- 1:11School in Hampton, Virginia, poke great.
- 1:15The white Vic Dwight. How are you tonight?
- 1:18Oh man, it's awesome. And I'm glad to be on this is
- 1:21going to be a lot of fun and I'm doing great.
- 1:23I'm going to pin the 703 Nova snowed in well more, so I can,
- 1:28but I'm only down, you know, I'm I'm ready to talk everything
- 1:33Tech and whatever comes about, that's awesome.
- 1:36Do I? Yeah.
- 1:37Appreciate you jumping on with us.
- 1:39You know, we were iced in as well.
- 1:41I was lucky enough to get today and tomorrow off.
- 1:45From work. So it's kind of been some bonus
- 1:47long weekend for me. So I'm loving it even though I'm
- 1:51not really traveling that much so it's all good.
- 1:55I don't even want that man. Right now, I'm here in the 804
- 1:57with Ron and I've got to wake up and work in the morning from the
- 2:00house so he can sleep in and everything 8 the way before we
- 2:05kick into, you know, Virginia Tech.
- 2:08You know the question we have for you, the stories you have
- 2:10for us you know obviously Victory Life.
- 2:14It's You, it's such a big part of you.
- 2:17So, you know, go ahead, tell us what you guys are doing with
- 2:20that about your podcast. Yeah I appreciate man the
- 2:23opportunity to speak. I'll be brief man but I created
- 2:27Victory life. Now about three years ago,
- 2:29Victory Life, LLC VI C KT, o Ry n just for your listeners and
- 2:34followers of your great podcast. I'm not an egomaniac.
- 2:38I just went with Victory life because I really like the name
- 2:41and I'll put my last name in it because it embodies everything
- 2:44I'm about. Plus if you Google Victory like
- 2:47they're a lot of churches and nonprofits so I was like well
- 2:49I'm not changing my name so there There has to be IC K and
- 2:54it. But essentially, man, you know,
- 2:57we have my organization, I have a Victory Life LLC, which is
- 3:02high school, internship program, life skills, groups outpatient
- 3:05counseling and I am believe it or not a licensed therapist.
- 3:08And you know I also do mentoring for kids in Prince William
- 3:13Fairfax, County fall Carroll County and even in surrounding
- 3:17areas in Northern Virginia and also help kids with Ladies as
- 3:22far as mental health diagnosis and anxiety and depression, you
- 3:27know, kids who have Oppositional Defiant disorders and just hope
- 3:31people young men and young women and their families, get back to
- 3:35function at a high level and just getting back to where it
- 3:37needs to be. So something I'm very proud of
- 3:40something and I am body growing up and especially tighten my
- 3:44skills up at Virginia Tech. When I was there, you know, I
- 3:47Montreal model, you know, that I may serve.
- 3:51So And then I have my nonprofit Victory like you Sports, which I
- 3:55had three, a, you organizations under.
- 3:58But it's not just more so about basketball, it's more so about
- 4:01helping students reach their full potential academically and
- 4:04athletically through community service competition and also
- 4:09giving back and paying it forward near local community.
- 4:12So the last several years, I've been really blessed to be part
- 4:17of something special and build my brand and then obviously I
- 4:20have to podcast which You know, it's funny, I'm not I don't ever
- 4:25view it as if I'm trying to get, you know, a bunch of listeners
- 4:28and followers. I just like to run my mouth.
- 4:30So I have a podcast called the Victory Life.
- 4:36Legacy podcast with Danny noakes my co-host.
- 4:40He's down in Richmond and 80 for.
- 4:41Shout out to my brother, Danny, who I met through my longtime
- 4:45friend? Kyle Bailey, he introduced us.
- 4:48Funny thing is, when I did the 2013 spring broadcast spring,
- 4:52I'm broadcast. Always the color analyst up in
- 4:56the booth up in Lane Stadium. He is peeing. 3 did, and I was
- 4:59the color analyst and Danny knows who's the producer my
- 5:03first time meeting him. And then later on, we end up
- 5:06doing the pregame show and now we have the podcast and I have
- 5:08my more popular podcast which is the Victory.
- 5:12Life Legacy Spotlight, where I interview some great people, not
- 5:17just athletes but cancer survivors, I had the great Lisa
- 5:21weather. Going on, the Virginia Tech,
- 5:23women's basketball. Great.
- 5:24Who's in The Sports Hall of Fame, Ace custis.
- 5:27And Rouse DJ Parker, of course, my cousin, Michael Vick's, been
- 5:31on there for UVA followers. I had Terry Kirby on.
- 5:35There's a great session, you know, a mod Hawkins Marques
- 5:40Hagan's, who's a wide receiver coach at UVA and a lot of High
- 5:44School coaches here in Virginia, you know, Troy man's, the form
- 5:47of Virginia Tech guard, who was a standout?
- 5:49Great Lauren Johnson has been on there.
- 5:52I can't name anybody but we got a YouTube channel so you can
- 5:55check it out. Subscribe to it please.
- 5:56I don't get any money. I just like the legacies of the
- 5:59people that come on. They're very inspiring stories
- 6:02and interviews so you can follow us that Victory Life YouTube,
- 6:07just go to YouTube and type in Victory Life and you'll see it.
- 6:10And of course, the podcast I do with Danny, I post on Twitter,
- 6:15we're only on Soundcloud. Like I said, I just like being
- 6:18able to talk sports talk. Like one thing we doing Legacy
- 6:22Spotlight, is we allow other people to Showcase their
- 6:27Journey, their story, knowing that one thing I do with Danny,
- 6:30on the one we do is we highlight people in the community who
- 6:34Inspire and make make the world a better place.
- 6:36Man. I know it sounds corny like a
- 6:39Whitney Houston love song, but really I'm here to inspire make
- 6:43people smile and have great conversations.
- 6:46That's what I live to do. So Victory Life, to those people
- 6:49who bought hoodies and t-shirts, I State the support.
- 6:54I come from humble beginnings. And I just want to give back, I
- 6:57had a great career. Now, I'm just trying to finish
- 6:59off and have a great life. You are an inspiration and what
- 7:03you do with Victory Life, things I've read and like you say
- 7:06helping the kids, I, you know, you've got your Master's in
- 7:09counseling, you do great things, man, and for us to have you on
- 7:13tonight, we are humbly humbly honored to have you, someone who
- 7:20does such make a difference in the community.
- 7:22So, One who does do all this stuff but someone who we got to
- 7:26see play as kids. You know, when you started
- 7:29playing at, Tech is about the time we started watching, so in
- 7:33obviously the name Vic and a few years, you know, Michael comes
- 7:36along and Marcus. And then you start looking back.
- 7:38As I know I did and I'm a nerd of Virginia Tech football the
- 7:42white. Don't follow me on Twitter and
- 7:45you know, seeing you make comments and stuff.
- 7:47Now before we get into being text, I've got one personal
- 7:49thing. I want to hit on, okay, because
- 7:51I know, And please Hoops for Patriot High School.
- 7:54I know they made it to States. Well no.
- 7:57Do they help you ship? They would have went to States
- 8:00but this year because the covid only the ones who the winner
- 8:03went normally do. Okay.
- 8:04So yeah. Should have been in the States
- 8:08but pink but your son is a freshman, I'm young.
- 8:12How did that was the Freshman, obviously, on a varsity team
- 8:16force first year? You know, that's a great
- 8:19question. And I have three kids morons, my
- 8:21youngest she's a Cars. 10 years old, she can she can run for
- 8:25days. She does the 400 200 Otis is
- 8:28Sydney, and Sydney, is up here in Northern Virginia.
- 8:31They're going, it's interesting. She goes to a different
- 8:33hospital, not saying because of zoning and when we moved and she
- 8:36didn't want to transfer the Patriots.
- 8:38So she's at Unity read, high school, he plays ball Club head
- 8:41at her school and she's she's you know, she wants to play
- 8:44collegiately and she got some interest from some schools.
- 8:48She Virginia Tech's on her wish list or school.
- 8:50She wants to get an offer from so So and then, but Isaiah man,
- 8:55he's my only son, he's my middle child and he's a freshman and he
- 8:58made varsity as a freshman just like Sydney didn't just like I
- 9:02did when I was in high school football, but Isaiah played
- 9:06football growing up man. As far as you know, 8 7 9, 10
- 9:10years, old 11 but he also played basketball and ran track but
- 9:14basketball. His body is, he's got my height
- 9:18but he's got my old metabolism. Though he is, if you see him on
- 9:24TV or you watching playing look, he's built like Kevin Durant or
- 9:27more. So Brandon e.
- 9:29He's like right now it's about 62 and a half, six threes, 14
- 9:33will be 15 in May of this year, and he plays for a great great
- 9:39coach. Who I love to death?
- 9:40Coach Sherman Rivers, who is the head coach at Patriots built.
- 9:44A great program. That's been there about five
- 9:46years. When a district four years in a
- 9:48row, been two states themselves, he's been closed and He played
- 9:52ball that Potomac, High School in Northern Virginia, he also
- 9:55went to women, marrying play collegiately there and he played
- 9:57overseas. So my son is very blessed.
- 10:00And I think when it's all said and done between Sherman, his
- 10:04coach and my son and his hard work ethic and his skill set,
- 10:08he's gonna have a chance to play collegiately.
- 10:10If, you know, of course, you guys.
- 10:11Stay on top of his grave stay healthy, but he's long athletic.
- 10:16You know, it's interested, man. You know, having no Vic in
- 10:20basketball, Would be kind of a change of pace because we've all
- 10:24kind of picked up the pigskin. Although, there is another Vic
- 10:27at Tech right now. She is a cousin of mine.
- 10:30She's on the women's track team kaliesha Vic, you know, people
- 10:34forget about, but, you know, Isaiah could be a next one up,
- 10:37man. And I had a follower, I wish I
- 10:39could remember, his name was really cool.
- 10:42I don't know who it was, but he said, can you imagine a vig
- 10:46Jersey on campus or another Vic at Virginia Tech?
- 10:49And I don't normally get all nostalgic.
- 10:52Eric. I'm a patient person that comes
- 10:54to appreciating the journey and you never know how things work
- 10:57out, but I am spiritual. And I do believe things happen
- 11:01for a reason. He even how I ended up at Tech
- 11:03and how I recruited Mike and Marcus.
- 11:04But, you know, my daughter and Isaiah, my two oldest went
- 11:09there. That would that would make me
- 11:10emotional. That would be crazy and you
- 11:13know, I am a huge Lord knows. I love Mi kyung.
- 11:17Gosh, I mean, how do you not like him?
- 11:20I if I hope I'm perfect. Like I'm not just talk is
- 11:24amazing. I just and I want to call them
- 11:27up and say, hey I got a son, you know, can you get it?
- 11:31Oh but I mean nepotism is a good thing but the same time he's got
- 11:36to earn that specially Tech is not just, you know, some doormat
- 11:40program. I mean, you know, he's he's
- 11:42built on buzzes done. So yeah, my son is, you know,
- 11:46having a son is and having kids is a blessing and having my son
- 11:50who, Wants to be great and I I purposely have exposed him to a
- 11:58lot of Grace. He's been very fortunate.
- 11:59You know, I for years until recently I have been to the
- 12:03spring game, like 18 years to 16 years straight or whatever.
- 12:06Can going back to played and he's got pictures.
- 12:09And he's been around, you know, Mike and my cousin and Marcus
- 12:15and DeSean Jackson, and he's, you know, throwing the ball with
- 12:18Tyrod Taylor and he's been around a lot of great.
- 12:22Guys, from Virginia Tech and even other colleges and other
- 12:25professionals. So him and my children, my other
- 12:29two children, all they know is greatness and scholarship
- 12:33athletes in Pro. So he doesn't really get
- 12:36Starstruck. He's been around Beamer.
- 12:37He's been around Foster and Cavanaugh and he's been around
- 12:40other great culture. So for him, the expectation is
- 12:44always been like okay, you know, my dad went here.
- 12:47Now I'm going to go here, but you mentioned when I played, I
- 12:50think it's funny too because Cuz he doesn't.
- 12:54He just now understanding the Legacy that Mike and I and
- 12:57Marcus had and also he's starting to give me a little
- 13:01credit for being good. Like he used to be like you
- 13:04because we didn't have Twitter and Instagram.
- 13:06So my stuff is now being converted, you know, I have to
- 13:10pull out the VCR tapes and get them converted digitally.
- 13:13So like he's looking like, yeah. You know, you really weren't
- 13:17that good. But then we go back to campus or
- 13:20when he sees my followers. And then, you know how they
- 13:24react and you know how I interact and how I do so much
- 13:26stuff and their reaction when we go back to Blacksburg leaving
- 13:29here in Northern Virginia and when I'm back home in Hampton
- 13:32people come up to me and take pictures or I'll sign some.
- 13:36He's like bro. Wait what?
- 14:00I've got two sons. I got a baby girl on the way in
- 14:02about a month. Awesome.
- 14:05My man Brian's got a son as well.
- 14:06So we are Fathers as well and it is it is it is being a father is
- 14:12nothing like it. It's a special referee.
- 14:15Congratulations. Yes that's awesome.
- 14:18And I wanted real quick and we got to talk But I wanted.
- 14:24What's so funny? Is, I wanted a girl first.
- 14:27So I have three kids want to girls want some of.
- 14:30I remember when I was pregnant, everyone's I all I know you on
- 14:33this and I was like, nope, they were like what she wanted, a boy
- 14:37first cuz she did want to do here and I wanted it because, I
- 14:41mean, I daughter because I, you know, women are intelligent.
- 14:45And I knew my daughter she was spoiled me when I get older and
- 14:48I needed somebody to make sure I was take care of.
- 14:52My so I seen adored his love for her father.
- 14:54You know, my son and I to but you know, sometimes he'll make
- 14:58breakfast and say, well, you know, you can make something put
- 15:00in the microwave like, you'll forget, you know.
- 15:02I'm so let me ask this.
- 15:22Getting back to your playing days, you know it's let's say
- 15:24it's 1994 covid hips. You've signed your letter of
- 15:28intent to play for Tech but there's going to be a spring
- 15:32season there guys right now have to make this decision.
- 15:35Would you have played? Oh man y'all coming out the gate
- 15:40with some hay maker questions. Listen.
- 15:51Who, you know what? Not knowing any better.
- 15:55I don't know. Wow, that is a tough question.
- 15:57My gut reaction just off the off.
- 16:00The rip is I'm going to play Because when you're I was 17,
- 16:04you know, it's funny, looking back.
- 16:05I probably should have started the following year.
- 16:08I was 8:47 grade. But I was 17 my first year at
- 16:13Tech and I turned 18 late. So I had that September
- 16:16birthday. Where wife is my wife, my mom is
- 16:19an educated. She's been teaching collegially.
- 16:21In high school wise for 40-plus years.
- 16:24So, I mean, she was like, you know, all into all that get him
- 16:28in school or whatever. So, but for me, I would covid
- 16:33scary. I lost a few people to it, but
- 16:36and I respect, what caliph Ali did.
- 16:39Even though, God, I love watching him play but knowing me
- 16:42as a freshman that was a real was a redshirt 94.
- 16:46I probably would have went anyway, you got to understand
- 16:50something. I know you guys.
- 16:51Been following Tech since I played and you follow the state.
- 16:55When we hear from where I'm from in Hampton and Newport News,
- 16:57Virginia in the Tidewater area. If you've been to places on the
- 17:01south side of Richmond, if you've been the Eastern, Newport
- 17:03News, or South Norfolk Youngs Park, or you've been other
- 17:06places in the Commonwealth, even, you know, rural places
- 17:11like, you know, parts of Southwest Virginia.
