- 0:00Speaker 1: All right, everybody, this is the Meat Eater Podcast. We're
- 0:02Speaker 1: coming at you. I want to say we're coming at
- 0:04Speaker 1: you live from Ketchum, but we're not.
- 0:08Speaker 2: It's not live. We're coming at you.
- 0:09Speaker 1: Dead from ketchum Idaho. And before I get into the
- 0:15Speaker 1: main thing, Ketchum Idaho the way I always knew ketcham Iidaho.
- 0:18Speaker 1: And this is my first time I've ever been in
- 0:20Speaker 1: ketchum Iidaho. I'm here for a bad country hunters and
- 0:22Speaker 1: anglers get together, and I always knew it, being like
- 0:26Speaker 1: we're Hemingway, Ernest Hemingway, the writer who wrote perhaps the
- 0:30Speaker 1: greatest fishing story of all time, The Old Man to
- 0:33Speaker 1: see you guys read that. Yes, he shot himself to
- 0:36Speaker 1: death here and right here in town, his graves here
- 0:41Speaker 1: in town. And I always knew that it was funny.
- 0:43Speaker 1: This book just came out called Hemingway's Guns, and it
- 0:46Speaker 1: was always rumored that Hemingway shot himself with with a
- 0:50Speaker 1: boss shotgun that he bought at Abercrombie and Fitch, which
- 0:53Speaker 1: is totally funny because now Abercrombie and Fish sells shirt
- 0:56Speaker 1: to say Abercrimey and Fitch on him. He used to
- 0:57Speaker 1: be able to buy guns there, so he's full. He
- 0:59Speaker 1: shot himself with the shotgun. And it turned out these
- 1:02Speaker 1: guys to this book reads and they called it Hemingway's Guns.
- 1:04Speaker 1: They did a bunch of research and they realized he
- 1:06Speaker 1: shot himself with a twelve gage shotgun that was a W. C.
- 1:09Speaker 2: Scott and Son.
- 1:11Speaker 1: After he kills himself, apparently like someone in his family,
- 1:15Speaker 1: brings his shotgun down to a welder here in town
- 1:20Speaker 1: to have it destroyed. The guy smashes the stock up,
- 1:23Speaker 1: cuts it in little pieces and goes to berries in
- 1:25Speaker 1: the field. One of these writers goes to find and
- 1:28Speaker 1: whoever this welder is. His kid still runs a welding
- 1:31Speaker 1: shop as of a couple of years ago. The kid
- 1:33Speaker 1: pulls out a match box showing him some parts they
- 1:36Speaker 1: kept off this shotgun.
- 1:37Speaker 2: The guy looks at it.
- 1:38Speaker 1: He says, that's not a boss shotgun, you know, that's
- 1:41Speaker 1: a Scott and Son shotgun. And he apparently this shotgun
- 1:46Speaker 1: he like hundred ducks in Italy. Shot shooting competitions in
- 1:50Speaker 1: Cuban went to a Safari and East Africa.
- 1:52Speaker 2: Off the shotgun. Favorite shotgun got a weird deal right
- 1:56Speaker 2: here and catch them. And Ryan Callahan, who's sitting right here.
- 1:58Speaker 1: Told me that whenever he runs of alcohol and he
- 2:01Speaker 1: doesn't have any money, he just goes and takes the
- 2:03Speaker 1: offerings that are left having ways.
- 2:06Speaker 3: It's right across the street.
- 2:09Speaker 1: When I asked him about this, he said, I can
- 2:10Speaker 1: walk over and get some alcohol for you right now.
- 2:12Speaker 2: Doesn't anyways graves and yesterday is sure.
- 2:15Speaker 1: Enough, we're standing there in town here. We're standing there
- 2:18Speaker 1: and he tell me it's like, oh yeah, people always
- 2:20Speaker 1: going to do his grave. We're standing there and two
- 2:22Speaker 1: dudes come up. They're like, excuse me, sir, would you
- 2:23Speaker 1: know what the cemetery is. I'm like, let me guess,
- 2:25Speaker 1: you know, And sure enough, sure they're heading over to
- 2:28Speaker 1: papa's Papa's tomb.
- 2:30Speaker 4: Well, yeah, I mean, what are your thoughts on that?
- 2:31Speaker 2: You just bad to steal?
- 2:33Speaker 1: It is because when they put someone told me, like,
- 2:36Speaker 1: normally you put plastic flowers at a grave. Someone told
- 2:39Speaker 1: me that they just periodically come and take them on
- 2:41Speaker 1: throwing the garbage.
- 2:42Speaker 3: Yeah, it's only it's only okay if you're buying alcohol
- 2:46Speaker 3: or guns.
- 2:47Speaker 1: Yeah, I think so, not plastic flowers. Now, something formal
- 2:53Speaker 1: the media or podcast Rocky by First Light based right
- 2:58Speaker 1: here and catch am Ida Home. It's an original hunting
- 3:01Speaker 1: clothing brand. They make high performance hunting apparel. I wear
- 3:04Speaker 1: it all the time. These guys pioneered Reno wool hunting clothing,
- 3:08Speaker 1: like the first ones that take that fabric and technology
- 3:11Speaker 1: and bring it into honting clothing. They make everything to
- 3:14Speaker 1: get you covered for hunting, from your marino bass layers
- 3:17Speaker 1: out to waterproof, breathable technical layers. Like I said, the
- 3:21Speaker 1: good thing and you're gonna find us out in Minica
- 3:22Speaker 1: is to these guys right here.
- 3:24Speaker 2: The guys at first like.
- 3:25Speaker 1: Actually hunting fish real hard all year round, and they
- 3:27Speaker 1: test their stuff endlessly and it shows. And the weird
- 3:29Speaker 1: thing is, if you ever want to calm and ask
- 3:31Speaker 1: them a question, an actual dude will answer the phone,
- 3:34Speaker 1: like a real live person will answer the phone and
- 3:36Speaker 1: answer your questions. Or you can make it even more
- 3:38Speaker 1: simple go to first light dot com check out their stuff.
- 3:42Speaker 2: Fantastic materials.
- 3:46Speaker 1: And The Mediator podcast is brought to you by the
- 3:48Speaker 1: Media or TV show hosted by me Steve Vanella. I've
- 3:51Speaker 1: got one of our producers sitting right here next to me,
- 3:53Speaker 1: Jannis long Tong.
- 3:54Speaker 2: But tell us we'll get to him in a minute.

- 3:59Speaker 1: don't have it on your TA set, you really ought
- 4:00Speaker 1: to get it. It's actual real reality TV, which is
- 4:05Speaker 1: like the reality kind, the kind that they don't normally make.
- 4:09Speaker 1: And the network Sportsman Channel is great because they trust
- 4:13Speaker 1: us to make the show we want to make, and
- 4:14Speaker 1: they give their talent. I don't know if it's okay
- 4:16Speaker 1: to say talent when you're referring to yourself. They give
- 4:18Speaker 1: your talent the freedom to do real things in a
- 4:20Speaker 1: real way without having to dope it up into something
- 4:22Speaker 1: that's embarrassing to watch.
- 4:23Speaker 2: That's a note I made to myself, but it's totally true.
- 4:27Speaker 1: If you don't get Sportsman Channel and you ought to,
- 4:29Speaker 1: you can still find all the meat Eater. You can

- 5:06Speaker 1: For a hunting and fishing podcast, This one's really integrated
- 5:09Speaker 1: because the person you're hearing talking right now is not
- 5:11Speaker 1: only a woman, She's Korean, right American Korean American Helen
- 5:16Speaker 1: Show the most integrated broadcast you're ever gonna hear about hunting.
- 5:23Speaker 2: What else? What else do I want to cover? Yeah?

- 5:35Speaker 1: What we're gonna be talking about? And like I said,
- 5:37Speaker 1: I have two Ken Kruth and Ryan Callahan from First
- 5:39Speaker 1: Light or here, Jannis but tell Us from the med
- 5:42Speaker 1: Eater team is here, Helen Chow is here, and Helen
- 5:46Speaker 1: Tell what you just did for the first time.
- 5:47Speaker 5: Today fly fishing. For the first time.
- 5:49Speaker 1: Helen Show went for fly fishing. It's as like today
- 5:52Speaker 1: we watched an otherwise honest person get corrupted because Helen
- 5:57Speaker 1: Show was up until today like a meat slayer.
- 6:01Speaker 5: Yeah, pretty much.
- 6:02Speaker 2: Helen fished in order like Helen went out to fish.
- 6:05Speaker 1: She used to go out to fish in order to
- 6:08Speaker 1: kill fish and eat them with a spinning round. You
- 6:12Speaker 1: like to sur you like to serve fish. You like
- 6:15Speaker 1: to fish, you want to you fish. She likes to party,
- 6:18Speaker 1: she likes to party on boats. She likes to fish.
- 6:21Speaker 1: She likes to fish on party boats. She used to
- 6:22Speaker 1: go out and was a fish killer. And today she
- 6:26Speaker 1: was corrupted right here and catch him and went on
- 6:29Speaker 1: an outing that was meant to be to catch fish,
- 6:33Speaker 1: to poke holes in fishes faces for fun and then
- 6:38Speaker 1: let them go. So Helen became a fly fishing catch
- 6:43Speaker 1: and release angler today.
- 6:45Speaker 6: I don't know if you become one, if you go once,
- 6:48Speaker 6: were you dabbled in it, it was the introduction was.
- 6:51Speaker 1: She was lured to the dark side of catching release
- 6:54Speaker 1: angling today right here and catch him.
- 6:55Speaker 2: I was with her. I caught a fish and let
- 6:57Speaker 2: him go. I caught he was. I caught him an accident,
- 7:00Speaker 2: but I called him let him go.
- 7:02Speaker 1: And that's one thing I want to talk about today
- 7:03Speaker 1: is the thing that's for plex meal whole life. And
- 7:05Speaker 1: I've said on both sides of defense is and I
- 7:07Speaker 1: packed this room with fly fishermen, is what like I
- 7:11Speaker 1: want to talk about why do something like what is
- 7:14Speaker 1: it with fly fishing? Because we all the fly fishing
- 7:16Speaker 1: is you know, technically right catch if I'm wrong. The
- 7:20Speaker 1: real only different like to define fly fishing would be
- 7:22Speaker 1: the fly the lure is delivered by the weight of the.
- 7:25Speaker 2: Line, right, yep.
- 7:27Speaker 1: And on spin fishing, the lure is delivered by its
- 7:32Speaker 1: own weight when you cast. Yeah, but there's massive amounts
- 7:36Speaker 1: of cultural bs. There's like massive, like massive amounts of
- 7:39Speaker 1: like cultural and ethical stuff has been laid over.
- 7:42Speaker 2: What's the difference between spin fishing and fly fishing.
- 7:44Speaker 4: Yes, and that's something we covered today. Like I look
- 7:47Speaker 4: at fly fishing as a means to catch fish.
- 7:50Speaker 2: This is Ryan Callahan talking.
- 7:51Speaker 4: That's it, right, And there is just like you said,
- 7:57Speaker 4: there are massive amounts of opinion and chunks of like
- 8:03Speaker 4: nostalgia heaped upon how you fly fish. But for me,
- 8:09Speaker 4: it is a means to catch fish.
- 8:11Speaker 2: The fish you ever caught on a fly rod?
- 8:13Speaker 4: No, No, not at all.
- 8:15Speaker 2: What was the first fish you caught?
- 8:16Speaker 4: M I am. I would think it's a rainbow.
- 8:21Speaker 2: Because you grew up Montanna. Yep, Yeah, you caught them
- 8:24Speaker 2: on what a worm?
- 8:27Speaker 3: Man?
- 8:27Speaker 4: You know? We used to My mom used to have
- 8:30Speaker 4: us round up grasshoppers out of the garden. We'd take
- 8:33Speaker 4: a bobber a hook and float it down. Prior Creek
- 8:37Speaker 4: on the Crow Indian Reservation outside of Billings Yep, and
- 8:42Speaker 4: catch a lot of.
- 8:43Speaker 1: That's Prior Creek, like the Prior Mountains. It has some
- 8:45Speaker 1: wild horses in it.
- 8:45Speaker 4: D Yep, exactly, yep.
- 8:47Speaker 2: And you guys catch the would you thump them in
- 8:49Speaker 2: the head or would you We would keep.
- 8:51Speaker 4: Quite a few fish.
- 8:51Speaker 7: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 8:53Speaker 1: So right, I'm gonna get real technical about fly fish.
- 8:56Speaker 1: Remember Ryan was sharing me today. We're talking about all
- 8:58Speaker 1: the dues and don'ts of fly fish, all the ethics
- 9:00Speaker 1: of fly fish. And he was saying that around here,
- 9:04Speaker 1: guys are guys like we'll fish a dry fly. They
- 9:08Speaker 1: will not want to strip a wooly bugger, which is
- 9:11Speaker 1: apparently not how one fly fishes, but they will run
- 9:14Speaker 1: a nymph break, which is basically bobber fishing with a
- 9:16Speaker 1: fly route. I call a what do you strike indicator?
- 9:23Speaker 1: This is a fish.
- 9:24Speaker 2: You say, what do you guys bobber fishing? Well, no,
- 9:26Speaker 2: it's a strike indicator.
- 9:27Speaker 1: Yeah, that's what it is with my four year you know,
- 9:29Speaker 1: my four year old uses it to indicate when he
- 9:32Speaker 1: has a strike.
- 9:33Speaker 2: Yes, but we'll say it's a bobber.
- 9:36Speaker 3: You know, the funniest thing about that too, is that
- 9:38Speaker 3: they had all these different kinds of Now you're here,
- 9:40Speaker 3: you're here in Kent. Is it that all these different
- 9:42Speaker 3: kinds of bobbers for years? Right, they had these you know,
- 9:46Speaker 3: fuzzy things, this and that, and now guys just have
- 9:49Speaker 3: thrown the towel in. They use bobbers, real spring loaded bobber. Well,
- 9:54Speaker 3: it's a little bit lighter, so Castle, But it's.
- 9:56Speaker 4: Like you're referring to a thing.
- 10:00Speaker 3: Because it's the thing when it comes fishing. Yes, no,
- 10:07Speaker 3: I didn't use one, but I will use one. Heck,
- 10:09Speaker 3: I'm a fit. I like to catch fish. Man, I'm not.
- 10:12Speaker 3: I use indicators all the time. But you just got
- 10:15Speaker 3: back from doing today steelhead fishing. I was up on
- 10:18Speaker 3: the Klimat and it was exceptionally good.
- 10:22Speaker 1: Explain the whole thing like you're you had a seven
- 10:24Speaker 1: year dry spell or something like that.
- 10:25Speaker 3: Oh, I mean I have been. You know, we kind
- 10:28Speaker 3: of go regardless. It's a family reunion kind of deal.
- 10:32Speaker 3: So the fishing is a secondary program, so we just
- 10:34Speaker 3: kind of show up and if the fish are in,
- 10:36Speaker 3: the fish you're in. Traditionally, the fish are not in
- 10:39Speaker 3: this year.
- 10:40Speaker 1: Because the time of year, just because like the rivers
- 10:42Speaker 1: have because those rivers have been so degraded, and the
- 10:45Speaker 1: steelhead runs are not what they used to be.
- 10:46Speaker 3: In all that, all of the above, but you know,
- 10:48Speaker 3: with steelhead fishing, it's one of those things where you're
- 10:51Speaker 3: either you know and you quickly find this out, is
- 10:55Speaker 3: that you arrive and everybody there is like packing up,
- 10:58Speaker 3: saying you should have been here last week. Yeah, it's
- 11:00Speaker 3: the classic example. But this time, I was there last
- 11:03Speaker 3: week and you know this was traditionally, You're there this week.
- 11:07Speaker 3: It was the week and it was off the chart.
- 11:09Speaker 3: It was like as good a fishing as even the
- 11:13Speaker 3: old timers there fishing there for forty years said it
- 11:15Speaker 3: was the best fishing they had for forty years.
- 11:17Speaker 1: Now, I want to explain something real quick. So steelhead like,
- 11:21Speaker 1: there's a term anagamous, right, So anagamous means that a
- 11:26Speaker 1: fish lives in the ocean, or in the case of
- 11:29Speaker 1: the Great Lakes, lives in a lake and runs up
- 11:32Speaker 1: the river to spawn. And then the opposite of anagamous catadronists,
- 11:36Speaker 1: where a fish like a American eels catagransts, lives in
- 11:39Speaker 1: the river and goes out to the ocean to spawn.
