- 2:16it's another Saturday night a PM. And you know who it is.
- 2:21It's your SEC book gal girl, Patrese Crumble and we have another great author
- 2:28interview for you tonight. Well you know what I shouldn't say author, I
- 2:30should say authors. I have missus Cheryl Jackson and missus Lewars Wallace and they
- 2:38are a new book out called Mirrored Images. Y'all. This is poetry at
- 2:45its finest. So yeah, I know poetry month with last month, but
- 2:47you know what this right, here, y'all don't want to miss this book.
- 2:52So I'm bringing up my guests, Missus Wallace and Missus Jackson. Hey,
- 2:58ladies, Hi you potrees. How were you guys today? We're doing
- 3:06really good. So first, you know, you gotta tell us about yourselves.
- 3:10Okay. Um, we are pretty much a writing duo. I'm the
- 3:17older sister by fifteen months. My name is Cheryl, and my younger sister,
- 3:23which is Lauris, is been writing with me a lifetime. But we
- 3:30just published our first book in twenty nineteen, and we followed it up in
- 3:36twenty twenty with the current book that we're talking about today, which is me.
- 3:39We're images, okay, and so tell us a little bit about yourself,
- 3:46miss miss Wallace. Okay. Um, my name is Lauris Wallace,
- 3:52and like Chryls said, I'm the other half of sisters Rock and Rhyme and
- 4:00uh, we have been writing a lifetime, but we decided only decided to
- 4:09write these books. Well, poetry came later. I originally wanted to be
- 4:17the next Spike Lee and you know, write films and all this kind of
- 4:23stuff. And it wasn't until I got older when I discovered, you know,
- 4:30I think I liked poetry, okay, and no, you know poetry
- 4:35and Spike Lee. I could see that coming hand in hand. So I've
- 4:43read you said duel. Now I've read books by dual authors. How does
- 4:50that work? And oh yeah, I like the fact that Micheryl said she's
- 4:55fifteen months older. She made sure we knew that she was fifteen months So
- 5:01how I mean, how does that work? It really works well for us
- 5:10because we are extensions of each other, and we are two different people,
- 5:17but we have the same mind, the same thought process. The way we
- 5:23see each other is the way we see the world around us, and we
- 5:27love the world around us the way that our parents taught us and reared us
- 5:32to love each other. So if you there can never really be a competition
- 5:40because there's room here for everyone. I love that. I love that,
- 5:47And so writing writing a book together is if that person is the other half
- 5:57of yourself and the extension of yourself. You really have maybe different ways of
- 6:03saying the same thing, but you really are saying the same thing, so
- 6:09it's as if it was just really right. I love that. I love
- 6:14that I have two friends of mine that are authors like that in the like
- 6:19feed off of each other, and when you read the book, you think
- 6:21you're reading one person. And then sometimes I have to look back and like,
- 6:25hold up, I know this says r in or lysical from a shopping
- 6:30but why does this read like this's just one person? And I love that
- 6:34means that that's there, that's your genuine We'll see the thing is, um
- 6:39sure we you will be able to tell who's writing what, okay, because
- 6:46we may we may uh say the same thing, but we stay it differently.
- 6:54That's why we kind of piggyback off of uh each other the person uh
- 7:00title of our first book with different size of the same coin. Even though
- 7:04we are you know, one, we are different sides of each other.
- 7:11And we've always I've always felt like that that that Charlene and I is basically
- 7:15the same person. We just looked different. We look different and we talked
- 7:20different, like Charles my straight she's the straight man to my comedy. Yet
- 7:26you know, yeah, and uh so you believe you mean the writers are
- 7:30the readers will see that. You know, they'll be able to tell who's
- 7:34writing who. Okay, Yeah, you know I'm gonna look for that when
- 7:39I read the book. Yeah, you're I'm gonna seeing you an inbox.
- 7:43So this one is you, isn't it. You're gonna get it, Patrie.
