• 0:02
  [SPEAKER_00]: Hi, folks.
• 0:02
[SPEAKER_00]: Welcome to the episode of Film Study.
• 0:04
  [SPEAKER_00]: This is Kent McCusik.
• 0:05
[SPEAKER_00]: It's time for today's camp notes from August 25th.
• 0:08
[SPEAKER_00]: Today, a fairly short episode because practice was closed to the media.
• 0:12
[SPEAKER_00]: They had a podium only with a walkthrough for practice.
• 0:17
[SPEAKER_00]: That was a walkthrough for the joint practice with the commanders that will occur to Maro.
• 0:21
[SPEAKER_00]: So a high intensity practice tomorrow that we're expecting it will be very well attended.
• 0:27
  [SPEAKER_00]: I'm sure.
• 0:28
[SPEAKER_00]: Thursday, then we'll be another close practice before the game, so actually tomorrow is really the last big day of camp.
• 0:36
[SPEAKER_00]: After the Friday game with the commanders, Sunday is then cut down day, so it's a very big week here for the Baltimore Ravens and after the futures of a lot of young men obviously.
• 0:46
[SPEAKER_00]: At the podium today, we had Anthony Levine up first, praised Ryan Eccle for his confidence and personality.
• 0:53
[SPEAKER_00]: He said he always comes to everyone once to boom one.
• 0:56
[SPEAKER_00]: So I imagine that they have different things they wanted to do, and different calls.
• 1:00
[SPEAKER_00]: They make on individual puns.
• 1:02
[SPEAKER_00]: They want a directional pun.
• 1:03
[SPEAKER_00]: They want a booming pun to get over that.
• 1:06
[SPEAKER_00]: But you want to mix it up probably a little bit, so that the return man can't do one thing or another,
• 1:14
[SPEAKER_00]: And they did a good job in this last game of booming them towards the one corner of the field.
• 1:20
[SPEAKER_00]: It was done very well both on kickoffs and on puns I thought.
• 1:24
[SPEAKER_00]: said Randy Brown is doing great job with the kicker and the punter hang time and direction for equity in particular are good.
• 1:33
  [SPEAKER_00]: He did it.
• 1:33
[SPEAKER_00]: He was asked if the lack of opponent scoring was impeding his ability to try out the kickoff return unit.
• 1:41
[SPEAKER_00]: There hadn't been, you know, the kickoff for turn unit for the other team kicks off of him once per game if they get shut out and they've only scored twice what one field goal and one touchdown otherwise they've only gotten four total
• 1:54
[SPEAKER_00]: And Levine said something very interesting.
• 1:55
[SPEAKER_00]: He said, Special Teams is a weapon.
• 1:57
[SPEAKER_00]: Okay, that part is not the interesting part.
• 1:58
[SPEAKER_00]: The interesting part is he says you could evaluate their ability on special teams with characteristics of their play on offense and defense.
• 2:07
[SPEAKER_00]: Very good to hear, you know, how quickly they run and they hit whatnot.
• 2:11
[SPEAKER_00]: Now there's a whole lot of lane play that goes in special teams as well on on the kickoff game.
• 2:14
[SPEAKER_00]: So there's more specialized stuff, but you know, there's also a lot of portable skills and overlapping skills that entities pointing to there.
• 2:24
[SPEAKER_00]: He asked if he would have the ability to put his thumb on the scale for special teams needs as part of the roster building process.
• 2:33
[SPEAKER_00]: Kyle Goon asked this question and the idea was, you know, if he thinks he needs something specific.
• 2:39
  [SPEAKER_00]: Can he do that?
• 2:40
[SPEAKER_00]: He did say that he thought he had a.
• 2:44
[SPEAKER_00]: a hand in that that you know he talked about meetings where they talk about the roster and what not I think it's a it's a football Operations say more generally even than just a coaching side that you know while mentor would have the final say from a coaching perspective that Eric to cost a certain he has to say in the roster as well
• 3:01
[SPEAKER_00]: So I think that's, you know, there are a lot of people who have a say and the individual coaches trying to get, you know, a particular, a special teams coach who's trying to get the right defensive players or offensive players on the team that also meet more of his special teams needs is something we have seen before and look at episodes of hard knocks before.
