- 0:03really fascinating conversation Joe Rogan had with Doctor Andrew
- 0:06Huberman. He's a neuroscientist at
- 0:08Stanford School of Medicine, and the talk was on the powerful JRE
- 0:12YouTube channel. Our mission here is to unpack
- 0:15the key insights, especially around how our brains and bodies

- 0:23Yeah. And what's so compelling about
- 0:25Doctor Huberman's work and what they got into is this core idea
- 0:28that our nervous system, basically the brain, spinal
- 0:32cord, all the nerves, it's the foundation for how we
- 0:34experience, well, everything. His lab studies how the system
- 0:37can regenerate, like restoring vision, which is amazing, but
- 0:40also how it controls our states of mind, things like stress,
- 0:43focus, creativity. So it's not just about external
- 0:46events, but how internal state driven by the system actually
- 0:49colors our whole reality. Exactly.
- 0:51That's what the conversation really highlights.
- 0:52The brain and body. They're not separate things.
- 0:55They're constantly talking to each other.
- 0:57And when you feel like you can't control your mental state, when
- 0:59that connection feels off, that can cause real suffering.
- 1:04That feeling of being stuck inside your own head, right?
- 1:06I think he used an analogy, something about the brain's
- 1:09unique role. He did, yeah.
- 1:12He compared losing a limb to brain damage.
- 1:14And it really hits home how central the brain is.
- 1:17Losing a limb is obviously huge, life changing, but damage to the
- 1:20brain that can change who you are, your memories, personality,
- 1:25everything. OK, so if we boil it down,
- 1:27what's the brains main job in this whole internal external
- 1:31world? Dance.
- 1:32Think of it as a master integrator.
- 1:34It's prime directive really is to take all the sensations from
- 1:38the body, merge them with your thoughts, your experiences, and
- 1:41then use all that to help you react appropriately, adapt,
- 1:44survive. OK, let's dig into these states
- 1:46of mind. It sounds like it's more than
- 1:48just being in a good mood or a bad mood.
- 1:50Oh, absolutely. A state of mind is this dynamic
- 1:52thing. It's the interplay between
- 1:54what's happening out there and, crucially, how your brain is
- 1:57filtering and interpreting it. All.
- 1:59Your internal state is the lens, basically.
- 2:02And Humor Lab focuses on 2 specific states as being really
- 2:06vital for health and performance, sleep and focus.
- 2:09That's right, sleep and clear, calm focus.
- 2:13Think about it. Sleep is like the ultimate
- 2:15reset. It's when your brain and body
- 2:16repair, consolidate learning. And that clear, calm focus,
- 2:21that's your ability to direct your attention, learn
- 2:24effectively, solve problems. If those two aren't working
- 2:26well, well, everything else kind of struggles.
- 2:28Makes total sense. We've all felt that brain fog
- 2:32from beds, sleep, or just being scattered.
- 2:34How do they actually study these states in the lab?
- 2:37How do you measure calm focus? It's pretty cool, actually.
- 2:40They use a few different approaches in the human lab.
- 2:42They often use virtual reality. They can put people in, say,
- 2:46stressful VR scenarios. And while they're in there,
- 2:48they're measuring physiological stuff, heart rate, breathing
- 2:50rate, pupil size, even tracking where their eyes are looking.
- 2:54So you get this real time window into their nervous system
- 2:56reacting. Exactly, and sometimes in very
- 3:00specific situations. They work with neurosurgery
- 3:02patients. These patients might have
- 3:04electrodes temporarily placed in their brain for medical reasons.
- 3:08And that gives this incredibly rare chance to record directly
- 3:11from areas like the amygdala, the brain's, you know, emotion
- 3:14hub, especially for fear and stress.
- 3:16Wow, that must be incredibly detailed data.
- 3:19He also mentioned something funny about neurosurgeons in the
- 3:21skull. Yeah, he shared this anecdote.
