- 0:05Speaker 1: Cardinal Territory is presented by Fox One and welcome back
- 0:09Speaker 1: indeed to Cardinal Territory.
- 0:11Speaker 2: It's been a minute. My apologies, I promise I'll explain.
- 0:14Speaker 1: I'm your host, Katie Woo, and we are only two
- 0:17Speaker 1: weeks ish into the off season, but it kind of
- 0:20Speaker 1: feels so.
- 0:21Speaker 2: So much longer than that, right, I don't know why.
- 0:24Speaker 1: Maybe it's just because post season baseball has been insane,
- 0:28Speaker 1: but yeah, it doesn't really feel like it's only been
- 0:29Speaker 1: two weeks. Perhaps you've noticed, however, we have switched up
- 0:34Speaker 1: our availability. We are only going to have one episode
- 0:37Speaker 1: a week of this show, at least for the immediate future.
- 0:40Speaker 1: I am going to help out at the Athletic with
- 0:43Speaker 1: our National League playoff coverage, as evidenced by the show
- 0:46Speaker 1: being recorded straight from my hotel room in Milwaukee ahead
- 0:50Speaker 1: of Game one of the NLCS between the Brewers and
- 0:52Speaker 1: the Dodgers, because I just can't escape the nl Central apparently,
- 0:56Speaker 1: so a minor setback for Cardinal Territory for now, though
- 0:59Speaker 1: I am. I'm hopeful we'll have more clarity about the
- 1:02Speaker 1: show and its availability in early November. We will also
- 1:04Speaker 1: still have Bernie micklass on as well. As a contributor.
- 1:08Speaker 1: I'm excited to get him back on the show soon.
- 1:10Speaker 1: I know he has plenty to say and talk about
- 1:12Speaker 1: with all the changes coming to Cardinals Land over the
- 1:15Speaker 1: next few months, So knock on wood. Hopefully we don't
- 1:19Speaker 1: miss too much news with the once a week show.
- 1:21Speaker 1: But the Cardinals are very much underway with their off
- 1:25Speaker 1: season planning, and we'll get to that. But since we
- 1:29Speaker 1: are on the subject of playoffs, let's break down the
- 1:32Speaker 1: upcoming ALCS, which starts tonight real quick with our presenting sponsor,
- 1:37Speaker 1: Fox One. Okay, Fox Cardinal Territory is brought to you
- 1:47Speaker 1: by Fox one.
- 1:48Speaker 2: Fox one is now live.
- 1:50Speaker 1: You stream all your Fox favorites together in one place,
- 1:52Speaker 1: including all ale playoff games.
- 1:55Speaker 2: And the World Series.
- 1:56Speaker 1: Tonight Sunday, we have Game one of the ale Yes
- 2:00Speaker 1: between the Seattle Mariners and the Toronto Blue Jays, a
- 2:03Speaker 1: league championship matchup we definitely all predicted back in April.
- 2:07Speaker 1: But seriously, I love this matchup so much, not just
- 2:11Speaker 1: for the baseball element, which I will get into, but first,
- 2:13Speaker 1: can we talk about the fan bases, I mean, Mariners fans.
- 2:17Speaker 1: I actually can very much relate to you guys. I
- 2:21Speaker 1: cry a lot too, very emotional, tend to get caught
- 2:23Speaker 1: up in the moment, and twenty four years coming back
- 2:28Speaker 1: to the Alcs for the first time and generation, Yeah,
- 2:31Speaker 1: I'd be emotional too, so continue crying. It's cool. And
- 2:34Speaker 1: then Toronto just a great city to go visit. Playoff
- 2:38Speaker 1: Flatty is electric Baseball has been deserving a playoff Vladimir
- 2:42Speaker 1: Gerrera Junior for a very long time, and he has
- 2:43Speaker 1: certainly risen to the occasion. Two great cities to visit,
- 2:48Speaker 1: two great fan bases. Just incredible matchup for the Alcs.
- 2:53Speaker 1: But how about before we even get to the Alcs,
- 2:55Speaker 1: how about that fifteen inning game Friday night between the
- 2:58Speaker 1: Tigers and the Mariners Alds Game five on Fox.
- 3:02Speaker 2: Fantastic game. And we'll get to that too.
