- 0:01SPEAKER_00: Oh, you sweethearts, you growing little broad beans, you massive giant stars.
- 0:07SPEAKER_00: Thank you.
- 0:08SPEAKER_00: Thank you.
- 0:09SPEAKER_00: Thanks for coming back.
- 0:11SPEAKER_00: You know, I wasn't sure.
- 0:12SPEAKER_00: I wasn't sure this week.
- 0:13SPEAKER_00: I was like, oh, the sun's been out.
- 0:16SPEAKER_00: Is everyone outside?
- 0:17SPEAKER_00: Are they not listening?
- 0:20SPEAKER_00: A podcast's a winter thing, but I know you're listening and I've prepared a kind of...
- 0:28SPEAKER_00: layer cake of delicious treats for you, a trifle of trifles for you this week.
- 0:35SPEAKER_00: And I'm sure you have noticed already that I haven't had a sponsor this week.
- 0:42SPEAKER_00: I'm a bit sponsor shy because I don't know if you remember,
- 0:46SPEAKER_00: but in the Red Shoes episode,
- 0:48SPEAKER_00: I had a wonderful sponsor.
- 0:49SPEAKER_00: I'm not going to say who it was because in fact, I pronounced it wrong.
- 0:55SPEAKER_00: And I got into a bit of trouble for pronouncing it wrong.
- 0:59SPEAKER_00: I'll do it again.
- 1:00SPEAKER_00: I'll pronounce it correctly.
- 1:02SPEAKER_00: But it was a clothing label, if you remember.
- 1:05SPEAKER_00: And I've been reflecting this week that that's kind of how I dress,
- 1:10SPEAKER_00: you know,
- 1:10SPEAKER_00: like I can't pronounce my labels.
- 1:13SPEAKER_00: And I'd like to kind of sort that out.
- 1:16SPEAKER_00: So together we should go on this journey of pronouncing labels correctly.
- 1:23SPEAKER_00: And I've been thinking as well,
- 1:24SPEAKER_00: you know,
- 1:24SPEAKER_00: there's been a lot of complaints from my friends that they don't know how to dress
- 1:29SPEAKER_00: because of this weather.
- 1:30SPEAKER_00: You know, the weather keeps on changing.
- 1:33SPEAKER_00: That's not a problem for me.
- 1:34SPEAKER_00: I've had years of dressing inappropriately.
- 1:36SPEAKER_00: I've had, honestly, centuries of dressing inappropriately.
- 1:40SPEAKER_00: Like,
- 1:40SPEAKER_00: getting up,
- 1:41SPEAKER_00: getting dressed,
- 1:41SPEAKER_00: it's much worse in cities because you cannot avoid your reflection at some point
- 1:46SPEAKER_00: and you just think,
- 1:47SPEAKER_00: oh,
- 1:48SPEAKER_00: I wore that today.
- 1:49SPEAKER_00: But out in the countryside, it doesn't make any difference.
- 1:52SPEAKER_01: Well, everyone sees it, but you can't see it.
- 1:54SPEAKER_01: It's great.
- 1:55SPEAKER_00: So, yeah, dressing inappropriately is...
- 1:59SPEAKER_00: is something I'm very much used to.
- 2:01SPEAKER_00: So yes, I've been wearing warm clothes and the sun's come out and I've been sweating.
- 2:06SPEAKER_00: And yes,
- 2:07SPEAKER_00: I've been wearing hardly anything and it's poured with rain and I've got soaking wet,
- 2:11SPEAKER_00: but I'm used to that and it seems other people aren't.
- 2:14SPEAKER_00: So we're all catching up with each other, aren't we?
- 2:16SPEAKER_00: We're all walking each other home.
- 2:20SPEAKER_00: So that episode that I recorded,
- 2:23SPEAKER_00: that fateful episode,
- 2:25SPEAKER_00: the Red Shoes episode,
- 2:28SPEAKER_00: I don't know if you can remember,
- 2:30SPEAKER_00: but there was Noah knocking at the door and trying to get in and basically kind of
- 2:36SPEAKER_00: disturbing the recording of the podcast because he'd been suspended from school for
- 2:41SPEAKER_00: his midsummer rutting.
- 2:44SPEAKER_00: And this week we heard that he's been expelled.
- 2:49SPEAKER_00: And so I have had, oh, did you feel that then?
- 2:52SPEAKER_00: When I said it,
- 2:52SPEAKER_00: like,
- 2:54SPEAKER_00: sort of my sort of internal parent-ometer just kind of plummeted to the bottom of
- 3:00SPEAKER_00: my body.
- 3:02SPEAKER_00: Obviously, I can't help but think I must be a terrible parent if my son's been expelled.
- 3:12SPEAKER_00: So I've been working with that feeling, with really holding myself.
- 3:16SPEAKER_00: I feel like...
- 3:17SPEAKER_00: That was the first place for me was to kind of really hold myself through this
- 3:22SPEAKER_00: experience and work out where I needed to grow and what I needed to change.
- 3:29SPEAKER_00: And then to find a man who could hold Noah or meet Noah or be somehow some resource.
- 3:36SPEAKER_00: You know, there's some incredible women in my life and I was really looking around.
- 3:40SPEAKER_00: for a man and my dad's dead and I don't have so many male friends and then I
- 3:48SPEAKER_00: remembered that at Glastonbury Festival I'd camped with the Mexican Toltecs and I
- 3:56SPEAKER_00: was watching them I was watching them walk and I was watching one of them singing
- 4:01SPEAKER_00: one day and as he sang
- 4:03SPEAKER_00: was like, I couldn't tell where he ended and the earth began.
- 4:08SPEAKER_00: He was like a mountain on the earth,
- 4:11SPEAKER_00: making these sounds that were just coming from,
- 4:14SPEAKER_00: from deep in the earth.
- 4:15SPEAKER_00: And I knew they were still in town.
- 4:18SPEAKER_00: So I was like, right, I'm going to go and get myself a Mexican Toltec.
- 4:22SPEAKER_00: So I went and found the grandfather Toltec and, um,
- 4:29SPEAKER_00: yeah,
- 4:29SPEAKER_00: I'm remembering that my friend Si,
- 4:31SPEAKER_00: he listened to the first episode and he said he didn't understand some of it.
- 4:38SPEAKER_00: So I'm going to slow down and say that
- 4:43SPEAKER_00: When I say Mexican Toltec,
- 4:44SPEAKER_00: what I understand by that is that these people were Mexicans and these people were
- 4:52SPEAKER_00: bringing an ancient lineage of wisdom from the Toltec people to this land.
- 5:03SPEAKER_00: And so I didn't really know much more than that,
- 5:06SPEAKER_00: except that I'd observed that they did things very lightly and fairly and with a
- 5:13SPEAKER_00: real focus at Glastonbury.
- 5:17SPEAKER_00: And really, I just saw them coming and going.
- 5:19SPEAKER_00: I didn't see anything.
- 5:20SPEAKER_00: or take part in any of their ceremonies.
- 5:21SPEAKER_00: They did do a ceremony to honour water and they did a ceremony to light the fires.
