Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: Helloly Progs, Welcome back to our cast interview series. We're
- 0:04Speaker 1: getting into the meat and potatoes of these cast interviews. Now.
- 0:08Speaker 1: We've had all the lovely carrots because I'm apparently going
- 0:12Speaker 1: to continue this metaphor, We've had the delicious gravy, and
- 0:15Speaker 1: we've had the lovely pie crust. Other cast members can
- 0:18Speaker 1: assign themselves to those various roles, but now we've made
- 0:22Speaker 1: it to the meat and potatoes of the cast. Over
- 0:25Speaker 1: the next three months, it's going to be this interview
- 0:28Speaker 1: with Audra, then an interview with Jason, and then finally
- 0:32Speaker 1: apparently me. But this month is all about Audra and
- 0:37Speaker 1: it was lovely to sit down and chat with her.
- 0:39Speaker 1: We do it about bullshit every single day, but it
- 0:43Speaker 1: was nice to have this structured interview where hopefully you'll
- 0:46Speaker 1: learn a lot more about Audra, the person behind the
- 0:50Speaker 1: team captain on gate Leapers. We've both been extremely busy
- 0:55Speaker 1: recently diving into local live comedy by taking classes and
- 1:00Speaker 1: putting on shows, so a weekend morning wasn't really an
- 1:03Speaker 1: option for us in terms of a recording time. We
- 1:06Speaker 1: had to kind of slide it into the working week
- 1:09Speaker 1: after a couple of busy days so we tried to
- 1:12Speaker 1: create a relaxing vibe and in our heads we kept
- 1:15Speaker 1: telling ourselves before the conversation, this is a week end morning.
- 1:20Speaker 1: Remember we're doing this over coffee. Instead it was over
- 1:25Speaker 1: energy drinks, while neither of us had much energy, but
- 1:28Speaker 1: hopefully that reflects a weekend, you know. Just before we
- 1:32Speaker 1: get into the interview, I'd like to thank everyone who
- 1:35Speaker 1: joined us for the live stream recently our Pokemon episode
- 1:39Speaker 1: that we did live via YouTube and riverside. It was
- 1:43Speaker 1: a great test and first step into streaming, and hopefully
- 1:46Speaker 1: we'll be doing some more. I'd kind of like to
- 1:49Speaker 1: do about four a year. That would be nice, wouldn't it?
- 1:51Speaker 1: Maybe one a quarter that seems about the right amount.
- 1:55Speaker 1: So send us an email Gateleapers at gmail dot com
- 1:58Speaker 1: with ideas for future topics for live shows. Are there
- 2:01Speaker 1: any of the big fandoms from our first few seasons
- 2:05Speaker 1: that we should revisit in live show form? Let us
- 2:08Speaker 1: know Gateleapers at gmail dot com, or shoot as a
- 2:11Speaker 1: DM on Instagram at gate Leaper's pod or threads we
- 2:16Speaker 1: thread now because Twitter is dead. But yeah, it was
- 2:20Speaker 1: amazing to have viewers listeners vote in who one round
- 2:25Speaker 1: two of that episode, which if you miss the live stream,
- 2:29Speaker 1: next week's episode will be the audio version of that.
- 2:33Speaker 1: It won't have everything in that we did. You'll have
- 2:35Speaker 1: to join us live to see absolutely everything. It'll be
- 2:39Speaker 1: an edited down version, as gateleapers usually is. And not
- 2:42Speaker 1: only that, October is a three episode release month, so
- 2:46Speaker 1: this after the Pokemon episode, there's still two more episodes
- 2:49Speaker 1: to enjoy next month as we head into spooky season.
- 2:52Speaker 1: But that is not now. Now is Audra's cast interview
- 2:56Speaker 1: her life through fandom. So it's enough waffle from me.
- 3:00Speaker 1: Let's just play the sting and get right to it. Hey, Hi, Hi,
- 3:09Speaker 1: this we're here. This is us.
- 3:11Speaker 2: It is it's us, just just the two of us
- 3:15Speaker 2: at six pm, Just.
- 3:16Speaker 1: The two of us at six pm. Yeah, this is
- 3:20Speaker 1: This is a different one, obviously, I mean number one
- 3:24Speaker 1: for pretty much everyone else's cast interviews. I didn't already
- 3:27Speaker 1: know all the answers. Good. So while hopefully we'll make
- 3:30Speaker 1: this interesting for listeners, this one's gonna be quite boring.
- 3:37Speaker 2: I wish I could say I threw in some curveballs,
- 3:39Speaker 2: but I absolutely didn't. I absolutely did not. I think
- 3:46Speaker 2: every single thing that I mentioned today you will have
- 3:50Speaker 2: heard about. But that's fine because the listeners might not have.
- 3:54Speaker 1: Yeah, that's that is the purpose of this. The first
- 3:57Speaker 1: cast interview we've recorded in a little bit. But it's
- 4:01Speaker 1: nice to be in these final three of the year.
- 4:05Speaker 1: The UDRA interview happening right now, the Jason interview, which
- 4:10Speaker 1: I'm sure will follow, and then there's been some rumor
- 4:13Speaker 1: of me being interviewed, but I don't know how I
- 4:16Speaker 1: feel about that.
- 4:18Speaker 2: We'll see how we feel. I would love to hear
- 4:21Speaker 2: an interview of you answering all of these questions, but
- 4:25Speaker 2: I'm not going to force you.
- 4:27Speaker 1: Yeah someone will, though.
- 4:29Speaker 2: Someone probably will, but it's not gonna be me.
- 4:34Speaker 1: And this is why I love you. Oh, I love
- 4:38Speaker 1: you too. So I think with the other cast interviews
- 4:40Speaker 1: there was this very cozy vibe to them. I think
- 4:44Speaker 1: we recorded almost all of them on weekend mornings of
- 4:48Speaker 1: a coffee It felt like friends meeting up for a
- 4:51Speaker 1: chat at a coffee house, but a very structured set
- 4:55Speaker 1: of questions that must be the same every time. This
- 4:59Speaker 1: feels different, this feels weird. I mean, we're drinking what's
- 5:02Speaker 1: it called Arizona iced tea?
- 5:04Speaker 2: Yes, so it is a tea beverage.
- 5:06Speaker 1: So it's a tea beverage. But it's at six pm
- 5:09Speaker 1: m hm, after two busy days.
- 5:12Speaker 2: Yes, I have put on a huge hoodie and sweatpants,
- 5:17Speaker 2: so I'm in the cozy vibe.
- 5:19Speaker 1: Okay, good. Well, yeah, I mean that's that's great that
- 5:22Speaker 1: you are the person being interviewed. I feel that means
- 5:24Speaker 1: you'll produce the right level of answers, the right tone,
- 5:31Speaker 1: right tone, the right vibe.
- 5:33Speaker 2: I want it to be like a hug for the
- 5:34Speaker 2: podcast listener.
- 5:36Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, so that's what these questions are, a big hug.
- 5:40Speaker 2: Mm hmm.
- 5:41Speaker 1: So yeah, Audrey, You've been the person who's appeared on
- 5:43Speaker 1: the most episodes of gate Leapers, so it's possible that
- 5:49Speaker 1: out of all of the cast members, you're the person
- 5:52Speaker 1: that people might know the most.
- 5:54Speaker 2: Would you say, I hadn't thought about that, but absolutely,
- 6:00Speaker 2: because other than me, it would be.
- 6:02Speaker 1: You your cruse.
- 6:07Speaker 2: I was going to say that you hide behind copy yep.
- 6:13Speaker 2: So yeah, I will be probably the person that people
- 6:16Speaker 2: know the most. Incredible. I hope that this is a
- 6:20Speaker 2: wonderful interview and you enjoy hearing little pockets of things
- 6:23Speaker 2: you may not know.
