- 0:00You become bad at it at home against Sacred Heart on Senior Day Saturday,
- 0:04November eighteen, twelve, noon game at Bratton Whitney Stadium. For tickets,
- 0:08go to Yukon Huskies dot Com. Back with Jim Moore on Mike Crispino Coach.
- 0:14I've heard this a lot lately from not only football coaches, but basketball
- 0:18coaches too, and it's actually come to fruition. There are now guys around
- 0:24the country who were considered gms for just the transfer portal. Is that going
- 0:29to be a new position that has to be created to manage all the moving
- 0:34parts of personnel around the country and your sport. Do you think, yeah?
- 0:38I do. I think you have to have a you know, people
- 0:42assigned specifically to the portal and evaluating players that are potential enters into the portal
- 0:50so that you can be ready to go should they enter the portal. You
- 0:55know, we need to be active in the portal again. We you know,
- 0:59we're going to lose some guys that we need to replace. We need
- 1:02to continually try to upgrade the talent on this team and we're going to be
- 1:07ultra aggressive in the portal. We've identified some positions where we can get better
- 1:11and add depth and add skill, and we're going to attack that hard.
- 1:15And we've got people in our organization that have evaluated potential portal targets at every
- 1:23level from FCS to SEC you know, and guys that could come in here
- 1:27and fit our culture and help us win football games. Now, we talked
- 1:34about this last week with the portal, you know, the NIL you know,
- 1:38I mean, it's a real deal. It's like, the portal is
- 1:42a real deal. The NIL is a real deal. And I know that
- 1:47we've got people here that we are working really hard to help us get some
- 1:53money so that we can be active in the portal. It's hard to be
- 1:57active in the portal unless you have an NIL program that can support you being
- 2:05active in the portal. It's sometimes pointless to be active in the portal if
- 2:07you don't have money to go secure these players. So they work hand in
- 2:14hand now, and the landscape of college football has changed so dramatically in such
- 2:19a short time because of those two factors, and they really fit together.
- 2:25It's hard to separate them, it really is. Yeah, it makes recruiting
- 2:30way different from when you were at UCLA. Let's say, you know,
- 2:34finding guys that want to be in your program for three four years, et
- 2:37cetera, et cetera. Let's get into evaluation now every week here down the
- 2:42home stretch, second half of the season. Will you be doing that weekly
- 2:46and moving guys up and down the depth chart a little bit and looking at
- 2:51maybe the future next year for Yukon football. How will you do that.
- 2:55Our philosophy won't change, and that is to put the players on the field
- 3:00that we give us the best chance to win that game. If that's a
- 3:04young guy, then it's a young guy. I think one thing that's important
- 3:07to do is constantly have competition. So there are guys moving up and down
- 3:12all the time, but at the same time, try to create some consistency.
- 3:15And so that's a dance that you have to dance. But at no
- 3:20point in time are we going to, you know, say, well,
- 3:23this season's over, let's just play a bunch of young guys and get them
- 3:25time. But we will look for opportunities to get young guys time. We've
- 3:30done that on defense, you know, in particularly with a couple of guys
- 3:32Lee Mallett and Isaiah Davis in the secondary. You know, the more they
- 3:37play, the better they get. So we're finding opportunities for them to play.
- 3:39We need to do that on offense with some young guys as well.
- 3:43We need to get Kylie Shicks some snaps. You know, we're gonna need
- 3:46to get Zach Droudy some snacks, some snaps here eventually. You know,
- 3:51the offensive line is very secure and you don't really sub offensive lineman in and
- 3:55out like you do any other position other than quarterbacks. So you know,
- 4:00we got some young offensive lineman. You'd love to get him some time that
- 4:02you know. That's situationally based. So you know, like I said,
- 4:08every week, it's the same thing, how do we win this game?
- 4:11How do we win the game that we're about to play. And that's irregardless
- 4:14of the record that we have or the situation that we're in. Now,
- 4:17this isn't a quote for me. This is from Frank Zappa. He said
- 4:20necessity is the mother of invention. I'm referring to Cam Edwards. The dude
- 4:27went for a buck forty nine the other day. He made four catches,
- 4:30he carried twenty two times, he cramped up, he carried the offense for
- 4:33a while. That's one of those deals we're out of nowhere from the defensive
- 4:40back depth chart. He ends up running with the football like he did in
- 4:43high school, and he's he's really proven to be some kind of running back.
- 4:47You know, we talked about him, I think, kind of starting
- 4:49in the spring and then in our summer camp the improvement he'd made, because
- 4:55I'll be quite honest with you, when he got here, I was disappointed.
- 5:00You know. I thought he was very immature. I don't think he
- 5:02didn't take things very seriously. We didn't know that we had a position for
- 5:06him. But like a lot of these kids that you know that you coach
- 5:11in college, all of a sudden, the light bulb goes on and it
- 5:15did for Cam And all of a sudden, you saw this kid that had
- 5:19grown up really fast and had taken the time to develop his body and had
- 5:28become very serious about things, and I think had felt maybe felt maybe felt
- 5:34like he had a home at running back. And this is a guy that's
- 5:39taken advantage of his opportunities. And he's a war daddy. I mean,
- 5:44he's a dog. And I say that as a sign of respect. Man.
- 5:49It's just been really fun to watch a kid that initially you were like
- 5:55I don't know. I don't know, you know, I don't know if
- 5:58he's going to be what we want. Turning to a guy that you can
- 6:01point to as the poster child for what you want, and that's just a
- 6:05tremendous credit to him. I mean, just his ability to just recognize the
- 6:11situation he was in and change it with an attitude adjustment was It's like something
- 6:16you just keep pointing to as a coach. And I mean, you love
- 6:20seeing it, man, you love seeing it. Love seeing it because he's
- 6:25a hell of a good kid. That's another life lesson for guys out there
- 6:30in whatever pursuit they're in, whether it's sports or anything else in life.
- 6:33Right, I mean, hey, it ain't working out for me, Well
- 6:36I could bolt, I can take the door and go that way, or
- 6:41I can figure out something to make myself better. He figured it out,
- 6:45and like I said, it's just a great credit to him because I mean,
- 6:48and he knows this. There are some times where you're like, I
- 6:50don't know, man, I don't know if this guy has like the mindset
- 6:56that you want. And it was just it was just immaturity, you know
- 7:00what I mean. He's a kid, right, he was a kid,
- 7:04And it's so rewarding in this industry when you can watch these you know,
- 7:09these people we call kids transform into men, you know, and uh,
- 7:15I don't know, I mean, Jesus, it's just like you just go
- 7:18wow. Wow's that's what it's all about, right there, watching a kid
- 7:23like this turn into the man that he's becoming, and the ballplayer's becoming in
- 7:26the leader, he's becoming, in the respect that he's garnering now in the
- 7:30locker room as opposed to being, you know, a locker room clown.
- 7:32Now, all of a sudden, he's a freaking dude, and that's awesome,
- 7:35so cool. You can't have enough of those guys, that's for sure.
- 7:39Back in a moment, final time out with Jim Moore. We'll talk
- 7:42Boston College football when we return on Lear Fields
