- 0:52Speaker 2: don't sound like Dave Allen because I'm not Dave Allen.
- 0:55Speaker 2: And as you know, he's been on vacation for the
- 0:58Speaker 2: last couple of days. Let's hope he's not up listening.
- 1:01Speaker 2: But we're going to carry on without him and have
- 1:05Speaker 2: a really good show. We have got some good people on.
- 1:07Speaker 2: You know, it's Wednesday morning. That means Millie Snyder is
- 1:10Speaker 2: on to talk about the Mediterranean lifestyle. We'll get to
- 1:14Speaker 2: that in a moment. We're also going to talk some
- 1:18Speaker 2: more about the Appalachian Outlaw Trail, but I'm going to
- 1:21Speaker 2: pull when the gentleman Barbie come along. I'm going to
- 1:24Speaker 2: talk about also what some opportunities might be beyond the recreation,
- 1:30Speaker 2: the fund the enjoyment. If anybody's an entrepreneur out there,
- 1:34Speaker 2: we'll tell you what we're looking for and what we
- 1:36Speaker 2: need to help support the eastern part of Kanawa County
- 1:40Speaker 2: and also support the Appalachian Outlaw Trail. And it's also
- 1:44Speaker 2: Memorial Day weekend coming up and they are having some
- 1:48Speaker 2: fun things taking place. And then a little later we're
- 1:50Speaker 2: going to talk about apprenticeships. That's one of my favorite
- 1:52Speaker 2: things because we are teaching skills. The unions are teaching
- 1:57Speaker 2: skills and paying people at the same time and also
- 2:00Speaker 2: helping to keep them on the right track. So that's
- 2:04Speaker 2: what's coming up. So you want to stick around, you
- 2:06Speaker 2: can call us a guarant on the Guarantee Bank hotline
- 2:10Speaker 2: at three zero four three four five five eight five eight,
- 2:14Speaker 2: or Tony the Taylor Text at three zero four nine
- 2:18Speaker 2: three five five zero zero eight. And Stephanie Paully is
- 2:23Speaker 2: the producer and keeping us on. And also my buddy
- 2:27Speaker 2: Ryan Nicholson, whose dry humor is the driest in all
- 2:33Speaker 2: of the state of West Virginia, and he's really funny.
- 2:37Speaker 2: You just got to keep up with him. And again,
- 2:40Speaker 2: I'm Natalie Tennant, as I said, and so let's just
- 2:44Speaker 2: get to it. If you have calls, if you have
- 2:45Speaker 2: text please send them along because we are now talking
- 2:49Speaker 2: to an old friend, and I know you're here all
- 2:51Speaker 2: the time, and you and Dave. And when Dave said, oh,
- 2:55Speaker 2: you're gonna have to have You're gonna have to interview
- 2:56Speaker 2: Millie Snyder. She comes every Wednesday, I'm like, really, we
- 3:00Speaker 2: go way way back about nineteen ninety.
- 3:04Speaker 3: It was yeah, No, I think yes. I think it was.
- 3:07Speaker 2: Because I was the Mountaineer, Yeah, and you were want
- 3:11Speaker 2: of it Beck.
- 3:12Speaker 3: And the thought that one of you dressed up like that,
- 3:16Speaker 3: how could I get.
- 3:17Speaker 2: It's called it outfit and you have to be a
- 3:19Speaker 2: student of West Virginia University and try out to be
- 3:21Speaker 2: the Mountaineer mascot, And that's kind of what it was.
- 3:24Speaker 2: It was like this this women's event or something, and
- 3:31Speaker 2: you were you were a woman owned business and one
- 3:34Speaker 2: of few, especially nineteen ninety, but you started even before that.
- 3:38Speaker 3: Yes, I came to Charleston, West Virginia in nineteen sixty nine,
- 3:42Speaker 3: which was just after the covered wagons moved exactly seemingly
- 3:48Speaker 3: because it was such a long time ago. And when
- 3:50Speaker 3: I told my family in Baltimore that I'm coming to
- 3:53Speaker 3: West Virginia, they thought I sent the planet Mars and
- 3:57Speaker 3: they well, they never came here, and then they came
- 4:01Speaker 3: to visit, and I was afraid they weren't going to
- 4:03Speaker 3: leave because they loved it here. And so it was
- 4:07Speaker 3: a love story for me because they were happy that
- 4:11Speaker 3: I was here. But I cannot put into enough words,
- 4:15Speaker 3: however time, however much time there is to say it,
- 4:19Speaker 3: how grateful I am to be a mountaineer, right to
- 4:22Speaker 3: be here, and to have had the opportunity to help
- 4:26Speaker 3: people in the way that I have, which is simply
- 4:29Speaker 3: to show them what they are capable of doing. You see,
- 4:32Speaker 3: I can never lose anybody's weight. I have to help
- 4:35Speaker 3: you lose it. But it's about education and knowing that
- 4:40Speaker 3: you're important enough to eat in a healthy way and
- 4:43Speaker 3: after weight watchers. And I only did that for forty
- 4:46Speaker 3: seven years because I started all of this when I
- 4:49Speaker 3: was I think four, Yes, because.
- 4:52Speaker 2: At eighty oh, how old are you now?
- 4:54Speaker 3: Well, I'm eighty three, and I know I don't look it, no,
- 4:57Speaker 3: and I don't act it, and I don't feel it,
- 4:59Speaker 3: and I'm very great for that. But it's also a
- 5:01Speaker 3: part of the way that I've been eating for so
- 5:04Speaker 3: many years, because eating healthy has many many benefits. My
- 5:09Speaker 3: family didn't have all that good health. My father died
- 5:12Speaker 3: when he was young, My brother died when he was young.
- 5:15Speaker 3: My mother did make it to ninety three, but my
- 5:18Speaker 3: mother was She was very unconventional in that she walked
- 5:21Speaker 3: everywhere that she had to go. Because my husband at
- 5:25Speaker 3: the time tried to teach her how to drive, and
- 5:28Speaker 3: when he came into the house and all the blood
- 5:30Speaker 3: drained out of his face, he said, I can't do it. Really,
- 5:33Speaker 3: I can't do it. So my mother walked everywhere, and
- 5:36Speaker 3: that was very unconventional back then, right, And so she
- 5:41Speaker 3: made it to ninety three years and it was pretty remarkable.
- 5:44Speaker 2: She lived in Baltimore all that time.
- 5:46Speaker 3: Oh yes, But the last four and a half months
- 5:48Speaker 3: of her life, I kind of kidnapped her, didn't kind of.
- 5:51Speaker 3: I kidnapped her from the nursing home that my sister
- 5:54Speaker 3: put her in, and I brought her to Charleston, and
- 5:58Speaker 3: she finished her remaining years in my care at my home.
- 6:02Speaker 3: Wow and the dogs, and she would just sit outside
- 6:07Speaker 3: with the dogs and she would speak Yiddish to them,
- 6:10Speaker 3: and she knew that the dogs understood her. They didn't
- 6:13Speaker 3: understand her, but they acted like they did because it
- 6:16Speaker 3: was a lot, I think so it was a little
- 6:19Speaker 3: bit of a love affair in so many different directions.
