- 7:34Speaker 1: the sacraments become effectual means of salvation? Answer? The sacraments
- 7:40Speaker 1: become effectual means of salvation not by any power in

- 8:18Speaker 1: faith and all other graces, to oblige them to obedience,

- 9:15Speaker 1: of the New Testament, wherein Christ Hath ordained the washing
- 9:18Speaker 1: with water in the name of the Father and of
- 9:21Speaker 1: the Son and of the Holy Ghost, to be a
- 9:23Speaker 1: sign and seal of engrafting into himself a remission of
- 9:27Speaker 1: sins by His blood and regeneration by His spirit of
- 9:31Speaker 1: adoption and resurrection unto everlasting life, and whereby the parties
- 9:36Speaker 1: baptized are solemnly admitted into the Visible Church and enter
- 9:41Speaker 1: into an open and professed engagement to be holy and only.
- 9:45Speaker 1: The Lord's question one hundred sixty six. Unto whom is
- 9:50Speaker 1: baptism to be administered? Answer? Baptism is not to be

- 10:13Speaker 1: that respect within the Covenant and to be baptized. Question
- 10:19Speaker 1: one hundred sixty seven, How is baptism to be improved
- 10:23Speaker 1: by us? Answer? The needful but much neglected duty of
- 10:28Speaker 1: improving our baptism is to be performed by us all
- 10:31Speaker 1: our life long, especially in the time of temptation, and
- 10:35Speaker 1: when we are present at the administration of it to others.
- 10:39Speaker 1: By serious and thankful consideration of the nature of it
- 10:42Speaker 1: and of the ends for which Christ instituted it, the
- 10:46Speaker 1: privileges and benefits conferred and sealed thereby, and our solemn
- 10:50Speaker 1: vow made therein, by being humbled for our sinful defilement,
- 10:55Speaker 1: are falling short of and walking contrary to the grace
- 10:59Speaker 1: of baptism and our engagements, by growing up to assurance
- 11:03Speaker 1: of pardon of sin and of all other blessings sealed
- 11:07Speaker 1: to us in that sacrament, by drawing strength from the
- 11:10Speaker 1: death and resurrection of Christ, into whom we are baptized
- 11:14Speaker 1: for the mortifying of sin and quickening of grace, and
- 11:18Speaker 1: by endeavoring to live by faith, to have our conversation
- 11:22Speaker 1: in holiness and righteousness as those that have therein given
- 11:25Speaker 1: up their names to Christ, and to walk in brotherly love,
- 11:30Speaker 1: as being baptized by the same spirit into one body.
- 11:35Speaker 1: Question one hundred sixty eight What is the Lord's Supper? Answer?
- 11:41Speaker 1: The Lord's Supper is a sacrament of the New Testament,
- 11:44Speaker 1: wherein by giving and receiving bread and wine according to
- 11:47Speaker 1: the appointment of Jesus Christ, his death is shown forth,
- 11:51Speaker 1: and they that worthily communicate feed upon His body and
- 11:55Speaker 1: blood to their spiritual nourishment and growth. In grace, have
- 11:59Speaker 1: their union and communion with Him confirmed, testify and renew
- 12:04Speaker 1: their thankfulness and engagement to God, and their mutual love
- 12:07Speaker 1: and fellowship with each other as members of the same
- 12:10Speaker 1: mystical body. Question one hundred sixty nine, How hath Christ
- 12:16Speaker 1: appointed bread and wine to be given and received in
- 12:19Speaker 1: the sacrament of the Lord's Supper? Answer? Christ, hath appointed
- 12:24Speaker 1: the ministers of His Word in the administration of the
- 12:27Speaker 1: Sacrament of the Lord's Supper, to set apart the bread
- 12:30Speaker 1: and wine from common use by the word of institution,
- 12:34Speaker 1: thanksgiving and prayer, to take and break the bread, and
- 12:38Speaker 1: to give both the bread and the wine to the communicants,
