- 0:00Welcome to "the Hoover Daily Report". Ideas Advancing
- 0:04Freedom. It's Wednesday, May 13th, twenty twenty six .
- 0:07Today, the Hoover Institution congratulates Kevin Warsh on his
- 0:10confirmation to serve as the next chairman of the Board of Governors of the
- 0:14Federal Reserve System; Andrew Hall examines the likely political
- 0:17implications of AI-driven job displacement; and H.R. McMaster speaks
- 0:21with a human rights advocate about the dire humanitarian situation in Cuba and
- 0:25the prospects for a change in governance that
- 0:27could improve conditions for the Cuban people.
- 0:29Hoover Institution Congratulates Kevin Warsh on Confirmation as Federal Reserve
- 0:34Chair.
- 0:35The Hoover Institution congratulates Kevin Warsh, the Shepard Family
- 0:39Distinguished Visiting Fellow in Economics at Hoover, on his confirmation
- 0:43by the US Senate to serve as chairman of the Board of Governors of the Federal
- 0:48Reserve System. "I have known Kevin for most of his adult life. I first met him
- 0:53as a student in my international politics class at Stanford University, and it was
- 0:58clear even then that he was exceptional,”
- 1:00said former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, Tad and Dianne Taube
- 1:04Director of the Hoover Institution.
- 1:06“Kevin is uniquely suited to lead the Federal Reserve at this moment. He is
- 1:11battle-tested, principled, and brings the breadth of judgment this role demands.
- 1:16Just as important, he understands how deeply international relations and
- 1:21monetary policy are intertwined—a reality that will only grow more consequential in
- 1:26the years ahead. He is the right person at the right time. On behalf of his
- 1:31friends and colleagues at the Hoover Institution, we wish him well." In a
- 1:36bipartisan vote on Wednesday, the US Senate confirmed Warsh, who will become
- 1:41the Fed’s 17th chair when he is sworn in.
- 1:44The Politics of Jobless Prosperity.
- 1:46In a major new essay for the Free Systems Substack, Senior Fellow Andrew B. Hall
- 1:50considers the political implications of an artificial intelligence–driven
- 1:54economic shock. Hall says this future has not yet arrived, and is difficult to
- 1:59forecast, but will likely feature rapid economic growth “even as jobs disappear,”
- 2:03making the situation “more like the Industrial Revolution or the China Shock
- 2:07than a normal recession, with mass disruption alongside the explosive
- 2:11enrichment of a small class of elites at the top.” Hall predicts that backlash
- 2:16will arrive when unemployment climbs by 2 percentage points alongside a clear
- 2:20public narrative blaming AI. Hall also makes the case that frontier AI labs
- 2:24can’t preempt the political backlash through the implementation of their own
- 2:28social contracts, however ambitious in scope or clever in design. “Social
- 2:32contracts tend to get extracted from the powerful by the affected,” Hall writes,
- 2:37“not handed down from above to a public that has not yet decided what it wants.”.
- 2:41Cuba at a Crossroads: Crisis and the Long Struggle for Liberty.
- 2:45For the latest episode of Today’s Battlegrounds, Rosa María Payá, founder
- 2:50of Cuba Decide and a commissioner on the Inter-American Commission on Human
- 2:55Rights, speaks with Senior Fellow H.R. McMaster about US-Cuba relations, Cuba’s
- 3:00deepening economic and humanitarian crisis, its internal challenges of
- 3:05governance and repression, and prospects for a more peaceful and secure future for
- 3:10the Cuban people. Reflecting on the current crisis in Cuba, Payá and McMaster
- 3:15discuss worsening humanitarian conditions, including blackouts, food and
- 3:20medicine shortages, and mass emigration. They examine the legacy of Payá’s father,
- 3:25Oswaldo Payá, and democratic opposition movements such as
- 3:29the Varela Project;
- 3:30the Cuban regime’s use of repression and surveillance to maintain power; and the
- 3:35role of young Cubans demanding political change. The conversation also explores US
- 3:39policy toward Cuba; the effects of sanctions and international pressure;
- 3:43Cuba’s relationships with authoritarian regimes including Venezuela, Russia,
- 3:47China, and Iran; and the conditions Payá argues are vital for a democratic
- 3:51transition in Cuba.
- 3:52Will Trump Betray Taiwan?
- 3:54Writing for Project Syndicate, Hoover Fellow Eyck Freymann considers how Taiwan
- 3:59will figure in this week’s Beijing summit between US President Donald Trump and
- 4:03Chinese President Xi Jinping. Freymann argues that in the decades ahead, China’s
- 4:07leadership is likely to increase “gray-zone activity”—below the threshold
- 4:12of armed conflict but detrimental to Taiwan’s independence. He notes that in
- 4:16Xi Jinping, “Trump will be facing a patient, perceptive, and ambitious
- 4:20leader.” The best way to signal American resolve on Taiwan and to deter a crisis,
- 4:24Freymann says, “is to ensure Xi never receives the signal that patience is no
- 4:28longer required—and that Taiwan never doubts who its friends are.”.
- 4:32Hoover Hosts Mexican Scholars to Reinvigorate Continental Trade and
- 4:36Security Ties.
- 4:37The US and Mexico can strengthen ties by deepening automotive supply chains and
- 4:43developing shared energy infrastructure, but better dialogue between both
- 4:48governments and coordination in security issues may be necessary to advance with
- 4:54further integration, speakers said at a Hoover Institution conference. The April
- 4:5920 gathering was made possible by Hoover’s Program on the Foundations of
- 5:04Economic Prosperity, which together with Instituto Tecnológico Autónomo de México
- 5:10(ITAM) has formed the Mexico-USA Prosperity and Security Initiative.
- 5:14Annual US-Mexico trade totals roughly $850 billion, with about 80 percent of
- 5:20Mexican exports going to the United States. Participants argued that
- 5:25bilateral trade has delivered tangible gains over the past several decades, even
- 5:30as disputes have persisted in some areas.