- 6:22Speaker 2: That's just a great story, it is. Why did you
- 6:26Speaker 2: choose West Virginia? Was it you or your husband that
- 6:29Speaker 2: said we're going to Charleston.
- 6:31Speaker 3: Well, we were on the way to Columbus to visit
- 6:34Speaker 3: some of Harvey's friends with whom he was in the army,
- 6:37Speaker 3: and the Automobile Club routed us across Virginia because we
- 6:41Speaker 3: were working for a weight watcher franchisee in Virginia.
- 6:45Speaker 2: Okay, so we know that you were clear. So when
- 6:47Speaker 2: did you start weight walking? Not start? When did you
- 6:50Speaker 2: become working for weight Watchers even before nineteen Oh?
- 6:53Speaker 3: Well yes, well see I joined as a member in
- 6:56Speaker 3: nineteen sixty six. But I didn't want to join weight
- 6:58Speaker 3: Watchers because I did want to fail again. I had
- 7:02Speaker 3: been failing at weight loss all my life, and so
- 7:05Speaker 3: when it was my older sister who insisted that I
- 7:08Speaker 3: go with her, I'm not going to share with you
- 7:11Speaker 3: the words that transpired between us. They were ugly, they
- 7:14Speaker 3: were unkind. But Harriet was the chief name caller in
- 7:18Speaker 3: my life, and none of those words were kind. And
- 7:22Speaker 3: perhaps she thought that if she could insult me enough
- 7:25Speaker 3: that would spur me into action. And what it did,
- 7:28Speaker 3: it spurred me into getting to the refrigerator faster because
- 7:31Speaker 3: I needed the food and I needed to be I
- 7:35Speaker 3: wanted all the bad things to be silent. So food
- 7:38Speaker 3: did that for me. So when it was her idea
- 7:40Speaker 3: that I joined weight watchers, I said, I'm not going
- 7:43Speaker 3: to your watcher's weight or whatever you call it, and
- 7:45Speaker 3: I didn't go. Try to make the story short. And
- 7:49Speaker 3: around that time, I was dating this guy named Harvey
- 7:53Speaker 3: and he had a weight problem, and we went out
- 7:56Speaker 3: to eat a lot, and we went to places that
- 7:59Speaker 3: served a lot of food, always the two for one.
- 8:02Speaker 3: And that didn't mean we split it. He had two
- 8:04Speaker 3: for one and I had two for one. We just
- 8:07Speaker 3: we just got a lot more food for less money.
- 8:09Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 8:09Speaker 2: And love will do that to you too, won't it.
- 8:11Speaker 3: Oh my goodness, it blinds everything. Yes. And so one
- 8:16Speaker 3: particular night on a Sunday, we always went to Little
- 8:19Speaker 3: Italy in Baltimore.
- 8:20Speaker 2: Yeah, And he said.
- 8:21Speaker 3: To me, any and Harvey had a wonderful singing voice.
- 8:24Speaker 3: It was just like it was magic. And I met
- 8:27Speaker 3: him at a singing teachers And that's another story altogether.
- 8:30Speaker 3: And I have podcasts that are coming out that are
- 8:32Speaker 3: going to tell this whole story. Oh really, but Harvey
- 8:35Speaker 3: said to me. You know, in choir practice, I was
- 8:37Speaker 3: short wended, and here was my opening. I said, Harvey,
- 8:40Speaker 3: you know you're fat. You need to I don't wait
- 8:43Speaker 3: a minute, I don't say that to anybody.
- 8:45Speaker 2: Well wait a minute, why did you say that if
- 8:47Speaker 2: your sister said mean things to you and that didn't
- 8:51Speaker 2: Because I.
- 8:52Speaker 3: Had an ulterior motive, And here it comes. I told
- 8:55Speaker 3: him that he needs to go to weight watchers because
- 8:58Speaker 3: he's going to go and he's going to find out
- 9:01Speaker 3: that it doesn't work. So then with that ammunition, I'm
- 9:04Speaker 3: going to tell Harriet where she can put the next
- 9:07Speaker 3: suggestion to join what something? That's I mean, it was
- 9:12Speaker 3: all in.
- 9:13Speaker 2: My oh and what happened? Harriet was right all along, wasn't.
- 9:16Speaker 3: She Well, we're not going to go there.
- 9:18Speaker 5: See.
- 9:18Speaker 2: Did you guys yell at each other in Yiddish?
- 9:21Speaker 3: You ever use sometimes?
- 9:22Speaker 4: Oh?
- 9:22Speaker 2: Yes, okay, yeah, yeah, okay.
- 9:25Speaker 3: So I would call her as sugar enough and a
- 9:29Speaker 3: sugar that means you're a crazy person, and other words
- 9:32Speaker 3: that I don't think should be said on the air because.
- 9:35Speaker 2: Somebody will producers we have seven second delay? Do we?
- 9:39Speaker 2: I think they?
- 9:40Speaker 4: Oh?
- 9:41Speaker 2: H they don't. They should have for me, I'm going,
- 9:44Speaker 2: I'm coming into.
- 9:45Speaker 3: Harvey promised me that he would go, but it took
- 9:48Speaker 3: him nine weeks to actually go because in those years
- 9:51Speaker 3: Wait Watchers only had one nighttime meeting in Baltimore, and
- 9:55Speaker 3: I worked on Thursday night. I mean, I could have
- 9:57Speaker 3: asked for the night off, but why do they do that?
- 10:00Speaker 3: That's why would I do that? That doesn't make sense.
- 10:01Speaker 3: So eight for nine weeks, he put it off, put
- 10:04Speaker 3: it off, put it off, And finally on September first,
- 10:07Speaker 3: nineteen sixty six. You know that the date is emblazoned
- 10:10Speaker 3: in my brain. And he didn't call me to cancel.
- 10:13Speaker 3: And I said to myself, I wonder if he's going
- 10:15Speaker 3: to go to that thing tonight by himself. Now he's
- 10:17Speaker 3: not with you. You still weren't going imbut going. He's
- 10:21Speaker 3: got to go and find out it's a joke. It
- 10:23Speaker 3: doesn't work, because I'm not gonna fail again. If God
- 10:27Speaker 3: wanted me to be thin, God made me thin.
- 10:30Speaker 2: You know, and there are folks listening because I want
- 10:32Speaker 2: to get to that too. So if if you want
- 10:34Speaker 2: to call in and ask some questions those who know
- 10:36Speaker 2: about weight watchers too, because Millie knows that for forty
- 10:42Speaker 2: seven year or longer it's been a success. The phone
- 10:44Speaker 2: number is the Guaranteed Bank hotline at three zero four
- 10:48Speaker 2: three four five five eight five eights. Because that's what
- 10:51Speaker 2: made weight watchers such as success too, not just the
- 10:55Speaker 2: programs of how to take care of yourself, but that
- 10:59Speaker 2: inspiration that you come back. Certainly, Harriet probably wasn't the
- 11:02Speaker 2: leader of it when she's going around being saying mean
- 11:05Speaker 2: names to people, right.
- 11:07Speaker 3: But she said it to everybody about something. If you
- 11:09Speaker 3: didn't do what she wanted, if you didn't march to
- 11:11Speaker 3: her her step. Yeah, she she had a few choice
- 11:14Speaker 3: words and phrase.