• 3:20
[SPEAKER_00]: I asked him specifically if Ethan Berks kick blocking ability was something that he would advocate for in terms of a roster spot.
• 3:29
[SPEAKER_00]: He didn't want to answer that question directly.
• 3:31
[SPEAKER_00]: So he talked about it.
• 3:32
[SPEAKER_00]: He likes every single player, you know, and took all the outside linebackers.
• 3:37
[SPEAKER_00]: He immediately felt like he had to mention.
• 3:39
[SPEAKER_00]: And, you know, sometimes get less out of an answer than you get, but Anthony, he's fairly polished at the podium in terms of understanding what he shouldn't say and he reverts very quickly to comments about fundamentals and basics and, you know, being, you know, controlled aggression and they say, he talks about, you know, fundamental elements and
• 4:09
[SPEAKER_00]: Anyway, next the podium was Declan Doyle.
• 4:12
[SPEAKER_00]: Declan is always extremely impressive and detailed as you've heard all throughout camp here.
• 4:18
[SPEAKER_00]: He was asked about being in the booth, because he said he was going to try both the booth and the sideline to call the place wrong.
• 4:25
[SPEAKER_00]: And he started in the booth the first game.
• 4:27
[SPEAKER_00]: The second game, he was in the booth again.
• 4:30
[SPEAKER_00]: So he said he's decided to stay there and the reasons he gave were threefold.
• 4:36
[SPEAKER_00]: Communication with the QB has been good.
• 4:39
[SPEAKER_00]: said he can also communicate with the coaches and the primary coach he thinks he needs to communicate with is is he wolf fork the the QB coach and Chris he's a direct line to Lamar Jackson he did mention that and and I don't know what he has to do to get in contact with with wolf fork other than he is on the on the headset line which you want to kind of maintain a sort of a radio silence on you talk Lamar directly
• 5:06
[SPEAKER_00]: when he's anywhere between plays.
• 5:07
[SPEAKER_00]: That's the offensive coordinator's job, of course, but otherwise you want to keep that maintained that radio silence.
• 5:13
[SPEAKER_00]: Anyway, he said he's going to stay in the booth because they now have limited reps remaining of dress rehearsal time.
• 5:21
[SPEAKER_00]: It's really just this game against the commanders and then they're going to be off to the regular season and he wants to
• 5:27
[SPEAKER_00]: effectively knock the kinks out of that process.
• 5:30
[SPEAKER_00]: So by opening day, they're running very smoothly in that way.
• 5:33
[SPEAKER_00]: So while he said he was going to do both, you say, talk to some of the people around the league, it decided that the booth was where he was, where he's going to be and he, and, you know, there's been nothing that's dissuaded him about that since he's been up there.
• 5:46
[SPEAKER_00]: He did say the Minnesota game was kind of a good one for that for being in the booth because they bring unique challenges with adjustments needed during the game which really test communication.
• 5:57
[SPEAKER_00]: So Brian for us of course known for being a complex blitz guy and he did some of that particularly the first half, but anyway, they communicated he said that worked well.
• 6:09
[SPEAKER_00]: He said he will be there, the question, somebody felt like they needed to ask the question exactly again.
• 6:14
[SPEAKER_00]: And he said, yes, I'm going to be there in pre-season three and in all of the regular season.
• 6:18
[SPEAKER_00]: So it seems to be the permit change.
• 6:22
[SPEAKER_00]: In terms of play count, I asked a question about efficiency of the joint practices and whether or not I understand the quality of reps, of course, is going to be higher.
• 6:33
[SPEAKER_00]: or you hope so during a joint practice against the opponent you don't know necessarily as well as you know your own defense and certainly one is that it's committed to trying and doesn't have the same reservations or desire to have brother-in-law play.