- 3:04Speaker 1: But I actually just want to say I really enjoyed
- 3:06Speaker 1: the broadcast, Adam Aman doing play by play, and of
- 3:08Speaker 1: course Cardinals fans are very familiar with analyst Adam Wainwright
- 3:12Speaker 1: and our guy here at Foul Territory, agent Prasinski. They
- 3:15Speaker 1: crushed it. That was just an incredibly well done broadcast.
- 3:20Speaker 1: Nine and means in a deciding game, an elimination game
- 3:23Speaker 1: is a lot fifteen is.
- 3:25Speaker 2: Insane, and they were on it the entire time.
- 3:28Speaker 1: I think the term instant classic gets overused a ton,
- 3:31Speaker 1: especially in the postseason, but that game was simply October
- 3:35Speaker 1: baseball at its best. So I mean the pitching. You
- 3:39Speaker 1: have school going down, striking out thirteen. You have both
- 3:42Speaker 1: teams going to their rotation to finish out games because
- 3:45Speaker 1: they're running out of pitchers. Every time the Tigers would
- 3:49Speaker 1: get into a jam, you'd think, Okay, this is it
- 3:51Speaker 1: for the Mariners, and it'd be like some weird double player.
- 3:53Speaker 2: I don't know, just just a great baseball game.
- 3:56Speaker 1: I loved it, watched every second and I hope both
- 3:59Speaker 1: CS's bring us that same energy.
- 4:01Speaker 2: I hope the ALCS go seven.
- 4:03Speaker 1: I have no idea which team is better suited to
- 4:05Speaker 1: win that between the Blue Jays and the Mariners again,
- 4:07Speaker 1: playoff flattie injecteds by veins.
- 4:09Speaker 2: I love it.
- 4:10Speaker 1: The Mariners pitching staff nasty, even more so with Brian
- 4:13Speaker 1: wlu no relation.
- 4:15Speaker 2: Making that ALCS roster.
- 4:17Speaker 1: That news was announced earlier today, so you can stream
- 4:20Speaker 1: game one of the ALCS on Fox one again. That
- 4:24Speaker 1: kicks off tonight at seven to three pm Central Standard time,
- 4:27Speaker 1: and I do believe we have a free trial available
- 4:32Speaker 1: from MLB postseason to NFL on Fox to Big Noons
- 4:36Speaker 1: Saturdays with Fox One you Get it All Live. Start
- 4:38Speaker 1: your seven day free trial today. Offers are subject to change.

- 4:44Speaker 1: Fox One Streaming.
- 4:46Speaker 2: Now. Okay, let's talk Cardinals. Where do we even start?
- 4:55Speaker 1: Since Tim Bloom's introduction as Cardinals President at Baseball Operations,
- 5:00Speaker 1: there has been some traction in what he promised, which
- 5:04Speaker 1: was adding more positions to the organizations, specifically in the
- 5:08Speaker 1: front office, rather than subtracting from them. So the Cardinals
- 5:13Speaker 1: are currently working on adding to some front office positions
- 5:16Speaker 1: and potentially expanding their coaching staff.
- 5:19Speaker 2: Let's talk about the pro scouting thing first.
- 5:21Speaker 1: Upon the athletic Earlier in October, we reported that the
- 5:25Speaker 1: Cardinals are looking to hire essentially a director of pro Scouting. Now,
- 5:29Speaker 1: that might not be the official title of the position,
- 5:32Speaker 1: but that is the definition of the job necessarily. This
- 5:35Speaker 1: has nothing to do with Randy Floor as a status
- 5:37Speaker 1: as AGM and scouting director. Let's break down scouting a
- 5:40Speaker 1: little bit, because it can get confusing. They're scouting, right,
- 5:43Speaker 1: and then there's different windows. There's international scouting. There is
- 5:46Speaker 1: amateur scouting, so that's high school, college, and then there's
- 5:49Speaker 1: professional scouting, where you're essentially scouting other teams and other
- 5:53Speaker 1: organizations players at.
- 5:54Speaker 2: The pro level.
- 5:56Speaker 1: The Cardinals are one of the very few teams that
- 5:58Speaker 1: are continuing to staff their pro scouting department with actual people.
- 6:02Speaker 1: Many organizations, the Cubs being one of them, they just
- 6:05Speaker 1: downright or outright eliminated their pro scouting department.
