- 2:07Speaker 3: The four person Please rise, and would you read your verdict? Please?
- 2:12Speaker 1: Shot anger and still the most important of unanswered questions,
- 2:17Speaker 1: where is baby Kate? Young couple Sean Phillips and Ariel
- 2:23Speaker 1: Courtland had one daughter, Haley. When Ariel got pregnant with
- 2:27Speaker 1: their second daughter, Catherine, Reportedly, Phillips didn't want another child
- 2:32Speaker 1: and kept it a secret from his parents. According to Ariel,
- 2:35Speaker 1: Phillips first push to terminate the pregnancy, then adoption. Ariel
- 2:41Speaker 1: didn't want to do either. It was the day Phillips
- 2:44Speaker 1: was supposed to get a paternity test. He had been
- 2:47Speaker 1: denying he was Kate's father. While out, the couple had
- 2:51Speaker 1: been arguing. Back at home, around one pm, Ariel ran
- 2:55Speaker 1: inside to get four month old Kate's stroller while Phillips
- 2:58Speaker 1: and Kate waited in the car. When she came back
- 3:00Speaker 1: out complete horror, Phillips and Kate were gone.
- 3:07Speaker 12: The father and very child took our daughter, and I
- 3:09Speaker 12: don't know where he's at.
- 3:11Speaker 1: Later that afternoon, Luddington police tracked Sean Phillips down at
- 3:15Speaker 1: his parents' house. Kate was nowhere to be found, but
- 3:19Speaker 1: during a routine pat down, cops found her baby clothes
- 3:22Speaker 1: wadded up in Phillips's pocket. Sean Phillips was arrested on
- 3:27Speaker 1: the spot.
- 3:28Speaker 10: I'm sick of warnering where my daughter's at.
- 3:30Speaker 1: An intense search was on for baby Kate.
- 3:34Speaker 13: I'm if she's okay. If she's sitting in her car
- 3:37Speaker 13: seat in the middle of the woods just crying.
- 3:40Speaker 1: While the community was out looking for baby Kate. Cops
- 3:43Speaker 1: were interrogating her father, and he was turning the tables,
- 3:47Speaker 1: pointing the finger at her mother. Do you know where
- 3:49Speaker 1: Catherine is at?
- 3:51Speaker 2: Usually she's as playing right strange like this, You have
- 3:58Speaker 2: no idea where Katherine is?
- 4:02Speaker 1: She knows.
- 4:03Speaker 14: I'm not asking you that I know. I'm not asking
- 4:06Speaker 14: you that, Okay, Sean, I'm not asking you that. I'm
- 4:09Speaker 14: asking you a specific question. Do you know where Catherine
- 4:14Speaker 14: is right now?
- 4:15Speaker 13: Now?
- 4:16Speaker 1: I cops weren't buying it. Sean Phillips was eventually charged
- 4:21Speaker 1: with unlawful imprisonment in the abduction of his daughter, baby Kate.
- 4:25Speaker 1: Phillips trial lasted two weeks on the stand. Ariel testified
- 4:29Speaker 1: to Phillips not wanting a second child.
- 4:32Speaker 9: Going to get an application for an abortion online ashkar Klin.
- 4:36Speaker 13: It was his idea.
- 4:39Speaker 1: And her desperate please for answers.
- 4:42Speaker 13: Why didn't you take me?
- 4:43Speaker 7: You were mad at me, not her.
- 4:44Speaker 3: Wouldn't said you took her.
- 4:46Speaker 13: I'd be willing to go back in time and make
- 4:50Speaker 13: him take me. That meant I knew that Kate was
- 4:53Speaker 13: going to be alive.
- 4:54Speaker 1: Also introduced to trial was an unmailed letter found in
- 4:57Speaker 1: Phillips's shirt pocket. A few weeks after his arrest. In it,
- 5:01Speaker 1: he allegedly wrote, I took Kate and gave her to
- 5:04Speaker 1: a guy. The guy was to leave her on a
- 5:07Speaker 1: doorstep of a couple wanting to adopt, but the guy,
- 5:10Speaker 1: the couple, and Kate were never found. After five and
- 5:15Speaker 1: a half hours of deliberations, we the jury by the
- 5:18Speaker 1: defendant guilty. Sean Phillips was sentenced to ten to fifteen years.
- 5:24Speaker 15: Explanation for her being missing really doesn't wash, and we
- 5:29Speaker 15: need to know what happened to her.
- 5:31Speaker 1: But this was not the end of the story. Coming up,
- 5:35Speaker 1: Sean Phillips goes on trial for murder.
- 5:37Speaker 3: He said he picked the baby up and he got
- 5:39Speaker 3: rid of a baby.
- 5:44Speaker 1: Four month old baby Kate is missing and presumed dead.
- 5:47Speaker 1: Her father, Sean Phillips, who had driven off with her
- 5:50Speaker 1: and was found with her baby clothes in his pocket,
- 5:53Speaker 1: has already been found guilty of unlawful imprisonment and sentenced
- 5:56Speaker 1: to ten to fifteen years.
- 5:58Speaker 16: This is a tragic case, just makes you sick.
- 6:01Speaker 1: Things are about to get a lot worse for Phillips.
- 6:05Speaker 1: One year later, he is charged with murder.
- 6:08Speaker 16: We have evidence that we are convinced will prove beyond
- 6:11Speaker 16: a reasonable doubt that Sean Phillips murdered his own daughter and.
- 6:16Speaker 1: A probable cause. Hearing baby Kate's heartbroken mother, Ariel Courtland,
- 6:20Speaker 1: recounts how she learned Kate was missing.
- 6:22Speaker 13: I asked for Kate was out, if I could come
- 6:24Speaker 13: and get her, and he said no, because Kate wasn't there,
- 6:31Speaker 13: didn't know where she was at.