- 11:40Speaker 1: But steel had a river run or like sea run rainbows.
- 11:43Speaker 1: It's a rainbow trout that you know he's hatched, he's born,
- 11:49Speaker 1: goes through his larval stage or whatever is his his
- 11:52Speaker 1: youth in the river, goes back out of the ocean,
- 11:54Speaker 1: turns into a big fatty, comes back out the river.
- 11:57Speaker 1: Guy like Kenton goes down there and catches one, and
- 11:59Speaker 1: it's not too big. And sometimes it's hard to tell
- 12:01Speaker 1: if you caught a rainbow or a steelhead.
- 12:03Speaker 3: Certainly on the or on the younger fish. You know,
- 12:07Speaker 3: a young steelhead will be you know, two pounds and
- 12:10Speaker 3: eighteen inches, which you know for a rainbow, it's a
- 12:13Speaker 3: great fish.
- 12:13Speaker 1: A giant fish and steelhead.
- 12:15Speaker 3: You know, they can get up to be huge. I mean,
- 12:17Speaker 3: you know, it's not uncommon for god to catch a
- 12:19Speaker 3: ten pound fish.
- 12:20Speaker 2: Was the biggest one you guys got.
- 12:22Speaker 4: Mmm.
- 12:22Speaker 3: I caught a nine pound, probably eight and a half
- 12:25Speaker 3: nine pounder on a drive fly, which was kinda.
- 12:27Speaker 1: And there's no doubt that that fish had been out
- 12:31Speaker 1: in the ocean for couple of years at that point.
- 12:33Speaker 3: I mean, he's just a full on, balls out steelhead,
- 12:35Speaker 3: full on and we were only fifteen miles off the coast.
- 12:39Speaker 2: Was he clipped? Was he a hattery fish?
- 12:40Speaker 3: No?
- 12:41Speaker 1: Wild?
- 12:41Speaker 2: Wild born fish?
- 12:42Speaker 4: Wild?
- 12:42Speaker 3: And in fact all the fish I caught pretty much
- 12:44Speaker 3: were wild.
- 12:46Speaker 1: You probably can't even thump those fish, right, you can't
- 12:49Speaker 1: keep them.
- 12:50Speaker 2: So that's legally enforced catching release exactly.
- 12:53Speaker 3: And then if you have that's and so one guy
- 12:56Speaker 3: on the trip caught a caught one with a clip
- 12:59Speaker 3: out of post flint fin, and we smoked it and
- 13:02Speaker 3: ate it and it was fantastic.
- 13:03Speaker 2: What is it really? Yeah, so it's got a clip fin.
- 13:06Speaker 1: If it's a hattery fish, you can keep it correct
- 13:08Speaker 1: and then you got stumped it yep.
- 13:10Speaker 3: Brought it in and it was probably a seven or
- 13:12Speaker 3: eight pound fish, filate it and then smoked it all
- 13:15Speaker 3: day the next day in the smoker.
- 13:16Speaker 1: You know, like ad a pose fin means it just
- 13:19Speaker 1: means extra fin, like a little fin on their back.
- 13:21Speaker 1: It's not clear what function it serves. Probably sort of
- 13:24Speaker 1: something they used to cut everybody's tonsils out. They didn't
- 13:26Speaker 1: think to function, So ada post means extra. My brother
- 13:29Speaker 1: Danny has an added post nipple. He's got a he's
- 13:33Speaker 1: got a third nipple.
- 13:34Speaker 8: Es they do.
- 13:38Speaker 3: All men's nipples are out of post.
- 13:40Speaker 1: Well, I know, but it's extra ada post. It's like
- 13:42Speaker 1: it's like the extra you know.
- 13:44Speaker 4: So oddly enough, he didn't show that you didn't bring.
- 13:48Speaker 1: That fish with them with the Malaski. So he's got
- 13:52Speaker 1: aniple snipples and fin like when you take a fish
- 13:56Speaker 1: if you want to know that he's a hattery fish.
- 13:58Speaker 1: They just snipped that little fin off. It's kind of
- 14:00Speaker 1: like it sits between the dorsal fin and the caudal fin,
- 14:04Speaker 1: which is the tailor's like this little thing.
- 14:05Speaker 3: On there and it's I don't know, floppy it does.
- 14:08Speaker 1: Yeah, I don't know.
- 14:09Speaker 2: It might be some kind of vestigial thing like it
- 14:11Speaker 2: used to do.
- 14:12Speaker 3: Something that doesn't do now, agreed.
- 14:14Speaker 1: So if you want to mark a hashy fish, just
- 14:17Speaker 1: snipped that thing. So what Canton here's saying is that
- 14:20Speaker 1: a wild fish. It was like hashed and reared in
- 14:23Speaker 1: the wild. His hands off and you know the way around.
- 14:28Speaker 1: If you could have killed one of those fish, probably
- 14:29Speaker 1: wouldn't killed it, though.
- 14:31Speaker 3: I would have kept one or two. I was already
- 14:34Speaker 3: had the smoker. I mean, I was kind of fired up,
- 14:36Speaker 3: and you know, I might as well filled it was
- 14:38Speaker 3: kind of small smoker. I was the goal was to
- 14:40Speaker 3: fill the smoker up. You know, if you're going to
- 14:42Speaker 3: run it, you might as well have the smoker.
- 14:45Speaker 1: One thing, I kind of like today we fished this
- 14:48Speaker 1: morning when Helen got corrupted, We're fishing for cutthroats.
- 14:52Speaker 2: I have kind of honestly quit killing cutthroats.
- 14:55Speaker 4: Yeah, I understand that in.
- 14:57Speaker 1: Rivers like like wild cuffs, because cutthroats as species, there's
- 15:00Speaker 1: certain species in this country that are just sort of
- 15:05Speaker 1: you know, they have highs and lows, but the just
- 15:08Speaker 1: the general atmosphere, they're generally going downhill, you know what
- 15:13Speaker 1: I mean, mule deer. It's like, you know what, like
- 15:16Speaker 1: like people are predicting in some ways, you can predict
- 15:18Speaker 1: the end of Muldier like they're sensitive and sure you'd
- 15:21Speaker 1: be like, oh, yeah, the golf course is always Muldery
- 15:23Speaker 1: on the golf course. But in general, like Muldier are
- 15:26Speaker 1: things will look great for Muldier right now. Number of
- 15:28Speaker 1: things like drought, habitat loss or you know a lot
- 15:31Speaker 1: of issues we could correct if we felt like it,
- 15:33Speaker 1: If we had the energy and the money and we
- 15:34Speaker 1: didn't care so much about being inconvenience, we.
- 15:37Speaker 2: Could fix the situation.
- 15:38Speaker 1: Cutthroats on Earth thing you're just like generally seem to
- 15:41Speaker 1: be going as even talk of putting cut some strains
- 15:44Speaker 1: and cuts on the danger species list. So I like
- 15:47Speaker 1: to go out and get them. And this guy like
- 15:48Speaker 1: fits hits the conundrum of what I'm talking about when
- 15:51Speaker 1: I want to talk about this on a podcast. Is
- 15:55Speaker 1: I like to go out and get them. Okay, I
- 15:58Speaker 1: don't want to kill them because I'm like, yea, you know,
- 16:01Speaker 1: I just feel the pain.
- 16:02Speaker 2: Of the cut throats.
- 16:02Speaker 1: So when I hold a cut through, I feel the
- 16:04Speaker 1: pain of the species, right, and I know that the individual,
- 16:07Speaker 1: like the essence of the species isn't wrapped up in
- 16:09Speaker 1: that little individual fish in my hand, But he sort
- 16:11Speaker 1: of stands for something that's in decline. So I see
- 16:14Speaker 1: him and I want to let him go. But what
- 16:16Speaker 1: is it that made me want to poke a hole
- 16:17Speaker 1: in his face? And realment? You know, because the dirty
- 16:22Speaker 1: secret about catching realist stuff?
- 16:24Speaker 2: Is there some mortality?
- 16:26Speaker 4: Yes, there absolutely is.
- 16:28Speaker 1: They don't like it depends on water temp. It can
- 16:30Speaker 1: be high as fifteen percent. What have you ever heard?
- 16:33Speaker 4: Yeah about there fifteen to twenty.
- 16:35Speaker 1: Yeah, I was tell me, so tell me the story
- 16:36Speaker 1: you telling me the other day about as a guide
- 16:38Speaker 1: how many fish you guys land today.
- 16:41Speaker 8: Well, there came a point when well into my guiding
- 16:45Speaker 8: career when I would start to.
- 16:46Speaker 2: Tell where you like, tell where you were guiding.
- 16:48Speaker 4: This is the weird deal.
- 16:49Speaker 1: The guy is talking right now. The guy that's talking
- 16:53Speaker 1: right now, Yiannis we tell Us works on Meat Eater
- 16:56Speaker 1: and the show knew my Are you still sick of
- 17:01Speaker 1: hearing this story? Jannis knew Joannis knew my wife in
- 17:07Speaker 1: high school. Okay, so my wife when we met. My
- 17:11Speaker 1: wife's like, the only person I ever knew who liked
- 17:13Speaker 1: to hunt like you guys do. Is this guy Yannis
- 17:14Speaker 1: Poutelus is just in when you're out together, like they're
- 17:16Speaker 1: paying attention to what you're talking about, just like you know, no, Joe,
- 17:21Speaker 1: but you saw this the one day I'm looking at
- 17:23Speaker 1: this magazine, Western Hunter magazine, which is of my favorite
- 17:25Speaker 1: hunting magazines, and I'm looking at Western Hunter and there's
- 17:27Speaker 1: a picture of kind of that iconic image of a
- 17:30Speaker 1: dude with a par of binoculars up in the mountains,
- 17:32Speaker 1: and it says like Yiannis Boutellis glasses the Colorado high Country.
- 17:35Speaker 1: And I right away call my wife at work. I'm
- 17:37Speaker 1: like Who's that dude? You ways talking about Yannis something
- 17:39Speaker 1: or another that likes to hunt. She's like, yannest Poutlus.
- 17:42Speaker 1: I'm like, I'm looking at that dude. He's in the
- 17:43Speaker 1: magazine right here in my lap. So we connect through
- 17:49Speaker 1: I think, through my wife's Facebook, and it turns out
- 17:51Speaker 1: that Jannis is living up Jannis's wife is a botanist
- 17:53Speaker 1: and they're spending some time up in Fairbanks, and so
- 17:55Speaker 1: we're going to up to do a dull sheep hunt
- 17:57Speaker 1: for the show, and we hired Janis to carry a backpack.
- 17:59Speaker 1: Everybody fell in love with them. And at the time,
- 18:02Speaker 1: you were guiding.
- 18:02Speaker 4: The easy thing to do.
- 18:04Speaker 2: Tommy is like.
- 18:05Speaker 1: Guide know from Colorado, guide Olk in Arizona, doing some
- 18:08Speaker 1: coups your stuff down to Mexico.
- 18:10Speaker 2: He started working with us in the bench.
- 18:12Speaker 1: We weued him away from all that, but he was
- 18:16Speaker 1: a trout guide for a long time and he's now
- 18:18Speaker 1: going to relate like an observation he had about how
- 18:22Speaker 1: catch re these fly fishermen can't quite have as bright
- 18:26Speaker 1: as a halo.
- 18:26Speaker 2: Hanging over their head as they might like spin it.
- 18:30Speaker 8: Yes, yes, because I felt like with seasoned, good anglers
- 18:35Speaker 8: that were competent and knew what they were doing when
- 18:40Speaker 8: the timing was right, when the fishing was hot.
- 18:42Speaker 9: You know.
- 18:42Speaker 4: Mostly it was for us the month of July.
- 18:44Speaker 8: This is central Colorado, the Eagle River, the Colorado River
- 18:47Speaker 8: there winning Fork down outside of Aspen, we could catch
- 18:52Speaker 8: forty to sixty fish sometimes per angler in an eight
- 18:56Speaker 8: hour float. You know, when the fish is hot, you
- 18:58Speaker 8: know your fish is hitting the dry every you know,
- 19:00Speaker 8: a couple of minutes, so you can rack up the numbers.
- 19:03Speaker 8: I never did it, but we definitely had guys that
- 19:05Speaker 8: would run the clicker. Really they really wanted to. They
- 19:09Speaker 8: were proud of their numbers, you know, so they would
- 19:10Speaker 8: sit there and click fish anyways.
- 19:14Speaker 2: Like a golf clicker or does orbs make a click
- 19:18Speaker 2: just I don't know.
- 19:20Speaker 1: Fish.
- 19:23Speaker 8: But when you get into those kind of numbers and
- 19:24Speaker 8: then you start talking about ten percent mortality rate, you know,
- 19:27Speaker 8: that's a lot of fish that die every day.
- 19:29Speaker 1: It's more than some dude down there with some snelled
- 19:31Speaker 1: hooks and a box of crawlers.
- 19:33Speaker 8: Well, as long as he is abiding by the rules.
- 19:36Speaker 8: In most places, it's too trout a day, you know.
- 19:38Speaker 8: So if he catches his two and leaves they only
- 19:41Speaker 8: killed two, and he probably he probably didn't poke too
- 19:43Speaker 8: many others, you know, where we would poke fifty and
- 19:47Speaker 8: you know for losing you know, five to ten of
- 19:49Speaker 8: those fish, a lot of dead fish.
- 19:52Speaker 1: And meanwhile, whenever he goes by, that dude down the
- 19:53Speaker 1: bank like something do at the bank, four or five
- 19:56Speaker 1: kids up and down the bank and diapers and he's
- 19:57Speaker 1: out there drowning crawlers.
- 19:59Speaker 4: Like I did a walking back the stringer that guy.
- 20:05Speaker 1: I helped one stringers with the clicker wire class.
- 20:10Speaker 8: I helped the Division Widlife do a dead fish count
- 20:13Speaker 8: once on the Eagle and we floated down. We didn't
- 20:15Speaker 8: really float, we like kind of crept skidded down the
- 20:18Speaker 8: Eagle River. Super low water, just going over rocks the
- 20:21Speaker 8: whole way, warm water temperatures. I think we picked up
- 20:24Speaker 8: twenty four dead fish. You can just see him on
- 20:26Speaker 8: the bottom of the river, you know.
- 20:28Speaker 1: White bellies up, red spots on their lip when you
- 20:31Speaker 1: look at him just counting them.
- 20:33Speaker 8: No, we were taking them, you know, I want to
- 20:36Speaker 8: say it's seventeen out of those fish. You could see
- 20:39Speaker 8: the handprint on them from where they were probably held
- 20:42Speaker 8: up for a picture. And you know, like you were
- 20:44Speaker 8: telling Jimmy today, well, your hands before you touch the trout,
- 20:47Speaker 8: and so many people don't know how to probably handle
- 20:49Speaker 8: a fish, and so then that metality ray goes even higher.
- 20:52Speaker 2: Yeah, we're talking about my little boy.
- 20:54Speaker 1: I wanted him to let a cot go, and so
- 20:56Speaker 1: I was telling, you know, get your hands wept for
- 20:58Speaker 1: you slipped on your belly. I know, like I tell
- 21:03Speaker 1: you that, I remember the exact instant. The instance I
- 21:05Speaker 1: ever in my life is an instance or instant. I
- 21:08Speaker 1: think I I feel like I already screwed that up.
- 21:11Speaker 1: I think I know the exact instance in my life
- 21:13Speaker 1: when I heard the term catchule these fishing, like my
- 21:16Speaker 1: old man, I'm not even going to get into why
- 21:19Speaker 1: this was okay, but in my old man's eyes, like
- 21:22Speaker 1: like bass season began on whatever.
- 21:25Speaker 7: Day, okay in Michigan.
- 21:27Speaker 1: Let's say it was June one, and his so we
- 21:30Speaker 1: all thought it began on mid that midnight rather than
- 21:33Speaker 1: look at it began on June one. We talked about
- 21:35Speaker 1: like beginning like the thirty first at midnight, and he thought, well,
- 21:38Speaker 1: as long as it's starting up at midnight, which was
- 21:40Speaker 1: tending the next day. We were allowed to fish that
- 21:43Speaker 1: day because we couldn't be up at midnight we had
- 21:46Speaker 1: to go to bed. So we were allowed to fish
- 21:48Speaker 1: and keep bass, but we wouldn't We couldn't cut him
- 21:51Speaker 1: until the next day when it was well into season.
