- Kiki George: What happens when the quest to prove a point takes a dark and twisted turn? This is the Minor Mischief Podcast and this is the mischievous tale of Monique and Bo Maestas. In the great words of Mr. Chance the rapper, and we back, and we back, and we back, and we back, and we back, and we back. Mm. This ain't no intro. This the entree. Hit that intro with Kanye and sound like Andre. Tryna turn my baby mama to my fiance. She likes music. She live from Houston like Auntie Yonsei. Man, my daughter couldn't have a better mother. Sorry, I had to. I had to. I had to. It wouldn't be right if I didn't. Anyway, hello. Hello. Hello. Hello. Hopefully everyone is having a decent year so far. I would like to say a great year, but bruh, adulting is so ghetto. Like this genuinely cannot be the same adulthood that our parents experienced. I used to be one of those people that watch the news every day to see what was going on in the world and just keep a pulse on reality. But now, mm mm, leave me out of it. Leave me out of it. Leave me far away from it. Leave me far beyond it respectfully. I I'm I'm good. I'm good. Also, how are your New Year's goals going? We still locked in? Are we still locked in? We still locked in? Are we? I'm still locked in. But baby, this is harder than weak old biscuits. Okay. I just want to bang it on the counter. I just cannot deal with life right now. So let's zone out with another true crime story, shall we? Also, is it sad that we zone out with true crime or is that totally okay? Either way, we're doing it. Anyway, thanks for tuning in to another week of the Minor Mischief Podcast. I'm your host, Mrs. Kiana Amir, and I got some really, really, really good feedback on last week's episode. And you guys have no idea how much your feedback helps. Seriously, you have no idea. Thank you for the comments, the encouragement, the push to keep it going because baby, I'm locked in. Okay. So today's story. Ciao. Today's story. You might want to go ahead and get a notebook, your favorite gel pen, Elisa Frank folder. Some post-its, index cards, whatever you need to take notes on these characters because this story is insane. So buckle up and hold on tight because I feel like your jaw will hit the floor multiple times during this true tale. So for today's story, let's travel over to Mesquite, Nevada. Mesquite is a town made primarily of retired people who wanted to get out of the hustle and bustle of Las Vegas. It's just about an hour, an hour and a half northeast of Vegas and straddles the Arizona state line. Some interesting facts about mesquite include the fact that the city was found by early Mormon pioneers and it houses some pretty good casinos. It was once called the fastest growing city in America with a population of about 24,000 people. Is that a lot of people? What's the average city population in the US? I'm just really curious and I don't know the answer to that question. But it was once called the fastest growing city in America. Anyway, so we are headed back to January 2003. And we are introduced to Monique Maestus and Bo Maestus, who are siblings and our mischief makers. And we are also introduced to Christiana Cowan and Britney Bergeron, who are the stars of our show, but also unfortunately are our victims. Monique Maestus was born on May 2nd, 1986, and Bo Maestus was born in 1983 in Utah to their parents Harry Mayestus and Marilyn Mayestus. They also have an older sister, Misty Mayestus. Now, Harry and Marilyn Myestus met while Marilyn was visiting some friends in prison, and Harry was serving one of his many sentences. Harry Maestus apparently was extremely violent and abusive to Moni to Marilyn, excuse me. Well, he was abusive to Monique too. And he spent pretty much the entirety of the kids' lives jumping in and out of prison. I was kind of confused on this part because par a lot of sources say that he abused Marilyn. But he was incarcerated for most of their relationship. Bo and Monique were conceived during weekend conjugal visits. Marilyn girl, I cannot believe you felt for the Okie doke and married that man. Like he was in prison, you met him in prison, conceived, married in prison, and endured abuse while he was in prison. Now, I was a little confused by that part because aren't they supposed to be like under surveillance? I mean, I guess not during conjugal visits, but nevertheless, even if it wasn't physical abuse, which I'm led to believe it was, emotional, mental, and financial abuse also is a real thing. And I personally take that just as seriously as I take physical abuse. So my boy Harry apparently was a twice convicted murderer. And his backstory goes that in 1967, Harry was convicted of an armed robbery. He was released after five years, and within a year and a half, he was arrested for the New Year's Eve murder of his then girlfriend, Rosemary Mitucci. Because apparently Rosemary was witness to the robbery and she snitched on him. And my thing is, Harry, you served your time for the armed robbery. You did the crime you served at the time. It is what it is. And why are you bringing Rosemary back into your shenanigans? Now you have more than aggravated robbery on your hands. You have a whole murder charge on your hands. But anyway, not too long after Rosemary's murder, Harry was picked up and charged with first-degree murder. But he ended up being convicted of the lesser charge of second-degree murder and was sentenced to five years to life in prison. But, spoiler alert, he was out after five years. You heard me right. Five years was all he served for Rosemary's murder. Now, while in prison, Harry apparently got into a fight with another inmate over some money that was owed. But the gag is Harry was the one that owed the money. How are you aggressive and wrong, Harry? How are you aggressive and wrong? So the guy walks up to Harry apparently while he was on the phone and asked about his money because Harry borrowed this money fair and square. And so the guy's like, Listen, you said I was gonna be repaid. I am still waiting for repayment and I am now coming to demand payment, as they do in prison, you know? And Harry repaid him all right by beating him up and allegedly sexually assaulting him. Yeah, you heard that right. Harry was eventually charged with the assault, but the sexual assault charges were dropped, so allegations. Harry also served time for allegedly murdering an inmate as well during this prison stay. He served time for parole violations. He served time for assault, battery. His rap sheet went on and on and on and