- 5:29SPEAKER_00: All the fires were lit by these Mexican Toltecs at the beginning of Glastonbury Festival this year.
- 5:36SPEAKER_00: So I went to see one of them, the grandfather, Abuela, they called him.
- 5:42SPEAKER_00: And I went there and I was really kind of in shock and distress.
- 5:46SPEAKER_00: And there was this gorgeous woman who was translating for us.
- 5:50SPEAKER_00: And I said, oh, my son's been expelled and I don't know what to do with him.
- 5:53SPEAKER_00: And he's 14.
- 5:55SPEAKER_00: And he said, what's the problem?
- 5:58SPEAKER_00: My schooling finished at 14.
- 6:01SPEAKER_00: Get him on an apprenticeship.
- 6:03SPEAKER_00: And I was like, oh, it doesn't work like that in this country.
- 6:06SPEAKER_00: And that's the truth, really, is my son's ready to leave school, probably.
- 6:11SPEAKER_00: He's ready to do different things.
- 6:15SPEAKER_00: But I explained to him that that wasn't how it was in this country.
- 6:19SPEAKER_00: And he stared me deep in the eyes with his deep brown eyes.
- 6:25SPEAKER_00: And I thought, I'm going to be
- 6:27SPEAKER_00: given some really strong medicine here.
- 6:31SPEAKER_00: I'm going to be given some really acerbic or healing wisdom, some ancient wisdom.
- 6:38SPEAKER_00: And he said to me, change your frequency.
- 6:42SPEAKER_00: He said, I wouldn't want to be close to you with your frequency.
- 6:46SPEAKER_00: Change your frequency.
- 6:52SPEAKER_00: I mean, I am quite used to
- 6:55SPEAKER_00: dressing as though I can't pronounce the labels of my clothes.
- 6:59SPEAKER_00: And I'm even more used to wearing the inappropriate outfit for the wrong occasion.
- 7:05SPEAKER_00: But being at the right frequency for the right occasion is not something I had ever considered before.
- 7:13SPEAKER_00: And I didn't want to, but I kind of felt what he meant, that I was feeling sort of
- 7:18SPEAKER_00: needy and clingy and distressed and um panicky and and i've noticed myself over
- 7:25SPEAKER_00: these last weeks and months kind of outside my son's door sort of wringing my tea
- 7:30SPEAKER_00: towel um you know not really quite sure how to approach him or how to be around him
- 7:36SPEAKER_00: So I shall be, think of me over these next times because I shall be changing my frequency.
- 7:44SPEAKER_00: That's what I'm going to be working on over the summer.
- 7:47SPEAKER_00: But the next thing he said was bring him to me, bring him to see me.
- 7:51SPEAKER_00: He said, I'll be, and he gave me this address.
- 7:53SPEAKER_00: He said, I'll be here at seven o'clock tonight.
- 7:55SPEAKER_00: Bring him to see me.
- 7:57SPEAKER_00: So I did.
- 7:59SPEAKER_00: I took him.
- 8:01SPEAKER_00: And I don't know what happened between them.
- 8:04SPEAKER_00: They had some kind of interchange,
- 8:06SPEAKER_00: which I,
- 8:07SPEAKER_00: because I'm changing my frequency,
- 8:08SPEAKER_00: I tried hard not to notice or be around and just let them get on with their thing.
- 8:14SPEAKER_00: Old me would have been like, you know, trying to get involved, but I didn't.
- 8:19SPEAKER_00: So then Noah went off and suddenly I found myself
- 8:23SPEAKER_00: at a Mexican Toltec ceremony,
- 8:26SPEAKER_00: which I hadn't really considered,
- 8:29SPEAKER_00: but I thought I was there now and I might as well stay.
- 8:32SPEAKER_00: And I thought you'd be interested to know what went on in this ceremony.
- 8:37SPEAKER_00: But before I do,
- 8:39SPEAKER_00: I'm going to let you know that on my vast and delightful podcast sofa,
- 8:45SPEAKER_00: I do have a guest here for us this week.
- 8:49SPEAKER_00: And I'm really excited to introduce her to you and I can't wait any longer.
- 8:53SPEAKER_00: So I'm going to introduce you to her.
- 8:55SPEAKER_00: It is Maya Love.
- 8:58SPEAKER_00: Hello, Maya Love.
- 8:59SPEAKER_00: Hello, Sarah.
- 9:02SPEAKER_00: Now, Maya is another one of those incredible living thereabouts, Glastonbury people.
- 9:09SPEAKER_00: And she is, oh, she's just got so much talent.
- 9:15SPEAKER_00: When did we meet?
- 9:17SPEAKER_02: Remember?
- 9:17SPEAKER_02: Oh.
- 9:19SPEAKER_02: I think I met you on a sofa at a gig in Glastonbury watching Dora Darling.
- 9:25SPEAKER_02: Was it?
- 9:26SPEAKER_00: It all goes around in circles.
- 9:28SPEAKER_00: And I thought it was when I came to Pretty Folk Festival with Noah when he was a
- 9:33SPEAKER_00: baby and Dragonsfly were playing and I saw you playing Dragonsfly.
- 9:36SPEAKER_00: Could have also been.
- 9:38SPEAKER_00: Around that time.
- 9:39SPEAKER_00: Around that time.
- 9:40SPEAKER_00: So Maya plays the bagpipes.
- 9:42SPEAKER_00: She's in a band called Dragonsfly.
- 9:45SPEAKER_00: She's a singer-songwriter.
- 9:47SPEAKER_00: I've been in women's circles with Mayor.
- 9:50SPEAKER_00: I've been in all kinds of amazing spaces with her where she's been bringing her thing.
- 9:58SPEAKER_00: But I noticed earlier on that, is it true you've just done a retreat, a Wild Song retreat?
- 10:04SPEAKER_00: Yes.
- 10:04SPEAKER_00: Okay, well, I want to confess that I was too nervous to go.
- 10:08SPEAKER_00: I saw it and I just thought,
- 10:11Ah,
- 10:11SPEAKER_00: and usually I'm like,
- 10:13SPEAKER_00: okay,
- 10:13SPEAKER_00: well,
- 10:13SPEAKER_00: that means something,
- 10:14SPEAKER_00: you know,
- 10:15SPEAKER_00: I should,
- 10:15SPEAKER_00: but I've just been too distracted by other things.
- 10:17SPEAKER_00: So can you, in the safety of knowing that it's finished, tell us a little bit about it?
- 10:25SPEAKER_01: Yes, I can.
- 10:26SPEAKER_02: And I will be doing more.
- 10:27SPEAKER_02: So you will have your chance, Sarah.
- 10:29SPEAKER_01: Okay, great, great.
- 10:30SPEAKER_02: Yeah, so it was a weekend.
- 10:32SPEAKER_02: And it was a small group of women.
- 10:35SPEAKER_02: There were seven of us.
- 10:37SPEAKER_02: So we were able to really go deep individually.
- 10:40SPEAKER_02: And...