- 21:54Speaker 1: So we had a live well. I grew up in
- 21:56Speaker 1: a lake and we had doc and we had a
- 21:58Speaker 1: live well that my dad made out of You know
- 21:59Speaker 1: those you when you had a grocery store and they
- 22:02Speaker 1: have those bread racks, like the big rolling racks, the
- 22:04Speaker 1: plastic perforated shells, they have all the loads of bread
- 22:08Speaker 1: on them. He just took a bunch of those and
- 22:09Speaker 1: zip tied them together into a live well and put
- 22:12Speaker 1: styrofoam around it. And we could fish bass all day
- 22:15Speaker 1: and put bass into the live well, and then season
- 22:19Speaker 1: would start, so the next day we'd gel o fish
- 22:20Speaker 1: I live flame.
- 22:23Speaker 2: I'm not telling you to do things.
- 22:25Speaker 1: I was trying to get and I was so I
- 22:29Speaker 1: was so little that I was still getting My parents
- 22:32Speaker 1: are still giving me baths. Okay, I remember that because
- 22:35Speaker 1: I caught a big, huge bass two docks down on
- 22:38Speaker 1: Gary's dock and hauled that thing home and was trying
- 22:43Speaker 1: to get it into the live well and dropped it,
- 22:45Speaker 1: and I was devastated. And I was so young that
- 22:47Speaker 1: my parents would give me baths. So remember that night
- 22:49Speaker 1: I was getting a bath. My mom was giving me
- 22:51Speaker 1: a bath, and I was still so distraught about the
- 22:54Speaker 1: bass I lost that my old man came in and
- 22:57Speaker 1: told me some people fish just to let him go
- 23:02Speaker 1: as a way to try to make me feel better.
- 23:05Speaker 1: And I later got into it. I got into like
- 23:07Speaker 1: and steal it and like, I don't mean this is
- 23:09Speaker 1: gonna bring down the steel that if you like to catch canon,
- 23:11Speaker 1: because in the Great Lakes we have a steelhead, like
- 23:13Speaker 1: the Great Eggs are like an aquarium where he turns,
- 23:15Speaker 1: like all the fish that were in there are kind
- 23:18Speaker 1: of like either not there or they're hurting. But then
- 23:21Speaker 1: we have great it's a great fishery of imported fish.
- 23:24Speaker 2: So we have great.
- 23:25Speaker 1: Yeah, we have all like almost all the Pacific salmon.
- 23:27Speaker 1: They tried to get Atlantics going. We have pinks, Coho, Shanook,
- 23:33Speaker 1: we got lake run browns like that.
- 23:35Speaker 2: There's tons of fish steelhead and we.
- 23:38Speaker 1: Used to count them and like for us, I remember
- 23:41Speaker 1: the best year I ever had my third year of college.
- 23:43Speaker 1: I think I landed forty four steelhead and I probably
- 23:46Speaker 1: thumped two of them.
- 23:47Speaker 2: I thump one of them when I.
- 23:48Speaker 1: Was dating this girl from Sarajevo because I wanted to
- 23:51Speaker 1: cook one for and I thump another one has some
- 23:53Speaker 1: other time. And we mostly just caught them just to
- 23:56Speaker 1: count them, you know, And you were bad ass. If
- 23:59Speaker 1: you could catch hundreds, you ahead and let them go.
- 24:01Speaker 1: And I would get where I look down on the
- 24:03Speaker 1: dudes doing it, and then I'm gonna quit talking mostly
- 24:06Speaker 1: after this. But so we got so into fly fishing
- 24:09Speaker 1: for steelhead, and then the steel that wasn't always good.
- 24:12Speaker 1: So then we got way interested in going to Mexico
- 24:14Speaker 1: and fish for bonefish. So then my brother and I
- 24:16Speaker 1: went down to Mexico to catch and release bonefish for
- 24:19Speaker 1: a month and we had fish bonefish all day and
- 24:22Speaker 1: let them go, and then in the evening we'd catch
- 24:25Speaker 1: other fish to eat. And I would, in my day
- 24:28Speaker 1: look more forward to going and trying to catch little
- 24:30Speaker 1: snappers and grunts and stuff out of the channels in
- 24:33Speaker 1: order to eat, because we just had a bag of rice,
- 24:35Speaker 1: a bag of dried rice, a bag of dried beans, water,
- 24:38Speaker 1: and we ate fish or we ate comic. So here
- 24:42Speaker 1: we are like, oh, we're not going to kill the
- 24:44Speaker 1: bonefish because some reason I can't explain. But we'll kill
- 24:47Speaker 1: all these other fish. We don't even know what the
- 24:49Speaker 1: hell they are. They're just fish, like, no idea what
- 24:51Speaker 1: this is? Like, Oh it looks like a edible fish.
- 24:54Speaker 1: We eat them and I eventually I just got dizzy
- 24:57Speaker 1: from all the like the.
- 25:00Speaker 2: What you know?
- 25:00Speaker 1: The why?
- 25:01Speaker 4: Why is this better than yes? And then I know something,
- 25:03Speaker 4: why is this we're saving?
- 25:05Speaker 1: I know some of the guys fish catch release and
- 25:07Speaker 1: they're like, well, I'm not going to kill these trow
- 25:08Speaker 1: I don't want to damage fishery, you know. Damn Well,
- 25:11Speaker 1: when they get done, they go to some restaurant order fish.
- 25:13Speaker 1: I don't know where it came from. It's like, what
- 25:15Speaker 1: about that fishery? Yeah, what's that fishery doing?
- 25:18Speaker 4: And we talked about this on the hunting side of
- 25:19Speaker 4: things all the time.
- 25:20Speaker 1: You know.
- 25:21Speaker 4: It's like I was hiking with the friend of mine's niece, uh,
- 25:26Speaker 4: taking her mushroom hunting. The spring came across an elk
- 25:29Speaker 4: calf and you ate it.
- 25:32Speaker 3: I bought it.
- 25:33Speaker 4: I landed it fairly, no, and she said, well, where's
- 25:39Speaker 4: the mall? But well, she's probably up in this meadow feeding.
- 25:43Speaker 4: We were kind of on the fringe of this big
- 25:45Speaker 4: meadow and she's, well, what's she would like, stay here
- 25:49Speaker 4: and help the calf. And I'm like, well, if the
- 25:53Speaker 4: bear comes by. He came by it, honestly, and she's like, whoa,
- 25:57Speaker 4: we should save it from the bear. It's like, well,
- 25:59Speaker 4: what makes the very or less valuable than that health calf?
- 26:03Speaker 4: You know, It's like and why is that up to
- 26:04Speaker 4: us to decide that?
- 26:05Speaker 7: Yeah?
- 26:05Speaker 2: Exactly?
- 26:07Speaker 4: The whole steelhead steelhead fly fishing is a great topic
- 26:12Speaker 4: because that's like to our very first conversation that we
- 26:15Speaker 4: made where it's like, this is how you fly fish.
- 26:18Speaker 4: But you look across the river at the guy with
- 26:21Speaker 4: the you know, single pin rod and he's running three
- 26:26Speaker 4: hundred yards of mono down the river on a slip
- 26:29Speaker 4: bobber and he's crushing fish. You're like, I bet I
- 26:33Speaker 4: can make this fly rod do that, yeah, and catch
- 26:36Speaker 4: more fish. And you know a lot of times I
- 26:40Speaker 4: call it like playing with house money, right, Like I'll
- 26:43Speaker 4: go out and I will nimp and run the bead, right.
- 26:47Speaker 4: And that's very controversial in fly fishing. We've talked about
- 26:50Speaker 4: that when we were up in BC.
- 26:51Speaker 1: Honestly, iad nymph.
- 26:53Speaker 4: No, you run a bead like you go to look
- 26:57Speaker 4: like an egg.
- 26:58Speaker 2: Yeah that's controversial. Yeah it's not honest.
- 27:01Speaker 4: It looks like it doesn't have an egg, or it
- 27:03Speaker 4: doesn't have a hook on it. Nobody tied it. It's artificial.
- 27:07Speaker 4: You take a toothpick, you jam it so it sits
- 27:10Speaker 4: above your hook.
- 27:11Speaker 1: So it's basically running a flasher. I don't really know
- 27:13Speaker 1: about it now. I remember you guys talk about this
- 27:15Speaker 1: when we were hunting a BC.
- 27:17Speaker 8: Yeah, it's no different than what the guys back in
- 27:19Speaker 8: Michigan do with running like a sack of eggs with
- 27:22Speaker 8: like a hook a couple of inches.
- 27:25Speaker 2: Like a stinger hook.
- 27:25Speaker 4: Yeah, same thing.
- 27:26Speaker 1: So you're saying that it's controversial in in I don't
- 27:30Speaker 1: want to say elite in like what's the best term
- 27:34Speaker 1: for like extreme, like the pure like okay, from the
- 27:37Speaker 1: purest fly fishing perspective.
- 27:39Speaker 4: I don't know it's.
- 27:40Speaker 1: Controversial to.
- 27:42Speaker 3: A traditionalist traditionalist.
- 27:45Speaker 2: Yeah, traditionalist won't run a beat.
- 27:47Speaker 3: I mean a true A lot of these traditionalists don't
- 27:50Speaker 3: won't even they're just all about dry fly, like even
- 27:53Speaker 3: even if you're even nymphs.
- 27:55Speaker 2: They don't want to catch a fish on the wet fly.
- 27:56Speaker 3: Yeah, it's just kind of it's it's you know, look
- 28:00Speaker 3: down upon.
- 28:00Speaker 4: But you can swing a wet flag.
- 28:02Speaker 8: One of the best arguments I ever heard, and it's
- 28:03Speaker 8: one of the oldest arguments out there was the late
- 28:06Speaker 8: Great Lee.
- 28:08Speaker 4: Wolf who famous fishing run exactly.
- 28:11Speaker 8: And well, and he tied up the Royal Wolf, which
- 28:15Speaker 8: is still a fish catching machine.
- 28:16Speaker 1: But it doesn't it doesn't replicate anything.
- 28:19Speaker 4: No, it's.
- 28:21Speaker 2: A map spinner.
- 28:22Speaker 4: Yes, let me finish my story.
- 28:25Speaker 8: His deal was why he wasn't into fishing because I
- 28:28Speaker 8: think during his fishing career five fishermen started to basically
- 28:33Speaker 8: fish below the surface and then you started using sinking
- 28:36Speaker 8: tip lines and adding weight and whatnot.
- 28:38Speaker 2: And he was when this was like what.
- 28:42Speaker 8: I'd have to guess, it'd be fifties, sixties substantiated moving on.
- 28:49Speaker 8: But he felt like by by doing that, you weren't
- 28:52Speaker 8: given like the fish just a day off, a time
- 28:57Speaker 8: to reprieve.
- 28:58Speaker 4: Like he felt like you should catch them when.
- 29:01Speaker 1: They want to eat on the surface. It's like you
- 29:03Speaker 1: give him a break. Here's the thing though, like I'm
- 29:10Speaker 1: gonna try, I'm gonna try to make a parallel.
- 29:14Speaker 2: I'n warn you, right, now it's not gonna work.
- 29:17Speaker 1: Okay. People will say, oh I hunt wow, And I like,
- 29:20Speaker 1: I like to hunt wild pigs. Okay, so I'm guilty
- 29:22Speaker 1: this because I hate If I could wave a magic
- 29:24Speaker 1: wand and make wild pigs be gone, I kind of
- 29:28Speaker 1: I'd be very tempted to wave the magic wand because
- 29:30Speaker 1: of the because of the damage that wild pigs do.
- 29:32Speaker 1: I mean they heard ground nesting birds. They cause a
- 29:36Speaker 1: lot of, you know, economic trouble for people, a lot
- 29:38Speaker 1: of ecological trouble. So if I could, if somebody, if
- 29:40Speaker 1: God came down from the skies and.
- 29:43Speaker 2: Says like, here's a stick. If you wave this stick, I.
- 29:44Speaker 1: Will eliminate the wild pick from North America, I would
- 29:47Speaker 1: carry that stick around seriously consider waving it as a
- 29:51Speaker 1: guy who likes the hut wild pigs.
- 29:52Speaker 2: But people are.
- 29:53Speaker 1: Like, oh, I we need to hunt wild pigs because
- 29:55Speaker 1: they're over populated. Okay, So if that's the case, why
- 30:00Speaker 1: they happy when they can't find a wild pick? But
- 30:02Speaker 1: they get bummed. They're like, it was a terrible day
- 30:04Speaker 1: we couldn't find a pick. But shouldn't you be glad
- 30:07Speaker 1: because this isn't the goal that there aren't or not
- 30:09Speaker 1: any around. So when I'm out wild picking on it,
- 30:11Speaker 1: I'm always like hoping to run into a bunch, but
- 30:13Speaker 1: it's supposed to be like, well, I kind of should
- 30:14Speaker 1: be hoping to not to, right because I want them
- 30:16Speaker 1: not be here. So if a guy really wants to
- 30:19Speaker 1: have something be super difficult, so you're gonna you're gonna
- 30:22Speaker 1: use something that you know it doesn't work well. You're
- 30:24Speaker 1: only gonna use dry flies. But then you're happy when
- 30:27Speaker 1: it works well. So you're happy if you get a
- 30:29Speaker 1: forty fish day, So what is it? Is it then
- 30:32Speaker 1: not challenging? And then doesn't it cease to be what
- 30:34Speaker 1: you wanted it to be, which is a challenging form
- 30:36Speaker 1: of fishing.
- 30:37Speaker 2: It just worked really great. You caught forty fish.
- 30:39Speaker 1: You outfished the dude throwing map spinners, You outfish the
- 30:42Speaker 1: dude throwing worms. So now you should throw it away
- 30:45Speaker 1: and start fishing worms because your dry fly works better
- 30:47Speaker 1: than that, and you want it to be challenging.
- 30:50Speaker 8: Answer that, well, there, but you know the time that
- 30:56Speaker 8: you get that day, you fish all year for a
- 30:58Speaker 8: couple of days like that.
- 31:00Speaker 4: It's like the gimme, you know, the gimme hunting when
- 31:03Speaker 4: you're like, oh, walk ten feet from the trailerhead and
- 31:06Speaker 4: there he was.
- 31:07Speaker 2: You're not gonna not shoot.
- 31:08Speaker 3: You don't go, you gotta shoot.
- 31:10Speaker 4: That was too easy. I didn't like that, you go.
- 31:12Speaker 4: I just spent twelve years, you know, swinging a fly
- 31:17Speaker 4: waiting for this day. Just spent twelve years hiking up
- 31:19Speaker 4: those mountains, and I'm definitely gonna take this. Gimme.
- 31:24Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 31:24Speaker 8: And I lived on a great drive fly fishing creek,
- 31:27Speaker 8: gor Creek Inville, Colorado for a year and in our
- 31:31Speaker 8: backyard door.
- 31:31Speaker 2: Creek, Gore Creek. Never heard of that one.
- 31:34Speaker 4: Exactly where is it?
- 31:35Speaker 8: And how great great on good golden medal and after
- 31:39Speaker 8: Lord Gore who just went through those mountains?
- 31:41Speaker 1: And oh he hired Jim Bridger is a guy exactly.
- 31:45Speaker 1: Jim Bridger got so sick of that guy shooting everything.
- 31:48Speaker 1: Jim bridgerd quit him.
- 31:49Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 31:50Speaker 1: He killed grizzlies in places they're on't grizzlies within five
- 31:53Speaker 1: hundred miles there. Now, he killed grizzly out by Glen Dive, Montana.
- 31:56Speaker 4: Yeah, you out of that country.
- 32:00Speaker 1: This dude had blood on his hands. He killed like
- 32:01Speaker 1: he's like he had a little tally talking about a
- 32:03Speaker 1: golf clicker. He's like two thousand bison, twelve hundred day. Yeah,
- 32:08Speaker 1: Bridger got sick of him anyways, Gore Creek, Gore, Krag,
- 32:10Speaker 1: your buddy Gore. Yeah, so I overread after It's like
- 32:16Speaker 1: an incandescent light bulb burning ex there.