- 17:13I mean, we always talk about the urban, but when you come up and
- 17:16I had a great life, great mom and dad, but as far as what is
- 17:20scholarship, Any means you don't take that for.
- 17:23Granted so knowing their minds that I had, you know, I had
- 17:26tunnel vision. Yeah, I was and you know
- 17:28Hampton, I knew you know, night, grab me harshly.
- 17:32I was a backup intent grass started and I started getting
- 17:35letters from Pittsburgh and Nebraska and Syracuse and
- 17:37Oklahoma. I was like wow!
- 17:40This is what I knew it I was like I'm going to go to college,
- 17:42I'm going to go pro. So even though covid came if
- 17:46hypothetically speaking, I probably would have went anyway
- 17:49because I don't even like you I can't stay home because if I
- 17:53stay home you know nothing's going to be popping off here but
- 17:56drama not that I was involved anything - but you know we don't
- 17:59have a path or a goal unit up getting complacent.
- 18:02Next thing you know, you get get caught up so I probably would
- 18:06have just went and cross my fingers and pray and hope that
- 18:11everything worked out because I loved I just wanted to be in
- 18:15college. God knows with all this
- 18:17responsibility I have. Now sometimes I wish I can go
- 18:19back but But I probably would have went, you know, I like that
- 18:25answer. I really, yeah, I think
- 18:27sometimes looking looking past, as you said, getting complacent,
- 18:32I don't hands can can get you in trouble from time to time.
- 18:35So, yeah, I definitely see where you're coming from.
- 18:37From that perspective. No, doubt, I wanted to ask you
- 18:40this next, you had tweeted out a while back.
- 18:44Talking about, who was recruiting the 757 back when you
- 18:47were being recruited. I mean, he talked about guys
- 18:50like Calves high beam or Stein spring What was their pitch to
- 18:55get recruits to come to VT back then?
- 18:58Oh, great question. Um, it was really about building
- 19:05something and going against the grain, you know, because UVA at
- 19:09the time was still the Pre-Med program, protect was on their
- 19:12heels and it wasn't manufactured height and you know, Beamer in
- 19:18height and even guys like stiney and calves.
- 19:21They weren't Salesman like, you felt like it was authentic and
- 19:26what was really good as they had relationship.
- 19:28So I've talked about this numerous times and I'm in
- 19:32business and, you know, I work a lot of principles and
- 19:35psychologists and psychiatrists and coaches across the state and
- 19:40well-respected, and it's all sincere, it's give and take, but
- 19:43it's a lot of respect and that's what you felt like.
- 19:46When you saw those coaches walking your school, you saw how
- 19:48the other High School coaches, the custodians, the Death.
- 19:52Dad was like, Hey and get up and hug them, you like, oh wow, it's
- 19:57not just like I'm some bigwig from this, you can, you felt
- 20:00like whoa, these guys really know.
- 20:01My, my administrators and high school assistant coaches in
- 20:05basketball coaches. So it was really cool and their
- 20:10pitch was more so we are trying to build something and you know
- 20:14what's funny? This is not to pick on UVA.
- 20:16When London was there, I've been of you might London, he's a
- 20:18great guy, but I tease my UVA friends.
- 20:21I said You guys fix a too much on Tech.
- 20:26You know, we got a bill, somebody got to take the cup
- 20:28back, I get it I get it. That streak is crazy and looks
- 20:32like another one that be getting re started again but at the same
- 20:34time it was never about UVA when I was being recruited.
- 20:38You know it might have come up but it was more so about we're
- 20:42trying to build our own brand. We want you to be part of
- 20:45something and it was a lot of State pride and it was really
- 20:48just about Their relationships with your High School coaches
- 20:53and also the fact that, you know, to be honest, I just
- 20:55mentioned a few minutes ago about where I'm from.
- 20:58I didn't grow up, you know, it wasn't South Central and bang
- 21:02bang and people, but it was some rough spots and there was some
- 21:04stuff I saw in there was some trauma, you know, when you're in
- 21:08certain parts of my area, and I knew a lot of guys that didn't
- 21:11make it, and I knew people who were killed, I knew drug
- 21:14dealers, but you know, what was crazy and I tell people, I hope
- 21:16you're listening is understand. This is respectful statement
- 21:19being And high and cab and Stein spring, when they recruited the
- 21:25Commonwealth and some of those rough spots that people that
- 21:29other universities wouldn't go in.
- 21:30They went to and they went to without fear without judgment.
- 21:35Obviously, they were to get talent and they were there to
- 21:37recruit us to their University, to get an education and to play
- 21:41college football. But you could tell they were
- 21:44there and they weren't like, oh my God, there's hurry up.
- 21:47Like, they stayed if you watch the interview, I do it.
- 21:50Ano Whitaker he grew up in Youngs Park.
- 21:52It's a very rare rough spot in Norfolk and time spring was in
- 21:56there and went there religiously to recruit him and sat down and
- 22:01hung out. And you know, the thing about
- 22:03Beamer, I remember when I got home and my younger sister, he's
- 22:08three years younger than me and I got home from basketball
- 22:12practice. And it was my senior year and I
- 22:15came and had my batter drop along.
- 22:16She was like hold on one, she's like Dwight there's a dude here.
- 22:20Some old dude, with another dude, I was like what are you
- 22:23talking about? Is it then a living with Mom and
- 22:26Dad? I don't know.
- 22:28But I you know again I'm being on she's like I think they're
- 22:30rich because they had own suits and some big boom.
- 22:34And she said it looked like you know those Mafia you know and I
- 22:37was like Kim what do you think? So cuz he's Point anyway so then
- 22:40I Gordon and Bemis it's up and he's like hey how you doing and
- 22:44just shakes my hand and I'm like you could feel the energy him
- 22:47and height and hide have been recruiting me.
- 22:48That was the only year highly recruited the Hampton Roads area
- 22:51because they were going through a transition and he end up going
- 22:55back to the Maryland area because you know he's a DeMatha
- 22:57guy so I was fortunate height was a great recruiter and he is
- 23:01still even now just so authentic and I don't know if I'm
- 23:05answering your question fully but I think sometimes people on
- 23:09Twitter and on these message boys, think it's this, you know,
- 23:12because of social media you know, it's a lot of mail and
- 23:15balloons and girls with long legs and pretty skirt.
- 23:19It's that young Yeah, that's going to be part of the pitch
- 23:22when you get on campus. Yeah, but the foundation with
- 23:24great recruiters are laid doing those phone calls and text
- 23:29messages. And when they come as I
- 23:31mentioned, when you saw how they were in the building and how
- 23:35they talk to your mom and Dima man, was just so cool.
- 23:39And one last point about that, I met you, my mom was an educator,
- 23:42my both, my parents have their masters.
- 23:44My dad is a doctor. Yes, his doctor dr.
- 23:46Norman Vic. Both of them being
- 23:50college-educated when Beamer and Heights that down in my living
- 23:55room. Once I came in there, they
- 23:56surprised me at home. They did a surprise home.
- 23:59Visit my mom pulled out a list. Yeah, 20 questions.
- 24:04And she asked coach Beamer and Coach height and many of the
- 24:07questions was about race relations on campus security
- 24:11supervision, academic support crisis management
- 24:17accountability. Leti fund, and I was sitting
- 24:20like, Mom, why you ask mom was right?
- 24:25He was but Beamer without any admin, you know, without anybody
- 24:30prompting him, he answered every question.
- 24:32Like a g, and he knew what he was talking about and only one,
- 24:36he didn't know. He was like I'll make sure I get
- 24:38back to you on that, which he did.
- 24:39He got actually called her the next day.
- 24:43I'm telling you, man. I know it's old school but the
- 24:47principles are I'm discussing right now with relationships are
- 24:50still relevant. Now, I think that's where some
- 24:53programs fall short is that you got to have the right people in
- 24:57the right regions, but you got to make sure what they're
- 24:59authentic. Doesn't mean going to get every
- 25:00standout recruit, but it's going to give you that blueprint now
- 25:04Foundation where you see, right now with what's the kid's name,
- 25:09Jordan Williams? He returned to Tech, right?
- 25:11He's the grant transfer because he knew he really liked tag.
- 25:15You know, those are the things that we don't think about but I
- 25:18just feel like that's what start spring.
- 25:20What's the ice cream, man? Tech fans were always, never
- 25:24give him his full credit. He's always the subject of the
- 25:27memes and jokes because he's an offensive coordinator text
- 25:34love-hate relationships or offensive coordinator is
- 25:36forever. Going to be a give love hate
- 25:39relationship, but God spring. If you do what y'all do a
- 25:43podcast one day only. His recruits and who he landed
- 25:47from tap to Kam Chancellor and so on and so on, it's ridiculous
- 25:51and Stein. Spring is loved.
- 25:53I interviewed him he was on my show and Rabe like commented.
- 25:57He was like, I love this, man. And Tech was my second School,
- 26:01my second choice, but he wanted to go to Carolina, and he loves
- 26:05times, you know, me guys, come up to me.
- 26:07I mean, out of after my Mike and Mike, Vick interview star
- 26:11Springs interview on between Facebook, Instagram and Twitter.
- 26:15Is gotten thousands of in looks and interview.
- 26:18I mean, it got shared twenty thirty seven times on Facebook.
- 26:23I mean he is that's and that's what he is.
- 26:26He's genuine. That's why I used to laugh when
- 26:28people wanted him gone because I don't think they understood and
- 26:31I don't blame some fans because, you know, we have knowledgeable
- 26:34fan but it's not spring is another guy, man, he's going to
- 26:37be love these genuine, he gets it.
- 26:39I just think that relationship piece is essential in any line
- 26:43of business, especially The spores write something.
- 26:46So let me ask this then you actually kind of pivoting
- 26:49perfectly to my the next thing I want to bring up what's the
- 26:54difference right now between Virginia kids 1990s, when you
- 26:58were coming up and we were growing up in kids.
- 27:02Now, you know what sort of the make sure I put this right,
- 27:06what's the perspective on text from Virginia kids parents, 20
- 27:11years ago? They know more, they're more
- 27:13knowledgeable and social media has helped with them knowing
- 27:16more about other schools. I got my letter from Notre Dame
- 27:19one time and I was a big Irish fan and I Had a nortre Dame
- 27:23jacket because they know I was, I love Tony Rice and the rocket
- 27:27and that is sand bets and all those different guys.
- 27:30They had taught fight, you know, you just like another name you
- 27:34know and I'm living in Hampton Virginia and I mean I wore that
- 27:37jacket, you know I'm walking around Hampton and Newport News
- 27:40looking like a super-sized wash. With a low on.
- 27:43And and I remember my dad said, you like them, don't you?
- 27:48He was like, you know what, it located?
- 27:50I was like, nah, man. But I'm going, you know, and he
- 27:53was like, nah, I'm in 10th or 11th grade.
- 27:56And he pulls out for those listening, they're going to
- 27:58laugh at our old school, the old G's listener, and encyclopedia,
- 28:03and he blows the dust off, and he opens it up, and it's like,
- 28:06this is a map. You live here in Virginia Notre.
- 28:09Dame is in Indiana and You know you start back then do it now
- 28:14you get those media guys and the media got, you know, you saw how
- 28:19they had a lot of white Vic's, you know, a lot of Dwight VIXX,
- 28:25you know, on their roster and long story short, man.
- 28:30These guys now are just more knowledgeable.
- 28:34They are more aware and I don't think, especially with the dip
- 28:38in wins with Virginia Tech, you know, eight, when In 75 and six
- 28:46it's two folds in the 90s we were we were not we were the
- 28:52best kept secret. The Tidewater area was producing
- 28:56tons of talent and now you see the benefits between all the
- 29:03great players and the great colleges now that come down
- 29:08there, you know, Virginia guys have been leaving on the State
- 29:12Fair. Ever, you know, Ron Springs went
- 29:15to Ohio State know, maybe, you know, I forgot where Ron Springs
- 29:19is, but he's Shawn Springs, Dad, but he went out of state, he
- 29:22went to Lafayette High School, Lawrence Taylor who went to
- 29:25Lafayette High School from the Tidewater area.
- 29:27Went to UNC obviously and Dre blah, who went to UNC and you
- 29:35had romaker who was the only player to win national Gatorade
- 29:39Player of the Year and all in football and basketball and he
- 29:42The McDonald's All-American in basketball.
- 29:44He won three state championships at Hampton High one, national
- 29:47championship in football and one state championship in
- 29:50basketball. So this notion that, oh my God,
- 29:53Virginia players. Always leave that now, they've
- 29:56been leaving. The difference, is the Virginia
- 30:00that we know, compared to what we grew up and is no longer.
- 30:03The best kept secret, Ohio state, Alabama, Clemson the
- 30:07bigwigs they stay down there. Now, Penn State.
- 30:10They live down there. Every now and then.
- 30:12I pluck a player from my area now and it's not just Tidewater
- 30:16it's Loudoun County. You see a lot of those guys, go
- 30:18to Stanford. The West Coast, Northern
- 30:20Virginia. Kids are going out of state.
- 30:22And the other thing is, there's some other layers to it.
- 30:24The state of Virginia has improved dramatically.
- 30:27You look with LJ's doing Lauren Johnson and Holly Springs
- 30:30Veronica. The Richmond area was always
- 30:33known for basketball but now that's not the case anymore.
- 30:36There's some suburbs of Richmond.
- 30:39The Chester Chester feels the surrounding areas have
- 30:42Dramatically Northern Virginia, Westfield one.
- 30:44The state's three years in a row, used to be the Tidewater
- 30:46Richmond, show, and football and basketball, that is changed as
- 30:49well. All that combines with
- 30:52unfortunate, Virginia Tech and UVA picked their worst times to
- 30:56fall off. Yep, they did its best to you.
- 31:00Yeah. I mean, it UVA has been
- 31:02rebuilding for years and for years Tech benefit, you know,
- 31:07Tech benefited for years because they're, you know, you look at
- 31:10that. Five team, I believe their
- 31:13entire defense starters, that were ranked number one in the
- 31:17nation or maybe that was 07-08, but pretty much most their stars
- 31:20were from the Commonwealth and 2005 and 06 07. 08 Virginia Tech
- 31:26was signing and getting commitments from the some of the
- 31:28best players in the state. And then when you have Allen
- 31:34Iverson's the place, the code versus the moniker is a Tyrod,
- 31:38Taylor's and all these guys, Mike Vick they start to emerge.
- 31:42Crews have become household names, all the sudden it's the
- 31:47perfect storm and what makes things bad.
- 31:49If your Virginia Tech fan is, you know, as the transition took
- 31:52place from bheema to Fuente people pick on Fuente that you
- 31:57know the cynics and critics but at the end of the day the last
- 32:00three or four years of being his tenure weren't the best.
- 32:03You had a lot of six and six seasons.
- 32:05You had that one 85 season where they got blasted in the Sun Bowl
- 32:09against UCLA. Yep.
- 32:11And It's just not a good look. It's the worst time.
- 32:15Consider this during that time frame before.
- 32:19If Wednesday took over, you had a lot of guys that would have
- 32:23kept Tech afloat in that National brand.
- 32:25Peace. If they had chose Tech, but Tech
- 32:28kept finishing second, you had the Devon Forbes and the Ricky
- 32:32Slade unions. But you also had to Sean hand,
- 32:35Derek naughty daily homes, and all those guys pick Now, the
- 32:42school and Tech was always second.
- 32:45Even your boy that went to Florida State the tall defensive
- 32:49end. I forget His Name.
- 32:50Escapes me, that went to Florida State.
- 32:53Yeah, yeah. Do your worst.
- 32:59Mistake of his life was going on there.
- 33:00Oh, I'm sure I'm sure because they told me he was going to win
- 33:04number two and I'm like yo and your body wearing Dion's number,
- 33:10what they say come on. Detective rain coming home, you
- 33:16know wearing number two. No sir.