- 6:33Speaker 1: The defense tried to paint Sean Phillips as a dedicated father.
- 6:37Speaker 3: So everything that you could tell, he was.
- 6:41Speaker 15: Loving and carrie towards Kate.
- 6:43Speaker 13: Yes, I've stated that since say.
- 6:45Speaker 1: One, the courtroom had heard from Ariel, but was now
- 6:49Speaker 1: about to hear Phillips's own words. In a bombshell piece
- 6:53Speaker 1: of new evidence, a few months after Phillips was found
- 6:56Speaker 1: guilty of unlawful imprisonment, a second letter in it a confession.
- 7:01Speaker 11: In that letter, did he give you a version of
- 7:03Speaker 11: events that had happened to Catherine on that.
- 7:06Speaker 1: Fag Yes, Phillips wrote he accidentally killed Kate while yanking
- 7:10Speaker 1: her car seat out of the back of the car,
- 7:13Speaker 1: claiming he thought Ariel had already taken the girl out
- 7:16Speaker 1: of her car seat and into the house. When Ariel's
- 7:19Speaker 1: cell phone, which was stuck behind the car seat wouldn't
- 7:21Speaker 1: stop ringing. He wrote, I grabbed it at the top
- 7:24Speaker 1: and ripped it out as hard as I could. She
- 7:27Speaker 1: was thrown from it. I didn't know. I'm so sorry.
- 7:31Speaker 1: Held her for a long time, seemed forever. Then Phillips wrote,
- 7:35Speaker 1: he left baby Kate in a peaceful place. A fellow
- 7:41Speaker 1: inmate of Phillips also testified to a conversation they had
- 7:45Speaker 1: behind bars.
- 7:46Speaker 3: He said he picked the baby up and got rid
- 7:48Speaker 3: of the baby.
- 7:50Speaker 11: Did you ask him what he meant when he said
- 7:51Speaker 11: he got rid of the baby.
- 7:53Speaker 3: Yeah, he said, Well, I can't be charged because they
- 7:55Speaker 3: won't find the baby.
- 7:58Speaker 1: A few weeks ago, opening arguments began in Sean Phillips's
- 8:01Speaker 1: murder trial.
- 8:02Speaker 11: A helpless baby who the evidence will prove was anything
- 8:08Speaker 11: but daddy's little girl. In fact, she was his dirty
- 8:13Speaker 11: little secret.
- 8:14Speaker 7: There's no blood, no physical evidence, no body.
- 8:17Speaker 16: There's been no direct evidence that there was a death.
- 8:21Speaker 1: Ariel Cortlin, who's already told the terrible story of losing
- 8:24Speaker 1: her precious Keat in court two other times, has to
- 8:27Speaker 1: take the stand again.
- 8:28Speaker 7: What do you recognize that to be Keith's Carcy?
- 8:33Speaker 1: The letters Phillips allegedly wrote to Ariel where he to
- 8:36Speaker 1: the prosecution's case, including the one in which he said
- 8:39Speaker 1: Kate was in a peaceful place. Phillip's mother, Kimberly, was
- 8:43Speaker 1: questioned about that peaceful place?
- 8:46Speaker 11: Did you follow up with your sonist to where the
- 8:49Speaker 11: peaceful place was that he had left? Catherine?
- 8:52Speaker 3: I probably would have asked him that, yes. Did you
- 8:56Speaker 3: on a personal visit with him?
- 8:57Speaker 17: Yes?
- 8:58Speaker 13: Did he tell me anything?
- 9:01Speaker 1: Sean Phillips never took the stand in his own defense.
- 9:05Speaker 1: Then a twist which surprised many, Judge Woodell throughout the
- 9:09Speaker 1: possibility of a first degree murder conviction.
- 9:12Speaker 18: That judge says, there's simply not enough evidence for a
- 9:15Speaker 18: jury to decide if Sean Phillips committed premeditated murder.
- 9:20Speaker 1: After more than three weeks of testimony and three days
- 9:23Speaker 1: of deliberations.
- 9:24Speaker 3: Would you read your verdict please?
- 9:26Speaker 1: The long awaited verdict is in guilty of the murder.
- 9:30Speaker 1: The vision Sean Phillips guilty of killing his own daughter,
- 9:34Speaker 1: baby Kate. Phillips, who could get life in prison, had
- 9:38Speaker 1: no reaction as he left the court room.
- 9:40Speaker 3: Mister Phillips, do you have anything about the verdict?
- 9:42Speaker 1: Others didn't stay as silent.
- 9:44Speaker 16: We're all very thankful to bring justice to baby Kate.
- 9:47Speaker 19: Now's the time for mister Phillips to explain exactly where
- 9:51Speaker 19: Catherine is. There's absolutely no reason in the world to
- 9:55Speaker 19: keep that secret.
- 9:56Speaker 1: The answer to that painful question still remains locid, with
- 10:01Speaker 1: many hoping Phillips will one day lead them to Baby Kate,
- 10:04Speaker 1: lead them to that peaceful place.
- 10:06Speaker 3: Will you ever reveal where baby Kate did?
- 10:11Speaker 1: Coming up Just two days away from her twenty second birthday,
- 10:15Speaker 1: a college student disappeared.
- 10:17Speaker 6: My fiance is missing. I can't find her anywhere.
- 10:21Speaker 1: And when the case takes a grisly turn, a private
- 10:24Speaker 1: investigator goes undercover to question the heartbroken fiance. What he
- 10:28Speaker 1: says happened the day Caitlyn disappeared.
- 10:31Speaker 20: In my investigative opinion that he knew she was gone
- 10:35Speaker 20: prior to him going into the to the house.