- 7:54Because Lawrence is so informal. I'm a little bit more rigid and a
- 8:00little bit more formal. Okay, Lawrence is this very like Hagarl? Right?
- 8:11Okay, it's like like hello man. Yes, Carl is very much.
- 8:16She was the English literature major. Oh okay, there goes there.
- 8:22It is so, but I was a journalism major, which is crazy,
- 8:28um uh, because we don't we didn't have like Charl has always loved to
- 8:35read. This is the only time that I know that we really was in
- 8:39competition with one another is when she loved to read and I hated reading.
- 8:46Because when we were little, for some reason, we did everything together.
- 8:52So if charl was reading are you there? God It to me Margaret,
- 8:54I was reading are you there? God It to me Margaret. We were
- 8:58reading it at the same time. But the thing was she would always finish
- 9:03before me, and I hated that. I hate that because she was she's
- 9:09like a speed reader. Then yeah, and then she not only can she
- 9:15read fast, but she can comprehend and remember what she read. If I
- 9:20read fast, I can't tell you what. I just read it, but
- 9:24uh so I hated you know, I hated that because she was She's always
- 9:28been, you know, better at things than I was anyway. I mean,
- 9:33Sheryl was an athlete, she was almost homecoming queen. You know I
- 9:37was none of that. But you know I she was my hero. She
- 9:43was who I wanted. Yeah, I love the energy. I love y'all
- 9:54energy. Want to have a none that mom? Want? I have enough?
- 10:01Yeah, I got an eight year old. Let's let's go to the
- 10:03next thing to see. So you have a new book out that is called
- 10:11Marriage Images. Tell me a little bit about that, Um Patres. That
- 10:20is really um a sequel to our first book, which was different size of
- 10:26the same coin, different sizes of the same coint was a story very much
- 10:33about our family, and uh our mother was really really given certain focus um
- 10:46with that first book because we did special things for her in her memory of
- 10:54like with Negro Spirituals. Um Negro spirituals are the backdrop and they are the
- 11:01song. The Negro Spirituals are peppered throughout the book. So it's kind of
- 11:07a week in a nod to Edna May our mother and mirrored images is the
- 11:13second half of that story, which we do the same week, and not
- 11:16to our beloved patriarch, our father, who passed away during the rage of
- 11:26the ravagings of COVID nineteen in March of twenty twenty. We were locked down
- 11:33in the house during COVID nineteen with each other, and all we had was
- 11:41our journals, writing and TV and so a lot of that. It's a
- 11:48sadder I think it's a sadder book because there was so much just sickness.
- 11:56And you remember COVID nineteen, social justice and social unrust was happening, and
- 12:03you had the killing of George Floyd and so many other black people that took
- 12:11center stage. And we were watching TV all the time, Karen, for
- 12:13our patriarch who was ill and dying of bone cancer. Prosy cancer were spread
- 12:20to his bones. So those writings are beautiful, but they are a lot
- 12:26sadder And I love the book though, because we're adults. We are adults,
- 12:31mature women of a certain age. We you know, had our children,
- 12:35were not these young girls, young women asking these questions. We know
- 12:41who we are. All of the questions have been answered, and we are
- 12:46writing very much in real time in our adults, mature women voices. And
- 12:52that's what I love about mirrored images. Oh y'all kind of here want to
- 12:58start. I'm not happy with them to a book to sign and start this
- 13:01because first of all, you have my condolences, but the fact that you
- 13:05were able to write through your pain, that's just wow. We'll see patry.
- 13:13That's the thing. That's the difference. Why I'm telling you'll be able
- 13:15to tell the difference because charl and I had different relationships with our with with
- 13:20our dad. I would never refer to my dad as my beloved father.
- 13:26I mean, you know, my beloved patriarch. You know I love my
- 13:30dad, but you know, he and I had a very complicated relationship.
