- 0:00Believe the Mets are going to give him a significant They're
- 0:02going to have a ton of money to spend.
- 0:04Why not put it in one of the top three offensive players in the
- 0:07league? We're going to be looking at
- 0:17Aaron. Judge.
- 0:17And saying that he can't. Win the big game, Michael
- 0:20Jordan. Said I played 82 games.
- 0:23You don't see the one doing that.
- 0:24A game where you got to go before.
- 0:27I told you, giant feet, Saquon Barkley at this
- 1:28Let's do it. You're listening to Java and the
- 1:31mouth. Mouth.
- 1:39Wow, Welcome. We are back with another episode
- 1:45of Jabba in the mouth. No, it's not Errol that you're
- 1:48listening to. It's me, Aaron Fishman, our
- 1:51executive producer, normally filling in as host.
- 1:54Tonight, we still got Speedy PD and the one and only Jabba
- 1:58Chamberlain live on location out in Nebraska, the site of the
- 2:03College World Series hockey. And that one's over, boys.
- 2:06The Florida Panthers win the Stanley Cup and go back-to-back
- 2:12as champs. The Panthers beat the Oilers 5
- 2:14to 1 in game six of the Stanley Cup to win their back-to-back
- 2:17Champions championship. Sam Reinhardt scored four goals
- 2:21in the game, the most in the Stanley Cup clinching game since
- 2:241922. That's 100 and three years.
- 2:28Sam Bennett won the con Smythe scoring 15 goals in the NHL
- 2:32playoffs, including five in the Stanley Cup.
- 2:34Brad Marshan had six in the Stanley Cup, most by any player
- 2:37since SA Tekin in with the Oilers in 1988.
- 2:41Think SA Tekinen at that point. His career had about 11 teeth as
- 2:44well, and therefore Stanley Cup wins.
- 2:47The Panthers outscored the Oilers 21 to 8.
- 2:50Six of the last 10 Stanley Cups have now been won by teams going
- 2:53back-to-back, with the Penguins doing in 2016 and 17, the
- 2:56Lightning in 20 and 21. Now the Panthers these last two
- 3:00years. A Canadian team has not won the
- 3:02Stanley Cup now for 32 seasons. My, Oh my, this game went
- 3:10exactly how we said it was going to go.
- 3:12Speedy. We came on, talked about how
- 3:15Game 5 went. It felt like all the momentum
- 3:19had gone to the Panthers and the biggest reason was goaltending.
- 3:25We went back to Stewart Skinner in Game 6, wasn't it?
- 3:30Just wasn't it? He did not have.
- 3:32You can't just snap out of a funk against any team.
- 3:37Look, some teams are slump Breakers.
- 3:39We know this. You're going to be able to, in a
- 3:41regular season, you have a bad stretch for a little bit and
- 3:45then you go and you play the San Jose Sharks and you get back
- 3:48into it, you know? That Snugs team.
- 3:52Snug the Cat Oh yeah, Snug You can come in and tell us all
- 3:56about Joe Thornton's great career or something like that.
- 3:59But if you want to call in, I think we are going to try to
- 4:02have callers. Speedy I at some point we need
- 4:04to figure out a good system. You're going to have to go on
- 4:07stream yard with audio only. I think Speedy, if we can get a
- 4:10guy like Snug the Cat, a tremendous fan of the show and
- 4:14guest, it would be wonderful for you to talk about the five good
- 4:18players the San Jose Sharks have ever had.
- 4:20Now, let's move on to this year's great team and again, the
- 4:25Florida Panthers. Reinhardt had some words about
- 4:29the Buffalo Sabres after the game.
- 4:32Speed, I don't know if you noticed that I went to College
- 4:34in Buffalo And look, as as endearing as the Buffalo Bills
- 4:38fans are in football is as obnoxious as the same people are
- 4:42about hockey. I have to tell you, I did not
- 4:45enjoy the Sabres fans all that much, but the Sabres, they kind
- 4:49of treated Sam Reinhardt pretty disrespectfully.
- 4:53Speedy, I I think you need to give me a little bit more of a
- 4:55history lesson about that whole breakup after he was drafted
- 4:59second overall was supposed to be the future of the franchise,
- 5:02a couple of those in Buffalo history.
- 5:03Yeah, I was going to say there's a, there's a list of them that
- 5:05goes that goes way back. And I mean, there's a certain
- 5:08Jack Eichel that I remember that also had that title, also was a
- 5:11second overall pick and and they they gave away both of those
- 5:16guys. And again, it it got ugly really
- 5:19badly and with the ownership and with the front office, I forget
- 5:22the G Ms. name at the time, but they they let it drag on for a
- 5:26while. Sam Reinhardt really felt he was
- 5:28just that badly disrespected. And Buffalo's had this track
- 5:32record with these top 10 picks for a while where these guys
- 5:35have not developed there as a result.
- 5:37And they're resorting to these one for one player swaps as
- 5:40well. And one of the things I was
- 5:42bringing up to you yesterday when we were talking was the
- 5:45fact that there were a lot of analysts and, and coaches there.
- 5:49They were taking shots at him when he when he left in first
- 5:51year with Florida in 2021, right off the short season.
- 5:54So a lot of people weren't great yet.
- 5:56It was off the there was a 2 month break or something after
- 5:59the the 56 game season. And a lot of guys are rusty at
- 6:02the beginning of the year, 06 games.
- 6:04He has no point. So all of a sudden, no, this
- 6:05contract's going to be a bust for Florida.
- 6:07And yeah, that analyst certainly eating his words.
- 6:12I don't want to say any names. I we have, we've had one on the
- 6:16show that I'm actually trying to get Outback on the show as well.
- 6:18Rob Ray. Oh well, we can.
- 6:20We can make his him eat his words when we talk.
- 6:22To him, no, no, no, it wasn't, it wasn't.
- 6:23It wasn't Rob, but I'm saying. He might get Rob Ray.
- 6:26Rob Lay. He's been on a few times.
- 6:28He's a legend in Buffalo, yeah. He is a Buffalo legend.
- 6:31When I was in college there, I went to the University of
- 6:33Buffalo many years ago now, but there was a bar I used to go to
- 6:37at the best of wings I've ever had, I think they're called the
- 6:40Amherst Ale House was Crown Royal BBQ Wings.
- 6:43They were like sharp hit broiled.
- 6:45It's just the best wings ever. He his like jersey was up over
- 6:50there. Pictures of him there, like he's
- 6:52like this celebrity in Buffalo. So it's just just like they
- 6:55really love their hockey there. They love their Bills, but they
- 6:58really love their Sabres. Yeah, I love, I love to try to
- 7:01get him on again. I last month he said he was
- 7:02interested. I haven't heard from him since,
- 7:04but yeah, I don't think he's ever been on with you, but he's
- 7:07been on with us a couple times in the past fast.
- 7:09And yeah, I definitely would like to get him back on.
- 7:10But whoever the analyst was and what, I just hope it wasn't him,
- 7:14but I maybe he knows him. So I don't want to throw him
- 7:16under the bus too badly the the Sabres analyst.
- 7:18But nevertheless, like, yeah, yeah, that's how toxic it was
- 7:20and that's how toxic these teams can be.
