- 0:06Speaker 1: Welcome into Northside Territory. Foul Territory Networks Cubs Podcast. I'm
- 0:09Speaker 1: Sahadev Sharma with my partner Patrick Mooney. We are your
- 0:12Speaker 1: Cubs beat writers over at the Athletic Patrick. It may
- 0:16Speaker 1: be the middle of May, but the fans are asking
- 0:21Speaker 1: for it. Everyone wants to know when the Cubs are
- 0:25Speaker 1: going to make a big move. We're not saying this
- 0:29Speaker 1: is happening soon, but it is. It is worth talking
- 0:32Speaker 1: about because the Cubs are good. Even if they're in
- 0:36Speaker 1: a little mini slump here, there's still one of the
- 0:38Speaker 1: They still have one of the best records in baseball.
- 0:40Speaker 1: That's what happens when you have two ten game winning streaks.
- 0:43Speaker 1: You set yourself up nicely to have a winning record
- 0:46Speaker 1: and a playoff caliber team, a shot at the playoffs
- 0:50Speaker 1: right here, this is a team built to win now.
- 0:52Speaker 1: They are going to be buying at the deadline unless
- 0:55Speaker 1: something really weird happens over the next couple months. So
- 0:58Speaker 1: it's worth talking about it. We've we've talked a lot
- 1:01Speaker 1: about the targets. We know they're going to go after pitching.
- 1:04Speaker 1: That seems like the pretty obvious obvious situation, but who
- 1:09Speaker 1: is available this system isn't awesome. I also don't think
- 1:13Speaker 1: it is terrible to the point where you have to
- 1:16Speaker 1: worry about, oh, they can't get anyone. There are there
- 1:20Speaker 1: are players that you can move. There are players that
- 1:25Speaker 1: other teams, other organizations are going to see as valuable,
- 1:29Speaker 1: and and you know that they they can put together
- 1:33Speaker 1: package to get good players. How good I think that's
- 1:38Speaker 1: what we'll need to figure out over the next couple
- 1:40Speaker 1: of months, and we probably won't really know until July.
- 1:45Speaker 1: But there this this isn't a barren farm system. It's
- 1:51Speaker 1: it's not as good as they want it to be,
- 1:53Speaker 1: but it's not it's not going to keep them from
- 1:55Speaker 1: improving the team.
- 1:58Speaker 2: Yeah, it's obviously light on pitching prospects. The best one,
- 2:03Speaker 2: or most well known one, Jackson Wiggins, has been sidelined
- 2:09Speaker 2: for a while and won't be rushed back into action.
- 2:12Speaker 2: He's got for a young prospect, a young professional, rather
- 2:17Speaker 2: extensive injury history going back to his time at Arkansas.
- 2:22Speaker 2: But you're right, like, okay, if a team is not
- 2:27Speaker 2: totally committed to backfilling a pitching spot because they just
- 2:29Speaker 2: traded a pitcher, like the Cubs do have a lot
- 2:34Speaker 2: of interesting hitters that they have positioned players they can
- 2:39Speaker 2: market and.
- 2:41Speaker 1: Go back to you.
- 2:43Speaker 2: When theo Epstein and Jed Hoyer took over in Chicago,
- 2:46Speaker 2: they viewed certain types of hitters as the safest investments possible.
- 2:51Speaker 2: And I think, you know, we'll get into some of
- 2:55Speaker 2: the other roster ramifications in the next segment, but like
- 3:01Speaker 2: they've got guys a Triple A Iowa who are maybe
- 3:04Speaker 2: not plug and play for contending teams, but for rebuilding
- 3:09Speaker 2: teams that have spots open.
- 3:11Speaker 1: There are several names.
- 3:12Speaker 2: That I think would intrigue teams that you know, if
- 3:15Speaker 2: they could give him some sort of runway here.
- 3:18Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean, we know Kevin ocontra is. You know,
- 3:23Speaker 1: he's had some major league at bats, He's he's played
- 3:26Speaker 1: in the big leagues, not extensively, but this is a
- 3:29Speaker 1: guy that can handle center field. Not only handle centerfield.
- 3:32Speaker 1: Some people think he's a pretty damn good defender out there.
- 3:36Speaker 1: Obviously he's not going to get a lot of burn
- 3:38Speaker 1: in centerfield with the Cubs, but this is more than
- 3:43Speaker 1: capable defender in centerfield who is really tapping into his power.