- 13:33And uh, you know, Scharl was my dad's favorite. He had four
- 13:39children, but Sharl wasn't his favorite. And you know, I was not
- 13:46the favorite at all, didn't come close to be in the favorite. And
- 13:52so that's why I'm saying, you're gonna be able to tell that it's not
- 13:56all sad. Um. The the thing I like about this book is is
- 14:03she's right. We're writing about current events that we as we are seeing them
- 14:09unfold on our television, hearing it and you know, our sitting room watching
- 14:15it on the TV. And like she said, it's more current. And
- 14:22the reason why we kept keep saying that it's current is because when we wrote
- 14:28Mirrored I'm sorry, Different Sizes of the Same Coin, these poems is a
- 14:33collection of poems from when we were young girls trying to figure it out up
- 14:39until we actually wrote the book. So if you read Different Sizes the Same
- 14:46Coin, it's it's us trying to figure it out, trying to see,
- 14:50you know, like why these things are happening to us, you know,
- 14:52trying to understand relationships, you know, and trying to understand ourselves right right,
- 15:00so that you know, uh, that's what Different Sides of the Same
- 15:03Coin is. It is us trying to figure it out, whereas in Mirrored
- 15:09Images it's our voices now. And you can tell the difference between the two
- 15:16books, so you can tell the maturity of the book. Yeah, exactly
- 15:20right. But we're gonna take us a little break and then I'm gonna come
- 15:24to find out and said, you know, I'm gonna ask what was the
- 15:26most challenging part about writing in verse? Because you know, some people that
- 15:30stay away from poetry and it's like, no that's too hard. So y'all
- 15:33gonna tell me how y'all master that, We'll be right back. Okay,
- 15:37Okay, you need to get your book reviews or do you want a little
- 15:43bit more exposure for your new book. Check us out at Www've got sc
- 15:50book gallant friends dot com or email us at SC book Gallant Friends at Team
- 16:00l dot com. We have packages for all authors. Contact us. We're
- 16:06ready to read your new book as I tell you. Hey, so we're
- 16:14back everyone with Missus Jackson and Missus Wallace, the authors of a Married Image.
- 16:21So my question is a lot of authors stare away from writing inverse or
- 16:27writing poetry. What brings poetry to you? Why not write fiction? And
- 16:37our science fiction? What made poetry you? Well, it made sense for
- 16:45us because we are naturally journalists. Okay, so we have a whole lifetime
- 16:52and it is Lawrence just Um kind of relaid our first book, different size
- 17:00of the same coin. Were internal entries that went back twenty years of writing.
- 17:10I wanted to say, Patrese, my sister is so sweet and she
- 17:14always gives me, you know, my price, But I have to emvow
- 17:21and take off my hat and give her hers because Laura's is a natural writer.
- 17:30I am not a natural writer. I'm a technical writer. And I'm
- 17:36a gifted writer because all gifts come from God, so I recognize that part
- 17:41of it. But she is natural. And what I mean by that,
- 17:47Patrese, is that it comes just you know, she she is a writer's
- 17:56writer. She has to have amused, she has to to have be influenced,
- 18:02which means she's hell trying to h produce a book with. But because
- 18:07the gift is so extensive, you kind of swallow hard because you want that
- 18:15writing. You want to be you want to be as interwoven with that writing
- 18:22as a second set of clothes, so you you will tolerate all of her
- 18:29quirks and her different like writing things. And she has all these clicks,
- 18:33and you know she's she's a bit eccentric in that you know, she can't
- 18:38produce something on the fly. Like if you told me, okay, Siryl,
- 18:41this is your subject matter right a poem, I would be able to
- 18:45do it. Lawrence would not be able to do it because she is not
- 18:48quick with it like that marmaid. Yes, she has to be inspired.
- 18:55She can't fire by So that was the hardest part, But why do we
- 19:00write in verse? Verse is very natural to us because it is a very
- 19:04very short way of saying what you want to say, sometimes in a rhythm
- 19:14or in metaphor, or in you know, whatever, however you want it
- 19:22to use. Coded language. Poetry gives you that format where you can say
- 19:27it however you want to say it in almost like a short a very very
- 19:36short way of saying something. And that's why we love that versus fiction.