- 33:19You know I'm saying. So like I visited, you know.
- 33:22But I give Florida State and Ohio, State and Alabama, and all
- 33:27the schools Credit, you know, Dasani and I was with him,
- 33:31people don't realize this, his first unofficial visit or visit
- 33:35to any University. He followed my wife, and I are
- 33:38down with his high school coach at Virginia Tech I introduced
- 33:41introduced. To can Chancellor and Tyrod
- 33:45Taylor. I interviewed him on cowbell.
- 33:47He's radio show at the spring game.
- 33:49The same day, Chuck Clark committed.
- 33:52Tim said, oh, was that my football camp?
- 33:54You know, I used to do football camps.
- 33:56So I was doing a lot of high school subject in homes.
- 33:58There's a picture on the internet with me, him and Mike,
- 34:00he was at my Symposium. I did all those guys I mentioned
- 34:03were at my football camps. The only one we got was Tim
- 34:06settled and look what Tim said I was doing for the Virginia Tech
- 34:10brand and also look what he's doing.
- 34:12For the Washington football team.
- 34:14Now, just imagine Tech gets the rest of those guys even gets
- 34:17three more of those guys with Bud.
- 34:18Foster still in his prime, the perception of Virginia.
- 34:22The perception changes, you're going to win more games
- 34:24obviously. But the perception changes
- 34:27because to finally answer your question when I walk around now
- 34:32with my Bowl rings and my Virginia Tech gear on, I'm, you
- 34:35know, I still get how you played a tech but it's not like it was
- 34:3919 years ago, okay? Because Really cares about is 6
- 34:43and 16 people now are looking at, you know, the January 6,
- 34:49Bowls the New Year day, whatever.
- 34:51The, I don't know what day they cuss, like they keep coming on
- 34:53later and later, but the point I'm getting at is if you're not
- 34:56relevant relevant and if you're not in the mix outside of your
- 35:01fan base, it's pretty hard to make an argument.
- 35:05While you know, you're not meet, you know, we are dead team now
- 35:08and people walk by, you know, I know covid.
- 35:10The the sports bar scene is different.
- 35:12Different. But we are that gang when people
- 35:13say, why are they showing that game?
- 35:17That's what we've become. Yeah, and it's okay.
- 35:20Huh? What you saying is?
- 35:23If you have the album Davis mentality, it's just win baby.
- 35:27You start winning exception changes.
- 35:31Boom, absolutely look. And this is not me being
- 35:35critical. This is just me being honest.
- 35:37I deal with a lot of people and I don't want that to be the
- 35:41case. So, for everyone, listen, I
- 35:44wanted to be what it used to be, but better, I want I want, I'm
- 35:48you think I don't get excited when I see Khalil Herbert or
- 35:51these lineman that a little first round draft.
- 35:54I want, I don't have a pile of seeing why.
- 35:56It's why I tell her was that my can I know why it, you know, he
- 36:00wore 57. You know why I tell us my God.
- 36:03Like you think I'll take it personal that, he's better than
- 36:06me. I want the program to win the
- 36:08championship, I'm not the old head that's like, oh, we were so
- 36:11much. Tougher.
- 36:13No, no. I want, I mean, but at the same
- 36:17time, when you're part of a program in which you built, you
- 36:22know, and you made the standard what it is when you were there,
- 36:25when the lunch pail was established when you are, you
- 36:28know what it took. And, you know, now the
- 36:30expectations have dropped because of, you know, variety of
- 36:35reasons. You just wanted to get back and
- 36:37become better. You wanted to get back to where
- 36:39it was and then become better and That's the part like I told
- 36:43you guys Offline that hurts because, you know, that's my
- 36:47program. That's my University.
- 36:49I invest in him emotionally financially, I care about them.
- 36:52I don't want to see anybody fall off, but I think when you are a
- 36:56Virginian kid man, Virginia Tech still Virginia Tech, still holds
- 36:59wait, it's still a, you know, hey, a great University and to
- 37:02school people check for like, oh yeah, text in here.
- 37:06That, you know, then, but it's not sometimes what we think it
- 37:09is. And I think, Daddy only changes
- 37:13if you start like for example, this morning I did I probably
- 37:17have about 60 games DVR. I mean I got it this morning you
- 37:26know, you know, I don't do it just to analyze them break down
- 37:29tape. I just sometimes watch because
- 37:30you missed stuff. And today, I had on the Virginia
- 37:34Tech. Wake Forest game, Virginia Tech
- 37:36was three and one Wake Forest was to and to last year,
- 37:39Virginia Tech, be the rank Wake Forest team that It was really
- 37:42good. They weren't great.
- 37:44Yeah. But Virginia Tech expose them
- 37:45and it just looks good. When you beat a ranked team this
- 37:48year Tech was three point three in one in law, said, the empty
- 37:53wakes that Wake Forest, you Stadium.
- 37:55You can't you can't lose those games, you can't lose.
- 37:59That's the type of stuff. I mean when you know perception
- 38:01it's like the acc's week it all it is is Clemson, you know.
- 38:06And Virginia Tech used to be that team.
- 38:09And what makes me upset sometimes is Why Clemson was
- 38:13getting their stuff together with that bow?
- 38:16You know going for back from Bowden Tommy Bowden to devil
- 38:19when he was the interim and try it out and Bobby Bowden was in
- 38:23the same situation as Frank Beamer.
- 38:25And Jimbo was a coaching waiting Virginia Tech for several years.
- 38:29Carried the torch and the banner for the ACC.
- 38:32Yep. They were the big hair didn't
- 38:34win the conference. They were going to BCS bowls,
- 38:37and they were the standard, and then a game in, which I was at
- 38:412011. And Tech going for back-to-back.
- 38:44ACC Championship Games, Clemson limped into that game having
- 38:48lost four out of five or three out of four and therefore, they
- 38:54smoke Tech. I was there.
- 38:56I if I heard the fans for like Clemson, one more time I was
- 38:59going to jump off the ledge. That's how much, you know, we
- 39:05know what? Clemson go CLE and they spell it
- 39:07out. Yeah.
- 39:08It was raining and then we'll maybe even worse is Tech goes
- 39:13and plays in a bowl game and Clemson goes and plays in The
- 39:17Ballgame and they lost that year.
- 39:20I think West Virginia or was it? They lost 70 35?
- 39:26Yep. They got their doors off 73rd
- 39:29and be a year. Virginia Tech that year was 11
- 39:32and 2 and they only to record and losses was to Clemson.
- 39:37One at home, LED bulbs, that by my brother, Tajh Boyd and the
- 39:41ACC team. The game and coming off that, I
- 39:45just knew Tech was going to win because they are just beat one
- 39:47of uva's. Best teams in program history.
- 39:4938 did nothing. Yeah.
- 39:52And you know what, this on hand told me who was in the NFL, who
- 39:56was an All-American played at Alabama?
- 39:58You know, we talked all the time, he loved, but Foster this
- 40:01on hand told me out of his mouth, he's he laughed because
- 40:04the next week London and his staff, we're at Woodbridge,
- 40:07senior high school to recruit him and he was like, coach, I
- 40:10really respect. You are showing them after that
- 40:11shellacking. You know what?
- 40:22Great. You know, a little jab at them.
- 40:24Yeah but the perception to your question.
- 40:28Deshawn hand who was rated top five in the nation, Derek,
- 40:33naughty Jalen homes Josh where that'll and I'm probably
- 40:41forgetting some my all those guys were that was a legendary
- 40:44defensive line class, right? I think Joshua came the but the
- 40:48point I'm getting at, is they all knew about Virginia Tech all
- 40:51wondering wanted to go there and were considered Virginia.
- 40:53Tech means the perception is not that way anymore.
- 40:58That's how far are we from? That's not this on hand had Tech
- 41:02is his number one choice and and said Bill Bud.
- 41:05Foster was his favorite coach and recruiter.
- 41:08That is to show you. And remember that's not that
- 41:10long ago. Thats 2014.
- 41:16I'm Excuse me. 2011 sorry 2011 it's not that long ago at all.
- 41:22Like I remember the hand thing and everybody talked about Bud
- 41:25Paul auster and this is I'm going a little tangent here and
- 41:30the white if you need to tell me, step down, tell me step
- 41:32down. Are you Brooke?
- 41:34Basically, he told Deshawn hand, you're going to play inside and
- 41:39somebody said, saving, I don't know if this is true or not, but
- 41:42apparently they negatively recruited and said, you're an
- 41:45end, Sean hands in the league right now, where's he at?
- 41:49He's playing on the inside right now and I mean, do I don't know
- 41:54if you recall that but I could you, I remember seeing hands
- 41:57body and Like yeah, he's a bond. What technique would have been?
- 42:02And you probably talked about it 10 years ago.
- 42:05Are you brave enough free Tech. Well, here's the deal.
- 42:08Both Foster's honest coach. And before, you know it, did it
- 42:11a day I work just on hand out, he was at my me.
- 42:15And the guy by name is Keenan, Carter, who's a defensive line
- 42:19coach at women? Married, with Mike London,
- 42:20played at UVA. After I played a tech was a
- 42:23great player for them. He coaches collegially.
- 42:26He also coached at Howard University, Him.
- 42:28And I used to have afternoon/evening workouts up in
- 42:32Northern Virginia and Patriot High School and also Potomac
- 42:35High School where he went Deshawn hand Tim settle and if
- 42:39you are the local guys, Greg Stroman, was there a lot of guys
- 42:43that went to ODU and other schools that were from Northern
- 42:45Virginia? Would be the Ricky Slade was
- 42:47there? I know his dad very well.
- 42:48My point being is all those guys love Tech.
- 42:52They used to have textured so and stuff like that their
- 42:56trainer I know very well. Well, he trained to shine.
- 43:00I'm not gonna get into specifics about what saving did.
- 43:03I'm not about to put that out there and have allegations
- 43:05flowing but I know what I know saving did the same thing that
- 43:10Jimbo did the night before Josh sweat committed.
- 43:14They played the game. They just, they know again
- 43:19coaches. These guys played the game and
- 43:20they played upon Beamers age, and the fact that Virginia Tech
- 43:24was slipping and wasn't the same dominant program.
- 43:28And they played that with a more sexy program and they just told
- 43:32those guys what they wanted to hear.
- 43:34People don't realize, it's on hand didn't start until his
- 43:38senior, at Alabama, he did win a couple national championships
- 43:40and he had, he still contributed those previous Seasons but he
- 43:44didn't start to see here. I told John great up when he
- 43:47asked me, what made might choose tech.
- 43:49I told him, why? And I said, dude, you know, if
- 43:53you go to Virginia Tech, man, you are going to build a statue
- 43:56of you. I mean, you, you know, He loved
- 43:58Foster's defense, he loved but Falls, he he like brought buds,
- 44:03you know, realness his Charisma, he like Bud.
- 44:08But you know, Alabama came in and did what they had to do and
- 44:13you know he is inside and you know, it's just it's but I, you
- 44:17know, fans come to me all the time on Twitter.
- 44:20You know what this Tech need to do.
- 44:21We got to get this guy from Stanford.
- 44:24He's a great recruiter. Look at it.
- 44:26I'm like, listen. I'm I going to dismiss or
- 44:29debate, anybody on this to recruiting argument, everyone
- 44:32has different theories, whatever.
- 44:34The one thing I look at every year is peeing, 24/7, and Rivals
- 44:37list their commitment list and whatever, with the exception of
- 44:41Miami who gives great talent and they will get Talent until you.
- 44:44And I are we're all dead and gone.
- 44:46All right? Because that's the, you won't.
- 44:47Yep. But when else is winning every
- 44:52no listen, everything else is when you're nine and one and
- 44:56ranked 12. So you were playing for
- 44:58Conference Championship and your own, in Prime Time games, those
- 45:02tenth and ninth graders who yet to get offers, but they're, you
- 45:05know, they're going to be top, prospects are watching.
- 45:08They're looking at a certain point, I believe you.
- 45:11And I used to write actively for 24/7 Sports.
- 45:14I've been of you guys like, Tyrod Taylor Marshawn Williams,
- 45:17Ricky Ricky Slade, Junior, Ricky Walker and even all them.
- 45:22I'm for my calling back in the day and they all talk about
- 45:25watching, Brandon Flowers, and Um, Chancellor and Chris Ellis,
- 45:29they paid attention because Tech was ranked in the top 10, top
- 45:3212. Yep, you know, and that's,
- 45:35that's the correlation, Virginia kids haven't changed that much.
- 45:39Yes, social media to stay is grown.
- 45:43Northern Virginia is busting at the seams Richmond area is
- 45:45growing Short. Pump and Chester those great
- 45:48place Charlottesville is growing new.
- 45:50Can't all that. You can talk at the state's,
- 45:52Virginia is a beautiful state but the one thing that hasn't
- 45:54changed people want to be relevant, kids want to be
- 45:56relevant. You know, that's why everyone
- 46:00was shocked. Oh yeah.
- 46:01One year, when UVA was able to land, Quin Blanding smoke
- 46:04mizzell and Andrew Brown, you know?
- 46:06Because they were like, hold up man.
- 46:08You guys aren't even going to bowl games, you know?
- 46:12But I know, but I will say, this is my guy and his brother, Paul
- 46:19is my guy to my London to this day has great relationships with
- 46:24people. He's got great relationships.
- 46:26He's at, that's a great. He's charismatic.
- 46:27That you can talk. He's funny.
- 46:29He's, you know, you feel like you can trust him.
- 46:31Whatever it is, we did that. And I told people that and, you
- 46:36know, it's funny those guys, I mentioned smoke mizzell he was
- 46:39high on Tech and you brown was attacked leans.
- 46:43He again he was part of that class with this on hand and all
- 46:46those guys and we missed on all of them except for Timmy, you
- 46:53know but at the same time $20 guys.
- 46:57New about Virginia Tech is Virginia Tech was relevant that
- 47:01kind of says it. All right, there with with the
- 47:03perception, you know, winning definitely helps.
- 47:07But we've also seems like we've kind of step back a little bit
- 47:10on some of the relationships. We have especially getting guys
- 47:13in the high schools at the consistent level.
- 47:15Especially the relationships that you were talking about
- 47:17that, you know, beaner and height and stiney.
- 47:19We're doing when you were getting recruited, but we
- 47:23lately, we did get some news with like, some preferred
- 47:26Walk-Ons from some Some schools that we had in necessarily had a
- 47:29lot of success with lately, particularly Jabari Parker with
- 47:32Holland Springs there with ya Johnson is stuff like that is
- 47:36that something that can really help kind of heal.
- 47:39Some of those those areas of strife, they would kind of
- 47:43popped up with with the high school relationships for us.
- 47:46Absolutely listen. If I wasn't tight with Lauren
- 47:50Johnson, he's the best high school coach in the state of
- 47:53Virginia, okay? You know, I'm saying?
- 47:59So like this guy, Lauren, you get a couple of Holland spring,
- 48:02guys, because here's the funny thing about it.
- 48:04Perception again to guys, I know, Lauren Johnson his
- 48:09players. Greg Dortch and Kevon Wallace
- 48:13wanted to be Hokies and look what they did on the Collegiate
- 48:16level. Just look.
- 48:18I remember only when I remember when Kevon got the call from
- 48:22Clemson, he was like, no, I want, I want to go.
- 48:24I'm all about today. Trust me, trust me.
- 48:27I know. This for the be Lauren Johnson
- 48:29and I are tight. He dated my sister only football
- 48:32player of my teammate, I let date my sister that's all he's
- 48:36married. Now to another girl named Kim
- 48:38and they had a beautiful family including a son who took offered
- 48:43me first off. Yeah, so did the date it was he
- 48:46got to do that like tech tech. You got to get those guys that
- 48:49want to be Hokies that maybe the had three stars and get them in
- 48:55the building and eventually you create momentum and Pipelines.