- 7:22And it just like there's a reason bad teams stay bad
- 7:25sometimes for a while. And Buffalo has the longest
- 7:29active playoff drought among any NHL team, I think the second
- 7:33longest in all pro sports after The Jets.
- 7:35And like, there's a reason for that.
- 7:37And they've had so many good players, good prospects that
- 7:41have come into their system and not develop as well as as they
- 7:44should. Darlene has been the one bright
- 7:46spot. And Tage Thompson, since they
- 7:48traded for him from Saint Louis, when he's been healthy, has been
- 7:50great. But they just can't build a team
- 7:53that way. And then on the other side,
- 7:55Florida tried a different philosophy where they were
- 7:57talented for years. They were making the playoffs
- 8:00pretty consistently. Probably the last decade or so,
- 8:03I think they had one. They had one dot, I think 2018
- 8:07or 2019, where they missed the playoffs.
- 8:10Ever since, Ever since then, they've been consistently in it,
- 8:12but they never win playoffs. They never won playoff series.
- 8:14Even their presence trophy year. They end up losing to the
- 8:17Lightning. Lightning or very talented team
- 8:19at the time, fine. But this was an identity that
- 8:22needed guys like Sam Reinhart to change it and it's position
- 8:26versatility among centers playing wing and wings playing
- 8:30center and vice versa. And it makes it very tough on
- 8:33opposing teams to be able to do that.
- 8:35And again, Edmonton was one of those teams that I thought had
- 8:38enough when it came to the bigger wingers, when it came to
- 8:42the center depth they have that maybe they could expose it this
- 8:44time. It did not make a difference
- 8:46when it came to Reinhardt finally getting it going at the
- 8:48end of that series, Bennett getting it going.
- 8:50You won the constant Smythe for a reason.
- 8:52And actually Bennett played very well even before he was traded
- 8:55to Florida from Calgary against Edmonton.
- 8:57Like it was a something that's a thorn in their side against that
- 9:00core. So they knew how to build that
- 9:02kind of team to counter what the other.
- 9:04Obviously I don't think anything expected to play Edmonton
- 9:06back-to-back. But those other teams in the
- 9:08West that had the good center depth, Vegas couldn't they beat
- 9:11Vegas, had trouble or they had trouble with Vegas the first
- 9:14year, but they were an eighth seed.
- 9:15That's just them getting to the Cup was that spark?
- 9:17And it was just a wondering of can they keep it going to get it
- 9:20back because we've seen it with OK, the Kings when they won the
- 9:23Stanley Cup, they were an eighth seed.
- 9:24They got back two years later and obviously beat the Rangers.
- 9:26Unfortunately. Then we also saw on the other
- 9:28end, Nashville, they won it as an eighth seed, got to the Cup
- 9:32and fell off after that. So you don't know which
- 9:34perspective it was going on with Florida, but now you're building
- 9:37a sustainable core with that group that wants to stay there
- 9:42and defensive system that's rotated around all these
- 9:45different guys. Ekblad and obviously Forsling
- 9:48are the core, but they've rotated in now, Nate Schmidt and
- 9:51Seth Jones and last year they had a lot of other veteran guys
- 9:55that they brought in. They've wrote all this system
- 9:59has just worked really well to get that kind of system to work
- 10:03with Florida. And it starts with Sam Reinhart,
- 10:04like you're saying, getting those guys, Chuck buying in when
- 10:07they trade it for him at the time from the Flames.
- 10:10Just guys that really have that extra post season style of game
- 10:14to them. And it's bold when teams do
- 10:16this, but in hockey, you need to do it the way that Florida's
- 10:18doing it, and a lot of these other teams have not recovered
- 10:21from it and have not learned from it.
- 10:23Got to talk about the captain of the team a little bit, right?
- 10:26We got to talk about Barkov, Barkhov, sulky trophy winner,
- 10:30right? The guy is the best defensive
- 10:32forward. We saw the beginning of the
- 10:33series. He was having a lot of trouble
- 10:36getting. I mean, we did save your tears.
- 10:37I took Barkhov and he had negative points in the first
- 10:40three games for me and it cost me my save my the last save our
- 10:43save your tears. We can't really do save your
- 10:45tears with baseball guys. We're going to try to figure out
- 10:48a way to bring it back. We might have to wait for
- 10:49football season, but it's been a lot of fun with it.
- 10:52Maybe if I could figure out a way to do a baseball, we'll do
- 10:54it. But me and Speedy will workshop
- 10:56that one. But Barkhov last game in the
- 10:59series to assist +3 by the end of the series, that guy just
- 11:06wears you down. Even when he's playing against
- 11:08literally the best players in the world.
- 11:10He finds a way to be a plus player.
- 11:12He finds a way to get on the board, and he finds a way to
- 11:15shut you down. Because if you look at the Euler
- 11:18stats in this last game, what did we get out of McDavid -4?
- 11:24McDavid was a -, 4 in this game. Corey Perry, ageless wonder -4.
- 11:31Now on his fifth Stanley Cup losing team in the last six
- 11:33years, True. Including the light on dry sidle
- 11:37-4. I just named two of the greatest
- 11:40players in the league and someone who's, I mean, Corey
- 11:44Perry, Hall of Famer. I would put him in I I could see
- 11:47why people argue against him. I would.
- 11:48Put him in, he has some he has some personal stuff, but you
- 11:52know, as far as like on the ice, he's his stats are right up
- 11:55there, right. So it's that's how good they are
- 11:59and they got shut down by this team.
- 12:01So now if we were to like even just bringing up Ryan Art
- 12:03because of the great game, but would he even be like, what if
- 12:08you were to rank the top players on this Florida team?
- 12:11Is he in the top five C5? Yeah, that's a good problem to
- 12:16have, basically. That's the thing about this
- 12:18Florida team. Yeah, this is one of the most
- 12:20stacked hockey teams I've ever. Yeah.
- 12:22One of the things that I think this year that because during
- 12:26the eastern part of the playoffs, they obviously they
- 12:29dominated two series and five games, but even the Tampa games
- 12:32were very close a lot of the time.
- 12:34The defense for Florida, it didn't seem like they were as
- 12:36good this year. So like, oh, are they actually
- 12:39going to do it again? A lot of people were picking
- 12:41Carolina over Florida. They end up being the betting
- 12:44favorites at one point, which it never made sense to me because
- 12:46this is the worst year for the Metropolitan Division, I think
- 12:48since the divisions realigned. So they had like a cakewalk to
- 12:52the Eastern Conference finals, whereas Florida had to play
- 12:54Tampa, Toronto. This was the best year.
- 12:56Toronto, I think well-rounded team on paper.
- 12:59I think they would have went to the Cup if they beat Florida.
- 13:01But obviously in classic Maple Leafs fashion, they blew it in
- 13:04Game 7 and get absolutely steamrolled.
- 13:07Blew A2, nothing lead. Blew A2, nothing lead in game
- 13:10three and fell off a Cliff after that.
- 13:11But what it was was the West. I thought overall as a
- 13:15conference was just so much better that was Florida ready
- 13:18for that level of competition. Edmonton steamrolled Dallas and
- 13:22steamrolled Vegas. Two really good teams in five
- 13:24games and it looked like, oh, is this the team that had the
- 13:27comeback prowess because Florida, what we were saying
- 13:31last year, this was a great team in playing ahead and they have
- 13:34so many different players that could play into that role.