- 3:23Apparently some neurosurgeons kind of joke that the skull is a
- 3:26poorly evolved device. Their point is, if you really
- 3:29want to protect the brain, a well made titanium plate is
- 3:32actually much stronger, so there may be less hesitant about
- 3:37making small openings for research if a patient is already
- 3:39having surgery. That's a surprising perspective.
- 3:42Did that lead into talking about things like Neuralink brain
- 3:46interfaces? It did, yeah.
- 3:48It was a natural jump from thinking about accessing the
- 3:50brain to talking about neurotechnology like Neuralink.
- 3:54Joe mentioned feeling a bit uneasy about Elon Musk's idea
- 3:57that we might eventually communicate.
- 3:59Just mind to mind, you know, skip language altogether.
- 4:01Now that connected to another researcher Huberman brought up
- 4:04Doctor Eddie Chang at UCSF. What's his work about?
- 4:08Right, Doctor Chang. He's a top neurosurgeon who
- 4:11studies speech. He's doing amazing work decoding
- 4:14the exact brain signals that control our mouth, our throat,
- 4:17everything we used to talk. So the sci-fi idea Huberman
- 4:20floated was, if you decode the signals for English, could a
- 4:24device maybe manipulate your vocal cords to speak, say,
- 4:28French directly from your thoughts?
- 4:30Sounds like something from Star Trek, right?
- 4:32But it's based on Chang's findings.
- 4:34He found this consistent map of inflection in the brain.
- 4:37It seems to be the same across languages.
- 4:39It suggests how we encode intonation.
- 4:41The rise and fall of our voice for emotion and emphasis is
- 4:44neurologically fundamental. That's wild.
- 4:47And he mentioned Upspeak that way people end sentences like
- 4:50questions. And Chang is worried about it.
- 4:52Yeah, apparently Chang sees it it as possibly a distortion of
- 4:56the map. Like maybe it's not just a
- 4:58speech habit, but reflects some change in how the brain is
- 5:01representing meaning through intonation.
- 5:03Wow. It's fascinating how social
- 5:06stuff in speech might actually link to brain changes.
- 5:10Huberman compared it to accents. Social pressure, but distortion?
- 5:14That sounds more serious. Did this lead to
- 5:16neuroplasticity? The brain changing.
- 5:19Exactly. It flowed right into talking
- 5:21about Doctor Mike Mertznick's work.
- 5:22He was actually Chang's mentor. Mertznick is famous for
- 5:25discovering adult neuroplasticity.
- 5:28You know, the idea that our brains aren't fixed after
- 5:30childhood. They can keep changing, rewiring
- 5:32throughout our lives. Which was a huge shift in
- 5:34thinking. So what's the magic ingredient
- 5:36for making the adult brain change?
- 5:38Focus, Intense focus. When you really concentrate,
- 5:42narrow your attention. Huberman called it a soda straw
- 5:45view of the world. That's the signal.
- 5:46It tells your brain. Pay attention.
- 5:48This is important. Rewire for this.
- 5:50He brought that back to a really relatable feeling, being so
- 5:52tired you can't remember something simple like a Muy Thai
- 5:55combo you know perfectly well. Yeah, it's a perfect example.
- 5:58Your physical state, your mental state, exhaustion, stress,
- 6:01anxiety. They massively impact your
- 6:04ability to access what you already know, let alone learn
- 6:07something new. Even if you physically can do
- 6:09it, if your head's not right, performance suffers.
- 6:11Which loops back perfectly to why his lab studies clear, calm,
- 6:15focus and sleep. They're fundamental.
- 6:17They really are. They're the foundation for the
- 6:19brain to work optimally, for learning, for performing well in
- 6:22anything. He then laid out this brain
- 6:24framework, duration, path, outcome.
- 6:28Can you break that down? What's the brain doing there?
- 6:31It's basically how our brain seems to structure, experience
- 6:33and plan actions for almost anything you do.
- 6:36Consciously learning guitar, planning a project?
- 6:39Your brain estimates how long will this take?
- 6:41Duration. What are the steps, Path.