- 48:58You saw in the late 90s and early 2000s.
- 49:01Those pipelines from Western Branch from Deep Creek, from
- 49:05Phoebus, from Hampton, from Bethel, you know, from Western
- 49:09Branch. You know, the Holly Springs the
- 49:12Hopkins Brothers Macho because they saw their older teen years
- 49:16in juniors going there and they say, wow, they're playing,
- 49:18they're happy. I'm gonna go there too.
- 49:21And then, then what happens is, you're winning.
- 49:23Text already going to kill it when it comes to food lodging
- 49:26presentation. Because it's a beautiful campus,
- 49:29that sells itself. You don't the crowd Hokie
- 49:32Nation, the loved a show. Now, you got a formula for
- 49:35success, and I think that's that's the relationships right
- 49:39now. And I think to be fair to Fuente
- 49:42and his staff, the Dead period covid.
- 49:46You know, tap who would had a plan who I know he did.
- 49:49I talk to tap? That's my guy.
- 49:51I think they were going to be some great things done, but the
- 49:55Dead period has killed not just A lot of colleges that need to
- 50:00get guys on campus versus a program, like Clemson in Ohio
- 50:03state that can sell itself. Yeah, but I think you get those
- 50:07guys in your walk on. You get these guys are even
- 50:11commit or guy, like Jordan Williams.
- 50:13You get those guys and playing well and they keep advocating
- 50:17because when they go back to the game when they go home for
- 50:19Thanksgiving and Christmas break and they go back home, they
- 50:22going to recruit and soda program for you because when
- 50:25they're walking around the mall there at the basket.
- 50:27Ball court in the waiting room and you're like that's Jordan
- 50:30Williams and he's got the tech tank top and shorts on.
- 50:33He's liftings like yeah, that's what happens.
- 50:37Nice to go back home and I mean, no, me and Mike will go back
- 50:40home. Will you be at the old Coliseum?
- 50:43All a new market Mall here in the barbershop you walk in with
- 50:46your Virginia Tech. Bowl game, sweat suit on your
- 50:49fitted cock to the side, your Bullring gleaming and your bag.
- 50:53You like yo y'all get like that. Yo, what's good?
- 50:56And all seven people like me? It is you for it for the fans
- 51:01and the kids who are up next. That's how you create the
- 51:05connection that dynasty. That, that whole, I want to be a
- 51:08part of it. It can't just be a coach.
- 51:12It's got to be your perception, your players who are currently
- 51:16there, who would like, yo, like look at Oscar Smith, another
- 51:19pipeline, JC Coleman. He was on my on my, on my show
- 51:23and he talked about how he would come back and he got a lot of
- 51:26guys there they come. To Tech from Oscar Smith, you
- 51:30know. Yeah.
- 51:31And you know he talked about covid and I feel like for a
- 51:35school like Virginia Tech for a team like Virginia Tech that's
- 51:38really trying to recapture some of that momentum on the
- 51:41recruiting Trail covid. Just was like the worst possible
- 51:44time because like I said, getting kids on campus is like
- 51:48it's part of the battle and being able to put tax plan in
- 51:51place for getting back in the high schools, the way it was
- 51:54done before. The, all of that was something
- 51:56that could Help with that perception with that momentum
- 52:00going into 21. And now, you know, we've got a
- 52:03dead period this now extended, what through the end of May.
- 52:06So yeah, I don't even understand that.
- 52:09I don't. Yeah, that dead parrot thing is
- 52:12good. I mean, I don't know, it's
- 52:14weird. I do think though, if we can
- 52:19hopefully have this spring game, I don't even know if that's
- 52:22going to happen or some type of showcase.
- 52:27This or something where Tech and get in front of somebody kids or
- 52:31vice versa. So I think you're going to get
- 52:33some more kids. I just love the changes, they've
- 52:36been doing in the offseason, I don't really get hype about a
- 52:39lot of stuff in the offseason because you never know.
- 52:42I mean, you never know with attrition DUIs in eligibility
- 52:45academics, you just never know. I mean, it's the that's what
- 52:49makes it beautiful the unknown, the unexpected.
- 52:52That's also, sometimes when makes it painful and detrimental
- 52:55because they are known. We don't know what we can build.
- 52:57Which is why Vegas has so much money.
- 53:00But at the end of the day, I guess I do like the higher, like
- 53:05the people who are in blacks were right now.
- 53:08Because I think, you know, when that day period is they know,
- 53:12from what I know and talking to people Pearson pray those on
- 53:15that staff. We played together for years at
- 53:17Tech. That's my brother.
- 53:19Justin Hamilton is my guy. I know they won and went and
- 53:23they get it and they were there. They know what it takes but
- 53:27their hand Cuff right now to some degree with covid.
- 53:29It's a it's it's a tough situation and make no mistake
- 53:33about it. You know.
- 53:34I lost some clothes people to covid and I'm sure you guys know
- 53:37some stories as well. And may have lost a few, it is
- 53:40serious. I'm not going to get political,
- 53:42I don't know. It's it's real.
- 53:43You can feel like it's whatever hopes.
- 53:46I know, it's real and small businesses and a lot of people
- 53:50have been affected and I'm just praying it eventually gets
- 53:53contained and we get back to some normalcy because for me,
- 53:56just, you know, football and sports, especially Virginia Tech
- 54:00Spring Game, all that stuff for therapeutic for me and so many
- 54:02other people and hopefully, you know, we can get over this hump
- 54:06and get back to, you know, getting guys in that stadium and
- 54:10seeing that place where I can again, 100%.
- 54:16We got to attend that first spring game, the first year of
- 54:18Jetson valente's 10 year and it was great me and this guy we
- 54:23drove up we drove back down. Hit all the spots.
- 54:26I'm going to say a couple things while I jump to my next
- 54:28question, you mentioned Jordan Williams a lot of people get on
- 54:32to Wednesday like he doesn't have personality yada yada,
- 54:35whatever Jordan Williams said something.
- 54:37When he came back he basically he said Tech was the runner-up.
- 54:40He's like the relationship I forged with coach for Entei was
- 54:44it held a lot to me and it was almost like the way he said and
- 54:48when I saw the opportunity you know Clemson's bringing people
- 54:52in and I'm seeing less opportunity.
- 54:55I still have the relationship with the head coach.
- 54:57So as you said before it matters and the perception our head
- 55:00coaches getting, maybe it's, maybe it shouldn't be that way
- 55:04because of those words from Jordan Williams, but you
- 55:06mentioned tap. Now, he's going to the NFL of my
- 55:0949ers Speed him, but man, let me tell you, Um they brought in
- 55:15your teammate. Somebody you have interviewed on
- 55:18Victory Life JC price. Yes sir.
- 55:20How do you feel about him coming in and you know I'm assuming
- 55:25he's going to probably pick up the reins of a lot of what
- 55:27Darryl was going to do. Jason price is a man's man, he's
- 55:31your defensive line Mommy, I can tell you right now.
- 55:35JC price is a guy you want to play for and you know they
- 55:39upgraded because tap was energetic.
- 55:42Take knowledgeable, insightful and was with it.
- 55:45You see the 49ers grab them so he knows what he's doing but to
- 55:49be fair he actually probably is in that same position and
- 55:52probably more knowledgeable and experienced because he's been
- 55:55coaching longer, he was on the staff and he led the way when
- 55:59JMU gave took one of the biggest upsets in college football
- 56:03history of the Year Tech won the ACC in 2010 led by Ryan and Ryan
- 56:07Williams. So at the end of the day, the
- 56:09guy knows tank and he can coach and you know, You don't you
- 56:14looking you, people say oh you know, he was at a mid, you know,
- 56:17made Marshall. Look, you don't make Marshall in
- 56:20JMU relevant by not knowing the landscape of his State and
- 56:23getting players that wanted and some should have gone to.
- 56:28Okay God do your homework. When you talk about these guys
- 56:31on Twitter, JC price was it was definitely a great hire when it
- 56:36comes down to it, man. No Fuente.
- 56:39You know we all be critical man because it's tough on.
- 56:42On a ledger and he, you know, the timeout is past year against
- 56:46Liberty. Oh my gosh, I felt for him.
- 56:49I was pissed. But I fell for, you know, I made
- 56:52mistakes. Yeah.
- 56:53Oops. I made mistakes as a player.
- 56:55I mean, how many times you know, it has allowed me to feel bad
- 56:58when he got called for holding and they gave the winning
- 57:00touchdown. I mean, or lll go.
- 57:03Shayne Graham talked about the do Mi, so he missed a field goal
- 57:06that would have wanted to beat us in Miami beat Miami and Miami
- 57:09Linden winning in overtime, but he felt awful that whole week.
- 57:13Edited a man, you know. Listen it happens.
- 57:16I think the whole personality thing is tough because went a,
- 57:19when you he doesn't he doesn't come across well on TV the same
- 57:25way dabble does you know dabble. You know to sometimes can be
- 57:28corny. That's me.
- 57:30He is you know, you know but his players love them and they'll
- 57:34you know, they're go to bat for him and they fight for him.
- 57:38And he's able to convince guys that shouldn't come back to come
- 57:41back and pursue a national champions.
- 57:42Ship and and that and Fuente is just got to be him.
- 57:46And to be fair, you know, the Beamer you guys saw a late in
- 57:49his career when he was turning his head and dab it and dancing
- 57:53and dancing in the locker room and UVA that Beamer didn't exist
- 57:57when I was at tank. If you remember what he looked
- 58:08like, he would kill somebody on the sidelines.
- 58:12Same word as JC Coleman and Brandon Flowers and Chris Ellis.
- 58:17God was not to be. We were there when he was
- 58:19building when he was on the hot seat, when he couldn't afford a
- 58:24laws, you gotta understand something.
- 58:26That's what I'm saying looking for into now and if he stays and
- 58:29keeps winning, he'll be a lot different.
- 58:31Then you got to be careful when you compare because Beamer
- 58:35doesn't come across as man. This guy's killing a room.
- 58:39You know, if that's not Beamer but the same time you Seeing now
- 58:43with his little dog, Frank, Hank, whatever, and he's walking
- 58:46around, he's cracking jokes and he's always been a funny guy
- 58:49that would roast you on the low and he's always been, you know,
- 58:51highly respected and just someone you want to be around
- 58:54and he was all, he's always been funny but you know, early in his
- 58:57career which I was there for, it wasn't fun and games.
- 59:02You know, after big wins. He might let's go and throw the
- 59:05fist in the air and hug, guys, whatever.
- 59:07I mean, we beat Miami for the fourth year in a row, in the old
- 59:11Orange Bowl went before Became Pro Player Stadium or whatever
- 59:15it's called. Now, I don't think name and
- 59:16Pizza Hut RS. I don't know what it's called
- 59:18but you know, we beat them back. Then I remember in a locker when
- 59:22I was elated and I'll hug them and I was just like cause we
- 59:25won. He was like, Hey, great when you
- 59:26know, I was like, okay, you know, like he was, he was, he
- 59:30was different. You get older become a grand dad
- 59:33and Shane's now, a man and doing it.
- 59:35You your looser, you know, your job secure, you can run, you can
- 59:39let your guard down a bit. You know, he wasn't doing the
- 59:42Nae Nae Ane. All that dough, Millie WAP, and
- 59:44all that stuff, you know, when we would are.
- 59:47So In fairness of Wednesday, he's not going to be doing all
- 59:53that right now. He's not going to come on TV and
- 59:56crack jokes because In fairness to him everything now on Twitter
- 1:00:01and social media is used against him even if he slips up whether
- 1:00:06it's a timeout or he missed says someone's name or you know he's
- 1:00:10guarded about who he's going to start.
- 1:00:12You know, it's just going to be his, everything's, you know,
- 1:00:15we're on edge, because Hokie Nation.
- 1:00:17If there's a fan base, that deserves a national championship
- 1:00:20and deserves answers and deserves wins, its Hokie Nation.
- 1:00:24I mean, you look at the Red Sox before they got over the hump
- 1:00:28that Cubs the Cavaliers and basketball.
- 1:00:31Virginia Tech has suffered Decades of.
- 1:00:34We almost had them like the dollar and that insurance
- 1:00:37commercial. We have almost had it so many
- 1:00:39times the Matt Ryan You know, go back to my years, the temple
- 1:00:43game on the goal line, we're ranked 14th, we win that game.
- 1:00:46We jump in the top eight, you know, the laws against Kansas,
- 1:00:50you know, in the Orange Bowl and Brandon Brandon or sit out the
- 1:00:54first half because of Team violation, rules Tech has been
- 1:00:57on the doorstep for years and now with the offense of talent
- 1:01:02and the offensive scheme, whether we want to admit it or
- 1:01:06not, we made it up in our mind that we're going to be in this
- 1:01:08National Championship especially when we come out the gate.
- 1:01:11Eight in 2016 and take Clemson to The Verge and we get down
- 1:01:16there. If what they said after the game
- 1:01:17he's going to go for two and you got Bucky and Isaiah for you
- 1:01:21like man, Clemson is Clemson and we won the coastal in his first
- 1:01:24year and we did it to myself with the expectations.
- 1:01:29So now, you know, I don't think Jordan Williams is lying, you
- 1:01:33know? Ask me.
- 1:01:34I don't think Ashley's line Richard Ashby.
- 1:01:36I don't think Pablo's. I don't think Stan Rogers a
- 1:01:39line. That's their coach.
- 1:01:41I think he's just guarded, I think he's just going to get,
- 1:01:44you know, be who he is. And I don't really care if he,
- 1:01:50you know, didn't speak. And just talk in Sign Language.
- 1:01:53I just need wins. Okay.
- 1:01:55They, you know, I, you know, I mean, you know, do I want a more
- 1:02:01personal for? Yeah, but there's a lot of guys
- 1:02:04who are great and press conferences and they haven't won
- 1:02:07anything in four years and got fired.
- 1:02:09Yeah, you know, the fine line. Between being charismatic, but
- 1:02:12still losing in the fourth quarter.
- 1:02:14I don't care. Oh my God.
- 1:02:15I just don't want you going out there and losing the weight and
- 1:02:17getting blown out of pit. Boom.
- 1:02:20And look at this, do you think do you think savings trying to
- 1:02:23be around? We don't know.
- 1:02:26I mean his pressure is he looks like he hates the fact, the sun
- 1:02:29is shining, but at the end of the day, his players love them.
- 1:02:32And the fact is he's win. So he can kind of be like that.
- 1:02:36It's funny because Belichick now when he was winning so much I
- 1:02:40know that Pros, but everything was gray.
- 1:02:42He could be that way. Now you start losing.
- 1:02:45You know, it's viewed differently because losing does
- 1:02:47that. I said this one time on another
- 1:02:49show. Maybe.
- 1:02:51I think I tell you say that to you too.
- 1:02:52You know, losing ages. You everything looks bad.
- 1:02:56You look worse, winning, we Cuban eight.
- 1:02:59You everything looks better food, taste better.
- 1:03:02The Outlook is brighter. And you know, Forte just, you
- 1:03:05know, him and his staff of got to win and it's the what have
- 1:03:09you done for me lately world. And as far as his personality,
- 1:03:13you know my guys in the burger told me they loved them but
- 1:03:16false or not talk one time. He said, Vicki if you ever met
- 1:03:19him you know you would like him a lot, you know, he told me, he
- 1:03:24reminds me a lot of Frank. So I trust both Foster.
- 1:03:29I just think right now we combine our frustrations with
- 1:03:33the losing or inconsistencies and then it's human nature for
- 1:03:38anyone when something's not going, right?