- 11:15Speaker 2: She's still around.
- 11:16Speaker 3: No, Harriet sadly lost her battle to pancreatic cancer in
- 11:20Speaker 3: twenty fifteen. And although we had a very very difficult relationship,
- 11:26Speaker 3: I sometimes still think how not sometimes, but it just
- 11:30Speaker 3: lives in my brain. I'm sad that she suffered so
- 11:34Speaker 3: to get to her end because pancreatic cancer is pretty
- 11:38Speaker 3: pretty vicious. Now there's some research that's coming that says
- 11:43Speaker 3: it could possibly work, but it's after Harriet's time. So
- 11:48Speaker 3: although there was a lot of ugly stuff between us.
- 11:51Speaker 3: I never wished her ill in that respect, but I
- 11:54Speaker 3: don't know whether what her words are Harriet put Harriet
- 11:57Speaker 3: took me to my first bariatric doctor for appills when
- 12:00Speaker 3: I was eleven. Nobody does that to a child, but
- 12:05Speaker 3: Harriet did it to me because I wasn't acceptable. I
- 12:08Speaker 3: wasn't I was fat, I was useless. I would never
- 12:12Speaker 3: amount to anything.
- 12:13Speaker 2: There were bariatric doctors when you were Oh absolutely, my goodness,
- 12:17Speaker 2: and you were you How much older is she than you?
- 12:19Speaker 3: She was thirteen years older, Dan, She was born nineteen
- 12:23Speaker 3: twenty nine.
- 12:24Speaker 2: So she was twenty four, telling you the eleven year old, right, yeah,
- 12:29Speaker 2: well eleven plus was twenty four, thirteen years older than they.
- 12:34Speaker 2: So she's twenty four, you're eleven, and she's telling like
- 12:38Speaker 2: she's an adult.
- 12:39Speaker 3: Well that's abroad.
- 12:41Speaker 2: Well I know I have I have siblings who are
- 12:45Speaker 2: But I mean, I did anything they wanted me to do.
- 12:48Speaker 2: If they told me I was going to be great,
- 12:49Speaker 2: I was going to be great. If they told me
- 12:51Speaker 2: I was nott the brett, I was not the breat
- 12:53Speaker 2: so wow, okay.
- 12:55Speaker 3: So I didn't go. I didn't go. And then finally
- 12:58Speaker 3: when Harvey did go and he didn't call me to cancel,
- 13:01Speaker 3: and I worked late on Thursday night, that wasn't an excuse.
- 13:04Speaker 3: When I got to the house, my mother was talking
- 13:07Speaker 3: to him on the phone and she handed me the
- 13:09Speaker 3: receiver and he said to me, you're going next week,
- 13:13Speaker 3: and you know that falling in love stuff. I said, okay, honey,
- 13:18Speaker 3: what people what people don't realize is I mean. What
- 13:21Speaker 3: I can't say on the air is what I said
- 13:24Speaker 3: after I hung.
- 13:25Speaker 2: On the phone.
- 13:26Speaker 3: Can't you say that on the air, because those are
- 13:28Speaker 3: not nice words, even in h Yeah, in Yiddish, in English,
- 13:32Speaker 3: in any language you want to use. Because I said
- 13:34Speaker 3: things like this is the ridiculous thing. I'm not gonna
- 13:38Speaker 3: It's not gonna work. So I went the following Thursday,
- 13:42Speaker 3: and I didn't like the leader. I didn't like her dress,
- 13:44Speaker 3: I didn't like her husband. And they tried to sell
- 13:47Speaker 3: me a food scale and I said, I've never weighed
- 13:49Speaker 3: my food. He said, well, we weigh our food. So
- 13:52Speaker 3: I bought a scale five dollars in it.
- 13:55Speaker 2: Haang, that's a lot.
- 13:56Speaker 3: And the scale said postal Service. It didn't say weight watchers.
- 13:59Speaker 3: It said post Service. That bought a scale, and then
- 14:02Speaker 3: I didn't like the wayre and I mean I just
- 14:05Speaker 3: didn't like I didn't want to be there.
- 14:07Speaker 2: And all right, well we're going to find out what
- 14:10Speaker 2: turned around and how we knew about Millie Snyder. We're
- 14:13Speaker 2: really supposed to be talking about the Mediterranean lifestyle and we'll.
- 14:18Speaker 3: Get back and come back.
- 14:19Speaker 2: Well, no, we're just going to take a quick break
- 14:20Speaker 2: and I can come back. So we're here on the

- 16:35Speaker 2: and I've asked to get to continue to talk to
- 16:38Speaker 2: Millie Snyder because we haven't really talked about mediterran lifestyle.
- 16:43Speaker 3: I've only been doing that for eight years. But I
- 16:45Speaker 3: did that after weight Watchers, right, But I want to
- 16:48Speaker 3: go back to the beginning. But so I didn't want
- 16:50Speaker 3: to be there. I didn't like it. I hated everything. Yeah,
- 16:53Speaker 3: And then on the first week I went on it,
- 16:56Speaker 3: and I knew that there's only one way to handle this,
- 17:01Speaker 3: and that is since I agreed to go, I am
- 17:03Speaker 3: going to eat as though a famine is going to
- 17:06Speaker 3: fall on Baltimore City because Weight Watchers is going to
- 17:09Speaker 3: take everything that I love away. So I went back
- 17:13Speaker 3: the next week and I thought that I should have
- 17:16Speaker 3: lost twenty pounds. Oh I did that the week before
- 17:19Speaker 3: I joined.
- 17:20Speaker 2: Oh oh, you ate everything every week before.
- 17:22Speaker 3: You if it wasn't nailed down and not crawling, I
- 17:25Speaker 3: ate it. So then I joined weight Watchers and that week.
- 17:29Speaker 3: I followed it. I did everything right. I followed that
- 17:32Speaker 3: piece of paper. I even weighed my food on that
- 17:35Speaker 3: stupid scale. And you suffered, and you were, Oh did
- 17:38Speaker 3: I suffer? My Goodnes the Greek restaurant that made my
- 17:41Speaker 3: breakfast every morning. I thought they were going to have
- 17:43Speaker 3: to go out of business because I really spent a
- 17:46Speaker 3: lot of money every morning for breakfast. But I ate
- 17:49Speaker 3: breakfast with my mother. But I never told my mother
- 17:51Speaker 3: what I ate for breakfast when I got to work.
- 17:54Speaker 3: That was another story altogether. Oh and so I go
- 17:57Speaker 3: back and I joined at two hundred and four and
- 17:59Speaker 3: a quarter palms, yeah, and a not very But then
- 18:04Speaker 3: I was.
- 18:05Speaker 2: Just kind of giving you anything I could hear.
- 18:07Speaker 3: I think you were.
- 18:08Speaker 2: Six eleven too, of fours, five.
- 18:10Speaker 3: Of course, yes, and very large bones. Look at the
- 18:13Speaker 3: size of the bones. You've never seen a hand that
- 18:16Speaker 3: big in your whole. Yours is bigger. No, they're not. Yes,
- 18:22Speaker 3: it is her hand is her hand is bigger.