on and on. And like baby, Harry lived a wild life. So while Harry was doing back to back bids, Marilyn was apparently doing the best she could as a single mom who works too hard, who loves her kids and never stops doing drugs, allegedly. Marilyn's twin sister, Carolyn, see what they did there? Marilyn and Carolyn. Carolyn said that Marilyn was just as bad of a mother with Harry at home and without Harry at home. Carolyn even told the story of how her best friend who lived in the same complex as them. And he would watch the kids occasionally when Marilyn was not home, which was often because she was out partying, getting drunk, hooking up with men, doing what she does. And you know, when she wasn't doing that, she was working. She was working. Apparently, Because the kids were home alone so much, he took the kids under his wing out of the kindness of his heart. And but he did that without Marilyn's permission. And Marilyn did not want him influencing her children because he was gay. So she got super pissed off and relayed her frustrations by skinning his cat and nailing its head to the front door. Harry and Marilyn, y'all. Eventually the feud between these two became so severe and so. Constant that the man decided just to end his own life to put him out of the misery. So that is the character of Bo and Monique's parents, Harry and Marilyn. So with Harry and Marilyn, Bo, Misty, and Monique endured a childhood full of abuse and neglect, being punished with severe beatings for things like not knowing how to tie their shoes or if a shoelace was in the closet and not properly tucked in. In their household, there were no hugs or I love you's, just punishment and ridicule. Misty Maestus, who is Bo and Monique's older sister, she went on record saying that insulting each other pretty much became their form of affection. Now, Bo Maestus was said to be smart but hyperactive, and he was said to have issues directing his anger. He was described as kind, but he had a short fuse. Harry and Marilyn were reportedly supposed to get him help for this, but decided to self-treat by blowing marijuana in his face to calm him down. By age 12, Bo began to self-medicate by using alcohol, weed, and meth to just numb that pain. And he was really doing what his parents taught him to do because they taught him that if you're feeling overwhelmed, you're feeling overstimulated, take some drugs. And so when he felt overwhelmed and he felt overstimulated, he took some drugs. Not saying he was right. I'm just saying that's what he was taught. Monique also began self-medicating with drugs and alcohol between her ninth and her thirteenth birthday to numb the pain from the sexual abuse she endured from her father and then by her mother's boyfriend during those years. Miss DMS disconfirmed Monique's allegations by revealing what Harry would do. and basically he would sexually abuse her in the waiting room of the prison while they were going to see him. So when Marilyn would take him The kids, I'm sorry. When Marilyn would take the kids to the prison on the weekends to see him, he would basically sexually abuse Misty, which makes me wonder if Marilyn was fully aware what was going on and just did not care or was afraid. I'm very curious because I'm sitting here like, how is he doing all of this in prison? The 70s and 80s were a wild time, I tell you, because I'm not saying that can't happen nowadays, because it definitely can. I'm just saying I feel like there are more. There's more surveillance nowadays, cause what? But I digress. Christiana Cowan was born on November 3rd, 1999, to David Cowan and Tamara Bergeron, who goes by Tammy. And she was born in Clack Clark County, Nevada. Clack County. Girl, get yourself together. Not much information is listed on Christiana's childhood, but she was said to love everybody and have a bright smile and sweet eyes. Brit Brittany Bergeron was born in 1992 to her parents Kevin Bergeron and Tammy Bergeron. There isn't much background information on Kevin, but Tammy, chow. Chow. Tammy was known for being a habitually unemployed drug user who left the girls alone to frequently get high on meth. Do you get high on meth or is it called something else? Like you know how with acid it's called like an acid trip. I don't know anything about meth except one time when I did some time on the psych ward. I'll do a whole story time on that later, I promise. Like it's a good story. But one time when I was at the psych ward, I got checked in for like a week. And one of the girls there, she wasn't my roommate, but we would like chill in the common area a lot because there was like a group of us and we just kind of bonded over that week. sh one of the girls there, she was attempting to get clean from meth, and my curious ass asked her what it was like to be on meth. And when I tell you Sis started drooling, she started like going back in time. Like sh it was the best feeling ever. I was like, my bad girl, I didn't mean to take you down memory lane. Like I'm so sorry. I do wonder how she's doing. Sorry. Anyway, Britney's early childhood years were tumultuous with being tossed back and forth between her parents, who were both struggling with drug and alcohol addiction, until she was about ten when her father, Kevin, got locked up for a D UI and Tammy and her new man. Let me tell you, Tammy and Marilyn was getting men, okay? But Tammy and her new man, Mr. Robert Schmidt, not great men, but they were getting men. Not even good men, just men. But Tammy and her new man, Mr. Robert Schmidt, packed up their trailer and moved from California because they had moved to California from Nevada. And so they're moving from California back to Nevada and they're going to take up residence in Mesquite. So Tammy and Robert moved their trailer to an RV park. right outside of the Casablanca Hotel Casino, which is known for its desert oasis theme, featuring beautiful pools and waterfalls, lush landscaping, award-winning golf courses, and you can get a room for as low as $90 a night, just to get a feel of the Casablanca Hotel. I looked at the rooms in like present day and I was like, okay. No judgment, no judgment. Judgment free zone. But so they were living right outside of the Casablanca and this worked out well for Tammy and Robert because they could go get high and they can gamble literally right near their home. They had a real, real, real, real bad gambling addiction. And according to one report, they allegedly spent over eighteen thousand dollars in a two month span at the Casablanca, which and I mean