- 10:41SPEAKER_02: Using a combination of improvisation games and sound and movement and breath
- 10:50SPEAKER_02: exercises that I've gained and developed over the years through working on my own
- 10:55SPEAKER_02: voice and running choirs and stuff.
- 11:00SPEAKER_02: we would all just explore our voices and then I developed these really cool
- 11:07SPEAKER_02: techniques for getting which I don't actually want to give away what they are to
- 11:13SPEAKER_02: help people to discover what the kind of nub of the fear was that was really
- 11:20SPEAKER_02: getting in the way of them really embodying their full authentic voice
- 11:25SPEAKER_00: So when you say, I got a bit stuck at explore your voice.
- 11:28SPEAKER_00: When you say explore your voice, do you mean like make loads of different sounds?
- 11:34Yeah.
- 11:35SPEAKER_02: And, you know, really very much with the premise of everything is welcome.
- 11:39SPEAKER_02: Nothing is wrong.
- 11:40SPEAKER_02: There's no criticism or judgment here.
- 11:43SPEAKER_02: There are no wrong notes.
- 11:45SPEAKER_00: Oh, I'm just shivering all over.
- 11:48SPEAKER_02: Okay.
- 11:49SPEAKER_02: So all sound is welcome.
- 11:51SPEAKER_02: All sound is valid and sacred.
- 11:56SPEAKER_02: And so we did some deep rooting ourselves into the earth and drawing up the earth
- 12:00SPEAKER_02: energy into our bodies and into our throats before making sound as well with that
- 12:07SPEAKER_02: allowance and acceptance.
- 12:09SPEAKER_02: And with my instruction was allow
- 12:12SPEAKER_02: allow, allow.
- 12:15SPEAKER_00: So,
- 12:15SPEAKER_00: um,
- 12:15SPEAKER_00: I know the answer to this,
- 12:18SPEAKER_00: but I'm going to ask it because there's a part of me that doesn't believe you.
- 12:21SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 12:22SPEAKER_00: So when I was at school,
- 12:23SPEAKER_00: um,
- 12:24SPEAKER_00: and I just started a new school and it was,
- 12:26SPEAKER_00: uh,
- 12:27SPEAKER_00: much stricter than the school that I'd been to before.
- 12:30SPEAKER_00: Um, we, I was in history, I think it was.
- 12:34SPEAKER_00: And, and there was something I didn't understand.
- 12:36SPEAKER_00: And I went,
- 12:37SPEAKER_00: uh like that and the teacher said uh well she was just like how dare you make that
- 12:43SPEAKER_00: sound in my class my goodness we're not animals grunting is for the pigsty if
- 12:49SPEAKER_00: you're going to grunt again i'll take you to the farm and all that just really
- 12:53SPEAKER_00: really really went down on me and i see now i can understand from a perspective not
- 12:58SPEAKER_00: that i'm saying that was appropriate but that um
- 13:01SPEAKER_00: you know,
- 13:01SPEAKER_00: there's a new person in the class and you just want to kind of like,
- 13:04SPEAKER_00: you know,
- 13:06SPEAKER_00: get them in line very quickly.
- 13:08SPEAKER_00: But I remember being really shocked and frightened.
- 13:12SPEAKER_00: And I think that as well as,
- 13:15SPEAKER_00: you know,
- 13:16SPEAKER_00: kind of lots of sound,
- 13:18SPEAKER_00: not being,
- 13:19SPEAKER_00: not being welcome,
- 13:20SPEAKER_00: you know,
- 13:21SPEAKER_00: I've got a whole thing going on with my son where he's just like,
- 13:24SPEAKER_00: please don't sing,
- 13:26SPEAKER_00: you know,
- 13:26SPEAKER_00: wherever we go,
- 13:27SPEAKER_00: please don't sing.
- 13:28SPEAKER_00: And when we get to the,
- 13:29SPEAKER_00: We go around the corner and he might see someone in the distance that he might vaguely know.
- 13:35SPEAKER_01: He turns the radio down immediately.
- 13:37SPEAKER_01: So, you know, it's like there's a sensitivity there around sound.
- 13:41SPEAKER_00: So when you say I can make any noise I like,
- 13:45SPEAKER_00: I'm going to make a few noises and I want you to tell me these noises are welcome.
- 13:49SPEAKER_00: OK, so.
- 13:50SPEAKER_02: And I just want to say as well that I really welcome the animal in the workshops because it's like,
- 13:57SPEAKER_02: We are human animals.
- 13:59SPEAKER_02: We are animals.
- 14:00SPEAKER_02: We are, you know, conscious, sacred, spiritual beings and all of that.
- 14:03SPEAKER_02: But we are animals.
- 14:04SPEAKER_02: Our bodies are animal.
- 14:06SPEAKER_02: You know, we make noise.
- 14:08SPEAKER_02: Do you know what I mean?
- 14:10SPEAKER_02: So all of those sounds are just totally valid.
- 14:14SPEAKER_02: And we need to make those sounds.
- 14:16SPEAKER_02: They need to come out of us.
- 14:17SPEAKER_00: Do you think that they're, whether we make them or not, they're stuck inside us or somehow they're in us?
- 14:22SPEAKER_00: Like a kind of,
- 14:24SPEAKER_00: Can I say fart?
- 14:25SPEAKER_00: Like a fart that you hold in.
- 14:26SPEAKER_00: I'm always saying to my son that,
- 14:28SPEAKER_01: you know,
- 14:29SPEAKER_01: you can hold them in as much as you like,
- 14:30SPEAKER_01: but as soon as you fall asleep,
- 14:32SPEAKER_01: they start popping out.
- 14:33SPEAKER_02: Yeah, and also when you're holding them in, they give you a tummy ache.
- 14:36SPEAKER_02: They make you feel rough.
- 14:37SPEAKER_01: Yeah, right.
- 14:38SPEAKER_02: And we're so trained in,
- 14:40SPEAKER_02: like,
- 14:41SPEAKER_02: leaving our bodies and being in our heads through our schooling system and our
- 14:45SPEAKER_02: culture that we're quite divorced from our bodies.
- 14:48SPEAKER_02: And when we actually start coming back down into our bodies and re-inhabiting our bodies again...
- 14:54SPEAKER_02: all these sounds want to come out.
- 14:57SPEAKER_02: Okay.
- 14:58SPEAKER_02: That's my experience.
- 14:58SPEAKER_02: When you're really, really breathing into our bodies, it's like, ugh, ugh.
- 15:03SPEAKER_01: There's some stuff there.
- 15:05SPEAKER_01: That noise would be okay at your workshop.
- 15:07SPEAKER_01: Totally.
- 15:08SPEAKER_01: I have to just keep checking.
- 15:11SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 15:12SPEAKER_00: okay it's like and I know the answer but it's like this place doesn't know the
- 15:15SPEAKER_00: answer and she's scared you know she's really scared and I've talked on the podcast
- 15:20SPEAKER_00: about you know joining Tally's Choir the Avalonian Free State Choir and it just
- 15:24SPEAKER_00: being like a tsunami of noise coming towards me of different languages and stuff in
- 15:30SPEAKER_00: it and there's a place where I'm not absorbing it and finding ways to kind of clear
- 15:35SPEAKER_00: the way so I'm absorbing it a bit more so if I went um
- 15:40SPEAKER_01: Would that noise be welcome?
