal. I don't know.
- 19:09Speaker 1: I don't know how I would handle that one. I
- 19:11Speaker 1: don't know, I don't know. Uh, let's go to the
- 19:17Speaker 1: five one three, Hey, Jake, Becky here from the five
- 19:20Speaker 1: to one to three, listening today to movie recommendations for kids.
- 19:24Speaker 1: I myself am a gen X mother. My son is
- 19:27Speaker 1: thirty now. I couldn't wait for him to grow up
- 19:30Speaker 1: and like the same movies and music as me. And
- 19:32Speaker 1: it happened. What a cool feeling it was. And this
- 19:35Speaker 1: is in response to me asking you guys how to
- 19:39Speaker 1: sort of bring our kids along into some of the
- 19:41Speaker 1: more explicit content that we're into without shielding them. And
- 19:47Speaker 1: Becky's got some great recommendations here. A lot of them
- 19:49Speaker 1: are movie recommendations, and I think I'll get into those
- 19:52Speaker 1: in the rap party that I'm going to record tomorrow.
- 19:55Speaker 1: Six so four Wright saying hey, thanks for helping with
- 19:57Speaker 1: the dishes. Jakins sends a picture of him of doing
- 20:01Speaker 1: them dishes. You got it, man, You might want to
- 20:04Speaker 1: put on some pants. Looks like you're in a towel,
- 20:07Speaker 1: so that's good. Five oh five rights in, Hey, Jake,
- 20:10Speaker 1: my suggestion for an episode of Disgrace, and is the
- 20:12Speaker 1: artist Banksy? Aside from graffiti? Hey, this is the second
- 20:15Speaker 1: Banksy recommendation that I've received in the past couple of weeks.
- 20:19Speaker 1: I'm not going to read any further because I don't
- 20:20Speaker 1: want to repeat myself, but it sounds like we might
- 20:22Speaker 1: be onto a Banksy episode at some point. Massive attack.
- 20:26Speaker 1: What else we got here? Four two three rights in?
- 20:29Speaker 1: Is there anything podworthy about Marilyn Manson? He seems like
- 20:32Speaker 1: a creepy dude. Of course there is, and we're gonna
- 20:35Speaker 1: do that one this year. Just waiting waiting for the
- 20:37Speaker 1: dust to settle, as they say. Four one two e
- 20:39Speaker 1: LP Emerson Lake and Palmer, Really Emerson Lake and Palmer?
- 20:44Speaker 1: What I don't know? Six one seven nine oh six
- 20:47Speaker 1: six sixty three eight Keep the recommendations coming, guys. I'm
- 20:49Speaker 1: gonna take a quick break back and flash. All right,
- 21:05Speaker 1: we are back, and this is the recommendation's part, the
- 21:08Speaker 1: part of the show where we recommend the things that
- 21:10Speaker 1: are worth recommending, the recommendations part, guys. I don't know
- 21:13Speaker 1: if I mentioned this last time we talked on either
- 21:16Speaker 1: the after party or the rap Party. But I watched
- 21:19Speaker 1: a great Parker Posy movie and I think I mentioned it,
- 21:21Speaker 1: and it reminds it reminds me of what's coming up
- 21:24Speaker 1: in the feed here, Party Girl, great New York nineties movie.
- 21:29Speaker 1: It's filmed at the exact moment in history when I
- 21:33Speaker 1: started going to Manhattan with my band to play shows.
- 21:37Speaker 1: It's like nineteen ninety five, ninety six. It's just it
- 21:41Speaker 1: just looks and feels so great. It's the New York
- 21:46Speaker 1: that I first, like I said, started going to and
- 21:50Speaker 1: fell in love with. And I was lucky enough that
- 21:53Speaker 1: New York still had a lot of danger to it.
- 21:56Speaker 1: It was still a lot less dangerous than it was
- 21:59Speaker 1: ten years part, but it was a much different animal
- 22:02Speaker 1: than what it became in the two thousands and what
- 22:04Speaker 1: it is now. And it's all captured in that film
- 22:06Speaker 1: in a way that really really brings me back, and
- 22:10Speaker 1: it reminds me. You know, Madonna is one of the
- 22:13Speaker 1: great I know she's not from New York. I know
- 22:16Speaker 1: she's from Michigan, but she definitely her career started in
- 22:19Speaker 1: New York and she is a great New York character.
- 22:23Speaker 1: And I really tried to nail that in the Madonna episode.
- 22:26Speaker 1: And I remember when I wrote the episode, I specifically
- 22:29Speaker 1: wanted to spend a good amount of brain energy, and
- 22:33Speaker 1: I didn't really realize how much time it would end
- 22:35Speaker 1: up being in the episode on the song Borderline, which
- 22:39Speaker 1: if you followed me on Instagram, you know I'm obsessed
- 22:41Speaker 1: with that song, and I wrote at the time this
- 22:43Speaker 1: is what I wrote at the time about Madonna and Borderline.
- 22:48Speaker 1: Madonna immersed herself from the growing dance club scene of
- 22:51Speaker 1: the early eighties in Manhattan, and club culture, a culture
- 22:54Speaker 1: that celebrated and flaunted sex, was as big an influence
- 22:58Speaker 1: on Madonna as downtown. Her sexuality was hers to play with,
- 23:03Speaker 1: and she was unafraid to share it with the world.
- 23:05Speaker 1: All of this is on display in her first single
- 23:09Speaker 1: to hit the Billboard US Top ten, Borderline. It's hard
- 23:12Speaker 1: for me to explain the greatness and appeal of Madonna's Borderline.