- 10:39Speaker 1: That's next now to Ohio where a young college student
- 10:45Speaker 1: is reported missing by our fiance and something doesn't sit right.
- 10:49Speaker 1: Her keys, her purse are still in the house. Our
- 10:52Speaker 1: Pala Lama has more on the Caitlin Markham mystery.
- 10:56Speaker 10: It's two days before arts did into Caitlin Markham's twent
- 11:00Speaker 10: second birthday, but sadly she will never celebrate it.
- 11:05Speaker 6: Mamas are imagine the same part. My name is John Carter.
- 11:09Speaker 6: I know that you're not supposed to report a missing
- 11:11Speaker 6: person after before twenty four hours, but my fiance is missing.
- 11:16Speaker 6: I can't find her anywhere.
- 11:18Speaker 7: Okay, where'd you fear last?
- 11:20Speaker 6: I saw her at like twelve o'clock last night.
- 11:23Speaker 10: It's been eighteen hours since John Carter says he last
- 11:26Speaker 10: saw his fiance, Caitlin Markham alive. Panicked, John calls his
- 11:32Speaker 10: future father in law, David Markham.
- 11:34Speaker 2: He immediately screamed into the phone, Caitlyn's missing.
- 11:39Speaker 10: David races to his daughter's place and he's met there
- 11:42Speaker 10: by Detective Rebecca Irvin.
- 11:44Speaker 18: When we got to Caitlin's condo, there's no signs of
- 11:46Speaker 18: forced entry into the town. When we checked the doors,
- 11:49Speaker 18: check the windows, check everywhere, there's nothing that's jumping out.
- 11:51Speaker 18: There's no signs of a struggle.
- 11:54Speaker 10: Inside Caitlin's bedroom, investigators from the Fairfield Police Department discovered
- 11:59Speaker 10: Caitlyn's purse and car keys laying in the center of
- 12:02Speaker 10: her bed. Also in the bedroom is her dog, Murphy.
- 12:06Speaker 2: The dog had been locked in her bedroom, which she's
- 12:10Speaker 2: not usually locked in the bedroom, and he had gone
- 12:12Speaker 2: to the bathroom in there, her purse and her keys
- 12:15Speaker 2: were smacked AaB in the middle of her bed. If
- 12:17Speaker 2: I'm going to bed, I don't put something right in
- 12:18Speaker 2: the middle of it. Nothing seemed to make any sense
- 12:22Speaker 2: at all.
- 12:23Speaker 10: Fairfield Police agree.
- 12:24Speaker 18: Something's not right here, and again based on what her
- 12:28Speaker 18: friends and family were telling us, this isn't normal for
- 12:30Speaker 18: this girl.
- 12:32Speaker 10: Fairfield police speculate about the possibility of Caitlyn running away.
- 12:37Speaker 1: No, not Caitlin. She was graduating in three.
- 12:41Speaker 10: Weeks, graduating from art school, engaged and getting ready to
- 12:45Speaker 10: move to Colorado with her fiance.
- 12:48Speaker 2: And this was not for her. Not to call anybody,
- 12:50Speaker 2: for not to do anything. I felt something was wrong,
- 12:55Speaker 2: very very wrong.
- 12:57Speaker 10: So where is Caitlin Beyonce. John Carter, who was the
- 13:02Speaker 10: last known person to see her alive, breaks down his
- 13:05Speaker 10: final moments with Caitlyn to detectives.
- 13:07Speaker 18: They had had another friend over at the apartment earlier,
- 13:11Speaker 18: and then he had left, and then John had left
- 13:14Speaker 18: and gone to a party. At that point, everything that
- 13:17Speaker 18: we had initially there was no fighting.
- 13:19Speaker 10: Guess that depends on who you ask. Caitlyn's best friend, Michelle,
- 13:25Speaker 10: claims that just two days before Caitlyn went missing, the
- 13:29Speaker 10: couple had been fighting about money, and the heated disagreement
- 13:33Speaker 10: came to a head at a church festival.
- 13:35Speaker 17: I saw her on the Friday night at the Sacred
- 13:38Speaker 17: Heart Festival. It's the last time that I saw her.
- 13:41Speaker 7: And talked to her.
- 13:42Speaker 17: He I guess had bought raffle tickets, like one hundred
- 13:46Speaker 17: dollars in raffle tickets, and she was mad about it,
- 13:49Speaker 17: like she was pissed off.
- 13:50Speaker 10: In fact, so upset. Michelle says, Caitlyn left the festival early.
- 13:55Speaker 17: I feel like they would fight about it just behind
- 13:57Speaker 17: closed doors because they didn't like to, like like at
- 13:59Speaker 17: the like, they didn't want to be arguing about it
- 14:02Speaker 17: in front of everybody.
- 14:04Speaker 10: And whatever is kept behind closed doors is anybody's guests.
- 14:08Speaker 10: But one thing's for sure. Two days later, Caitlin was gone.
- 14:14Speaker 18: Yeah.
- 14:14Speaker 17: I mean it's completely like she was my best friend.
- 14:17Speaker 17: Like I haven't had many girlfriends ever, she was really
- 14:20Speaker 17: my only friend and her being gone is completely shattered
- 14:25Speaker 17: my whole world.
- 14:28Speaker 10: Twenty heartbreaking months past, then a break in the case.
- 14:33Speaker 21: A husband and wife that were looking for metal to
- 14:36Speaker 21: recycle along the Big Ceedar Road in Franklin County, Indiana.
- 14:40Speaker 21: While they were searching for the metals, they located some
- 14:44Speaker 21: human bones and I was called to investigate the remains.