- 15:43SPEAKER_01: Totally.
- 15:43SPEAKER_02: Totally.
- 15:44SPEAKER_02: I'd love it.
- 15:45SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 15:45SPEAKER_02: I'd love it.
- 15:46SPEAKER_02: And I hear your noise.
- 15:48SPEAKER_02: I hear your sound.
- 15:51SPEAKER_02: And that then inspires me to ask you to then make a certain movement or breathe
- 15:59SPEAKER_02: into a certain part of your body or make another sound that frees other bits of
- 16:05SPEAKER_02: your being.
- 16:06SPEAKER_02: Okay.
- 16:07SPEAKER_02: So then more sounds come out.
- 16:10SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 16:10SPEAKER_02: And, you know, like there was a cacophony, like...
- 16:14SPEAKER_02: In this room.
- 16:15SPEAKER_02: Right.
- 16:15SPEAKER_02: You know, and some people might go, oh my God, that sounds horrendous.
- 16:19SPEAKER_02: But the experience that those women had,
- 16:23SPEAKER_02: like each one of them came out of there going,
- 16:25SPEAKER_02: oh my God,
- 16:26SPEAKER_02: that was such a transformation for me.
- 16:28SPEAKER_02: I now feel in love with my voice.
- 16:30SPEAKER_02: I feel confident.
- 16:31SPEAKER_02: Some of these are people who were told not to sing.
- 16:33SPEAKER_02: or speak,
- 16:34SPEAKER_02: pretty much,
- 16:35SPEAKER_02: from a very young age,
- 16:37SPEAKER_02: and who think that they can't sing in tune and stuff like this.
- 16:41SPEAKER_02: One of the women had run choirs for years,
- 16:43SPEAKER_02: but was getting older and was concerned that she was going to lose her voice
- 16:46SPEAKER_02: forever now.
- 16:47SPEAKER_02: So,
- 16:47SPEAKER_02: you know,
- 16:48SPEAKER_02: there are all sorts of different people in the room,
- 16:50SPEAKER_02: and all of them were like,
- 16:53SPEAKER_02: oh,
- 16:53SPEAKER_02: my God,
- 16:53SPEAKER_02: I've got so much from allowing all of this.
- 16:57SPEAKER_02: I now love my voice.
- 16:58SPEAKER_02: I feel confident and free.
- 17:00SPEAKER_02: Wow.
- 17:01SPEAKER_02: I mean, that's great, isn't it?
- 17:03SPEAKER_02: It wasn't all noises.
- 17:05SPEAKER_00: Yeah, yeah.
- 17:05SPEAKER_02: We did some singing and made some very beautiful,
- 17:10SPEAKER_02: not that I want to put judgment on any sounds,
- 17:11SPEAKER_02: but there was a right old mixture of what came out.
- 17:15SPEAKER_02: We created some amazing music together with our sounds,
- 17:21SPEAKER_02: with just the direction of these different improvisation games and...
- 17:26SPEAKER_02: And in what people freed, basically, you know.
- 17:30SPEAKER_02: I think you have to sort of have the mess first before you,
- 17:35SPEAKER_02: it's kind of like throwing the deck of cards up in the air,
- 17:38SPEAKER_02: you know,
- 17:38SPEAKER_02: before you can then go,
- 17:39SPEAKER_02: okay,
- 17:40SPEAKER_02: what are the different suits?
- 17:41SPEAKER_02: Do I like that number with that one or that colour with that one?
- 17:44SPEAKER_02: Do you know what I mean?
- 17:45SPEAKER_02: You can put them all in and order you like.
- 17:47SPEAKER_00: Okay, well, I'm tempted.
- 17:49SPEAKER_00: I wonder if anyone wants to come on it with me, if you're listening.
- 17:53SPEAKER_00: So the next one's September, I remember you saying.
- 17:56SPEAKER_02: Yeah, September 28th and 29th, last weekend of September.
- 17:59SPEAKER_00: I'm doing a workshop that weekend.
- 18:02SPEAKER_00: So you'll have to do another one, another one.
- 18:04SPEAKER_00: Okay, great, great.
- 18:05SPEAKER_02: But there is an early bird price at the moment for the next week.
- 18:08SPEAKER_00: Okay, brilliant.
- 18:09SPEAKER_00: Good time for you to come on the podcast then, and you're lucky, you people who are listening to it,
- 18:14SPEAKER_00: As it comes out.
- 18:16SPEAKER_00: So great.
- 18:18SPEAKER_00: Oh, thank you.
- 18:19SPEAKER_00: I feel like just in what you've been talking about, I feel freer in my body.
- 18:25SPEAKER_00: I think it's listening to your voice as well.
- 18:27SPEAKER_00: I think it's listening to...
- 18:30SPEAKER_00: all the openings and and all the places you can hear it can't you guys I'm talking
- 18:35SPEAKER_00: to you out there um my little broadbean podcasters my big massive giant star people
- 18:42SPEAKER_00: um that in her in the way that Maya speaks in the in her voice there's so much room
- 18:49SPEAKER_00: like there's just so much room and I'm um
- 18:53SPEAKER_00: It's not just my voice that's responding to that.
- 18:58SPEAKER_00: It's like my belly just feels like it can just relax.
- 19:02SPEAKER_00: That feels really nice.
- 19:04SPEAKER_00: Thank you.
- 19:05SPEAKER_02: I'm really glad that you get that because a lot of it is about chilling out our
- 19:11SPEAKER_02: nervous systems so that our diaphragms relax and we can actually breathe into our bellies.
- 19:16SPEAKER_02: As well as opening the cathedral of our throats.
- 19:18SPEAKER_02: Okay.
- 19:19SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 19:20SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 19:20SPEAKER_00: Opening the cathedral of our throats.
- 19:22SPEAKER_00: Can you feel that?
- 19:23SPEAKER_00: Can you feel that deep inside you that there's a cathedral inside you?
- 19:29SPEAKER_00: I can hear it in Maya's voice.
- 19:31SPEAKER_00: Is it true for all of us?
- 19:32SPEAKER_01: Wow.
- 19:32SPEAKER_01: Absolutely.
- 19:33SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 19:35SPEAKER_00: I'm feeling as I'm kind of,
- 19:37SPEAKER_00: I'm walking,
- 19:38SPEAKER_00: I'm imagining myself walking in my throat that there's no end to the places that we
- 19:46SPEAKER_00: can go and explore.
- 19:47SPEAKER_00: I guess it's the same with life, isn't it?
- 19:49SPEAKER_00: There's just no end to it.
- 19:53SPEAKER_00: So I'm,
- 19:54SPEAKER_00: and I'm,
- 19:54SPEAKER_00: thank you,
- 19:55SPEAKER_00: Mayor,
- 19:55SPEAKER_00: you've brought me like right back because it was a church where I went to this
- 20:00SPEAKER_00: ceremony with the Mexican Toltecs and there was nothing scary about it at all.
