Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: We have had some pretty concerning claims being made about
- 0:03Speaker 1: some of the behavior being experienced at the Howard Springs facility,
- 0:07Speaker 1: the one which is indeed housing flood evacuees. Now, we
- 0:10Speaker 1: had some calls and messages yesterday that people were catching
- 0:13Speaker 1: buses to Palmeston and other locations, drinking alcohol, damaging the
- 0:17Speaker 1: facility then and even becoming violent with others. Now joining
- 0:21Speaker 1: me on the line to talk more about the concerns
- 0:24Speaker 1: is Jared Maylee, the deputy opposition leader. Good morning to you, Jared,
- 0:29Speaker 1: Good morning, Kay, Good mornings Now, Jared, what exactly is
- 0:33Speaker 1: happening at the Howard Springs facility?
- 0:35Speaker 2: Well, Katie, from my understanding, seems to be complete chaos
- 0:38Speaker 2: out there at Howard Springs. There seems to be no
- 0:41Speaker 2: measures at all in relation to pre calling alcohol, and
- 0:44Speaker 2: I'm hearing that people are going out getting intoxicated, coming
- 0:47Speaker 2: back even worse, bringing alcohol back in the facility and
- 0:51Speaker 2: drinking there and then causing assaults and domestic violence. I'm
- 0:55Speaker 2: hearing it's not that bad that the police have had
- 0:57Speaker 2: to put a domestic violent safehouse out there. The property damage,
- 1:03Speaker 2: salts and all sorts of things are going on there.
- 1:05Speaker 2: I think it's time that the labor government come up
- 1:08Speaker 2: and be open and transparent and tell people what is
- 1:10Speaker 2: actually happening out there, because it seems to be complete
- 1:12Speaker 2: Chale Jared, how do you know?
- 1:14Speaker 1: How do you know that these things are actually happening?
- 1:17Speaker 2: Well, just go on to a small place to Katie
- 1:19Speaker 2: and I speak to people who are friends who work there.
- 1:22Speaker 2: People I just hear stories, and it's really time for
- 1:25Speaker 2: the government to open up and tell people what's going on,
- 1:28Speaker 2: because you know, this is people's lives. There's assaults, there's
- 1:32Speaker 2: domestic violence. Is all because it seems that the territory
- 1:35Speaker 2: families have failed to manage the alcohol or putty steps
- 1:38Speaker 2: in place to manage alcohol into the facility. We know
- 1:41Speaker 2: this is a government facility. It's been mi understanding, has
- 1:44Speaker 2: been extremely damaged to a point where some parts that
- 1:47Speaker 2: have got to be condemned. And it's just because there's
- 1:50Speaker 2: no real control over the alcohol and the Labor government
- 1:53Speaker 2: has failed to put any measures, and just that they've
- 1:54Speaker 2: done an our of screens.
- 1:56Speaker 1: So you're saying that there's some elements. You're saying that
- 1:59Speaker 1: there's some occasion or some part out at that Howard
- 2:02Speaker 1: Springs facility that now is off limits due to extensive damage.
- 2:08Speaker 2: Or they need to repair it because there's been damaged
- 2:11Speaker 2: that badly. And as well as that, there's that I
- 2:13Speaker 2: understand there's a place which is now a safe powerful
- 2:15Speaker 2: domestic violence because of domestic violence. It is so bad
- 2:18Speaker 2: there because of the alcohol coming on to the facility
- 2:21Speaker 2: and people turning up there intoxicated.
- 2:23Speaker 1: And so have you had that confirmed at this point
- 2:26Speaker 1: in time in terms of whether there is a DEVO
- 2:29Speaker 1: safe house there or exactly what the go is.
- 2:33Speaker 2: Well, the Labor government's seems have cleaned up, and I
- 2:35Speaker 2: will be certainly asking some questions next week in Parliament,
- 2:38Speaker 2: but this is an opportunity now for the Labor government
- 2:40Speaker 2: to come out and confirm it or tell us what's happening,
- 2:43Speaker 2: because the Labor governments say that they're open and transparent
- 2:46Speaker 2: and this is a classic example or whether they're not,
- 2:48Speaker 2: and if they are, they's time to come out and
- 2:50Speaker 2: tell territory what's going on and what's the cost to
- 2:53Speaker 2: the damage, what's going on, what are the plans, what
- 2:55Speaker 2: alcohol measures have they got in place? It just seems
- 2:58Speaker 2: to be complete chaos, Jared, I have we've.
- 3:00Speaker 1: Got a statement which has been sent to us by Territory, Families,
- 3:04Speaker 1: housing and communities. Now, they say the staff at the
- 3:08Speaker 1: Center for National Resilience remain focused on providing support and
- 3:12Speaker 1: assistance to the more than six hundred of vacuees and
- 3:15Speaker 1: ensuring their safety and well being. They continue by saying
- 3:18Speaker 1: police have an on site presence at the Center for
- 3:21Speaker 1: National Resilience and through engagement with vic Daily Regional Council,
- 3:25Speaker 1: a night patrol model's been established within the Center for
- 3:28Speaker 1: National Resilience through the support of patrollers who've been evacuated
- 3:32Speaker 1: to the facility, and that this night patrol service is
- 3:35Speaker 1: providing valuable support and engagement with evacuees at the center,
- 3:40Speaker 1: and that they say our priority remains the safety and
- 3:44Speaker 1: comfort of those affected by flooding. What do you make
- 3:48Speaker 1: of that.