- 6:25Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, I mean the main features, the main highlights
- 6:28Speaker 1: that you've gotten in over the months and years of
- 6:32Speaker 1: doing gate Leapers, your sort of early band media media
- 6:36Speaker 1: that you weren't allowed to has been a regular sort
- 6:40Speaker 1: of recurring beats and joke.
- 6:42Speaker 2: Oh yes, my family was quite religious throughout my entire youth,
- 6:49Speaker 2: and it felt like the whole church had these rules
- 6:53Speaker 2: about what everybody could and could not watch, and all
- 6:57Speaker 2: the other parents knew that it was a joke.
- 7:00Speaker 1: Except for mine. No, I get that. I relate to that.
- 7:04Speaker 2: It's like, oh, they can't read Harry Potter, and so
- 7:06Speaker 2: my friends from the church would all be like, oh,
- 7:10Speaker 2: I'm reading Harry Potter, and my parents just look at
- 7:13Speaker 2: me sternly.
- 7:15Speaker 1: But they weren't actually enforcing it, Like, no, not at all.
- 7:21Speaker 2: I was very much enforced on these types of things
- 7:25Speaker 2: that I could and could not consume in a way
- 7:28Speaker 2: that the religious families around me had no interest in doing.
- 7:35Speaker 1: Yeah. Yeah, we'll see how many times that comes up
- 7:38Speaker 1: throughout throughout this and how it's affected your media consumptions
- 7:42Speaker 1: throughout your life.
- 7:44Speaker 2: I'm I think there are some things that will be
- 7:50Speaker 2: quite indicative of Yeah, of that type of person. Absolutely, absolutely.
- 7:56Speaker 1: Well, let's start things off with that's your that time
- 8:01Speaker 1: where you were a child living under such strict media rules.
- 8:07Speaker 1: The same question I've asked everyone this year, what was
- 8:10Speaker 1: the first pop culture media you were obsessed with? What
- 8:13Speaker 1: was your earliest media obsession.
- 8:16Speaker 2: I have two main ones, lovely stuff that I could
- 8:20Speaker 2: think of as like huge. One I was quite young.
- 8:27Speaker 2: The movie Cutthroat Island. Okay, I watched this so many times.
- 8:33Speaker 2: We wore out the TV, the VHS, Yes of it.
- 8:37Speaker 2: My family got a ancient TV and VHS player to
- 8:45Speaker 2: put in my room. Like it couldn't always play color, Okay,
- 8:51Speaker 2: sometimes it could.
- 8:53Speaker 1: Oh right, So it was like broken, faulty, yeah.
- 8:58Speaker 2: Like heavy as all get out, ancient. But I had
- 9:01Speaker 2: watched this movie so many times I could see the
- 9:03Speaker 2: color even if even if it wasn't there, I could
- 9:07Speaker 2: see it. It is if you do not know the
- 9:12Speaker 2: premise of this film. Geena Davis is a pirate. Yes,
- 9:16Speaker 2: there are four brother three brothers, her uncles, her father
- 9:19Speaker 2: and their and her uncles who have treasure maps and
- 9:23Speaker 2: you have to put them together to find this huge treasure.
- 9:26Speaker 2: And her dad died and left her his part of
- 9:29Speaker 2: the map. But her evil uncle is coming. Oh no,
- 9:34Speaker 2: and he he's just called Dog. It's like if you
- 9:39Speaker 2: look at the reviews, it is objectively a terrible movie.
- 9:44Speaker 2: It potentially single handedly temporarily disrailed, derailed Geena Davis's career
- 9:52Speaker 2: is so poorly received.
- 9:53Speaker 1: Kind of famous box office flop.
- 9:55Speaker 2: I think, oh, yes, I was obsessed.
- 10:00Speaker 1: Yeah, you with the tal Get demographic.
- 10:01Speaker 2: Absolutely young girls who did not know they were bisexual.
- 10:06Speaker 2: This was really important. That one was huge for me.
- 10:10Speaker 1: So how old were you when that obsession was happening.
- 10:15Speaker 1: I don't remember ages.
- 10:20Speaker 2: I don't know how to place myself whenever I feel
- 10:22Speaker 2: really young, I'm like six years old.
- 10:25Speaker 1: So you're like, that must have happened when I.
- 10:27Speaker 2: Was six, So I'm going to say like six to twelve, okay, okay,
- 10:31Speaker 2: off and on. I was just obsessed with Cutthroat Island.
- 10:35Speaker 2: And then we get into the like twelveish region and
- 10:41Speaker 2: I found the book series Gregor The Overlander.
- 10:45Speaker 1: Okay.
- 10:46Speaker 2: I up until this point I kind of hated reading. Well, okay, okay,
- 10:51Speaker 2: I thought you were quite an avid reader as a child.
- 10:53Speaker 2: I could read, yes, I could read, yes, but I
- 10:59Speaker 2: didn't do it like a ton just because there was
- 11:03Speaker 2: homework in like it was like felt like homework because
- 11:07Speaker 2: I would read slower than the other kids. When I
- 11:09Speaker 2: was asked to like write summaries of things, I couldn't
- 11:12Speaker 2: do it. Like I couldn't manage to do that. So
- 11:15Speaker 2: there was a timeframe in there where reading was homework. Yeah,
- 11:20Speaker 2: I get that, And so like a proper it was
- 11:25Speaker 2: either homework or it was showing off right that.
- 11:29Speaker 1: The only two things something to benefit the mind can
- 11:32Speaker 1: possibly be. Yeah.
- 11:37Speaker 2: Yeah, but I found Gregor the Overlander. It was a
- 11:41Speaker 2: book by Susanne Collins, okay of Hunger Games fan Yeah, yeah.
- 11:46Speaker 2: Hunger Games was the series she wrote after she wrote
- 11:49Speaker 2: Gregor the Overlander. I was a Suzanne Collins fan the
- 11:54Speaker 2: first I did it for no into her first album,
- 11:58Speaker 2: I was. I was there from the beginning. But a
- 12:02Speaker 2: boys little sister falls down the like vent in their
- 12:05Speaker 2: living room and turns out there's a whole world down there. Okay, yeah,
- 12:10Speaker 2: something about the Earl of Sandwich took them all down there.
- 12:12Speaker 1: I don't understand that sounds fun. It is really fun.
- 12:15Speaker 2: There's bats so big you can ride on them, like
- 12:18Speaker 2: around cockroaches the size of ponies, so.
- 12:23Speaker 1: That you pull you all the size of cockroaches.
- 12:27Speaker 2: Honestly, there might be but it was just this really fun,
- 12:33Speaker 2: magical world. It's the first book I remember properly losing sleep.
- 12:41Speaker 1: And food over sure.
- 12:43Speaker 2: Yeah, Like I would just sit there on our sofa
- 12:47Speaker 2: for like six or seven hours straight. Because these were
- 12:53Speaker 2: these were young adult children's books. It just took me
- 12:56Speaker 2: that long to read.
- 12:58Speaker 1: Yeah, as we've established.
- 13:00Speaker 2: As we've established, so I would like just be like
- 13:03Speaker 2: going through and be like, God, why do I feel
- 13:06Speaker 2: like I'm in a puke? Oh wait, I haven't eaten
- 13:09Speaker 2: anything today.
- 13:10Speaker 1: Yeah, reading Gregor the Overland. I've just been reading reading
- 13:13Speaker 1: Gregor the Overlander.
- 13:14Speaker 2: I should probably have a snack. So that was something
- 13:19Speaker 2: I absolutely loved and it kind of opened up Oh. Yes,
- 13:22Speaker 2: reading can be a joyous world. It doesn't have to
- 13:25Speaker 2: be showing off, yeah, or homework.