- 18:25Speaker 2: You're eighty three and I'm forty three.
- 18:29Speaker 3: You are only forty three. Wonderful God, I'm impressed.
- 18:33Speaker 2: No, let's just say that I take advantage of senior discounts.
- 18:37Speaker 2: I don't care. If they're going to give them, I'm
- 18:39Speaker 2: taking them and I a military discount. Do you take them?
- 18:43Speaker 3: I'm going to start.
- 18:44Speaker 2: You don't.
- 18:45Speaker 3: I don't know about them.
- 18:46Speaker 5: I have to.
- 18:47Speaker 3: I need to spend some time there everywhere. Okay, I'm
- 18:50Speaker 3: gonna start Ie Hop. But you don't go to I Hop,
- 18:52Speaker 3: not anymore.
- 18:53Speaker 4: You used to.
- 18:54Speaker 3: It used to be called the International House of Pancakes
- 18:57Speaker 3: now but they they said, look how much KFC Dougie
- 19:01Speaker 3: frit Oh. I did that afterwards. That's another story. It's
- 19:04Speaker 3: on the pop.
- 19:04Speaker 2: Okay, So how much did you lose the first week?
- 19:06Speaker 3: The first week, yes, three quarters of one pound, and
- 19:09Speaker 3: that I'm going to find the leader. See, I didn't
- 19:11Speaker 3: like her dress the first week. The second week it
- 19:13Speaker 3: was even uglier, and I told her I won't be back.
- 19:16Speaker 3: I said it might work for them, but it don't
- 19:18Speaker 3: work for me. And she called me Millie. Oh, you
- 19:21Speaker 3: don't like my name anyway.
- 19:24Speaker 2: She said to you, Millie, you don't like my name.
- 19:26Speaker 3: No, I said to her, Oh, she called me Millie
- 19:30Speaker 3: And I said, oh, you must not like my name.
- 19:33Speaker 3: I don't want to be there. And she was wearing
- 19:35Speaker 3: the ugly the dress from the first week was ugly.
- 19:38Speaker 3: The dress from the second week was uglier. And this
- 19:40Speaker 3: is the.
- 19:40Speaker 2: Nineteen sixties, nine nine, well, still the sixties.
- 19:44Speaker 3: But that's when I no, I'm sorry. Yeah, it was
- 19:45Speaker 3: nineteen sixty six, September first, that was when Harvey joined. Well,
- 19:50Speaker 3: that's my date was September the eighth. That's that's written
- 19:54Speaker 3: in an infamy. And so I didn't like her dress,
- 19:58Speaker 3: and she said do it for me for one more week.
- 20:01Speaker 3: I say I didn't like her what who?
- 20:05Speaker 2: What to? Well, that's what I'm saying. Then why why
- 20:08Speaker 2: did she use that term do it for me?
- 20:11Speaker 3: Because here she was out of anything else. Because I
- 20:13Speaker 3: was so angry. You could feel my anger. I don't
- 20:17Speaker 3: want to be there, and I don't want And the
- 20:19Speaker 3: reason I don't want to be there is I have
- 20:21Speaker 3: failed consistently over the years of my life.
- 20:24Speaker 2: I'm just afraid to fail. You know what in your
- 20:26Speaker 2: story is probably resonating with other folks. Of course, you
- 20:29Speaker 2: found so many reasons. The dress is ugly. I have
- 20:33Speaker 2: to use a ups scale. I don't want to fail again.
- 20:37Speaker 2: I mean I can, and I don't want to eat.
- 20:40Speaker 3: I want to eat the food I like because.
- 20:42Speaker 2: I thing is you told me one time. Remember I
- 20:45Speaker 2: used to interview you on the morning TV show that
- 20:47Speaker 2: I could eat a big mac.
- 20:49Speaker 1: That was it.
- 20:50Speaker 2: That's all you could eat for the day. But you
- 20:51Speaker 2: could have that big.
- 20:52Speaker 3: Mac because and back then, I believe you counted points
- 20:57Speaker 3: on weight Watchers, which was the concept.
- 20:59Speaker 2: What do we do now? We still killt points, don't
- 21:01Speaker 2: we some.
- 21:02Speaker 3: I don't know. I don't know because now I do Mediterranean?
- 21:05Speaker 2: Well, tell me why the Mediterranean? Then?
- 21:08Speaker 3: Well, because when I sold weight Watchers, I was then
- 21:11Speaker 3: a subject to a non compete agreement for three years.
- 21:15Speaker 3: And I said to someone who was a nutritionist here
- 21:18Speaker 3: in Charleston, I want to do what I always did
- 21:20Speaker 3: because I miss people. And she said, before you do anything, Mellie,
- 21:23Speaker 3: take a look at Mediterranean. And I did and she
- 21:27Speaker 3: I bought a book and I put myself on it
- 21:30Speaker 3: and I followed it for five weeks and I've never
- 21:33Speaker 3: looked back. I have never eaten better, felt better than
- 21:37Speaker 3: I feel now. And I am not on a diet.
- 21:40Speaker 3: If you saw what I had for dinner last night,
- 21:42Speaker 3: you would say, move over and share it with me.
- 21:44Speaker 2: What'd you have?
- 21:45Speaker 3: I had the most magnificent salad, and in it I
- 21:49Speaker 3: had chicken, I had egg, I had salad, dressing, every
- 21:53Speaker 3: kind of vegetable you could imagine. And in addition to that,
- 21:57Speaker 3: I put not queen wha, I put the faroh on it.
- 22:01Speaker 3: Oh and it was so absolutely delicious. So I've learned
- 22:06Speaker 3: even more than I learned at weight watchers. I really
- 22:09Speaker 3: with Mediterranean have learned how to eat and be healthy.
- 22:13Speaker 3: And it's the hell do.
- 22:14Speaker 2: We do that? Because I would eat like that if
- 22:17Speaker 2: it were easy. But no, I went to Fairmont yesterday
- 22:20Speaker 2: and then to Clarksburg, and you know what I had
- 22:22Speaker 2: for dinner. Tell me call cessnos pepperwarn and roll with
- 22:25Speaker 2: everything mixed peppers.
- 22:26Speaker 3: Well, you were in Italian country.
- 22:28Speaker 2: I'm always, sister. I'm always an Italian country.
- 22:32Speaker 3: And Italian and Italian food isn't bad if you know
- 22:35Speaker 3: how to pay.
- 22:36Speaker 2: If you walk around like your mother did when you
- 22:38Speaker 2: go to Italy, you know, their calves are as hard
- 22:41Speaker 2: as rocks, and they walk everywhere, and they.
- 22:45Speaker 3: And the real Mediterranean part of the world that they
- 22:48Speaker 3: don't buy a nineteen hundred things at the supermarket every week.
- 22:52Speaker 3: They buy what they need for a day or two.
- 22:55Speaker 3: They aren't big freezers and big refrigerators and everything is fresh,
- 23:00Speaker 3: and that's what And we can do it here if
- 23:03Speaker 3: you shop the perimeter of your supermarket and it's all available.
- 23:07Speaker 2: The perimeter, not the center exact.