- 3:49Speaker 2: Well, it's just I think I haven't seen it though.
- 3:51Speaker 2: There's just concerned there must be trouble there because if
- 3:54Speaker 2: the police have got a facility there and there on site,
- 3:56Speaker 2: that obviously reduces the police out in the public and
- 3:59Speaker 2: in the Darwin and Parmesan and that they're doing nice troll.
- 4:02Speaker 2: That just confirmed there must be problems because there wasn't
- 4:04Speaker 2: a problem, they wouldn't be having that and the peace
- 4:06Speaker 2: wouldn't be required to have an on site presence. So
- 4:08Speaker 2: it just really confirms that there is seems to be
- 4:11Speaker 2: complete chaos. And we see what happened in our the
- 4:13Speaker 2: Springs when chances of who's got his way there was Mayhem,
- 4:16Speaker 2: and it seems to happen that just history is repeating
- 4:18Speaker 2: itself again and it's Mayhem and Howard Springs. So n't
- 4:22Speaker 2: have failed to control.
- 4:23Speaker 1: What do you think needs to happen here?
- 4:25Speaker 2: We ultimately the need a government facility is meant to
- 4:28Speaker 2: be a dry facility, and these the first step would
- 4:31Speaker 2: be to make sure there's no alcohol coming on to
- 4:33Speaker 2: the premises to stop that family and domestic violence as
- 4:36Speaker 2: occurring it. I'm also hearing there's been multiple presentations at
- 4:39Speaker 2: the hospital from people from that facility, So it just
- 4:44Speaker 2: seems to be complete chaos and it's all alcohol related
- 4:46Speaker 2: for what I'm.
- 4:47Speaker 1: Hearing, Jared, are you experiencing out in the rural area?
- 4:50Speaker 1: Has there been sort of I know that we're reporting
- 4:53Speaker 1: this morning talking about anti social behavior around the city
- 4:56Speaker 1: and certainly had some messages come through that there's been
- 4:59Speaker 1: anti social behavior as well out in the Palmerston area.
- 5:02Speaker 1: It is on the back of the discussion that Brent
- 5:05Speaker 1: Potter and Mark Monahan, the member for Fatty Bay and
- 5:08Speaker 1: also for Fong Limb, reportedly attended the latest council meeting
- 5:12Speaker 1: and question counsel as to why they're not enforcing laws
- 5:14Speaker 1: and finding people that are sleeping rough in some of
- 5:17Speaker 1: those locations. Are you seeing any kind of issues out
- 5:21Speaker 1: in the rural area with this type of rough.
- 5:23Speaker 2: Sleeping Well really yes, especially around the old Bunning site
- 5:28Speaker 2: there and through Walliger Holtz Road, there's people sleeping along there.
- 5:33Speaker 2: I write my pushflake up and down that cycle track
- 5:35Speaker 2: and I see people sit in the mornings there sleeping,
- 5:38Speaker 2: and I see evidence of rubbish and broken spirit bottles
- 5:43Speaker 2: and alcohol right.
- 5:44Speaker 1: Through that area.
- 5:45Speaker 2: So it is certainly a concern right across the down
- 5:48Speaker 2: and you know for the government to go and try
- 5:50Speaker 2: and blame the council, well, the labor government, they're the government,
- 5:53Speaker 2: they've got control, they've got the leavers. It's really the
- 5:55Speaker 2: buck stops with them.
- 5:57Speaker 1: Well, Jereed Mayley, the Deputy Opposition lad, we are going
- 5:59Speaker 1: to have to leave it there. Look, we have got
- 6:02Speaker 1: a couple of people who've been in contact saying does
- 6:04Speaker 1: Jared had any evidence to support the claims that that
- 6:08Speaker 1: the facility out there is being damaged.
- 6:12Speaker 2: Well, look, I haven't got any evidence because I haven't
- 6:14Speaker 2: been on the facility. But this is an opportunity now
- 6:17Speaker 2: for the government to come out and be open and
- 6:19Speaker 2: transparent and say there has or hasn't been. But I'm
- 6:22Speaker 2: certainly asking the questions that this needs to be alluded
- 6:24Speaker 2: into and the government need to come clean to territories
- 6:27Speaker 2: because ultimately it's going to be tax PAS money that's
- 6:29Speaker 2: got to siss a bill because the Labor government have
- 6:31Speaker 2: failed to manage that facility in relation to alcohol consumption
- 6:35Speaker 2: on a government property. It's just embarrassing for the labor government.
- 6:38Speaker 1: Jared Mailey always appreciate your time. Thanks very much for
- 6:41Speaker 1: having a chat with us this morning.
- 6:43Speaker 2: Thank you, thank you.