- 32:20Speaker 8: And we noticed he had a great fishing hole, right
- 32:22Speaker 8: and every day we'd just be in there pounding them,
- 32:25Speaker 8: you know, they'd be in there rising, and we'd been
- 32:27Speaker 8: there just getting after as much as we could. And
- 32:29Speaker 8: eventually it was like, you know what, let's just sit
- 32:31Speaker 8: here and have it beer and watch these fish eat
- 32:33Speaker 8: like it's just as enjoyable. We don't need to catch
- 32:36Speaker 8: these fish again. It's you know, it's still your same
- 32:38Speaker 8: cutthroat buddy sitting in the same hole. And so you
- 32:42Speaker 8: don't always have to have those forty fish days, even
- 32:44Speaker 8: though the opportunity is there. You can catch a couple,
- 32:47Speaker 8: maybe a dozen, and then just sit on the bank
- 32:49Speaker 8: and enjoy yourself.
- 32:51Speaker 2: We let's talk to Ken. He just had a forty
- 32:52Speaker 2: fish day. How many steelhead did you catch?
- 32:54Speaker 4: A lot?
- 32:55Speaker 2: One hundred?
- 32:56Speaker 7: Yeah, probably how many?
- 32:57Speaker 1: You think you're dead right now, you know, exhaustion and
- 33:01Speaker 1: then take thousands of pictures of Jimmy Houston, the man.
- 33:05Speaker 3: Flop him of no, pretty gentle.
- 33:08Speaker 1: How many days he's trying to He's trying to stun them.
- 33:11Speaker 3: The whole with a nine weight too, So I could
- 33:13Speaker 3: definitely get pretty aggressive once they got close. Like it
- 33:16Speaker 3: wasn't like you know, some guys will go steal head
- 33:19Speaker 3: fishing with a five weight, you know, and then that's
- 33:21Speaker 3: when you really.
- 33:22Speaker 1: That fish is dog tired by the dog.
- 33:24Speaker 3: Tired because you know, you flip fish with the you know,
- 33:26Speaker 3: five weight would say five x or four x. You
- 33:29Speaker 3: have no way even when it gets close, think and
- 33:32Speaker 3: keep running on.
- 33:32Speaker 1: You know.
- 33:33Speaker 3: I was on a nine went with two x, so
- 33:35Speaker 3: even a bigger fish, if it got to the shallow water,
- 33:37Speaker 3: I'd kind of Jimmy Houston, it close, get it loose,
- 33:40Speaker 3: and get it out. But I have no idea, you know.
- 33:42Speaker 3: The whole time we were there, we saw one fish
- 33:45Speaker 3: floating down river upside down. It was still breathing. We
- 33:49Speaker 3: turned it over. It had the out of postcun We
- 33:50Speaker 3: grabbed it and that was one of the ones that
- 33:52Speaker 3: we smoked. How many did you catch all together as
- 33:55Speaker 3: a team, Like, out of the four of us, we
- 33:57Speaker 3: probably caught I don't know. One hundred, two hundred fish.
- 34:00Speaker 4: And how many day days was that?
- 34:02Speaker 10: Five?
- 34:02Speaker 3: Five days of fish, five days of fishing. Probably more
- 34:06Speaker 3: than that. You know some guys, some guys fish more
- 34:08Speaker 3: than others.
- 34:09Speaker 4: That's awesome. You uh, you got you. You kind of
- 34:13Speaker 4: got the the white whale too, you got.
- 34:15Speaker 7: The everywhere I'm at, Hey, Dan, I.
- 34:19Speaker 1: Just called my brother who's a fishing He's like, he
- 34:22Speaker 1: works with fish. Can you take a picture? Can you
- 34:25Speaker 1: tell me right now? We're recording something right now. So
- 34:29Speaker 1: you're you're you're not live, but you're close to it.
- 34:33Speaker 1: Why when you why do fish die when you if
- 34:36Speaker 1: you overplay a fish? Just real quick? Is it like
- 34:46Speaker 1: something do with lactic acid build up?
- 34:49Speaker 10: Yeah, I'm guessing lack the gas it build up and
- 34:51Speaker 10: probably oxygen that in the in the muscles.
- 34:56Speaker 1: What have you ever heard any ideas about how many
- 34:59Speaker 1: what percentage of steal head die after people catch him
- 35:01Speaker 1: and let him go?
- 35:04Speaker 10: Direct distrust studied on it and it's but it varies
- 35:08Speaker 10: by uh, water temperature and fish sty versus fly and
- 35:15Speaker 10: you know a number of them.
- 35:17Speaker 1: So if I'm sitting with a guy who just caught
- 35:19Speaker 1: a hundred steelhead, what do you think, how many do
- 35:21Speaker 1: you think he just killed?
- 35:23Speaker 10: Off the top of my head, Yeah, i'd say if.
- 35:29Speaker 1: Thirty, whoa blood on your hands, I'm gonna let you go.
- 35:34Speaker 1: I'll talk to that. That's I want to check it out.
- 35:37Speaker 1: This dude's a fish biologist. He's an ichthyo so he
- 35:41Speaker 1: does like ichthyology, but he does aquatic invertebrates at a
- 35:45Speaker 1: for a university. He's full on PhD. Great school of
- 35:50Speaker 1: minds kind of guy.
- 35:51Speaker 4: Right, So you're saying he knows what he's talking about.
- 35:55Speaker 1: He knows a lot about fish, but he likes to
- 35:57Speaker 1: catch steehead let him go.
- 35:59Speaker 4: Mm hmmm. Who knows what?
- 36:06Speaker 2: Can like?
- 36:06Speaker 1: Sell smoke? Steal it on a bag truck next to
- 36:09Speaker 1: the taco stage.
- 36:10Speaker 3: I got plenty of bigger smoker. I could have got
- 36:13Speaker 3: fired up.
- 36:15Speaker 2: Now, Oh no, Helen, let me okay. As someone who's like,
- 36:21Speaker 2: how many years you been.
- 36:21Speaker 5: Fishing, maybe like seven eight seven night?
- 36:26Speaker 1: What did you like?
- 36:27Speaker 10: So?
- 36:28Speaker 1: What was your feeling? Let's say you had cost some
- 36:29Speaker 1: fish day and let them go.
- 36:31Speaker 7: Would you have.
- 36:32Speaker 2: Felt Yeah, let's say you caught a whole bunch and.
- 36:35Speaker 7: Let him go.
- 36:35Speaker 1: Would you felt bombed or would you felt like no,
- 36:37Speaker 1: this was just its own experience. It really had nothing
- 36:40Speaker 1: to do with It had nothing to do with catching
- 36:43Speaker 1: fish to eat. It was just its own thing. We're
- 36:45Speaker 1: enjoying a certain place, doing a certain thing that people
- 36:48Speaker 1: have been doing it for a long time. I'm putting
- 36:49Speaker 1: words of your mouth, but like, what was your like?
- 36:51Speaker 1: How did you look?
- 36:51Speaker 5: I don't know.
- 36:52Speaker 6: I think if I had hooked it, if I had
- 36:54Speaker 6: gotten it and it died, I would have probably felt
- 36:57Speaker 6: a little bad. Yeah, I mean for my entertainment that
- 37:01Speaker 6: I'm going to go and fish, I don't know. But
- 37:03Speaker 6: if I had released it, I think I wouldn't. I
- 37:06Speaker 6: feel like it's a separate experience. Like fly fishing is
- 37:10Speaker 6: so far and different than fishing for meat.
- 37:13Speaker 1: To me, it's like why is it?
- 37:15Speaker 5: I don't know.
- 37:16Speaker 6: Like when I go fishing in New York, it's like
- 37:19Speaker 6: I'm on a mission, you know. I want to go out,
- 37:21Speaker 6: I want to have a good time, but ultimately I
- 37:23Speaker 6: want to come home to fill my freezer.
- 37:25Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 37:26Speaker 1: I went fishing with Helen and her boyfriend one time,
- 37:28Speaker 1: and they come out there with one condiments for eating
- 37:34Speaker 1: raw fish, And they come out there with a wire
- 37:37Speaker 1: that when when they kill a fish, they cut the
- 37:39Speaker 1: fish's tail off and run the wire through the fish's spine,
- 37:43Speaker 1: which does the fish well, if you ever been to
- 37:44Speaker 1: a slaughterhouse and watch them slaughter cattle, they hit the
- 37:47Speaker 1: cattle the captive bolt gun, then they cut its throat
- 37:50Speaker 1: and then they electrocute it to relax as flesh.
- 37:52Speaker 2: And when you run that wire through that.
- 37:56Speaker 1: Fish's spine, he relaxes in a way that all the
- 37:59Speaker 1: rocks in the world banged against his head are not
- 38:01Speaker 1: going to do.
- 38:02Speaker 8: What and.
- 38:05Speaker 6: Wow, it's a Japanese process called I Got.
- 38:11Speaker 7: It's like.
- 38:13Speaker 1: Through a fish's backbone, insert in his tail, and that
- 38:15Speaker 1: fish just melts. He's like, I give up.
- 38:21Speaker 5: You can really taste the difference though, I'll.
- 38:23Speaker 1: Tell you when I used to ice trap snap turtles,
- 38:25Speaker 1: that is amazing.
- 38:26Speaker 2: Ice trapped stamp turtles and sell them, and you'd cut
- 38:28Speaker 2: the head off the.
- 38:29Speaker 4: Turn you're snapping turtles.
- 38:30Speaker 1: This I'm bringing this full circle. I bringing his back
- 38:34Speaker 1: around a joke because hurry up, I want to get back.
- 38:38Speaker 1: I'm detracted. But anyways, this is gonna enhance what Helen's
- 38:41Speaker 1: going to talk more about. Is you chop a turtle's
- 38:44Speaker 1: head off. You grab grabbed the channel lock pried his head,
- 38:47Speaker 1: pull the head out, cut off of the axe, hang
- 38:49Speaker 1: them up by the tail, and you'd have to wait
- 38:51Speaker 1: six seven hours sometime before you could clean that turtle
- 38:54Speaker 1: because she was clenched up and clawn right. I was
- 38:57Speaker 1: down in Guyana hunting with amer Indians, so it's like
- 39:01Speaker 1: you know, here we'll say like Native American Indians, South
- 39:03Speaker 1: America's Amorendians were hunted with Amerindians. They caught a big
- 39:07Speaker 1: river turtle. First thing they did was run. They just
- 39:10Speaker 1: whittled a big long stick, ran it through that thing's backbone,
- 39:14Speaker 1: and that thing was ready to eat and the meat
- 39:16Speaker 1: was super tender. It wasn't flexed, and they cooked that
- 39:19Speaker 1: turtle right in his own shell. And they did the
- 39:22Speaker 1: same thing. And that's kind of like I was like, wow,
- 39:24Speaker 1: that's crazy. But then the next time I saw that
- 39:25Speaker 1: have was when you guys were doing that to Poorgy's.
- 39:32Speaker 6: They put him in like an ice like a saltwater
- 39:33Speaker 6: ice bath.
- 39:34Speaker 2: But they do after you, after you destroy their spinal.
- 39:38Speaker 6: Column and spike their brains, spiked their head like you
- 39:41Speaker 6: take like a like a gaff and you know, basically
- 39:45Speaker 6: spike it in its head, which it stunts it.
- 39:48Speaker 1: Then you then you wi. Yeah, what's what's the discipline called?
- 39:52Speaker 4: And how many steps J I M.
- 39:56Speaker 5: I think it's like a three step process. John would
- 39:59Speaker 5: be better.
- 40:01Speaker 6: Spiked the head first, and then you cut the like
- 40:05Speaker 6: towards the tail, but not not the end. It's like
- 40:09Speaker 6: you have a little meat left and you kind of
- 40:10Speaker 6: just fold it over and then you stick a like
- 40:12Speaker 6: a like a shark wire or something.
- 40:16Speaker 1: It cashed.
- 40:18Speaker 5: After you do that, you basically run all the way
- 40:20Speaker 5: to its head.
- 40:21Speaker 4: I will catch a schnook at some point off that
- 40:24Speaker 4: and yes, I will.
- 40:25Speaker 5: Do this, and then you put it in an ice bat.
- 40:27Speaker 4: I have to find some things to practice on.
- 40:30Speaker 6: They did a chef blind test blind taste tests for this, right,
- 40:34Speaker 6: and I could taste it. So we went out once
- 40:36Speaker 6: and we had zip ties and we it was like
- 40:38Speaker 6: it was like a science experiment we had like this
- 40:40Speaker 6: one was just like the Montalk way where they just
- 40:42Speaker 6: you know, take a like a bat and just like
- 40:45Speaker 6: hit it in its head ice So we did it
- 40:47Speaker 6: that way, then we did it you know way, then
- 40:50Speaker 6: we did it like you know, all these different ways,
- 40:52Speaker 6: and then we actually it wasn't even the same day.
- 40:54Speaker 6: It was like twenty four hours or forty eight hours afterwards,
- 40:57Speaker 6: and then the chef's you know, we put it onto
- 40:59Speaker 6: plates and and they actually picked the ekj Ma one,
- 41:02Speaker 6: which was incredible.
- 41:03Speaker 2: Yeah, that day we did that was funny.
- 41:05Speaker 1: It's like a lot of times you'll see a bunch
- 41:08Speaker 1: of sports, you know, on a guideboat, and you'll see
- 41:10Speaker 1: where they're flaying the fish and you hear them all
- 41:12Speaker 1: going like, oh no you go with Like the people
- 41:14Speaker 1: are like, oh, you go ahead and take them. No, no,
- 41:16Speaker 1: if you want them.
- 41:16Speaker 2: You want to take them.
- 41:17Speaker 1: You're like, dude, I guarantee you that in one year,
- 41:20Speaker 1: all that fish is gonna be freezer burned and getting
- 41:22Speaker 1: thrown in the garbage.
- 41:23Speaker 2: Yeah, but we ate half our fish before we left.
- 41:29Speaker 1: Man, that was fun. That was funk. Yeah.
- 41:33Speaker 6: There's a YouTube video of a guy in like Japan
- 41:36Speaker 6: doing it, but not your boyfriend. He there's a video somewhere.
- 41:40Speaker 2: Yeah, but he wrote about it, right.
- 41:42Speaker 6: Yeah, he wrote it a piece about it for the
- 41:44Speaker 6: food magazine Lucky Peach. So and it has broken down,
- 41:47Speaker 6: so it's more than he definitely more than three steps.
- 41:50Speaker 1: He's a good cook.
- 41:51Speaker 5: You know.
- 41:51Speaker 2: New York City fish murder.
- 41:54Speaker 4: Cool, Yeah, I mean you have thought the most fish
- 41:57Speaker 4: blood on her hands?
- 41:59Speaker 11: Yeah, well, what's the deal with Like with fly fishing,
- 42:05Speaker 11: it seems like everyone's all about numbers instead of like
- 42:07Speaker 11: because when we when we fish.
- 42:09Speaker 6: In Long Island, it's like, oh, I got this like
- 42:11Speaker 6: dormat you know, double digit fluke, you know, like the
- 42:15Speaker 6: size and versus like I mean, like obviously you can
- 42:21Speaker 6: all do a regulation so you can only keep a
- 42:22Speaker 6: number of I'm not like I caught fifty porgies today.
- 42:27Speaker 4: It's like one good fish. Like you'll go on like
- 42:31Speaker 4: the Missouri or you know, the Yellowstone or something that
- 42:37Speaker 4: has the potential to be like there's a big fish
- 42:39Speaker 4: in there. People catch them all the time. Yeah, it
- 42:42Speaker 4: hasn't been me, you know, And a lot of days
- 42:45Speaker 4: like you're like, okay, I'm gonna throw like a big
- 42:49Speaker 4: streamer or do something that I've told myself is the
- 42:53Speaker 4: way to catch a big fish. And it's a one
- 42:57Speaker 4: fish day or a zero fish day, you know. Yeah, yeah,
- 43:03Speaker 4: you know.
- 43:03Speaker 1: And one of my I once wrote something about how
- 43:07Speaker 1: I was like imagining the world, like if we could
- 43:09Speaker 1: go back to the beginning of human existence and have
- 43:12Speaker 1: all the same conditions and let everything run forward, again,
- 43:18Speaker 1: just see what would happen, right. I think a lot
- 43:21Speaker 1: of the things that happened would happen all over again.
- 43:24Speaker 7: Okay.