- 6:08Speaker 2: The Twins have one pro scout.
- 6:10Speaker 1: These organizations are cutting back actual scouts in lieu of
- 6:14Speaker 1: programming and projection models. Him Bloom has said he doesn't
- 6:17Speaker 1: believe and it or he doesn't want it to be
- 6:19Speaker 1: one or the other. He believes that it should be
- 6:21Speaker 1: a combination of personal talent and then using your models
- 6:25Speaker 1: to make sure that those scouting reports and scouting projections
- 6:29Speaker 1: are matching up behind the scenes as well. So, long
- 6:32Speaker 1: story short, the Cardinals will add to their professional development
- 6:36Speaker 1: all they have seven pro scouts. All pro scouts were
- 6:39Speaker 1: retained on one year deals, and this will be the
- 6:42Speaker 1: first leadership change under him Bloom because this will be
- 6:46Speaker 1: a higher up front office position. Brandy Flores will still
- 6:50Speaker 1: remain the director of Scouting at least that as the plan.
- 6:53Speaker 1: This will allow him to focus more on amateur He'll
- 6:56Speaker 1: still oversee the entire department, don't get me wrong, but
- 6:58Speaker 1: he and Ty Boyles, who does the He's the manager
- 7:03Speaker 1: of the amateur side.
- 7:03Speaker 2: He's basically the number two.
- 7:05Speaker 1: We'll focus on high school and college talent, and the
- 7:07Speaker 1: Cardinals need to get better at evaluating players in Major
- 7:11Speaker 1: League Baseball. That will be the job of this director.
- 7:16Speaker 1: If you will again, it might not be that title.
- 7:18Speaker 1: So why you ask, Well, you can read about on
- 7:21Speaker 1: the athletic and I can just also tell you here
- 7:26Speaker 1: data programming, projection models. They tend to rule organizations right
- 7:30Speaker 1: now as we switch into the analytics.
- 7:32Speaker 2: You know all this, and.
- 7:34Speaker 1: Many teams are pivoting for technology over a straight up evaluations.
- 7:37Speaker 1: Here's what heim Bloom said about that strategy.
- 7:40Speaker 2: He said, I don't see it as.
- 7:42Speaker 1: Either or, and I don't think it can be right
- 7:44Speaker 1: now in today's game, with the sophistication of the teams
- 7:47Speaker 1: we're competing against, if we're not using a rigorous and
- 7:50Speaker 1: systematic method to help our process in any area, then
- 7:53Speaker 1: we're probably going to get beat because we're not leveraging
- 7:55Speaker 1: the best technology.
- 7:56Speaker 2: But at the same time. Bloom goes on to say, you.
- 7:59Speaker 1: Would want experts to use their knowledge and instinct to
- 8:01Speaker 1: help you make better decisions, understanding that there's going to
- 8:04Speaker 1: be a lot of systems that are going to help them.
- 8:06Speaker 1: I think you get the best results when you're combining that.
- 8:08Speaker 1: So this will be new for the Cardinals pro scouting
- 8:11Speaker 1: department again, all seven scouts coming back. They are going
- 8:14Speaker 1: to be using new models, new projections, new software, new programming,
- 8:18Speaker 1: and they're going to have a new director to kind
- 8:20Speaker 1: of oversee that entire change. This is totally in line
- 8:23Speaker 1: with what Himas said about his preference to add to
- 8:25Speaker 1: the front office and create positions instead of eliminating them.
- 8:30Speaker 1: Those interviews for that position started taking place last week,
- 8:33Speaker 1: so I think the Cardinals would like to have a
- 8:35Speaker 1: hire sooner rather than later in that regard, and then
- 8:37Speaker 1: there will be a trickle down effect. Support roles will
- 8:41Speaker 1: be created for more positions. They're basically what the Cardinals
- 8:44Speaker 1: and in player development, they're looking to now do in
- 8:45Speaker 1: professional scouting, not nearly to the degree of overhauling, but
- 8:49Speaker 1: just adding more staff and bettering the technology.
- 8:51Speaker 2: This is a good thing, I really do think. So.