• 6:46
[SPEAKER_00]: But while you understand the quality of the reps that can be higher, do you get more reps out of an individual day?
• 6:54
[SPEAKER_00]: He said, no, you actually get less
• 6:57
[SPEAKER_00]: by design, and he put it to the Minnesota practice.
• 6:59
[SPEAKER_00]: He said, that was a case where they want to fish it work, but they don't want to tire out their players with the concurrent higher risk of injury.
• 7:11
[SPEAKER_00]: So you want to have, you want to have,
• 7:14
[SPEAKER_00]: fewer but high quality reps, where you go through his treat it like a regular game and a regular game has less reps for offense and defense, you know, you get about 60, whereas a practice, you might have a tool about a hundred reps between sevens and elevens, I believe.
• 7:28
[SPEAKER_00]: So anyway, trying to have it be a little bit less tired, less risk of injury.
• 7:34
[SPEAKER_00]: Anyway, with joint practices against the Vikings, he said, day one was good, they were able to put out some good tape.
• 7:40
[SPEAKER_00]: Day two, he said, they weren't as good.
• 7:41
[SPEAKER_00]: And particularly in the red zone, he was a little bit concerned about that.
• 7:45
[SPEAKER_00]: But also that it was a teaching moment.
• 7:47
[SPEAKER_00]: You know, there's value to good tape, there's value to bad tape.
• 7:50
[SPEAKER_00]: And I think he's being wise about that.
• 7:53
[SPEAKER_00]: That there are things he can learn from a bad day of play on that field.
• 7:58
[SPEAKER_00]: And there's hopefully things he can coach from that.
• 8:02
[SPEAKER_00]: All right, Cordell asked him about, you know, on time passing game from Lamar, and he said, they're trying to give Lamar clean on time reads, which is this is really good and intentional.
• 8:15
[SPEAKER_00]: But they don't want to take play extension away from him.
• 8:18
[SPEAKER_00]: Obviously, that reduces the value of Lamar Jackson to do that.
• 8:21
[SPEAKER_00]: It's something we've been talking about a lot this offseason is sure, adding a few on times those is good.
• 8:27
[SPEAKER_00]: but you also want to have the ability to make extended plays.
• 8:29
[SPEAKER_00]: And you know what, what he's saying is the best version of that because he's saying, yeah, we want to give him a clean set of first reads to basically work through and then maybe after one, maybe two reads and then after that, he can go into play extension.
• 8:48
[SPEAKER_00]: And then this was where it really got cool.
• 8:50
[SPEAKER_00]: He talked about the scrambled drill and how
• 8:54
  [SPEAKER_00]: plays are extended.
• 8:55
[SPEAKER_00]: He said, spacing rules are very important for the screen.
• 9:00
[SPEAKER_00]: It's going to be you want it to be calculated.
• 9:02
  [SPEAKER_00]: That's what we're used.
• 9:03
[SPEAKER_00]: The online needs to continue blocking as the other eligible receivers attempt to find space.
• 9:11
[SPEAKER_00]: I thought that was extremely good, extremely telling stuff from Doyle and I look forward to that probably as much as anything about this
• 9:23
[SPEAKER_00]: The clean reads really help them are, and can they do more even with extended plays than they have in past years, because they have a cleaner set of rules for what people are supposed to try and do.
• 9:35
[SPEAKER_00]: Now you don't want to give your rules away to your opponent, and Lamar has lived by mind-meled with certain players, like Mark Andrews, Lexi Flowers, like Rashad Baitman, in terms of where he can go with an extended ball.
• 9:46
[SPEAKER_00]: But this will be really interesting to see if what Deckendoil does really creates even better spacing on the extended play.
• 9:55
[SPEAKER_00]: So I thought that was some very interesting stuff.
• 9:57
[SPEAKER_00]: It's worth listening to that interview, by the way, if you have time.
• 10:02
[SPEAKER_00]: All right, he says as training camp has gone on, he's seen the second play happening.
• 10:06
[SPEAKER_00]: And we says that he means guys doing the right things with regard to their responsibilities on the play after the initial play.