- 13:29Speaker 1: It doesn't have to be either of those two things.
- 13:31Speaker 1: It can just be an enjoyable pastime.
- 13:34Speaker 2: Yes, and that stuck with me. I just love reading now.
- 13:40Speaker 2: Thank you, Suzanne Collins.
- 13:41Speaker 1: Yeah, thank you, Suzanne Collins. Not for the reason you think.
- 13:44Speaker 2: Not for the reason you'd think of the series. Yeah,
- 13:47Speaker 2: I was actually pretty late on the Hunger Games train.
- 13:50Speaker 1: But yeah, fair enough. You didn't want what interested in
- 13:53Speaker 1: the follow up you with the stuff.
- 13:54Speaker 2: No, it's like I'll reread this one.
- 13:56Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 13:57Speaker 2: Oh she's come out with new books, like I guess
- 13:59Speaker 2: I'll get to.
- 14:01Speaker 1: Oh lovely answer. Yeah, I knew about cut Through Island
- 14:06Speaker 1: for sure.
- 14:07Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 14:08Speaker 1: I don't remember you mentioning Gregor the Overlander before, so
- 14:11Speaker 1: there's a little surprise. Yeah. Nice score already already in
- 14:17Speaker 1: question one.
- 14:18Speaker 2: That's my quota.
- 14:20Speaker 1: Okay, moving on to the next question, thinking more about
- 14:23Speaker 1: community now, connecting fandoms with other people, with friends, with peers.
- 14:30Speaker 1: What was the first fandom you remember being a part of,
- 14:33Speaker 1: like making connections with other people through fandom.
- 14:36Speaker 2: This Well, I don't think this will ruffle feathers amongst
- 14:40Speaker 2: anyone who is listening to this, but amongst the wider world,
- 14:43Speaker 2: I'm gonna call Christianity the first fandom that I was.
- 14:47Speaker 1: Like really big into. Okay, yeah, fair enough. I can
- 14:51Speaker 1: see how it would ruffle some feathers. I also think
- 14:55Speaker 1: it's fair to say that some aspects of sort of
- 15:01Speaker 1: modern m M contemporary Christianity have a lot in common
- 15:06Speaker 1: with fandoms because they're both very entrenched in capitalism. So
- 15:10Speaker 1: there's a lot of crossover.
- 15:12Speaker 2: Yeah, Like, there's a lot of crossover there's like we
- 15:16Speaker 2: get together on these specific days and we talk about
- 15:19Speaker 2: this thing that we all have a special interest in.
- 15:22Speaker 1: Yeah, and it's a book at that, it's.
- 15:24Speaker 2: A book at that. There's many movies plays.
- 15:28Speaker 1: You're thinking about the veggietails movies what we talk ABU.
- 15:30Speaker 2: Absolutely absolutely, Oh my god, the veggietails content I have
- 15:35Speaker 2: consumed so much. They had video games, like computer PC games.
- 15:41Speaker 1: Through the Veggie Boys.
- 15:42Speaker 2: Yeah, the vegimin the Vegimen they had they had computer
- 15:46Speaker 2: games and I played them.
- 15:47Speaker 1: Oh my god, Veggietails, gate Leapers when.
- 15:51Speaker 2: Literally whenever you feel like breaking that happen.
- 15:54Speaker 1: You Okay, peek behind the screen of gate Leapers. You
- 15:58Speaker 1: have mentioned, oh, can we do Christianity at some point?
- 16:01Speaker 1: That's like a fandom. Now that you've you've gotten the
- 16:05Speaker 1: joke in in uh thank you in your heads of
- 16:07Speaker 1: you very good, very good, very droll, thank you. I've
- 16:12Speaker 1: said no because it feels a little bit disrespectful. I
- 16:15Speaker 1: think like faith is faith, yeah, and I sort of
- 16:19Speaker 1: don't want to that. There's so much fun to be
- 16:21Speaker 1: had with so many of the fandoms. However, how vegi
- 16:24Speaker 1: details could be the root.
- 16:26Speaker 2: In Veggie Tails or like if you there wasn't enough content,
- 16:30Speaker 2: one could expand it to the like Christian children's programming universe.
- 16:37Speaker 2: Sure yes, Bible Man.
- 16:40Speaker 1: Yeah, but Bible man McGee and me McGee and maybe
- 16:43Speaker 1: these are meeting things to so many Americans.
- 16:46Speaker 2: Whoever the fuck that donut guy was?
- 16:49Speaker 1: Okay, we did. We did get the donut guy because I.
- 16:52Speaker 2: Just remember talking donut and a man who looked like
- 16:55Speaker 2: Wa Luigi. Yeah.
- 16:57Speaker 1: I think he dressed in purple overall.
- 17:00Speaker 2: So yeah, fair up. But you could expand it. So
- 17:05Speaker 2: there is a lot of content. I do feel pretty
- 17:07Speaker 2: justified in calling this my first fandom. There was community, Yes,
- 17:12Speaker 2: that's the key pot, right, I had. I made a
- 17:14Speaker 2: lot of my friends through that. We would get together
- 17:17Speaker 2: and do Bible studies, so we would like get together
- 17:20Speaker 2: and discuss the thing that we were fans of. At
- 17:23Speaker 2: one point in time, there was a Christian social media sure, yeah,
- 17:27Speaker 2: what was it called? It was through Acquire the Fire, okay,
- 17:33Speaker 2: which was like a conference convention, the Christian Convention, So
- 17:38Speaker 2: there's cons. I went to the cons and so it
- 17:43Speaker 2: was something through Acquire the Fire. So it was probably
- 17:45Speaker 2: like light or like flame. Yeah, I could, yeah, something
- 17:51Speaker 2: like that.
- 17:52Speaker 1: Do you send me alike on flame, I raised.
- 17:57Speaker 2: Your concern higher to the Lord. It just has like
- 18:00Speaker 2: lifting up hands gosh instead of a like. But it
- 18:06Speaker 2: I genuinely made friends with people on there and like connected, Yeah,
- 18:11Speaker 2: and like discussed the Bible and other religious books. So
- 18:16Speaker 2: i'd i'd say it was definitely the first fandom that
- 18:19Speaker 2: I found community in.
- 18:22Speaker 1: No, that's completely fair, Like if that's the space in
- 18:26Speaker 1: which you sort of learned how to socialize, make connections
- 18:30Speaker 1: with people via something that isn't just yourself, yeah or
- 18:35Speaker 1: that other person. For a lot of secular kids and
- 18:39Speaker 1: for a lot of non secular kids, fandom is usually
- 18:43Speaker 1: the answer there of like a common interest, a club
- 18:46Speaker 1: you join, an activity you do, a media you share. Yeah,
- 18:52Speaker 1: but it's totally fair that it can come from a
- 18:55Speaker 1: place of faith as well.
- 18:57Speaker 2: Like there's kids my age here and they have varying
- 19:01Speaker 2: levels of interest in this thing that I also have
- 19:03Speaker 2: an interest in, and so it just brings people together
- 19:09Speaker 2: in that way. Yeah. I mean I found it other
- 19:12Speaker 2: ways now, absolutely, but I will give it that.
- 19:17Speaker 1: Yeah, give it the credit of community. Absolutely. Yeah. I
- 19:21Speaker 1: was gonna start making some nice, lighthearted jokes about comparing
- 19:26Speaker 1: sort of Christianity to conventions. But it's just all kind
- 19:30Speaker 1: of depressing because I was just about every joke is
- 19:32Speaker 1: just describing a mega church. Yeah, imagine if they had
- 19:36Speaker 1: merchandise stalls or meet and greets. These are things that.