- 8:56Speaker 1: Another rumor we've seen floating around. Well, it's not really
- 8:58Speaker 1: a rumor when some goes out and says that Yachti
- 9:01Speaker 1: or Molina has been in conversations to join the twenty
- 9:04Speaker 1: twenty six Cardinals coaching staff. Yes, those conversations have taken
- 9:07Speaker 1: place over the last couple of weeks. Let's pump the brakes. Though,
- 9:11Speaker 1: while it would be super exciting to have number four
- 9:13Speaker 1: in the dugout full time conversations are simply that. It
- 9:16Speaker 1: doesn't mean anything is growing traction. It doesn't mean Yachti
- 9:19Speaker 1: is for sure going to get hired. As far as
- 9:21Speaker 1: I know, I don't believe the Cardinals are planning for
- 9:24Speaker 1: any coaching changes. This could change if others get interviewed
- 9:26Speaker 1: for other positions, but I believe the intention right now
- 9:30Speaker 1: from Oli Marvel and him Bloom is to keep this
- 9:32Speaker 1: corp coaches together. But yes, they are having conversations about
- 9:37Speaker 1: potentially bringing Yachti in to maybe a full time role,
- 9:42Speaker 1: maybe part time again conversations. It's like when you hear
- 9:46Speaker 1: at the trade deadline that teams have interests are in
- 9:50Speaker 1: conversations about this player.
- 9:52Speaker 2: Yeah, that should happen.
- 9:53Speaker 1: That doesn't mean that the end result is going to
- 9:56Speaker 1: be what most Cardinals fans want, which would be Yatti
- 9:58Speaker 1: on the coaching staff. It just means that these conversations
- 10:01Speaker 1: are taking place. So when things start to heat up
- 10:05Speaker 1: and maybe some traction and decision comes, I promise you
- 10:08Speaker 1: we'll be there to report it and give you more insight.
- 10:10Speaker 1: Right now, all we can say is all that's happened,
- 10:13Speaker 1: which is the two sides have talked.
- 10:17Speaker 2: Yeah, so will you join staff? I don't know. We'll see.
- 10:20Speaker 2: Maybe they'll continue talking, maybe they won't.
- 10:24Speaker 1: So that's really what's been going on behind the scenes
- 10:26Speaker 1: for the Cardinals right now. Again, it's really hard to
- 10:29Speaker 1: really jump out your off season when the postseason is
- 10:31Speaker 1: still going on.
- 10:32Speaker 2: So really what they.
- 10:33Speaker 1: Are relegated to doing is creating front office positions, bettering
- 10:36Speaker 1: the technology, and looking at making changes or adding to
- 10:40Speaker 1: their coaching staff before you know what, the.
- 10:43Speaker 2: Real off season will be here.
- 10:44Speaker 1: But again, we got to get you the CS and
- 10:45Speaker 1: the World Series first, guys, So let's ship right into
- 10:49Speaker 1: our next segment. It will be our pals at DraftKings.
- 10:53Speaker 1: Be right back.
- 11:00Speaker 2: DraftKings. It's usually a player to watch.
- 11:03Speaker 1: Won't be a lot of players to watch for your
- 11:05Speaker 1: Cardinals fan for a while, so we're gonna go with
- 11:07Speaker 1: our Draft Kings spotlight person to watch use code foull
- 11:11Speaker 1: and get fifty dollars in bonus picks here with our
- 11:13Speaker 1: friends at DraftKings. Our person to watch right now is
- 11:17Speaker 1: probably manager Olie Marble, who is again back for the
- 11:20Speaker 1: twenty twenty six season. Him Blue made that official in
- 11:22Speaker 1: his introductory press conference, and there is a story of
- 11:26Speaker 1: on the Athletic about Ollie Marble's communication styles and why
- 11:30Speaker 1: ultimately he was brought back, and it didn't really seem
- 11:33Speaker 1: to be that big of a decision. Actually, it was
- 11:36Speaker 1: kind of understood for those of us around the team
- 11:38Speaker 1: every day that he would be coming back in twenty
- 11:40Speaker 1: twenty six. I'll preface this with not someone to like
- 11:43Speaker 1: toot my own horn, but this is a pretty expansive
- 11:46Speaker 1: story on what people inside the Cardinals organization, the two
- 11:50Speaker 1: most important people think of Olie Marble's managerial tactics in
- 11:54Speaker 1: terms of managing the clubhouse. We can go back and
- 11:57Speaker 1: forth on bullpen management, on you know, lineup whatever. I
- 12:00Speaker 1: just spent six months debating those with you guys, though,
- 12:02Speaker 1: so excuse me for needing.