this in the most non judgmental way that I can possibly muster up. But where y'all get eighteen thousand dollars from? And this is not me poor shaming, because trust me, we are all, we are all just a paycheck away. Like we are all lack of income away. It's it's a real like it's a real problem. And I'm not poor shaming, I promise. And I do know that there are some people that live a very frugal lifestyle and have hundreds of thousands or millions of dollars in the bank. This is just not giving that. This is giving financial irresponsibility. It's giving if you had $18,000. Why are you at the Casablanca and why are your daughters home alone? It's giving. If you had eighteen thousand dollars to spend, why don't you hire a babysitter? It's giving. If you had eighteen thousand dollars to spend, I can go on and on. Nevertheless, that's what they like to do. So while Robert and Tammy were off getting drunk high and gambling, Britney was often left to be the caretaker over little Christiana, who she lovingly referred to as Kissy. It was said that when Kissy got hurt that Britney would be the one to kiss away the pain. She made sure that Kissy was bathed, fed, she had clean clothes, she had something in her belly, she had a comfortable place to lay at night. And she took the best care of her that a 10-year-old could, you know? One report said that Brittany one year missed three consecutive weeks of school to take care of Kissy. I don't know if Kissy was sick or if mom was just unable to be there and she just did not want her to be at home alone. I'm not sure, but That right there is just incredibly heartbreaking to me because it should not be the responsibility of a 10-year-old to be taking care of her three-year-old sister. Not to mention this had been going on for some time. So she had probably been taking care of her since she was newborn and she just became a motherly role to her. I did read a source that said that whenever they were hurt or they scraped their knee or burned themselves on the stove, like they didn't call out for mom to help. They called out to each other. So Kissy would call out to Britney and Britney would pretty much self-console and love on Kissy, you know, to make herself feel better, which is wild to me. Their neighbor at the time, a woman named Duranda Phillips, said that more often than not, the girls were left home alone when Robert and Tammy were out. So now we're in the wee hours of the morning of January 22nd, 2003. Robert and Tammy are out at the casino. What's new? And Britney and Kizzy are at home curled up in front of the TV until they fall asleep. Bo and Monique had driven down from Utah because they were living in Utah at the time. They did move back and forth from Utah to Nevada and back to Utah, but they were primarily in Utah. They had attended a party earlier that night and they were really feeling themselves. Like they were, you know, you know that post-party feeling. Like when you've been out, you're feeling good. You had a couple drinks, did whatever else you're into. For me, it's a couple drinks. And you're just like in a great mood and you're just like, okay, dang, the party has ended. But I'm still, I'm still in the mood to party. Like they were looking for a good old after party. And they were really feeding to keep the good times going and they were trying to find some more meth. So they hit up a relatively well known meth dealer. Her name is Desiree Town, which is crazy. Cause when I read the news report, it was just like well known meth dealer, Desiree Town. And I'm like, Desiree now, girl. If you are a well known meth dealer, why are you talking to the news? Why are you talking to the news, Desiree? Like, hello? But this I'm glad she did because this helped me out with our story a lot. Because she was able to say where they were before this all happened. So Desiree this night was apparently short on supply and she told Bo and Monique she would not be able to supply them. And then Bo turned to her and was just like, you know the lady that sells meth out of that white firebird with the yellow bumper? See this right here? This right here is why I always say I do not want a unique car. I used to want a yellow Chevy Camaro so so bad. Like I could see myself in it. I was like, I'm gonna get the windows tinted. I was living in Florida at the time, so you can pretty much do presidential tint in Florida and it'd be totally legal. And I just wanted a yellow Camaro, presidential tents, Tweety Bird mats, because Tweety Bird's my favorite. And I looked at that car at the lot for months and months and months. And I eventually was, I mean, I was young at the time and did not have the finances or credit to get that car on my own. And so my kids' grandparents at the time, I only had one child at this time, but my son's grandparents at the time. bought me a different car. Shout out to y'all. That car took me through a couple years. but I wanted that car so bad. And I figured it would be just my luck that somebody would see that car flying down the highway and know it's me. Or I would run a red light and they would be like, there go that girl with the yellow Camaro. Cause I lived in Daytona Beach at the time. Daytona Beach is as big as a penny. They would they would know. The people would know. The people of Daytona Beach would know that it was me. It was Kiana and that yellow Camaro. So I got a black car and no one knew. But anyway, so Bo is turning over to Desiree and he's just like, Listen, you know that lady with the white fire bird with the yellow bumper? And Desiree was like, you mean Tammy? Yeah, Tammy, she stays at the Casablanca. Like, I'm sure you'll be able to find her and her husband there. She she'll be there. Just go over there, walk around, you'll see her. Trust me. And so over to the Casablanca they went. And they did find Tammy there. They found Tammy and Robert there gambling, doing what they do, spend money doing drugs, drinking and smoking. And so they purchased $125 worth of meth from them and then they head out of the casino and they go back to their car because they're like, baby, we are about to get Sure, they were excited. They're like, I don't know how much meth $125 will buy you, but I know, and this was in 2003. So I am sure that they probably did cartwheels at that casino because they were like, my gosh, we're about to have a great night. They were wrong. The siblings get back to their car thinking, you know, they're in for a treat, and they discover that they were sold salt. That's right, guys. Plain salt instead of