• 10:14
[SPEAKER_00]: So when they extend, are they moving around to the right spaces and whatnot?
• 10:18
  [SPEAKER_00]: So that's very encouraging, I think.
• 10:21
[SPEAKER_00]: And you know, I think one of the things I'm really looking forward to.
• 10:25
[SPEAKER_00]: Anyway, it was asked about the center competition.
• 10:27
[SPEAKER_00]: He said, talks about the two guys now.
• 10:30
[SPEAKER_00]: The two guys, there's no mention of Cory Bull like at this point, obviously.
• 10:33
[SPEAKER_00]: It's between Javan, Gwyn, and Ethan Posing.
• 10:35
[SPEAKER_00]: So it's Javan, Gwyn, he gave us a little bit.
• 10:37
[SPEAKER_00]: He said he's athletic, all the tools to be a good center with Ethan Posing.
• 10:42
[SPEAKER_00]: He says it's done an excellent job.
• 10:43
[SPEAKER_00]: He's new to the building, but he's early to arrive.
• 10:46
[SPEAKER_00]: He talked about the anti-pinter as having handled a lot of the communication very well.
• 10:51
[SPEAKER_00]: Obviously, they're having to move on without him.
• 10:54
[SPEAKER_00]: He used the word good for Gwen and excellent for Posek.
• 10:57
[SPEAKER_00]: That's the, those are the words he's using and each of those two.
• 11:01
[SPEAKER_00]: It almost seems to me like he's kind of decided and maybe mentors decided that Posek is gonna be the guy.
• 11:07
[SPEAKER_00]: He's getting the last shot at first team reps and supposedly he's gonna have that in that in the commander's game on Friday and probably in the commander's joint practice tomorrow.
• 11:18
[SPEAKER_00]: So we'll see how that goes.
• 11:19
[SPEAKER_00]: It may even be a case where
• 11:21
[SPEAKER_00]: If the joint practice goes well, they make she sit postsick and that would be the biggest indicator of all, whoever sits for that final game, if there is such a person, is really in the driver's seat to be the starter come the opener.
• 11:34
[SPEAKER_00]: I don't think they want the starter to be out there any more than they have to be, given how thin they are at the position.
• 11:41
[SPEAKER_00]: And they've got Cory Bullock who can take a lot of the steps and be a
• 11:47
[SPEAKER_00]: as the season progresses at that position.
• 11:49
[SPEAKER_00]: So I think they have good reasons to give some of the steps to somebody other than Ethan or Javan in this game.
• 11:59
[SPEAKER_00]: So that'll be interesting to see how that plays out.
• 12:00
[SPEAKER_00]: And we actually got some things to look forward to in this third preseason game that are meaningful.
• 12:07
[SPEAKER_00]: All right, from the Washington joint practice Coleman asked him, what do you want to get?
• 12:12
[SPEAKER_00]: He said the defense is similar to Minnesota and he wants a higher level of execution from his own players.
• 12:19
[SPEAKER_00]: It's just at that level.
• 12:20
[SPEAKER_00]: So obviously not entirely satisfied with what happened against the Vikings and I can understand that, I guess.
• 12:26
[SPEAKER_00]: I stress the limited work so far for Joe Feignano prior to Thompson's injury, says a great example of a guy who's been studying and watching for his opportunity, said he's very naturally calm in the huddle.
• 12:40
[SPEAKER_00]: I've been most impressed with what Feignano has done, standing in against the blitz that's been exceptional.
• 12:46
[SPEAKER_00]: We'll take a break and we'll be back for a couple more interviews.
• 12:49
  [SPEAKER_00]: All right, we're back.
• 12:50
[SPEAKER_00]: And Anthony Weaver was next at the podium.
• 12:53
[SPEAKER_00]: He was active with cut-down day coming, was there an anxiousness around the building, and he said, well, yeah, people can't ignore it, but the message for players is to be the best version of themselves that they can be, which is, or less what we've been hearing all along from any coach.