- 3:48Speaker 1: There's extreme swinging myths right now. He likes to chase
- 3:51Speaker 1: breaking balls. He is a flawed prospect, most are, but
- 3:57Speaker 1: there's a ton of power, good defense, speed, things like that.
- 4:02Speaker 1: Very intriguing player Pedro Ramirez. We heard about him in
- 4:08Speaker 1: spring training, both of us. I think everybody every like.
- 4:11Speaker 1: I don't think if you were around spring training you
- 4:13Speaker 1: heard about Padromrirez, not just as a player, but as
- 4:17Speaker 1: as a person. It seems like he really like this
- 4:20Speaker 1: is We've heard a lot about this group in general,
- 4:23Speaker 1: the Cubs, this clubhouse. They're hard workers, they're smart ball players,
- 4:28Speaker 1: they like to do their homework, they like to talk
- 4:29Speaker 1: about hitting. Ramirez is kind of like it seemed to
- 4:33Speaker 1: fit in really well, Like seemed to fit in with
- 4:36Speaker 1: this group, got a lot of praise from the veterans,
- 4:39Speaker 1: and now he's gone out there and had a pretty
- 4:41Speaker 1: damn good start to his minor league season. This is
- 4:44Speaker 1: a guy that I don't think he'd hit very many
- 4:47Speaker 1: home runs in general, like had zero pop. And in fact,
- 4:50Speaker 1: I was talking to someone in spring training and kind
- 4:53Speaker 1: of saying, like, so this is he's kind of like
- 4:55Speaker 1: a great defender who can kind of, you know, see
- 4:59Speaker 1: him as like maybe a starter who's not gonna will
- 5:02Speaker 1: make a ton of contact with no pop. He's like
- 5:04Speaker 1: I think you're wrong on that. He's like, I think
- 5:06Speaker 1: that was probably what we saw last year. But I
- 5:11Speaker 1: think we've made some changes where he's made some changes
- 5:14Speaker 1: that that have you know, very slight changes that can
- 5:17Speaker 1: help him tap into his power. That seems to be right,
- 5:20Speaker 1: he looks really good. Then there's other you know, when
- 5:24Speaker 1: you talk about triple A like Jonathan Long, James Treanto's
- 5:29Speaker 1: these aren't headliners of a trade, but they're they're pieces
- 5:34Speaker 1: and even pitching wise, I mean, I don't think there's
- 5:37Speaker 1: like I wouldn't say Jackson Wiggins is untouchable, but also like,
- 5:40Speaker 1: do you trade a guy when he's when he's hurt. No,
- 5:44Speaker 1: probably not, like that's low value. But there's some there's
- 5:47Speaker 1: some names out there, Grant, Kip Brooks, Capel, Dominic Reid.
- 5:52Speaker 1: These are all players that have had solid starts of
- 5:55Speaker 1: the season. We'll see where the Cubs value them and
- 5:58Speaker 1: where other teams value them. Probably Jefferson Rojas another name,
- 6:03Speaker 1: former top one hundred prospect, solid prospect is he is
- 6:08Speaker 1: he expendable? I'd say the most intriguing prospect, one of
- 6:12Speaker 1: the most intriguing prospects in their system is Josiah Hartshorn.
- 6:16Speaker 1: I go back and forth on that. That's like, do
- 6:19Speaker 1: you trade a guy when he's about to blow up
- 6:23Speaker 1: onto the scene? Is his value high right now? Is
- 6:27Speaker 1: it at its highest? Those are the things I think
- 6:29Speaker 1: the Cubs need to figure out.
- 6:32Speaker 2: Yeah, I think some of these starts to as I
- 6:35Speaker 2: was reminded recently, Yeah, the minor league schedule. What is
- 6:40Speaker 2: it like basically play six games in a row against
- 6:44Speaker 2: one team? So like, are you facing the best team
- 6:49Speaker 2: the worst team? Like, do you have kind of a
- 6:51Speaker 2: bad draw or a good draw? That's kind of another
- 6:55Speaker 2: layer to what is already kind of a small sample.
- 6:59Speaker 1: I'm with you.