- 23:09Speaker 3: The center is where all the processed food is, and
- 23:11Speaker 3: the processed food is doing us in. People don't believe
- 23:15Speaker 3: it until something bad happens, and then there's the right
- 23:18Speaker 3: and then there's a huge elephant in the room. So
- 23:21Speaker 3: many people are injecting themselves with GLP and that's not
- 23:25Speaker 3: an answer that worries you. Why because there's downsides that
- 23:30Speaker 3: are already rearing their ugly head. And if you use
- 23:33Speaker 3: something artificial to lose weight, what have you learned? Absolutely nothing?
- 23:39Speaker 3: And that's the biggest concern. I've been down this road before.
- 23:42Speaker 3: Remember the days of fen fen and.
- 23:44Speaker 2: Oh yeah, diet my mom did the you know, diet
- 23:48Speaker 2: pills and cigarettes.
- 23:49Speaker 3: Oh well it must have been the cigarettes, right.
- 23:53Speaker 2: But that's the thing. So we need to help because
- 23:55Speaker 2: folks will say they were like you, they were mad.
- 23:58Speaker 2: They know they're not going to do it anything, they're
- 24:00Speaker 2: never going to lose weight. They don't want to fail again.
- 24:04Speaker 2: But they've taken they've taken the shots. The they're GLP ones.
- 24:10Speaker 3: Yeah, and they're losing weight.
- 24:11Speaker 2: They've lost weight now they feel good, So now what
- 24:15Speaker 2: can they? Can they go? They can't stay on that forever?
- 24:18Speaker 2: Now how do they How do they transition to a
- 24:22Speaker 2: good diet? They need the Mediterranean.
- 24:24Speaker 3: They need to join and need to learn how to
- 24:27Speaker 3: eat correctly, because without that, what do you do? It's
- 24:30Speaker 3: like the sixty four thousand dollars question. I don't know
- 24:33Speaker 3: the answer. I do know the answer on the Mediterranean lifestyle.
- 24:37Speaker 3: It's been around forever. It's old and the company that
- 24:41Speaker 3: supports everything I teach, it's called Old Way.
- 24:44Speaker 2: You tell people how they can get a hold of
- 24:45Speaker 2: you and sign up.
- 24:46Speaker 3: Well, we meet at the American Job Center on Leon
- 24:50Speaker 3: Sullivan Way Thursday morning at ten o'clock and they can well, actually, no,
- 24:56Speaker 3: we don't meet at ten o'clock. We made at nine
- 24:57Speaker 3: point thirty. What was I thinking? And then I have
- 25:00Speaker 3: a phone number if people want to reach us, go ahead.
- 25:03Speaker 3: It's six eight one three one three seven seven seventy five.
- 25:08Speaker 3: And joining us is one of the best things you'll
- 25:10Speaker 3: ever do for you. If I have a gall in
- 25:12Speaker 3: my group who came to me with non alcoholic cirrhosis
- 25:17Speaker 3: and her neathrologists sent her to the Mediterranean lifestyle. She
- 25:22Speaker 3: is seventy percent better and she's soon going to get
- 25:26Speaker 3: a clean bill of health because, like so many that
- 25:29Speaker 3: are in need of it, she has learned how to
- 25:31Speaker 3: eat healthfully. This is not a diet. If anyone thinks
- 25:35Speaker 3: that Mediterranean is a diet, it's called Mediterranean diet. I
- 25:39Speaker 3: hate the word diet, but it's still Mediterranean diet. And
- 25:43Speaker 3: it's a fabulous way to eat.
- 25:45Speaker 2: And the phone number to call Millia six eight one
- 25:47Speaker 2: three one three seven seven seven five Thursday mornings at
- 25:52Speaker 2: nine thirty at the American.
- 25:55Speaker 3: Job Center Job Center and it's so close to Washington Street.
- 25:59Speaker 2: Close to everything that's right. Thank you Millie for coming in.
- 26:02Speaker 2: I know we got a little off, but the point
- 26:04Speaker 2: is there that you can do it. And she's one
- 26:07Speaker 2: who who fought it for years and years and years, and.
- 26:12Speaker 3: I ain't fight it anymore. Thank you. It is the
- 26:15Speaker 3: light for me to be with you today.
- 26:16Speaker 2: Thanks Rag, we gotta do this. I knew you when
- 26:19Speaker 2: I know exactly. It's nine thirty three, almost thirty four.

- 29:52Speaker 2: pretty good day today except for the rain that's coming.
- 29:54Speaker 2: But we need the rain too.
- 29:55Speaker 14: Now.
- 29:55Speaker 2: I don't know how that's going to impact these two
- 29:58Speaker 2: gentlemen who are here, Chris Ingram and Eric Larch, who
- 30:03Speaker 2: have become household names in the Kunau Valley. Right.
- 30:07Speaker 15: Absolutely, Yeah, it's one of those things that Chris and
- 30:10Speaker 15: I are getting ready to throw our phones over the
- 30:12Speaker 15: hill for looking at the weather. But it's a rain
- 30:14Speaker 15: or shine weekend for us.
- 30:16Speaker 2: That's right, I know because there with Appalachian Outlaw Trail,
- 30:20Speaker 2: it is Memorial Day weekend. Do you remember October fifteenth,
- 30:23Speaker 2: twenty twenty five when you said we're doing this, we're
- 30:26Speaker 2: gonna have it by Memorial Day.
- 30:28Speaker 15: Yeah, yeah, it's been not very many months ago, it
- 30:31Speaker 15: feels like for us.
- 30:32Speaker 5: Yeah, I was absolutely flown by. But you know, for
- 30:36Speaker 5: someone going up there, they can tell the difference. But
- 30:38Speaker 5: for us, it's like.
- 30:39Speaker 2: I haven't been up since October fifteenth.
- 30:41Speaker 4: I drive by it.
- 30:43Speaker 5: Yeah, you'll be able to tell a difference whenever you
- 30:44Speaker 5: come up.
- 30:45Speaker 2: When can I come I legally? I mean it's open
- 30:48Speaker 2: right now, but there's gates on it.
- 30:49Speaker 15: Yeah, so we were gated there at the base of
- 30:51Speaker 15: the hill. We're going to be open fully our grand
- 30:56Speaker 15: opening later in the year for the trail system in
- 30:58Speaker 15: the additional add one of the campsites. But this upcoming
- 31:02Speaker 15: weekend we're going to be doing an event that's just
- 31:04Speaker 15: to get the locals up there, let them take a
- 31:06Speaker 15: look at what all we've gotten done, get together, enjoy
- 31:09Speaker 15: some live music, we've got two days of concerts. We
- 31:13Speaker 15: have fireworks, professional fireworks Saturday night. We have got a
- 31:18Speaker 15: bunch of food trucks coming up from Canall City, a
- 31:21Speaker 15: handful and you know, some from even Clariant and Jackson County,
- 31:24Speaker 15: some from the other end of Kanaal County to come
- 31:27Speaker 15: up and join us with a different area of different
- 31:28Speaker 15: foods and treats.
- 31:29Speaker 8: We've got some vendors showing up.
- 31:31Speaker 15: We've got off road activities scheduled for both days, and
- 31:35Speaker 15: our special guest is the Governor Saturday, I'm going to
- 31:38Speaker 15: come up and hang out with us for a bit.