- 12:03Speaker 2: Just a little bit of a break.
- 12:05Speaker 1: Let's talk about what I found interesting in reporting this story.
- 12:09Speaker 1: I should probably have it up for you, guys, but
- 12:10Speaker 1: you can read at the Athletic. It was how the
- 12:16Speaker 1: players that the Cardinals are looking to build around spoke
- 12:19Speaker 1: about their communication with their managers. So I talked to
- 12:22Speaker 1: four players in the story, Brendan Donovan, Alc Gurlison, Mason
- 12:25Speaker 1: Wynn and Michael McGreevy.
- 12:26Speaker 2: And what do those four players have in common?
- 12:28Speaker 1: Well, they all had pretty good seasons and look to
- 12:30Speaker 1: be key pieces in this organization's future for twenty twenty
- 12:35Speaker 1: six and possibly beyond. And let me tell you something, guys.
- 12:39Speaker 1: Players do not usually respond to reporters one week into
- 12:43Speaker 1: the offseason after spending seven months with them, eager for
- 12:47Speaker 1: an interview. But all four of these players responded very quickly.
- 12:50Speaker 1: I was able to get them on the phone, and
- 12:52Speaker 1: this was something that they wanted to talk about. And
- 12:56Speaker 1: I think that says a lot again because I don't
- 12:58Speaker 1: know any player that is willing to doctor reporter on
- 13:01Speaker 1: October eighth or ninth. Okay, So, when you think about
- 13:05Speaker 1: all the different things that Oli Marble had to manage,
- 13:07Speaker 1: just from a personality standpoint, there was the transitioneer, which
- 13:12Speaker 1: I hope I literally never have to say that word
- 13:14Speaker 1: phrase again.
- 13:15Speaker 2: It makes me sick. There was a lot of different
- 13:18Speaker 2: playing time.
- 13:19Speaker 1: We know about Michael McGreevy situation, We know about Mason
- 13:21Speaker 1: Winn playing through an injury. Alec Burlson had to sit
- 13:24Speaker 1: the bench for a while, and though he was one
- 13:26Speaker 1: of the better players, all for the sake of the
- 13:28Speaker 1: front office trying to figure out how they could move
- 13:30Speaker 1: forward in twenty twenty six, it's probably the right call
- 13:33Speaker 1: for the overall status of the organization didn't make it
- 13:36Speaker 1: very easy to manage.
- 13:37Speaker 2: In twenty twenty five. And it's a two way street.
- 13:39Speaker 1: Your manager has to be on board and your players
- 13:41Speaker 1: have to understand the bigger picture behind what's going on here.
- 13:45Speaker 1: And I thought it could have gone really sideways with
- 13:49Speaker 1: two players. It could have gone really sideways with Michael
- 13:51Speaker 1: mcgreeby and Alec Burlson. You're telling me, if you're Michael
- 13:55Speaker 1: mcgreeby and you go out there and you have a
- 13:56Speaker 1: really encouraging end to your twenty twenty four season, you
- 14:00Speaker 1: come into spring training and the whole premise is, oh,
- 14:02Speaker 1: let the kids play development season whatever, like, let's get
- 14:06Speaker 1: our young guys out there.
- 14:07Speaker 2: You go out there and you shove and spring.