- 14:50Speaker 10: Twenty five miles away in Indiana, skeletal remains are found
- 14:55Speaker 10: covered with trash in an area known for dumping. Crime
- 14:59Speaker 10: scene investigator just rushed away de breathe to reveal several bones,
- 15:03Speaker 10: including a skull and jawbone.
- 15:05Speaker 21: When we were looking at the skull, we noticed a
- 15:08Speaker 21: tooth that was protruding, pretty identifiable, and so one of
- 15:15Speaker 21: the Kunty Sheriff's deputies he he got on his phone
- 15:19Speaker 21: and started looking for anybody that was missing.
- 15:22Speaker 10: In a serendipitous moment, Caitlin Markham's photo is the first
- 15:27Speaker 10: to pop up.
- 15:28Speaker 21: When we looked at the picture of her missing report,
- 15:34Speaker 21: we could almost identify her directly from her from her teeth.
- 15:39Speaker 10: The local forensic anthropologists will positively I d the remains
- 15:44Speaker 10: as belonging to Caitlin Markham.
- 15:49Speaker 2: A couple of days later, I get a knock on
- 15:51Speaker 2: the door from the pastor and the and the detective and.
- 15:58Speaker 10: If they were there to tell me, But how in
- 16:01Speaker 10: the world did Caitlyn end up dead in a trash
- 16:03Speaker 10: heap in Indiana. Residents in the small town of Fairfield,
- 16:07Speaker 10: Ohio are desperate for answers. When an anonymous donor with
- 16:12Speaker 10: no connection to the case, who has a keen interest
- 16:15Speaker 10: in finding justice and unsolved mysteries, makes a huge donation,
- 16:20Speaker 10: that money brings in private investigator Jay Ryan Green.
- 16:23Speaker 20: He's an individual that wanted to do something nice for
- 16:26Speaker 20: somebody before he died, is what he told me. Felt
- 16:29Speaker 20: Caitlyn needed an outside investigator to come in and take
- 16:34Speaker 20: a fresh look at the case.
- 16:37Speaker 10: A fresh look that starts with a fresh Listen to
- 16:40Speaker 10: the nine to one one call made by John Carter
- 16:43Speaker 10: on the night he reported his fiance missing.
- 16:46Speaker 20: John misrepresented the truth in a nine to one one
- 16:49Speaker 20: call with his own statements.
- 16:51Speaker 10: Up next, in a Crime Watch Daily exclusive, private investigator
- 16:55Speaker 10: Green discovers new evidence and reveals it only to there.
- 17:01Speaker 20: Was evidence of blood in the trunk area.
- 17:05Speaker 10: Then Crime Watch Daily goes undercover with hidden cameras to
- 17:09Speaker 10: confront the person who made that nine to one one call.
- 17:13Speaker 10: Will this new information exonerate an innocent man or expose
- 17:17Speaker 10: a murderer?
- 17:19Speaker 1: I want to rule you out, but I can't now.
- 17:23Speaker 1: Back to the Caitlin Markham mystery. The young art student's
- 17:26Speaker 1: body was found twenty months after she was reported missing.
- 17:29Speaker 1: Her father believes Caitlyn's fiance knows more than he's saying.
- 17:32Speaker 20: Well.
- 17:33Speaker 1: Today, crime Watch Daily has an exclusive look at key
- 17:36Speaker 1: evidence that could break this case wide open. Here's pat Lallana.
- 17:41Speaker 10: Beautiful. Twenty one year old Caitlin Markham's body is in
- 17:45Speaker 10: a heap tossed in a dumping ground found in a
- 17:48Speaker 10: remote part of Indiana, but how she got there is
- 17:53Speaker 10: still a mystery. Now, an anonymous donor who is not
- 17:59Speaker 10: connected to the case but claims to have a keen
- 18:01Speaker 10: interest in finding justice, has reportedly put up big money
- 18:06Speaker 10: to help find her killer. Private investigator Jay Ryan Green
- 18:10Speaker 10: jumps on the case. Green goes back to the beginning,
- 18:13Speaker 10: the nine one one call made by Caitlyn's fiance, John
- 18:17Speaker 10: Carter on the night she went missing.
- 18:20Speaker 6: The car is still there, the purse still and you're
- 18:23Speaker 6: out there now. I'm heading out there now. I like
- 18:27Speaker 6: had been trying to get a hold of her, and
- 18:29Speaker 6: I decided to go by her house to see she
- 18:31Speaker 6: was okay, and her car was still there, which is
- 18:33Speaker 6: why I'm like, really freaking out.
- 18:35Speaker 10: John has just told the nine one one operator that
- 18:38Speaker 10: Caitlyn's car and purse are at her home. Yet when
- 18:42Speaker 10: the nine one one operator asks if he's there, he
- 18:45Speaker 10: says he's on his way. Green wonders how would Carter
- 18:51Speaker 10: know about her car and purse if he wasn't even
- 18:53Speaker 10: there yet.
- 18:54Speaker 20: John misrepresented the truth in a nine one one call
- 18:58Speaker 20: with his own statements.
- 18:59Speaker 10: Adding green suspicion. He says in police interviews, John claimed
- 19:04Speaker 10: he went by Caitlin's house, first, ran an errand, and
- 19:07Speaker 10: then called nine to one one. Green asks, who does that?
- 19:12Speaker 10: Then he calls this portion of John's nine one one
- 19:15Speaker 10: call into question.
- 19:16Speaker 6: Okay, and you guys didn't have an argument or anything,
- 19:19Speaker 6: not at all.
- 19:20Speaker 10: Not at all. Caitlyn's best friend, Michelle tells quite a
- 19:25Speaker 10: different story.