• 13:08
[SPEAKER_00]: with regard to on field responsibilities he was asked how he's been working with mentor he says it's been pretty smooth.
• 13:16
[SPEAKER_00]: They're kind of like yin and yang of football knowledge him you know really being familiar with the front end and Jesse being familiar with the back end and he says he expects to focus on the front end on game day.
• 13:30
[SPEAKER_00]: The camera by the way absolutely loves Anthony Weaver the camera during these preseason games and right on top on and about the the whole game the if I I'm Jesse midter And I were the jealous type.
• 13:41
[SPEAKER_00]: I might you know say why are you focusing on Anthony Weaver?
• 13:44
[SPEAKER_00]: I'm the one making the calls here, but but anyway, they're on him a lot
• 13:48
[SPEAKER_00]: He's clearly, you can see the relatability with players when they come off the field in particular.
• 13:54
[SPEAKER_00]: You can see his level of focus from that, but you know, I think there's a, there's a, for the photogenic nature of him is also Causing the camera to be there, which is kind of interesting and something that might help him get ahead coaching role a little sooner, perhaps.
• 14:10
  [SPEAKER_00]: He said,
• 14:11
[SPEAKER_00]: I asked him about the elements of dropping a coverage and that they'd done a fair amount of it in this last game.
• 14:18
[SPEAKER_00]: And he said, the outside linebackers have extremely high football IQ.
• 14:22
[SPEAKER_00]: Not the first time he would mention that at the last time he'd mentioned that in this interview segment.
• 14:27
[SPEAKER_00]: But he said, they have extremely high football IQ.
• 14:29
[SPEAKER_00]: And with that, the drop element comes very naturally.
• 14:33
[SPEAKER_00]: And he said that, of course, that's flexibility, the defense.
• 14:41
[SPEAKER_00]: You know, Ravens have always lived without side line backers who had coverage skills and he thought that that, you know, basically broadly applied that to the, to the group.
• 14:51
[SPEAKER_00]: Chandler Rivers has been consistently improving.
• 14:53
[SPEAKER_00]: He talked about him a little bit.
• 14:54
[SPEAKER_00]: Did talk about Kian Martin as well similar stuff.
• 14:57
[SPEAKER_00]: But Chandler has said he thinks he can play both inside and outside.
• 15:00
  [SPEAKER_00]: And plus he's a good blitzer.
• 15:02
[SPEAKER_00]: So he's an exciting player to him.
• 15:04
[SPEAKER_00]: It was asked about a desa Isaac, and particularly the time he'd missed for a couple years, a city praised him for his hard work, a back on the field, making some plays in terms of sex, and evoked a memory from yesterday's practice where they had a walkthrough, where he had locked somebody out as a three-tick, and that means he's been kicked inside in order to do that.
• 15:26
[SPEAKER_00]: Now, I haven't really noticed a desa Isaac getting kicked inside at any point during camp.
• 15:35
[SPEAKER_00]: The fact that Anthony has talked about it is very interesting to me because I think he's been in just a regular outside lineback or roll.
• 15:42
[SPEAKER_00]: So we'll see how that goes on.
• 15:44
[SPEAKER_00]: I'm sure some of these specialist roles, you know, this is one of the things we've already said is they don't really change the call sheet at all.
• 15:50
[SPEAKER_00]: during the, through the pre-season, and that goes right along with always playing basic nickel is that, you know, you only play these very basic defenses and you really want to just evaluate your players and try and see how they can react to different situations and know what they're doing.
• 16:06
[SPEAKER_00]: And it doesn't mean they don't call a blitz everyone's little while or stunts or do other things that mentor is calling.
• 16:11
[SPEAKER_00]: It just means that they're largely lining up in the same package and they're, and they're working from there.
• 16:16
[SPEAKER_00]: And we don't only saw one dime package so far
• 16:20
[SPEAKER_00]: into preseason games, which is really unusual, or not unusual, is probably more normal, but then it makes you wonder, is why did you decide that one time to put Keyondri Jackson up front against the Vikings?