- 14:09Speaker 1: And for three months, almost four you are not a
- 14:12Speaker 1: member of the major league rotation. You can lose a
- 14:14Speaker 1: guy really quickly like that, especially because most organizations do
- 14:17Speaker 1: not handle their first round picks the way the Cardinals
- 14:20Speaker 1: handle their first round picks, Especially the McGreevy situation. It's
- 14:23Speaker 1: like an unwritten rule that a first round pick can
- 14:25Speaker 1: get preferential treatment, not here in Saint Louis, apparently. But
- 14:28Speaker 1: the reason why McGreevy was able to stay level headed
- 14:32Speaker 1: and stay understanding of the decisions coming from the front office,
- 14:35Speaker 1: even when they really truly weren't fair to him, he
- 14:37Speaker 1: credited a lot to Allie's communication with him. Here's some
- 14:41Speaker 1: quotes from that story. McGreevy said, I appreciate the way
- 14:43Speaker 1: Allie presented the situation with me. He made me feel
- 14:48Speaker 1: I was part of the team, even though I was
- 14:49Speaker 1: going down to Memphis. From the get go, Alli was
- 14:51Speaker 1: very understanding of what I would be going through because
- 14:53Speaker 1: he knew I deserved it based on performance. He wanted
- 14:56Speaker 1: to make sure my emotions were in check. It's a
- 14:58Speaker 1: tough thing to tell a player on the short end
- 15:00Speaker 1: of the stick. McGreevy went on to say, he reinforced
- 15:03Speaker 1: there was nothing I could do. He'd say, we just
- 15:05Speaker 1: need you to be Michael McGreevy and you'll be here
- 15:07Speaker 1: in no time. And though that's a cliche, the message
- 15:09Speaker 1: in the way it was presented, gave me extra motivation
- 15:12Speaker 1: to see what he said about me and put himself
- 15:14Speaker 1: out there. He definitely fought for me. He's fighting for me,
- 15:16Speaker 1: I'll fight for him. That makes you want to go
- 15:18Speaker 1: out there and compete. And because Allie was able to
- 15:20Speaker 1: communicate with McGreevy, and McGreevy also credited the Memphis staff,
- 15:24Speaker 1: they deserve a ton of credit here as well, was
- 15:27Speaker 1: able to go out and put together a pretty respectable
- 15:30Speaker 1: second half campaign. And you know, going into spring training
- 15:33Speaker 1: now that you have McGreevy, that you can pencil him
- 15:35Speaker 1: in as your number four five starter. Okay, probably three
- 15:40Speaker 1: or four, given the way that the Cardinals rotation is
- 15:42Speaker 1: shaking out, probably maybe a two or three actually, the
- 15:45Speaker 1: more I think about it. Point of the point of
- 15:47Speaker 1: the story being, you can pencil McGreevy in as a
- 15:49Speaker 1: dependable armnustarting rotation because the communication during a justifiably frustrating
- 15:54Speaker 1: period was so strong from your manager and your player
- 15:56Speaker 1: on the position side. Same thing for Alec Burlson. Alec Burlson,
- 16:01Speaker 1: in my opinion, had the best success story in terms
- 16:03Speaker 1: of transition, runway, whatever word you want to use, season,
- 16:07Speaker 1: and he could have easily gotten complacent or frustrated with
- 16:11Speaker 1: the organization because for the third season in a row,
- 16:14Speaker 1: they were prioritizing other players over him, even though he
- 16:18Speaker 1: was out performing guys like Nolan Gorman, like Lars Mubar,
- 16:21Speaker 1: like Jordan Walker. And I remember having multiple conversations, especially
- 16:25Speaker 1: early on, with Burley about this, and he said, you
- 16:28Speaker 1: know what, I really it's going to work itself out.
- 16:30Speaker 2: And he repeated that.
- 16:31Speaker 1: In this story, I'll read a couple quotes from Burlison
- 16:34Speaker 1: about what he said about the communication from Aulie and
- 16:37Speaker 1: bench coach Chaniel, descalso about his role and when he
- 16:40Speaker 1: was going to see more consistent playing time. It happened
- 16:43Speaker 1: in Milwaukee, of all places. It was mid June, i
- 16:47Speaker 1: want to say, in a four game series over the weekend,
- 16:50Speaker 1: and Allie came up to Alec Burlson in the dugout
- 16:52Speaker 1: and said, Hey, we're going to stay away from you
- 16:54Speaker 1: for the next X amount of days. You're not in
- 16:56Speaker 1: starting lineup. We're not going to see a lot of you.
- 16:58Speaker 1: We have to give some looks to other guys. Here's why.
- 17:01Speaker 1: And it would have been so understandable. I Burlson was like,
- 17:03Speaker 1: that's dumb. I'm hitting well, I'm performing well. I'm a
- 17:06Speaker 1: better right now, a better player results wise than all
- 17:08Speaker 1: these guys, and you're gonna sit me. But because it
- 17:11Speaker 1: was explained in a way where it was, hey, this
- 17:13Speaker 1: is a higher decision. Everyone knows it's not fair to you,
- 17:16Speaker 1: but this is kind of what we have to do. Burlison,
- 17:18Speaker 1: credit to him, took it in stride. And here's what
- 17:21Speaker 1: he said. He said, I remember saying it was going
- 17:23Speaker 1: to work itself out. Four months later, it worked itself out.