- 13:37But like what you're saying is Reinhart the 5th best player or
- 13:406th best player, It's a good problem to have.
- 13:42Maybe he is like Ekblad when he's healthy, probably is
- 13:45better, but he's not 100% healthy.
- 13:47And then you're looking at now adding Marsh and I think Bark.
- 13:50Yeah, let's go through. I got a list of them so.
- 13:52Barkhart, like you said with his defence.
- 13:55Could Shuck Marsh and Porzling? Seth Jones had an amazing
- 14:05playoffs for the record to throw that out.
- 14:07Porzling. Around for a while, Porzling is
- 14:09one that doesn't get as much attention because he's like a
- 14:11stay at home defensive guy, but he's very good.
- 14:14He's he you know what He he's just he moves the puck well and
- 14:18he's never at a position and he's physical and he's like the
- 14:22perfect guy to pair with an offensive defenseman.
- 14:26He is he's the guy that the Rangers have needed forever.
- 14:29Like the to play with Adam Fox. Like this is the type of guy, a
- 14:34guy like Forsling that you want. He's just always there like a
- 14:37rock, but also can set people up very well, you know, it's not
- 14:42like. It's hard to find those guys
- 14:44with that much skating ability anymore because a lot of those
- 14:47guys are trying to be used as an offensive guy now to like Fox,
- 14:51not the Foxes defense is bad, but if you were to consider top
- 14:54ten, top 15 defensive defenseman, I don't think we're
- 14:57putting Fox in that list just on defense alone.
- 15:00Like Vegas has a lot of those guys with Theodore with white
- 15:03cloud. Florida has with Forestling.
- 15:06I think you you don't really have a lot of those guys that
- 15:08are just defensive skaters that just do to that very well.
- 15:11Dallas has a lot of them on their roster.
- 15:14That's why I I was picking them to win at all.
- 15:16Like I thought they had enough. Like I'm curious if they were to
- 15:18play, if they would have made a difference.
- 15:20I don't know. But nevertheless, Florida has
- 15:22all those guys that could play their roles really well and all
- 15:26the forwards. The top five forwards don't have
- 15:28to play one style. Barkov, when he knew he was
- 15:30struggling on offense, pass the puck a lot more.
- 15:34Marsha and got the skate. I got the space, got the
- 15:36skating. He scored a bunch of goals as a
- 15:38result. I wasn't sure if he could, but
- 15:40he ended up making it work. And like you're saying, Kashuk
- 15:42could play other roles. He's had the two goals in the
- 15:44one game, but he could play other roles.
- 15:46That's the team you want to have to be able to build a
- 15:49well-rounded forward identity that I don't think we've seen
- 15:52from that much versatility in a long time.
- 15:54It's always say you build with three centers and you could make
- 15:57the wings work later. You have to have a good enough.
- 16:00I mean, we didn't even mention Speedy, Lundell and Verhey.
- 16:03I like Lundell a lot so. Lundell is a really, really
- 16:06excellent player and he is, I mean, he would play second line
- 16:14at worst on pretty much every team.
- 16:18They don't need him to. They they're incredible.
- 16:21I, it's just amazing to me. I mean, even their fourth line
- 16:24guys, you got a guy like Lucy Ryan, you know, he just, I mean.
- 16:29Another. Another one for Buffalo sounded
- 16:31out. Another one for Buffalo.
- 16:32Gotta love. It what a shocker, right?
- 16:37It's amazing how Buffalo just can't get it done.
- 16:40They're just like so impatient. They just, they love their
- 16:43hockey so much. It gets in the way.
- 16:46That's the only thing I can attribute it to because as as
- 16:48passionate as they are, and I know how passionate Buffalo fans
- 16:51are, and if I had to say there was a second team that I would
- 16:54root for in in football, it would be the Bills.
- 16:56Is there AFC And they we don't play them all that often.
- 17:00But I mean, I really have one team.
- 17:02I root for it. But I do like Buffalo because I
- 17:04went to school there and I do appreciate their fans.
- 17:06They're nuts, but they're also not so nuts in a smart way about
- 17:10hockey. Unfortunately.
- 17:11They are really struggling up there and now they're guys are
- 17:14winning cup after cup that they should have held on to.
- 17:17It's just embarrassing. Yeah, I got a full.
- 17:20Fan I'd be embarrassed. You got you got Jack Eichel with
- 17:22Vegas and then Reinhard and Lisa Ryan in the last two years.
- 17:28All right, so it looks like I may have forgotten to put up a
- 17:36graphic for the next 1, so I'm going to work on that Speedy.
- 17:40I want you to tell to tell me what while I'm fixing this out
- 17:44last thing about hockey, we have the Panthers with the
- 17:49back-to-back. We have the lightning with the
- 17:51back-to-back. We have try to go to other.
- 17:54There's the Penguins. Have done it now back-to-back
- 17:56twice since the 90s, right? Yep, the Penguins did it
- 18:00back-to-back and I think Detroit did it back-to-back in the late
- 18:0390s, I'm pretty sure. Late 90s OK, where are we
- 18:07ranking this Florida Panthers team in the in the pantheon?
- 18:11And do they have the ability to bring it back?
- 18:13Because you know you're not going to Marsh and next year,
- 18:15right, he's going to be a free agent and they already fit him
- 18:19in with the cap to in. These, yeah, I think they're
- 18:21going to prioritize trying to pay Bennett 1st and I think
- 18:23they'll find a way. But yeah, Marsh and is going to
- 18:26be a little tougher for them to hold.
- 18:28It's interesting though, because I think Tampa's raw talent was
- 18:33really good, like their front end talent, the system that they
- 18:36played offensively was so creative.
- 18:39And then obviously the the Detroit, I think the Detroit
- 18:42team of the 90s, like I think that talent wise probably is the
- 18:45best one of those five teams you listed.
- 18:47Pittsburgh was kind of like a a star and like you filled some
- 18:50guys in type teams. That's what I was describing.
- 18:51I don't think they were as overly talented as Tampa or
- 18:54Florida or Detroit, but they made it work.
- 18:56Obviously with the back-to-back in 16 and 17 and then the
- 18:59Penguins in the 90s, obviously they had a lot of talent too.
- 19:02They were just a little older. What I think Florida is
- 19:04different with is the style that they do it at and that's why I
- 19:09think other guys can be adaptable to come into the
- 19:12system a lot more, which I don't think you can necessarily say
- 19:16with all those other teams definitively how many.
- 19:18Like after the Penguins won the back-to-back Cups, they tried
- 19:21that kind of philosophy for three more years and couldn't
- 19:23get anything to work in that system.
- 19:25After Kessel retired, they tried to bring in Ricardo Cal as a
- 19:28good player, but they really haven't had much besides that.
- 19:31And Tampa recently, they've tried good traded line
- 19:35acquisitions that have been nice players, but it hasn't worked as
- 19:37well for them in the playoffs where I think the Florida, you
- 19:40bring in Niko Mikola, Nate Schmidt and that defensive
- 19:43system on offense, you fill in these various wingers and these
- 19:48hybrid forwards and it just works for them in a system that
- 19:51I think can be sustainable. You can't have the same players
- 19:54doing it all the time because they'll get worn out eventually.
