- 0:00Speaker 1: Previously on The Chosen People Eight years had passed. Josiah,
- 0:06Speaker 1: now a young man, knelt alone in a patch of moonlight,
- 0:11Speaker 1: murmuring halting prayers to a god who remained silent.
- 0:15Speaker 2: Yahweh, if you're truly there, please say something. Anything.
- 0:20Speaker 3: I will not pray to Molech, or Baal, or Ashtaroth.
- 0:25Speaker 2: I seek you. Please. Please. Help me to find you.
- 0:31Speaker 2: My king, we have found something.
- 0:34Speaker 3: Something hidden deep beneath the ruins of the Temple of Solomon.
- 0:39Speaker 1: The room stilled, breathless. And then... In.
- 0:44Speaker 3: The beginning, God created the heavens and the earth.
- 0:51Speaker 1: The words landed like stones, each syllable striking deeper, heavier. Then... Finally,
- 1:00Speaker 1: Josiah raised his gaze to Hilkiah, his voice raw, scraping
- 1:06Speaker 1: against his throat like the edge of a blade.
- 1:10Speaker 2: Find me a prophet.
- 1:17Speaker 1: Josiah couldn't sleep. His dreams were filled with serpents, floods,
- 1:23Speaker 1: bloody rivers, and fire. He had been up all night,
- 1:28Speaker 1: The scroll opened before him, hands gripping its edges like
- 1:33Speaker 1: it might vanish if he let go. He had read
- 1:36Speaker 1: it until the words blurred, but he could still see
- 1:40Speaker 1: it when he closed his eyes. He had read of
- 1:43Speaker 1: Yahweh's faithfulness, his mercy, his wrath. He had read of
- 1:49Speaker 1: covenants made and broken, of a love so fierce it
- 1:54Speaker 1: burned through mountains, split seas, brought plagues, cast down kings.
- 2:01Speaker 1: He had read the story of his people, traced their
- 2:05Speaker 1: failures like scars across the parchment, and somewhere in those
- 2:09Speaker 1: words he had begun to understand, not just the judgment,
- 2:15Speaker 1: but the love behind it. the love that they had betrayed.
- 2:21Speaker 1: The chamber was dark when she arrived. The torches burned low,
- 2:26Speaker 1: their embers licking at the shadows, illuminating Hilkiah, Shaphan, and
- 2:32Speaker 1: the few others who had come with him. They stood
- 2:35Speaker 1: at a distance, unsure if they should be here at all.
- 2:40Speaker 1: Josiah stood as Huldah entered. She did not bow. She
- 2:45Speaker 1: was not the kind of woman who bent before kings.
- 2:49Speaker 1: She walked with slow certainty, the confidence of someone who
- 2:54Speaker 1: had nothing to prove. She was wrapped in plain robes, unadorned,
- 2:59Speaker 1: her graying hair falling loose around her shoulders. Her eyes, dark, sharp, unrelenting,
- 3:07Speaker 1: studied him like she was peeling back his skin to
- 3:10Speaker 1: see what was underneath. She stopped a few paces away,
- 3:15Speaker 1: crossed her arms, and let the silence settle before speaking.
- 3:22Speaker 3: You sent for a prophet.
- 3:25Speaker 1: Josiah straightened, exhaustion heavy in his bones, the scroll still
- 3:30Speaker 1: clenched in his hands.
- 3:32Speaker 2: Tell me what the Lord says.
- 3:35Speaker 1: Huldah's head tilted slightly, a flicker of something. Pity? Amusement?
- 3:42Speaker 1: It was hard to tell.
- 3:44Speaker 3: Do you think you're the first king to kneel in fear?
- 3:49Speaker 3: Many men have sought the Lord's will, then rejected it
- 3:52Speaker 3: moments later. Like a man who sees his reflection and
- 3:56Speaker 3: then forgets what he looks like. I.
- 3:58Speaker 2: I understand. But I find that I do not forget
- 4:03Speaker 2: things easily. No matter how hard I try.