- 20:07SPEAKER_00: It was very light and it was very fun and it's so inclusive and so encouraging.
- 20:14SPEAKER_00: There wasn't any moment where I felt like I wasn't good enough to be there or I
- 20:18SPEAKER_00: didn't know what I was doing.
- 20:20SPEAKER_00: Everything was okay.
- 20:21SPEAKER_00: Everything was welcome.
- 20:23SPEAKER_00: Everything was included.
- 20:24SPEAKER_00: It was really gorgeous.
- 20:27SPEAKER_00: So they began by showing us their altar.
- 20:30SPEAKER_00: We're all sitting in a big circle.
- 20:33SPEAKER_00: And in the middle, they had made a not quite a sort of Celtic cross.
- 20:42SPEAKER_00: What's the other word for that?
- 20:45SPEAKER_00: Well, I think it was like, you know, like three wheels going round, three spirals going round.
- 20:52SPEAKER_00: And within the three spirals, they had earth, air, fire and water.
- 20:57SPEAKER_00: And I've seen some altars lately in the whole, you know, there's a whole kind of shamanic medicine scene.
- 21:04SPEAKER_00: And they're beautiful and real artists, incredible artists make these altars.
- 21:09SPEAKER_00: They're stunning altars.
- 21:12SPEAKER_00: And this wasn't like that.
- 21:13SPEAKER_00: This had been gathered through the day quickly and simply to represent the directions.
- 21:22SPEAKER_00: There was a bowl for water and we held up the bowl for water and we talked about
- 21:29SPEAKER_00: water and flow and oceans and we just kind of tuned in with water for a while.
- 21:38SPEAKER_00: And then we...
- 21:41SPEAKER_00: I think we were moving, if I remember rightly, we were moving north, south, east and west.
- 21:46SPEAKER_00: So we were facing different directions with every element.
- 21:50SPEAKER_00: And then we went to earth and there was some flowers.
- 21:55SPEAKER_00: There was some grain.
- 21:56SPEAKER_00: There was a piece of earth there.
- 21:58SPEAKER_00: There was some mud there.
- 22:00SPEAKER_00: And we just talked about being grounded,
- 22:01SPEAKER_00: about having the nourishment that we need,
- 22:04SPEAKER_00: about being rooted into the ground.
- 22:06SPEAKER_00: We went round to fire.
- 22:09SPEAKER_00: There was a candle there.
- 22:10SPEAKER_00: We talked about ignition, about light, about burning things away.
- 22:15SPEAKER_00: And then to air.
- 22:18SPEAKER_00: And when we went into the air element, they got some incenses, some sage and some sweet grass.
- 22:27SPEAKER_00: some different incenses which were really smoking,
- 22:29SPEAKER_00: smoking,
- 22:30SPEAKER_00: smoking,
- 22:30SPEAKER_00: and they saged us all with big wings.
- 22:33SPEAKER_00: And when I say saged,
- 22:35SPEAKER_00: what I mean is that they made a lot of smoke from these incenses and then they
- 22:40SPEAKER_00: wafted it around us,
- 22:42SPEAKER_00: around our bodies.
- 22:44SPEAKER_00: And in this way,
- 22:46SPEAKER_00: they talked about purification,
- 22:47SPEAKER_00: about this purifying our bodies,
- 22:50SPEAKER_00: about it being a kind of like cleanser of smoke for our bodies.
- 22:56SPEAKER_00: And that was the beginning of the ceremony.
- 23:00SPEAKER_00: And then they gave us all a cup of cocoa, cacao, chocolate.
- 23:09SPEAKER_00: And it was dark.
- 23:10SPEAKER_00: It wasn't like hot chocolate.
- 23:12SPEAKER_00: It was kind of very, very dark.
- 23:16SPEAKER_00: And it was in a small bowl, like a cup without a handle.
- 23:24SPEAKER_00: And they invited us to take this bowl of cacao and put it to our hearts.
- 23:33SPEAKER_00: And it was warm.
- 23:36SPEAKER_00: And if you feel like doing it now,
- 23:37SPEAKER_00: then go ahead and pause this podcast and go and make yourself some cacao,
- 23:42SPEAKER_00: something hot,
- 23:43SPEAKER_00: something hot.
- 23:44SPEAKER_00: And just feel it.
- 23:45SPEAKER_00: And next time you've got a cuppa or something hot, just feel that.
- 23:50SPEAKER_00: Feel how that feels to just put it
- 23:53SPEAKER_00: Nestle it into your heart to feel the warmth.
- 23:56SPEAKER_00: So there we were, all of us, maybe 50 of us, with cups warming our hearts.
- 24:05SPEAKER_00: And they talked to us about the cacao and how sacred it was.
- 24:09SPEAKER_00: And they described the huge pods and the opening of the huge pods.
- 24:14SPEAKER_00: And all the while we've got this warm cacao to our heart.
- 24:18SPEAKER_00: And they're talking about the warmth of our hearts.
- 24:22SPEAKER_00: And the cold places in our hearts and the forgotten places in our hearts and the
- 24:27SPEAKER_00: empty places in our hearts.
- 24:29SPEAKER_00: And they're asking us to visualize this softness, this warmth, warming up those cold places.
- 24:39SPEAKER_00: really allowing the cacao to seep in they were asking us to watch the steam and
- 24:48SPEAKER_00: imagine the steam kind of permeating us so we've got the warmth and the steam and
- 24:54SPEAKER_00: they talked about the the spices in the cacao as well that we're going to
- 25:02SPEAKER_00: awaken and enliven and help move through, help the cacao move through and into our bodies.
- 25:12SPEAKER_00: And then they talked about the bitterness of the cacao, the bitter taste.
- 25:18SPEAKER_00: And they invited any bitterness in our own bodies, any bitterness in our hearts.
- 25:26SPEAKER_00: That the bitterness of the cacao had come to meet the bitterness in our hearts so
- 25:31SPEAKER_00: that it didn't need to hide away.
- 25:33SPEAKER_00: We didn't need to squash or suppress it.
- 25:37SPEAKER_00: That it could come out.
- 25:38SPEAKER_00: That it could come out.
- 25:41SPEAKER_00: That it could be digested.
- 25:44SPEAKER_00: That it could be processed.
- 25:45SPEAKER_00: That it could be released.
- 25:51SPEAKER_00: So then we start to drink our cacao and the abuela with his feet like rocks on the ground.
- 26:02SPEAKER_00: He's standing with his body so, so much like a mountain.
- 26:10SPEAKER_00: He gets this huge drum and he starts to
- 26:16SPEAKER_00: bang the drum he starts to play the drum and he's banging it over and over and over
- 26:21SPEAKER_00: again and we've drunk our cacao and we're standing and we're just moving stepping
- 26:27SPEAKER_00: stepping there's nothing else to do the banging of the drum is just so loud and so
- 26:32SPEAKER_00: strong and I'm feeling my heart which has been warmed you know it's had I've had
- 26:37SPEAKER_00: I've been tuning into my heart for so long now softening and
- 26:41SPEAKER_00: and opening and warming and feeling any bitter places, any lost places.