- 19:56But it's a system that definitely has a lot better of a
- 20:00chance to still stay strong because of the way that they can
- 20:04fill versatile players in the system.
- 20:07That's why I I think the talent wise advantage goes to the
- 20:10Lightning, But I think the postseason identity wise, you
- 20:13could see Florida surpassing that.
- 20:16Look the the Panthers have a chance to do something that has
- 20:19not been done. Has it ever been done?
- 20:20Speedy was just the Canadians like way back in the day.
- 20:23Where is a three peat. It was the well the Islanders
- 20:27did. 4. Edmonton Edmonton did 3,
- 20:31Edmonton did three in a row and I think they did 5 assists.
- 20:35So I so that's what it was. So we have since it's going back
- 20:38to when goalies stood up, is what we're saying.
- 20:41When they played, we're going back to the 80s when Gretzky
- 20:44scored a hundred goals, right? But when it was a little
- 20:48different game. This is this is an impressive
- 20:51team. We'll see what they do in the
- 20:53offseason. If it's me and I am need a
- 20:56coach, I'd want to know who's on the staff of Paul Maurice that I
- 21:01can poach to put that system in with my guys wherever I'm going
- 21:06because that what wherever, whatever team I own, that would
- 21:10be what I would do. You want to run this system.
- 21:13This system is being proven to be an effective playoff hockey
- 21:19system. Congrats to the Panthers.
- 21:21We've got one segment left. We're going to dive right now
- 21:24inside baseball. Now let's go deep, deep inside
- 21:28what I am exciting. This is inside baseball.
- 21:34And here we go, man. We're going inside baseball.
- 21:37Got a few stories to wrap up the night, and I also created a
- 21:40pretty cool little graphic here and a list that we'll get into
- 21:44in a little bit. So here we are.
- 21:47Yes, the Yankees win. The Yankees win speedy.
- 21:50By the way, little known fact one was here's a little trivia
- 21:54question for you because we were talking about John Sterling
- 21:56earlier tonight when we had Gary Phillips on what was the first
- 22:00usage of the famous call? The Yankees win.
- 22:04The Yankees win because I can tell you when it was, I don't
- 22:07think. I know this one the first time.
- 22:11The first time he did it and then everyone loved it so much
- 22:14he never stopped doing it. I bet he does it in the shower
- 22:17still to this day. Yeah, no, I could believe that
- 22:20to an extent. No, I don't know the exact one.
- 22:22I'll guess it was probably, I'll guess like an ALCS in the 70s.
- 22:26I'll go. Off No, it he wasn't.
- 22:28He actually wasn't doing it back then.
- 22:30It was the 96th World Series win.
- 22:33It was the 96 World Series win. So he was actually doing the
- 22:37game. This color man Michael K.
- 22:40So actually they were together for a number of years and I
- 22:43thought they were excellent when they were together.
- 22:45That was my favorite radio group grouping I I've ever listened
- 22:48to. They really played off each
- 22:50other very well. Michael Kay is the lead man.
- 22:52Without him. It's not the same to me.
- 22:54But obviously still, you know, I don't know.
- 22:56Errol doesn't really care for him.
- 22:58No, Jabba has some opinions on Michael Kay.
- 23:00But when it was Sterling and Michael Kay back in the 90s,
- 23:03that was a real great, great boost.
- 23:05But let's get into the Yankees right now.
- 23:07They just broke that slide. Yankees snap A6 game losing
- 23:10streak. The first four games they didn't
- 23:11score single run. All right, They were,
- 23:14absolutely. We got a couple runs in the next
- 23:16couple of games. But six games and they lost two
- 23:20teams that were hovering around 500 in the Red Sox and the
- 23:24Angels. Both of the teams I believe are
- 23:26either a game over or a game under 500 right now.
- 23:30They snapped it today, 7/3 in the rain.
- 23:33Salvage the series with the Angels.
- 23:36We heard what Gary Phillips said.
- 23:38He said that no one's panicking. Jabba, do you do you believe him
- 23:42on that one? Are guys kind of getting a
- 23:44little, you know, a little flustered here in June or is it
- 23:47really such a long season? Doesn't matter.
- 23:51I honestly, I don't, I don't you don't panic this early and I
- 23:59don't, I don't, I don't think they will because they have a
- 24:05guy that won't let them panic. And I'm, I'm not just talking
- 24:10about Boonie, I'm not talking about judge.
- 24:13It's like they have guys around them that won't panic, right?
- 24:19And so they have to have that. So we'll we'll see what happens.
- 24:26That's a long season. I mean, it was bound to happen,
- 24:29right? You know and and.
- 24:30See, it's going to happen. It has to.
- 24:34It's such a long season. They're going to hit a slide.
- 24:36Judge his batting average, speedy has dropped into the
- 24:39three 60s. Now, obviously he wasn't going
- 24:42to be able to maintain that crazy pace.
- 24:44But as we get into the All Star break, which is coming up in a
- 24:49couple of weeks, the Yankees are still positioned in first place
- 24:53despite this slide. What do you think?
- 24:55You think the Yankees are still going to run away with this
- 24:58division, Speedy? Seems that way because again,
- 25:00obviously the Red Sox now trading Devers, you can't expect
- 25:02them to do much unless they just rally around everything.
- 25:06I am obviously we've talked about the Orioles
- 25:07underperforming all year. So you're yeah, you're really
- 25:10dealing with as long as the Yankees don't have like maybe
- 25:12two more of these types of slides after the All Star break,
- 25:16you're probably looking at them being fine to at least be the
- 25:19number, maybe the number two seed in the American League.
- 25:21I know the Astros are playing very well right now too.
- 25:24So and obviously the Tigers have been probably the best team in
- 25:26the American League all year. So it's one of those things
- 25:29where the Yankees, I think the more of the concern is trying to
- 25:32get those young guys going again in that in the back end of that
- 25:35line up that started. They they've all had their
- 25:38sparks throughout the year, but just more consistency will be
- 25:40key judging Goldschmidt. They're going to do their thing
- 25:43at the top of the order. But we always say, do the
- 25:45Yankees have enough lineup depth to be able to make it work in
- 25:48the postseason? That's where those young guys
- 25:50love to come in, including obviously Dominguez that we
- 25:52talked about maybe trading or obviously Ben Rice has been kind
- 25:55of up and down and recently we're just talking about with
- 25:57Volpe. Yes, certainly an interesting
- 26:03trade deadline period. I think we're going to see with
- 26:05the Yankees, see if what they do, if they make a move or not.
- 26:08So we talked earlier about the Lakers being sold for $10
- 26:14billion. Here's the other side of the
- 26:18spectrum. How about a team that nobody
- 26:20comes to watch? The Tampa Bay Rays are valued at
- 26:251.7 billion, more than five times less than the Lakers.
- 26:31That seems like a low number for a baseball franchise, but I I
- 26:36mean personally, I spent three years down in Tampa, Java.
- 26:39You spent more, you played against them that.
- 26:42Stadium sucks I I've lived there for a long time so I.