- 1:03:40We all need to find Someone or something to blame.
- 1:03:43And I think that's what happens especially in sports.
- 1:03:46And there are too many variables just to blame one guy.
- 1:03:49But when you're the head coach, that's the way it works.
- 1:03:51And especially when in people's mind, you make enough money
- 1:03:54where you should be doing better and it sucks but it's the way it
- 1:03:59is but hopefully things change. I know.
- 1:04:01That's a contingency of fans that think it won't and there's
- 1:04:04some that would think it will. I'm a wait-and-see guy.
- 1:04:08I choose to be optimistic mostly Time.
- 1:04:11I'm a realist though. I think right now we got to play
- 1:04:14better and we got to have a better football like you and it
- 1:04:16better identity during the season.
- 1:04:18Yeah, absolutely. Yeah.
- 1:04:21During the season, there were points in time last year where
- 1:04:26you know, there were certain parts like in the UNC game and
- 1:04:29then there were certain ways we play defense against Clinton
- 1:04:31that me, and Brian literally said that team showed up on both
- 1:04:35sides of the ball every week. We would be running for the
- 1:04:38national championship. It was the consistency.
- 1:04:41Distance eut in consistencies back and forth.
- 1:04:44I'm gonna ask one more about a coach.
- 1:04:46Well, coach analyst whatever. Any thoughts on John tenuta?
- 1:04:50I don't know if you know him, you know.
- 1:04:53He's got a son playing down there, he's been everywhere.
- 1:04:57It seems as a DC or as a football coach and he
- 1:05:00relationship with him. And if so what do you think of
- 1:05:03the higher? I don't know to know her
- 1:05:06personally but I think it's a great hire.
- 1:05:10I say this, you know, people that, you know, again want to
- 1:05:12find criticism. Well, he's at UVA guy.
- 1:05:15Well, here's the thing, but Foster when he was trying to be
- 1:05:17a coach he interviewed for the UVA job.
- 1:05:20Okay. So, calm down, you know, day,
- 1:05:24you know, people don't people don't need to understand
- 1:05:25something in the offseason. This whole robbery stuff that we
- 1:05:29have on Twitter with the means and the people getting personal
- 1:05:32into fights in the parking lot at tailgates.
- 1:05:34These coaches hang out together golf together, they talk during
- 1:05:38the season. They text each other.
- 1:05:39They talk about players. They consult one of this of
- 1:05:42business. And if you know anything about
- 1:05:45old-school listeners, listen to this show.
- 1:05:47Google fill our nation. And what he did, he was the same
- 1:05:50person before to neuter. He came to Tech and help bhima
- 1:05:55create his Mantra on defense. He helped create the lunch pail
- 1:05:59defense for Bud Foster, right? So, at the end of the day, Phil
- 1:06:03H, I'll Mason was a Ernie man to, but he came in and created
- 1:06:07that eight-man front that Boston could but coach, but Foster took
- 1:06:10to the next level and made it the lunch pail D, which is
- 1:06:14legendary in the history of college football, right?
- 1:06:17So to neuter, is another guy and not only do they do great work
- 1:06:20in Cincinnati. He did great work wherever he
- 1:06:23went because he's a great coach to be honest with you, man.
- 1:06:27I'm already hearing. His impact is being felt in the
- 1:06:29locker room, not a locker room, but in the office is the coaches
- 1:06:32meanings. Justin Hamilton.
- 1:06:34The right guy for the job. I think he heard him speak.
- 1:06:37We saw when he was able to get his hands on the defense, they
- 1:06:40got better to statistically. And with the eye test as the
- 1:06:44season went along late in the season I think you got to give
- 1:06:47somebody like that a chance, you know, to learn from someone like
- 1:06:51to neuter because I'm here because I learned from people
- 1:06:54that, you know, when my predecessors and mentored me, I
- 1:06:58don't care what line of business and you got to have somebody to
- 1:07:00consult and leads you and teach you.
- 1:07:02So there's nothing wrong with That and I'll just add that at
- 1:07:06the end of the day, it's a great high for Tech man, you throw him
- 1:07:10in there JC price those guys on winners then winners and they
- 1:07:15can coach. They can coach their asses off.
- 1:07:17And on top of it, they know the game.
- 1:07:20And you got to have people like that in your building, but I
- 1:07:25don't know him personally, but I saw that.
- 1:07:27And that's one of those hires man, you know, when you sign
- 1:07:32certain players, so you hire certain coaches We live in the
- 1:07:35world where you know if it's not impactful as far as like at that
- 1:07:40moment. I oh my gosh, man.
- 1:07:42You know, that is that's a great higher and then you know, months
- 1:07:46later a year, you know, turns out it wasn't what we thought,
- 1:07:49right? Like when Dwayne Lawson was the
- 1:07:51quarterback of the future. We were so hype and that never
- 1:07:53panned out, you know? I'm saying you use.
- 1:07:56There's a lot of guys like that. They'll Juju Clayton aware that
- 1:07:58there's all these guys. Oh my gosh.
- 1:08:01But then all of a sudden, quietly, a guy commence or coach
- 1:08:04comes On board and years later, you're like, wow, how big was
- 1:08:07that? Like even when we signed the kid
- 1:08:09that you kogai Jerrod Evans that really wasn't calibrated, that
- 1:08:15wasn't people, didn't go crazy with that commitment.
- 1:08:18And then look what he did in the record books for Tech, and the
- 1:08:20Coastal Division title. So I think to notice the same
- 1:08:23kind of higher, I think you look at what he does.
- 1:08:26I mean, I think there was more talk about him being a UVA guy
- 1:08:30and what he said about tech when he was on UVA staff.
- 1:08:35But here's the thing, how many fans that listen to the podcast
- 1:08:38or get on Twitter say I'm never watching Tech again.
- 1:08:41They will never get a dollar for me just team is trash fire
- 1:08:45everybody. And then next we did like oh
- 1:08:47great, wind Hokies are love you Hokie Nation, great win over
- 1:08:50Miami, we do, we do that. We're emotional history of most,
- 1:08:56we are we do, the noodle was a UVA guy that season.
- 1:09:00He was talking trash bash, and it is what it is.
- 1:09:04You think with my son being a basketball, Prospect of UVA
- 1:09:07offered him and take, didn't I would be singing while who all
- 1:09:10day during basketball season and I like, you know, it's it is
- 1:09:15what it is. But I mean I hope that calls but
- 1:09:19anyway but like y'all you know just answer your question guys.
- 1:09:25That was a great hire. I like that a lot.
- 1:09:27I did I actually that's probably the most excited.
- 1:09:30I've been besides JC joining the staff.
- 1:09:32That's awesome. Yeah I was looking at was like,
- 1:09:35yeah, this this guy. Can I feel like can do what I
- 1:09:38think. Tracy claeys was originally
- 1:09:40brought in to do, but never really seemed to have success
- 1:09:43with. I feel like, you know, to nude
- 1:09:46his role is going to be kind of that guy to, you know, hold the
- 1:09:51mirror up and maybe even find blind spots that Justin Hamilton
- 1:09:54doesn't see and kind of fill in those areas and make him a
- 1:09:57better coach in the long run. So yeah, I definitely didn't
- 1:10:00run. Yeah, and to your point about
- 1:10:03those blind spots. I'll tell you one that, you
- 1:10:06know, I think Justin was, she could have back, I never asked
- 1:10:08him about it. But like, that Liberty game,
- 1:10:10many people talk about that, time out, that coach Fuente burn
- 1:10:14for the Personnel lineups, everything like that.
- 1:10:16But prior to that, you know, the defensive alignment where Justin
- 1:10:21backed off everybody. And then they got that quick
- 1:10:25first down, and they made the kick, much easier.
- 1:10:28Yeah, but it was almost like Tech wasn't supposed to win that
- 1:10:31game. Anyway, because I saw that
- 1:10:33kicker Or and after he played Tech and he was absolutely
- 1:10:36garbage. He couldn't kick but he you know
- 1:10:41that's that's you know, Liberty Liberty made a great wind, I
- 1:10:45think, you know, you know, back to your point about to new to,
- 1:10:48you know, fill in the gaps and those blind spots, I think
- 1:10:51that's the fine line between winning and losing, not just for
- 1:10:54Virginia Tech but a lot of programs because, you know, the
- 1:10:57Liberty game, the Wake Forest game just a lot of games, just
- 1:11:02the last two seasons. The game against Kentucky, where
- 1:11:05they had it converted wide receiver playing quarterback
- 1:11:08that was false as last year. But there were a lot of games
- 1:11:12and if we went to his tenure, when he gets Milan and
- 1:11:15criticized for a variety of reasons more, so losing the
- 1:11:18game. But there were times within a
- 1:11:20game where I felt like the staff was just a little bit off with
- 1:11:24their coaching decisions and I think sometimes it's a matter of
- 1:11:30adjustments. And sometimes it's a matter of
- 1:11:32being lucky who's the gentleman Brought in a few years ago from
- 1:11:35Minnesota, he's a journeyman to the offensive consultant that
- 1:11:39left heel who dare Kill. Ya, Jerry kill saw what he did
- 1:11:44for our program that year. We made the run one in the end
- 1:11:46of the season. Went out of five out of six or
- 1:11:48whatever, after the Duke debacle, and they doing Hendon
- 1:11:52hooker as a starter bench Ryan. Well, let's put offensive ly
- 1:11:56along with Buzz, shutout defenses, and things like that.
- 1:11:59I really felt like that was a great guy to bring in because
- 1:12:03he's going To do with the nude. Again there's going to do.
- 1:12:06Excuse me. Yeah, yeah, definitely wouldn't
- 1:12:09kill came in. It felt like almost like the
- 1:12:11offense. Had more Direction.
- 1:12:13Didn't put players and as many bad spots so yeah, I definitely
- 1:12:17think you have to do to can do something similar with the
- 1:12:19defense that's going to be good for us.
- 1:12:21Uh-huh. I'll say that.
- 1:12:23I wanted to ask you this question.
- 1:12:25We saw a tweet come through the other day from you regarding
- 1:12:28like transfer portal and stuff like that.
- 1:12:31I'll read it to you and I'll let you kind of respond to it a
- 1:12:34little bit. Here.
- 1:12:35Okay, believe me. I know everyone has a reason but
- 1:12:38breath some of you guys are just running.
- 1:12:44You know, and take things forget, I talk about other
- 1:12:47programs to and people like, oh, Quincy Patterson.
- 1:12:51And I'm like, first of all, Quincy, definitely you knew he
- 1:12:54was leaving. That was inevitable hooker.
- 1:12:58Actually he I think he made the right decision by leaving
- 1:13:02because I felt like and again I'm not now locker room.
- 1:13:05I'm not in the quarterback meeting room, I felt like with
- 1:13:09him having to health issues in the beginning and you know them
- 1:13:13throwing him in the Mix and late in that game against you and see
- 1:13:17where he just was on fire. I'm sure he was uncertain about
- 1:13:20his future, so that makes sense. But just same time, there are
- 1:13:25some Tech players and some other players across the country where
- 1:13:30they got to learn how to fight, man.
- 1:13:32You gotta learn how to snap that.
- 1:13:33And I'm not talking about Floyd Mayweather Tyson.
- 1:13:35I mean, you know, because people two words, yeah, I'm talking
- 1:13:38about fighting adversity, people don't realize, it's almost
- 1:13:42transfer from Tech. I was a redshirt sophomore.
- 1:13:44And this is back when Tech the Golden Era of their offensive.
- 1:13:48Lineman, you know, when you know, I was there.
- 1:13:50DiNapoli Derrick, Derrick Smith tied Washington, Chris Malone,
- 1:13:56Bill Conti Jim Pine some of the best ever.
- 1:13:59Yeah. Jay hey good TJ Washington.
- 1:14:01Mike by an shit you talkin about some great matte layer, David
- 1:14:07Candela you know. Anthony Davis came behind me
- 1:14:11that was the golden are. I think this year you had a
- 1:14:13snapshot Of what it could be if they keep getting guys like what
- 1:14:16they had their today. I mean this season, but I'm
- 1:14:20playing but, you know, you're 18, 19 years are I'm like, why
- 1:14:24am I not starting? I mean, I lettered as a redshirt
- 1:14:27freshman, I'm playing a lot as a redshirt sophomore and I'm
- 1:14:33playing in the important parts of the game, but you want to
- 1:14:37play more and I'm like, I'm just as good a Janeiro and Janeiro
- 1:14:40and I are brothers, that's my guy, so it's not personal.
- 1:14:44So To be fair, I did talk to my dad about transferring to
- 1:14:48Hampton University. I was looking at JMU has some of
- 1:14:51my friends that left and I called them and they were like,
- 1:14:55absolutely. Now that coach know you're
- 1:14:57interested but my dad was like, you shouldn't leave.
- 1:15:01What are you doing? You're playing.
- 1:15:03You guys are going to the Orange Bowl e with ten in one.
- 1:15:05You know, you're playing, you're contributing, you're in the mix.
- 1:15:09And you're, you're going to start next year as a junior and
- 1:15:12it kind of was a smack in the face over.
- 1:15:14Oh, the phone like, yeah. Wake up, snap out of it.
- 1:15:17And then we're got back to coach height and Coach Grimes and
- 1:15:22Beamer and different coaches talked to me, and they were
- 1:15:25like, you're not doing anything wrong, which is very talented
- 1:15:28and you just got to keep fighting.
- 1:15:30And there were some things I needed to do better, and the ego
- 1:15:35is very powerful because it addresses, your conscious and
- 1:15:38subconscious. He when you don't think it does
- 1:15:41and the ego is the manipulator to, because your start,
- 1:15:44Analyzing bad decisions. Yeah, yeah.
- 1:15:46Well I should I should have done this.
- 1:15:47I should have lead, they don't respect you, you know it's like
- 1:15:50that angel devil on your shoulder and the devil was like
- 1:15:53you got to go, you're not appreciating you, you know, you
- 1:15:56you were from Hampton. You you were fourth in the
- 1:15:58nation by sporting news and you were ranked and you only playing
- 1:16:0327 snaps. You need to start, thank God, I
- 1:16:08didn't. Listen man, I stayed and I
- 1:16:10fought End up meeting my wife, the following year, my future
- 1:16:14wife and was part of some great wins, be Alabama.
- 1:16:18My senior year, you know, as you guys mentioned, I'm one of the,
- 1:16:21you know, one of the best players to play there and that's
- 1:16:24me know, William Boatwright. So many guys why I tell her, you
- 1:16:27know, I feel like I'm honored just to be mentioned.
- 1:16:30So at the same time, some of these guys have been lied to by
- 1:16:34their trainers and 707 coaches in their High School coaches.
- 1:16:38They're being lied to. I mean, think about all the
- 1:16:40greats that stay. Fade and fall.
- 1:16:41I mean, look at the guy, like, Greg, Boone who I saw in high
- 1:16:44school at Oscar Smith and he was an animal and they put him at
- 1:16:48Tech at tight end. And he was a quarterback in high
- 1:16:50school and they were reading that wild turkey with him, which
- 1:16:53is the text version in the Wildcat and he had some great
- 1:16:56runs in the Red Zone but didn't really pass the ball to him that
- 1:16:59much. He wasn't utilized like Bucky
- 1:17:01Hodges and rightfully so him. Bucky are two different types of
- 1:17:04body, builds and different types of tight ends but Greg Boone.
- 1:17:09And the Lesser College could have been missed In his own,
- 1:17:12right? But here's the thing.
- 1:17:14You talk to tech fans. He was a stud, you know, it's
- 1:17:17just it's your perspective, he was a, he was a great blocker,
- 1:17:20he was reliable. He has some key catches.