- 4:06Speaker 1: The prophetess smirked at that, then sighed.
- 4:12Speaker 3: This is what the Lord says. Look, I am going
- 4:17Speaker 3: to bring disaster on this place and its inhabitants. Every
- 4:21Speaker 3: curse written in the book that the king of Judah
- 4:23Speaker 3: has read because they have forsaken me and burnt incense
- 4:27Speaker 3: to other gods, provoking me with the idols their hands
- 4:30Speaker 3: have made. My anger will be poured out on this
- 4:34Speaker 3: place and will not be quenched.
- 4:38Speaker 1: A long, silent stretch between them. Finally, She exhaled, and
- 4:44Speaker 1: when she spoke again, her voice was lower and colder,
- 4:48Speaker 1: the weight of inevitability pressing down with every word. It
- 4:53Speaker 1: is too late, Josiah.
- 4:55Speaker 3: The judgment is sealed.
- 4:57Speaker 1: Something inside King Josiah recoiled. His jaw tightened, his grip
- 5:03Speaker 1: on the scroll turning his knuckles white.
- 5:05Speaker 2: No, no, that cannot be... I've read the law. I.
- 5:11Speaker 3: You think one righteous man can erase the sins of
- 5:14Speaker 3: a thousand?
- 5:16Speaker 1: Her words landed heavy, knocking the breath from his chest.
- 5:21Speaker 1: She did not say it with cruelty. She did not
- 5:24Speaker 1: need to. Truth did the wounding for her.
- 5:28Speaker 3: The Lord has been patient. He has sent prophets. He
- 5:33Speaker 3: has sent warnings. Your fathers refused to listen. Your grandfathers
- 5:39Speaker 3: did not listen. Judah has spilled innocent blood into the streets,
- 5:44Speaker 3: has bowed to gods that do not speak, do not see,
- 5:48Speaker 3: do not care. You have made offerings to stone and fire,
- 5:53Speaker 3: and you wonder why the heavens have turned silent?
- 5:57Speaker 1: Josiah breathed hard, his pulse roaring in his ears. He
- 6:01Speaker 1: shook his head, eyes burning.
- 6:04Speaker 2: I have served the Lord since he first called me.
- 6:07Speaker 3: And how do you know he has called you?
- 6:10Speaker 1: The question hung between them. Josiah's lips parted, but the
- 6:15Speaker 1: answer felt too complicated to be spoken plainly, so he
- 6:19Speaker 1: said it differently.
- 6:20Speaker 2: I swear to you, I've heard the echoes of a voice,
- 6:24Speaker 2: like a dream, but can't remember. Something I've known ever
- 6:30Speaker 2: since I was a boy, like a word... On the
- 6:34Speaker 2: tip of my tongue.
- 6:35Speaker 3: Yes, that word is Yahweh.
- 6:39Speaker 1: Josiah's breath hitched. She stepped closer, lowering her voice, her
- 6:44Speaker 1: gaze pinning him like a nail through wood.
- 6:48Speaker 3: Do you think he does not grieve, Josiah? Do you
- 6:52Speaker 3: think he does not love?
- 6:54Speaker 1: Josiah's throat tightened.
- 6:57Speaker 3: This judgment is not the rage of a tyrant. It
- 7:01Speaker 3: is the heartbreak of a father whose children have thrown
- 7:04Speaker 3: themselves into danger. You call it wrath. But what is
- 7:10Speaker 3: wrath if not love betrayed? If not justice for the oppressed,
- 7:14Speaker 3: for the children who screamed as they burned?
- 7:18Speaker 1: There was a long silence. Josiah felt his own heartbeat
- 7:23Speaker 1: in his ears, the weight of everything crashing down upon him,
- 7:27Speaker 1: the understanding slicing him open. His kingdom was doomed, but
- 7:34Speaker 1: Yahweh had not stopped loving them. He closed his eyes
- 7:38Speaker 1: for a moment, then opened them, his resolve hardening into
- 7:42Speaker 1: something fierce.