- 6:59Speaker 2: I think Hartshorn is kind of a name that is
- 7:02Speaker 2: starting to pop now. Obviously, he got two million dollars
- 7:05Speaker 2: as a six round pick last year out of high school,
- 7:08Speaker 2: so certainly teams were on him. But I think the
- 7:11Speaker 2: Cubs are anticipating him to be sort of a buzzy name. Obviously,
- 7:15Speaker 2: Jefferson Rojas is that sort of classic Cubs up the
- 7:22Speaker 2: middle prospect who from a very young age, has made
- 7:28Speaker 2: a very strong impression. He, like Ramirez, will be facing
- 7:35Speaker 2: an in field that will be very difficult to break
- 7:38Speaker 2: into over the next several years, given their long term
- 7:41Speaker 2: commitments to a Nica Horner, Dancy Swanson, and Alex Bregman.
- 7:47Speaker 2: I thought it was interesting that Ramirez is starting to
- 7:51Speaker 2: play left field as well, and we'll see where that goes.
- 7:56Speaker 1: I thought.
- 7:57Speaker 2: Craig Council when asked about Ramirez recently, he had just
- 8:02Speaker 2: one International League Player of the Month for April, and
- 8:07Speaker 2: he was asked, you would you hesitate if the front
- 8:10Speaker 2: office came to you and said we need another player?
- 8:12Speaker 2: What do you think Mraz and come said I would.
- 8:14Speaker 2: I've been fine with him breaking camp out of spring training.
- 8:18Speaker 2: And he called him the player that other players were
- 8:22Speaker 2: talking about in Mesa, that there's usually one of those
- 8:26Speaker 2: guys every year. That was Ramirez, and that momentum has
- 8:30Speaker 2: clearly carried over into just an unbelievable start that's probably
- 8:35Speaker 2: even surpassing his expectations. Like that, you can be high
- 8:39Speaker 2: on a player and realize, all right, he's a switch hitter,
- 8:41Speaker 2: he's a gold glove defender. You can move him around
- 8:45Speaker 2: nice piece, but offensively he's taken a step forward that
- 8:50Speaker 2: you know, we get it.
- 8:52Speaker 1: It's tripa a pitching.
- 8:53Speaker 2: It's different than the majors, but like he's doing, you know,
- 8:57Speaker 2: everything that they could have possibly wanted to try and
- 9:00Speaker 2: maybe not force the issue, but you know, really be
- 9:03Speaker 2: ready when you're one phone call away.
- 9:06Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean, I don't think anybody's untouchable. Nobody should
- 9:11Speaker 1: be untouchable, but a guy like Ramirez, when you hear
- 9:14Speaker 1: such good things, it does make you wonder. It's like, Okay,
- 9:16Speaker 1: do they kind of see him as part of their
- 9:18Speaker 1: plans when they start playing him in left field? Are
- 9:21Speaker 1: they trying to set them up for a future with
- 9:24Speaker 1: this team when when you're losing, when you're potentially losing
- 9:27Speaker 1: to corner outfielders, we'll see. You know, if a team
- 9:31Speaker 1: won't budge off paid Ramirez and it's to get let's
- 9:37Speaker 1: throughout a name Joe Ryan, maybe you do it. You know,
- 9:41Speaker 1: you can't be clinging to prospects if it's to get
- 9:46Speaker 1: a player that can really move the needle now and
- 9:48Speaker 1: in the future. But they need to be that. They
- 9:51Speaker 1: do need to be smart. They shouldn't just be giving
- 9:53Speaker 1: away talent in the system. You know, this isn't as
- 9:59Speaker 1: much a this is just like kind of like a
- 10:02Speaker 1: look back at what they did last year. When you
- 10:05Speaker 1: give up Ronnie Cruz and he blows up in the
- 10:07Speaker 1: farm system of the Nationals and Michael Soroka doesn't help
- 10:12Speaker 1: that that combination. You look back and you're like, that's rough.
- 10:15Speaker 1: You know, you give up Zyro Hope and Jackson Ferris,
- 10:17Speaker 1: but you're getting Michael Bush. That's different. You can live
- 10:21Speaker 1: with that. So you have to be really smart and
- 10:23Speaker 1: like kind of understand, like really be diligent about what
- 10:26Speaker 1: are we giving up and what are we getting and
- 10:28Speaker 1: not saying they're not doing that. Of course they're doing that.
