- 0:00Speaker 1: Back with coach Mora here on the Yukon Football Coaches Show.
- 0:03Speaker 1: We've got some basketball for you. On Wednesday, the guys
- 0:06Speaker 1: are at the Maui Invitational and I'm doing the show
- 0:08Speaker 1: for the Bahamas with the Yukon Women. They take on
- 0:10Speaker 1: Old Miss tomorrow night, seven o'clock on the pregame here
- 0:14Speaker 1: on the Yukon Sports Network, the Varsity Network app, and
- 0:17Speaker 1: the Varsitynetwork dot com. Speaking of Gino, I know you
- 0:20Speaker 1: spoke eloquently of him last week at your press conference.
- 0:25Speaker 1: He had a rant. I don't know if i'd call
- 0:26Speaker 1: it a rant, but somebody asked him back in twenty
- 0:29Speaker 1: sixteen at the Final Four about player engagement and body
- 0:33Speaker 1: language and you can see this video on YouTube. And
- 0:36Speaker 1: I bring this up because Victor Rose's role has changed
- 0:39Speaker 1: significantly this year because of nagging injuries not only in
- 0:43Speaker 1: the preseason but early in the season, but then the
- 0:45Speaker 1: other three guys having really good years at the running
- 0:48Speaker 1: back position. It's a change. I know it might be
- 0:51Speaker 1: tough for him, but you see him every day in practice.
- 0:53Speaker 1: How has he handled this new role on the football team.
- 0:58Speaker 2: Well, it's been really hard on him. Victor's prideful guy
- 1:01Speaker 2: and wants to contribute, and uh, you know, just its
- 1:06Speaker 2: been one of those years. We're just he's nagging. Injuries,
- 1:09Speaker 2: as you said, have kind of held him back. But
- 1:11Speaker 2: you know, Victor's red shirt in this year, so uh,
- 1:14Speaker 2: he's going to get this year back. You know, he
- 1:16Speaker 2: played in his fourth game on Saturday against Syracuse and uh,
- 1:21Speaker 2: so he's preserved his eligibility. We won't play him this week.
- 1:24Speaker 2: He's preserved his eligibility going forward, which is something he
- 1:27Speaker 2: and I talked about. You know, early in the season
- 1:30Speaker 2: we started having these injuries. So uh, it's always been
- 1:34Speaker 2: the it's been the plan since early in the season
- 1:36Speaker 2: when he was you know, dinged up with the hamstring
- 1:38Speaker 2: and then you know, having the surgery on his finger,
- 1:42Speaker 2: that that he would red shirt.
- 1:44Speaker 1: Okay, just a clarification here, Could he play in the ballgame?
- 1:47Speaker 1: Does that affect the red shirt at all?
- 1:50Speaker 2: As far as I know right now, he could. I
- 1:53Speaker 2: believe the rule in place right now is if you
- 1:56Speaker 2: make a ball game and you've played in four games,
- 1:57Speaker 2: you can play in the ball game and still made teen,
- 2:00Speaker 2: you red shirt eligibility. But I'm not sure if that'll
- 2:03Speaker 2: be the case once we get there. You know, the
- 2:05Speaker 2: rules in college football change pretty fast, so as far
- 2:08Speaker 2: as I know right now, yes, which would be fantastic
- 2:10Speaker 2: for him.
- 2:11Speaker 1: Jim, are there any young guys that you would consider
- 2:14Speaker 1: even giving them a chance to play if if the
- 2:17Speaker 1: opportunity arose on Saturday that have put in some hard
- 2:20Speaker 1: work this season or you're just basically sticking with your
- 2:23Speaker 1: core group right now.
- 2:25Speaker 2: Yeah, we're set. I'm not gonna know. I mean, listen,
- 2:31Speaker 2: we just want to win the football game. We ever
- 2:34Speaker 2: to win the football game, this football game. We're not
- 2:36Speaker 2: thinking down the road. I'm not thinking about the ball.
- 2:38Speaker 2: I'm not thinking about next year. I'm not thinking about
- 2:39Speaker 2: spring ball. I'm not thinking about you know what young
- 2:44Speaker 2: guys are going to help us next year. I mean
- 2:46Speaker 2: that all sort of self out worried about right now
- 2:48Speaker 2: is how do we play the best football we can
- 2:50Speaker 2: on Saturday and put ourselves in position to get a win.
- 2:54Speaker 1: Okay, defense, let's go over there for a moment here.
- 2:57Speaker 1: The linebacker spot. Jaden McDonald's been fantastic, the outstanding maturity
- 3:02Speaker 1: of two for me to Brown's been good, and Lengthston
- 3:05Speaker 1: hardy is Is that position better than you thought it
- 3:07Speaker 1: would be at the beginning of the year. I don't
- 3:09Speaker 1: know what your expectations were at the linebacker spot.