- 19:41Now, the downside of that is is Lawrence and I were actually writing a
- 19:48fictional novel we're gonna release that before we were releasing this third book that we're
- 19:56writing, but got too heavy for us. We were too emotionally just you
- 20:03know, with the you know, coming off of the COVID nineteen and you
- 20:08know, all of this other stuff that's going on in the world, our
- 20:12our dad pathway, we had all these other things intersecting at one time.
- 20:21So we ended up having to push that book to the side because we kind
- 20:26of just didn't want to unpack all of our other issues of losing a parent.
- 20:33You know, our family structure shifted, our family dynamics changed, and
- 20:41that's too heavy for us. So we wanted to just go dive into dive
- 20:49meant to something that could help do the next thing. And poetry is so
- 20:53natural for us. We just opted to do here now snapshot of life in
- 21:00poetry form. And so that's our third book that it's supposed to be coming
- 21:06out, Patrese in the Fall. But because my sister in the Fall,
- 21:12right, But because my sister is such a a temperamental writer and she's challenged,
- 21:22I have to give her. Oh now, I have to jump in
- 21:27here. I'm not a temperamental writer, Patrese. It's the thing. The
- 21:33difference between one of the big differences between Cheryl and I when we write is
- 21:37that Chryl can say, Okay, today I'm going to sit down and I'm
- 21:41gonna write five points, and she will do it. Patrese, I can't
- 21:48do that. I have to be inspired. I have to. I call
- 21:52it a click. I have to. I have to, you know,
- 21:55hear the click, and and and something has to grab me, you know,
- 22:00and and and and then I'm able to write. If you know,
- 22:06if I'm too distracted, too many different things going on, or you know,
- 22:10just nothing is inspiring me, then uh, you know, I can't
- 22:15write. And she she right, now I do have some really weird things
- 22:21like you know, for me to in order for me to write, I
- 22:23have to have a blue pen. It has to be a big blue pen
- 22:26with the cap on it. I cannot write without the cap because see the
- 22:32pen is not balanced. To me. Then that I was just about to
- 22:37ask you guys, what are your odd writing habits? So we just do
- 22:41one of them. That's what. I have to have a blue pen and
- 22:45it had and and I have to have uh you know. Um, the
- 22:52paper has to be right and the pen has to be right. If it's
- 22:56not, it just throws me completely off. I can't. I can't.
- 22:59Oh wow, yeah, so I got missus Wallace's audwriting habits, Cheryl.
- 23:07Do you have any addwriting habits? No? Um, I tend to and
- 23:15I she's taught me patience, which is why I love my sister. Because
- 23:18she's taught me to just trust her and because she is such a beautiful and
- 23:26disciplined and authentic and natural writer. It's worth the weight. It's worth all
- 23:32of the hair pulling is that I'm having waiting on her to produce. And
- 23:38she, I mean she took me in that literally patrised this woman. She
- 23:42would worry ourselves to death. She you know, instead of believing that I
- 23:47got it, you know, and you know, I admit that I do
- 23:52a lot of crazy things. Like when my sister got married, she wanted
- 23:57me to do a point for her and now keeping man, Patrice, we
- 24:02had known about this weathering for at least two three years that well, at
- 24:06least two years that she was getting married, okay, and she wanted me
- 24:11to do this poem. And I was like, oh, I got time.
- 24:15I got time. I got time. I looked up. It was
- 24:18January. I got tame, I got time. So you know, I'm
- 24:25seeing my sister. One day she comes and she comes home to the apartment
- 24:29and Patricia has all of these dark circles under her eyes, and she just
- 24:33looks so bad. I said, girl, what is wrong? And she's
- 24:37like, you know, oh, all this stuff. You know, I'll
- 24:41just do all this. And then, oh, by the way, did
- 24:44you write the poem? Oh? I said, girl, I got it.
