- 0:45SPEAKER_01: Hi there and welcome to another episode of Rise Up, Live Joy Your Way.
- 0:50SPEAKER_01: Whether it's morning, afternoon, or evening, I just want to take a moment to say thank you to you for taking time out of your day to spend here with me and listening to this podcast.
- 1:02SPEAKER_01: So today I want to kind of dive a little bit deeper into getting a hold of self-doubt.
- 1:09SPEAKER_01: I think a lot of us will go, you know, especially, I I think all of us actually, I don't really think that there's any one category where self-doubt doesn't creep in at some point.
- 1:21SPEAKER_01: Uh did you know that over 85% of people actually combat or deal with low self-esteem?
- 1:28SPEAKER_01: Um, truth be told, self-esteem, the belief in oneself, can really hold us back personally and professionally.
- 1:39SPEAKER_01: Um, in our personal lives, it can hold us back from engaging in relationships.
- 1:44SPEAKER_01: Uh, it can hold us back from just doing the things that we actually really want to do because we don't believe that we can.
- 1:51SPEAKER_01: Uh, in our professional lives, it can hold us back in those careers that we really want or to move forward in our career, move up in our career.
- 1:59SPEAKER_01: So this idea of self-doubt, this idea of self-the low self-esteem can actually hold you back.
- 2:06SPEAKER_01: Oftentimes you'll hear people refer to it as maybe imposter syndrome.
- 2:10SPEAKER_01: Um, because a lot of people will will think, well, I can't possibly do that.
- 2:15SPEAKER_01: I I don't have the capabilities to do that, or I'm faking it.
- 2:19SPEAKER_01: I've even worked with clients who are professionals.
- 2:21SPEAKER_01: They're there are successes, quote unquote successes in their field, and they still actually don't believe that they're really good at what they do.
- 2:28SPEAKER_01: It's that concept of self-doubt, it's that concept of imposter syndrome.
- 2:31SPEAKER_01: So, what are some things that we could do to help work through the hold that self-doubt can have on us?
- 2:39SPEAKER_01: The very first thing is, and I talk about this all the time, which is coming to this place of deep self-acceptance, recognizing that who you are, this being that you are, is exactly who you're meant to be.
- 2:52SPEAKER_01: Like, yes, of course, you can grow, you can expand, you can get stronger, better, all these things because we can, we're we're human, right?
- 2:59SPEAKER_01: We can continually evolve and grow, but it's also embracing the fact that you are human as a strength.
- 3:06SPEAKER_01: And what I mean by that is it's okay to not know all the things all the time.
- 3:12SPEAKER_01: It's okay to give yourself moments of uh uncertainty and saying, well, I guess I can learn this along the way, rather than then not accepting what you do or don't know and thinking that it's bad or wrong if you don't know all the things.
- 3:29SPEAKER_01: So making sure that you're coming to this place of saying, yes, I am human and I am showing up in the best capability that I can each and every day, and I'm making decisions based on the information I have at the time that I have it.
- 3:42SPEAKER_01: Another really important thing that we can hold on to when we are feeling those moments of self-doubt is, and it comes from the second pillar of Kristen Neff's um concept of self-compassion.
- 3:55SPEAKER_01: She well, she's a leading researcher on self-compassion, and the second pillar really is um common humanity.
- 4:01SPEAKER_01: So it's common humanity over isolation, it's recognizing that you're not alone.
- 4:06SPEAKER_01: Many, many people, many, many successful people, many, many um, you know, entrepreneurs, business owners, um, businessmen and women, professionals, doctors, lawyers, it doesn't matter, just people in general have doubts.
- 4:22SPEAKER_01: You know, often lots of people will question themselves.
- 4:25SPEAKER_01: And so just recognizing that you're not alone in it and that you can talk about it would be really helpful in terms of helping to move through those moments of self-doubt or those moments of imposter syndrome that you might be going through.
- 4:41SPEAKER_01: Another really important factor that we can look at is just asking what's true.
- 4:44SPEAKER_01: Get the facts.
- 4:46SPEAKER_01: You know, your doubts might not necessarily be the truth.
- 4:49SPEAKER_01: So oftentimes our self-doubts are coming from fears.
