Latest / Commentary - TJ Meadows / Wakeup Call: Civic Discourse Shouldn’t be Fueled in Anger
Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: Debate is a good thing. It advances issues, it brings
- 0:04Speaker 1: new ideas to light. It's part of a healthy civic culture.
- 0:08Speaker 1: But and there's always a butt when debate drifts from
- 0:12Speaker 1: those virtues into anger. When it becomes more about beating
- 0:15Speaker 1: someone than finding a good outcome, it stops being constructive
- 0:19Speaker 1: and starts being corrosive. While visiting a church Sunday morning
- 0:23Speaker 1: for a baptism, a message landed like a metaphorical frying
- 0:27Speaker 1: pan upside the head, and frankly, it was overdue. You
- 0:31Speaker 1: don't have to be religious to appreciate the wisdom in it.
- 0:34Speaker 1: The verse was James one p. Nineteen be quick to hear,
- 0:38Speaker 1: slow to speak, and slow to anger. In plain terms,
- 0:43Speaker 1: listen carefully, choose words thoughtfully, and keep emotions in check.
- 0:48Speaker 1: That triggered a little self reflection and an ouch moment,
- 0:52Speaker 1: Because day after day, on talk line and on social media,
- 0:56Speaker 1: debate is constant. Opinions are shared, usually round it in
- 1:00Speaker 1: facts as we understand them, but too often the goal
- 1:03Speaker 1: quietly shifts. It becomes about proving someone wrong, winning the exchange,
- 1:09Speaker 1: getting the last word, and when responses come to quickly
- 1:12Speaker 1: without truly hearing the other person, frustration creeps in. Maybe
- 1:16Speaker 1: it's stressed up in professional language. Maybe it sounds civil
- 1:20Speaker 1: on the surface, but underneath it can still be anger.
- 1:24Speaker 1: To be clear, this finger points inward. First, I'm talking
- 1:28Speaker 1: about me. This is about personal shortcomings, pride and the
- 1:31Speaker 1: effort to do better. Conviction matters, strong beliefs matter, Advocacy matters,
- 1:37Speaker 1: but so does humility. Imagine if our political conversations started
- 1:42Speaker 1: with listening, if disagreement came with a measure of grace,
- 1:45Speaker 1: if persuasion didn't require personal victory, we might keep our
- 1:50Speaker 1: convictions and our relationships. So feel free to hold that
- 1:54Speaker 1: standard close and hold this host to it as well.
- 1:57Speaker 1: A reminder to listen first, speak carefully, and avoid anger
- 2:01Speaker 1: that misses the mark. Winning a point, after all, isn't
- 2:05Speaker 1: worth losing our shared humanity. The goal is simple, do
- 2:09Speaker 1: better together. That's possible.