- 26:48Why can't they get fans to go? Well, you, you got it.
- 26:52You got to understand, like I've, I've got really good
- 26:54friends around the Florida area, right?
- 27:03But it's like if if I got to drive an hour and a half, they
- 27:09don't want to because the Rays aren't in Tampa, they're in
- 27:14Saint Pete. So I mean, it's it's 30 minutes.
- 27:19Yeah, fish, you know this. And as you said, but I honestly,
- 27:24I don't, I don't think they'll ever be able to unless they
- 27:30actually go to Tampa. But 1.7 is what they are because
- 27:40I love the Trop. But at the same time, it was
- 27:44used for so many things where it was never really part of just
- 27:52baseball, just baseball. Jabba I, when I taught down
- 27:56there, our high school graduation, I think the middle
- 27:59school graduation I was at too. They were both at the tribe.
- 28:03They were both there. And yeah, so they viewed those
- 28:06things, but they like. They don't have high school
- 28:09graduation at Yankee Stadium. It doesn't.
- 28:11It doesn't. It doesn't make money.
- 28:13That's my point. It's such a strange thing.
- 28:16And like Speedy, you see the games, you just see empty seats,
- 28:20no matter how good they are. They've been the best team in
- 28:23the AL East and still don't really get fans.
- 28:27I remember going to a Rays Tigers game.
- 28:29They both teams weren't great that year, but I got seats right
- 28:32behind home plate, behind the meshing in those luxury, luxury
- 28:36seats that at Yankee Stadium. Those are going for five
- 28:38figures. I think I spent 50 bucks on that
- 28:43seat. I just don't understand why
- 28:47people, I mean, people love, love baseball in Florida.
- 28:52I mean, all of the pre preseason training, all the minor league
- 28:55teams, it's all down there. Everyone's there.
- 28:58Steinbrenner Field is across from where the Bucks play.
- 29:02It's right there. Well, it's it's now where the
- 29:04Rays are playing. And now where the Rays are
- 29:06playing, right, It's I, I just don't.
- 29:10I mean, at least I understand this year why they might not get
- 29:12a lot of fans because of the weirdness with the stadium
- 29:15playing at a Yankees facility right where the bunch of Yankees
- 29:18minor league teams also play. So it's not great.
- 29:22But just talking about the Trop, I, I don't get it.
- 29:26Now, Speedy, they're going to sell this team because I think
- 29:31they want to move this team. They've been trying not to, but
- 29:35the city doesn't want to pay up. Then they had that hurricane
- 29:38when they said they were going to.
- 29:39Now they can't. So it's going to take a few more
- 29:41years until it's even serviceable again.
- 29:44The Trop for them to play in. Don't you think the MLB wants
- 29:48them to get the team out of there now?
- 29:51Yeah, they're like you said too well-rounded of a team like well
- 29:54run like the small market well oiled machine for the last
- 29:58really seven years. They had their stretch in 2008
- 30:01to 2013 or so when they were very well run too.
- 30:04And for a team that's that well run and create develops players
- 30:10as well as they do like not being able to keep them and they
- 30:13finally get one they could keep. And he has all these issues with
- 30:17off the field and getting arrested and now all of a sudden
- 30:21it's going to be, yeah, now it's just going to be very hard for
- 30:23you. Just get an image in his
- 30:25baseball today where you're seeing all these really free
- 30:28spending teams like we talked about with the Dodgers earlier,
- 30:30with the deferred money, with the Mets with all the money
- 30:32they've spent, it's just very difficult to even just be a
- 30:35middle market team. So yeah, it seems inevitable
- 30:38that they're going to have to try something because it's just
- 30:41not working for them there. They're a good hockey community
- 30:44with the Lightning, the French Canadian population down there.
- 30:46They're pretty good with football.
- 30:48But again, just baseball, as good of a well run of the team
- 30:50they have been, it's just it's very difficult and there's
- 30:53enough southern locations if you want to stay southern where they
- 30:56could be like Nashville, where that could work.
- 30:59With all the good college baseball in Tennessee, you can
- 31:01get that kind of thing to work. We had one of the first guests
- 31:04we had during the pandemic was a guy who's Rick something that
- 31:08was trying to petition the MLB to Charlotte that something like
- 31:10that could work. There's enough southern markets
- 31:12where that could make it interesting for them to be able
- 31:16to move. And again, they're going to get
- 31:17a better fan base than they are in Tampa.
- 31:20It's just puzzling that fan base because they're so gung ho about
- 31:24their lightning and it's the same fans and they just don't
- 31:27show up for baseball. And, you know, it's a baseball
- 31:30state. It's just, it's just really
- 31:32tough to understand. I don't think Major League
- 31:33Baseball has figured it out yet either.
- 31:36So let's move on to the next one.
- 31:39Here's a fascinating story. And Nick Castillanos, this was a
- 31:43few days ago, he's benched by manager Rob Thompson for the
- 31:46following game after when he was pulled for defensive purposes
- 31:51late in the game, made some inappropriate comments towards
- 31:55his coach that I'm assuming and weren't taken so well.
- 32:00So he benched his ass. That's really fascinating.
- 32:04You don't see too much of that. You know, it was like real
- 32:07punishment for stepping out of line.
- 32:09And Rob Thompson, as you know, everyone thinks he's a really
- 32:12good manager. He was the Yankees bench coach
- 32:15for a very long time. And now, you know, he was with
- 32:18Girardi when they took over there and he's been there now
- 32:22and he's done well with that Phillies team.
- 32:24The fact that he's going to, he has the confidence in himself in
- 32:28the standing to go to like I would say, an aging former star.
- 32:32I don't I wouldn't call Castellanos a star anymore.
- 32:35And he's certainly not a good defensive player.
- 32:37He never was a great defensive player, right?
- 32:40So now that he's, you know, they're taking him out and
- 32:42laying the game. How dare you have anything to
- 32:44say to the manager. He's just trying to do what's
- 32:46right for the team and probably speedy.
- 32:48He's being told from up top, isn't he?
- 32:51You would think, because I think Rob Thompson is also one of
- 32:54those more, I guess brotherhood type managers.
- 32:56He's done a great job with these players.
- 32:58Hence why everyone seems like the the Phillies that are kind
- 33:01of unconventionally built compared to a lot of the other
- 33:03top teams in baseball have been so successful kind of out of
- 33:07nowhere. Remember when Bryce Harper
- 33:09signed over there in 2019? They were supposed to be this
- 33:11really good team on paper and they underwhelmed for a few
- 33:13years and then 2022, all of a sudden they randomly go to the
- 33:16World Series. And they've been very well just
- 33:19put together ever since then. But they're kind of
- 33:21unconventional. I forget who was one of our
- 33:23guests that was joking about, oh, can the Phillies actually
- 33:26catch the ball with how their position player defense?
- 33:28And it's not just Casayanos, Like obviously Bryce Harper
- 33:30would his issues. Kyle Schwarber forgot in the
- 33:33outfield. There's reason.
- 33:34He's, I mean, they're playing Schwarber in the outfield again.
- 33:36I know because there's they're all butchers out there.
- 33:39Right. Reese Hoskins at first wasn't
- 33:40that good, Like they had a bunch of defensive liabilities
- 33:43throughout that lineup. But again, they've made it work.