- 7:43Speaker 2: Then I will burn their gods before they burn my people.
- 7:48Speaker 1: Halda exhaled, almost smiling. Not approval, not quite, but something
- 7:55Speaker 1: close to understanding. She turned, already walking toward the door.
- 8:01Speaker 3: Thus says the Lord, the God of Israel, regarding the
- 8:04Speaker 3: words you have heard. Because your heart was tender and
- 8:08Speaker 3: you humbled yourself before God when you heard what he
- 8:11Speaker 3: spoke against this place and its people, and because you
- 8:14Speaker 3: humbled yourself before me and tore your clothes and wept
- 8:17Speaker 3: before me, I have heard you, declares the Lord. Behold,
- 8:23Speaker 3: I will gather you to your fathers and you will
- 8:25Speaker 3: be gathered to your grave in peace. Your eyes will
- 8:29Speaker 3: not see all the disaster I will bring on this
- 8:32Speaker 3: place and on its inhabitants.
- 8:34Speaker 1: She did not look back. Josiah stood in the flickering torchlight,
- 8:40Speaker 1: breath heavy, fists clenched, staring at the shadows on the stone.
- 8:46Speaker 1: He knew what he had to do. The Fire Raged
- 8:56Speaker 1: Not like before, not as an altar. The fire wasn't
- 9:00Speaker 1: built for a hungry false god demanding children's screams. It
- 9:05Speaker 1: was an inferno of reckoning, cleansing. The valley of Hinnom
- 9:10Speaker 1: now burned with righteous fury. The drums of war pounded
- 9:15Speaker 1: a steady, relentless heartbeat beneath the cacophony of cracking stone
- 9:20Speaker 1: and splintering idols. Soldiers roared as they heaved the obscene,
- 9:25Speaker 1: leering statues of Moloch into the blaze. The golden effigy,
- 9:32Speaker 1: the one with its arms outstretched, its metal hands where
- 9:36Speaker 1: infants had once been placed before being devoured by flames,
- 9:40Speaker 1: toppled like a decayed tree. It was sent crashing into
- 9:45Speaker 1: the pit with an unholy shriek as fire consumed it.
- 9:50Speaker 1: Josiah stood before it all, face carved from iron. His
- 9:56Speaker 1: torn robes whipped in the wind. His eyes dark. hollow, seething,
- 10:01Speaker 1: did not blink as the flames licked higher, devouring the past.
- 10:07Speaker 1: He had stood here once before, when he was a child, powerless,
- 10:14Speaker 1: forced to watch infants set ablaze for Molech, never again.
- 10:19Speaker 1: A priest of Moloch staggered forward from the crowd, half mad, soot-streaked,
- 10:25Speaker 1: eyes wild with defiance. He raised trembling hands, voice raw
- 10:31Speaker 1: with desperation.
- 10:33Speaker 2: What is the meaning of this? You dare defile our
- 10:36Speaker 2: sacred grounds?
- 10:37Speaker 1: Josiah turned slowly. A movement from the wind uncovered something
- 10:43Speaker 1: at his feet. White, brittle, fragile.
- 10:47Speaker 2: Bones.
- 10:49Speaker 1: Tiny, hollow-boned remains. The bones of the children. His breath caught.
- 10:57Speaker 1: For a moment, the fire was behind him again. For
- 11:01Speaker 1: a moment, he was five years old, staring up at
- 11:04Speaker 1: the flame-lit faces of his father's priests, the smell of
- 11:08Speaker 1: burning flesh in his nostrils. His father's hand, firm around
- 11:13Speaker 1: his tiny wrist, holding him there, forcing him to watch.
- 11:18Speaker 1: Josiah's fist clenched. He moved before he knew he had moved.
- 11:24Speaker 1: A single hand shot out and wrapped around the priest's throat.