- 10:31Speaker 1: It's just this is the process that you have When
- 10:33Speaker 1: you look back at these trades, it's less about like
- 10:36Speaker 1: how much did you give up? Well, do you get
- 10:37Speaker 1: anything in return? As well, like what was the process
- 10:40Speaker 1: of getting those players that you got in return and
- 10:44Speaker 1: was that effective? To that help you because you can't
- 10:46Speaker 1: always dwell on what you gave up, otherwise you'll never
- 10:49Speaker 1: really make the move. All right, Let's take a quick
- 10:53Speaker 1: break and come back and talk about a couple of
- 10:55Speaker 1: names that we keep getting questions about about whether they're
- 10:58Speaker 1: available or not.

- 11:18Speaker 4: Gotta be a little higher out of the sun. I'm
- 11:21Speaker 4: bougie that way.
- 11:22Speaker 1: Of course you are.

- 12:04Speaker 1: All right, Patrick, a couple of names that we keep
- 12:08Speaker 1: hearing from emailers on Twitter that people want to know,
- 12:13Speaker 1: are they Is there any chance that they're available? Moyses
- 12:18Speaker 1: Biasteros and Matt Shaw. Before we get to them, let's
- 12:22Speaker 1: make this our This is our Daily Dingers presented by
- 12:26Speaker 1: Fan dual segment. All right, Patrick, are they available? That's
- 12:36Speaker 1: I mean I would say, like off the top, like no, there.
- 12:43Speaker 1: I don't think the Cubs are shopping these guys, but
- 12:47Speaker 1: do do you listen? Is there a deal that could
- 12:51Speaker 1: that could make sense? They love Moys's Biasteris. There's a
- 12:56Speaker 1: reason he was given the run way to win that
- 12:59Speaker 1: d H job there was. They think very highly of
- 13:04Speaker 1: his bat, his defense. We know the issues there. He's
- 13:09Speaker 1: not a you know, he's not a full time catcher,
- 13:11Speaker 1: but he they they are He's gotten to a point
- 13:14Speaker 1: where they feel like they can use him on occasion
- 13:17Speaker 1: behind the plate. Matt Shaw, I think is an intriguing
- 13:22Speaker 1: topic right now. He's a super utility guy. He's doing
- 13:27Speaker 1: really well in that role. But does another team I
- 13:31Speaker 1: think the question for me becomes, does another team see
- 13:35Speaker 1: him as so valuable, more valuable than what the Cubs
- 13:38Speaker 1: are getting from him right now? If that makes sense?
- 13:41Speaker 1: Because you talked about the last segment. Their their infields
- 13:45Speaker 1: locked in. That's where Matt Shaw is probably most valuable
- 13:49Speaker 1: at third base, second base, that's where his value would
- 13:52Speaker 1: be seen. The Cubs just don't have a spot for him.
- 13:55Speaker 1: So does another team say, look, we value him so much,
- 14:00Speaker 1: this is what will give up for him. I think
- 14:02Speaker 1: that is the debate there.
- 14:07Speaker 2: Yeah, I think we have to come out of this.
- 14:10Speaker 2: Like anytime you're wondering would they trade that guy? Of
- 14:12Speaker 2: course they would, Like there's obviously they've they've started handing
- 14:18Speaker 2: out no trade clauses like pieces of gum. So I
- 14:21Speaker 2: guess I will take those players off the table. But
- 14:24Speaker 2: in terms of these younger guys, like, yeah, they're certainly
- 14:28Speaker 2: willing to listen, and they're, uh, you're more than happy
- 14:32Speaker 2: to you know, run the projections through their IVY systems
- 14:37Speaker 2: and to see what, you know, numbers that spits out.
- 14:45Speaker 2: You know, we're gonna spend a lot of time talking
- 14:47Speaker 2: about the trade deadline, and we're gonna feel a little
- 14:52Speaker 2: silly if it's another show about nothing, Like if we
- 14:55Speaker 2: spend months doing this and the Cubs get like a
- 14:58Speaker 2: seventh inning reliever and like a back of a rotation starter.
- 15:05Speaker 2: Because I do think that tension is going to surface
- 15:10Speaker 2: again of like, do we go all in for this year?