- 33:45It's just unconventional the way they've done it.
- 33:47But their brotherhood that I say Anna is a great culture guy
- 33:51there and he's not going to be traded.
- 33:53He's not going to be cut for this.
- 33:54He's not going to be like it's not going to be any more
- 33:56discipline than just yeah, Larry, maybe just bench for a
- 33:58few games like they they love him there and it's going to stay
- 34:01that way. And there's a reason this
- 34:02Phillies team is still very strong despite, again, they
- 34:05didn't bear they couldn't make any offseason moves because they
- 34:07were salary cap or luxury tax close to it going to the
- 34:11offseason. But they're still a very good
- 34:12team. Jabba, we were just bringing up
- 34:15that Rob Thompson benched Castellanos after he bitched at
- 34:19him for pulling him for defense late in the game.
- 34:22Do you have it, you have any memories?
- 34:24You know, obviously Rob Thompson is a long is a long time.
- 34:28Girardi guy was there with the Yankees for a long time.
- 34:31I I'm impressed that he has the confidence in his standing there
- 34:34to do that to a player like Castellanos.
- 34:38Everybody knows Castellanos not good defensively at this point
- 34:40in his career, not that he was ever a great defensive player.
- 34:44Never was I I I played with him in Detroit.
- 34:49But I will tell you one thing about Thomas.
- 34:54Thomas doesn't take no shit to. Tell.
- 34:57And he's he's one of those dudes.
- 35:01Like I played in the game for a long time.
- 35:06I played in the game a long time and I'm very fortunate for that.
- 35:12But I will tell you, Thomas is a dude that will not stand for any
- 35:22of that. It's like if, if, if you want to
- 35:24come at me, come at me, but he's going to tell you, he's going to
- 35:27tell you. And if you don't like it, sorry,
- 35:31I don't know how you're going to accept it.
- 35:35But Thompson's great. And I, I stand by whatever
- 35:41Thomas does because I think it's a very, that's a baseball guy.
- 35:50He's one of those ones that we've talked about so many times
- 35:54where he's a baseball guy. Like this is, this is what we
- 35:59do. I don't care about numbers.
- 36:03I don't care about shit. I don't care about this.
- 36:06I don't care about that. If you aren't good for our team
- 36:10and if you're, if you're going to try and shit on me, no,
- 36:16that's just not going to happen. I supported 100%.
- 36:22I loved it. I I just loved it as a coach.
- 36:26You don't see enough of guys like that that just don't just
- 36:29like, no, this is the way we're going to do it.
- 36:31You're going to step out of line.
- 36:33Look, I say this to kids all the time.
- 36:37Look, you're allowed to have bad days.
- 36:39Everyone's allowed to have bad days, Agree.
- 36:41You're not allowed to take that bad day and make it everyone
- 36:44else's bad day. You know, now you're affecting
- 36:47other people. Try to try to bring it back down
- 36:50and look, you mess up. That's right.
- 36:52Go home, take a shower, try again tomorrow.
- 36:55And that's all it was, you know, take it, take a day off, cool
- 36:58off. And that's what we're doing.
- 37:00But but that's fine. Right.
- 37:02I think so. I think so.
- 37:04We'll see what they do with Castellanos, because if he gets
- 37:06traded, I think we know why. I think we know why.
- 37:09So let's keep moving. We're almost done with the show.
- 37:12This one I don't want to spend a ton of time on, but, you know,
- 37:16if you were following, there was a minor leaguer for the Orioles
- 37:20who died in a jet ski accident. Speedy, you were telling me a
- 37:22little bit about, you know, just.
- 37:25Just terrible we're. Just going to go through it very
- 37:28quickly. I unfortunately all of us I
- 37:31think know someone who's gotten hurt badly either on a jet ski
- 37:35or four Wheeler or trike, family friends.
- 37:41We lost, we lost one of our best ever pitchers in a boating
- 37:46accident. Like I don't, I don't want to
- 37:49cover this because God, I wish I would have had Jose Fernandez
- 37:55for as long as we could have had it because he was so great.
- 37:59But man, I don't like this. For me, he just especially now
- 38:05being on this side of the fence and not on the other side of the
- 38:08fence like I just gosh Dang it it.
- 38:14It sucks man, the kid had his whole career ahead of him his
- 38:16whole life. He was 19. 19 years old, you
- 38:19think you're invincible when you're 19, Speedy, I'm going to
- 38:24ask you this question because I feel like as athletes, you know
- 38:29when you're playing and it happened to me younger because I
- 38:31wasn't a great athlete. But you find out you're not
- 38:34invincible the hard way. All of us do you know that
- 38:37you're just not invincible. Jabba had the elbow.
- 38:40You found out you're not your arms not invincible, Speedy.
- 38:43You have anything like that where you know you had that in
- 38:45your life, where you felt like you could do anything and then
- 38:49maybe not. Yeah, and that's the same,
- 38:51that's the same extent of a lot of these athletes too.
- 38:53And like you were saying with in this case, you're dealing with a
- 38:56lot of guys from island nations too that just think, yeah,
- 38:58right. I'll go back and I'll, I'll go
- 39:00jet ski and just, it sucks what ends up happening.
- 39:03Obviously it's difficult in those Caribbean waters.
- 39:06I I I like trying a lot of different things.
- 39:08I wouldn't say I was ever invincible at anything with that
- 39:11kind of like physical strength, the same level.
- 39:14Obviously you have fun, you know, it seems like a good
- 39:16thrill. I've never done jet skiing, but
- 39:19again, a lot of these these water activities definitely can
- 39:22be risky, especially in that area of the of the world.
- 39:25So with everything that's there but I unfortunately just
- 39:29accident that. Very sad for a 19 year old kid.
- 39:33It sucks, man. Like I, I just wanted to
- 39:36mention, you know, shout out to his family, you know, give them,
- 39:39you know, set our thoughts and prayers and, you know, it's not
- 39:41much we can do for yeah. And I know, I know from our
- 39:45perspective and whether they hear it or not understand that
- 39:49like as somebody that is in the baseball family, I want them to
- 39:57know that like, I, I'm sorry, it sucks.
- 40:03My son is 19 years old. And I want y'all to know, like I
- 40:09know that there may be things that we can't do right.
- 40:13But I want you to know that we're thinking about you and we
- 40:17love you and we do. And I do because when I saw it,
- 40:23I was like, gosh Dang it. It's that stinks, man.
- 40:28It stinks. It's like I couldn't imagine.
- 40:31I couldn't imagine in my life losing my son before I'm 40 and
- 40:37he's 19, trying to do what he wants to do and put you guys in
- 40:44a in the best position you can be in.
- 40:47Man, I couldn't. I couldn't imagine that.
- 40:49So I want them to know and I don't know if it's ever going to
- 40:54go and do anything, but gosh Dang it, it's it sucks.
- 41:05But no, he lived for a purpose and he lived for more than what
- 41:12you realize. And I've I've kind of realized
- 41:16that since I lost my father. I hear you, man.
- 41:22Listen, let's move forwards from it.
- 41:23Yeah. I didn't want to spend too much
- 41:25time. Let's get into some highlights.