- 19:40Speaker 2: Happen, gosh, the megachurches.
- 19:44Speaker 1: Okay, you talked about the cutthroat Island obsession between ages
- 19:48Speaker 1: six and twelve, Yes, but what happens post cutthroat Island?
- 19:52Speaker 1: What happens after that? What are your teen brain obsessions?
- 19:57Speaker 1: What were your teen brain obsessions? A.
- 20:00Speaker 2: I got super into Greek mythology. I think it technically
- 20:04Speaker 2: probably was also around the twelve ish Yeah, so probably
- 20:08Speaker 2: at this.
- 20:08Speaker 1: Cusp Yeah, this changing of.
- 20:11Speaker 2: The guard into the teenage years. I got super into
- 20:17Speaker 2: Greek mythology obsessively. Yeah. There's like a couple websites that were, like,
- 20:24Speaker 2: I think just made for like kids and young adults,
- 20:27Speaker 2: where they were like every all the Olympians and then
- 20:33Speaker 2: all the people directly related to the Olympians, and then
- 20:35Speaker 2: a couple pages of just like text about them and
- 20:40Speaker 2: so Wikipedia, yeah, like a proto Wikipedia just of like
- 20:45Speaker 2: the basics of Greek mythology. And I read that the
- 20:50Speaker 2: entire websites both of those websites two once.
- 20:54Speaker 1: A week for like a on the sofa until your puked.
- 20:58Speaker 1: And you were like, why am I Why do I
- 20:59Speaker 1: need to puke? Oh? Yeah, because I've been reading gods
- 21:07Speaker 1: dot com for six hours?
- 21:09Speaker 2: Okay, But I do think that one was called Greek
- 21:11Speaker 2: Mythology dot com and one was called Greek myth dot Com.
- 21:15Speaker 2: I'm pretty sure that's what they were called.
- 21:18Speaker 1: Just typed it in to ask Jeeves, and I asked.
- 21:21Speaker 2: Jeeves and he did provide, Jeeves, is the real sees
- 21:27Speaker 2: what a good butler? Such a such a good one. Alright,
- 21:31Speaker 2: He's all right, I'll agree. But I got super into that,
- 21:35Speaker 2: and I read a few books that were actually books
- 21:41Speaker 2: in a library, but I would mostly just come back
- 21:44Speaker 2: and be like, ah, yes, it's time for my weekly
- 21:47Speaker 2: sit down and read everything that Hermes has ever done.
- 21:51Speaker 1: Was this where Percy Jackson got incorporated?
- 21:55Speaker 2: Absolutely? This is where Percy Jackson came in, because I
- 21:58Speaker 2: do think technically in high school I was probably a
- 22:01Speaker 2: little bit old to be reading all the Percy Jackson
- 22:04Speaker 2: books going. In hindsight, I've gone back and.
- 22:07Speaker 1: Tried to read this twelve.
- 22:11Speaker 2: I only started reading for fun at h two and
- 22:15Speaker 2: so I was, yeah, I was catching up, and so
- 22:19Speaker 2: I was reading them a lot. So I'd read those
- 22:23Speaker 2: and then all of the ancillary books as well, in
- 22:26Speaker 2: the Percy Jackson lore, and.
- 22:28Speaker 1: You'd be like that this Hermes isn't accurate, this original hermis.
- 22:33Speaker 2: Why is he a delivery man?
- 22:35Speaker 1: Why? Because he is?
- 22:38Speaker 2: It's actually quite It's it's really more accurate in a
- 22:44Speaker 2: really fun way that I think was really exciting to me.
- 22:48Speaker 2: It was just full of easter eggs and those types
- 22:51Speaker 2: of things where I was like, oh, my gosh, they
- 22:54Speaker 2: know this about this person, and oh, I bet that
- 22:56Speaker 2: this person is actually a daughter of a and that's
- 23:01Speaker 2: why we don't know who this person is. And seeing
- 23:04Speaker 2: the myths play out was really fun in that I
- 23:08Speaker 2: think I know how this ends with this subplot, but
- 23:12Speaker 2: as far as the main story goes, it gave the
- 23:16Speaker 2: feeling of a large scale Greek myth with all the
- 23:20Speaker 2: allusions to all of these things that I had loved
- 23:23Speaker 2: so much but.
- 23:25Speaker 1: Got to be fresh to me.
- 23:27Speaker 2: So it's really fun.
- 23:28Speaker 1: A good like young adult story, but mapped onto a
- 23:31Speaker 1: world you'd already become obsessed with.
- 23:35Speaker 2: Absolutely. I wanted to go to Camp half Blood, so.
- 23:40Speaker 1: I bet just like Christian Camp. That's what you had
- 23:43Speaker 1: to did.
- 23:43Speaker 2: I did just have Christian Camp. Greek mythology was something
- 23:46Speaker 2: my parents were iffy on letting me.
- 23:50Speaker 1: Yes.
- 23:52Speaker 2: I remember one time bringing up the fact that I
- 23:54Speaker 2: was like, it's so wild, like reading accounts of early
- 23:57Speaker 2: people following Zeus and the fervor with which they believe
- 24:03Speaker 2: this is like, they believe this as much as we believe.
- 24:06Speaker 1: In our God.
- 24:07Speaker 2: And the response was, yeah, but ours is real. Yeah,
- 24:10Speaker 2: and I was like, okay, they thought that too, though
- 24:14Speaker 2: they were pretty sure.
- 24:16Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 24:17Speaker 2: So it was just a funny little thing in my
- 24:20Speaker 2: youth of being like, no, I'm gonna read this.
- 24:24Speaker 1: Yeah. It's that parental dilemma between like, well, it's pagan,
- 24:29Speaker 1: but it's also the classics. H huh. It feels educational,
- 24:32Speaker 1: it feels smart, and this is how we have a
- 24:34Speaker 1: little baby Frasier. But if it's like, oh, but it's
- 24:40Speaker 1: also introducing paganistic ideas or the concepts of other gods,
- 24:45Speaker 1: then it's yeah, sort of dangerous to the ideology.
- 24:49Speaker 2: I think by the time they found out how obsessed
- 24:51Speaker 2: I was, it was too late.
- 24:53Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 24:53Speaker 2: I think they were like, we can't there's no way
- 24:55Speaker 2: we can walk this one back.
- 24:57Speaker 1: Can't put that back inside the Greek vas.
- 25:00Speaker 2: You can't put that back in Pandora's.
- 25:01Speaker 1: But the Greek mythology experts a So did you feel
- 25:07Speaker 1: like you had to know everything about Greek mythology, like
- 25:11Speaker 1: every time there was like a new a hint to
- 25:13Speaker 1: a new piece of information or a new story. Yeah, yeah,
- 25:17Speaker 1: to consume that.
- 25:18Speaker 2: Absolutely, like every piece, every little piece of anything. I
- 25:24Speaker 2: was like, ooh, Hestia, she was one of the Olympians
- 25:28Speaker 2: and then left because she didn't want all of this
- 25:32Speaker 2: type of power. She just wanted to be cozy and hearth.
- 25:35Speaker 2: This is incredible. So like the idea of like the
- 25:39Speaker 2: lost God of Olympus was I was obsessed with, or
- 25:44Speaker 2: the Hades and Persephone I was obsessed with the idea
- 25:49Speaker 2: of because there were such differing accounts, because there were
- 25:54Speaker 2: the accounts that the general story is Persephone is the
- 26:00Speaker 2: daughter of Demeter. She's the goddess of spring, and she
- 26:03Speaker 2: is married to Hades, the god of the underworld, and
- 26:07Speaker 2: when she is down in Hades, that's why we have winter.
- 26:10Speaker 2: It's because spring and flowers is under is in hell.
- 26:14Speaker 1: Well, we got winter because of God.