- 6:43What do I expect to happen? Outcome.
- 6:45OK. And how do sleep and stress mess
- 6:48with that DPO framework? Well, in deep sleep, the parts
- 6:51of the brain doing that linear step by step planning, they
- 6:54quiet right down. Time gets fuzzy, paths dissolve.
- 6:57That's why dreams are weird. Under stress, though, your
- 7:00perception of time can and warp. Things might feel super slow or
- 7:04way too fast. That DPO calculation gets skewed
- 7:07by the body's alarm signals. He also mentioned studying deep
- 7:10relaxation through medical hypnosis, but made a point it's
- 7:13not stage hypnosis. What's the key difference there?
- 7:16Right. Medical hypnosis, like the work
- 7:18Doctor David Spiegel does at Stanford, is a real clinical
- 7:21tool. It induces deep relaxation but
- 7:23also highly focused attention. They use it for things like pain
- 7:26management, trauma. It's controlled therapeutic
- 7:29stage. Hypnosis is well, it's
- 7:31entertainment, relies on suggestion for laughs.
- 7:34Total different ball game. And then they talked about David
- 7:36Goggins. He's like the ultimate outlier
- 7:38in mental toughness. How does he fit into this
- 7:40duration path outcome? Idea Huberman suggested Goggins
- 7:45might have this incredible, maybe unconscious ability to
- 7:49force himself into that DPO mode even under insane duress.
- 7:54Whether it's sheer willpower or some intense focus state, he
- 7:58somehow keeps sequencing actions towards an outcome when most
- 8:02people's systems would just shut down.
- 8:03Which brought up the difference between kid brains and adult
- 8:05brains regarding plasticity. What's the main take away?
- 8:09The big difference is when you're young, plasticity is more
- 8:11passive. Your brain just soaks up
- 8:13experiences and wires itself accordingly.
- 8:16As an adult, you have to be much more intentional.
- 8:18You need that focused effort to trigger the change.
- 8:21It doesn't just happen passively anymore.
- 8:23And what chemicals are driving, having this adult plasticity?
- 8:26What's happening in the? Brain 2 main players Nora
- 8:28Pinefrin That's basically adrenaline gets released when
- 8:31there's urgency, alertness gets you ready for action and a
- 8:34subtle choline that comes from a specific spot deep in the brain
- 8:37and it sharpens focus, locks and attention.
- 8:39You need both working together. Urgency plus focus equals
- 8:42plasticity trigger. Joe asked about things like
- 8:45supplements, acetylcholine and alpha brain, or even cryo
- 8:48chambers. Could those speed things up?
- 8:50Huberman basically confirmed the core mechanism.
- 8:53Urgency and focus are the triggers.
- 8:56Supplements might provide building blocks, maybe, but they
- 8:59don't create the state itself. He made a cool point that in
- 9:02kids acetylcholine is kind of released like rain everywhere,
- 9:07making learning easier. In adults, it's more like a
- 9:09targeted spotlight. You have to aim it.
- 9:11So the adult brain is more selective about rewiring itself.
- 9:16Why would that be, evolutionarily?
- 9:17It makes sense, right? Once you've learned the basics
- 9:19for survival reproduction, it's more efficient to keep those
- 9:22circuits stable. Making big changes as an adult
- 9:25takes more energy, more resources.
- 9:26So the brain demands a strong signal, real focus, real
- 9:30urgency, before it commits to rewiring.
- 9:32But the focus learning part isn't the whole story for
- 9:34Plasticity, is it? There's a second step.
- 9:37Absolutely critical second step, deep sleep and rest after the
- 9:41focus learning. That's when the real
- 9:43consolidation happens. The connections between neuron
- 9:46synapses actually strengthen or weaken during rest.
- 9:50Research shows physical brain structures change after
- 9:52learning, especially during deep slow wave sleep.
- 9:56So the formula is intense focus, bit of urgency followed by
- 10:00proper deep rest. That's the recipe.