- 31:39Speaker 2: So when you say special off road activities, what do
- 31:42Speaker 2: you mean.
- 31:43Speaker 15: We've got some facilities that we've built on site for
- 31:47Speaker 15: UTV training and then motorcycle training, so we're gonna have
- 31:49Speaker 15: those open to the public to be able to come
- 31:52Speaker 15: and run through some different obstacle obstacle courses, some jumps
- 31:56Speaker 15: and burms and hill climbs and things that we're gonna run.
- 32:00Speaker 15: All of our our participants that come in rent units
- 32:03Speaker 15: off of them have to go through these training courses,
- 32:05Speaker 15: so we're gonna have those open and they're they're directly
- 32:08Speaker 15: adjacent to our activity and like festival area right, so
- 32:11Speaker 15: like you can come and watch a concert and you
- 32:13Speaker 15: can still see UTVs and dirt bikes and full sized
- 32:16Speaker 15: vehicles traveling on different obstacles directly from kind of the
- 32:19Speaker 15: event space.
- 32:20Speaker 2: Okay, I I just thought you weren't running. You're not
- 32:23Speaker 2: running full trails. This is just the training part.
- 32:27Speaker 5: Yes, yes, the actual full trails. We're not quite ready yet.
- 32:29Speaker 5: We still have some cleanup work to do, some signage
- 32:32Speaker 5: to put out, some ratings to put on the trails,
- 32:34Speaker 5: things of that nature. Uh, we're getting close, but we're
- 32:36Speaker 5: not quite there yet. But this is like a little
- 32:38Speaker 5: preview section that we are. We have ready, so we're
- 32:41Speaker 5: gonna let people start running that.
- 32:45Speaker 2: I'm gonna ask this and you can just tell me
- 32:47Speaker 2: on two months from now. But when will trails be running?
- 32:50Speaker 5: I think I think we're shooting for later this summer,
- 32:53Speaker 5: but we don't want to say for sure yet.
- 32:55Speaker 2: That's fair.
- 32:55Speaker 8: There's just a lot to get done between. You know,
- 32:57Speaker 8: our mapping.
- 32:59Speaker 15: We've got a national break partner on x off Road
- 33:01Speaker 15: that's been they've had employees down there mapping for the
- 33:04Speaker 15: last few months, and just a lot of it's a
- 33:07Speaker 15: lot of trail.
- 33:07Speaker 8: It's a lot of stuff.
- 33:08Speaker 15: You know, we got to run every single trail and
- 33:10Speaker 15: it's not just running it with a GPS, it's they
- 33:13Speaker 15: have got to stop and take pictures of every obstacle
- 33:15Speaker 15: to do ratings. They've got to stop and change whether
- 33:18Speaker 15: it's a tree that's down or it's a mud hole.
- 33:20Speaker 15: They have to mark every single thing. So, like, we
- 33:22Speaker 15: just had a guy here over the weekend and he's
- 33:23Speaker 15: probably has a file of over a thousand pictures and
- 33:26Speaker 15: he probably only traverse one hundred miles and our trail
- 33:28Speaker 15: system is going to be somewhere in the neighborhood north
- 33:30Speaker 15: of three hundred. So, like the amount of time that
- 33:33Speaker 15: they're actually putting in is really.
- 33:36Speaker 8: Is really hard.
- 33:37Speaker 15: And so it's something that's you know, it's it's it's
- 33:40Speaker 15: kind of like we would like to see it progress quicker.
- 33:43Speaker 15: But at the same time, if you look what they're
- 33:44Speaker 15: actually going to produce when it's done, if you're going
- 33:46Speaker 15: to be able to pull up a map before you go,
- 33:48Speaker 15: you know exactly every obstacle, you know the trail rating,
- 33:51Speaker 15: you know the difficulty, you know what vehicle is appropriate
- 33:53Speaker 15: for that trail. I think we're gonna have a really
- 33:56Speaker 15: nice polished product when we're actually you know, ready to.
- 33:58Speaker 2: Okay, Okay, so that's it's exactly why you want to wait.
- 34:01Speaker 2: So in the meantime, so we know we've got this down,
- 34:04Speaker 2: there's there's probably never been something like this in the
- 34:07Speaker 2: eastern part of the county before, except if you guys
- 34:10Speaker 2: just threw some things together before we knew it. No,
- 34:13Speaker 2: as far as our event, like this is like an official.
- 34:15Speaker 15: Yeah, yeah, there's I mean to do a free concert
- 34:18Speaker 15: with bands coming clear from Nashville all over the Appalachian
- 34:21Speaker 15: Basin for two nights of free concerts, professional fireworks, you know,
- 34:25Speaker 15: the food truck gathering, all the big event stage and everything. Yeah,
- 34:29Speaker 15: I mean there's nothing like that that's went on.
- 34:31Speaker 2: That's awesome. Okay. So in the meantime, while there are
- 34:34Speaker 2: folks are you know, chomping at the bit to go
- 34:36Speaker 2: and be ready to run, there are things that we
- 34:40Speaker 2: as a community can do. This is the eastern part
- 34:43Speaker 2: of the county. We're now calling the gateway to the Gorge.
- 34:45Speaker 2: There's going to people. It will be people on the
- 34:47Speaker 2: way going there. One stop that you could also have
- 34:50Speaker 2: is Virginia's Chapelin. If I have time within the next
- 34:53Speaker 2: eighteen minutes. We'll talk about that real quick. But what
- 34:56Speaker 2: folks can do this is a great entrepreneurial opportunity for
- 35:00Speaker 2: people to buy some homes that are on sale up
- 35:04Speaker 2: along there and make airbnbs. Because you all are saying
- 35:09Speaker 2: we need lodging.
- 35:11Speaker 5: Yeah, you know, there's other things like homes that are
- 35:14Speaker 5: needing rehabbed, you know, that are just vacant. Those homes
- 35:17Speaker 5: are great candidates. Commercial spaces that are now empty can
- 35:20Speaker 5: be made into large spaces for people to have lodging.
- 35:24Speaker 5: So people who have lands that don't want to sell
- 35:28Speaker 5: it don't know what to do with it, we open
- 35:31Speaker 5: or open to RV parks. You know, the area really
- 35:33Speaker 5: needs lodging. The closest city center to lodging right now
- 35:36Speaker 5: is the city of Charleston, which is great, but we'd
- 35:38Speaker 5: like to have something closer to the trailhead if possible.
- 35:42Speaker 5: There's going to be needs for food, there's going to
- 35:44Speaker 5: be needs for repairs for the machines, retail, so there's
- 35:48Speaker 5: there's many ways to service the park and we hope
- 35:51Speaker 5: the community gets involved and benefits.
- 35:52Speaker 2: From it well. And here here are some of the
- 35:54Speaker 2: things I went to the community dinner in Campbell's Creek,
- 35:57Speaker 2: and that's always a little space place for me. It's
- 36:01Speaker 2: just it's like five minutes from Charleston, so I'm driving
- 36:04Speaker 2: there and now I look at things in a different light.
