  Speaker 4: I was a female and all my life it seemed

  Speaker 4: like they just thought that was a boy's name. My

  Speaker 4: document would have to fight and fight and fight. So

  Speaker 4: I'm like, did I want to put the A back in?

  Speaker 4: What do I want to put It's like it's like okay, whatever,

  Speaker 4: but then they're all man so with the A.

  Speaker 5: And when I was doing the title for your book,

  Speaker 5: I was like, Okay, I know people are going to

  Speaker 5: think there's a misspelling here.

  Speaker 4: Yeah, it's not.

  Speaker 5: It's the way your life is.
• 5:46
  Speaker 4: And so.

  Speaker 5: It's like, you gotta get the book to really understand

  Speaker 5: Tell me what, Okay, what led you to really wanting

  Speaker 5: to venture off and do a solo book? Because I

  Speaker 5: know you've done collaboration projects, but what made you want
• 6:09
  Speaker 5: to actually do a solo project this time?
• 6:14
  Speaker 4: Well, after after we all did From Their Eyes, I
• 6:18
  Speaker 4: kind of felt like, okay, that's that's going to be
• 6:21
  Speaker 4: the time for me to just and I figured, you know,
• 6:28
  Speaker 4: it was time, it was time to really just put
• 6:31
  Speaker 4: it out there. And like when I did From Their Eyes,
• 6:34
  Speaker 4: God said, I hadn't now time to tell you a story,
• 6:36
  Speaker 4: So I'm figuring the following me to tell a full story.
• 6:39
  Speaker 4: So From Their Eyes was a hit bit of you know,
• 6:42
  Speaker 4: sleek peek, and then I said, you know what, as
• 6:46
  Speaker 4: I began that journey, it was actually kind of pretty healing,
• 6:48
  Speaker 4: so I know I might just go ahead and finish
• 6:51
  Speaker 4: the story. I thought everybody was as so I said, well,
• 6:56
  Speaker 4: you know.
• 6:56
  Speaker 5: That they are working on their story as well, and
• 7:02
  Speaker 5: life is lifing for some of them, like so you know,
• 7:07
  Speaker 5: they're they're working on it. I know, uh, lay Tanya,
• 7:11
  Speaker 5: she's still in school and so she's been working and
• 7:15
  Speaker 5: going to school and so that's been one of those things.
• 7:20
  Speaker 5: And so she ended up having to repeat I think
• 7:26
  Speaker 5: a class or so because life life was life.
• 7:30
  Speaker 4: And and so you know.
• 7:33
  Speaker 5: So but she's working on it, and you know, you know,
• 7:39
  Speaker 5: and like I want to be Yeah, I'm always here,
• 7:43
  Speaker 5: you know, whatever you need me to do to help you.

  Speaker 4: See journey got me on the journey, I'm like, what
• 7:55
  Speaker 4: are we doing here? Father? What is happening?

  Speaker 5: It's so like when you decided to actually go through
• 8:04
  Speaker 5: you know, what was your thought process getting to that?
• 8:09
  Speaker 5: Because I know it was a scary beginning, like am
• 8:16
  Speaker 5: I really gonna write this? What feelings are gonna come up?
• 8:21
  Speaker 5: Can I actually get through the chapters when I start
• 8:25
  Speaker 5: to write? And am I gonna even be able to complete?
• 8:29
  Speaker 5: Because I know when you start and that that healing
• 8:33
  Speaker 5: does begin, sometimes you're gonna have to walk away before
• 8:37
  Speaker 5: you get to that in depth part to finish the chapter.
• 8:41
  Speaker 5: So what was that like when you were talking yourself
• 8:44
  Speaker 5: to even get.
• 8:45
  Speaker 4: Started, Well, it wasn't so much to talking myself were
• 8:50
  Speaker 4: talking to God because I promise you, I said, Father,
• 8:52
  Speaker 4: we're doing this, We're doing this together. So I promise you.
• 8:56
  Speaker 4: This journey was not my journey. I tell them follow
• 8:59
  Speaker 4: the time, this is not my book, this is our book.