- 10:03And stress. Stress messes up both parts.
- 10:06It kills focus during learning, and it disrupts the restorative
- 10:09sleep needed afterwards. You see elite performers, they
- 10:12get this instinctively. They topple between intense
- 10:15effort and deep recovery. Goggins armoring your mind idea
- 10:18sounds like getting mental reps in building those pathways even
- 10:21without the physical act. That's a great way to put it.
- 10:23Mental rehearsal visualization. It strengthens the neural
- 10:26circuits involved. Then they switched to dopamine.
- 10:28We usually think of it as pleasure, but what's its role in
- 10:31learning and pushing limits? Dopamine is definitely linked to
- 10:34reward, but it's broader. It's released when we feel like
- 10:38we're on the right path, making progress towards a goal.
- 10:41That dopamine hit reinforces the behavior.
- 10:43It says, yes, keep doing this. It's motivation fuel.
- 10:46And why do we hit that wall, that feeling of I have to quit
- 10:51during hard effort, even if maybe we could physically do
- 10:53more? Fascinating mechanism there.
- 10:56It involves norepinephreen again and these brain cells called
- 10:59glial cells. As effort goes up,
- 11:01norepinephreen rises. If it hits a certain threshold,
- 11:05glial cells basically tell the brain, OK, shut down voluntary
- 11:08effort, that's the quitting signal.
- 11:10But dopamine, Dopamine can push that threshold higher.
- 11:12It gives you more gas in the tank to override that signal.
- 11:16So what kind of things trigger that helpful dopamine release?
- 11:20Things that help us push through.
- 11:21Lots of things actually. Teamwork, feeling connected to
- 11:24others, humor, playfulness, having a really strong sense of
- 11:27purpose, all these can boost dopamine and help you keep
- 11:30going. It's good to know we can learn
- 11:31and focus at any age, but it sounds like these gates on
- 11:34plasticity need the right chemical keys.
- 11:37Precisely. The potential is always there,
- 11:40but you have to actively create the right internal state, the
- 11:43urgency, focus, and then the rest.
- 11:46Quick clarification or adrenaline and norepinephrine,
- 11:48same thing. Exactly the same chemical, just
- 11:50different names came up from different labs discovering it
- 11:53around the same time. Bit of a historical quirk you'll
- 11:55hear both used. Got it.
- 11:57OK then the talk move to comparing real world stress with
- 12:00VR Lab stress pros and cons. Well, real world stress is real,
- 12:05nothing matches its complexity. But VR is advantage is control.
- 12:09You can create a strong sense of presence in VR, make people feel
- 12:13like they're really there, and that triggers real physiological
- 12:16responses, people's dilating time perception changing.
- 12:19Much better than just showing stressful pictures, which was an
- 12:22older method. But they also track people in
- 12:24the real world using wearables. Woop bands.
- 12:27Yeah, that gives them data outside the lab.
- 12:28They track sleep, heart rate variability, activity and
- 12:32people, log stress levels, major events.
- 12:34So you see how Physiology responds to the messiness of
- 12:36actual daily life. And a lot of interventions they
- 12:39study involve breathing. Why is breath such a powerful
- 12:43lever on our state? It's incredibly direct.
- 12:46As James Nestor's book Breath detailed, how we breathe changes
- 12:50the oxygen CO2 balance in our blood that directly signals the
- 12:55autonomic nervous system, the system controlling fight or
- 12:57flight versus rest and digest. Specific breathing patterns
- 13:01activate neurons right in the brain stem that control these
- 13:04states. You mentioned physiological size
- 13:07as a super quick stress reducer. What is that again?
- 13:10It's a double inhale through the nose, followed by a long slow
- 13:14exhale through the mouth. It's like an instinct.
- 13:16It helps pop open the little air sacs in your lungs, dump CO2
- 13:19quickly, and signals the nervous system to calm down.
- 13:22Very effective, very fast. What about other breath work?
- 13:25Some actually increase norpime brain.