- 19:26Speaker 17: I knew that they were fighting, and when he was
- 19:29Speaker 17: like on the nine one one tape when he was
- 19:31Speaker 17: saying that it that they hadn't been arguing at all,
- 19:35Speaker 17: I'm just like, why would you lie about that part
- 19:38Speaker 17: of it?
- 19:39Speaker 20: When the dispatcher asked John if Caitlyn and him had
- 19:42Speaker 20: been fighting, he said, no, not at all. You're telling
- 19:45Speaker 20: a dispatcher that you weren't in a fight, and you
- 19:48Speaker 20: were in a fight.
- 19:50Speaker 10: The Markham family attorney also listened to the nine to
- 19:53Speaker 10: one one call.
- 19:54Speaker 5: I was a firefighter and a paramedic before I was
- 19:57Speaker 5: a lawyer, and I have I've heard my share.
- 20:02Speaker 11: Of nine one one calls.
- 20:04Speaker 4: I've made nine one one calls.
- 20:06Speaker 5: And a nine to one one call is usually a
- 20:10Speaker 5: call for help. That's what it is, call for help.
- 20:15Speaker 5: John Carter's call was a call to.
- 20:18Speaker 10: Inform, inform, inform what and to whom. The nine one
- 20:24Speaker 10: one call continues, and.
- 20:26Speaker 6: Then take her heart. Festival is going on right up
- 20:28Speaker 6: the street and there's a lot of questionable people there.
- 20:33Speaker 5: He immediately offered up a fury. You noticed an hour
- 20:38Speaker 5: ago that your girlfriend isn't where she's supposed to be
- 20:41Speaker 5: and the Carneyes took her.
- 20:45Speaker 4: I mean that's a leap.
- 20:47Speaker 10: Police say no one has been ruled out in this
- 20:50Speaker 10: case as a person of interest. Caleb's fiance took a
- 20:53Speaker 10: voice stress analysis test and that was reportedly inconclusive. He
- 20:59Speaker 10: also took two holographs and authorities are not releasing those results.
- 21:03Speaker 10: But private investigator Green believes where Caitlyn's body was found
- 21:08Speaker 10: is a huge piece of the puzzle.
- 21:10Speaker 20: This was an illegal dump site where she was found,
- 21:13Speaker 20: So somebody knew about the dump site and somebody just
- 21:17Speaker 20: tossed her here like a piece.
- 21:18Speaker 10: Of trash somebody.
- 21:20Speaker 20: It troubles me a lot to know that. You know,
- 21:25Speaker 20: the Carter family has property in this area.
- 21:29Speaker 3: That's right.
- 21:30Speaker 10: This spot is just minutes away from John Carter's family home. Coincidence,
- 21:36Speaker 10: Green doesn't think so.
- 21:38Speaker 20: This road is in close proximity to where John Carter
- 21:41Speaker 20: would have traveled to go to his family's property.
- 21:46Speaker 10: Police investigators believe Caitlyn died in Ohio and her body
- 21:50Speaker 10: was dumped here in Indiana. Green thinks the killer needed
- 21:53Speaker 10: some help moving the body and has a theory.
- 21:56Speaker 20: There was a friend at Caitlyn's apartment besides John Carter
- 22:00Speaker 20: the last night she was seen. That friend left a
- 22:04Speaker 20: little earlier than John did.
- 22:06Speaker 10: Supposedly, that's right, the night Caitlyn went missing. The couple
- 22:11Speaker 10: was not alone. Fairfield Police say they had company. A
- 22:15Speaker 10: detective tells us it was a long time childhood friend
- 22:19Speaker 10: of John's named Brad von Bargen.
- 22:21Speaker 20: Now, he drove a car that he referred to as
- 22:26Speaker 20: his baby, and I found out that he no longer
- 22:30Speaker 20: had his baby. He sold it in twenty thirteen, just
- 22:34Speaker 20: after Caitlyn was found. He sold it in a rush
- 22:38Speaker 20: and said that he needed to leave to go to
- 22:41Speaker 20: North Carolina.
- 22:43Speaker 10: The PI set out to find it. This car, the
- 22:47Speaker 10: nineteen ninety seven Green Accura that Green says Brad was
- 22:50Speaker 10: driving the night he left Caitlyn's homes.
- 22:53Speaker 20: I tracked it down and.
- 22:54Speaker 10: He's revealing this all new evidence only to Crime Watch Daily.
- 22:58Speaker 20: I had it sent to as a crime scene. They
- 23:02Speaker 20: did a lumino test. There was evidence of blood in
- 23:07Speaker 20: the trunk area.
- 23:09Speaker 10: Yes, blood in the trunk of the car once owned
- 23:12Speaker 10: by the man Green believes was the second to last
- 23:15Speaker 10: known person to ever see Caitlin Markham alive. Unfortunately, this
- 23:20Speaker 10: potential break in the case may have come too late.
- 23:24Speaker 20: I obtained a vehicle almost four years later. You have
- 23:28Speaker 20: extreme cold in Cincinnati, and you have hot weather with
- 23:36Speaker 20: the cleaning of the vehicle, shampooing. That messes with DNA,
- 23:42Speaker 20: that messes with blood.
- 23:44Speaker 10: Despite what the private investigator thinks, the Fairfield Police Department
- 23:48Speaker 10: tells Crime Watch Daily it does not believe Brad was involved,
- 23:53Speaker 10: but Detective Irvin says she can't officially clear anyone because
- 23:57Speaker 10: this is an ongoing investigation. Green is still frustrated the
- 24:02Speaker 10: car wasn't tested at the time of Caitlin's disappearance.
- 24:05Speaker 15: The members of the police department are aware of the
- 24:09Speaker 15: family's criticism, but I think every agency that has looked
- 24:13Speaker 15: at this case has reviewed it with us demonstrate that
- 24:19Speaker 15: we have done everything that modern police investigative techniques require.