the meth that they paid for. So at this point, they are. Pissed. They are pissed. There are certain things that you do not play about. Money and drugs are definitely pretty high up on that list. So Bo and Monique go storming. They go storming. Like they are mad. They are big mad. They are stomping with their combat boots back into the casino to confront Richard and Tammy. And as stated earlier, Tammy does not mess around. So of course, she's not backing down, even though she was in the wrong, wrong and strong. And she stands up to Bo and was like, I suggest you get out of here, boy, because I don't mind things getting ugly. And Bo was like, I don't give a damn. Because guess what? My parents raised me to pretty much go off. So you want to get mad, we can get mad. You want to tussle, we can tussle, and we can go fight together. So nobody is backing down. And so Tammy is like, I'm not giving you your money back. And just enjoy getting ripped off. And Bo is madder than a wet hen. So they are screaming and yelling in this casino and they are getting into a heated exchange. I did not see any reports of any fist throwing, but it caused enough ruckus for security to notice. So security comes down and they're just like, You two are not even 21. You aren't even 18. Because at the time of the story, Monique is just 16 years old and Bo had just turned 19. So they're like, you guys get out. You don't even belong here. Like, get out. It's like it's almost midnight. What what are you doing here? Get out. So they kicked them out of the casino and Monique and Bo are outside of the casino fuming. They are piping mad, like they are cussing. Like if they could probably punch air and bricks, they would. I'm sure if they could have blown the place up, they would have. So it was then they come up with a plan to make Richard and Tammy pay. So they get in the car, they drive over to Bo's girlfriend at the time. Her name is Sabrina Bantham. She's 20 years old. Now, Bo and Sabrina had been dating on and off for about two years. And, you know, I I'm I have never claimed to be the best at math, you know. I I passed, you know, I I was on a role all my life. Praise the Lord. But math was always a subject I struggled with. But I'm just like, if you're 18, I'm sorry, she's 20. If she's 20. Okay, maybe the math does math. But he was underage when they started dating. So she's 20. She would have been 18 at the time, and he would have been sixteen or seventeen. He was underage. Sabrina, but I digressed. so they head over to Sabrina's house and they're just like, Do you have something sharp like some scissors or a knife or just something that we can cut with? And they told her what happened. They're just like, Listen, we went over to these people, we went over to buy some math. They sold us freaking salt. They're in this casino living it up. I just paid her 125 dollars, like. I mean, they're mad. And so Sabrina gave them two knives from her kitchen and she gets in the car with them and she's just like, Well, you know, let's now Sabrina did say that she didn't get in the car with them to fight or to cause any problems, but she said that she just did not want Bo to get in any trouble because of how angry he was. She was just like, he was just very out of character, and I just wanted to be with him because I did not want him to do anything stupid. So Sabrina gets in the car with them. And they drive back over to the Casablanca. So shortly before 1 a.m., they arrive at the mobile home park that Richard and Tammy's trailer resided at. And again, if you have a unique car and you park it outside of your home, it won't be hard to figure out where you live. And also remember that the trailer is like literally, it's damn near in front of the casino because the Casablanca is like a stone's throw away from their trailer. So they park in the employee parking so that their car can't be seen from the trailer. And then Bo gets out of the car and tells Sabrina to honk if she sees Richard or Tammy pull up. So Bo walks over to the front door and he knocks on the door. Brittany comes to the door and he asks her to come with him. And she refuses because she's like, My mom told me never to walk off with a stranger. I don't know you. I don't trust you. Please get off of my doorstep. I'm going back to bed. So Bo walks away and Britney goes back to bed, thinking that's the end of it, right? Wrong. Bo goes back into the car and he is like he is just getting more and more enraged because enraged, excuse me, because the night is just not going the way that he wanted it to. Like he should have been high by now. He should have been laid out in the backseat of that car. He should have been unknown to society right now. And here he is sober as hell with no money. And this little girl won't let him in the trailer. So Monique at this point decides to take matters into her own hands and she walks up to the trailer herself. She walks up to the door and she knocks. And Britney walks back to the door, which I really wish she sh I really wish she didn't. I really wish she didn't. Because someone knocked on the door, they were a stranger. You hear a knock less than ten minutes later, like, Why are you walking back to the door? Why are you walking back to the door, Brittany? It's almost one AM in the morning. Your parents are not home. But also she's ten years old. She should not be at home. Alone at 1 a.m. with her three year old sister while her mom is off gambling, ripping people off for meth, money, and probably high her damn self. But I guess she thought it was safe because she was less than two minutes away from home. I don't know. I really have no idea. But regardless, Britney answers the door and Monique tells her that her mom's in trouble. She's like, Hey, your mom is in trouble. This is an emergency. I need you to come with me right away. So Britney's like, my gosh, my mom? And she opens the door and turns around to get her shoes. And as she turns around, Bo sneaks up on her, grabs her from behind, and she starts screaming. She is screaming, hoping that anyone hears her. And he places his hands over her mouth. He tells her, We can do this the easy way, or we can do this the hard way. And you know what Brittany said? We're gonna do this the hard way because my mama ain't raised no punk. So she starts fighting back. She is punching and kicking and scratching and biting at Bo. And Monique jumps in at this point and they both start punching her. So Britney starts inching towards the bedroom because she's like, if they're gonna do this to