- 43:25Speaker 1: I think that we would probably a lot of people
- 43:27Speaker 1: would develop sort of monogamous relationships. Okay, Like there's all
- 43:32Speaker 1: these things of human behavior that I feel like if
- 43:34Speaker 1: you just backed it up and let it go again,
- 43:36Speaker 1: the same thing could happen.
- 43:37Speaker 2: We would hunt, we.
- 43:38Speaker 1: Would fish, right, we'd probably form government language would have
- 43:42Speaker 1: happened again. I think there's a couple of things. Wearing
- 43:44Speaker 1: your pants down around, blow your ass.
- 43:49Speaker 2: Would not happen again. And I don't think catch release
- 43:51Speaker 2: fly fishing would happen.
- 43:52Speaker 1: Again, because I feel that like when people and I
- 43:59Speaker 1: do it too, so I'll talk about me too. I
- 44:02Speaker 1: think it's it's like you're it's like some wiring got
- 44:05Speaker 1: crossed in your head where you feel that as a human.
- 44:08Speaker 1: And I'm saying this about myself as a human, like
- 44:11Speaker 1: I'm supposed to be out extracting, Okay.
- 44:14Speaker 2: I'm supposed to be out hunting and fishing.
- 44:16Speaker 1: Because for however long you want to define human history,
- 44:19Speaker 1: you want to go back seventy five thousand years, fifty
- 44:21Speaker 1: thousand years, there's always you know, everybody basically says some
- 44:24Speaker 1: last one hundred thousand years whatever, anatomically modern humans, we've
- 44:28Speaker 1: been doing these things, hunting, fishing, and I think people
- 44:31Speaker 1: are kind of like but I'm a little civilized, like
- 44:33Speaker 1: I'm not cool with the death, but I have to
- 44:37Speaker 1: do the act, like I have to do it.
- 44:41Speaker 4: You're doing it for pleasure at that point.
- 44:43Speaker 2: Yeah, but I just don't see where it came from.
- 44:46Speaker 1: It's like golf with which.
- 44:47Speaker 4: Where did cave art come from?
- 44:49Speaker 3: Right?
- 44:50Speaker 4: Like part of it was I want to express myself.
- 44:52Speaker 4: The other part of it is it's pretty brutal out there.
- 44:56Speaker 4: I'm probably gonna waste some time in here, makes me,
- 44:59Speaker 4: makes me pay. It's like it's it's a form of entertainment.
- 45:05Speaker 2: Right, It somehow could be superfluous to survive.
- 45:09Speaker 4: And you couldn't tell me that. These guys were like, Okay,
- 45:12Speaker 4: I know I can catch a bunch of these things.
- 45:14Speaker 4: I'm gonna kill all of them, even though I know
- 45:17Speaker 4: I can't eat them, right. I mean, those people at
- 45:22Speaker 4: the time be like, boy, there's a lot of you know,
- 45:24Speaker 4: this fish in this area. This you know, rabbit population
- 45:28Speaker 4: is really good here. I'm gonna take a couple and
- 45:31Speaker 4: come back later. Right, So in a fishing scenario, they're
- 45:35Speaker 4: catching fish in this spot, be like, boy, it's fun
- 45:38Speaker 4: catching fish, right, catch him right.
- 45:41Speaker 3: I'm not going to your own question. I think that
- 45:43Speaker 3: human beings are just hardwired to do exactly that, Like
- 45:47Speaker 3: you know, they're like getting it on. That's like hardwired
- 45:50Speaker 3: in and so fishing correct, But it's it's the same
- 46:01Speaker 3: kind of deal, just hardwired in. Like this is fun.
- 46:04Speaker 3: Why it's fun? I have no idea, it's just it's fun.
- 46:08Speaker 2: It's just fun.
- 46:10Speaker 1: Also in a friend of mine is an evolutionary biologist,
- 46:12Speaker 1: and uh, we were talking about that, like the benefit,
- 46:17Speaker 1: like the evolutionary benefit of of sex being enjoyable is
- 46:21Speaker 1: that people will continue to procreate outside of intent. You know,
- 46:27Speaker 1: my wife's pregnant right now with the kid. We weren't
- 46:29Speaker 1: exactly planning on.
- 46:31Speaker 3: So you're preaching to the choir.
- 46:36Speaker 1: So she was saying, like, I wonder and she doesn't hunt.
- 46:40Speaker 1: We took her out spearfishing in the Behinda was a
- 46:42Speaker 1: good spearfishing and after she's like, why is that fun?
- 46:45Speaker 1: You know, she's like, I wonder if it's not fun,
- 46:49Speaker 1: because it was like advantageous for it to seem fun
- 46:52Speaker 1: to us. Then it would mean like even beyond desperation,
- 46:56Speaker 1: that we'd be out there hammering it, like out there fishing,
- 46:59Speaker 1: out there, honting like that.
- 47:01Speaker 2: If you draw some kind of pleasure from it.
- 47:03Speaker 1: It's not an onerous task, but you'd have it be
- 47:07Speaker 1: the Yeah, I'm just out there, and even though I'm
- 47:08Speaker 1: not absolutely out of food, I'm out there doing it
- 47:11Speaker 1: anyway because it's just my it's what I enjoy doing. Like,
- 47:14Speaker 1: there's possibly there is some huge adaptive advantage to us
- 47:18Speaker 1: thinking it's fun to catch fish.
- 47:19Speaker 3: It is huge because, for instance, if you didn't enjoy
- 47:23Speaker 3: it that much, you wouldn't do it that much, and
- 47:25Speaker 3: when it got truly difficult, you probably might not be
- 47:28Speaker 3: that good at it. Whereas the guys that really enjoyed
- 47:31Speaker 3: it almost to the point of, you know, overdoing it
- 47:34Speaker 3: when things got really difficult, they were the only guys
- 47:37Speaker 3: that were actually catching fish and the only guys that
- 47:40Speaker 3: you know, we're eating enough to go pro create.
- 47:43Speaker 2: Dude, if you wrote that, you would get it published
- 47:45Speaker 2: in like science or Nature.
- 47:48Speaker 1: I'm sure I like it.
- 47:49Speaker 3: That's evolution.
- 47:52Speaker 1: I always want to end this right now. I'm sure
- 47:55Speaker 1: it's you want it up. I want to back it
- 47:58Speaker 1: up and end it earlier and then steal that idea.
- 48:01Speaker 2: So cut that out.
- 48:03Speaker 1: I'm gonna do it. We'll be right back and I'm
- 48:07Speaker 1: gonna say what Ken just said.
- 48:11Speaker 3: You know, but that's that's how it works, right, the
- 48:15Speaker 3: push comes to shove. If the guy is totally obsessed,
- 48:19Speaker 3: he's going to be just a little better.
- 48:21Speaker 6: So let's say one of he's obsessed and just like
- 48:25Speaker 6: just completely horrible fishing.
- 48:27Speaker 2: Already know that guy.
- 48:29Speaker 1: There's no one I'm going to say his name, but
- 48:30Speaker 1: I fish with him. I fish with them the most,
- 48:33Speaker 1: Like the most obsessed fisherman I know is the worst fisherman.
- 48:36Speaker 6: I know.
- 48:36Speaker 1: That's it's like a curse.
- 48:38Speaker 3: All we can hope says he makes god awful love
- 48:42Speaker 3: to the woman who doesn't like fishing, but if she did,
- 48:45Speaker 3: would be extraordinary at it, and then you.
- 48:47Speaker 2: Create this dude is the worst angler.
- 48:50Speaker 1: And I feel a lot of times when people are
- 48:53Speaker 1: bad hunting fishing, I feel that what they lack is
- 48:56Speaker 1: kill her instinct, like what my brother would say, they
- 49:00Speaker 1: lack girl the girl. It's like they like her and
- 49:04Speaker 1: they don't have like what it tastes like.
- 49:06Speaker 2: I'm gonna kill it.
- 49:07Speaker 1: People, You're not gonna kill it. Like today, when I'm fishing,
- 49:11Speaker 1: I'm not like, if I see a fish come up
- 49:14Speaker 1: to grab ive, comes up to Papa dry fly, I don't.
- 49:19Speaker 1: In the moment when it's happening, the moment when my
- 49:21Speaker 1: mind's registering his presence, i'm lifting the rod, I'm not thinking,
- 49:25Speaker 1: oh you, sweet fish, I love you. I'm more inclined
- 49:28Speaker 1: to say, oh you. You know what I mean. It's
- 49:31Speaker 1: like I have an antagon even though I love the
- 49:33Speaker 1: essence of the thing. In that moment, I feel this
- 49:37Speaker 1: is gonna come off weird. I feel a very distinct
- 49:41Speaker 1: sport like hatred for that fish. If he doesn't grab
- 49:45Speaker 1: my fly right, if I hook him, then I like
- 49:47Speaker 1: him again. If he comes off, I don't like him.
- 49:49Speaker 3: But if you go to set the hook and there
- 49:52Speaker 3: and your line goes in a pile, expletives follow, and
- 49:55Speaker 3: I hate.
- 49:57Speaker 2: I hate the fish.
- 49:57Speaker 1: It's like I'm like, I hope something bad have you
- 50:01Speaker 1: and you projected and someone and someone does what's that word.
- 50:04Speaker 2: Again to your spine?
- 50:09Speaker 3: Is that I was just.
- 50:10Speaker 1: Gonna do like ekg like like like echo kilo hell.
- 50:15Speaker 4: Unto her credit, did not mutter, I think any expletives
- 50:19Speaker 4: on the river today while.
- 50:22Speaker 5: No I was very upset with myself, but.
- 50:25Speaker 4: We were watching the little trout eat bugs next to
- 50:28Speaker 4: her fly and I was the one being like, ye
- 50:32Speaker 4: written hurt.
- 50:33Speaker 3: But now that being said, so you're you're you're. You
- 50:36Speaker 3: take an example of somebody that is doesn't have the gur.
- 50:41Speaker 3: But I think that the girl in general can possibly
- 50:44Speaker 3: be learned when it comes to hunting. I mean it
- 50:47Speaker 3: acquired ger perhaps when you first go out with it,
- 50:50Speaker 3: can you bottle it? I know when you first go
- 50:53Speaker 3: out hunting with a bow, though, and you know, you
- 50:56Speaker 3: get your first couple close counters with like a big bull,
- 51:01Speaker 3: it's kind of I don't know, you're kind of sometimes
- 51:05Speaker 3: like is this guy? It's can I shoot? You know
- 51:08Speaker 3: what I mean? And then after all you get rattle,
- 51:11Speaker 3: I think, and it makes you freaks you out. But
- 51:13Speaker 3: then after a while, you know you I wouldn't say
- 51:15Speaker 3: you hopefully you never get comfortable. That situation is always exciting,
- 51:18Speaker 3: but it goes from kind of like Wow, this is
- 51:21Speaker 3: great to like, how am I going to get a
- 51:22Speaker 3: narrow in that out?
- 51:23Speaker 4: Yeah?
- 51:23Speaker 1: You know that's the thing I've said a lot about, Uh,
- 51:26Speaker 1: particularly bohunt. But when you pull back on an animal,
- 51:30Speaker 1: you have to know that that thing's gonna die. Because
- 51:33Speaker 1: if you're like I hope, I hope, I hope this
- 51:35Speaker 1: doesn't you know what I mean, will happen. But the
- 51:37Speaker 1: guy who could be like, I will now kill you. Yeah, well,
- 51:41Speaker 1: more like it's more that's more of a successful attitude
- 51:44Speaker 1: than sort of being like, we let's see what happens.
- 51:46Speaker 3: Yeah, agreed, agreed, And that's probably why you know, hey,
- 51:52Speaker 3: you know, there's probably some synergy here between rifle versus
- 51:56Speaker 3: arch bow and and uh spinning or bait fishing versus.
- 52:00Speaker 6: I thought, you know, I don't know, no, tell no,
- 52:07Speaker 6: I mean I've never I've personally never gone hunting, but
- 52:10Speaker 6: I imagine fly fishing is like bow hunting, you know,
- 52:15Speaker 6: versus like bait fishing or jigging or something.
- 52:19Speaker 2: It's like, I want to edit the podcast.
- 52:22Speaker 3: Here's the similarity, here's the similarity. And that with archery,
- 52:26Speaker 3: you have got to practice a lot. Yeah, you got
- 52:29Speaker 3: to practice, you know, and and the practice becomes enjoyable,
- 52:32Speaker 3: like you know, leading up to the season, your practice
- 52:35Speaker 3: every day for a few months at least, and it
- 52:38Speaker 3: becomes part of your daily ritual. You enjoy the shooting
- 52:41Speaker 3: of the bow, right, Whereas fly fishing, I think a
- 52:44Speaker 3: lot of times, even if it flysh fishing is not
- 52:46Speaker 3: that great, you kind of enjoy the actual act of casting,
- 52:50Speaker 3: whereas I'm not sure if it's the same with you know,
- 52:53Speaker 3: chuck and bait.
- 52:54Speaker 1: No, and I'll tell you what we just got back
- 52:56Speaker 1: from our place in Alaska. Bounce and a pound lead
- 52:58Speaker 1: and two hundred and fifty feet of water for halib
- 53:00Speaker 1: it right, And you don't enjoy that, right, It's not like,
- 53:03Speaker 1: oh I love lifting this pound let up and bouncing
- 53:05Speaker 1: on the bottom. But I'll tell you what you do,
- 53:07Speaker 1: like all that thing goes. Yes, he's on there and
- 53:12Speaker 1: he's smoking line out and you have no idea he's
- 53:15Speaker 1: two hundred pounds or that sounds awesome, you know what
- 53:18Speaker 1: I'm telling you.
- 53:18Speaker 2: But yeah, there's no finesse, there's no art.
- 53:20Speaker 7: You know.
- 53:21Speaker 3: And to the largest thing I think that fly fishing,
- 53:23Speaker 3: you know, you got to practice without even fishing generally speaking,
- 53:27Speaker 3: for at least you know, a week or two.
- 53:29Speaker 7: I want to.
- 53:30Speaker 1: Interject to say though, that Rihanna's had My my four
- 53:33Speaker 1: year old was fishing with us this morning. My four
- 53:35Speaker 1: year old. What I mean, he looked the fish on
- 53:37Speaker 1: this like the first time he ever laid his hand
- 53:38Speaker 1: on the fly rod.
- 53:39Speaker 4: Yeah, four year old.
- 53:41Speaker 1: It took him a long time to catch fish on
- 53:43Speaker 1: his on his coat spinning reel, even though he smokes.
- 53:48Speaker 1: You know, that's actually this one I wanted to bring
- 53:50Speaker 1: up because my little boy, all my little boy knows
- 53:54Speaker 1: about like at home when we eat, well, we just
- 53:57Speaker 1: eat game, you know, wild fish, wild game at home.
- 54:00Speaker 1: So he's always every dight when we eat, we're talking
- 54:02Speaker 1: about where it just came from. You know, Daddy killed
- 54:04Speaker 1: this thing and here's what happened. He's always talking about
- 54:07Speaker 1: the moose that ran daddy over, which Ryan Callens knows
- 54:10Speaker 1: that moose.
- 54:11Speaker 4: Well, we're all still eating on that moon.
- 54:13Speaker 1: He always knows these stories. He always knows these stories,
- 54:17Speaker 1: and he's never heard anyone because he's young enough or
- 54:21Speaker 1: I know, what is his influences are, you know, I mean,
- 54:23Speaker 1: like he's not off with kids that I don't know,
- 54:25Speaker 1: and you know, I know who he hangs out with.
- 54:30Speaker 1: I take him fishing and he we're at my mom's
- 54:33Speaker 1: the lake I grew up on, and we're on my
- 54:34Speaker 1: mom's pond toon boat and he catches five bluegills. I mean,
- 54:37Speaker 1: he's like making his own casts, reeling in like legit
- 54:43Speaker 1: catches five blue gills. We go home and I scale
- 54:47Speaker 1: the fish and when I'm flaying blue is I just
- 54:51Speaker 1: cut their head off? Fir's just easier, you know, I
- 54:53Speaker 1: get a cleaner flay. So I come in by their
- 54:57Speaker 1: not packs, yeah, pectoral fins. No, no, no, that was
- 55:01Speaker 1: to fin up by the right below the gill plate.
- 55:03Speaker 7: I don't know. I can't remember.