- 11:28Speaker 1: The man gurgled, hands clawing uselessly at Josiah's grip. The
- 11:33Speaker 1: king pulled him toward the fire pit, the flames reflecting
- 11:38Speaker 1: in his hollowed-out eyes. But your father.
- 11:44Speaker 2: I have no father but the Lord.
- 11:47Speaker 1: And with that, he let go. The priest tumbled, screaming,
- 11:53Speaker 1: into the pit. The flames swallowed him whole. Josiah did
- 11:59Speaker 1: not look away. Behind him, his soldiers lifted the corpses
- 12:04Speaker 1: of the false priests and cast them after their master.
- 12:08Speaker 1: Their ashes mingled with those of the children they had slain.
- 12:12Speaker 1: The fire belonged to the Lord now. Josiah rode through
- 12:21Speaker 1: the ruins of Bethel, his horse's hooves kicking up dust.
- 12:25Speaker 1: The altar of Jeroboam stood there still, old, cracked, and
- 12:30Speaker 1: yet somehow still defiant. Centuries ago, a nameless prophet had
- 12:36Speaker 1: stood before this altar and cried out that one day
- 12:40Speaker 1: a king from the house of David would tear it down,
- 12:44Speaker 1: that a son of David would burn the bones of
- 12:46Speaker 1: its false priests upon it, Josiah dismounted. His men watched
- 12:52Speaker 1: as he approached the crumbling altar, stepping over shattered idols
- 12:57Speaker 1: and remnants of forgotten gods. He placed a hand on
- 13:01Speaker 1: the stone. It was warm beneath his palm, as if
- 13:05Speaker 1: it had absorbed the sins of those who worshipped here.
- 13:09Speaker 1: Josiah turned to his men and nodded once. The soldiers
- 13:13Speaker 1: dragged sacks of human bones. Remains of the very priests
- 13:18Speaker 1: who had offered sacrifices here generations ago. One by one,
- 13:23Speaker 1: they were emptied onto the altar. Josiah did not flinch
- 13:27Speaker 1: as he watched them burn. Then, just as he turned
- 13:32Speaker 1: to leave, his eyes caught something. A lone tomb, untouched
- 13:37Speaker 1: by the destruction. He frowned.
- 13:40Speaker 2: Who is buried here?
- 13:41Speaker 1: A soldier stepped forward, hesitant.
- 13:45Speaker 2: A prophet, my king?
- 13:46Speaker 1: The one who foretold your coming. They say he spoke
- 13:50Speaker 1: of you by name long before you.
- 13:54Speaker 2: Were even born.
- 13:57Speaker 1: Josiah hesitated. The weight of prophecy, of time itself, pressed
- 14:03Speaker 1: down on him. The man who had spoken of this
- 14:07Speaker 1: day had been dead for centuries, and yet his words
- 14:11Speaker 1: had found him. For a long moment, Josiah said nothing.
- 14:16Speaker 2: Then, leave it untouched.
- 14:18Speaker 1: And with that, he turned and walked away, the fires
- 14:22Speaker 1: of Bethel burning in his wake. The temple glowed under torchlight,
- 14:30Speaker 1: full of the sound of solemn singing. The Passover had returned.
- 14:35Speaker 1: For the first time in generations, the people gathered not
- 14:39Speaker 1: in pretense, but in reverence. There were no golden calves,
- 14:44Speaker 1: no incense to Baal, no groves to Asherah. There was
- 14:49Speaker 1: only the Lord. And Josiah, standing before the altar, quiet, focused,
- 14:56Speaker 1: older than his years. The blood of lambs pooled around
- 15:00Speaker 1: the altar stones. The smoke of roasting meat curled upward
- 15:05Speaker 1: like prayer. The people ate, but not in celebration, in remembrance.
- 15:12Speaker 2: We do not feast tonight to escape death. We feast
- 15:16Speaker 2: because we have delayed it for a moment.
- 15:19Speaker 1: He raised the cup, not with triumph, but with trembling hands.
- 15:24Speaker 2: May this blood cover more than it did then.