- 4:53SPEAKER_01: So naming, what am I really afraid of?
- 4:55SPEAKER_01: And how do I scare myself?
- 4:57SPEAKER_01: And then asking, is that really true?
- 5:00SPEAKER_01: Is that really a true fear that I need to have?
- 5:02SPEAKER_01: Or is that really true, the thing that I'm doubting myself about?
- 5:06SPEAKER_01: Because sometimes just naming that and recognizing that that's not actually true will help us release that self-doubt.
- 5:14SPEAKER_01: Something that's also really important when you are feeling self-doubt is pay attention to your strengths.
- 5:19SPEAKER_01: You know, acknowledge those strengths that you have.
- 5:22SPEAKER_01: Acknowledge the qualities that you bring to the table, the values that you have, your personal strengths.
- 5:28SPEAKER_01: Write down those skills, write down accomplishments that you've had, not because you're going to define yourself by your accomplishments, but sometimes we have to pay attention to what we have achieved or what we have accomplished and celebrate those just to remind ourselves that we can do hard things.
- 5:46SPEAKER_01: We are relational beings as as humans, right?
- 5:49SPEAKER_01: Like part of being human is being a relational being.
- 5:52SPEAKER_01: So making sure that you're surrounding yourself by people who really support you and that you feel you can have that emotional safety with.
- 6:00SPEAKER_01: I talked about emotional safety in a previous episode.
- 6:02SPEAKER_01: So if you didn't listen to that one, you might want to just hop onto that podcast.
- 6:06SPEAKER_01: But negative people can really bring you down.
- 6:08SPEAKER_01: Negative people, people who are very critical of you, can bring you down and also contribute to your self-doubt.
- 6:14SPEAKER_01: So paying attention and making sure that you're giving yourself permission to discern who you want to spend your time with.
- 6:20SPEAKER_01: That's your choice.
- 6:22SPEAKER_01: And you can own it and you can just make sure that if you are consistently dealing with those moments of self-doubt, that you're surrounding yourself with people who are not bringing you down.
- 6:32SPEAKER_01: And then one thing, one last thing that I want to mention is that's so critical to the being relationally self-aware, and that's really knowing what your values are.
- 6:44SPEAKER_01: Taking time to define your values so each day you can come back to those and you can ask yourself if I were to lean into my value just 5% more, or if I am I am I living by my values?
- 6:56SPEAKER_01: Even just that asking that question.
- 6:58SPEAKER_01: Because when we feel self-doubt, if we can ground ourselves back into our values, what makes us who we are, that can release the hold that self-doubt has on us, or release the hold that any type of imposter syndrome has on us.
- 7:13SPEAKER_01: Because at the end of the day, our values are what really are our constitution, right?
- 7:20SPEAKER_01: So being able to really ground back into those.
- 7:24SPEAKER_01: The other thing that I want to say is that, you know, going through self-doubt or overcoming self-doubt is not a one-and-done process.
- 7:31SPEAKER_01: This is sort of a lifelong thing that we go through because we we're always growing and evolving.
- 7:37SPEAKER_01: So as we we combat or get to one place of releasing it, you know, it'll come back in a different way, but it's not gonna be the same way.
- 7:45SPEAKER_01: It's gonna be a new way.
- 7:46SPEAKER_01: Um, and and truly what this comes down to is personal development and self-growth is not a one and done thing at all.
- 7:54SPEAKER_01: It's we're not trying to become immune to these things.
- 7:56SPEAKER_01: What we're trying to do is build tools and build ways of navigating.
- 8:01SPEAKER_01: So it's a new way.
- 8:03SPEAKER_01: As you go through this, you're gonna learn ways of navigating self-doubt, facing that challenge.
- 8:08SPEAKER_01: And so then when it pops up in different ways or different elements, you'll have those tools in your tool belt to work through.
- 8:15SPEAKER_01: Again, through coaching, this can be something that you can work through.
- 8:19SPEAKER_01: And so, if at any point in time you feel like you could benefit from just a conversation, just a powerful conversation around what this could look like, absolutely feel free to book a time to talk at uh chatwithcomedy.com.