- 26:46SPEAKER_00: I've been exploring all the different places in my heart for some time.
- 26:49SPEAKER_00: And now there's this banging, banging, banging, banging of the drum.
- 26:54SPEAKER_00: And I'm reminded of my heartbeat, my whole body.
- 26:56SPEAKER_00: I can feel my whole body beating like the drum, beating and beating.
- 27:01SPEAKER_00: And I'm
- 27:01SPEAKER_00: open my eyes and I look around and everyone's there and I'm thinking wow everyone's
- 27:05SPEAKER_00: got this pulsing heartbeat flooding their body with life over and over again in
- 27:12SPEAKER_00: every moment and and we start to move we start to dance we start to sing I mean
- 27:18SPEAKER_00: even I can see even the most self-conscious and rigid people in the room there
- 27:22SPEAKER_00: they're moving and they're singing they're moving their bodies and we're singing
- 27:26SPEAKER_00: and we're self-consciousness is dropping away and as I'm moving I can feel
- 27:30SPEAKER_00: oh what a stressful day it's been and the stress of the day just kind of hanging
- 27:36SPEAKER_00: off my shoulders and hanging out of my arms and I start to sort of shrug my
- 27:40SPEAKER_00: shoulders and shake about and that's my invitation to you guys just oh what is it
- 27:45SPEAKER_00: you want to let go of in this moment in this day just
- 27:49SPEAKER_00: Letting go and letting go and letting go and letting go.
- 27:54SPEAKER_00: Let's just allow our bodies to move in the way that they need to move so that we
- 28:01SPEAKER_00: can come back to this clear beating heart that we've got inside of our bodies.
- 28:06SPEAKER_00: So we can come back to this soft and open space in our bellies where everything is
- 28:12SPEAKER_00: in alignment,
- 28:13SPEAKER_00: where we can work everything out.
- 28:17SPEAKER_00: And so I really,
- 28:18SPEAKER_00: really wanted to bring this to you,
- 28:22SPEAKER_00: this ceremony,
- 28:24SPEAKER_00: but I wanted to land it in this land.
- 28:28SPEAKER_00: I really did.
- 28:29SPEAKER_00: So that's why I invited Maya here so that she can play her drum and she can sing to
- 28:34SPEAKER_00: us and she can revitalize us and move us in these ways,
- 28:40SPEAKER_00: but with inspiration from this land.
- 28:45SPEAKER_00: And I was reminded of this chant which I've asked Maya to sing and play for us
- 28:51SPEAKER_00: because there's this prophecy of the white buffalo calf woman.
- 28:58SPEAKER_00: And I'll talk about the prophecy a little later on.
- 29:03SPEAKER_00: But it is being said that when a white buffalo calf is born, it's very rare.
- 29:13SPEAKER_00: But it's been said that when the white buffalo calf is born again,
- 29:16SPEAKER_00: that that is a blessing for our land and also a warning that we need to keep on
- 29:24SPEAKER_00: loving our land and nature.
- 29:26SPEAKER_00: And in the Yellowstone National Park, about three or four weeks ago, there was a white buffalo calf born.
- 29:38SPEAKER_00: And in thinking about that,
- 29:41SPEAKER_00: it reminded me that when I was younger, there was an albino heron in my front garden.
- 29:52SPEAKER_00: And so I began to feel with this memory, the land that my bare feet touched as a child.
- 30:02SPEAKER_00: So let's start there.
- 30:03SPEAKER_00: Let's
- 30:05SPEAKER_00: Let's remember a time in our childhood or see if we can feel back to a time in our
- 30:09SPEAKER_00: childhood where we were barefoot.
- 30:13SPEAKER_00: Were we running through sprinklers or jumping over slide mats?
- 30:17SPEAKER_00: What were we doing?
- 30:19SPEAKER_00: As we listen to Maya, let's feel our bare feet on the ground again.
- 30:38SPEAKER_02: Aaron is calling, Aaron is calling you Aaron is calling, calling you to be true
- 31:09SPEAKER_02: Aaron is calling, Aaron is calling you.
- 31:16SPEAKER_02: Aaron is calling, calling you to be true and be
- 31:44SPEAKER_02: The blessing of the sun The blessing of the moon The blessing that we're one The
- 31:56SPEAKER_02: blessing of the rain The blessing of the sun The blessing of the moon
- 32:13SPEAKER_02: Love heals us, love heals us, what is remembering we're coming home.
- 32:21SPEAKER_02: Love heals us, love heals us, what is remembering that we are home.
- 32:30SPEAKER_02: Heron is calling, Heron is calling.
- 33:07SPEAKER_00: Beautiful.
- 33:08SPEAKER_00: Thank you.
- 33:09SPEAKER_00: Thank you.
- 33:10SPEAKER_00: Thank you.
- 33:10SPEAKER_00: Thank you.
- 33:15SPEAKER_00: Feeling that kind of filtering down into my body.
- 33:19SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 33:25SPEAKER_00: Let us always remember that we've got hearts that beat like drums.
- 33:31SPEAKER_00: Maybe we always find the
- 33:34SPEAKER_00: find the beat find the beat I remember talking to a drummer once about how do you
- 33:38SPEAKER_00: stay on the beat and she laughed and said I don't stay on the beat I get on the
- 33:43SPEAKER_00: beat and I get back on the beat and I get back on the beat and I get back on the
- 33:46SPEAKER_00: beat and I think about that in life you know it's just about it's like coming back
- 33:51SPEAKER_00: someone I was in the fish and chip queue at night and this woman said to me um
- 33:57SPEAKER_00: are you in Avalon or Babylon?
- 33:59SPEAKER_00: And I was like, oh, I don't know.
- 34:00SPEAKER_00: She said, you've got to move your train track because we get stuck in Babylon.
- 34:04SPEAKER_00: You've got to move your train track.
- 34:06SPEAKER_00: You've got to look up and think, move train track, go to Avalon, and then a magical flow again.
- 34:12SPEAKER_01: And I think about that as well.
- 34:13SPEAKER_01: I'm like, she was quite scary.
- 34:16SPEAKER_01: But she was also like, words of wisdom, you know.
- 34:20SPEAKER_01: Like changing your frequency.
- 34:21SPEAKER_01: Yeah, changing your frequency, exactly.
- 34:23SPEAKER_01: So thank you.
- 34:25SPEAKER_01: I'm going to change my train track.
- 34:27SPEAKER_00: to avalon yeah thank you so that's um bringing me to telling you about this
- 34:36SPEAKER_00: prophecy of the white buffalo calf woman and they say that the white buffalo calf
- 34:44SPEAKER_00: woman
- 34:45SPEAKER_00: was a sacred woman who came to the Lakota people.
- 34:54SPEAKER_00: And the Lakota is a name that encompasses many tribes.
- 34:59SPEAKER_00: And she gave seven rights to the people.