• 16:33
[SPEAKER_00]: And, you know, I just love to hear the answer to that question, but winter wasn't at the podium today, so I didn't get that chance, and tomorrow is going to be a very busy day of question, so I doubt all, I'll do it then either.
• 16:44
[SPEAKER_00]: is asked about a neus pebbles.
• 16:46
[SPEAKER_00]: Now, this is a great comparison.
• 16:48
[SPEAKER_00]: He compared him to Kyle Williams in Buffalo.
• 16:51
[SPEAKER_00]: If you don't know who Kyle Williams is, go back and take a look, take a look at his grades on PFF outstanding football player for quite a long time with Buffalo.
• 17:00
[SPEAKER_00]: And he said, he needs consistency, but he sees light bulb moments in practice and things are just,
• 17:08
[SPEAKER_00]: consistently are coming to him from time to time.
• 17:11
[SPEAKER_00]: He says he needs a higher level of consistency, but that's extremely complementary to call him like Kyle Williams.
• 17:19
  [SPEAKER_00]: Needless to say.
• 17:21
[SPEAKER_00]: One more time, he talked about the collective football IQ of the defense.
• 17:24
[SPEAKER_00]: He says it's very high, and that allows him to offer the illusion of complexity to opposing offensive coordinators and quarterbacks.
• 17:33
[SPEAKER_00]: But in the process, they're not really slowing their own guys down.
• 17:38
[SPEAKER_00]: One fear of complexity is to put your guys in bad positions from their fakeery.
• 17:45
[SPEAKER_00]: The best example I can give you is starting your inside linebackers in the A gap and dropping them to pressure or sin pressure basis.
• 17:52
[SPEAKER_00]: Yes, it confuses the offensive line sum.
• 17:54
[SPEAKER_00]: It also puts your inside linebackers in a more difficult place in terms of their coverage assignment.
• 18:00
[SPEAKER_00]: So if you're going to do it, you better know what you're doing.
• 18:02
[SPEAKER_00]: They better know exactly where they're headed to, exactly what their responsibility is, and you better have some hope.
• 18:08
[SPEAKER_00]: that the quarterback's not going to get his the ball out of his hands quickly on a hot read that it's going to subvert what you're trying to do in terms of the agap look so great great point to be made there is that they're they're not slowing down their own guys in their own in the in the process with the complexity they're showing.
• 18:29
  [SPEAKER_00]: All right, what else?
• 18:30
[SPEAKER_00]: He was asked about the international pathway program players, a Koye and Olegigad.
• 18:35
[SPEAKER_00]: Nice things to say about both of them.
• 18:38
[SPEAKER_00]: And, you know, those are two guys that I think the readers who probably love to keep both of them.
• 18:43
[SPEAKER_00]: They certainly, if there's a way to keep a Koye on the roster, then I'm sure they'll offer a practice squad spot to Olegigad with an IPP designation, because it's free.
• 18:52
[SPEAKER_00]: And they don't have anybody else currently that would fill in fit into that.
• 18:55
  [SPEAKER_00]: There might be
• 18:58
[SPEAKER_00]: It was seemed very natural that they would try and keep a little jig a potentially to supplement what will be a fairly thin starting point for the defensive line next year.
• 19:10
[SPEAKER_00]: So if you could sell the old jig in the notion, hey, we've got the IPP piece to buy.
• 19:14
[SPEAKER_00]: And if you're here next year, we have a couple of older guys leaving, Jenkins and
• 19:23
[SPEAKER_00]: Class Campbell, we'll not be around next year and I'll likely hit it.
• 19:26
[SPEAKER_00]: And hey, this is a pretty good place to be next season.
• 19:31
[SPEAKER_00]: They might be able to sell that to them and hopefully that would be good.
• 19:35
  [SPEAKER_00]: Take a break.
• 19:36
[SPEAKER_00]: I want to tell you about a special project we have starting September 9.
• 19:43
[SPEAKER_00]: Hi folks, I want to tell you about a new project for the season that has been very excited.