  Speaker 4: Because I had no intentions of writing anything. I'd nice
• 9:06
  Speaker 4: to tell you my story. I'd be glad to tell
• 9:08
  Speaker 4: I told I tell him all entire life. But every
• 9:10
  Speaker 4: time I would tell the BD like you need to
• 9:12
  Speaker 4: put that in a book. You need to put that
• 9:13
  Speaker 4: in a book, and I'm just like, can I just
• 9:16
  Speaker 4: tell somebody? And they typed it up because I'm not
• 9:17
  Speaker 4: a writer. I don't do that. I don't know I
• 9:21
  Speaker 4: do that.
• 9:22
  Speaker 7: But once I began to do the my solo book,
• 9:29
  Speaker 7: I really had to be in prayer because, like you said,
• 9:32
  Speaker 7: they were definitely captures where like.
• 9:35
  Speaker 4: Speaking about my parents passing or even my biological mother's passion,
• 9:40
  Speaker 4: my forster mother passion. I had to cause I had
• 9:43
  Speaker 4: to call for like days before I could go back
• 9:46
  Speaker 4: and do it because I just I couldn't do it.
• 9:49
  Speaker 4: I just broke me and my adopted mom, who was
• 9:53
  Speaker 4: my hero still is to this day, who the woman.
• 9:56
  Speaker 6: I wanted to be, who I hope I'm trying to be.

  Speaker 4: She with her passion. I think that took me, I
• 10:06
  Speaker 4: want to say, maybe over a week to go back
• 10:09
  Speaker 4: to writing, because it just I just can't do it.