- 41:26How about that? Yeah, I got 2 highlights here.
- 41:28Zach, why don't you put the one up that you have right here on?
- 41:32Let's get into some some Yankee throwback highlights.
- 41:35Who does this play remind you of?
- 41:38Here's a play that Jeremy Pena in the hole.
- 41:40Oh, I mean if you're a Yankee fan, that's the Jeter jump throw
- 41:45done perfectly if I've ever seen it.
- 41:49Do you realize how good Jeremy Pain is in this year?
- 41:52He's currently second behind Bobby Witt, Junior in WAR for
- 41:57Shortstops. In the entire defensive
- 42:00replacement, yeah. He has been fantastic and it
- 42:03hasn't been just defense Java. He's been pretty damn good
- 42:07offensively. He's probably one of the bigger
- 42:09sleeper guys that people are not really focused in on right now,
- 42:13but he's becoming a real guy. He really is.
- 42:16He had that breakout when he first came up, kind of had a
- 42:19lull. I think he's for real.
- 42:20And now this play, my goodness. Let's talk about Gunner
- 42:25Henderson for a second and this effort by by Loriano.
- 42:28So he gets that ball. Arand is going for two.
- 42:31Look at this tag. Oh my goodness, Jabba, I don't
- 42:35know if you saw this play. Have you ever seen this type of
- 42:39play from middle infielder and it goes right here it comes.
- 42:43No look, blind swipe gets him out at 2nd.
- 42:48But you got to understand like, like we get to where we're at
- 42:53for weird reasons, right? We get to where we're at for
- 42:58weird reasons because we're just instinctively good at what we
- 43:04do. And just sometimes you can't
- 43:08explain what they do. But they've also been put in
- 43:12this position. Look.
- 43:15At where? I paused it.
- 43:15Look at that runner Henderson looks like he's doing like the
- 43:19Shawn Michaels stretch, groin stretch thing.
- 43:23And the and the the crazy part about it is the dude runnings
- 43:26and wearing #62. Unfortunately not a lot of fast
- 43:3160 twos out there, Jabba. Hey, well you look at me, I
- 43:36wasn't a fast 62. Never have to do a spinning tag
- 43:40like that, Jabba. Look, God Anderson.
- 43:44'S pretty damn good, man. Yeah, they, I mean, they need to
- 43:47pay him or they're going, they're going to lose him at
- 43:50some point. But that's that's another topic
- 43:53for conversation. Yeah, we get into that next time
- 43:56guys. The last thing we're going to
- 43:58talk about I made because the first half is almost over.
- 44:01I put up like a like how football does have an all pro
- 44:05team. I gave you an all MLB team and I
- 44:08did it in order of WAR by position.
- 44:11So there were a bunch of really good right fielders, but I only
- 44:14took the top right fielder. I only took the top catcher and
- 44:17it's in order, not by position, by the highest WAR.
- 44:20And it shouldn't surprise you. Aaron Judge tops this list
- 44:23Number two and three might surprise you because it's not
- 44:25Shohei Otani and Bobby Witt junior.
- 44:27It's it's the big dumper at catcher.
- 44:30Cal Raleigh and PCA peak Crow Armstrong, the center fielder
- 44:36dominating. Obviously a lot of the lot of
- 44:39it's defense for Pete Crow Armstrong, but Cal Raleigh's my
- 44:42goodness, Jabba. I would.
- 44:44I got to be honest you, he's the breakout player of the year in
- 44:47my opinion. I knew he was good.
- 44:49Nobody thought he was this. It's it's, it's not a breakout
- 44:52player because he hasn't done it like he's he's been around the
- 44:56league. But like they hit like 1000 OPS.
- 45:00He just it's it's over 1000. It's like 1 OO 9 or whatever.
- 45:07But at the same time it's like the dude's been in the big
- 45:10leagues, Like let's let's not act like he hasn't been doing it
- 45:14right. And you see some of these other
- 45:17guys and it's like, we know what we're going to get, but what
- 45:24like, so I'm going to ask you this question.
- 45:29When you put this together, and obviously you're great at what
- 45:32you do, what is your standard of seeing what it is, honestly?
- 45:40For this one, I simply went by F war, which is fan grafts war for
- 45:45that, for the position players, for pitching.
- 45:47I was a little bit different. I I mean it's pretty obvious I
- 45:50could have put crochet in there as well.
- 45:52Skeins. I think it's been a little bit
- 45:54better when it comes down to splitting hairs like that.
- 45:57You know that that's how I did it.
- 45:59But Cal Raleigh Jabba, his highest career OPS before this
- 46:03year is 774. Last year it was 748 to jump up
- 46:10to 1000. That's unbelievable.
- 46:13That does not happen. Speedy.
- 46:15Can you think of a guy, you know, non steroid era guy, non
- 46:20Brady Anderson, fifty home runs out of nowhere guy that's done
- 46:24something like this? Right.
- 46:25You're going to need something like your random 40 home run
- 46:29breakout type year for that because the other thing that
- 46:31factors into the OPS getting that up higher is for one thing,
- 46:36the other extra base hits that are going to come getting on
- 46:39base a lot more overall, which Raleigh has done better.
- 46:42He was kind of that all right. He was a power hitting catcher
- 46:45but struck out a lot of hit 220 and it wasn't great overall when
- 46:50it comes to like getting on base enough and stringing those other
- 46:53hits together. And now that's going into a one
- 46:57point which is unheard of for a catcher as it is.
- 47:01And maybe some of those like lighter hitting middle
- 47:04infielders like those, those are only really reserved to 1st
- 47:06baseman and those power hitting outfielders.
- 47:08And I want you to remember I did it in order.
- 47:10Which means that Cal Raleigh has higher WAR than everyone not
- 47:14named Aaron Judge in baseball, including all of the pitchers.
- 47:19Well, that, that I mean that that's literally fair.
- 47:23I I get a fish what you're doing and I get what Speedy's saying
- 47:28too on the other side of it. It's like, yeah, you see from
- 47:32one side of it and it gets we're going to talk about it right
- 47:37now. Do I think he's going to be the
- 47:43league guy? No, because he's he's just not
- 47:47that dude either. Like he's just he's not like how
- 47:54do we, and that's the thing that I say is like, how do we like if
- 47:59he is that guy, right and he goes out and does what he's
- 48:05doing right now, how do you market him?
- 48:11How do you do that? That's all Major League Baseball
- 48:15cares about. How do you market that?
- 48:18Because you're not marketing Seattle anyways.
- 48:22Well, if your nickname is the big dumper Jabba, I guess you do
- 48:25commercials with Jlo or something like that and you try
- 48:28to get yourself famous. I would, I would, I would love
- 48:32that. Let's go through the Let's go
- 48:35through the rest of the list and finish up the show.
- 48:37James Wood, the The Washington Stud youngster, is the best left
- 48:44fielder in baseball right now. He has all sorts of power at
- 48:48another two home runs, if I'm not mistaken.
- 48:50Last night, yeah. First base was a coin flip
- 48:54between Pete Alonzo and Freddie Freeman.
- 48:57Lonzo slightly higher right now with OPS plus and WAR, just very
- 49:02slightly. I think he'll probably get
- 49:04overtaken by the end of the year, but had a great start to
- 49:06the season. And Brendan Donovan at second
- 49:09base. Second base sucks this year.