- 1:17:23He was a great and short yardage.
- 1:17:25He had to let you know, some great runs in the red zone and
- 1:17:29he was reliable. Like I said, you know, it's just
- 1:17:31sometimes you don't realize that you are in a good position.
- 1:17:35I do think some of these guys are being misled and I think
- 1:17:38some of these guys are are making bad.
- 1:17:41Decisions. I think some of these guys are
- 1:17:43running and I have no problem, I'll say it again, like Samuel L
- 1:17:46Jackson, I'll tweet lie again. You know I'm saying like, you
- 1:17:52know, at the end of the day I think guys have to learn how to
- 1:17:56compete, man. I mean, Brandon Flowers.
- 1:18:00Shout out to the OG when the best that do it, the goat.
- 1:18:03In my opinion, Brandon Flowers, today's his birthday.
- 1:18:07He was sitting behind Jimmy Williams.
- 1:18:09Who was a unanimous All-American?
- 1:18:11You know now Brandon Flowers is that Tech.
- 1:18:14You know, I'm not saying he would Brandon but the kind of
- 1:18:17player that that like him wouldn't go and wake behind
- 1:18:20Jimmy Williams. He said I'm saying, is that
- 1:18:22making sense? Absolutely, you know, some of
- 1:18:24these guys are premature and you know what?
- 1:18:27I'm not going to do this but I'll say it.
- 1:18:31I won't get on Twitter and then people because I don't like, I
- 1:18:34don't want to make it personal, but I'll say this, there's a
- 1:18:37strong track record of a lot of guys leaving and not doing well.
- 1:18:44And you guys, you probably know some you thinking about right
- 1:18:47now who were premature and them leaving, and they left.
- 1:18:51And again, some guys leave and you like, hey, you need to go
- 1:18:56closer to home or, you know, their position coach laughs,
- 1:19:00and, you know what? However, it is or but I mean
- 1:19:03like, for example. All right, I'm going to say a
- 1:19:05name and I get it. I still maybe you guys got the
- 1:19:08scoop on what happened? Why it is?
- 1:19:12My gosh, I'm bad with names today.
- 1:19:14The kid he was he did it go to Missouri.
- 1:19:18The receiver that dude was there last year that with opposite
- 1:19:22side? Trey Turner the receiver
- 1:19:25Hazleton. Yeah.
- 1:19:27Yeah, you know, I don't know him don't know his story but Dude,
- 1:19:32you had what 10 touchdowns last year?
- 1:19:36What's the? I don't get it, you go to
- 1:19:37Missouri, I know, text regnum it, come on now.
- 1:19:40I mean again, maybe there's something going on, maybe he's
- 1:19:43got a girlfriend there, maybe they got the education
- 1:19:45department that I don't know, but some of these guys I don't
- 1:19:48get it. It's what I mean, it's not just
- 1:19:50about to transform Porter, it's just like some of these guys
- 1:19:53just like, you know, it's a different mindset, it's kind of
- 1:19:57like a me. You, we were all hanging out.
- 1:19:59And I was like, you know what, tonight, I feel like Papa
- 1:20:02John's. I've had enough of, you know,
- 1:20:04Domino's, you know why I want to Gumby's Pizza, you know, I just
- 1:20:08you know what was wrong with? Not just, you know, I just feel
- 1:20:10like you know, I want to travel now I want to go check out New
- 1:20:14York. You know, you just that's why I
- 1:20:15feel like some of these guys are doing.
- 1:20:17Yeah. You know, like I want to.
- 1:20:19Yeah. Hey yeah.
- 1:20:21Check it out. As soon as the first sign of
- 1:20:23trouble, it's like all right. Well, I'm gonna try something
- 1:20:24different. Yeah.
- 1:20:26Yeah. There's some of them that make
- 1:20:29sense. Don't get me wrong, because in
- 1:20:31this is numerous schools, because I look at the portal.
- 1:20:3547. All the time that I was here
- 1:20:36about guys transferring some of them you look and it's like
- 1:20:39they're like seventh on the death truck but they're
- 1:20:41talented. Their goal is in their mind is I
- 1:20:43need to get on the field so people can see me play and you
- 1:20:48get that and then but then there's guys like Hazleton who's
- 1:20:51going to be on the field and it's like to your point.
- 1:20:54Well is Damon. We don't know the store but
- 1:20:57could the backstory be, he's got his degree, they have a good
- 1:21:00master's program and he's thinking I'm gonna probably try
- 1:21:04to chase my enough. L dream.
- 1:21:05But I want to get my masters and that universities really good.
- 1:21:09So there's a different reason then I think to your point.
- 1:21:13Some guys are like, man, I'm I'm third on the time thirst ring on
- 1:21:17the depth chart man and coaches. Always riding me and man.
- 1:21:21I'm tired of it to your point. Is you make it bleep.
- 1:21:26You make a great point but I'll just add, you know, I don't know
- 1:21:29if you saw it yet but he was on my show to Vontae Beckett.
- 1:21:33All right. Stay back behind move the top it
- 1:21:37will cry. Can't say his name.
- 1:21:38The kids from sailing with all the hair and also Jalen.
- 1:21:42Yeah, and the Edmonds brother, right?
- 1:21:44He was telling me this and he got into the trouble, which
- 1:21:47everything later was dismissed but he ended up being Conference
- 1:21:50USA. Deep is the played a year and
- 1:21:53Bud Foster actually ironically JC price reached out to him
- 1:21:56after a recommendation from both Foster and it was a marriage
- 1:21:59made in heaven and he was happy but he told me about her.
- 1:22:04How he was going to stay at even though he was behind those guys
- 1:22:08I mean in Edmonds is a stud you see what he's doing for the
- 1:22:11Buffalo Bills but he wasn't talking about transferring.
- 1:22:16I mean, I just think, you know, at the end of the day, you know,
- 1:22:21they are legit reasons. And I say all this, who knows
- 1:22:23what my son may happen when he may get somewhere and have to
- 1:22:26transfer. And I think the transfer portal
- 1:22:28has been good to Virginia, Tech people Overlook that sometimes
- 1:22:32because we look at who we lose but looking for We've gotten
- 1:22:36Khalil her. Bernie other guys back the same
- 1:22:39time. I stand by what I tweet.
- 1:22:41I think some of these guys are premature and their decisions,
- 1:22:44their emotional, I tell kids all the time when I'm entering found
- 1:22:48to them, be careful getting directions on your journey from
- 1:22:52people who've never left their home.
- 1:22:54You know, you got to be careful getting advice from people who
- 1:22:59have to two credits at Strayer who trying to tell you what
- 1:23:02Universe you should go play ball lat.
- 1:23:04Yeah. Heh Be careful.
- 1:23:05Yeah be careful because these guys don't know they haven't
- 1:23:08been on the depth chart and injuries happen, you know?
- 1:23:12And I just think sometimes it's okay.
- 1:23:14Like my son was on Varsity this year, he played and maybe seven
- 1:23:18games but he was you know, behind Juniors and seniors and
- 1:23:22he was a true. He true, he was a freshman on
- 1:23:24the varsity and I said, man just stay ready to keep working hard,
- 1:23:28you know, learn pay attention when you get in the game you
- 1:23:31know, be coachable and but you believe it or not?
- 1:23:34Today's world we live in is some freshmen.
- 1:23:36Who would like man? I'm not going to stay here next
- 1:23:39year. I need to be starting now going
- 1:23:41to transfer to this school, to go to this private school
- 1:23:43because it's coach saw my mixtape and I got it and and,
- 1:23:47and that's what's happening. I'm just, I'm just over it man.
- 1:23:51Like when I stole that tweet, not what I tweeted but the tweet
- 1:23:55I retweeted. I stole that from a Divan
- 1:23:58Morgan. Yeah, and I was like this number
- 1:24:02is ridiculous. I mean there.
- 1:24:04Kids just sitting there, you know, and I get it.
- 1:24:08We lost the kid, Virginia Tech and the transfer portal.
- 1:24:13The receiver out of Lafayette, not Hazleton.
- 1:24:18He was the Partridge with Hezekiah.
- 1:24:21Yeah. Now he's a he's a player that I
- 1:24:25thought should have because I used to tweak, can we get him
- 1:24:28some balls but then again, Trey Turner in Hazelton and Robinson
- 1:24:36today. But David Robinson was just just
- 1:24:40phenomenal Trio receivers, how you going to get on the field
- 1:24:43with them, you know. So it works both ways.
- 1:24:47Um, and I just, you know, but I do know some of these guys, you
- 1:24:50know, they get on here with these subtweet.
- 1:24:53So these Cryptid Twigs, you know, time to explore my options
- 1:24:57or, you know, it's been good Blacksburg.
- 1:25:00Yeah, Brett. Just stop it, you know, come on,
- 1:25:03you know, I'm saying, you know, just Just make a decision and
- 1:25:07and and fight through some adversity.
- 1:25:10Yes, I think some absolute. I know it was like this for me,
- 1:25:13even even playing D3. Like going from being your big
- 1:25:17man on campus in high school to Blake, everybody being good is
- 1:25:21kind of a shock to the system and you gotta you gotta work
- 1:25:24through a whole lot and you're not going to necessarily climb
- 1:25:27you know to the 2D just because you know you were good back in
- 1:25:31high school. So you gotta you had a fight
- 1:25:33through that and when you Get on the field.
- 1:25:35You got to make sure you make most of that opportunity and not
- 1:25:38not worry about what my snap count was only 10 in this game
- 1:25:41or whatever it is make the most of those opportunities.
- 1:25:44Yeah, absolutely man. And and I'm not that old head on
- 1:25:48your show right now. Who is like, oh man, these guys
- 1:25:52are so soft. And we didn't have that many
- 1:25:55uniform combos. Like I said earlier, man, I want
- 1:25:59all these guys to be successful. I want X to be relevant.
- 1:26:02I wanted to be winning, and I want, you know, Even with
- 1:26:05hinging hooker, man, I don't really care for Tennessee
- 1:26:08football, but I want him to sign it Tennessee, but they seem like
- 1:26:13they're going through their own since they in my last point on
- 1:26:22that man. And I'm not gonna be long on
- 1:26:23this point, but I don't know. I don't know these young guys
- 1:26:29and I said it's because I did know this, I don't know if they
- 1:26:32realize, man, you're going to many, many of them will go and
- 1:26:36get a shot and many of them. Some of them, not many will get
- 1:26:39a chance to stay or have a career like, Nick Source in
- 1:26:43who's now coaching and league. But he was a special teams
- 1:26:46captain and played at Seattle and got some reps and had a good
- 1:26:50career as a contributor and that's fine.
- 1:26:54Like, but did you get a degree in you come back or you cold
- 1:26:57sore? Start a family.
- 1:26:58But I don't know if all these guys realize that it's not just
- 1:27:02about the football, like I get it because I knew like, people
- 1:27:07don't realize I had a shot and I got a call and, you know, I went
- 1:27:12to the Ravens minicamp and the Patriots called might go forth
- 1:27:16for my tape and I mean, but they took Damien Woody and why
- 1:27:19wouldn't he was great and he did great and New England.
- 1:27:22He was great at BC he played at Patrick Henry Ashland, but I did
- 1:27:26it today. A man, like, I got two degrees
- 1:27:29met my wife and I was all-conference and and played in
- 1:27:33bowl games and had my name called not for hold him before
- 1:27:36great blocks. So, you know, at the end of the
- 1:27:39day, man like you're bigger than that, you know, be a bigger than
- 1:27:43something than just football and I think sometimes with the
- 1:27:48combination of social media, the manufacturer height we have
- 1:27:51right now, the misinformation these kids get, I think
- 1:27:54sometimes they lose himself with all this and they actually put
- 1:27:57more pressure. Pressure on themselves.
- 1:27:58They realize Yeah, I can totally concur with you because I didn't
- 1:28:06play any Collegiate Sports. I was in a fraternity but I made
- 1:28:10some of my best friends. I met my wife at school me and
- 1:28:15Brian had known each other since middle school, we're still
- 1:28:18hanging out 23 later. It's a lot more than just that.
- 1:28:22So I like that point, I am here to ask you a question because
- 1:28:25you've mentioned some games here and there, what was your
- 1:28:28favorite game that you played in IT Tech?
- 1:28:31What is Nick game sticks and says, that's the one cool man.
- 1:28:39You know what? Oh my God.
- 1:28:41That is a tough question. That is a very tough question
- 1:28:45about this. How about 30?
- 1:28:47She top three. Maybe that can help the Well, I
- 1:28:56wish you a text me that before. So I could because Dad stuff
- 1:28:59because I'll probably when we done recording this I'll
- 1:29:01probably say oh I had this one. Okay.
- 1:29:09I think I heard you mentioned before the first time, tech one
- 1:29:12in the Orange Bowl. You are part of that team right?
- 1:29:14Huh. Yeah that was special.
- 1:29:16I didn't play that much but it's funny.
- 1:29:20That was going to be my number one was the His bowl win.
- 1:29:25There's the second one we had that we won there for the first
- 1:29:28time in 96. We came back in 98.
- 1:29:30We were 3 and 0 - 3 you know yeah that's definitely him a one
- 1:29:34and it was a hurricane. Ironically the Miami Hurricanes,
- 1:29:37a hurricane on the horizon, coming up the coast and we had
- 1:29:41to get that game. And it was a prime-time game at
- 1:29:448:00 p.m. and the only other primetime game and for you 90s
- 1:29:49early 2000s, heads, you realize this was a big rivalry to time.
- 1:29:53Tennessee, with Peyton Manning was playing and I believe Peyton
- 1:29:57Manning was gone. It was Tee Martin and Florida
- 1:30:00led by Steve Spurrier. They were the Primetime other
- 1:30:02game. So man being Tech, both ranked
- 1:30:05on and my Tennessee and Florida was in the other channel and we
- 1:30:10beat Miami and over time when they had gosh Talent, Ray Lewis
- 1:30:16not Ray Lewis, he was already going.
- 1:30:17That was you have a few years before.
- 1:30:18But they had a Damian Lewis. Edgerrin, James Clinton Portis
- 1:30:23was a Act of Ed Reed was the starter Santana Moss Reggie.
- 1:30:27When we got down 2:47, you know, Luke was on the sidelines girls.
- 1:30:32Twerking in the stands sold out. That came out in the Smoke
- 1:30:36ma'am. He's talking Cash.
- 1:30:38Money trash, they had damn Morgan.
- 1:30:42My gosh, so many household names, man and speed all on the
- 1:30:46field. It was so humid, but it was a
- 1:30:50great win. I mean, we want to know what
- 1:30:52time Corey morning goldberger called Bradley Nate Williams.
- 1:30:57Chris, Cyrus Chad, Beasley David Pew, the baby death row because
- 1:31:02that follow me in 99, they did with 95.
- 1:31:04Did they were also great. But that game was great beat
- 1:31:08Miami and then running to that Sidelines.
- 1:31:10Saying that's four in a row. Y'all can't beat us and their
- 1:31:13coaches, like, get out of here, get out of here, you know, and
- 1:31:16they were hot, you know? And that was the old Orange
- 1:31:18Bowl. There was a mistake there and
- 1:31:20technique you can see us. It was Is it because, you know,
- 1:31:24you beat him in 95, you beat him with 96, you beat him in 97 and
- 1:31:2897. They said they were rebuilding
- 1:31:31and we beat him in 98. That's four in a row and you can
- 1:31:35see that Butch Davis was building something special with
- 1:31:39them, but Tech was not ready to give it up.
- 1:31:42And we were the premier program. That was really special, really,
- 1:31:46really special, probably number one.
- 1:31:49So that would be the favorite game.