- 24:26Speaker 20: Was that the vehicle that Kaitlin Markham was transported in.
- 24:29Speaker 10: We'll never know, but the determined PI is not giving up,
- 24:34Speaker 10: and he gets his hands on another piece of vital evidence.
- 24:37Speaker 10: It's never been released to the public until now, cell
- 24:41Speaker 10: phone records from the night Caitlin went missing.
- 24:44Speaker 20: I got an insight to this case that no one
- 24:46Speaker 20: else would have because that's my job. I'm a private investigator,
- 24:51Speaker 20: that's what I do.
- 24:53Speaker 10: Investigator Green claims this cell phone timeline contradicts previous statements
- 24:58Speaker 10: John made to police. In recent months. John hasn't been
- 25:02Speaker 10: talking to authorities, but he agrees to meet with private
- 25:05Speaker 10: investigator Green and only Crime Watch Daily has hidden cameras
- 25:09Speaker 10: set up and ready to roll. John and his mother, Karen,
- 25:13Speaker 10: joined Investigator Green and his associate for the interview.
- 25:16Speaker 16: Hey John, how are you good?
- 25:20Speaker 3: Been a while?
- 25:21Speaker 10: Investigator Green introduces a timeline comparing cell phone records and
- 25:26Speaker 10: John's earlier interviews to authorities concerning the night Caitlyn went missing.
- 25:31Speaker 10: First up, investigator Green questions a text in John's interview
- 25:36Speaker 10: with police, he claims he sent a good morning text
- 25:39Speaker 10: to Caitlin on the day she went missing, but according
- 25:43Speaker 10: to cell phone records obtained by investigator Green, he did not.
- 25:47Speaker 12: I do believe that I had sent her a message
- 25:50Speaker 12: before I went to bed, But according to the Fairfield
- 25:54Speaker 12: Police or according to my phone records, I didn't send
- 25:57Speaker 12: her anything.
- 25:58Speaker 4: But I could have swore that I have sent her.
- 26:00Speaker 20: I yeah, there isn't anything.
- 26:02Speaker 10: But John's mother is quick to point out that the
- 26:04Speaker 10: nine to one one call that John mayde is also
- 26:07Speaker 10: missing from the cell phone record.
- 26:09Speaker 11: That's a call we know he made. Nobody's questioning that,
- 26:12Speaker 11: and yet it doesn't show up. Okay, how can we
- 26:16Speaker 11: say that just because something else isn't showing up, that
- 26:18Speaker 11: there wasn't something else.
- 26:21Speaker 10: Next, investigator Green brings up the phone called John may
- 26:24Speaker 10: to his friend Matt on the night Caitlyn disappeared. According
- 26:28Speaker 10: to statements John made to police, he was on the
- 26:31Speaker 10: phone with Matt when he was driving up to Caitlyn's
- 26:34Speaker 10: town home and discovered her car in the driveway and
- 26:36Speaker 10: became concerned.
- 26:38Speaker 20: Stop signs here, You turn the corner, you go up
- 26:41Speaker 20: to the drive and you park.
- 26:43Speaker 16: You walk across so that the way you remember it okay.
- 26:47Speaker 10: But and this is a huge butt according to investigator Green,
- 26:52Speaker 10: as noted in the cell phone records, John hangs up
- 26:55Speaker 10: with his friend Matt, and thirty eight seconds later he
- 26:58Speaker 10: calls Caitlyn's dad, screaming that Caitlyn is missing.
- 27:02Speaker 20: You called David Markham thirty eight seconds after you hung
- 27:07Speaker 20: up with Matt. You and I have even had time
- 27:09Speaker 20: to go in the house for thirty eight seconds. If
- 27:11Speaker 20: you're in the parking lot, you would have had a
- 27:13Speaker 20: chance to even go into caitlyn drome. In thirt eight seconds,
- 27:16Speaker 20: he didn't have time to get in the front door,
- 27:18Speaker 20: much less even go to her room to see if.
- 27:20Speaker 17: She was there.
- 27:21Speaker 10: That's thirty eight seconds to park, walk across the street,
- 27:25Speaker 10: enter her condo, look around, and then declare to her
- 27:29Speaker 10: father that Caitlin is missing.
- 27:32Speaker 3: Again.
- 27:32Speaker 12: I don't remember the exact order of when I called people, but.
- 27:35Speaker 10: The exact order in which he called people is in
- 27:37Speaker 10: black and white on the cell phone record, and it suggests.
- 27:42Speaker 20: In my investigative opinion, that he knew she was gone
- 27:46Speaker 20: prior to him going into to the house.
- 27:50Speaker 10: But whether John Carter has a poor memory or guilty conscience,
- 27:54Speaker 10: only time will tell.
- 27:56Speaker 3: P I.
- 27:56Speaker 10: Green thinks he's on to something, though, And while he
- 27:59Speaker 10: said the anonymous donor is no longer paying him, he
- 28:03Speaker 10: plans to stay on the case for Caitlin's sake.
- 28:06Speaker 20: They need peace and the only way they're gonna get
- 28:09Speaker 20: peace is if this case is solved.
- 28:13Speaker 1: And while Caitlin's dad certainly has his theories on what
- 28:16Speaker 1: happened to his daughter, he says the most important thing
- 28:19Speaker 1: is that anyone with hard facts about Caitlin's murder needs
- 28:22Speaker 1: to call the Fairfield Police. That number is five one,
- 28:25Speaker 1: three eight two nine eight two zero one coming up.
- 28:30Speaker 1: She wanted to be a fashion model, but those dreams
- 28:33Speaker 1: would disappear the same day she did.
- 28:36Speaker 7: No one heard from her again after that day.