- 36:07Speaker 2: Many times, there are homes that look like they could
- 36:10Speaker 2: be renovated or purchased. So if you drove up Campbell's
- 36:14Speaker 2: Creek and then you're like, oh, oh, right, there's a bar. Okay,
- 36:18Speaker 2: oh right, there is Dollar General. Right there is I
- 36:22Speaker 2: don't know if it's a fast check at a grocery store.
- 36:25Speaker 2: And when I go places with my family, like my
- 36:29Speaker 2: brother in law and brothers, they'll be like, yeah, there
- 36:32Speaker 2: was an Airbnb, Like oh, let's go.
- 36:34Speaker 4: To this bar.
- 36:34Speaker 2: Let's let's go get stuff. Like Campbell's Creek is the
- 36:37Speaker 2: perfect area to have Airbnbs to then cater to aot.
- 36:41Speaker 5: Yeah, it's the perfect mix. Like you said, it's very
- 36:43Speaker 5: close to Charleston. Our trails literally lead right down to
- 36:46Speaker 5: Campbell's Creek.
- 36:48Speaker 8: Absolutely, it's a.
- 36:49Speaker 5: Great spot if you wanted to have the mixture of
- 36:51Speaker 5: the city life and the woods life. It's the cool
- 36:54Speaker 5: thing is anything in the Upper Canal Valley.
- 36:56Speaker 2: That's up those hallows, anything exactly.
- 36:58Speaker 8: With a route sixty.
- 36:59Speaker 15: Yep, you can grab let's say in a house or
- 37:03Speaker 15: a house that you may have that you're looking to
- 37:05Speaker 15: move somewhere else. And the nice thing about our trail
- 37:08Speaker 15: system is it's not like it's gated. It's not like
- 37:10Speaker 15: you've got an inner across from rivers That High. You know,
- 37:12Speaker 15: we're going to send the out of state people up
- 37:14Speaker 15: our blacktop road to Riverside High to utilize our facilities.
- 37:18Speaker 15: But if you had something up Campbell Creek, let's saying
- 37:20Speaker 15: you rented out that house. These people can go straight
- 37:22Speaker 15: from their house and go straight onto the trail system.
- 37:24Speaker 8: It's not gated. You know, you can access it from anywhere.
- 37:26Speaker 2: Yes, oh man, Okay, So there's my tip of the
- 37:31Speaker 2: tip of the day, tip of the week because it's
- 37:34Speaker 2: Campbell's Creek. But then there's a lot of places in Bell.
- 37:36Speaker 2: I was bidding on something at Bell it was along
- 37:40Speaker 2: the river. I mean, you all know I'm a big
- 37:44Speaker 2: talker sometimes in a big thinker. I just don't have
- 37:47Speaker 2: the money to back it up. And one of my
- 37:49Speaker 2: brother I'm like, look at that, he said, Natalie. The
- 37:51Speaker 2: location because it was on the river is worth more
- 37:53Speaker 2: than that is worth forty eight thousand dollars that I
- 37:56Speaker 2: didn't have.
- 37:57Speaker 5: But so there's just riverfront property, that's for sure.
- 38:01Speaker 2: Well they're all making any more land either. That's what
- 38:04Speaker 2: we farm people know that all right. So it's Appalachian
- 38:07Speaker 2: Outlaw Trails. This free this Friday and Saturday. Make your
- 38:12Speaker 2: last pitch.
- 38:12Speaker 5: Yeah, Friday, Saturday four twe eleven. We'd love to have
- 38:15Speaker 5: you out. Lots of great food, great bands. I believe
- 38:19Speaker 5: there's five three Friday, two Saturday, some awesome fireworks. This
- 38:23Speaker 5: professional guy, he said, listen, I'm gonna make you a
- 38:25Speaker 5: show to remember. So great fireworks coming Saturday at ten pm.
- 38:29Speaker 5: There'll be a lots of activities. You can watch people
- 38:32Speaker 5: dirt do, dirt drags, barrel racing, rock crawling, hard and
- 38:36Speaker 5: durea of course for the dirt bike guys. Plenty of
- 38:38Speaker 5: things to spectat and do and get you a little preview,
- 38:40Speaker 5: so it'll be really fun of.
- 38:41Speaker 8: It and totally accessible.
- 38:43Speaker 15: One thing we've been asked handful of times is, yeah,
- 38:45Speaker 15: we are an off road park, but you come right
- 38:47Speaker 15: off for out sixty across from Riverside High We have
- 38:49Speaker 15: a run stop light right. We have two lane black
- 38:51Speaker 15: top road that leads you right to the event area.
- 38:52Speaker 15: So you could bring your low two seater car, you
- 38:57Speaker 15: can bring a minivan, you can bring whatever you need
- 38:59Speaker 15: to bring, or you can bring you TV's in. Everybody
- 39:01Speaker 15: is totally welcome, even if you're not in off roading,
- 39:03Speaker 15: come join us for the weekend.
- 39:04Speaker 5: For everybody that's already out in the woods riding on
- 39:07Speaker 5: the backside of the property, you can still come in
- 39:09Speaker 5: from the backside of the property if you're in your
- 39:11Speaker 5: UTV and avoid Route sixty and coming in the backway.
- 39:14Speaker 2: So this is awesome, right or shine, we got It's okay.
- 39:17Speaker 2: There'll be a mudball. That's fine too, Right, you guys
- 39:20Speaker 2: can cover up the bands to just cover the equipment. Hey,
- 39:23Speaker 2: all right, this is great. This is a this is
- 39:26Speaker 2: a good weekend. And if you go a little bit
- 39:28Speaker 2: farther right outside of Glasgow is Virginia's Chapel. It's this
- 39:32Speaker 2: old Civil War church. It's going to be open for
- 39:34Speaker 2: the weekend. And that's a great And that's what's so
- 39:37Speaker 2: great about the Gateway to the Gorge. You have this opportunity,
- 39:41Speaker 2: but you have history, and you have all kinds of
- 39:44Speaker 2: events that are taking place. You know, when Montgomery gets
- 39:47Speaker 2: their splash prow to open. We have all kinds of
- 39:49Speaker 2: things going on in the eastern part of the county.
- 39:51Speaker 2: So gentlemen Chris and Eric, thank you very much, and uh,
- 39:55Speaker 2: we'll keep a track of everything's and we'll be right back. Folks.
- 39:57Speaker 2: It's nine forty seven.

- 43:22Speaker 2: good time. And now we are here with Everett Johnson.
- 43:28Speaker 2: I love talking about apprenticeships. I mean what I consider
- 43:34Speaker 2: apprenticeships are you're don't you don't know anything, you don't
- 43:40Speaker 2: know your head from my own the ground, but yet
- 43:41Speaker 2: you're getting paid to learn how to put things together.
- 43:45Speaker 14: Absolutely, we'll bring people in that has little to no knowledge.
- 43:48Speaker 14: We'll put them through our apprenticeship program. Uh it's a
- 43:52Speaker 14: four year program. They'll come to class about five times
- 43:54Speaker 14: a year each year and another that they'll be working
- 43:56Speaker 14: in a field with a journeyman carpenter learning it.
- 43:59Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 43:59Speaker 14: So yeah, that's a great opportunity for someone that has
- 44:01Speaker 14: no knowledge of the trade at all to get them
- 44:04Speaker 14: through and get them started in a career.