- 26:17Speaker 2: When there's a God in there in the underworld right now,
- 26:21Speaker 2: and that's why we got winter.
- 26:25Speaker 1: It is what it is.
- 26:27Speaker 2: But there the two accounts of that story are Hades
- 26:30Speaker 2: stole her, okay and like kidnapped her, et cetera. And
- 26:36Speaker 2: the other one was Zeus wouldn't leave her the fuck alone,
- 26:40Speaker 2: and so Hades was like, he won't find you here.
- 26:45Speaker 2: Here is here is like respite, Come here, eat some
- 26:50Speaker 2: of the food. He can't come here. And so one
- 26:54Speaker 2: of them is the demonization of Hades. That happens a lot.
- 26:58Speaker 2: And one of them is that would Gin only be
- 27:00Speaker 2: really kind to give someone a safe space and then
- 27:04Speaker 2: they fall in love after that, But there's a lot
- 27:06Speaker 2: of accounts of them being in love and.
- 27:09Speaker 1: It being good. And this was a Greek mythology lesson.
- 27:12Speaker 1: In the middle of an interview, I managed to sneak
- 27:14Speaker 1: that in there. Oh, literally, anytime you give me a chair,
- 27:17Speaker 1: this is supposed to be about you.
- 27:21Speaker 2: Fine, I love that story.
- 27:26Speaker 1: That qualifies I'll leave it in. Were there any other
- 27:29Speaker 1: sort of teen brain obsessions, sort of the things that
- 27:32Speaker 1: people will have known you for in terms of being
- 27:35Speaker 1: part of your identity.
- 27:37Speaker 2: M hmm, absolutely. I think cheerleading was a huge one, sure, random. Yeah,
- 27:47Speaker 2: in the same way there's camps, in the same way that,
- 27:51Speaker 2: like sports, being a fan of sports is tangential to that.
- 27:57Speaker 2: I would say, cheerleading, very fun, big part of my
- 28:02Speaker 2: youth that people would have known me for. Also, Christian music,
- 28:06Speaker 2: like rock, Christian rock scene. I was so invested.
- 28:13Speaker 1: Want to shout out your favorite bands, the ones you
- 28:16Speaker 1: were so into? Oh I yeah, Oh god, well I've
- 28:24Speaker 1: got my next question. Were any of these uh these
- 28:27Speaker 1: obsessions cringing juice?
- 28:29Speaker 2: Yeah, literally every single fucking one.
- 28:31Speaker 1: So I think these bands, so I did.
- 28:34Speaker 2: Of course I loved Skillet, Oh yeah, of course I
- 28:37Speaker 2: loved Hawk Nelson.
- 28:38Speaker 1: Of course.
- 28:39Speaker 2: Of course I loved Reliant k give it up. I
- 28:43Speaker 2: loved House of Heroes, Praise Jesus, connecting to Greek mythology.
- 28:48Speaker 2: They're like the House of hero shirt. I still have it.
- 28:51Speaker 1: That you must have had that T shirt for like, yeah,
- 28:55Speaker 1: a long time. Yeah.
- 28:57Speaker 2: I cut the sleeves off and it's ripping under the
- 28:59Speaker 2: arm and it's safety pinned together, but it's Medusa's head
- 29:03Speaker 2: and it just says House of Heroes.
- 29:04Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 29:05Speaker 2: And so it's this connection of this type of rock
- 29:09Speaker 2: that I was really into. The Christianity that was still
- 29:12Speaker 2: a really big part of my life. And that Greek mythology.
- 29:14Speaker 1: Oh my goodness, it's combined all three.
- 29:16Speaker 2: We went to a music festival when I was in
- 29:19Speaker 2: high school, a Christian music festival up in South Dakota,
- 29:24Speaker 2: which was hours. It was probably an eighteen hour drive
- 29:29Speaker 2: now twelve to eighteen somewhere in there. Sure that when
- 29:33Speaker 2: I was in high school, my mom let me and
- 29:37Speaker 2: my friends just go. Like there was a couple, there
- 29:40Speaker 2: was a couple of the youth less it was a
- 29:41Speaker 2: Christian music Like one of the youth leaders went with us.
- 29:45Speaker 1: Sure, and you had a chaperone.
- 29:47Speaker 2: Yeah, so this is why she let you get Okay,
- 29:49Speaker 2: but that chaperone had barely turned eighteen.
- 29:51Speaker 1: Okay.
- 29:53Speaker 2: She called us off school for that week, scandalous, like,
- 29:59Speaker 2: just so that we could go up there and see
- 30:02Speaker 2: all of the music. There was even a band at
- 30:05Speaker 2: that time called I want to say Life Light No,
- 30:10Speaker 2: I think that was the name of the festival. But
- 30:13Speaker 2: there was a band where the lead singer was a
- 30:16Speaker 2: woman who had half of her hair really light blonde
- 30:18Speaker 2: and really dark brown, and so there was like the
- 30:21Speaker 2: split in the middle. I did that with my hair, Yes,
- 30:25Speaker 2: there was an just a time when I had half
- 30:27Speaker 2: and half hair, specifically because of this front woman. Yes, nice,
- 30:35Speaker 2: it gave me the idea for it. I didn't necessarily
- 30:38Speaker 2: listen to them as much they were on they were
- 30:40Speaker 2: like generally on playlist a style inspiration. Yeah, and so
- 30:45Speaker 2: stylistically and just in my general life. I was taken
- 30:48Speaker 2: a lot from this Christian music scene. Yeah, it was
- 30:52Speaker 2: so fun.
- 30:54Speaker 1: Yeah. The way they can all combine together like that
- 30:56Speaker 1: into one on T shirt is really beautiful. I think
- 31:01Speaker 1: you've painted a beautiful imagery of your your teen brain obsessions.
- 31:04Speaker 1: Absolutely okay, not to be a Debbie downer. Oh and
- 31:09Speaker 1: some people have used this section to to talk about
- 31:12Speaker 1: some of some difficult things that they've gone through in life.
- 31:14Speaker 1: But you don't have to do that if you don't
- 31:16Speaker 1: want to. I probably won't. Which media text or fandom
- 31:22Speaker 1: has been a source of comfort in difficult times for you?
- 31:26Speaker 2: I'm gonna say Lord of the Rings. Lovely stuff, the books,
- 31:30Speaker 2: the films, the appendices. I'm putting this like in this space, this,
- 31:38Speaker 2: I think is the best space to talk about this.
- 31:41Speaker 2: I probably could have used Lord of the Rings to
- 31:43Speaker 2: answer any of the other questions. Yeah, I was really
- 31:48Speaker 2: into it when I was really young because they were
- 31:51Speaker 2: one of the first films that we went to in theaters. Sure,
- 31:56Speaker 2: and my dad was obsessed with them. He had like
- 31:59Speaker 2: books and books of maps and this is like different
- 32:02Speaker 2: versions of it as it got updated. Here's one that
- 32:06Speaker 2: is illustrated by Alan Lee. And so Lord of the
- 32:10Speaker 2: Rings has been with me all through. Yeah, always an obsession,
- 32:14Speaker 2: and I think that's probably why it's the type of
- 32:17Speaker 2: thing that I come back to when I'm like, life
- 32:20Speaker 2: is a lot right now, I am going to listen to, like,
- 32:25Speaker 2: instead of listening to anything else, I'm just going to
- 32:28Speaker 2: put on Lord of the Rings audio books. Yeah, or
- 32:33Speaker 2: we rewatch them every year.