me, they're gonna hurt Kissy. And I need to, I I she won't be able to fight back. She's not me. So at this point, Bo reaches for a knife and heads toward Kissy and he begins stabbing her. And Monique begins stabbing Britney. For eight long minutes, Bo and Monique are stabbing the girls repeatedly and then they run out out of the trailer park and back into the car because they knew that the police would be there shortly. By Sabrina's account, Bo and Monique come into the car covered in blood. At this point, she's in the driver's seat because remember they told her to honk if anyone pulled up. So she drives them to their grandmother's house to get cleaned up. And on the drive, Monique was saying that she repeatedly stabbed Britney in the torso and back so that she would hit a major organ. She also said that Monique said she should have sliced her neck and just ended it right there, but she was afraid to. And Bo just said, I stabbed the little one in the head. They got to their grandma's house, got cleaned up, got bat and back in the car, driving towards Salt Lake City, and disposed of their clothing and weapons on the roof of a gas station in Fillmore, Utah. Eventually, police did catch up with the trio as they were driving, and they arrested Bo and Monique once they got the car pulled over. And at this point, Sabrina began to sing. Like Jennifer Hudson and Dream Girls. She told the police everything. She said, Y'all may have dragged me into this, but I'm not going down with this ship. And although Sabrina did provide the weapons and she was the getaway driver, she faced no charges. Meanwhile, while Sabrina was singing like the cage bird, Robert and Tamley finally stumble home after their night. And they find a bloody mess waiting for them in the trailer. They immediately called 911 and Officer Bradley Swanson responded to the scene. When he arrived, he found an unresponsive Christiana laying in her grandmother's arms and Brittany laying in the living room covered in blood. When asked what happened, because Brittany was at this point fading in and out of consciousness, but she remembered what happened. And she told him a 20-year-old man came in and did this to her before she completely fell unconscious and everything went black. Kizzy had multiple stab wounds to the back, neck, and head. She was ported to have a gaping hole in her back from being stabbed so many times. And Britney was stabbed a total of 20 times, with one of the stab wounds missing her heart by mere centimeters. Britney and Kizzy were both taken to the University Medical Center where they both were rushed into emergency surgery. Kisszy unfortunately did not make it through her surgery and was pronounced dead shortly thereafter. Brittany did have a successful surgery, and she woke up the next morning immediately asking for her sister. Unfortunately, the police at that time did have to inform her of Kizzy's passing. And they said baby girl wailed. She wailed. She cried one of those gut-wrenching, like guttural cries that just world shattering, world ending. Like she was not okay. And I honestly could not imagine being in their position having to break the news to her or being in her position knowing that I started the night watching my sister. We were watching TV. We were fine. And I wake up and she's gone. It's just unbelievable. Brittany, although she did survive her attack, she was left paraplegic as a result of a stab wound to her vertebral column. She said that one of the first things she thought when she woke up was, my God, have my legs been cut off? I can't feel them. Ugh. Lord Jesus. Armed with the information given to them by Sabrina, police go to question Bo and Monique about exactly what happened that night. Because at first they denied any wrongdoing. But then not only did they inform them that they have a statement from Sabrina, the crime scene was covered in their DNA, and Brittany was awake and able to talk and able to point them out. They went ahead and confessed to everything. Bo first said that he acted alone and then he admitted that Monique was there. And Monique Monique pinned everything on Bo. She denied any involvement in the crime. And then they hit her with the girl, Bo already confessed. We know what happened. He told us what happened. And you know what Monique did? Deny, deny, deny. What did Dave Chappelle say? I plead the one, two, three, four, fit. Monique was not. She was not. However, they did have enough evidence against her to charge her anyway. So both Bo and Monique were charged with one count of murder, one count of attempted murder. burglary and use of a deadly weapon. Monique did receive an additional charge of conspiracy to commit murder because she did tell Sabrina that she should have just slit Britney's throat. Christiana was buried at the Woodlawn Cemetery in Las Vegas after a very, very well, I'm not even gonna say it very, very long. It was about a month long battle about what to do with her body. David and Tammy could not agree on what to do with her. David wanted Chrissy to be Buried in California. Tammy wanted her to be cremated. And David did eventually win that battle, but he was unable to bury Kissy in California. And apparently, Tammy was awarded a lock of her blonde hair. Brittany reportedly did not attend her sister's funeral, but did participate by writing a poem to be added to the program. While in jail awaiting trial, Bo wrote multiple letters to his alleged prison bay. Her name was Amy because. Him and Sabrina were not together anymore. Sabrina sang. She did what she had to do and she washed her hands of the situation. And she wasn't holding him down for Nathan. Okay. Nothing in this world was gonna keep her with him. In the letters, he pretty much he pretty much confessed. He told Amy about the botch drug deal. He told her that he pretty much flipped out and killed the lady's youngest daughter. He said that he pr the older one was paralyzed. He also wrote letters to Monique admitting to quote slaughtering the little piggies. He also told Monique that when she gets out, because remember, Monique didn't technically kill anybody. So Bo figured that she would get off not scot-free, but that she would have way less time than he would. And so he wrote a letter to Monique and said, listen, when you get out, you should knock Sabrina's teeth out, kick her lips off, rip her tongue out. And wipe your ass with it. And this was a direct quote. Direct quote. Both letters, actually all of his letters, because he's in jail. All letters were intercepted by a guard, dummy. And