- 55:06Speaker 1: So it was a cut in there, cut the head off,
- 55:08Speaker 1: and then I flam so as I go in and
- 55:10Speaker 1: cut the heads off, and I got the heads of
- 55:13Speaker 1: one pound the bodies in our pile, and he's up
- 55:16Speaker 1: on a chair next to me helping. He was like
- 55:19Speaker 1: legitimately honestly upset, and it came from an organic place,
- 55:24Speaker 1: because this isn't something that's something like, No, I know
- 55:26Speaker 1: that no one has said to him it's bad to
- 55:27Speaker 1: kill fish. All he's ever heard is it is good
- 55:30Speaker 1: to kill fish. As he was upset, and you could
- 55:34Speaker 1: tell he thought he didn't he didn't articulate this way,
- 55:36Speaker 1: but he looked at those fish.
- 55:37Speaker 2: He told me, I don't like that you put their
- 55:39Speaker 2: heads like that and their.
- 55:41Speaker 1: Bodies like that. He didn't say it, but it was
- 55:44Speaker 1: like it was disrespectful, and he said and he said
- 55:48Speaker 1: this exactly. He expressed regret that we killed those fish
- 55:52Speaker 1: and we should have put him back in the lake.
- 55:55Speaker 4: So where did that come from?
- 55:57Speaker 1: It came from somewhere. And I'm telling you what it's like.
- 55:59Speaker 1: It's not he's not saying something that someone else.
- 56:02Speaker 3: Well, I could have come from finding Nemo or something.
- 56:05Speaker 1: He's never seen that movie.
- 56:06Speaker 3: He didn't kill Nemo just then.
- 56:08Speaker 1: No, it wasn't that, man. I'll tell you. I'm sensitive
- 56:11Speaker 1: that because, well, you know, I always called killer whales
- 56:13Speaker 1: killer whales. You're supposed to come now like a lot
- 56:15Speaker 1: of like soft. He's called him Orcus, but Orcs just
- 56:17Speaker 1: some like it's like a Greek word that means whale.
- 56:20Speaker 1: They used to call him whale killers. Because now you
- 56:22Speaker 1: can't call him killer whales. I feel think it is
- 56:23Speaker 1: a bad reputation. I always called killer whales. When name
- 56:25Speaker 1: my kid comes back, he's like, you know, you got
- 56:26Speaker 1: it all wrong. I was down at the Seattle Aquarium.
- 56:29Speaker 2: It's an Orca.
- 56:31Speaker 1: So now he always calls him Orcus. So he's cited
- 56:33Speaker 1: to me where he heard contrary information. No one, I'm
- 56:37Speaker 1: telling you, no one has told that kid.
- 56:39Speaker 4: Well they killed kid that you can't kill call it
- 56:41Speaker 4: killer whale, killer whale, you know, and are re hurting
- 56:45Speaker 4: the whales feelings? What do you mean give him a.
- 56:47Speaker 1: Bad Apparently, I don't know. I have no idea what
- 56:49Speaker 1: I think.
- 56:50Speaker 4: They're like badasses?
- 56:51Speaker 1: Right, yeah, Orca just means whale. It's the stupidest thing
- 56:54Speaker 1: in the world. But like some of my nearest dearest
- 56:56Speaker 1: friends are like, oh, it's an orca. One day I
- 56:58Speaker 1: was with these guys speaking all am, I getting way
- 57:01Speaker 1: too firefield. Can I tell a quick story? Okay, I
- 57:04Speaker 1: was working on a book about Buffalo, and everybody knows
- 57:06Speaker 1: buffalo's a bison. So the American bison, the American buffalo.
- 57:09Speaker 1: It's not actually a buffalo. Blah blah blah. People been
- 57:11Speaker 1: calling them buffalo. Hell, what long have they been calling
- 57:13Speaker 1: them bison?
- 57:13Speaker 2: I've never said to someone in my life buffalo and
- 57:17Speaker 2: had them be confused about what I was talking about.
- 57:20Speaker 1: Okay, on this content anyways, I was with these guys
- 57:24Speaker 1: when I was working on my book. I spent some
- 57:25Speaker 1: time with these guys. Buffalo Field Campaign. Okay, so they're
- 57:29Speaker 1: like are they're pretty radical environmentalists who have a certain
- 57:35Speaker 1: vision for American buffalo American bison, and their group's called
- 57:38Speaker 1: the Buffalo Field Campaigns. So their group uses the name
- 57:40Speaker 1: that's not the scientific proper name for the species, which
- 57:43Speaker 1: is bison. I'm standing with this guy outside of Yelston
- 57:46Speaker 1: Park and Gardner, Montana, and.
- 57:47Speaker 4: I see.
- 57:49Speaker 7: An anelope.
- 57:51Speaker 1: Okay, I go, hey, check out those antelope over there.
- 57:53Speaker 1: It's actually prong Horney says to me. I'm like, dude,
- 57:56Speaker 1: you you work for a group that calls something the
- 57:58Speaker 1: wrong name. Drove me nuts, man, I can tell that
- 58:02Speaker 1: bother you say antelope or prong horn.
- 58:07Speaker 4: Just like everything under this prairie go speed goes, speed
- 58:12Speaker 4: go prairie go. Yeah, prong horn antelope.
- 58:15Speaker 1: I combine him.
- 58:16Speaker 2: Now.
- 58:16Speaker 1: I found I found myself doing like the weirdest thing.
- 58:18Speaker 4: Like it's anelo capra American.
- 58:21Speaker 1: I always say prong horn anilo.
- 58:22Speaker 2: I was like why, I just say, what were we
- 58:29Speaker 2: talking about?
- 58:29Speaker 1: Before I got off on that.
- 58:30Speaker 4: Jimmy Oh that he had like a natural and I
- 58:34Speaker 4: got to say, my experience with folks from Michigan who fish,
- 58:38Speaker 4: this kid has like gone way off the reservation because
- 58:42Speaker 4: all the Michiganers, I know, like they filled the freezer.
- 58:46Speaker 7: Yeah, that's that's the program.
- 58:47Speaker 2: Well, he told me.
- 58:48Speaker 3: Now.
- 58:48Speaker 1: I gave him a not a stern talking to, but
- 58:52Speaker 1: he told me this morning, he goes, I get it now.
- 58:54Speaker 1: It's like I get it now. You know, I don't
- 58:57Speaker 1: know what that means. But he's like, now, it's okay.
- 58:59Speaker 1: But when he let that go today, he said, I'm
- 59:02Speaker 1: quoting him. He said, there you go back in the wild.
- 59:08Speaker 3: Okay, I gotta visit something. So you guys eat bass
- 59:12Speaker 3: out there.
- 59:13Speaker 1: Large mouth. I eat him as a political statement.
- 59:15Speaker 3: What does it taste like? I tried to cook his
- 59:17Speaker 3: bass one time in a bund And let me tell
- 59:19Speaker 3: you all.
- 59:20Speaker 1: My fishing mentor, who grew up about six houses down
- 59:23Speaker 1: with me, was a man named John Gary. He fished
- 59:25Speaker 1: so much and cast so many fishing he sold like
- 59:27Speaker 1: a black market fish sales. He's dead now, and right
- 59:33Speaker 1: before he died, I was over his house and he
- 59:35Speaker 1: offered to sell me. He's like, I'll make a deal.
- 59:38Speaker 1: I'll sell you my house, everything in it, down to
- 59:41Speaker 1: my shoes, lake front property.
- 59:44Speaker 2: Said I'll save this house for seventy five thousand dollars.
- 59:46Speaker 7: You give me the money now.
- 59:47Speaker 2: The only deal is I live here till I die,
- 59:49Speaker 2: and when I die, you have everything down to my shoes.
- 59:52Speaker 3: Why why do you want to keep your shoes after
- 59:54Speaker 3: he dies?
- 59:54Speaker 1: He's saying what he's saying that I would be buying
- 59:57Speaker 1: everything he's ever owned, and you agree with.
- 59:59Speaker 2: The He could get the money now and continue to
- 1:00:02Speaker 2: live in his house till he died.
- 1:00:03Speaker 1: And I didn't take him up on that deal. I
- 1:00:04Speaker 1: should have ran down.
- 1:00:05Speaker 7: To a bank.
- 1:00:06Speaker 1: Anyways, heat a lot of bass, and large mouth bass,
- 1:00:09Speaker 1: and he soaked him in milk and grilled him whoa
- 1:00:12Speaker 1: whoa skin on.
- 1:00:14Speaker 2: Took large mouths, soaked him in milk, grilled him, skin.
- 1:00:18Speaker 4: Down, scale them.
- 1:00:20Speaker 1: No, no, because what you would do then he'd put
- 1:00:23Speaker 1: the fish on the grill, skin down, scales on. He'd
- 1:00:27Speaker 1: cook it till it was till it got you know,
- 1:00:28Speaker 1: they get loose in their skin. He then take the
- 1:00:30Speaker 1: fish and flip it back over onto its skin so
- 1:00:34Speaker 1: din't get stuck to the grill. Finished it like that,
- 1:00:37Speaker 1: and he would eat them all the time like that.
- 1:00:38Speaker 3: What it tastes like?
- 1:00:40Speaker 2: Muddy fish?
- 1:00:41Speaker 3: Yeah?
- 1:00:41Speaker 4: What is the milk thing?
- 1:00:42Speaker 1: Because it helps the money. This I'm telling you it does. Man,
- 1:00:44Speaker 1: how PEPSI challenge it any day of the week. I
- 1:00:47Speaker 1: sell catfish and milk better than like salt water.
- 1:00:51Speaker 7: I don't know.
- 1:00:52Speaker 2: I can't answer that question.
- 1:00:53Speaker 3: It's an interesting thing that you brought up because a
- 1:00:55Speaker 3: lot of the people that live by the ocean and
- 1:00:58Speaker 3: fish in the rivers don't even keep any fish unless
- 1:01:01Speaker 3: they catch him in the within like five miles, because
- 1:01:04Speaker 3: the ocean fish are ten times better fish. That's what
- 1:01:06Speaker 3: they say.
- 1:01:06Speaker 1: They say, I don't even like, no, it's like, that's
- 1:01:09Speaker 1: not even debatable.
- 1:01:10Speaker 3: They taste it. They're like, they catch big forty pounds
- 1:01:13Speaker 3: salmon going back. It's like, I don't even And if
- 1:01:16Speaker 3: it's like more than two miles or whatever, you know,
- 1:01:19Speaker 3: they're off the away out of the ocean. Forget it.
- 1:01:22Speaker 1: Well, with salmon, it makes sense because when the salmon
- 1:01:24Speaker 1: goes to enter, he's in the best shape he's ever
- 1:01:26Speaker 1: gonna be in it for his entire life. Right when
- 1:01:29Speaker 1: he leaves the ocean, when he's at the mouth, right
- 1:01:32Speaker 1: if he's still actively feeding near river mouth, he's never
- 1:01:34Speaker 1: gonna be in a better shape. He's got a higher
- 1:01:36Speaker 1: fat content, he's ever gonna have the rest of his life.
- 1:01:39Speaker 1: And the minute he enters that river, he's degraded. He's
- 1:01:42Speaker 1: going downhill and it tastes like mud. They just get
- 1:01:45Speaker 1: worse and worse they get, you know, the priests, and
- 1:01:47Speaker 1: they got like fungus and lesions all over them. But yeah,
- 1:01:52Speaker 1: but now I eat large mouth just as a political statement.
- 1:01:56Speaker 1: Every time I kill large mouth and flat, I like
- 1:01:57Speaker 1: to put it on social media, you know, because I
- 1:02:03Speaker 1: know I'm not damaged. I'm not damaging a fishery when
- 1:02:06Speaker 1: I when I thump a large mouth, it's not.
- 1:02:09Speaker 6: But how often do you guys eat like trout or
- 1:02:11Speaker 6: like I mean, because people are eating.
- 1:02:13Speaker 1: I just a trout. I had a trout the day after.
- 1:02:17Speaker 1: I had a rainbow the day after me. And it's
- 1:02:20Speaker 1: here contracted trick and osis.
- 1:02:22Speaker 3: You guys both got trick from bear.
- 1:02:29Speaker 1: So anyways, we ate some trout and grayling. One of
- 1:02:33Speaker 1: them was called on a flypole.
- 1:02:35Speaker 4: A fly rod called.
- 1:02:40Speaker 1: As a political statement, I called a flypole.
- 1:02:43Speaker 5: Do I think the.
- 1:02:44Speaker 6: Ideal thing would be to like, I mean, just because
- 1:02:47Speaker 6: of my like water access to learn how to fly fish,
- 1:02:50Speaker 6: but salt water, so then you can target like blueish
- 1:02:54Speaker 6: stripe bass and stuff on the fly, because to me,
- 1:02:57Speaker 6: it's like a progression, like as a fisher, you know,
- 1:03:00Speaker 6: in whatever, it's like, Okay, you can bait fish, you
- 1:03:03Speaker 6: can jake, you can do it. But it's like, what's
- 1:03:05Speaker 6: the next step, you know, like the next challenge. It's
- 1:03:07Speaker 6: like fly fishing is to me like much more challenging,
- 1:03:11Speaker 6: you know, obviously because I'm the beginner.
- 1:03:12Speaker 2: But let's man, you cannot make a statement like that.
- 1:03:15Speaker 2: You no, Okay, go up to it.
- 1:03:18Speaker 1: Go up and show me how easy it is to
- 1:03:22Speaker 1: go mooch like a big, thirty forty pound king.
- 1:03:24Speaker 5: I guess it's because I was so simple.
- 1:03:27Speaker 2: You just well, I don't even know what you do.
- 1:03:28Speaker 2: It's like, it's not it depends on the situation.
- 1:03:31Speaker 4: You just put your bait over the side.
- 1:03:33Speaker 1: Okay, to my mom my mom's dock. Go stand at
- 1:03:36Speaker 1: my mom's dock with a beadhead pheasant tail when the
- 1:03:39Speaker 1: bluegills around the beds, and tell me how tough it
- 1:03:41Speaker 1: is the hook him on a fire rod.
- 1:03:43Speaker 4: You can't keep them.
- 1:03:44Speaker 5: I guess it defends.
- 1:03:45Speaker 1: It depends on the situations.
- 1:03:48Speaker 4: But those situations where you cannot keep them off, I
- 1:03:52Speaker 4: change things up because I'm like, okay, I know I
- 1:03:55Speaker 4: can catch them this way. Really, yeah, I do all
- 1:03:58Speaker 4: and when we fish steel ahead, yeah, you know, I'm like, okay,
- 1:04:02Speaker 4: I know for a fact today I can catch a
- 1:04:05Speaker 4: fish this way. Yeah, but if they're that hungry to
- 1:04:08Speaker 4: eat everything I threw in this way, I bet I
- 1:04:11Speaker 4: can tie this on and catch a deep you know,
- 1:04:14Speaker 4: catch a few fish.
- 1:04:15Speaker 1: So when you're when you're like hammering ducks on a
- 1:04:17Speaker 1: great day, I like the hunt ducks, do you ever
- 1:04:19Speaker 1: start shooting left handed? No?
- 1:04:21Speaker 7: No, I do not.
- 1:04:22Speaker 2: Do you ever start like pouring out half the shot
- 1:04:24Speaker 2: out of your shot shell and putting back.
- 1:04:25Speaker 7: To each other shooting that?
- 1:04:27Speaker 1: No? I do not, cuh, just curiously.
- 1:04:29Speaker 4: But the thing I'm eating those two.
- 1:04:31Speaker 3: You know, typically you would if you were hammering and
- 1:04:35Speaker 3: switch to a twelve gauge instead of twenty, I mean
- 1:04:37Speaker 3: a twenty instead of twelve.
- 1:04:38Speaker 2: You would.
- 1:04:39Speaker 1: Yeah, I don't know anybody's ever done that in the history.
- 1:04:41Speaker 7: Of my life.
- 1:04:42Speaker 3: That's common out here.
- 1:04:44Speaker 1: Perhaps you don't get out with the twelve and it's twenty.
- 1:04:46Speaker 1: You'd be like if I start really knocking them.
- 1:04:48Speaker 3: Down and the switching twenty, you're like, the hunting's been good.
- 1:04:50Speaker 3: Its good. Last time I'm shooting with the twelve, I'm
- 1:04:52Speaker 3: shooting with the twenty nine. There are some other reasons
- 1:04:55Speaker 3: the twenty is significantly quieter.
- 1:04:56Speaker 1: So probably because your head hurts from shooting your twelve.