- 32:35Speaker 1: Yeah, we watch it every year around Thanksgiving and it
- 32:38Speaker 1: acts as kind of a gateway into the colder months,
- 32:42Speaker 1: quite fortunate. And it stays relatively warm in October and
- 32:45Speaker 1: November here, yeah, and then like December through April is freezing. Yes,
- 32:52Speaker 1: So it's just a nice entry point to relax. If
- 32:57Speaker 1: the winter can be described as the difficult time, and I.
- 33:02Speaker 2: Think there are a lot of benefits to the winter.
- 33:04Speaker 2: You can hunker, We play a lot more video games
- 33:07Speaker 2: in the winter. That's wonderful. But it is really nice
- 33:12Speaker 2: before going into that time when it feels like the
- 33:16Speaker 2: sun may never shine again.
- 33:20Speaker 1: To have the comfort of middle age.
- 33:22Speaker 2: Yes, and it's just a wonderful place where you can see, Oh,
- 33:27Speaker 2: they're toiling to do the right thing, and then the
- 33:30Speaker 2: sun will shine out the clearer and it's just really
- 33:33Speaker 2: beautiful going into that season. The color schemes a lot
- 33:37Speaker 2: in a lot of it are very fall winter, which
- 33:40Speaker 2: feels so cozy. I'm so excited for the extension of this.
- 33:48Speaker 2: I love cozy gaming as well. Tales of the Shire,
- 33:52Speaker 2: so a cozy, cozy game set in the Shire. I
- 33:57Speaker 2: think it's just I'm being fed, yeah, and being fed.
- 34:02Speaker 1: Cozy core Middle Earth core cozy times.
- 34:07Speaker 2: Yes, abssolutely, And so I think it will continue to
- 34:13Speaker 2: be that for me as it has been.
- 34:15Speaker 1: Yeah. And last year we had Chris and Jen and
- 34:20Speaker 1: Jason over and did a full Lord of the Rings
- 34:23Speaker 1: day where we watched all three extended edition films in
- 34:27Speaker 1: one day.
- 34:28Speaker 2: Yes, and we fed them along with along with the.
- 34:33Speaker 1: Films, Yeah, a lot of similar dishes that happen at
- 34:36Speaker 1: similar times, similar snacks at similar times. There's a the
- 34:41Speaker 1: Clauser you get to mordor the bigger drought. There is
- 34:43Speaker 1: a food for whatever reason. It's whatever reason, lambas bread
- 34:47Speaker 1: and more lampus bread.
- 34:48Speaker 2: But you know it's fine, and our friends love us.
- 34:53Speaker 2: But even that is connects back to the idea of
- 34:56Speaker 2: comfort and difficult times. Is also friendship. Yes, Lord of
- 35:00Speaker 2: the Rings has helped.
- 35:01Speaker 1: Lord of the Rings teaches that. Yeah, it teaches that.
- 35:04Speaker 1: And good book.
- 35:05Speaker 2: Yes, honestly, that might be the only alternative my family
- 35:09Speaker 2: is okay with. Yeah, is if I decide, you know what,
- 35:14Speaker 2: I don't really follow the Bible anymore, but gosh darn it,
- 35:17Speaker 2: I follow Lord of the Rings. That's my new religion, Tolkienism. Tolkienism, Wait,
- 35:25Speaker 2: sounds too much like tom As soon as it came
- 35:28Speaker 2: out of my mouth, I was like, I don't like
- 35:30Speaker 2: how that feels.
- 35:31Speaker 1: All right, let's just move on. Okay, Thinking back to
- 35:35Speaker 1: community once more, but the present day, What is your
- 35:39Speaker 1: current favorite fandom or community to be a part of
- 35:43Speaker 1: in the year of Our Lord twenty twenty four.
- 35:46Speaker 2: I am still currently mostly an observer in this community.
- 35:54Speaker 2: But fiber arts, Oh yeah, I at least I think
- 36:00Speaker 2: if you would have asked me two months ago, it
- 36:02Speaker 2: could have been even a different answer. But right, now
- 36:06Speaker 2: we're moving into fall, we're moving into winter. I have
- 36:12Speaker 2: seen like this reinvigoration of fiber arts within me. I
- 36:18Speaker 2: I've been doing hand exercises. I have kind of weak
- 36:21Speaker 2: joints in my hands. That's made some fiber arts stuff
- 36:24Speaker 2: a little difficult. But finding people on the internet who
- 36:30Speaker 2: have similar issues, and oh, I do these exercises and
- 36:33Speaker 2: it turns out this is what helped helped me be
- 36:37Speaker 2: able to crochet for longer, or getting the knitting machine
- 36:41Speaker 2: and being able to pull it out and look at
- 36:43Speaker 2: community videos like the comments under videos, or I'm in
- 36:48Speaker 2: a couple of discords nice for like machine knitters, like
- 36:53Speaker 2: as a resource for my LK. One point fifty is
- 36:57Speaker 2: having some issues. Does anybody know how to change the
- 37:01Speaker 2: sponge bar? And you're gonna get about forty responses. Yeah,
- 37:07Speaker 2: just from this from this community.
- 37:10Speaker 1: You've got to ring out your sponge bar.
- 37:11Speaker 2: Gotta ring out that sponge bar if you want the
- 37:14Speaker 2: if you want the hooks to stay in place. Yeah.
- 37:18Speaker 2: But seeing that has been wonderful. I've recently looked at
- 37:23Speaker 2: a couple knitting patterns and been inspired to try to
- 37:28Speaker 2: adapt them for the knitting machine. Cool and I've looked
- 37:32Speaker 2: at it, and I'm like, I think this could work.
- 37:34Speaker 2: If this can work, maybe I could participate in knit alongs,
- 37:38Speaker 2: like in community. And so it's something that I've recently
- 37:44Speaker 2: reinvigorated to a depth of enjoyment I haven't previously been
- 37:48Speaker 2: able to reach.
- 37:50Speaker 1: Yeah, I get that.
- 37:51Speaker 2: And maybe it's because of the intentionality that I've had
- 37:55Speaker 2: to put behind it.
- 37:57Speaker 1: Yeah, to build the strength in your hands. Yeah, and so.
- 38:01Speaker 2: I've had to find some accommodations. I've had to figure
- 38:03Speaker 2: out new things within this space, and it's it's been
- 38:07Speaker 2: really exciting.
- 38:08Speaker 1: That's good. That's great.
- 38:10Speaker 2: So be prepared to see hats and maybe sweaters. Definitely socks.
- 38:17Speaker 1: But what about the status of hats.
- 38:19Speaker 2: Oh, definitely hats. Definitely hats. Definitely socks. We'll see if
- 38:23Speaker 2: the sweaters work.
- 38:25Speaker 1: Good stuff. They will they will they will work. They
- 38:28Speaker 1: will work. You've made sweaters before.
- 38:29Speaker 2: I've made sweaters before, and I'll do it again.
- 38:33Speaker 1: And obviously shout out our resident fiber artists. Follow Jen
- 38:38Speaker 1: at half double Docent on Insta.
- 38:40Speaker 2: Absolutely, she is a constant source of inspiration.
- 38:45Speaker 1: All right, we'll get negative again. Yeah, I don't like
- 38:48Speaker 1: to be well, I like to be negative. Sometimes if
- 38:50Speaker 1: it's negative for the sake of humor, I'll be negative.
- 38:54Speaker 1: But let's let's be a little negative, and I'll ask
- 38:58Speaker 1: what fantom or community are you can over being a
- 39:01Speaker 1: part of but you can't quite quit? Or which frandom
- 39:05Speaker 1: have you quit because it just got too toxic?
- 39:10Speaker 2: I think this is going to be a big hitter.
- 39:13Speaker 2: I think most of the fandoms that I'm no longer
- 39:17Speaker 2: like a massive part of there was a gradual off rand.