- 13:27Right. Certain techniques like rapid
- 13:30intense breathing can ramp up norepinfrin, which isn't always
- 13:33bad. Norepinfrin also helps mobilize
- 13:35the immune system short term. They touched on adrenal burnout.
- 13:38Doctor Huberman sounded pretty skeptical.
- 13:40His take is that burnout is probably the wrong way to think
- 13:43about it. The adrenals are built for
- 13:45stress. The issue is more likely our
- 13:47regulation of the stress response, getting stuck in on
- 13:51mode, not being able to return to baseline easily.
- 13:54It's less about the hardware failing, more about the system
- 13:57control. Like the software getting stuck,
- 13:59He also said stress can be contagious.
- 14:01Yeah, there's research, including from his lab, showing
- 14:05emotional states, especially a high arousal ones like stress
- 14:07can spread between people. Emotional contagion We pick up
- 14:11on each other's states. That led to a really interesting
- 14:13bit on comedy, Dopamine and reward prediction error.
- 14:18What's that connection? The idea is humor often works by
- 14:21violating expectations. If a joke is funnier than you
- 14:24predicted, you get a bigger dopamine hit.
- 14:26That surprise, the prediction error, is rewarding.
- 14:29He even floated the idea of stand up as a kind of mass
- 14:31hypnosis because the audience shares that collective emotional
- 14:35journey. And the structure of jokes often
- 14:37breaks space-time rules. Subverting our expectations
- 14:41triggers the dopamine. Exactly that twist, that break
- 14:45from the expected pattern, seems key to the dopamine release.
- 14:49He briefly mentioned how substances like MDMA, which
- 14:52boosts dopamine, might allow different kinds of information
- 14:55processing, potentially therapeutically.
- 14:57But warned about artificial highs from drugs like cocaine or
- 15:01meth. Definitely those cause huge
- 15:04unnatural dopamine spikes leading to that narrow focus the
- 15:07dopamine pursuit system where getting more of the drug becomes
- 15:10the only goal. He also dismissed dopamine
- 15:13fasting as not really based on Physiology.
- 15:16The conversation took a serious turn then, discussing societal
- 15:20issues like homelessness in California.
- 15:23He sounded pretty frustrated. Yeah, he expressed real concern
- 15:26about the scale of the problem and the apparent lack of
- 15:28effective solutions, a kind of disconnect between intentions
- 15:31and results. And that frustration seemed to
- 15:34carry over to how science was communicated during the
- 15:36pandemic. He felt the communication wasn't
- 15:38always clear or consistent, which in his view might have
- 15:41eroded public trust. He suggested a panel of diverse
- 15:44experts, like they use for disaster inquiries might have
- 15:47been better. He linked that stressful period
- 15:49in communication issues to people becoming more susceptible
- 15:53to delusional thinking. His point was that high stress
- 15:56can make people crave certainty, even if it means latching on to
- 16:00less evidence based ideas or conspiracy theories.
- 16:03And he noted a general decline in trust and traditional experts
- 16:06alongside the rise of individual online influencers.
- 16:09And he stressed that alongside public health measures, we
- 16:12needed to focus on basic well-being, stress management,
- 16:16immune support. Absolutely.
- 16:17He emphasized those fundamentals.
- 16:19Hydration, sleep, gratitude, social connection, nutrition,
- 16:23exercise. Called them the tide needed to
- 16:25lift the boat of well-being. He worried that the poor
- 16:28baseline health in the US population made dealing with the
- 16:31crisis even harder. He also worried about our phones
- 16:34creating a neuroplasticity of learning to be defocused and
- 16:37social media being a dopamine gobbler.
- 16:40Yeah, the concern is that the constant pings, the fragmented
- 16:43info are actually training our brains for distraction,
- 16:46shortening attention spans. He called social media mental
- 16:49chewing gum. Gives little hits of dopamine
- 16:51but wastes cognitive energy, depletes dopamine on trivial
- 16:54stuff. He used an analogy from Alan
- 16:57Levinovitz's book Natural, comparing processed online info
- 17:01to processed food. Right.