they were, you know, maybe I shouldn't call him dumb. He was young. But like, bruh, seriously, why would you be writing that in a letter that has to go through channels to get to where you want it to be? Someone is going to read it. And it's going to make things look worse on you. But again, he was 19 years old. He was relatively young. And so, yeah, it just was not a smart move. But the letters were intercepted by prison personnel and used against Bo at trial. Bo initially went to trial in 2005, but the initial jury could not reach a verdict and his trial was declared a mistrial. Monique Myestus eventually faced reality. She faced the music. And she pled guilty in October 2006 before Judge Donald Mosley, who sentenced her to 47 years to life at her sentencing hearing. Bo Maestus went back to trial in 2006 and pled guilty to the murders before the same Judge Donald Mosley. During a four-day-long penalty hearing, autopsy photos of Kissy were showed before the jury. It was said that each of the jury members winced when they saw them. Bo stared at his shoes the entire time. He did not look up, he did not look at the pictures, he did not look at his lawyer, he did not look at the judge. He stared at his shoes the entire time. He did not want to deal. Officer Brad Swanson, who was the responding officer that night, testified in tears to what he witnessed. He said, Ugh, this is gonna be a hard read. She, talking about Britney, didn't want to die. And I told her she was not going to die, and I was here to help her. And he Pride during his entire testimony. My heart always goes out to like police officers who respond to these types of things because yes, it's like in a way you signed up for this, but nothing could prepare you to walk into a crime scene where a 10-year-old girl is fighting for her life and a three-year-old girl is unresponsive, and then you find out later that she died. There's nothing in this world that can prepare you for that. I'm sorry. And he's gonna need a lot of therapy. That's all I'm gonna say about that. Sabrina also testified to what I described earlier. In an interesting twist, though, she said that this was all Monique's idea. And Bo was just kind of following along with what his sister wanted to do. She described Monique as the brainchild of the operation. She said that she was manipulative and vindictive and she knew what to say. To get Bo to bend to what she wanted to do. She said Monique even asked Bo as they were driving back to Utah, What are we gonna do about Sabrina? She said Bo did not answer Monique, and he made every effort to protect her that night. Sabrina said she knew that Bo had an issue with drugs and alcohol, but she had never seen him act violently toward her or anyone else. This was all challenged, of course, by the letter that Bo wrote, Mo Monique. That I mentioned earlier. Bo's defense attorney Tom Erickson and Jim Moronos painted a picture of Bo as a child who was just a victim to his circumstances. They brought up his horrific past and mental health issues, including an attempt to take his own life at the age of twelve. He just had so much stacked against him. They agreed that he should serve some time, but they wanted his past to be taken into consideration. Harry and Marilyn were asked to testify on behalf of their children, and neither of them. Neither of them showed up to court. Harry went on record saying, quote, I want nothing to do with these people. End quote. And by these people, he meant the children that he spent years sexually and physically and verbally and mentally and financially abusing these people. That's what he called them. I want nothing to do with these people, is what he said after he pretty much shaped who they became. I'm gonna go off on Harry Myastus later. Their Aunt Carolyn did testify in Bo's defense, blaming the outcome of this story on his upbringing. She said if they had treated Bo with kindness and respect, he would have treated others with kindness and respect. She said Bo would often help the elderly in their neighborhood and was often kind to the children. She never knew him to be mean or violent or aggressive. And she said he was really a kind spirit that just fell victim to the abuse and turmoil of his childhood. The jury, after hearing case files, witness testimonies and seeing the autopsy pictures, listening to the autopsy report, hearing multiple testimonies. They deliberated for about two hours and came back and said they weren't going for none of that. And they encouraged Judge dang, what was the judge's name again? I thought I wrote it was Judge Donnelly. Judge Judge Donald Mosley. Mosley. Judge Mosley. I might edit that out. Or I might leave it in. I don't know. I'm going through it. It's late once again. But they deliberated for about two hours and came back and said they weren't going for none of that. And Bo was sentenced to death. Bo did apologize to the families upon sentencing, and he tearfully said, quote, I would like to apologize to Britney Bergeron for what I've done. He said, Because of my actions that night, she'll forever be confined to a wheelchair and she's lost her sister. To the families, Mr. Cowan, Mr. Bergeron, and Mrs. Schmidt, I think that is her name now. I'm sorry for what's happened to you, to your daughters. He also apologized to his family for the shame that he caused them and for the shame that he brought upon the Maya Stasis name. And I feel like he should have saved that apology. But I do appreciate the fact that he apologized to the families of Kissy and Brittany. And by all accounts, they said that he seemed pretty sincere in her his apology. It was just too late to take back the horror of what he had done. And it was also too late to take back what he wrote in those letters. You called them little piggies that you slaughtered, Bo. Like for real? You can't even blame that on Meff, cause you were sober at the time, allegedly. Cause I know people do drugs in prison too. All right. So Omaestus is still currently in prison at the High Desert State Prison. I actually saw his mugshot and I'm not gonna lie. I his crime was completely heinous. I'm not even gonna hold you, not gonna, you know. But he looks like he looks like a fun time. I'm not gonna hold you. He looks like somebody who is just genuinely silly. He he looks like he looks like a troublemaker though. Like he has a very childish appearance about himself. Like that's what his mugshot looks like. He looks very like childish in appearance, like the guy that does pranks in the classroom. That's