- 39:23Speaker 1: Yeah, the natural ebb and flow of being into things
- 39:27Speaker 1: throughout your life. Yes.
- 39:30Speaker 2: The hard pivot that I think a lot of people
- 39:32Speaker 2: will understand is Harry Potter. Ah, Yes, it's it's the
- 39:37Speaker 2: hard pivot that I think a lot of people will
- 39:38Speaker 2: understand that I have some conflict over. When I was
- 39:45Speaker 2: Harry Potter was something that I wasn't allowed to even touch.
- 39:50Speaker 2: Like if my friends had a Harry Potter book and
- 39:53Speaker 2: they accidentally dropped it and I was seen picking it
- 39:56Speaker 2: up and giving it to them, If.
- 39:58Speaker 1: You were seen being a good neighbor, that would be
- 40:00Speaker 1: a bad thing there.
- 40:02Speaker 2: I felt that there was great risk, and so when
- 40:07Speaker 2: I was finding who I was separate from religion, I
- 40:12Speaker 2: read them all. I watched them all. I really delved
- 40:16Speaker 2: into that as like I'm separating myself and I'm making
- 40:22Speaker 2: this choice that I couldn't in my childhood. Now.
- 40:26Speaker 1: JK.
- 40:26Speaker 2: Rowling, Well, she probably always was a turf.
- 40:29Speaker 1: Yeah, but we didn't have the word for it back
- 40:31Speaker 1: then though, And I.
- 40:35Speaker 2: Was just learning how to be a good person to
- 40:41Speaker 2: my fellow man in the way that I now see
- 40:45Speaker 2: being a good person, and so realizing what has happened there.
- 40:52Speaker 2: We have the books in physical form, and I reread
- 40:56Speaker 2: them in that physical form. But I'm not going to
- 40:59Speaker 2: buy I'm like, I'm not I'm not going to as
- 41:03Speaker 2: much as I would love the game, the Harry Potter game,
- 41:07Speaker 2: I'm not gonna buy it.
- 41:09Speaker 1: Oh, Hogwarts Legacy or the New Quidditch Yes, the Hogwarts.
- 41:13Speaker 2: Yeah yeah, yeah, as much as I would love Hogwarts Legacy,
- 41:16Speaker 2: I'm not gonna buy it. Sure, And so it's been
- 41:19Speaker 2: kind of an intentional line.
- 41:22Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, you don't want to line the pockets of
- 41:26Speaker 1: well I suppose to. Like they always say, it's a
- 41:29Speaker 1: free market, isn't it. It's a free market capitalism. So
- 41:32Speaker 1: you're choosing to vote with your wallet and just be like, well,
- 41:36Speaker 1: that person has enough money and is doing enough bad
- 41:38Speaker 1: things with that money.
- 41:40Speaker 2: Yep, and they don't. They don't need mine, and I
- 41:45Speaker 2: I can engage with the story with the versions.
- 41:49Speaker 1: I already have. Yeah, the original thing that isn't just ancillary. Well,
- 41:54Speaker 1: if you know, if I call a lot of the
- 41:57Speaker 1: Wizarding World things an ancillary cash grab, that really under
- 42:00Speaker 1: does about ninety percent of the content that we cover
- 42:02Speaker 1: here at gate Leaper, because most things are just spinoffs
- 42:07Speaker 1: of spinoffs of spinoffs.
- 42:08Speaker 2: Oh yeah, that's not the part I'm critiquing. H answer,
- 42:11Speaker 2: cash crabs.
- 42:12Speaker 1: Yeah, that's not her main crime. No, that's not the crime.
- 42:16Speaker 1: Might literally be a crime now, like we'll fight, we'll
- 42:19Speaker 1: find out as cases developed. But be so funny if
- 42:22Speaker 1: she faces legal action for things. JK. Rowling, I'm not
- 42:25Speaker 1: scared of saying her name. Okay, we've made it through
- 42:29Speaker 1: these questions. We've made it through most of these questions. Yeah,
- 42:32Speaker 1: there's just there's just one left, and it's looking to
- 42:35Speaker 1: the future. So we've covered your life through fandom, such
- 42:38Speaker 1: as the name of this series. But now we're going
- 42:41Speaker 1: to look to the future the future order. Yes, whether
- 42:45Speaker 1: that's Villain era, more Villain era, or some kind of
- 42:49Speaker 1: new era. That scientists haven't even conceived of yet.
- 42:52Speaker 2: Gosh, I will send a copy of the scientific journal
- 42:56Speaker 2: I get published in whenever I discover that new era.
- 42:59Speaker 1: Beyond villain lovely stuff, Yes, beyond villain, Yes, dark villain,
- 43:04Speaker 1: dark villain.
- 43:05Speaker 2: Uh, string villain, string villain, quantum villain.
- 43:09Speaker 1: Quantum villain. What's a fantom or media property that you
- 43:13Speaker 1: want to get into but you haven't had the chance
- 43:16Speaker 1: to yet. It could be financial barriers, could be time barriers.
- 43:22Speaker 1: It could be gatekeeping based barriers. This one.
- 43:26Speaker 2: If you would have asked me a couple months ago
- 43:29Speaker 2: as well, uh huh, I would have not been as
- 43:32Speaker 2: close to engaging in this fandom as I currently am.
- 43:36Speaker 1: Okay, PC gaming, pc gaming.
- 43:40Speaker 2: We did the PC gaming episode and I knew nothing
- 43:45Speaker 2: about PC gaming. If you have listened to the episode
- 43:49Speaker 2: you can confirm. But it's a space that I have loved.
- 43:56Speaker 2: When I first started playing video games on console because
- 43:59Speaker 2: that was my first other than Nancy Drew, that was
- 44:02Speaker 2: kind of my first type of game play was a
- 44:08Speaker 2: huge screen that's in a living room, and so because
- 44:13Speaker 2: it's on the TV in the living room, any mistake
- 44:16Speaker 2: I made felt so big and so public, even though
- 44:21Speaker 2: it's just you. It's on the TV, and so the
- 44:23Speaker 2: coding is like, oh gosh, I've failed and everyone saw it.
- 44:27Speaker 2: There's only two people here, yeah, and cats, and the
- 44:31Speaker 2: cats honestly they are more judgmental than either of us. Yeah,
- 44:35Speaker 2: so that's a fair shot. But I loved doing handheld
- 44:42Speaker 2: so we got the switch light. Yes, playing video games
- 44:45Speaker 2: on that helped me kind of see this as personal enjoyment.
- 44:50Speaker 2: But PC gaming still remained elusive. It felt like if
- 44:55Speaker 2: you were doing PC gaming, you had to do it properly,
- 44:58Speaker 2: and there was a lot of rules and a lot
- 44:59Speaker 2: of expertise, and you were supposed to buy all the
- 45:02Speaker 2: pieces and then sometimes you broke them and if you
- 45:05Speaker 2: didn't have enough money to risk breaking it, then oh no,
- 45:08Speaker 2: yeah you shouldn't be.
- 45:10Speaker 1: I don't know.
- 45:10Speaker 2: It just felt like there was a financial and technical
- 45:16Speaker 2: and gate keepy barrier.
- 45:18Speaker 1: Yeah. Prior prior to.
- 45:21Speaker 2: Our PC gaming episode, yes, like it was. The games
- 45:25Speaker 2: we talked about were fun, the guests were really inviting
- 45:28Speaker 2: into this world, even for me who knew nothing. And
- 45:33Speaker 2: so now there will We are in the process of
- 45:37Speaker 2: acquiring a PC from Aaron of bfyt W.
- 45:42Speaker 1: Yeah, the wonderful Aaron Randolph Yes of bfyt W and
- 45:47Speaker 1: the gate Leapers Cast Yes is selling as a piece
- 45:52Speaker 1: eight Yeah.