- 15:14Speaker 2: What about all of these future Cubs teams? What is
- 15:18Speaker 2: the sort of business model at Wrigley Field. I mean,
- 15:21Speaker 2: ownership wants a competitive team on an annual basis. But
- 15:28Speaker 2: then again, every season's supposed to be sacred, and the
- 15:30Speaker 2: Cubs already look like they have a legit shot to
- 15:35Speaker 2: get to a World Series, and you know, the American
- 15:38Speaker 2: League as a whole sort of looks down. We've had
- 15:41Speaker 2: some teams in the National League that were supposed to
- 15:43Speaker 2: be pretty good or very interesting sort of fall in
- 15:46Speaker 2: their face at the start of the year. So at
- 15:49Speaker 2: the start of the race. So I still don't think
- 15:55Speaker 2: Jed Hoyer is someone who wants to deal from his
- 15:59Speaker 2: MA Ajor League roster. That he is just so paranoid
- 16:02Speaker 2: about injuries and obsessed with depth that and they put
- 16:08Speaker 2: such a high value on Matt Shaw, and there's so
- 16:13Speaker 2: many potential holes after this season in terms of free
- 16:16Speaker 2: agents who are able to walk away that I think
- 16:20Speaker 2: both of those guys shown by a stereos are still
- 16:23Speaker 2: Cubs on April fourth. But it's a totally valid question
- 16:27Speaker 2: to ask, because you know, other teams are going to
- 16:29Speaker 2: be asking in the Cubs will be considering, like do
- 16:32Speaker 2: they have to do something like that in order to.
- 16:35Speaker 1: Get that piece? Yeah, I think you said April fourth.
- 16:38Speaker 1: You meant August fourth, right, fourth? Yeah, Yeah, I was
- 16:41Speaker 1: about to say I agree with you. I don't. I'd
- 16:45Speaker 1: be very surprised if by a Syrus or Shaw or
- 16:47Speaker 1: moved yes at the deadline. I wouldn't be shocked if
- 16:52Speaker 1: if they entertain it in the offseason. Who knows what
- 16:55Speaker 1: the offseason looks like, lock out all that stuff. I'm
- 16:57Speaker 1: just saying like that that maybe more of an off
- 17:00Speaker 1: season discussion if they're going to have it. It's where
- 17:03Speaker 1: like we've talked to Jed about this. We know it's
- 17:07Speaker 1: hard to deal from your major league roster when you're contending,
- 17:11Speaker 1: like disrupting that chemistry how everything works. Like Craig Council
- 17:17Speaker 1: has mastered this bench right now, He's rarely pushing all
- 17:21Speaker 1: the right buttons. A lot of that has to do
- 17:23Speaker 1: is he has the right pieces to use. You take
- 17:26Speaker 1: that away, it disrupts things and it makes things a
- 17:29Speaker 1: little harder. It's been done before, and we know that
- 17:34Speaker 1: Jed has been a part of a front office that
- 17:36Speaker 1: made a huge deal that you know, took away from
- 17:40Speaker 1: a major league roster Nomar Garcia Para in two thousand
- 17:43Speaker 1: and four with the Red Sox. I mean that that
- 17:45Speaker 1: obviously was is probably the biggest example of this very
- 17:51Speaker 1: different situation. So you know it can be done, it
- 17:55Speaker 1: has been done. I just don't I just don't know
- 17:58Speaker 1: if this is the time and the player that it happens.
- 18:02Speaker 1: With all that said, I'm picking Moyses Biasteros as our
- 18:07Speaker 1: daily Dinger pick for I'm going to pick him for Sunday.
- 18:11Speaker 1: I mentioned the last episode. I don't know about Davis Martin.
- 18:15Speaker 1: I think he may be pretty good, but Eric Vetti's
- 18:17Speaker 1: on the mound. I expect Biastarias to be in the lineup.
- 18:21Speaker 1: Is a guy that you can make a ton of
- 18:23Speaker 1: contact with. It seems like Bias Starrus is in a
- 18:26Speaker 1: big slump, but it seems like he's about to get
- 18:29Speaker 1: out of it. Been hitting the ball really hard with
- 18:32Speaker 1: no luck, So that's a sign that he's starting to
- 18:36Speaker 1: get out of it. As long as he doesn't hang
- 18:37Speaker 1: his head and he trusts the process. I wouldn't be
- 18:39Speaker 1: surprised if he hits one out this weekend. And Northside

- 19:41Speaker 1: All right, Patrick, a lot of trade talk, but the
- 19:46Speaker 1: reality is, is this going to happen anytime soon. Our
- 19:51Speaker 1: team's gonna suddenly start selling. We know Patrick Bailey was
- 19:54Speaker 1: moved by the San Francisco Giants, but I think that's
- 19:59Speaker 1: the outlier. I don't expect a ton of moves to
- 20:02Speaker 1: be coming over the next even month. I'd say month
- 20:08Speaker 1: and a half, you know, late June I think is early.