what he looks like. But baby, he's in there for life. He's in there for death, actually. He's not getting out. Monique was paroled, which I'm just like, has it been 47 years since 2003? Monique's out on parole. rumor is she's in Connecticut and she got married to another inmate, but I can't confirm that. That's just what the internet is saying. but yeah, Monique got out on parole. Bo did, you know, file several appeal appeals. Bo did file several appeals. They have all been denied to date. But yeah, your girl Monique is out. Which is wild to me. Wild to me. I think she got out in 2023. The record isn't quite clear, but her last parole hearing. No, I'm sorry. Her l her last parole hearing was in 2024. And I think that's when she was released on parole. Put her ass back in there. I'm sorry. Put her ass back in there. Bo is not about to go down by himself. I'm sorry. They both did this. And she's the one that got him in the house. I feel like they both need to be in there. But yeah, she has been out on parole. So where are the families now? Tamara Bergeron was sentenced to four to twelve years for child neglect for leaving the girls alone. Robert Schmidt was sentenced to two years for his involvement in the girls' upbringing. Brittany Bergeron was adopted by Bill and Judy Himmel when she was 16 years old after a long custody battle between Tammy, Kevin, and the Himmels. She unfortunately remains paralyzed from the waist down from her attack. There was a quote that I read from Britney on an ABC News article where she was asked if she ever misses walking. And she said, quote, actually, I don't. I have a better life. Before I didn't have such a great life, quote. Despite being paralyzed, her quality of life improved significantly. She did go on to graduate high school with honors and is now Brittany Bergeron Himmel. I think. She should probably drop the burger on and just be Britney Himmel. Monique, although she is out on parole right now, she did find herself in a little hot water while she was in prison after having an affair with one of the guards. I did find her write a prisoner.com profile, but I guess that's not even valid because baby girl is out and I am in shock. I am in shock. Because I actually did the research for this case last week. And I did not look up like her prisoner profile. And so I looked up her prisoner profile today and realized that she got let out on parole. But it's like, it was like at the bottom of the page and like, hey, parole hearing. I think it was like March 2024. And then when I went back to be like, okay, well, what prison is she at? And then it was like prison details invalid. And then it said, in parentheses, paroled. I'm like, what's So that was a new finding to me upon recording this episode. And I'm just like, put her ass back in there. I'm so sorry. I'm so sorry. But I guess she has another chance at life. I just, I mean, I don't feel bad for Bo, but I'm just like, y'all did this together. That's not fair. That is not fair. And she was the one banging on the guards. But hey, who knows what Bo's been doing? You know, he might be banging on guards too. I don't Harry Myastus died at his home on December 14th, 2016. And may he rest in shit. Anybody remember that line from Soul Men? That's how I feel about Harry. That's how I feel about Harry. After reading this whole story, Harry was the real criminal here. May he rest in shit. Okay. I'm like, golly. Let me not do too much though, because get this. Harry was married to a whole other woman named Linda. And had bonus children when he died. Linda, you let that man around your daughters. You let that man around your daughters. He was out here sexually assaulting everybody. And you let that man around your daughters and your sons, because apparently Harry did what Harry did. But he's dead now. And thanks be to God. I'm still confused. I'm like, Linda, you married this man after I mean. I suppose he could have lied to her about his past. That is a real thing. We have seen that. But ain't no way you're putting my name next to his name in his obituary when he was arrested for murdering his ex-girlfriend, when he physically abused his wife, sexually abused his daughters, and then when was confronted about it and asked to be there for his kids when they needed him during their trial, he said, I don't know them. I don't know them. He he pulled a real Kiki Palmer. Sorry to that man. I don't know that man. Mm-mm. I if I seen him in the street, I'm sorry to that man. That's what he did. Those were your children. Those were your children. And yes, they did some pretty messed up things. They did. Like this whole case was completely heinous. It really was. It was awful what they did. And they deserve to serve the time for what they did. But I feel like Harry should have been in jail right behind them. But oops, he was because he was constantly in and out of prison. I have a a special like bubble up in my heart for people like Harry Maestus and the fact that he died in my opinion without reform just really, really grinds my gears. It really does. Like and I'm just sitting here like Linda, Linda, you let that man around your family. What is making y'all fall for this man? Somebody please tell me. Like there has to be a clinical reason. Where was medication involved? Did he drug you? Linda, are you okay? That that's my question. I could go on and on, but out of respect for Linda, I won't. After looking up Harry Myastis, as you can see, I got pissed. I was pissed. Like, I was pissed that he got to die in the comfort of his own home. And I did not care too much to look up Marilyn because as far as I'm concerned, she can go to hell and set up a tent right on the lake of fire next to Harry. I did do a quick Google search though, just out of due diligence, because I didn't want to leave y'all hanging. And I did find one Marilyn Maestus on Instagram and on Facebook that apparently sells jewelry now, handmade jewelry. I would not buy a thing that that woman made. It's cursed objects, in my opinion. And I really hope that's not her. But I only found one Marilyn Maestus. I mean, she could have gotten remarried. So maybe this is a totally different Marilyn Maestus, but Girl. And that leads me to my final thoughts. Harry can go to hell. I hope he's there. Marilyn can go to hell. This, I do agree with their defense attorneys. They were products of their environment. And it was sad all across the board. It was sad for Kissy. It was sad for Britney. It was sad for Bo. It was sad for Monique. It was sad for Misty. Even