- 35:06SPEAKER_00: And she said that it is said that when she left, she transformed into a black buffalo.
- 35:14SPEAKER_00: And then she transformed into a reddish buffalo and then a yellow buffalo and then a white buffalo.
- 35:20SPEAKER_00: And then she disappeared into the clouds.
- 35:23SPEAKER_00: And they say when she returns,
- 35:25SPEAKER_00: when a white buffalo is born,
- 35:27SPEAKER_00: then her magic,
- 35:29SPEAKER_00: her blessing will reappear forever.
- 35:32SPEAKER_00: And I wanted to talk to you about the seven rights that she came with because they're beautiful.
- 35:39SPEAKER_00: I don't know very much about them.
- 35:41SPEAKER_00: So I'm just going to tell you what I do know about them.
- 35:46SPEAKER_00: And yeah, we'll see.
- 35:48SPEAKER_00: We'll see where that takes us.
- 35:50SPEAKER_00: So the first rite is the keeping of the soul.
- 35:54SPEAKER_00: It's a really beautiful tradition where when someone in the community dies,
- 35:59SPEAKER_00: someone else is asked to take care of their soul for a year.
- 36:06SPEAKER_00: So it's almost like taking a vow of purification.
- 36:11SPEAKER_00: So that person lives in a certain way in order to take care of the soul of the
- 36:17SPEAKER_00: person who is transitioning for a year,
- 36:19SPEAKER_00: which I think is a really lovely way of staying connected and supporting the
- 36:25SPEAKER_00: transition of the people and also people.
- 36:29SPEAKER_00: Knowing it takes time, doesn't it, when someone dies and to have someone caretaking.
- 36:36SPEAKER_00: Their soul also feels to me like it's caretaking all the people around who are grieving.
- 36:41SPEAKER_00: Yeah, it just feels like a supportive thing to do.
- 36:47SPEAKER_00: And the second is the rite of purification.
- 36:50SPEAKER_00: And so in these traditions, there's something called the temescal, the sweat lodge.
- 36:56SPEAKER_00: And I've done quite a few sweat lodges.
- 36:59SPEAKER_00: I do have the blessing to run sweat lodges, which I might do at some point.
- 37:05SPEAKER_00: But it's not something I've done so far.
- 37:10SPEAKER_00: But I have found when I've...
- 37:12SPEAKER_00: entered sweat what I know from my experience of being in sweat lodges is that they
- 37:18SPEAKER_00: are willow poles bent over and they traditionally have hides covering so that
- 37:25SPEAKER_00: little they're like little igloos but they often these days have blankets around
- 37:32SPEAKER_00: and they have hot stones that have been
- 37:35SPEAKER_00: They've been in the center of a fire, these hot stones.
- 37:38SPEAKER_00: So they're really red hot.
- 37:40SPEAKER_00: They actually are glowing red, these stones.
- 37:43SPEAKER_00: And there is a bowl,
- 37:46SPEAKER_00: a hole that has been made in the center of the Temazcal with the sweat lodge with
- 37:52SPEAKER_00: an altar around like a
- 37:54SPEAKER_00: the whole altar's like a half moon it's like the the red hot stones represent the
- 38:00SPEAKER_00: sun and then the altar represents the moon and people come into the sweat lodge i'm
- 38:07SPEAKER_00: not going to go through the whole getting a bit carried away so i'm not going to go
- 38:11SPEAKER_00: through the whole ceremony but basically you go in on your hands and knees and
- 38:15SPEAKER_00: You take a blessing and it's like being in a sauna.
- 38:19SPEAKER_00: The stones are so hot and you sweat and you sing and you pray and you sing and you sweat and you pray.
- 38:25SPEAKER_00: It's a very, very beautiful way.
- 38:28SPEAKER_00: Imagine a whole village or your whole family once a month when the moon is full or a certain time.
- 38:33SPEAKER_00: coming and doing that.
- 38:36SPEAKER_00: It's a really good way to,
- 38:38SPEAKER_00: anything that's been building up to let go of,
- 38:42SPEAKER_00: it's a really good way of cleaning on all levels.
- 38:46SPEAKER_00: The third rite is called crying for a vision and it's around vision quests and going,
- 38:54SPEAKER_00: if you've got something that you're really
- 38:56SPEAKER_00: confused by or really seek an answer to,
- 38:58SPEAKER_00: to go out by yourself and be with that question and you may have some insights or
- 39:10SPEAKER_00: some understandings and then to go back to the person in the village who or the
- 39:16SPEAKER_00: person who you trust most to share those visions with to support you in this way
- 39:21SPEAKER_00: and there's many different ways of
- 39:23SPEAKER_00: And vision questing and many different people do it in many different ways.
- 39:30SPEAKER_00: But I've been really feeling the rightness of that right now.
- 39:35SPEAKER_00: And I feel like there's a place in me around parenting that needs to grow.
- 39:40SPEAKER_00: And I think if I went out into the woods and spent a night or two out in the woods
- 39:44SPEAKER_00: by myself,
- 39:45SPEAKER_00: that the vastness of the trees,
- 39:47SPEAKER_00: that the ancientness of the stones,
- 39:50SPEAKER_00: that somewhere I could get what I needed to grow a place within me.
- 39:54SPEAKER_00: So that's something I'll be doing pretty soon.
- 39:57SPEAKER_00: And the next is the Sundance.
- 39:59SPEAKER_00: I've never been to a Sundance,
- 40:00SPEAKER_00: but there's a whole ritual around choosing a tree and then a man is chosen,
- 40:07SPEAKER_00: right?
- 40:08SPEAKER_00: to cut that tree down and that tree
- 40:11SPEAKER_00: never touches the ground as it's been cut down and it gets put in the centre of a
- 40:15SPEAKER_00: dance ground and people dance and dance and dance around that tree.
- 40:21SPEAKER_00: The next rite is the making of relatives.
- 40:25SPEAKER_00: There's a tradition that she introduced in this prophecy around being able to,
- 40:32SPEAKER_00: you can paint your face a certain colour,
- 40:35SPEAKER_00: you can create ritual,
- 40:36SPEAKER_00: but the making of relatives where everyone is welcome.
- 40:40SPEAKER_00: Everyone is welcome.
- 40:41SPEAKER_00: There aren't these tribes that are segregated that you belong to one tribe and you
- 40:45SPEAKER_00: don't belong to another.
- 40:46SPEAKER_00: You can become a relation of any tribe, of any family at any point by choosing to.
- 40:54SPEAKER_00: And that feels good for me.
- 40:56SPEAKER_00: I can feel the expansiveness of that.
- 41:00SPEAKER_00: And also there's two more.
- 41:03SPEAKER_00: The girls coming of age ritual feels so, so potent and so beautiful.
- 41:11SPEAKER_00: I'm so glad that that tradition is coming back in our culture.
- 41:17SPEAKER_00: It's very normal.