- 1:31:51I would throw in Alabama. My That game ever as a hokie, we
- 1:31:56had heartache that year but the heartache set up the great
- 1:31:59season that was 99. But 98 we lost the temple who
- 1:32:03had lost 35 935 conference games in a row Temple.
- 1:32:07For all you old, his listing was the worst program every year in
- 1:32:11college football. We were ranked.
- 1:32:13What change? We would like a 20-something
- 1:32:15Point favorite. We were up 17.
- 1:32:17Nothing. They came back and won in Lane
- 1:32:19Stadium on homecoming. 2824. That's saying you we lost the
- 1:32:26Syracuse in the Orange Bowl. We win the game.
- 1:32:27We go to the BCS bowl and play Florida Gators in the Orange
- 1:32:31Bowl. We let that game, 21, 22, and we
- 1:32:35lost to make Nano on a last second touchdown.
- 1:32:38That was that same year and then we also lost to UVA losing 20,
- 1:32:42not winning 6:31 and it came back and avenge their comeback
- 1:32:48lost to us from 95. Aaron Brooks to pass to my
- 1:32:51longtime friend of mine Hawkins. So not we rating three we're
- 1:32:57ranked but we should be undefeated, it's my senior year
- 1:33:01and we're ranked and we playing Alabama and they are talking
- 1:33:04trash the entire week at audible activities and festive.
- 1:33:08This is the SEC. They had a cornerback named
- 1:33:11Fernando Brian who was an All-American and All-American
- 1:33:14running back and I had, who's that I'm Alexander was the
- 1:33:20running back. Number 11, yes.
- 1:33:23Alexander and it was the and they also had the All-American
- 1:33:26offers alignment off the tackle, Chris Samuels, and I really like
- 1:33:29hanging out at a joint team function, he was telling coin
- 1:33:33Engelberg, had never given up a sack even in practice and I was
- 1:33:37like, who is this? Dude, you know, we smoked
- 1:33:43Alabama, gave them their worst Bowl loss, ever in the inaugural
- 1:33:46Music City Bowl in the middle of a Northeastern in Nashville,
- 1:33:50Tennessee, in dolly world. We gave We got that dub on them
- 1:33:54and they were sick to their stomach, and the entire night.
- 1:33:58And then, even the next day, all you heard was rolltech because,
- 1:34:02you know, they say Roll Tide and Hokie Nation to, so that was
- 1:34:07great. And, you know, I get even
- 1:34:09emotional interior. Telling you guys that right now,
- 1:34:12because, you know, those losses still haunt me, you know, as a
- 1:34:17senior as a player those three losses to UVA Syracuse and
- 1:34:21Temple but at least It's my last game, you know, was over
- 1:34:25Alabama, first time we ever beat him and it was a legendary win
- 1:34:29and I set up the momentum for the 99 season, which they
- 1:34:32probably should have won that year in the national
- 1:34:34championship game. But they played for one and then
- 1:34:38just to throw in good measures, you know, as far as, you know,
- 1:34:41three, I would probably say There's a lot more but I right
- 1:34:46now I would probably say this Syracuse game that saying he,
- 1:34:52I'm not the same year my junior year because the Syracuse game
- 1:34:58was great, because we beat them, 31, 27, ever forget mcnab's,
- 1:35:02quote after the game. It was on my birthday.
- 1:35:04So we went on my birthday but McNabb said to the media, the
- 1:35:08press in his post game, press sir, we could have won if we
- 1:35:11wanted to and Mike who backed up McNabb always say that because
- 1:35:21of that, quote, I never understood that quote, but
- 1:35:23that's the days where we couldn't win up there at the
- 1:35:26Dome, and they couldn't win in Lane stadium, and nothing better
- 1:35:30than, you know, when, you know, your birthday and then going
- 1:35:32downtown to our nose and Big Al's and getting drinks.
- 1:35:36And it's your birthday and you won, and you got the Virginia
- 1:35:40Tech sweat suit on and everybody's showing you love and
- 1:35:45His great man. It is a great, great feeling.
- 1:35:47I love when it but Tech, man. I got more great wins, you know,
- 1:35:51I would throw another wins where I was, you know, a backup or
- 1:35:54played, some the Sugar Bowl 95 but those are the three I gave
- 1:35:58you right there. Especially at Miami when was
- 1:36:01great to Clemson win and 98 was good going down and Clemson is
- 1:36:04checking them out 37 nothing but I don't really love that game.
- 1:36:09It was so hot in South Carolina for twelve o'clock kickoff.
- 1:36:12I felt like a sun was behind this event.
- 1:36:16It was that game was played at a party with a movie until 3:00,
- 1:36:21because you now we have the code red Code.
- 1:36:23Orange heat advisories. And you know, it's a different
- 1:36:26time. So, you know, no, such thing is
- 1:36:31red and orange heat advisory in the 1990s and just, I think
- 1:36:35about looking back, man. Could love.
- 1:36:37I remember when people were dying in 98 people, 96 people,
- 1:36:42Corey Stewart passed away for the Vikings Rush.
- 1:36:45Lost the player people were passing out in the Heat and
- 1:36:48beans is like you got to fight through it.
- 1:36:52That was it, that was his response and I was like, I just
- 1:36:55knew we're going to get Practice cancelled but again, different
- 1:36:58time, different era. But you guys got me emotional
- 1:37:02now, think about those great wins.
- 1:37:04Those were some great great times man and that's the beauty
- 1:37:08of being on the team like a great team like that.
- 1:37:12Love to hear that love you that I want to ask.
- 1:37:15Personal question that you might only have.
- 1:37:18One that comes to mind. Was there a guy that whether you
- 1:37:21practice against the more you play the game against them?
- 1:37:23Like when you saw his number across the ball?
- 1:37:26You just said you said, man, it's gonna be a long day.
- 1:37:28Mmm, law that happened in practice.
- 1:37:32Yeah I remember man you gotta remember something man.
- 1:37:36I went against jimbaran Hank Coleman Cornell Brown JC price,
- 1:37:40Corey Moore Johnny will Burger Carl Bradley Martin Luther.
- 1:37:46Listen you can That right there and then but I will.
- 1:37:51But just to give some perspective, I want again, some
- 1:37:57West Virginia and back in the late 90s when I play, they were
- 1:38:00built like us. And they had, they had some
- 1:38:04studs, they had some great defensive lineman, the names
- 1:38:08Escape me now. Sometimes my memory does this
- 1:38:10not for, like, in mind. Okay.
- 1:38:12But I don't have CT anything but it's just you getting old, but
- 1:38:18They had Gary Steals and they had a guy named Thornton at West
- 1:38:21Virginia, and they were animals. Gary Stills, and Thornton
- 1:38:24Thornton was a defensive tackle. He actually just broadcasting
- 1:38:27for the Big East Network. I don't know if they even still
- 1:38:30do that now. But he was an animal in West
- 1:38:34Virginia where they were so physical, like it was like a
- 1:38:37chisel full quarters of battle, then of course you want to throw
- 1:38:43in Chris Hogan at Boston College.
- 1:38:46He was tough. I said, man.
- 1:38:51Dwight Freeney. No, thank God.
- 1:38:54I thank God my longtime team. I mean my longtime brother might
- 1:39:01email Anthony Lambo had that distinct honor given up the six
- 1:39:06sacks that year my at the Orange Bowl, Dwight Freeney was an
- 1:39:09animal. I will say this, it's the
- 1:39:13toughest deal on other than Virginia Tech.
- 1:39:15I mean, I say because I'm the few players that toughest d-line
- 1:39:18And I went against their Rivals Virginia Tech, but you protect
- 1:39:23still has the advantage who, you know, you heard who I name, but
- 1:39:26was the 97 care, the 97 UNC team in the Gator Bowl led by Mack
- 1:39:32Brown. They beat the beep out of.
- 1:39:35I mean, they just, they should have been in that bowl game.
- 1:39:38We were banged up. We were seven and four finished
- 1:39:40second in the Big East, 5 and 2 in conference play.
- 1:39:44But our best players were in the stands or done.
- 1:39:46Al Clark, didn't finish the game Knicks.
- 1:39:48Orson got MVP at a bowl game for us and he was an emergency
- 1:39:53quarterback for us now, Clark Was Heard, Dave Myers Was Heard
- 1:39:58chiron's didn't play. Ricky Hall, didn't play.
- 1:40:00And Andre Davis didn't play, but they had every needs a cube on
- 1:40:05Vani holiday, my Greg Ellis, and I remember I got called for
- 1:40:11holding that game late in the game.
- 1:40:15And I remember, just like, just there's a picture of me.
- 1:40:18Me I'll post it. You know, it's probably miss
- 1:40:20throwback but I'll post it again back when I had hair and they
- 1:40:23had to ruin, no times caught me on the bench.
- 1:40:25Will look we're already lost the game 42 3 but it's still time
- 1:40:30and I got my head facepalm, I'm leaning over just you know my
- 1:40:34Lima gloves on rubbing my face. You know it's 3:45 in
- 1:40:39Jacksonville Florida p.m. and it's overcast and I'm just
- 1:40:43thinking about I can't wait to get back to Blacksburg or
- 1:40:46Roanoke or whatever. And then the quote underneath me
- 1:40:50looking like I just competed in a Hunger Game, there will be
- 1:40:54played him 60 times. He would lose all 60.
- 1:40:57So it looks like I said that mess but I was they have my
- 1:41:02picture but he says it Carolina Carolina had draped down that
- 1:41:07team karolina should not, they Carolina couldn't be Florida
- 1:41:10state that year and they were I'm forgetting guys.
- 1:41:14They have that team. I mentioned Ray blah but they
- 1:41:16were, we were seven and four. They were ten in one, and their
- 1:41:20only loss was to Florida State that's when Florida state had
- 1:41:23coals and Bobby Bowden and Peter, Warrick and floor
- 1:41:29statements, the BCS bowl that year and, you know, the way the
- 1:41:31bullet liner was back in North Carolina wants to the Gator
- 1:41:34Bowl, that's how I was. And we were overmatched, but I
- 1:41:38will say this funny story, I'm giving you some scoop beaver in
- 1:41:42the locker room. The guy.
- 1:41:43L forget man. We just wanted to go home.
- 1:41:45We were done, we would defeat. It morale was just low because
- 1:41:48we just got in stomped on NBC and the Gator Bowl and Beamer
- 1:41:54came in. Grabbed the stool from
- 1:41:56somebody's locking he's, I want everyone to hear me and hear me
- 1:41:59now I'm paraphrasing but he said, everyone has been put on
- 1:42:03notice everybody's position including coaches.
- 1:42:06Everybody is on. Notice if you don't come back
- 1:42:08ready to play and ready to compete, you won't be here.
- 1:42:11Oh, yeah. Is 1997 97 after.
- 1:42:17So in 98, we knew man, you know, in Gentry, I mean, you know, the
- 1:42:20offseason was tough, you know. And, you know, and they were
- 1:42:24some guys ironically, that transferred be my point.
- 1:42:29You see a theme here. So again, everyone's not built
- 1:42:33like that. There was some guys are
- 1:42:34transferred, not because they wanted more playing time, they
- 1:42:37weren't built for it. It is what it is.
- 1:42:40But yeah, man don't Those defenses.
- 1:42:44But you know what's funny though?
- 1:42:45Man is when you go against Corey Moore and Cornell Brown and JC
- 1:42:51price, and Waverly Jackson, and jimbaran and Lawrence, Lewis and
- 1:42:56Hank, Coleman and called Bradley and Nate Williams and Chad
- 1:43:01Beasley and David few when you get in the game is on Saturday
- 1:43:05or Thursday night, you're not worried man.
- 1:43:08I just hope one time that people say when did you know you were
- 1:43:12going to read? Sure, you know you were high
- 1:43:14profile play out of Hampton High.
- 1:43:16I said, when I had to line up in front of Cornell Brown, I called
- 1:43:22my dad and my mom later on that night.
- 1:43:24Say yeah, I'm going to take this red shirt, you can we don't
- 1:43:26mention it this year, I'm going grabs, the rum gone go and put
- 1:43:32this red shirt on That's all good.
- 1:43:39I was only a year behind them. Cornell.
- 1:43:42I mean, Cornell, a lot of people say he flipped the in-state
- 1:43:46recruiting for Frank. Let me ask this in and I love
- 1:43:50kind of phrases to, right way because in when we were coming
- 1:43:54up Miami and UVA the rivalry games, when those games were
- 1:43:57played, it was a big deal. It was, I mean, when you got
- 1:44:02there 94 to roughly probably 06-07, it was games were Wars
- 1:44:07and me and Brian been talking. Like, do you feel that way Other
- 1:44:11Miami or UVA or maybe a semblance of both like those
- 1:44:14rivalry games, get back to where they were 20 years ago, where he
- 1:44:20like you mentioned the Miami game.
- 1:44:21When it's a night game, both teams are in the top 10 or to
- 1:44:25Commonwealth Cup game. When you know like 95 when that
- 1:44:31happened when you know, both teams have 10 wins and both
- 1:44:36teams are trying to get you to Sugar Bowl and both teams ranked
- 1:44:39in the top 15. What do you Is more important
- 1:44:42that helps Elevate packed programme.
- 1:44:44Is it both? Or do you have a preference?
- 1:44:47Well, let me just add this real quick.
- 1:44:50You forgot to mention West Virginia because West Virginia
- 1:44:53was also up at net and you can make an argument as that you can
- 1:44:57make the argument to West Virginia, Virginia Tech robbery
- 1:45:00during the 90s and the early 2000s before Tech jump to the
- 1:45:03ACC and 04, probably better games and more important than
- 1:45:07the Virginia Tech UVA robbery but during my era, Era to your
- 1:45:12point, the UVA Virginia Tech robbery was epic and the Miami
- 1:45:16robbery with tech for years was epic.
- 1:45:19It was it was Bloodshed, it was, you know, Braveheart near the
- 1:45:22end of the movie. It was real and it is my
- 1:45:27preference. I would like oh this is going to
- 1:45:31make some people mad. I like it when taking you via
- 1:45:35both good because I grew up in that and it's good for the kids,
- 1:45:39great for the Commonwealth. People look at me funny on
- 1:45:42camera. When I celebrate UVA not that
- 1:45:45they are celebrating wins but I'm like hey that's a good one.
- 1:45:48That's good for us. I mean it's it's just better,
- 1:45:53you know. Jonathan McLaughlin was like Hey
- 1:45:55everybody post your comment with, you know, drinking out the
- 1:45:58cup and I sell I lost my last two years you were here and he
- 1:46:02couldn't even fathom that and I said, hey man, they were really
- 1:46:06good. Y'all beat some UV.
- 1:46:07A team that couldn't be Centerville High School on the
- 1:46:09road, okay? So you don't calm down, joking
- 1:46:14me, you know, because my UVA battles, we were going against,
- 1:46:18you know, Dingo and Patrick Carney and Wally Rainer and the
- 1:46:22farrier brothers. And you know, some studs.
- 1:46:25Aaron Brooks, you know, UVA was ranked 15th, we ranked, 18th and
- 1:46:30vice versa. It wasn't what you see now.
- 1:46:34So if you have both programs Beamer said it best in George
- 1:46:39Wells, co-signed it is enough Talent.
- 1:46:41Stay for both teams, to get it and win, but both teams are not
- 1:46:45getting especially to be fair UVA.
- 1:46:48You know, UVA is the one that's falling short, the last 16 17
- 1:46:52years, not Tech and grow, and I know tech fans are going to
- 1:46:56smirk when I say this. I think grow got to out-of-state
- 1:47:00happy during his day. He got coach two years and he
- 1:47:02just kept going up to New York, New Jersey Pennsylvania because
- 1:47:06he was a New York Jet coach. He didn't really look Holly upon
- 1:47:09Virginia talent and I think That came back to bite them because
- 1:47:13Tech was full of Commonwealth guys.