though Misty was like just a testifying party in this, she endured that childhood as well. She endured the abuse. She endured, you know, being sexually, physically, mentally tormented. She endured having to go to the prison to see somebody that she really hated. She endured a militant lifestyle, which is just like, how is it a militant lifestyle when you're not even providing? You're not even providing. They were left at home alone constantly, all of the children in the story. And granted, listen, I'm not above. I was a latchkey kid. My kids have been latchkey kids in their lives. It happens. Sometimes kids are left home alone. But not like this. Not in the middle of the night, so you can go gamble and do drugs. Not in the environment that they were in. It was incredibly unsafe all across the board. And it just, I don't know. This story really pissed me off. It really pissed me off. And it just my gosh. And you know what made matters worse? I was at the grocery store today. And I saw this man and he had a little boy with him. And mind you, I have done all of the research for this case within the last seven days. So it's very fresh on my mind. And I saw this man and this kid at the store. And the man was on his phone and the little boy was loading up the shopping cart. Like the man was basically paying the boy no mind. And every once in a while the boy would like say, Do you think so-and-so would like this? I'm guessing it was his sister. And the man would like look up from his phone and be like, I don't know, maybe. Maybe she, maybe, I don't know. You know, you know what she likes. And it brought me back to the story. And when I told you the they were dirty. And so I followed them around the store for a little bit because I was like, I will do my due diligence and call CPS right now. In the cart literally was nothing but like little Debbie cakes and sugar. Like it was there was no real food in the cart. And I was just like, I have to practice what I preach. Like, look young man, are you okay? You know? Because I feel like that's what it's about, just not always minding our business. Like, even with the neighbor, and I get it. I get it. Somebody got involved, Marilyn skinned his cat and nailed it to his door. That was She would have been in jail messing with me. She would have been in jail messing with me. You killed a cat. You killed my cat and nailed it to my door and I know it was you. She would have been in jail messing with me. She would have because excuse the hell out of me. I would have called CPS at every turn. And I understand that we're in we're in the day of age of minding our own business and minding your business is free and da-da-da-da. But I really do think it takes a village. And I just feel like I wish that these kids had a better village. Like where the aunts and uncles, the grandparents, or how are they? Are they okay? Or were they involved? I do know a lot of times in stories like these, the families do move away so that there's no involvement. But it's just, it's just sad across the board. Like, and I feel bad too for Brittany's dad because he was actually fighting for Britney. Unfortunately he had his own drug and alcohol issues to deal with and that DUI pretty much killed any chance of him being able to I'm not gonna say any chance, but it did kill his chance at the moment of him being able to have custody of her and that was inf unfortunate in and of itself. And so this story was just truly tragic. I hated like researching it and it was just like when I tell you my jaw was like, excuse me? And I do feel a lot of times sometimes we sit in our, you know, in our heat and you know in our comfortable beds and it seems like stories like this are so far away but they're really not there are kids like in all of our communities that are living these lives and I'm telling you I will call CPS okay and listen if anybody ever felt like hey Kiana you're not doing a great job with your kids please call CPS please and I also understand like it's just the system is so cracked because even like Saying, call CPS, call DCF, call DCFS or whatever, call DSS. Like, they don't even, they can only do what they can. And a lot of times these stories get missed. Like, how many times have we heard of the neighbors and the families and all the people that were calling, you know, the authorities and we're calling the state and we're calling child protective services, and nothing got done. So it's just, the system is so cracked. But this story was just, God. my God. And Monique is out. I'm still not past that. I'm still not past the fact that Monique is out when she genuinely I really think those letters did vote in. I think the letters did him in and I think stabbing Kissy in the head did him in. I really do. I really, really do. But the fact that Monique was like, I really should have finished the job is just mind blowing to me that she is out living her life. Possibly in Connecticut. Hide your kids, how'd your wives? Seriously. but yeah, that is the end of the story. That's the end of my rants. That is just the end. I s I don't know if you can hear that on camera. I like repositioned myself in my seat and it sounded like the loudest fart. I only repositioned myself in my seat. I have to go back when I edit this video to see if you can hear it. But I really just repositioned myself in my seat. But that's the end of our show. And thank you guys, thank you guys, thank guys, thank guys, thank guys so much for the feedback, so much for the feedback on last week's episode that really did my heart well. If you're looking for me on social media, minor mischief podcast on Instagram, minor mischief pod on Twitter. I have 17 followers on Instagram now. I'm not on Twitter. My God, I don't even have a Twitter, I don't even know how to use Twitter. Auntie's old. Like I genuinely looked at myself in the mirror this morning and I don't feel like I look my age, but I definitely feel my age. And I was just like, When did I when did I approach my late thirties? Like, I'm be 37 this year. When did that happen? I I remember high school very well, actually. I remember middle school very well, actually. I remember elementary school very well, actually. I remember PS two eight. I remember these things. And I feel like it's like It was literally thirteen going on 30. Like I woke up and I'm like, girl, you about to be 40 in a couple years. How you doing? And I'm just doing. So that is the end of our show. If you enjoyed it, loved, hated it, whatever, please leave a review. Let me know what you think.
