- 0:00You've probably heard the quote. In a time of universal deceit,
- 0:05telling the truth is a revolutionary act.
- 0:08Everyone repeats it. Everyone that I've heard repeat
- 0:11it attributes it to George Orwell.
- 0:15And it's wrong. Orwell never said it, and that's
- 0:18exactly why I'm opening with it. Because even the warnings about
- 0:23deception are wrapped in deception.
- 0:26Even the quotes about truth get recycled without anyone checking
- 0:31whether they're true. But that's the world we live in
- 0:35now, a world where truth is optional and narrative is
- 0:40everything and the public is expected to swallow whatever
- 0:45they're fed without asking questions.
- 0:48And today we're going to talk about truth, or more accurately
- 0:52the systemic avoidance of truth in Australia, because the
- 0:57headlines right now, they're, they're not just stories,
- 1:03they're signals, they're distractions, they're pressure
- 1:05valves. And they tell you more about the
- 1:08state of this country than the politicians ever will.
- 1:22So let's start with this obvious one, the Ben Robert Smith
- 1:26headlines. He's Australia's most decorated
- 1:31soldier. Accusations of murder in
- 1:33Afghanistan. Years of media coverage.
- 1:36A defamation trial that played out like a Netflix series.
- 1:40Now, I'm not here to relitigate the case and I'm not here to
- 1:44declare his guilt or his innocence.
- 1:47That's not the point of this episode.
- 1:49The point is this. Why has the Australian
- 1:52government allowed one of the most sensitive, complex,
- 1:57national security adjacent stories in our history to unfold
- 2:02in the media like a public spectacle?
- 2:05Why has every detail been allowed to drip out?
- 2:09Why has the narrative been shaped in real time by
- 2:13journalists, commentators and leaks?
- 2:17Here's the uncomfortable truth. There is far more to this story
- 2:21than the public will ever know. And that's not because of
- 2:25conspiracy, but because of classification, geopolitics,
- 2:30military secrecy and political risk.
- 2:34Some truths are simply never going to be released.
- 2:38Not in 10 years, not in 50 years, not ever.
- 2:42And yet the public is fed a steady diet of headlines, as if
- 2:46the media circus is the full story.
- 2:49But it isn't, and it never will be.
- 2:53We have in this government and in previous government,
- 2:56selective transparency. And it's a government strategy.
- 3:01This is where the pattern becomes obvious.
- 3:04Some stories, they get full sunlight, others get buried.
- 3:09Some scandals have you noticed they're dissected in public.
- 3:13And yet others seem to disappear into committees, enquiries and
- 3:18oh, it's an ongoing review. Governments don't deal in truth,
- 3:22they deal in narrative management.
- 3:25If a story is useful, it gets airtime.
- 3:28If a story is dangerous, it gets delayed, reframed or quietly
- 3:34forgotten. And the public is left trying to
- 3:37assemble truth from fragments. Fragments that are chosen by
- 3:41people who benefit from controlling the narrative.
- 3:46And meanwhile, Australia is in serious trouble.
- 3:50While the media obsesses over personalities and scandals, the
- 3:54country is sliding toward a financial Cliff.
- 3:58Let's be blunt. Australia is drowning in debt.
- 4:02The cost of living is crushing families.
- 4:05Housing is unattainable for an entire generation.
- 4:09Immigration is increasing while infrastructure is collapsing.
- 4:14Energy security is fragile and fuel reserves are dangerously
- 4:19low, and every economic forecast quietly admits the same thing.
- 4:25We are not prepared for what's coming.
- 4:28But instead of confronting these issues, the government keeps
- 4:32kicking the can down the road. We borrow more, we spend more,
- 4:36we import more people. And we hope, they hope nobody
- 4:41notices the cracks forming beneath the surface.
- 4:45And when the cracks get too big to hide, they distract you with
- 4:49yet another headline, another scandal, another inquiry,
- 4:54another national conversation that leads nowhere.
- 5:00Then you've got the fuel and energy crisis that nobody wants
- 5:04to talk about. Australia has some of the lowest
- 5:07fuel reserves in the developed world.
- 5:09We rely on foreign supply chains for almost everything.
- 5:14Our energy grid is unstable, politicized and vulnerable.
- 5:20But what does the public hear? Everything is fine.
- 5:23Transition is going smoothly and there's no need to panic.
- 5:28Truth is not the priority, Managing perception is.
- 5:33Because if the public understood how fragile the system really
- 5:37is, the political class would have to take responsibility, and
- 5:41that's something they avoid at all costs.
- 5:45So let's look at this through a biblical lens.
- 5:50In the modern world, truth has fallen.
- 5:53Isaiah 59 verse 14 says truth has stumbled in the streets.
- 5:59Honesty cannot enter. That's not just ancient poetry,
- 6:03that's a diagnosis of modern Australia.
- 6:08And then there's Pilot's question in John 1838 where he
- 6:11says, what is truth? It's the same question we're
- 6:16asking today, not because truth doesn't exist, but because truth
- 6:21has become inconvenient. Truth exposes incompetence.
- 6:26Truth exposes corruption. Truth exposes mismanagement.
- 6:31Truth exposes the consequences of political cowardice.
- 6:36And that's why truth is avoided, because truth is now a threat.
- 6:43Here's the reality. When truth becomes dangerous,
- 6:47lies become normal. When truth becomes inconvenient,
- 6:51narratives become essential. When truth becomes unmanageable,
- 6:56governments turn to distraction. And in a time of universal
- 7:00deceit, simply asking honest questions becomes a
- 7:05revolutionary act. Australia doesn't need more
- 7:09spin. It doesn't need more
- 7:11distractions and it definitely doesn't need more political
- 7:15theatre. It needs truth, real truth, and
- 7:20the courage to face it. But until that happens, we're
- 7:25going to keep sliding down this slope.
- 7:29As always, this is just my opinion.
- 7:34I am Jay Fallon and thanks for listening to the Slippery Slope
- 7:38Podcast. They just feel.