- 17:26Speaker 1: Burlison led the season led the Cardinals this season in
- 17:29Speaker 1: ops with eight oh two, a four to fifty nine
- 17:31Speaker 1: slugging percentage and a batting average of two ninety, third
- 17:34Speaker 1: on the team with eighteen homers, and he also had
- 17:36Speaker 1: the third highest on base percentage of eligible players at
- 17:39Speaker 1: three forty three.
- 17:41Speaker 2: And here's what he said about his season.
- 17:43Speaker 1: Burley said, as I grew in the organization and gained
- 17:45Speaker 1: some trust amongst the coaching staff, Allie was very transparent
- 17:48Speaker 1: with the way things were being handled. There are periods
- 17:50Speaker 1: of times where I was sitting against both righty's and
- 17:52Speaker 1: lefties and it was good to get some looks at
- 17:54Speaker 1: some of the other guys. But he was super transparent,
- 17:56Speaker 1: whether it was through him or bench coach channel Toscalso,
- 17:59Speaker 1: I knew it was expected of me and what my
- 18:01Speaker 1: role was going to be. Allie handle all of that
- 18:03Speaker 1: stuff really well and kept me in the loop. I
- 18:06Speaker 1: was never really questioning what I was being asked to do.
- 18:08Speaker 1: That kind of communication really changed I think how Alec
- 18:12Speaker 1: Gurlson approached his work, and in turn, the Cardinals now
- 18:15Speaker 1: have somebody on the position side that they can count
- 18:18Speaker 1: in as their future. They will build around Alec Burlson.
- 18:20Speaker 1: I'm not saying he's the star of the team by
- 18:22Speaker 1: any means, but he is a key supplementary piece for them,
- 18:26Speaker 1: and that is a testament to yes, the communication from
- 18:29Speaker 1: the coaching staff and also to the way that Burlssen
- 18:31Speaker 1: took that communication in stride. You can read the full
- 18:34Speaker 1: story for Brendan Donovan and Mason wins thoughts as well,
- 18:37Speaker 1: but I just thought that was what really stood out
- 18:39Speaker 1: to me. Was how eager players were to talk about
- 18:41Speaker 1: this and how quickly thankfully they called me back in
- 18:44Speaker 1: the very early off season. So that is our DraftKings
- 18:49Speaker 1: person spotlight.
- 18:51Speaker 2: Quick message, will be right back.

- 19:12Speaker 1: Okay, some news as we head into another week. Albert
- 19:19Speaker 1: Pooles perhaps you know the name is the top choice
- 19:22Speaker 1: for the open Angels manager job in Anaheim, reported by
- 19:25Speaker 1: myself and our Angels writer at the Athletic Sam Blum.
- 19:29Speaker 1: Angels general manager Perry miners And came to Saint Louis
- 19:32Speaker 1: this weekend to meet with Albert Pooholes and they discussed
- 19:36Speaker 1: Albert being the new manager for the Angels. Ron Washington
- 19:39Speaker 1: was not brought back and interim manager Very Montgomery could
- 19:42Speaker 1: stand the road in the organization, but the Angels will
- 19:45Speaker 1: be hiring a new manager. And if owner Arti Reno
- 19:48Speaker 1: had it his way, it will be Albert Poohles. So
- 19:52Speaker 1: the reason why Perry miners and came to Saint Louis,
- 19:54Speaker 1: by the way, because I got a couple questions about that,
- 19:56Speaker 1: is because Albert's foundation, the Pools Family Foundation, held a event,
- 20:00Speaker 1: a charity event Friday night or Thursday night in Saint Louis.
- 20:04Speaker 1: So that's why Perry came here to Saint Louis to
- 20:08Speaker 1: interview Albert. They have discussed a potential contract and have
- 20:12Speaker 1: pieced together what that coaching staff.
- 20:14Speaker 2: Might look like.
- 20:15Speaker 1: The meeting was believed to have gone very well, and
- 20:18Speaker 1: the two sides again are having preliminary discussions on what
- 20:21Speaker 1: a deal could be, though there is no agreement yet
- 20:24Speaker 1: and there is not really announcement that's expected to be imminent.