- 12:41Speaker 1: who are, by the same appointment to take and eat
- 12:44Speaker 1: the bread and to drink the wine, in thankful remembrance
- 12:48Speaker 1: that the body of Christ was broken and given, and
- 12:50Speaker 1: his blood shed for them. Question one hundred seventy how
- 12:56Speaker 1: do they that worthily communicate in the Lord's Supper feed
- 13:00Speaker 1: upon the body and blood of Christ? Therein answer, as
- 13:04Speaker 1: the body and blood of Christ are not corporally or
- 13:07Speaker 1: kernally present in with or under the bread and wine
- 13:11Speaker 1: of the Lord's Supper, and yet are spiritually present to
- 13:14Speaker 1: the faith of the receiver, no less truly and really
- 13:18Speaker 1: than the elements themselves are to our outward senses. So
- 13:22Speaker 1: they that worthily communicate in the Sacrament of the Lord's
- 13:25Speaker 1: Supper do therein feed upon the body and blood of Christ,
- 13:29Speaker 1: not after a corporal and carnal but in a spiritual manner,
- 13:33Speaker 1: yet truly and really, while by faith they receive and
- 13:37Speaker 1: apply unto themselves Christ crucified and all the benefits of
- 13:41Speaker 1: His death. Question one hundred seventy one. How are they
- 13:46Speaker 1: that receive the sacrament of the Lord's Supper to prepare
- 13:49Speaker 1: themselves before they come unto it? Answer? They that receive
- 13:54Speaker 1: the sacrament of the Lord's Supper are before they come
- 13:58Speaker 1: to prepare themselves thereunto by examining themselves of their being
- 14:02Speaker 1: in Christ, of their sins and wants, of the truth
- 14:06Speaker 1: and measure of their knowledge, faith, repentance, love to God
- 14:10Speaker 1: and the brethren, charity to all men, forgiving those that
- 14:14Speaker 1: have done them wrong, of their desires after Christ and
- 14:18Speaker 1: of their new obedience, and by renewing the exercise of
- 14:22Speaker 1: these graces by serious meditation and fervent prayer. Question one
- 14:28Speaker 1: hundred seventy two. May one who doubteth of his being
- 14:32Speaker 1: in Christ, or of his due preparation come to the
- 14:35Speaker 1: Lord's Supper. Answer. One who doubteth of his being in Christ,
- 14:40Speaker 1: or of his due preparation to the sacrament of the
- 14:43Speaker 1: Lord's Supper may have true interest in Christ, though he
- 14:47Speaker 1: be not yet assured thereof and in God's account hath
- 14:51Speaker 1: it if he be duly affected with the apprehension of
- 14:54Speaker 1: the want of it, and unfeignedly desires to be found
- 14:57Speaker 1: in Christ and to depart from iniquity. In which case,
- 15:02Speaker 1: because promises are made, and this sacrament is appointed for
- 15:05Speaker 1: the relief even of weak and doubting Christians, he is
- 15:09Speaker 1: to bewail his unbelief and labor to have his doubts resolved,
- 15:13Speaker 1: And so doing he may and ought to come to
- 15:16Speaker 1: the Lord's Supper, that he may be further strengthened. Question
- 15:22Speaker 1: one hundred seventy three. May any who profess the faith
- 15:26Speaker 1: and desire to come to the Lord's Supper be kept
- 15:29Speaker 1: from it? Answer? Such as are found to be ignorant
- 15:33Speaker 1: or scandalous, notwithstanding their profession of the faith and desire
- 15:37Speaker 1: to come to the Lord's Supper, may and ought to
- 15:40Speaker 1: be kept from that sacrament. By the power which Christ
- 15:43Speaker 1: hath left in his church until they receive instruction and
- 15:47Speaker 1: manifest their reformation. Question one hundred seventy four What is
- 15:54Speaker 1: required of them that received the Sacrament of the Lord's
- 15:57Speaker 1: Supper in the time of the administration of it? Answer?