- 20:12Speaker 1: That's I know fans want that. We get a lot
- 20:16Speaker 1: of messages saying like Jet has to be aggressive, Jed
- 20:19Speaker 1: has to make the move. It's just not like a
- 20:23Speaker 1: costs can be prohibitive and be The other teams don't
- 20:28Speaker 1: really want to sell just yet. They want to play
- 20:31Speaker 1: it out. They want to see if they can get
- 20:32Speaker 1: back in it. And some of them that we thought
- 20:34Speaker 1: were sellers a week or two ago are getting back
- 20:38Speaker 1: in it because that's how baseball works. It's a long season.
- 20:42Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 20:43Speaker 2: I mean, the Cubs did not make a competitive offer
- 20:45Speaker 2: for Lucas Giolito, like they were in a seemingly desperate situation.
- 20:51Speaker 2: A guy was available, a guy who went to the
- 20:58Speaker 2: same high school as Pete crow Armstrong, represented by the
- 21:00Speaker 2: same agency. They've been in talks, and they did not
- 21:04Speaker 2: over extend themselves by any means for Gildo. They did
- 21:10Speaker 2: a lot of this work in the off season and
- 21:14Speaker 2: winters prior. They stockpiled a lot of pitchers. It's gone
- 21:22Speaker 2: very well so far, just in terms of results. I mean,
- 21:27Speaker 2: obviously these injuries take a toll. There is a cumulative effect.
- 21:33Speaker 2: There's no way around that. The ceiling of this Cubs team,
- 21:39Speaker 2: I think is at least lowered without Kate Horton and
- 21:42Speaker 2: with Justin Steele as a question mark at this point.
- 21:45Speaker 2: But that doesn't mean that it determines their entire season.
- 21:51Speaker 2: You see the Phillies kind of responding to the managerial change,
- 21:55Speaker 2: and like that's a place that I have a hard
- 21:58Speaker 2: time seeing them waving the white flag at all. David
- 22:02Speaker 2: Stearns told reporters in New York he hasn't even entertained
- 22:07Speaker 2: the idea of a selloff. We even thought about it.
- 22:09Speaker 2: Even as the Mets are kind of in free fall.
- 22:12Speaker 2: I have a hard time seeing them pulling out of it.
- 22:15Speaker 2: But that's something you know, at a place like that,
- 22:19Speaker 2: you know you don't make that decision until you absolutely
- 22:23Speaker 2: have to. But part of why we talk about it
- 22:27Speaker 2: is because the Cubs are talking about it like this
- 22:29Speaker 2: is like that is their job they're thinking about this
- 22:30Speaker 2: stuff all the time, and there there are occasionally deals
- 22:36Speaker 2: that pop up out of nowhere, like things we didn't
- 22:39Speaker 2: see coming sometimes happen, and there are that's there is
- 22:45Speaker 2: a small handful of front offices that operate differently. Buster
- 22:50Speaker 2: Posey is kind of a one of one executive maybe
- 22:53Speaker 2: in baseball history as a part owner and Hall of
- 22:58Speaker 2: Fame caliber player. Like, so things a little differently. Team
- 23:02Speaker 2: now that the Cubs are going to trade with the Brewers,
- 23:05Speaker 2: and not that the Rays are looking to break up
- 23:08Speaker 2: what's a really good team right now, But there are
- 23:10Speaker 2: those handful of teams out there. And what we know
- 23:13Speaker 2: about Jed is that he's always in that deal flow.
- 23:16Speaker 2: He's a super chatty, kind of outgoing individual who has
- 23:21Speaker 2: a ton of experience and a lot of relationships throughout
- 23:24Speaker 2: the game. So like, the Cubs are are going to
- 23:27Speaker 2: be involved, and that.
- 23:30Speaker 1: That's that. I'm with you.
- 23:31Speaker 2: I don't think anything will happen before like the fourth
- 23:34Speaker 2: of July, but you know, as long as they're talking
- 23:37Speaker 2: about it, we're going to talk about it.