  Speaker 4: I'm even trying not to break down now because anytime
• 10:16
  Speaker 4: I think about her, I just missed her so much.
• 10:19
  Speaker 4: But I would and I would just wish she was
• 10:21
  Speaker 4: here to see all that you know she has placed
• 10:25
  Speaker 4: in me that she would be I think so proud of.
• 10:28
  Speaker 4: I really think she would be really proud. I think
• 10:29
  Speaker 4: my dad would be proud. They would be talking to
• 10:31
  Speaker 4: everybody and telling everybody, buying thousands of books and you
• 10:37
  Speaker 4: know so. But yeah, that was a process that was definitely,
• 10:40
  Speaker 4: like you said, once she once you started, you're not
• 10:43
  Speaker 4: really aware of where it's going to take me. And
• 10:46
  Speaker 4: I really, I really didn't think it was going to
• 10:48
  Speaker 4: break me the way it did. But I needed it.
• 10:52
  Speaker 4: I needed to do that because that.
• 10:53
  Speaker 5: Was part of your grieving process that you hadn't even
• 10:59
  Speaker 5: started yet. You didn't know why you need it, but
• 11:02
  Speaker 5: you didn't know that you needed that, because I think
• 11:06
  Speaker 5: life sometimes gets in the way of that grieving process
• 11:10
  Speaker 5: and we don't know that we actually need it, and
• 11:13
  Speaker 5: so writing about it helped you start and release things
• 11:19
  Speaker 5: that you've been carrying, and that was probably a beautiful
• 11:23
  Speaker 5: healing moment for you. And you know, yeah, your mom
• 11:28
  Speaker 5: is definitely proud and she definitely sees you. You know,
• 11:32
  Speaker 5: like my brother yesterday, I sent him the pictures of
• 11:34
  Speaker 5: my my awards from the program yesterday and he was like, Sis,
• 11:39
  Speaker 5: keep doing your thing. You know, Mom would be really
• 11:41
  Speaker 5: proud of you. And listen, it's so crazy, like I
• 11:50
  Speaker 5: was telling you, like, my my grandson was born on Friday.
• 11:54
  Speaker 4: My son had.
• 11:58
  Speaker 5: Yeah, my son told me, and he had told me
• 12:01
  Speaker 5: on Thursday that they were going to have to induce
• 12:04
  Speaker 5: and they were going to have to take the baby
• 12:07
  Speaker 5: or whatever because her blood pressure was elevated and so
• 12:11
  Speaker 5: they were going to have to do that. That was Thursday,
• 12:14
  Speaker 5: and so Friday morning he called and I'm like okay,
• 12:20
  Speaker 5: and so I'm preparing, you know, Mama, grandma, everything, and
• 12:26
  Speaker 5: so emotions are all over the place. And then he
• 12:29
  Speaker 5: sends me a picture and my son sends me a picture,
• 12:33
  Speaker 5: and the pictures my son just getting out because he's
• 12:37
  Speaker 5: getting all the hospital gown because she's had to have
• 12:40
  Speaker 5: a c section or whatever, and so he's sending his
• 12:43
  Speaker 5: little dress up stuff. But he's holding his necklace up.
• 12:46
  Speaker 5: But the way his hand was in the picture looks
• 12:50
  Speaker 5: like my mother's hand and my mom had an injury
• 12:53
  Speaker 5: to her hand. And I broke down instantly, right, and
• 13:00
  Speaker 5: so just I'm like yeah, And so I told him,
• 13:06
  Speaker 5: I said, your grandma's with you, so everything would be
• 13:08
  Speaker 5: just fine. And then when he sent me pictures of
• 13:12
  Speaker 5: the baby, and then I sent the pictures to my brother,
• 13:16
  Speaker 5: my brother was like, Mama is there because that's that
• 13:21
  Speaker 5: that's Mama all over because baby was holding his hands.
• 13:26
  Speaker 5: He was like, that's mama. I said, I know.
• 13:31
  Speaker 4: That I saw, so.
• 13:37
  Speaker 5: Yeah, and so I was like, yeah, Mama was all
• 13:42
  Speaker 5: over Columbia, yes, this weekend. So it just one of
• 13:48
  Speaker 5: those things. But that was the healing thing and the
• 13:53
  Speaker 5: healing journey for that part. But let's get back to
• 13:58
  Speaker 5: you and this this look. Now, when you decided to
• 14:03
  Speaker 5: do your chapters your titles, what was one of the
• 14:07
  Speaker 5: hardest chapter titles to come up with? Because let me,
• 14:13
  Speaker 5: because I don't know if you remember your chapter titles.
• 14:17
  Speaker 5: What I got, I got, prepare, I got where you
• 14:25
  Speaker 5: don't don't worry? Got it?
• 14:27
  Speaker 4: The younger, the younger years get the.
• 14:33
  Speaker 5: Book, No I got you, sing your editor.
• 14:42
  Speaker 4: I got you. I got you all the way I
• 14:47
  Speaker 4: knew who to break up.
• 14:54
  Speaker 5: Together, learning to find my way in the world, The
• 15:00
  Speaker 5: ups and downs of life, my story will continue when
• 15:04
  Speaker 5: life didn't go the way that I thought it would.
• 15:07
  Speaker 5: Which one of those was the toughest one to write.
• 15:14
  Speaker 4: I think the ups and down because I believe that's
• 15:19
  Speaker 4: the chapter that I began to talk about my mom m.
• 15:24
  Speaker 4: I believe that. I believe that's the chapter, and that's
• 15:27
  Speaker 4: that was the hardest one to not only give it
• 15:31
  Speaker 4: a title, but just because I felt like when I
• 15:35
  Speaker 4: began to talk about it, because I did, like you said,
• 15:38
  Speaker 4: just write it and everything else will come together. So
• 15:40
  Speaker 4: I wrote it, and then when I go back, I
• 15:42
  Speaker 4: looked and tried to when I sectioned it off, I
• 15:45
  Speaker 4: felt that chapter was an up and down emotion because
• 15:50
  Speaker 4: m hm, it was just so hard to go through it.
• 15:55
  Speaker 4: And it was the fact of I went when I
• 15:59
  Speaker 4: went away to cool And I don't know if I
• 16:02
  Speaker 4: shared this because I don't really remember about of whatever,
• 16:05
  Speaker 4: but when I when I said it, I went away
• 16:10
  Speaker 4: to school. And the interesting part about that is like
• 16:15
  Speaker 4: God was preparing because I didn't want to go to sea.
• 16:18
  Speaker 4: I was not going to go away because even though
• 16:20
  Speaker 4: she was in a nursing home, I still sell im
• 16:23
  Speaker 4: presence in the house and I didn't know the house.
• 16:26
  Speaker 4: So I just was like, my mom will go. I mean,
• 16:29
  Speaker 4: even talking to her, I was like, I don't want to.
• 16:31
  Speaker 4: I don't want to do that. And she said, oh, no,
• 16:34
  Speaker 4: you're going. I said, but no, I don't want to
• 16:37
  Speaker 4: leave you. She said, I'm not bad. I said, but
• 16:40
  Speaker 4: I don't want to go. When she was like, ma'am,
• 16:43
  Speaker 4: you're getting an education and free and you need to
• 16:48
  Speaker 4: treat this like it's college and you need you need
• 16:52
  Speaker 4: to go, she said, you already know you need to go.
• 16:54
  Speaker 4: So I said, yeah, you know, you got to be obs.
• 16:57
  Speaker 4: I'm like okay, because I never want to disappoint her.