- 44:06Speaker 2: And you're you're with carpenters and a big day. A
- 44:11Speaker 2: big day was yesterday.
- 44:13Speaker 14: Yes, yes, we had our grand opening. We were in
- 44:19Speaker 14: South Charleston since two thousand and one and our program
- 44:23Speaker 14: has you know, growed, you know, quite a bit. We
- 44:28Speaker 14: just didn't have enough space. We was teaching classes at
- 44:31Speaker 14: our center there. We had you know, classes going at
- 44:33Speaker 14: our council building in the basement in Huntington. You know,
- 44:37Speaker 14: so we was all over the place. Yeah, opportunity come
- 44:40Speaker 14: up and we jumped on it to buy the church
- 44:43Speaker 14: down at Nitro in front of the High School. You know,
- 44:45Speaker 14: it's almost doubled our space there. So we've got the
- 44:48Speaker 14: ability to run about twice a monty apprentices to the
- 44:51Speaker 14: program now that we used to have.
- 44:53Speaker 2: And you had the open house and what were you
- 44:56Speaker 2: trying to do just show off your new digs or yeah,
- 44:59Speaker 2: that's what trying to get people in. This is where
- 45:01Speaker 2: you're gonna come and learn.
- 45:02Speaker 14: Yes, yes, So what we've done is we had schools
- 45:05Speaker 14: come through Nitro High School, had some folks come in
- 45:07Speaker 14: West Virginia, Women's Works, we have some of the youth
- 45:10Speaker 14: build programs that come through. You know a lot of
- 45:12Speaker 14: local politicians were there. Yeah, just to show off. You
- 45:15Speaker 14: know what we actually can do, you know, show the
- 45:17Speaker 14: facility and the kind of train that we do there.
- 45:20Speaker 2: What does someone need to do? And by the way,
- 45:22Speaker 2: I was still canvassing. We were still canvassing votes yesterday,
- 45:27Speaker 2: long long ballot or I would have been there pounding
- 45:31Speaker 2: and nail. Where does someone start, like, Okay, what if
- 45:36Speaker 2: they didn't make it to the open house yesterday or
- 45:39Speaker 2: weren't you know, didn't have that natural rate that's not
- 45:45Speaker 2: really the right word, but that you know, going from
- 45:47Speaker 2: high school to this or going from community and technical
- 45:50Speaker 2: college to going in.
- 45:52Speaker 14: So what we do We reach out to a lot
- 45:54Speaker 14: of the high school programs. We'll go visit and talk
- 45:57Speaker 14: to them. Ye what they do is they apply online,
- 46:00Speaker 14: We'll bring them in. Well, we'll give them an information
- 46:02Speaker 14: session interview. The information session talks about all the things
- 46:06Speaker 14: that comes along within a printice. So you know what
- 46:08Speaker 14: to expect coming to our program. You know, the travel,
- 46:12Speaker 14: you know the work, how how all that goes. So
- 46:14Speaker 14: people can make educated decisions on if we're the right
- 46:16Speaker 14: fit for them and and and the same for them
- 46:19Speaker 14: for us. But they'll go through an interview process. You know,
- 46:23Speaker 14: we have a few activities we have them to do
- 46:25Speaker 14: just to show that they're physically capable of doing the
- 46:28Speaker 14: work and make sure that they understand, you know, what
- 46:30Speaker 14: they're signing up for, right. So yeah, so we bring
- 46:33Speaker 14: them in that way. We we do interviews based off
- 46:37Speaker 14: of the workload in the in the local area.
- 46:40Speaker 2: So well, I mean to think about it here, I
- 46:42Speaker 2: am trying to get the whole eastern part of Kanawha
- 46:45Speaker 2: County built up with lodging, whether it's Airbnb, whether someone
- 46:51Speaker 2: has you know, other ideas an RV park or anything
- 46:55Speaker 2: like that. And these are the kind of people that
- 46:57Speaker 2: we need. I mean, people tell me all the time,
- 46:59Speaker 2: you know, good handyman, but this goes beyond a handyman,
- 47:03Speaker 2: doesn't it. And when you have a skill like this,
- 47:07Speaker 2: I mean, you're getting the job done right, not just
- 47:11Speaker 2: throwing a car. I can, I can put up drywall.
- 47:13Speaker 2: I'm not sure you know what it's going to end
- 47:16Speaker 2: up being, and I know all the process of all that,
- 47:19Speaker 2: but a skilled worker makes a difference.
- 47:22Speaker 14: It does make a difference. You get the job done
- 47:24Speaker 14: right the first time. So it's it's great for the contractors,
- 47:28Speaker 14: the end users. I mean, so we got to make
- 47:31Speaker 14: sure that our workforce has trained well, and that's where
- 47:34Speaker 14: that's what we do, is we'll bring them in. You know,
- 47:37Speaker 14: in the carpenter's side, we we train on about thirty
- 47:40Speaker 14: different aspects of carpentry, whether it be interior systems, building, scaffoling, uh,
- 47:46Speaker 14: you know, welding. It's crazy, I mean the amount of
- 47:49Speaker 14: work that we do.
- 47:51Speaker 2: And so when when someone comes in, do you drug
- 47:55Speaker 2: test them right then? Or I know you drug test
- 47:58Speaker 2: throughout right, explain that.
- 47:59Speaker 14: They have to pass the drug test to get into
- 48:01Speaker 14: our program. That's that's probably one of the the main
- 48:05Speaker 14: conditions you be able to pass the drug test.
- 48:07Speaker 8: Uh, you don't.
- 48:08Speaker 14: You can't send people out into the field. You know
- 48:10Speaker 14: that are are intoxicated. You know they're going to hurt
- 48:13Speaker 14: theirselves or someone else. So, yes, drug testing is very
- 48:16Speaker 14: important to us for sure. You know, they get drug
- 48:20Speaker 14: tested throughout our program. Uh, A lot of contractors when
- 48:23Speaker 14: they go to a job, they're drug tested. So that
- 48:26Speaker 14: that is a very very important thing to stay drug free.
- 48:29Speaker 2: Well. And also the way I understand it, make sure
- 48:32Speaker 2: I'm correct that you know, if somebody gets tripped up.
- 48:36Speaker 2: The thing is you could be working and and get
- 48:38Speaker 2: a back injury, and then you're you're prescribed hydrocodone or OxyContin. Yeah, OxyContin,
- 48:47Speaker 2: some of those drugs, and those are the ones that
- 48:49Speaker 2: you can that's what you can become addicted to. And
- 48:52Speaker 2: it wasn't at not any real fault of your own.
- 48:55Speaker 2: That's not really fair to say. But it was just
- 48:57Speaker 2: an injury.
- 48:57Speaker 8: It was an injury, and and and and.
- 48:59Speaker 2: It keeps getting But the apprenticeship in the Union, the
- 49:02Speaker 2: Carpenter's Union is there to help you get back on
- 49:06Speaker 2: the right track.
- 49:06Speaker 14: Absolutely first and foremost. We want to make sure that
- 49:10Speaker 14: our members are safe and healthy, right, you know that
- 49:12Speaker 14: that is very important to us. And you know we
