Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: Is some good news for us on this Wednesday. Violent
- 0:02Speaker 1: crime has increased by has increased by two percent. Sorry,
- 0:06Speaker 1: this is not good news. Well, what do you say, decrease?
- 0:08Speaker 1: It should be decreased by two percent for the first
- 0:11Speaker 1: time since twenty eighteen. New police data shows ram raids
- 0:15Speaker 1: down fifty eight percent, serious assaults were down one percent. Sorry,
- 0:19Speaker 1: retail crime itself has trended upwards with a twelve percent
- 0:22Speaker 1: increased in theft. So Dairy Business Owners Group chairpis and
- 0:26Speaker 1: Sunny Kashew joins you right now, Hello.
- 0:28Speaker 2: Sunny, Cure Andrew, how are you good?
- 0:32Speaker 1: So with the ram raids down and the serious assaults down,
- 0:35Speaker 1: can we say that the tough on crime approach has worked.
- 0:38Speaker 2: Well, it's a great beginning and a relief for retailers
- 0:42Speaker 2: and dairy owners. As you know, they lived in fear
- 0:44Speaker 2: every day for years, you know. And people are feeling
- 0:49Speaker 2: the difference between the two governments, you know, a soft
- 0:52Speaker 2: on crime approach versus getting tough on crime. So, as
- 0:56Speaker 2: you rightly said, the ramblates are down. The the violent crime,
- 0:59Speaker 2: which was increase fifty one percent between twenty eighteen and
- 1:03Speaker 2: twenty twenty three, has a first time for since twenty eighteen.
- 1:08Speaker 2: And also the back to basics model in the policing model,
- 1:13Speaker 2: it is working. As you could see now the aggravator
- 1:16Speaker 2: robberies are popped and you could see Auckland CVD. It's
- 1:19Speaker 2: you know, looks much safer than it used to be.
- 1:23Speaker 2: And and here is also a difference I guess between
- 1:26Speaker 2: two police ministers, you know, Ginny Anderson until twenty twenty three,
- 1:30Speaker 2: who basically did nothing and it was all talks, but
- 1:35Speaker 2: versus Mark Mitchell, who is making a difference. So but
- 1:39Speaker 2: there's a lot more to be done. And I think
- 1:41Speaker 2: there's a broad beginning.
- 1:42Speaker 1: Could we argue that with the violent climb down, the
- 1:44Speaker 1: ram raids down, the serious assaults down, those things that
- 1:48Speaker 1: that has happened, But those bag dectors, those bad dudes
- 1:51Speaker 1: are now actually going back to the old things. They're
- 1:53Speaker 1: doing burglaries, that they're doing theft and they're doing shoplifting.
- 1:56Speaker 2: Well, look, this will take time and also there are
- 2:00Speaker 2: new solutions which would be required. You know, one side,
- 2:05Speaker 2: police are doing good job operationally, it's making a difference,
- 2:09Speaker 2: but we need to make sure that justice system also delivers.
- 2:14Speaker 2: The justice system need to be overhauled. They need to
- 2:18Speaker 2: get tough and there need to be consequences. You know,
- 2:21Speaker 2: it's a time for a zero tolerance approach to crime offenders.
- 2:25Speaker 2: Regardless of their age, they must face real consequences for
- 2:28Speaker 2: the actions.
- 2:30Speaker 1: Sonnay, thank you so much for your work and your advocacy,
- 2:32Speaker 1: and I thank you for your time today, Sunny Kashaw