- 16:01Speaker 1: It is required of them that receive the sacrament of
- 16:04Speaker 1: the Lord's Supper, that, during the time of the administration
- 16:08Speaker 1: of it, with all holy reverence and attention, they wait
- 16:12Speaker 1: upon God in that ordinance, diligently observe the sacramental elements
- 16:16Speaker 1: and actions, heedfully discern the Lord's body, and affectionately meditate
- 16:21Speaker 1: on his death and sufferings, and thereby stir up themselves
- 16:25Speaker 1: to a vigorous exercise of their graces, in judging themselves
- 16:30Speaker 1: and sorrowing for sin, in earnest, hungering and thirsting after Christ,
- 16:35Speaker 1: feeding on him by faith, receiving of His fullness, trusting
- 16:39Speaker 1: in his merits, rejoicing in his love, giving thanks for
- 16:43Speaker 1: His grace, in renewing of their covenant with God, and
- 16:47Speaker 1: love to all the saints. Question one hundred seventy five
- 16:53Speaker 1: What is the duty of Christians after they have received
- 16:56Speaker 1: the sacrament of the Lord's Supper? Answer? The duty of Christians,
- 17:01Speaker 1: after they have received the sacrament of the Lord's Supper
- 17:04Speaker 1: is seriously to consider how they have behaved themselves therein
- 17:08Speaker 1: and with what success. If they find quickening and comfort,
- 17:13Speaker 1: to bless God, for it beg the continuance of it,
- 17:16Speaker 1: watch against relapses, fulfill their vows, and encourage themselves to
- 17:21Speaker 1: a frequent attendance on that ordinance. But if they find
- 17:24Speaker 1: no present benefit, more exactly to review their preparation to
- 17:29Speaker 1: and carriage at the sacrament in both which if they
- 17:33Speaker 1: can approve themselves to God and their own consciences, they
- 17:37Speaker 1: are to wait for the fruit of it in due time.
- 17:40Speaker 1: But if they see they have failed in either, they
- 17:43Speaker 1: are to be humbled and to attend upon it afterwards
- 17:46Speaker 1: with more care and diligence. Question one hundred seventy six,
- 17:52Speaker 1: wherein do the sacraments of Baptism and the Lord's Supper agree? Answer?
- 17:58Speaker 1: The sacraments of Baptism and the Lord's Supper agree in
- 18:02Speaker 1: that the author of both is God, the spiritual part
- 18:05Speaker 1: of both is Christ, and his benefits. Both our seals
- 18:09Speaker 1: of the same Covenant are to be dispensed by ministers
- 18:12Speaker 1: of the Gospel and by none other. And to be
- 18:15Speaker 1: continued in the Church of Christ until his second coming.
- 18:20Speaker 1: Question one hundred seventy seven, wherein do the sacraments of
- 18:24Speaker 1: baptism and the Lord's Supper differ? Answer? The sacraments of
- 18:29Speaker 1: Baptism and the Lord's Supper differ in that Baptism is
- 18:33Speaker 1: to be administered but once with water, to be a
- 18:36Speaker 1: sign and seal of our regeneration and in grafting into Christ,
- 18:40Speaker 1: and that even to infants. Whereas the Lord's Supper is
- 18:44Speaker 1: to be administered often in the elements of bread and wine,
- 18:48Speaker 1: to represent and exhibit Christ as spiritual nourishment to the soul,
- 18:53Speaker 1: and to confirm our continuance in growth in Him. And
- 18:56Speaker 1: that only to such as are of years and ability
- 18:59Speaker 1: to examine themselves. Question one hundred seventy eight What is prayer? Answer?
- 19:08Speaker 1: Prayer is an offering up of our desires unto God
- 19:11Speaker 1: in the name of Christ, by the help of His Spirit,
- 19:14Speaker 1: with confession of our sins and thankful acknowledgment of His mercies.