- 28:38Speaker 1: Was the nineteen year old lured to her death with
- 28:41Speaker 1: the promise of fame. The investigation that goes from the
- 28:44Speaker 1: mountains of Colorado to the suburbs of Long Island, New York.
- 28:47Speaker 7: This person urged us to drop everything immediately.
- 28:52Speaker 1: That's coming up. Coming up later in today's show, a
- 28:58Speaker 1: young lingerie model disappearance. We're in Colorado with the search
- 29:02Speaker 1: for Kara Nichols. That's coming up, and here's a look
- 29:05Speaker 1: at what else we're working on. It's eight fifty seven PM.
- 29:09Speaker 1: But this guy is still wearing his sunglasses and police
- 29:12Speaker 1: believe they know why.
- 29:13Speaker 4: The suspect the scene entering and leaving the apartment complex.
- 29:17Speaker 1: An aspiring young model killed in her apartment.
- 29:19Speaker 4: It appeared to be a pretty vicious attacker.
- 29:22Speaker 1: Her boyfriend wants under suspicion.
- 29:24Speaker 4: Well, certainly we haven't ruled him out as a suspect.
- 29:27Speaker 1: A manhunt for a mystery murder suspect.
- 29:30Speaker 7: I'm still scared of that to be.
- 29:31Speaker 1: Next, we're in Houston with the latest on who killed
- 29:34Speaker 1: Shelby Thornburgh. Then, a crime writer goes on a mission
- 29:38Speaker 1: to find the man who attacked her. The man had
- 29:41Speaker 1: said to me, do you want to die now? After
- 29:44Speaker 1: more than twenty years of searching, she's fondly about to
- 29:47Speaker 1: find out who he is.
- 29:48Speaker 5: I think that was incredible stroke of block.
- 29:51Speaker 1: A story that will inspire you and make you angry
- 29:54Speaker 1: at the same time. Here you have DNA samples that
- 29:58Speaker 1: do prove this the he did it.
- 30:01Speaker 4: And it gets to go free.
- 30:02Speaker 1: The real life story of Jane Doe. January tomorrow. Now
- 30:08Speaker 1: to Colorado, where a young model heading to a new
- 30:11Speaker 1: photoshoot disappears. Now police and her family are wondering if
- 30:15Speaker 1: she was the victim of a photographer, term predator, or
- 30:18Speaker 1: something else entirely. Leggy, blonde, lingerie model Kara Nichols had
- 30:24Speaker 1: all the right moves to make her way in the
- 30:26Speaker 1: world of fashion. The Colorado beauty with the hourglass figure
- 30:30Speaker 1: and seductive smile told her family she was going on
- 30:33Speaker 1: a fashion shoot in Denver, but she never made it there.
- 30:37Speaker 7: No one heard from her again after that day.
- 30:40Speaker 1: Cops say it wasn't a fashion shoot.
- 30:43Speaker 19: It's my understanding at the beginning of the investigation that
- 30:46Speaker 19: Kara was going to the Denver metro area for a
- 30:49Speaker 19: photo shoot, that none of the information led to that
- 30:52Speaker 19: being truthful.
- 30:54Speaker 1: Carra's parents, Julia and Paul Nichols rue the day their
- 30:57Speaker 1: daughters signed up on Model Mayhew networking website that hooks
- 31:01Speaker 1: up models with photographers. They want police to talk to
- 31:05Speaker 1: the man who took these shots in Colorado Springs and
- 31:09Speaker 1: anyone Caara may have met on the site.
- 31:12Speaker 7: Maybe this was more alternative modeling, small time website types
- 31:16Speaker 7: of things.
- 31:18Speaker 1: Her profile on model Mayhem, which has since been taken down,
- 31:21Speaker 1: read my name is Caara and I'm nineteen years old
- 31:24Speaker 1: and although I'm new to it, modeling is something I
- 31:27Speaker 1: am very passionate about, and I take my work seriously.
- 31:31Speaker 7: I think what she did have might not have been
- 31:33Speaker 7: professional or quite what it seemed.
- 31:39Speaker 1: Cara was living in Colorado Springs, one thousand miles from
- 31:42Speaker 1: her parents' home in Chicago. Like many teenagers, she had
- 31:45Speaker 1: gone through some rough patches through high school, but she
- 31:48Speaker 1: was turning her life around.
- 31:50Speaker 7: I think modeling for Kara was a mask, was a
- 31:53Speaker 7: way to step into a different identity.
- 31:57Speaker 1: So it was good news when she phoned her big
- 31:59Speaker 1: brother about a mile gig in Denver, it was just
- 32:02Speaker 1: the break Kara needed. That night, Car's roommate saw her
- 32:06Speaker 1: driving away he thought with a girlfriend. He assumed she
- 32:10Speaker 1: was going to her much anticipated appointment, but Cara's big
- 32:14Speaker 1: break turned into her parents heartbreak. Cara's big brother, who
- 32:19Speaker 1: lived nearby, went to the local sheriff's department to file
- 32:22Speaker 1: a missing person's report.
- 32:24Speaker 7: He was told to just sit tight, that she was
- 32:27Speaker 7: an adult and they didn't want to be needlessly alarmed,
- 32:32Speaker 7: and that adults are free to go off and not
- 32:35Speaker 7: contact people they know for days, if not weeks at
- 32:39Speaker 7: a time.
- 32:41Speaker 1: But there were ominous signs from the beginning.
- 32:43Speaker 7: Her friends alerted us that she was not picking up
- 32:47Speaker 7: her phone, she was not answering text messages or messages
- 32:52Speaker 7: on Facebook or social media, and that's when we became
- 32:55Speaker 7: very worried. This is a person with hundreds and hundreds
- 32:59Speaker 7: of content in social media and very active, very social person.