- 24:48I got the poem, you know, I said. I didn't write
- 24:52it out of something here, girl, It wasn't up here. I hadn't
- 24:53had a point. So wait, let me tell do you know when I
- 24:56got the point? When I was. I was laying in the bed and
- 25:03it was like two days before Cheryl's wedding. But all the time I'm telling
- 25:07how I got it. I got it. It was two days before her
- 25:11wedding. It was like three o'clock in the morning and bam, I mean
- 25:14patrise, it hit me just like that. I got up. I started
- 25:18writing. I started writing, and she said, laws you know, she
- 25:22was held a little dark circle. I said, yes, girl, I
- 25:26told you I had the book and I read the Poor Times. She was
- 25:32like, oh, Lauras, that's the most little oh oh yeah, but
- 25:37you see that's what I'm saying. I could be laying in bed and then
- 25:41hit me like that. I'm like, uh, I get up, like
- 25:44believe it or not. Last night it happened to me. It was like
- 25:47round two thirty, and I was like, you know, I was thinking
- 25:49to myself though, before I went to bed, I said, man,
- 25:52I got to get to writing. Lord, you gotta help me, you
- 25:55know, get writing, because sure I want to get this book out.
- 25:57Came to me like well, I went to sleep and I woke up and
- 26:03all of the stuff. I had the first couple of lines like there it
- 26:07is, and once I get the first couple of lines, I'm gone.
- 26:11So what do you ladies do when you're not writing? I'm an avid reader.
- 26:19I love to read tree So I'm either reading, I have something that
- 26:23i'm reading, or i am exercising. I'm really into physical fitness. Okay,
- 26:30but you know what, I love movies and music. And you know,
- 26:33I'm a single mom, so I'm a you know, that's what I
- 26:37do with my spare time. I'm a different size of the same coin.
- 26:45So so what are you listening to? This? Wallace? If I was
- 26:49to bring up your phone and go on YouTube, what would be your girl?
- 26:56Oh mind? You would get uh, all of the all the stuff
- 27:03from the eighties. I'm an eighties girl, so girl, you would get.
- 27:07And I'm a major Stevie Wonder fan, so you would get all of
- 27:11Stevie Wonder. You get the gap Us and the fingers Snappers, the gap
- 27:15Bad would get Zach, you would get a little bird Sy. You would
- 27:22get uh. And then you know, I'm ashamed to say it, but
- 27:26we grew up listening to the blues because my dad was a big blues fan.
- 27:32I didn't get a you know, I didn't really appreciate the blues.
- 27:34I liked it, but I didn't appreciate the blues until I got older.
- 27:40And so you're gonna see here a lot of blues on my on my I
- 27:45keep telling my sister, I said, girl, you better get with this
- 27:48music thing I got on you know, my Amazon music. I got it
- 27:52all on them. I'm girl, no butter word right now. Better need
- 27:59a big little yes girl. What or you read? If I go on
- 28:07your show and I pull out a book, what would that book be?
- 28:11Oh? Wow, uh gosh, I have so many right now. I
- 28:17just finish. I love romances. So I'm in my little uh romance novel
- 28:26uh john um and I am at. My sister loves Jane Austin, So
- 28:41I'm gonna read Mansfield part because she keeps talking about Jane Austin and all of
- 28:45these were you know, uh, we've been watching the Netflix with Seanda Rhymes
- 28:52and the Queen Charlotte Sira on Netflix. So right now I'm gonna jump into
- 28:59Jane Man's feel a period romance, Okay, And that's that's That's what I'm
- 29:04gonna read that book. That's what That's one of my favorite Jane Austen stories.
- 29:11So I read that every year. I try to read that every year
- 29:14because I love that that book. I'm right the scene now. I really
- 29:17don't read Jane Austin, but I think that I might have to try.
- 29:19Yeah, I love it. If you like and Queen Charlotte and all that,
- 29:26you're gonna love Jane Austen. All right, so I'm gonna take a
- 29:30walk on the wild side and try to But before we leave, tell your