- 17:03Just like bad food harms physical health, maybe this
- 17:07constant stream of fragmented, often inflammatory online
- 17:10content is bad for our mental health, he suggested.
- 17:13We're in an adolescent stage with tech blurring boundaries
- 17:17with info while becoming more physically isolated.
- 17:20But he held out some hope for tech improving communication.
- 17:23Maybe Elon Musk's idea of thought communication.
- 17:27Yeah, a bit of optimism there. Maybe future tech could allow
- 17:30for clearer, more direct sharing of intentions, cutting through
- 17:34some of the online toxicity. And ultimately, he came back to
- 17:36neuroplasticity as the way out, especially for kids.
- 17:40Yes, understanding plasticity is key.
- 17:42He made a really important point.
- 17:43Agitation, focused urgency, maybe even struggle is often
- 17:46needed for plasticity. It's not just about relaxed flow
- 17:49states. It's that toggle again, high
- 17:51attention, high urgency, then deep rest.
- 17:54That's how the brain changes significantly.
- 17:56He even pushed back against wanting constant relaxation,
- 17:59suggesting that's not how humans thrive.
- 18:01Exactly. He mentioned a mouse experiment,
- 18:03the tube test, where competition moving forward was linked to
- 18:07dopamine and survival. Struggle balanced with rest
- 18:11drives growth and meaning. And the scientific thinking
- 18:14process itself, valuing nuance patterns, is useful beyond just
- 18:18science. He contrasted that with social
- 18:21media's tendency to lump things together, encourage high
- 18:24emotion, which kills nuance. He also talked about how we get
- 18:27attached to our beliefs, our ego defends them and dopamine
- 18:30reinforces beliefs just by thinking them repeatedly.
- 18:34So changing minds isn't just about facts, it's about shifting
- 18:36someone's mental state, he mentioned.
- 18:38Group cohesion. Shared purpose, Activating these
- 18:41systems powerfully. Right like the positive
- 18:44neurochemistry of protest for a shared cause, contrasting it
- 18:47with societal division he expressed hope for the future
- 18:50but also concerned about rational people leaving areas
- 18:52with big problems he. Described a VR experience
- 18:55simulating different racial perspectives to build empathy.
- 18:58The Walk of 1000 cuts idea using VR to simulate microaggressions,
- 19:02trying to engage neurochemistry to shift perspective.
- 19:05Also touched on dehumanization in big cities.
- 19:08Then he got into his own labs. Work on restoring vision, CNTF
- 19:13injections, VR stimulation. Yeah, a clinical trial using
- 19:16CNTFA growth factor plus specific VR visual tasks to
- 19:20hopefully help retinal ganglion cells survive and function
- 19:24better. He invited eligible listeners to
- 19:27look into it. And red light therapy
- 19:29potentially helping photoreceptors.
- 19:31Emerging research. Yeah, specific wavelengths of
- 19:33red light might boost mitochondrial function in those
- 19:35cells. He also stressed morning bright
- 19:38light for circadian rhythm and avoiding bright light at night.
- 19:41He called the eyes 2 pieces of the brain right out there,
- 19:45mentioned David Sinclair's work on reversing aging in optic
- 19:48nerve cells in mice, too. Comparing different approaches
- 19:50CNTF gene therapy like Sinclair's using Yamanaka
- 19:54factors all relying on that core principle.
- 19:57Neurons that fire together wire together.
- 19:59And finally, he plugged his Instagram for more neuroscience
- 20:02info and study recruitment. Right at Hubermanlab, good
- 20:04resource. He definitely left the door open
- 20:06for more conversations too. Wow, that really was a deep dive
- 20:09pulling apart that conversation with Doctor Andrew Huberman on
- 20:12JRE. So much there.

- 20:41both tech and just basic biology like breathing sleep to manage
- 20:46our States and hopefully improve things, it really makes you
- 20:48think about how much control we could have.