- 1:05:01Speaker 4: Hurts.
- 1:05:01Speaker 8: So good? All right, Right, we watching a movie last
- 1:05:06Speaker 8: night with a guy shooting ducks.
- 1:05:07Speaker 1: With black power.
- 1:05:09Speaker 2: That is respect Like, I respect that, right, but.
- 1:05:11Speaker 8: Why is he doing that for the challenge?
- 1:05:13Speaker 1: I respect that.
- 1:05:14Speaker 4: It's fun.
- 1:05:15Speaker 1: Yeah, well it's just like fun, say with this dude
- 1:05:18Speaker 1: hunts ducks with So this is like last night, right.
- 1:05:24Speaker 1: The Hunting film tour sponsored by first Light sponsored by
- 1:05:28Speaker 1: as a fundraiser for back country hunters and anglers. I
- 1:05:30Speaker 1: spoke there briefly a couple minutes. I had five minutes
- 1:05:32Speaker 1: to explain to people why public land is important, why
- 1:05:36Speaker 1: back country is important.
- 1:05:37Speaker 4: Which is typically like five minutes subject.
- 1:05:39Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, I tried to cover as quickly as probably
- 1:05:42Speaker 1: toold be six minutes to explain a little bit about
- 1:05:44Speaker 1: why we need more of it around or not more.
- 1:05:45Speaker 1: There's no way to get more. You don't get more
- 1:05:47Speaker 1: of it. Why we need to hang on to what
- 1:05:49Speaker 1: we have. And there was a film there about a
- 1:05:52Speaker 1: dude who made a little wetland and we're shooting exposed
- 1:05:57Speaker 1: hammer black powder at ducks. You're saying, if I could
- 1:06:00Speaker 1: go out like a limit seven, if I can get
- 1:06:02Speaker 1: two with this, it's better to me than getting seven
- 1:06:04Speaker 1: with something else. I just thought, he don't like duck
- 1:06:05Speaker 1: meat that much. Now I'll tell you the fly fisherman
- 1:06:10Speaker 1: I'm going to respect. And again, I keep on it
- 1:06:12Speaker 1: because there's two things. There's a guy out there's like
- 1:06:14Speaker 1: a bunch of guys out there right now, super annoyed
- 1:06:17Speaker 1: because they're probably the meat slains people on the planet
- 1:06:19Speaker 1: who like fish fly rods, right, They probably fish strivers
- 1:06:22Speaker 1: that fly rod thump every fish they get, eat them
- 1:06:24Speaker 1: all day long. They don't think that there's this dichotomy
- 1:06:27Speaker 1: where it's like, oh, you fish with spin reel, so
- 1:06:31Speaker 1: you must be a meat guy, and you fish with
- 1:06:33Speaker 1: a fly rod, so you must not. Because there's a
- 1:06:35Speaker 1: hell of a lot of guys a fish lardmouth bass
- 1:06:38Speaker 1: with spinning tackle and never kill a fish ever. Right,
- 1:06:40Speaker 1: So it's not like it's not a dichotomy. But I'm
- 1:06:42Speaker 1: talking about general trends, particularly in the Western US anyway.
- 1:06:45Speaker 1: So there's that I should clear up. I want to
- 1:06:47Speaker 1: meet the guy and yanis alluded to this today. I
- 1:06:49Speaker 1: want to meet the guy who not just cuts the
- 1:06:51Speaker 1: barb off his hook, but cuts the whole hook off
- 1:06:57Speaker 1: before the bend, because he's so peer of heart, so
- 1:07:02Speaker 1: pure of mind that he just wants to see that
- 1:07:04Speaker 1: fish come up and lip the thing.
- 1:07:07Speaker 8: But we can make a phone call where we would
- 1:07:09Speaker 8: not get a hold of Ted himself, but I can
- 1:07:13Speaker 8: get a hold of probably the guide who guides Ted.
- 1:07:16Speaker 1: I guess you don't mean Ted Nugent, no.
- 1:07:19Speaker 8: Way cooler than Ted Nugent, But this dude's he could
- 1:07:25Speaker 8: darn be close to ninety years old, and he's five
- 1:07:27Speaker 8: fish to the Eagle River for you know, thirty years.
- 1:07:29Speaker 4: Yeah, and floats all the time.
- 1:07:32Speaker 8: And yeah, on those good days when they're just like
- 1:07:35Speaker 8: I was saying, every couple of minutes, you're getting a
- 1:07:37Speaker 8: hit on the dry he catches a couple, kind of
- 1:07:39Speaker 8: gets the tug out of the way, and then just
- 1:07:41Speaker 8: starts clipping the hose.
- 1:07:42Speaker 9: That right, because he just loves the He feels like
- 1:07:45Speaker 9: it's getting in his way to fight net release and
- 1:07:49Speaker 9: all that out of the fun he's getting out of
- 1:07:50Speaker 9: casting and watching those fish eat that dry hell, and how.
- 1:07:54Speaker 7: Long we've been going for.
- 1:07:57Speaker 5: Our eight minutes?
- 1:07:59Speaker 9: What them?
- 1:08:01Speaker 1: Since I got you? Since I got the first light?
- 1:08:03Speaker 7: Boys sitting right here?
- 1:08:04Speaker 2: What's uh?
- 1:08:05Speaker 1: What's cool on the horizon? Are you gonna make some
- 1:08:09Speaker 1: Are you gonna make a coat that lures in bull out?
- 1:08:13Speaker 4: We work on the sense in the office is you
- 1:08:16Speaker 4: come in there and it just.
- 1:08:20Speaker 3: Yeah, it's terrific in that office.
- 1:08:22Speaker 1: Know what's going on?
- 1:08:23Speaker 4: So you got I do, I do really appreciate you, uh,
- 1:08:26Speaker 4: you know, mentioning that we do try to keep it
- 1:08:28Speaker 4: live person in the office.
- 1:08:30Speaker 3: When's this gonna go on? When's this going to be
- 1:08:32Speaker 3: on the rd?
- 1:08:33Speaker 10: Know?
- 1:08:33Speaker 7: Whenever I feel like it?
- 1:08:34Speaker 3: Like how long a week?
- 1:08:37Speaker 1: I don't know, Why does that matter? Just tell us
- 1:08:39Speaker 1: what's happening?
- 1:08:39Speaker 7: Cool?
- 1:08:42Speaker 1: Oh because you got because your word? Okay, yeah you're safe.
- 1:08:44Speaker 1: I mean what you tell me? At what point? Yeah
- 1:08:46Speaker 1: you can yeah, tell me at what point?
- 1:08:49Speaker 3: Two weeks?
- 1:08:50Speaker 2: Okay, you're fine?
- 1:08:51Speaker 6: Yeah, I mean, you know, we don't if it's something
- 1:08:54Speaker 6: that you don't want us to release, you know, you
- 1:08:55Speaker 6: won't do it.
- 1:08:56Speaker 3: That's fine. We're just talking about you guys. Swimwear coming
- 1:09:00Speaker 3: out with new our new camouflage pattern really yep.
- 1:09:04Speaker 4: Yep.
- 1:09:04Speaker 3: It was designed by a guy that uh, an ex
- 1:09:07Speaker 3: army guy who was just super super into Camo and
- 1:09:10Speaker 3: we started development maybe I don't know, well over a
- 1:09:13Speaker 3: year ago and we've were coming out with a new
- 1:09:17Speaker 3: cameo pattern that we've just for First Light.
- 1:09:20Speaker 7: I'm excited to see it.
- 1:09:21Speaker 1: Yeah, that's a good idea though.
- 1:09:23Speaker 4: Yeah it is.
- 1:09:24Speaker 3: You know, we've really liked a lot of the existing
- 1:09:26Speaker 3: cameo patterns and they certainly work great for certain environments,
- 1:09:30Speaker 3: but we kind of wanted to take some of the
- 1:09:31Speaker 3: technology of a few different patterns and kind of blend
- 1:09:35Speaker 3: them into one and kind of make a cameo pattern
- 1:09:38Speaker 3: that worked well in a bunch of different environments.
- 1:09:41Speaker 2: Does it have a name?
- 1:09:42Speaker 3: Fusion?
- 1:09:43Speaker 7: Really?
- 1:09:43Speaker 3: Yeah, First Light Fusion, And you're gonna make all of
- 1:09:46Speaker 3: your stuff from that, yep. And it'll all be available
- 1:09:49Speaker 3: here by the end of the year. Most of the
- 1:09:53Speaker 3: basse layers and stuff shall be available in the next
- 1:09:55Speaker 3: week or so.
- 1:09:55Speaker 2: But no one's seen it.
- 1:09:57Speaker 7: I have seen it.
- 1:09:58Speaker 3: Nope, no one's seen it. No and seen it. We
- 1:10:01Speaker 3: didn't have the shot show it was. It's just so
- 1:10:03Speaker 3: difficult to get We have so many different fabrics now,
- 1:10:06Speaker 3: we had no idea if we could even pull it
- 1:10:08Speaker 3: off this year. So basically we just went forward with
- 1:10:10Speaker 3: the program and said, if we can do it in
- 1:10:13Speaker 3: time for hunting season, fine, if not, whatever. But you know,
- 1:10:16Speaker 3: there's just all these different all the fabrics have to match.
- 1:10:19Speaker 3: You know, you might buy one synthetic top from one
- 1:10:23Speaker 3: one end of the country and another marino piece from
- 1:10:25Speaker 3: another end of the country. You want to wear them together,
- 1:10:27Speaker 3: so you gotta different Yeah, so you really got to
- 1:10:30Speaker 3: struggle to get all those colors to match and everything.
- 1:10:33Speaker 3: So it takes a long time. So once we got
- 1:10:36Speaker 3: all our factories online, we told them, you know, let's go.
- 1:10:40Speaker 3: When we were building it, so we're going to have
- 1:10:43Speaker 3: stuff ready shortly.
- 1:10:44Speaker 1: Now, Krav, if I'm wrong, you're the Was you the
- 1:10:47Speaker 1: first person to ever put camouflage on renal wool? Yes, basically,
- 1:10:52Speaker 1: which is not an easy thing to do.
- 1:10:54Speaker 3: It's yeah, it was me.
- 1:10:56Speaker 2: We started with a box, yeah, exactly, melted and put
- 1:11:00Speaker 2: them in the oven.
- 1:11:01Speaker 3: Damn you no, we started we were all totally into hunting,
- 1:11:06Speaker 3: and then we started wearing you know, we live in
- 1:11:08Speaker 3: a ski town, so then kind of in the early
- 1:11:11Speaker 3: two thousands, you know, Marino stuff kind of came into
- 1:11:15Speaker 3: the ski and snowboarding and snowmobiling seemed pretty heavy, you know,
- 1:11:19Speaker 3: and we started switching over to that.
- 1:11:20Speaker 2: People started wearing it because they realized it didn't reak,
- 1:11:22Speaker 2: It wasn't.
- 1:11:24Speaker 3: They started comfort. They started, yeah, it didn't smell, and
- 1:11:26Speaker 3: it's just way more comfortable, even when you do sweat.
- 1:11:29Speaker 3: And then, you know, we were all super into archery,
- 1:11:32Speaker 3: hunting and hunting in general, and it didn't take long
- 1:11:35Speaker 3: to figure out that this would be way better than
- 1:11:38Speaker 3: existing products for hunting. But at the time, nobody printed
- 1:11:42Speaker 3: on marino. You know, people are like T shirt style,
- 1:11:45Speaker 3: maybe like you know, they finished T shirt and they'd print,
- 1:11:48Speaker 3: you know, something like cutesy on it, but not like
- 1:11:51Speaker 3: large rolls just rolls out. So it took us about
- 1:11:54Speaker 3: eighteen months to find a factory that could actually do it.
- 1:11:57Speaker 9: You know.
- 1:11:57Speaker 3: We tried a couple of different things and it didn't
- 1:11:59Speaker 3: feel or whatever. Then we found a guy that could
- 1:12:03Speaker 3: do it and do it well, and that was the
- 1:12:05Speaker 3: beginning of the company. The first year showed up with
- 1:12:07Speaker 3: a shot show with literally like a Duffel bag and
- 1:12:10Speaker 3: I had five pieces, you know, and that was it
- 1:12:13Speaker 3: and just kind of hung them up and you know.
- 1:12:16Speaker 2: Some weird dude.
- 1:12:17Speaker 3: That was weird.
- 1:12:19Speaker 4: It was it was I was wearing white with your
- 1:12:25Speaker 4: like skater Levi.
- 1:12:26Speaker 3: White boots, my hunting boots. You know, wore whites up
- 1:12:30Speaker 3: until like eight years ago. There's just the most comfortable shoes.
- 1:12:33Speaker 3: I'd used.
- 1:12:35Speaker 7: Logging.
- 1:12:36Speaker 3: That's what I used for logging, and that's what we
- 1:12:38Speaker 3: used for you know, walking around. It wasn't until probably
- 1:12:41Speaker 3: eight or seven or eight years ago that we kind
- 1:12:43Speaker 3: of got into the more you know, technical stuff, but
- 1:12:47Speaker 3: that's what we'd work in all day. So we figured
- 1:12:49Speaker 3: out it's great for hunting. But the fact is it's
- 1:12:52Speaker 3: kind of a different deal, you know. And once we
- 1:12:53Speaker 3: switched over to you know, now use handbags, but you know,
- 1:12:57Speaker 3: Solomon's or whatever, just having something lighter that. The thing
- 1:13:01Speaker 3: with whites is that if you have to wear them
- 1:13:02Speaker 3: every single day, you'd wear out a pair of Solomons and.
- 1:13:08Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, man, yeah, they're not they're not intending that
- 1:13:10Speaker 1: you're actually just gonna wear them around on hard surfaces
- 1:13:13Speaker 1: all the time.
- 1:13:14Speaker 3: Yeah, or even you know in the woods you destroy them,
- 1:13:16Speaker 3: or a pair of whites you wear for whatever, you know,
- 1:13:18Speaker 3: two years you set them out to get them resold
- 1:13:20Speaker 3: and they're good to go.
- 1:13:21Speaker 1: I keep a pair of keep for hunting. Yeah, I
- 1:13:25Speaker 1: for not hunting, but I don't want my hunting boots
- 1:13:27Speaker 1: to get screwed up walking on sidewalks.
- 1:13:29Speaker 2: And stuff like that.
- 1:13:30Speaker 3: Right, Yeah, it makes sense.
- 1:13:31Speaker 1: The toules the edges down and you can't cut in
- 1:13:34Speaker 1: on hills, you.
- 1:13:34Speaker 3: Know, Yeah, and going downhills. They still aren't as good
- 1:13:37Speaker 3: as whites. But the fact is is that you know,
- 1:13:40Speaker 3: our hunting season out here, it's only whatever ten weeks,
- 1:13:43Speaker 3: So you'd rather have a pair of shoes that they
- 1:13:46Speaker 3: don't have to glass that long. You just have to
- 1:13:47Speaker 3: work really well and be really light and make it
- 1:13:49Speaker 3: so you can carry a you know, eighty hundred pound
- 1:13:52Speaker 3: pack down a hill, and all of a sudden, once
- 1:13:54Speaker 3: you realize that it's it's nice, you know.
- 1:13:56Speaker 8: I think for the listener, we should explain what whites
- 1:13:58Speaker 8: are because I don't know what.
- 1:14:00Speaker 4: Yeah, I just barely know the Spokane.
- 1:14:01Speaker 3: Yeah, they're not a Spokane America. May they're just like
- 1:14:04Speaker 3: they're you know what, you see all the foest service
- 1:14:06Speaker 3: guys wearing the logging guys.
- 1:14:07Speaker 2: It was like to the untrained eye, it look like
- 1:14:09Speaker 2: a lady boot.
- 1:14:10Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:14:11Speaker 3: The heels got a big heel two inches, Yeah, pretty
- 1:14:13Speaker 3: low pro Yeah, they're two inches. And then they've got
- 1:14:16Speaker 3: just regular vibrum souls. But they can rebuild them for you.