- 49:11He has a 2.4 WAR. It's the highest after I think
- 49:15there's one guy with A2 WAR and everyone else is like 1 1/2 or
- 49:18like second base is brutal. There are really no good second
- 49:22baseman, primary second baseman out there, right?
- 49:25Now, other than Donovan and he's he's been blowing it out at as a
- 49:30Cardinal and a lot of people weren't really excited about the
- 49:36Cardinals night now. So it's it's just a little
- 49:39weird. They have some good youngsters
- 49:41on offense. It was just they're pitching.
- 49:42That was a big question. I like some of their guys.
- 49:45I think they're a year away, at least on that line up.
- 49:48And I think they need to add a real arm.
- 49:50But what else there? I think, I think they're on the
- 49:53way up. I certainly think they're on the
- 49:54way up. A guy who's all the way up is
- 49:58Terry Schuble. Oh, my God, another win today.
- 50:01The front half of the doubleheader, The guy has a 3
- 50:051/2 war. We're not even half.
- 50:08We're halfway through June. He's best pitcher in the world.
- 50:13Paul Skeens, second Paul Skeens. He's got a three WAR.
- 50:18He's got a sub 2 ERA. He strikes out everyone.
- 50:21He just plays on a horrible team.
- 50:23Just plays on a horrible team. They're just a terrible
- 50:26ownership. Management of how you want to do
- 50:29something and build around a guy really bothers me.
- 50:33We've been talking about negative things about the, the,
- 50:35you know, kind of out of nowhere about the Pirates all season.
- 50:39It's just shocking. Well, I mean, because it's true.
- 50:42It's true from. From like the bricks of the
- 50:46fans, bricks that they took out of the stadium because they're
- 50:48stupid to, yeah. Go ahead.
- 50:49I was going to say, we thought the White Sox, the last three
- 50:53years, all the stories coming out with them, were the model of
- 50:56what not to do for an MLB team. Now the Pirates might be taking
- 50:59that title. I, I love, I love that you put
- 51:05Rammer in because Jose Ramirez is the most underrated, best
- 51:12player in and I will tell you this, I've played this game a
- 51:16long time. Jose Ramirez is the best
- 51:19underrated player in all of baseball.
- 51:24In all of baseball. And the war doesn't lie.
- 51:26I mean he's sitting there 6th in WAR of out of like different
- 51:31position players now. Look guys like Fernando Tatis
- 51:33junior, he's a right fielder also.
- 51:35He would have had higher WAR than Jose Ramirez right now.
- 51:39But as far as by position, got to put Jose Ramirez on.
- 51:42This, but I'm, I'm, I'm saying as a whole, like, yeah, we can
- 51:46look at year to year, right? And that's kind of what we do
- 51:51because we analyze this stuff and this is what we do on the
- 51:54show. But he is literally the most
- 51:59underrated person because he doesn't care.
- 52:03He was my locker partner right down the road when I was in
- 52:08Cleveland. And you know what makes the best
- 52:12players too? They don't give a shit.
- 52:18He's like, I got my 100 million, I'm good.
- 52:24But I hated facing him and I hated every part about what he
- 52:31because it it was. It was a shitty at bat because
- 52:36I'm like, I got to, I'm going to throw 7-8 pitches and either I'm
- 52:41going to walk him or he's going to get a hit.
- 52:43I'm like, this isn't fun. Like it's not fun.
- 52:50You know this isn't fun to play against though.
- 52:52You know Jabba, you and you were when you were playing.
- 52:54You were real lethal in the pen. There's a guy who's dominating
- 52:59and he's been dominating this league for years now, and
- 53:02eventually we're going to have to start talking about him for
- 53:05some accolades after his career if he keeps going this way.
- 53:07It's Josh Hader, the best reliever in baseball.
- 53:10Speedy. Is there anyone even close as a
- 53:15closer at this point? Not this year.
- 53:18Hader has been the one down year.
- 53:21When he came up last year with the Astros, he had that rough
- 53:24start to the year and it took a while to get going.
- 53:26And I think he had a little bit of a blemish when he first got
- 53:28traded to the Padres. But his entire career beyond
- 53:31that has been as lights out as you can get for stuff wise and
- 53:36strikeout rate and just per innings.
- 53:39Like he he could stretch. He's not just he could be like
- 53:42beyond like super closer like he.
- 53:44Could just you guys, you guys don't remember when, when I
- 53:48retired, I was with the Brewers. Yes.
- 53:52Josh Hader was right next to me. Yeah, he bought, he borrowed my
- 53:57dip all the time. And then he became what he was.
- 54:03And I told him and this this something stupid that I, that I
- 54:09hate about social media. He posted something on Twitter
- 54:15when he was like 17 years old when he was in the All Star, and
- 54:26this dude sat right next to me, right next to me.
- 54:34And he had to deal with that. And I'm like, man, the shit we
- 54:40did at 16, who the hell gives a shit?
- 54:45But now you're fucking talking to him.
- 54:47And I'm like, what are we? What are we doing?
- 54:50I love hater. Hater is my dude haters, my dude
- 54:55and I'm I'm so proud of him I'm so happy for him and like I
- 55:04always I always hate when like dudes don't praise other people
- 55:11like I hate that like why can't you give love where love is
- 55:16deserved? You know what I'm saying?
- 55:18Like, why can't you do that? And it's like, yeah, I didn't
- 55:24play that long and I didn't do what hater did, but I'm never
- 55:28going to hate on that dude. Like freaking AI was part of it
- 55:36and I was an honor to be a part of it.
- 55:39Like I just, it doesn't make sense to me.
- 55:43I remember that story when that came out and they went back into
- 55:45his really old Twitter. Yeah, and his old Twitter.
- 55:48Yeah. You know, that's a shame, you
- 55:50know, But look how he is now. The guy's the best closer in
- 55:53baseball. He if he keeps it up for another
- 55:56few years, we can. Start first of all, he's not the
- 55:57best closer you if you really want to best closer is Chapman
- 56:03right now. So I so when I compare the two
- 56:05of them, Chapman is number 2 and it's for sure, but it's.
- 56:09Like wise numbers. Wise, he's just behind him.
- 56:12It's almost a dead heat. He's slightly behind him and
- 56:16that and honestly, Chapman's been playing amazing this year
- 56:19as I know from my fantasy team that I made sure I grabbed him
- 56:22because he was cheaper than Hater.
- 56:24Hater went for a lot of a lot of.
- 56:25Well, and, and the crazy thing is, like, I don't agree with a
- 56:32lot of things that Chapman has done.
- 56:38Whatever. But I also can't believe
- 56:41everything I read. Right.
- 56:46But the dude is still doing it. Yeah.
- 56:51He's got it there, man. You got to give credit.
- 56:54He's literally like his. I literally sat here and looked
- 57:00at it and I was like his differentials and everything.
- 57:06He's the best in his career right now, best in his career at
- 57:1039 years old. It's crazy.
- 57:12It's absolutely crazy and that's the type of stuff, crazy stuff
- 57:16that we get on our weekly edition.
- 57:18And that's what we talked about. Of Inside Baseball Boys.