- 3:13Speaker 2: Well, length is not really a linebackers, it's a hybrid position, right, Okay,
- 3:21Speaker 2: So our linebackers are two and Jaden and there. I
- 3:27Speaker 2: knew they were both really good players going into the year,
- 3:29Speaker 2: and they've proven to be so they've been consistent. I
- 3:32Speaker 2: think one of the things that's so impressive about Jaden
- 3:34Speaker 2: is that you know, and you know this, but I'm
- 3:36Speaker 2: not sure everyone listening knows, is he's playing with the
- 3:38Speaker 2: torn rotator cuff. He tore his rotator cuff and a
- 3:41Speaker 2: scrimmage during fall camp, and it's something that you know,
- 3:46Speaker 2: everyone recommended he surgically gets surgically repaired, and that he
- 3:50Speaker 2: would have missed the year and his college eligibility would
- 3:52Speaker 2: have run out, and he decided to just strap it
- 3:54Speaker 2: up and play. And that's incredibly, incredibly impressive to me
- 4:00Speaker 2: that this means so much to him that he's willing
- 4:03Speaker 2: to go through the pain that he goes through every
- 4:05Speaker 2: single time he strikes somebody to play this game for
- 4:09Speaker 2: this team. And I love him for that, and too
- 4:13Speaker 2: he you know, we've seen his growth year after year
- 4:16Speaker 2: after year after year. He just keeps getting better and
- 4:18Speaker 2: better and better. So we are really lucky to have
- 4:20Speaker 2: those two guys. We play a couple guys behind them
- 4:23Speaker 2: in spot roles that that have helped us. And then
- 4:26Speaker 2: you know you mentioned you mentioned Langston. He you see
- 4:30Speaker 2: him drop a little bit, but he's really It's like
- 4:32Speaker 2: I said, it's kind of a specialty positioned. We don't
- 4:34Speaker 2: consider it a linebacker. We don't really consider a D lineman.
- 4:37Speaker 2: It probably leans a little bit more towards D line
- 4:39Speaker 2: than linebacker. So but I listen talking about Langston, I
- 4:45Speaker 2: think he's become a heck of a football player. You know,
- 4:47Speaker 2: whatever he's doing, whatever position you want to call it, linebacker,
- 4:50Speaker 2: D line, football player, Langston Hardy is a good football player.
- 4:54Speaker 2: It's been fun to watch him, watch him stay healthy.
- 4:57Speaker 1: And I know from from being here recording your coaches
- 4:59Speaker 1: shows with Mike, I know you were high on Cam
- 5:01Speaker 1: Chadwick early in the season. And Ronte was the other
- 5:04Speaker 1: pregame guest last week and Adam asked him about him,
- 5:07Speaker 1: and Ronte thinks that that Cam is the next good
- 5:11Speaker 1: one here. He loves the way he plays. And I'm
- 5:13Speaker 1: sure you can echo that sentiment.
- 5:16Speaker 2: Oh, I think he's I think he's going to be
- 5:18Speaker 2: a really good football player. He's just got to keep
- 5:20Speaker 2: getting reps. He's very competitive, he's got good size, he's
- 5:24Speaker 2: very athletic, plays the ball well in the air, has confidence.
- 5:28Speaker 2: It's just a matter of him continuing to get, you know,
- 5:31Speaker 2: game reps, and getting better in that way, and getting
- 5:34Speaker 2: challenged and rising up and learning from his mistakes and
- 5:38Speaker 2: learning from his successes. But yeah, we really like Cam.
- 5:41Speaker 2: I think he's a good football player. I've really enjoyed
- 5:44Speaker 2: watching him this work this year. He's just a great kid, tremendous,
- 5:48Speaker 2: tremendous young man.
- 5:50Speaker 1: Jim, Is there a player or two, or maybe a
- 5:52Speaker 1: handful that have really taken a big, big step from
- 5:57Speaker 1: say preseason to now, maybe even beyond your expectation.
- 6:01Speaker 2: Well, we just talked about Cam. He'd be one. I
- 6:06Speaker 2: mean I think that, you know, I didn't know what
- 6:11Speaker 2: we had in those running backs other than Cam Carston Cassidy.
- 6:17Speaker 2: You know, I think he's a guy that's taken a
- 6:19Speaker 2: big step up. He hadn't started a lot, but when
- 6:21Speaker 2: he's had to go in there and play, he's done
- 6:22Speaker 2: a really good job. You know, I don't know, I
- 6:27Speaker 2: don't know I mean I see progress out of all
- 6:30Speaker 2: of them every single day. You know, at Langston, Donovan Branch,
- 6:36Speaker 2: you know, you know, even guys that you know, Matt Hoffman,
- 6:40Speaker 2: who we don't see a lot. There's a lot of
- 6:42Speaker 2: guys that are doing things behind the scenes that you
- 6:44Speaker 2: know haven't necessarily showed up on game day yet. But
- 6:46Speaker 2: the improvement they make on a daily basis just the
- 6:48Speaker 2: testament the way they work and how much they care.
- 6:51Speaker 1: Yeah, Branch of the big fourth down tackle by the way,
- 6:53Speaker 1: in the third quarter in the game against Syracuse on Saturday.
- 6:57Speaker 1: Final segment with Jim will preview you maass and maybe
- 7:00Speaker 1: getting a little game day prep when we continue here
- 7:03Speaker 1: on the Yukon Football Coaches Show from lear Field.
- 7:05Speaker 2: Stay with us