- 20:27Speaker 1: The league has a strong preference that league in Major
- 20:29Speaker 1: League Baseball, that big announcements are not held during time
- 20:35Speaker 1: where there are postseason games going on. You actually believe
- 20:37Speaker 1: you actually have to have it approved by Major League
- 20:39Speaker 1: Baseball if you want to make an announcement like that.
- 20:41Speaker 2: And I think there Angels and Albert in.
- 20:43Speaker 1: Particular are still working through the logistics of what managing
- 20:46Speaker 1: a major league team would look like he is the
- 20:49Speaker 1: favorite choice.
- 20:49Speaker 2: Again of Angel's owner Artie Marino.
- 20:52Speaker 1: Some multiple sources have told Sam Blem and I that
- 20:55Speaker 1: it is essentially Albert's choice if he wants the job.
- 20:58Speaker 1: Tory Hunter remains in concation as well. But I don't
- 21:03Speaker 1: think there'll be a surprise here unless Albert decides to
- 21:05Speaker 1: change his mind. I'm not sure what he's thinking right now.
- 21:08Speaker 1: He has said multiple times that he has interest in
- 21:10Speaker 1: wanting to be a major league manager.
- 21:12Speaker 2: Here's your shot in Orange County. We'll see.
- 21:16Speaker 1: One thing that was not surprising on the topic of managers,
- 21:20Speaker 1: Skip Schumacher.
- 21:21Speaker 2: Congratulations are in order.
- 21:22Speaker 1: He was hired as the Texas Rangers a new manager,
- 21:25Speaker 1: something that I think we all saw coming when he
- 21:27Speaker 1: was hired to be a special advisor under President Baseball Operations.
- 21:32Speaker 2: Oh my gosh, Chris Young. So yeah.
- 21:35Speaker 1: When Bruce Bochi and the Rangers said it two part ways,
- 21:38Speaker 1: it was just a matter of time before Skip was introduced.
- 21:42Speaker 1: They and I actually believe they said it at their
- 21:44Speaker 1: ennfseason press conference that the Rangers would not be interviewing
- 21:47Speaker 1: anyone externally from the organization and their main focus was
- 21:49Speaker 1: to hire Skip, so a plus for honesty, not exactly
- 21:53Speaker 1: again a surprise, maybe the least surprising managerial role opening
- 21:57Speaker 1: so far. But congratulations again to Skip, a friend of
- 22:00Speaker 1: the show, front of the podcast, and a Cardinal's favorite.
- 22:03Speaker 1: He did a heck of a job with that Marlins team,
- 22:06Speaker 1: an unfortunate situation with that front office after the twenty
- 22:08Speaker 1: twenty three season in which he returned to the Marlins
- 22:11Speaker 1: to the postseason, something that is objectively hard to do.
- 22:15Speaker 1: The front office changed. Skip took a gap year learning
- 22:18Speaker 1: about the Rangers organization, and now he's back to lead
- 22:21Speaker 1: them for a four year contract deal. So congratulations again
- 22:25Speaker 1: to the entire Schumacher family.
- 22:29Speaker 2: All right, that's what I.
- 22:30Speaker 1: Got for you on this episode of Cardinal Territory. Hopefully
- 22:34Speaker 1: we will have to do our an emergency podcast like
- 22:36Speaker 1: our friends at Krush City Territory after the Houston Astros
- 22:39Speaker 1: cleaned house. Great job by Chandler Roman, Tyler Stafford to
- 22:42Speaker 1: break all that information down. Hopefully, fingers crossed. It's a
- 22:45Speaker 1: nice chill day in Cardinals week, and I survived the NLCS.
- 22:49Speaker 1: I've never covered the post season before to this extent
- 22:51Speaker 1: because the Cardinals never made it out of the Wildcard
- 22:54Speaker 1: Series in my five year tenure here, so I'm excited
- 22:56Speaker 1: to experience baseball and cover at a little bit of
- 22:58Speaker 1: a higher level, higher level, and hopefully I write better
- 23:02Speaker 1: than I speak. Thanks guys as always for watching Cardinal
- 23:04Speaker 1: Territory again. I'm your host, Katie. We'll be back next
- 23:06Speaker 1: week hopefully Bernie as well.
- 23:09Speaker 2: And yeah, thanks as always for watching