- 23:17Speaker 1: The opening notes on the electric piano got me every
- 23:20Speaker 1: time I hear them. It's a simple, childlike sound and
- 23:23Speaker 1: melancholic melody that looks back to the seventies, and then
- 23:26Speaker 1: the beat comes in and all of a sudden you're
- 23:29Speaker 1: in a new decade, onto something fresh, fully committed to
- 23:33Speaker 1: the promise of the unknown. The feeling is similar to
- 23:36Speaker 1: the beginnings of any great relationship. You feel comfortable and safe,
- 23:40Speaker 1: while at the same time excited about where it's all going.
- 23:44Speaker 1: The single was Madonna's first big come on. Her flirtatious
- 23:48Speaker 1: glance across the bar, her nonchalant bump on the dance floor.
- 23:52Speaker 1: It was electric. The casual touch from her hand pushing it,
- 23:57Speaker 1: the whisper in your ear keep pushing it, and the
- 24:00Speaker 1: mischievous laugh. Heart melting, the smile, the pout, the abandon,
- 24:05Speaker 1: the control. A total turn on. Madonna had made a
- 24:10Speaker 1: pass at America, and America was smitten. I love that
- 24:15Speaker 1: fucking song. Can you tell? It's so good? It's so, so,
- 24:20Speaker 1: so so good. And I love this Madonna episode and
- 24:22Speaker 1: I hope you guys do as well. Check it out.
- 24:24Speaker 1: It's coming up in your feeds this Friday. Hit me
- 24:26Speaker 1: up six one seven, nine oh six sixty six three
- 24:29Speaker 1: eight let me know what you think about it. You
- 24:30Speaker 1: can also hit me on Instagram at disgrace lam pod,
- 24:33Speaker 1: Twitter x YouTube TikTok at disgracelam pod. I want to
- 24:37Speaker 1: read you guys, this dm I got on Instagram and
- 24:43Speaker 1: the listener asked that she not be mentioned by name,
- 24:46Speaker 1: and she sent in some pictures too. But we released
- 24:50Speaker 1: a Sharon Stone episode recently and in the bad Lands feed,
- 24:56Speaker 1: and that's what this is in relation too. But this
- 24:58Speaker 1: listener writes me a lot about the DISGRACEDND episodes as well,
- 25:02Speaker 1: and she's great, and I get why she doesn't want
- 25:06Speaker 1: her name mentioned. But I want to read this to
- 25:07Speaker 1: you anyways, and apologies. Now if you listen to the
- 25:09Speaker 1: Rap Party this week, you hear this there too, because
- 25:12Speaker 1: I'm gonna double dip and read it over there too
- 25:14Speaker 1: because the I'm just so jazzed by this message. Hey
- 25:17Speaker 1: j Cappy twenty twenty four, Well, I sometimes I feel
- 25:21Speaker 1: like you've read my diary when it comes to your shows,
- 25:24Speaker 1: my connections to Scorsese, byork Jane's addiction, we're all tangential,
- 25:30Speaker 1: but today you hit home, hit home, all caps. She
- 25:34Speaker 1: goes on to say, the summer I graduated from college,
- 25:37Speaker 1: I acted in my university's summer theater program. I met
- 25:41Speaker 1: an up and coming actress from Los Angeles and we
- 25:44Speaker 1: became fast friends. She encouraged me to move out to
- 25:47Speaker 1: La instead of New York City, which was my plan,
- 25:49Speaker 1: and I did just that, and she helped me out.
- 25:51Speaker 1: When I got there. Her career was taking off, and
- 25:54Speaker 1: she got me extra work on three of her films,
- 25:57Speaker 1: the first of which was Basic Instinct. If I have
- 26:00Speaker 1: an already guessed it was Sharon Stone. I was privy
- 26:02Speaker 1: to a lot of the goings on and know all
- 26:04Speaker 1: about the day she shot the interrogation scene. I sat
- 26:08Speaker 1: behind her at the premiere and heard her gasp when
- 26:10Speaker 1: she first saw it. The listener sends, in these pictures,
- 26:14Speaker 1: they're so great, I wish I could share them with you.
- 26:17Speaker 1: They're from nineteen ninety and their candids of her with
- 26:20Speaker 1: Sharon Stone in her kitchen, which, as you can imagine,
- 26:25Speaker 1: candids of Sharon Stone in nineteen ninety are pretty fucking compelling. Myself,
- 26:30Speaker 1: Sharon and my ex at a New Year's Eve party
- 26:32Speaker 1: in ninety two, and that year she helped me get
- 26:34Speaker 1: me a small role in Sliver that ended up on
- 26:37Speaker 1: the cutting room floor. Oh well, I'm sharing this with
- 26:39Speaker 1: you because I know you'll appreciate and you could share
- 26:41Speaker 1: on the show, but please don't use my name. You
- 26:43Speaker 1: got it. I just wanted to wanted to share that
- 26:46Speaker 1: because we tried really hard here at Graceland and bad Lands.
- 26:50Speaker 1: We're all the same crew to tow the line between,
- 26:54Speaker 1: you know, what we find in our research, what happened,
- 26:57Speaker 1: and how to turn that into something that's that's that
- 27:02Speaker 1: adheres to the truth of the story, but is also entertaining.
- 27:06Speaker 1: And when we hear from people who were there in
- 27:08Speaker 1: the moment and let us know that we're that we're
- 27:11Speaker 1: on the right track, it just it's really validating, and
- 27:15Speaker 1: I don't know, I felt like that would be a
- 27:17Speaker 1: good share with you guys. So so there you go.
- 27:20Speaker 1: Apologize for any If that's perceived as self aggrandizing or
- 27:24Speaker 1: anything like that, that's not the point. I just you know,
- 27:26Speaker 1: I'm like everyone, I get psyched by bold face names
- 27:28Speaker 1: and candid photos of Sharon Stone. Can't help me. I