- 1:14:19Speaker 1: You know, you're sending like I used to have some
- 1:14:20Speaker 1: whites pack boots, which just like real heavy. I used
- 1:14:25Speaker 1: to use them climbing trees and the word times ice
- 1:14:26Speaker 1: to do arborist work. Yeah, we get these winter contracts
- 1:14:29Speaker 1: doing boulevard maples. I remember one year we did three
- 1:14:32Speaker 1: hundred some boulevard maples and some days it's ten degrees
- 1:14:34Speaker 1: below zero because this is cutting trees in Montana. And
- 1:14:37Speaker 1: I would put tree spikes on over them because they're
- 1:14:40Speaker 1: so rigid. But I always thought they're like kind of
- 1:14:43Speaker 1: too rigid for hunting.
- 1:14:44Speaker 3: You know, they were let's say break in, but that's
- 1:14:48Speaker 3: you know, we that's before we'd spend all day in
- 1:14:50Speaker 3: the woods. You know, we're in a logging business, to
- 1:14:53Speaker 3: firewood and whatever. That was just what you'd wore. And
- 1:14:55Speaker 3: then after a while, though, you know, you realize, wow,
- 1:14:58Speaker 3: there's some way better off options there.
- 1:15:00Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 1:15:01Speaker 3: Especially it's because they don't have to last, like I said,
- 1:15:03Speaker 3: you know, maybe a season or two seasons, Max, and
- 1:15:06Speaker 3: you ready to buy a new pair, you know.
- 1:15:09Speaker 1: You know, I want to talking man about you know,
- 1:15:10Speaker 1: just talking about wool, because you guys do such a
- 1:15:12Speaker 1: nice job with the Marino wool stuff. Wolves had a
- 1:15:14Speaker 1: weird history because my old man, like my old man
- 1:15:16Speaker 1: started hunting after World War Two, so he started hunting.
- 1:15:19Speaker 1: He got back from World War two nineteen forty five,
- 1:15:23Speaker 1: got into hunting, he said. But at the time, like
- 1:15:25Speaker 1: there wasn't that he didn't have like sporting goods like
- 1:15:26Speaker 1: you have now, you know. He said, they used to
- 1:15:30Speaker 1: they just hunting their clothes.
- 1:15:31Speaker 2: They hunted their.
- 1:15:32Speaker 1: Military surplus stuff. He said, for ten years. It's still
- 1:15:34Speaker 1: the best stuff you could have.
- 1:15:35Speaker 2: And he just spent two and a half years crawling
- 1:15:38Speaker 2: around essentially.
- 1:15:39Speaker 1: Camping out, you know, from all through Italy up into
- 1:15:43Speaker 1: Europe in wool clothes and living in a fox whole camps.
- 1:15:46Speaker 1: He said, they just hunted that stuff. And he told
- 1:15:48Speaker 1: he tells a funny story where he used to just
- 1:15:50Speaker 1: hunt with other vets, you know, and they were out
- 1:15:52Speaker 1: one time in a field hunting. Everybody had their army
- 1:15:55Speaker 1: surplus stuff on. I guess it wasn't surplus back then.
- 1:15:58Speaker 1: Their army stuff back on, and some took a shot.
- 1:16:00Speaker 1: He said, A couple of those guys off the field
- 1:16:01Speaker 1: all hit the deck like it was like still like
- 1:16:04Speaker 1: in their head. But he always hunted them wool. I mean,
- 1:16:08Speaker 1: all the time I was growing up, my old man
- 1:16:10Speaker 1: wore you know, it was like green wool. They're not surplus,
- 1:16:14Speaker 1: but I don't remember who makes them, but it's like
- 1:16:15Speaker 1: a field pant and you'd die hiking into your tree stand.
- 1:16:19Speaker 1: You'd be like so sweaty.
- 1:16:21Speaker 10: You know.
- 1:16:22Speaker 1: We used to like hiking and then put your pants
- 1:16:24Speaker 1: on when you got there because they're so warm, this
- 1:16:27Speaker 1: thick green wool. And my mom would buy bulk wool
- 1:16:30Speaker 1: fabric and so close for me my brothers out of
- 1:16:33Speaker 1: wool that we would hunt in.
- 1:16:35Speaker 2: I wish I had saved him.
- 1:16:36Speaker 1: We all had pants and a jacket that my mom
- 1:16:37Speaker 1: made out of wool, and we stellup there hot in hell.
- 1:16:40Speaker 1: And I remember, like when I was a little kid,
- 1:16:41Speaker 1: they came out with that King of the Mountain wool
- 1:16:43Speaker 1: clothes and getting that catalog and just dreaming over that
- 1:16:48Speaker 1: trapper pull over. It was like a four hundred dollars
- 1:16:51Speaker 1: washed the wool jackets. It seemed like it was like
- 1:16:54Speaker 1: unfathom Moabe that you'd like have that kind of money
- 1:16:57Speaker 1: to buy some sort of garment. And then Cabella's came
- 1:17:00Speaker 1: mount with a washable wool. It was supposed to be
- 1:17:01Speaker 1: like a knockoff a King of the Mountain, and they
- 1:17:04Speaker 1: were half as much.
- 1:17:05Speaker 2: I bought a pair of those pants and washed.
- 1:17:07Speaker 1: Them and they were like spandex in my buddy, like
- 1:17:10Speaker 1: they're be like, dude, what are those I'm like, listen, man,
- 1:17:12Speaker 1: you're looking at a lot of money right now. I
- 1:17:14Speaker 1: don't care what these things look like. I'm wearing them.
- 1:17:17Speaker 1: And then now with like your guys stuff, like you
- 1:17:20Speaker 1: honestly can put it in. It's like you washing the
- 1:17:23Speaker 1: washing machine. Yeah, it's unbelievable, it is, but it's like
- 1:17:26Speaker 1: still the best fabric and it grows on the back
- 1:17:28Speaker 1: of sheet credit line for a bachelor.
- 1:17:32Speaker 3: I didn't even know. I wasn't even aware of like whool.
- 1:17:36Speaker 3: But you know, I mean, I've been wearing Polypro since
- 1:17:40Speaker 3: I was ten years old.
- 1:17:41Speaker 1: When I started hunting the mountains. We look like dudes
- 1:17:43Speaker 1: out of the RII catalog. Yeah, we wore mountain clothes. Yeah,
- 1:17:48Speaker 1: we didn't have anything.
- 1:17:48Speaker 2: Actually, meant for a hundred one because it was all
- 1:17:50Speaker 2: too big.
- 1:17:51Speaker 1: If you're like a skinny guy who runs around the
- 1:17:52Speaker 1: mountains a lot, it's too big for you right then.
- 1:17:56Speaker 1: And so we just wore like mountaineering clothes. We hunted
- 1:17:59Speaker 1: a mountaineering clobes, exact thing we have like blue and
- 1:18:01Speaker 1: red you I mean, like we'd like I'd like get
- 1:18:04Speaker 1: ritt dye and try like die stuff.
- 1:18:06Speaker 4: So it was a little duller, some Patadonia stuff, some
- 1:18:09Speaker 4: a lot of Sims fleeces.
- 1:18:11Speaker 1: Totally, man, totally, I would get it. I would go
- 1:18:13Speaker 1: to good Wills. I have a lot of Moneys in school.
- 1:18:16Speaker 1: I'd go to good Wills in rich towns. Like if
- 1:18:19Speaker 1: you could hit a good Will in Jackson Hole, Wyoming,
- 1:18:21Speaker 1: you know, or hit a good Will here, catch minta home,
- 1:18:24Speaker 1: you would walk out like tricked out and amazing mountain apparel,
- 1:18:30Speaker 1: ski apparel and stuff. And we hunt because it was
- 1:18:31Speaker 1: like so great, not just you know, not people make
- 1:18:34Speaker 1: stuff for like skinny dudes that like they're running around
- 1:18:36Speaker 1: the mountains.
- 1:18:36Speaker 4: Flip side is senior citizen centers. Don't overlook those because.
- 1:18:40Speaker 2: You get they flag them.
- 1:18:42Speaker 4: You get, uh, you know, old guy dress sweaters, that
- 1:18:46Speaker 4: are one hundred percent lambs wool, and you can haggle
- 1:18:50Speaker 4: those ladies down at the brother He still does old
- 1:18:53Speaker 4: man sweaters about it.
- 1:18:56Speaker 3: Were so yeah, that was it. Then that's you know
- 1:19:01Speaker 3: the once everything kind of switched over from synthetics to wool,
- 1:19:07Speaker 3: so did we and then you.
- 1:19:08Speaker 2: Know everything meaning the smart people.
- 1:19:10Speaker 1: I just you know, like people who don't like smelly clothes.
- 1:19:12Speaker 3: Yeah, people spend a lot of time outside, you know,
- 1:19:15Speaker 3: like where to forge you to live at a place
- 1:19:18Speaker 3: where everybody spends a lot of time outside, you know.
- 1:19:20Speaker 7: So it's a fit town man.
- 1:19:22Speaker 3: Yeah, a lot of what last night people fit most.
- 1:19:27Speaker 1: So that's like a fit crowd, you know.
- 1:19:29Speaker 7: Yeah, it would come out for something like that.
- 1:19:31Speaker 1: I was kind of blown away, man.
- 1:19:32Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean this place is unique too, and that
- 1:19:34Speaker 3: I mean it's it's it's as steep as it gets
- 1:19:37Speaker 3: like most places in the mountains. You know, you could
- 1:19:39Speaker 3: still kind of enjoy yourself walking up and down stuff
- 1:19:44Speaker 3: out here. Everything's like thirty degrees minimum, wouldn't you say?
- 1:19:47Speaker 3: I mean it's just so steep that you're not pretty fit.
- 1:19:51Speaker 3: It's really it's just wouldn't be fun. You'd just be
- 1:19:54Speaker 3: like this sucks.
- 1:19:54Speaker 1: Yeah, Ryan was showing his place he likes to hunt.
- 1:19:56Speaker 1: You said, this is one place I can just tell
- 1:19:58Speaker 1: people where I hunt because they're not.
- 1:19:59Speaker 4: Going to walk that. It's the dream there right now.
- 1:20:04Speaker 1: Yeah, you might be walking along. You might be walking
- 1:20:06Speaker 1: along and kick something and realize that it's Hemingway's cut
- 1:20:10Speaker 1: up shotgun.
- 1:20:11Speaker 2: Oh he brought a full circle.
- 1:20:13Speaker 1: He brought the podcast.
- 1:20:15Speaker 3: I'll bet you that there there's the welder right there,
- 1:20:18Speaker 3: right right, walk about.
- 1:20:19Speaker 2: He's down in the pool.
- 1:20:20Speaker 1: Yeah he is.
- 1:20:21Speaker 3: He sold those piece one piece off every now and then.
- 1:20:24Speaker 2: Helen showed me a note.
- 1:20:26Speaker 7: Just tell me what it is.

- 1:21:01Speaker 1: Yeah, Helen, Helen used to be Helen used to be
- 1:21:05Speaker 1: the most. I used to admire Helen's work ethic and
- 1:21:09Speaker 1: I'm old enough to have sired Helen.
- 1:21:13Speaker 2: If I at twelve, I could have sired you at
- 1:21:15Speaker 2: twelve years ago. Yeah, actually I couldn't have to say it.
- 1:21:21Speaker 1: So, Uh, Hell lost her phone day when she had
- 1:21:26Speaker 1: to pee in the woods. It's so different for girls
- 1:21:30Speaker 1: to have to go in the woods. I don't lose
- 1:21:32Speaker 1: anything in the woods because I stay upright. My pockets
- 1:21:35Speaker 1: stay oriented up right.
- 1:21:37Speaker 2: For girls got an invert essentially invert and spill their
- 1:21:40Speaker 2: pockets out.
- 1:21:40Speaker 3: Did you find it?
- 1:21:41Speaker 1: No, she's it's an hour away. She's got to go
- 1:21:44Speaker 1: back and get the name.

- 1:22:16Speaker 7: Why don't you say that? Hell?
- 1:22:19Speaker 2: And mister flight yesterday, mister flight lost your phone?
- 1:22:28Speaker 1: Didn't catch it? Squad a rough?
- 1:22:32Speaker 7: All right, you're honest.

- 1:22:38Speaker 7: No, if you can't.
- 1:22:43Speaker 4: Deep in thought there but no.
- 1:22:47Speaker 7: Ryan Callahan closing thoughts.
- 1:22:51Speaker 1: After I brought it full circle with that Hemmingway deal.
- 1:22:53Speaker 1: I mean, what are you gonna do?
- 1:22:55Speaker 4: There's nothing. You wrapped it up tight tight. We got
- 1:22:58Speaker 4: some cooking to do tonight and starting to think about it.
- 1:23:01Speaker 9: You know what.
- 1:23:01Speaker 2: Yeah, I want to talk about that real quick, real.
- 1:23:03Speaker 4: Fast, amazing menu.
- 1:23:05Speaker 1: So backcunchy hunt an Angler fundraiser night. I'm doing beaver
- 1:23:11Speaker 1: con feet, which is where sor Yeah.
- 1:23:15Speaker 2: I feel like I had some guy if be like, oh, no,
- 1:23:18Speaker 2: you don't know what's been done.
- 1:23:19Speaker 1: I just have a feeling that I'm the first guy
- 1:23:21Speaker 1: in the face of the first guy to ever have
- 1:23:23Speaker 1: made beaver confeet. He's like, you don't know everything's been done.
- 1:23:27Speaker 1: I'm like, no, I don't know. That's why I said,
- 1:23:28Speaker 1: I think I'm the first guy to ever make beaver confeet.
- 1:23:30Speaker 4: Every tall peak around here has got a corzy yellow
- 1:23:33Speaker 4: belly sitting on top of it, and you're never the
- 1:23:35Speaker 4: first guy to make it up there.
- 1:23:36Speaker 1: No, you know what, we were hunting, BC member, We're
- 1:23:38Speaker 1: up on that crazy ridge and the wind was just howling.
- 1:23:41Speaker 1: He looked down. Sure enough, thirty two caliber thirty two
- 1:23:44Speaker 1: caliber Dominion.
- 1:23:46Speaker 4: Did you look cartridge out?
- 1:23:48Speaker 7: Yes, Canadian maker.
- 1:23:49Speaker 9: Wow.
- 1:23:51Speaker 1: I took a piece of I took a little bit
- 1:23:52Speaker 1: of white out. I have a after on your per
- 1:23:55Speaker 1: your suggestion. I made a medicine I didn't do a
- 1:23:57Speaker 1: medicine bag. A did a medicine box.
- 1:23:59Speaker 2: Cool, which is very centralized location to put all your
- 1:24:01Speaker 2: weird stuff. So I took that cool.
- 1:24:04Speaker 1: I took that thirty two Dominion casing and took white
- 1:24:08Speaker 1: out and made just I did like artifacts in the museum.
- 1:24:10Speaker 2: I did white out, and then I wrote the date location.
- 1:24:14Speaker 7: I found it.
- 1:24:15Speaker 1: And then I took my wife's uh nail, what do
- 1:24:18Speaker 1: you call it? Lack nail lacker nail not polished, It
- 1:24:21Speaker 1: wasn't colored turned if I know you don't talking about
- 1:24:24Speaker 1: clear nail polish. And I went over So I did
- 1:24:28Speaker 1: white out, then I wrote the date and location. Then
- 1:24:30Speaker 1: I went over that with clear nail polish. Let it
- 1:24:34Speaker 1: dry and throw my medicine box.
- 1:24:36Speaker 4: Sweet, that's cool that you started.
- 1:24:38Speaker 8: Did you start one.
- 1:24:40Speaker 1: I've had on for a while, dude, I've got bores
- 1:24:42Speaker 1: toss Indian arrowheads. Well, I have my shoe that fell
- 1:24:46Speaker 1: out of.
- 1:24:46Speaker 4: My head from that from that black bear. Do you
- 1:24:49Speaker 4: sitting on my desk at home?
- 1:24:51Speaker 1: I got packer bones in there.
- 1:24:52Speaker 4: Yeah yeah, aka swizzle sticks.
- 1:24:55Speaker 1: Swizzle sticks aka faculums, vaculum vacuum wrap. My raccoon vaculum
- 1:25:01Speaker 1: off a twenty pound raccoon is as big as a
- 1:25:03Speaker 1: black beard vaculum off a two hundred pound black badger.
- 1:25:06Speaker 4: Buddy, you start skinning out a badger and you're like, you.
- 1:25:08Speaker 1: Just can't get through it because all the vaculum I
- 1:25:12Speaker 1: had to give up. All right, Joe, you already closed
- 1:25:15Speaker 1: your thoughts. You lost your phone, and Joe likes her phone.