• 19:46
[SPEAKER_00]: If any I am today's show and I will be teeming up with the elephant in the room in Miller'sville to bring you a live broadcast on 1057 the fan every Wednesday night.
• 19:56
[SPEAKER_00]: Each night will be an experience filled with great food and drink.
• 20:00
[SPEAKER_00]: Games, giveaways, and great football talk.
• 20:03
[SPEAKER_00]: Now we've had a chance to look at owner and navy veteran Jeremy Allen's menu.
• 20:07
[SPEAKER_00]: In terms of food, Morin has her eye on the panseared salmon with mushroom risotto.
• 20:12
[SPEAKER_00]: I'm looking to get short rib potato skins.
• 20:15
[SPEAKER_00]: And Jeremy Khan recommends the bacon wrap dates.
• 20:18
[SPEAKER_00]: A full list of crafted cocktails is complimented by both domestic and regional craft beers.
• 20:24
[SPEAKER_00]: Whatever you're craving, the elephant's extensive menu has the variety to satisfy you.
• 20:30
[SPEAKER_00]: And when you're ready to talk, X's and O's with Femi and Me, the elephant in the room will be the place to be this fall.
• 20:36
[SPEAKER_00]: Our first show will be September 9th from 7 to 9 p.m., and 1057, the fan will be broadcasting live every week for the remainder of the season.
• 20:45
[SPEAKER_00]: That's the elephant in the room, 8421 veterans highway,
• 20:50
  [SPEAKER_00]: Alright, we're back.
• 20:51
[SPEAKER_00]: Trent and Simpson was last at the microphone.
• 20:54
[SPEAKER_00]: He's focused on the mental approach.
• 20:57
[SPEAKER_00]: He said this off season.
• 20:58
[SPEAKER_00]: So obviously, it passed season.
• 21:00
[SPEAKER_00]: He's been more of a physical guy.
• 21:02
[SPEAKER_00]: But he said, you know, he's in the best position of his life physically, mentally, spiritually.
• 21:08
[SPEAKER_00]: You know, the physically is he tied to the
• 21:14
[SPEAKER_00]: practice is being a little bit shorter, but I don't think that's the only reason for it.
• 21:17
[SPEAKER_00]: And it's the mental thing is what he worked on this offseason City worked on a lot of film study stuff to try and get better there.
• 21:25
[SPEAKER_00]: And yeah, I think if you talk to any analysts about Trent and Simpson,
• 21:29
[SPEAKER_00]: they tell you that that's the thing that needs to become more clear.
• 21:33
[SPEAKER_00]: When he picks up the mental part of the game, when he gets to be a better, more instinctual player, the way that Rokuan is, he'll be a lot more valuable than he is right now.
• 21:42
[SPEAKER_00]: And also, he's got tremendous size and strength for the position.
• 21:46
[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, he's built to play Mike.
• 21:49
  [SPEAKER_00]: He's just
• 21:50
[SPEAKER_00]: It doesn't quite have the reaction in sticks, so he's more of a natural trail player and it would be a guy that you know, is better off working off Rokwans moves and trying to figure out what Rokwans is doing than what I need to do, whether that means you know, I need to take this gap since Rokwans taking that one or whether I need to follow Rokwans to the football, because I know he knows where it is, either of those things, that's those are, you know, possible
• 22:18
[SPEAKER_00]: symptoms of that will call it.
• 22:20
[SPEAKER_00]: The more he's able to define that himself and to not make those false read steps that come in inside linebacker, the more that he'll be able to handle some of the coverage responsibilities say between level two and three, some of the getting to the gaps, a half step quicker so that he's there before the ball carry gets in, even can make some plays in the back field.
• 22:39
[SPEAKER_00]: And even some blitzing things and timing that out better come from better mental preparation.
• 22:44
  [SPEAKER_00]: So,
• 22:44
[SPEAKER_00]: I have big hopes for Trent and this year and I hope this is a big year for him.
• 22:49
[SPEAKER_00]: He says, Jesse Mentor has been very clear about roles and jobs and he's straight to the point.