- 19:19Speaker 1: Question one hundred seventy nine Are we to pray unto
- 19:23Speaker 1: God only? Answer? God only being able to search our hearts,
- 19:28Speaker 1: hear the requests, pardon the sins, and fulfill the desires
- 19:32Speaker 1: of all, and only to be believed in and worshiped
- 19:35Speaker 1: with religious worship. Prayer, which is the special part thereof,
- 19:40Speaker 1: is to be made by all to Him alone and
- 19:42Speaker 1: to none other. Question one hundred eighty What is it
- 19:47Speaker 1: to pray in the name of Christ? Answer? To pray
- 19:52Speaker 1: in the name of Christ is in obedience to His
- 19:54Speaker 1: command and in confidence of his promises to ask mercy
- 19:58Speaker 1: for his sake, not by bear mentioning of His name,
- 20:02Speaker 1: but by drying our encouragement to pray, and our boldness,
- 20:05Speaker 1: strength and hope of acceptance in prayer from Christ and
- 20:09Speaker 1: his mediation. Question one hundred eighty one. Why are we
- 20:15Speaker 1: to pray in the name of Christ? Answer? The sinfulness
- 20:19Speaker 1: of man and his distance from God, by reason thereof
- 20:23Speaker 1: being so great as that we can have no access
- 20:26Speaker 1: into His presence without a mediator, and there being none
- 20:30Speaker 1: in heaven or earth appointed to or fit for that
- 20:33Speaker 1: glorious work but Christ alone. We are to pray in
- 20:37Speaker 1: no other name but His only. Question one hundred eighty two,
- 20:42Speaker 1: How doth the Spirit help us to pray? Answer? We,
- 20:47Speaker 1: not knowing what to pray for as we ought, the
- 20:50Speaker 1: Spirit helpeth our infirmities, by enabling us to understand both
- 20:54Speaker 1: for whom and what and how prayer is to be made,
- 20:58Speaker 1: and by working and quickening in our hearts, although not
- 21:02Speaker 1: in all persons, nor at all times, in the same measure,
- 21:06Speaker 1: those apprehensions, affections, and graces which are requisite for the
- 21:10Speaker 1: right performance of that duty. Question one hundred eighty three.
- 21:15Speaker 1: For whom are we to pray? Answer? We are to
- 21:19Speaker 1: pray for the whole Church of Christ upon earth, for
- 21:22Speaker 1: magistrates and ministers, for ourselves, our brethren, yea, our enemies,
- 21:28Speaker 1: and for all sorts of men living or that shall
- 21:31Speaker 1: live hereafter, but not for the dead, nor for those
- 21:34Speaker 1: that are known to have sinned the sin unto death.
- 21:39Speaker 1: Question one hundred eighty four. For what things are we
- 21:42Speaker 1: to pray? Answer? We are to pray for all things
- 21:47Speaker 1: tending to the glory of God, the welfare of the Church,
- 21:50Speaker 1: our own or other's good, but not for anything that
- 21:53Speaker 1: is unlawful. Question one hundred eighty five. How are we
- 21:58Speaker 1: to pray? Answer? We are to pray with an awful
- 22:03Speaker 1: apprehension of the majesty of God and deep sense of
- 22:06Speaker 1: our own unworthiness, necessities and sins, with penitent, thankful and
- 22:11Speaker 1: enlarged hearts, with understanding, faith, sincerity, fervency, love, and perseverance,
- 22:19Speaker 1: waiting upon him with humble submission to his will. Question
- 22:24Speaker 1: one hundred eighty six What rule hath God given for
- 22:27Speaker 1: our direction in the duty of prayer? Answer? The whole
- 22:32Speaker 1: word of God is of use to direct us in
- 22:34Speaker 1: the duty of prayer. But the special rule of direction
- 22:38Speaker 1: is that form of prayer which our Savior Christ taught
- 22:40Speaker 1: his disciples, commonly called the Lord's prayer. Question one hundred
- 22:46Speaker 1: eighty seven, How is the Lord's prayer to be used? Answer?

- 28:52Speaker 1: us with peace and joy in giving us daily more
- 28:56Speaker 1: and more assurance of forgiveness, which we are the rather

- 30:08Speaker 1: that God would so overrule the world and all in it,
- 30:12Speaker 1: subdue the flesh, and restrain Satan, order all things, bestow
- 30:16Speaker 1: and bless all means of grace, and quicken us to
- 30:20Speaker 1: watchfulness in the use of them, that we and all
- 30:23Speaker 1: His people may, by His providence be kept from being
- 30:26Speaker 1: tempted to sin, or if tempted, that by His spirit

- 31:08Speaker 1: is the Kingdom and the power and the glory Forever, Amen,
- 31:12Speaker 1: teacheth Us to enforce our petitions with arguments which are
- 31:16Speaker 1: to be taken not from any worthiness in ourselves or
- 31:19Speaker 1: in any other creature, but from God, and with our
- 31:23Speaker 1: prayers to join praises ascribing to God alone eternal sovereignty,
- 31:28Speaker 1: omnipotency and glorious excellency in regard whereof He is able
- 31:34Speaker 1: and willing to help us. So we by faith are
- 31:37Speaker 1: emboldened to plead with Him that he would, and quietly
- 31:41Speaker 1: to rely upon Him that he will fulfill our requests.