- 15:28Speaker 1: They drank, and heaven stayed silent. The next morning, a
- 15:35Speaker 1: messenger rode hard from the north. He arrived at the
- 15:39Speaker 1: palace to find Josiah, his advisors, and Huldah, the prophetess,
- 15:43Speaker 1: at his side.
- 15:45Speaker 4: From Pharaoh Necho of Egypt to the king of Judah.
- 15:48Speaker 1: Josiah stood as Shaphan unrolled the scroll. His brow furrowed
- 15:53Speaker 1: as the foreign words were translated.
- 15:57Speaker 4: Lord Necho of Egypt declares, What quarrel is there, king
- 16:02Speaker 4: of Judah, between you and me? I do not come
- 16:05Speaker 4: against you today, but against the house with which I
- 16:08Speaker 4: am at war. God has commanded me to hurry. Stop
- 16:13Speaker 4: opposing God, who is with me, or he will destroy you.
- 16:19Speaker 1: The room fell into stunned silence. Josiah's jaw tensed, his
- 16:24Speaker 1: eyes narrowed.
- 16:25Speaker 2: God speaks through pharaohs now? No. God speaks through his word.
- 16:30Speaker 3: He speaks the truth, Josiah.
- 16:33Speaker 1: Josiah turned, wounded already.
- 16:36Speaker 2: He is Pharaoh, a butcher, a godless tyrant.
- 16:41Speaker 3: And yet, the Lord has used worse as his sword. Babylon, Assyria, Egypt.
- 16:46Speaker 1: Josiah turned away.
- 16:48Speaker 2: He desecrated our land, our children, our women. I read
- 16:53Speaker 2: the scrolls. I saw what they did.
- 16:56Speaker 3: Vengeance is not your calling. Restoration is. Stay out of
- 17:02Speaker 3: this war.
- 17:03Speaker 2: If I die... Let it be doing something.
- 17:10Speaker 1: The battlefield was loud, which made Josiah's silence all the louder.
- 17:16Speaker 1: Horses screamed, chariots thundered, bronze clashed against bone. But in
- 17:22Speaker 1: the hollowed-out space behind Josiah's eyes, there was only static.
- 17:28Speaker 1: A low, droning ache of doubt and memory tangled together.
- 17:33Speaker 1: He rode through the chaos wearing no crown. His armor
- 17:38Speaker 1: was plain, borrowed. His face shadowed beneath a warhood as
- 17:43Speaker 1: if anonymity could save him from prophecy. The Egyptian banners
- 17:47Speaker 1: rippled like fire down the hills. Judah's lines held, for now,
- 17:53Speaker 1: but Josiah wasn't watching. He gripped the reins, knuckles white,
- 17:58Speaker 1: eyes glassy, gaze not on the war, but on the
- 18:02Speaker 1: war within.
- 18:03Speaker 2: I wanted to do the right thing. I wanted to
- 18:06Speaker 2: burn the idols, tear down the groves, keep the blood
- 18:10Speaker 2: from our streets. I thought if I obeyed the scroll,
- 18:15Speaker 2: he would relent. But I disobeyed the voice of the prophet.
- 18:19Speaker 2: I ignored Hulda. I ignored Neko. Did I bail him?
- 18:26Speaker 1: He blinked, eyes suddenly full of sun. A soldier passed
- 18:30Speaker 1: him yelling orders, another fell screaming. The earth trembled beneath hooves.
- 18:36Speaker 1: Josiah barely heard it.
- 18:38Speaker 2: Maybe, maybe I wasn't meant to save Judah. Maybe I
- 18:43Speaker 2: was only meant to delay the fire. A breath, a pause,
- 18:48Speaker 2: before the end.
- 18:49Speaker 1: And then it happened. No trumpet, no flash, no divine sign.