- 45:53Speaker 2: And so he's just been so kind of like, oh,
- 45:58Speaker 2: we want to do this and this and this, Oh,
- 46:00Speaker 2: then this one should do great for you, and just
- 46:03Speaker 2: being very kind and explaining things of I don't necessarily
- 46:07Speaker 2: know what that means. Oh, well that means us. So
- 46:10Speaker 2: it's just been a good community that I don't even
- 46:14Speaker 2: have the PC yet. Yeah, And I'm so excited to
- 46:18Speaker 2: delve into this world, and I think it's going to
- 46:20Speaker 2: be really helpful for me exploring new games I may
- 46:24Speaker 2: not have otherwise tried because it's it's in the office,
- 46:27Speaker 2: Like how much more private could this?
- 46:30Speaker 1: Yeah be?
- 46:31Speaker 2: Like it's on the personal computer. This is my personal exploration.
- 46:38Speaker 1: Is ah.
- 46:40Speaker 2: So I'll get some I'll get some cozy games, some
- 46:43Speaker 2: indie cozy games. I'll get some spooky games maybe for
- 46:46Speaker 2: spooky season. For spooky season. I don't normally like anything spooky,
- 46:51Speaker 2: but tis the season.
- 46:54Speaker 1: Tis the season? Ding dong merrily on ah, how dare
- 47:00Speaker 1: you No? I loved the answer to this question because
- 47:03Speaker 1: I think I could be wrong, but most of the people,
- 47:06Speaker 1: it's it's been something that oh one day, I'll get
- 47:10Speaker 1: into this, but there are no current active plans, whereas
- 47:12Speaker 1: this is in the pro I mean, Aaron literally has
- 47:16Speaker 1: just messaged me the quote while I've been recording this podcast.
- 47:19Speaker 1: So it's happening. So it's it's happening. And so by
- 47:24Speaker 1: the time we sort of next check in, I don't know,
- 47:26Speaker 1: one of our fandom flashback Patreon episodes or something like that,
- 47:31Speaker 1: you'll have You'll have dived into gaming.
- 47:35Speaker 2: I'll have played some games on the PC. I'll look
- 47:39Speaker 2: at what a how do you do a how do
- 47:41Speaker 2: you get a mode?
- 47:43Speaker 1: How do you get a mod? Indeed, how do you
- 47:46Speaker 1: do that?
- 47:47Speaker 2: I'll probably play all the games vanilla first for a
- 47:52Speaker 2: long time, yeah.
- 47:55Speaker 1: And then get onto mod's then then mod everything to shit.
- 47:58Speaker 2: Yeah. Honestly, it might just be Star Valley. That might
- 48:02Speaker 2: be the only thing that gets mods. Oh fantastic, I'm excited.
- 48:09Speaker 1: Yeah, that's that's gonna be so good. You're going to
- 48:11Speaker 1: get into PC gaming, into the world of mods. Stream.
- 48:19Speaker 1: Oh my god, if you do a gate leaper stream,
- 48:21Speaker 1: that'd be amazing.
- 48:22Speaker 2: My god, I would love it. Our live show was
- 48:24Speaker 2: so much fun, uh huh that I was like, do
- 48:28Speaker 2: I want to stream I think I think you should.
- 48:31Speaker 2: Oh my god, are you going to do this? Oh
- 48:33Speaker 2: my god, am I going to do this? Tell Aaron
- 48:35Speaker 2: we need a bigger computer.
- 48:36Speaker 1: Now. I love that you're going to achieve the final
- 48:40Speaker 1: question already by the time, not by the time people
- 48:44Speaker 1: are listening to this, but pretty soon after.
- 48:47Speaker 2: Yeah, I'll thread about it.
- 48:51Speaker 1: We're threaders now. Yeah, it's like Twitter was in like
- 48:54Speaker 1: twenty ten. It's great. Okay, we do a little thing
- 48:59Speaker 1: at the end of the interviews that sort of undermines
- 49:02Speaker 1: the entire last hour of chat. And that's where I
- 49:07Speaker 1: ask to hear your light through fandom in a simple
- 49:10Speaker 1: little flow chart. If you could sum up one thing
- 49:13Speaker 1: from your childhood, one thing from your teens, one thing
- 49:16Speaker 1: from your twenties, and one thing for now and put
- 49:20Speaker 1: it in in a flow chart, what would you say
- 49:24Speaker 1: were your obsessions? What would you say were your fandom obsessions?
- 49:30Speaker 2: If I were doing this, I will have a serious answer.
- 49:33Speaker 2: But obviously I could say Lord of the Rings into
- 49:37Speaker 2: Lord of the Ring, into Lord of the Rings into
- 49:40Speaker 2: Lord of the Rings video.
- 49:41Speaker 1: Games, and that would be valid.
- 49:43Speaker 2: And that would be valid. But I think it would
- 49:46Speaker 2: probably be more accurate to say Gregor the Overlander, into Christianity,
- 49:53Speaker 2: into Christian music, Okay, into Lord of the Rings, into PC.
- 49:58Speaker 1: Gaming Okay, now even choosing something that.
- 50:02Speaker 2: I'm oh, oh shit, I forgot crochet. Oh god, this
- 50:08Speaker 2: is a shambles. No.
- 50:10Speaker 1: I like it because you've, in true order fashion, you've
- 50:13Speaker 1: hacked the format, because you understand the mind of the
- 50:17Speaker 1: person in charge of the format. So what you've done
- 50:21Speaker 1: there is I think the purpose of the question is
- 50:23Speaker 1: to try and get you to narrow everything you talked
- 50:26Speaker 1: about down to one. But you just listed most of them.
- 50:29Speaker 2: Yes, honestly, it could have all of them, could have
- 50:33Speaker 2: been it could have been Lord of the Rings, Lord
- 50:37Speaker 2: of the Rings, Lord of the Rings, Lord of.
- 50:38Speaker 1: The Rings, Lord of the Ring. You know, let's just
- 50:39Speaker 1: say that's the answer.
- 50:40Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, honestly, Yeah, that's it.
- 50:43Speaker 1: Yeah, that's it. That's that's probably it.
- 50:46Speaker 2: Samwise Gamgee is the real hero here.
- 50:48Speaker 1: Yeah. Oh yeah, in this essay.
- 50:50Speaker 2: In this essay, that's it. That's the point.
- 50:53Speaker 1: That's it, and that's it. That's the interview. Yeah, thanks
- 50:56Speaker 1: for thanks for.
- 50:57Speaker 2: Doing this, Uldra, thanks for interviewing me.
- 50:59Speaker 1: Yeah, I'm sure everyone will have loved hearing all about
- 51:02Speaker 1: your life through fandom. That's the name of the series.
- 51:10Speaker 1: There we Go. That was Audra's life through fandom. I
- 51:13Speaker 1: hope you learned a few more things about our resident captain. Obviously,
- 51:18Speaker 1: I think Ordra's very interesting, but now hopefully you do too.
- 51:21Speaker 1: Unless you already previously held that belief and this podcast
- 51:25Speaker 1: has done something to derail that, then ignore the last hour.
- 51:28Speaker 1: But thanks for joining us. Do you follow us on

- 52:18Speaker 1: to full video versions of each episode recording, which you
- 52:23Speaker 1: know it does add a lot, it really does. There's
- 52:26Speaker 1: sometimes visual elements, sometimes physical comedy on a podcast What's
- 52:30Speaker 1: that all about? And there's usually about ten to fifteen
- 52:32Speaker 1: minutes that gets left on the cutting room floor of
- 52:35Speaker 1: the audio version. So if you've been listening to this
- 52:38Speaker 1: and thinking, oh, they're making a good thing, then do