- 1:47:15So I think you got to get guys in state.
- 1:47:17I think Miami and Tech will always have that rivalry because
- 1:47:21of what we did during my era, and it's funny too, because
- 1:47:26Miami has a lot of coaching Carousel within their program,
- 1:47:29and nobody lives off, mystique and manufacture height, and
- 1:47:33history lessons more than the Hurricanes of Miami between
- 1:47:37Michael Irvin and Warren Sapp. We get more history lessons
- 1:47:40about the You, but less productivity on the field.
- 1:47:43So it doesn't match up. It's more.
- 1:47:45So let me look at this 3430. So I can get what you're talking
- 1:47:47about because you guys are the king of underachieving, you
- 1:47:52know? So the reality is, as I mean, is
- 1:47:55constantly going to be a robbery or Tech because they're two
- 1:47:58Biggie's foes and they gave you great.
- 1:48:01I mean, if you, if you still have the ESPN classic channel to
- 1:48:06this day, I get, hey, you're on or even ESPNU, they always show
- 1:48:10tons of Tech UV. I mean, Miami rivalry games from
- 1:48:14the 90s a season. Yeah they do.
- 1:48:19Basic network was in those nannies, games act like in the
- 1:48:22summer last year. Yeah, and obviously, yeah, yeah.
- 1:48:28But the UVA one, you need UVA to get better or like to push Tech
- 1:48:34but at the same time it's a fine line.
- 1:48:37You don't want them to become better because it can hurt you.
- 1:48:39So it's kind of How you VA helped us get into the ACC, you
- 1:48:44know, you kind of want both programs there.
- 1:48:48So I'm a Virginian, you know, I I love the Richmond area.
- 1:48:53I love Southwest Virginia, I love Northern Virginia and I
- 1:48:56love obviously my home 757 and I like you know I mean look you
- 1:49:03guys fought. We follow each other on Twitter
- 1:49:05at the end of the day, look how great that you VA Virginia Tech.
- 1:49:10Basketball rivalry is Right now, and how it's been the last five
- 1:49:14years with buzz and Bennett. And now young and bidded who
- 1:49:19love and respect each other and look what they're doing for both
- 1:49:22programs and it's great, basketball and damn, right?
- 1:49:26It looks good. Seeing you be in Tech, the top
- 1:49:28of the ACC I like that. I want.
- 1:49:31What? Carolina-duke have?
- 1:49:32I'm tired of it. Why would, why can't we have
- 1:49:35that for the coastal? You know?
- 1:49:38I mean, yy-you can't be afraid of competition, you know?
- 1:49:43I mean, it's cool to brag about the streak and look at the
- 1:49:47little means and Mike, London, crying, what did Jordan face and
- 1:49:51I am. Okay.
- 1:49:52Yeah, it's fun. But you really you really are
- 1:49:55you really bragging. You know, when you have a
- 1:49:59Midfield altercation between 25 and 16s and microbrew has leader
- 1:50:04come back to Bucky Hodges, I was in the stadium.
- 1:50:07Of the great win. But I left after the, you know,
- 1:50:10the Smoke Clears and you happy you beat your rival for the
- 1:50:12whatever. Team time is 6 is 6.
- 1:50:15Yep. If I was seven.
- 1:50:17So what are you really happy about?
- 1:50:19It's embarrassing. It's not.
- 1:50:21So he should brag about because everyone outside of Virginia
- 1:50:24doesn't give a damn, you know, and that's what people need to
- 1:50:27remind himself of you want to be part of something bigger than
- 1:50:31just the conference game. You know I'm saying II?
- 1:50:35And I'm not I don't have Alabama, Clemson out.
- 1:50:37Alabama Auburn fatigue. I just I have I have fatigue
- 1:50:41when it comes to being irrelevant like, you know, when
- 1:50:44you wake up after a great win on Sunday morning and you're eating
- 1:50:48your breakfast and you you getting your fantasy lineup,
- 1:50:52shredding you like okay, okay, let me turn into these
- 1:50:54highlights, what they gonna say about this Tech UVA game on
- 1:50:57College, you know, game night. They just show the score, you
- 1:51:01know, buddy. Nobody cares.
- 1:51:02Yeah, nobody cares. They play the game.
- 1:51:04Here's the final score. Yeah, they're low and Other New
- 1:51:08Virginia Tech holds on be UVA. They'll go to the Bowl game that
- 1:51:12comes on Comcast, on December 1935, you know, I mean, what
- 1:51:17happens, you know, I don't, and I'm not mocking my program, I
- 1:51:20just think sometimes we need a reality, check, what we once had
- 1:51:24and what we need to get back to and Beyond and, you know, the
- 1:51:28answer your question again, I just think if it's my choice is
- 1:51:31Virginia Tech UVA. Although they what you want, but
- 1:51:36when you consistently beat Miami, Me like we've done and
- 1:51:38we've done it before the brand of Miami is still relevant when
- 1:51:42you beat Miami. Still turns heads.
- 1:51:44Yeah, you know like we did last was it last year?
- 1:51:49Oh yeah. When we ask that Duke de barco
- 1:51:53and and then came down on my Miami game and they beat him you
- 1:51:57know, or that year when she Corey Harris and Kirk Herbstreit
- 1:52:01declared that you as back and tie rod and Jared Boykins beat
- 1:52:05him, 31 27, you know, when the rain game Smackdown in the rain
- 1:52:08and Lain under that game follow but to you doing in my house,
- 1:52:13got a question but I'm going to make it to your point of the
- 1:52:16Miami game. We had just gotten curb-stomped
- 1:52:19by Duke. I was still the 330 ABC game
- 1:52:24that year we were or two and two just lost by 42 a bad dude team.
- 1:52:30But that game when the next game and I think you're right, and
- 1:52:34I'm with you, you won't, you VA Tech to be good but I think you
- 1:52:37agree. Right.
- 1:52:38Yeah, I'm right there with you. I think when UVA is good the
- 1:52:41program's push each other. Yes I think that's what kind of
- 1:52:45came out when when you were building the program at Virginia
- 1:52:48Tech in the 90s. And I feel like that is kind of
- 1:52:51what helped Propel Virginia Tech to what it became and what it
- 1:52:55was throughout the 2000s. And I feel like UVA being down
- 1:52:59and then some of the other things that have changed on the
- 1:53:02national recruiting front, you know, we just we're not where we
- 1:53:05were and I feel like getting some of that back getting Some
- 1:53:07of that competing for the same, you know, top 10 players in the
- 1:53:11state every year, not getting that back would be good.
- 1:53:16You know what I sold? Mike Vick on coming to Tech.
- 1:53:19I said, imagine if you go to Tech and Ronald Kray goes to UVA
- 1:53:22and arrival, you guys had in high school continues.
- 1:53:25Oh, and he loved loved. He loved that notion.
- 1:53:28Of course. We all know, Ronald went to UNC
- 1:53:30because of their basketball and football program.
- 1:53:33Yep. Like a Mic Mac on in Dean Smith
- 1:53:35left but you know what, also, to you A point UVA ultimately
- 1:53:41indirectly because of their inconsistency with grow in
- 1:53:45London and the streak and them started losing it Duke.
- 1:53:49You know, when Duke was still inferior before, you know, they
- 1:53:51really got, you know, pretty good program.
- 1:53:54It resulted in Virginia Tech becoming complacent.
- 1:53:58Because you your instinct robbery is almost a guaranteed
- 1:54:02win and you're still losing recruits, but you lose them to
- 1:54:06Ohio State but you're getting pretty much you still getting
- 1:54:10David Wilson, Logan, Thomas and Tyrod Taylor, so you're okay.
- 1:54:15And then, you know, it didn't really push you, it didn't?
- 1:54:19Because because again, Beamer had to get guys like myself, and
- 1:54:23kid knocks, and gone, and Toni Morrison.
- 1:54:25And all those guys that come in, Because you VA had George Wells
- 1:54:30and it was, my UVA was winning eleven games.
- 1:54:32Only have one ten win season in the history of their program but
- 1:54:36at the end of the day they were winning in the ACC and they held
- 1:54:39it over Jean takes here because the Big East was always looked
- 1:54:42upon as a very good conference but it wasn't named CeCe with
- 1:54:45their tradition, their passage free, so they had to leg up.
- 1:54:48So Virginia Tech have to work twice as hard to become relevant
- 1:54:52and be respected. So I stand by what I say.
- 1:54:55It goes hand-in-hand man. You gotta you.
- 1:54:57You got to push each other hits the you know we need you to be
- 1:55:02great like you know you know Skywalker Invader you gotta have
- 1:55:08that enemy. You got to have the Yankees and
- 1:55:10Red Sox. Get over here like matters.
- 1:55:13Yeah you got some you got to have that, you know.
- 1:55:16Yeah. You know.
- 1:55:18So we're going to close out with one last question.
- 1:55:20This one kind of be a fun one. So everybody was hype on the
- 1:55:25Twitter timeline. I'm sure you saw it.
- 1:55:28Double a football game coming back.
- 1:55:29Probably next couple years. What is something that hasn't
- 1:55:35been in that game? If you played it recently that
- 1:55:38they need to put back in that game, be put in the game now
- 1:55:40whether it's like changes to recruiting or the transfer
- 1:55:44portal or whatever it may be, either, they have like with 2K
- 1:55:48has that my career. I don't know if they have it but
- 1:55:52like, you know, if you play 2K, you do you go to practice?
- 1:55:56You sign a contract, you Atta, girl, you got shoes, it gives it
- 1:56:00some personality, you know, you can always create a player, but
- 1:56:04like the Recruitment and different things like that or or
- 1:56:09and or if I couldn't have that I would actually this gets kind of
- 1:56:13kind of, you know, Funk funky because you know, it gets into
- 1:56:16amateurism but like I would have like, you know, legendary high
- 1:56:21school programs, like my high school and there maybe Oscar
- 1:56:24Smith like or like high schools you know where you know You had
- 1:56:28a, you know, high school teams that you have been it, where you
- 1:56:33play, and then you recruit off that or, you know, the legendary
- 1:56:38teams the classics. I know.
- 1:56:40One thing I used to love that game.
- 1:56:43Gosh, I'll probably almost filled out one semester messing
- 1:56:46around with that game. But I love that game because I
- 1:56:53remember when I got older, and I was in my 20s, I was living up
- 1:56:56here in Northern Virginia, man, and they Had the classic teams
- 1:57:00the 98 Tech Team when 99 team, and I like that as well.
- 1:57:04So I hope they keep that but I know I don't really give you a
- 1:57:07concrete answer because I'm actually thinking as I answer it
- 1:57:10because I'm sure after we wrap up, I'm probably going to tweet
- 1:57:14something at least you had this, you know, but it's great to his
- 1:57:19back that game masking guys, almost fight over their game
- 1:57:23and, you know, just we used to I, you know, I love that game.
- 1:57:28Oh, no, love man. And I am bolo, Man 2.
- 1:57:31Yeah, but I'm playing especially like when I was younger.
- 1:57:34I was Lee had been around less would like seven or eight years
- 1:57:38but like, I always played a whole lot more NCAA that I
- 1:57:42played men, I played Madden. If I wanted to play like with a
- 1:57:44friend, if I was just, you know, picking it up for myself.
- 1:57:47I always picked up NCAA. We live in Collegiate sweets,
- 1:57:50man. And Shane bhima gets pissed when
- 1:57:52I told that story, but I used to bust his ass and I used to go
- 1:57:56upstairs. He lived above me, huh?
- 1:57:57Him, Chris, Cyrus, Ken handy, and Tim snacker, and I lived on
- 1:58:03the bottom apartment complex. Same complex, bottom, first
- 1:58:06floor. And I love Shane's.
- 1:58:08My brother and I'm so happy for him.
- 1:58:10I really am. Derek Smith was my roommate,
- 1:58:14Damon watlington, who was a basketball player was also, one
- 1:58:17of my roommates and we had the four bedroom and I used to go
- 1:58:20upstairs and me and Shane used to have some battles.
- 1:58:24And Shane is very competitive, like, me.
- 1:58:27And one time, they The control and he was like, get out.
- 1:58:38Yeah, man. You know, I just, you know,
- 1:58:39that's when that back when I had a friend called free time, but I
- 1:58:42ain't seen free time in years, man.
- 1:58:44So but no it was great times man, but I don't really have a
- 1:58:50concrete answer for you, man, cuz that game is just wonderful.
- 1:58:54I mean, you could, there's probably gonna be some surprises
- 1:58:57even in this revolution, in within the game because it was
- 1:59:00so popular. And there's so much has changed
- 1:59:03since then went away. So it probably would have the
- 1:59:06transfer portal in it and all the, I don't know.
- 1:59:10Funny, I brought that up, but yeah, it'll be cool to see what
- 1:59:13surprise they have. I do like the classic teams if
- 1:59:17anything. If I could pick one.
- 1:59:19Maybe just to kind of Full Circle.
- 1:59:22I would probably reintroduce those classic teams because
- 1:59:25that's the Nostalgia about college football, everything's
- 1:59:28gets better as the years go by. So like, Remember the u.s. 18
- 1:59:34USC? USC teams, Reggie Bush, you
- 1:59:36know, their folklore and abilities become better or the
- 1:59:4099 Tech Team, you know, now, instead, Michael Vick, you know,
- 1:59:43he actually he threw a touchdown pass with his arm, tied behind
- 1:59:47his back in the end zone. You know, it's just rumors and
- 1:59:52the exaggeration gets bigger and they become more iconic.
- 1:59:56And I think that's why that game was so popular and you had fans
- 2:00:00and their music. Okay, and it's funny too because
- 2:00:04we would be like yo, I'm using this team using tenancy lot
- 2:00:08somebody. You know, I'm running the option
- 2:00:09with Team Art. I mean, it was crazy because
- 2:00:11that was my team. It was Tennessee, was so weird.
- 2:00:13I don't even know why I picked them.
- 2:00:15I never played with tech that much man, and we used to get
- 2:00:18mad. It's funny.
- 2:00:19Bringing some. Now you got me going.
- 2:00:20I got to shut up, but we used to get mad because the first thing
- 2:00:25you do like the NFL guys, you would go in and see what they
- 2:00:27got me rated. I'll be like oh let me see what
- 2:00:29I'm saying. What they got me rated.
- 2:00:31I was like I-79 this is bull, you know, you know you know we
- 2:00:37would just go crazy just what we were rated, you know, like who
- 2:00:41they watching who had us, you know.
- 2:00:43But it was really cool because I'm old enough to tell you about
- 2:00:46Sega. And when it used to be done it
- 2:00:49wasn't even. You could even use a team.
- 2:00:51They just caught like they had Sega when the in-situ a first
- 2:00:55came out, they had they had the name, only had a select amount
- 2:00:59of teams and it was Talan. I see it was, it was the name of
- 2:01:03the city that college town they were in and Virginia Tech was in
- 2:01:08on it. This was the early 90s.
- 2:01:10We were like, okay, we gotta win and then they came out and they
- 2:01:13had or more teams. And I remember seeing that
- 2:01:16Virginia Tech on that screen, it was so cool being part of that,
- 2:01:21you know, but That's really cool man that nostalgic.
- 2:01:25But a lot of fun tonight man I appreciate you guys for having
- 2:01:27me on this has been great Dwight.
- 2:01:30This has been an absolute pleasure man and we hope to have
- 2:01:34you back in the near future to talk more because I feel like
- 2:01:37between just what we've talked about here tonight, we have
- 2:01:40barely scratched the surface of content to talked with you about
- 2:01:45again, we thank you for taking your time this evening because