- 18:56Speaker 1: just the cold, stupid reality of war. An archer, Egyptian,
- 19:02Speaker 1: probably not even aiming, let fly. The arrow soared unnoticed
- 19:08Speaker 1: until it buried itself in the king's side. Josiah gasped,
- 19:13Speaker 1: his spine arched, his hand flew to the shaft protruding
- 19:17Speaker 1: from his ribs. Blood pulsed hot and sudden. The world
- 19:22Speaker 1: snapped back into sound, deafening, blinding, real. His horse bucked.
- 19:29Speaker 1: He slid from the saddle. The ground hit like stone.
- 19:34Speaker 1: Josiah lay gasping, staring at the sky, so blue, so empty.
- 19:41Speaker 1: A young soldier rushed to him. No one else noticed.
- 19:45Speaker 1: The war was still happening. But here, in this small,
- 19:49Speaker 1: clear between chaos, eternity had slowed to a crawl. The
- 19:55Speaker 1: boy knelt, trying to press rags against the wound.
- 19:58Speaker 2: My king, hold on, please, hold on.
- 20:01Speaker 1: Josiah coughed, blood threading from the corner of his mouth.
- 20:05Speaker 1: His hand reached up, lightly, gently. grasping the soldier's wrist.
- 20:11Speaker 2: Who are you, son of.
- 20:13Speaker 1: The boy swallowed, trembling.
- 20:16Speaker 2: No one, my king. I... I'm an orphan.
- 20:19Speaker 1: Josiah smiled, not wide, not triumphant, but soft, like memory.
- 20:26Speaker 2: I was once an orphan, too.
- 20:29Speaker 1: His fingers squeezed the boy's hand.
- 20:32Speaker 4: But I.
- 20:33Speaker 2: found a new father.
- 20:35Speaker 1: Had that... The younger soldier wept openly now, holding the
- 20:40Speaker 1: king's hair in his lap, blood soaking through his tunic.
- 20:45Speaker 1: Josiah looked toward the sky again, and this time he
- 20:49Speaker 1: wasn't afraid. He began to speak, voice cracking, slowing, reverent.
- 20:55Speaker 2: The Lord is my shepherd. I shall not want my king.
- 21:01Speaker 2: He makes me lie down in green pastures. He leads
- 21:07Speaker 2: me beside still waters. He restores my soul.
- 21:15Speaker 1: Blood foamed in his throat. His voice was barely a
- 21:19Speaker 1: breath now.
- 21:20Speaker 2: Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow
- 21:24Speaker 2: of death, I will fear no evil.
- 21:29Speaker 1: Another pause. A long one. The soldier thought he was gone.
- 21:35Speaker 2: Then, For my father.
- 21:39Speaker 1: Is with me. He exhaled a slow final breath, and
- 21:47Speaker 1: then silence. The war raged on, but in that quiet
- 21:53Speaker 1: corner of Megiddo, the last good king lay still, and
- 21:59Speaker 1: somewhere beyond the veil of eternity... the good shepherd stood
- 22:04Speaker 1: waiting for his lamb to come home. Josiah was buried
- 22:10Speaker 1: with full honor. The streets wept, the priests tore their robes,
- 22:16Speaker 1: the singers composed laments that were sung for generations, and Huldah,
- 22:22Speaker 1: now veiled in mourning, stood by his tomb. She traced
- 22:28Speaker 1: her hand along the stone, closed her eyes, and spoke.
- 22:33Speaker 1: Not to the crowd, but to history.
- 22:38Speaker 3: He tried with all his heart. But no man can
- 22:42Speaker 3: save Judah. Not yet.
- 22:45Speaker 1: She looked up, toward the horizon, toward the future.
- 22:50Speaker 3: One day another king will come. Not with sword, but
- 22:54Speaker 3: with scars. He will not burn the idols. He will
- 22:57Speaker 3: burn in their place. The fire will fall on him instead,
- 23:02Speaker 3: and he will declare it to be good.
- 23:06Speaker 1: The wind picked up. Somewhere far off, a child cried.
- 23:12Speaker 1: And deep beneath the ground, the bones of the last
- 23:16Speaker 1: good king rested in peace. But his fire still burned.