- 41:18SPEAKER_00: now for a young girl,
- 41:20SPEAKER_00: I think,
- 41:21SPEAKER_00: when she begins to bleed,
- 41:22SPEAKER_00: when her body starts to change,
- 41:24SPEAKER_00: to have some kind of ritual,
- 41:25SPEAKER_00: some kind of ceremony,
- 41:26SPEAKER_00: some kind of celebration.
- 41:28SPEAKER_00: And may we continue to unravel and expand and create ways to honour and celebrate
- 41:35SPEAKER_00: our young people as they come into their power.
- 41:38SPEAKER_00: And the last one,
- 41:39SPEAKER_00: which I didn't know about,
- 41:41SPEAKER_00: which I'm so,
- 41:42SPEAKER_00: so excited about,
- 41:44SPEAKER_00: because it's something I do a lot in my storytelling,
- 41:47SPEAKER_00: is the throwing of balls.
- 41:49SPEAKER_00: And so they have a practice where, when I say they have, I mean that the...
- 41:56SPEAKER_00: This is one of the prophecies of the white buffalo calf woman,
- 42:00SPEAKER_00: that she brought these rights to the people that they continue to practice,
- 42:05SPEAKER_00: that they have this practice of the throwing of the ball,
- 42:08SPEAKER_00: that they throw it forwards and backwards in every direction to show that you can
- 42:15SPEAKER_00: throw something out.
- 42:17SPEAKER_00: to a direction, to an element, to spirit, and it will come back to you.
- 42:21SPEAKER_00: So they throw it and return it and throw it and return it and throw it and return
- 42:25SPEAKER_00: it and throw it and return it.
- 42:27SPEAKER_00: And then they throw it up in the air and it is returned to show that spirit,
- 42:31SPEAKER_00: the mystery,
- 42:32SPEAKER_00: answers your calls,
- 42:34SPEAKER_00: that something is returned.
- 42:36SPEAKER_00: And I've done this for years in my storytelling,
- 42:38SPEAKER_00: the beginning of my storytelling,
- 42:40SPEAKER_00: where particularly if I'm storytelling with loads of children and they don't know
- 42:43SPEAKER_00: each other,
- 42:44SPEAKER_00: which I don't do so much anymore,
- 42:46SPEAKER_00: but I have been doing this weekend.
- 42:48SPEAKER_00: And I get a ball.
- 42:49SPEAKER_00: Sometimes I have to use my car keys because I've forgotten to bring my ball.
- 42:52SPEAKER_00: That kind of ups the danger a bit.
- 42:54SPEAKER_00: But I throw it out and they say their names and I throw it back.
- 42:58SPEAKER_00: And it feels very, very simple, but it weaves something.
- 43:02SPEAKER_00: And then they start throwing the ball.
- 43:04SPEAKER_00: I say their names and I throw it to them.
- 43:07SPEAKER_00: And then they say their names and they throw it to someone else.
- 43:10SPEAKER_00: But then they start getting braver and they start throwing the ball to people whose
- 43:15SPEAKER_00: names they don't know and finding out their names.
- 43:17SPEAKER_00: And as the ball gets thrown, I promise you, it's like weaving, weaving, weaving, weaving.
- 43:25SPEAKER_00: I can see it.
- 43:26SPEAKER_00: I can see these threads of connection being made.
- 43:30SPEAKER_00: And to add to that,
- 43:32SPEAKER_00: to do this practice of throwing the ball to the directions and throwing it up to spirit,
- 43:37SPEAKER_00: I feel really thrilled now.
- 43:39SPEAKER_00: to be able to practice that.
- 43:42SPEAKER_00: And I've got plenty of opportunities to practice that because I'm going to go to
- 43:46SPEAKER_00: Dance Camp Wales tomorrow to tell stories for 10 days,
- 43:51SPEAKER_00: to tell bedtime stories to children for 10 days.
- 43:56SPEAKER_00: Most of my work now is with adults,
- 43:59SPEAKER_00: so I feel really blessed that I get these times in the summer that I can go to
- 44:04SPEAKER_00: working with children again.
- 44:06SPEAKER_00: And this weekend I've been telling stories at the Toll Puddle Martyrs Festival.
- 44:12SPEAKER_00: And the next podcast that I do will be about the Toll Puddle Martyrs and it'll be
- 44:19SPEAKER_00: about PJ Harvey as well.
- 44:22SPEAKER_00: Explain to you what they have in common.
- 44:26SPEAKER_00: But that won't be the next podcast because I'm doing something really,
- 44:30SPEAKER_00: really brave and thrilling,
- 44:32SPEAKER_00: exciting and delightful next week in that I'm going to get another storyteller.
- 44:39SPEAKER_00: to hold the podcast for me.
- 44:42SPEAKER_00: She has got my login details.
- 44:44SPEAKER_00: She's going to log into Substack and she is going to download an amazing, I'm sure it will be podcast.
- 44:53SPEAKER_00: I'm not going to tell you her name.
- 44:55SPEAKER_00: I'm going to leave it as a mystery podcast.
- 44:58SPEAKER_00: But when next week's podcast arrives, I am sure you're going to be thrilled to
- 45:07SPEAKER_00: So that's what's happening next week.
- 45:10SPEAKER_00: And I will be back the week after with my Toll Puddle podcast.
- 45:15SPEAKER_00: Maya, thanks for coming on.
- 45:17SPEAKER_00: Thank you, thank you, thank you.
- 45:19SPEAKER_00: Thanks so much for having me, Sarah.
- 45:20SPEAKER_00: Thank you.
- 45:21SPEAKER_00: I really enjoyed it.
- 45:21SPEAKER_00: And you said also that you had a gig this weekend with Dragonsfly.
- 45:26SPEAKER_00: That's your band, isn't it, Dragonsfly?
- 45:28SPEAKER_02: I do, yes.
- 45:29SPEAKER_00: Where is it?
- 45:30SPEAKER_02: It's at the Assembly Rooms in Glastonbury as part of the Goddess Conference event.
- 45:37SPEAKER_00: Okay, brilliant.
- 45:38SPEAKER_00: And is it Friday night, Saturday night?
- 45:40SPEAKER_02: It's actually Sunday night.
- 45:41SPEAKER_00: Sunday.
- 45:41SPEAKER_02: 7.30 till 9.
- 45:43SPEAKER_02: And we'll be teaching some of the French and Breton dances that we play so everyone
- 45:46SPEAKER_02: can totally join in easily.
- 45:48SPEAKER_02: And you don't have to do them.
- 45:49SPEAKER_02: You can jump up and down as well.
- 45:51SPEAKER_00: Okay, brilliant.
- 45:52SPEAKER_00: Come and dance.
- 45:54SPEAKER_00: Come and dance, guys.
- 45:55SPEAKER_00: Sunday night at the Assembly Rooms.
- 45:58SPEAKER_00: Brilliant.
- 45:59SPEAKER_00: Thanks for coming.

- 46:03SPEAKER_00: Just I've really thoroughly enjoyed being here.
- 46:05SPEAKER_00: Thanks, Sarah.

- 46:10SPEAKER_01: You see, I'm just going to get members one at a time by inviting guests on.