• 22:53
[SPEAKER_00]: That's what we've very pretty much from everybody.
• 22:55
[SPEAKER_00]: He says the walkthroughs are away in which mentor reminds them about communication and they have these quarter speed or half speed walkthroughs they do.
• 23:07
[SPEAKER_00]: Some of them they do at the beginning of practice.
• 23:09
  [SPEAKER_00]: I think there's a
• 23:13
[SPEAKER_00]: You know, he's basically saying that those walkthroughs allow them to learn how to play faster together, which I thought was an interesting comment.
• 23:22
[SPEAKER_00]: said Anthony weaver's personality and energy are entirely contagious and not surprising and that weaver's job is to keep it all together on the sidelines during games and then he kind of backpedaled from that to say that everyone is together in communicating all the coaches and Jesse Mentor and weaver and all the three of the position groups and all three levels of the defense
• 23:46
[SPEAKER_00]: So he, I think he really didn't want to indicate in some way that Weaver's role was more important than Minters or that he's the only coach that's worried about putting the pieces together that, you know, this we've said, no, in truth, that may be exactly what Minter has tasked Weaver with doing.
• 24:09
[SPEAKER_00]: You know, make sure you, the, the, the linebackers and you're, and you're a defensive lineman, know what's going on together and make sure that the safety knows what those two were doing together.
• 24:18
[SPEAKER_00]: So he can tell the cornerbacker, that, that sort of thing could easily something, mentor is delegating to him, but Trent and kind of didn't, felt like it, he didn't really want to say what he had already said.
• 24:30
[SPEAKER_00]: So he, he kind of backed on it.
• 24:33
[SPEAKER_00]: He says he tries to lead by example as the second most tenured linebacker in the room, but it's kind of surprised by it himself that he's been there all now of seven four years and he's 25 years old, but he's the second oldest guy because Higgins and Buchanan are junior to him by a couple of years.
• 24:49
[SPEAKER_00]: So, you know, it's interesting that he's had to make that transition.
• 24:53
[SPEAKER_00]: And I asked him specifically if during that second half, or if at half time, he'd been asked that he might need to dress again because two line-in-side linebackers went down the first half.
• 25:05
[SPEAKER_00]: He had the Higgins coming back from concussion, and I remember a couple years ago, they had to play Patrick Queen for extra time in the second half, and it's clearly something Patrick Queen was not happy about doing.
• 25:16
[SPEAKER_00]: But it had to be done.
• 25:17
[SPEAKER_00]: Simpsons response to it was, no, they never asked, but I'd love to play.
• 25:22
[SPEAKER_00]: I'd love to get out there again.
• 25:23
[SPEAKER_00]: So it seems like Trenton probably is kind of a little sad that he's not getting regular reps during the preseason.
• 25:32
[SPEAKER_00]: And he and you can't, obviously, he's been a bit hurt, but Roku and have been on the sideline the entire time.
• 25:40
[SPEAKER_00]: Anyway, that's going to do it for a day, a abbreviated episode, but interesting stuff I thought at the podium today, please give us a shot on September 9th and come out for the event at the elephant in the room.
• 25:53
  [SPEAKER_00]: I think you'll have a lot of fun.
• 25:54
[SPEAKER_00]: We have a bunch of games planned, so I'm hoping to play a little bit of Raven's chronology among other things.
• 26:00
[SPEAKER_00]: If you ever play that with it, it's fun.
• 26:01
[SPEAKER_00]: We may have some other things going on too that I'm going to keep on the wraps for now, but Femi and I have been texting about this program every day and we're looking forward to it tremendously and I think it'll be a lot of fun.
• 26:13
[SPEAKER_00]: If you have a show idea or a question, use film study mailbag at gmail.com.
• 26:18
[SPEAKER_00]: That's where I'd like to direct questions in the future and that's being watched very closely.
• 26:22
  [SPEAKER_00]: Appreciate y'all.
• 26:23
[SPEAKER_00]: Thanks for listening and we'll talk