- 23:39Speaker 1: Yeah, There's there's a couple of things that when people
- 23:43Speaker 1: point to these deals I think are important. One the
- 23:47Speaker 1: the Quinn Priester deal, which happened I believe in May
- 23:51Speaker 1: or maybe even April of last year. Uh, the Brewers
- 23:57Speaker 1: like this, this wasn't a situation that like that. The
- 24:00Speaker 1: a in the Brewers were out like they had no
- 24:02Speaker 1: more pictures there. They were injured to the point where
- 24:06Speaker 1: it was like six seven guys that they had no
- 24:08Speaker 1: one that could make starts, that they were running out
- 24:11Speaker 1: of starting pitchers. The Cubs are banged up, I'm not
- 24:15Speaker 1: denying that, but they are nowhere close to the situation
- 24:18Speaker 1: that the Brewers in Brewers were in. They were desperate.
- 24:20Speaker 1: The other thing is like this Patrick Bailey deal, this
- 24:23Speaker 1: that that Quinn Priestier deal. Both in both moves, competitive
- 24:27Speaker 1: balance picks were traded the Cubs get. The Cubs don't
- 24:30Speaker 1: get those picks that not only are do they like
- 24:33Speaker 1: they don't get them, so they like those are the
- 24:36Speaker 1: only picks that can be traded. So the Cubs have
- 24:38Speaker 1: no picks that ever, they never have and never will
- 24:42Speaker 1: get those types of picks. They're not going to get
- 24:44Speaker 1: competitive balance picks, so those that's that hurts their ability
- 24:49Speaker 1: to make moves. I think those are really valuable to
- 24:51Speaker 1: teams because it's basically money that a lot of teams
- 24:55Speaker 1: look at it as money. And I know there's some
- 24:57Speaker 1: weird things going on with this draft and what the
- 24:59Speaker 1: Giants are trying to do. The rumor, the rumor mill
- 25:02Speaker 1: is is swirling on that one. Who knows. I don't
- 25:06Speaker 1: know how rail that stuff is and how we haven't
- 25:09Speaker 1: really seen something like that pulled off in a long time,
- 25:13Speaker 1: So I don't know with specific growth to that. But
- 25:18Speaker 1: just like money is matters, like those slot the slot
- 25:20Speaker 1: value matters, and the Cubs just can't they can't leverage that.
- 25:23Speaker 1: They don't have that lever to pull. So those are
- 25:27Speaker 1: two things that I need to remind people, like that's
- 25:29Speaker 1: why it doesn't happen. And it's just like this is
- 25:31Speaker 1: a front office that isn't going to overpay they. I
- 25:36Speaker 1: think the argument would be, well, if you do it now,
- 25:39Speaker 1: you get like two more months of the picture than
- 25:43Speaker 1: you would if you do it later, and that's huge.
- 25:46Speaker 1: That's where the value is. But is it cost prohibitive?
- 25:50Speaker 1: Like what is the cost of that? And that's the
- 25:54Speaker 1: internal debate And guess what the Cubs are going to
- 25:58Speaker 1: like by like of our of that front office and
- 26:01Speaker 1: the way they work. I just don't see them doing
- 26:03Speaker 1: something like that. So even if something it would, it
- 26:07Speaker 1: would just have to be a very rare situation. And
- 26:12Speaker 1: you know, we'll see if something pops up. But other
- 26:15Speaker 1: than that, I would say keep your ears open by
- 26:17Speaker 1: the by the beginning of July. But you're right, we
- 26:21Speaker 1: have to talk about this because it is something that's
- 26:23Speaker 1: being discussed and it maybe smaller deals will happen. We
- 26:27Speaker 1: already talked to last episode about Liam Hendricks. Things like
- 26:30Speaker 1: that are going to continue to happen. They're going to
- 26:32Speaker 1: pick guys up off the waiver wire. They will search
- 26:35Speaker 1: for whatever they can. There are enough injuries that it
- 26:38Speaker 1: just makes sense build up the depth, try and figure
- 26:40Speaker 1: things out and go from there. But trade deadline talk
- 26:43Speaker 1: is just going to be the talk because this team
- 26:46Speaker 1: has holes. This team is good, and they have pieces
- 26:50Speaker 1: to move. So we'll continue to touch on these things
- 26:52Speaker 1: over the coming weeks and months, but this is right
- 26:55Speaker 1: now a good team in the middle of a fun
- 26:57Speaker 1: series with the White Sox. So we'll see how this
- 27:00Speaker 1: weekend goes and then how the rest of the couple
- 27:04Speaker 1: months before the trade leadline go and what sort of
- 27:07Speaker 1: excitement we have to cover. Thanks, so much for listening