- 33:04Speaker 7: Very unusual behavior for Kara to not contact anyone for
- 33:09Speaker 7: even one day, let alone many days.
- 33:15Speaker 1: The silence was deafening.
- 33:16Speaker 7: The last conversation I had with her, I remember trying
- 33:21Speaker 7: to encourage her, if not beg her to come back
- 33:24Speaker 7: to us. I just remember wanting so badly to get
- 33:27Speaker 7: her back, but knowing that she was nineteen and wanted
- 33:31Speaker 7: to strike out on her own, and she didn't want
- 33:34Speaker 7: to be under her parents' thumb anymore. It had to
- 33:38Speaker 7: be her decision.
- 33:40Speaker 1: The family flew to Colorado Springs to search for her.
- 33:43Speaker 1: In Kara's bedroom, the Nichols say there were clues something
- 33:46Speaker 1: was terribly wrong. Her professional makeup case was still there,
- 33:50Speaker 1: nearly three hundred dollars and her laptop. The Nichols believed
- 33:54Speaker 1: Kara was in grave danger. They pressed the local cops.
- 33:57Speaker 7: They began to suspect that something bad had happened.
- 34:02Speaker 1: Time was of the essence fresh clues could go stale.
- 34:06Speaker 1: Al Paso County Sheriff Terry mccketta appealed to the public
- 34:10Speaker 1: for help.
- 34:11Speaker 8: We all know somebody out there knows something they always do,
- 34:17Speaker 8: and all we're asking is to tell us where we
- 34:21Speaker 8: can find her, or to contact us with what happened.
- 34:26Speaker 1: Cops were on the case, or so it appeared, but
- 34:28Speaker 1: Carra's family says that could not have been further from
- 34:31Speaker 1: the truth. The lead investigator, this man, Deputy Cliff Porter,
- 34:36Speaker 1: admits in this audio tape, while being questioned by his
- 34:38Speaker 1: superiors that he had barely lifted a finger to find Kara.
- 34:42Speaker 22: I said, you know, maybe somebody would finally just say, look,
- 34:45Speaker 22: this is a cold case.
- 34:46Speaker 1: This girl's probably dead.
- 34:47Speaker 14: We're going to work the leads, but we're going to
- 34:49Speaker 14: shell this thing and we won't overreact. Every time mister
- 34:52Speaker 14: Nichols comes.
- 34:53Speaker 1: In the Nichols were outraged.
- 34:57Speaker 7: That was very angry.
- 34:58Speaker 22: It made me feel that they did not think my
- 35:02Speaker 22: daughter was worth searching for, that she was.
- 35:07Speaker 4: Beneath their efforts.
- 35:10Speaker 1: And what is just as disturbing. In that same audio recording,
- 35:13Speaker 1: Deputy Porter admits he dropped the ball, ignoring clues that
- 35:17Speaker 1: could have been vital in the early stages of the investigation.
- 35:20Speaker 14: I apologize, it's not going to be as good as
- 35:23Speaker 14: if I had done it.
- 35:25Speaker 3: When when all that stuff happened.
- 35:29Speaker 1: Well, all that was going on. Tips were pouring into
- 35:31Speaker 1: the Nichols Facebook page, and one made family members tremble
- 35:35Speaker 1: in horror.
- 35:36Speaker 7: A person who claimed to have seen Kara and claimed
- 35:40Speaker 7: to have known that Kara was being trafficked two men.
- 35:44Speaker 7: This person urged us to drop everything immediately and go
- 35:48Speaker 7: to Long Island and find our daughter and rescue her.
- 35:55Speaker 1: The Nichols now feared their daughter was being held prisoner
- 35:58Speaker 1: in a sex trafficking ring, but the police did not
- 36:01Speaker 1: find her at the location.
- 36:02Speaker 7: Nothing came of it. We don't know if it was
- 36:04Speaker 7: a prank. We don't know if it was a scam.
- 36:07Speaker 7: We just don't know.
- 36:09Speaker 1: Detective Jeff Nuir took over the case from Detective Sergeant
- 36:12Speaker 1: Tammy Gugliata Nor doesn't believe Kara was going to a
- 36:16Speaker 1: modeling shoot, but he's keeping a tight lid on their
- 36:18Speaker 1: investigation until they're sure what happened to the platinum blonde.
- 36:22Speaker 19: I really don't know that she's a victim. She's a
- 36:24Speaker 19: missing person, whether she left on her own free will
- 36:27Speaker 19: or if she was taken against her will. When you
- 36:29Speaker 19: look at it is the possibility that there's foul play there.
- 36:33Speaker 1: As the layers of their precious daughter's life slowly peeled away,
- 36:37Speaker 1: the Nichols found out that some of Kara's other modeling
- 36:40Speaker 1: gigs were sometimes a cover for an escort service, even
- 36:43Speaker 1: though model Mayhem is a legitimate site for models.
- 36:47Speaker 9: The police do everything that they can, but it's skedding
- 36:51Speaker 9: to be very, very difficult with sites that we see
- 36:54Speaker 9: on the Internet, whether it's a modeling site, Craigslist, all
- 36:58Speaker 9: of them, and they behind the law, and so do
- 37:02Speaker 9: the perpetrators, as we've seen in our case of car Nichols.
- 37:08Speaker 1: The Nichols have sought outside help from the Women's Coalition
- 37:11Speaker 1: Against Violence and Exploitation, a group that gets the word
- 37:15Speaker 1: out and tracks social media on hundreds of missing person cases.
- 37:19Speaker 7: Under no circumstances.
- 37:21Speaker 9: Does this family believe the things that the police have
- 37:25Speaker 9: always tried to have This family believe that car killed herself,