  Speaker 6: And so it was like maybe a month after I
• 17:04
  Speaker 6: got there.
• 17:04
  Speaker 4: I had a dream and I had a dream career
• 17:08
  Speaker 4: task and I was at school and nobody told me
• 17:11
  Speaker 4: and it freaked me out and I immediately call her
• 17:16
  Speaker 4: the next thing. It's like, mamma, U okay, Mommy.
• 17:18
  Speaker 6: She's like, yes, I'm fine, what are you talking about.
• 17:20
  Speaker 4: I'm like, I just had a drink.
• 17:21
  Speaker 6: Teachers ma I'm fine, I'm fine, everything's okay, I said.
• 17:25
  Speaker 4: She said, I'm supposed to be a class I said, yeah,
• 17:28
  Speaker 4: what I said after the counsels like are you because
• 17:30
  Speaker 4: I was freaking out. I was nervous because I just
• 17:33
  Speaker 4: felt like she was going to pass while I was
• 17:35
  Speaker 4: at school and strung enough that year. I went to
• 17:40
  Speaker 4: school in ninety nine and February of ninety nine, and
• 17:43
  Speaker 4: she passed November ninety nine, November seventeen, nineteen ninety nine.
• 17:48
  Speaker 4: And I was a fool. I wasn't too and I
• 17:53
  Speaker 4: was actually doing internship and I was facing like I'm
• 17:58
  Speaker 4: facing my laptop now doing some work, and I saw
• 18:02
  Speaker 4: my sister in the corner of my eye and I
• 18:03
  Speaker 4: was like, why.
• 18:04
  Speaker 6: Is my sister here?
• 18:06
  Speaker 5: Yeah, it's just why you here?
• 18:09
  Speaker 6: And a few minutes later, they said, can we.
• 18:11
  Speaker 4: See an office? I shook. My heart was racis. I
• 18:15
  Speaker 4: already knew what they was gonna do. I already knew
• 18:18
  Speaker 4: already immediately when I willed in, I looked at my
• 18:21
  Speaker 4: sister said what's wrong with mama? What's wrong with mama?
• 18:25
  Speaker 4: And she just boked down, crying to counsel the crime.
• 18:27
  Speaker 4: And he was he was a you know fast colored guy.
• 18:30
  Speaker 4: He was red was red like it was my MoMA.
• 18:39
  Speaker 5: You don't matter who mama it is at this point,
• 18:42
  Speaker 5: you know, because your mama is your lifeline, you know,
• 18:46
  Speaker 5: and right, your mama is your lifeline and and that's
• 18:52
  Speaker 5: that's that thing. And you know, it's hard when that
• 18:57
  Speaker 5: lifeline is gone, you know, and it doesn't have to
• 19:02
  Speaker 5: be naturally your biological mom that whoever filled that role
• 19:09
  Speaker 5: for you, when they're no longer here, it takes the
• 19:13
  Speaker 5: piece of you and it is hard. It is very
• 19:17
  Speaker 5: very difficult, and that piece is never filled again, you know.
• 19:24
  Speaker 3: And you.

  Speaker 5: Yeah, you can't feel that.
• 19:30
  Speaker 4: Nobody.
• 19:31
  Speaker 5: Nobody can't. It's never felled and it's a whole. It
• 19:36
  Speaker 5: is a void, and it's it's there, and you just

  Speaker 5: make the best with every moment that comes. And you know,

  Speaker 5: like I said, when I seen that picture that my son,
• 19:47
  Speaker 5: you know said, of his hand, I literally just broke down,
• 19:52
  Speaker 5: like it wasn't I was just done for like five minutes.

  Speaker 5: I couldn't get myself together. I was just like I'm
• 19:59
  Speaker 5: you know, and it was yeah, and it's like I
• 20:04
  Speaker 5: by passed him being dressed, getting ready to go to
• 20:07
  Speaker 5: the back. It's a hand that I saw, and I'm like, boy,
• 20:13
  Speaker 5: you know, and then he goes text me back talk
• 20:15
  Speaker 5: about l Oel because that's my toy, and boy, you know,
• 20:19
  Speaker 5: I don't care about none of that. That's my mom, yeah, granny.
• 20:27
  Speaker 5: And I can't say nothing bad about their granny, honey,
• 20:30
  Speaker 5: because that yeah, that's they granny and that's it. And
• 20:35
  Speaker 5: granny can't do no wrong in they eyes.
• 20:38
  Speaker 4: She couldn't.
• 20:39
  Speaker 5: I was, you know, she yeah, my mama definitely is his.
• 20:46
  Speaker 5: There's a picture of him and like my mom when
• 20:49
  Speaker 5: she was really younger. I put them side by side
• 20:52
  Speaker 5: together and they look so much a light to where
• 21:00
  Speaker 5: his girlfriend thought that it was him. And this picture
• 21:05
  Speaker 5: was from of my mother was like back in the
• 21:09
  Speaker 5: seventies when she was in her and was in like
• 21:15
  Speaker 5: twenty seventeen eighteen of my son and he had just
• 21:21
  Speaker 5: twisting his hair. So this is just how like that.
• 21:26
  Speaker 5: It's just yeah, and so.
• 21:29
  Speaker 6: It's while I got heah. But even even my picture
• 21:33
  Speaker 6: of my my doctor mom, TARNI was to then she
• 21:36
  Speaker 6: said that's the.
• 21:38
  Speaker 4: Mother and I'm like, no, that's my mother, yes, what
• 21:41
  Speaker 4: you know. She's like, nah, y'all look alike, and I'm like,
• 21:44
  Speaker 4: you know, when they tell you, I take it.
• 21:48
  Speaker 5: After a while, when you've been with somebody, they say,
• 21:50
  Speaker 5: if you feed.
• 21:51
  Speaker 6: Him long enough, you start say the same thing.

  Speaker 4: So I'm looking like you and she had me if
• 21:57
  Speaker 4: I was two and a half. I mean, I can
• 22:00
  Speaker 4: tell you your adopted two more when I tell you,
• 22:02
  Speaker 4: nobody can really tell our family has adoption in the family,
• 22:05
  Speaker 4: because everybody looks like somebody connected it. And it's like
• 22:09
  Speaker 4: the craziest thing. How God does that. And that's another
• 22:11
  Speaker 4: reason why I wanted to write the book was because
• 22:14
  Speaker 4: everybody's adoption story is not the same.
• 22:16
  Speaker 6: Everybody is completely different.
• 22:20
  Speaker 4: And to be able to share mind in the way
• 22:22
  Speaker 4: that I'm able to share it, it's a blessing to
• 22:25
  Speaker 4: me because these people, my parents did not have to
• 22:28
  Speaker 4: take me in. They did not have to take a child,
• 22:32
  Speaker 4: especially that they didn't know what was going to happen,
• 22:35
  Speaker 4: how it was going to turn out, who they was
• 22:37
